Spooky place. Great beach and dunes nearby. One of the places of Montalbano
Matti — Google review
The Penna Furnace was built between 1909 and 1912. The site of "Punta Pisciotto" was chosen for several reasons: the sufficiently deep seabed for ship docking, the presence of a nearby railway, a clay quarry about 200 meters away for raw materials, and ample water availability from a local karstic spring. The facility produced bricks, exported to many Mediterranean countries. Operations ran from sunrise to dusk, May to September, and ceased with the onset of rain. The furnace's activity ceased on the night of January 26, 1924, due to an arson that destroyed it within hours. A discarded letter attributed the act to socialists.
Maurizio M — Google review
An interesting piece of industrial heritage overlooking some splendid sea views. A must visit for all Montalbano fans as it was filmed as the notorious 'mannara'.

This place has a history and a mysterious one too as to why it closed. It's just ruins but the panoramic view from there at sunset is breathtaking!

very nice place just at the end of sampieri beach. there are fences so you cant really get in, for safety purposes, but is just nice to walk around if you are in the area.

Interesting location and the history of why this place has been burned down to stop industrialisation. This place was giving work to a hundred people and somebody thought this was not good! Stunning beach around and no facilities. So bring your water!

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Isola delle Correnti, also known as the Island of Currents, is a charming rustic island located at Sicily's southern tip. It offers stunning panoramic views, clear waters, and is home to a towering 19th-century lighthouse. The island's fine sugar-like sands are shaped by the opposing currents of the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean. This creates paler colored clear waters with more waves compared to northern Sicilian beaches.
Idyllic location with a fabulous little beach bar. Crisp cold local beer and seafood fare. Absolutely unforgettable way to spend the day while travelling through Sicily.

(Translated by Google) Sicily's southernmost islet, with a beautiful 360-degree view. It's a shame about the lighthouse, which is completely abandoned and unsafe. It should be renovated and made accessible to tourists, because doing so would mean people would go there anyway, and it's very dangerous. If you're in the area, it's worth a visit.

Tapas, cocktails & simple bistro fare, served on beach loungers in view of a coastal island.
A nice beach, the business is well organized, the restaurant provides good food, even during high season (we went in August), reasonable price.

Love it here! The Lido is well kept, the staff is friendly and depending on the wind you can either swim or do some light snorkeling. The view on the island and the Southernmost sopt of Italy are also lovely.
Maximilian Z — Google review
Fantastic sunsets, that you can enjoy in the Scialai bar, Grab something to eat as the food is nice. On the left you will have Isola del Correnti in front of a marvelous beach with crystal cereal water . ,💞
Aga R — Google review
The lido itself is a really nice place, well organised with quality food, good cocktails and good services in general. However, the sea, on the day that we were there, wasn't so great and the beach was full of little irritating flies. Nice.place to.enjoy a cocktail and watch the sun set into the sea

Lido Playa Carratois

Mentioned on
1 list
Lido
Outdoor Activities
Lido Playa Carratois, located near Syracuse, is a stunning public beach with fine golden sand and clear, shallow waters. It's an ideal spot for relaxation and windsurfing on windy days. The beach offers umbrella rentals and has beach clubs and bars nearby. Visitors can enjoy the soft sand, crystal-clear water, and beautiful sunsets. While there are limited facilities, it's a peaceful and picturesque destination for those seeking a tranquil beach experience.
Wonderful beach, clean and warm water. There are few establishments around therefore you’ll always find someone open if you’d like to have a quick bite or a drink…or if you’ll have to use the loo. Not aure about the prices of beds and umbrella as we didn’t need them. The parking spaces are off-road so be careful when driving there as you can easily damage the car if you don’t pay attention. From time to time you’ll find a local guy asking, without insisting, for some change in exchange for “looking after the car” while you’re at the beach. He’s a good guy and if you ask he gives you recommendation on what to do or visit in the local area. If you have some spare coins, just give them to him. It’ll make him happy.
Stefano — Google review
Beautiful secluded beach suitable for relaxing and eating great food
Fardad G — Google review
One of the best beaches I ever set foot on. There are many "lidi" way overpriced. €50 for a third row beach umbrella with a half empty place is kind of a shame because the rest is nice.
Manuel C — Google review
Just arrived here,45 euro for 2 beda and parasol,no even small table, shower 0,50 cent euro, terrible! Looks really old! The beach is nice, clear water , I would not to take a risk to eat here.
Kristina K — Google review
Friendly enough staff but way overpriced for what they propose (both beach and restaurant) Setting is ok on the beach. We never got our meal because they forgot due to a 'busy service' but did not bother compensating or making an effort to apologise. Showers need to be paid extra. Toilets are not the cleanest.
Gigi D — Google review
Nice, this quiet beach was a bit windy. For laying sunbathing and reading a book . But had a lovely walk. When walking back towards the wind, stay right on the beach where the Sands damp so you don't get sand in your eyes.
Cule T — Google review
It's beautiful: the sand is nice and soft, the water is crystal clear! Definitely recommend to come here, it's beautiful in every season if you enjoy the sea

