Laufás Museum and heritage site with its turf houses is a unique and interesting place to visit. From the outside the houses appear to be individual and small. However, most are interconnected inside and have multiple rooms and even an upstairs! You can climb up into the loft of the church. I say climb as the steps are very shallow in depth. We recommend visiting. We were on a tour through our cruise line. We did not feel rushed at this stop.

A highlight of our two days in Akuyeri! Firstly, the drive here was stunning, right on the coastline with breathtaking views. The museum and heritage site was beautifully maintained and so so informative. Going through the maze of the house was mind-blowing, each room was a new discovery full of artifacts and nonstop history. We enjoyed it greatly and highly recommend. On the way back to Akuyeri we stopped on the side of the road to visit some Icelandic horses. Beautiful scenery.

The highlight of the day! Totally worth the drive to get here and learn a bit more about Icelandic history and the traditional way of life. A must-stop if you’re exploring the area.

Ab interesting slice of Icelandic history that dates back to the mid 11th century. This current site appears to have been rebuilt around the 19th century and it was interesting to walk through the in ground home which is much larger than you would think

Worth the detour. Had full access to everything. So cool to walk inside the sod houses and the church. Great historical information. Wonderful people in the shop. Coffee and tea are part of the admission.

Gorgeous views, cool history, helpful and kind staff! We had a coffee in the shop and the lady behind the counter taught us about the crystallized sugar. She said sometimes they will place the sugar in their mouth and drink the coffee through it, I tried it and it was fun. Cute dog in the area as well

The garden is small but lovely, an unexpected gem just above the town. You can walk here, but it’s all uphill from the town or cruise port, so jump on the free public bus which does the rounds every 25 minutes or so, see the gardens, then walk back down past the church. As a bonus the garden has a lovely cafe in an architecturally designed building which does decent coffee and cakes.

The gardens, for this time of year, were still beautiful. I would love to come back someday to see it during peek times. We walked through in about an hour. There is a shop that had coffee and some bakery items. We didn't eat there because we had just finished eating sandwiches. If you enjoy flowers, and are curious about the names of some of the plants you have seen along your journey, take a stroll. You won't be disappointed!

Beautiful and calm place. Nice flowers, and trees everywhere. It has the information for everything around. The paths are easy to walk, charming nature and it has a caffe very cozy inside too. The parking is easy access right at front. Lovely place.

Beautiful garden with pathways. Very peaceful. It's free. There's a Cafe to purchase coffee or Alcohol. Definitely bring your camera. The floral smells are so refreshing!

This is a must do if you are in town and it’s the summer months. The range of flowers were just amazing. I saw flora I have never seen before in my entire life. The grounds were great and really well maintained. The cafe at the garden was beautiful and quaint. It was a hike uphill to get here from the cruise port so we opted to take a taxi, which was very easy to do from the port and to return to the port. Just get the cab’s business card so you can contact them when you’re done (WhatsApp is usually best). My husband and I were with my three year old and they both enjoyed the gardens. I’m so glad we decided to come here. It was a highlight of the trip!

My visit to Akureyri Botanical Garden in late June was perfectly timed as flowers were just starting to unfurl their beauty. It’s an incredibly peaceful place, ideal for an hour of quiet exploration among the varied plant species. I found myself constantly discovering new favorites around every bend. The presence of an interesting cafe right inside adds a unique touch, perfect for a refreshing break. This garden provides a serene escape, offering both natural beauty and a relaxing environment. A truly delightful and calming experience!

Beautiful little Botanical gardens in the middle of the city. Easy to get to a great place to bring the kids and family. Nice cafe right there. If the weather is nice. Definitely trying to make this a stop. And it's free!

Beautiful church right in the middle of this town. We couldn't go inside as it was closed in off peak hours. The entire place was really beautiful. The view of the city from the church compound was very pretty.

Worth a visit. Beautiful modern church that overlooks the town and the water. Some interesting stained glass and an amazing organ. Was designed by the same architect from Hallgrímskirkja in Reykavik.

