The Isle of Gold, also known as Chrysi Island, is a small and uninhabited island located near Ierapetra in Crete. The island is accessible by boat and boasts beautiful white sand beaches with crystal clear aquamarine waters that resemble those of the Caribbean. The island's name stems from the golden color of its sands.
A memorable stay, Greece is always a good idea. I traveled in November and I can't tell you how pleasant the weather was. Also, it's much less crowded than in summer. The people are friendly, the food is good, and the water temperature is just right even in November. And there's no shortage of escursions.

Absolutely stunning beach but couldn’t go into the water as there are quite big stones to get over, saw quite a few people fall, the walk to actually get to the beach is quite a way for someone with mobility issues and in that heat it’s not great tbh ….. glad I saw it but had I known all this before I went I would have avoided it
Missy 2 — Google review
Beautiful place to visit for the gradient colors of the water and for the interesting shell beach. Many baby shells there but unfortunately you cannot take them as souvenirs because it’s a protected zone.
Stefan H — Google review
Nice strip of beach, 15 euros with very you two loungers and an umbrella (there is also a euro tourist tax per person). There is a bar on the beach. Sea is lovely and warm, with no sea life to read on apart from some very small fish here and there. Loses a star for the state of the toilets, not quite festival bad, but not good. It's suggest going on the ferry, toilets there are very good.
DARREN B — Google review
Nice place to visit. The golden beach is beautiful, but you have to take with you something to eat and drink. Also here you can find a local who sell cold drinks. Have some ice chest where he keep the drinks. For 1 small beer and one coke i paid 7 euro. You don't need necessary the umbrela because there are a lot of threes under you can seat. The color of the water is one of the best around crete. The trip from Ierapretra is around 1 hour. If you don't get food and drink with you, it's possible to buy from the boat at good prices.
Marius G — Google review
Beautiful beach Rock and shell formation is very unique and can be sore on feet. On golden sands turn right, walk past everyone a couple hundred metres and I found a secluded little area.

I enjoy Chrisi. I keep coming back since 7 years now. I particularly enjoy the hotness. And nothing gives me moar pleasure than lying somewhere on Chrisi, enjoying the view.

Amazing place. It is like paradise on earth. Pure sand, turquoise water. Interestingly, you can sleep in your tent. A place that must be seen. There are sun loungers, umbrellas and toilets on the spot, bar with drinks and some food. Descent into the water is a bit rocky, you have to be careful.

Παραλία Ληστής

Beach
Outdoor Activities
Listis Beach is a fantastic destination for anyone seeking a serene and picturesque seaside experience. This beach stands out for its clear and warm waters, making it an ideal spot for swimming and relaxing. One of the highlights is the tranquil atmosphere; the beach is not crowded, providing a calm and peaceful environment perfect for unwinding. Additionally, its proximity to the village makes it convenient for visitors to access local amenities. For the more adventurous, the rocks at Listis Beach offer a great opportunity for jumping into the water, adding a touch of excitement to your visit. The absence of wind further enhances the experience, allowing you to enjoy the beach without any disturbances. However, there are a couple of minor drawbacks to consider. The water can be a bit wavy at times, which might not be ideal for everyone. Additionally, the sand and stones can get very hot under the sun, so it's advisable to bring appropriate footwear to avoid discomfort. Overall, Listis Beach is a wonderful spot for a day by the sea, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and fun in a beautiful setting.
Volodymyr C — Google review
5 minutes hiking from the car park. The path is quite steep but manageable. The beach is secluded so bring drinks/snacks with you. During the middle of the day is getting really hot even the wind is hot.
Alexandru S — Google review
It's not just a beautiful and cozy beach, it's just a beautiful place. If you drive by, you will notice how a small rock crashes into the sea from the car, even small caves are visible from the way. A small parking lot will definitely invite you to stop. You walk a little bit, 20-30 meters, and you will see this place, this beach as we saw it. The beach itself is located below, but the descent to it and the ascent is simple and it will not be difficult for you. We were going to another beach, but we stayed here and those two or three hours that we spent here gave us great pleasure. There are few people here and you will feel very comfortable. The sea is beautiful, it seems that between the rocks protruding from the water, the sea warms up more and the water becomes warmer. And the view of the sea, that of the rock, with its small caves, will not leave you indifferent. If you are in the south, be sure to visit this place, it's worth it!
Io L — Google review
Visited this beach with my partner. Was really secluded, with trees to provide some shade and a pleasant sea to swim in. We went late afternoon, but I imagine would be very hot in the middle of the day
Daniel G — Google review
Very private pebble beach with crystal clear water. There is a sign to the beach on the main road, so it is easy to find. The road down to the beach is rocky but worth the effort. There is not much shade so be prepared.
Johanna M — Google review
Amazing beach , crystal clear water , perfect location, the way down to the beach is easy, there is a rocky, bumpy path but it's no big deal. Just shade is not sufficient there so be prepared before you go.
Manos K — Google review
Easily reachable by car, needs a short (5 mins) hike to reach from the parking spot. The landscape is certainly interesting. You can climb most of the rocks in the sea and jump off them.
Manos G — Google review
Very nice rocky beach with clean water and natural beauty. You can park next to the road at the parking place . The beach is 200 metes down after you walk a little tricky path but the place is beautiful.

Παραλιακό Καφενείο

$$$$affordable
Restaurant
If you're looking for a delightful dining experience in Myrtos, look no further than Παραλιακό Καφενείο. This charming beachside café offers a warm and inviting atmosphere that feels just like home. Guests rave about the friendly service, with staff members who greet you with genuine smiles and make every visit memorable. The menu features an array of fresh, traditional Cretan dishes that change weekly, ensuring there's always something new to try.
Genuine traditional Cretan food by the sea, with friendly staff - specially the owner- that serves at the end of the meal free watermelon! We ordered small fish (gavros) and kalamarakia coupled with greek salad, tzatziki and fries.. delicious!!
Vas V — Google review
Nice, calm place with very good food quality. We have visited this place many times.
Mira T — Google review
Dear friends, I thank you for the wonderful relaxing moments in your restaurant. Your restaurant doesn't have Michelin stars, but your food is even tastier and the service nicer. You give your guests the comfort of home that I was blown away by. Your smiles are very sweet and make me come back to you every day of my stay in Mirtos. Your boss is a very nice person full of energy and you can see that he manages his team to the satisfaction of the customers. I'll never forget you, big boss. God willing, I will return to Crete and wave to you again from the balcony. Anna from Czech Republik
Anny O — Google review
The Beach cafe has been one of my favorite restaurant bars. The service is good and friendly and the food excellent. The menu usually changes a little over the week and sometimes you are given a traditional Cretan dish that you didn't know existed.
Dave B — Google review
Quite unfriendly. We asked about the price of the sunbeds, they told us its free as we ate there the evening before and we had ordered iced coffee that day already. A few days later, when we arrived for a second time, they immediately came to us and told us we didn’t pay the last time we used the sunbeds, even though the other day we spend all day there and nobody told us anything. And even if they would have told us, you would imagine 40 euros for a meal is more than enough for two sunbeds. We didn’t want to discuss it, so we just paid another 15 euros, left and never went there again. Anyways, there are much better beaches about 20 minutes to the east, where you don’t have to pay for the beds and the food is delicious there as well.
Gigi J — Google review
This restaurant seems to repose only on there location. Horrible tourist salad. I took a salad it was 10€, polite service but not friendly, the salad was horrible tuna from conserves, with horrible anchovies, and a commercial ketchup mayo dressing. I hope that there are better at cooking fish.
Jérôme M — Google review
Best cafe in Myrtos. We had Salad, octopus, beer and raki. Everything was great and the staff super friendly. Sunbeds included in the lunch bill wich wasn't high. Good job!
Alvise M — Google review
Some of the nicest staff in all of Myrtos. Great, fresh and tasty food for a reasonable price. The dining area has a great atmosphere with enough room at any time while the beach area provides a comfortable and relaxing experience morning or afternoon.

Koutsounari Long Beach

Beach
Outdoor Activities
Koutsounari Long Beach, located about 38 kilometers southeast of Agios Nikolaos, is a stunning stretch that spans approximately 5 kilometers. This beach stands out for its serene atmosphere and never feels overcrowded, making it an ideal spot for those seeking tranquility away from the bustling northern beaches of Crete. The combination of soft grey sand and crystal-clear azure waters creates a picturesque setting perfect for relaxation.
Soft sand, clear water, vast space, colorful pebbles, best restaurants. Options for organized areas or unexploited areas.
Michail P — Google review
Súper friendly beach and not so crowded in the middle of the day. In the afternoons there are a lot of people specially families. The only difficulty is if you find wind because it gets wild. Otherwise beautiful coastal area 🌙
Kiriaki C — Google review
Wonderful beach, you can choose either to stay by yourself or to go to the sunbeds. Gorgeous sea and pebbled beach. Unfortunately the surroundings are still dirty, with trash alongside the road.
Iris L — Google review
It is definitely a long beach! Mostly shingle, finer towards the eastern end. Easy access and parking in the middle section, with sunbeds and umbrellas around a beach bar. Water sports are also available. There is also access via a fairly steep track at the western end. Smaller waves than expected for a beach this open, but there are better beaches for swimming and walking. There may be naturists on the western section.
Anthony C — Google review
Really long beach, beautiful pebbles, clear waters, kid friendly
Athena P — Google review
Nice beach with nice water. And quiet beach
Iulian T — Google review
Great beach where you can be just quiet, without all the touristic crazyness in Northern Crete beaches. Loved to swing in those waters, and the bar over there is great👌

Towering gorge with 150m-deep walls, plus a river, waterfalls & rocky pools, popular for trekking.
Beautiful place, but rocks are slippery and trail is quite hard. Proper hiking shoes are a must to make it safe. You need to be accustomed to hiking in rocky places, using rotten ladders and ropes. Definitely not for small children. This place requires a bit more matainance, but it's wilderness can also be appealing to some.

