Enna Cathedral, also known as Sicily's belvedere, is situated in the highest province capital in Italy. The ancient city offers breathtaking panoramas of the Sicilian countryside and exudes an enchanting atmosphere that reflects its rich history influenced by various cultures and dominations.
Enna cathedral is a beautiful church in an equally beautiful town. The church covers a number of different eras from the 14th to the 17th century. It has a wonderful wooden roof and lavish decoration inside. It's definitely worth a visit.

Really beautiful catherdral in Enna. We did not expect it here when we went to visit as other places are beautiful. Some event happening soon too, and some icecream next door.
TheKaKaNow Y — Google review
This is a great find well worth a couple hours travel. We were passing by while travelling to the Temple Valley from Catania and did that 1 hour stop in Enna to take a look at this historical place. It is absolutely magnificent and very well decorated. You can feel both the historical character and the the cultural spirit of the place. Just take a look at the photos... and multiply the feel by 10!
Eugen P — Google review
Built in the 13th century, this exemple of medieval architecture is throwing with its majestic bell facade on Piazza Duomo, surrounded by the other 18th century architecture and overlooks the north side of Piazza Mazzini. The three chapels that open into the transept deserve particular attention.

Beautiful Church and wonderful people! Can't speak highly enough about this place!

Perched atop a lush hill, the grand Lombardia Castle boasts panoramic vistas from its lofty spires. Also nearby is the Maniace fortress, blending into the sandy shores and glistening waters. A leisurely stroll or jog around the island's perimeter reveals Ortigia's diverse beaches and occasional pontoons dotted with sun loungers extending out into the sea.
On the way, we first got lost and ended up in very narrow streets. A local lady helped us find the right way. We arrived at the castle too early for our visit, as it was still closed. The exterior is very beautiful, and the town itself is charming and well-maintained. There’s also a great viewpoint where you can even see Mount Etna. We recommend a visit.
Nika K — Google review
Visited on a rainy day in September. Entry fee of €4 is reasonable, although there wasn’t much information and most of the castle was cordoned off. Climbed up the tower for a fascinating view of the city. Worth the visit.
Hossein R — Google review
Open now (April 2025) and a very nice walk about the restored inside and the gorgeous outside sidewalk! Really enjoyed it. Price was €6 per person I think.
Gabriella G — Google review
Didn't manage to enter the castle as we were late, but looks beautiful from the outside and has spectacular views all around.
Bernard C — Google review
Lovely walk around the castle and the views are amazing - we don’t go inside on this occasion as we spent most of the time exploring around about it. Well worth a visit just for the views and walk.
Dorothy G — Google review
This was a unplanned stop over driving from Syracusa to Palermo. And it was worth it . The castle history and structure was impressive. The view from the tower is the icing on the cake . Entry ticket of 4euro is worth it. Rocca di Cerere is just close by.

Castello di Sperlinga

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Nestled on the southern slopes of the Madonie and Nebrodi mountain ranges, Castello di Sperlinga is a captivating historical gem that dates back to the Norman era. This remarkable fortress, partially carved into rock, boasts multiple levels featuring stables, prisons, and forges where weapons were crafted. The troglodyte caves beneath the castle tell a fascinating story of habitation that lasted until the mid-1960s.
Great place to visit. The castle party in the rock. Do not forget to go downhill to sea small houses in the cave as well. The view of Etna as a bonus!
Milena R — Google review
Tickets have to be bought from the cafeteria near the parking lot before you start going up the ramp to the castle. It's really worth the visit! The steps up the turret are difficult but duable. The views are breathtaking from every part of the fortress.
Marika M — Google review
An amazing place, well worth going out of your way to get here. The photos can't really do it justice. Carved out of rock and used for many hundred (thousand?) years, the fortress really began to take shape in the Norman period. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes with a grip, as there are some steep sections. The climb to the top is worth it for the 360 degree view. Allow for at least an hour to get a good look around. And, yes, you have to buy your entrance ticket at the bat next door.
Stacy P — Google review
Very unique place with view on Etna. Not only the castle in the rock but also some houses (caves) in the town.
Maciej M — Google review
Small town, interesting castle ruin. You need to go to the littler bar at the piazza next to the castle to purchase your entry tickets. Really friendly people!
Imelda H — Google review
Beautiful place with wonderful views. More of a group of caves than a Castle although there is a turret on site. Could be better signposted as you’re going round. There was no mention of toilets out the back gate so assumed it would be a nice walk but just lead to the loos. Definitely wear sensible shoes and the climb to the turret is uneven. Tickets must be purchased in the nearby bar.
Gina M — Google review
This was truly an amazing Castello that represents an Era of that time and true to what a Castello would be for the people of that community. The narrow steps to the top of the Castello made me look and see how well they have been used through time. At the top is an amazing "aqueduct" created for their wells and baths at the very top. It is a bit of a drive to Sperlinga but well worth it. The "bar" at the tops sells the entrance tickets and the owner is very kind and helpful. There is a museum under the Castello that has great pictures of the hard life in the past. Truly a unique gem of a "Castle/Castello" with posters telling you the history through out your walk through.
Nanners R — Google review
5 euros a ticket, but worth every cent! Make sure to get at the cafe/ bar just outside. What an incredible castle, very high with lots of history. Amazing views at the top.

Museo Archeologico Regionale di Gela is a must-visit attraction in the charming coastal town of Gela, Sicily. It stands out as one of the most important museums in southern Italy and the Mediterranean, alongside other renowned cities like Siracusa, Palermo, Agrigento, and Catania. The museum boasts an impressive collection of archaeological finds from various periods spanning prehistory to the Middle Ages.
There are some remarkable exhibitions in this small but lovely museum
Leslie S — Google review
Only half of the exhibition is visible .The rest is because of damage by rainwater or construction work for visitors not reachable. A lttle bit disapointing for visitors.
Peter B — Google review
Greek civilization artefacts in very good condition. The island was a Greek colony. I’m not giving 5 stars for the lack of english language and lack of an english guide tour. No AC. Crazy hit in the summer. Maybe it’s just temporary.
Bogdan — Google review
More than expected, the archeological museum showcases a good collection of ancient objects. The terrace offers a good view of the Greek acropolis just beside.
C C — Google review
The whole place was set up for walking in a certain direction. Best part was the wing with all the coins. Two gentleman did not allow our group to see the column because one of the men had to unlock the gate but neither would. Our group was told to take photos from the balcony almost 100 yards from the item we came to see.
Sergeant M — Google review
Employees who really don't care , flickering lights that don't let you see the exhibits , an image of abandonment which the great treasures that are stored in do not deserve. Shame on the local authorities for not preserving their ancient heritage.
Spiros T — Google review
Regional Archaeological Museum of Gela can be considered together with Siracusa, Palermo, Agrigento, Catania among the most important in southern Italy and in the Mediterranean. There are contents, archaeological finds, inscriptions, coins, architectural elements and much more from various periods from prehistory to the Middle Ages. However, the collection of the classical and Greek era is impressive. Unmissable visit for tourists who want to discover Sicily and relive some of its most significant testimonies. Welcome, I recommend to visit the museum with a local guide. :)
EUGENIO M — Google review
one of the things to visit in Gela together with the Acropolis! the doric column left brings back all the idea of where the temple of demetra/ceres was before. Walking around the acropolis is very suggestive especially during events inside.