We have visited Akureyri twice now, and an iconic sight visible from all along the waterfront is the Akureyri new modern church. We were unable to get to it to enter either visit, but enjoyed the architecture from the outside. I believe the two front spires are mostly decorative, but this makes it reminiscent of a European medieval catholic cathedral in style..

Beautiful church. Honestly, this was one of my favorite spots while visiting Akureyri. Each stained glass window alternated pictorial depictions of the gospel and of Icelandic Christian history and heritage. It was moving and awe inspiring. It was such a beautiful display of local and national culture, and intricately displayed the intrinsic connection between Iceland’s national heritage with Christianity

Cycling around Iceland I arrived late into Akureyri. Managed to catch the last bit of the headline’s act - a famous Icelandic singer / story teller. Even though I don’t speak it, it was great to see the interaction between him and the crowd - I think I even managed to understand one. He also told/sang some in English - I think to cater to the growing groups of visiting foreigners. It was ISK 1500 to go in but chatting to the door guy he was kind enough to let me in no charge as it was so close to finishing. Supported the venue by getting a refreshing (and strong!) pint of Boli.

Came across this cosy club with great atmosphere, music and wonderful bar. It was the highlight of our visit here

My father and I saw Mugison here, and the venue was fantastic! It was a great, cozy set up with little round tables. The drinks were good, and reasonably well priced for Icelandic standards. I would definitely see another show here, we had an awesome time!

Great little wine bar in the city! Intimate vibes and good selection of wines. Our server was attentive and kind. Highlights: - great selection of wines - gorgeous interior - nice bathroom - great dessert!!! Notes: - wanted more “small bites” options to snack and drink - we got the tasting menu to share and the bread with oil—both were “ok”. definitely recommend the drinks but the food was only alright.

Luckily, the hotel restaurant was closed on Sunday, so I was able to try this bistro... Exceptional food, and a bonus for having Guinness... The guy who served me was very kind, helpful, and patient, given my Caracas-style English... Overall, I paid a fair price compared to hotel restaurants that rip you off. Go there! Intimate candlelit atmosphere and soft music... Truly an excellent restaurant!!!

The duck burger was one of my favorite dishes in Iceland. The seafood soup had an excellent dill flavor and went well with the cheese platter. Just be aware that the dishes are seasonal so some things you see on the reviews won’t be there. I liked their option to do the tasting series or order individual entrees and small plates. There was a language barrier mix up with the waiter but the staff was very courteous and remedied the situation. Overall great experience.

Absolutely fantastic little place. Food ranks up to any standard and the service was excellent. Get the menu deal to enjoy everything to the fullest, my favourite was the charred salmon! Hopefully will return to Akureyri one day to try it again!

After more than 30 minutes wait, the Salmon is finally served. It tastes very nice and fresh, maybe it was fresh caught 🤷‍♂️ otherwise how do you explain the long wait? Price is highest out of my Iceland dinners.

Nice building just across the City Parking lot. You can pick up maps, buy souvenirs (very pricey), and use the facilities (located in the basement) free of charge. The interior and exterior are beautifully designed to represent Icelandic landscapes.

A beautiful place that hosts the city’s cultural events including concerts and social gatherings. There’s a tourist information center that provides free information. There is a quality arts and crafts store located within the info center. Off to the side, there’s a mini art gallery from local artists. If you’re hungry and want a break, there’s a cafe on the other side of the info center. The building inside is stunning with wood incorporated to the modern design. It also has toilets which is useful.

Visiting Iceland on the ring road. Stay in town for one night. Beautiful city to take a walk. Off season so not crowded. Lots parking right next to the center.

One of the top museums I have been to, on the level of moco and rembrand, totally recommend it, i have no words, I cried during the visit, there is a huge variety of of themes and its super inspiring

The Icelandic Folk & Outsider Art museum is located in North Iceland, near Svalbarðsheiði, about a 10 minute drive eastwards from Akureyri ... on the opposite side of the fjord. This museum is a real gem and houses various separate galleries with exhibits. 👍😍👍 Each year there is a new set of exhibitions in the museum featuring truly unique and creative collections from Icelandic artists. 👍😊👍😊👍 You will also find a variety of books available for leisure reading as well as a separate gallery with a doll collection with many dolls in national costumes from around the world. Definitely a must visit place when you are in the vicinity of Akureyri. 👍😍👍

Visited to escape snow and gales with low expectations but it was delightful. Interesting and quirky exhibits. Pleasant staff and free coffee. Excellent and highly recommend. Loved the designer perfume bottles.

