Castelul Corvinilor, also known as Corvins' Castle, is a Renaissance fortress that was reconstructed in the 19th century. This well-preserved Gothic masterpiece has been featured in several movies and is one of the largest castles in Europe. It holds historical significance as it was rumored to be the place where Vlad the Impaler, also known as Dracula, was imprisoned for several years.
Loved it. It is everything you'd hope a castle would be. Along with its rich history, the castle still has many of its Gothic architectural features, some remaining frescoes, endless staircases, passages, rooms and towers to explore. A whole lot of fun. We managed to get there just as it was opening, and being the first ones to enter had the castle to ourselves, at least for a short while. Definitely one of my favourite castles in Romania.
Chris B — Google review
Incredible experience. Also great on Halloween, as it's very spooky and theme decorated. The torture chambers were also spooky, and I do not recommend entering with a child that's not above 12+. It's very spaceful and wasn't that busy! One of the best castles I've been too and definitely recommend visiting it!
Sara S — Google review
The castle is impressive from the outside but inside there are predominantly empty rooms. However, it's fun too walk through corridors, stairs and passages. There is an amazing view from one of the towers. The nearest parking is 20 lei per day.
Tanya K — Google review
We did a daytrip to Hunedoara from Sibiu. Initially I planned to visit it on our way to Timisoara, but it would fall on a Monday, and on Mondays the castle opens at noon which would affect our plans for the day. Street parking around the castle is tight as they closed the parking lot for some reason. Admission is heavy by Romanian standards at 50 lei (25 lei for seniors) but it's worth it. The castle is very well kept and the interior looks pretty modern in spots but the castle is large and impressive. I'm no fan of medieval castles but this one is a must.
Ron S — Google review
The castle was very impressive and beautiful. There was plenty to see and do there as a castle/medieval period enthusiast. The price of entry was reasonable 50lei/adult. Only few downsides were that the castle was under renovation (it's understandable) and that guidance in the castle was confusing. The rooms had numbers but they were all mixed up.
Lassi N — Google review
I had the great pleasure of visiting Hunedoara Castle, also known as Corvin Castle. This magnificent fortress, located in Transylvania, was originally built in the 15th century by John Hunyadi, one of Hungary’s most powerful noblemen and military leaders. The castle served both as a stronghold and a noble residence, and over the centuries it has witnessed many historical events, legends, and even dark tales that add to its mysterious charm. It is an amazing place that truly allows you to feel the atmosphere of real medieval times, with its massive towers, stone courtyards, and slightly dark interiors that whisper stories from the past. There aren’t many tourists, the parking area is close to the castle, and overall it’s not an expensive trip. The panoramic view from the castle walls is breathtaking! Definitely, this place is worth visiting — go there and step back in time! It's worth to arrive at place to see the castle during day and night - two different stories & effect! WOW....gothic style is really DARK at night! Some tailes connected: There is a rumor that Dracula - Vlad III (Vlad the Impaler), the ruler of Wallachia, was imprisoned here for seven years. See added pictures - as you can see the tradition of impaing still "lives". Corvin Castle could have been the model (or at least one of the models) for the fictional “Castle Dracula” because of its dramatic Gothic-look and its connection to Vlad. The Legend of Hunedoara Castle Just after building the castle, its lord-builder, John Hunyadi, ordered a great well to be dug in the courtyard. He promised freedom to the Turkish prisoners who could find water in the rocky ground. For years, they worked day and night, carving through stone with hope and desperation. After fifteen long years, water finally sprang from the earth. But instead of granting them freedom, Hunyadi broke his promise. Before the prisoners were executed, one of them carved an inscription on the well’s wall: “You have water, but no soul.” - see one of the pic. (in arab). To this day, the well still stands in the castle yard — and some say that at night, if you listen closely, you can hear the echo of the prisoners’ voices rising from its depths.
Slawomir P — Google review
Among the few castles in Romania, it is in the process of renovation. Over the years, different parts of the castle have been opened for visits and you can climb in all the towers. The steps of the stairs are high and not easy to climb if you are not trained. Unfortunately, the landscape around the castle is not special, the castle being in an old communist industrial area. You can also visit recreated torture chambers.
Monica A — Google review
We didn’t get inside the castle, it was too expensive (50 Lei per person). The castle is beautiful. They started to refurbish the castle so some of it covered at this time. There are few souvenirs stores on the way to castle and we loved them - lots of beautiful souvenirs, very nice. A parking near by (can’t remember the price, around 20 Lei). Toilets at the parking for 3 Lei.

The Fortress of Deva

Mentioned on

Tourist information center
Sights & Landmarks
Cetatea Devei is a medieval fortress situated on the top of a volcanic hill that offers a panoramic view of the city of Deva. To reach the fortress, visitors can either take an inclined lift or walk up from the city park. The elevator ride costs 20 RON for adults and 10 RON for children. It is recommended to take the elevator up and then walk down to enjoy the scenery.
It’s quite hard to climb all the way up the stairs, but it’s definitely worth it once you reach the top. At night, the view from above is absolutely beautiful, with the lights shining below and a gentle breeze that makes the experience even more special.
Becca — Google review
Bring your walking shoes as there’s plenty to be done here. The cable car was not working but you can drive most of the way (keep an eye out for the small signs). Prepare yourself for 200+ stairs. Well worth the visit as there are some fantastic look out points. Would have been great to learn some history of the fortress. Perhaps some QR codes of plaques with information. It’s clearly had a bit of a refurbishment, but some more information for tourists would have earned that extra star.
Ste A — Google review
The castle is in a nice condition, but room and glass building are completely empty, nothing to see. Actually if you go up with the elevator, not so much things to see, option to do. Elevator works till 5pm which is to short opening hours, a lot of people arrived just before 5pm, we had to go back on the next day.
Zsolt D — Google review
A great place to visit if you're nearby. The stairs are very steep, but you can walk around them on a regular path. The views from the top are great, but there aren't enough descriptions of the place.
Pawel B — Google review
Many stairs to conquer, but definitely worth it. The view is nice, especially at night. The renovation in the past years paid off.
Marius A — Google review
It might be beautiful up there but we were unable to reach up due to the telegondola technical issues. The children are too small to climb up. The page is not updated with when it working or if is not working the telegondola. We travelled 4 hours to go up and we went back disappointed. I gave 2 stars for the lady from the informations which was very nice and because the toilets were really clean.
Mikky M — Google review
The actual fortress is great with gorgeous views. Getting to it, it's a different story, the funicular was not working, the streets to get up there are very narrow and difficult to navigate, coming down the same thing. I could have skipped it.
Samuel V — Google review
Wow! The Acropolis of Deva! Perched up on a volcanic hill towering over the city! It was majestic and thoroughly worth the short walk in the intense heat, after the shuttle bus ride up most of the way. The views are breathtaking! A highlight of my trip to Romania.

