If you find yourself in Repino, a visit to the Ilya Repin Museum-Estate "Penaty" is an enriching experience that delves into the life of one of Russia's most celebrated painters. This charming location served as Repin's final residence and is where he both lived and passed away. The museum offers guided tours that provide fascinating insights into his artistic journey and the historical context of the area during his lifetime, particularly its transition into Soviet territory.
Couldn't get inside since the tickets booth closes down at 5pm but walking through the park is enjoyable even by itself. I would recommend going there at autumn, its especially lovely this time of the year

This place is about famous russian painter Repin. He lived there for a long time and paint a lot of his pictures. House was destroyed during WW2 and was rebuild again by the photos. Now there are museum and park. Museum excursion will tell about life and work of the painter. Walking in the park allow to feel the soul of that place.
Peter K — Google review
The wooden house was built in 1960 in accordance with drawings, which remained after the fire of 1944. That fire destroyed everything around. The house, which is more than 75 years old, requires significant renovation. There are just several original subjects there, which belonged to Mr. I. Repin. The several small and not well-known pictures by Mr. I. Repin and his students and several units of furniture exposed were taken from Repin's apartment in St. Petersburg; other subjects were brought from different places with the aim to give an impression of the epoch. It was very dark in the rooms, and most of pictures were almost invisible. The visitors, who want to see exposition, are advised to take pocket lights with them. The forest with paths leading to several sights of interest including the grave of the artist and summer theater, surrounds the manor. Unfortunately these paths are not properly lighted and poorly supplied with pointers.
Alexander K — Google review
If you should ever end up in Repino, a visit to the painter Ilya Repin's last home, where he died, and also is buried, is a very interesting experience. Not only is it interesting to learn about the painter, but also to get insight into the history of this area, which became a part of the Soviet Union while he lived and worked here. The place is now a museum, and it is required to take a guided tour to get inside the main building. They have soundtracks during the tour in a bunch of languages. During our visit, we got English guiding, and right behind us they arranged for a visitor from China.

Prioratsky Palace, also known as Priory Palace, is a historic building located in Gatchina, Russia. Built in 1799 by architect N. A. Lvov for the Russian Grand Priory of the Order of St John, it features a distinctive red roof and castle-style architecture. The palace includes a concert hall and is surrounded by a landscaped park with a picturesque Black Lake nearby.
A very interesting building of the time when Emperor Paul was the Master of the Order of Malta.

Landscapes are awesome especially in autumn. But security of the museum was rude and we wasn't allowed to come even inside the yard, because of paid entrance and closed boxoffice.
Evgeny K — Google review
A very small museum, for 10-20 minutes. It's mentioned that paypass can be used to pay for tickets, but they don't have it in fact.

Priory Palace is an original palace in Gatchina (Гатчина), Russia. It was built in 1799 by the architect N. A. Lvov on the shore of the Black Lake (Chyornoye ozero / Чёрное озеро). Constructed for the Russian Grand Priory of the Order of St John, it was presented to the Order by a decree of Paul I of Russia dated August 23, 1799.

The State Museum-Reserve "Gatchina"

Mentioned on
2 lists
Historical place museum
Nature & Parks
Gatchina Palace, one of the largest and most opulent 18th century palace & gardens in Russia, has a museum with fine art, antiquities, and weaponry. It is located near Saint Petersburg.
Very nicely restored new rooms. Audio guide is recommended. Trip down stairs to the passage is fun especially for the children.
Nelya Z — Google review
So impressive with this palace. I went there on autumn 2017. Outside in the morning was so quiet and no signs for tourists where is entrance but Russian pointed over there. Ticket price is 350 rubles for adults. There are 3 floor and 1 basement. Museum keepers was so nice and always try to tell history of this place even my Russian skill is fair.
Pearploy S — Google review
An interesting tour of the main restored halls and the gardens in the courtyard, many exhibits are replicas (which is mentioned by the tour guide), the halls themselves have standard interiors with luxury and lots of furniture. The area in front of the palace is covered with granite chips with a monument to Paul I. In the courtyard there is a monument to Alexander III with a very interesting design, it is worth a look. It's better to come half an hour before the tour to have time to see the armory and basement, since the second part of the tour involves leaving the museum without the possibility of returning.
Lee Y — Google review
The huge palace of Emperor Paul just started to turn into a museum. For a long time there was a naval school. Now museums are much smaller than a quarter of the building, but restoration work is underway. A special impression is left by the private chambers and the office of Emperor Alexander 3. Small rooms and low ceilings contrast sharply with the luxury of the rest of the building.

The Great Gatchina Palace is a palace in Gatchina, Leningrad Oblast, Russia. It was built from 1766 to 1781 by Antonio Rinaldi for Count Grigori Grigoryevich Orlov, who was a favourite of Catherine the Great, in Gatchina, a suburb of the royal capital Saint Petersburg. The Gatchina Palace combines classical architecture and themes of a medieval castle with ornate interiors typical of Russian classicism, located on a hill in central Gatchina next to Lake Serebryany. The Gatchina Palace became one of the favourite residences of the Russian Imperial Family, and during the 19th century was an important site of Russian politics. Since the February Revolution in 1917 it has been a museum and public park, and received UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1990.
Me 1 — Google review
Empress gave this palace to her lover who killed her husband, the emperor. When lover died she gave the palace to her son, who hated her and loved his killed Emperor father. Son became the emperor himself and build a brand new palace-castle where he was killed by his men. Do you still need the GoT if you have real history of Russian Empire?

Dvortsovyy Park

Vegetation
Nature & Parks
Parks
Dvortsovyy Park, a stunning expanse of 143 hectares, is the oldest among Gatchina's parks and offers a delightful escape for nature lovers. Nestled by a picturesque lake, this park features lush botanical gardens, expansive grass lawns perfect for picnics, and an inviting amphitheater.
(Translated by Google) Nice beautiful park. A great place to take a walk with children. The park is quite clean. The area is large, so it will take a whole day to get around it. The Gatchina Palace itself is also very beautiful - it’s worth visiting. And be sure to visit your own garden. Huge carps swim in the Carp Pond) In the park there are tame squirrels - they run up to get the nuts themselves. The only negative is that admission is usually free, but on children’s day they made it paid, thank you for at least letting the children in just like that. Well, the lake is not cleaned - it’s dirty. I understand that money is needed to maintain the park; maybe the management should think about paying a minimum entrance fee on weekends (as in the Central Park of Culture and Culture), and not on Children’s Day.