Very cool, random, unexpected museum of art! What a wonderful find! This museum has a really interesting and varied group of works from native Icelandic artists, plus a weirdly cool doll collection. I was so pleased that our random decision to pull off the road on the way back to Akureyri paid off so amazingly. Definitely worth the time and money!

The museum was fun and interesting and the staff was great. I definitely recommend checking out this museum if you are in Akureyri. Also, the food in their restaurant is really, really tasty - possibly the best food we had in Iceland when visiting.

The restaurant in the museum is apparently amongst the cheapest in Iceland. 1800ICR for a main course (lamb or fish) + refillable soup + refillable salad + refillable coffee. The museum itself is interesting, but small and may easily be avoided as Its 1500ICR per adult. Helpful chap at the counter. Also met the retured pilot/owner who owns the museum . Interesting chap!!

Quirky privately owned museum with well done displays and an extraordinarily amount of bird taxidermy from a private collection. Be sure to chat up the proprietor. He will entertain you with artic lore, jokes and shaggy dog stories. The icelandic home cooking restaurant which is located in the same building served the best meal that I had in Iceland.

Small exhibition about arctic circle, the problem is most of information is written in Icelandic, English explanation is either missing or difficult to read.

WOW an impressive collection, reeking of classics, speed and beauty.

Nice collection of motorcycles, some vintage, some fairly recent. Well maintained with nice details, e.g. the bikes that were known to leak oil actually did leak in the museum as well. 1500 isk entry.

What an incredible surprise to find this here in Iceland. A very nice collection of old and new bikes run by some really cool guys.

Pretty impressive collections. You can find there different things connected with flying: from flight suits, stories and plane models through salvaged weapons or radio equipments up to full machines from different times and sizes parked inside. Everything is located inside a hangar. Plane enjoyers definitely need to see this place. Price can be a little high, but on first day of icelandic summer entrance is free.

Amazing aviation museum. It has static displays plus working aircraft. They have an old 747 flight deck where you can go in and touch everything (which is so rare). If you like aviation you will love this place.

Excellent museum filled with the history of Icelandic aviation! The gentleman at the front desk was very nice and friendly and had hot coffee on arrival!

An absolute must visit for all aviation enthusiasts! Good variety of display and they have a retired Boeing 747 cockpit as well! Might even be able to catch an aircraft landing if you’re lucky!

The owner is one of the nicest people I have ever met! I was visiting from the states and made the drive from Reykjavik to visit this place. They have an amazing car collection with one of 3 Dixie Flyers left in existence and one of two DMC DeLoreans in Iceland. Highlight of the visit was hearing from the owner about the restoration process for their vehicles and all the stories behind the cars. Was the highlight of my entire trip to Iceland.

Must stop! This was an amazing collection, beautifully kept and many unusual items. One was a Dixie Flyer - one of 3 in the world- tractors and a Tucker snow cat. There is a little play area for kiddos and a spotless WC. The owner is welcoming & we could have stayed all day!

Fantastic place!!! Being a car engineer I was impressed but I believe it is very interesting for everyone who likes cars, vehicles a bit. It is a private collection with 2 big rooms of completely restored old or oldish cars and machines and there are at least 50 of others outside waiting for some workshop hours in order to get back in shape. Absolutely recommended place!!!

Fantastic collection of older cars, trucks, tractors, and unique vehicles. An interesting mix of makes and models mostly from Europe and North America. Owner was very nice and helpful, even helping to inflate a tire on my motorbike.

Great museum. But check the opening hours before you go there - they are open just few hours a day. Lot of cars and also great collections of small things from the past. My grandma used to have some of them at home :) The owner was very nice and friendly. I loved the red mustang and also original Jukebox, where you can play a song!

