Noirmoutier Castle

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Noirmoutier Castle is a family-friendly attraction that offers an hour-long exploration of its intriguing exhibits and impressive architecture. The top of the castle provides an excellent vantage point to admire the island's scenic beauty. Situated near the town center, visitors can conveniently explore nearby shops and dining options, as well as the picturesque port within walking distance. The castle also narrates the history of the island, making it a fascinating destination for those interested in delving into France's past.
Beatifully restored castle overlooking the river which supplied water for the castle moat. The courtyard is free and you can pay to enter the manour house. Lots of free parking nearby
Ewan B — Google review
A good day out only takes about 90 minutes to go around the castle we went on a Tuesday and there was a craft market in one of the town car parks
Phillip D — Google review
A relatively small castle but interesting with wonderful views from the top. The neighbouring church of Saint Philbert is also well worth visiting.
Peter E — Google review
Well worth paying to get in to see the castle interior. The museum displays are excellent! It’s great to just walk around the castle courtyard.
Fr E — Google review
We visited the inner courtyard as the main keep was unfortunately closed at the time we visited. Used Google translate to read the visitor noticeboards and found the references to HMSMaidstone very interesting.
Paul S — Google review
It is a nice place to visit. Kid friendly and takes about an hour to go around. There are interesting exhibits and of course the building itself is also worth seeing. From the top there is an excellent view of the island. The castle is close to the town center which allows shopping and dining very close by and in a short walk there is the port, which is also worth seeing.
Ferenc B — Google review
Lovely place to visit especially for the view at the top. The castle and the islands history is told throughout. I don't speak very good French but I did understand what happened there. It was nice to have a history lesson of this part of the beautiful France.

You can not go in with dogs but nice to enjoy a game of chess in the courtyard

L'île aux Papillons

Mentioned on

Greenhouse
Nature & Parks
L'île aux Papillons is a tropical greenhouse located near La Gueriniere, offering the opportunity to discover numerous butterfly species from around the world. The butterflies freely roam in a vast flowered greenhouse, which is the largest in France. Visitors can observe the complete life cycle of these flying insects, including some births. The visit takes about 1 to 1.15 hours and it's recommended to dress lightly due to the warm and humid environment inside the greenhouse.
Took a spin out to see the butterflies because the weather wasn’t the best, three kids enjoyed it very much. We walked around the loop three times to take it all in. Seen different types of butterflies each time. Only issue was the price to feed the fish 50cents for a kids handful but didn’t take much away from the experience we had. Bird area was nearly missed but when we found it was nice to get close to the birds. Would recommend for a wet day or a short trip.
Aaron ( — Google review
Interesting place, highly recommended for a rainy day. Not too big, so conveniently can be seen with a whole family. Can be a bit crowded. There is also a bird house. The area is not too exciting, but a short drive takes you to a mall and there are salt production places around to visit.
Ferenc B — Google review
It was a lovely experience especially for the kids. Butterflies kept landing on my son's red cap to his immense enjoyment. There's a pool of friendly Koi Carp who think you're there to feed them, a butterfly hatchery, a pool of Goldfish, a tank of Red Bellied Piranha and Chinese Quall wondering everywhere. You could walk through very quickly and miss loads of things. My advice is take your time, read the plaques, oh and wear a red cap.
Dave A — Google review
A lovely experience with numerous types of exotic butterflies flying around and perching on flowers and fruit feeding stations, the carers of the numerous types of butterflies were so stunning and we were blessed to have butterflies landing on us on Most of the information notices are in English and in French. There are other attractions within including a piranha tank and a bird aviary, plus also a video presentation that we did not watch. The facilities including the reception and the toilets are modern and clean and it’s a real pleasure to visit this wonderful attraction. Visitor numbers were moderate on a September Monday. Refreshments unlimited to a modest selection of soft drinks and a very small selection of ice creams and ice lollies.
Pete S — Google review

Pass. du Gois is a unique road that connects Noirmoutier island to the mainland, but it's underwater twice a day during high tide. The causeway is about 4.5km long and can only be crossed just twice a day either side of low water. It used to be the only access to Noirmoutier until 1971, aside from a passenger ferry from Pornic.

Very interesting visit. The guide spoke in both French and English for us which was great. Both educational and entertaining!

This is a great place to visit. I feel it might be a family run business. The staff are all so nice. We only have a little bit of French and each of them spoke perfect a english. Tour of the windmill is half hour to 40 minutes and the milliner is so knowledgeable. Tour was in French but he kept us in the loop by translating it to English. Lovely crepes and coffee after in a georgous setting. It was exactly what I had imagined rural france to be. Tour is very cheap and food is very reasonably priced. A wonderful experience all round. A must visit if in the area.
Patrick G — Google review
Fun visit in such an historical and unique place! The owner is quite the tour guide and is worth every penny. Do not miss the visit, the crepes to eat before or after and some goodies to take home.
Caroline — Google review
I've seen plenty of windmills in pictures and documentaries. But it's still kinda cool to see the inner workings up close and personal. I recommend stopping by if you're already passing through the area.
Bryan Y — Google review
Free to go in shop and crepes are good and reasonable price. Touring is 4 -5 Euros so didn't do that.
C R — Google review
Excellent little tour of the windmill and sheds outside containing various artifacts relating to the milling process. We had tea and crêpes in the shop while the more able went up into the mill. If you are not good on your feet you may find this part difficult but the rest is easy. Shop provides seating and a selection of drinks and some food as well as the mills flour and associated goods. Well worth a visit but check the opening times.
Frederick H — Google review
It looks nice but we didn't see it inside because it was closed.Special timetable during the winter.
Crisstina M — Google review
Stunning windmill that is well worth a visit. The owner gave a guided tour with very good spoken English. Really interesting stories about the area and how windmills came to be redundant over time. Highly recommended.