Really beautiful place if you have really bad legs it would be really hard to do but but got good legs it amazing places to visit
Undaunted-Ares — Google review
Great hike, not too easy but also not too challenging. Easy to get to from Lerapetra
Guus H — Google review
Great hike with moderate climbing (you clime over rocks, no gear needed). We walked the canyon for roughly one hour and then turned back around. Swimming/cool down possible.
Rieke S — Google review
(Translated by Google) Very nice hiking area with wonderful views and small waterfalls. Be sure to wear non-slip shoes as the tour can be a bit demanding. Sometimes you climb over large boulders and sometimes you walk through the water. In my opinion, not suitable for children.
Yvonne S — Google review
(Translated by Google) You have to experience this if you are on holiday in Crete! There is a small parking lot at a small barrier - pay attention to the signs towards the canyon. The hiking trail begins there. We went through shallow water pretty quickly - so wear sturdy shoes that can get wet! You basically have to work your way through the gorge; there are no signs. There are ropes and/or steps in some places. It can be quite difficult for smaller people (but it is doable from around 1.50 m). At some point we turned right into the forest, where there were large concrete slabs. Then we went through the forest towards the serpentine road to get back to the parking lot. Then that also matched the stated duration of the hike (about 2.5 hours all together). We were there in July, so the water wasn't too high and was a welcome way to cool off!
Janine T — Google review
(Translated by Google) A real insider tip in the east of Crete. Great hike with some climbing and water crossings. We went through it in mid-October and the water level was actually perfect for us to have a bit of fun. We even had a small waterfall where you could refresh yourself briefly. The gorge was one of our highlights on vacation.
Haski_01 — Google review
(Translated by Google) An adventure in itself. The journey alone was an adventure, as the last 25 minutes of the journey from the north coast lead through small, single-lane, tarred roads. You come out at a barrier where you can park in shady places. Unfortunately, in October 2023 we were unlucky that the gorge is currently dry, but that doesn't make it any less spectacular. The climb through the gorge is possible over large, mostly slippery stones and sometimes steep passages with holding ropes. Once at the top, we head back through olive fields on the road to the barrage. All in all a 2.5 hour hike. Wear sturdy shoes and in my opinion, not for small children.

Relaxed rooms & suites, some with sea views, in a seasonal resort offering a spa & dining.
Clean spacious rooms, good breakfast, multiple pools, the sea shore is 100m away (and downstairs). Shallow sandy beaches are perfect for children. Rather far from Heraklion airport: about 2 hours on car/bus.
Vadim Z — Google review
Stayed in one of the Villas. Lots and lots of ants in the room, -everywhere-, we addressed this to the reception but no action was taken except coming down to swipe them up with cleaning tools. The ants were back again the day after. Same in the ajoining rooms. Otherwise great stay for families. Breakfast/lunch/dinner in buffé restaurant was great and the beach was really excellent. Pool is good, possible to get in touch with hotel doctor if needed.

We spent one week from 7. august until 14 august 2025. Sun Wing is a great hotel and concept! Nice pools and beautiful beaches. The staff has been excellent, especially due to our special needs for food without eggs, nuts and gluten.
Kim W — Google review
We had the room under the storage station, and every morning the garbage trucks were making noises and we woke up because of the noise they were making, and we complained about the situation, and they didn't find any solution, so we had to stay in that room, and our vacation was less than we expected. The cleaning service was pretty good.

Best holiday in a long time. We spent a week in early June in an appartement. Huge value for money. Nice rooms, large terrace, a/c in every room. Cleaning 5 days in a week and fresh towels. Perfect Small kitchen but got the job done! We'll return! 🤞

Quite far from town. Not many prioer taverns near to find options for dinner. More after walkin 2-3km. Old style airconditioning that stops and starts. You get hot and cold multiple times during a night. Cleaners are behind door asking at 9am if they can come and clean.

Mazida Ammos beach

Beach
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Mazida Ammos beach, the largest of Xerokampos beaches in Crete, offers a truly exotic experience with its pristine and fine sand and aquamarine waters. The bay is sheltered by the cape Trachilos, ensuring calm waters. Visitors praise the shallow turquoise water that allows for easy swimming and relaxation even at a distance from the shore. The descent to the beach is described as breathtaking, with narrow winding roads adding to the adventure of reaching this stunning location.
This is my favorite beach from all Crete. The sand is so soft and the water so clear and blue, also not deep. Plus the view to get there is great if you come from the mountain area.
Andreea I — Google review
Beautiful beach, clear water, few people only in october. Nice road to there. 17€ umbrella. Little shop on beach..coffe and some sandwich available. No toilet!..so where they all go?
Raul K — Google review
Awesome 👍!! If this scale would have six stars I would give 10 stars!!! Caribic beach in Greece (only palms to imagine). Lovely beach, smooth sand, turquoise water, no deep water= perfect place for families with children. Moreover we came from the South so we went over the hills. From the top of the hills there is a breathtaking view on the beach and surroundings! This is really something special. If you are on Crete you should not miss this unbelievable beach 😉😎
Stanislav P — Google review
The whole eastern side of Crete is full of excellent beaches. This one is less frequented and you can have part of it for yourself. The waters are crystal clear and the colors verge on heavenly blue.
Nikos P — Google review
Best beach in East Crete. Full sand, sea cristal clear.
Slavko V — Google review
I loved the beach in the past years but been there today and I don’t know what’s going on there, but there were so many wasps. You barely can sit for some minutes before being attacked by one. Left earlier because it was not relaxing at all. Never had that in Crete, and I am coming here for many years.
Manja H — Google review
Two loungers under an umbrella on the beach (with WiFi - there’s no phone signal here) €25. Small snack caravan for drinks and pastries. Free easy parking. Two showers. Sand, gently slopes into crystal clear sea. One of the greatest beaches in Crete - simple but stunning for it. Amazing drive through the mountains to reach it.

Domaine Paterianakis- Κτήμα Πατεριανάκη

Wineries & Vineyards
Domaine Paterianakis, a boutique family winery located near the village of Melesses in the heart of the Heraklion wine region, is run by two sisters who are pioneers of organic farming. They experiment with local varieties and natural winemaking styles, such as skin contact whites. The winery offers exceptional Vidiano in their natural wine line called 3,14 (Pi), known for its honey-like taste.
We had an incredible visit to Domaine Paterianakis Winery — truly a gem nestled in the hills of Crete! The term “Domaine” refers to a winery that grows its own grapes and produces wine on-site, ensuring full control over quality from vineyard to bottle. And it absolutely shows here. Their selection of natural and traditional wines was outstanding — each one beautifully crafted and full of character. Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or just curious, you’ll find something to love. Our tasting experience was made even more special by Kostas, our gracious and knowledgeable host, and Niki, one of the owners, who brought everything to life with her passion and storytelling. The views over the rolling vineyards and mountains are breathtaking and make the perfect backdrop for sipping world-class Cretan wine. This is a must-visit spot for anyone exploring Crete. Domaine Paterianakis delivers a truly authentic and unforgettable experience. Highly recommended!
Robert W — Google review
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Domaine Paterianakis, where we had a lunch with wine pairings and were offered a tour of the cellar to learn more about the production. I appreciate that the pairings were flexible based on our tastes and the kinds of wines we generally prefer. The food was excellent and homemade and the wines were high quality. Niki was a delight and obviously takes great pride in her family's business. We did not choose to ship wine since we have a wine suitcase, but it is possible to ship to some states in the U.S. and they have a lot of information available to help you with this! Overall a great experience and we would happily return on a future visit to Crete!
Emily H — Google review
A fantastic discovery! We’ve tried many Cretan wines over the years, but the wines at Paterianakis Winery are truly among the best. The terrace offers a stunning view over the vineyard — the perfect place to enjoy a tasting. We were especially impressed by the red wines, which reminded us of fine French wines — something quite rare for us, as we usually don’t enjoy Greek reds. Wonderful atmosphere, excellent quality, and a must-visit for every wine lover on Crete!
Tina W — Google review
We had a wonderful wine tasting experience here! The quality and variety of local wines were truly impressive. From the very beginning, we felt a warm and genuine welcome, and the explanations given by our host were amazing. What makes it even more special: the winery is fully run and managed by women. Highly recommended!