Seafood restaurant
Marisco is a popular restaurant located in Marina di Ragusa, Sicily. The area was historically known as Mazzarelli and gained prosperity in the late 19th century due to trade. Marisco offers a delightful dining experience with its diverse menu and inviting ambiance. It is among the top-rated restaurants in Marina di Ragusa, attracting visitors with its Sicilian and pizza offerings. The restaurant's reputation for fantastic dinner experiences has made it a must-visit dining destination in the region.
This restaurant offers a wonderful dining experience for seafood lovers. I had pasta with mixed seafood, and it was perfectly prepared — the pasta cooked just right and the seafood fresh and flavorful. Accessing the menu was simple by scanning a QR code with my phone, and the English version made it easy to browse the options. The service was excellent, with polite and attentive staff who made sure everything arrived quickly and as ordered. The atmosphere was relaxed and pleasant, ideal for enjoying a good meal after a day out. Portions were generous, and the prices felt reasonable considering the quality and freshness of the dishes. Overall, a great spot to enjoy fresh seafood and a satisfying meal. I would happily return.
Matyáš S — Google review
Marisco features a simple interior. The premises are clean, and modern music is played, often at a louder volume. The service at Marisco was good. The waitress was friendly. Orders were taken and served promptly. The presentation of the dishes was simple but appealing. The quality of the ingredients was good, reflected in the taste of the dishes. We enjoyed an appetizer, a first and second course, accompanied by sparkling wine for the appetizer and white wine for the main course. The price-performance ratio is aligned with the restaurant’s location. The high foot traffic and the prime location are reflected in the prices. A unique feature is the option to choose fresh lobster or crayfish from an aquarium for personal preparation. Marisco is a good restaurant in a prime location. It is a great place to have dinner after a long day at the beach.
Dimitri B — Google review
You know those evenings when everything goes wrong and the night is ruined? That was exactly our experience here. The red prawns were squashed, and I had definitely eaten fresher ones just a couple of days earlier in Syracuse. Nobody cleaned the prawns properly — the vein was still there. The wine list is small, and not all the wines were available (for example, no Donnafugata). Service is focused on quantity, not quality. They brought the appetizers but forgot the plates. Cutlery was not completely clean. Dishes took a long time to arrive. Throughout the whole evening I just wanted to leave. They spoiled both the evening and my appetite. Dirty plates are only taken away if you put them on the edge of the table — otherwise, the waiters just ignore them when they pass by. We were seated between two tables full of kids who were screaming, shouting (honestly, it felt like having dinner with wine in a kindergarten) and watching cartoons on their phones. Not exactly a romantic dinner. Please, create some zoning — couples separately, families with kids separately. And if that’s not possible, at least warn your guests in advance. How does this place have a 4-star rating? It should be around 3.3 at best. For mass tourism — maybe okay. In the end, this felt more like a noisy family canteen on the beach than a seafood restaurant. Fine if you just want to eat quickly and feed the kids — but it’s the embodiment of the worst side of Sicily. Owners, what did you expect when you seat people this way without informing them? You deserve this remark and this review. And don’t even dream of the Michelin Guide — this is not your league.
Sergey M — Google review
We called in here as we were passing at about 8pm (off season), no issues getting a table. Food was delicious, as was the recommended wine. The staff were friendly and helpful. The prices are good and value for money.
Michael W — Google review
Matisco was able to accommodate a group of 12 hungry cyclists at the end of our first day. The selections on the menu were vast and the staff were helpful even with the language barrier. The freshest seafood and pasta. I had the muscles and the seafood ravioli with pistachio sauce. Very delightful.

