Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Aydon Castle, located just a mile from Corbridge in Northumberland, is a well-preserved 13th-century manor house with a rich history. From being seized by English rebels to being occupied by the Scots and later becoming a farmhouse, the castle has witnessed various events over the centuries. Surrounded by beautiful woodland, this fortified manor house offers visitors an opportunity to explore its nearly unchanged structure that has stood for over 900 years.
Great castle to check out with it's history going back to the 1200's from what I understand. There was ample parking with a £3 fee or free for members. Short walk to the castle itself, the shop is where you show your tickets if you have purchased them online or you can buy the from there. Spent about 30-40 minutes here. There are outdoor areas including a collection of apple trees where you are encouraged to take one home which was nice. Well worth the visit for the reasonably small costs of the ticket.

Very disappointed in this site, expected more. The journey we had was not the best, terrible road called the military road, a single track. We travelled from Ashington in Northumberland, 57 minutes, took no more than 30 minutes to visit the site.
John S — Google review
Ayden is a restored castle owned by English Heritage. Hugh De Reymes around 1293 began with a hall, then built a fort; good job as he and his son..had a turbulent history with war with the Scottish. One of the best orthentic castles I've been to, very detailed. Good for families & picnic tables. There is a dress up box in the castle. Ayden castle is about a mile down a lane off road( bumpy). The care park 200yds from the entrance, non members have to pay. There is a disabled parking outside entrance. Overall, wheelchair friendly. A couple of entrances has a couple of steps. There is s shop. Had a very relaxing couple of hours.

A hidden gem ... We reached Aydon Castle after a few minutes on a very small and narrow road (so be prepared) but it was worth it. The castle has a green courtyard with lots of grass for kids to play and on the side is a lovely orchard (great for picnics). There are some dotted picnic tables around too. Interesting visit inside the castle ... My kids really enjoyed it. Visit finished with ice creams from the English Heritage shop. ❤️ ps. There is an entry fee but we used our EH ticket so free.

A little castle in the beautiful countryside. Small entrance / gift shop with a very informative and helpful staff member. There are plenty of information boards inside and layouts of the rooms. We spent 30-40 minutes here. Free parking for english heritage members, small charge otherwise.

Beautiful castle! Very unexpected indeed! Upon entering, it looked to be quite underwhelming and small but actually, unlike many of the other castles we've visited, the floors have been restored and so when exploring it actually feels like you're stepping back in time and seeing the castle in its once before glory! Staff were beyond friendly & helpful, informative and welcoming. This is probably one of my favourite castles with lovely grounds for children to run around in and benches for resting and plenty of picnic places with a beautiful forestry walk going around the back of the castle. Very reasonably priced too, for what's on offer to see. 10/10 - would highly recommend!

Really enjoyed this 13th century English manor house. It was a working farm up until a year or so ago, or a few yrs (can't remember what they told us). There are quite a few things to see here. There is a small orchard, and a trail that goes around the manor house. There might have been some longer trails too, but don't remember as we stayed to tour. What we enjoyed ourselves was trying to figure out what rooms were used for, the most interesting one being what ended up being the stalls (which I totally called since it was 'indoors' we didn't think it could be that). Another thing that you typically do not see in ruins (though this place is well preserved) is an area in which the floor beams are intact and you can actually see what a 'typical' room height was - this place has it! Usually when ruins have multiple floors available, their more overlooking grand areas that either had higher ceilings, or the floor is missing over the area you're looking down in. Being to quite a few ruins now and knowing what you're looking at is spectacular. Don't necessarily wish to have been present during that time, but would love to see it back in its glory! The staff here are lovely and we quite enjoyed the gift shop. Coffee was eh, but at least it was a cuppa!
K E — Google review
Great for the afternoon if you're a member, otherwise think twice about visiting. Aydon Castle is listed as a outstanding surviving example of a 13th century English manor house.(not to sure about that) It was built by Robert de Raymes, a prosperous Ipswich merchant. Unfortunately, his arrival in the north coincided with the outbreak of fierce hostilities between England and Scotland and the castle was pillaged and burned by the Scots in 1315. By the time Robert died in 1323, the war had destroyed him financially. Access is down a single potty lane, and small car park.