Sarmizegetusa Regia

Archaeological site
Sights & Landmarks
Ancient Ruins
Sarmizegetusa Regia is an ancient archaeological site located on a mountaintop, featuring fortress and temple ruins dating back to the 2nd century CE. Once serving as the capital of the Dacian Kingdom, this town was situated atop a 1200-meter-high mountain and enclosed by massive stone blocks. Accessible via a challenging road followed by a woodland path, the site offers visitors a chance to explore megalithic artifacts amidst lush vegetation.
Very nice trip. At the base of Sarmizegetusa there are plenty of parking lots. From the car you walk in nature about 1 km to Sarmizegetusa. Beautiful piece of history of the Dacians. You can spend 1.30 hours there. Very relaxing.
Tav H — Google review
The guides are very knowledgeable and there are many. The remains are amazing and it's so important to know the history on site. Plus it was a sacred place so it's interesting to be around and feel the nature, as it's so isolated from the cities
Mariana A — Google review
Unique and special ruins in the mountains at a height of more than 1000 m. They look different from all other ruins and almost 2000 years old.

Very interesting. If you are a history buff, you have to go here. I wish we had more time to make stops along the way
Kimberly S — Google review
Very beautiful place with an amazing energy. It was a rainy day for us, so the place was not crowded; even with the rain, we could enjoy the sights and walk around admiring the nature.
Lorena-Iulia R — Google review
Wonderful place! The site is about 1 kilometer away from the parking spot. The entrance fee is also cheap. A must see if you’re in Hunedoara county.
Viviana — Google review
Sarmizegetusa Regia is a place full of spiritual charge and a wonderful place to visit. Free parking nearby.
Alexandru D — Google review
Amazing place and experience, it's really well kept and you don't really need hiking equipment to go up there. A big plus is the entrance fee is really cheap. They have an on-site spring with drinkable water near the ruins and toilets near the entrance. We visited this place on a public holiday (1st of June) and there were plenty of parking spaces available. Be careful when driving up there, the road is narrow and some people forget that. Drive safe! A must go to location whenever you are in Hunedoara county. Will definetly visit again.
Robert D — Google review
I've been here 5 times and I'd go every year, if possible. It is my place of peace, of a very positive energy that I can only link to Mother Nature and its supreme beauty. Go, without a care in the world, you will like it here!

Coronation Cathedral

Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Reunification Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Coronation in Alba Iulia, is a stately Romanian Orthodox cathedral with a rich historical significance. Built in 1922 with support from the Royal House of Romania, it was the site of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie's coronation. The cathedral boasts pleasant Romanian architecture and features an inner courtyard and a separate bell tower. It is well-maintained and blends seamlessly within the citadel and neighboring buildings.
Magnificent exterior and beautiful grounds, especially on a sunny evening as a priest walks round beating a plank of wood with a stick. The bell tower over the gate is particularly impressive. During the evening prayer service there is a bit of a PA system clash with the Catholic Church next door.
Byron F — Google review
Full of history, beautiful place, lots to do and places to eat.
Susan D — Google review
This is an Orthodox cathedral that was initially built in 1922 and was the place where the coronation procession of King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie took place. It has a pleasant Romanian architecture and it can be visited throughout the year, outside of mass house. There's an inner courtyard and a separate bell tower. There's no visitation fee and you can take photos inside as well.

Orthodox cathedral in the historical centre of Alba Julia offers a very interesting wire onto a well kept garden and architecture, where the outside arched walls, a bit Roman Villa alike, keep at its center safe the cathedral building. The entrance itself is a masterpiece.

Beautiful place and well designed / renovated to be for everyone. You can take a stroll and admire the view, you can eat, drink, sit and even bike around. Very clean and maintained, beautiful flowers everywhere. This is one of the most beautiful places we visited in this part of Romania. We were lucky and stumbled upon an reenactment event with lots of romans and dacians and even barbarians.

Beautiful and walkable citadel. The best in Romania. Not only can you see the inside, you can also walk the perimeter which has restaurants, parks all on a nicely built path. So much to see and so much walking to do! This place also has an incredible amount of history and you're able to enter the halls and churches inside. Has some old Roman ruins as well. Overall, a must visit.

✅ The Alba Carolina Citadel is a stunning star-shaped fortress located in Alba Iulia, Romania, and it’s one of the most impressive Vauban-style fortifications in Eastern Europe 🌟. Built between 1715 and 1738 during the Habsburg rule, it was designed by Italian architect Giovanni Morando Visconti and later completed by other engineers. 🏰 Highlights of the Citadel - Seven Bastions: Each named after saints or historical figures, forming the iconic star shape. The citadel features seven gates, aligned along an east-west axis known as the Tourist Route of the Citadel. Inside, you’ll find the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Michael, the Coronation Cathedral, museums, gardens, and monuments like the equestrian statue of Michael the Brave. 🎟️Free Access: Open day and night for walks, with museums and cafes operating on their own schedules. I highly recommend it to visit once in your life! 🔝 Visited September 2025

Renovated with paved roads, a fountain, pavilion, casino building, and restaurant by the lake, the park offers ample opportunities to unwind and enjoy nature.

During my visit last week, there were some events (live music, DJ) happening near the fountain. It was amazing vibe. It was a lovely park, very clean and very green. There were water drinking fountains, outdoor exercise equipment available. People could hire pedal boards. Additionally, there were plenty of seats available. It was a surprise to see people hanging hammocks on the trees and relaxing in them. Trees looked sturdy enough to hold the extra weight. This park is great for exercising or going for a walk, relaxing alone or with friends and family.

The Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden, part of Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, is a sprawling 14-hectare masterpiece founded in 1920 by Professor Alexandru Borza. This historical monument houses over 10,000 plant species from around the world, organized into distinct sectors like ornamental, phytogeographical, systematic, economic, and medicinal. The garden's rich history and architectural allure make it an enchanting oasis for relaxation and exploration.
Beautiful botanical garden, plenty of things to see and really big. There are huge exotic plants in the greenhouse and the atmosphere near the little river is amazing and calming. The price is fantastic , mostly for students and kids. My inly critique is that there are a couple broken bridges and wooden structures that should be repaired and fixed up. But still a great place, one could easily spend two hours here, even half a day if someone wants to study or relax in a calming environment.

Amazing! An impressive and peaceful place where nature, history, and science come together. The garden covers about 14 hectares and includes over 10,000 plant species from around the world. Highlights include the beautiful Japanese Garden, the Roman Garden with ancient artifacts, and the tropical greenhouses filled with exotic plants. There’s also a tower offering a panoramic view. Well-organized, educational, and relaxing — definitely worth a visit if you’re in the city!

Calm & nice place to visit for a reasonable price. Huge collection of different species. Most ways are easy to walk, but not always wheelchair/ stroller friendly. Must check timings and dates beforehand in order to be able to visit the glasshouse too! Check the website in advance, contains all useful info. Toilets: could be more/ at frequented places. Definitely worths a visit.

The imposing stone and bronze Matthias Corvinus Statue, erected in 1902, is a must-see attraction around Christmas time. Visitors can enjoy the festive atmosphere with Christmas music, brightly lit wooden storefronts selling handmade goods, hot chocolate and tea, a carousel ride amidst historic buildings and monuments. The aroma of hot chimney cakes cooking over a fire adds to the magical ambiance along with the sound of people laughing on the outdoor skating rink.
A must see when you are in Cluj Napoca. The monument is impressive by size, but when you get the cathedral in the background it gets to be even more impressive.

The city is part of the hungarian and romanian common history. Both of the nation can be proud of the architecture, the universities culture and the mostly youth population how is eager to add more and more to this town. An absolute gorgeous are to visit around Christmas time. Christmas music playing, little wooden lodes ( store fronts) all lit up selling hand made goods, mugs of hot chocolate and tea, a carousal, Historic buildings and Monuments, hot chimney cakes (hollow cakes covered in cinnamon sugar, cooked over a fire), and the sound of people laughing on the outdoor skating rink. When we went in 2014 Coca Cola and Santa Clause also happened to be there. Literally the most perfect "hallmark Christmas" you can imagine.

If you are in Cluj, take break to visit this place Mathias Rex, beautiful architecture behind the church. You will also find good restaurants near the monument. Take a break and have a visit to Mathias Rex. There is a nice restaurant called Marty Eatery which serves delicious food with loads of options, I personally liked Chicken wings with few chilled pints of beers.

Cheile Turzii, a stunning natural reserve in Cluj County, is a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts and families alike. This breathtaking gorge features well-marked trails that meander through lush landscapes, crossing charming streams and sturdy bridges. With its rich history dating back to the Roman Empire—evidenced by various artifacts—the area was designated as a Natural Reserve in 1938 and later recognized as a UNESCO natural monument.
Cheile Turzii Gorge is absolutely breathtaking! The hike alongside the river with the towering cliffs on either side was an unforgettable experience. I saw diverse bird species and the views were simply stunning. The trail was easy to follow, and the natural scenery was out of this world. Definitely a 5-star destination!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An unforgettable experience at Cheile Turzii! The landscapes are breathtaking and the trails offer both adventure and peaceful moments in nature. We enjoyed tasty traditional food, especially the grilled mici, and relaxed on comfy chairs under umbrellas with stunning views around us. Friendly atmosphere and good services — I highly recommend visiting this place!

Beautiful hiking trail. I recommend using hiking gear if you plan going further and explore. You have plenty of spots where you can just sit and admire natura, besides other activities such as supervised rock climbing and cave finding(only small caves)

The ASTRA National Museum Complex is a cultural gem in Sibiu, Romania, featuring four museums that delve into ethnology and history. One of its highlights is the ASTRA Open Air Museum, nestled in a picturesque forest beside a tranquil lake. Covering 250 acres, it showcases over 300 buildings representing diverse architectural styles from villages across Romania.
It is a wonderful place to be. Walking round a lake through the forest while are able to visit old water, wind mills, hunting lodges, winery, buildings and tools, but also housing as they used to be. Can get into the windmill and see how it worked. Can visit the houses and see how people used to live. You can enter with your pet, as it is a pet friendly museum. You can spend easily few hours there visiting the museum as it is placed on a vast land, count at least 4-5 hours to visit the whole site. I recommend it for a piece of history but also for a relaxing walk in different zones, forest, along the lake, plane fields, along a spring. Prices are reasonable.

Amazing and super interesting place, totally worth visiting. It's a huge park, perfectly maintained. Parking is free but in busy days it would be difficult to find a spot. In the park, you will find plenty of shadow in hot summer days. There are a lot of rest areas, and wonderful kids playing area.

Amazing— The word “ASTRA” is significant in Romania because it refers to a historic cultural association and some major heritage institutions central to Romanian national identity and Transylvanian history. Cultural Association and National Awakening ASTRA (Asociația Transilvană pentru Literatura Română și Cultura Poporului Român) was founded in 1861 in Sibiu, Transylvania, as a society dedicated to promoting Romanian literature, education, and culture during the Austro-Hungarian rule. ASTRA played a vital role in the Romanian national awakening by supporting schools, libraries, publications, and scholarly gatherings focused on Romanian heritage. Its efforts were instrumental in boosting Romanian consciousness, particularly among Transylvanian Romanians who faced assimilation pressures.

I absolutely loved this place and enjoyed being there. I was on an organized tour, so with the free time given, I was only able to explore half of it so I explored the older section. There is a magnificent delta and you see different architecture representing different places in Romania. I was there about an hour. Definitely not enough time. There was enough english to understand what you were looking at. There was lots of modern wooden art everywhere and a huge gift shop. I wish I had the time to just sit and enjoy the fall colors and wild life playing on the lake.

