Lorsch Abbey

Monastery
Sights & Landmarks
Carolingian religious complex with striking 1,200 year-old gatehouse, plus sculpture & paintings.
This is a great spot to unwind and soak in stunning landscapes, featuring rich, fertile loam in an area once bustling with early medieval civilization. Take the time to enjoy the place, but don't expect grand monuments, extraordinary architecture, or a deep historical narrative. Instead, immerse yourself in a location founded by a Franks early then most of the cities within 100km

Located in a sleepy same-named town Lorch, the Abbey itself is not a must see, it is not amazing, it is not impressive, one might wonder why is it listed as a world heritage site? But this place has a certain ambience, an aura if you will, that is hard to describe - it’s peaceful, calm and unbelievably picturesque! Also it is surprisingly a great place for relaxation! The entry is free to the premises of the Abbey, however if visitors want to visit the chambers of the Kings Hall, a guided tour ticket must be purchased. Unfortunately the tours are available only in German (if you want English, you need to contract the place in advance). Luckily the staff here was very friendly and welcoming, therefore they let me join the German tour to visit the chambers only, free of charge! Very much appreciated! The whole area of the Abbey is very well preserved and maintained, it is neat and clean, especially the pitch-perfect grass is very inviting. In the nearby museum, where guided tour tickets can be purchased (payments possible with card), some English brochures with explanations about this place are available. Many restaurants and cafes are lined up on the road leading to the main square, therefore plenty of choice of food. Train station is approximately 10 minutes away by foot. Recommended If you pass by, however I would not plan this as a main destination. Visited in August 2022.

The "Königshalle" belongs to UNESCO world heritage now. Researchers are still not sure what its exact purpose was back in the times. But one thing is sure it was built 764 & still stands. The top level, only to be seen with a guide, has still wall paintings from different centuries.
Mary L — Google review
We had a great guide how gave us all the information he could, based on the facts already discovered by the archeologists. The place is beautiful and perfect for family, and the history is very interesting
Isis O — Google review
This UNESCO site was once as important as Rome. The unique striped gatehouse was a medieval billboard showing the abbey's power. In the herb garden, they still grow all 72 plants mentioned in a 9th-century monk's medical manual - including some now-rare varieties.
Arman K — Google review
Great little Abbey with a large history that one should visit. The grounds are well kept and staff is knowledgeable. They have tours that operate in various languages. There is a museum nearby that sells various items of historical context, however, a bit warm inside the museum during the summer months; recommend going on a nice cool day.
Chris F — Google review
There's a nice walk around the garden near the abbey where you can learn about local plants and enjoy the beautifully maintained architecture.
Hyper L — Google review
Walked around the place a bit. Didn't end up doing a tour. Beautiful little town and the abbey is nice too.

Goldener Engel | Hotel - Restaurant

Hotel
Restaurant
Cozy hotel offering classic rooms, free Wi-Fi & a restaurant serving regional cuisine.
Killer location right at historic Heppenheim market place, looking right at the old Starkenburg. Very attentive service (“Angels in action”) and delicious breakfast buffet. Rooms are renovated and well functional. We’ll be back!
Jurgen S — Google review
I was a guest in the hotel but can not recommend staying here, while the location is excellent, there is little sense of hospitality. When we arrived we asked if we could get a table for dinner. We were told they were all booked out. We did not find anything else we liked in the area, and we had our eyes on the pepper steak on the menu here so we tried our luck again at the restaurant. There was a table free outside, which said it had been reserved for 19h but at this point it was well past 20h and the table was still empty. We said we were guests at the hotel and we were promptly told we can not be seated at the table. We ended up ordering food elsewhere and sitting on the bench in the square, to eat on our lap. The entire time, the table at the Goldener Engel stayed EMPTY. Very inhospitable!!! The rooms are clean and spacious, few extras not even water. Breakfast was sparse if you could even get to it - unfortunately it's tucked into a tiny corner and there's room for one person at a time. Not an ideal stay. I expect more welcoming service from a hotel really! very unfortunate.
Lab R — Google review
Traditional German Gasthof. Comfortable rooms, though the bathrooms are on the tiny side. Good food in the restaurant. The tables outside, on the central marketplace, are the BEST you can choose for a drink.
Barbro F — Google review
Excellent suite (aqua) and super lush breakfast. Friendly relaxed staff. Lovely location in middle of old town. Highly recommend.
S S — Google review
We called in our desperate need Hotel Goldener Engel, explained our situation (no Tesla Destination charger in the nearby booked Michel Hotel, while google said it was), if we please could charge a few % (we said we wanted to pay ofcourse) but the Goldener Engel Hotel said no: it was only allowed if we booked a room. While we walked around, with our two tired little children, to look for help from anybody, we saw outside that the Tesla charger at the Goldener Engel Hotel wasn't used at this moment.
Laura M — Google review
Absolutely adored this hotel. Romantic and quiet location, clean rooms, loved the vegan breakfast options. 10/10

Wonderful dinner and wine with my corporate team here. Never eaten in a building from the 1700s. Surreal experience. Made the food and drink that much more enjoyable.

Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt

Museum
Local history museum
Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, also known as the Hessian State Museum, is a renowned institution showcasing a diverse range of European art and natural history exhibits. The museum's collections, which originated from the counts and grand dukes, form the basis of its extensive displays. Visitors can explore exhibitions spanning from prehistoric times to modern-day art, culture, and history. Additionally, the museum features a restaurant on-site for visitors to enjoy.
We visited this museum just because it was at midway on our long distance drive that day and was perfect spot to rest. It turned out to be one of the best museums we ever visited. It is not a big museum as the popular ones in the country. However it has a nice collection of things, the variety of which was quite a lot to facinate, but not too much as in the big museums to overwhelm. The natural history collection had many bird, mammal and skeleton samples. There is also a collection of skulls of other human species like neanderthals, etc. In addition, there is a nice minerals collection. The second floor was reserved for modern art exhibitions, but I cannot comment as we are not fond of modern art. Parking: there are two big underground parking just under the museum and under the square across the museum. Therefore, access by car is very easy. The price of parking was okay or as one would expect considering it was the most central location in the city. We bought the ticket when we arrive. There was not a queue, however it was a low season. Ticket can also be bought online. The price of the museum is 6 euro per person. Overall, it was a quite nice experience for 3 hours that we spent.
Umut K — Google review
That was the best museum that I've ever seen. Fossils, ancient Egypt, Knight armours, various minerals and stones, amazing tiffany glass examples, stunning old jewelleries, ancient Rome miniatures and more... It was absolutely amazing. 3 floors took my 3 hours and I could've stay even more.
Keatline S — Google review
It is a huge museum having 7-8 sections ranging from science, arts to history. The hardwork of workers in preserving the biological samples is admirable. You can come with kids to give them a good insights into different subjects. It is fantastic museum.
Shefali — Google review
Absolutely wonderful place. Everyone should be visit this museum when gone to Darmstadt.
Özkan H — Google review
Excellent natural history museum with interesting mineralogical and zoological collections in addition to a range of works of art from both the ancient and modern world. In my opinion the heart of the museum is in the collection of fossils from the nearby Messel site, as they are incredibly well prepared and presented.
Raptorstorm1 — Google review
A surprisingly fulfilling museum with interesting exhibits in all areas ranging from art and history to the natural world. Be sure to reserve a good three or more hours for this place if you want to get round everything, as it has a vast collection - especially of art. The Max Liebermann exhibition was on when I visited. This was one of the best parts and was a well put together exhibition with interesting pieces. Most of the descriptions of the pieces are in German but this didn't reduce any of the entertainment for me. One kind employee even had a nice chat with me about the permanent collection. Entry is cheap and discounted for students so I undoubtedly recommend a visit as I believe it's one of the most interesting places to visit in Darmstadt!
George — Google review
We came for the art deco section and especially the jewelry part. This is the best display of jewelry I have ever seen. And the rest of the museum is also excellent. Beautiful pieces and excellently displayed. A must see for everyone. Very helpful security, especially in the art deco section where we were pointed towards the available drawers with even more jewelry.
William W — Google review
Very interesting exhibits in an amazing beautiful Museum Hause in the heart of Darmstadt town... Enough time is required for visiting every exhibit with no rush, at least 2 to 3 hours. A café is also here to sit and enjoy a pause in between or after the visiting... A good museum for adults with children ....

