Rubjerg Knude

Sights & Landmarks
Scenic spot
Lighthouses
Rubjerg Knude is a remarkable lighthouse that was constructed in 1899, but is now closed to visitors due to the impact of shifting sands and cliffside erosion. Situated on the north coast of Denmark, this iconic landmark offers stunning views over the North Sea. The area surrounding Rubjerg Knude also boasts cultural attractions such as the ancient Viking burial ground at Lindholm Hoje and the North Sea Oceanarium.
Yesterday, I visited Rubjerg Knude Fyr, and it was an unforgettable experience. The iconic lighthouse, standing tall amidst the massive sand dunes, looked like something out of a movie. Its isolated beauty against the vast blue sky made for a stunning sight. Climbing up to the top was totally worth it—the panoramic view over the North Sea and the surrounding sandy landscape was absolutely breathtaking. The shifting sands around the lighthouse give the place a surreal, almost otherworldly vibe. It’s fascinating to see how nature has shaped the area over time. Luckily there was no wind, so the walk to the lighthouse was enjoyable and peaceful. If you’re anywhere near North Jutland, this is a must-visit spot. Perfect for nature lovers, photographers, or anyone who just wants to enjoy some quiet time in a unique and scenic location.
Mahadi H — Google review
One of the most iconic and romantic places to watch the sunset on a clear sunny day in northern Denmark! 🇩🇰 You can climb up the lighthouse and walk over the huge dune until you get to the wide cliff… highly recommend!
Alexander B — Google review
Incredible to imagine that they moved the whole lighthouse 70 meters to new place where it rests now. The location and scenery of the lighthouse within the dune is just stunning and a joy for photographers heart. You can get up to the lighthouse for free, but it is about 20 minutes walk from the nearby parking lot. But definitely worth a visit, but be prepared to have sand everywhere.
Milan P — Google review
There is great park up for motorhomes to stay overnight here, which is really appreciated by us. Access from here to the lighthouse is easy and such a lovely walk. Having been here 5 years ago, it was good to see that the lighthouse stands strong against the force of Mother Nature. It was lovely to revisit.
Karen D — Google review
Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse is one of the most magical places on the Danish coast. Standing tall among endless sand dunes and overlooking the rough North Sea, it feels both majestic and fragile at the same time. The wind never stops blowing here, and the sand constantly shifts, reminding you that nothing lasts forever. The lighthouse has survived storms, moving dunes, and even an incredible journey when it was relocated further inland to save it from falling into the sea. When you stand by it, you can feel that it carries not just history, but also the spirit of resilience. The walk to the lighthouse feels almost surreal – like stepping into a desert by the ocean. The view from the cliffs is breathtaking, especially when the sky changes with the weather: dramatic clouds, golden sunsets, or the deep blue horizon.
LétovItálii — Google review
An awe-inspiring place where nature is gracefully reclaiming its space. From the cliffs, the ocean stretches endlessly, offering breathtaking views that feel almost otherworldly. The descent to the shore is not for the faint-hearted—soft sand and muddy slopes make the trek challenging and best left to the experienced. But should you reach the hidden sand beach below, the reward is pure enchantment. The scene feels far removed from Northern Europe, as if you’ve stepped into a secret paradise carved by time and tide.
Dome I — Google review
Amazing place! 🤩 Rubjerg Knude is a must-visit. The towering sand dunes and the lighthouse create a surreal and beautiful landscape. Free entry, but expect a 10–15 minute walk from the parking lot by the road. Great views and a unique spot for photos — absolutely worth the trip!
Thomas M — Google review
Amazing place! We approached from smaller parking place and when arrived to rhe dunes, the nature was a total surprise. Also liked that it was possible to climb the lighthouse. Full of amazing memories.

Nestled just outside Lokken, Family Farm Fun Park is a delightful visitor farm that doubles as an adventure park, perfect for families with young children. This charming destination emphasizes hands-on experiences with friendly animals eager to be petted and fed, making it an ideal spot for a sunny day out. Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere while engaging in various activities like pony rides, tractor tours, and family cycling.
The best place for those who like to interact with farm animals. I love bunnies so I felt so happy when visiting this place. My short visit in Løkken was really unforgettable because of this place.
MaJuRo R — Google review
From the moment we turn onto family farm fun park, we felt like we were in a green oasis. The green fields, big trees and a lake make it a perfect place to enjoy nature. There are many picnic spots where you can sit, eat and relax while the kids run around. What makes this place really special is the chance to be close to the animals and the kids get a small bag of food to feed them. The kids loved going from the soft rabbits to the friendly goats, the ponies, peacocks and even donkeys. The animals are calm and used to people, you can feel the love, care and effort the owners who run the park put into them and the place. There are many playgrounds, pedal cars, a bouncy castle, sports areas (futbol, volleyball, basketball), pony rides and even free tranktor rides. The kids loved and had fun riding the water bikes on the lake. Everything felt relax and you can bring your lunch, enjoy an ice cream from the cafe or just sit and watch the kids run around. If you want a nice and fun day with your family, this farm near lokken is a perfect choice!. We will definetly come back!

I spent a great day at Family Farm fun Park. There was plenty of activities to do like the pedalos and the football golf. The animals are really kind and you can give them food. I would definitely recommand to spend a day there.