What an amazing eclectic selection of vehicles and memorabilia. The diversity is amazing cars from every era. Impossible to really see it all as in every space there is something interesting. There are also some vintage tractors in various stages of restoration. Highly recommended

A bit out of the way but worth the visit. A family farm/ property that I highly recommend visiting if you are a car person. We talked with the owner for quite a while. Some random weird cars as well as snowmobiles, bicycles , etc.....you name it. Then go out back, lots of old defenders and American junk rotting away. I love this place and had a great time here.

We enjoyed our stop at this waterfalls, even though it was a cloudy rainy day. It felt much less commercialized than the waterfalls on the south of the island. There is plenty of free parking, and the walking paths give you great views of the fall. Right along the Ring Road, so a easy stop while driving through the north of Iceland. Definitely worth spending a few minutes here.

Amazing beautiful waterfall on the ring road close to Akureyri. The trail is well mark, you can go down close the waterfall also if you have the skills. The parking is very convenient and close, it has two, one on each side. You can see the waterfall front different angles. Also it has a suoveniers store with bathrooms and nice coffee so you can get nice presents there and the staff is very friendly.

Visited mid-September and was pleasantly surprised that it was not too busy. This waterfall lived by its expectations as it was majestic when enjoyed from several vantage points. Initially you will observe it from a higher vantage point appreciating the underlying canyon as you walk from the car park then you can take the stairs down and visit at water level where you can take great photos with even less crowds. IMO its advisable to use the East bank parking.

Free parking for a magnificent waterfall. Park on the west side (for the best views) and then there is a short walk from the parking area. There are viewing platforms and there’s a staircase to get closer to the waterfall. A souvenir shop and a paid WC (200kr) is located near the west parking lot.

Beautiful, not a sunny day but still an amazing sight of the power of water! Would love to see the flow from a melting of snow in the spring.

Pretty crowded parking lot and area for tourists, but was still worth a quick visit. Nicely paved and easy to walk along, just gets a bit crowded. Grab a quick photo and move on to other attractions.

First place in Iceland that felt like home. Friendly staff, Labros hmu if you want a pen pal in CA, great facilities, on par with the orderly clean and well cared for standards of Icelandic bathing. Really clean swimming pool. Though it only have basic swimming facilities, it has a hot tub and is really clean. Cheaper than other swimming pool as well at 650isk

Good price. Good swimming pool. We visited this swimming pool during our trip around Iceland. It has some hot tubs, one cold bath and a bigger pool. Clean changing room and shower. Hairdryer also available.

Warm pool and hot lagoons, jacuzzi, sauna and a pot with cold water. Card for ten visits, 4200 ISK or 35€. Worth trying it.

Quite nice but not big museum with many scheletons of whales and some interesting notices to read, a nice film but unfortunately it plays just every hour and last show is at 4pm...it can be a bit more interactive specially for children but it is a good experience indeed.

Cool to see skeletons of a handful of whales but not very contemporary and overall kind of boring. 30 minute stop. No elevator and not handicap accessible to get to the second floor as a result. Better things to do or see the one in Reykjavik.

terrific work, we learn a lot, and not only about whales but about our planet and its evolution. highly recommended even if there's a lot to read. it s easy to stay there at least 1.5 hour.

Very nice museum to visit. Maybe if you have a little time to spend im Husavík or if the weather is not on your side. Unfortunately we had no luck seeing the gentle giants in the ocean, but still learnt a lot about them at the museum. Also great gift shop!