The compact five-hectare space houses around 2,000 creatures, including native and exotic animals such as snakes, lizards, giant tortoises, rheas, crocodiles, tropical fish, and monkeys. It's a popular destination for families and animal lovers alike. Despite its size, the zoo provides ample space and care for its inhabitants.
The Vivarium Zoo in Darmstadt is a nice place to spend a lovely day or even a cloudy day, esp with kids. They have quite a collection of different animals, including colourful birds all over the world, including flamingo birds. They also have many butterflies and all sorts of fishes.

This is a small zoo in Darmstadt, where suitable for a short visit of 2-3 hours. this zoo provide friendly space for children and family activities.
Phong T — Google review
Went for couple hours and I was actually pleasantly with the diversity. Very good park and nice place to spend a day with kids. The internal restaurant is too expensive. Pretty cool activity to do in otherways mostly boring city.
Бахар М — Google review
It was very nice experience, not too many animals but at least the prices were reasonable and conveniently little people and walking.
Tobiasz M — Google review
This is a small Zoo but with heart and soul. The animals are treated good, there was enough food and space for each inhabitant. Some animals were lend out to other zoos so not all areas were filled. Entrance fee is really good compared to other zoos I have been to. The prices of the small cafe were too high (~4€ for fries) and it took way to long (~20 mins waiting time for fries...?), queueing excluded. The area is accessible with a wheelchair and the parking lots are close. Will be back for sure.
AndyundSarah — Google review
Not much to see cause not such a big zoo, but very nice and appealing for kids. Benches. Playgrounds. Clean. The crocodile hides and sleeps and not green.... Some listed animals missing. This was very nice for me and the kids.
Daniel ( — Google review
The small animal park is a great day out with small children. We love the otters and the monkey house! Presently (October 2025) they are doing quite a bit of maintenance which means some of the enclosures are not available. Our family has had a membership since 2010 and highly recommend it.

Historic City Hall Michelstadt

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Government Buildings
Michelstadt is an absolutely charming city, and its Altstadt (old town) is truly a gem! Walking through the narrow streets of the old city is an amazing and fascinating experience. The historic architecture, the cozy atmosphere, and the overall vibe of the place left me with such a positive feeling. I also had the chance to visit the Christmas market, which was one of the most beautiful and charming markets I’ve ever been to. The variety of food and cuisine on offer was incredible, much broader than what I’ve seen at other Christmas markets in different cities. Every corner of the market felt magical, with its unique character and festive spirit. I absolutely love Michelstadt and its Altstadt, and I can’t wait to come back every year, especially for the Christmas market. This place has captured my heart! Highly recommended for anyone looking for a delightful and heartwarming experience. #Weihnachtsmarkt

Michelstadt is indeed an old town and well worth a visit it goes back to the medieval days, it has a synagogue that you can visit, the once a thriving Jewish community but not since the 1930s , the town pavements are covered in Stolperstein which little cobblestone with the name of the people arrested, deported, and murdered by the Nazis I would recommend a visit to the town

This lovely 15th century building is the main landmark of Michelstadt. Located in the old town area, this building housed the town administration until 1920.

This was during the Eastern market that they have on the weekends around Easter. It's fun they sell some food it isn't big like a Christmas market. But it is a fun place to go and has a festive atmosphere and all the shops are open even on Sunday. They sell some brats and some snitchel some ice cream and things like that

Spessart Therme

Thermal baths
Spas & Wellness
Health spa with pools, baths, saunas & a Dead Sea salt grotto offering treatments & fitness classes.
We love it! Very salty water, but your skin will thank you after your visit! Our favourite is, of course, the small pool with hot thermal water!
Familie G — Google review
On a short quick pre Christmas visit to Germany from the U.S., the first for my 16 year old during winter, I decided to introduce her to German spa culture. Rhein Main or Taunus Therme would have been a lot closer to us, the Toskana Therme in Bad Orb popped up and came recommended by acquaintances, but all three had quite a few negative reviews. I discovered Spessart Therme when one of the reviewers mentioned it as the better alternative that is only 6 km further than Bad Orb. I was sold when I read that they have a 10% salt pool, you can float in and that Wednesday is ladies day at the sauna (no clothing allowed). I was pleasantly surprised that we could still get a child ticket for my 16 year old or a 1/2 family ticket for the two of us (17 EUR plus 14 EUR for sauna for all day). That's a better price than any of the other spas. Nice touch: The parking lot on the left is free (5 hour time limit with “Parkscheibe”). Upon arrival we found that the next salt cave session would start soon and still had availability so we decided to check it out. The reception lady was friendly & patiently explained how everything worked but charged us (wrongly) for two adults (2x 11,50 EUR). I saw later in the brochure that youth (11-16 years) is 9,50 EUR, oh well … The 45 minute salt cave session was pleasant, blankets are provided but it felt warm (20-22C) enough. It's a good time to recharge (and nap) with relaxing music. They say 45 minutes in there is equally beneficial as one day at the ocean front. We went on into the pool area next and floated around one of the main pools that is 31C. It's pleasant and has plenty of bubblers and little water jet massagers. It feels warm going in but we needed to move around a little after a while to stay comfortable. We only tested the water of the other pool with the Poseidon temple by hand - it felt noticeably cooler (my guess was about 28C, like regular swimming pool temperature) so we didn't even bother going in there. The website says that it's 33C (?!). Then we found the smaller 10% salt pool. It's very warm (36C) The water is of brownish color and there should be a warning that it might stain white bathing suits. It made the white in my black & white top look rather cream colored. Avoid wearing white! There is a sign asking for silence and not to remain in it for more than 15 minutes. When we first discovered it, people who had just completed a water aerobics session in the therapeutic pool had gone in as a group and they were chatting away. We went back again later and were all by ourselves then - a little piece of heaven to be able to float on our backs watching the changing light colors. Only music could have further enhanced this experience. This pool alone made the 1 hour trip totally worth it. Next we checked out the saunas. There is a steam bath and a 50C & 55C sauna inside and three wooden huts with 85, 90 & 100C saunas outside. We happened to arrive just in time for the infusion in the 90C sauna. We are sauna novices but wanted to give this a try. It was popular and the sauna filled up fast. The sauna master passed out menthol drops before adding ginger lemongrass fragrance & then pouring on water. It got very hot but was still bearable and we made it to the end. There are cold showers and a small dipping tub to cool off. We also tried the 85C sauna but skipped the others. They were passing out salt to use for a full body scrub & peeling in front of the steam bath which was a nice touch. The restroom & shower areas were clean, and had good water pressure. Maybe a few more hooks would be useful. There are chairs and free hair dryers in front of a long wall of mirrors just outside of the changing rooms and lockers. Overall a very pleasant visit, we will be back in the summer!