Planète Sauvage is a wildlife park located to the southwest of Nantes, offering a unique experience for visitors. The park features a safari area where guests can embark on an exciting journey and capture stunning photos of various animals. Additionally, there are marine shows with dolphins that provide entertainment for all ages. Visitors can explore an African area and stroll along a raised walkway through a monkey habitat, immersing themselves in the natural surroundings.
Incredible safari park and so much more. Came a couple of years ago on my own with 4 kids under the age of 6. Very easy to manage as the safari part is done in your own car and you can take as much time as you wish. Then the dolphin show is nice: short and impressive. The island with makikata's is a cute experience.
Claire L — Google review
Love this place, returned here after 15 years. Took a trip down memory lane with my wife. We holidayed in France for a number of years when our children were small. Hasn't changed much, still a great day out.
Mark R — Google review
Nice park. The animals have spacious areas and the different zones where you drive through give a good feeling how they live in the wild. Animals look well cared for. The duration of the car ride within the park (10km trip) is enough to be entertained but not too long for the kids to get bored. So good spot. The park area where you can walk has some overlap with the things you have already seems from the car and the paths are a bit muddy. Facilities are average. The prices are high with nearly 10 euro for a take out panini which is heated in the grill but was still frozen inside and the taste average. So bring your own food would be a good tip. Toilets are not on the quality level you would expect for a park with this price tag. Improvements can certainly be made on those areas Overall, the vibe is good and people working there are friendly. 4 stars.
Maintains — Google review
We visited Planète Sauvage in June, and it was a great experience! This zoo offers a unique concept where you can explore part of the park by car, just like on a safari. Along the drive, we saw many animals roaming freely, including giraffes, zebras, lions, antelopes, camels, and rhinos, which made the experience really special. It would be even better if there were staff monitoring the safari track more regularly, as some visitors tend to stop for too long, causing small traffic jams. This can be a bit unsafe, especially when surrounded by large animals. The rest of the park is well maintained and accessible, so people with reduced mobility can move around comfortably. There’s also a restaurant and snack area on site, offering convenient meal options, but for those who prefer bringing their own food, there are dedicated picnic areas where you can relax and enjoy your lunch outdoors. We also enjoyed the seal show, which was entertaining and well-organized, great for families and children. Overall, Planète Sauvage is a fun and educational day out, combining both safari adventure and classic zoo experiences. Highly recommended for families, animal lovers, and anyone looking for something different to do near Nantes!
Desi M — Google review
Great day out with the whole family as a group of 12 including 5 children. Plenty to do and see. We paid the extra to do the Safari 4x4 Truck ride. Lasts around 2-3 hrs with a break in the middle at the halfway point. Shops and cafes on site. Highly recommend the Dolphin show. Very impressive and a nice reminder how nice nature can be.
Chris — Google review
Fantastic place, with a 10km! drive through. The walkable area is somewhat small but has a nice variety of animals.

Miroir d'Eau, located near Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne in Nantes, is a stunning attraction that offers different experiences throughout the day. During the daytime, the large water surface reflects the castle creating a mesmerizing sight. At night, the fountains light up with colorful displays, adding to its allure. It's a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, offering a great place to relax by the water or enjoy a picnic on the grass.
Really cool place during the day where the large area of water acts as a mirror in which the castle is reflected. At night, the fountain displays all kinds of beautiful combinations of colors and patterns. A must see when in Nantes!
Anders M — Google review
Came here to take photos of the reflection but it’s dry
Yiming M — Google review
Great place for the kids. Especially when exploring the city this breaks up the trio and allow them to be free, especially cool down on the hot day. The water empties and refills automatically which is great. There are some jets that also come on where the kids can walk through. Loads of people here under the shade of the trees and an ice cream truck also serving ice creams.
Paul C — Google review
Pretty, although the fountains were only on the first time we saw it.

It's been already four years that I've been living in Nantes and I don't get tired of this place. Lots of people, kids and the castle just in front of it. Great place to sit in the grass and drink a beer with your friends.

Scenic Railroads
Vélo-Rail is a unique and fun family activity that involves riding a manually propelled 5-seater pedal cart along an old railway line from Commequiers to Coex for seven kilometers before returning. It's an engaging experience where everyone works together to move the cart, making it particularly thrilling for train or car enthusiasts. While physically demanding, with at least three adults recommended, it offers the opportunity to take turns pedaling and resting. The journey takes around 1.
A great morning spent riding the rail's with the family. €27 for a little over 2 hours is great value.
Michael R — Google review
14km ride on a converted rail truck along the tracks. Not a massive effort but did get a sweat on towards the end of the first leg as it was up a reasonable gradient. Lovely time with all the other riders. Was surprised to get a rousing cheer at the start /finish point. Well worth the efforts but be aware there are no toilet facilities at the halfway turn around point.
Peter R — Google review
Magnificent experience! You must do this. You set off all "cars" at once spaced out a bit then turn round at the far end. It takes between 1.5 and 2 hours depending on how sportive you are!
Stephen B — Google review
After about 10 years visiting this area finally ticked this off . Good orientation, bit of fun for all but basically a straight track through woodland, and not much to see.
Marcus W — Google review
Fantastic couple of hours cycle as a family. 14km split in 2. Not too hard work and beautiful views through the country side.
Rea P — Google review
Velo Rail is fun, unique and interesting for the whole family. We were a family of four, with 8 and 3 year olds. It was interesting at first but the novelty wore off and they got bored; and my wife and I were exhausted before after half the first leg of peddling. We reached the turning point, and most people ahead of us were already waiting, so we had little time for rest. For the second leg of the journey back, we decided to change tactics - what I call an "alternating 10 sec sprint between riders with a 20 sec sandwich rest" (if I could patent this technique, I would! It seem to work wonders on the leg back). The tactic basically involves each rider cycling hard for 10 seconds, then letting the velo bike run on momentum for 20 seconds, then the other rider rides hard for 10 seconds, then rest for 20 seconds, and this continues back with the other rider, etc. This method effectively gives each rider 30 seconds of rest in between, while maintaining the momentum of the vehicle. It will conserve energy and increase efficiency. We asked our children to be the coach/coordinator - to time/swap the three riding technique. This kept them occupied and motivated. Comparatively, for our first leg where we faced exhaustion, both riders were peddling furiously without efficiently sharing the workload and not necessarily going much faster. In short, be prepared for excitement, exhilaration and some exhaustion (if you have the right technique and method to manage the 11km journey). Otherwise, you may find yourself faced with a lot of unnecessary pain, perspiration and panting!