(Translated by Google) The park is beautiful. We spent several hours in it, not the first time, and not the last. We live nearby. But! I was surprised by the uncut, even neglected lawn, with bald patches of dandelions. I’m not talking about the lawn throughout the park, but where it usually was ideally. The park is not friendly to visitors. Entrance is 150 rubles and there are also paid toilets. 30 rubles each. The toilets themselves are not ideal; there is not much water in the tap or paper to wipe your hands. In a cafe where I bought tea and coffee several times, the saleswoman literally told everyone, why are there so many of you... And this was on Saturday, when in reality there were not many people. Ducks, swans, carps, pigeons and mice are beautiful.

(Translated by Google) A wonderful, amazing park! The Palace Park is the oldest among the Gatchina parks / Prioratsky, Zverinets, Sylvia /. The area is 143 hectares. The main building of the park is the Grand Gatchina Palace. The park does not have the fountain ensembles that Peterhof is rich in, there is no luxurious decoration that amazes in the Chinese Palace of Lomonosov, there is no abundance of pavilions and sculptures like in Pushkin and Pavlovsky parks. Gatchina Park has a special charm - it is the most picturesque! The landscape with many lakes is one of the best achievements of Russian landscape art of the second half of the 18th century. The park is located on the banks of the White and Silver Lakes. Two periods of creation of the park - Orlovsky and Pavlovsky. In the Orlovsky period, in addition to Russian conifers, oaks, maples, larches, vases, willows, ash trees and lindens were planted. The Eagle Column, the Chesme Obelisk, the Echo Grotto and the Octagonal Well for the Underground Spring near the Silver Lake were erected according to the design of the architect A. Rinaldi. During the Pavlovsk period, the Upper and Lower Dutch Gardens, the Botanical Garden and the Private Garden were created. The Stone Bastions, the Forest and Large Palace Greenhouses, the Eagle Pavilion, terraces and stairs, piers, several bridges and gates, the Birch House portal, the Constable Obelisk and the square with parameters and bastions were erected according to the design of the architect V. Brenna. At the end of the 18th century, the talented Russian architect N. Lvov built the Birch House, the Amphitheater, the Bridge - a ruin with cascades, the Priory Palace from rammed earth.

A very lovely cathedral both on the outside and within. For a small donation the workers at the cathedral will let you climb to the top of the cathedral and photograph the view from there. It was a lot of fun. Remember that this is a working church, so be respectful and quiet.

THIS IS NOT the Peter and Paul's Cathedral where the Romanov's are buried (that one is in St. Pet center within the same name fortress on an island). THIS IS the same name Cathedral in Peterhof, around 45 min from the center. It totally differs in style and year of construction from the St. Pet's one. This one in Peterhof is just across the road from the Peterhof summer Palace complex (read that review). It's a beautiful classic Russian style Cathedral built around 1900, almost 200 years after the St. Pet one. It's just by the bus stop that will take you back to center so it's worth visiting its beautiful interiors
Dejan B — Google review
My favorite church of all Russia. It's more beautiful than the church on the spilled blood in St. Peter. And best yet, no line. I just walked right in on a Wednesday. It smells really nice in there and they can bless your crucifix or buy an icon there as well. Praise the LORD JESUS, Amen.
Nick H — Google review
Certainly a very beautiful church. Unfortunately top half of it was under renovation.
Helena B — Google review
The church is located opposite the Peterhof. Most visitors like to visit this red brick. Outside is an orthodox church that so beautiful and look like the Church of our Savior on the Spilled Blood. Its building was damaged during the World War II and closed for years till reopened again after renovation.

When I go there It’s constructing. There’s a small entrance to visit in there.

Awesome The Peter and Paul Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox cathedral located inside the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg, Russia. It is the first and oldest landmark in St. Petersburg, built between 1712 and 1733 on Hare Island along the Neva River. Both the cathedral and the fortress were originally built under Peter the Great and designed by Domenico Trezzini. The cathedral's bell tower is the world's tallest Orthodox bell tower. Since the belfry is not standalone, but an integral part of the main building, the cathedral is sometimes considered the highest Orthodox Church in the world. There is another Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul Church in St. Petersburg, located in Petergof.

Peterhof, also known as Paleizencomplex in Peterhof, is a seafront museum complex located in a former royal palace surrounded by parkland. It is renowned for its numerous fountains and is a top destination for various activities such as water sports, boat rides, kiteboarding, and exploring gardens. The palace itself offers an intriguing glimpse into the lives of ancient inhabitants through its royal rooms and exclusive chandeliers.
This amazing Park and Palace is an expression of Russian Imperial splendor. It was built by Peter the Great as his summer palace. The site is listed as UNESCO World Heritage. As you cross the parking area there is a good handicrafts market, which actually is very good and you must go through while returning from the garden. I visited in early spring, Lush gardens are mesmerizing, with extravagant palace buildings, beautiful golden statues and a cascade of fountains. Vibrant flowers were everywhere in proper layout. At 1 PM, there is some musical show at the backdrop of the palace in front of the golden statues with fireworks and some performance. I visited the place on Saturday; I am not sure the show is daily or only on weekends. We were not able to catch the show as we were not aware of it earlier. We were at the farther end of the park at that time and we reached at the spot when the show was coming to an end, however I witnessed some closing fireworks. This is a must go venue, don’t miss it while visiting St Petersburg.
Zafar K — Google review
Not too expensive and it's really really good, so many fountains. So many views. So much green. But during peak times it can get crowded. And so many people taking photos. The big museum is for additional fee, but even the garden is difficult to visit all in one day.
Ondra V — Google review
Great but a bit smaller than expected. Takes around 15 mins to walk the entire complex on your own, 45 if part of a tour. Summer season still on as of writing, so separate tickets for the garden, then the palace complex for 3,200 RUB total. You need the garden ticket to enter the compound, turn left, then enter the palace building. No line at ticket counters on a weekday 2 PM. Practically empty. Just 3-4 tour groups and they move fast.
Dung Q — Google review
This place is a must see, we had a great time and the weather was amazing. Prepare for long walk all around the park and lots of fountains perfect for the kids.
David K — Google review
expensive because you will need 2 ticket just to go inside and for museum separately as well, long walks and expensive water bottles and food. Must say amazing architecture
Ankita M — Google review
Opulence turned into landscape. The palace feels like it was built just to prove what human hands can do when given no limits. Golden statues everywhere, fountains that move with impossible precision, and that long axis leading straight to the sea, pure theater. Inside, it’s mirrors, chandeliers, and silence heavy with history. Outside, it’s joy and spectacle. You walk away a little dazzled, a little jealous, and completely convinced that beauty can be engineered.
Axel — Google review
Fable-like palace displaying the power and richness of the czars. The lavish interiors and the gigantic gardens with their water-plays are a testament to an era of nearly infinite wealth (for them of course not for the country). Impressive