We took our management team to visit this place to try for stress free idea. The Cyrotherapy and their little Salt Cave were our good choices. This place is clean with friendly staff. However, it'd be great if cyrotherapy and salt cave can be managed to use in a row. We had to wait for almost 2 hours to use the cave although we called to arrange time with the staff before travelling. It already took 6 hours for us to visit and return to our city. Hopefully, someone can really arrange our appointment when we call next time.

Not to big but for a few hours it was great. I loved the salt bad and sauna. Unfortunality the 25 mtr Pool was closed, after a long holliday drive i would have love to swim there. But we could relax and swim a little bit in the smaller therme pool. We came by camper and a street away we could find the camper parking place for the night.

Great system for lockers / entry / changing area fair price kids price until 16 yrs (incl). Typical spa pools, wave pool outside and a sports pool plus a salt grotto which I sadly missed. Friendly lifeguard. Only con was one of the ladies at the cantine who was impatient, rude and wrong about our order, possibly racist or xenophobic as we were obviously foreign or maybe just stressed. Her colleague was friendly though.

Had the luck to try the ice lab here the experience was fantastic.

Fish in cafe was shockingly small and low quality. Never order this item. Staff was incredibly rude when I asked for mustard and demanded I pay extra. Food took long and was below average for the price.

I came today as a tourist and the customer service was awful, I have tried to speak the little German I know hence I am the first time in Germany ever and they didn’t even respond to “Sprechen english” the woman rolled her eyes in disrespect and mocked me for not knowing German, VERY BAD OVERALL EXPERIENCE.

GRIMMWELT Kassel

Museum
Specialty Museums
The GRIMMWELT Kassel is a spacious museum housed in a stone building that features exhibits highlighting the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. It provides an abundance of information about their life and works, making it an ideal destination for those seeking knowledge on this subject. The presentations are uniquely designed with creativity and cater to children's needs, ensuring family-friendly fun. Outside the museum offers captivating views adding to its charm.
A great place to spend the afternoon with the family. The museum is divided into two main sections: 'Imaginarium' and the 'GRIMMWELT'; the first is a complete interactive tour of wooden games and interesting classical figures. It is highly recommended for a family visit, children will surely love it! On the other hand, the 'GRIMMWELT' amazes with the extensive collection of pieces they have on the life and work of the Grimm brothers. Curious facts, signed letters and photographs take up the first part of the tour, then it ends with an interactive section where it is even possible to ask the classic question: "Mirror, mirror, who is the fairest?". At the end, do not forget to visit the terrace and walk around the museum, because from there it is possible to see the famous Hercules of Kassel, and enjoy a beautiful view or sunset.

Pure magic! This museum is fun! I’m a sucker for a creepy fairytale but that’s not all you get . This is an interactive experience- all of your senses will light up. Thank you!

Interactive and fun if you like fairy tales. Quite informational about the two brothers and their life and work. Info plaques also in English

Great museum about Grimm brothers. If you’re a fan of fairy tales this is the place to be visited.
Alexandre S — Google review
An enjoyable experience. For the few negative reviews I’ve seen, I would recommend that you do some browsing about the brothers Grimm so you have some idea of what they did besides collect fairy tales before arriving. We enjoyed working our way through the exhibits. I saw a review noting that conversations with a security guard was a highlight. I think we meet him, and that was fun talking to him.
Arthur ( — Google review
We took a train from Frankfurt to see the museum. Grimmwelt does an excellent job of highlighting the scholarly aspects of the Grimm brothers work. My spouse mentioned she had no idea about the amount of work the Grimm brothers were engaged in. Grimmwelt goes far beyond retelling fairy tales.
Matthew J — Google review
Very interesting and knowledgeable exhibitions ( including the special exhibition event). I thought it was going to be about the fairytales of the Brother Grimm. But it was a lot more than that! It was about the development of the German dictionary and much more!
J. — Google review
The permanent displays focused a LOT on the German language and the Grimm Brothers contribution to it. Despite a rather bland topic, the displays were neat, and I appreciate the German language a little more from it! There was also an area for the fairy tales, and a "forest," more geared towards kids. There was a special exhibition when I was there called "Imaginarium" - the extraordinary world of Czech traveling and puppet theatre. This was actually pretty AMAZING! I've never seen things like this in a museum, they were interactive, and it really made me feel like a big, happy kid, turning all the wheels, handles, and levers and seeing what each display did! This could be a very popular museum by itself and I hope it finds a permanent home! In any case, visit Grimmwelt while Imaginarium is there, if you can! Finally, the cafe was EXCELLENT! Lots of kuchen (cakes) to choose from and, quite possibly, the best cappuccino I've ever had! I tried to tell the barista, but I don't think she understood my English. Hopefully, she'll read this!

Schloss Orangerie Der Grischäfer is a charming restaurant with outdoor terrace service. The sunny location offers a beautiful view of the garden and greenery. The friendly staff provides attentive service, and the wine selection is delightful. The restaurant offers a spacious seating area, although it may not be easily accessible for all due to stairs leading to the entrance and restrooms located in the basement.
I loved this place The food is very delicious and the portion is good You should definitely try the avocado bruschetta, the Caesar salad and the waffle The beer is very good as well and they have multiple coffee options It is affordable with a very nice view

It is a standout exhibition in an unexpected rural area. I am a passionate saltwater hobbyist, and the effort folks put into these display tanks is fantastic.

