On 22nd February, 2025. The Model Christian College, Department of Geology, Kohima, B.Sc. 6th semester students carried out the geological fieldwork in this Khangkhui Cave (Khangkhui Mangsor). It is fully limestone deposit and interesting to see the cave, formation of stalactites and stalagmites. This is the best time to visit and well dried inside the cave as well, I find the local people are friendly and have a great hospitality. I encourage students or youth to explore such an amazing natural beauty.

The Khangkhui Cave, locally called as Khangkhui Mangsor, is essentially a natural limestone cave. Archaeologists have discovered many important artefacts, dating back to the Palaeolithic culture from this cave. The cave is about 15 km away on eastern side from Ukhrul town. It takes around 1.30 hours to reach the cave. The cave was used as a shelter by the local people during World War II. The cave is said to be the home of the King who lived with his two wives.

Brings out the adventurist in you! 1 star less for all the plastic pollution. Visitors should take care and bring their trash back instead of dumping it all over the place.

Kohima Cathedral Church

Churches & Cathedrals
Kohima Cathedral Church, located in the city of Kohima, is a significant landmark and a must-visit for those interested in its historical significance. This church, built in Naga architectural style, stands as a symbol of love, peace, and hope amidst the city's violent past. It was constructed by the Japanese after the Battle of Kohima to offer prayers for their lost ones.
Beautiful. Serene. Divine. Located in Kohima's Aradurah Hill, the Cathedral Church is easily accessible from the main town distanced about 12 km from the War Cemetery (another place to see, landmark). One can take a cab for about Rs. 200 from there to the Church. Whether you are a believer or not, the Cathedral is a sight to behold. The stained glass, the wooden work, the statue of the Christ and the deafening sanctity of the place, all make up for a pious experience. The view from the Cathedral ground is the other thing to look forward to, giving an almost panoramic view of Kohima.
Tanmay P — Google review
The beautiful architecture built during colonial era. We don’t get chance to see the church inside. The outer itself is so peaceful and picturesque, has won our hearts. It is at top of the hill. From every point of Kohima the church can be seen. One must visit this particular church to witness the history and hard efforts made in bygone days. Parking is there within premises.
Nivedita M — Google review
During our stay in Kohima, we visited the Cathedral of Kohima – Mary Help of Christians Church – and it truly left us in awe. Perched on a hilltop, this iconic cathedral offers panoramic views of the city and is one of the most beautiful and serene places of worship we’ve ever seen. Its unique architecture and peaceful ambiance made it one of the highlights of our trip – a must-visit for anyone exploring Kohima.
Snighdha M — Google review
In the morning, I visited the Kohima Cathedral Church and it was an amazing experience. The church itself opens at 8 AM if you want to go inside, but recommend going much earlier to witness the sunrise. From the hilltop, you get a breathtaking panoramic view of Kohima city wrapped in morning mist. The architecture of the church is also unique, blending modern design with Naga traditions, and it feels very peaceful to sit there quietly. Whether you are religious or not, this place is worth visiting for its beauty, serenity, and the unforgettable sunrise view over the city.

This is an extraordinary Roman Catholic Cathedral situated in the most beautiful location. I had the special blessing of speaking with the Bishop about Easter services, had parishioners provide me with the Holy Week services times, and was invited to have a cup of tea. I'm so grateful for everyone's kindness and thoughtfulness during my visit. The Stations of the Cross are magnificent. The view of the city takes your breath away.

This has been one of the most beautiful Cathedrals I’ve visited in India. The cathedral inside felt extremely grand and divine! It’s beautifully constructed and nicely maintained with trees and flowers at every corner of the space. Every corner of the place is a treat to your eyes and totally picturesque. You get a panoramic view of the entire township of Kohima. We spent more than an hour or two just strolling around and soaking the beauty. They have also beautifully showcased the crucification process of Jesus placed around the cathedral. If you’re in Kohima, please don’t miss a visit to this grandeur, especially during the sunset hour!

Honestly, this is one of the cleanest spots I've found in Kohima. The place is not just spotless, but it also looks amazing and the views are beautiful. There's something really magical about being here, makes you just want to chill and take it all in. Would definitely recommend if you're in town!
Imsü — Google review
Cathedral Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, Kohima (A Bridge for the living & the dead) The Cathedral is the most important Church in a diocese since it is the seat of the diocesan bishop and as the symbol of unity and hierarchical communion in the Church. In fact the term “Cathedra” means Chair. It is the Church where the bishop of the diocese presides over the liturgy. The word “Catholic” is derived from the Latin word “Catholicus” and the Greek adjective” Katholkose” meaning ‘Universal”. The building itself by its physical structure symbolises both the glory of God and of the Church. Though the diocese of Kohima-Imphal was erected in 1973 there was no Cathedral Church built for the diocese. Bishop Abraham Alangimattathil, SDB, who was the first bishop of the diocese of Kohima wanted to build a Cathedral blending and amalgamating the Christian theology and architecture with the local cultural tradition and symbols. In many places the Catholic Church has the agent of inculturation mainly in the architectural, furnishing and decoration in literature and liturgy.  With this plan in mind in 1982 the agreement with the Architect was signed and in 1983 the Church site was dedicated in the plot of land measuring 9.13 at Kuozhu, on the Aradurah hill now called New Minister Hill, overlooking the beautiful Kohima town and facing the historic Second World War Cemetery. It is visible from most of the mountain ranges surrounding the capital city of Kohima. The construction of the Cathedral began in 1985. Designed in Naga-Gothic style, built in a semi-circular shape, adapting and harmoniously blending both Christian and Naga cultural elements and art, the Cathedral stands as a historical monument. The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians was officially consecrated in April 1991, after a peace memorial service, in which some war veterans from England and Japan who fought in the battle of Kohima, the last battle in the east of the Second World War, participated and came together for a reconciliation service and peace treaty, which may be first of its kind in the post-world second war period. In fact the roof of the Cathedral is red to signify the blood of Christ and blood of humans and of war victims.

