A series of cataracts in a deep mountain ravine, accessible by car & usually frozen in winter.
The waterfall is amazing. The rocks are all around. The way to here is beautifull with the Elbrus mountain view. There are a parking, restaurants and craft market right next to the waterfall. Would be better without "civilization".

Skver Voinskoy Slavy 1941-1945 G.g.

Park
Nature & Parks
Skver Voinskoy Slavy 1941-1945 G.g. is a beautifully maintained square that offers a serene escape in the heart of the city. While it boasts lovely landscaping and benches for relaxation, some visitors feel that the children's amusement park detracts from its charm, as it features outdated attractions reminiscent of past eras. However, this vibrant space also hosts various cultural events such as concerts and theatrical performances, showcasing local talent alongside visiting artists.

(Translated by Google) The square itself has been put in order. There are not enough benches along the extreme Alley, along Pacheva Street. The whole impression is spoiled by the children's amusement park, there are 5-6 assorted cabins, like at a construction site, but there is minimal entertainment for children, even from the times of the USSR (it would be better if they installed a standard children's playground).

(Translated by Google) As part of a tour of mountainous Ossetia in September 2025, I visited the Alan Holy Dormition Monastery, located in the village of Khidikus in the Kurtatin Gorge. Interestingly, it is the highest monastery in Russia, at 1,278 meters above sea level. The monastery was founded in 2000 and built in the Byzantine architectural tradition. The monastery complex includes two ancient watchtowers belonging to the Gusov family, who owned this site in the Middle Ages. Today, the towers serve as the monastery's bell tower. The monastery belongs to the Alan Diocese, which is not part of the Russian Orthodox Church. Established in 2005, it falls under the jurisdiction of the Church of the True Orthodox Christians of Greece. The monastery is inaccessible to people with disabilities—the steps leading up are probably 50 cm high. Meanwhile, the monastery is beautiful, I recommend a visit to anyone seeking inspiration and harmony in the heart of the Caucasus!

(Translated by Google) The Alan Holy Dormition Monastery is one of the most important spiritual shrines not only in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania but also in the entire North Caucasus. Situated in a picturesque mountain gorge, the monastery is a symbol of the revival of Orthodoxy in Alania after decades of the atheistic Soviet period. The monastery's history is relatively young, but rich. It dates back to the late 20th century. Idea and Foundation: The initiative to establish the first male monastic monastery in modern-day North Ossetia belonged to Bishop (now Metropolitan) Gideon (Dokukin) of Stavropol and Vladikavkaz. The blessing for construction was received in 2000. Foundation Site: The monastery was founded on land adjacent to an ancient Christian monument—the Zru Sanctuary (Zru Temple), dating back to the 10th-12th centuries. This location was not chosen by chance: it symbolizes the deep historical roots of Christianity in Alania, which adopted Christianity in the 10th century, before Kievan Rus'. · Construction and Growth: Construction proceeded rapidly. The foundation of the monastery's main church, the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was laid in 2002. By 2005, the main work was completed, and the monastery began its full life. Essentially, the monastery was built from scratch in record time, made possible by the efforts of the brethren, benefactors, and the republic's authorities. Architectural Ensemble The monastery complex blends harmoniously into the rugged mountain landscape and is built in the traditions of ancient Alanian temple architecture, giving it a unique and recognizable appearance. · Cathedral of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary: The center of the monastery's spiritual life. This majestic white-stone church is crowned with not one, but five helmet-shaped domes, reminiscent of the Alans' military past. Inside, there is a carved wooden iconostasis, and the walls are decorated with frescoes depicting saints, including those especially revered in Ossetia. · Gate Church: Located above the main entrance to the monastery. · Bell Tower: A freestanding, tall bell tower completes the architectural ensemble. · Zrus Sanctuary: Although the 10th-century church itself is located a little further away, it is an integral part of the monastery. It is a place of pilgrimage and a reminder of the ancient Christian history of Alania.

At 16,581 feet above sea level, Mt Kazbek is an impressive extinct volcano offering hiking and climbing routes. Also known as Mount Kazbegi or Mkinvartsveri in Georgian, it's nicknamed The Bride due to its often fog-shrouded peak. Located on the border of Georgia's Kazbegi District, reaching the mountain takes a two to three-hour drive followed by a walk due to slippery ice.

Detailed Kazbek 2024 summit expedition trip report. Our expedition, organized by Elamus Pluss, consisted of 12 members: two guides, ten well-prepared climbers. Each participant had undergone extensive six-month training and/or had prior high-altitude experience. We carried all our gear, including food, tents, and equipment (backpacks15-25 kg, no horses used). Day 1 (July 4): Riga (11pm) -> Tbilisi (4:45am) flight. Day 2 (July 5): After landing, picked up by a 20-seater bus at 5:00 am, heading straight to Stepantsminda. Arrived by 9:00 am. The morning was spent preparing for the climb—buying gas, snacks, renting additional equipment. Checked into the Paramount Hotel at 1:00 pm. The hotel, which has its own Delica (6-seater bus), arranged transport to the Trinity Church for 60 lari. After some rest, we held a group meeting in the evening to discuss the expedition plan and distribute group equipment. Dinner at Cozy Corner, night ended with packing and early sleep. Day 3 (July 6): 8:00 am breakfast, we took Delicas to the Trinity Church and began our hike at 9:57 am. The trail to the 3000m camp took approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes, following a work-rest rhythm of 50 minutes of walking + 10 min of rest, with some additional breaks as needed. We arrived just in time to set up our tents before the rain started. The 3000m camp now has two huts: Altihut and the newer Alpine Hut Deka, which is closer to the tent area. Deka offers a cozy sitting area with a fireplace, and amenities like beer (15 lari) and overnight stays (150 lari). Tent campers can use the facilities if they make purchases at the bar. Evening spent packing for the next day and went to bed early. Day 4 (July 7): Woke up at 6:45 am and began our hike to the Bethlem camp (3653m) at 8:09 am, arriving at 1:30 pm after a 5-hour, 20-minute trek covering 4.8 km and 700 meters of altitude gain. That evening, we decided to reduce our stay at Meteo camp from four nights to three due to a favorable earlier weather window. Group’s health was strong. Day 5 (July 8): The day was dedicated to glacier and self-arrest training on the Meteo camp slope from 10:00 to 11:30 am. In the evening, check-in meeting at 7:00 pm to monitor group health, measure SpO2 levels, and assess altitude sickness symptoms. Also discussed summit day plan, ensuring everyone was well-prepared. Day 6 (July 9): Summit day began at midnight. We gathered at the Meteo well, and started the ascent at 1:08 am. Assistant was the pointman, maintaining a steady pace with a heart rate target of 140 bpm. One member turned back early due to the fast pace, as per our agreement to make a decision before reaching the glacier. Here’s a breakdown of our times and distances: • To White Cross: 35 minutes • To 3000 altitude meters: 1h 15min • To 4000m: 1h 25min • Glacier equipment on at 4250m: 2h 20min • To 4500m: 3h 55min, covering 5.6km • To 4650m: 5h, covering 6.2km • To 4800m: 6h 05min, covering 6.3km • To 4850m (peak plateau, Russian-Georgian border): 6h 30min SUMMIT at 8:40 am after a 7.5-hour climb, with 11/12 members making it to the top. The final section, though steep with a 40-degree incline, was manageable due to 20-30 cm of fresh snow, which made for easy steps. The conditions were safe, no need for extra ropes or belaying. We spent 20 minutes at the summit, enjoying clear skies before descending. Fog and clouds rolled in just as we started down, making the snow mushy. We returned to Meteo camp by 12:45 pm, completing the summit round trip in under 12 hours. Fatigue set in, with two members showing strong symptoms of altitude sickness, but all recovered after resting. Day 7 (July 10): We began our descent at 8:40 am in rainy conditions (muddy terrain) especially for those without walking poles. We crossed the glacier with just crampons. We arrived at the Trinity Church parking lot by 1:00 pm, where our bus was already waiting to take us back.