Amazing place. Our little one loved the pony rides so much we went back multiple times - shout out to the staff who run the pony rides, they are so welcoming and friendly. We also loved that our 4 yr old could do the zip wires - lots of great courses to do. A great place to go with all ages and really reasonable. Lovely setting too.

We were staying in the campsite next door so didn’t need to queue / park etc. An amazing place, fully recommend. Our children are 11 and 13 years old. We loved the waterpark, its massive and easily absorbs all the people. We really enjoyed the treetop / high wire adventures (accrobranche) too - plenty of difficulty levels to suit the whole family. Price was reasonable too, we used the multipack purchase.
Hunter H — Google review
It's been one of the best places to come to for the last 12+ years, today has been busiest we have ever seen it, but the flow continues with short waits on the training routes… staff all round running and helping all the while smiling , really amazing place, the kids love it… so proud of how this place has grown
Rob V — Google review
Very impressed. Free parking with overflows also. Buy in advance to avoud queue at the reception. We did treetop parkour and water inflatables. The parkour has such range, from small kids a meter or so up to very difficult for 15yrs plus maybe. Probably 20 or so different routes for all abilities and confidence. Good numbers of staff to address problems as they happened, and plenty of zip lines across the lakes. The routes can take a while, Red 5 was 50 minutes for us - we did 3 routes in almost 3 hours at senior levels. Didn't try Juniors. The water park was huge and challenging but soon got my sea legs and was jumping, wobbling and sliding as appropriate. Hour was enough for me and glad of the deal for 2 activities. Best of all, not fighting off insects all day and by its nature, a bit shady most of the day. May go back again on this holiday.

France’s hidden gem! An incredible day out which was so good we went twice. Unlimited aerial courses for all ages and abilities. Our 2 boys of 10 & 14 loved it. Each of the colours with a good increase in difficulty. The Red course was a great test for this fairly out of shape 44 year old 😁. So many other activities available too. The ‘Escape Room’ was great fun too. I’d give it 7 stars if I could.

Nice park. A lot to do. Safety first. Everything is clean. Nice park to climb.
Tanja P — Google review
We visited today - two adults, an 11 and a 9 year old - and selected the acquapark followed by the climbing course. It was a hot day and the park was busy. According, I was prepared for long wait times and grumpy staff and customers. I needn’t have worried - the staff were all impeccably polite, competent and helpful - a real credit to the espirit de corps of the team at the park. Bravo. The only downside was that we only scratched the surface of the climbing options. We’ll have to return to continue the experience. Thoroughly enjoyable. 👏👏

Absolutely amazing, highly recommended. Excellent value for money can spend the whole day here. So much to do children aged 8,10,13 and 15 loved it as did the adults!

Historial de la Vendée

History Museums
If you're looking to delve into the rich history of Vendee, a visit to Historial de la Vendée in Lucs-sur-Boulogne is a must. This museum offers an immersive journey through the region's history from prehistoric times to the present day. The exhibits cater to both adults and children, with interactive displays and special activities. While some parts of the museum have narratives in multiple languages, visitors have noted that English translations are limited.
Our second visit to the Historial de la Vendée museum - especially to see the Osiris Egyptian exhibition - we were not disappointed! Lots of artifacts and information (not much in English though if you don’t speak French) The rest of the museum was very interesting too - with exhibitions about prehistoric times, the Middle Ages and the Vendée Wars Good visits for history buffs, and the Café was good too!
Annette K — Google review
Very informative museum. I could have spent much longer, but had to leave. I horror of the massacre perpetrated in the name of La Revolution is beyond terrible.
Chris H — Google review
This place is so glorious. Ive been coming here for 9 yrs. It's spacious, fascinating and wonderful. The staff are helpful but today was even more of an exception. We went without realising there were special activities. One of these was a falconry show. I can barely put into words how wonderful it was. My daughter who has autism would be too overwhelmed by large bird shows (for years I've wanted to take her to puy de fou but it's too much for her) but this show today was perfect. I approached the falconer after to that him and he was so kind ... Even gave my daughter a feather 🪶 from one of the eagles. Such a wonder afternoon
Sarah O — Google review
This is potentially a great introduction to the Vendée's history but only if you're a fluent French speaker. Though we speak French at intermediate level, there was too much detailed and technical information in French only to digest easily. There were too many exhibitions simply consisting of panels of writing which you could have learned simply by reading a book. The panels followed no logical sequencing or numbering so impossible to follow the information. And of course, too many displays with broken bits of pottery - a pet hate.
Graham A — Google review
A wonderful museum which can be enjoyed even if French is not your first language. We've visited on several occasions - the childrens area and visiting exhibition were different. We spent over an hour in the childrens area (theme = the sea) . Plenty to do for both kids and adults. In the main museum there are areas taking you through the history of the Vendee, a number of which have narratives in other languages. The cafe offers good value, and you can borrow picnic blankets if the weather is good. There are extensive grounds, and a moving memorial nearby.
S M — Google review
Visited both the Historial and the Memorial, primarily to see the 2nd.World War exhibition, which we found interesting, seeing it from it's effect on the French people. The building is modern and striking and facilities good, but the cafe menu is limited out of season. We found the Memorial to the Vendee massacres very moving - the commentary to the video presentation is in various languages via headphones and the chapel is worth a visit.
John S — Google review
We always enjoy visiting. Superbe exhibitions. Went to see the Romano Galleo exhibition - brilliant displays of artifacts. Interactive and informative. Also a very good cafe.
Deirdre T — Google review
Fun interactive museum where you can see the while history of mankind. There is an extra room for kids to play in and room for other exhibitions! 5 euro's to enter and it's worth it.