Had an amazing experience with the whole family. My 2 year old couldn't get enough. Lots to do in a very cozy placw

It was super fun! Lovely animals and also some fun activities. It’s great for family or animal lovers. The couple who owns Family Fun Park have really done a great job!
Sandra S — Google review
A lot of small animals/pets known from country side. Lots of different activities possible like volleyball, touching and feeding animals (spaghetti/carrots), riding small horses - fun for small kids! Hotdogs and usual ice cream was great. Other microwave food not so tasty - but you don’t need to order it :).
Jan ( — Google review
We had such a wonderful day, it far exceeded our expectations. The farm is so peaceful and natural, but with so many things to do. We got to see a baby goat being born which was very interesting and we loved feeding the rabbits and goats. It is great to have the animals around you and not behind a barrier. The lake with the pedal boats was a lovely spot for a nice picnic with a beach and sun loungers, such a surprise! There is a good selection of food and drinks in the cafe and things to buy for the children or souvenirs. We came without young children but still had a really enjoyable time. The swing onto the straw bales is fun. We would definitely come back.

Hirtshals fyr

Sights & Landmarks
Lighthouses
Hirtshals Fyr, an ancient lighthouse dating back to 1870, is a prominent landmark in the picturesque town of Hirtshals. Perched on the rocky coastline, it offers breathtaking views of the ocean and houses the local Maritime Museum. Accessible via a well-marked 600-meter trail leading to the beach, this attraction also provides insight into WW2 relics with old trench lines and bunker rooms to explore.
A great place to visit especially on a sunny day. To go on top you have to pay a ticket, otherwise you can just walk around the lighthouse, directly on the beach or next to the WWII bunkers located nearby
Pier W — Google review
Our visit to Hirtshals Lighthouse was short, as we were caught in heavy rain and a storm – but even in this dramatic weather, the lighthouse looked absolutely majestic. Its bright white tower rises above the coast with a calm strength, and you can instantly feel its importance as a guide for sailors on the rough North Sea. Even without climbing to the top (the storm made it impossible for us), just standing in front of it was impressive. The surrounding buildings are beautifully maintained and add to the charm of the place.
LétovItálii — Google review
The lighthouse is picturesque and I visited on a day with blue skies and snow. The views to the windswept coastline stunning. Added bonus is the incredible open air bunker museum which surrounds the lighthouse. Great informative plaques and one has been set up with bunk beds and furniture to show what they would have looked like in WWII.

Beautiful and wild place , we were there on May and was almost empty. Big area. Nice beach , but very windy. Really beautiful and amazing sea ! Nice views and great time for my family! You have to try seafood in nearby restaurants 🍤
Ulcia — Google review
The lighthouse was nice and the surrounding former defense works were really amazing to walk around
Nick E — Google review
Beautiful lighthouse with inexpensive fee to enter the inside and not so many stairs to get up there. We were lucky nobody was around and could enjoy the lighthouse and it's surroundings to ourselves.
Milan P — Google review
Amazing, definitely recommend. Little bit pricey but worth the climb. The view is spectacular. Just watch out for your heart and if you’re afraid of high places I would not go there. However if you are nog afraid of heights and you do not have heart problems take the climb and take in the amazing views.
Axel H — Google review
This lighthouse was really great to visit! The place is really picturesque and typical Danish. The view from the top is fantastic! Best part with our visit was that Søfartsstyrelsen was doing their annual service and the technician was really great explaining how it all worked. Even better was that we were temporarily allowed to go all the way up into the glass portion. This was absolutely amazing and a once in a time opportunity! We really appreciated being allowed this opportunity because our kids were amazed by it also.

Specialty Museums
The bunker museum Hirtshals offers a unique experience for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Visitors can explore the area, taking in beautiful views and walking through old trench lines that still run through the sand. The museum features a well-preserved bunker with a small exhibition inside, showcasing WW2 relics, weapons, pictures from the old days, and even a sea mine amidst the dunes. While exploring the site is free, a voluntary contribution is appreciated.
A star experience of WW2 bunkers. You can almost sense how the soldiers lived in this facility. Also the Olsen Banden exhibit is fun if you have seen the movies. You can roam the outside for free and it’s a great area for a walk. Inside is an exhibit of weapons and artifacts, the bunker and lots of history of the construction. Don’t miss a visit to this place
Allan K — Google review
During the second world war the Germans build a lot of bunkers on the west coast. This is one of those locations. It's a lovely walk true the dunes with the bunkers scattered around. You can just wonder around free of charge. If you want to get more info then what you would get from the signs you can hire a guide.
Dieuwke K — Google review
My favorite bunker complex ever!!! It has around 50-60 different bunkers, you can go inside most of them unfortunately Some are closed or filled with sand.
Quirijn N — Google review
Good information in the museum, nice to read the text in the museum and then take the coast path to visit the bunkers.
Tiki N — Google review
We had a lovely day here with some rain but a great experience, walking through the small paths. It feels like going back in time. The only thing we would have like would be for the kitchen bunker and sanitation bunker to be opened. They had padlocks on them and it seems you have to pay to see it. That was a shame and we would have loved to see that. All in all a great walk around and a good experience.
Queen D — Google review
A scary yet amazing place!.. The bunkers are still esily accesible and you can only imagine why they existed and how it was to be on duty there.
Marina C — Google review
Awesome place to visit while waiting for the boat. It feels like hide and seek for bunkers.
John V — Google review
It was a bit hard to follow the map, the one with all the bunkers, so the guided tour might have been a good investment. But definitely worth the trip!