We were on a cruise thru the Baltic Sea and one of the main stops was in St Petersburg. We had most of the day and had a great all day tour organized by the ship. One of the highlights was the Peterhof Palace and gardens. We had tickets in hand arranged by the cruise tour group. The palace was very nice but the gardens were spectacular. Just amazing and so perfectly maintained.

This place is a must see, we had a great time and the weather was amazing. Prepare for long walk all around the park and lots of fountains perfect for the kids.

expensive because you will need 2 ticket just to go inside and for museum separately as well, long walks and expensive water bottles and food.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to the museums - there were very long queues. Although we went through the queue to the park quickly. If you compare the beauty of the parks with the same Versailles, then Peterhof noticeably wins! In general, we highly recommend visiting!

Morskoy Sobor Svyatitelya Nikolaya Chudotvortsa, also known as the Naval Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Kronstadt, is a stunning Russian Orthodox cathedral constructed in the early 20th century to serve as the main church for the Russian Navy. Although it was repurposed several times over the years, it was eventually reinstated as a place of worship by the Russian Orthodox Church.
Worth visiting 30 minutes on the bus from Peterhof. 1km. slow walk from ิus stop. You may be could not find any better than with exception for St.Isaac Cathedral. Aleksey S — Google review
Really beautiful building with an interesting history, built and paid for by the sailors of Kronstadt, restored back to it's full original splendour. Definitely worth a visit when in St Petersburg. It is a bit of a mission to get there, it is close to Peterhof however.
IGuideU — Google review
The Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas is truly the heart and soul of Kronstadt — a breathtaking masterpiece that perfectly blends spirituality, history, and architecture. From the moment you see its golden dome rising above the city, you understand why it’s often called the “Naval St. Isaac’s Cathedral.” The exterior is majestic, but the real magic begins once you step inside. The interior is filled with shimmering mosaics, marble floors, and intricate icons, all dedicated to the memory of Russian sailors who lost their lives at sea. The atmosphere is both solemn and awe-inspiring. Whether you’re religious or simply love art and history, this cathedral leaves a deep emotional impression. The acoustics are amazing — if you’re lucky, you might even hear the choir during a service. The cathedral stands on Anchor Square, surrounded by naval monuments and museums, which makes it the perfect centerpiece of a day trip to Kronstadt. Tip: Visit in the late afternoon for the best sunlight on the domes and fewer crowds. ⭐ Rating: 5/5 — A must-see landmark and one of the most beautiful churches in Russia.
Savant ' — Google review
This remains a functional church, also with a second floor (no tourist access) meaning the interior is less grandiose and relatively small, however no less ornate than other churches you may visit. Worth a visit of you have some extra time, the most beautiful views are from the exterior with the baby blue facade.
Sourav B — Google review
Definitely worth visiting if you're on travel trip in Kronstadt. It has 3 levels and you can get on every of these levels. I recommend visiting the top level, it is located under the dome and you can observe whole city from there.

Beautiful church. It offers to buy candles and other souvenirs from this church. It is close to parks and the harbor. Definitely worth a visit. Dress modest when visiting. Best is to bring a shawl for ladies, because they require the head to be covered. They provide shawls in case you do not have one. No restroom inside, but there are restrooms closeby, you have to pay though.

Interesting museum.

(Translated by Google) September 2023. The estate itself is under restoration, closed with fences. The park is nothing special except for the red karst caves. Some of them are used for religious purposes for some reason: there are icons, fonts, booths for prayer, etc. Moreover, everything was done cheaply and ugly. It is perceived as visual garbage. The park has a ring path, dirt surface, one bench, and a memorial cross. And many, many signs stating that you need to leave the park during a hurricane) Nothing more. There is parking and a toilet. There is no bicycle parking, no points of sale for food/drinks, no recreation areas, no children's or sports areas, no swings, etc. no, there are no wifi zones or charging gadgets. I hope that after restoration this object will be much more interesting and spectacular than it is now.

The location is good, the estate itself is made of wood and is in poor condition, so it is closed to visitors. The park itself is old, but not as well maintained as it should really be. There is a straight alley and centuries-old trees, yes, they are beautiful and powerful, but everything is overgrown with young trees and bushes, so that one would like to say that this is not a park, but a dense, impenetrable forest. I really liked the cave and springs. Nature truly created a miracle, very fabulously beautiful. I won’t go there for walks with my family and children.

(Translated by Google) Finally, finally, we got ready and got to Rozhdestveno. You can leave your car in the parking lot (next to the estate) And the estate itself is located on a hill, and offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area. The estate is surrounded by a park. The central alley is decorated with centuries-old alleys and oak trees. In the depths of the park there are karst red-colored caves of natural origin. Springs gush out of the rocks. One of the springs is considered holy. They say the spring has healing properties (helps with eye diseases). We, of course, washed ourselves with water from the spring, and even drank a little, albeit from the palm of our hand. But people filled bottles with water. There is even a plunge pool that you can take a dip in (next to the locker room). We climbed through the caves. The weather was gorgeous, the sun was shining. The sky was absolutely incredible. Therefore, first we walked around the park, and then we went to the estate. The Nabokov-Rukavishnikov estate (V. Nabokov’s mother, née Rukovishnikov). The museum recreates the atmosphere of a typical Russian noble estate of the early 20th century. Beautiful living room, living rooms. We restored the kitchen with various utensils in the basement. The estate displays various photos from Nabokov’s albums, household items from the early 20th century, etc. The trip turned out to be interesting and beautiful. But the estate will soon be closed for restoration for three years.