Villa Romana del Casale is a 4th-century AD residential villa and estate in Piazza Armerina, Sicily. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its extensive collection of Roman mosaics, covering 3535 square meters. Buried by a mudslide in the 12th century, the site was excavated starting in the 1950s.
An incredible location. The mosaic is absolutely stunning. There are literally hundreds of square meters of very well preserved mosaics and 99% can be visited. Tourists visit the villa on a suspended pathway that takes you all around the rooms. Follow the signs for the best experience, the people who organised the path have done very well.
Dan Ș — Google review
Absolutely worth a visit — one of the true highlights of my trip to Sicily. The site is easy to walk through and very well signposted, with plenty of information to help you appreciate its history. I read about the place beforehand, which I highly recommend unless you plan to rent an audio guide. As in other historic landmarks, you may find guides offering their services at the entrance. Most of the site is covered, making it comfortable to explore even on a hot, sunny day. A fascinating journey into Roman history that you shouldn’t miss.
Sergio O — Google review
A remarkable place, not to be missed. We read the warnings about tour groups getting in the way but had no problems arriving at about 10.30am when there were already ten tour buses in the car park. Everyone has to take the same narrow route on platforms above the mosaics. You can wait for others to move on or you can push your way ahead, but it is best just to "go with the flow". We completed our day with a visit to Caltagirone, interesting to see the ceramics everywhere around the town.
Steven M — Google review
Fantastic place with the most incredible collection of mosaics. If you don’t like mosaics or you’re not interested in Roman history it would be boring but for the quality and quantity of mosaics it is absolutely worth a visit. It was a long drive from Siracusa and quite long from Catania with some narrow roads but it was worth it in my view. Good parking on site and a decent enough sandwich at the shops near the car park.
AA B — Google review
Outstandingly well preserved, beautiful, intricate mosaics. The layout of the villa is fascinating, showing the lifestyle of a wealthy Roman. A really great place to visit in the early morning because it gets very crowded, very quickly.
Hilary P — Google review
I hadn't heard of this villa before, but I am very glad to have visited this gem 💎 as part of a day trip. From the outside I was not expecting much, but inside.. wow! Some of the most beautiful and well-preserved mosaics I've ever seen. As well as a great example of the ingenious Roman underfloor heating. Not very busy, and we walked around slowly but still managed to see it all within an hour - but I don't know if that was just down to it being a weekday. We also didn't need to book in advance. It is definitely worth a trip.
LA M — Google review
Magnificient! The amount of mosaics and the level of preservation is staggering. Nothing like it anywhere else and it blows my mind someone was able to enjoy it in all its glory in ancient times. Audio guide while not amazing does a good job explaining the mosaics. It takes 2 to 2.5h to leisurely go through the site with an audio guide. There is a shuttle (sado) that can take you here from the town.
Z — Google review
Many people said that this is a must do in Sicily and I have to agree. A lot of history and culture preserved and presented in such an interesting and meaningful way. Although we were lucky that we visited just before the peak hours and before large school groups arrived. The paths are so small that any slightly big amount of people would make the experience miserable. Plan carefully if you want to visit peacefully.

À beautiful mall in the middle of nowhere-a true hidden gem ! The place is wonderful. However when visited in the summer it could be REALLY HOT like up to 45 degrees Celsius!!! (July 20th) The prices are crazy and there is a diversity in the products.

Sicilia Outlet Village is a well-situated outdoor shopping center in the heart of Sicily, perfect for a stop on your way from Palermo or Cefalù to Catania. We visited on a weekday morning, and it was refreshingly uncrowded. With a wide range of stores, including high-end brands. The prices offer some savings, though they aren’t the deep discounts some might expect. There are also a few restaurants and cafes to relax in between shopping, and tax refunds are available through Global Blue. Overall, a convenient and enjoyable spot for a shopping break in Sicily!

Sicilia Outlet Village was a fantastic stop for us, providing a perfect opportunity to stretch our legs and do some great shopping between destinations. It's a large, well-organized center that makes for a pleasant break. Brand Selection: The village has an excellent array of international and designer brands. Our teenage daughter was especially happy, as many of her favorites were available, including Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, and Nike. There truly is something for everyone, making it a satisfying shopping destination. Atmosphere: The layout is pleasant and easy to navigate, making the walking around enjoyable even if you aren't shopping. It offers a good selection of dining and cafe options for a break. If you're looking to score some deals on major brands or just need a quality pit stop during a long drive across Sicily, this outlet village is a recommended choice.

Very nice place to visit. Has a children's playground that's in the shade. Has multiple stores of A brands and a big chunk of A+ brands. It's cheaper, not stupendously cheap. Parking is a breeze and if you have kids, you can park your car under a canopy. The place is very clean and when I visited, it was 35c, they had these poles that atomized water, my kids loved it and it cooled them down as well. It was one of the biggest outlet village's I've ever visited.

The Staircase of Santa María del Monte, also known as Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte, is a renowned urban stairway in Caltagirone, Italy. Built in the 1600s and adorned with vibrant ceramic tiles in the 1950s, it has become an iconic landmark. The staircase consists of 142 steps, each covered with hand-painted tiles that create a stunning chromatic effect.
A beautiful place to explore in the small town of Caltagirone. The tile work at bottom show ancient historical contexts while the view at top of the stairs is breathtaking.

We actually planned our visit to coincide with the St. James Festival as part of our Youth Jubilee program. Being right at the front row for the St. James procession was something I’ll never forget. The energy, the devotion, the scene, it was really something special. The area was packed with people, both locals and tourists, all celebrating together. Shops stayed open late and there was this beautiful sense of unity. Honestly, I just feel incredibly blessed to have been part of it. It was one of those rare, meaningful moments where everything comes together.
Erthania W — Google review
This is in Caltagirone. The famous Scalinata. It is thrilling to watch. Every step is decorated with ceramics. It was quiet in early July. On the 25th July it is decorated with lanterns for the feast.
Carmelina C — Google review
Beautiful, historic area. Challenging climb ,best to enjoy the ceramics and pace yourself

The Staircase of Santa María del Monte in Caltagirone is a breathtaking cascade of 142 steps, each decorated with hand-painted ceramic tiles that narrate Sicily’s artistic and cultural heritage from the 10th to the 20th century. Walking up feels like ascending through layers of history, where every riser is a window into the island’s soul. The staircase is not just an architectural masterpiece but a living symbol of Caltagirone’s centuries-old ceramics tradition. Unfortunately, we visited on a Sunday, when nearly all the artisan workshops and shops were closed, leaving us without the chance to experience the vibrant craftsmanship that usually brings the staircase to life