We set up our visit with Purvi Discovery LTD. They did a GREAT job getting everything in order. No problems at all! Recommend them for you tour. This is a great hidden gem of a reserve. I think many people think of the major National Parks in Assam, but this is an awesome, small accessible wildlife sanctuary. You will definitely see Gibbons, as well as some other primate and bird wildlife. The people that run the sanctuary are very nice and they did a great job. It is a nice, relatively easy walking tour, which was really fun to get out in the middle of nature and see the wildlife all around you. The curious think you will learn is that Gibbons essentially never touch the ground their whole life. They live in the treetops their entire life. Keep a sharp eye out, and try to not make too much noise, as they are very skiddish. If they hear you bumbling along the trail, they will swing away to get away from you. If you go to Assam, DO NOT skip this little sanctuary. It only takes a few hours on your way to Kaziranga!

A Must-Visit for Nature Enthusiasts and Wildlife Lovers Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is an incredible destination for anyone passionate about nature and wildlife. I recently had the pleasure of visiting, and my experience was nothing short of amazing. During my visit, I was fortunate enough to spot the Western Hoolock Gibbon, several rare bird species, intriguing spiders, and much more. Although I visited in the evening and didn’t have enough time to fully explore everything the sanctuary has to offer, the time I did spend there was thoroughly enjoyable. The serene atmosphere and the opportunity to witness such unique wildlife up close made it a memorable experience. I highly recommend Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary to all nature and wildlife lovers. Whether you're a seasoned explorer or just looking for a peaceful retreat into nature, this sanctuary is a must-visit. I'll definitely plan a longer visit next time to fully immerse myself in this natural wonder. Thank you!

The unique 'virgin forest' of the North east in Assam - a safe heaven of about 7 primates including one nocturnal is Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary formerly known as Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary. The "hooow lonnnng tree" as defined by the Britishers (Hollong tree, Dipterocarpus retusus), dictates the upper canopy of this evergreen forest and a treat to stare at it. Spend almost half of the day making your path way through the thick bushes Shrubs and herbs in the leech infested area chasing the illusive Hoolock Gibbons (the main attraction) and the other primates. You will be mesmerized with their activities, family's courtship, feeding and communication behaviour. The butterfly concentration is also good here. Birds are hard to locate due to the dense foliage. All theses for a very nominal charge (entry fee 50/-, camera fee 50/- and guide fee 300/-) Habitate loss of this primate due to gradual shinking of the canopy area is becoming a bigger threat for the Gibbons as they never leave the trees and move on the land. The government of Assam is taking necessary steps for their protection but more aggressive steps are required for the conservative and protection of these species. Eagerly waiting to visit the place again and again.

Located around 21 km from the main town of Jorhat, this beautiful wildlife sanctuary is famous for its 7 primates/ 5 types of 🐒 including hoolock gibbon. Apart from the gibbon, one can see capped langur, stump-tailed macaque, pigtail macaque, Assamese macaque, rhesus macaque and slow loris, elephant and so many other species of animals here. We were lucky to spot barking deer, red headed trogan, wablers, sunbird, minivet, malayan squirrel, parakeets etc including fresh marks of leopard & wild boar. Don't carry heavy lenses like 600mmf4 as you need to walk a lot inside bushes with no path. Just carry lighter lenses like 200-600 or 500mm f5.6 / 300mm f4 as most of the times monkeys will be hanging on trees 70° - 90° with fast movement between branches. There wil be lots of leeches inside forest but not to worry if you are covered fully including leech socks paired with good trekking shoe. This sanctuary is open all days & no holidays. I will recommend you to stay nearby sanctuary & spend 2-3 days to explore sanctuary to the fullest. Overall I loved exploring this beautiful sanctuary, less people, more of birds n animals including butterflies. Will recommend to others also.

As you walk through, you'll hear birds singing and the soft sound of leaves swaying in the breeze. It's a perfect escape from daily stress. Hot Springs is easily accessible, featuring steps designed for both the elderly and the young. The surroundings are pristine, with a clean river and an overall pleasant ambiance. Sitting on the bench with closed eyes offers the chance to experience the softest blending of sounds of flowing water and bird song, taking you to your soothing atmosphere that you created in your mind. A visit, I would recommend to all of you.

Very beautiful and amazing place. Highly recommend to visit this place. The hot water pond are so amazing with hot water crystal clear and well maintained.

The sanctuary is famous for its hot spring and waterfall.. Its better to visit that place in your own private wheels.. Better to take food with you or eat before you visit. The road distances from nearest Towns : from Golaghat is 35 km, from Diphu is 92 km, from Guwahati is 330 km and Kaziranga is 45 km away.
Niyas K — Google review
I personally like "Garampani ", because nature is great, it really can be crowded in middle of the day or weekends, so better to be early morning or at least on normal days, otherwise lovely spot for recharge, to have picnic, to see some animals, if you are lucky :), or elegant drops if you aren't that lucky. One thing is disturbing is trash, people not cleaning after themselves, but not critical level, but still it's not cool.

Dense forest with Highway passing through the forest, Best for one day Cycling trip from Golaghat and Back, A long drive from Jorhat is also an available option (Follow Dimapur highway through Golaghat/ Bikers can take detour if likes to experience rural landscape), Small tourist attractions like Hot water spring and park, Request- Please don't litter.......
Essar S — Google review
The road was surprisingly good at the end but from Golaghat, it was hell. I didn't think it was free of charge to enter, but we didn't have to pay. Overall it was an average experience. The Nambor road is more worth it.
Zeeshan B — Google review
Located in the middle of Nambor Wildlife Sanctuary at Karbi Anglong district is Garampani, the natural hot water spring of Assam. Very beautiful and well maintained by the forest department. It's a very popular tourist place. Road conditions are really good and close from Golaghat town as well as Borpothar block along with Dimapur district from Nagaland.