From the water to the wine & raki, I was completely impressed by these wines. I went in a little skeptical about the organic side of it but they had a perfect balance and blew me away! Each wine is unique and delicious and I will definitely come back to purchase their wines. The view is breathtaking and the service top notch. Thank you again for a lovely tasting & welcome.

A really love vineyard with high quality organic and natural wines. The hosts are welcoming, knowledgeable and very friendly. It is a family run business, and is one 1 of 2 domaine vineyards on Crete. I would recommend having some nice food there to pair with the wine tasting

Incredible winery worth a visit! My husband and I were traveling in Crete from the US and visited in June 2025. The location is breathtaking, and so are the wines! The staff here are incredibly knowledgeable and are happy to answer any questions you may have. We did a tasting on the patio and enjoyed the incredible views of the vineyard. I will absolutely be returning here and ordering more bottles of wine soon.

Lyrarakis Winery & Tasting Room is a family-owned wine estate located in the mountainous village of Alagni in Crete. With over 60 years of experience, it is known for reviving and preserving local grape varieties such as Dafni, Plyto, Vilana, Kotsifali, and Mandilari. The winery offers outdoor tasting experiences beneath a pergola with stunning mountain views and vineyard landscapes.
As a wine lover and wine snob I always love to try and visit a local vineyard when I travel. After a bit of research I found this place, got in touch with then and as well as booking a tour and tasting they put me in touch with a great taxi company who provides us return transport as a fair price. The tour was short with some good information before we moved to the tasting. The setting and views are lovely and food was good. We ended up trying 9 different varieties of wine, my only complaint would be that I would have liked a bit of a heavier pour on each one ha! If you like wine you should visit.
James G — Google review
We discovered this winery by chance and were so glad we stopped. Even without a booking, they quickly arranged a tour for us – we only waited about 15 minutes. The introduction about the winemaking process and local grape varieties was fascinating. The wine tasting was fantastic – five different wines served in a beautiful pergola with stunning views. The food was also delicious, and the service was outstanding. A wonderful experience with warm hospitality – highly recommended!

I have visited this place for two different events, one being a wedding. Lyrarakis winery is one of the best in Crete and it's always a pleasure to taste their wines. The events were well organised and the venue is ideal for such a celebration. A little more attention to detail is needed, such as ironing the tablecloths.

Very cool Wine-Tasting with really gentle people, describing you the different flavours of the wine. We were there when it was the last opening day of the Winery and they started to grill meat which they served us too while tasting the dark red wine. Really Nice - thank you 😊👌

Fantastic experience. We took the picnic option which was well worth the money. We treated like VIPs and taken to a lovely quiet site for our tasting. Wine was excellent - bought 12 bottles for the villa!!
David S — Google review
We visited this winery for the picnic package. When we arrived we were offered two glasses of wine to start the tour, the tour was very informative. The best part was the picnic where we were treated like VIP’s, we had our own little spot in the vineyard to sample wines and food. Really unforgettable experience and highly recommend.

We came without any reservation, and after they say we need to wait 1 hour for any chance to stay until they confirm is there any free table. After negative news for us, they gave us bottle of there vine to taste, with all smile and apologies for trouble. Massive respect to them, and next time we will come more prepared for sure.
Goran S — Google review
I visited this vineyard as part of a bachelorette celebration with a group of 8 women, and it was truly an unforgettable experience! From the moment we arrived, the setting was absolutely stunning. Lush vines, beautiful views, and countless picture-perfect spots that made for amazing group and individual photos. We started with a guided tour of the vineyard and winery, where we learned about the entire winemaking process, including a fascinating explanation about the barrels and aging. Our guide was awesome, extremely knowledgeable, engaging, and had a great sense of humor, which made the experience even more enjoyable. After the tour, we did the picnic experience, and the food was beyond amazing. We were served a generous spread that included warm pita, a variety of cheeses, rice/meat stuffed in leaves/flowers, crispy fried zucchini balls, and a unique dessert made with cheese stuffed in pita and sweetened with syrup. Sooo good! The wine tasting was also super fun. We tried a great selection of wines including white, rosé, red, and a sparkling wine, which ended up being everyone’s favorite. Each wine was thoughtfully explained, and the quality was exceptional. We ended up leaving with about 8 bottles (possibly more!) to take home—more than enough for our group of eight, that was included in our experience. The entire day was full of laughter, amazing food and wine, and stunning scenery. It was the perfect combination of fun, relaxation, and a bit of education about the winemaking process. This vineyard experience definitely set the tone for a memorable weekend and was one of the highlights of our trip. Highly recommend for any group looking for a unique and joyful outing!

Voulisma Beach, also known as Istro Beach, is a popular destination with its white sandy shores and stunning turquoise waters. This organized beach attracts families and water sports enthusiasts alike. Located near the bustling city of Agios Nikolaos, it's easily accessible by bus. The semi-circular cove offers swimming, umbrella rentals, and boating opportunities. Visitors can combine their beach trip with a visit to the charming capital of the Lassithi region.
Absolutely fabulous! I loved it. I went to Elafonisi too, but this gives me way more of that perfect beach vibe. There are three or four small beaches that, in my opinion, are better than the big one that’s on the right. A MUST!
Meloquence 7 — Google review
Beautiful turquoise beach, but very narrow with almost no space for towels. Sunbeds & umbrella cost €30. Stunning from above, but the water was full of plastic — the dirtiest I’ve seen in Greece.
Alexandru S — Google review
Amazing beach! I’d recommend it to everyone. It’s even great for snorkeling. The beach strip is a bit narrow, but still large enough to enjoy. I wouldn’t suggest renting a sun lounger; it’s much nicer to just relax on your towel. Prices for jet skis and the banana boat are far too high, but apart from that this is truly an AMAZING beach, one of the best I’ve ever been to.
Damian P — Google review
A beautiful beach that we visited twice in a week. The first day was sunny but windy, the second day was calm but a bit cloudy. The sea is clear and quite shallow for a good way out so suitable for kids. It was the end of tge season so very quiet. We parked right down next to the sea on the left hand side, but not many spaces.
Mr B — Google review
Great location, but definitely not worth paying €30 for sunbeds. We didn’t try the service because the price felt like outright exploitation. The beach is completely covered with sunbeds and no free space is left for free swimmers.
D D — Google review
One of my favourite beaches on Crete, super clear clean water. Lovely restaurant above too, a must if your staying in area.
Stephen G — Google review
One of the most beautiful beaches in Crete — and, at the same time, a sad example of how quickly people can destroy nature. Positive points: Fantastic view... and that's about it. Negative points: The main beach is just a very narrow strip of sand, almost entirely covered with sunbeds. Not only are the prices quite high, but if you don't arrive early, you risk not finding a free spot. The beach is littered with small pieces of plastic. On windy days (like the one when we visited), the waves are very strong, making swimming almost impossible. Additional suggestion: If you're looking for a quieter area, go to the left side of the beach, where the shoreline forms some natural booth. There, you'll find a private beach with sun loungers (although the prices are pretty high) as well as enough space to lay your towel.
Catalin H — Google review
Voulisma Beach has white sand and fantastic crystal clear turquoise and blue waters. It’s no less beautiful than famous Balos beach in the west. You can enjoy water sports like water skiing. Prices are affordable. 2 sun-beads and umbrella are 15 euros.

The Gorge of the Dead, steeped in history and natural beauty, offers an unforgettable hiking experience. This scenic 4km trail begins at Ano Zakros and winds its way down to the charming seaside village of Kato Zakros. The journey starts with a thrilling descent into the canyon, where towering rocks frame your path before you reach the serene riverbed leading to the bay.
Lovely, peaceful and relaxing walk. Start at the beach and work your way up to the mountain village. ~ 2.5 hrs round trip. There were lots of flowers, butterflies and goats when I visited.
Jennifer W — Google review
We walked from Zakros beach up the hill towards the Xeropotamas gorge, which gives you 360° views. The walk uphill is marked with red dots on rocks; not always that easy to see, but you'll get there! The Xeropotamas Gorge ends up in the Dead Gorge, which you follow then right back to the beach. We preferred to do it this way instead of going the most used way to enter the Dead gorge more inland, and return via the road. This loop walk took us 3hrs 30 minutes.
Jo D — Google review
We started from the beach and turned around about 2.7km in. Great scenery but keep your dog on the leash because wild goats will make it go crazy 😂
Dolores S — Google review
Great Hike, rugged scenery. Not too difficult. Took us about 70 minutes to walk through the gorge from entrance B to Kato Zakros. Some nice Tavernas at the end for refreshments. There is a bus a couple times a day to take you back to your car or there were taxis. We chose to walk back which was also not too difficult.
Michaela ( — Google review
This is a really beautiful canyon/ ravine/gorge. I would recommend parking nearby the minoan Palace complex and walking up the ravine for about 2 mi or so and then return. The path is not steep and very well set up but it is rocky and rough in places. The sides of the gorge are spectacular and change in the sunlight as you walk up the gorge. They're a remarkable large caves up in the walls of the canyon.
Toby R — Google review
This is an amazing walk! You pass by high trees with enormous ranked steams, while you walk along old and new water supply pipes between heavy rocks. There is a little river running down the valley, which you have to cross a few times. On the way, you will find small bathing places below huge trees. In my opinion, it is best to start at the first sign to the valley if you drive the road from Zarkos to Kato Zarkos. After the sign post showing "George", drive the road down to another sign which leads to the right. Once on the gravel path you can drive about 200 m further down where you will find a small parking space. From here you will reach Kato Zarkos in approx. 2 hours, depending on your speed.
Claude F — Google review
We started from the beach in Kato Zakros and hiked a loop which took us around 4 h. First we walked through the gorge and then didn’t go up to the entrance in Zakros but instead continued towards Xeropatamos and came back to Kato Zakros over the hills where we had beautiful views. We sometimes lost the marked path on the way but always found it back thanks to gps.
Mareike L — Google review
We did it from the very beginning in Kato Zakros to Zakros, and back. Easy hike, nice nature, even on a hot day it is managable. Take enough water with you and you can refresh yourself in Zakros as well. The end of the gorge is through olive fields and it is nice 🥰. Funny fact: we went for orange juice to Hotel Zakros (rooms and restaurant) and when we asked for toilet, the owner said: room 105… 😂. The whole place looks like from the 80’s and reminded me to the movie Psycho 😱😁. Forever memory 😊. When we git back to Kato Zakros, we had lunch in Akrogiali and it was super delicious 🥰