This is a Must to do place if you are travelling in Sibiu region. The museum is so rich in its history and depicts so nicely the traditional life of Romanian people in the past. During our visit there was even a national Olympiad of Romanian culture happening in this place, which allowed us to meet people from all around the region of Romania. One thing which united all of them were there beautiful dresses, beautiful smiles and warm hearts.

Great collection of traditional buildings from all around Romania! Our advice would be to have life actors who would be representatives of certain time period, talk about crafts and introduce visitors to past lifestyle. That way it would be more interactive, interesting and educational.

The Bridge of Lies in Sibiu may be small, but it’s packed with stories. Locals say it creaks when someone lies while standing on it—spooky and fun to test out. Built in 1859 as Romania’s first cast-iron bridge, it connects Little Square to Huet Square and offers a great view of the old town. It’s one of the most photographed spots in the city, with a great view of the lower town below. A quick stop with character while wandering Sibiu’s historic center.

The Council Tower, dating back to the 13th century, stands as a symbol of Sibiu between Grand and Lesser Squares. Originally a gateway in the city's fortifications, it now offers panoramic views of the town for a small fee. The tower is located near Piata Mare and Piata Mica, where historic guild buildings once housed craftsmen. Visitors can explore this area and then climb the tower's seven stories to enjoy breathtaking city vistas.
Was here in November, the minute they opened. The entrance is not from the square side by from the side that faces bridge of lies, it’s a small wooden door. You pay, take steep spiral staircase up the tower, passing a couple of floors of spaces with occasional exhibits. When you reach the top - the view of Sibiu is beautiful! Very cheap (I believe it was about $2), but cash only!

Very beautiful birds’ eyes view of Sibiu. Best time to go is before the sunset on a sunny day. My pictures are not the best because of the cloudy conditions.

A lovely tower that perfectly fits the vibe of the square. The nearby streets add even more charm – those kinds of cozy alleys where you might stumble upon something interesting or at least a great café. The tower dates back to the 13th century and originally served as a defensive lookout and fire watch. Today, it's a nice spot for a short climb with beautiful views over the old town. Or you can simply enjoy it from below, as it calmly completes the picturesque feel of the whole area. :) (instagram --> michaelnae)

For a small fee you can view a part of the beautiful city-with its gorgeous architecture. It is a little narrow climbing up the tower, so keep that in mind. The Fortified Church of Biertan

Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the heart of Transylvania, the Fortified Church of Biertan is a stunning example of late Gothic architecture dating back to 1522. This UNESCO World Heritage site boasts impressive defensive walls and towers that once made it unconquerable. Inside, visitors can admire Renaissance art and an ornate sacristy lock with 15 bolts that can be simultaneously activated. The church also has a unique Prison Tower where couples seeking divorce were held for two weeks in an attempt to reconcile.
The fortified church is located in a traditional Transylvanian village, with an amazing view over the surrounding hills. The visit starts with a climb through the covered staircase. Once you reach the top of the stairs you can walk around the fortifications and the towers and also you can visit the church. Inside we found a lovely lady, which gave a very good overview of the history of this place and also she shared some interesting stories about it.
Viorel I — Google review
The church is on a hill with walls and tower. From the outside, it looks very modest. But from the inside you could see a beautiful altar, orgel and paintings. The ticket can be bought at the small bookshop at the entrance. Then, you climb the roofed stairs up to the church. The little infamous house for couples is located at the back of the church. The story goes, in the past couples before getting a divorce, would be "locked up" there, where they should spend time together in the small room. At some point, many of the couples were said to stay together.
Deepblue S — Google review
Amazing place. The walls around the church, the courtyard and the church is fascinating. Not to mentions the craftsmanship of the lock on one of the doors. The place is still waiting for a big renovation, but it's still well worth a visit.

Worth the trip! I visited the Biertan fortified church and was lucky enough to have the place almost to myself This 15th-century Transylvanian gem is perched on a hill, surrounded by not one, not two, but three defensive walls (clearly, they took "do not disturb" very seriously back then) Fun fact: they even had a "marital prison" to help couples reconcile 😂 Entrance Fee: 20 lei (updated 08.05.2025)

I visited the Târgu Mureș Zoo with my family and we had an amazing experience. The zoo layout is perfect, well-organized, and has a wide variety of animals. It was my first time seeing lions, tigers, elephants, which was unforgettable. Unlike other zoos I’ve visited in the past that had very few animals, this one had plenty of animals with plenty to see. Tickets were approx $25 for 3 adults. Perfect deal for a tourist. A must visit for adults and kids!

The Gothic architecture and guided tours provide insight into its historical and cultural importance. As a museum, it showcases valuable exhibits like 15th-century altar pieces and remarkably preserved murals dating back over 500 years.
Probably the most beautiful evangelical church in Sighisoara. The church is situated on the top of the Citadel Hill, standing there from the IV century. Inside there are some impressive paintings, restored in 2004. It's one of the must see objectives from Sighisoara
Gabi G — Google review
This beautiful church was my favorite stop on a whirlwind tour of Romania. Yes, it is a long walk up the covered stairs. The admission to the church is inexpensive, and when we went, the man and woman working there were wonderful and friendly. We were treated to an excellent presentation on the church's history and the area. There is so much rich history and they were able to provide so many details.
Marc C — Google review
The Church on the Hill is one of the largest Gothic churches in Transylvania and it's located on top of the highest hill in Sighișoara, at about 429 meters above sea level. The church can be visited for 15 RON (~€3) per person and the price includes a small printout that contains information about the church's history and most important exhibits that can be seen inside, including a small crypt.
Liviu-Cristian M — Google review
Unfortunately, the church was not as interesting as we expected. Like some other churches we’ve visited, the renovations have erased much of its historical character, leaving it looking more like an amusement park than a heritage site. The ladies at the ticket counter, who also hand out printed information, were unable to tell us where the memorial to the German soldiers (located next to the church) was — we had to find it ourselves. Overall, it didn’t meet our expectations. And to be honest, if you’re short on time and don’t want to tackle a long climb through a tunnel with many stairs — which is quite demanding even for a fit person — I would not recommend it.
Nina M — Google review
After you climb 170 stairs and get all hot, you can get inside and cool off😂 Inside it the temperature is lower than outside and feels nice. To get inside you pay a 10 Ron ticket. There are 2 persons responsible there, and they tell you stories about the paintings from the walls and legends related to it. Is very nice. You can also visit the crypt. There is an old coffin visible there. Worth a visit!
Andreea D — Google review
Well restored Lutheran Church (originally Western Christian / Catholic) with older medieval lower church serving as crypt. The personnel at the door was very helpful, an information sheet with several languages is available. Some frescos. Some of the wooden aktar panels (e.g St Martin) and the choir stools are quite beautiful. The acoustics is great (I was encouraged to sing from the altar...).
René M — Google review
This was a beautiful gothic representation of the Saxon church. The surrounding are beautiful especially in the fall. The cemetery is just as interesting if not more so. I feel I spent more time walking through and enjoying the cemetery more than the church itself.
Chris R — Google review
Well worth the climb up 176 steps. The church is magnificent inside, and visiting the crypt is just creepy enough to send shivers down your spine. The guy collecting the entrance fee was very friendly and told me a little about the church. It was used the the saxon (German) residents in the area, but most of them have moved away for some reason, so today this lovely building rarely sees a service.