Mount Kazbegi is the third-highest peak in Georgia. With snow capped mountains, forest ranges and lakes make it the most beautiful part of Georgia. The Georgian Military Highway leading to Kazbegi from Tbilisi is itself is a drive which I will never forget. There are many places on the way where one can stop to enjoy the view and take pictures. But on the narrow road, there can be traffic jam, which we faced both ways. There are several accommodation options available if anyone wants to spend more time.

Gergeti Trinity Church, located in the historical Khevi province of Georgia, is a 14th-century cross-cupola church perched on top of Gergeti Mountain at an impressive height of 2,200 meters above sea level. This iconic monument offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, with the majestic Mt Kazbek as a backdrop.
“A cultural gem with an amazing view.”✨ This is definitely a must see when visiting Kazbegi. We hiked up the mountain, which is easily doable. However, you can also reach the location by car. The most stunning thing about the location is the view. You are high up the mountain and can see the entire valley on various sides. The church itself is also very pretty from the inside.

To visit this place is an experience to be cherished. The views of the mountains and the valley are phenomenal. We drove to the church. The road is sealed so even a sedan can drive on it, no need for a 4 wheel drive. You can also hike to the church. The chapel is small but peaceful. Please dress modestly. Women in pants can borrow a wrap around skirt kept in a basket as you enter the chapel. We visited in October where the hillside was rich with colour. Entry is free

I visited the Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Kazbegi, Georgia in October 2025 during autumn with my family. We started our journey from Gudauri and covered a few local viewpoints along the way. The road trip was incredibly scenic—mountains painted in shades of lemon yellow, brown, red, and green from the autumn leaves. The higher peaks, which are usually snow-covered, looked almost bare with no trees or grass. The monastery sits at an altitude of around 2,500 meters, and the road leading up from Kazbegi is extremely steep and curvy—only experienced drivers should attempt it. After parking, you need to do a short trek to reach the monastery, and the winds at the top are very strong. Once you reach the summit, the view around feels like something straight out of a wallpaper or desktop background. One piece of advice: please wear proper ethnic or modest clothing to respect the local culture. After that, we visited the last monastery near the Georgia–Russia border, which is also beautiful and located right next to the highway. Finally, we returned to Gudauri and took a jeep up the mountains to see and touch the remaining patches of snow at the summit.

One of the most breathtaking views you can see in Georgia. The vibe and peace of this mountain church is truly unmatched. Entry and parking is free. However, its much further away from Kazbegi than the map shows, it was around 20 mins one-way
Fekete M — Google review
Gergeti Trinity Church is easily one of the most memorable places to visit in Georgia. Sitting high above Stepantsminda with Mount Kazbek rising dramatically behind it, the views are simply breathtaking. Whether you hike up the trail or take a 4x4 vehicle, the journey itself feels like part of the experience. The hike is steep in parts, but the scenery along the way makes it completely worth it. The church dates back to the 14th century and has a quiet, spiritual atmosphere. Even with visitors around, it still feels calm and authentic. The stone architecture paired with the wide-open mountain landscape creates a truly iconic sight—one that looks amazing in every season. Perfect for photography, relaxing, or just enjoying the fresh mountain air. Weather can change fast, so it’s good to bring something warm. Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best lighting, and if you're lucky, you’ll see the peak of Kazbek emerge from the clouds. A must-see landmark in Kazbegi and one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the entire country!

We had the pleasure of visiting the stunning Gergeti Trinity Church, nestled at an elevation of 2170m and just a ten-minute drive from Stepantsminda, the nearby town. Opting to drive up the mountain was definitely the right choice for us, given the steep and cold conditions. The views from the top were absolutely spectacular and made the drive completely worth it. We admired those who chose to hike up, kudos to them! It wasn't our cup of tea, but the breathtaking panorama made the trip unforgettable either way. Highly recommend visiting for anyone considering it; whether you hike or drive, the scenery won’t disappoint!
Sal S — Google review
This was an incredible experience from start to finish. We chose to hike the track up to the church, which I would strongly suggest. The walk itself is lovely and not too strenuous, taking us about two and a half hours. The scenery along the way is breathtaking. But the true magic is inside the monastery. The moment you enter, you feel a shift. The air is calm, and there's a profound, ancient feeling all around you. It's one of those special places that quiets your mind and settles your soul. The entire experience was simply awesome, and the feeling inside that monastery will stay with me for a long time.