Narva Muuseum is a revered art gallery located in the restored Narva Castle and fortress, surrounded by parklike surroundings. The castle stands on the Narva River, dividing Estonia and Russia. It houses an extensive collection of artifacts showcasing the history of Narva and the castle itself. Visitors can enjoy beautiful views from the top of the castle, with an elevator reaching up to the 3rd floor out of 7. The museum also offers an audio guide and a souvenir coin exchange.
Dare I say this is the most popular and obvious choice of a touristic attraction in the city centre of Narva. The castle itself is impressive, and the exhibitions inside the castle (as the Narva Museum) showcase the history of Narva. I feel nostalgic and upset about how beautiful Narva once was when I looked their displays of old Narva before the WWII. Recollections of the history may vary, but Narva has completely changed ever since. The top of the castle provides a beautiful panoramic view of the Narva river and the surroundings (albeit through small windows as it’s enclosed).

Narva Castle is a beautiful and well preserved historical site that offers a great experience for visitors. The castle itself is impressive, with rich history and stunning architecture. One of the highlights is the Silver Café, which adds a modern and cozy touch to the medieval atmosphere perfect for a relaxing break. The surrounding area is also lovely for a walk, with scenic views of the Narva River and the Russian border just across. It’s easy to get there by car, and parking is conveniently located nearby, making the visit smooth and stress free. Overall, it’s a great place to explore, unwind, and soak in some history. Highly recommended!

A stunning and “powerful” view of the Russian border and fortress on the other side of the river. A beautiful castle which went an extensive and beautiful renovation in recent years. Many parts are accessible. A must visit in this hidden gem!
Elon S — Google review
The Narva Museum easily earns a 5-star rating for its sheer historical significance and imposing presence. Set within the massive Hermann Castle, it offers not only a deep dive into centuries of regional history but also breathtaking views across the river to Russia. The exhibitions are well-curated, balancing medieval artifacts with thoughtful presentations on Narva’s complex past. However, it’s worth noting that the experience involves a lot of stairs — winding stone steps, tower climbs, and multiple levels — so comfortable shoes and a bit of stamina are a must.
Tommaso P — Google review
A beautiful museum, you'll learn about the fortress's history, from the Swedes and Soviets to the present day. I was captivated by the exhibition about the ancient Finno-Ugric peoples, who were destroyed by the Soviets. I highly recommend it!

Fama Centre is a contemporary shopping and entertainment complex located in Narva, built on the historical Fama suburb's site. The area was once an important trading hub in the 17th century. The center offers a mix of shopping, dining, and entertainment options, showcasing a modern side of Narva. It houses various shops including banks, electronics stores, mobile service providers, department stores, furniture outlets, supermarkets, and diverse fast-food restaurants like KFC.
Interesting shopping center, worth visiting if you're in Narva. The layout is quite odd as it's not possible to go through entire center without backtracking. There is a good variety of shops and restaurants. The place has a military theme and it's quite interesting to explore all the items they have on display.

Absolutely lovely park to go and have a walk, a picnic or see a concert. We had never been and were so surprised at how absolutely beautiful this park is and how much elevation there is. The river and spring were so cool to. Completely gobsmacked at this find and we will definitely return. Sidenote: You can also collect linden blossoms here end of June to mid July. Dried linden blossoms are prized in Estonia for their lovely tea, some also make syrups, essential oil, it's used in medicine as well. They are said to have many many health benefits. The park was full of them. Just be sure to be mindful and not break anything. There are also many different nooks and crannies in the park to get lost in nature. Really, so lovely.

Toila-Oru Park is a true gem of Estonia's natural landscape, offering visitors a stunning array of flora and fauna, as well as a rich history and cultural significance. The park's extensive gardens feature a wide variety of trees, flowers, and other plant life that change with the seasons, making it a beautiful and dynamic destination year-round. In addition to its natural beauty, Toila-Oru Park boasts a rich cultural history, having been a popular destination for Estonia's elite for centuries. The park's historic buildings and monuments, including the Toila Sanatorium and the Oru Palace, offer visitors a glimpse into the region's past and its importance to Estonia's cultural heritage. But perhaps most impressive of all is the park's commitment to sustainability and conservation. The park's management team has gone to great lengths to ensure that the natural beauty and biodiversity of the park are preserved for generations to come, making it a shining example of ecological responsibility. Overall, Toila-Oru Park is an extraordinary destination that offers visitors a chance to connect with nature, history, and culture in a truly unique way. Whether you're a nature lover, a history buff, or simply looking for a beautiful and peaceful place to relax, Toila-Oru Park is a must-see destination in Estonia.

Cluster of churches around a 19th-century convent, housing an ancient icon of the Mother of God.
Absolutely fantastic! This monastery is well looked after and has the most beautiful architecture! I would advise anyone to visit it, great experience!!!

The Convent buildings in the walled community are absolutely stunning. It is such a contemplative experience to walk in the grounds. Stop by the small shop and by some of the nuns honey. Support the community, especially since the entrance to the convent is free.!
Jannelle S — Google review
Beautiful and peaceful place. You can visit freely, no tickets required, but since its an active monastery, one must remember to be respectful and not disturb the nuns living there.

Wow, beautiful place and probably must-see destination when visiting the eastern part of Estonia. Prepare yourself to be amazed by the self-sufficient Russian Orthodox community. Please be respectful of their faith and traditions.

Biblical Public loo is dangerously overpowering and rank. It took two days to get the smell out of my clothes and nostrils. In severe need of complete modernisation before the devil itself emerges from the appalling hole in the ground. No joke. Western expectations of the healing waters probably include pure, sparkling, mineral water mystically lit with blue, white and UV LEDs; perhaps a faint whiff of sulphur, reassuring us of the volcanic depths from which this pure, natural water has emerged, accessed through beautifully white tiled and stainless steel changing rooms, gently ushered by glowing, hovering nuns, also in white.... Reality. Stagnant 'stream' with no flow. Large, dark, garden shed covers concrete ramp to small pool in muddy hole. Throughput is human, not water. 5,000 dunked bodies in one small pool gave us mild ear infections and healed, well, nothing. Like the public loos, this facility would benefit from considerable investment. The monastery, churches, and liturgies, however, are stunning.
Philip R — Google review
The story of this spiritual sites dates back to the 16th century but the Orthodox cathedral was built much more recently at the beginning of the 20th century. There are 6 other churches inside the wall dedicated to their own saint. You can have a stroll in the park and get in the cathedral but you must be quiet at all times, there are over 100 nuns on the site. You can buy their honey (it s delicious) and help preserve the site.