This captivating natural wonder has been enchanting visitors for generations with its stunning geological formations, rich history, and an otherworldly atmosphere that transports you to a different realm. In this comprehensive review, I'll delve into the various facets that make Marienglashöhle a must-visit destination for anyone seeking adventure, history, and the sheer beauty of nature. **Geological Marvels:** The Marienglas Cave is a testament to the intricate work of Mother Nature. It boasts an astonishing array of stalactites and stalagmites, which have been meticulously shaped over millions of years by the slow drip of mineral-rich water. The play of light on the crystalline structures is a photographer's dream, creating a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of colors and textures. **The Mystery of Marienglas:** One of the most intriguing aspects of Marienglashöhle is its historical significance. The cave's name, which translates to "Mary's Glass Cave," alludes to the legend surrounding the discovery of beautiful, glass-like crystals within its depths. These crystals, now known as gypsum, were once believed to be the tears of the Virgin Mary herself, and they hold a significant place in local folklore and history. The story adds an enchanting layer to the cave's allure. **Guided Tours:** To fully appreciate the wonders of Marienglas Cave, guided tours are a must. Knowledgeable guides lead you through a labyrinth of chambers, each with its unique geological wonders. The tours are both educational and entertaining, making them suitable for visitors of all ages. **Accessibility and Safety:** Marienglashöhle offers tours that cater to various levels of physical fitness, so it's accessible to a wide range of visitors. However, it's important to note that the cave's temperature remains constant year-round, so wearing appropriate clothing is advisable. The pathways are well-maintained, and safety measures are in place, ensuring a comfortable and secure visit for everyone. **Surrounding Nature:** The beauty of Marienglas Cave extends beyond its entrance. The Thuringian Forest, with its lush greenery and picturesque landscapes, is a perfect backdrop for a day trip. Hiking trails in the vicinity provide the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the region and enjoy outdoor activities. **Visitor Experience:** Marienglas Cave offers a unique blend of natural wonder and historical intrigue that captivates visitors. It's an ideal destination for families, couples, nature enthusiasts, and history buffs alike. The combination of breathtaking geological formations, captivating legends, and expertly guided tours ensures a memorable and educational experience. In conclusion, Marienglas Cave is a true hidden gem in Germany, offering an enchanting journey through time and nature. Its geological marvels, rich history, and captivating legends make it a destination worth exploring. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or a curious explorer, this cave will leave you awestruck by the wonders of our planet and the mysteries of the past. Don't miss the chance to immerse yourself in the magic of Marienglas Cave – it's an experience that will stay with you long after you've left its mystical chambers.

Set high above the treetops, this scenic pathway offers a lookout platform with forest information.
The place was a surprise for us! Interesting museum, routes in the forest, hanging galleries! In general emotions and need to come again! School age children will be more interested in the museum itself and reading the information on the stands! Thank you for the place! Let's come back
Ivan G — Google review
Loved this place. It's very magical in fall when the leaves change color but don't let that deter you from going in the summer. Been there three times already and I'm so going again. also don't forget to check out the museum where you buy the tickets. P.S. the restaurant outside, near the entrance has a cool robot server.
Ummara A — Google review
It's a nice location for coming down a bit in busy times....even if it's not to full there. If it is full, than it's a bit crowded because of the limited space at the canopy walkway. But from there you have a great view into the bright green of the treetops or - depending of the level, where you're walking - across the nice surrounding. Even for children it's very interesting there, especially because of the exhibitions at the entrance where everybody will find something new to learn. But keep care to reach there near to the last time for entrance! They are very strict and even cheat a bit. So at the entrance pay desk they send you just before closing time through the forest to the entrance gate for the canopy walkway and if you reach there, they tell you it's to late....and no discussion helps, even if you came from far away.
Mario B — Google review
Lovely place to go and explore nature in the Hainich. It's very well maintained, the restaurant is great and the playground awesome for kids. Also really close to the Wildkatzen Dorf.

Very cool day trip. We went on a cool spring day and took the bus from Bad Lagensalza, it was very easy and right next to the train station. The forest and walkways were unique and the view on top of the "lighthouse" was great. We appreciated the English translations. Don't let your kids get too close of a look at the very detailed diorama in the lighthouse- we took a closer look and had some fun noticing the more raunchy figures and situations.

Very nice and interesting place to visit; set in the beautiful forest Hainich. Informative and well maintained visitor center (entrance fee) and the path through the tree tops is great!

A nice experience and an interesting nature center for children, but at €11 it felt pricey compared to other tree walkways I’ve been to in Germany (Cloef and Beelitz, in particular).

Great structure, very informative. Would recommend especially for children. The ticket costs 11 euros for adults, with option for family tickets for 30 euros. There is also a Museum in the park centre. Two or three options of trails to do by walking. Some can be long, but the views are beautiful in a small part of the way.

Schloss Friedenstein Gotha

A must see if you are a history buff and want to learn more about the Saxe-Coburg Gotha family

Schloss Friedenstein is a very large castle but one only gets to see a small portion of it. The castle has seen better days and needs some serious renovation. However, what you do get to see is worth going for. Several rooms have beautiful decor and furnishing. The entrance fee is also very reasonable. There is a restaurant on the castle ground but it was unfortunately closed when we were there.

Beautifully restored castle with three different museums integrated into it. The entrance fee covers the castle, museums and visiting the theater that is also part of the castle, as well as the 'Herzogliches Museum' across the street. The staff is friendly and helpful and will cheerfully share stories and history of the castle itself and it's various inhabitants. The place is a treasure trove of exhibits and history affine kids will love it. Plan to spend at least three hours to cover all that can be seen. During our stay there was a little snack bar in the castle yard that served delicious cakes.

Erfurt Cathedral, also known as St. Mary's Cathedral, is a stunning Roman Catholic church that beautifully showcases both Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. Perched on the picturesque Domberg hill alongside the Church of St. Severus, this magnificent structure boasts intricate stained glass windows and remarkable works of art dating back to the 15th century. With its origins tracing back to 742 AD, Erfurt Cathedral stands as one of Germany's finest examples of Gothic architecture.
Erfurt Cathedral is impressive. Its architecture is very detailed which attracts a lot of attention. its interiors are very spacious and inside it is very quiet and dark. For me, the most impressive thing was the organ, it was gigantic. I highly recommend your visit, as it is fascinating to get to know this ancient cathedral.

Absolutely amazing architecture really beautiful cathedral. Only disappointing thing is wasn’t able to view the inside but that is because I arrived in the evening although the view of the cathedral at night is also spectacular and even from the outside truly worth a visit very nice.
Karissa G — Google review
This cathedral is massive and must have really intimidated people back in the day. I've never seen anything like it, though someone told me there's another large one in another German city. This cathedral dominates this small city. Pictures don't capture the humongous size; you have to see it in-person to get the full effect. It communicates power. The inside is beautiful, and in one area people pray and reflect, making it a peaceful place to visit.
Margaret L — Google review
This church has so many architectural details from the outside and from inside as well. The construction is huge and is a landmark for the city of Erfurt. It could be worth visiting once, however I noticed that they were closing the gates going to the inside yard of the church in the evening.