An absolute corker of a zoo...so lucky to have found it! All the usual animals plus a whole group of Orangutans and brown bears! Plains of Africa was stunning too!
Jude T — Google review
Its a very good zoo, with genuine awareness of the future protection of wildlife, Its a large park, with so many animals to see, We did find the map that provides a route around the park, a little difficult to follow unless you are aware of some of the structures that you have to walk through to get into another area
J L — Google review
We were there on 4th September, as most of the schools already opened, the zoo was not at all busy. We brought our own picnic. Most of the animals were sleeping because of the extreme heat but I particularly loved the African plains, but 5 kilometres to cover the entire zoo on foot is ver hard with a little one without a pram, I am hoping they will work on providing electric buggies to travel in the zoo or provide good tree cover for the summer months for us to enjoy the zoo.
Neelima G — Google review
Beautiful zoo with happy animals. There's also a playground for children. A year pass costs like two visits, so if you live anywhere around it is worth buying.
Florin B — Google review
Edit: For some reason my review got 1 star while this should definitely be 5 stars. We have thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this zoo. It is not necessarily one of the best-known zoos in France, but this zoo should definitely be on your list of good zoos in France. Obviously its a different scale compared to the big zoos like Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine or Zoo beauval, but there is some proper zoo design quality to be found here. Most zoos have at least some enclosures that are not quite up-to date anymore, but we had a hard time finding such enclosures in this zoo. Even the former bear enclosure was already of a respectable size, yet now the animals got a huge and beautiful enclosure. Our favourite enclosure was without doubt the south-america enclosure (Iguazu park): it was a lush aviary with plenty of birds, several free-roaming primate species, armadillos, margay and an indoor enclosure with free-roaming sloths and some terraria. A perfect example of clever enclosure design, interesting species, visitor immersion and efficient use of space. In general the collection is impressive with some favorites for the general public (gorilla, orang utan, lions and a fullblown africa savannah), but also plenty of rare species (snow leopard, margay, bat-eared fox, blesbok and rock-wallaby). The latest expansions are huge enclosures that are highly impressive. Undoubtedly fantastic for the animals and as such an impressive new part to the zoo. We were less excited by the tiger enclosure. This enclosure was also huge, but as these animals don't live in groups we had a hard time finding the animals in the enclosure (we found one tiger all the way in the back hidden in the grass and another one pacing the fence to the side). Also the enclosure was quite open and in my opinion lacking trees that would have made it better match the natural habitat. Personally we would consider a different choice of species that make for a more attractive group-based species. We could see a nice group of painted dogs or Dholes make for a huge improvement. So despite the big zoos in France i would highly recommend visiting zoos!

Although it's mostly ruins, the site offers stunning views of the river and valley. The chateau has a rich history and is currently undergoing restoration. Visitors can explore the ramparts and enjoy leisurely walks along the river. While there are no guided tours available, it's recommended to take one for a deeper understanding of its history.
Beautiful, rare historical village, old fortress with many towers. Old church, medieval and Italian style architectures. Romantic streets and bridges. Beautiful views of the river. Try the parking at the castle

A great old piece of architecture, still being repaired, wonderful views over the river and down the valley. The original château fell into disrepair and was purchased by an artist who turned it into a feature of the gardens so it's basically lots of walls and very few rooms.

So happy we decided last minute to stop at this castle, especially considering it was a special weekend with free entry and demonstrations. These are ruins, so you cant really enter a building and there isnt anything available to offer explainations so if its possible, you should take a guide.

The staff is helpful and the recreated period rooms with authentic furniture add to the impressive ambiance. Additionally, there are engaging audiovisual displays available in various languages.
A hidden gem.staff absolutely fantastic and audiovisual displays were amazing and in many languages. We could have spent hours here. Chateau was amazing and if it wasn't so hot you could have spent a good hour walking around the gardens. A must see and highly recommended. English spoken and at 7eur per adult and children free it was a very reasonable morning of culture.

We spent the morning at this well restored Logis, learning about the history of the Wars of the Vendée. There is an audio presentation in the first few rooms that you pass through - explaining the local history and the people involved - the guide us in several different languages so is easy to follow once you master the headsets. The staff were very helpful. Several rooms of the Logis have been recreated with period furniture and the building is quite impressive. Our favourite part was the formal gardens - complete with ornate box hedges, beds of poppies and a haha moat. Tip: take a picnic to eat in the extensive parkland.

Great day out. Museum is well thought out with loads of detail for those interested in the Vendée Wars. The spectacle is also great fun and the logos superb. Great value.
Jez B — Google review
Very French. But that's hardly a surprise. There is a "spectacle" involving 18c clothes, some sword fighting and a lot of shouting. The francophones seemed entranced. The costumes were good. I left, slightly bewildered. But my French, is, at best, basic. The exhibition of the Vendéan Royalist last stand would be interesting, I think, for a fluent French speaker. I had some understanding of history, thanks to Mike Duncan's excellent Revolutions podcast but I really didn't follow the exhibition. The Logis is what I expected, interesting enough. Our highlight was a very reasonable €2 per person carriage ride by a costumed and charming carriage driver. I like horses and with my French and our carriage driver's English, I found out a lot about Normandy cobs and heavy French horses.

Great historic house and museum catering well for the English visitor with comprehensive audio guides. Beautiful grounds and very interesting house and history relating to the revolution.