Lake Voulismeni in Agios Nikolaos, Crete is a popular tourist destination with a picturesque setting. According to legend, it is believed that the goddess Athena bathed in its waters. The lake is surrounded by charming tavernas where visitors can savor Cretan specialty dishes such as slow-cooked goat stew.
Very nice lake, especially during the night you can take some great pictures there. On one spot the rock and the water is illuminated with a purple light. This makes it look very cool during the night. There is also a small chapel next to the lake.

Lake Voulismeni in Agios Nikolaos is a charming and peaceful spot right in the heart of the town. Surrounded by cafes and restaurants, it offers a relaxing atmosphere with beautiful views.
Monika T — Google review
Wow. Simply amazing. Lake Voulismeni is the heart of the tourist town of Agios Nikolaos. If you enjoy the hustle and bustle of crowds, you can come here either for shopping or to eat at one of the lakeside terraces. If you prefer peace and quiet, the rocks around the lake are the perfect place to admire the light show from a distance. And if you’d like to dine somewhere calm, away from the noise of the streets between the lake and the sea, you’ll find a few secluded restaurants at the top of the rocks — where you can enjoy both the tranquility and the view. As a general rule, these restaurants tend to be a bit more expensive than the tavernas below. As a curiosity, the lake is no longer really a lake. In the mid-19th century, a powerful earthquake caused several surrounding rocks to collapse, one of which blocked the spring that fed it. Without fresh water, the beautiful lake became known as the “stinking lake,” so the Turkish governor of the island ordered a canal to be dug to the sea to renew the water. And, despite local legends, it's not bottomless either: the maximum depth is almost 50 meters (which is impressive anyway).

The farm also offers tours of its groves and production facilities, complete with tastings, as well as classes in cheese-making and Cretan cooking.
Everything was great! Maybe only the self paced tablet guide was a not so great, the machine voice reading the text was a bit dull. We had a small live presentation at the press, thats was awesome. The staff is very friendly, the produce is very tasty.
Dans V — Google review
amazing place we booked our tickets for three hour session to milk a goat and make a cheese learn about olives and do a cooking session. It seemed quite expensive when you look at it on the face of the ticket €65 however it was worth every penny we got to eat the food. It was amazing what we learn about the goats and the cheese and all about olives. Highly highly recommend it worth a lot more than €65 people unbelievably friendly lots of other things to see and to do. there’s a shop there with products in it lots of them made by them there and there’s free tasting is of honey and olive oil and other products.
Steven D — Google review
We had booked the olive oil production workshop and had a very insightful and lovely time! We learned about olive trees, the history of the trade and the harvest until we got our hands dirty to actually grind some olives and press them in their press! Feel very honoured they let us touch this piece of history - was certainly an experience! We also got to take a look at some local plants like dittany, carub and aloe, we tasted some olives and raki, all while learning about the meaningful role of olive oil on the island. After the official part of our workshop we got to taste all kinds olive oil, olives, vinegards, carub products, etc in their shop and could even get more info. They are a family farm and offer all kinds of other experiences as well, like cooking or pottery and honestly I love how they made such a business out of the place about their familiy's culture and heritage. Everyone was very friendly and caring to share their knowledge. You could also wander the grounds after and it's a really lovely place. Of course the workshop wasn't super cheap but totally worth the experience and I would also recommend just to visit and take the little tour.
Sloth F — Google review
Absolutely brilliant! We came to learn more about olive oil production but we got so much more? From history to tasting, learning about quality of oil and leaving with incredible products such as olive paste and raki! I wish I could be there every day, it's incredible

Such lovely people who gave us a very warm welcome and explained about their family farms history. We had tablets with an English commentary to explain the different parts of the site. There are so many lovely things available to buy you at reasonable prices. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit and learnt alot too.

Amazing experience! We did the e-tour for €7 each which was well worth the money - able to tour the farm at your own pace and learn lots of interesting information about olives, cheese and wine! Staff are very friendly and helpful, and the shop has lots of great organic produce from the farm to taste and buy! Would highly recommend visiting!
Monica G — Google review
A wonderful little place and a 'must do' if you're in the area. You can go in for free but please support them by at least paying the €7 (per group) to borrow a tablet for a self guided tour. The staff are lovely and do talks in bits of the farm, where you'll also get to meet the chickens and goats. You can also book extras such as cooking lessons. And best of all, there's loads to taste and try for free in the gift shop - olive oil, honey, carob, balsamic vinegar, raki (the honeyed raki is amazing!), and health and beauty products. We ended up buying quite a few things and were tempted by even more (prices are very reasonable but if you take cash there's a discount). Honestly can't rate them highly enough 😊

Richtis Gorge, also known as Faraggi tou Richti, is a popular hiking destination in the eastern part of Crete. The 2.5-mile rugged trail leads to a scenic gorge with a stream, waterfall, and rich wildlife. The lush green state-protected park extends from Exo Mouliana village to Richtis Beach and features ruins of old water mills and cottages along the banks of the stream.
Unexpected to find such a gorge on Crete. It feels like you are walking in a tropical forest. It's beautiful. Even on a hot day it's nice to walk, due to the shade of all the trees. Be prepared for the many steps and rocks you have to pass and make sure you do not walk unoticed along the big waterfall. It's worth it to start from the main road and walk by the old bridge and do a loop through the gorge and olive fields.
Zany R — Google review
Richtis Gorge is a beautiful hike with lush scenery and a peaceful atmosphere, but I was a bit underwhelmed by the waterfall—it didn’t have much water when I visited. As for Richtis Beach at the end of the trail, it was a bit of a letdown. The shore is covered in stones, making it uncomfortable for swimming or relaxing. Worth the walk for nature lovers, but don’t expect a great beach day at the end.
Tina W — Google review
A beautiful trail I would rate at a medium make sure you have good shoes. Sandals will just make your life miserable and sneakers won’t be any better. Proper hiking shoes will be very helpful and make your life easier. Give yourself a proper two hours starting from the top about an hour if you start from the bottom, but there’s hardly any parking spots on the bottom.
MobyOne50 — Google review
Quite an easy hike towards the waterfall and the sea. There are stairs or ropes for the most difficult passes. It’s 80 minutes walk from the bridge to the waterfall. The nature is beautiful and you hike mostly in the shade of the trees. You get to see two old water mills on the way (in ruins). There is a 5-euro fare.
S G — Google review
A nice walk from the beach to the waterfall and back. The path is not difficult, but make sure to bring water. The waterfall and the lake are very refreshing in the heat.
Gonzik A — Google review
This gorge is very pretty and gentle. No real challenge for most although you can get out of breath on some parts. Approx 7km each way. Nice picnic area at the end with fresh water. A nice spot to strip off and cool down with a swim in the sea.

Her er en korrekturlæst og flydende version af din tekst. Jeg har bevaret din tone, men rettet grammatiske fejl og forbedret klarhed og læsbarhed: ⸻ Corrected Version: Quite a nice hike, but I would recommend wearing proper footwear—not flip-flops, as some suggest are okay. I managed the hike in sneakers, which was doable, but be aware that some rocks are very slippery. It was a beautiful hike where I saw different kinds of fruits, flowers, plants, and even frogs or toads. I also spotted two eels in the small lakes, which I didn’t expect at all. I started from the top, where there’s a small parking area next to the main road, and walked down to the shore, then back up again. I think you can also drive down and do the hike the other way around, but the road is a bit bumpy. A car suited for off-road driving would probably be best, although I did see regular rental cars parked at the bottom—so it is possible. All in all, it’s a good hike, but you’ll need to bring plenty of water due to the heat. It’s also somewhat challenging, so bringing a light snack might be a good idea—I managed with just water in the end. The total distance is about 10 km (round trip). After the hike, I ended up at a small taverna in a village called Η Πλατειά Στράτα (“The Broad Street” or “The Wide Road”). I definitely recommend eating here—it felt very authentic and cozy, and the prices were very reasonable.