Erfurt Cathedral of St. Mary is an impressive Gothic church that towers above the Domplatz. Krämerbrücke, also known as the chandlers bridge, is a historic landmark in Erfurt, Germany. It is the longest inhabited bridge in Europe and features half-timbered houses that now house galleries, cafes, antique shops, and boutiques. This medieval bridge offers a glimpse into the city's rich history and provides stunning views of Erfurt from its cobblestone street.
This is probably the first thing you should visit as a tourist in Erfurt - it's beautiful, there's lots of cute little shops, you can get some ice cream and sit and enjoy the view of this beautiful bridge and all the people who are walking past. There were lots of tourist groups, but it was still relatively quiet. I'd really recommend coming here!

Really cool that one can be walking down the street without even realizing being on the Merchant's bridge. Definitely take a moment to walk outside and see the bridge then walk back through - really cool. There are a lot of little plazas around to stop and relax with a lot of little ice cream shops within a small area.

The Krämerbrücke in Erfurt is the longest bridge in Europe that is completely covered with inhabited buildings. It spans the Gera River and connects Benediktsplatz with Wenigemarkt in the heart of the old town. Small shops, galleries, and artisan workshops line the bridge, giving it a charming medieval atmosphere. It is one of Erfurt’s most famous landmarks and a popular spot for both locals and visitors.

This place is pretty amazing specially for kids, the language of the guide is german, yet its very fun to go through it, its like around one hour , the green scenes around are also beautiful, if your around you should visit this place

Great experience, but the guide tour was only in German and the recordings were much sporter than the guides speaches which made the kids a bit unrested since none of us understood anything that was being said. What was really good was the Fairy garden above the 'grotten'. Recommend big time!

A wonderful spot to visit in Thüringen. Well maintained and presented. The museum also does a great job in giving the details about the work of miners of the old times. Highly recommended!!

Worth a visit once. For those nerds, who're interested in history and mining science, please do go. Everything is very well preserved from the past and it's quite amidst the nature as well. One thing to note: For those who don't understand Deutsch/German, you might need to translate everything. The government must promote this place as it's got lots of history and every information should be made available in English too.

Saalfeld Feengrotten on Halloween was something magical. The Adams Family theme added an extra layer of charm to the already fascinating caves. From intricate decorations to well-thought-out details, the ambiance was perfect for the occasion. The staff's commitment to the theme and their enthusiastic engagement with visitors enhanced the overall experience. The pumpkin arrangements throughout the venue were not only visually appealing but also showcased a creative touch that added to the festive spirit. The guided tour was informative, providing insights into the geological wonders of the caves while maintaining a spooky and entertaining atmosphere. The attention to detail in every aspect of the Halloween setup demonstrated the dedication of the organizers. It was a memorable experience, making my visit to Saalfeld Feengrotten on Halloween truly special.

An amazing tourist spot to visit in Thuringia. The tour inside the cave was fantastic (although you'll need German to understand) but it was very amazing 😍 you can also taste the water coming from the cave.

The Feenweltchen is good made. From the entrance door (after scanned your ticket), the entrance house will give you feeling that you are entering fairy world 🙂. The first stop, you can get Face or Body painting by the Fairy. Then from there you can explore the Fairy World. Totally recommend for toddler and bigger kids.
Marina T — Google review
This was a great place for the kids to visit, but the grottos and their stalactite formations weren't as impressive as other cave systems I have seen. In all, there are 3 or 4 small caves with fairly small stalactite and stalacmite formations located in a disused slate mine. What it lacks in spelunking wonders, it makes up in entertainment for the kids. The underground tour was informative, but is only conducted in German. An audio tour headset is available for other languages. The fairy adventure park consumed another hour or so, but will likely suit kids to about 7 or so only. Not bad, but not sure the considerable drive was worth it.

I recently read Andrea Wulf’s Inventing Nature about Alexander Von Humboldt’s friendship with Goethe, and more. Fascinating! The floors of this old house were really creaky.

Interesting place from history. Very big and give many interesting information inside. In 2026 , they will close for the renovation so when you have a chance. Try it :) ticket costs 13 Euro in 2025

The Goethe museum costs pp € 13 pp. The Wohnung was to us the most interesting part. The other part of the museum contains many objects owned by Goethe among which several portraits. That part of the museum is definitely interesting but also has a somewhat hagiographic nature.

I really enjoyed this experience, especially having the app to lead you through the house was amazing. Genius to have it play when you hold your phone up to your ear! Also, the backyard was extremely beautiful and it really made you feel like you walked in the same house as Goethe, it was beautiful.

Goethe's House, or Goethes Wohnhaus, is a captivating museum that offers an in-depth look into the life of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The museum provides comprehensive insights into Goethe's personal and professional life, with well-curated exhibits that include original manuscripts, personal belongings, and detailed descriptions of his contributions to literature and science. The historical ambiance of the house, combined with the extensive information provided, makes it an enriching experience for visitors. It's a must-visit for anyone interested in German literature and the life of one of its most influential figures.

Very interesting life and he had a big house with many different rooms with specific purposes. Take the audioguide for sure, which is included in the ticket price. 1:30 to 3:00 to complete it depending how fast you go.

We hiked up from Bad Frankenhausen. Nice little Hike. This is an impressive Museum. The Painting is amazing and captures the history of this Battle really well. When we got there it was pretty empty. The Cafe closes at 4pm. Worth a visit for sure if you are in the area