Kakochang Waterfall (Kaipholangso Waterfall)

Nature & Parks
Waterfalls
Best Experience ever. One of the biggest Waterfalls in Assam. Huge Gathering on special occasions like picnic season and summers. The environment is so great. The long pedal journey gives an extra kick to reaching the waterfall. Slightly dangerous, i don't recommend it for kids to go there. The water is freezing like cool. There is a boundary to not go near the waterfall. Because the wave is so fast and heavy anyone can hurt easily. Likewise look at it from the distance to feel the beauty of nature and enjoy it. I enjoyed it a lot with my friends. The sprinkles of the water gives an extraordinary effect to feel it like cherished by the beauty of Heaven. I liked the place a lot and everyone should visit the place once to feel the beauty of nature.
Amlan B — Google review
It’s a beautiful waterfall, there is some walking through a green passage. The locals sell sliced pineapples on the way which are sweet and nice too. There are small streams on the walkway. The only bad thing is people throwing trash like empty bottles, plastic packets all around. Wish there were dustbins around.
Puja S — Google review
The place was very good and during the visit it require around 1km trekking from the parking area. During the walk you can experience the small water crossing ways and the sky walk to the waterfalls Recommended to visit
Sachin S — Google review
Hidden like a Bollywood plot twist in the lush embrace of Bokakhat, Assam, the beautiful Kakochang Waterfall is the kind of place where your phone signal disappears, your soul reconnects, and your inner poet suddenly starts using words like “pristine” and “serene” without irony. Just 13 km from the more “touristy” Kaziranga National Park, Kakochang is the underrated sibling that doesn’t scream for attention but wins hearts anyway. Cascading dramatically from the forested heights of the Karbi Anglong hills, this waterfall isn’t just water meeting gravity — it’s Mother Nature’s way of saying, “Relax, human. I’ve got this.” The Fall Guy Kakochang (also spelled "Kakojan", if Google Maps is in a mood) is a seasonal stunner. Monsoon turns it into a roaring beauty, while the dry season makes it a gentle stream — perfect for Instagrammers who like their nature photogenic but not splashy. And let’s not forget the approach. You’ll trek through thick bamboo groves, wild orchids, and enough slippery roots to test your relationship with both gravity and your hiking boots. But trust me, every puff and pant is worth the grand finale of water theatrics. Bonus Bait Nearby The waterfall isn’t just sitting pretty — it’s got some historical neighbors! The ruins of Numaligarh (yes, a whole ancient city!), and the tea gardens of Bokakhat are just a hop and a DSLR click away. We Recommend 1. Best time to visit? Post-monsoon (Oct–Feb). The waterfall’s full, but your shoes won’t be. 2. Pack light, but bring a towel. There’s a solid chance you’ll accidentally on purpose get drenched! 3. Wear good shoes. The path’s not for stilettos or Delhi mall-walkers. Final Splash The Kakochang Waterfall is the liquid love letter from Assam’s wild heart. It's nature’s own spa day — no appointment needed, just a sense of wonder and maybe a spare pair of socks. Fun Fact: Locals believe the area was once a tribal kingdom centuries ago — no wonder it feels royal!
Rajdeep D — Google review
A must visit place for everyone and best to visit in hot days so that you can enjoy cool breezing air with water drops on your face in front of water fall. Visited Kakochang waterfall with friends and family on weekend. Enjoyed a lot whole day with nature. Around 90 minutes travel from Jorhat by car. From parking area, it's about one km trekking to reach waterfall site. During that one km you will come across many small stream of water which is most amazing part of trekking. You can spent whole day there. If you are in a group then the experience is going to be amazing. Take your eatings with you or you can make there also if you are planning to do so. Go in sleepers not shoes.

A good place to visit when in Kaziranga. Waterfall is picturesque. A 25 mins walk from parking. It is safe can take kids as well. While walking there will be water streams from which you can walk or if don’t wish to walk through waters than there are walking bridges made. There will be no network once you reach half the way. We visited in mid March.

What a beautiful place . Really it was wonderful experience. What a beautiful place to spend time with family and friends. The road is awesome. Be ready to walk around 2km something from parking location. Is in Karbi anglong district . The waterfall is most beautiful. You can feel the water splashing the sound . Please visit everyone. And enjoy us. Thank you. ☺️
Chandan G — Google review
Kakochang waterfall is about an hour drive from Kaziranga National Park. It's another half an hour walking, climbing steps/ramps through the forest to reach the spot. But it's worth the effort to visit the waterfall. It's a place for nature lovers, to enjoy the peaceful surrounding. There is a small stall who serve typical Assamese food. The road leading to the waterfall is lined with tea estates. The trip to the waterfall can be combined with a visit to the Archiological site, Deopahar.

An absolutely wonderful experience! Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park has the largest collection of orchid varieties in the world, and it’s truly mesmerizing to see. The instructors were extremely passionate and explained each variety with great clarity, you can really feel their love for what they do. All the staff were polite, friendly, and deeply committed to their work. We also got to watch some of the local Assamese dance performances they were preparing, which were amazing! The park itself is rich in flora, and the environment feels so alive. Don’t miss trying the traditional Assamese thali at the park, it was spectacular, with at least 16 delicious items. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Kaziranga ,a must-visit spot that beautifully showcases Assam’s natural and cultural heritage.

Don't skip this on your way to the Kaziranga safari adventure. It only takes a few hours on your way to the park, and it is a good cultural experience of the people in the region, and the orchid garden is quite lovely. You will see so many variants of native and non-native orchids, and learn how they grow and thrive. There are a few other agricultural and cultural displays (traditional dancing, rice/miller education etc) you can see as well.

One of the few things you can do apart from safariy it is a really cool place with a lot to do, we think 3 hours should be enough, we went to see the orchids, amazing musical instruments museum, cactus greenhouse, some medicinal herbs selling point we didn't have time for, a really nice bamboo park, a restaurant. They perform dances on stage, I think they do it all day round, we came there just after the morning safari and saw it at least twice, so it's hard to miss it.