(Translated by Google) I am a true Pozzallese! As I was born in a house on Via Marconi in Pozzallo, today in the year 2025 I am 68 years old, I have lived in Milan for 64 years, and almost every year I have always come to Pozzallo on holiday, when I was 15 the Cabrera tower and the warehouses were truly something evocative! First of all: the sea beat on the front facade of the tower, the boats arrived at the small port bringing the fish caught by the fishing boats anchored offshore in front of this small port, and where today there are restaurants on this small port, in those years they sold the fish received from the boats. In the history of the Cabrera tower, the tower was built to protect the town but above all for the storage of various goods, stored in the warehouses of this small port, I'm sorry to say but it was better before, and the same thing that in the Piazza del Duomo in Milan, the restaurants put the tables and in the sacristy, they opened the restaurant! The thing, it would be just laughable, then the port ruined everything, with its construction, the sea currents changed, today the tower is on the sand, and walking barefoot in the water of the seashore, you feel pain under your feet, as today the currents in the sea of Pozzallo carry the sand, and there is no longer a current that removes it, many years ago walking in the water, was like walking on a foam mattress, today it feels like walking in an airport, and I'm sure that at this rate, in the future there will be an airport in front of the tower, today the beach of Pozzallo compared to many years ago is at least 10 times wider! And every year it will be worse!

Mentioned on

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Donnafugata Castle is an impressive estate that has been converted into a museum, showcasing period furnishings and clothing. The gardens are also notable, with raspberry and red fruit syrup flavors accented by wood and blood notes. On the palate, it's rich with delicate tannins and echoes of fruit in the finish. Visitors can explore a stone maze on the grounds before enjoying a meal at one of the castle's restaurants or picnicking in the gardens.
Spent over 3-hours exploring. The castle and garden grounds were very organized. Inside was amazing with historical information and items. I enjoyed reading about the Baron and how he would joke around. Many structures, indoor features and items were placed or constructed because of his sense of humor. It was fantastic.

A visit to Castello di Donnafugata in Ragusa is truly a magical experience. I highly recommend purchasing the full package, as it allows you to enjoy every part of this unique site. The Costume Hall is a real highlight, showcasing a fascinating collection of costumes from different eras – a journey through history brought to life with elegance and detail. The castle itself is beautifully preserved, giving you a glimpse into its grandeur and the stories hidden within its walls. Stepping outside, the gardens are simply outstanding. Take your time to explore the lush greenery, the charming pathways, and the grand terrace, which offers magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. A must-try activity is the labyrinth in the garden – fun, a little mysterious, and perfect for both adults and children. From history and culture to nature and play, Castello di Donnafugata offers it all. A place where the past meets beauty, making it an unforgettable stop in Ragusa. 🌿🏰✨

Absolute must see. Beautiful costume museum and 29 well furnished rooms to get a sense how Sicilian nobles lived. Charming garden with a labyrinth.

A great experience! I recommend this castle. For a small fee, you are busy for at least 3 hours. A very interesting & informative costume display, a big tour inside the castle rooms with very detailed info panels that guide you and a very nice and big garden to wander in. The garden especially is very attractive and entertaining. Access is given even to the labyrinth of the castle. I hope they will start working on upkeeping/restoring the rooms in the castle to prevent more decay, it would be a pity otherwise.
Diana F — Google review
So interesting history and so many things to do there. It was definitely one of the highlights for our trip. You pay only 4€ to go inside the castle and another 3€ to go at the gardens and higher at the tower. For me it's a must visit place!
Lia F — Google review
Wonderful place where you can easily spend the whole day, especially if you have kids. Both the neo-gothical castle and the surrounding areas offer various activities and things to see and learn. Part of the ground floor of the castle is dedicated to a fashion exposition that has many original historic garments and dresses on display. Its well worth visiting if only from the historical perspective. The self-guided tour of the castle itself will take you through many different rooms containing various pieces of vintage furniture and decorations. Some of the rooms are nicely restored, but some are in dire need of maintenance. Afterwards, we were directed to visit the vast castle gardens, which are beautiful and well maintained and feature interesting structures, like the intricate labyrinth. In addition, a small cafe/souvenir shop is located directly in the castle, while a couple of restaurants and a gelateria can be found just at the entrance to the castle. However, we didn't visit either of them. There is also a small cattle farm and even a tiny playground behind the restaurants. If arriving by car, you can park for free on the access road, but you stand a better chance to park on the paid parking for €2.50/day per vehicle. Overall, we enjoyed the visit to the Donnafugata cadtle and definitely recommend this place if you are in the area.