The North Sea Oceanarium

Mentioned on
5 lists
Aquarium
Nature & Parks
The North Sea Oceanarium, located in North Jutland, is one of Europe's largest aquariums showcasing a diverse range of marine life from the North Sea. Visitors can observe seals in an outdoor basin and even interact with sea creatures at the touch pool. The town of Hirtshals, where the aquarium is situated, also offers scenic views from the picturesque lighthouse, sandy beaches, and local restaurants serving fresh seafood and traditional Danish dishes.
It was cold and grey outside and very windy when we decided to go to The North Sea Oceanarium. It was a good decision. There’s lots to see and do and it’s particularly good for families, but everyone will enjoy it. The tanks are enormous and many of the fish are too. Photo shows some sharks. The smallest creature we met was living in a tiny pipe and only coming out to eat hand fed mussels- he’s not keen on shrimps. The café looked good if you wanted lunch and there’s a really nice area for picnics if you bring your own food you can sit inside or out. We had an ice cream near the seal’s pool area outside. It was very easy to spend half a day there and I could have been there longer. Your ticket is valid for a year- if only we could come back.
Zoe N — Google review
Amazing aquarium, world class! The building was huge, and a full day was needed to experience most of the tanks and activities. The focus is on the North Sea, with several rare and unusual environments and exhibitions. The animals seamed to be healthy and well taken care of. The animals and plants together with knowledgeable staff, interactive activities (a machine to test if you are as strong as a lobster! …or a small beach crab), crab fishing for small kids, a huge calming open-sea tank the whole experience was wonderful. Make sure to not miss the feeding session performed with a real scuba diver!
Olof J — Google review
The Oceanarium was a delightful and informative place to visit, with many different fish and creatures to see and many interactive things for children to do as well. The feeding time at the main tank was interesting and I thought it was nice that there was a guide there to tell the audience about the tank and the different fish. The café was small but they offered many tasty options. The outside areas were also clean and free of seagulls!
Tiia R — Google review
A nice aquarium that shows the local Ocean life. The interactive activities that they have are fun and grateful for kids. We were lucky. It was not busy so they could easily participate in everything.. the downside of this was that we were out of the park relatively quickly
Nick E — Google review
We had a great time at this aquarium. It was absolutely huge and there was so much to see. We went there with our baby (11 months) and it was not busy at all so we could let her crawl in the quiet areas so she could explore it herself. The feeding show in the big aquarium is a must see, the biologist that dove in to feed the fish was so cool to see.
Lotte R — Google review
The biggest oceanarium on northern Europe - the sign stands for something and it is really big and there is lots of things and activities to see, try, educate and enjoy, especially for kids. The seals were fun, feeding of the fishes in the biggest tank as well and it is really one big enjoyment and learning opportunity in one nice package. Worth a visit if you have time to spend waiting for your ferry to Norway or Island.
Milan P — Google review
Lovely aquarium to visit, we visited with our 5 year old and there is a nice mix of kids activities and ocean sealife to exhibit. The food at this place has no right to be this good. We were expecting cafeteria food but the fish and chips was surprisingly some of the best I've had in years. Well fried, not oily and springled well with a bit of sea salt. YUM! All the other dishes I've seen looked very appetizing as well. The only downside I can think of is that while the toilets are clean, and during our stay we saw them cleaned twice. They stink quite badly. I suspect because for the standing men toilets they use no water which stinks up the place maybe?
Robin J — Google review
A nice experience. The oceanarium also takes its responsibility to educate the visitors on the negative impact of fishing and the humans in general. Very interactive, interesting — also for kids of all ages. Highlight is the seal feeding. 🦭