Had a fantastic experience at Go Ape Matfen with my daughter! 13/07/2025 @ 14:00 From the moment we arrived, the instructors were friendly, welcoming, and professional, setting a great tone for the whole day. The session kicked off with a clear 30-minute safety briefing, followed by around 2.5 hours on the course itself – a perfect length to really enjoy the adventure without feeling rushed. The course is well-maintained and offers a good mix of challenges and fun. There were plenty of water stations along the way which were much appreciated, and free car parking on-site was a great bonus. They also offer a secure key storage system — you’re given a wristband with a number so you can easily retrieve your keys at the end. At one point, my daughter got a bit stuck on the Tarzan swing, but the staff were quick to respond and so reassuring, helping her get back on track and continue enjoying the experience with confidence. This place is well-organised, safe, and lots of fun — I’d absolutely recommend Go Ape Matfen to families looking for a bit of adventure in a beautiful woodland setting. We’ll definitely be back!

Axe throwing activity was just the best fun. Sarah, our instructor was so friendly, funny, and helpful. We did all 3 throws (right, left handed and two handed) and even managed to hit the board a few times. The games are fun and you can take photos of your achievements! Wear layers for the weather, we had a bit of light rain and needed coats, footwear - trainers/boots you don't mind getting a little muddy. Certificate and sticker awarded at the end if you don't want to get the medals package...we did, its got pride of place at home 😂
Deborah D — Google review
A great time for all ages! Our instructor Sarah was lovely. Even though it did start raining whilst we were on the course that didn't take away from the experience at all. All safety procedures were explained thoroughly and once you're on the course you can take it at your own pace! All in all a great day out.
Manvir — Google review
My son and I had a fantastic time at Go Ape Matfen yesterday! Our instructor, Grace was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. Thank you! I really liked that the course was split into sections, meaning that you were able to have your feet back on solid ground in between the challenging sections. This also meant longer zip wires!
Clare S — Google review
Had a great experience today and one of the staff who I think was called heather “Hev :)” wrote on the card was so patient with my partner and really helped her get through the first part. She regularly checked on us as we were so far behind everyone else.

Hall Hill Farm is an excellent family-friendly attraction that features a range of enjoyable activities for children. Donkey rides are also available for those looking for a more unique experience. The farm offers other exciting recreational opportunities such as sledging, crazy golf, sheep racing, bouncing on inflatable structures and soft play.
My husband adopted me a highland cow for my birthday, I even got to meet and feed her! Happy bunny. Animals are well looked after lots of different animals you can interact with. Very clean. Lots of hand cleaning stations. Restaurant was lovely and food was nice too. Kids play park, tractor rides and other activities going on all day
Emma M — Google review
TLDR: If you are in the area you should change your plans and go spend the day feeding and cuddling animals (It has a lot of well maintained areas for the kids to play as well) 😃 ................................. This place is amazing. I like feeding animals because it is very therapeutic. My husband comes with me 🙂 The place is not very big but it has a lot there. The space has been well thought out. There are a lot of play areas for the kids. There is a barrel ride - first time I have seen anything like that at one of these places. On the 'not seen it before' trail. I have never seen sheep racing. It is a short course and 2 x per day they race 4 difference sheep. So funny. Animal feeding - the layout is circular which makes it nice and easy. All animals were very friendly. They have 2 barns one has chicks in and the other has rabbits and guinea-pigs. You can go and sit in either barn and hold the animal for as long as you like. No queuing for a 2 minute hold and moving on. Never seen a set up like this before and think it's awesome. A great day spent recharging batteries by feeding and cuddling animals. Only negative is the cafe seemed a little over priced. They do have picnic tables if ya want to take ya own food though.
Lu A — Google review
We loved it here! The kids can hold guinea pigs and chicks as well as stroke rabbits, bottle feed lambs and hand feed sheep, goats and more. The play area is brilliant and the addition of tube slides, toboggans, jumping pillows, a climbing wall, water shoot out, ball gun fort, tractor ride and indoor soft play make this a great value day out. You can tell they've worked really hard to make this an attraction rather than 'just' a farm and as such it appeals to families much more. We went in the school summer holidays but it wasn't crowded and wait times were minimal. Well worth a visit.
Hayley T — Google review
Thus is not just a farm where children can learn about the different animals and feed them which is wonderful in itself. It has crazy golf, trampolines, barrel ride, bouncy pillows and an amazing slide. It's a wonderful place for a day out with the kids.
Casper D — Google review
Took our Newrly 2yr old Grandson. He loved it and tbf so did we. Its been at least 10yrs since we have been with our own kids. Loads to do and majority of things are free once you have paid you admission. Will definitely return.
Kelvin A — Google review
I’ve heard a lot about Hall Hill Farm over the decades but I've never been. Today I took my Grandson and I was blown away by it. The value for money, the sheer quantity of excellent things to do, the reasonable prices once inside, but most of all you have acquired the most wonderful staff. I can't recall ever been so well looked after outside of 5* hotels. They are so young, enthusiastic and amazing.
Graham M — Google review
What a brilliant place, the animals seem really well cared for. The staff were amazing, the food was good and fairly priced. We got to feed some highland cattle so my youngest daughter was over the moon. Will definitely be going again
Russ — Google review
Staff were lovely and friendly, and all the animals were amazing. There is plenty to do and lots of opportunities for interactions with the animals. Overall, it's a great day out.