A magical, beautiful place An old Vendean logis / castle, full of history about General Charette' s capture by the Republicans during the Vendean civil war just after the French Revolution. Everything is well detailled with audioguides in different languages about the different rooms of the castles and period artifacts and of course the Vendean war heroes. They are live events organised throughout the year, classical concerts, theatrical reconstructions, painting competions, esp. in the summer. The prices are affordable and there are also reductions for students, the unemployed, etc. Car park is free and ok-ish. I always look forward to going there and when we have visitors, we take them to the Chabotterie (easy access from the express road La Roche Sur Yon <--> Nantes, well sign-posted.
Christine B — Google review
Historical place where interiors and exteriors are very nicely put. A great spot for the kids, especially when they organise performances in the decor of the gardens!
Hughes B — Google review
If one needs to know a piece of French history of times gone by visiting La Charbotterie would give a good insight on the turmoil France was in circa 1790’s. The displays on offer are excellently portrayed and it is possible to take on board a translation device to help understand. The Vendee war as it was known involved initially a group of high born gentlemen trying to usurp Napoleon and unfortunately they failed and by failing an awful lot of people lost their lives. If interested it is a place to go to and is open all year except the usual Bank holidays Christmas and New Year days

A very old castle, which focuses its tourism upon its time ruled by King Richard I. A fantastic place with, shows, kids events and freedom to walk about. While no means large, it's quaint, fun and everyone seems to relish working there.

What a wonderful thing to do with all ages but especially children under 10. The levers and buttons are easy to operate for even very little fingers. . And an added bonus that it's free! A lovely spot for lunch in the square if you have a picnic or a nice brasserie serving a variety of meals, snacks and drinks.

May 2025, it is a shame that some of the items had been removed and I couldn't find information about them. The mechanisms available worked well and moved as expected based on the available input controls. Some thought had been given to the besign and function.

As a solo traveler, stumbling upon The Animal Place - Le Crocodile in Place Napoléon felt like finding a little slice of magic in the middle of La Roche-sur-Yon. The animal sculptures come to life in the most unexpected ways-mechanical, whimsical, and oddly charming. I wandered among crocodiles, hippos, and flamingos that moved with a surreal elegance. It's peaceful, thought-provoking, and fun all at once. Perfect for solo adventurers, curious couples, and especially families with kids who’ll love the interactive vibe. It’s not your typical tourist stop-it’s a gentle surprise that invites you to slow down and smile. Highly recommend!

Le Château des Aventuriers in Vendée, France is a XVIth century French Renaissance chateau with a rich history dating back to 1555. The castle offers treasure hunts inspired by pirates and dinosaurs, making it an exciting destination for families. Visitors can embark on trails filled with puzzles and exploration, available in both English and French. In addition to the adventure trails, there are opportunities to investigate the chateau and enjoy activities such as playing in the wild west area.
Loved it here, very immersive experience and entertaining. We went with a 6 and a 8 year old and did the full grands frission pass. The haunted house escape room was awesome, the kids loved it despite being terrified! We then did the pirate adventure followed by the chateau cluedo style game - both good fun. We took a picnic in and there was plenty of room to enjoy that alongside the food offerings from the Parc. We wrapped the day up with the dinosaur trail whcih we nearly missed as we were tired, how we were glad that we did it as it was probably the best trail and also in the woods so some good respite from the sun. I am glad we went this place and we would return in the future!
Steve H — Google review
Went to do the Dino and Pirate adventure, would recommend buying tickets two days before you go to get the discount but still worth the full price. Dinos and pirates took 1-2 hours each depending on how fast you want to do it. Pirates was more games involved where dinos was more quiz like. Kids loved both. Playground leaves a lot to be desired but worth the trip up. Western city was closed when we were there so no idea how that it set up.
Aaron ( — Google review
We had a fantastic family day out here today. We went with our 9 and 6 year old who throughly enjoyed themselves. We did all 4 adventures and both our children were fine in the haunted house. I was incredibly impressed with the level of effort put into each task whether it was each of the rooms in the haunted house of the riddles to solve on the Dino trail. We arrived at 10am and left at 4pm but could have stayed later. It exceeded all expectations and was definitely worth the money. The medals for completing each adventure went down very well with our children as well. Thank you so much for a brilliant day. Highly recommended.
Rea P — Google review
Absolutely brilliant. Picnic benches on site for you to bring yours. Pirate trail was brilliant and kept three kids under 7 busy. Dino trail was almost as good. We were 4 hours there and kids got reqards after completing both tasks. We'll worth the trip , time and money.
Colin H — Google review
We really enjoyed our visit, stopping off for a few hours detour between Nantes and La Rochelle. We did the one trail option ( we opted for dinosaurs) which was perfect for us with the time we wanted to spend there. The staff were really friendly and explained the trails in English which was helpful. I really liked the fact that the puzzles are suitable for all ages ranges with my 3 year old being able to take part easily too but still interesting for us too. My daughter is disabled but it was accessible for her too and she enjoyed pushing the large buttons which were at the height of her buggy. We also ate in the snack bar which I thought was fine and not too expensive considering we were a captive audience. Would definitely return to do more trails if we were in the area.
Anna — Google review
The chateau itself is interesting and full of lovely decor, there is a lot of pretty garden to see with my favourite being the lily pad pond. I leave such negative review because the male peacocks conditions concerned me. I've owned peacocks myself for 7 years, including hatching them and raising them. They have 13 acres of land to roam, this friendly peacock has a small enclosure with no room to roost up high. I hope the peacock is released during off peak times. There is so much land for this peacock and If it’s down to the peacock being overly friendly and potentially nipping at kids then perhaps he should be relocated. I was also charged €14.40 for 2 magnums and 2 cans of juice which is extortionate. A lot of the land is restricted because of wristband colours, we truthfully ignored one of them because the beautiful lily pad pond was behind this point, I was not interested in the dinosaur exhibit just the pond so beware if you want to explore all areas a higher paying price for the right wristbands might be needed
Georgia — Google review
Great day out for kids 3 - 12 years approx. We only did the pirates treasure hunt, but there are 3 other activities if you want to spend the whole day there. Some very good points about this place: 1) it's not expensive 2) you can bring your own picnic (however, there are snacks, drinks and ice cream available on site too) 3) you can choose to purchase packages from 1 to 4 activities according to what your children are able for and how long you plan to be visit. The pirates treasure hunt was about 2 hours altogether.