In the charming Baroque town, visitors can explore churches and browse through numerous ceramics shops. A must-see is the Museo Regionale della Ceramica, which was established in 1965 and houses around 2500 Sicilian ceramic artifacts dating back to prehistoric times. The museum offers a multimedia educational experience with six sections to explore. Additionally, there are elaborate ceramic pieces on display and a nearby public park adorned with diverse vases.
Worth the 4€ admission. Some of the pottery dates back to the 6th century BC, but they also have some fine 17th-19th century pieces, too. Not much is in any language other than Italian, which is fine. Helpful staff. It appears that they may be suffering from some structural issues, which is keeping part of the exhibit from being accessible. The building is in pretty bad shape.
Stacy P — Google review
These people need an actual museum professional to run this place. Some amazing stuff but no descriptions on a majority of items. No history really and no details. Everything in Italian only. Not *nearly* as much stuff as you would expect. Very little really. I'd say it's not worth the 5 euros, but let the buyer be 'ware.
Amy L — Google review
No information about closing museum but the doors were shut down
Tomasz K — Google review
I felt like the exposition could be much more! Feels like the best pieces are not on display. The structure needs immediate attention, parts look like they have serious structural damages! Ladies at the biglietteria were extra nice, complimenti! The price of 4€ is reasonable.
Zeljko V — Google review
Pretty shabby museum. Don’t go in with high expectations. The signs are in Italian only, so might be better for those who read Italian?
Kimberly D — Google review
This museum is in an old theatre and is a bit unloved. It's old fashioned with a confusing layout, but looks like it's being slowly renovated. Some fabulous exhibits of ceramics through the ages in Sicily (could be labelled better though). Well worth a visit and a must for ceramic lovers. Only €4 entry.
Shirley S — Google review
Visited with a group of nine. Could not change 50 euros for first person. We could make the 8 euros entrance for 2 with small change but apparently this is not legal tender in Italy because it was refused and virtually thrown back at us. So none of us went in! Very rude and poor for tourism.
Beverley C — Google review
Found some interesting and very elaborate ceramic artefacts in the museum. The nearby public park surrounded by hundreds of different vases, one different from the other, was intriguing. Catch the little train in the main square and make the 20 minute ride through the narrow streets. Some amazing elaborate buildings. And plenty of shops to buy this very unique ceramics artwork.

The Duomo di San Giorgio, a baroque Catholic church completed in 1775, is a masterpiece adorned with sculptures and paintings by renowned artists. The cathedral's elongated shape dominates the piazza and features an impressive facade characterized by three orders, including a central tower enclosing the bell tower and terminating with an onion spire.
This is a large and beautiful church. A really cool city and area to explore.

Superb monument. Looks great from all nearby streets. Wonderful backdrop to the town of Ibla. Do yourself a favour and go visit this church even if to only stick your head inside for a few minutes.

Beautiful church that leaves a lasting impression on you. It looks out over a square which is also a great place to hang for a while. There weren’t many people around so it was very pleasant.

Ornate The Duomo di San Giorgio in Ragusa is a stunning example of Sicilian Baroque architecture, perched at the top of a dramatic flight of stairs. Entry is free, making it a must-visit landmark. The ornate façade and peaceful interior offer a memorable cultural and spiritual experience, with beautiful frescoes and intricate details. A true highlight of Ragusa!
Onbarefeet — Google review
A truly imposing church in Ragusa. It can be seen from the lower side of the square and gives you a sense of superiority. I visited it during Holy Week and also attended the rehearsals for the church organ. It is worth seeing. The place does not have a ticket.

A very calm and beautiful spot for a short walk with enough shadow to hide from the sun. We really enjoyed the afternoon here with nice food from around the corner.

Beautiful and well maintained garden featuring a small playground for children. It makes a good starting point for your exploration of the historical part of Ragusa, especially if you park your car at the adjacent paid parking area. Definitely worth the visit.

A lovely garden with amazing views of the valley below . You will find washrooms on the site . A good array of flowers but it depends on the time of year you visit . The site is well maintained and a great place for kids to play in the playground. Take a break and relax .

To go place when visiting Ragusa. You can park on nearby parking places. Be sure to pay the parking as there is lady comming regularly checking license numbers for valid ticket. You can see the whole park and go by walk to old city which is just next to it. Lot of cafeteria and restaurant and shops. This is the nicest park of Ragusa.

Let's start from the premise that I do not like doing these sort of activities - hence saying that I enjoyed it is no overstatement but rather a confirmation of how much fun one can have at this park. It's very well organised, very well kept and safe also. One thing However - the person who explained how things work should dedicate more time to novices like me rather than a brief 2 minutes and a good luck. Hence my only advice would be - please prepare rookies better

Excellent, a lot of fun and adrenaline. Very well maintained and organized, plenty of friendly helpful staff, and even pizza and grilled local salsiccia and veggies. Ideal place for a family with kids, there are attractions for the youngest (3 to 7 yo), the rest is for the brave who dare

We arrived and Etna was covered in cloud and the cable cars weren’t running. Angelo and his team were incredible. They made, what could have been a disappointing day, an experience of a lifetime. We rode in the buggy across the volcanic rock pathways and his knowledge about how Etna behaves and the story of the lava flow over centuries was awesome! Thank you team- in particular Angelo- I shall fondly wear my pink snood with pride!!

Had great time on quads! With Salvatore guide I felt safe all the times, even going through challenging parts. The tour took even longer than expected and guides were very dedicated.
Monika S — Google review
What a fantastic trekking tour with a brilliant guide (slightly 🤪crazy 🌋 🐐) You meet at the hut, collect a helmet, snack and drinks and if required a jacket, walking boots and socks. (All included in the price) They then carefully explain where you are going and what you are undertaking. Then you are escorted to the cable car to 2500m once there you commence a 3-3.5hr hike around various craters, fissures in an amazing landscape. Not too strenuous but you can definitely feel the effects of the altitude when ascending. Tiziana expertly guided us and imparted her detailed knowledge of the volcano with great joy and happiness. Loved the trip, we had a fabulous friendly group from over seven different countries. Highly recommend trip up Etna

Highly recommend visiting Etna with them ! Great people who speak English French and Italian. They are very nice and explain a lot about the environment and what has happened over the years. They lend you a jacket, shoes and socks so you are safe and confortable. They told me that we would maybe see lava if lucky, I got very excited and when they saw it they came to get me straight away for me to see. Recommend 100%

We booked this hoping for a really nice view and a bit of a thrill on some quads. My boyfriend is a big dirt biker back home so we thought this would be a great experience. This felt more like a four wheeler as transportation rather than thrilling fun. The one unexpected positive piece was that the pizza voucher we got ended up being one of the best pizzas we had while in Italy that’s at the restaurant meeting point.
Alexis H — Google review
Great tour, very exciting family buggy ride, very informative, very nice and funny guide. The guide spoke English and was very helpful and careful. Unfortunately we couldn't see everything. We didn't see any active part of the volcano either. We were offered a 2 hour tour but at that moment no family buggies were available (we were with 2 adults and a 4-year old). We had to wait for their return. As we had too little time before heading back to the mainland, we were offered a 1 hour alternative tour. The tour is not cheap. The price was not halved like the touring time. We got a quarter of the original price off. That is the only thing we didn't like. But it was worth the experience and view!
Naïra S — Google review
Not recommended — Euro Etna Tourism. We paid €200 for a quad tour, thinking we’d go up to see the craters of Etna. In reality, they just drove us down the mountain over rocks, with no views and nothing special to see. A waste of both time and money. If you want to experience real Etna, just take the Funivia dell’Etna cable car or walk around the free Silvestri Craters right next to the parking area — much better!

