Cascata da Portela do Homem

Outdoor Activities
Other Outdoor Activities
Cascata da Portela do Homem is a stunning waterfall located in northeastern Portugal, just meters from the Spanish border. The waterfall tumbles down a jagged rock face into a clear pool, creating a picturesque and serene setting. Visitors can enjoy the pristine waters and even take a refreshing dip after a long walk. The area is accessible with a small entrance fee, and it's recommended to wear runners or walking shoes to reach the waterfall.
Amazing national park! Only 1 euro 50 for entry. Natural fresh water for swimming with waterfalls. It's a steep climb down, but it's worth it
S34nVideos — Google review
Amazing place in summer to do some small river swimmimg. but not much place to sit. you probably will have to sit on stones. take your slippers to walk through river more easily. A bit crowded as well. But you should like the place if you are into nature and such.
Mostafa M — Google review
There is a easy hiking trial that will bring you to all waterfalls within a 2 kilometer radius. If you like waterfalls do download a hiking app and explore..
Lian K — Google review
My favorite waterfall in the national park! The parking is a 15 min walk from the lagune. We visited in the evening around 6:30pm and had the place almost to ourselves.
Maija J — Google review
It’s such a cool place feels like a paradise, be mindful with shoes and I wouldn’t suggest to take really small kids it’s quite hard to get down there and quite dangerous
Aleksandr A — Google review
Very beautiful, but very dangerous too! The access to the waterfall is difficult and it’s cold and hard to swim. I don’t intend to return, but for the beauty of the place, I give it a good review.
Samira M — Google review
The location is amazing. Don't forget to park your car at the parking lot five minutes away. Bring a towel and don't be afraid to dip your toes in the water.
Grzegorz P — Google review
is arguably the best waterfall in Gerês, especially around 19:00, when the crowd thins out and the golden light makes it perfect for photography 🌅. The emerald-green plunge pool below the falls is serene and inviting, making this a truly memorable spot . --- 🌟 Why It's Top Tier One of the most scenic and accessible waterfalls in Peneda-Gerês, offering a beautiful natural pool ideal for cooling off during warm months . Framed by rugged cliffs and lush forest, the setting is dramatic and photogenic — with great light late afternoon and early evening . Rated impressively high by visitors and consistently referenced as a highlight of the region . --- 🕖 Best Time to Visit Aim to arrive around 7:00 PM — fewer people and warm, angled lighting for stunning photos. Morning visits work too, but evenings offer a quieter and visually richer experience. --- 🥾 Access & Hiking Park about 700 m from the waterfall, typically at the former border station, and walk the shaded road toward the waterfall . The final descent to the pool involves walking on rocks and uneven terrain — go slow, especially after rain . --- 🏞 Adventure & Extras The area is bordered by Mata de Albergaria forest and the rugged terrain fits for adventurous souls. Beyond the main waterfall, the river upstream leads to other hidden pools and cascades. Many travelers call it the emerald oasis of Gerês, perfect for swimming, exploring, and snapping unbeatable shots — just remember to respect the nature and not swim into restricted zones . --- **For more tips follow me on Google. I have a lot of maps and places to visit all around the world 🌎 all for free for my followers on Google Maps.**

Pena Aventura

Amusement park
Tours
Zip lines, canyoning & a toboggan-like rail ride at a family-oriented wilderness activity center.
We went on a Monday morning in October and there was nobody there! We did the medium level ropes course (because at the time the difficult level had fallen after a storm). It was fun! We also did the coaster which is a MUST! It’s so fast but you do have breaks you control yourself!
Savannah P — Google review
It was a rainy day so we did the fantasticable the alpine coaster. Both the zipline and the car track were great but it was a bit expensive in my opinion.
Anuroopa G — Google review
Alota of fun, but they need to work on their tech a bit more, a digital pdf map would have been useful, but kids loved it none the less, you will need a few hours so make sure go a bit early regardless of what you booked online you might want to still do more. Highly recommend for families.
Mohamed Q — Google review
Except for the Fantasticable and Negative Jump (which I recommend), all attractions are a bit expensive for what they offer. The horse ride is definitely too short for 30€/person and the Big Tower is not that big.
Ricardo A — Google review
Big park with lots of activities but not all of them operate all year long (such as the rafting, available only in the winter). We couldn’t order all the activities online so we bought some of them through the tickets box (closed between 13-14:00). I bought some of the activities online but never received my tickets although my card was charged. I checked at the ticket box but they didn’t see my order so I had to buy again. I sent an email to their office I hope I will get a refund on my lost order. The staff is very friendly and helpful, they speak English and Spanish so we could manage easily. There is a small cafeteria with hamburgers and sandwiches with fair prices (menu is ~9€ drinks included but don’t expect much…) My kids loved the flying zip line and the alpine coaster. The karting is small and a bit boring, more suitable for young kids. Overall we had a nice experience.
Tally — Google review
Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing experience. I clearly explained to the ticket office that I wanted a ticket for two people, but they issued a single ticket instead. When we went to use it, the staff refused to acknowledge the mistake and said there was no way to refund or fix the issue. It felt like there was no coordination at all between the ticketing team and the activity staff, and the customer was left to deal with the consequences. I expected a more professional and responsible approach.
Hamed M — Google review
Was a lot of fun. Really recommend to go do the canyoning. Was a cool and active way to experience the nature of this region. We had a nice and funny guide.
Benji E — Google review
Came here with friends and our main focus was to ride the Alpine Coaster. If you’re coming make sure you have a car, I’m not really sure if you’re able to get there using public transportation. The receptionist was quite professional and helpful, we paid 10€ per person, for 2 rides in the Alpine Coaster(You can pay with card). It was a lot of fun, if you’re on the heavier side, it’s funnier as it takes the weight of your body to determine the speed you go. I felt secure and the briefing was clear and thorough. The park has a lot of cool activities we were not able to do as it was already late and raining. If you’re thinking about going, either with friends, family or lover, this is a super fun place to go! I recommend going on the summer!!