I've brought several groups of friends and family to Castle Tiffauges over the years. It is a great learning environment and fun for the younger children with their exhibits and jousting. We spent several days in and around the area exploring places and learning about the area and the history here. The staff was extremely helpful and the castle itself was imposing and covered well with informative placards to explain what happened or why the people in the past did things in the past. If I were to go back to Europe to lead another group on a vacation this place would certainly be on my short list of must see sites in France.
Jeff S — Google review
I've been to castles all over Britain and Europe, this is honestly one of my favourite. We came with a 3 and a half year old and she loved the shows and the playground. It's not huge but they make up for it in activities. The prices for entry are great for what you get, you usually have to pay extra for guidebooks but we were given multiple for free, one which explains the shows in English and another with the history of the castle. The gift shop is cheap, we got two coffees & an ice cream for €4.50 which is the cheapest we've paid in France. The other gifts are very reasonably priced, especially compared to the UK. The shows are fantastic, you can watch the siege weapons in use and see some real medieval jousting and fighting. We had a great time, not happy about the English losing the battle but what can you do...

Phare des Baleines, located at the westernmost tip of Ile de Re, is an octagonal limestone tower built in the mid-1850s. I always like a good lighthouse, especially if you can climb it. Entrance is round the back (seaward side) and provides excellent 360 degree views. There is a small museum nearby.

Phare des Baleines, located at the westernmost tip of Ile de Re, is an octagonal limestone tower built in the mid-1850s. The 59m-high lighthouse offers stunning panoramic views after climbing 257 spiral steps. It has been guiding ships around the island's edge for decades and is a popular stop on circular bike rides of the island.
Amazing views and the whole area is lovely with all it's restaurants. A bit breezy and very windy at the top of the lighthouse. Great views. Hold on to your caps and phones up there!!

Google directions to parking is a bit misleading but easy to figure out. Parking can be an issue in holiday times. There is a market with clothing shops and restaurants as well as the light tower, the old tower is just behind it.

Very cool place to go to learn about the local history of the island and the lighthouse and as well the other lighthouses that dot French coastline. Worth the drive to the tip of Île de Ré.

Water & Amusement Parks
O'Gliss Park - Parc aquatique Vendée is a sprawling water park featuring lagoons, multiple slides, daily foam parties, and virtual rafting. It offers adrenaline-pumping thrills for water enthusiasts of all ages. The park provides entertainment for the whole family from 9:00 am to 8 pm with huge water slides for adults and older kids, as well as a dedicated area for younger children with climbing frames, small water slides, and sensory stations.
If you are in Vendee , it’s a must to enjoy the water park. This place is suitable for small children till teenagers and Adults . Staff was very friendly , as we don’t speak French , they did the best to answer our questions . The park is maintained well when it comes to hygiene . My advise is to choose confort option where you can relax while children are enjoying the rides. It was a fun day out with Family .
Sidhukumar C — Google review
My experience was just okay. The park has potential, but it needs major improvements in logistics and organization. The queues were extremely long, I’d recommend getting the "Comfort VIP Pass" unless you want to waste your day waiting. There also weren’t enough seating areas to relax or sunbathe. Overall, the experience felt mediocre, and at €36, it wasn’t worth the price.
Oussama T — Google review
That's a perfect park. But without an access rapid (VIP) you'll waste your time. Without the VIP pass you need to wait up to 1 hour for each toboggan. It'll take a few days to try everything. So, if you really want to enjoy your day, you need to book in advance a VIP pass (1 week minimum). We've chosen Lodge Emotion and that was pretty cool. It had a separate lounge zone where you can rest and eat, and also it included many "cut-the-line" passes (enough to enjoy for the whole day). Be wary of asking how much passes you really have. They write that you have 2 rapid passes for the toboggan 8, 9 and 10. In the beginning, you may think that you have just 2 passes for 2 combinations of them (8 and 9, or 8 and 10), but in reality you can do each 2 times (6 in total). Also, if you have kids, who can't do some adult toboggans, you can enjoy using their passes for yourselves. In conclusion, that's the perfect place to pass your day enjoying every second. Have fun!

We went on a Friday on 11th of July, although it was quite busy it was very very much worth it. The entrance line was quite long so I do recommend buying tickets in advance but it wasn’t too bad. Also the lines for the rides were about 5-20 minutes depending on the time and ride, but all rides were worth the wait in my opinion. If you’re going with friends the lines are genuinely nothing to worry about at the start of July. It was also very fun and the food isn’t too expensive. Only thing is that literally everything is in French and NOTHING is translated so we had to ask a lot of people, but staff was friendly and most of them spoke English. Also it’s France so we didn’t expect English signs, but would’ve been nice to such a big park.