Centro Sicilia – Misterbianco (Catania area) We stopped here on our way to Taormina on the recommendation of our bus driver — and it turned out to be an excellent stop. Centro Sicilia is a large, modern shopping mall with a clean, airy design and a great variety of stores — from international favorites like Apple, Zara, Levi’s, and Hilfiger to popular Italian brands such as Kiko, Tezenis, and Piquadro. It’s spacious, bright, and easy to navigate, with wide corridors and plenty of seating. The food court offers lots of choices, from quick bites to coffee spots, making it perfect for a travel break. Ample free parking, good signage, and clean facilities add to the overall convenience. If you’re driving between Agrigento, Catania, or Taormina, this is an ideal place to pause, refresh, and pick up a few essentials. One of the best regional malls we’ve visited in Sicily: modern, comfortable, and worth the stop.

Centro Sicilia was the perfect pit stop immediately after landing at Catania (CTA). Being conveniently located right on the route, it offered everything a traveler needs before heading to their final accommodation. Practical Needs Met: We found the center to be modern, clean, and very spacious. Crucially, the public restrooms were well-maintained—a necessary first stop! We were able to stock up for our whole stay at the huge and well-organized Conad grocery store located inside. This store is a treasure trove for Local Guides looking for authentic Sicilian goods; we easily found excellent bottled water, drinks, and fantastic local products like high-quality pistachios. Shopping Highlights: For those looking for a quick shopping fix, the mall is large and has a great selection of international and Italian brands. My daughter especially enjoyed the nice Zara store and the very big Bershka, which both had large selections. The overall atmosphere is pleasant and welcoming. Highly recommended for travelers needing to break the journey, grab essentials, or just have a refreshing walk-around!

Here's one of the best place to visit and take your kids to for shopping. They had super great decorations for the Christmas. The place was so neat and beautiful. This place has a collection of different stores, ranging from boutique to restaurants, fast food, Mac Donald, Caffe, and name it. You can also play video games, it's so beautiful. But one has to be very careful, because of the covid cases and always have your mask on

Long, wide beach backed by pine forest & dunes, with clear waters & quiet sunset-watching spots.
Long stretch of sandy beach with small dunes. Plenty of free parking on the main road running alongside the beach. Just make sure you park on the side nearest the beach. There are bins at regular intervals, but still some rubbish on the beach. There are a few bar / cafes as well. The sea was warm on the day we came and you could see fish swimming around in the shallow waters. It is also lightly shelved so good for children. Highly recommend!
Adam S — Google review
Large open expanse on beach. Clean and the sea was beautiful. We are parked easily on the free car parking area and there was also plenty of space on the road side. There are showers as well. Take an umbrella and sunscreen as there is very little shade.
Camille M — Google review
Nice wide beach, but very few restaurants
Alex — Google review
Very empty. Free parking on cross streets and on the shoulder of the road. Free showers. You may have to walk over the dunes depending where you park but paths have been made were the showers are located. No shade, so bring your own. Water is very clean and they had raked the beach. The wind was high at 18 but we put ourselves against the dune and brought rope to stake our umbrella. We set up a distance from the lido and we're entertained by the sail boats and kite surfers. The lido plays loud music so keep this in mind for proximity. A lovely few hours of peace with our own umbrella, folding loungers and pareas and clothes pins to create more shade. Highly recommend this blue flag beach.! We saw many fish jumping out of the water. No trash containers so please pack out everything you bring in.
Moya D — Google review
There is almost nobody during this time of the year. Beach was not very clean, my kids have found 5cm piece of glass in the sand in water. In general the beaches are not clean in Sicily, at least not in this part. Parking was a bit difficult to find because there is no parking directly where the navigation leads. It is just a middle of the street with no option to enter the beach. Btw, I've found this particular beach as one of the top 7 beaches of Sicily.
Matej M — Google review
Beautiful public beach. Soft sand, sand dunes with greenery, and not too crowded. You have to park by the side of the road, but there are plenty of spaces later in the afternoon. There are no cafes or amenities, but that's a minor issue given everything else.

Necropolis of Pantalica

Nature & Parks
Necropolis of Pantalica is an ancient archaeological site located in the Iblei mountains near Sortino and Ferla in Sicily. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features around 5,000 burial chambers dating back to the 13th to 7th centuries BC.
This is a vast and extraordinary site. There are two main trails: one leading through the necropolis and another following the Anapo River. We only explored the necropolis path, as both routes are quite extensive. The views are stunning. You can get remarkably close to some of the tombs, and contemplating how ancient they are is truly mind-blowing. It’s hard to fathom how the ancient Iblei managed to carve these tombs so high up into the rock faces. Absolutely astonishing. Be aware that the trail isn’t particularly family- or kid-friendly. It’s long, rocky, with high steps, mostly without shade, and can get very hot during the summer. I’d categorize it as moderate to difficult. However, it’s absolutely worth it—you won’t find many sites from the Bronze Age that are this expansive and well-preserved.
Andrea O — Google review
The location is good and interesting, the scenery is great. But you have to figure out some things on your own. First, you can't go into the area by car anymore. At the entrance you have to leave the car (free parking, not too spacious), register your name with the ranger and take a free shuttle bus that keeps going up to the end of the road to the Necropolis North and then back to the entrance. They will pick you up on the way. So far so good. Wish someone had told me in this clarity because the map they give you is useless, but you can go either 1 km by the shuttle to the start of the walking trail and the walk a few km to the end point, or do it the other way round. From the end point you can go down the river and up the other side or simply go back. There are many signposts along the way. Unfortunately, there are no maps showing you exactly where you are. I saw some confusion along the trail. Just bring enough water when it's hot cause you walk a lot and going this and that direction adds up. As long as you end up on either end of the road, you're fine. And it's all free of charge. If organization and information was better, I would have give 5 stars. But it's Sicily after all.
Albert K — Google review
Quite the adventure finding the right paths, definitely recommend downloading Komoot to not get lost. Other than that absolutely beautiful, amazing experience, it really feels like a mystic place, has some Pandora vibes and the guys at the ranger station are extremely friendly.
Nick D — Google review
Lovely valley - great views - perfect escape into nature. I would be cautious when it's raining, the stone in the valley tends to be quite slippery. The official parking was on one side of the road just before the entrance, it was free. Bring enough water!!!
N R — Google review
Amazing walk around the valley with more than 3000 years of history. We did a tour of 6km, which took us almost two hours.
Martin B — Google review
Incredible place - very beautiful for a hike!!! A must visit for anyone who likes nature / adventure / hiking / history! Parking wise there was no car park but we just parked near the info point entrance having drive in from Sortino direction. Was easy enough to just park at side of road which goes to a dead end at the entrance. The chaps at the entrance info point were friendly and helpful.
Adam R — Google review
Hot in June/July but such a special experience. Worth going out of your way for if you’re a hiking and/or history buff.
Sarah H — Google review
If some moderate hiking and ancient history is your thing (and you have a car or bike), definitely make time for this place when near Syracusa. The scenery is stunning, the burial sites look like they were carved out of the rock yesterday, and you will have a cool place to splash around when you get down to the river. Entrance is free, you just have to register in the book. Bring water. Much of the hiking is exposed with only limited shade. Easily in my top 10 of outdoor things to do in Sicily.