Kaziranga Main Entrance - Kaziranga Range, kohora

Sights & Landmarks
Historic Sites
The entrance to the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE - Kaziranga National Park - central zone. The one-horned rhino - the obvious attraction of this place and secondly the probability of tiger spotting in this zone makes this part the most visited area of Kaziranga. But most of us don't know this place is also a birders paradise and Butterfly hotspot. After the rainy season this place becomes an abode to the winged fairies. With the breathtaking landscape one will fall in love with this place. Must visit.
PINAK D — Google review
The elephant safari was nice. We started at 5.20 and came back by 6.20. Within that hour, we had a real close interaction with One horned Rhino, sambar, swamp deer, wild Buffalo and a few birds. It's definitely one of the top 3 best Safari in India. Refreshments available near main gate from 6.30 am

Don't come here at december, and if you do then try to avoid this central range. It is dust everywhere. So many zeep together, and they create a hell of dust. Too much crowd some time making a jam. Animal sighting was good. Saw rhinos, elephant, boar, deer, monkeys, turtles, and lots of birds.

Enjoyed my jeep safari in this range. Saw various types of birds ,deer, Bengal tiger and rhinos. This range has the highest tiger population in kaziranga. If your primary goal is to see rhinos and lots of tiger this range will not disappoint you.

Kaziranga National Park is an amazing place to experience wildlife in its natural habitat. The highlight was definitely seeing the one-horned rhinos up close, along with elephants, deer, and a variety of birds. The jeep safari was an amazing experience, taking us through beautiful grasslands and dense forests.

This is the central zone and most popular zone of Kaziranga. You can sight various animal ans birds inside this zone. This zone is also popular for tiger sighting. You can buy tickets in online. In the afternoon the entry time is 1.30PM yto 3.00PM and before 5PM you need to make exit from the zone. Guards checks the bag before entering the place.
Debpurna B — Google review
The place is called Mihimukh. The police personnel check the vehicles and bags thoroughly. They don't allow any food or plastic to be taken inside the Park. It is this alertness and vigilance that keeps Kaziranga so clean and free from any littering and the animal population healthy.

I had the best experience of travelling to Shillong and Guwahati with Anshuman travels. It was very well coordinated . The car arrived on time at the airport and the chauffer was very punctual and we'll behaved. The hotels they provided were standard and trustworthy with quality rooms and food. Also I got back my set of airdopes which I lost at the hotel room entirely at their initiative. I highly recommend Anshuman travels!!
Turni S — Google review
Do not use this travel agent; he earns massive cuts from drivers and hotels and is not committed to a good service. We were travelling from England to see Kaziranga Nature Reserve and for our 6 day trip, Anshuman Travels booked us to visit Kaziranga on the last day, which would have been fine except we realised after reaching Assam that on the last two days of our trip, the safaris were cancelled owing to Gaja Mahotsav. This was a shock and disappointing to say the least as we missed the most looked forward to part of our long-planned trip. Anshuman did not take any responsibility for this and did not rearrange things for us. We were encouraged by positive reviews online but had an awful experience with this agent. The hotels booked were sub-standard and the agent did not take any responsibility for changing things for us. Instead, he cancelled our bookings and did not return our money. He took Rs 30,000 advance and only provided services worth Rs 21,000. He cancelled our bookings and left us stranded without a booked hotel for four nights. Since we were travelling with children and parents, this left us in a precarious situation. Very sad that this should happen to anyone. No apology rendered; not even money refunded for services not provided.

We took the services of Anshuman travels to execute our 8 days Assam and Meghalaya trip in March 2023. Biswas da is very responsive and prompt with his inputs and iternary planning. We were assigned a dedicated cab and driver for the entire week. Our driver Biplob was prompt from airport pick up to dropping us back after a week. He is a very good driver and also helped us finding vegetarian hotels across the tour. During the tour Biswas da was very quick to address a few challenges that came our way. He was also very helpful with his inputs on elephant safari and Brahmaputra cruise. Over all I recommend there services if you are planning a north east trip.

We had a great experience with Anshuman Travels from 27th May to 1st June 2019. Our Guwahati, Shillong & Cherrapunji tour was well organised by the travel agency. Whenever next if we plan a tour to north-east we will once again take the services of Anshuman Travels & recommend to other travellers also. The trip was nicely organised and even though we had many intermittent changes in our plans, our host Swarnendu provided us with good alternatives... Although admittedly the driver of our Innova was at times not as cooperative as we would have liked, all in all it was an amazing experience. The hotels were also very good and the overall experience was just amazing and a week that will be etched in our memories forever.

State Museum

Museum
Specialty Museums
Displays of traditional costumes, jewelry & weaponry in a museum exploring local tribal culture.
The best place to visit in Itanagar where it showcases the rich cultural and linguistic heritage of Arunachal Pradesh. The museum nicely depicts the various indigenous tribes of Arunachal Pradesh, their location, food habits, agriculture, habitat, customs, religions, and festivals. The two-storey building also houses various excavated armories, archaeological items from various parts of this beautiful state. Additionally, it has a separate northeast gallery where the cultural diversity of other NE states is nicely described. Approximate visit time is 1 hour; you can easily spend 2-3 hours observing all these. A must visit place if you are in Itanagar.
Shinjan P — Google review
It is a regional museum showcasing artifacts and heritage of Arunachal Pradesh. The collection is quite good and showcases the local heritage and history. I feel if they keep a description of each tribe (their customs, food and living style) along with the 3-D models, it will be perfect.
Tonuruchi O — Google review
A very beautiful, well maintained, neat and clean Museum showcasing the culture of Arunachal Pradesh with most emphasis on various aboriginal tribes. It also has sections dedicated some very popular figures originating from the state. The staff is very welcoming, helpful and friendly. Entry fee is Rs. 20/- plus another 20/- for Camera for Indians.
Shaik M — Google review
If you want to know about local tribes of Arunachal Pradesh then it is a good place to visit. Ticket price for an adult (indian) is 20 rs. Only. For foreigners (100rs) only that is 1 $ approx. Time needed to visit (1-2 hours) Improvement:- Since it is a public place, at least it needs to have a water cooler for the public. During our visit, there was one water dispenser near the emergency exit gate but it was also not working. But staff behaviour is very nice they offered water from their bottle.
Himanshu M — Google review
The Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum in Itanagar is a great place to explore the culture of Arunachal Pradesh. Most exhibits are self-explanatory, with clear information provided, so visitors can easily understand the artifacts without needing a guide, though guides are available. However, the maps and information displayed are outdated, and some maps are inaccurate. Updating these would improve the museum's overall experience, especially as new districts have been created and more research has emerged. Despite this, it remains a valuable and informative museum.