Our favourite water park! Big enough but still human size, lots of fun slides and various pools and activities for the whole family, and beautifully designed and decorated with a lot of flowers and trees. We like the picnic area too. And the staff is so friendly! We always have an amazing day every time we visit.
Florence J — Google review
Fantastic water park! Was busy on the day & waiting times for somes slides were upto 40 minutes, but we'll worth it, numbers did decline in late afternoon with little or no ques. Get a storage box for your kit & definitely get the wrist bands for drinks & food no cash taken on site. Definitely go again!
Justin P — Google review
Only visit if you can bring yourself to buy VIP tickets otherwise it’s totally not worth it. Chaotically busy and understaffed when we visited on a Tuesday in August. Waited an hour for a ride that took 20 seconds and was barely better than our campsite’s free chutes. In that time it took us to get to the front, we saw the same VIP ticket holders go down the ride 4 times. Couldn’t face the hour-long queue for the stingray chutes or the other big attractions. Pools were good but rammed. Had to sit on the ground next to a path to eat lunch as no available seats. No staff at the top of the chutes - if there had been they could have got more people down the chutes instead everyone relying on the the overly-conservative traffic lights. Queued for 15 mins just to use the female toilets. No-one manning the overflow car park meant some poor sods couldn’t get their cars out because they had been boxed in front and back. Not us, luckily - and we couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

(Translated by Google) The settings are very nice and the puzzles particularly well done and varied. On the other hand, the moral lesson from The Gamemaster because we shout too loudly is the first time I have had it in 10 escape games. Even after recognizing that we should have spoken less loudly at times due to the excitement of our teenagers, there is no need to make us repeat it 5 times. This really spoiled our end of the game with a quick photo at the end. Makes you wonder if she was listening to us because she discovered on the way out that one of us had hurt and bled (nothing serious) even though we said it several times... The La Roche Master games are nicer with a real photo in the settings and not the quick photo.

Amusement park
Puy du Fou is a historical theme park that offers epic, period-specific shows such as the Vikings and Ancient Rome. The park features astonishing special effects, including dancing horses, rotating castles, and Viking longships emerging from underwater. With jousting knights, panoramic cinemas, and spectacular dance sequences, visitors are in for an immersive historical experience. Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2017, Puy du Fou continues to innovate with an ever-increasing amount of entertainment.
I had read about this park, but nothing can prepare you for what you’ll see – it’s absolutely stunning and unforgettable! If you arrive around 9 AM and get the skip-the-line upgrade, you can catch all the shows in a day. Be aware that the roads get very crowded (our drive from Cholet took about an hour). A good tip: bring some food in a backpack and eat while watching the shows to save time. Totally worth it!
Alexandru L — Google review
It has been an unforgettable experience. The shows we attended were of great quality, including the costumes and staging. I must point out that it seemed to me that the sound was playback rather than live, and the simultaneous translation was slightly out of sync in some shows. Of course, it’s impossible to see everything in just one day, but even so, it’s well worth the visit — highly recommended for the whole family.
Lucía C — Google review
Love this park. As a family went have been visiting since 1989. We have seen so many changes over the years. It never ceases to amaze us every visit. We have a season pass as we now live in the area, so far this season we have been every week, our family of 4 and their families are avid Puy du fou fans, the grandchildren absolutely love it!. Great options for food, coffee and snacks. Gift shops well stocked with various memorabilia and various artisan shops in the medival and viking villages. Fun for all the family and all ages with not a ride in sight! A wonderful way to immerse yourself in french history and appreciate the performers enthusiasm in doing what they obviously love doing. The cinecine is something else,a must see,indescribable....see for yourself.

As you will need to walk around and spend time to line up, a detailed plan is very necessary in order to finish all the programs. Every shows are giving surprises to the audience. Very impressive. Bravo 🎉
T F — Google review
This place was incredible, we booked last minute not knowing what to expect and it did not disappoint. A lot of the shows are quite close together so we did have to run to catch them but there are hotels so you could stay for 2 days and see all the shows in good time. As a theme park it is a little pricey but this was to be expected. Make sure you take some headphones so you can translate the shows!
Robotllamas — Google review
What a place! A must do if you're looking for a unique experience with a tint of French history across the time. The well equipped parc is huge, so make sure that you wear comfy shoes! Booking in advance is a must, and depending on the time of the year you'll be visiting Le Puy du Fou, you might face waiting queues before attending the most rated shows... I strongly suggest that you download the apps, that will help you to organise your visit. We managed to watch the best shows, keeping us time to visit the parc, the villages replicas and indulge ourselves at some of the restaurants as well. Special thanks to all the dedicated staff, you are doing a great job! We had a great stay and we'll come back for sure.
Yozhyk — Google review
If you don’t speak French bear in mind you will be some what left in the dark here outside of the shows. None of the signage show any English and the shows are obviously in French but you can use the live translation if you’ve got the app. The shows however are outstanding even if you don’t know what’s being said very impressive indeed. Worth the visit.
Fionn M — Google review
We spent a few days at Puy du Fou and were absolutely blown away by the experience. The quality of the shows, both indoor and outdoor, is phenomenal. I had visited the park as a child about 20 years ago and was already impressed back then, but what it has become today is on an entirely different level. The scale and sophistication of the productions are unlike anything else. From massive sets to special effects that leave you wondering how it's even possible, every show is a true spectacle. The immersive experiences are just as unforgettable and add another layer to the journey through time. The scheduling of the shows is incredibly well thought out. We barely waited more than 15 or 20 minutes between each performance. Visiting just before the high season probably helped, but still, the whole day flowed smoothly without feeling rushed or overcrowded. Some historical events are presented with a certain angle, but that’s part of the park’s narrative style. It doesn’t take away from the fact that this is great entertainment at its finest. We truly loved our stay and would recommend Puy du Fou to anyone looking for unique and breathtaking live entertainment.

Ile De Re is a beautiful but busy port . Hordes of tourists in the summer months . Boats come and go as do day trippers . It is expensive here - something I don’t particularly care for given I am a seasoned traveller . You can cut costs by heading to the market . There is a nice cafe where you can have salmon, prawns and oysters . There is also a baguette place . Well worth a visit and was on my hit list .

One of my favorite places in France. It is only 3.5h drive from our house so we go there very often. This year we have been here almost every month. This port is one of the most beautiful port in France. Small, charming, and the colors of the village are just sublime. It does take a very experienced and skillful captain to be able to navigate and dock inside this small port. There are tons of restaurants and boutiques all over the island and especially here in St Martin. A perfect paradise to spend the summer.