This is a really nice place with lots of cool spots. We visited in mid-September, and it was quite dry. Please bring good boots. I saw some people wearing sandals, which poses a risk of foot injuries in my opinion. To fully appreciate this place, it's best to arrive early when it's less crowded at the waterfall.

We had such a lovely and fun day at Watercity! The waterslides were super entertaining and offered just the right mix of excitement and variety. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing time or a bit of adrenaline from the slides, Watercity has something for everyone. Definitely recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

ANAZING! honestly, no other words to describe this place! The rides, the food, the atmosphere & not to mention the views you get on the way there & what you can see in the restaurant area. Greeted by photographers when you arrive, they take a fair few pictures while your at the park (be mindful it can be VERY expensive to purchase these pictures.) But heavily recommend visiting this water park.

Lovely visit, not loads of rides but for someone who likes to do a few and chill on lazy river of jump of the diving board I really enjoyed it. The stage where lovely and the food not big portions but when your in and out of the pool you don’t want a big meal. Went with 20,18 year olds and they had good fun too.

There were some features of the room that were a little dated, CD player and safe, and could have done with a few USB charging ports, but these details are relatively minor for a leisure traveller. The gym is clearly an old dance studio with decent equipment and lovely staff (fine for a down week) but could do with updating and new equipment that is more appropriate (e.g. pull up bars and a bench) and more of a multi gym. The setting is beautiful along the beach with different pools and stretches of beach to explore. They assign you your loungers to prevent travellers from stealing them first thing in the morning. The food was of an extremely high standard throughout, and the town is only a short walk away (15 mins) if one wants local cuisine. The breakfast is varied and consistently good. Do get up earlier for tables with a perfect view in the shade (they are in demand!). The staff make your stay pretty effortless, and is customary for a five star hotel but it was seamless, friendly and gentle throughout. We want to pay a special thanks to Alexandra the gym instructor who ran excellent classes. There are minor details that could do with refinement to make it ideal for a gym bunny determined to do work on holiday, but if you just want to relax and enjoy the view and food and have a great view at a reasonable price you will get great value here. We would recommend to others.

We did not enjoy our stay at Elounda Beach. While the view from the hotel is undeniably beautiful, the hotel itself is old and in serious need of renovation. Our first bungalow (no. 82) had a cockroach infestation. The hotel’s initial reaction was simply to send someone to spray the room. Only after we insisted did they move us to another bungalow (no. 80), which, while free of cockroaches, had a serious ant problem in the bathroom and was equally decrepit. For a supposed 5-star property, the facilities and service were far below expectations. There was no compensation offered—just a brief apology—and staff didn’t seem surprised by the cockroach issue, which was worrying. On top of that, the facilities are just old everywhere. The double bed consists in 2 single beds next to each other. The AC unit must be from the 1980s and circulated mold everywhere in the room. Breakfast was just OK with slow service. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this hotel. It does not live up to the standards one would expect from a luxury property, especially given the price they billed.

My stay at Elounda Beach Hotel & Villas was truly unforgettable. I spent two months here, and what made this experience so special were the incredible people who became like family to me - Nikolina, Erini, Marios, Valeria, kirilos and dimitris. I have never met people more genuine, kind, and hardworking. Their warmth, professionalism, and constant smiles made every single day better. They went above and beyond in every way possible, and I can honestly say that my stay was ten times better because of them. Elounda Beach is a beautiful place, but it's the people who make it truly exceptional. I'm beyond grateful for the memories and the friendships I've made here. Thank you for making me feel at home from day one - I can't wait to come back. - Saint Tala

2 Stars – Disappointing Stay Despite Great Staff and Views Hard to believe this is part of the Leading Hotels of the World. While the staff was genuinely pleasant and professional, the experience fell far short of expectations. I moved here from their sister property, the Elounda Bay Palace, due to a foul odor in the room there. At first, my room in the spa building seemed like an improvement—dated but with some charm and a beautiful view. The pool and facilities were better than at the other hotel, and again, the staff was kind and welcoming. Unfortunately, the same odor issue persisted. After a windy day, the entire spa building—including the spa itself—filled with a strong sewer smell. It was awful at night, and the stench made it nearly impossible to sleep. I complained three times, but nothing was done during my stay. Days after I left, the manager emailed to say they couldn’t detect any smell, which only added to the frustration. To make matters worse, the bathroom’s steam shower wouldn’t stay closed due to a broken seal. I asked for it to be repaired, and the maintenance team not only failed to fix it but somehow made it worse, leaving dirty footprints all over the bathroom floor. Between the sewer odors, the subpar breakfast, and careless maintenance, it’s hard to believe this property carries the "Leading Hotels of the World" label. The friendly staff and nice view just weren’t enough to save the experience.

Unique hotel. The grounds are breath taking and beautifully designed. Staff are warm and caring. Watersports team are the best in the world. Some reviews complain about unrefurbished rooms. This is a taste issue. The "older" rooms are built in incredible quality marble and wood. Not very sustainable to destroy that just to change with the times. This is a legendary resort. As a testament to this, many guests have been coming for decades and many staff members too.

We stayed in a villa and from the moment we arrived we felt at home. Though an older establishment love and attention has been put into the villas and they are clean and comfortable. Our entire family agreed we were treated so well by the incredible staff. From being checking in on during our stay, to the general manager coming to introduce himself at dinner, to the cleaning and in room dining staff taking the time to talk with our family we felt so appreciated! The people of this hotel take pride in their jobs and in their island and are so happy to have you there. The private patio pool was an excellent way to cool down on a hot afternoon and we were just steps from our private beach. The grounds are beautiful and perfect for evening strolls. We will most definitely be back!

We had the most incredible experience at this beach resort in Crete. The property is breathtaking—lush, beautifully maintained grounds and pristine waters that invite you to unwind and explore. But what truly stood out was the exceptional hospitality. Every staff member was warm and welcoming, making us feel instantly at home. Special shoutouts to Maria at concierge, who went above and beyond to make our stay smooth and memorable, and Mariana in the restaurant, whose kindness and attention to detail made every meal a joy. Highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a luxurious, heartwarming escape. Five stars all the way!

Fabulous hotel. Our room was amazing with a view to the sea spacious well huge actually and spotless. The staff were brilliant couldnt do enough for you. The private beach was sandy and the sea crystal clear. The beach boys allocated you a sun bed bed and it was yours for the week no matter when you wanted to sunbathe. The grounds are beautifully kept in fact we had not one thing negative to say. Its a 20 minute walk into Elounda and if you take the turning yo the right past Thea resturant it takes you along the sea front past all the resturants.

Sitia Beach is a charming and clean town located in the Eastern part of Crete, known for its friendly locals and beautiful tourist spots. The beach offers a wide range of activities for kids, including playing in the sand and swimming. Sitia itself is a picturesque port town with cobblestone streets, scenic views of the harbor, and beautiful churches.
Nice beach, but quite narrow

Sitia supermarkets A Lidl supermarket with local Greek goods is close at 1 minute by car. There are a few more supermarkets and a handfull of 7-11 in Sitia. A large Supermarket X is easy to find, from Lidl cross the street , there is a street at 90 degrees from Lidl, follow that street until you reach the largest supermarket X. This X is where all locals go to, great Greek local dishes. The supermarket in the center of Sitia close to the roundabout has local goods and a butcher with delicious meat. Try their Kofta! Across the street of this supermarket near the round about is a small 7-11 in a small street that sells Royal Toro BBQ charcoal. Sitia centrum On a corner close to the boulevard of Sitia is a design olive wine shop with great products. Walking away from the Sitia city on the boulevard is Kipseli design shop with lots of presents for home. Their donkey milk products are great! Cleopatra used to bad in Donkeymilk, so try it. Try their Manotira / Iron Wort tea, anti biotic properties and good for your health, the ancient Greek used it to heal their soldiers. The favorite product by Hippocrates. A range of local products such as the world renowned Sitia olive oil, good selection of honey (thyme, pine etc). Cotton greek bathrobes etc. Sitia is an olive oil producing area since ancient times and still world renowned for the olive oil, 0,1 or 0,2 (low acid) is the best you can get. The world championship of olive oil is still held in Sitia. Sitia has some nice shops but is far from a large shopping area, still the smaller parallel streets next to the harbor have some nice shops.