I travelled here in the end of April and the place was full of snow and looked really stunning with beautifully mesmerizing views of the snow capped mountains all around. The bar and shisha place was more on the expensive side and other snow activities were shut due to reaching of almost the end of snow season. Paragliding was open but the locals told me it's not very safe as the people aren't very professional and reliable, so I avoided that. Besides it's a very beautiful and breathtaking taking spot. Also to mention the road closures were a bit of a problem as I had to wait for an hour just to cover 7kms.
Anjali A — Google review
When we went it was around 4 degrees and foggy and light wind. But because of fog could not see the mountains to the fullest. Best time is when less fog but hard to predict
Anil N — Google review
It was a complete zoo when I visited but even so, the views are spectacular and so it is definitely worth a visit. The murals on the monument paint what to me was a rather romanticised version of Russian Georgian history but for a friendship memorial, i guess that's the point.
Phil M — Google review
The Friendship Monument, celebrating the camaraderie between Soviet Russia and Soviet Georgia, is set against the backdrop of breathtaking natural beauty. During the summer, visitors are treated to lush green mountains, while in winter, the landscape transforms into a stunning snowy wonderland.
Umer S — Google review
I highly recommend it! The view is breathtaking!!! And there also a very nice old man who sells good honey right before the panorama on the side of the road, I suggest you get honey after you finish your visit
Aya S — Google review
Despite the ideology behind this memorial, the views are outstanding and incredibly worth the stop. 360 view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Local shops sell fresh fruits and snacks. Entry is free by the parking fee is cheap and "negotiable".
O M — Google review
This place mesmerizes anyone with its panoramic view of the mountains. You will get a totally different scene in winter and summer seasons. In winter, the nearby mountains are covered with thick snow and its difficult to walk towards the monument. On the other hand, lush greenery during the summer season welcomes you. If you get the chance to visit the monument then do visit it in both summer and winter.

Lots of cute strays doggies here. The views are amazing and open There's a concrete block that's a makeshift toilet with 3 stalls at the lower carpark. 2 GEL to use and is as basic as it gets Spend 5 GEL at the restaurant on a soda and use the toilets there instead Lots of people all around as its one of the better rest stops on the way to and from Stepantsminda or the Russian border

Amazing. Mesmerising and activity filled. Little more rustic than European ski resorts, but excellent. Take care of your own safety
Bhavik U — Google review
We stayed 4 nights in February, the resort was absolutely wonderful. Lots of snow, many lifts, cafe's, restaurants, everything was clean and working. The prices are incomparable with Alps or High Tatras, food was delicious. But the best part was the skiing and snowboarding. So much fresh snow I can only remember from my childhood. The slopes were well prepared and nicely marked, everyone was really nice and helpful. Most locals speak Russian or English and you can pay for everything with card or cash or even US dollars. There is also a wonderful spa with outside hot pool and ice rink. Highly recommended
Radovan D — Google review
Like: - not as crowded as many Western European ones - relaxed vibe - lots of adorable stray dogs Dislike: - get ready to get lost. There are barely any signs or ski lifts are not clearly labeled. It's hard to navigate but you'll eventually get the hang of it with some effort. - there's hardly any crowd control for some of the ski lifts which means chaos - expect some icy patches on the lower runs toward the end of the day

Went to Gudauri Ski Resort solo in Jan 2025 and honestly, it was amazing. Great slopes, epic views, and such a chill vibe. Totally worth it, even more fun than I expected going alone!

Gudauri Ski Resort offers stunning mountain views, well-groomed slopes, and a friendly atmosphere. Perfect for all skill levels, it’s ideal for both casual skiers and thrill-seekers. With cozy lodges and great après-ski options, it’s a fantastic winter getaway in the heart of Georgia’s Caucasus Mountains.
Ahmed — Google review
During my winter visit to the resort, I was captivated by the breathtaking scenery, even though I didn’t get the chance to stay there. Unfortunately, the rope cars (cable cars) were not operational during our visit, which was a slight disappointment. For those interested in activities like snowmobiling, I strongly recommend negotiating prices directly with the operators. Booking through guides can lead to significant markups due to commissions, so you may save a fair amount by handling it yourself. However, safety is paramount. Be cautious while participating in snow and ice activities, as the conditions can sometimes be unpredictable. It’s worth nothing that my experience was limited to visiting the resort rather than staying on the property, so I can’t comment on the accommodation or other on-site services.

Мечеть "Сердце Чечни"

Mosque
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Historic, ornate mosque with Ottoman-style architecture that can hold 10,000 during prayer services.
Beautiful Mosque and absolutely magnificent architecture. One of the biggest mosques in Russia & Europe and one of the most beautiful mosques I've ever been to. One thing that i had never experienced before at a mosque was an armed guard at the entrance throughly checking us and our bags and even more weird was that bags were not allowed to be taken inside despite the checking, and had to be left at the main gate. It was very unusual thing. Beautiful mosque nonetheless.
Mustafa S — Google review
The "Heart of Chechnya" Mosque, also known as Akhmad Kadyrov Mosque, stands as a symbol of both faith and resilience in Grozny, Chechnya. Completed in 2008, it's one of the largest mosques in Russia, capable of accommodating thousands of worshippers. Architecturally stunning, its design incorporates traditional Islamic elements with modern features, such as its gleaming white marble façade and towering minarets. Inside, the mosque boasts intricate calligraphy, ornate chandeliers, and a grand prayer hall adorned with lush carpets. The mosque's significance extends beyond its architectural beauty; it serves as a poignant reminder of Chechnya's tumultuous history and ongoing efforts for peace and reconstruction. Visitors often praise the mosque for its serene atmosphere and welcoming environment, despite its monumental size. It's not just a place of worship but also a cultural landmark, attracting tourists from around the world eager to marvel at its splendor and learn about Chechnya's rich heritage. However, some critics raise concerns about the mosque's association with the controversial political figure Akhmad Kadyrov, whose legacy is divisive among Chechens. Despite differing opinions, the "Heart of Chechnya" Mosque remains an emblem of faith, resilience, and cultural identity for the people of Chechnya and beyond.

Beautiful site to visit while in Grozny, Chechnya. It is called the Heart of Chechnya and is located near the center of the city.

A beautiful complex, inspired by the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. Women are restricted to the right side of the balcony, though.
Max D — Google review
In Grozny, on the former Lenin Square, at the Putin Prospekt, there is a mosque named after Akhmat Kadyrov. The architectural design for the building, built in the classic Ottoman style, is the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) in Istanbul. A beautiful mosque, but it has no connection with the Chechen tradition.