The Clock Tower, a 14th-century iconic landmark in Sighisoara, served as the main gate to the city's citadel and controlled the entrance to the half-mile-long defensive wall. It stored the town's treasures and is part of a collection of towers that fence the citadel. The tower stands near other notable structures like The House of Vlad Dracula and The Venetian House.
The Clock Tower is a very impressive structure of Sighișoara. Highly worth get there (it’s not that hard) and take a nice and easy tour. You can also climb to the Tower (we didn’t). While we were visiting, they had already prepare for Halloween, and it was so beautiful.

There's a small museum scattered through each level of the tower as you make your way to top the panoramic viewing platform. The platform gives you an unimpeded 360° view of the city. There's not a lot other than that. As well as the fact that nothing is translated through the museum, making it much harder to take an interest in the few items available for viewing. Despite what the signs say, the cost is 20lei to enter. I was in and out in less than 30 min.

Student tickets for 5 lei is incredibly cheap, and the view was beautiful! Really neat seeing the clock mechanism and some historical artifacts on the way up. It got a bit tight in some places going up as people were also descending the same stairs, just watch your step.

The fortress is surrounded by a moat lined with willow trees and features the impressive 14th-century Red Tower with its formidable 3-meter-thick walls.
Very cool citadel and fortifications. The expo shows a lot but not overwhelmingly so. You can see old furniture, costumes, jewellery, weapons, books and pottery. The walk on the walls of the fortification offers a magnificent view. The throne room is very cool with wooden matching furniture sets. I recommend it.

A great fortress. Freshly renovated. A bit too 'clean' for my liking. However, it was overall very informative and fun to explore. The museum is full of Large expansive spaces filled with trinkets of bygone times, and the wall offer great views of the expanding surroundings. Well worth a visit

Very well restored. A huge construction that has a lot to offer: interesting rooms to visid inside, a lot to see like furniture and varous artefacts. You have acces to most of the fortress and the experience is rich overall.

Făgăraș Fortress impressed me with its massive walls and peaceful atmosphere. Walking through its courtyards felt like stepping back in time, and the reflections in the surrounding moat made the place even more charming.

Beautifully restored marvellous fortress, belonged to various Princess and Princesses of Transylvania. No crowds, plenty of air, not being hot turistic spot. Museum with authentic artifacts, but also a floor with replica of throne room for pictures. Swans swiming in the perimetral canal, various temporary exhibitions. Totally recommend to visit.

The only Castle surrounded by water (as a way to defence). You have enough parking space round around. The entrance is on the right (not where google shows it). You can see swans (adults and baby). Inside the castle they reorganized a room (Sala Tronului - Throne room) with furniture where you can sit and take tons of pictures🥰 Recommandation: go around noon, inside the castle is cooold and great and no so much tourists, so you can enjoy it.

Stopped in on a Friday afternoon in late September. Incredible value for the price. Huge fortress with tons to look at. Lots of displays inside the museum areas. Very well maintained. You cant skip it for the price.

Evanghelic C.A. Fortified Church Viscri

Mentioned on

Church
Sights & Landmarks
The Evanghelic Church of C.A. Fortified Church Viscri is a beautiful, restored and preserved fortified church from the 1100s with additions made in later centuries. It is a real piece of timeless history and an important tourist destination in Transylvania. The village of Viscri is surrounded by walls and towers dating back to at least the 15th century, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside six other fortified churches in Transylvania.
There's no other way to get to the site than by a vehicle. There's a free parking lot a few hundred meters away from the entrance. You can get to the Church from there either by walking through the village or using the forest path behind the parking lot (shorter way). Church Viscri is a great example to understand the history of this area and how people had to transform temples into fortresses to guard themselves. However, within the last couple of years, the nearby village transformed into great infrastructure to accommodate tourists - b&bs, coffee shops, restaurant - and all of these places created with good taste and respectful of the surroundings. Make sure to at least stroll around to appreciate their work.
Tomasz X — Google review
Beautiful place, it definitely deserves a visit if you're in the area. You can go up the stairs for a great view of the surroundings. I'd also like to share that this is not a place for people who are too lazy to walk 1 km from the parking lot to this church. It's also not a place for people who don't understand that this is a church from the XIII century that should be preserved as is. I'm honestly baffled by the negative reviews because some people are unable to understand that we should keep these UNESCO sites as close to what they originally looked like as possible. It's part of their charm.
Mirela M — Google review
If the GPS takes you to the dead end road off the main street with a large parking lot on your left and a horse farm in front of you with pointers showing the direction to the church (15 minutes on foot) drive anther half kilometer on the main street and you will see a conventional brown sign pointing to the the Biserica. Street parking is available. Viscri Fortified Church is a UNESCO site and is the best of the UNESCO fortified churches. Not only it's an impressive edifice and fortification it's very well maintained which is rarely the case with Transylvania fortified churches. A nice lady selling the tickets would give you a brief overview. And you can get to almost every corner of the church including the bell tower and bastions.

The Evangelic fortified church in Viscri is amazing. In My opinion it is truly the main attraction of Viscri village. The fortification is wert well maintained and the church also beautiful. They kept the charm and bine of the old days surely. It is truly a nice stop that will take you back in time. Strongly recommend for anyone who visit Viscri.