Le Capannine is a trendy beach club located in the Playa area, offering tiki huts, sports facilities, and lively parties with DJs. It's part of the vibrant nightlife scene along the coast, particularly in the former industrial area of Le Ciminiere. The beach club features dark volcanic sands, umbrellas, and sunbeds for relaxation. Visitors can also enjoy coastal cafes and restaurants for refreshments.
This is the best beach in Catania. We went there almost everyday during our vacation. The staff are really nice and kind too. Looking forward to see you next year.

Nice beach. No dogs, almost no kids. Easy to book on spiagge app or website. The cost is 30€ for one umbrella and two sub beds. The distance between the umbrellas is pretty decent, which is good. No towels, no small table for drinks/food. The territory is very clean and neat. A lot of grass and trees.
Alexandra M — Google review
The beach is well organized, nice place - this is the reason for giving one more star. The fee of renting a sunbed is just discussing. 20€/ person. I understand that the owner has got to pay the bills and stuff, however a sunbed cost a max of 25 € at decathlon. The place is very nice, unfortunately this was the first and last time here. It is a shame that people would like to come here and enjoy the see, holiday etc. and there is always something that just feels you have been robbed.

Perfect! Nice beach, nice restaurant, nice bar, nice WC and showers facilities, nice view to Etna! Super close by to Catania, you can either reach it by public buses or by Uber. Price wise is good for the facilities and the ambient, is a great place to recharge and relax.

Parco Fluviale dell'Alcantara

Mentioned on

National reserve
Nature & Parks
Parco Fluviale dell'Alcantara is a national park known for its rushing river, waterfalls, gorges, volcanic rocks, and small beach areas. The park offers an easy trail suitable for leisurely walks without the need for climbing. While it can get crowded in August, there are unofficial entry points with lower fees. Visitors can walk along the river for a long time but should be cautious as some areas can be dangerous without proper gear or guided tours.
Parco Fluviale dell’Alcantara is a natural wonder in Sicily and an absolute must for nature lovers. The highlight is the Alcantara Gorge, with its dramatic basalt rock walls shaped by ancient volcanic activity and the crystal-clear river flowing through. The contrast of the dark stone and the turquoise water is breathtaking. With the entrance ticket, you can access well-maintained walking paths, viewpoints, and stairs leading down to the riverbank. In summer, the water is refreshingly cold – perfect for cooling off on a hot day. There are also guided tours and body rafting experiences for the more adventurous, as well as an elevator for easier access to the gorge. It’s a unique mix of geology, adventure, and relaxation. Wear water shoes if you plan to go into the river, as the stones can be slippery. A visit here offers both spectacular scenery and a memorable outdoor experience in the heart of Sicily. The only negative part: It is crowded on hot days, really crowded.
David C — Google review
We visited in April. The water level didn’t allow access to the canyon, which we accepted. We were offered entry to the garden with viewing platforms instead. It was the worst part. Out of four viewing platforms, two (the best ones) were closed, and from the remaining ones there was either nothing to see or they were overgrown. There was no information about this online or at the ticket office. I don’t recommend visiting this place outside of the summer months. The only positive aspect was the blooming fruit trees.
Dominik ( — Google review
This was easily one of the coolest parts of our trip. No words, pictures, or videos can ever capture the magic of this place. A few pointers: you can go quite far into the gorge but you will eventually need to turn around. You cannot enter from the north side unless you're part of the waterfall tour. The public entrance is free but you have to use the stairs (looked like ~100m climb). I enjoyed the paid garden walk/hike because you got some cool views but definitely not a must. The water is COLD even in the dead of summer. It's gorge gets crowded and there are very few places to sit. I recommend finding a spot on the sandy part outside and taking turns going in. The water can get deep (~1.3m/5') and the current can be very strong in some areas. Water shoes are recommended.
Patikan — Google review
A wonderful valley with impressive basalt. There are various ways to explore the park. You can hike, bike, walk through the gorge, or go canyoning. The easiest option, which costs €10 for adults, is to take the lift to the beach at the gorge's exit. However, it can get quite crowded there in good weather. The water is very cold. Water shoes are recommended. There's a bistro and shop at the entrance. A visit is highly recommended.
Stephan B — Google review
Best to prepare swimwear and boots for rocks. We went just with normal clothes and our trekking shoes and it still did the job. Even though it is September which is a few months in the dry season there's still quite a bit of water - up to the neck. Base entrance fee is 2€ per person, additional 5€ will get you everywhere in the resort.
Miłosz W — Google review
Go for the public entrance, same experience. Skip the commercial park unless you're disabled. First take the 7€, easy 30 min. walking trail, then take the stairs down, the river is a beauty! Take a short chilling upstream water walk
Amir W — Google review
Now this place was worth the visit! We went second week of October and had free parking on site, 14 euros entry per person that gave you the lift access to the gorge and the walk through the park at the top. The gorge is really amazing, the water is exactly as people say and your ankles will go numb after a while, bring water shoes as it’s all rock in all directions. Even penguins would find it chilly. You can’t walk too far into the gorge as it gets really rocky and the water quite turbulent, we didn’t do one of the excursions but we saw those that did and it could well be worth it for the adventurous, ours was just timing (we’re not wusses!) Walk further down the opposite direction to the gorge and it’s still a good walk and no the water doesn’t warm up. Definitely recommend if you can get here.

Nicolaci Palace

Nicolaci Palace, also known as Palazzo Nicolaci, is a Baroque gem located in Noto, Sicily. This former residence of a wealthy family boasts ornate decor and posh furnishings on display. The palace is famous for its unique balconies that adorn Via Nicolaci, showcasing Baroque creativity at its finest.
Included in the combo tour with the theatre Di Lorenzo and the City Hall (total a tenner). On its own it’s €4 and absolutely worth it. Whilst not as WOW as Palazzo Castellucio, the ballroom is magnificent and the rest of the rooms lovely enough to stroll through. English language placards in most of the rooms if I do recall but they offer general histories and don’t detail all the wonderful artifacts.

An opulent Baroque palace belonging to the princes of Villadorata. You can visit some of the grand rooms including the lavishly decorated ballroom where piano recitals are sometimes held. Worth noting are the balconies with baroque masks for corbels, typical of the Sicilian Baroque style.
Richard Z — Google review
Step in and touch the past of Noto. Interesting place showing you the history of this famous local family as well as their way from France to Italy and Sicily in this case. Walking around in the rooms one has the opportunity to see the "old" way of spending time, having guests, entertaining family and friends in the music room as well as enjoy the view from the balcony. It is worth visiting and exploring this house full of marble.

Five winged horses appear as corbels on the front of Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata (1733) on Via Corrado Nicolaci in Noto, Sicily, Italy. Five plump faces appear on the corbels supporting a balcony of the palace. An annual flower festival called the Infiorata tajkes place on Via Corrado Nicolaci in front of the palace every May.

Virtually a few steps away from the cathedral well worth a visit. Few rooms have explanatory cards though which is a pity. Great views from the ballroom's balcony

A private palace. The last owner didn't have any offspring so it was sold to the state. It is beautifully presented. Especially the ceiling paintings and decorations with 3D effects.