We visited the abbey as part of a shore excursion offered by Oceania Vista. I had no expectations of the visit and I was fascinated about every aspect due to the commentary provided but the two daughters of the owner one of whom is a historian and the other one who is the project manager for the restoration of the abbey. It was a very unique tour as the ladies shared not only the history of the estate but also what it was like growing up there. They have a copy of the Bayeux tapestry and a wonderful cafe and gift shop. I would highly recommend a visit. You will not be disappointed!
Sarah W — Google review
Staff interactions, left much to be desired. I'm familiar with various acquaintances and family members who have organized markets and art exhibitions at the monastery. Additionally, I visited the place during my childhood, but I haven't been back since then. Recently, I accompanied some friends from abroad to Børglum Monastery. Honestly, I didn't have the most pleasant time. The customer service from both the staff and owners seemed lacking in my view. The owner only spoke in Danish to my friends, who were unable to understand the language. Throughout our time at the monastery, we felt uncomfortable due to being constantly filmed and monitored by cameras, and the staff seemed to closely observe us and even took pictures of our group. To my surprise, the owners even contacted the police, apparently due to concerns about having tourists around. When we were leaving, the departure experience was also far from enjoyable, both in terms of their tone and attitude. Considering my personal experience, I find it difficult to recommend a visit to Børglum Monastery. My suggestion would be to explore alternative options.
Maggefus — Google review
beatiful place, many interesting exhibitions in one place - history, local life, art, clothes in last 100 years, Santa's proto. and beautiful garden around. plus a windmill nearby. church under reconstruction unil 2026. worth a visit, good as a stop on our cycling trip.
Hana C — Google review
Very nice atmosphere for the Christmas Market! The church is close for restaurations but some of the private parts are open to the public, a nice experience.
Deborah L — Google review
Great place. Would recommend a guided tour. The guides are the family heads who reside and tend the Abby. Lots of interesting stories. Ps I don’t know if they do English tours.
Christian N — Google review
I recently visited Børglum Kloster with high hopes, but unfortunately, my experience left me deeply disappointed. While the museum's exhibits showcased intriguing artifacts and rich history, the overall user experience was marred by several issues. My biggest concern was the treatment I encountered from the staff. Regrettably, I experienced instances of discrimination and racism during my visit. As a foreigner, I had hoped to feel welcomed and embraced by the museum's atmosphere. Instead, I encountered hostility and unwarranted prejudice from certain members of the staff. Such behaviour not only diminishes the museum's reputation but also creates an uncomfortable and unwelcoming environment for visitors. I firmly believe that museums should be inclusive spaces that celebrate diversity and foster cultural understanding. It is disheartening to witness such behaviour at Børglum Kloser. I strongly urge the museum management to address these issues promptly and implement measures to ensure that all visitors are treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their background. While the exhibits themselves were noteworthy and informative, the negative encounters I had overshadowed the overall experience. It is crucial for any institution to cultivate an atmosphere of inclusivity and respect, and I sincerely hope that Børglum Kloster takes immediate action to rectify these concerns. Until the museum demonstrates a commitment to addressing the reported issues and creating a welcoming environment for all visitors, I regrettably advise potential visitors to reconsider their plans to visit Børglum Kloster.
Viktor — Google review
Because we were interested in everything there was to see, we took quite some time to see everything, but for the owner of the place that took way to long and called the dansk Police on us. Without us knowing about that situation we we're pretty surprised to be finding out that the police was waiting for us outside 5 man strong. So no I can't recommend this place to visit in any way, the owner and the family is everything but welcoming, so that's a clear NO

An awesome place where you can see some of the world's largest birds of prey like the Condor or Stellar's Sea Eagle and my personal favorite, the Bearded Vulture. Nice experience for the whole family. Make sure to arrive a good 15-20 minutes before the show to visit the gift shop before the show and go to the toilet if needed. After the show there will be queues. Also, after the show starts it's not possible to enter the property anymore. So don't be late. You can buy tickets there as well but I bought them online.

Beautiful falcons, eagles, and a vulture - shown from quite up close! Lovely show with presentations both in Danish and English🤍
Katerina A — Google review
If you would like to support respectful and careful animal handling and learn more birds of prey, this is a great place. In an hour, you'd experience around 10 birds of different sizes and habit interact with their keeper freely. I have never seen the birds so closely in their natural habitat. The keepers are keen to answer the questions and educate about the birds of prey.
Aleksandra S — Google review
Very nice experience. If you haven't seen Eagles in a close distance, then it's a good chance for you. I just wish if they had the White head American Eagle. It's a nice experience especially for kids.

Love it, i have been many times. And its a mandatory visit when going to skagen. Can be mixed well with going to Råbjerg mile
Frederik A — Google review
Nice place. They got some nice eagles and the show was good as well. But may be there is still room for improving the performance of the show.
Fayyaz P — Google review
Amazing birds, I appreciate that the show is both in Danish and English, there's also a cool exhibition telling the history of birds.
Julia I — Google review
Worth all the money to see the majestic eagles and a vulture. Book tickets in advance since there is limited seats which might become full in case of peak season. Here you can buy icecream, simple foods, ørnereservatet souvenirs, caps, t-shirts etc.. well organized eagle, vulture and horse show. There are about 7 different eagles, 1 vulture, and 2 horses. There were no signs of animal abuse. As they repeatedly say, they use 1000 year old eagle hunting techniques. Good job organizing a show with these wild birds.

Råbjerg Mile is a massive sand dune covering 2 square kilometers, making it the largest migrating dune in Denmark and the largest of its kind in Europe. Situated between Skagen and Frederikshavn, this desert-like landscape offers a unique hiking experience with diverse fauna and stunning views. Visitors can hike to the top for panoramic vistas of the surrounding area, including seas on both ends.
This caught us with surprise, it’s like a dessert out of nowhere, super fun to walk/run/slide , kids enjoy a lot, though it was in spring and the temperature around 5C , we did manage to have fun, but would definitely love to go there in early summer. There is parking for all kind of vehicles, There are no toilets near by, And there is a lot of walking to do. A must visit place if you are around skagen area.