This exceptionally well-preserved and restored site offers a vivid portrayal of its historical essence. The tranquil and serene ambiance of the village provides a truly immersive journey into the past, leaving visitors with a profound sense of relaxation upon their departure. It is unequivocally a destination worthy of your visit.

One of the best‑preserved fortified churches in Transylvania (built c.13–14th century) and part of UNESCO heritage. The village itself hasn’t changed much in nearly 200 years, which makes the whole area feel truly special. Plan for 2.5–3 hours: explore the fortification walls, preserved chambers with old household tools, the beautiful small church, climb the tower for 360° panoramic views, and don’t miss the Transylvanian terracotta tiles exhibition. The entrance fees was just under €5. Easily one of the top 3 sights to see in Transylvania.
Anda N — Google review
To me, this was the best expeprience of all castles and forts in Romania. You can go to every corner of the place, imagine yourself on the top of the tower, noticing an enemy far far away, holding a bow...price is low and it is not crowded. Great

Rupea Citadel

Mentioned on
1 list
Fortress
Sights & Landmarks
Rupea Citadel is a hilltop fortress in Transylvania, Romania. It was built by Transylvanian Saxons in the 15th century for protection against Ottoman invasions. The fortress is now a popular tourist destination, with restored rooms and towers, courtyards and some events.
A place where history breathes and silence speaks — suspended between sky and stone. Rupea Citadel is one of those rare gems that makes you stop and feel. From the moment you begin the climb toward its ancient walls, you’re stepping into a story written centuries ago — a place where time paused, but the soul of the land still whispers. The fortress is beautifully restored, and the panoramic view from the top is breathtaking. You can see the rolling hills of Transylvania stretch out in every direction — a reminder of just how stunning Romania truly is. What I loved most is the freedom to explore every corner without modern barriers. Towers, inner courtyards, massive stone walls — everything feels authentic. The informative panels are subtle but well-written, offering just enough historical context without overwhelming the experience. Whether you're a photographer, a history lover, or simply someone looking for peace away from the rush of the world, this place delivers. 🎟️ Ticket prices are fair, parking is close, and the road access is good. 💡 Tip: Visit in the early morning or at sunset — the lighting transforms the citadel into something out of a painting. Huge respect to those maintaining this site with such care. It’s a model for how we can honor and preserve cultural heritage. 📍 A must-visit stop if you’re traveling through Transylvania — between Brașov and Sighișoara, or just in search of something that stirs your spirit.
Dani V — Google review
Rupea Citadel in Transylvania is worth the climb for its panoramic views. A guide adds important context, as the ruins alone don’t tell the full story. Entry costs about 15 RON, and parking is available at the base. Some areas could use better upkeep, but the fortress still feels impressive. The top walls make a great photo spot.
Noel M — Google review
I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed. This fortress could be absolutely stunning, but unfortunately it’s not really treated as a proper tourist attraction. There’s very little information available, the rooms are completely empty, and the screens that once showed details don’t work and are quite dirty. Even the view from inside is hard to enjoy because the windows are so dusty. Despite all that, the place itself is visually impressive and beautiful — it’s just sad to see it not being properly cared for. 🥲🏰
Anita-Edina S — Google review
Nice views from the castle, however, they could display more interesting information or exhibitions to make the visit more meaningful; such as some decorations in the chapel or paintings related to the history of the castle, the fortress, the Saxons, or the battles of that time. It’s not too touristic, but it was still quite busy because there were some school groups. Overall, it’s worth a visit for the views, though the exhibition part could be improved.
NANA D — Google review
An old fortress, simple but with a wonderful landscape. Although it is about walls full of history, you live the moment of hundreds of years of history. Affordable prices, there is even a coffee shop and a souvenir shop. Worth visited .
Ciprian M — Google review
A very interesting 13th century medieval fortress, unfortunately not so well advertised and known like some others. The fortress is situated on a cliff overlooking the town of Rupea below. Since the terrain around is quite flat it can be seen from a far. The name of the fortress is coming from the Roman word of rupes, meaning "rock" or "stone". It was part of a fortification belt for defending the commercial are and the roads leading to it. The entrance costs only 15 lei, which is already quite cheap. Worth visiting.

Popular salt mine known for therapeutic cures for respiratory infections & chapel carved from salt.
Great for visiting and for health benefits this experience For kids and adults appropriate Lots of activities inside the mine You have to go down a few hundred stairs from the bus drop off to the mine Bus is available on the hour and half past . Tickets available from bus station Can pay cash or credit card
Billy B — Google review
Actually I think is a great place for kids, they have many activities for them, for adult not much to do, only walk around and go the church is there it's a mass. The line to buy a coffee was quite long and slowly, my daughter enjoyed playing some games. Obviously she had a lot of fun, entry was 50 Ron per adult 30 Ron per kid.
Minoska F — Google review
I love that there's so much to do underground in a salt mine!! We left Brasov at 9am, arrived about 11.30am. The main car park was full so we found another, 20 lei for the duration. Pay in advance but we agreed to pay on return as had no cash on us. We went to the ticket office and bought tickets. The toilets here were clean in case you needed them after a long drive. You then go on the bus to go down the mine. They cram the bus. The drive is 5 minutes odd. They drop you off and you go down further steps. You then enter the old salt mine. Inside there is so much - activity frames (go ape style), ping pong, arcades, swings, see saw for young kids, a coffee shop, souvenir shops, toilets, first aid and information kiosk. There were lots of people there but it didn't feel overwhelming. You can pay by card. We spent approximately 2.5 hours there. It was fun. Website isn't great, we thought the salt pools were there, but they're in another part of Praid.
Ayala S — Google review
The location is a great place to visit at least once. Now, there are some good things, but also things that are not so great. Good: There is a great place for climbing. There is a variety of tracks with different difficulty levels. There are places where you can play ping pong. Many swings for kids or families. A place with grains of salt instead of sand for kids to play. There are also some slides for kids Some places for souvenirs and some places to eat. The bad: There is a playground for kids with jettons. We tried to use an air hockey but it was a mess, the puck was not gliding as it was severely damaged and the table qas not pushing air through it's holes strong enough for it to glide, so it was a waisted time and money. Apart from this, you need to pay only with cash, and the only place that will take credit cards didn't work (last year, it had the same issue). I wonder why :-). They don't try to improve things. I've been here every year for the last 4-5 years, and each time, I like it less and less. When we were exiting the salt mine, we were always giving us a treat - usually Kürtőskalács. In these 4-5 years, the prices trippled, but we can't say the same thing about the prices, inflation, or fuel price. Also, the taste is not nearly as good as the ones from the Red Lake. So I would say expensive and below expectation. It's hard to find a place to park your car and is as expensive as in Bucharest, which again doesn't justify high prices. There's a ton of parking signs, but nobody will give you a receipt for overpriced parking. Again, wonder why? 25 lei for parking is a bit too much. If you are lucky, you can find a place at the main parking place with 5 lei per hour, though, again, it is still not a fair price. I'll probably have to skip this place next year. Nevertheless, if you haven't been here before, then go. Otherwise, I would reconsider. It could be one of the best salt mines in the country (probably it is the largest one), but without the right management, it will die soon, as probably the entire village, as probably tourism is their main source of income.
Palade M — Google review
The view from the observation post is spectacular! You can also find here a church, a restaurant, a small exhibit presenting the history of the salt mine and lots of fun places for children (adventure park, planetarium, swings, etc). There are also a lot of sitting areas to enjoy a cup of coffee and admire nature's underground beauty.