Clocher Observatoire de Saint-Martin en Ré is located in a charming town with narrow paved streets that have preserved the classical aspect of the reign of Louis XIV. The old sailors quarter, surrounded by a wet dock and lined with shops, forms an island at the center of the port. Visitors can explore timber-framed houses from the 16th and 17th centuries in various squares. The observatory bell tower offers a nice view, but visitors should be cautious on the narrow stairs.
Must see in Saint-Martin de Re! Great 360 degree view over the whole village and island! It is super empty and we had the rooftop of the church tower for ourselves! We preferred this compared to the light tower at the western end of the city! Opening hours until very late so that you can see the sunset and Entry fee of only 2,25€ for adults!

Parc Oriental de Maulévrier is a must-visit destination in Maine-et-Loire, offering a complete change of scenery. It's the largest Japanese garden in Europe and showcases different aspects throughout the seasons. The well-maintained and lush greenery provides a serene atmosphere for visitors to enjoy. While some areas may seem unfinished, overall it offers a great experience, especially when avoiding peak times.
Great gardens and outdoor space. Not a full on formal Japanese water garden but a greater oriental influenced space combining colours, shaping and thoughtful planting and curation that captures the essence of a Japanese space. Adorable 💕
Tony F — Google review
We went on a weekday in early may but the garden was busier than I had expected and there was a good 10 minute wait at the ticket office. The parking is a bit strange as you have to go to a public car park on the other side of a road and walk through a tunnel to reach the entrance. The gardens and the plant sales area were very interesting but not at their best when we visited. It’s basically a linear walk up one side of the watercourse and then back the other side; some of the vistas over the lakes are quite spectacular. We did a 200km round trip to visit and judged it worthwhile.
D D — Google review
Incredible, big Japanese gardens with plenty of trees and shade, so if you start to get sunburnt, you can just walk a few metres and go in the shade to cool down. Not very busy as it was a weekday, but I’d imagine it could get pretty busy on weekends and public holidays. All in all, great place to visit if you are in Maulévrier or surroundings.

We visited for Easter Sunday, and we weren't the only ones planning on going. Parking was hard to find, it took us about 15 minutes. Then the line was incredibly long, if you see a line coming out of the entrance just purchase them online and you'll skip the line entirely (that's what we did). Once in, we went against the crowd and were able to take really nice picture with minimal people in the foreground. Most of the cherry blossoms were gone but some were still in bloom. It's a really beautiful garden that you can get lost in for hours. If you don't like crowds don't go during the holidays, especially in Spring.

Fascinating insight to the life of a medieval Lord and his family. Laid out really well and the museum with period furnishings was very evocative of the time

Reasonably priced with free reign to wander the partly restored Donjon and gardens at your own pace. You can read the about the Donjons history and view the surrounding areas from the top. There are sometimes additional exhibits in the lower rooms (an art installation when we visited). You will need to be steady on your feet as some of the steps are quite steep. The views from the top are fantastic and worth the effort to climb up. Parking is limited in the village with on-street parking.

English visiting: This is a lovely renovated dungeon in Bazoges. It boasts a panoramic view at the top of the tower (up a narrow spiral staircase), a lovely garden (with descriptions and medieval uses of the plants) and a small art gallery of sorts (possibly local art?). 5 € entry for adults (less for kids and there is also a reduction category but not sure what this applies to!). Well restored with a helpful receptionist at the entrance who spoke English and was able to give basic instructions on moving around the dungeon and a English leaflet on the tower and garden. Natur'Zoo Mervent, located in the heart of the Mervent forest, is home to around 300 animals including big cats, giraffes, bears, eagles, wolves, lemurs and sand cats. Visitors can enjoy up-close encounters with the animals and even have the opportunity to pet and feed some of them. The zoo offers a range of hands-on experiences for both children and adults.
This zoo is excellent. We turned up late morning and left after 6 hours. It is worth waiting for the animal feeding from 15:00 onwards with excellent zookeeper explanations (although only in French), the animals seemed more alert at this time and after feeding. You can get really close to everything without intruding and all the animals have plenty of space it seems. Great value for money, well recommended.

Fun time. Went during the day to avoid mosquitoes but still got some bites. Kids loved it. Very narrow water ways in places can make inexperienced boaters just hit the side the whole time. Otherwise very peaceful and enjoyable.

Very pretty water Ride

This was a really great activity. Would have been 5 stars if there weren't so many thorns overhanging the riverbank.

Abbey Maillezais is a must-visit historical site with impressive ruins and beautiful grounds. The abbey offers a 30-minute play, making it an interesting and educational experience for visitors. Additionally, the surrounding Venice Vert waterways can be explored by hiring a boat, adding to the overall experience. The site also features free parking and a picnic area, perfect for enjoying a leisurely lunch amidst the picturesque surroundings.
Wonderful place to visit. Very well organised and the downloadable tour in English was very interesting. Not expensive (7euros a head) and we were there for at least 1.5 hrs.

We visited the Abbey at Maillezais on a quiet Tuesday morning and enjoyed wandering around the grounds and learning about the history. Such an interesting place. Top tip - take one of the guided tours ( in French) and the history of the abbey is brought to life. The views from the top of the tower are amazing - take your time walking up the stone staircase! Once you have finished your visit - make sure that you have a look around the gift shop - lots of interesting gifts and many are locally made using local ingredients - including local crafts people who have earned the ‘Values of the Marais Poitevin Parc’ label - I recommend the handmade soaps!

From a distance, the surviving fragment of the nave looks like a fortification, but turns out to be a powerful ruin, with outlines of the various versions of the old east ends. Guest house remains almost complete. Some useful audio-visual displays, very helpful to the visitor. Beautiful grounds, including a cloister garden.

Awesome site with ruins of a cathedral as big as Paris Notre Dame. The visit does not take long and the history behind is quite interesting

Absolutely phenomenal visit. The remains just say enough about the enormous size this must have had in its peak years.

Could be more engaging for children. But lovely restaurant and boat rental adds up to 5 stars