Wonderful surprise in middle of greenland. With nice sunny weather and strong wind we were like on Arrakis from Dune books/movies :-) It's really nicely photogenic place and the sand is everywhere, although the sand is not as fine as the one you can find on Sahara desert, but that is not a negative, just an observation. Plenty of fun especially for kids and dogs.
Milan P — Google review
Climbing this enormous dune – one of the higher spots in otherwise flat Denmark – rewards you with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and the sea. Sitting on top of a dune in northern Denmark was not what I expected when planning our road trip, yet it turned out to be one of the most powerful experiences. As you watch the ever-changing scenery, with untamed sand trying to conquer the local vegetation, you realize that fighting nature is impossible. Nature always finds its way – and compared to it, we are so small. It is a deeply grounding feeling, mixing freedom, defiance, and strength. Absolutely stunning. I highly recommend stopping here, taking a quiet moment, and letting the power of the dune resonate within you – a force that follows its own path, no matter what.
LétovItálii — Google review
A truly fascinating place — a stunning desert in the middle of nowhere that felt straight out of Dune! The vast white landscape, complete silence, and the feeling of complete isolation made it an unforgettable experience. We were the only ones there, and it felt almost otherworldly. Absolutely magical — we’ll definitely be back ✨

Surreal! Very unexpected to find an actual and dune in Denmark. It really feels like a scene from a movie based in an African or Arabian desert. The sand is soft and clean. With a stop for an hour or so on the way to or from Skagen

The closest thing to a desert you can come to experience in Scandinavia. When walking here in this dune it is almost like walking in a mini Sahara. But climb one of the small hills and you are presented with at stunning view of the nearby area

Museums
Vikingemuseet Lindholm Høje is a modern museum that offers a fascinating insight into Viking culture and history. The museum features exhibitions that showcase how the Vikings lived during the Iron and Viking Ages, including their diet, religious beliefs, agricultural practices, and daily lives. Visitors can explore remarkable reconstructions, panoramas, illustrations, and 3D animations based on recovered relics. Additionally, the museum houses unique artifacts from the Viking Age.
One of the most interesting Viking heritage sites I have seen. It has a museum, graveyard, village and field (ruins/outlines). It may look like piles and scattered rocks but is much more interesting than so. The shapes and sizes have different meaning. The museum has a lot of different archaeological artefacts and exebition from the Iron age to the middle ages.
Sick M — Google review
If you’re at all interested in Viking history, you must visit Lindholm Viking Museum! The site is incredibly well-preserved, offering a fascinating glimpse into Viking life and burial traditions. The museum itself is modern, informative, and thoughtfully curated—perfect for both casual visitors and history enthusiasts. The surrounding landscape adds to the atmosphere, making it a truly immersive experience.

Excellent museum with English/German/French translation. Not for all exhibits though. Possibly the best I've seen for stone age - bronze age - iron age and into early medieval/viking age. Friendly, knowledgeable staff.
Tim ( — Google review
The museum is relatively well done. That is to say for its size. It's visually appealing and offers interesting information about both the area right next to it, as well as the Limfjorden area more generally.

Nice place, but could be bigger, though the grounds are good and with good views as well. Always loved the area

Nice museum with two expositions. Lot of explanations but only in Danish, English and sometimes German and French.
Bart B — Google review
It's a small and nice visit. There some interactive bits to simulate a fire in a house, also a part with a video how to make a weapon from stone and then you get to see how it looks like. Its not mandatory to pay the museum to see the vicking graveyard but kinda complementa well and does not take much time and is not very expensive.

The Viking Museum in Aalborg impresses with its view of the ancient burial site and its engaging presentation of Viking life. It displays excavated objects and reconstructions that help visitors understand the historical and cultural context of the time. Great zoo experience with something for all ages. From dinosaurpark to pettingzoo, inovative varied information and some very friendly staff who are also very invested in telling about the different animals and their stories. Their food could do with some more quality vs pricelevel though.

Aalborg Zoo is a fantastic family-friendly destination! We had a wonderful time exploring the zoo with our kids. They were thrilled to see the impressive dinosaur exhibit, which sparked their imagination. The highlight for them was definitely the big cats – the tigers and lions were magnificent. We also enjoyed watching the zebras and giraffes, and the penguins were absolutely adorable. The lemurs added a playful touch to our visit. The zoo offers a great variety of animals and plenty of interactive experiences for children. Highly recommended for a fun-filled family day out!

A truly fantastic experience! I loved the focus on rare and endangered species like the magnificent Asian lions and Bornean orangutans. The zoo balances serious conservation with family fun; the Dinosaur Land exhibit, with its life-size characters, was an absolute highlight that the children loved. A must-visit attraction for anyone in the region!

2025-10-15 - Far from being the best zoo we have visited (family of 5 persons). It wasn’t a bad experience, but not really good either. We spend 4 hours here and was asked several times by our kids when should leave (age 10, 7 and 4). There was a Halloween theme, which was made quite well, but sadly it wasn’t enough to change our experience. Also parking the car was a mess as there wasn’t enough parking spots.

Must admit, I assumed they were appetizers. But, no. Apparently that's what you're expected to share for 5 tapas. On request, we received four more slices... When we asked for a few more slices, the message was that "the kitchen is closed, so sorry" ... So 3 1/2 slices of flute for a main meal... Thanks for some food. Tapas otherwise tasted excellent. Thingbæk Chalk Mines / Rebild Center

Museums
Historical landmark
Explore the Thingbæk Chalk Mines, located under the Rebild Center, where you can venture into manmade limestone caves and witness a unique sculpture museum. The underground experience offers a glimpse of hibernating bats and maintains a cool temperature even in summer. Above ground, visitors can enjoy an exhibit space with scenic views of Rold Skov forest. The surrounding area boasts lush green hills and enchanting forests, providing a picturesque backdrop for this historical site.
What a surprising place, we visited as a group on a last minute suggestion of "where shall we go". And it was fantastic. A rather ecclectic mix of things with the chalk mines and cold war exhibition, but it kept my son very entertained for a number of hours! And it was fascinating to show/teach him about the differences between east/west during the cold war. We were lucky enough to spot a couple of bats in the mind, and see the natural springs. The lady who worked there was so helpful, and some excellent English, along with providing audio tours in English (and German) which they only introduced last year.