Castelo de Chaves

Mentioned on

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the charming town of Chaves, the Castelo de Chaves is a delightful historical gem that offers visitors a glimpse into Portugal's rich past. This well-preserved castle, which dates back to around 1160 when it was conquered by knights Rui and Garcia Lopes for the Portuguese Crown, stands proudly on a hill overlooking the picturesque cityscape and surrounding landscapes.
A beautiful small castle that is still intact from its origin, one of the many castles that still stand in Portugal. There is a garden and easy to park on street paid parking. This castle on a hill it overlooks the city scapes of chaves and the landscape that surrounds the city. I also recommend to visit the old downtown that is near the castle where you can still feel the architecture from medieval era.
Sergio B — Google review
Cute small castle with french garden and nice views to the river and downtown. Entrance not well signaled. You need to enter - one big medieval stair - to know prices and all.
Priscilla D — Google review
Castelo de Chaves Type: castle/museum Time spent: 30-40 min. Parking: available Bike parking: not available Path for disabled: not available Price: 1 EUR Local tradition states, that around 1160 the brothers Rui and Garcia Lopes, knights of D. Afonso Henriques, conquered Chaves for the Portuguese Crown. For this feat, they would have been rewarded by the sovereign with the domains of the town and its castle. The bodies of the brothers are buried in the Church of Santa Maria Maior. Some authors state that the construction of this keep was a response to the construction of Monterey Castle, on the opposite side of the border, in the kingdom of Galicia. The castle would return to action during the Restoration Period, and its defenses were modernized, and adapted to then-modern artillery fire. To this end, between 1658 and 1662 the town's lower walls were rebuilt.
Oleh S — Google review
Ig - @oursceneos Perched on a high vantage point overlooking the city, the medieval castle offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Adjacent to the castle lies a beautifully landscaped garden, perfect for leisurely strolls, and a well-preserved fortress from the modern era, adding layers of historical richness to the experience. As one of the city's top tourist attractions, this area invites visitors to immerse themselves in centuries of history while enjoying the serene beauty of its surroundings. Whether you're an avid history enthusiast or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, the castle and its surroundings promise a memorable and enriching visit.
Our S — Google review
Castle quite compact. A military museum as they seem to be. Very reasonable admission and you have access to the roof for the views. In the town so easy to get to
Roger T — Google review
It's more of a tower than a full-on castle. Inside however is a nice little military museum going up several flights with eventual access to the roof area, giving great panoramic vies of Chaves. Museum good value at 1e per person.
Diskwizz — Google review
Small but interesting town with great little cafes and bars. Plenty of free parking very close by.
David H — Google review
Lovely little castle. 1€ per adult 50c per teenager. Some interesting weapons and uniforms on display over 3 floors. At the top you can access the castle roof and look out over Chaves.

When exploring the charming town of Chaves, one cannot overlook the stunning Trajano Bridge, an ancient Roman stone pedestrian bridge that gracefully spans the Tâmega River. This architectural marvel features elegant arches and inscribed columns, serving as a testament to its historical significance since Roman times. As you stroll across this iconic structure, especially during sunset, you'll be captivated by how it beautifully reflects warm hues against the river and surrounding buildings.

Eric S — Google review
Ig: @oursceneos Epigraphy provides valuable insights into the diverse peoples who once inhabited the region of Aquae Flaviae, a former Roman municipality that served as the regional capital of the ancient Conventus Bracaraugustanus and later the Province of Gallaecia. These inscriptions offer a fascinating glimpse into the social and cultural fabric of this important historical area. The remnants of these ancient writings, carved in stone, reveal the rich mosaic of ethnicities and communities that coexisted in Aquae Flaviae, painting a vivid picture of life during the Roman Empire. Whether marking significant events, honoring notable figures, or commemorating local traditions, these epigraphic records are a testament to the region’s vibrant past. Exploring these inscriptions not only allows one to step back in time but also deepens the understanding of how Aquae Flaviae played a pivotal role in the broader structure of Roman administration and its transition into the later periods of Gallaecia. Visitors and scholars alike are drawn to these relics of antiquity, as they continue to offer endless discoveries about the lives, beliefs, and governance of those who shaped this historic landscape. Whether you’re passionate about Roman history or simply curious to learn more, the epigraphy of Aquae Flaviae opens a window to a bygone era, inviting you to explore the fascinating stories etched in stone.

Beautiful bridge in a Beautiful town. Known to be the first roman bridge in Portugal.
Jose E — Google review
It was a quiet sleepy little town, yet charming and quaint with an old world, nostalgic feel as though time has stood still. The old town maintains its stalwart character retaining the numerous traces of those who have passed through since ancient times.
Phoenix A — Google review
Very important place since the Roman times. A huge step in the Portugal begging. Such a BEAUTIFULL place. That even today crossing the bridge you can't be indifferent to such beauty, calm and amazing unique place. It brings you back to the beggings of times

Castle isn't a parador anymore, the parador is 100 yards down the hill. The parador is very nice with excellent views. The castle is a little rundown but great view from top of the keep
Ej R — Google review
it's an interesting experience to stay in a castle, nice views. It wasn't the most comfortable staying for us - we had problems with temperature regulations in the room, the system just didn't work and it was always 24-24.5 C which was too hot for us. The restaurant was good - we had pulpo and rice with something.

Castle Bragança

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Castle Bragança, located in the capital of the Bragança district in northeast Portugal, is a significant historical site with a rich military legacy. The castle houses a museum exhibiting antique weapons and Portuguese military artifacts. The city of Bragança played a crucial role in defending the Portuguese border and is part of the Iberian Plateau Transboundary Biosphere Reserve recognized by UNESCO. Surrounding natural parks offer diverse biodiversity and stunning landscapes.
Brilliant. Especially for motorhomes as the municipal parking is within the outer castle grounds. Free with water and emptying! You have access to the outer castle walls that start at one side of the castle, encircle the original settlement, now updated, and finish at the other side of the castle. About one kilometre? They are quite high and your safety is your responsibility but if you are sure footed it's well worth it for the views all round. There are no safety rails along the inner perimeter. It's as it was constructed, quite rightly! The castle itself is well worth a visit for a small charge but disappointingly you do not have access to the roof. It is an interesting castle to explore and there are plenty of other vantage points and towers for views. The small museum of masks and costumes is within the castle outer grounds and worth a visit along with a few restaurants and church. There is plenty of parking outside the castle and outside the walls.