Sitia Beach is a lovely surprise for anyone who visits. It’s very clean, well-organized, and spacious — even during peak hours. The sand is soft and comfortable, and the sea is calm and crystal clear, perfect for swimming and relaxing. There are sunbeds and umbrellas available, but you can also lay your own towel. The location is ideal — there is a nice beach bar there called Kalamia that serves fantastic cocktails that are reasonable priced. We paid for 2 sunbeds, an umbrella and 2 freshly made cocktails, under 20 EUR. Sitia Beach is just a few minutes’ walk from the center of Sitia, so you’re never far from cafes, taverns, or shops. The overall vibe is relaxed, family-friendly, and authentically Cretan — no large crowds, no stress, just pure seaside pleasure. It’s the perfect spot for peaceful, quality time by the sea. Its a good choice when there is a medium North / North West wind, for the water remain relatively calm, as opposed to other nearby beaches that get kinda wavy. Sitia is one of those places that doesn’t beg for your attention — but once you’re there, you never want to leave. It’s authentic, welcoming, and blissfully free from the overwhelming crowds of more touristy spots. I visited with my partner and we stayed at the Sol suite of Avra Maris, just a short walk from both the beach and the seafront promenade. Everything was within reach — an organized beach, cozy raki spots, seaside taverns with incredible food, and warm, friendly service. The atmosphere in Sitia is simply magical. At night, walking along the beach, you hear the waves blending with the soft chatter of locals and the irresistible smell of grilled octopus and raki in the air. You don’t need much — Sitia gives you everything you need to truly unwind and recharge. If you’re looking for a destination where you can slow down, feel like yourself again, and rediscover what makes holidays meaningful, Sitia delivers — effortlessly, without trying too hard. And once you've been there, you'll find yourself wanting to return.

Drove 90min to get here on a recommendation. It's a town beach. With all the traffic and commotion expected. Parking was "interesting". The beach is nice though, soft sand and a gentle slope. Worth the drive, maybe, would recommend, probably for the beach and amenities. Quiet. No

Malia Palace Archaeological Site, located 3km east of Malia, is the remains of a Minoan palace dating back to around 1650 BCE. The site was initially built in 1900 BC and later reconstructed after an earthquake in 1700 BC, only to be destroyed again by another quake around 1450 BC.
Very interesting. Unfortunately some areas were closed due to maintenance. Plus we had to rush a little bit as we arrived shortly before they close. However the staff was very friendly and reopened so we could have a quick tour.
Tobias H — Google review
I will make the same comment as to other archeological sites in Crete: for the entry fee, the site should be more visitor-centered, including additional notes, maps or labels tourists could read and enjoy along the way. Malia is quite a remarkable site to visit, very well preserved and with a lot of surface to cover. However, the entry shows a very well organized center that quickly becomed a bit disorganized: the ruin areas are limited by ropes which are difficult to find and a lot of the site is actually closed for cover renovations (or that's what it looked like). Anyhow, one of the key Minoan sites to visit in Crete.
João D — Google review
The Minoan Palace of Malia should be on your agenda when visiting Crete. Along with Knossos and Phaistos, it was one of the three largest Minoan palaces. It was connected by road with Knossos. It was a considerable sea port. Many important archaeological artifacts were discovered here. The most famous is the “bee earrings.” Malia has had little reconstruction, which is a huge contrast with Knossos. Suggest doing some research about the site beforehand.
Forrest T — Google review
All most interesting parts are roped off and we were followed around our entire time there. We were the only two visitors on the site and so no idea why we were under close observation. We left early having not seen half the site.
Richard W — Google review
Well worth a visit found it very interesting and more excavations are currently taking place this place is a must if you love history
ROBERT H — Google review
Even though a section is currently closed off for maintenance, this is still a great site to visit. A well laid out information hut with maps and models of the different minoan buildings with lots of information, history and photos to bring the ruins to life. It is a large site with a mixture of covered sections with guided walkways, and open areas where you can roam more freely. There were even a couple of friendly archaeologists working on site today who were happy to take a breather from renovating paving stones to answer some questions. Full amenities: loos, cafe, shop
Brenda H — Google review
Beautiful site, no doubt about that! Unfortunately, the full site isn’t accessible until the 18/10. We weren’t told when buying the tickets and got charged the full price. When we shared our disappointment at the end of the tour, a man explained quite aggressively that there was a board at the entrance and that we could have decided to not buy our tickets. True: there is a note, but you need to be an expert to know what it means and, the site being far away from the city centre, you wouldn’t go back after a 40min walk. All we wanted to say is: it’s ok to pay for the entrance, but not for the full price when 1/3 of the site is closed.
Julie L — Google review
Interesting site well laid out with good informative indoor space with photos nd explanations in 3 languages including English. You can download information on your smartphone about the sire which gives all the info needed to make sense of the site as you walk about, good parking nearby. Cafe was shut so can't comment on it though it looked fine.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Kazarma Fortress, also known as Casa di Arma, is a historic site in Sitia that dates back to the 13th century when it was built by the Venetians as a guard barracks. Despite suffering damage and destruction over the years, including during the Venetian departure in the 1600s, efforts have been made to preserve this medieval structure.
This is a very old fortress, it is abandoned, but it is still used for concerts and as a theater. It is mostly used in the summer, since it's in open space. Any tourist should go see it. It can be seen from anywhere in Sitia, so it's easy to find. Most of the time to enter you need to pay, but sometimes that isn't the case. The concerts are always hold at nighttime or in the evening.
Irini P — Google review
The fortress was actually closed the day I went but the handwritten note on the gate was so perfect I couldn't be mad. It said something to the affect of "the fortress is closed today because the employee has the day off, thank you for your understanding. Have a nice day." I like it.
Jennifer G — Google review
De view is very pretty and worth the climb up the hills. The actual fortress has very little to show. But a very interesting history. We had to google that history, it would be great if there would have been something to read handed out, or attached to different areas in the fortress. If you are in Sitia, do go have a look. That view make it al worth it!
Filip W — Google review
I wanted to visit it on October 27th. the temperature was 28°C but I found the door locked saying that during winter, the place is closed. I would like to have such a winter with this temperature. Most probably the number of visitors is low and the clerk that suppose to be here is already on holiday.
Bogdan V — Google review
The fortress is laying bare (there is nothing inside except a few basic panels narrating the history of the place) but the walls are well preserved and the interior is pretty to look at thanks to some trees and flowers. The view from the keep is also quite beautiful.
Julien B — Google review
The way they preserved the Tower of Kazarma - although it was destroyed twice in its lifetime is really remarkable. Get up there if you are into the middle ages and their architecture. Also if you are into high peeks that you can enjoy the city view from above. I'm sure you will love it in both cases! Enjoy! The lady at the ticket desk is very nice and welcoming. I almost felt like home! 2 euro entrance fee and open until 15:00 hours!

Kolokytha Beach is a secluded gem accessible only by a trail or a short drive from Elounda. The landscape's wilderness adds to the adventure of reaching this tiny but stunning beach with crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. While it's a beautiful paradise, some visitors recommend arriving early to avoid the crowds brought in by excursion boats. Despite its small size, the beach offers an unforgettable experience with its clear, salty water and absence of sunbeds.
A tiny beach. It's very beautiful, the clearest water I've ever seen. By car, parking is approx. for 10 minutes. Hiking shoes are recommended, but it is also possible to approach in slippers.

Very ordinary and small beach with greyish sand and no services AT ALL + quite unpleasant and very narrow road for getting there by car + 15 minutes walking to the beach via a road full of stones. If you have a possibility better go to Voulisma beach !!
Ksenia M — Google review
Beautiful beach until the boats pull in and the place gets invaded with people. Apart from that everything else was amazing 🤩 Hence the reason I only gave 3 stars ⭐
Lord S — Google review
Not worth the effort of getting there. Goat path for older people might be a problem, especially when going back. Narrow road, two cars can pass each other at a few spots, at high season horrific. No place to sit at te beach, only next to stoney wall. Often waves gets you vet. When boats arrive water is filled with people. Yeah, water is incredibly blue, so if you don’t mind previously listed, come and take few photos
Aleksandra T — Google review
Amazing place for snorkeling, one of the best in crete. The road was a nightmare we were not prepared for. We started ascending a dirt road, super steep with room for one car only. Still, cars were coming from both ways. On the right side there was no fence and you were right on the edge... Super stressing...would not recommend for unexperienced drivers ( we thought we are experienced until this moment). Impossible to turn or go back so we had to go all the way up. The beach was super crowded and boats were coming continuously playing loud music...still great snorkeling experience 🐟

Lychnostatis Open Air Museum is a family-operated museum located on the eastern edge of Hersonissos, Crete. It offers a glimpse into traditional Cretan village life with authentic dwellings and workshops, including a windmill, farmer's house, weaving workshops, ceramics demonstrations, orchards, herb gardens, and a theater for music and dance performances. Founded by Dr.
This museum is amazing. So interesting to learn about Cretan culture, heritage and old way of life. Lucky to have a tour with the founder's granddaughter who was informative and interesting. We went on a Wednesday so we experienced the grape feast and the fabulous dancing and food and drinks. All of the staff were great and the dancers were awesome. We would recommend this to all visitors to Crete and would return again.