Visited the museum on a recent visit to estonia would highly recommend a visit here its informative and very well thought out you are taken into the old mine workings using an original train used for the miners a guide takes you around and explains the various processes with audio translations in many languages afterwards you are free to explore the above ground areas of the mine
Kevan D — Google review
An Impressive and Moving Experience We visited this remarkable mine and were truly touched by the powerful stories of the people who once worked here. It's not just a museum – it’s a place full of history and emotion. We booked a guided tour, which cost €23 per person and was absolutely worth it. Booking is via email. The guide who led us had actually worked in the mines himself, which added a deeply personal and emotional touch to the experience. His stories were honest, moving, and gave us real insight into the life of a miner. The miners quick tour lasted about an hour and was very well organized. We also had a train ride. In addition to the underground tour, there's also an above-ground museum with a wealth of information – we spent about 1.5 hours exploring that part. Tours are available in different languages, which makes it accessible to international visitors. Parking is conveniently located right next to the museum. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and happy to answer questions. The restrooms were clean, and there’s also a restaurant on site offering a good selection of healthy food. Outside, you’ll find impressive mining machines and an old train on display, which adds to the atmosphere. Overall, this visit was much more than just a museum trip – it was an eye-opening and heartfelt experience. Highly recommended!

Nice and interesting museum about the oil shale mining in Estonia. The above ground part tells about oil shale and processing, while the underground part tells about mining, of the oil shale. Often underground tours are in Estonian or Russian, but you can join the group with a free audioguide. The underground part contains a short train ride and many moving machines.
Sander J — Google review
A very unique site, tour and experience! Even a short drive by an underground train included. Recommended to book the tour in advance (as it is only allowed to be toured with a guide underground). Since we were a small group (5 people), we joined a larger Estonian group. The guide spoke Estonian, but we could follow the story in Latvian using audio guides. Highly recommended tour!
Rasa R — Google review
The duration of the guided tour is 1 hour. We applied for the excursion the day before. There is a cafe and a souvenir shop on site.
Wild R — Google review
A very interesting place. The mine part is dark and damp. The underground train is very cramped and noisy but an unforgettable experience (the 3-year-olds enjoyed it also but needed some handholding). The above ground museum is interesting and worth diving into.
Johannes S — Google review
Truly remarkable experience and impressive mining museum. You can visit underground tunnels and see all the soviet machinery. Most of it is in good condition, and the tour guide was a top-notch guy. They provide you with a warm jacket and helmets; I warmly recommend to wear it because it gets chilly and damp down there. They also have a beautiful restaurant area. Additionally, you can rent a 4x4 with a driver and explore the mining slopes and hills like a boss.
Meelis K — Google review
Great place to learn about Estonian oil shale history and see the mine in person. A must see 10/10 in my opinion. PS take closed-toe footwear and warm hoodie, its +8C/46F inside the mine.

AHHAA Science Centre, established in 1997, is the largest science center in the Baltics. It offers an array of interactive exhibits, a planetarium, workshops, and a science theatre with special effects. The center provides an engaging and educational experience for the whole family. Children can enjoy hands-on experiments and various shows while exploring historical medicine collections dating back to 1803.
This is a must visit for a family day out. The exhibits are interactive, hands-on and engaging for visitors of all ages. The cafe is a great spot for lunch with daily specials and a kids menu. There is free parking in the basement. The gift shop has a wide selection. Highly recommended if you in or near Tartu.

We visited with our family and were absolutely impressed. We’ve been to several museums of this type, but this one deserves a full 5 out of 5. The exhibits engaged everyone – both adults and teenagers. There’s a lot to see and do, so we never got bored. We spent 3.5 hours here, and the time flew by. We could have stayed even longer, but unfortunately had to leave. The museum is enjoyable for children of all ages – even the little ones will find plenty to do. Everything is very interesting and well thought out. The only area for improvement would be providing more visual instructions, such as icons or pictures showing what to do or where to press. There’s also a café on site – we didn’t try it, but it’s great to have the option for a break. I would happily visit again.

Nature & Parks
The Botanical Garden of the University of Tartu is a delightful retreat for plant enthusiasts located in the heart of Tartu. The garden offers guided tours to visitors, showcasing a research base alongside riverside park housing greenhouses, sculptures and exotic plants from all over the world. Plant labels and informative plates are placed throughout the park providing an educational experience. The tranquil setting offers beautiful natural and man-made views with sculptures from various Estonian artists scattered throughout.
We visited on a summer weekday, and there were no queues or crowds - just a peaceful walk. The outdoor area is free to explore, and the indoor botanical garden costs 6€, which was totally worth it. However, it’s hurtful to see the turtles “living” indoors confined to such a small space. This really needs to be fixed.

Beautiful and huge place that is not marketed enough! If you really want to see everything I would recommend reserving at least 3h for the whole place inside and out ( the outside area is huge). We came here by chance. Come here even if you are not that big plant/flower person.

The Kissing Students sculpture and fountain is a must-visit symbol in Tartu, Estonia. The bronze statue depicts two students kissing under an umbrella, representing everlasting love. It's a popular spot for lovers and newlyweds to visit, with traditional Estonian weddings often taking place there. Designed by Mati Karmin, the composition also functions as a fountain.
The statue sits directly in front of city hall, and in winter time is surrounded by an ice skating rink. A very busy and lively place during the winter months.