Historic Sites
Ananuri Fortress Complex, located on the Georgian Military Highway by the Zhinvali reservoir, is a historic site with two churches and a watchtower enclosed within massive defensive walls. The complex has witnessed numerous battles and was built by Zurab Aragveli, a ruthless local prince. Despite its dark history, Ananuri rates as one of Georgia's top sites due to its stunning architecture and scenic river views.
Probably the best gem along the Georgian Military Highway. Its a stunning fortress which looks absolutely magical with the water reservoir in the background. I read that you need hours to explore, but we could saw everything in 20-30mins so its feasible for a quick stop. Also parking was 3 lari but entry is free
Fekete M — Google review
Beautiful and would recommend when you are near (but nothing super special or worth driving hours) because you see a castle from the outside and a simple church, it is beautiful with the sea and the mountains but all quite simple. Info: A small market is in front of it with good priced cashmere and wool scarfs and ponchos and a toilette for 1 GEL.
Katy M — Google review
The Ananuri Fortress Complex is one of Georgia’s most spectacular historical sites, offering a perfect blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty. 🏰 Located along the Aragvi River, about 70 km from Tbilisi, the fortress was built in the 16th–17th centuries and served as a stronghold for the Dukes of Aragvi. The complex played a significant role in defending the region against invaders and was the center of political and military power in the area. The architecture of Ananuri is truly impressive. The complex includes two churches, defensive walls, towers, and a bell tower, each adorned with intricate stone carvings and crosses. The Church of the Assumption is particularly stunning, featuring beautiful frescoes and detailed bas-reliefs that showcase Georgia’s rich medieval art and craftsmanship. Walking through the complex, you can feel the grandeur and strategic importance of this historic site. Ananuri is not only historically significant but also surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The fortress sits beside the Zhinvali Water Reservoir, providing stunning reflections of the complex in the turquoise waters. Visitors often share stories of battles and legends associated with the Dukes of Aragvi, adding a fascinating layer of folklore to the experience. The combination of history, architecture, and nature makes it a truly immersive visit. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a photographer, or simply a traveler seeking to experience Georgia’s heritage, the Ananuri Fortress Complex is a must-visit. The well-preserved structures, beautiful carvings, and scenic surroundings make it a highlight of any trip along the Georgian Military Highway.

Beautiful and historic place with stunning views over the lake and mountains. The fortress is well preserved and really worth exploring. You can climb the towers for some amazing photos. There are a few small shops and stalls around, but parking can get a bit crowded. Overall, a lovely stop on the way to Gudauri and definitely worth visiting.

Ananuri Fortress is one of those places that instantly transports you back in time. ⛪🏰 It’s located along the Georgian Military Highway, surrounded by stunning mountain views and overlooking the beautiful Aragvi River — honestly, the view itself is worth the stop! The fortress is well-preserved, with stone towers, ancient walls, and a church that’s rich with carvings and history. You can climb up the towers (a bit steep, but fun!) for an incredible panoramic view. It’s a quick stop on the way to Kazbegi, and many tour guides include it in their itinerary — if yours doesn’t, insist on going. You won’t regret it! A perfect mix of history, architecture, and scenic beauty — definitely a 5/5 from me.

Great place to relax before going up in Gudauri. Lots of activities to do there. Sightseeing, you can try their boat ride, there are also some food trucks below. Good for family stopover. Great ground view of Aragvi waters. We tried some family picture there and there is a playground for the kiddos. Its a complete place and great for weekend for the family as well.
Raymond B — Google review
An amazing historical site with beautiful views of the Aragvi River and surrounding mountains. The fortress is well-preserved and offers a great glimpse into Georgia’s past. It’s free of charge to enter but theres a 3 lari charge for parking you have to pay when you leaving the lot.

Beautiful historic stop on the Georgian Military Highway. The fortress overlooks the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir, offering stunning views and great photo spots. You can walk inside freely—explore the stone towers, churches, and walls that date back centuries. Outside, you’ll find small stalls with snacks and souvenirs. Best to visit in the morning or late afternoon for softer light and fewer crowds. Not a big site, but definitely worth the stop for history and scenery together.

Nestled in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of Georgia, Zhinvali Water Reservoir is a stunning sight to behold. The reservoir, with a surface area of 11.5 square kilometers and a maximum depth of 75 meters, provides drinking water to nearly half of Tbilisi's population. Surrounded by the majestic Caucasus Mountains, this reservoir offers a serene and picturesque setting for visitors.

A must-visit stop along the Georgian Military Road for anyone exploring Tbilisi. Fortress
This sprawling, iconic citadel known for its imposing defensive walls, courtyards & archways.
Amazing place, very very rich in history. This place is over 2000 years old and is a UNESCO Cultural Heritage site. It is very well maintained, the view is spectacular and you can see the entire city of Derbent from the Citadel. A must visit place, absolutely spectacular, highly recommend it!
Mustafa S — Google review
What an amazing and impressive fortress built during Sassanid empire. It stretches from the mountain to the Caspian Sea. Derbent was a strategically located city to the Caucasian route (North-South), as opposed to the Silk Road (West - East). This plateaued city was the only entrance, since other areas were so mountainous. It was initially built against the Huns (Mongolia). The city was ruled under many hands - which makes the city culturally rich and diverse. It is now ruled by the kitten empire(as seen in the photos) and is under the iron paw of emperor fluffy III. Edit: my husband hijacked my phone & wrote cat stuff. The city surely has many cute kittens! So happy 🥰🥰🥰
Sophie Y — Google review
If you are visiting Derbent than this is number one place to visit. Perfect view of the city from the fortress walls where you can definitely make some photos. But actually not really much do to here. Walk around, see the view, make photos and eat ice cream. More or less one and a half hour is enough for it. If you are lucky enough you can see some beautiful brides coming here for wedding photos!

Derbent (Russian: Дербе́нт; Persian: دربند‎; Lezgian: Кьвевар, Цал; Azerbaijani: Dərbənd; Avar: Дербенд), formerly romanized as Derbend,is a city in Dagestan of Russia, located on the Caspian Sea. It is the southernmost city in Russia, and it is the second-most important city of Dagestan. Derbent occupies the narrow gateway between the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus Mountains connecting the Eurasian Steppe to the north and the Iranian Plateau to the south; covering an area of 69.63 square kilometres (26.88 sq mi), with a population of roughly 120 thousand residents.