A fantastic Castello of history and also the Meseo of Costumes was such a great insite to what was worn dating back many hundreds of years. Very original furniture which was a pleasure to see first hand. The massive gardens that surrounded the Castello was great too

Very good experience; castle is nice outside, rooms inside are very well preserved….it seems a little royal palace. Each room has a description. Garden is pleasant, it is not huge but you can spend time outside and enjoy…also the labyrinth.

Duomo di San Giorgio is a renowned 18th-century cathedral featuring a neoclassical dome and a baroque facade. Surrounding the cathedral are significant civic and military buildings, including the ruins of the 13th-century Castle of the Counts of Modica and the 17th-century Palazzo Castro-Polara-Grimaldi. In Modica Alta, visitors can explore the Church of St.
A beautiful church. The architecture is amazing. If it’s open, pay the 2€ to go up to the bell tower. Really a nice place.

The Duomo di San Giorgio in Modica is absolutely stunning! It’s a beautiful example of Sicilian Baroque style and sits high up on a massive staircase with 250 steps, giving you amazing views of the city. The church itself has this grand, three-tiered façade and a really intricate interior, full of details that show off Modica’s rich history and artistic flair. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is pretty cool. If you’re fit enough to tackle the steep stairs, you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of Modica’s terracotta rooftops. Definitely a must-see if you’re ever in the area!
Małgosia T — Google review
The Chiesa di San Giorgio offers a distinct and rewarding experience compared to other Modica churches. Located high up in Modica Superiore, the journey to the entrance is half the reward: you ascend via a series of majestic, tiered staircases, which were beautifully covered with blooming flowers during our visit, making the climb feel incredibly scenic. Once you reach the top, the panoramic view of the city of Modica, with its Baroque rooftops spilling down the hillside, is spectacular and completely worth the effort. Crucially, the church felt noticeably less crowded than its counterpart, Chiesa San Pietro. This provided a much more contemplative and peaceful atmosphere, allowing us to fully appreciate the dramatic architecture and the quiet grandeur of the surrounding urban landscape. San Giorgio is considered one of the finest examples of Sicilian Baroque architecture and is often hailed as a masterpiece of the style, particularly by the famed architect Rosario Gagliardi. The imposing façade, which seems to rise organically from the staircase, is truly breathtaking. If you only have time for one Baroque masterpiece in Modica, or if you prefer a quieter, more scenic visit with an incredible payoff view, San Giorgio is the absolute must-see.

The Cathedral of Saint George stands as a majestic testament to Sicilian Baroque architecture, captivating visitors with its ornate facades, elaborate sculptures, and soaring domes. Dating back to the 14th century, the cathedral has undergone various renovations and expansions, each adding to its grandeur and historical significance. Stepping inside the play of light on marble surfaces and the intricate detailing of the interior create an atmosphere of reverence and wonder. One of the highlights of a visit to Modica Cathedral is ascending its bell tower, offering panoramic views of the cityscape below. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of Sicilian craftsmanship and a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the rich cultural tapestry of this region.

One of the most renowned beaches within the reserve is Cala Mosche, which is hidden by a cove, offering calm and clear waters along with warm temperatures.
Amazing and quiet place, perfect not just for the birdwatching but also for an easy walk beach to beach. It's possible to reach every beach by walking, starting from one pf the five gates of the natural site

Vendicari is beautiful. With the ticket you get access to 5 beaches. Walking to each take plenty of time so decide on one or two to visit if you really want to walk. Otherwise go by car. Note. The road is bad. You will find many cars coming and going both ways. Be careful not to scratch your car against the plants/branches coming towards you. A bit of a pain in the bum. Otherwise the beach is beautiful.