Tartu City Government is a must-see attraction, especially during the festive holiday season. The Neoclassical and baroque style of the town hall makes it one of the most magnificent in the world. Its classic and charming interior, along with its wide reception rooms, preserves the history of Tartu. The building's majestic appearance dominates Town Hall Square and adds to the medieval charm of the city.
One of the most beautiful and magnifecent town halls not only in the Baltic States but also in the whole world (seriously). Built in a Neoclassical and baroque style, it is well-preserved over time. It is impossible to miss it out during your stay in Tartu and I would say it is worth visiting the town hall during the ooen days. Also it perfectly correlates with the town hall square, and together they make amazing appearence of a medieval town. It's the reason why Tartu is so perfect.
Stanilla — Google review
At the western end of Town Hall Square stands Tartu's elegant Town Hall. Built between 1782 and 1789 after the Great Fire of Tartu, it is the third town hall to be built on this site. The neoclassical design, with rococo and baroque elements, is the work of German architect Johann Heinrich Bartholomäus Walter. The tower houses a carillon that can be played daily.

Valmiermuižas alus darītava

Brewery
Food & Drink
Valmiermuižas alus darītava is a unique countryside brewery and restaurant located outside the town. The cozy atmosphere of the place resembles a countryside house, offering a spacious restaurant and a shop where visitors can purchase local goods such as bio cosmetics, cheese, sweets, beer, wine, strong spirits, and souvenirs. The restaurant prides itself on using seasonal products to create high-quality dishes dominated by vegetables. Visitors have praised the delicious food and accommodating staff.
The atmosphere of the place is really good! I loved their tables outside with nice surrounding. The service was one of the nicest I’ve experienced in Latvia. Burger was good (not the best for this price but still good). The variety of beer is awesome. There’s also a shop with their product where you can buy pretty cool things.
Valeria S — Google review
Since we didn’t have much time, we just checked out the shop at the brewery and took a walk around the area. The shop offers a good selection of beers, but also sells other drinks, including a very tasty rhubarb lemonade. The surroundings are well-kept and welcoming.
Kasia C — Google review
We stopped off at the restaurant at the Valmiermuiža Brewery near the Estonian boarder on the return leg of our day trip from Riga, the capital of Latvia, to the seaside town of Pärnu on the South West Coast of Estonia, as it was the first Latvian beer we tried and we really enjoyed it. My wife had the pork chop on the bone with mashed potatoes, salad and vegetables for her main course and I had the grilled chicken skewers with drained yougut sauce, tomato & cucumber salad, pickled vegetables and what appeared to be a Fritatta egg waffle? She had 0.3l of our favourite Valmiermuiža Amber Lager and had 0.5l of the non alcoholic beer, which was virtually no different in taste to her beer, with our meal. I ordered the strawberry cheese cake for my desert and was surprised to see it was a deconstructed cheese cake when the waiter brought it out to our table, as I'm not a big fan of them. However, it had very tasty individual elements, which I did enjoy. When I asked the waitress for a cuppa black tea with some cold milk to go with my dessert, she told me they only served natural herbal, mint or fruit teas. After a short discussion I decided to try the Linden flower tea with a splash of honey, which was surprisingly very nice and refreshing🫨 We enjoyed our meal on one of the outside tables, basking in the hot late evening sun. The food was exceptional and it was great value at 50EUR.

This is a unique place outside the town, which has it's own cozy atmosphere of the countryside house. There is a brewery building and a spacious Restaurant, as well as a shop, where you can buy some local goods - Bio cosmetics, cheese, sweets, beer and wine, some strong spirits and souvenirs. The prices at the restaurant are worth the quality of the food, because they make everything from the seasonal products, so vegetables definitely dominate in the menu. We tried three different dishes and their beer ice cream - everything was fresh and delicious, and the waiters can also advise you some beers to pair with the food. Don't miss the chance to use such an opportunity! Even though the service is quite slow, it doesn't really matter, because there are many things to do there, walk around, enjoy the sun or a warm summer evening.

Cēsis Castle

Mentioned on

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Cēsis Castle is a captivating medieval structure that encompasses a museum showcasing original fin-de-siècle interiors. The castle grounds are home to the remnants of the ancient Livonian castle, destroyed by Ivan the Terrible in 1577, and an 18th-century manor house. Visitors can explore one of the original castle's towers with a candle-lit lantern, while the newer building features elegant rooms once occupied by German counts and various exhibitions related to the castle complex.
Pretty nice! I wen there yesterday(22/05/25) and they were restaurant 2 towers, so basically just 2 towers is working. But still, with small acts, it made my experience really cool. They give you a lantern to enter the darkest parts, where the fire extinguishers are, it was placed in a kind of wooden box, making the fire extinguisher not so visible and giving a rustic feel. Few/almost no items on display and succinct information, but for some reason, more because of the small acts, I really liked it and highly recommend it.
Lucas P — Google review
Marvelous medieval castle. Kind small, but walking inside would be up to aprox 2 km. if try to visit all corners 🤣 They give candle lantern for some authentic feeling while walking through dark places inside, and that's super nice. There is a narrow staircase and with some other narrow aisles, so need to be careful. In one of the tower shows some video about the history of this castle - it is quite short but interesting. Maybe in the summer whey could work a little longer, not till 18 h. The price for adults - 10€. You can pay by cash or card. Worth to visit. Also, don't forget to visit also castle park.
PJ L — Google review
A very interesting medieval castle, it takes easily few hours to explore all the corners and towers because it is so captivating! The show in the west tower about the history was done so well, and the lantern with a real candle contributed a lot to the atmosphere, it was nice to have no electric lights. I recommend this amazing time trip.
Petra K — Google review
Wow, this is really awesome place to visit! it remains the medieval castle in Latvia. You can learn how the castle was built and invaded by foreign countries from the historical museum too. For the castle and its two tower tour, they offer you a medieval lamp to stroke around even in deep dark area(believe me there are certain area really black out and cold). We were kind of worried about a very short candle can last for the enough time we'd visit to the two towers and the jail at the very bottom, but it turned out to be ok. Worth of visit!! - note for those who would not understand Latvia language, there are some sheets of papers for the guidance but we took some photoshots as there were far too many things to feel and learn from the castle. Very beautiful place! We used CATA bus from Riga, it took us about 1hr and 50min and 5.32Eur one way. It was very convenient to use bussystem reservation system even for foreigner(s).
Mio M — Google review
Rugged and intimidating! Cēsis Castle may be "only" a ruin, but it still exudes an intimidating robustness. Schloß Wenden, the original German name of Cēsis Castle, is one of the most iconic and best preserved castles in Latvia. In the autumn of 1206, during the Baltic Crusade, the Wends converted to Christianity and became allies of the crusaders. In 1208, the Livonian Brothers of the Sword moved in with the Wends in their hillfort and fortified it with a stone defensive wall, and although the fortress is described as "the smallest in Livonia", it withstood repeated attacks by the Estonians and Russians. In 123 or 1214, the Brothers of the Sword built a new stone castle next to the hillfort. In 1237, Cēsis Castle passed into the hands of the Livonian Order, a branch of the Teutonic Order, and became the seat of the Master of the Order. Extensive reconstructions and extensions followed, making Cēsis Castle one of the largest and mightiest castles of the Teutonic Order. With the dissolution of the semi-autonomous Livonian Order in 1561 and subsequent sieges, the castle's decline began. The siege of 1577 by Ivan IV the Terrible became famous for the mass suicide of the castle's 300 defenders. After the castle came under direct control of the King of Sweden in 1681, his soldiers wreaked havoc in the castle. It seemed as if they were plundering rather than defending it. In the first years of the Great Northern War the Russian troops demolisd Cēsis Castle further. In the centuries that followed, nature had free rein to bury the castle in its own rubble. In 1760s the former gatehouse was rebuilt as a manor house, the so-called New Castle. In the 1830s the castle park was laid out at the foot of the ruins, and the first safety repair works were carried out. With the reconstruction of the roof of the West Tower the first serious restoration works began in 1903. Major conservation works were undertaken starting from 1930s when Cēsis Castle became popular as a tourist attraction. Today the castle remains a popular and educational destination, which is definitely worth a visit!