Atop a hill overlooking the Brahmaputra River, the Ma Bhairavi Mandir brings a deep sense of peacefulness in the visitor. There is no one out to fleece the devotee. The first visit was at night when no one was there. We left our shoes in the car at the foot of the hill and walked barefoot up the steps. In the next visit in the morning, I sat in the temple complex for a long time and liked it very much.

Enter the inner sanctorium and feel the divine energy of Maa Bhairavi. Mostly people sit and meditate here. One can feel divine mother presence in this powerful temple. The Enigmatic Bhairabi Temple of Tezpur, Assam Nestled amidst the rolling hills and mighty Brahmaputra River in Tezpur, Assam, lies the ancient and enigmatic Bhairabi Temple. Shrouded in legend and history, this temple dedicated to Goddess Durga presents a captivating blend of spiritual charm and architectural wonder. Bhairabi Temple, Tezpur, Assam A Legacy Forged in Stone: While the exact origins remain shrouded in mist, some believe the temple dates back to the 9th century, built by the Asura King Banasura. Intricate stone carvings on the temple walls whisper tales of a glorious past, showcasing remnants of its intricate 9th-century architecture. The temple grounds encompass a serene pond and a picturesque landscape, adding to the spiritual ambiance. A Goddess with Many Faces: The temple primarily worships Goddess Durga in her fierce Bhairabi form, symbolizing strength, power, and protection. Uniquely, unlike traditional Durga depictions, the Bhairabi idol holds a skull and a severed arm, reflecting her fierce aspect. Devotees from across Assam and beyond flock to the temple seeking blessings, particularly during Durga Puja, celebrated with grand fervor. Whispers of Legends: Mythology intertwines with history, weaving tales of Usha, daughter of Banasura, who worshipped here regularly. The nearby Bamuni Hills are said to be the remnants of her palace, adding to the temple's mystical aura. Sacrificial offerings of goats and birds, though uncommon today, remain a part of the temple's ancient traditions. A Haven for the Soul: Beyond the religious significance, Bhairabi Temple offers a tranquil escape. The panoramic views of the Brahmaputra River and the surrounding hills soothe the mind and inspire awe. The temple complex provides a peaceful space for meditation, reflection, and connecting with oneself. Visiting Bhairabi Temple: Located on the outskirts of Tezpur, the temple is easily accessible by road. The best time to visit is during the cooler months, from October to March, when the weather is pleasant. Remember to dress modestly and respectfully when visiting the temple. Bhairabi Temple stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Assam. Its captivating blend of history, mythology, and spiritual energy makes it a must-visit for anyone seeking a unique and enriching experience in Tezpur

Peaceful environment, well mannered priest. Bhairavi Mandir is one of the 51th Sakti Peeth. This is situated at the top of a hill, near Bamuni Hills. The environment is full of silence, positivity, clean, cool and greenery. River Bhorolu or Brahmaputra is flowing besides the temple.

Agnigarh

Mentioned on

Park
Nature & Parks
Agnigarh is a famous hillside area with a rich history rooted in Hindu mythology. The park features numerous historic sculptures and offers breathtaking viewpoints of the surrounding area, including the Brahmaputra river. However, visitors should be prepared to climb several steps to reach the top, which may be difficult for elderly individuals. Once at the summit, visitors can enjoy a small park and garden while admiring a bird's eye view from the watchtower.
This fortress is at such a beautiful location. View of Brahmaputra at evening hour must be breathtaking. I visited in the noon so it was quite warm but the garden is worth spending time and knowing the history of king Bana and his daughter Usha. Sculpture representation of historic events is done in a nice way. Entry ticket is 30rs per head. Parking is 30rs. About 500 steps to climb up to go till the top. The climb is worth..
Shweta K — Google review
If Romeo and Juliet had a Northeast Indian reboot with a fiery twist, it would be set atop the Agnigarh Hill — a place where love quite literally burned bright. Welcome to the iconic Agnigarh Fort in Tezpur, Assam — where history meets mythology with a dash of Bollywood-level drama and panoramic views to boot. What's in a Name? ‘Agni’ means fire, and ‘Garh’ means fortress. Put them together and voilà – you get the "Fire Fortress". Built to keep lovers apart (yes, seriously), this hill was supposedly surrounded by perpetual flames, making it the medieval version of a “do not disturb” sign. According to local legends from the Mahabharata, this is where Princess Usha, daughter of demon king Banasura, was imprisoned after she fell in love with Aniruddha, the grandson of Lord Krishna. Daddy dearest didn’t approve (obviously), so he locked her up in this lava-ringed love prison. Because nothing says “no boyfriend” like a fire moat! Mythology + Romance = Must Visit Today, there’s no fire — just stairs (a lot of them!) — that take you to the top where the fort ruins sit like a wise old sage. There are beautifully sculpted statues that narrate the whole Usha-Aniruddha saga, perfect for that “deep in thought” selfie. And the view? Oh, the view! You get a sweeping panorama of the majestic Brahmaputra River, the town of Tezpur, and if you're lucky, a cloud photobomb or two. It's like nature gave Agnigarh a cinematic filter. Fun Facts to Brag About: - Agnigarh is one of the oldest mythologically significant sites in Assam. - It has a spiral staircase pathway with murals and storytelling sculptures – basically, Game of Thrones meets Amar Chitra Katha. - The spot is popular with couples – ironic, considering it was built to prevent romance. Final Verdict Agnigarh is not just a fort, it’s an emotion. Equal parts romantic and rebellious, it's ideal for history buffs, hopeless romantics, and sweaty trekkers alike.