A relaxing experience around the castle walls gives great views for miles. There is an artisan shop here and you can buy food and drink. This is not a really good place for the disabled because the paths and roads are quite uneven.

🏰 A Stone Chronicle Above the City ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5) I visited Castelo de Bragança in June 2025, and it immediately felt like stepping through a portal in time. Rising above the town on a hilltop, this 12th-century fortress commands one of the most breathtaking panoramas in northern Portugal. Its granite towers and thick walls seem untouched by the centuries — silent witnesses to medieval battles, royal intrigues, and the deep roots of Portuguese identity. Walking through the gates, I could almost hear echoes of armored footsteps. Inside, the Keep Tower (Torre de Menagem) stands tall and proud, housing a small but engaging Military Museum. Even if you’re not a history enthusiast, the view alone is worth the climb — the red roofs of Bragança spread out below like a painted canvas, framed by the Serra de Montesinho hills. The atmosphere was calm and respectful; only a handful of visitors, a soft wind, and the sound of swallows looping around the battlements. It’s one of those places that quietly stays with you — both grand and human at once. Practical Notes Bring water and a hat — shade is limited at the top. Go early morning or late afternoon for cooler light and better photos. Walking paths are cobbled; wear comfortable shoes. Lovely little museum charting Portugal's history over the last 600 years. Fantastic map of Portugal from the peninsular war era for Sharpe fans. All distances in miles! And the time to walk those miles. Loads of armaments through the ages on display. Adults 3 euros, seniors only 1 euro! The castle itself is free but if you want to go to the top of the keep, that's part of the museum. Lots of places where you could fall a long way if you're not careful eg walls without rails. It's great!

Bragança Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress, built in the 12th century, offering stunning views of the city and surrounding region. Its imposing Keep Tower and sturdy walls make it a must-visit historical site. Inside, you'll find the Military Museum, though it was closed for lunch when I visited. There are parking spaces nearby for small cars and motorcycles, with a lot located within the castle grounds, though it’s best to arrive early, especially in peak seasons. The exterior alone is worth the visit, making it an essential stop in Bragança.

A beautiful place to visit. Lots to see. It's very popular for motorhomes - they should charge to park. I would happily pay
Sara S — Google review
The space isn’t huge, but it’s very cool. You can explore the walls that cover the entire area. There are a few small restaurants and some stores next to the castle, but unfortunately, they were closed on the day of my visit. There is a small museum inside the castle, but nothing particularly unique
Georgia C — Google review
One of the most beautiful castles I have visited. Small charge for adults and kids for free. Once through the entrance you basically are free to roam around the castle walls and also visit the museum which is housed inside the keep.

Great experience to know more about nature and about this beautiful corner of the world. Guide was kind and fun and we could enjoy a didactic and relaxed experience.
Miguel P — Google review
Interesting visit, but honestly what you'll see is not worth the price. The wildlife is rarely present and the trip is very small (2 miles each way). The whole trip is entirely dependent on the crew presentation for any meaning, and even then you'll rarely even understand it. Don't do it for the free PORTO wine at the end, it is very low quality (and they don't even show you which brand(s) are available.
Nelson S — Google review
Unless you speak Spanish or Portuguese don't bother with the boat trip. They give you a map/information leaflet. Absolutely minimal English account of each feature on the trip. The guide gave extensive accounts of each feature in Spanish and Portuguese . We asked for some English commentary but the guide said she would only give it in the 2 languages mentioned. We spoke to her afterwards in English. She said they were hoping to have an English commentary with ear phones in the future. Even a printed paragraph in English would have been very easy to do , can't understand why they did not provide this. The scenery was spectacular but a waste of money overall.
Con C — Google review
It's only for old people and kids. The drive on the river is really nice but the only tell you stuff in Spanish and Portuguese. Half of it is just a cheap cassette tape they play for you. The port tasting is a waste of plastic cups. You got not even five minutes to fill those cups from the tap. There is no explanation whatsoever and all the people just standing in the way so there s no reaching those taps. Stuff seemed to be really in a hurry to finish the program. Birds looked nice but not happy. I am pretty sure they rather be free in nature than locked and shown off to tourists. I am pretty sure there are better ways to explore duoro. Wouldn't recommend this.
Coole S — Google review
An amazingly conceived and presented tour! The crew immerses you in the Douro Valley from the beginning and points out the highlights of the area throughout. It's incredibly varied in things of interest, but you never feel lost or overwhelmed, thanks to the crew. You have the chance to see some spectacular and tall cliffs, ancient areas of cultivation, waterfalls (usually dry in summer), eagle nests, and even eagles themselves - if you're lucky! Strongly recommended!
José F — Google review
The experience is great no doubt, but the value of 18€ per person for a cruise ride is higher than the time spend.
Aashish S — Google review
18€/adult and 9€/child up to 10 yo. The tour last an hour, explanation are given in Portugese and spanish., Not any other language. Every one must remain seated and listen to the guide....we felt like pupils at school. There is no much to see
Chris N — Google review
First: there is no English tour available, only Portugese and Spanish. So we couldn't understand much of the tour, even though it seemed very interesting. The website is available in English, so we felt this was very misleading, as it isn't mentioned anywhere (I specifically looked before we booked the tour) that there's no English guide. Second: you don't actually see anything. The scenery is beautiful of course, with magnificent rock walls on both side of the river, but the only "wildlife" we saw, was plankton under a microscope. I get that with nature and animals, there are never any guarantees, but combined with the fact that the guide didn't speak English (and no, the little "brochure" was little help) this was just an expensive boat ride for us. Third: there's free porto at the end of the trip (self-serve) and people threw themselves on it. I don't see the point of porto in an "international" biological research centre (before noon even). Lastly: I felt really sad for the lonely otter in the tiny enclosure at the entrance. The animal was clearly disturbed, swimming to and fro, and trying to climb up in the corners. Combined with the screens and the "theme park-like" music through the speakers, this trip felt more like a trip to a zoo or Disneyland than a trip to an proper scientific facility. Some ecological tips for the future: what's the point of booking online and having a code, if you have to go through the register to receive a paper ticket anyway + there's no filling station for your water bottle.

Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The Catedral de Zamora is a historic church originating from the 12th century, featuring a unique blend of architectural styles including Romanesque and Byzantine. Its location at the intersection of Caminos de Plata and Levanter, along the banks of Duero river adds to its charm. Although not as grandiose as other Spanish cathedrals like Toledo or Salamanca, it offers impressive structures such as chapels, altar and dome-like ceilings inside.
Zamora Cathedral may not be the largest, but it’s one of the most captivating Romanesque buildings in Spain. Its distinctive dome—covered in stone scales—rises gracefully above the crossing, giving the structure a unique and almost mystical presence. Inside, the choir stalls and the revered 'Cristo de las injurias' add depth and solemnity, while the adjoining cloister leads to a small museum with exquisite medieval tapestries. A true highlight is the nighttime tour, Aromas de Fe, which offers a completely different perspective. The cathedral is lit with warm, dramatic lighting that transforms its stonework and spaces into something intimate and almost theatrical. These visits take place on Saturday nights, are limited to small groups, and last about an hour. However, the experience comes at a premium—night tickets cost roughly double the daytime entrance.
Ajai A — Google review
Although it is not in the class of the great cathedrals of Spain such as Toledo, Salamanca and Leon it is still well worth a visit. Located along the banks of the Duero and where the Caminos de Plata and Levanter meet, this 12th Century Romanesque construction was completed in an astonishing 27 years. It boasts some particularly attractive structures including its altar, chapels and domelike ceilings (pictures included).

This is a beautifully preserved, ancient cathedral that hosts a myriad of fascinating pieces of art in its small interior. Opened in 1174, it is a wonderful example of Romanesque architecture in Spain. Although it includes important changes from the 16th century, you can feel the antiquity of this church as you walk about in its interior. It is, however, most recognised from its exterior appearance. The cathedral overlooks the Duero river, and its bell tower and dome have become inseparable symbols of the town of Zamora. Its location, at the end of the historical downtown, invites visitors to walk through the city before arriving to it. We paid no entry fee, it was actually quite warm inside despite a freezing day outside, and there were available leaflets with some handy information. Definitely, a must-see visit if you pass by Zamora!

The Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor, also known as the Collegiate Church of St. Mary Major, is a stunning Romanesque church located in Toro. Its warm sandstone structure and intricate design are reminiscent of Zamora's cathedral, reflecting the architectural style of eight centuries ago. The recent restoration of its facade and entrance portico has enhanced its beauty, making it a captivating sight both day and night.
Beautiful Romanesque collegiate church whose facade has been recently restored as well as the entrance portico. Worth the look both daylight and night with the cute illumination. Art Museums
Casa Botines is a striking modernist building in Leon, Spain, designed by the legendary architect Antoni Gaudi. Constructed between 1891 and 1892, it was originally intended as a residential and commercial space. The edifice showcases Gaudi's unique style, blending neo-Gothic influences with his signature modernist touch. Today, Casa Botines serves as a museum displaying Spanish paintings and houses the FUNDOS art collection spanning from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries.
Casa Botines is one of Gaudi’s modernist masterpieces that happens to be outside of his native Catalunya. Originally build in 1892 for apartments and commercial space (on the ground and lower ground floors), Casa Botines is now a museum that houses artifacts from its heyday and also works of art. While it is a bit subdued compared to some of the genius architect Gaudi’s other works, the museum and the tour are well worth it. Highly recommend especially for those who appreciate modernist architect and Gaudi in particular.

If you’re a Gaudí lover, don’t miss Casa Botines in León! I visited it today and was so pleased. The audio guide unveils so many fascinating details about the house, Gaudí’s life, and the hidden symbolism woven into the building’s design. The beautifully reconstructed rooms offer a glimpse into how the spaces would have looked in Gaudí’s time. A section allows to delve into Gaudí’s creative mind, his deep connection to nature, geometry, and meaning, making the experience even more special. On the third floor, a rich art collection awaits, with highlights being Dalí’s Divine Comedy illustrations and Goya’s Caprichos. An inspiring and beautifully curated visit, highly recommended to anyone intrigued by Gaudí’s world beyond Barcelona!
Tanio C — Google review
Lovely Gaudi building. The building process documented on interesting display boards in Spanish and English. The highlight for us was the Goya etchings, the Los Caprichos, on the 3rd floor. A look into the mind of a genius artist.
Linda B — Google review
One of only three Gaudi buildings outside of Barcelona, Casa Botines is perhaps Gaudi's most conservative structure. That said it is still wild in its irregular beauty.
Nirav D — Google review
The building is very nice, but the museum part is very plain. Maybe it is because I am a foreigner, but I couldn't watch and analyze too long some modern arts and old house parts, just like the bathroom. There are 3 levels, and there are rooms where just posters about the architecture and methods. I don't regret this 9 euro, but I thought it would be something amazing (according to the lot of good reviews).

Casa Botines is a must-visit landmark in León, especially for those interested in architecture, history, or the works of Antoni Gaudí. One of only a few Gaudí buildings located outside of Catalonia, Casa Botines stands out with its neo-Gothic façade, pointed towers, and striking stonework—resembling more a medieval castle than a city building. The museum inside offers a well-curated experience that combines art, architecture, and history. Visitors can learn about Gaudí’s vision, the building’s origins as a textile warehouse and bank, and its later restoration. The exhibition includes original sketches, furniture, and informative displays in both Spanish and English, making it accessible to international visitors. There are also temporary exhibitions and a small but interesting art collection on the upper floors. A highlight is the chance to see some of the original architectural elements up close, as well as the preserved office spaces that transport you back in time. The building is also beautifully lit in the evening and worth viewing from the outside, even after hours. Casa Botines isn’t just for architecture enthusiasts—it’s a key piece of León’s cultural heritage and a great stop for anyone wanting to appreciate Gaudí’s lesser-known but equally impressive work.