The most interesting castle in the Gaujas natural park. Partially reconstructed castle based on the original layout, it host an interesting museum about Livonian and more recent history. Cool the ascension to the main tower wit the aid of a candle lamp !

Kristen W — Google review
I was startled when someone greeted me and offered a lantern before entering the castle. Inside was terribly dark, and the spiral staircase was the worst. Well, I experienced how people in the medieval life without electricity. But overall, this castle was amazing. In one underground, there was a visualisation of people who were thrown into the underground prison telling their story. In other rooms, you can discover the audio storytelling of how people 400 years ago lived inside that castle before, and in the end, they abandoned it.

St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cesis is a significant medieval church located outside of Riga, Latvia. Built in the 13th century, it still serves as an active Lutheran church and boasts a rich history. The church facade is awaiting restoration, but the community remains vibrant and engaged. Visitors can explore exhibitions inside and admire impressive features such as the tombs of the Masters of the Livonian Order and miraculously preserved stained glass with the Latvian coat of arms.
Nice old church of Cesis. For a donation you can climb up the Tower and enjoy the nice view. Absolutely worth it

Pretty, very old, church with a terrifying (fun) option to tour the bell tower. The church is pretty, but let's be honest - all churches from that era are. For mere 2€ you can take your life in your hands and climb the stairs of the ~65m bell tower for a view. Most of the thrill comes from navigating the near-black steep staircase on your way up. Still, I enjoyed it.
Rich B — Google review
It's OK at max. Maybe, if you stretch your visit might be able to stay 15 minutes inside. Although, that is not counting climbing the stairs. But in the church itself there is nothing that you would not find in most other churches as well. So, it will be a run trough visit at most. Ah, almost forgot, the glass in lead windows are actually not half bad at all.

Sights & Landmarks
42ha museum park about Latvian history & culture, with sculpture park, folk song events & a castle.
A visit to this castle is definitely worth it! Parking is easy and costs around 3€. Just give your license plate number at the ticket counter when buying your ticket. Entry for adults is €8, which is fair considering what you get to see. The castle itself is fascinating and full of history. The real highlight is the tower: The climb is a bit of a workout, but reaching the top is absolutely rewarding. From above, you’re treated to sweeping views of the Gauja River and the surrounding landscape. Around the castle, a small park area invites you to stroll and explore. As of September 2025, there are construction works on the grounds, but they don’t really take away from the overall experience.

A truly peaceful and picturesque place. The castle itself is modest, but the surrounding gardens are stunning — beautifully designed with thoughtful planting and a perfect harmony of colors and textures. Walking here feels like stepping into a living painting, a real moment of serenity. Huge compliments to whoever created and maintains this landscape!

We visited in November. Turaida castle is really worth visiting. When you arrive to a parking lot, there are plenty of spots to park. You can pay for it in the museum which is like a minute away and you don't have to go back to put it in your car, just take it with yourself, it costs 2€. The ticket for the castle was just 6€ which is honestly not much, we saw many castles in different countries which where not that worth as this one and were more expensive. Except of the castle you can visit many other places and building here, like the church, the souvenir shop or the jewelry shop which offers plenty of beautiful hand made jewelries. Turaida castle itself is right now in reconstruction but was really beautiful. You can go inside every door which you can find, meaning that you can see plenty of expositions with stuff found during excavations, see some photographies, old armors, go up in the tower to see the whole castle and it's surroundings. The whole place is quite wast so you can spend there hours walking around, enjoying the atmosphere.

Beautiful castle with stunning views from the tower. Plenty areas to explore, many old building with a person in each building to explain more details, great information too. There are parks and pathways to explore. Easy access to toilets. And we were luck as there was live music concert on the stage next to castle.

Our group of 11 travelers from 5 countries journeyed to the castle complex Today. The guided tour from the entrance through the church as the guide told the story of Rosa de Turaida fave full delta to the castle. The small museum shows the reconstruction of the castle that allows visitors to climb 139 steps to the top for a va race point of the complex and the greenery

One of the most beautiful castle in Europe. If you want to see nice castle with beautiful park, i recommended Turaida. Look at my photos of environs. Very nice :)

Nice castle to visit plenty of info and amazing view. The exhibition carries on in all the other buildings around the park (church, little houses…) - make sure to save enough time to visit the whole park and all these different exhibitions, it’s a lot to take in but it’s worth it.

In case you're planning to visit Turaidas Castle for the first time DO NOT follow your google maps. Instead take the parking spot on the 'mountain' (if you're driving a car) and cross the street to get tickets in the Museum entrance. You can pay by parking at the Museum register (same place where you can get tickets). Also the cost for tickets change twice a year — once in Autumn and once in a Spring.