Great experience with all the background information, but especially at the entrance area unprofessional staff.
Mathias G — Google review
Magnificent piece of art and a good display putting it into context. But it is difficult to understand the museum displays if you do not speak English and you don't know much about the Reformation and the German Peasants' War. The audio guide is useful for understanding the painting. To a certain extent though it felt like the town is embarrassed by this Museum and sees it as a relic of the GDR they would rather not have. ButI do encourage you to visit and celebrate the struggles of the past for freedom and a world without exploitation and oppression. La Lutte Continua, as they say.
Martin E — Google review
Super intetesting place. Even more so if you do a little research about the whole project beforehand. Entrance fee is 8€ per adulte. I took a guided tour for 1€ extra. It wasn't bad but a little boring. Definitely worth seeing for the scale of the painting alone
Karen M — Google review
A unique experience that's definitely unlike the multitude of cathedrals and old towns in the region. The long-version audioguide is 1h 15min is outstanding and is a must to receive the full experience. While created mostly in the 1980s, it has nothing to do with the DDR philosophy, though the painting is full of symbolism and meaning. A pair of binoculars would be helpful if you happen to have it with you. Allow enough time for the visit - at least 1.5 hours.
Oleg K — Google review
If you’re an art purist then this is possibly not the place for you ... but for anyone else it’s worth making a significant detour to visit this stunning panorama. The “purist” question is why a mid 20th century painter should produce a work rather reminiscent of, say, Bruegel. Yet the work is extremely well executed, with a mass of detail in each of the several scenes that make up its enormous 14m high circle, with a circumference of 123 metres. The English language audio guide is excellent and adds greatly to enjoying the work - we opted for the shorter version, which we felt gave a good level of detail. The painting is also a fascinating piece of social history, having been commissioned by the East German Government, to present the Peasants’ War as part of the glorious legacy of their people ... yet the painting does nothing to glorify the struggle of the “Peasants”, and is full of religious imagery that would normally have been an anathema to the Government ... you have to wonder just how happy the sponsors were with the results of their commission. The museum restaurant is good (of its type!). Interestingly, its menu features some typical DDR dishes, although these are not highlighted as such. When visiting the museum, make sure you also go into Bad Frankenhausen to see the church with the (steeply!) leaning steeple. If visiting by public transport, especially in the winter season, there are several more buses on weekdays than at the weekend. Also, note that some of the advertised buses run only if requested by phone two hours in advance! However, “normal” services run to and from Artern station. If arriving by bus walk up to the “crooked church” and then either follow the road to the museum car park, or the footpath that goes more directly up the hill. In places the footpath is quite steep and not made up, but it is an attractive walk.
George H — Google review
Very interesting museum, worlds largest panorama painting. The location may be somewhat weird and far away from other sites. Nevertheless it's worth the journey if you like art. It's really impressive. Although it's created during DDR adminidtrstion the artist himself calls it a "Christian painting". Take the audiotour, it's worth every penny (EUR 1,-).

Duchess Anna Amalia Library

Library
Museums
The Duchess Anna Amalia Library, also known as the Historical Library, is located in Weimar's Green Palace, a grand Renaissance building dating back to 1563. As part of the Weimar Classical UNESCO World Heritage Site, this ornate and restored library boasts a significant collection of historic manuscripts, books, and music. It houses over a million books including medieval signatures and some of Europe's earliest printed books.
This was an extremely beautiful part of Weimar that I'd recommend to anyone. You have to reserve a spot beforehand! And make sure you have the Weimar+ app downloaded so you can listen to all the explanations. Also, you'll have to wear slippers over your shoes to protect the floor inside the library, which makes total sense.
Ripple E — Google review
A beautifully restored and maintained library representing the decadence and thirst for knowledge of years past. It’s a great location and not too far away from the main shopping district in the old city. Entry is for a fee of roughly €10 per person and kids are free. You will be required to wear clumsy feeling slippers over your shoes to protect the old floorboards. There are set times when tours take place so maybe check the website before going. The library itself is a wonderful display of craftsmanship and eloquence. There are also many side attractions apart from the main room. The building also plays host to some travelling exhibitions and is also located above the more modern city library. There are small gifts available and plenty informative displays. I wouldn’t recommend small kids as they may get bored and make a lot of noise.
Andrew H — Google review
You have to buy tickets weeks in advance online if you plan to visit. We bought ours about a month in advance since the number of visitors per day is very limited. The visit itself was very disappointing. For the price of 8 euro per person you can only enter the Rococo library which turned out to be very very small. Everything is fenced and you can not go anywhere except walk a few steps further on the main aisle. Upper floor and all other side aisles are not accessible! There is no information regarding the library to read on spot! If you want to learn something, you have to have the Weimar tourist app pre installed on your phone and have headphones. The most ridiculous thing of all was the huge slippers we were given prior to entering. They are all one size (probably size 47-48) and women and kids with smaller feet have a big chance of tripping and falling down. This is absolutely ridiculous for the price of 8 euro! I do not recommend a visit! If you have 8 euro to spare, I recommend a visit to the Neues Weimar Museum instead which is much more interesting.
Maya N — Google review
High entry price for such a small amount of time to be spent there. Also everything is only in German. You don’t see anything more than the main pictures. You can’t go upstairs either. I wouldn’t recommend unless you are a big bibliophile Tickets are timed. I got lucky and got in on the next round since I was solo
Ninette — Google review
The library is worth visiting due to its historical significance and excellent maintenance. However, the front desk receptionist was quite cold and somewhat rude, which was disappointing. It would be great if they could be friendlier, considering it's a public place with many international visitors. While I understand language limitations, it's challenging when the staff doesn't speak English and is reluctant to communicate. In a tourist spot, especially a UNESCO heritage site, having bilingual staff would be beneficial. A warm and welcoming demeanor would also make a big difference.
Kohulan R — Google review
If you like books, art, history and knowledge this place will enchant you. Yes it is small, yes you can’t visit many rooms, yes the libraries in Dublin and Coimbra are more beautiful, yes €8 can seem a lot, still, it is a place of historical importance and if you allow that fact to sink in (Goethe and Schiller both stood there, where you will stand) you’ll be as touched as I was.
Patrice K — Google review
If you are a student in Jena or Weimar don’t miss out on this gem. Use your Thoska card to register and take out books. Not only is it a gorgeous study space, but they have a huge selection of English books too. I do a lot of research on line, however this library has books available that were not available the Thulb in Jena.
Cayly “ — Google review
The room is really beautiful, it's worth seing once in my opinion. Because of the system to buy a ticket for a 30 minutes slot, I thought the amount of people visiting at once would be limited. It was actually very packed so couldn't move around as freely as I would have wished (on a sunday around 11-12h) The employees were all friendly. Maybe a visit is more pleasant during the week days.

Historical landmark
Park an der Ilm, a UNESCO-listed green space in Weimar, was established in 1778 and covers 48 hectares along the river Ilm. It is historically significant and showcases exquisite landscape design from the 18th century. The park features trails, monuments, classical temples, and sculptures designed by Duke Carl August with input from Goethe. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Haus am Horn, a prototype for German single-family homes located on a hill above the park.
Peaceful with no noisy playground, even cyclists are barred from most of it, so a secure place to walk and jog. Quite a few dog-walkers, but didn't see any receptacles for 'poo', so probably pick it up and take it with you..!

This park is very big and beautiful! Perfect place for a picnic or a walk, spending time with friends or on your own with a book. It’s also very pleasant to ride a bike here. The stone bridge and the view on the castle are my personal favorites in this park.
Anastasia Y — Google review
The park is wide and wonderful. There is a lot of nature, of wild animals and it is well-kept. There was a nice local food stand by the bridge and, most importantly, you could lose yourself in the green around. Only negative thing was a lack of WC facilities.