30 lei / adult Be ready for a crazy ride with the bus inside the mountain! 🙈 Very nice place to relax and spend some time far away from the outer world. The most surprising thing was that you have 3G phone signal inside!!!
Ninjandy — Google review
The longest salt mine I have ever been! The bus took us from the ticket station ( price for adults is 50 lei) and drove around 2-3 minutes! The mine is perfect for people who have allergies( you can feel the air difference+the humidity which is 60% usually). Inside you can find a lot of recreational places, a church!!, restaurants, and swings! Worth a visit if you are nearby (or even far away!)
Gabriela — Google review
It is ok for a walk around it and a coffee at the bar, but not many things to do as an adult, except for the adventure park. As a kid there are plenty of activities.

Lake St Ann

Bodies of Water
Nestled in the Ciomatu Mountains, Lake St Ann, also known as Sfanta Ana, is a stunning high-altitude lake located within a volcanic crater. It is renowned for being the only intact volcanic lake in Europe and boasts remarkably pure water. Surrounded by thick forests and offering picturesque views, the area provides a peaceful retreat close to Brasov. Visitors can take a leisurely walk through the trees to reach the pristine and calm lake or opt for activities such as boating.
Beautiful lake. You can go from the parking to the lake through the forest (paths are laid) or along the asphalt road. The walk around the lake takes half an hour. You can also rent a boat. The area is clean, there is a cafe and a toilet.
M K — Google review
The lake and path leading to it are great, we go quite often as we leave close by, however, the administration seems to get quite greedy with the prices of parking - 50 lei now for 3 hours, not even the entire day. Entrance per person is 40 lei. I would be ok paying this provided that the place is nicely taken care of, but the bathrooms are a mess, we went there in the weekend, traffic is expected, and in the course of 3 hours between going down the lake and back up nobody has cleaned there or even put toilet paper.

This is an absolute gem close to Braşov. Only an hours drive from the city this stunning lake is picture perfect. You park on the top and walk down through the trees. The walk itself is so pretty takes about 20 minutes. The lake is pristine and calm. You can walk around the lake. We choose to just relax on the benches next to it. In terms of activities there is boating available but we didn’t do it. The walk back is uphill and can be challenging if you have mobility issues. Please avoid the cafe at the top near the parking. It’s very expensive and the service is terrible !

Lake St. Ann is one of Romania’s most enchanting natural wonders – the only volcanic lake in Eastern Europe, surrounded by pristine forests and fresh mountain air. Its crystal-clear waters and serene atmosphere make it a perfect escape for nature lovers. Visitors can even rent a boat and enjoy a peaceful ride across the lake, adding to the magical experience of this unique destination.

There are 2 routes, from the parking lot down to the lake: one is on the main, paved road. The other is through the woods, on a designated route. Also, around the lake you can take a hike, it is possible.
George A — Google review
This is my first time visiting here. The view is very beautiful. But I'm disappointed with the parking fee, it's too expensive.I was only interested in less than 2 hours and paid 50 RON for parking.
หม่ามี๊& แ — Google review
The place is amazing. The drive there is stunning, the winding roads between the tree's are fantastic and the quality of the road is also good. Until you reach the lake you can make a few stops along the way, you can have watter from a few natural springs. The parking for the first 3 hours is 40 lei which is about 8.15 euro. There are 2 ways to go to the lake. One is on the car road and the other one is starting right at the first left tun on the car road and it takes you straight through the forest. You have 1 nice view point from the forest that you can see a part of the lake and finally you will reach the lake and have a wooden pathway which is nice for pictures. Taking a right you have a path that will take you around the lake right next to the edge of it. Also you may have a wistle with you because the area is known to be passed by bears. Enjoy your walk inside the middle of the nature and keep your eyes open and you will be safe. Please do no litter and if possible if you have a bag with you or if you have your hands free please pick up as much garbage as you can. Thank you for keeping everything as you found it.

Lake Saint Ana in Romania is a true gem! This natural wonder left me in awe with its pristine beauty and tranquil surroundings. The emerald waters nestled within the ancient volcanic crater create a breathtaking sight. Hiking around the lake offers stunning vistas of the lush forests, and the serene atmosphere is perfect for relaxation. The well-maintained trails make exploration a delight, and the informative signage adds to the experience. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a photographer, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Lake Saint Ana is a must-visit destination. Its untouched charm and soothing ambiance easily earn it a five-star rating in my book.

Red Lake, Romania's largest mountain lake, offers summer boating and nearby hiking in a picturesque forest setting. Meanwhile, Salina Turda is not just a halotherapy center but also an underground marvel with a rich history of salt mining. The 200-year-old natural lake may dry up by the end of the century, with dead tree trunks in its waters revealing its rapid formation. Visitors can take a leisurely walk around the lake or rent rowboats during the summer.
Amazing landscapes. The hiking route around the lake presents plenty opportunities to take nice pictures and just enjoy the nature.