Assam's one of the important historical place. The park was well maintained when we visited this place. Lord krishna is associated with this place. Nice experience. We could witnessed the beauty of river Brahmaputra.❤️
Nitul K — Google review
It is a historical place from which the name of the city “Tezpur” derived. It is said that this is place where the daughter of King Banasura was kept isolated. Later the war between Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva took place, which led the name of the place. Anirudha, the grandson of Lord Krishna was being attracted by the Prince Usha, got married later. King Banasura (who was the devotee of Lord Shiva) arrested him on hearing this news. It led the war between Banasura and Krishna. However being the devotee of Shiva, Lord Shiva came to rescue and it was place of blood when the war had started between Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna. Lord Vishnu came to end this war later. The entry fee is Rs 30 for adults and Rs 10 for minors. However, there is no maintenance, no proper description neither clean properly. The authority should take action to keep the sentiments and mythological beliefs intact. It has a watch tower from where the city and the surroundings, including majestic view of River Bramhaputra can be seen. But still need proper maintenance!

Agnigarh (অগ্নিগড়) is one of the most beautiful and historically rich tourist spots in Tezpur, Assam. The place is deeply connected with the famous love story of Princess Usha, daughter of King Bana, and Aniruddha, the grandson of Lord Krishna. According to legend, King Bana built a fortress surrounded by fire to keep Usha away from Aniruddha, and that is how the place got its name – “Agnigarh” (Fort of Fire). Today, when you visit Agnigarh, you can still feel the essence of those stories through the artistic sculptures and statues built along the pathways. These sculptures beautifully depict the legendary tale, making the visit not only scenic but also culturally meaningful. The hilltop location provides breathtaking panoramic views of the Brahmaputra River and Tezpur town. 🌿 The climb is not very difficult, and the pathways are well-maintained. It’s a peaceful spot to enjoy nature, take photographs, or simply sit and relax. During the evening, especially around sunset, the atmosphere becomes magical. I found the area very clean and visitor-friendly, with enough space to walk and spend time with family or friends. It’s also a great place for students and tourists who want to learn about Assam’s mythology and heritage. Overall, Agnigarh is not just a tourist attraction but a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. A must-visit place in Tezpur for anyone who wants to explore the heritage of Assam. – Priyanuj Hazarika (Local Guide)

The playground is good, and the environment is also good, but if you go alone, you will feel very bored because the whole ground is full of couples, so you may feel lonely. There are also a few families, but mostly there will be couples. If you are a couple, a friend group, or a family, then you can come, but if you are alone, then don't come; you will have a very bad experience. I am telling you this from my personal experience. 😑

Sri Sri Mahabhairab Temple

Mentioned on
1 list
Hindu temple
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
The Mahabhairab Temple, believed to be constructed in the 8th century by demon king Banasur, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple premises are well-maintained with basic facilities and have significant historical and religious importance. The Shiv linga present in the temple is considered lively and growing. Visitors can witness the morning Aarti, which is performed divinely, and feed pigeons that flock around the area.
Tucked away on the tranquil hillocks of Tezpur, the iconic Mahabhairab Temple isn't just a spiritual pitstop — it’s a soul-stirring experience, where mythology, mystery, and mountain breeze come together in poetic rhythm. Dedicated to Lord Shiva in his fearsome Bhairava avatar, this ancient shrine feels like a chapter from an old scripture — one that still breathes. Legend has it, and Assamese grandmothers will happily vouch for it, that King Banasura, a zealous devotee of Shiva and a mythological figure himself, founded this temple. The shivlinga housed here is believed to be one of the largest in India, carved out of a single stone and possibly dating back to the 8th to 10th century CE, though some whisper it’s even older. Fascinating Nuggets to Digest Before You Bow: - The temple's name — “Mahabhairab” — literally translates to the Great Terrifying One, and yet the vibe is soothing, almost meditative. A paradox only Shiva could pull off. - It comes alive during Shivratri, when devotees queue up in serpentine lines (pun intended), and the air is thick with chants, incense, and an unmistakable scent of divinity (and jalebis). - Local lore claims the original lingam was self-manifested (Swayambhu) and that Shiva himself appeared here in Bhairava form to bless his devotee Banasura. - It’s managed today by the State Government of Assam, preserving not just the structure but the legacy it holds for both pilgrims and curious wanderers. My Reverie: There’s something timeless about Mahabhairab Temple — perhaps it’s the whispering pines, the distant bells, or the sensation that you’re standing at a spiritual crossroads where the past and present exchange pleasantries. Whether you're a devout pilgrim or a history buff with a penchant for ancient secrets, this temple offers a slice of serenity with a dollop of divinity. Final Thought: Go for the blessings, stay for the energy. And while you're at it, breathe in that Tezpur air — it's laced with legends.

This place is very close to Bhairabkunda. This place is full of trees and forests. There is a stream of clean water flowing here. You can take a bath here. There are many people who come to Bhairabkunda during picnics. The environment is ruined by the rudeness of some people. Many rude people drink beer and whiskey and break the bottles and throw them in or around the stream. Therefore, it is dangerous to walk barefoot.

My first visit to this man made forest was breath taking, I mean its so dense and full of wild life like deer. It didn't have any wild life safari cause they are just starting up. The community is really nice, they have like tree house and all, and you get to hear sound of the jungle. Really fascinating.

A forest with a history of deforestation followed by afforestation, there's something less wild but equally scenic about a man-made forest. Streams run through the forest that's also know for it's elephants. The roads here are pretty poor and mobile network is relatively zero through most parts of it. There are a few stays available and the location is a popular camping ground during the non-monsoon season. Food and other resources are hard to come by and it's best to stock up on things necessary before coming towards Gethesmane.