Interesting place definitively worth the visit. The English audio-guide helped understand all variety displayed. Something interesting for the whole family including activities and games for children, historic perspectives of the region and history of our globe to wonderful sculptures inside the limestone cave.

Nice open air museum, great English tour guide. Learned a lot about the history of the Vikings in Denmark. Good parking facilities, on both museum locations. The historical site and the reconstructed village are about a 15 min. walk apart, or a 3 minutes by car.
Alfred D — Google review
Visiting Fyrkat Viking Museum was one of the most memorable stops on my journey in Denmark! Walking the upper ring of the old Viking fortress in torrential rain, all the while dodging piles of animal poo in wedge boots was challenging yet hysterical! It made it so much easier to imagine the real struggle and resilience of Viking life. You’re literally walking in their footsteps, mud and all. I don't think I would have lasted more than a day as a Viking! It's fun they offer the opportunity to dress up in Viking clothing for pictures. I also enjoyed exploring the recreated longhouses. Seeing how they lived, cooked, worked, and survived in such rugged spaces was a reality check as to how times and living arrangements have changed, thankfully! The museum is small, but it’s got plenty to see and do. Their tiny shop offers Viking souvenirs, crafts, and snacks to top off the experience. As a history lover, I especially enjoyed learning about Harald Bluetooth, not just the Viking King, but the surprising connection to the Bluetooth technology we use today. It’s one of those stories that makes you appreciate how the past still shapes our world. It was really helpful to have a guide. Many people were self guided and simply wandering, missing out on a lot of the cool history. It was an amazing opportunity to step into the world of the Vikings! Fyrkat is absolutely worth it. I recommend bringing some waterproof boots and a great adventurous spirit! It's a bit of a climb, but it's definitely a once in a lifetime experience!

The Museum is very interesting and part of the UNESCO heritage. Ticket gives access to three places: Stormandens gård with live presentations, Møllegården with the museum's exhibitions and the ancient monument/ringfort itself. After visiting the last 2 we spent quite some time with the kids at Møllegården and spontaneously asked if we could sleep in one of the old viking houses for the night...the manager found the Idea great, they organised some mattresses for us and we had access to the restroom and kitchen. We had a great time, spending time with some staff, dining together and exchanging stories. We slept very well inside the warm part of the house that we had heated up with fire. In 2026 they will officially open to the public for staying overnight, so we were test guests and we had a great time! Thanks for making this happen to Kurt, Rasmus and Sarah! Great experience and recommended for children to experience, nature and simple meaningful ways of living.

(Translated by Google) The animal park is cut through by the Bangsbo Å, and is part of the wildlife in the contiguous Bangsbo Ådal, where there are large areas of deciduous forest with wild red deer, roe deer, badgers, birds of prey, woodpeckers, small birds, and in the brook there are otters, kingfishers and trout. On the old damaged beech trees in the zoo, it can be a good place to find, for example, oystercatchers in December to February. The forest also offers a nature playground with a covered packed lunch hut with tables and benches as well as a barbecue (bring your own charcoal) and a campfire where you can prepare and enjoy food you have brought. The forest consists of both deciduous and coniferous forest. The broadleaf forest descends from remnants of the original broadleaf forest on the site, and the coniferous forest was established with state subsidies at the end of the 1800s. Bangsboskoven has always been a beautiful pleasure forest for Bangsbo's owners and visitors, and formed the framework for countless events and lively activity in the forest. With the purchase of the area, the municipality secured a fantastic recreational area adjacent to Pikkerbakken and Møllehuset.

Well worth a visit, an interesting mix of things to see and do. Does a good job of catering for non Danish speaking visitors but would have got 5 stars if more of the display information cards were in English

Really pleasantly surprised with how fun this museum was. I took my two kids, who are 9 & 11 and they absolutely loved it there! There are so many activities that you don’t have time to get bored. Very interactive and educative. It costs 110dkk to get in but for 130dkk you can get a season pass, so it was a no brainer! Already looking forward to going back as we didn’t have time to try everything after our 4 hour visit!

Sæby Church is a stunning gem that showcases the beauty of medieval artistry, particularly through its well-preserved frescoes and intricate floral motifs from the 15th century. Visitors are often captivated by its historical significance and architectural charm, making it a must-see for anyone interested in Danish culture. While some areas are currently undergoing renovation, which means certain frescoes may not be accessible to the public just yet, the overall ambiance of Sæby Church remains inviting and warm.
Great experience, food was very fresh and delicious

It was ok but not a special place. As it is a small place with not much places to visit it can be an option in a rainy and windy day
Hossein B — Google review
Unique for its well-preserved beautiful medieval frescoes and finely decorated flower motifs, dating back to the 15th century. So thankful for being allowed in for free; I bought some nice post cards and a brochure in return :) PS: Commenters with 3 stars or less demonstrate their own ignorance of medieval art, history and christianity. (Sorry, I usually don't write things like this, but for some unfathomable reason google blatantly flagged a 3-star review as most relevant for me... Come on...)

one of our favorite places here in Denmark for us. We visit it regularly and have a good restaurant too. The therapeutic effect of pool salt is very good💯

A little attraction of Mariager. Do not expect too much. Swimming pool is rather a my all but salt water experience paid off. There is also a salt related exhibition, a boutique, and picturesque caffe shop.