Very crowded both at the lake area and the gorge. Would highly recommend a walk around the lake. Parking is a bit of a challenge if you want free....get there early or late afternoon. There is paid Parking. I wish people would carry their trash out instead of throwing it into the lake. 😡

We walked around the lake, and the whole circular route was littered. It was pretty disgusting. We paid 15 Lei for parking, so I don't understand why there aren't park rangers clearing this mess up and maintaining the area for wildlife. I even saw a soiled nappy at one point. Very disappointing because the surrounding area is beautiful, but it's just another place ruined by lazy, uneducated people.

Amazing views, and definitely worth visiting the Red Lake. There’s public parking available, and you can pay for it by card. The pony rides are great fun for small kids. The boat rides, however, only accept cash, which isn’t ideal—but still a nice experience if you come prepared.

"Voroneț" Monastery

Monastery
Sights & Landmarks
Voroneț Monastery, founded in the 15th century by Stephen the Great, is renowned for its vibrant painted walls. Often referred to as the Sistine Chapel of the East, this stunning place of worship is adorned with intense blue frescoes known as Blue Voronet. The exact method of achieving this hue remains a mystery. Despite some exterior paintings being faded, the monastery's historical significance and positive energy make it a must-see destination in Bucovina.
Wonderful! One can hardly find the proper words to quantify the beauty of this monastery! Rightfully called “The Romanian Sistine Chapel” for the Last Judgment outside fresco, this 535+ year old monastery is one you must not miss, if passing by in Bucovina.
Marius T — Google review
I highly recommend visiting it, along with the Bucovina region, Suceava and surroundings. It a small but very beautiful monastery, very well taken care of. Was founded by Stephen the Great in 1488 after a victorious fight against the Ottomans. Its marvelous paintings got the monastery nicknamed the "Sistine chapel of the East"
Allen D — Google review
A beautiful monastery - definitely a must see for anyone in the area. Parking is 5Lei per hour but you can also park for free on the side of the road as you continue along the street past the monastery. You can buy souvenirs and snacks on site near the monastery.
Monika K — Google review
They’ve commercialized the soul out of this place. You’re forced to pay to park and then you walk on an alley filled with merchandise to get to it. They blocked the streets that allow you to get to the monastery without buying all the necessary things that they are selling there. At the gate, they force you to pay 10 Ron to enter based on the fact that it’s a UNESCO site. The tickets are bought inside a small store that becomes a zoo during the weekend. Nuns are focused on selling a lot of merchandise as if they are paid a commission. It ruins the whole experience and so totally not worth it. Especially since this whole experience wasn’t the same as early as 2-3 years ago. The church is beautiful with great paintings but I would never do it again. There are so many other beautiful places to visit in the area that don’t come with this experience focused on profits over faith.
Diana D — Google review
A must visit if you’re in Suceava. I visited 4 monasteries and this was my favorite. The place is well kept with lots of flowers (roses)surrounding the area. In 1488, Stephen the Great built this medieval monastery. There are stunning colourful frescoes both inside and outside the monastery. The west facade depicts the Last Judgement.

Truly beautiful monastery! although it is a 5 lei fee for students/children and 10 lei for adults, it is totally worth it to see the monastery. It is well taken care of, and truly a beautiful display of the Christian Orthodox religeon. Near the monastery you also have many shops, and places to eat!! Neamț Citadel is a 14th-century fortress with a renovated interior that showcases educational displays and period artifacts. It's an iconic destination in Suceava, offering visitors the chance to delve into Romania's history and culture. The citadel provides panoramic views from its grounds, although reaching it involves a fairly steep walk on tarmac. The site also features souvenir shops and stores where you can learn more about the region's history.
Great place to visit. I really liked this fortress. And also beautiful view from top. Lots of history can be felt when u inside . There quite few exponents that you can have look from very close . Way uphill is bit challenging but is worth it !!

Went first thing in the morning and within minutes there were literally hundreds of school kids enjoying their history. Castle itself is gorgeous but the inside leaves a lot to be desired. Almost none of the extensive boards of information are in anything other than Romanian and the exhibits are all reproductions and a tad hokey at best. Still worth a visit though. A word of caution if you wish to drive up there. The road is very narrow and cars cannot pass each other, which could lead to a very tricky situation with someone having to back up a long way so I would advise walking the few hundred yards.

Arena Mall

Shopping mall
Shopping
Retailers, restaurants & a cinema round out the offerings at this 3-story indoor shopping center.
You don't need to be rich to window shop for things you need or just wanna get to have and use later. Very well maintained, security in every store and mall area. Pleanty of things to do for all ages from 1 to 101. Climate controlled and plenty of free parking.

The place is cleaned multiple times throughout the day, has good food and has enough space to not make you feel trapped.

Was there on Saturday. Food court is ok. You can even find a free table 😀 Toilets are clean. Parking is big.

A good mall with a variety of clothing options, from Zara, HM, Pull&Bear. There are many food options as the food court is pretty big. There are plenty choices for those who love shawarma and fast food. There is a Pizza Hut for pizza lovers. Too bad the toilet is located only at the ground floor so you have to take the lift or descend the stairs if you are at the food court. Another bad thing about the toilet is even though it was pretty new it was very dirty. I went twice in 2 hours and nothing changed. It wasn’t even the rush hour or the weekend. So they could improve in that area.

Great shopping experience but there aren’t many stuff to find or do. The constructions are not loud and i’m very eager to see what stores they will open in the future!

The new parking lot is horrible, very tight so you find the car scratched by other drivers. Avoid this place. The old parking is closed due the mall extension

Great place to catch a cup of coffee and a slice of cake.

Little commercial centre. Little if you compared with an European one, but big one on this area. You can find all type of European commercial centre comfort but smaller. I liked the cinema they have. On my opinion it’s pretty. The center have a toilet and a lot of Roumanian fast food and restaurants. Doesn’t suggested to visit during a Covid-19 for small corridor they have and for people who doesn’t respect safe distance o for those who doesn’t Ware a mask (they’re a lot). 4 stars just for covid safe guard, cause they doesn’t check body temperature as well. For shopping and anything else, a really nice place. I have just a single picture of the cinema. Anyway, enjoy shopping :)