Caucasus Mountains ski resort with runs for all levels, plus summer ATV tours & gondola rides.
The view up heard are insanely beautiful. There was a slight queue at the ticketing booth which was ok as it moved quick. The food vendors here are pretty rude and unwelcoming especially towards the close of the day. The views from the cable cars here are breathtakingly beautiful and is a very good experience overall. If you are here as a 1 day trip plan, the guide might try and squeeze everyone in together but you can always ask the operator that you would like it to be your group only and they will happily oblige.

We had a wonderful time at Tufandag. The fresh mountain air and pleasant weather made for a perfect day outdoors. The kids absolutely loved it, there was plenty for them to enjoy. The cable car ride, which offered stunning views and is definitely a must do. Highly recommended for a fun and relaxing family outing.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I recently had the pleasure of visiting Tufandag Mountain Resort in June, and it was an absolutely magical experience! The resort, set against the backdrop of the stunning Caucasus Mountains, offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, making it an ideal summer getaway. The weather in June was simply perfect—mild and sunny, which allowed us to fully enjoy the breathtaking scenery. The lush greenery and vibrant wildflowers created a picturesque landscape that was perfect for hiking and exploring. The resort offers a variety of trails, and I loved spending my days trekking through the beautiful surroundings, taking in the fresh mountain air. The highlight of our trip was the cable car ride which offered breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. As we ascended, I was in awe of the lush greenery and vibrant wildflowers that painted the landscape. It was a perfect way to appreciate the natural beauty of the area, and the ride itself was smooth and comfortable. Once we reached the top, the views were absolutely mesmerizing! We spent some time exploring the hiking trails that branched out from the cable car station, and each path led to more stunning vistas. The trails were well-marked and suitable for all skill levels, making it easy to enjoy the great outdoors. Whether you're looking for adventure or simply a peaceful retreat in nature, Tufandag Mountain Resort is the perfect destination. I can't recommend it highly enough! I left feeling rejuvenated and inspired! 🚠⛰️🌼✨

Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape is an archaeological site in Azerbaijan, featuring natural and manmade caves with over 6,000 ancient rock engravings. The area also boasts the world's largest mud volcanoes. The well-preserved petroglyphs depict scenes of hunting, fishing, military campaigns, and everyday life dating back to 8-10 thousand years BC. Visitors can explore the park with a guide to learn about the history behind these carvings and their significance.
Amazing historic place telling the story of famous rock petroglyphs and mud volcanoes. One of oldest settlements The area has been settled since the 8th millennium BC. It is known for hosting thousands of rock engravings depicting hunting scenes, people, ships, constellations and animals. Its oldest petroglyphs date from the 38th millennium BC. World heritage by Unescu. WOW

This is a fascinating open-air site just outside Baku. The ancient rock carvings scattered across the stones make you feel like you’re walking through history. What’s even more interesting is that this whole area was once under the Caspian Sea — you can still spot coral-like dents and the raw exposed sea bed stretching out in front of you. The landscape itself is striking, with its flat, square-topped hills as a backdrop. Add in the sweeping views of the Caspian, and it’s not just historic but also a beautiful spot for some amazing pictures.

Another UNESCO World heritage site. Exploring Gobustan was a journey into the soul of humanity. Amidst the semi-desert, over 6,000 ancient petroglyphs etched into the rocks tell stories of lives lived thousands of years ago. As I traced the intricate carvings depicting hunters, dancers, and celestial symbols , I was struck by the remarkable talent of these early artists. Without formal education, they captured their world with such precision and emotion. Standing there, surrounded by these timeless expressions, I felt a deep connection to our shared human heritage. A truly humbling experience.

It was ok but felt very touristy and a long journey from Baku with not much to see. It's interesting and amazing historically, and good that they charge to help protect the site. Surrounded by lots of drivers trying to tell you it's not safe and they will hassle you as you drive there, just don't stop and say no. Carry on the smooth tarmac all the way to the parking and don't fall for their lies. The majority doing tickets was very friendly and helpful

Wonderful experience, really gives you a sense of the place and history behind the land , it's still so well preserved that walking through those rocks take you thousands of year back in history. Must experience You need tickets acquired from your museum tour down the road - so definitely keep those handy, don't throw them away

Gobustan National Park was really interesting. The ancient rock carvings and the landscape are unique and worth seeing. The museum is small but informative. Good day trip also with mud volcano and toy have a nice trip its 1 hour drive from baku. Overall a graet day trip.

Its a marvel where you breadline the centuries old rock art, a form of communication and limestone that were used for alerting for danger or other indicators. You can comprehend the caspain sea was once at that level of rocks and now has receded . Hire a guide so you can know about the place .

Gobustan Mud Volcano

Volcano
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Gobustan Mud Volcano is a bit remote, but accessible by car with caution or by hiring a local taxi. Visitors are encouraged to embrace the mud and its eruptions, which can result in unexpected showers. The area's windy conditions make capturing good audio challenging, but the lunar-like landscape provides ample photo opportunities. Whether driving with high ground clearance or relying on local transportation, this unique destination offers an unforgettable experience for adventurous travelers.
Gobustan mud volcano has been a fantastic experience!! I travelled with my family to this place as part of my Baku vacation. This trip was already paid for in the tour including visit to Gobustan rock art museum. I think it costs around 30 AZN ( manat) per person. Our tour driver dropped us at a pick up point. And man o man the scene changes from the city to " Wild wild West ". There are are a lot of 90s era Soviet/ Iranian cars waiting to pick you up!! You feel as if you have been transported to the 90s in a wild western movie. Our driver was thrilled to note that we were Indians and immediately switched on latest Bollywood numbers on the car stereo. He even offered his car for me to drive. I politely refused because the whole terrain was difficult. This guy started driving full throttle like in those action packed movies. It was fun as well as scary. Open empty space. Finally we reached the place, where already some cars were parked, and some other tourist groups were photographying over small mounds!!! Atlast the mud volcanos!! What a peculiar sight!! Unbelievable!! But you can put your hand inside this small crater and the feel the cold mud. Everyone must visit this place to experience this peculiar phenomenon. The transporter even offered a visit to bigger mud volcanos and more adventure half an hour ahead for an extra price of 40 AZN. As I was short of time, I didn't take the bait. For people who don't like old cars, bumpy rides, mud or wild West, please refrain from visiting this place. For the people who love exploring, experiencing, wild rides and new places, this is a gem of a place. And oh no,don't expect a refreshment store beside these mud volcanos. It will take 1-1.5 hour to see this place. It's an adventure!!