The staff was very kind and the view from the balconies was beautiful. I recommend the combined ticket, together with Municipio and Teatro Tina di Lorenzo

Cattedrale di San Nicolò

Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Noto Cathedral, a reconstructed 18th-century Sicilian baroque cathedral with a neoclassical dome, is located in the city of Noto, which is renowned for its Baroque palaces and churches. The cathedral was partially reconstructed after being damaged by an earthquake. Noto itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has a tourism-driven economy due to its proximity to nature reserves and beautiful beaches.
The cathedral is absolutely beautiful, although the whole of Noto deserves a mention. The architecture is stunning and a lot of work has obviously gone into restoring and maintaining it. Unlike other places in Sicily there is a real effort to keep the city clean and appealing. I can highly recommend a visit, although if beautiful places of worship are your main interest, my (now no longer) secret tip and absolute favourite is Cattedrale Palazzolo Acreide in the mountains between Francofonte and Modica. There is none more beautiful.

Pleasant walk through the Cathedral. Some very interesting art pieces on the walls. You can feel stepping back in time and image the history that took place here long before we arrived.

Noto Cathedral, also known as Cattedrale di San Nicolò, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Noto, Sicily, Italy. Dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, it’s a prime example of Sicilian Baroque architecture. Construction began in the early 18th century after the 1693 earthquake and was completed in 1776. The cathedral features a stunning limestone façade with two bell towers, a monumental staircase, and a central bronze portal depicting scenes from Saint Conrad Confalonieri’s life. Its dome collapsed in 1996 due to structural issues from a 1990 earthquake but was rebuilt, and the cathedral reopened in 2007. The interior, with a Latin cross layout, houses Saint Conrad’s relics and modern frescoes. It’s part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto.
Murat K — Google review
We visited the Cathedral of Noto and were truly impressed. Getting there was very easy – it’s about an hour’s drive from Catania on a smooth and convenient highway. Parking was no problem at all, we even found a free spot right next to the cathedral, which was a big plus. The cathedral itself is located right in the heart of the city, just as you’d expect. While there were some tourists around, it wasn’t overly crowded like in Taormina, which made the visit much more pleasant. The cathedral is stunning from the outside, but equally impressive inside – and best of all, admission is free. It’s definitely worth a visit, whether as part of a day trip or even just a half-day tour, since Noto is not a very large town. Still, there are several beautiful sights to explore, and the cathedral alone makes the trip more than worthwhile.
Leo ( — Google review
The Noto Cathedral is the magnificent centerpiece of Noto, dominating the main square and serving as the city's undisputed Baroque showstopper. Its immense staircase and towering façade are incredibly impressive, but the real magic happens at sunset or late afternoon. As the sun begins to dip, the warm, honey-colored limestone of the cathedral is illuminated by a deep golden light, making the entire structure seem to glow. This is the absolute best time to visit and photograph this stunning example of Sicilian Baroque architecture. We took the advice to sit on the grand staircase for almost 30 minutes, and it was the perfect decision. The steps provide natural seating where you can relax, people-watch, and simply absorb the beauty of the city, all while enjoying the incredible view of the Duomo and the surrounding piazza bathed in that beautiful evening light. It’s a moment of pure, tranquil enjoyment. While the interior is also beautifully restored and worth seeing, the power of this cathedral lies in its exterior presence and its integration into the stunning urban landscape of Noto. It is an unmissable experience.
Halide E — Google review
The cathedral sits beautifully at the top of the main staircase and is one of the highlights of Noto’s baroque architecture. The facade is grand and elegant, and the interior, while simpler, still feels impressive thanks to the height and the soft light coming through the windows. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re walking through the historic center. The view of the cathedral from the bottom of the steps is especially striking.

Warm Noto stone facade on the outside and inside a space of calm contemplation. By far the most spiritual and reflective church I have visited in Sicily. Don’t miss the Pentecost painting in the cupola.

This site is closed because 2 yrs ago there was a fire. Really? It’s a pity. And from the outside there is not much one can see. I wish they opened it again. Also it’s a long walk or, if you are really good at driving, you can reach the base by car and then go up to the Church that is next to the base of the castle. But be careful if you drive because there are a series of tight curves that I was almost sure I was going to scratch the car (I did not) while praying no one would come from the opposite direction.

Santuario Maria SS Mater Adonai

(Translated by Google) I discovered this sanctuary in recent years and I admire the place near the sea in a corner of tranquility from which you can also admire Etna. The church is small and carved into the rock, with a fresco of the Madonna that has faded over time, but I hope that time will be able to restore it to its ancient splendor. I have always attended mass in the summer, but yesterday for Saint Lucia the events made me return to this place. This year in a cave, brought to light by the neglect of time and man, a nativity scene was set up for the Christmas period: a beautiful and evocative creation. The history of this place is long and I hope that Father Palmiro can give a long future to this place that gives me so much tranquility every time (Original) Scoperto questo santuario negli ultimi anni e ammiro il luogo vicino al mare in un angolo di tranquillità da cui si può ammirare anche l'Etna.

(Translated by Google) A splendid place, by the sea with a small early Christian church. Ancient testimonies, as attested by the Hebrew epithet of the Madonna Mater Adonai, or Mother of my Lord. The oratory was founded in the first half of the 3rd century by a Christian named Publius, in one of the hypogea made up of the so-called Greco caves which, since the Paleolithic, have shown a marked sacred vocation. Initially used as funerary hypogea, then occupied by the Megarian Greeks as a shelter and burial place around the 7th century BC, during the Greek colonization of Sicily, then a refuge and place of worship for persecuted Christians (250 AD). They were the faithful of the community of Leontinoi, oppressed by the persecution of Decius and Valerian. The largest of the caves, transformed by the Greeks into a true necropolis, was named after Mater Adonai. The figures painted in the background date back to the 3rd century and were created by Sant'Agatone, bishop of Lipari, who found refuge there together with the Lentino Christians. Recommended destination. Even though we have already gone once but it was very charming....highly recommended. Not easy to find ... arrive with GPS point ..... bye 👋 pat and Mon ... biker for passion 🥰🥰🥰 (Original) Un posto splendido , in riva al mare con una chiesetta paleocristiana. Hotel Panorama di Sicilia offers modest yet stylish rooms with Wi-Fi, providing a low-key and scenic stay on the edge of Castelmola. The vintage look adds charm to the hotel, where the friendly staff ensures a comfortable experience. Guests can enjoy a simple Italian breakfast with croissants and cappuccino while taking in the amazing views. Despite being slightly dated, the cleanliness and hospitality make it a memorable stay.
The hotel has not been renovated and the price reflects this otherwise this hotel renovated would cost triple the price per night ! The owner did explain to us the reason why it has not been renovated due to local council actually owning the property and not wanting to fund the renovations. The rooms are very spacious and clean. There is no TV or fridge in the room which didn’t concern us . The air conditioning works very well and is silent for a good nights sleep. The views are spectacular looking across the bay of Giardino Naxos, Etna Is directly in front of the balcony absolutely beautiful. The hotel offers free parking for hotel guests. The hotel Is family operated and the hosts are very nice and welcoming people , very professional at all times and accomodating . Thank you for a memorable stay

Basic but great B&B, with amazing views of the Etna and coast from the terrace. Nice and helpful staff, big rooms with AC (essential in summer!). The town is charming and this is only 20 min from Taormina by car. Note that access is via two flights of stairs. It's closed from 23:00 but we were given the key to the main door. You can also park in front upon request to staff, you'll need a sign they provide for your car (else, only residents can park in town).