5€ for a car. There a tons of small trees and some bushes. We were able to park our car in the shade so it didn‘t get too hot. You will have to walk a bit back along the street to enter the national park / to the beaches.

We were here during low season. The parking was free and we had a beer with caponata in the bar. The food was excellent, the place quiet with great service. Staff was very good. The walk to the beach is no more than 20 minutes and is easy to do with sandals. Only problem is that the beach was windy. Highly recommend in a week day during low season, but I can imagine this place really busy during summer.

Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Noto Cathedral, a reconstructed 18th-century Sicilian baroque cathedral with a neoclassical dome, is located in the city of Noto, which is renowned for its Baroque palaces and churches. The cathedral was partially reconstructed after being damaged by an earthquake. Noto itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has a tourism-driven economy due to its proximity to nature reserves and beautiful beaches.
The cathedral is absolutely beautiful, although the whole of Noto deserves a mention. The architecture is stunning and a lot of work has obviously gone into restoring and maintaining it. Unlike other places in Sicily there is a real effort to keep the city clean and appealing. I can highly recommend a visit, although if beautiful places of worship are your main interest, my (now no longer) secret tip and absolute favourite is Cattedrale Palazzolo Acreide in the mountains between Francofonte and Modica. There is none more beautiful.

Pleasant walk through the Cathedral. Some very interesting art pieces on the walls. You can feel stepping back in time and image the history that took place here long before we arrived.

Noto Cathedral, also known as Cattedrale di San Nicolò, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Noto, Sicily, Italy. Dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, it’s a prime example of Sicilian Baroque architecture. Construction began in the early 18th century after the 1693 earthquake and was completed in 1776. The cathedral features a stunning limestone façade with two bell towers, a monumental staircase, and a central bronze portal depicting scenes from Saint Conrad Confalonieri’s life. Its dome collapsed in 1996 due to structural issues from a 1990 earthquake but was rebuilt, and the cathedral reopened in 2007. The interior, with a Latin cross layout, houses Saint Conrad’s relics and modern frescoes. It’s part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto.
Murat K — Google review
We visited the Cathedral of Noto and were truly impressed. Getting there was very easy – it’s about an hour’s drive from Catania on a smooth and convenient highway. Parking was no problem at all, we even found a free spot right next to the cathedral, which was a big plus. The cathedral itself is located right in the heart of the city, just as you’d expect. While there were some tourists around, it wasn’t overly crowded like in Taormina, which made the visit much more pleasant. The cathedral is stunning from the outside, but equally impressive inside – and best of all, admission is free. It’s definitely worth a visit, whether as part of a day trip or even just a half-day tour, since Noto is not a very large town. Still, there are several beautiful sights to explore, and the cathedral alone makes the trip more than worthwhile.
Leo ( — Google review
The Noto Cathedral is the magnificent centerpiece of Noto, dominating the main square and serving as the city's undisputed Baroque showstopper. Its immense staircase and towering façade are incredibly impressive, but the real magic happens at sunset or late afternoon. As the sun begins to dip, the warm, honey-colored limestone of the cathedral is illuminated by a deep golden light, making the entire structure seem to glow. This is the absolute best time to visit and photograph this stunning example of Sicilian Baroque architecture. We took the advice to sit on the grand staircase for almost 30 minutes, and it was the perfect decision. The steps provide natural seating where you can relax, people-watch, and simply absorb the beauty of the city, all while enjoying the incredible view of the Duomo and the surrounding piazza bathed in that beautiful evening light. It’s a moment of pure, tranquil enjoyment. While the interior is also beautifully restored and worth seeing, the power of this cathedral lies in its exterior presence and its integration into the stunning urban landscape of Noto. It is an unmissable experience.
Halide E — Google review
The cathedral sits beautifully at the top of the main staircase and is one of the highlights of Noto’s baroque architecture. The facade is grand and elegant, and the interior, while simpler, still feels impressive thanks to the height and the soft light coming through the windows. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re walking through the historic center. The view of the cathedral from the bottom of the steps is especially striking.
Andrea O — Google review