Located about 60–70 km southwest of Baku, the Gobustan mud volcanoes are a surreal natural wonder—part of a region hosting nearly half the world’s mud volcanoes . You can get up close to bubbling mud craters where gas erupts cold, grey mud in sculptural bursts . Visitors describe the landscape as “otherworldly” and unlike anything they've ever seen . Most tours pair this geological marvel with visits to Gobustan’s ancient petroglyphs and museum, making it a memorable half-day trip from Baku . Perfect for: Nature lovers, photography enthusiasts, and curious travelers seeking a unique, offbeat experience just outside the city. Just be ware of the driving... they drive like desert rally car drivers and their cars arent too good for all that beating...
Bilal ( — Google review
The small size and infrequent bubbling of a "volcano vent" was below expectations. There are several "volcano" mounds in a small area with many visitors climbing up for photos, which makes it a bit unpleasant. And we were there on a Monday morning. The "special ride" on the bumpy road was unpleasant - I enjoy off-road racing but only with a competent driver! Been there, done that! 😬
Vincent O — Google review
Beautiful nature phenomenon, but be careful not let the locals sting you. Sadly we agreed with a driver for 25 azn but in the end he demanded 75, which is a crazy sum for such a short ride and handle.
Sunny S — Google review
Visited the mud volcanoes in Gobustan following a local taxi driver (recommended by 2 very helpful Policeman, they acted as translators for us). The local taxi guy was in a Lada & he was a real pro off roading. Mud volcanoes were good & worth the visit
Rizwan Q — Google review
Such a unique attraction! Best way to visit it is by going to the entrance of the Gobustan Rock Art, and the local taxis will be there offering a trip to the mid volcano. The road is incrediblely bad close to the volcano, so not recommended if you have a rental car. It should cost 20 minat for the trip (total price for multiple people, not 20 each). Some taxis will try scam you and say it's 50, or 20 per person, so beware!
Gavin H — Google review
We went to this place of the outskirts of central Baku as park of any tour group. I have to say it was my least favorite part of the trip. The ride from the entrance to the actual mud volcanoes was quite dangerous. The drivers if these old Soviet cars think for some reason putting tourist in danger, speeding down rock filled, dusty roads is enjoyable. As a tourist, I couldn't help but hold on and pray that we didn't roll or have an accident, then what. You are in a foreign country imagine that. That being said the volcanoes were quite small on its not worth putting your life in danger while on vacation. It's a hard pass!

Icherisheher, also known as the Old City, is a historic area in Baku that reflects the city's evolution through its diverse architecture. From the 12th-century walls surrounding the UNESCO World Heritage site to Soviet-era buildings and modern skyscrapers like the iconic Flame Towers, it showcases a range of influences. The Azerbaijan National Art Museum and Azerbaijan Carpet Museum display rich art and cultural traditions, including contemporary works.
A historical walk in the old city speaks volumes of its past. An educational fun experience.

Place is superb, deserves 5 star, but the people here are rude, cheaters and emotionless. Your experience will start right from the taxi driver, who will never intend to return the change money. No public washroom, paid washrooms cost double as soon they see foreigners. Overhyped country of rude people, smoking day and night with loud music on car.

Four vending machines were unable to issue the temporary card, only the 2 manat permanent card. No credit card accepted which was a hassle for tourist who spends a brief time in Baku.

I was amazed and astonished by the architecture and structural of this metro station... replica of Louvre Museum in Paris. For 1st timer, Baku Card or BakiKart is worth 5AZN then you can load for 2AZN and you can keep it as a souvenir. Per ride is 0.30AZN... Love the escalator part, very long and narrow which I felt I am falling and take more or less 5 mins. There is an English signages aside from local signages. Btw, taking pictures is prohibited esp in the flatform area.

These iconic glass high rises, ranging from 36 to 39 stories, are designed to resemble flames and can be spotted from various vantage points across the city. The towers' evening light shows create a mesmerizing spectacle, evoking dancing tongues of flame against the night sky.
It’s nice place to visit in evening if you want good view this is my opinion The Flame Towers in Baku truly nice place to visit , no matter where you view them from in the city with nice and modern structure especially at night , we just take a ticket for the ride for going up it’s like 2 manat for one person we as family really like the ride also then they drop us up next to the flame tower you can enjoy there full view of the towers are always like shimmering flames. Flame Towers are great to visit but it is mainly a hotel and restaurant on 19th floor. The central terrace is actually a pool deck and accessible for residents only. Best is a 15 minute walk to the Manzara Restaurant for the magnificent Baku City view. Do this you will not regret it.

Really amazing architecture and cool buildings. We viewed them from the park nearby and watched the colours at night. It's better to see them in the dark when they light up

MY SHAYLA 😍🔥🔥🔥 The Flame Towers are straight-up breathtaking! These giants dominate the Baku skyline, and you can spot them from almost anywhere in the city. The architecture is sleek, bold, and totally iconic. But the real magic happens at night when the towers light up with LED flames that look absolutely unreal. 🔥 Pro tip: Hop on the funicular around 5:30 PM, and by the time you reach the top of Highland Park, the view will leave you speechless. The city, the Caspian, and those fiery towers create pure cinematic perfection. 🌆✨

The Flame Towers in Baku truly make an impression, no matter where you view them from in the city. Their sleek, modern design and glowing presence – especially at night – dominate the skyline and give Baku a unique, futuristic character. Whether you’re walking along the Caspian promenade or exploring the old city, the towers are always there, watching over the capital like shimmering flames. They’ve become a distinctive and iconic part of Baku – a must-see for any visitor. Beautiful, bold, and symbolic, the Flame Towers are more than just architecture; they’re a statement of how tradition and modernity blend in this fascinating city.

Designed by the late Dame Zaha Hadid, this architectural marvel features soaring white curves and a timber-lined concert hall. Despite its controversial political associations, it has garnered international acclaim for its design and won the Design of the Year award in 2014.
One of the most beautiful designs and interesting, varied and so unusual art exhibitions I have been too. It's definitely worth a visit... (The ticket office and entrance is still a bit confusing - maybe temporary?)

The building is one of a kind and can not be missed visiting when you are in Baku. The entry ticket is 15 mannat and I would suggest skip buying the car museum ticket of 10 mannat. Inside its more of a Art and architecture museum which might be loved by artistic tourist but not to attractive for a common tourist. Its a symbolic place in baku and you should not miss it.