Panteón Real, attached to the Real Basilica de San Isidoro, is a remarkable site housing royal sarcophagi beneath stunning Romanesque frescoes. The vaults and arches are adorned with colorful biblical scenes, illuminated by poor lighting. Visitors can also explore a small museum showcasing the shrine of San Isidoro and other treasures. Despite the dim lighting, guided tours provide essential insights into this historically significant place.
We took a guided tour in spanish and it was really worth. Really good explanations and interesting things to see.

This is the museum with the magnificent Romanesque fresco - all original dating back to the 11th C. They have free tours on some evenings, which I was lucky enough to be able to join by chance - it was in Spanish but the guide was kind enough to give explanations in English just for me. So why the four stars and not five? Simply because they do not allow photography in the fresco section. I specifically visited Leon to photograph this fresco so I was very disappointed that it wasn't made clear on their website that this is the case. May be they did mention it in Spanish. It is definitely worth a visit, even just to look at the fresco.

Some interesting sights but it didnt float my boat hugely. [Maybe in part because the previous day we visited the collection a the cathedral, which was very striking.] Limited photography (even without flash). León Cathedral, a grand Gothic structure dating back to the 1400s, stands as the spiritual heart of León. Its soaring towers, flying buttresses, and stunning interior make it a premier Gothic masterpiece in Spain. The cathedral's facade boasts a radiant rose window, richly sculpted doorways, and two imposing towers. Inside, visitors can admire an extraordinary collection of stained-glass windows.
Stunning. An incredible cathedral, very easy to just get lost in the beauty and grandeur of it all when touring the interior. You can get that same sense of awe and wonder on the outside as well, but inside is truly majestic. Do not miss this when you are anywhere near Leon.

The audio-tour was cool as well. Just the right amount of detail and explanation of points of interest for my sore feet.

Breathtakingly beautiful! Around £5 to get in, which I think is a steal!!! There is a little cafe on the corner to the right which has the loveliest staff! Go there…. Not the ones opposite the church itself!

Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Located on Mayor Antigua Street, the Catedral de San Antolín is a captivating blend of Visigothic and Romanesque architecture. Originally a 7th-century Visigothic basilica, it was transformed into a Romanesque Cathedral by Sancho III. The cathedral boasts five entrance doors, with the Virgin or Bishop door being particularly noteworthy.
OH WOW what a building , the outside architecture is astounding, I didn’t go in as today I hadn’t time , it’s meant to be the 3rd largest cathedral in Spain and I could believe that very easily. The square in front of the building is so well kept and the spires of the building with thier decorative architecture that dominate this area are simply fantastic, this is a real must visit when in Palencia
Aidan M — Google review
The gothic Cathedral Basilica of Saint Antoninus, dedicated to Saint Antonius of Pampers, is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe (130m x 42m high x 50m wide) similar in size to Cathedral of Reims, and Notre Dame de Paris. It is generally known as “the unknown beauty" because it is not as well known as other Spanish cathedrals, though it has works of art of great value, including a fabulous El Greco: the martyrdom of St. Sebastian from 1579. A curiosity are the stork nests on the tower, so you are constantly followed by the characteristic noisy bill-clattering, which appears to be distant machine gun fire.
Jesper A — Google review
Very impressive and interesting cathedral! Entry is 6 Euros but it is definitely worth it. Being Spain's 3rd biggest cathedral, it offers countless chapels with richly decorated altairs, several choirs, two big naves, a transept and catacombs. The condition is surprisingly good due to excellent maintenance.
Ludowig G — Google review
Very nice building It is worth to look at it from different angles We didn't go in, but situated next to the university and yet in a quiet and peaceful area
Roland L — Google review
Despite the ghastly bling bling in the side chapels and altar this is a rather lovely building. The choir is magnificent on the outside and the organ is fantastic. Great stonework throughout. The small gallery of artwork is well worth a visit, some nice works including a rather homoerotic San Sebastian by El Greco which could have been painted this century.

A really unexpected surprise in Palencia. The province being the realm of the Romanesque, I expected its cathedral to be this style, too. Instead, we came across a fantastic Gothic temple which, unfortunately, we could not visit because it was being restored. We at least enjoyed the awesome exterior.

Cristo Del Otero is a 69-foot cement statue of Jesus Christ, created by Victorio Macho in 1931. It stands on one of the hills surrounding the city, overlooking an old hermitage and a museum at its feet. This colossal construction dominates the entire city and is the main symbol of Palencia capital. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views from the top and admire the impressive artistic style of this third largest Jesus statue in the world.
Stunning Panoramic Views & a Serene Atmosphere Cristo del Otero is a must-visit landmark in Palencia! The towering statue of Christ is impressive, and the panoramic views of the city from the top are absolutely breathtaking. The walk up is short but rewarding, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it a perfect spot to relax and take in the scenery. There's also a small chapel and a museum nearby that provide interesting insights into the history of the monument. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Palencia!