Nicolaci Palace, also known as Palazzo Nicolaci, is a Baroque gem located in Noto, Sicily. This former residence of a wealthy family boasts ornate decor and posh furnishings on display. The palace is famous for its unique balconies that adorn Via Nicolaci, showcasing Baroque creativity at its finest.
Included in the combo tour with the theatre Di Lorenzo and the City Hall (total a tenner). On its own it’s €4 and absolutely worth it. Whilst not as WOW as Palazzo Castellucio, the ballroom is magnificent and the rest of the rooms lovely enough to stroll through. English language placards in most of the rooms if I do recall but they offer general histories and don’t detail all the wonderful artifacts.

An opulent Baroque palace belonging to the princes of Villadorata. You can visit some of the grand rooms including the lavishly decorated ballroom where piano recitals are sometimes held. Worth noting are the balconies with baroque masks for corbels, typical of the Sicilian Baroque style.

Step in and touch the past of Noto. Interesting place showing you the history of this famous local family as well as their way from France to Italy and Sicily in this case. Walking around in the rooms one has the opportunity to see the "old" way of spending time, having guests, entertaining family and friends in the music room as well as enjoy the view from the balcony. It is worth visiting and exploring this house full of marble.

Visitors have praised the warm welcome and knowledge shared by staff during tours, which include insights into the winemaking process and the history of the region.
This was a sort of pilgrimage trip for me, after enjoying COS wines for many years, and it did not disappoint! Fabio, our host, was engaging, knowledgeable, and passionate, and gave us lots of great recommendations for the rest of our trip. Worth the drive if you are staying further away.

Fabio is a very nice person and speaks fluent English. Highly recommended.

Riserva Naturale Cavagrande del Cassibile is a stunning nature reserve in southeast Sicily, offering fantastic trails and a limestone-covered canyon carved by the Cassibile river. Hikers can embark on a downhill trek to Laghetti di Cavagrande, a natural pool nestled within the valley. The hour-long hike downwards requires sturdy hiking boots due to slippery terrain, but rewards with sightings of colorful butterflies and silvery lizards.
Beautiful place, definitely worth the little hike. Parking is at the top at the bar, we paid 4 eur, plus 2 eur to enter the route down. We were in second half of May on a sunny Monday, the weather was perfect, not so many people, the water was refreshing, you can swim around the pools or sit under the little waterfall, the scenery is stunning. Great place. The drive there is already nice, especially the last few hundred meters. The walk down was nice and once arrived stunning place. Great swimming and views. Don’t forget to take enough water, some food and wear good walking shoes. The walk up is pretty tough, especially in full sun.

We arrived late morning. Originally tried using Apple Maps to get here, but it took us to the wrong spot. It’s beautiful hike down, make sure you have hiking boots. Bring a towel and swim suet as well. The pools at the bottom are beautiful. The climb back up is hard and you will need lots of water and rests.

Beautiful place. It is very nice and easy hike. The natural pools are really nice and clean, but a bit cold for my taste.

Bit of a walk, 40 mins via route B, winding slope. 50 mins back up via route A, a lot and I mean a lot of steps but lots of shade as well

Fantastic walk to the lagoons. A few options for walking routes from the ticket desk which are clearly signposted during the walk. €2 each to enter and we paid €4 to park at the nearby car park.

In a comfortable pace we were up in 40 minutes, much better than we expected.