This Husavik Whale Museum is a true gem in this charming Icelandic town! Although the museum isn’t large, it’s incredibly well-organized and thoroughly covers the fascinating topic of whales and their lives. The exhibition is beautifully prepared and presents the lives of these majestic animals in an extremely engaging way. The museum excellently showcases both the beauty of whales and the serious threats they face. Particularly moving are the sections about whaling and its impact on these magnificent marine mammals. While it’s sad to note that despite receiving licenses, the Icelandic company was the only one to withdraw from this practice mid-year, while Norwegian and Japanese whaling continues. The museum staff deserves special praise - they are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, and what’s more, you can communicate in Polish! This is a huge convenience for Polish tourists. My only small suggestion would be adding whale sounds in the background, which would further enrich the experience, but the atmosphere was very pleasant nonetheless. The wonderful souvenir shop offers beautiful and unique whale-related products. It’s the perfect place to buy special gifts or mementos from your visit. Husavik is known as Iceland’s “whale capital,” and the waters around the town are among the best places in the world to observe these animals. The museum perfectly prepares visitors for whale watching cruises by providing knowledge about local species. The entrance ticket costs around 200 ISK for adults (about 66 PLN), which is very reasonable for such a rich educational experience. Built in the Nordic style, reportedly one of the most beautiful churches in Iceland. Having previously toured much of outer Iceland, I can agree that this is the nicest I have seen, even better in my mind than Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik, which while large and majestic, is a bit nouveau. I did not have an opportunity to enter this church so cant comment on the interior.

Iconic and vibrant in the overall backdrop of the harbor and town. Easy to see from whale watching tour destinations and provides a good vantage point of the boats and docks. We only walked by and didn't enter the church.

It's a great small museum to show off the town's history and traditions. It's also a publcil library but I doubt that would be of much use to tourists. I enjoyed my time there so highly recommend.

The time was very well spent, we got to know the ships, the devices for their production, and the devices for domestic use.

Small but perfectly formed. A lovely combination of human history and natural history. A surprising number of signs are bilingual so we were able to understand the exhibits better.

Really nice museum! Great staff too. They turned on all of the lights and opened all the exhibits special for us. We were the only ones in there. Covid 19 has really slowed down the museum but it was refreshing that we weren't turned away. I especially liked the boat exhibits. They have 4 or 5 inside. They also have a large amount of old propulsion motors as well. A variety of old navigation electronics, old net gear, seal harpoons, and I could go on and on. Just a wonderful place for any old commercial fishermen to see. And any person interested in history for that matter. I don't give 5 stars often, but this was fun for the whole family. We were able to keep our 5 month old entertained the entire time. Thanks again

Very nice and clean place with the perfect location to explore the Myvatn area! The bedroom is very modern and the kitchen perfect to prepare your dinner ! Also the owners were very nice! Will definitely recommend to stay there. You have also free entrance to the swimming pool a few meters away from the guesthouse

One of our best accommodations while we visited Iceland. Everything is super clean and in an impeccable state. The host is very friendly and cooks a mean breakfast ;-)

The river crossings were exciting, and especially the place where the LAVA burned for 6 months in 2014/2015... He said that the fresh lava there is sharp as ground glass: we thought so too when we felt it. All in all a great day with Kristinn, we would never have been able to experience all this with a tourist bus! De rivierdoorsteken waren opwindend, en vooral ook de plek waar in 2014/ 2015 de LAVA 6 maanden lang brandde... Hij vertelde dat die verse lava daar scherp is als gemalen glas: dat vonden wij ook, toen we eraan voelden. This is a natural attraction near the southwest shores of Lake Myvatn that you can access from the Visitor Centre carpark. What you find is a field of pseudo craters were formed during the volcanic eruptions of Lúdentaborgir and Þrengslaborgir around 2,300 years ago. You will find trail information at the main trailhead. There are several trails of various lengths that pass through the pseudo crater field. You can walk up several of them and look inside, not a lot to see of the pseudo craters compared to nearby crater called Hverfjall and the craters tend to look more definitive from a distance compared to up close but the grounds are still fairly interesting geologically. There is quality birdlife in this area as well if you have interest and a set of binoculars.

Free parking near the entrance to this beautiful place. The short round-trip is less than 1,5 km and the views are incredible. Some shops, public toilets and refreshments nearby.

This was our first stop in our itinerary around Lake Mývatn. Free close parking in front of the visitor centre. Multiple trails exists, we've taken the shorter trail which takes you around the closest pseudo craters in a loop with nice vistas over the imminent lake and Hverir geothermal far in the background. Allocate between 30mins to 1 hours depending on your pace. It's nice but not overly impressive thus if pressed in time, drop this definitely in favor of Dimmuborgir and Hverfjall.

Lovely place to walk around and enjoy the views. A few bugs still in early September, but manageable.