Lovely small museum with small buildings and plants showing Cretan life. We went without a audio guide or tour, so used the map to identify buildings and occasionally a translation app to understand writing inside buildings. There are really no signs around so this wasn't the best plan but still spent about 45-50 minutes, including the eight minute introduction video. It wasn't very busy when there (July Sunday around 10:30) though other visitors were scattered about. Toilets and small cafe available - cafe seemed to have a few drink options, maybe a few mains snacks, and seats. Parking in a dirt shoulder/layby just outside the entrance was fine, held around a dozen cars and a few spots were free when we arrived. Note: photos generally in map order
Becky T — Google review
We found this place beautiful, quiet and charming. It backs onto its own (paying) beach which can be entered from the museum - or vice versa. The little cafe in the museum serves both. The museum is one of village methods and life. Most of the stone is old, from ruined local buildings, rebuilt as representative of the usage. A child will like peeking at odd things, by the way - but not for too long!

Beautiful site, quite large, free to wander around, gates open out onto a beach and the sea. Drinks available, (licensed for spirits too) and small gift shop within cafe. Staff are lovely and friendly, honestly well worth a visit. Inexpensive too.

A very interesting museum. It also has a beautiful beach, great for snorkeling, very relaxing spot, not very crowded, with decent space between sunbeds, 7 euros a set (2 sunbeds+umbrela). They also have a restaurant and very nice staff. Ps: if you are a coffee lover get the frappe with ice-cream,it's to die for and the food is good (with decent prices; a greek salat is less than 7 euros). I will come back to this location for sure.

Water Parks
Star Beach Village & Water Park is a laid-back resort located in Chersonissos, offering easy access to the beach and the town. The property features a spacious pool complex with water slides and modern design. It's a great choice for families with young children as it offers unlimited entry to the neighboring Star Beach water park, which includes a pirate ship water playground and various slides and fountains.
The hotel itself is fine, the rooms is good and gets cleaned each day. I also find the staff to be helpful and kind, and the food is not terrible. Also the aqua park is cool. But as I'm laying here at 21:05, and my hotel room is literally shaking from the sound of their ''entertainment'' which tonight is bingo night, they are screaming numbers and repeating them in German & French. Before that it was mini disco, which blasts baby shark at you, with full force. Which I am all for, but right next to your hotel room? I booked the stay with 3 small kids, all of whom are not able to sleep (and neither are we) due to placing us directly next to their nightly entertainment area. Which also seems to be where all the other ''family'' rooms are located. I get the entertainment part but I really don't get that the resort is pretty big, but they put us / families right next to this incredibly loud show, that runs each evening until past 22? As a family with small children, we get very little rest as it is, but even less at this resort. I dream myself back home to a quiet normal night, where the only loud noise is my kids screaming and crying, but in all honesty its more pleasurable than this. EDIT: After asking to change rooms, they gladly helped and we switched rooms, which we are super happy for. They also mentioned that nobody else in the same area complains about the noise, so it's not something they are aware off. I've changed my review from 2 stars to 5 as we are overall happy with the place.

Not a Relaxing Stay – Needs Serious Improvement We stayed at the hotel with our extended family – adults and kids – during the summer. From the moment we arrived, the service was lacking. No welcome, no guidance to rooms, and the lobby was extremely hot with no drinks offered. Rooms were spacious but had weak air conditioning and ant problems in several of them. Beds were very basic and uncomfortable. Despite being told we’d get bottled water daily, we didn’t receive any unless we asked. The dining room was overcrowded and hot, with no air conditioning. Food was okay – better for kids than adults. The evening shows were unimpressive, and the Greek restaurant had a nice view but isn’t suitable for families with small children. Although the water slides were fun, there's no shade on the way up, making the ground too hot to walk on without shoes. The music around the pool was extremely loud all day, even in the rooms – not ideal for those seeking peace and quiet. Service overall was poor, and I even witnessed a staff member yelling at a guest over a simple food request. Wouldn’t recommend for anyone looking for a calm or high-quality all-inclusive experience.
Eada S — Google review
The food is excellent and the selection is amazing! The area can be a bit windy since it’s up north, but there are plenty of other attractions to enjoy – lots of pools, fun water slides, kids’ corners, playgrounds, and more. The whole resort is quite spacious and access to everything is included in the price, even the sunbeds on the beach. It’s truly a paradise for children. Snacks outside of breakfast, lunch, and dinner are fantastic as well. You can choose from fresh vegetables, fruit salads, or classics like pizza and toasties – even vegetarians will be happy. The alcohol is not cheap quality either; they serve well-known brands like Havana Club and Beefeater. And at the bar, they’ll make you a real coffee, not just one from a machine.

We are On our last day at this hotel. Last 13 days have been great. Rooms are excellent, and cleaned every day. Lots of choice of food and drink. Places to eat all over the complex. Pools are a little cold, but everyone loved the new water slides. The entertainment team Jayden etc are a great laugh well worth getting involved with some of the activities. Overall fantastic holiday.

Great hotel for family vacation. Plenty of offers for children (pools, kids club, playgrounds). Mini Disxo for children on 6 of 7 days. 3 different restaurants (2 with breakfast and lunch) with all inclusive. Also 3 different pool bars included with drinks and some snacks. The Water Park is right next door and has multiple pools for all ages. Some slides for and access to sunbeds in the park and on the beach are also included. The staff is very friendly, especially towards children. The hotel is a great destination for vacation with kids!

! Take your time reading this😁 I just camed back from my holiday with my family and i want to tell you my honest review. To be honest i had the lowest expectations because i knew that on booking the rating wasn't very good.Me and my family usualy go to hotels that are +8.5 rating, but at that time it weren't many hotels available. So when we arrived i saw verry old walls and an old reception and my first thing that i said was:I don't think this is an hotel beacause it was so old and it creeped me out😅,but hear me out after we walked in the mini streets of the hotel i fell in love.Everything is close to eachother😍From the food zone-Beach side-activities-pools-rooms it is amazing. The sea is clear as the water, the views are amazing, and the waves are the best feeling🥰 Okay,THE FOOD WAS ABSOLUTLY THE BEST FOOD FROM ALL HOTELS,guys if u like eating meat, sea food, pasta, pizza, tacos, whatever u want litreally,go HERE!😋 HEAR ME OUT,my parents are very picky when it comes to food,we went to egypt, turkey but nowhere the food was so tasty like hear, the plates where finished😁Don't get me wrong, egypt and turkey have bigger ospitality and a larger amount of food and diversification, but we prefered to be very delicious and it was!I want to thank to all the members of Star Beach Village and we will totally come back!♥️ PS: in front of the hotel there is a whole street of the city center🥰

Aquaworld Aquarium & Reptile Rescue Centre is a unique and intimate attraction located in Hersonissos, Crete. It stands out as one of only three aquariums in Greece and offers a change of pace from the island's historic ruins and breathtaking landscapes. The facility is home to a variety of sea creatures and reptiles, many of which have been rescued and rehabilitated or are unwanted pets.
Small but very interesting place with a lot of interesting animals, including a beautiful sea turtle (a blind rescue) and axolotls :) Several animals were free to wonder around and we could pat them. The staff were pleasant and full of knowledge. Great way to support rescue efforts. :)

We visited the aquarium and rescue center during our trip to Crete. The aquarium is very well organized, with a great variety of marine life, from colorful fish, turtles to reptiles. It's both fun and educational – perfect for families, but also interesting for adults. The rescue center part was especially touching. It’s inspiring to see how much effort goes into rescuing and rehabilitating injured turtles. The staff is passionate and knowledgeable, and they were happy to answer all our questions. It's heartwarming to see these beautiful creatures being cared for so well. Highly recommend visiting – it's a great way to learn, support a good cause, and enjoy the beauty of marine life!

Lovely little place run by people who enjoy their job and are good at their job. Very interactive with being able to touch and hold some of the animals. Is a small place, only took around 30 minutes to look around and interact with animals. Did not cost much to enter 10 euros which we payed for at the door, was no waiting time to enter. Although I understand this is a rescue centre they do have some long term wildlife in the facility that will not be reintroduced into nature I feel the vivariums/ tanks could be bigger and more engaging for the animals. In particular a few lizard tanks looked over crowded and some animals in small tanks. Including a very large fish which only had minimal movement.

Well worth a visit. Got to see the sea turtle and octopus being fed as well as listening to detailed history of all the amazing creatures on show. You can hold various reptiles if you are brave enough. The best thing about this place is the fact it is supporting the local ecology, is not owned by a bif corporate entity and is a labour of love. Any money you spend here directly goes to the looking after of the animals and funds future expansion.

What a wonderful little place! Please visit and keep this place in business, they are worth it. The conservation work they do is great.. the aquarium part is really good, but the best part really, is the reptile section. I will not spoil anything for you as the surprise is much better witnessed in person with no warning (its not scary, don't worry). If I can, I will be back for another visit.
Jay B — Google review
Wow wow and wow, we absolutely loved it here. You can tell as soon as you walk in that they love what they do all the animals are well looked after and there fact you get to get up and close to the reptiles. Definitely worth the visit you will not be disappointed. It's a great place to visit.
Louise — Google review
Very small aquarium/terrarium in a flat and yard. To avoid the place getting too crowded they let visitors in slowly and when previous visitors exit. This means a line forms. We waited over 30 minutes in line for what is essentially a 30 minutes visit. It is a nice little place if you don’t mind most fish and reptiles being held in small aquariums with little to no shelter. There are lots of general info posters about ocean life scattered around but not a lot of specific info on the animals in each aquarium beyond their names. The yard with the free-roaming tortoises and lizards is the highlight of course, but is rather crowded. Looks like the animals are used to nudging their way between the visitors. The staff in the yard are friendly and jovial. If you are here and can find a time without a line in the entrance then the place is worth a visit.