The Haider Aliyev Center is a beautiful museum — truly a masterpiece of modern architecture. Inside, it’s full of fascinating art and crafts ranging from historical artifacts to contemporary works. If you’re an art lover, this place is a must-visit. There are separate sections dedicated to different art forms, and in Basement 3, you’ll find a collection of vintage cars that’s absolutely stunning. Today, it offers a variety of recreational activities such as open-air and 5D cinemas, a 197-foot Ferris wheel, museums, restaurants, shopping areas, and more.

Whether you’re out for a relaxing walk or looking for something more active, I highly recommend renting a bike – it’s a fun and scenic way to explore the whole boulevard. And don’t miss out on the ice cream stands along the way – a sweet treat to top off the experience! Overall, it’s a peaceful and refreshing spot that combines nature, leisure, and family-friendly vibes. A must-visit when in Baku!

Baku Boulevard is a beautiful stretch along the Caspian — clean, spacious, and full of life. By day you can explore spots like Little Venice and enjoy the modern architecture, while at night the views and lights are amazing with people relaxing, eating, and music in the air. It’s very well kept (even the subways under the highway are spotless). Just a tip — watch out for a guy underground with a weight machine who can be pushy. On the boulevard itself, there are fun things like live chess matches and even quirky shops, I loved the designer cotton candy stand.

The Sheikh Safi al-Din Ardabili Mausoleum is one of the most important historical and cultural landmarks in Ardabil, Iran, and a masterpiece of Islamic and Sufi architecture. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this sacred complex was built in the early 16th century to honor Sheikh Safi al-Din Ardabili, the spiritual leader of the Safavid Sufi order and ancestor of the Safavid dynasty. The complex is not only a mausoleum but also a spiritual center that includes a mosque, library, school, caravanserai, and a beautiful courtyard with traditional Persian design. Its architectural beauty lies in the exquisite tilework, intricate calligraphy, and geometric patterns that represent the peak of Safavid art. Visitors are often mesmerized by the stunning dome, minarets, and turquoise tiles, which reflect both the religious devotion and artistic excellence of the era. Located in the heart of Ardabil, the shrine attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists each year who come to experience its peaceful atmosphere and historical significance. Walking through the complex feels like stepping back in time, as the walls and decorations tell the story of Iran’s spiritual and dynastic heritage. For travelers exploring northern Iran, the Sheikh Safi al-Din Ardabili Mausoleum is a must-see destination. It is not only a symbol of Ardabil’s cultural identity but also a key highlight of Iranian and Islamic architecture that connects history, spirituality, and art.

I recently visited Sheikh Safi al-Din Ardabili Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the city of Ardabil, Iran. The shrine is the tomb of Sheikh Safi al-Din Ardabili, a Sufi saint who founded the Safavid order of Islam. The shrine complex is a vast and impressive complex, with a number of different buildings, including a mosque, a mausoleum, a library, and a museum. The shrine is beautifully decorated with intricate tilework, calligraphy, and woodwork. The mausoleum is particularly impressive, with a soaring dome and a beautifully carved mihrab. The mosque is also worth visiting, with its delicate stained glass windows and its intricate prayer rugs. The shrine complex is a peaceful and serene place, and it is a great place to learn about the history of Sufism and the Safavid dynasty. I highly recommend visiting Sheikh Safi al-Din Ardabili Shrine if you are ever in Ardabil, Iran. Here are some additional details about my visit: I visited the shrine in the morning, and it was not crowded at all. I was able to wander around the complex at my own pace and take in all the sights and sounds. The staff at the shrine were very friendly and helpful. They were happy to answer my questions about the shrine and the Safavid dynasty. I spent about two hours at the shrine, and I felt like I had enough time to see everything. However, if you are interested in learning more about the history of the shrine and the Safavid dynasty, you could easily spend more time there. Overall, I had a great experience visiting Sheikh Safi al-Din Ardabili Shrine. It is a beautiful and historic place, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more about Sufism or the Safavid dynasty.

This is one of the great places to visit in iran, used first between 224-651 AD and then extended and modified untill 1096 AD. If it rains forget about taking the stairs all the way with ordinary shoes. It is very well built cement stone stairs but took us over an hour to hike, when you are up there at first it looks small. There is a way to walk all the way along the walls and this itself took us around an hour, all in all plan accordingly to enjoy the view and every moment of the way to the castle. In May the opening hours were until 17:00.

An epic adventure to a medieval fortress! ⚔️ Rudkhan Castle is truly a hidden gem that makes you feel like you're in Game of Thrones! This incredible 1,000+ year old fortress, perched on two mountain peaks at 715m elevation, offers one of Iran's most rewarding hiking experiences. **The Journey:** Yes, it's challenging - around 1,620 stone steps through lush Gilan forests, taking 1-2 hours depending on fitness level. But every step is worth it! The trail winds alongside the beautiful Rudkhan River, through dense greenery where bird songs accompany your climb. Local vendors along the path offer refreshments and encouragement. **The Castle:** Simply breathtaking! This massive brick and stone medieval fortress spans 50,000 square meters with 42 intact towers and 1,550 meters of battlements. The architecture cleverly uses natural mountain features, and you can explore the royal quarters, prison, multiple gates, and water reservoirs. The panoramic views from the top are absolutely stunning. **Important Tips:** - Start early morning to avoid crowds and heat - Wear proper hiking shoes - Bring water and snacks - Not recommended for those with serious health issues (knee/joint problems, diabetes, heart conditions) - Best visited in spring/autumn This "Thousand Steps Castle" is an unforgettable blend of history, adventure, and natural beauty. The challenging hike makes reaching the top feel like a true conquest! Perfect for adventure seekers and history lovers. 🏰

The atmosphere was pleasant despite it being summer; it's not recommended for elderly people. There are small markets along the way to the castle.