Bodegas Portia

Winery
Food & Drink
Bodegas Portia is an impressive winery located in Ribera del Duero, just a short drive from Madrid. The modern and elegant building, designed by Norman Foster, offers a variety of experiences for visitors. Guests can enjoy wine tastings at the bar downstairs, with tasting serves starting at around 0.60. The winery also features a museum and beautiful facilities.
Fantastic bodega. The architecture was amazing. The wine was excellent and the food in the restaurant first class. We saw the amazing building from the road, dropped in and despite there being no tour in English at that time, Carlos from the front desk took the trouble to show us around. Friendly welcoming staff, great atmosphere, stellar food and wine - definitely worth a visit. Highly recommended
Neville T — Google review
We were really looking forward to visiting this winery, but unfortunately, it turned into a disappointing and frustrating experience. From the moment we arrived, things were off. Despite the restaurant being visibly empty (only one table was full), we were told there were no available tables for dining. It was raining, and yet they insisted we sit outside on the terrace just to have a drink. We weren’t allowed to order any proper food—only tapas were available—which we were thankful for, but the whole situation felt dismissive and unwelcoming. Throughout our time there, the service remained cold and impersonal. No one explained anything about the wines, the food, or the winery itself. We felt completely ignored and unwelcome. It’s honestly the worst service we’ve experienced at a winery or restaurant. We left feeling disrespected and very disappointed. With so many beautiful wineries that value their guests, I’d recommend looking elsewhere for a more genuine and hospitable experience.
Ekaterina S — Google review
Did you know there’s an amazing restaurant in here? The castellano menu is my favorite. But we have tried the other one too during our last visit! Besides being one of the best wine manufacturers in the region (and yet not as popular as other bigger more comercial brands) this winery is a must stop if you are interested in getting to know more and learn about Ribera Del Duero wine region. And then there’s the restaurant… I mean, obviously anything you eat that’s accompanied by their excellent wine is going to taste twice as good. But the real thing is that the quality of the food, the selection of their raw materials, their service and knowledgeable staff makes this restaurant a top option when you are in the area. Their menus come with a generous amount of dishes for the value you pay and the quality you get. And there’s always some good discounts at their wine store downstairs after a good meal.
ENRIQUE C — Google review
Amazing architectural tour of Norman Foster’s genius design… our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, as for the wine, the Verdejo was the best above the two other reds, but that’s individual preference.
Lisbet S — Google review
Pleasant vineyard, with good tasting wine and a beautiful building. Staff member Raquel was particularly welcoming to our tasting request and overall friendly.
Jan F — Google review
Chose this specially as they advertise their gastro bar, and everywhere you look it says open all day. Imagine my surprise when the gastro bar was closed, and the restaurant only available if you made a reservation. Nowhere on their website or publicity does it mention this. Staff were utterly disinterested. AVOID.
Victor G — Google review
A modern, elegant and masterly designed (by no other than Norman Foster) winery with quite good wine, food and staff. From the moment one arrives, parks the car (in the shade), walks to the entrance of this magnificent building, one feels each corner has an ultimate purpose. Produce and show wine. I would recommend to try (possibly buy) the prima and summa wines. Depends on how much you want to spend. On the food menu, the carrillera was excellent.

Dear Family Martinez Zabala By vineyards I hope this comment will help other travelers that come from far away and plan to visit this particular winery Bodega Portia. We travelled from CR and made reservations days before our arrival. And email was sent requiring a change in time since we had a group of 12 and have a tight schedule. That email was never responded. Kept calling to anounce our arrival. We certainly were late at our arrival and as I read later in reviews, it doesn't matter if you are 2 minutes late or 1 hour late. Bodegas Portia has a non flexible policy on time arrival. A very rude woman in front desk simply told us the other people in the tour , have already started the tour. We kindly ask if we could join that "group" and only received a plain and very rude NO since they already started. Soon enough we discovered that all of it was a lie since we found 12 cups on a tasting table untouched, assuming there was no other group joining ours. This woman lied plainly to our face. Resuming all we lost our money, and to compensate from Bodegas Portia we got a 7 minute "tour" from a window to see the cellar and a minimum cup of wine on an empty restaurant. Ill share the pictures of how they "compensated" I think Bodegas Portia and staff have no idea or training in how to treat people on tour companies that come from abroad. No courtesy to far away travelers. If you are reading this, I can suggest other wonderful wineries like MATAROMERA that puts a heart into the experience, Marquez de Riscal, Heras de Cordon. I will never recommend Bodegas Portia to anyone. Bodegas Portia lacks of warmth, heart or passion.

A long way from anywhere, this great Benedictine pile towers over the village around it. The Gregorian chant is past its Grammy-winning glory days, but evening Vespers still attracts a good crowd in summertime. The Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao is a renowned art venue that boasts an extensive collection featuring works by prominent artists such as Velázquez, Goya, and Picasso. The museum also showcases pieces by Basque artists, adding a local touch to its exhibits.
👍🏽 Fantastic FREE museum with mostly modern + some contemporary & renaissance pieces. 1-2 hours. Free large lockers + bathroom downstairs (there’s an elevator, but bathrooms didn’t look accessible). Grab a folding stool on the first floor under the stairs to make your visit more comfortable. If I lived here, I’d come every month! Not recommended for children (at least not this set of exhibits Sep 2025).

Under renovation, the exhibition is limited, but it is free to enter. Apart from a whole section filled with inflated plastic which is unexplained and hazardous to elderly visitors, there are some interesting works and a few masterpieces. A good place to come on a rainy day. Not suitable for children or people who need accessible space. After renovation this will probably change and the experience will be better.
Lighthouse C — Google review
A gem in Bilbao. The Museum of Fine Arts offers a beautifully curated exposition—rich, balanced, and quietly captivating. The galleries flow like chapters in an art book, with works that invite you to pause, breathe, and really look. A refined, elegant space that celebrates art without overwhelming. A wonderful visit. P.s. was inspired to be a bit silly 🤭
O’lena — Google review
In June 2025 the museum was undergoing substantial building work. As a result, only part of the collection was on display. But entry was free, instead of 7 Euros, during the building work. Part of the available display space was taken up with modern art consisting of enormous inflated balloons, each one occupying a whole room. From my point of view this was a waste of the limited available space. However the five rooms devoted to classical paintings, including El Greco and his contemporaries, were very interesting.
Graham G — Google review
The Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao is a nice, smaller museum. The collection wasn’t too impressive, and one installation spread across many rooms felt confusing. That said, the visit is pleasant and can be done in about an hour. Good option if you’re looking for something quieter than the Guggenheim.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a stunning titanium and glass structure designed by Frank Gehry, showcasing major 20th-century artworks. It's located in Bilbao, a city that beautifully blends old and new. The museum is accessible via the unique Zubri Zuri Bridge, which has become an attraction in itself. While visiting, don't miss walking along the River Nervion for breathtaking views of the museum's futuristic architecture.
Such a fantastic showcase of different art forms and a spectacular building. A definite must see when you are in Bilbao. Book tickets in advance for sure as it does get busy, I booked for the first slot at 10am and it was quiet but by the time I got to the end of my visit it was much busier. Can easily spend a couple of hours in the museum itself and more outside in the sculpture gardens and walkways.
David B — Google review
Highlight of our cruise to Spain and Portugal was a visit to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The structure is iconic in itself, made of titanium sheets laid over a free-form pattern. The inner structure is just as amazing in design. Housed within, are notable creations of contemporary art. The large oil painting in black, with a small corner left natural, the work of Robert Motherwell. The labyrinth of huge steel sheets, coiled, eager to welcome curious visitors. I came away wondering, ‘what is art?’ Be sure to enlarge the paper cut-out collage. There are some worthy quotations to remember. A very reasonable 9 euros entrance fee. Great gift shop for a memento. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

Absolutely loved the Guggenheim Bilbao! The architecture alone is breathtaking — you could spend an hour just walking around the building and taking in the curves, reflections, and the river views. Inside, the exhibitions are beautifully curated, modern, bold, and inspiring. Every room feels like a new experience; the whole visit felt smooth and welcoming. A must-see in Bilbao — worth every minute!