Must visit place in Arunachal. 1. Best time to visit: February end to mid of April 2. How to reach: from Guwahati to Tenga then tenga to Eagle Nest is 44 offroading drive 3. Entry fee : NA 4. Guide Fee: INR 4000 to 6000 if you need a birder guide , but be careful while you deal with the guides. 5. Transportation: You can take your own vehicle to rent a SUV (cost 5000 to 6000 full day). But small hatchback and sedans will face difficulties because of bad roads. So SUV or LUV are prefered. 6. Stay inside sanctuary: Bompu Camp and Lama Camp (cost will be very in season, usually twin sharing 6000 per night with normal facilities ) 7. Environment: Dens forest and very cold during winter.

This is a must visit for any bird watching enthusiast. Situated between tenga and misamari in Arunachal Pradesh. Guwahati to Tenga and then onto the sanctuary is the way to travel. There are three camps in the sanctuary that offer accommodation. Lama, bompu and khellong. Hiring an SUV With an experienced driver is recommended as the roads are just jeep tracks in areas The place is beautiful with mist covered mountains and floating clouds and dense forests The elevation decreases as you travel from lama to khellong and the flora and fauna changes accordingly. I have reviewed the accommodation separately

This monastery is located in a very beautiful place. We reached there in the evening, and by the time we arrived, the monastery was almost closed. So, we just took some pictures from outside. It was truly a beautiful sight. From there, we could see a Buddha statue at a distance.

Its a very beautiful monastery. Very quiet and silent place for worshiping Lord Gautam Buddha. It has training and a learning center for studies on buddhism . Students from the age of 5 and above are allowed to take admission here and training.

This monastery located on the upper reaches of Bomdila is also known as Gentse Gaden Rabgyel Lling Monastery. It was built in 1965 by the 12th reincarnate of Tsona Gontse Rinpoche. Found the monastery to be very vibrant and active as it houses a large number of boys and young men who are being imparted training to become lamas. As this monastery is located on an elevated area, it offers an aerial view of Bomdila.

On the way back to Guwahati from Tawang, we decided to stay at Bomdila due low visibility on road. In the morning, we made a small detour to Bomdilla Monastery. Some festivals/ prayers were going on at the morning (8.30 AM). The students there offered us a local tibetan sweet delicacy made out of pasta and yak cheese. Then they offered us salty tea with yak milk. The experience was surreal.

Bomdila Monastery, located in the serene hills of Arunachal Pradesh, is a peaceful and spiritually uplifting place that beautifully reflects Tibetan Buddhist culture. Also known as the Gontse Gaden Rabgyel Lling Monastery, it offers stunning views of the surrounding Himalayas and the Bomdila valley below. The monastery’s architecture is vibrant and intricate, with colorful murals and prayer flags that create a tranquil, sacred atmosphere. Visitors often praise the calmness of the place — it’s less crowded than many other monasteries, making it ideal for quiet reflection. The monks are welcoming, and if you visit during prayer sessions, the rhythmic chants and sounds of the drums are truly mesmerizing. Overall, Bomdila Monastery is not just a religious site but also a cultural gem — a perfect stop for anyone seeking peace, beauty, and a glimpse into the spiritual life of Arunachal Pradesh

Bomdila Monastery, also called Gentse Gaden Rabgyel Lling, is a beautiful Buddhist monastery in Arunachal Pradesh. Built in 1965, it’s known for its peaceful vibe, prayer hall, Buddha temple, and monk school. It resembles the Tsona Gontse Monastery in South Tibet and holds great importance for Mahayana Buddhists.

************ Om Ma-ni Pad-me Hum ***************** Visited Bomdila Buddhist Monastery during my solo trip to Bomdila while staying at the Circuit House. Every evening after working remotely, I would take a 40-minute trek up to the monastery, and it quickly became the highlight of my stay. Perched on top of a mountain, the monastery offers a breathtaking view of the valley below and an atmosphere of absolute peace and serenity. The quiet surroundings, the gentle breeze, and the sound of prayer flags fluttering in the wind created a sense of calm that’s hard to describe. It was the perfect place to unwind, reflect, and find inner stillness after a long day. Truly a must-visit spot in Bomdila — not just for its beauty, but for the sense of peace it brings to the soul.

Sela Pass, located in the border district of Tawang, is a high-altitude pass known for its sacred Buddhist lake and year-round snow cover. The pass holds historical significance as it connects the Tawang district to the rest of the country and was a site of valiant battles during the 1962 war. Visitors can pay their respects at Jaswantgarh War Memorial, dedicated to martyr Jaswant Rawat.
An awe-inspiring destination nestled in the Eastern Himalayas, Sela Pass is nothing short of breathtaking. At over 13,700 feet, the pass offers snow-covered landscapes, pristine views, and an atmosphere so serene it feels almost sacred. But what truly makes Sela Pass special is the silent strength of our Indian Army personnel who stand guard here, enduring extreme cold and harsh conditions to protect our nation. Their presence at such high-altitude posts is nothing short of heroic. It’s humbling to witness their dedication and courage in a region where survival itself is a challenge. The journey through Sela Pass is filled with winding roads, frozen lakes, and patches of untouched snow — every turn offers a postcard-worthy view. Whether you're a nature lover or someone seeking a deeper sense of patriotism, this place will move you. Visiting Sela Pass is not just about the landscape — it's about honoring the spirit of our brave soldiers. Salute to their unwavering duty and sacrifices. A must-visit for every Indian.

Can never get tired of this place and this road. Looks like you are climbing to the skies. Now that the tunnel is there, the pass and lake has become a tourist thing rather than a road people take to Tawang and back. It's good we have the tunnel but nothing beats the experience of this cold and wind at 4000 metres from sea level. A driver's paradise!