The Castle of the Livonian Order in Sigulda is a 13th-century castle with restored walls, offering gate and tower climbs as well as guided tours. Built by Bishop Albert of Riga, it suffered heavy damage during the 16th-century Livonian War. The stone ruins have been fitted with stairs and wooden walkways, providing a lookout point with stunning views of the surrounding river valley.
Loved wandering around the ruins and getting incredible views from the tower. Super cheap entry. Not crowded at all. Placards have explanations in English too.

A great medieval castle. We bought a family ticket for only 5€ and it was definitely worth it! The castle is a nice showcase of medieval gothic architecture. You can access two towers and one of the walls, from which there is a nice view of the town and surrounding nature. Around the castles you can find information checkpoints, which offer insight into the castles history from its founding by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword in 1207 to the most recent renovation. There is a lot of places where you can just sit and soak up the atmosphere. Staff is friendly.

This place is a must visit when in Latvia/ Riga! Easy to visit with a 1hr train ride. The walk from the train station is beautiful and much scenery to see along the way. The castles themselves are legit. Kid and family friendly. Feels as if you traveled back in time 🙏🏽

We had a day trip and were presently surprised at how near the castles were to the train station, 10 minutes walk. You get value for money here as there are 2 castles on the same site ,the old and the new. They have some lovely independent shops on site selling local ,and handmade products, do try the Hot Raw Cacao .

North of Sigulda, on a small rocky plateau that rises some 70 metres above the Gauja River valley, stands the impressive ruins of the Livonian Order Castle. The castle was built in 1207 by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, the knightly order that was founded to bring about the conversion of the Latvians, Livonians and Estonians (by means of a crusade). These Brothers of the Sword were not the most obedient knights, as they regularly clashed with Bishop Albert of Riga (whose castle -Turaida Castle- can be seen on the other side of the Gauja River). The order was dissolved by the Pope in 1237, after only 35 years, and was incorporated into the Teutonic Order in the form of a separate branch, the Livonian Order. Since 1432 Sigulda Castle was the residence of the Land Marshal of the Livonian Order, the second highest officer of the order. In the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries, war and destruction alternate with peace and reconstruction, until the castle is finally no longer restored and from the early 19th century it is cherished as a romantic ruin (albeit with some reinforcements and adjustments). The 20th and 21st centuries are mainly characterized by historical and archaeological research, and renovations to protect the ruin from decay. The Sigulda Medieval Castle is therefore an interesting and beautiful ruin that you should definitely visit!

Worthy a stop if you are in the neighborhood, otherwise not worthy the trip. The new castle is a modern residence, the old one partially scenic ruins used (as it was the case today) for event and cocnerts

Great place to visit, also had cafe and ice-cream shop. Multiple little units for clothing, jewellery, leather, woodwork and pottery. Was great to look at options and at a wide range of prices.

Gutman's Cave

Nature & Parks
Caverns & Caves
Compact cave in sandstone rock displaying inscriptions dating from the 17th century.
Really interesting cave, there are lots of carvings on the walls that date back to 1800’s. There is also another smaller cave if you keep walking. The area around is also nice and a good place for lunch or a walk. Free and no ticket needed.
Rachel T — Google review
Large, old and sad. Gutman Cave is the largest cave in the Baltic States, not quite in depth (18.8 metres), but in entrance (12 metres wide and 10 metres high). The cave was formed at the end of the last ice age, when meltwater eroded its way through the sandstone some 10,000 years ago. Gutman Cave is one of Latvia's oldest tourist attractions, with inscriptions dating back to the 17th century. It is still a popular tourist destination, so it can get busy at times. It is also the location of the sad end of the Rose of Turaida. For hikers, the cave (and the entire area) is a great destination or stopover.

We visited Gutman’s Cave in the evening, and it turned out to be a great decision. There were no other tourists around, which made the experience feel calm and almost magical. We had read that the place can get very crowded during the day, so going later allowed us to enjoy it at our own pace without the usual hustle. The cave itself is interesting to see — not particularly large, but it's steeped in history and legend, which adds a special charm. The walls are covered in old inscriptions and carvings, some of which date back centuries. It’s worth spending a little time reading about the stories and myths associated with the cave before you visit. The area around the cave is part of a beautiful park with many well-marked walking trails. It's a great place for a peaceful walk in nature, and there's plenty to explore. The surrounding forest and riverside paths make it ideal for a longer hike or just a relaxed stroll. Parking near the cave (200 meter) costs €2.50, but when we went, the office was closed and the barriers were open, so we didn't have to pay. This might not always be the case. All in all, Gutman’s Cave is definitely worth a visit, especially in the evening if you want to avoid the crowds.

Took the cable car and walked down. Wish we'd taken full day to walk and discover all the wood area before reaching the cave. It was a really sad story about the cave but what a magnificent place

It who was an interesting place, it's only a small cave with a lot of inscriptions, Dennis was a walk around the park it was not worth the one hour drive.
Joseph T — Google review
We hiked to the largest cave in Latvia to enjoy the natural formation. Sadly, several people have chosen to carve their initials or names in the stone to detract from the natural beauty. These engravings become part of the cave’s history now Worth the stop on a hike.
Toni T — Google review
Cool cave and very accessible from road without any ascent or climbing. I walked here from train station, takes about 20-25 minutes with the highest staircase I've ever seen. Not far from the castle.

The place is really beautiful. The parking costs 2 € per hour there but it’s free at the other places in the city, so it’s better to walk a bit. Lot of touristic equipments.

Access gravel road is not the best and you have to pay parking, but the area is kept nice with good views.

Very nice place with many wooden paths. We experienced a beautiful sunset at this place. If you come with a car there is a paid parking lot: 2€ per one hour.

Not crowded and nearly perfectly clean. There's not much space for any big beach activities, but it's fantastic if you're looking for a nice, peaceful time.

beautiful scenery of the river Inčupe flowing into the sea, the path is well maintained and offers panoramic views of the area.

Public beach, not crowded, but there are no toilets. Overall, the beach is clean and well-maintained, but there are only a few small spots that offer shade. Therefore, if you want shade during the day, bring a sun umbrella with you.

Another amazing beach walk. You are walking along the beach on the wooden path with the option to come down to the actual beach. There's a children's playground. The view is spectacular.