Nice little stop on your way somewhere. The shortest walk is 1.5km called SK1. Parking and entrance are free. Beautiful view of the lake and cool to walk inside and around the pseudo craters. The view of the snowy peaks far away is also very beautiful. Can get windy.

Museum consists of looking at all the birds species that can be found in Iceland with some placards about their location and time of year that they are here. You purchase a ticket and then walk into to explore the birds. It seemed popular but not overcrowded right when it opened at noon. There are many birds to watch afterwards if you choose to get a drink and sit on their back patio by the lake. Staff were very friendly.

Not the worst museum I’ve been to in Iceland, but not the best either. The bird museum is just one room, where there are a few display cases of stuffed birds and bird eggs. The specimens are stuffed well and look good. However, the entry fee is very steep and didn’t really match the amount of content. I believe it was the most expensive museum we visited in the country. After we were done with the bird museum we were directed to another exhibit, which was about boating in Iceland, also one room, and even smaller than the bird exhibit. Didn’t really add anything of value to the experience.

My husband and I visited in September 2017. It was a fantastic experience that gave us a whole new (let's be honest, completely new) appreciation for birds. We planned to stop just for a few minutes, but ended up staying well over an hour. The displays are beautifully curated, and it's easy to imagine the avians in their habitat. The building is spectacular and tranquil, too. We were greeted by a very friendly woman who helped us feel so welcome and was happy to answer any question with enthusiasm.

My girlfriend is a bird enthusiasist, so this was a must visit place. The bird collection is awesome, we even got a list of the birds with names in our language (czech), which was really useful. If you love birds, you have to visit this place. If youre like me and just like animals, i would still recommend this place. ... There was even a wild duck sitting in a small pond in front of the museum, that was a nice touch. Oh, and the building itself is beautiful. We were hungry, so got some food and that was ok, nothing special, but it satisfied our hunger.

A lovely little museum with over 200 birds on display and 300 bird eggs too. They are beautifully preserved and displayed, with the right amount of information about where they live and when they are in Iceland. The birds all have a connection to Iceland and were collected by Sigurgeir himself.

A fairly comprehensive collection of the birds living at the Myvatn during the warm part of the year. You will see eggs, stuffed birds, nests and more at the museum. I guess this is a private museum, still well worth seeing, since you will probably see birds that are familiar and also some that are quite exotic.

Bird lovers will love this place. Privately owned by a family.

This is a volcanic lake formed after eruption around 2300 years ago that is located on the Ring Road between Aukureyri and Egilsstaðir in the north of Iceland. The lake itself is beautiful and there are quite a few natural attractions related to past volcanic activity that you can seen and explored in the area. It is worth a visit to the Lake Myvatn Visitor Centre on the southwest end of the lake. You will find a small village called Reykjahlíð on the northeast corner where there is a supermarket, Vinbudin bottle shop, local handcraft gift shop, Fish & Chip restaurant as well as camping sites and a few accommodations for those interested in staying around the lake while travelling in the north of Iceland.

A serene and beautiful area with lots of attractions nearby to explore. The lake itself is very pretty and a memorable landmark in Iceland. The formation and shapes feel very prehistoric since there's lot of little islands and coves along the edges of the lake. The alien looking craters and volcanoes add to the spirit of this beautiful and interesting area.

One of the most interesting, nicest and attraction rich places we have visited in Iceland. I was already wary that I had allocated just one day here even before our actual visit and this was definitely the case. Incredible and best vistas of the lake can be enjoyed from Hverfjall volcano, Dimmuborgir lava fields and Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters!

This beauty is a view from lake . We were lucky to see a rainbow there. The lake was semi frozen but we could see the volcanic mountains very clearly. You just want to keep roaming around this place , it is so so beautiful. The cold breeze makes it a little difficult though but you will love things around here.

Dimmuborgir is a must-visit in Iceland! This otherworldly lava field is a geological marvel, with massive, dried lava formations creating bizarre, hill-like shapes. The resemblance to trolls in some formations is both fun and slightly eerie! The well-maintained walking paths make it easy to explore the entire area, leading you through archways and to various viewpoints. For those who prefer a less strenuous experience, the scenic views of the surrounding landscape are stunning even from the parking area. It’s a unique and fascinating spot that truly feels like stepping into another world.