What to say about this amazing place. We first visited back on our first trip to crete possibly 2012! And we come every year since. The place is just great. They take care of the animals. They are so clean and so well looked after. The gent who owns it is just well a gent and his staff are so knowledgeable and friendly. We look forward to it every trip and is the first thing we book, we now bring our child who has also found a love for this amazing place. Thankyou as always

Nestled in Gouves, near Heraklion, CRETAquarium Thalassokosmos stands as a remarkable testament to marine life, showcasing over 2,000 creatures from more than 200 species native to the Mediterranean. This modern aquarium occupies a former military base and features an impressive array of 61 tanks that bring the underwater world to life.
Excellent aquarium! Wonderful place to visit if you like sea creatures and learning about the local aquatic environment. The place is incredibly well maintained and looked after too which was great to see. It is by no means a short trip, and thank goodness for all the seating! Some of said seats are right in front of the best of the larger tanks, mesmerizing to observe... There is also a restaurant at the aquarium which I fully recommend for authentic Cretan food (the beef giouvetsi was amazing). My wife thoroughly enjoyed her meal too, I do not remember the dish, but it was a vegetarian one. Lastly, I would recommend all three of the virtual reality shows. They are very interactive and hugely enjoyable. Whatever you do, end on "The Abyss", you'll see why. The staff were so accommodating and friendly.. Enjoy! 10/10

After reading the reviews, I didn’t want to go but changed my mind the last minute and it was absolutely worth it!!! I’ve been to many aquariums, and it’s one of the nicest and cosiest. Calming music, great light, variety of fish. Spent 1 hour. There are 62 tanks which is a lot!!! 👌😍
Kristina P — Google review
This was the fifth aquarium I've visited, so perhaps my expectations were too high. Unfortunately, the venue was very crowded with many children who were noisy and constantly tapping on the glass, despite clear signs asking for quiet. Staff were only present at the ticket counters, so there was no supervision within the exhibition itself to enforce the rules. The layout of the tour was also disappointing. The main attraction, the largest tank, is located right at the beginning. In my experience, you expect a spectacular finale, but here the climax comes far too soon. The digital information panels were another downside. The touch screens often lagged, and with only one screen serving several tanks, it was very impractical in the crowds. The gift shop was also unremarkable and felt just like a typical Cretan souvenir stall. However, there were some positives. The animals themselves are beautiful, and photos don't do them justice. I also learned a couple of interesting facts, for instance about the turtle nesting grounds on Crete, and that ammonite fossils were apparently used for discus throwing in the ancient Olympics. I was debating between giving 3 or 4 stars. However, after considering all the shortcomings and the €12 adult ticket price, I feel that 3 stars is the more appropriate rating.

We went with 2 small kids- the 2y didn’t find any point there but the 5y enjoyed it. I personally enjoyed looking at the fish types and felt most are very different and interesting to look at. The place needs a little maintenance- feel a bit old It’s not that big and didn’t spend a lot of time inside. We were staying at a hotel near by, not sure it worth a long ride.

The aquarium is really nice, well maintained and there is a large variety of fish and sea animals 😍 First time I see sharks and tiny starfish 🥹 I also appreciated the section about biodiversity and ocean pollution. It is informative for kids and can be a good opportunity for a pollution awareness discussion with them. Good to know: -Opening hour is @10AM, make sure you buy your ticket online so you can avoid waiting in line. Otherwise, arrive really early as there can be a lot of families and tours scheduled for visits. We bought the tickets on the spot but had to wait around 20 mins in line to get them. -There is a large parking space outside the aquarium but places can go quickly if you arrive later than noon. -There is a large beach coast right in front of the aquarium so you can have a walk or a swim after your visit. -There are clean toilets inside and a space where you can have snacks and hot/cold drinks. Happy visit! 💫🤗

Spectacular, just check out the pictures. We decided to spend the time before our flight here and it was a great decision. So many animals to see, for a great price. In total we spent about 90 minutes here and another half hour outside at the terrace under the trees.

We liked it! It's quite big. You can buy tickets online before, and get a timeslot to enter. Recommended to get online tickets and go when it's not so busy.

The Jolly Roger is a lively bar located right on the seafront in Sissi. It offers a variety of themed nights including pub quizzes and pirate nights, as well as live music for entertainment. The staff are known for being friendly and accommodating, and the drinks are reasonably priced. The bar itself is designed with a pirate ship theme, creating a fun and unique atmosphere.
Love the pirate ship set up and decor, great fun! Didn't eat here so can't comment but the staff were so friendly and welcoming. Live music act was great, he had the party going for sure. I'll definitely be back here

Lovely English run pub. We went on a Thursday were there was a gentleman playing the guitar. The drinks were a reasonable price. The only downside is that it was quiet far away from anything else, such as parking.

We love this place! From here you can watch the sun set over the sea. The ambience is of course a matter of taste, but I love the Caribbean/pirate style. The service is so good and very nice, the frequent live music is brilliant and the cocktails are simply divine! If you're near Sissi, a visit is a must!

Beautiful bar on three levels with view to the beach. Nice staff and great quality of drinks and beers. We are definitely coming back another day to listen the live rock music :) The People here have a good sense of humor as well - we like that!

This is an off the beaten track venue. Right on the rocky beach, but 500 metres from all the other bars. Great cocktails and live entertainment EVERY night. Well worth a visit 😎

Amazing bar in a great location with lots of character. The staff are all really nice and the local band, who play there most nights, are absolutely brilliant. Well worth a few visits if you're in the area.

Probably the cheapest drinks in Sisi. Great for the football and rugby. Very welcoming and the live music was top class. Drinks only bar with no food.

Great place, right on the sea front in sissi, owners are great and can't do enough for you, Guinness is freezing cold, good G&T too, Husband loved that he could watch the rugby here first day we arrived. There's a reason it's got such good reviews.

The Toplou Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Panagia Akrotiriani, is a historic 14th-century Greek Orthodox monastery located in the northeastern region of Crete. This charming stone monastery features a compact layout with potted plants and houses a museum showcasing Byzantine art and ancient icons dating back to the 15th century. The monastery also boasts a winery and olive oil production facility, offering visitors an opportunity to explore its cultural and culinary heritage.
What a great place this is, full of history, beautiful scenery and wine tasting; what more could you want. We started with the wine tasting which was great and helped by very knowledgable and friendly staff and a lovely setting (we ended up buying two cases of wine). We then toured the monastery which is beautiful, with a sometimes tragic history; the museum attached to the monastery is small but very interesting. I can’t recommend Toplou Monastry enough; we will most certainly be back.

The monastery is a peaceful and historic place to visit. It was founded back in the late 14th century and played an important role during pirate attacks and Ottoman times. It has an impressive fortified look, with a beautiful Renaissance-style bell tower and some stunning frescoes inside. You can also check out the museum and buy their great organic wines made from local grapes.

We visited Toplou Monastery and it was such a peaceful and inspiring experience. The place is full of history, beautiful architecture, and a sense of calm that makes you slow down and take it all in. We were lucky to join a school trip of local children, and shared the guided tour with them — it made the visit even more special and authentic! 💛 A truly charming spot, definitely worth a visit if you’re exploring eastern Crete.
Georgia B — Google review
I begin my day with a visit to the Toplou Monastery, built in 1452 — a place of peace and remembrance. As I arrive, the dazzling white façade stands out beautifully against the deep blue of the sky, inviting exploration. Inside, the church, adorned with ancient frescoes, and the museum, rich in icons and religious artifacts, bear witness to the site’s profound spiritual heritage. I’m fortunate to attend the Sunday service. The monastery, standing in isolation amid the plains, gathers only six worshippers before four clergy: the higoumen, the gerondas, the deacon, and a tenor. The atmosphere is imbued with deep serenity. Light filters softly through a small window, less than fifty square centimeters wide, illuminating the colorful frescoes and golden ornaments. The air is heavy with incense — intense yet mesmerizing. An hour suspended in time, a true privilege. After the service, we are invited to share Greek coffee and a few biscuits in a small room. The monks’ welcome is marked by a simple, sincere generosity — a moment of pure happiness.

Nice museum collection including a showcase of ammunition from 19th (Greek Independence war) and 20th (WWII) century. Operates a small souvenir shop selling local made wine and others. Easy parking opposite the road on gravel opening.

A wonderful little monastery in the Sitia region. The entrance fee was 4€. The momentary has a wonderful little courtyard with a little classic little Greek windmill, cafe and a museum in which important historic relics of the orthodox Greek history (related to the monastery).