Stayed in a wonderful double room with breakfast served on the terrace. The views of Mt Etna and the coastline is simply superb! Enjoyed very reasonably priced local Sicilian wines to soak up the terrace views. Service was superb, reception even assisting us with parking in the narrow Castelmola streets. Superbly located to explore the wonderful Castelmola with busses providing access to Toarmina. There is a walking path from Castelmola to Taormina, Sentiero dei Saraceni, which was much less taxing than we thought it would be. Highly recommend this accommodation.

We Bad a Beautiful Experience here! We loved balconies and the view outside is stunning. The room is bright and the bedsheets are fresh. We sleep very well here. The hospitality of Igor was incredibly welcomed. Thank you 🤩 I highly recommend this place. Definitely to come back! There is a new restaurant down in the village with high cuisine 🤤. Don’t chose the closest one (“fish one”) it’s typical tourist trap because of the terrace view. Very important fact is that you so high that no traffic there. So your permanence is private and quiet!

Absolutely loved our stay here! The views from our room and breakfast room were stunning and the staff were so kind and welcoming despite not speaking the same language, I don't think anything would have been too much for them. Breakfast consisted of coffee and fruit juice with a fresh croissant filled with either jam or chocolate. The room was perfect for what we needed, nothing fancy but for the price it was fine and we didn't need anything more. Towels and toiletries were also provided which was great and very welcome after we stupidly decided we would walk up from the train station, I don't recommend this haha. There location is perfectly placed for all the local restaurants and stores. If we ever come back to Castelmola we will certainly stay here again.

We had an amazing stay with panoramic view without any disturbances as it stands on the edge of Castlemola. It is not super new hotel but you can see people working there take care of it very much so everything has vintage look. But the bed was a bit hard to sleep for me. Staff was very friendly and breakfast was simple but enough to experience Italian style one(croissant and cappuccino) with amazing view. There are quite a few shops and restaurants within short walks. So it was good for us to stay in quiet environments in Castlemola rather than staying in the center of Taormina.

The Greek Theater, located in the Neapolis archaeological area of Syracuse, is a historic outdoor amphitheater that once accommodated up to 16,000 people. This masterpiece of classical architecture hosted performances by renowned playwrights such as Sophocles, Euripides, and Aeschylus. The theater offers sweeping views and continues to host seasonal performing arts events, making it a significant tourist attraction in the summer months.
Wonderful place to see Greek and Roman structures, the amphitheatre is amazing, a must if you are on the east of the island. A bit of walking, very hot so take a sunshade and walking shoes
Trudy B — Google review
Very interesting history to this place, had much fun walking around and exploring all the beautiful statues. Many people came and it was very busy, also the parking didn’t reall exist and we parked at the side of the road and walked to the front door. But overall it was worth the visit :)
Magali — Google review
Unfortunately (when i visited), most of the ancient theatre was covered over by modern wooden benches and a stage which is such a pity! You could not even go down into the orchestra area. The views are great and there is a nice ancient fountain at the top. It's just disappointing that you can not see most of the ancient theatre, hence the average 3 star review. However, it is still worth a look if you're in the Neapolis archaeological park, which has loads of other great stuff.
Tom B — Google review
We paid 14 € per person to visit the Greek Theater and the surrounding ruins. While the setting itself is undeniably impressive — you can easily imagine the grandeur this amphitheater once had — the experience overall was underwhelming. There’s very little signage or explanation, and almost no context provided for what you’re looking at. Without a guide or advance research, it’s hard to appreciate the full history of the site. For what’s essentially an unmarked collection of ruins, the admission price feels steep. At the very least, there should be better documentation or a lower entry fee. Honestly, this one should have been free.

Ear of Dionysius

The Ear of Dionysius is a remarkable ancient cave in Syracuse, known for its exceptional acoustics and intriguing legend. Shaped like a teardrop, the cave's layout amplifies even the quietest sounds, allowing them to be heard from an opening 72 feet above ground level. Legend has it that the tyrant Dionysius used this cave as a prison and would eavesdrop on his prisoners from the top opening.
A really great place to visit, bring water, I would start with the greek side as it is by far the more interesting. Lots of great artwork, a good use of 2 hours.

Originally, this place was not on my itinerary while visiting the area. I'm incredibly glad plans changed because WOW is this place cool. I'm a guy who loves caves and natural wonder so this place was amazing. The ticket is a tad pricey at €17 but it was worth it. The ruins and the statues were unforgettable. That and the giant head in the main cave... Nothing can replace that uncanny feeling of seeing its gigantic scale for the first time after your eyes adjust. So recommend.
Justin F — Google review
Very unique and interesting place, that was once a sort of 'special effect' machine for a nearby amphitheatre during the ancient times. It was built to resemble inside of a human's ear, with according acoustics and a special echo effect. Would recommend, definitely worth visiting (even if it's a little too touristy and crowded for my taste).
Aleksa P — Google review
The Ear of Dionysius is one of the most fascinating monuments in Syracuse. This artificial cave, carved out of limestone in ancient times, was later associated with the tyrant Dionysius I. According to tradition, he used its unique acoustics to eavesdrop on prisoners, as even the faintest whispers could be heard clearly due to the cave’s shape. Whether legend or history, the site showcases both the ingenuity of ancient quarrying techniques and the myths that grew around them. A must-see for anyone interested in history and archaeology.

Neapolis Archaeological Park in Syracuse is a sprawling natural park that houses ancient Greek and Roman ruins. The park features a well-preserved Greek theater, a Roman amphitheater, a sacrificial altar, and various quarries. One of the main attractions is the impressive Roman amphitheater, which could accommodate over 15,000 spectators and was used for gladiatorial games and public events.
Fantastic couple of hours spent here wandering around Yes there are no signs as such & yes the big amphitheater is covered over but it’s great it’s still in use ☺️ Ignore the moaners it’s 17€ well spent- lasts longer than a cocktail 🤣 & your immersed. Amazing place. The sites are very well presented. And the statues and works of art add to the experience. Finding the ticket office (down the slope from the main entrance) was a little confusing. And it was so hot the day we went that we should have gone on a cooler day. But the site is minutes from the amenities of Siracusa. Recommended.
Andrew G — Google review
Very impressive ruins, good to read up before you go as not much signage about it. I very much enjoyed the modern art installations, felt it was tasteful and added interest. Plenty of toilets and shade, always worth knowing! Ticket office is opposite entry gates.