Really easy walk! Theres a proper pathway and various different paths to take depending on how much time you want to spend there. Really cool how the lava pillars formed! Loved the info about the Yule Lads/Iceland Santa Klaus too!

This was one of the most interesting places we have visited. These lava fields offer interesting large scale formations with trials of diverse length. Unluckily we had to take one of the shortest trials as we had several other places to visit around Lake Mývatn. Allocate at least one hour, more if you have the time as its worth it. You can read interesting facts on how these were formed and myths and legends surrounding the Trolls that once dwelled here.

Super for probably all day walking around. We spent maybe 2 hours there, excellent views. Unfortunately we didn't see yulelads :( Free parking at the entrance. There is also a coffeshop with souvenirs, unfortunately opened only from 10 to 15. We arrived later

Don’t skip this one! Many cool lava formations with arches and caves you can explore. Budget about 2 hours to walk through one of the trails. It’s fairly flat

A fascinating lava field filled with dramatic rock formations and hidden paths, creating a mystical, otherworldly atmosphere. Perfect for a peaceful walk and stunning photos.

This is a neat area to visit just to the east of Lake Myvatn. The lava fields at Dimmuborgir are dramatic and cover a large scale area formed after volcanic eruptions around 2300 years ago. Visitors can get up close to these dramatic lava formations by way of a handful of designated and colour coded trails you can follow through the lava fields. There is a fair sized (free) carpark at Dimmuborgir. You'll find toilets (200kr per use), a cafe and gift shop as well. The trailheads start from the carpark. They are well marked and easy to follow. The walks are mostly float but at times you have to navigate through up close lava formations. You'll see small caves, windows through the lava formations, craggy pillars and bridges all formed by lava cooling and solidifications. Such a neat place to visit if you want to see massive and dramatic lava structures up close.

The cave is very small, and during peak hours you might have to wait in line to get in. The entrance is not developed or marked properly. Overall, it’s a nice spot, but nothing extraordinary. If you’re short on time, it’s something you can easily skip.

It's a beautiful one to do a quick pit stop . It has parking and the path to the cave is rocky so wear good shoes and also on a 10 meter walk up the cave where you can see earth separation after an earthquake

Nice quick 15mins stop as part of our itinerary around Lake Mývatn between visiting Hverfjall volcano towards Hverir geothermal. Free parking with enough spaces during our mid-September visit. Cave is small so you need to allow other visitors to exit but its worth the visit. The spectacular blue hue of the water is not to be missed if you're in the area and in particular if you're a GoT fan.

If you're already in the area and you have extra time, this is an interesting place to visit. I wouldn't make a special trip for it though since it's small and you may have to wait to see inside. We went in the evening last month and it wasn't too crowded. I can see why Game of Thrones was filmed here though. The geology is fascinating.

A lot of people come here because of the Game of Thrones series. I haven’t seen the show myself, and still found the place absolutely spectacular. We went early in the morning and had the entire area to ourselves. At night, we returned to the parking lot to watch the northern lights, and it was a great decision—there’s no light pollution at all, making it a perfect spot for aurora viewing.

The cave was really really dark and you can climb in from one end only. Very short climb and it was really dark so you’ll have to use your phone light while grabbing on to the rocks so you dont fall. The water inside was really clear but its a small space so theres not much to do inside other than to climb in and out. The area above the cave was a lot more impressive!

I was expecting a little more but this was pretty interesting. If you are passing by, it's worth a stop. Only takes 10 minutes or so. The cave and water are very scenic. You can also hike up on top where you can see where the earthquake created the huge crack in the ground.

You can only visit with one tour company but it's a brilliant experience! You'll get a wet bum and hands from crawling and sliding over ice as you make your way deep into the cave, but spectacular natural shapes await you... I won't say any more, go see for yourself!

Unable to reach cave without going through the one particular expensive tour company. There are other caves in the area that you may access that are cooler and do not require a guide and price.