Leuchtenburg

Historical landmark
Medieval hilltop fortress featuring a porcelain museum & sweeping views of the countryside.
Leuchtenburg Castle is absolutely stunning! We attended a wedding here, and it was truly a magical experience. The medieval atmosphere is breathtaking, and exploring the castle feels like stepping back in time. One of the highlights was the unique plate-throwing area – such a fun tradition for good luck! The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. And to top it all off, we partied until 11 right in the church – how cool is that?! Highly recommend this place for a memorable event or just to soak up the history and beauty
J.R A — Google review
Thank you for this wonderful experience! Many castles we have seen, but in this case, this is one of the few examples, a successful collaboration. Art (porcelain museum) and history (castle and its reconstruction). Compact but at the same time filled with interesting details at every point). Special mention should be made of the weather, which allowed us to walk around the neighborhood, take wonderful photos, relax and warm up! Views and surroundings!
Ivan G — Google review
In the village there are no parking places, but at the entry there is a paid one and then a free one. You have to walk up a bit. The view is nice. The exhibitions inside are wonderful , especially the porcelain one and the one in the tower.
SVC — Google review
15euro tickets per person. But you really get a good deal in my opinion. You get to visit inside the castle, see the porcelaine museum, throw your own plates with wishes on it, visit the tower, if you are lucky hear the organ player. There was a lot to do for the little ones as well as for adults. There are small fppd stands for cakes, waffles and bratwurst. You really have a nice view from here as well.
Kharuna R — Google review
Great castle with an interesting history. The porcelain exhibit is highly recommend. They guide you through the whole history of porcelain in an interesting and entertaining way. Was really fun to toss the dishes as well. You should definitively take your time to see the tour. More over the castle looks very nice and kept in good condition.

It's a beautiful castle, with great views of the surrounding area. Enough information everywhere to make walking through the castle interesting. I recommend going there by car. The foot paths going to the castle are neglected. Not to be recommended for young children and elderly people. It's a steep hike.
Haitse W — Google review
Wonderful place, big and impressive. Many informations about the castle everywhere, especially the old cruel "tools" of the medieval time (torture) were a highlight. In the modern building is an interesting exhibition, it's worth a walk.

We came on Saturday, didn't have to wait in line to enter. Place wasn't crowded at all, but parking space is a little bit small. There are few pools with different temperature of water and 2 jacuzzis inside. One pool is a quiet area with a huge dome roof and a huge mandala on the top, really great area to relax. Outside area also has a jacuzzi and a big pool. There are a few nudist saunas.

Spent lovely four hours at the Therme. Please notice that you cannot rent/hire towels, flip flops or anything else pool related. Stuff can only be bought. There are a couple of different pools with different waters and temperatures, also a couple of whirlpools. We had some potatoe wedges and fries from the restaurant which were nice. All in all it‘s quite clean and tidy
Hans D — Google review
The place is filled with local guests but it can be an international attraction. It is about one hour ride on local train from Leipzig, but please be warned the train service is one per hour. Check the train schedule unless you want to wait for 55 minutes for the local train.

We caught a happy hour with 3 hours for 42 euros. There are several indoor pools with thermal water, 2 outside ones , jacuzzi baths and sauna area. The facilities are fine. The bathroom area was very dirty towards end of closing hours. We rented towels for 3 euros, the smell was not good, price a bit high However, the place is very German, if I may say so. Little English at reception, no English on written signs. Eating area just near main pool , people eating and drinking a lot, unpleasant smell. There is only sauna area with nude access or at least it is not clear if you can go also with your swimming wear, which might be more appropriate for your culture.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Toskana Therme Bad Sulza, and I must say, it was an experience beyond my expectations! From the moment I stepped foot into the park, I was greeted by a sense of tranquility and excitement that set the tone for an incredible day ahead. The variety of pools and attractions available at the aqua park is truly impressive. Whether you're looking for a relaxing soak in the mineral-rich thermal pools to ease your muscles, or an adrenaline-pumping adventure down the twisting water slides, there's something for everyone. The way the park seamlessly combines both relaxation and excitement is truly commendable. The well-maintained facilities and cleanliness of the park stood out immediately. The staff's dedication to keeping the premises immaculate did not go unnoticed. The changing rooms, showers, and restroom areas were all in impeccable condition, making my visit comfortable and enjoyable. One of the highlights of my visit was the variety of thermal pools available. Each pool is set at a different temperature, catering to various preferences. It was such a pleasure to alternate between the warm pools and the cooler ones, experiencing the benefits of the natural thermal waters. The peaceful ambiance around the pools, with lush greenery and comfortable loungers, added to the overall sense of relaxation. The food options within the park were surprisingly diverse and delicious. I had a satisfying meal from one of the on-site eateries

This is a beautiful and secluded place where you can just relax or have fun with friends. There are indoors and outdoors swimming pools as well as sauna. The view from the outdoors swimming pool is spectacular. Plus, they are continually playing music under the water. The price was not crazy and it was actually a very good deal for the quality of the place.
Daniela L — Google review
It’s clean and relaxing. The water temperature outside is not as warm as I expected but the air temperature inside is warm enough and satisfying. Nebra Ark - Experiencing the Sky Disc

Striking, contemporary visitor center with bronze-age astronomy exhibits, plus digital planetarium.
Great level of comprehensive detail and cool souvenirs. One gripe is that there’s literally no one who speaks English, though there is an audio guide that covers the highlights. Staff are friendly and helpful.
A — Google review
Arche Nebra exhibition about the discovery of the 'Himmelsscheibe' or Sky Disc. Has recently been updated and upgraded. Family ticket €23 - 2 adults and 2 children (7 / 8). Spent about 2 hours here including VR experience and planetarium. Audio guides available for the main exhibition, but since a recent upgrade to the planetarium, not available in other languages, so would wait until they have sorted this out if your first language is not German. Check on the website or contact in advance to find out. Some interactive elements for children. Would be good to have a craft area to make the sky disc. Would be good to have a treasure hunt for younger children. Happy to support this if required. There was a colouring book on a table downstairs, but it was not yet available for purchase. The children's book was a bit difficult language-wise and the simple language book more for adults. This is a great place to visit and when the language guides are fully up and running for the planetarium part, then can recommend for all visitors from around the world. It is a bit out of the way, but easily located with a free car park at the foot of the hill. Disabled people and those with low mobility can be driven to the entrance. Only steps are down into the planetarium seating area, but possibly enough space for a wheelchair to remain at the back. Lift to toilets and all floors. Cafe closed Mondays and Fridays.

nice place too visit good walking an 🚵‍♀️
Michael A — Google review
Waste of time and money, with one good thing. Modern history of the Disc starts with robbery, and they do keep up the tradition! The entrance is 9,50 euros, on top of time and money spent to get to the place, which is in middle of nowhere. The Disc itself is in Prehistory Museum in Halle (at 10 euros MUCH more worth it), so if you want to see the actual thing don't bother to go to Nebra. If you don't speak German, don't go either - they are so unprepared for foreign visitors it's ridiculous. I did get an English audioguide, after being talked to in German despite my protestations in three languages that I don't speak it. The English version has a fraction of information a German speaking person would get (about 1/6, judging by info about other bronze age artifacts found on site). The info you do get is oversimplified. There isn't a single word of written English in entire place. The only good thing is that one can handle a replica of the disc. The replica doesn't look much like original, but it's a relatively minor drawback for the site.
Monika Z — Google review
Expensive, small, bad organized, only in german. There are so much interesting about the sky-disk - and this museum does not tell anything. And long walk from parking to location.