It’s a beautiful and chilly place. Sela Pass sits at an altitude of around 13,700 feet. The main Sela Gate is about 200 meters from the pass, and just below it lies the stunning Sela Lake which is surrounded by mountains. Right in front of Sela Pass, there’s a small stall where you can enjoy a warm cup of tea or coffee, cold drinks or energy drinks, some noodles, and a few snacks.
Eshwan S — Google review
I recently visited Sela Pass in October 2025, and it was one of the most mesmerizing places I’ve ever seen. Located at an altitude of over 13,000 feet, Sela Pass connects Tawang with the rest of Arunachal Pradesh and offers a breathtaking view of snow-covered peaks and crystal-clear lakes. The famous Sela Lake, surrounded by snow even in early winter, adds to the magic of the place — it’s truly a photographer’s paradise. The air up there is crisp and cold, and the whole area feels peaceful and surreal. It’s the kind of place where you can simply stop, breathe, and take in the beauty of nature in its purest form. However, the journey to Sela Pass is quite challenging, with winding roads, sharp turns, and changing weather conditions. Drivers should be cautious, especially during snowfall or fog, as visibility can drop quickly. There are very few shops or food stalls near the pass, so it’s wise to carry your own snacks and warm beverages. The temperature can drop suddenly, so wearing proper winter clothing is essential. Despite the tough road, the view from Sela Pass is worth every effort. It’s one of those rare places that makes you feel both peaceful and amazed at the same time. Overall, Sela Pass is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Tawang a stunning blend of natural beauty, serenity, and adventure that will stay with you forever.

Sela Pass, perched at an altitude of approximately 13,700 feet (4,170 meters), stands out as one of India’s most spectacular high-altitude mountain gateways, connecting the Tawang and West Kameng districts in Arunachal Pradesh. The journey to reach Sela Pass is both exhilarating and rewarding, with winding roads that are often sheathed in snow through winter and splashed with greenery during summer. The drive itself, though challenging due to sometimes rough road conditions and rapidly changing weather, is compensated by panoramic views of the majestic Eastern Himalayas and a sense of serene remoteness. The crown jewel of Sela Pass is the tranquil Sela Lake, referred to locally as Paradise Lake, which lies just beside the pass. In winter, the lake frequently freezes over, offering a breathtaking icy spectacle, while in other seasons, its pristine blue waters mirror the open Himalayan skies. The sight of rhododendrons blooming in spring only enhances its allure. The spiritual significance of the area is marked by the presence of over a hundred sacred lakes nearby, cherished by the region’s Buddhist communities. The pass is also steeped in local history and folklore, including the tale of Sela and Indian Army hero Jaswant Singh Rawat, whose bravery is commemorated at nearby Jaswant Garh. There’s a simple army café at the top where visitors can enjoy a hot drink while soaking in the views. For any traveler exploring Arunachal Pradesh, Sela Pass is an unmissable destination—a harmonious blend of stunning scenery, adventure, and cultural heritage.

This is the nature created by God, which does not bother to look at. The lake is so so beautiful. There are tea stalls near the lake. The Sela Pass gate is 150 meters away from the lake. There is an army camp also near the lake.

Sela Pass is one of those places that truly takes your breath away, both literally and figuratively. Located at around 13,700 feet, it connects Bomdila and Tawang and offers absolutely stunning views of snow-covered peaks and crystal-clear Sela Lake. The drive up can be a bit challenging, especially during the colder months, but the scenery makes every turn worth it. When I visited, it was quite busy since it was the holiday season, but once I stepped out and took in the cold mountain air, everything felt peaceful. The frozen lake, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and the quiet stillness all created a sense of calm that’s hard to describe. If you’re traveling from Dirang or Tawang, try to start early to enjoy the sunrise views and avoid traffic. Also, be prepared for sudden weather changes, it can get really cold and foggy in no time. Overall, Sela Pass is not just a place to pass through, it’s a destination in itself, where nature, spirituality, and adventure come together beautifully.

The Jaswantgarh War Memorial is one of the most emotional and inspiring places I’ve ever visited. Located amidst the breathtaking hills of Arunachal Pradesh, near the Tawang–Sela Pass route, this memorial is not just a tourist stop — it’s a sacred place that fills you with pride, respect, and deep emotion for the Indian Army. This memorial honors Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, a true hero of the 1962 Indo-China war. The way the place has been maintained by the Indian Army is simply outstanding — clean, organized, and filled with a sense of reverence. You can actually feel the spirit of bravery and sacrifice here. The soldiers on duty explain the history and story of Jaswant Singh with great respect and emotion, making the visit even more meaningful. Inside the memorial, you’ll see Jaswant Singh’s personal belongings, photos, weapons, and a detailed account of the battle. What really touches the heart is how the army still treats him as if he’s alive — his bed is made every morning, his food is served daily, and his duty roster continues even today. It’s a powerful reminder of the undying bond between a soldier and his regiment. The surroundings are equally mesmerizing — snow-capped mountains, fluttering prayer flags, and calm silence make it a perfect blend of nature and patriotism. The small army canteen nearby offers tea and snacks, and the soldiers’ warmth makes you feel like family. If you’re traveling towards Tawang or coming back from Sela Pass, do not miss stopping here. Spend a few quiet minutes to pay your respects — it’s an experience that will stay in your heart forever. Verdict- A must-visit for every Indian. More than a destination - it’s a feeling, a tribute, and a moment of pure pride. 🙏🇮🇳

Jaswantgarh War Memorial is built in Honor of the Brave Indian Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat. It is located in Nuranang District of Arunachal Pradesh to Pay Homage to Jaswant Singh Rawat, an Indian Rifleman of 4 Garhwal Rifles who stood his ground against overwhelming odds in the 1962 War with China. For 72 grueling hours, he single-handedly inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy before making the ultimate sacrifice. His unwavering dedication became a legend which inspired generations of Soldiers. Jaswant Singh Rawat's courage in facing the Chinese Army led to the establishment of this Memorial at the very spot of his heroic stand. He was posthumously honored with India’s Second-Highest Military Award, the Mahavir Chakra. A Very Lovely Memorial that Evokes Strong Nationalistic Pride and is a Must Visit for every Tourist.