Iconic showcase of art in a spectacular building. For someone who is not a big fan of art museums, I found this place very interesting and amusing. Every single room had a unique feature and I didn’t get bored even after spending 1.5hrs in here. A must-see in Bilbao! You can buy ticket online. I got there with 10 groups waiting in front of me to buy tickets so I just quickly bought it online and skipped the long queue. Only takes 2-3 mins max

We visited Friday, September 5, 2025. The building is beautiful. Unique and bold. Really stands out. We spent about 90 minutes here on a Friday afternoon. Well worth it if you are in the area. I loved the large exhibits.
Jason D — Google review
It’s world-famous for a reason! I am in no way well-versed in art but I really enjoyed all 3 floors of the museum. I appreciated the variety of media, artists, eras, and kind of art featured here. I think what made it more fun was how interactive some of them are, and some exhibitions were also larger than life. It featured both big and rising, international and local names in the industry which was a great way to highlight other people in the industry. I appreciated how organized the museum was as well. There was a Yayoi Kusama exhibition, which would normally take forever to see but they planned it very well. It was a really quick few seconds to see it but this made the line go faster and didn’t hold up anyone who wanted to see it. The featured artist at that time was also very talented and fun to see! Lots of interactive and dynamic art featured that changed the experience for the viewer every room we visited. We also didn’t buy tickets ahead and I really thought we missed our chance, but the museum allotted tickets for walk-in visitors. The line went so fast as well which we appreciated a lot. So it was a very pleasant experience!!
Kim M — Google review
The exterior of the museum is phenomenal, truly worth seeing with your own eyes. However, the exhibitions are a hit or miss. Perhaps I had unreasonably high expectations, which ultimately led to my disappointment. I have visited contemporary art museums with better exhibitions in the past, that's all I'm saying!!! The entrance fee is not expensive in all means. 6 euros with a student ID. I stayed here for a bit more than one hour.
Alfi — Google review
The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is an architectural and cultural masterpiece that offers an immersive experience in contemporary art, both for its iconic structure and for the works on display. The Guggenheim in Bilbao, designed by Frank Gehry, is considered one of the most revolutionary architectural works of the 20th century. Its titanium, glass and limestone structure, with curved and fluid shapes, almost looks like an urban sculpture. Visiting the museum is already an artistic experience in itself, even before entering. Inside, the museum houses a vast collection of modern and contemporary art, with works by artists such as Richard Serra, Anselm Kiefer, Cy Twombly, Mark Rothko, Louise Bourgeois and Yves Klein. Among the most famous installations is The Matter of Time by Serra, an immersive path through gigantic steel spirals B. Outside, two works have become symbols of the museum: • Puppy by Jeff Koons: a giant dog covered with fresh flowers. • Maman by Louise Bourgeois: a huge spider-shaped sculpture, powerful and disturbing. The Guggenheim is not just a museum, but a sensory and intellectual experience. It is a place where art dialogues with urban space, and where every corner invites reflection. As a visitor wrote: It's absolutely not true that it's only nice outside. The Guggenheim deserves as much on the outside as on the inside

The house red wine was good and the staff were friendly. However, the food left a lot to be desired. It was so salty and lacked flavour. Can pay by card or cash

Because no table was available I want to try the Pintxos for to-go. Waited to be served for five minutes. Then the waitress sent me to the other side of the counter, where I waited five minutes again. Then I left without any food. They are good at ignoring…
Stefan S — Google review
They are not service minded, they just let you wait on the table ignoring you. The waitress was also very rude, so if you want to be treated well please avoid this place.

Sooo many pintxo to choose from -so many vino tinto and not nearly enough time! Owner /bar was so helpful too. Easy to recommend this bar!
Neil — Google review
Awful attitude of the waiter outside. We had a very hostile welcome and were left to wait for a long time before we were able to get our drinks. Can't comment on the food - we asked if we could order food and the waiter walked away. At which point we decided it was time to leave. Avoid.
Kim S — Google review
Food is genuinely awful. In a city with so much amazing food, do not waste a meal here! Come for a drink in a lovely setting if you must but the food quality is so poor at relatively expensive prices. For example patatas bravas arrives chunky chips and mayo, salted asparagus is cold, watery, mushy white asparagus out of a tin. The pintxos is old, crusty and very basic... They have a nice sounding menu but none of the dishes we wanted (such as velvet crab and grilled squid) were available. Other people around us were also disappointed. Just warning you!
Sarah A — Google review
Smaller selection of pintxos than others in the area and honestly what they had was just “OK”. Gave 3 stars instead of 2 due to location and the food wasn’t terrible. If this is the only table available in the plaza and you only want a seat and cold drink, maybe a snack you might be satisfied here. Also, there are many pictures in this review that I assume are from the place next door which I didn’t try but looked better than Urdina.