The Lido Fontane Bianche Beach is a delightful coastal spot with adjacent hotels and cafes offering rental umbrellas and loungers. The beach features crystal-clear water devoid of weeds, making it an ideal spot for swimming. Visitors can grab a bite or drink from the nearby restaurant while enjoying the calm waters. This warm beach is perfect for an October visit, with shower and toilet amenities as well as a great bar on-site to enjoy.
Very beautiful beach, with gorgeous sand and cristal clear water. I love the type of sunbeds they have, extremely comfortable and the small garbage/ashtray bins attached to the umbrellas are making a big difference.
Simona B — Google review
Nice azure water, beach quite clean, just tge public part we went in (stopping here just for 3 hours) was not having any shower or change room. 2 bars selling drinks and food nearby. Beach entry suitable for kids, small waves during the day. Photo was edited to remove me and my kid.
Jan R — Google review
The beach itself is really beautiful, with clear waters that are warm in some places and colder in others. There are rocks that we really enjoyed diving from. Luckily, the day we were there, there was no wind and the water was not too dirty. As for parking, you can leave your car for free about a 10-15 minute walk from the beach or there are paid parking lots. The main problem, however, is the management of the space: practically 90% of the beach is taken up by private beaches, leaving only a small 10% of the beach free. Imagine how many people crowded into this small space, with umbrellas stacked on top of each other and people carrying speakers, making a huge racket. We also noticed illegal beach clubs, literally setting up umbrellas and occupying the free beach without any rights. It is really annoying and chaotic. Many people arrived, saw the situation and immediately left. It is a shame, because by law the space occupied by beach clubs should not be that big. If you do not want to pay for an umbrella and a sunbed and hope to relax in peace, it is not the ideal beach. Keep in mind that we were there in early July, so not in peak season either.
John D — Google review
I was there Oct 17, 2025 and it was 24 C sunny. The water was not calm on this day and waves were coming in 2 feet (just less than 1 metre) high. Not ideal for kids/babies. Beautiful beach with real sand! Decent amount of surfers there as well. There was tons of garage can, a shower and amenities. I had a great time there with my wife and no issues.
K — Google review
My wife and I almost didn't go here because of the misleading reviews. I believe that locals intentionally review this place as dirty to keep the tourists away. It was clean. Water was pristine. This has been our favourite beach in Sicily so far. Ignorantly bad reviews and Prego!
Jason J — Google review
There are parts where the water is clear but not all of it, also there is only a small part free for use, most of it are private bar/hotel beaches. I think a saw beach near this one, better hidden and i eould reccomend you to look for it
Ana — Google review
Fontane Bianche is a great and definitely worth visiting. We parked for free in one of the parkings, but unsure if it was indeed free or free due to low season as it was end of may. The only downside is that a great por of the beach is taken by Lidos, meaning a lot of paid areas, but a short walk can take you to a good spot at the sand. The water is crystal clear, and nature around is beautiful.

Ancient Ruins
Akrai Greek Theatre is an ancient site founded in 664 BC on the hill called Acremonte, with a rich history of dominations by various cultures. The archaeological site offers a quiet and atmospheric experience, with wonderful views and unspoiled history. The charming theatre is set high on a hill and features rock-cut early Christian burials. The rest of Palazzo Acreide is also worth exploring, making it an ideal half-day outing for history enthusiasts.
We chanced upon this bijoux amphitheatre while visiting the town of Palazzolo Acreide. I think there were only three other people there and one of them was a member of staff. It's not a big site but it's well laid out and all the signs are in Italian and English and give good descriptions of what the various parts of the site were used for. There was no trouble parking and the entrance fee (as of October 2024) was 5 euros a head - and you can stand on the stage and recite your favourite poetry! A little gem!
Joe S — Google review
While the site is quite far from the usual route of Sicilian tours, I think it’s definitely worth a visit. The theatre is smaller than the ones in Syracuse or Taormina, but it’s very well preserved and completely surrounded by nature. A stroll through the archaeological park also takes you past ruins of the city’s decumanus and a necropolis. It’s a really enjoyable experience.
Andrea O — Google review
The theatre is charming. Great setting high on a hill, and quite small. As well as this, check out all the rock cut early christian burials. Fascinating. The rest of palazzo acreide is well worth a look too. A great half day out.

No crowds, a short but steep walk from town and you're blessed with wonderful views and unspoilt history in a very well maintained site. Well worth a visit. An ideal pre lunch stroll before eating at one of the excellent restaurants in town.

Small well preserved Greek theater. Park close or walk up a steep hill the price of 2.50 euro is a steal.
Lynne P — Google review
Like most sicilian archaeological sites its only half open I assume due to covid. Still full price though. It is worth a visit as s quiet and atmospheric. Park outside the gates or feel the wrath of the staff. Nice dog that follows you round the site too.

We made a side trip during our bicycle tour to visit. Google says it is open until 19:30 but the lady told us 1 hour when we arrived at around 4pm. Entrance fee was 5 euro. I wish there was a better map and information to explore the site.