Had an amazing morning here. The architecture and the history was amazing and could have stayed their so much longer. We did leave as the heat started to get to us so I do recommend getting their first thing in the morning. The parking is great and we only had to walk for about 5 minuets. Overall was absolutely amazing and highly recommend.
Niamh S — Google review
The entry is 18€ for the whole site. The caves, the greek theatre, the roman theatre etc. It's pretty big and beautiful to visit. However, they should work on the path signaling and add some information panels about the ruins. You don't get any information about it. Just some info about the statues and the artist
Audrey V — Google review
Lovely place and added artwork and statues make it even more special… but chaotic and complicated to get around as signage is not clear. You buy tickets far away from main entrance and cannot get a site map where you buy ticket (why?). Instead you are being send somewhere else for the map. Area of Archimedes’ tomb was ‘closed’ something that wasn’t disclosed when buying €17 ticket.
Anna M — Google review
The Neapolis Archaeological Park in Siracusa is, from a historical perspective, undeniably fascinating. The remnants of antiquity, particularly the famous Ear of Dionysius and the impressive sculptures scattered throughout the grounds, are indeed worth seeing. However, the manner in which the site is presently maintained leaves much to be desired. Tickets have to be bought at some far away shed outside of the park near the busstop and tourist market. Which was weird because in the park there are several large modern, but closed, ticket and information offices, probably funded by the EU. Large sections of the park are either heavily overgrown, inaccessible, or entirely closed off, giving an air of neglect that is most disappointing for such an important cultural landmark. This was not noted at the ticket office. The designated walking routes are confusing at best and, more often than not, simply incorrect. The map provided — in a lamentable state of disrepair — is sadly emblematic of the wider management of the park. Whilst the historical treasures remain, the experience is overshadowed by poor upkeep and an entrance fee of €17 per person which feels unreasonably steep given the overall condition. Particularly regrettable is the fact that the Tomb of Archimedes is not accessible from within the park and can be seen more clearly from the public street outside. In sum, the Neapolis Archaeological Park offers extraordinary history wrapped in extraordinarily poor maintenance. The Ear of Dionysius alone is marvellous, but one cannot help but feel that this jewel of Siracusa deserves far better care and presentation than it currently receives.

A hidden powerhouse. First, complaints. A real Greek Tragedy. Undermanned. Understaffed. Half the park is closed for any number of reasons. Boooooo. And for 18+€. But, once you see the scale of the sculptures in contrast to nature and architecture, its stunning. Be prepared to be hot during the summer. Bring or buy water.

Syracuse Cathedral

Sights & Landmarks
Syracuse Cathedral, or Cattedrale di Santa Maria delle Colonne, is a breathtaking Baroque masterpiece that dates back to the 7th century. This architectural gem was built on the site of an ancient Greek Temple dedicated to Athena, showcasing a fascinating blend of history as it incorporates original Doric columns into its design. Over the years, this cathedral has seen numerous transformations, making it a significant symbol of Syracuse's rich ecclesiastical and cultural heritage.
It’s confusing if this is the temple of Athena or the cathedral, but maybe it’s both? Maybe it was once where the temple stood and is now the cathedral? Regardless, this place is stunning and a mixture of styles spanning the ages. It’s polished in places and extremely corse in others, it’s large and lofty with little rooms jutting off. It’s only 2 euros to get in and it goes to a good cause so I will highly recommend such a place. I enjoyed the candles that are electric, if not seen that before. It was also quite peaceful inside and co rains human remains in show which may spook some people. Grazie!

An absolute marvel! The Syracuse Cathedral is not only a stunning example of Baroque architecture, but also a place where history truly comes alive. Built directly over the ancient Temple of Athena, it still preserves the original Doric columns, seamlessly integrated into the cathedral walls — a breathtaking fusion of ancient Greek and Christian heritage. Located in Ortigia, the historical heart of Syracuse and an island of extraordinary charm, the cathedral stands as a symbol of a city that was once among the greatest in the ancient world. Long before the Roman Empire flourished — when Rome had only around 50,000 inhabitants — Syracuse was already a thriving metropolis with over 300,000 people! The entire island is a scenery of an amazing past, echoing the grandeur of a civilization that shaped the Mediterranean. A must-visit for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone seeking to walk through millennia of human achievement.

Unfortunately, the facade of the building was under renovation and we couldn't see it, but even so, the visit was worth it because inside you can see and touch the original ancient Doric columns from the Temple of Athena. It's quite impressive how parts of this place have survived nearly 2500 years and are so well preserved.

The Cathedral of Syracuse (Cattedrale metropolitana della Natività di Maria) was built over the ancient Temple of Athena (Minerva), erected in 480 BC after the victory of Himera. Parts of the original Doric columns are still visible in the structure, a reminder of the great monument that once stood here. While the Baroque architecture is remarkable, the transformation came at the cost of destroying an ancient Greek temple. It is an important historical site, but the loss of the original sanctuary cannot be ignored.

A stunning church with breathtaking architecture and rich history. The intricate details of the interior, combined with the peaceful atmosphere, make it a must-visit. The blend of ancient and baroque influences is mesmerizing, and the stained glass windows are truly beautiful. Whether you're here for spiritual reflection or historical interest, it's a place that leaves a lasting impression. Highly recommend taking a moment to admire its beauty and serenity.

Beautiful Baroque church with a stunning façade and serene interior. One of the chapels offers a peaceful moment of reflection. Free entry and popular with visitors — definitely worth a stop while exploring Ortigia.

Unique. A cathedral construction with ancient Greek pillars from the temple of Athena mixed with 18th century Rococo! Set in a lovely plaza. Sit with a beer in the restaurant opposite the cathedral and watch humanity wonder by.

Absolutely breathtaking. I went in with curiosity, but I left completely speechless. The Syracuse Cathedral took me by surprise in the best possible way. Truly one of the highlights of my visit to Sicily. I highly recommend it!

Ortigia, a charming island with a rich history dating back to the 8th century BC, is the heart of Syracuse. Influenced by Greek, Roman, Arab, and Norman cultures over the centuries, Ortigia boasts historic stone buildings, squares, temples, shops and eateries. The island has been thoughtfully renovated to create a vibrant destination loved by tourists.
Centre with history, culture and great atmosphere. Beautiful beach’s (much more beautiful than if you go outside the city centre). A lot of shops and a multitude of restaurants not so expensive. You can also see a beautiful sunset also.

One of my favourite places on a trip to Sicily. Quaint, wonderful architecture, excellent market with grocery and stalls to eat. Some of the best cheeses and calamari. Wear running shoes and take lots of water. It is hot - little shade. We parked in Syracuse just before the bridge in a parking lot. Well work not driving on the island.

Ortigia, Sicily is a captivating place to explore—rich in history, charming streets, and stunning landmarks. We visited in May when the weather was pleasantly warm but not too crowded. Sunscreen, a hat, and comfy walking shoes are essential. It felt very safe, and the local Sicilian cuisine is a highlight—fresh, flavourful, and varied. Booking a guided tour is highly recommended to truly appreciate the history and stories behind the key sights. A perfect blend of culture, food, and relaxation.

Love Ortigia! So many interesting stories, so much to see and do and taste. If you are in Sicily you need to out this on the list. Tip: take one of those convertible piaggio tours, perfect to see everything

Ortigia came as a ‘must do’ when on Sicily from one of my Italian colleagues And we weren’t disappointed It’s a charming little place to lose yourself in small alleys or just follow the coastline When crossing on of the bridges from Siracusa, make sure to say hi to Arcimede’s statue. If you use your eyes you can find some artisinal treasures amongst the mass produced tourist junk. There’s no shortage of places to sit and enjoy food and drinks Where Ortigia is reasonably well kept snd efforts are being made to keep it that way, sadly Siracusa itself doesn’t fare as well. Still, a nice place to spend a day The one thing we absolutely didn’t like was the sudden influx of elderly tourists when a huge cruise liner moored.

The old town is a nice size. A leisure walk to see it all