Quite a good experience particularly with opportunity to bath in Salt bath however could have been better with more consistent English translations. Video in main museum had subtitles in places but not all the time, video in salt mine exhibit had subtitles in English to show when video would play but then played whole video without subtitles. I get the impression from seat belts on seats this was designed to be an interactive experience but clearly wasn't working as that anymore. There were QR codes with links to videos on museum which were very good it just could have been a bit more consistent for the money.

Too expensive and everything is in Danish... The pool is cool, but looks extremely small! The layout is weird, it just doesn't know what it wants to be. So many ugly cinema chairs, a play corner for kids and much more in 20m2 while horribly put together... The salt mine itself isn't even a mine, it's a cheap horribly put together theme park ride that takes not even 5 minutes of your time. And everything is in control of 2 uninterested 14 year olds... Don't recommend going here at all.

Jooles F — Google review
Guestsailors be aware in this harbour!! Friendly information and advice. In this harbour you can dock at the green/free sign and pay for the days you want to stay there, like as almost every marina in Denmark, but in this marina "the owner" of the berth can suddenly change the colour from green/free to red/not free and then just come aboard on your boat without even knocking or ask permission and then tell you to leave "his spot" because its "his spot". A very unpleasant encounter with an "I'm more important than you" person. I hope you don't have the "pleasure" of meeting him. This is some of the worst kind of behaviour of seamanship I have encountered in Denmark. Very sad experience. Other than this the harbour is small, have 4/5 overpriced restaurants, a icecream shop and a Meny groceryshop. My advice is to just pass this to the next marina opportunity. Fair winds to you all......except for "that guy".
Bjorn M — Google review
Super cozy spot, which is severely family friendly and beautiful at once. Hals is an amazing city with a lot to offer. Especially when the museum is free of charge and the ice creams are so tasty. Safe harbour, with ticket box to pay harbour fee. Great facilities for sailors in the guest harbour with showers, toilets, kitchen, washing machine etc. The harbour area has some nice reataurants and eating places, ice cream kiosks and pancake house within 100 metres. 300 metres away you find a large grocery store with opening hours 7.30am to 10pm (7.30-22) 7 days a week in the high season. Himmelbjergtårnet, also known as Himmel Mountain, is a popular destination in Denmark with easy trekking trails and clear signage to guide hikers. It is accessible from Ry station, although transportation options are limited. According to Danish legend, it was once the dwelling place of gods. The mountain offers stunning views and has been cleared of trees on some slopes to provide panoramic vistas of Silkeborg lakes.
One of highest natural places in Denmark. They have removed trees from some slopes to enable nice views towards Silkebork lakes.

Randers Regnskov

Zoo
Outdoor Activities
Randers Regnskov is a renowned tropical zoo and one of the top attractions in Randers. The main highlight of this indoor zoo is its three dome-enclosed rainforest habitats representing Africa, Asia, and South America. Visitors can explore adventure trails, rope bridges, and waterfalls while observing free-roaming animals like crocodiles, monkeys, manatees, pythons, and iguanas.
It's a really nice zoo with a lot to offer. First of all, be sure to be there early in the morning (10-15 minutes before opening). Otherwise, parking will be a serious problem. We arrived 20 minutes past the opening time, and the parking was about 60% full. They have some special storage rooms for small and big strollers, which is very useful. There are also small storage units for things like backpacks, jackets, etc, but they work with 2 kr. Coins, so don't waste any other type. If you don't bring coins along, you can still exchange money for some special coins to use at the gift shop. Be careful what you need to store and what you take, because you need to use again 2 kr. Coins, every time you open and close the locker. Nice inside restaurant, with a big area to sit, eat and relax. If you have some snacks or sandwiches from home, there is an outside area that you can use for that. There are small "games" you can play with your entourage, like every time you enter an area, you can try to find and identify all the animals. The tigers enclosure is next to the picnic area, so if you're lucky, you can enjoy your sandwich, while the tiger enjoys his meal. It's a really good place to spend your day in. That's about all the time you need to enjoy this zoo.
Radu O — Google review
This zoo was beyond our expectations, it has several species of animals that one may not found in every other zoo. It is a tropical zoo with animals from Asia, Africa & South America and many of those are rarest animal species. It has really nice playgrounds and cafes too. One can easily spend 4-5 hours here.
Sweta K — Google review
Do you want a jungle adventure without breaking the bank, this place could be for you. 3 bio domes houses numerous fish, birds, insects and animals like monkeys, Sloth, Crocodile s and many other. We visited this place in start of June and had a great experience. Familys with children will have a splendid time here. After your adventure you can enjoy some food in the cafe or visit a shop with merchandise. I recommend this place for children in all ages and for all interested in biology and animals.
Rene N — Google review
Generally good. But you can tell that the zoo is coming into its years. Way too crowed!! People are pushing through with their big kiddie bicycle trailers or huge prams. It’s also very loud even if signs are asking visitors to be quiet. Still kids are loving it and the new outdoor area is nice.
Sara B — Google review
A must see if you are visiting the area! I was really surprised by the diversity of the ecosystems on display here. Each space was beautifully constructed and everything seemed natural and wild. There were a lot more animals here than I had expected. The info cards about each animal were a nice addition and I learned many new bits of trivia during the visit.
Tiia R — Google review
I love Randers Rainforest even though I live in Copenhagen I have now been there twice, this last time on my own so that I could take my time. I want to go again soon.
Mette K — Google review
This is how a zoo should be! They way they build the zoo is briljant everything seems to be one. A little ledge zo the turtles dont run away but you can step in with them. A little house with a window with big cuddly cats, a cave with bats where they nearly hit you head, really cool! pro tip, if you have binoculairs bring them! To see the birds upclose is even cooler. Another tip, my pregnant wife needed a few times to sit. And everytime you do you wil discover new animals, so take your time. All signs have English on them and they have really smart signs with al the animals on them you might wanna take a photo of them zo you can cross off what you found, a little where is Waldo. We came around 13:00 and parking was really full, we had to wait til somebody left. We waited 5 minutes so not that long. We spend like 3 hours and took our time and had a little lunch. And we forget to see the animals outside… I saw that in the other reviews. Sometimes the signs on the doors are a bit demotivating, something Danisch stands on the door and it probable says you may not eat in there and pet animals but if you cannot read it it could also say dont go in here. Will come back!