Caprice is definitely a fantastic spot, particularly renowned for its delectable granita. The service provided by the staff, especially Chiara who deserves special mention, was impeccable. The establishment itself was exceptionally neat and tidy. It is unquestionably a place worth revisiting. Their menu offers mouthwatering dishes coupled with amiable service from the employees. Moreover, they provide an extensive array of delectable desserts that are constantly changing.
Loved the vibe here! The staff was incredibly kind and helpful. Despite not speaking Italian, we felt right at home. I ordered a cassatina and a warm glass of milk. They were a bit surprised that I wanted just plain milk, but they still served it with a smile and even brought some honey on the side. We’re so glad we decided to stop by!"

Il tiramisù era delizioso! Me and my girlfriend went here in the evening to get some late night Sicilian/Italian specialties before going home. We tried to order in English but their English was as good as my Italian, so with a few words of Italian from us, and a few words of English from them did we get through! It felt like they cared about us as humans and not just customers! Also, for anyone who haven't translated or knows Italian - the tiramisù was really really good!

The architecture and artwork within the basilica are truly magnificent, making it a must-see attraction for visitors to the area. Despite the hot weather, attending a wedding at this beautiful location was an unforgettable experience. I attended a June 2019 wedding here and it was beautiful despite how Incredibly hot it was. I felt sorry for the bridal party especially the bride wearing a long veil but other than that…magnificent! There are lots of good restaurants around to grab a refreshing drink or ice cream.

Euryalus Fortress

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Castles
Stone remains of an extensive fortress built ca 400 BCE to defend the ancient Greek city.
Fantastic Hellenistic fortress, unique in its extensiveness, and its innovation at the time of construction. Some of the fortifications and clever tunnels were perhaps? even designed by Archimedes himself? It was built to protect the western entry point to the Epipolae plateau. Wandering around the tunnel and ditch complex is magical - more people should visit here. Only open twice per week currently (wednesday mornings and Saturday afternoons).
Hannah S — Google review
As at 1 Feb 2025 the place was closed. Google wrongfully says open on Saturdays from 14:30. It looks like a fascinating place and a shame it can't be explored.
Steve S — Google review
It was built to protect the western entry point to the Epipolae plateau. Wandering around the tunnel and ditch complex is magical - more people should visit here. The structure, with its thick walls, deep moats, and watchtowers, is an example of how the ancient Greeks were able to combine art and science in the design of their fortifications. Even though much of the castle is in ruins today, it is still possible to appreciate the complexity and ingenuity of its design.the castle is surrounded by lush nature, making the visit even more enjoyable. It is the ideal place for a relaxing walk or an outdoor picnic. Must visit site although it is outside of the city of Syrakus. It is a pity and a shame since the place is a very interesting historical place and the galleries are beautiful. There are no shelters from the sun or from possible rain. Several pedestrian paths, with ups and downs, many stairs and underground tunnels. It was necessary to pass three doors to enter the castle, secret internal and underground tunnels for sorties and to take any attackers by surprise.

Saline Nature Reserve Priolo

Nature & Parks
Saline Nature Reserve Priolo, located near Siracusa, is a small but beautiful oasis where nature stands its ground amidst industrial progression. The path leading to cabin 4 is adorned with arched shrubs and trees, creating a sense of anticipation. Visitors can observe flamingos and other birds in this calm park by the sea from February through August. The reserve offers an interesting opportunity for birdwatching during spring, with free entrance and helpful guides available.
Really nice place for a walk in some nature. Just that - a walk, not a hike. You might see flamingoes from the observation station. No bathroom here though.

Very interesting place but unfortunately it's summer so it's a bit thirsty. There was only ducks in the lake.
Mario G — Google review
Flamingos between factories. A small but beautiful oasis which is standing its natural ground, arguably challenging the focus of humans on the 'need' for industrial progression. The path with arched shrubs and trees leading to cabin 4 raises a sense of expectation. The sun caused butterflies to dance between the flowers and salamanders to seek out warm places. Arriving at the wooden walkway to cabin 4 met my expectations in abundance: plenty of viewing port to see a variety of waterbirds, including flamingos. A place of peace and natural beauty - hopefully it will help us think and work to get the balance between nature and industry right.