A unique Castle 🏰 with ancient fortress. A mesmerising landmark in the middle of mountain Jungles. You will enjoy a great hike in a greenery twisty path with a lot of stairs. Also, you can see Gigantic trees 🌲 and hear birdsong. It takes a gentle 90 minute walk from parking to the castle. Be careful some parts are slippery specially in the rain. Never forget your hiking shoes. 🥾 You can eat or buy local food & souvenirs along the way. 🍳 🍪 Spring & Autumn are best seasons for visit. ⚠️ Forests & Mountains are far more beautiful without plastic bags & bottles. Breathtaking views on top of the castle. A feast for the eyes 🤩

Beautiful and eye-catching nature. If you are a nature traveler and enjoy the peace of nature, I definitely recommend this place. The springs that flow from the heart of the mountain are very clear and drinkable. I came to this place for vacation and I had a great time

Roudkhan Castle, located in the northern part of Iran, near the city of Foman in Gilan province, is one of the most impressive and well-preserved castles in the country. The castle is perched on a hilltop amidst lush forests, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Built during the Sassanid era (around the 3rd to 7th centuries), Roudkhan Castle is believed to have been expanded and fortified during the Seljuk period. The castle was primarily used as a military stronghold to defend the region. It has a distinctive architectural style, featuring large stone walls, watchtowers, and a maze of passages. The castle complex consists of several structures, including the main fortress, two large towers, and a series of defensive walls. The steep and challenging hike up to the castle adds to its mystique, as visitors must walk through the dense forest and ascend hundreds of stairs to reach the top. Roudkhan Castle is a popular tourist destination for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers. The combination of historical significance, natural beauty, and stunning panoramic views makes it a unique and fascinating site to visit. It also represents the strength and strategic importance of the region during various periods of Iran’s history.

Soltaniyeh Dome

We passed this place and village in 1975 on our way back home from Nepal. The Dome of Soltaniyeh of the early 14th century was very impressive by that time and only being visited by a few tourists.

The Soltaniyeh Dome, located in Zanjan, Iran, is one of the largest brick domes in the world and a masterpiece of Persian-Islamic architecture. Built in the 14th century, it showcases intricate tile work and innovative structural design. This UNESCO World Heritage site reflects the artistic and engineering brilliance of the Ilkhanid era.

A good sample of architectural design in ancient Iran, needs a better lightings on the top of the dome for the night time, the combination of the blue head and the orange brick color is very nice.

This ancient tower takes you back to the old times, when a king built a city and the highest tower of the ancient world in just 10 years which lasted throughout all invasions and fought all forces of nature... A must see site.

Hello my friend If you are planning to travel to Zanjan, I definitely suggest you to visit Soltanieh Dome This dome is truly one of the wonders of its time and of today. Unfortunately, no matter how much I explain to you here, it does not fill the place of viewing and visiting this beautiful place for you. I hope that the authorities and the people will pay more attention to the importance of the body in these places and do more restoration and more culture building on these issues. Thanks

Amazing UNESCO World Heritage site as the biggest brick dome in the world. You would need about an hour to visit every part of it. Do not miss the museum and balcony that would see unique artistic frescos!

Zip line . A zip line, zip-line, zipline, zip wire, or aerial runway, is a pulley suspended on a cable, usually made of stainless steel, mounted on a slope.
Iam H — Google review
The cost of the cable car is 1,420,000 Rials . The entrance fee for each person is 60,000 Rials. Not too scary. There's not much to experience at the top of the mountain. But the view and the pictures are absolutely worth it!

Alamut Castle

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Ruins of historic mountaintop fortress, reachable by rugged hikes with sweeping summit views.
The nature and plains here are beyond description — truly indescribable. A palace stands atop a towering, uniquely-formed rock rising from the middle of the plains. I’m not sure if it’s true, but they have closed off the entrance to the castle area, apparently because it’s not safe for visitors. In the surrounding nature, there is also a stunning and mysterious canyon shaped like a snake.

Alamut means Eagle's Nest. It is the famous castle from the history of Persia. You may have heard its name in the movie Prince of Persia. It is said that the English word "assassin" came from the word "hassasin", the followers of Hassan i Sabbah, perfect killers in that era. Currently, the place is in ruins and it is being renovated but the work is very slow. It may take a few years to bring it to life. You will have to climb many steps in order to reach the castle. The castle is not worth taking pictures of, but the view of Alamut Valley from the top especially at the time of sunset is breathtaking. The road to this castle is way more beautiful than the place itself, my second favourite after chalus road. Lots of places for couples and families to spend time if they come here by car. There is a parking and a public toilet available near the ticket area, no food so plan your visit accordingly. The price of the ticket for Iranians and Tourists are different. Approximately, 3 dollars for tourists. DO NOT forget to keep water with you while climbing!

This is a castle with almost a millennia of history and belongs to several dynasties and groups. The sight of the valley is quite beautiful and eye pleasing. There's a ticket to be paid and there's almost 400 stairs to climb to reach the castle. But it is worth it.

The cheapest way from Tehran is to take a bus (80000-100000 Toman) to Qazvin, from Qazvin bus terminal go to taxi stop outside (20 min walk max). Ask any taxi driver to go to alamut castle and don't agree to the initial fares they demand. BARGAIN!! There are no fix rates. And, Qazvin is cheaper than Tehran. We paid (200000 Toman each) and it is expensive. It takes 2 hours and 30 mins max to reach there. Ask the taxi driver to drop you at Golestan restaurant which is just below alamut castle. Most of them will try to drop you afar and you will have to hike upwards with your luggage on mountainous terrain. Kinda tiring. Don't let them do that. If you plan to stay a night at the Golestan restaurant, you can either book a suite, room or you can sleep outside on a big table, which is the cheapest (they provide blanket and pillows). There is a restaurant at the top of the castle. You can have tea there but it's pricey. Enjoy!!

Mysterious stories of Alamut Castle in medieval times combined with the beauty of the landscape made for a memorable visit. The fortress was built in around 865 AD, high upon a rock at a tactical viewpoint where eagles might land. The name Alamut is said to mean"eagle's nest" or "eagle's teaching". Alamut was the headquarters of the Nizari Ismaili state. Of the many strongholds, Alamut is the most famous and was thought impregnable to any military attack. There are stories of its heavenly gardens, library, and laboratories where philosophers, scientists, and theologians could debate in intellectual freedom. The stronghold survived many attacks prior to the Mongol invasion in 1256, during which time the library was completely destroyed.

It is an ancient castle built by Hasan Sabbah in 11th century, to defend his religious cult (Ismailieh) from Holagu Khan. Holagu was a Mongolian ruler who conquered much of western Asia. Hassan Sabbah was founder of Ismaili state and his military group are know as Order of Assassins and they were famous for training eagles. The location of Alamut castle is on top of a 2100 meters hill witch makes it very hard to conquer. And it is very beautiful to look at because you'll be able to see effects on the mountains from last ice ages.

The walk and the sights going there are the best parts, the castle is covered with scaffolding but you can still walk a bit through and get glimpse of what is was.