My partner booked this as a surprise for my birthday , we are staying for a week in Denmark and we both thought it was amazing! We were greeted by a lovely man called Mathias who was both friendly and informative, he also went out of his way to help us with one of the videos so we could watch in English. As a massive Elvis fan this is a must , so many gems in this collection , it’s just an Elvis Lovers dream. The enthusiasm and excitment Henrik has for Elvis is so nice to see , I really hope this place stays open for ever! We visited on a weekday around 10:30 we arrived and had the whole museum to ourselves! It was great to have that time to leisurely look at everything. We had food in the highway 51 diner too, it’s great if you eat meat as there’s a ton of options but as a vegetarian I found myself left with a few options , the veggie burger or the PB & J sandwich or the salads I think, it’s a great vibe but it would be nice to have some more varied vegetarian options too. However, food was hot and well seasoned which is really important! The gift shop was maybe lacking some more variety , there’s a ton of books, cd’s and vinyls but not much on merchandise front like t shirts, decorative items etc. There are lots of photos to be taken in and around the mansion, the Johnny cash museum and the tupelo house was really cool also and it’s nice to have Elvis music playing everywhere, even outside! 10/10 would recommend and if we ever come back to Denmark we will definitely be visiting again! Thank you to everyone as this is a really special place.

Ejer Bavnehøj is a mountain peak with a commemorative tower at the summit and a history as a warning beacon location. It offers breathtaking views of the beautiful surroundings and an opportunity for a walk in the area. Mollehoj, Denmark's highest natural point, is just about 500 meters away from Ejer Bavnehøj, making it worth visiting.
Ejer Bavnehøj is the third-highest natural point in Denmark (170.35 m). At its summit is a 13 m tall tower, built in 1924, commemorating the reunion of the south of Jutland with the rest of Denmark after the First World War. Historically Ejer Bavnehøj was mostly known as a site for a beacon where signal-fires were lit in order to warn the military and local population if the enemy were on the way. Entry tricket for the tower costs 10 DKK paid by MobilPay.

The grandeur of this historical site makes it one of the top attractions in Randers. Visitors can explore the castle and witness renaissance Denmark, while also enjoying various historic events held during summer and Christmas. The museum features beautifully furnished rooms with original and recreated items, providing insight into farming history.
A lovely historical site that has been kept in immaculate condition. Friendly staff, amazing access all areas - very rare to find such a high quality museum that is so open to visitors. Very interesting for visitors of all ages, especially the changes through the different periods (possibly less interesting for children under 10, but that is the nature of historical sites). There is even a possibility to dress in a historical fashion!

Gammel Estrup is a nice historical site that is well maintained and has beautiful grounds, there are many rooms furnished and decorated with both original and recreated items. The entry ticket also gives you access to the grøn museum, which is a walk through the history of farming. I would recommend a visit especially if you like visiting castles and old estates, the one downside is that both Gammel Estrup and the Grøn Museum are fairly static, so there isn't much for younger children to interact with, which is okay but it means that how excited and engaged they will be almost entirely depends on how good of a storyteller you are. Understandably a lot of the set pieces are cordoned off, which makes sense for preservation purposes, but does make you feel a little disconnected. Overall, it was a nice experience and worth the time, the staff we interacted with were all very friendly, and there are a few activities for children like stilts they can walk on that are fun too. You could easily spend 1-2 hours here, more if you take it slow and have a coffee or snack.

I wish we couldve stayed longer to take it all in some more, this manor is fascinating and beautiful! We loved learning about it and getting a peek into its history.

A beautiful Castle and display of Danish heritage and nature. It was a part of a ticket to det grønne Museum , and overwhelmed me with the collection and access they give to it .

Very cool muesum and grounds to explore. The brick manor house is an excellent example how the danish nobility lived through the ages. There are also many other exhibits in different buildings on the grounds, like a blacksmith or an exhibit on farm equipment.

Lots to see and experience! Nice to be able to walk freely within the castle. Nice restaurant by the entrance with good food and excellent service. Well worth the entrance fee.