Romanesque & Gothic place of worship with sculptures by the Naumburg Master & a treasury museum.
What a beautiful place to visit. We went there in July. It was absolutely stunning to see all the flowers blooming around and walking around.
Amrita K — Google review
Unusual cathedral with two choirs and some intriguing features from as late as the 1980s. I'd recommend getting an audio guide (included with the tickets) in order to appreciate the many details, though in English at least, it is a bit pompous (hence the 4 stars). There are some fantastic gargoyles visible from the garden.

Extremely rich architecture. We had the privilege of a one hour guided tour and learned a lot about the history of the dome, the unusual case of the founder figures, the narrow path to paradise, why you say "Buch aufschlagen" (to "beat open a book") in German for opening a book and many more details to understand what was going on for centuries behind these walls. An absolute must visit.

A very interesting church with an interesting history. The art in the church is unique and striking. The cathedral itself is worth a day trip to see this beautifully preserved 1,000 year old World Heritage Site. Sadly, the cathedral is about the only thing worth seeing in Naumburg. We were there on a Saturday and the town rolls up the sidewalk at noon except for a few cafes near the cathedral.

The State Museum of Prehistory Halle (Saale) is a renowned archaeological museum in Central Europe, showcasing important prehistoric and medieval artifacts. It features a remarkable permanent exhibition that spans from the Stone Age to the early Iron Age, offering a chronological journey through Saxony-Anhalt's archaeological discoveries. The museum's centerpiece is the famous Nebra Sky Disk, a UNESCO Memory of the World document that provides insights into ancient astronomical knowledge.
For €7 entrance and €3 for audio guide this was fantastic value for money. There is the adults audio and the children's audio so all educated about our prehistory. Great cafe on ground floor. You can take pictures but no flash.

Absolutely wonderful artefacts BUT!!! All text is in german so we foreigners are kept out. No brochure for the different floors. This could be easily helped by asking a highschool class to translate all the information on each floor to english and then have them set a QR code next to each text. I am so intreaged by all this interesting history but feel cheated since my german is not good enough to understand the information in german. I asked if they had audial information in english but- no. Why?

Such an interesting and well-curated exhibition - you can spend several hours here. The only negative was that several staff members were rather unfriendly, especially in the Café and gift shop.

Wonderful museum that is packed with unique artefacts mainly from the prehistoric periods (although later periods are also covered). For prehistorians, it is a paradise place! The Nebra sky disc is of course amazing, but I'd say I enjoyed even more some of the other exhibits, eg. the Shamanin's room and the early figurines. Thank you for providing at least the main information in English, it would be nice if more of the information was translated!

Great experience. A typical traditional museum where the visitor is a passive observer. The only thing personal in Museum have to think about is the fact that some visitors are not German speakers and that it would be great to put English language notes under the exhibits. Zoologischer Garten Halle, also known as Bergzoo, was established in 1901 and is located on the Reilsberg hill in the northern part of the city. Spanning nine hectares, it houses nearly 1,700 animals from around 250 species. The zoo focuses on mountain animals and South American fauna.
What a lovely zoo, well worth a visit if you are in Halle. Easy to find, reasonably priced, great location, and what a magnificent view of the city from the top of the zoo. Very friendly and helpful staff. Reasonably priced snacks and drinks. Well designed play area for the children, as well as a cute petting zoo with the most adorable little goats. On this occasion, I didn't make any comment about garlic and rosemary! Be aware it is on a hill and might not be suitable for someone with walking difficulties. But there are plenty of areas to sit.

The zoo does not impress, Animals very few ( maybe it is better ), a lot of empty enclosures. More walking on the roads than watching. Signage chaotic. Such a place to go once on a boring weekend. The view from the lighthouse at the top improves the overall rating, but is that what a zoo is all about ?....

I’m gonna start with the positives. Buying the tickets in advance (online) is cheaper compared to buying the tickets in the zoo itself. However you can’t just scan the tickets on a machine and go in but you need to go to a counter. I bought the cheaper tickets since I’m a student and the lady only said “Ermäßigung” (card that students get in Germany), I absolutely understand that she needs to check it since it was cheaper but she was quite rude. Also the price just doesn’t justify the experience there. There is a very good panorama of the city. You can borrow a small “vehicle” for the kids since they are gonna be tired since it is pretty steep at some places. The zoo itself is very pretty and it has a lot of animals you can look at. You can read about the animals being held captive there. Also you can look at the animals as they’re being fed, which is as I can imagine a good entertainment for the kids. However sometimes the animals aren’t to be seen numerous times throughout the day.

Smaller zoo with good view points on the city. Accessible easily via tram. Here and there some public feedings and shows with animals.

There were few animals except for a few species of birds which were numerous. All the animals were sleepy and silent. Unfortunately, many shelves were empty. But the variety of animals was great and there were beautiful spaces. There were places for rest, eating and children's playground. The whole zoo could be seen in 2 hours.

The Zoo layout is well planned, so it's easy to get around. There were many animals to see even with the Covid-19 restrictions. All of the inside visiting areas were closed, but felt good to support the zoo and see red pandas as well as their very active meerkats. When the pandemic is over I'll definitely come for another visit. I recommend this zoo for families with young children.

It is one of the most well-designed, clean, healthy, well-cared Zoo. I saw many workers around who were carefully taking care of animals. At the end, it is a Zoo and animals are under captive, but it was relieving to see that animals are under good care.

Nice zoo in the city. People and children can visit. Accessible with public transport. Eating and drinking stalls in the zoo. Zoo is equipped with Benches all over its path.

A must see when you are around in Halle with kids. Easy to reach by tram directly from the main station. (3 stops only) We found the concept awesome! This is the oldest chocolate factory in Germany with very impressive history and flair. You can even taste different sorts of pralines. The factory store is great and staff is very friendly. Ideally to buy some gifts😀. Highly recommended and anytime again.

This factory is located about 20 minutes away from the train station in Halle (by foot). The shop is big and offers good prices and products you can't always find in supermarkets.

Chocolate for factory price, I'm in! Big discount on pralines, especially the bags of 500g, about 5€ for 500g instead of 10€! Really nice service, put our products in our bags for us :)

An interesting place to visit. I liked the chocolate museum but think it might benefit from becoming a bit more interactive. Being able to look at the sweet stuff being produced rocks. The factory outlet is great as well.