Gernikako Batzarretxea

Cultural center
Sights & Landmarks
Government Buildings
Gernikako Batzarretxea, also known as the Provincial Assembly House, is a significant historical site in Gernika. It has been the traditional meeting place for the towns of Bizkaia since ancient times. The assembly hall features a stunning stained-glass ceiling depicting the iconic Tree of Gernika. This tree holds great symbolic importance as it was where Spanish kings used to take oaths to respect Basque autonomy.
The history is probably what initially attracts people to visit but it's become a place well worth visiting in its own right The original devastation which let to Picasso's amazing painting has been replaced by a beautiful town.
VP - — Google review
The Maison des Juntes de Gernika is a remarkable place where history, culture, and tradition come together. Built in 1826 in an elegant neoclassical style, it has served both as a parliamentary seat and a symbolic heart of Basque identity. Inside, visitors can admire portraits of the Lords of Bizkaia, historic paintings, and an atmosphere that reflects centuries of local governance and pride. One of the highlights is the magnificent stained-glass ceiling, added in 1985, which depicts the Tree of Gernika, regional symbols, and important elements of Basque life. Just outside stands the famous Tree of Gernika itself, under which leaders once gathered to affirm the traditional laws of the land—a powerful reminder of unity and resilience. The building is beautifully maintained, free to visit, and offers a rich, immersive experience that leaves a lasting impression on anyone interested in history, architecture, or the unique spirit of the Basque Country.
Paul P — Google review
This was a very beautiful place, especially the stained glass inside. It was interesting to learn a little about the Basque history as well. You should reserve a free entry online before going. We got lucky and there was space for us shortly after we arrived.

For centuries, the municipality of Gernika has been the gathering place of the towns of Bizkaia . In the past, each church used to send its representative there to discuss the common problems of the Lordship of Bizkaia . Since the Middle Ages, these conferences were held next to the Arbola of Gernika and were called the General Assembly of Bizkaia . As time passed, several buildings were built around the Arbola in Gernika, and finally in 1828 the construction of the current Assembly Hall or Juntetxea began. 1876 _ were maintained until the year, in that year the laws that governed the way of life in Bizkaia , that is, the Charters, they were dismantled.
Makis D — Google review
It's a beautiful historical place. The history, the paintings, and the murals are beautiful and fascinating. It's definitely worth a visit if you are in Guernica.
Arunima B — Google review
Beautiful and educational. Events/exhibitions are also held here sometimes. Meetings are still held in the meeting room once a month. Don’t forget to take pictures with the new and old tree of Gernika. As for the old tree, it is customary that visitors go around the tree clockwise.

Museo Cristóbal Balenciaga is a tribute to the renowned fashion designer, showcasing his haute couture creations. Located in an elegant annex of Palacio Aldemar, the museum's modern architecture stands out against its historic surroundings. The museum celebrates the life and work of Cristóbal Balenciaga, a talented designer who gained international fame and dressed iconic figures like Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.
We visited with my wife and our son, who loves art, and we were all impressed. The museum beautifully showcases Balenciaga’s creativity and craftsmanship. The building itself is stunning, and the exhibits are thoughtfully curated. A great stop for anyone interested in fashion, design, or art.

Hugely disappointed Terrible building , rude telephone customer service . Exhibits beautiful but unless you have perfect eyesight very difficult to view clearly , not enough digital interaction to compensate for the low light , the exhibits are all static and much is lost in their extended beauty. Don't make to great an effort to attend , better to catch a Balenciaga exhibit elsewhere . Madrid 2019 had an exhibition that was incredible . If driving go in low season as there little parking , aim for the port.

Enjoyed my hour+ here strolling thru the collections. I was most impressed by the "Balenciaga x Demna" dialogue exhibit -- intriguing to see their work side by side and connect the inspiration Demna took from Balenciaga. Stopping at the museum was a great excuse to also check out the town of Getaria.

The Balenciaga Museum in Getaria is an absolute highlight, especially for admirers of great fashion designers. The concept is perfectly thought out, the exhibits are magnificent, and the overall experience is truly exceptional. Each piece on display reflects craftsmanship, elegance, and timeless design. The museum masterfully combines art, history, and fashion in a way that’s both inspiring and memorable. A wonderful experience and an absolute must-see for anyone who loves fashion.

Spend the day at this museum and around the beautiful port town. Balenciaga was from quite a magical place and the museum is definitely worth the trip. I loved it.

Small, but very interesting. Some interactive option. A lot of example.

I have LOVED this museum. It was a Saturday afternoon and was surprisingly not very crowded, which was perfect for a calm and detailed visit. The current exhibit are very interesting. The main one is about Balenciaga’s designs and innovation, the se one one about his relationship with basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida, and the third one about the frangeances. I wish I could have known in advance that the temperature in the rooms with the clothes would be so low, and I would have better prepared myself. It was crazy cold! Also, the final exhibit about perfumes is very interesting to see, but there are only a few fragrances that you can smell. It would have been amazing to have the possibility of smelling way more fragrances. Toilets are located before entering the exhibit, and at the end of the sixth room. Lockers are provided before entering the exhibit. Museum shop is small but nicely merchandised.

A fabulous beach and boardwalk. Great for surfers. Need to be a good swimmer to manage the surf. Lifeguards were on duty the day I was here. Toilets and showers available. Public parking available in town. Prices vary. Cafes, bars and restaurants are spaced out along the front.

What a lovely beach and it's great for surfing and not so good for swimming unless you are a good swimmer. We would go in up to our waist and enjoy the waves, which could be very strong at times. The sand is fine and nice to walk on.

Lovely beach, loads of cafes and surfers, plenty of toilets and facilities to wash the sand off. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on the beach but they can walk along the promenade with their owners. It's a shame that not even a section of the beach is dog friendly. There also appears to be a nudist section on the far side away from the main town. There is a lot of plastic on the shoreline, it would be good to have some signs up to ask people to pick up 3 pieces of plastic from the beach to encourage people to think about the impact of plastic eye to the sea. Often done in the UK on surfers beaches this has a positive effect and helps clean up the ocean.

Beautiful beach!! No dogs allowed from 6am till 9pm as the sign says. I could not find this info anywhere online so posting it here in case anyone wants to know it as well.

Probably the best beach we've been to in a long time with everything you need from showers to changing rooms and clean toilets with even places to wash the sand off of your feet and keep your dog some water. so clean

Be careful, waves is not the main danger for swimmers, there are strong rip currents taking you out the cost. Swimmer should be aware and escape sideways.😉