It stands as a beacon along the coastline and features nature exhibits, a gift shop, and serves as the finish line for the North Tyneside 10k Road Race.
Such a cool place! Wait for the water to recede and then cross the causeway while checking out the rock pools. Nice lighthouse and some great views from the top. Plenty of seals on show too!
Arron H — Google review
Amazing place to visit. Was very blustery when we visited, but managed to see a few groups of seals resting up out of the water. Visiting the lighthouse is very interesting, and you can climb the steps up to the light itself for an amazing view over the coast. Such a lovely place!
Kevin P — Google review
It took me years to actually figure this out BUT there is a shed on the island, close to the lighthouse, where the RSPB kindly provide binoculars that lets you watch the seals. After years of literally walking past the open door to the shed it was an incredible surprise the first time I went in!!!!! Check the crossing times before you go. For fabulous walks on the cliffs with stunning views of St Mary's Lighthouse try the old Hartley Car Park. There is also a pub (Delaval Arms) which seems popular. Park nearby. Walk towards Tynemouth for gorgeous views from the cliffs. For people with children: at low tide St Mary s island s causeway is a fabulous place for rock pooling. The lovely gentleman who sells ice-cream & coffee always has a stock of clear buckets, spades and nets all reasonably priced.
Sophie T — Google review
Lots of parking (3 quid all day) areas then a walk to the lighthouse. Check tide times as path disappears under the sea! Lighthouse not always open, so check if going specially to climb it. Lots of steps spiraling up (no good if a fear of heights) then shallow steep steps to the top. Great views, little shop, hide to see birds\seals, lots of info and seals😍 Be careful walking on the rocks, hold kids hands, dogs allowed but not in the lighthouse. Path open around the lighthouse to explore the views, fab!
Ilona R — Google review
Really lovely place. Came here for a wedding where the tide comes in and keeps you 'stranded' for a few hours whilst the causeway is covered, it was a wonderful experience! The staff were very kind and helpful, and I've never seen so many seals basking on the rocks! There is also a great little museum.
Tobi M — Google review
Pretty cool experience to climb up the winding staircase and be greeted with a magnificent light at the top, paired with the unbeatable views. Easily worth the £6, if only to help them pay towards the internal repainting that’s in desperate need and will end up costing in the millions.
Marques — Google review
Beautiful place, nice to see the seals relaxing on the rocks and enjoying the sunshine. According to the nature preservation staff the seals only started to arrive in 2014. It was a great day out, got some great photos.
Michael B — Google review
Definitely worth a little walk around. Nice view from the top once you’ve climbed the pretty steep steps! Cool to see some seals chilling out on the surrounding rocks

Tynemouth Aquarium is a captivating destination that invites visitors to dive into the wonders of marine life. With its impressive display tanks featuring sharks, stingrays, and an array of colorful tropical fish, this aquarium offers an unforgettable experience for all ages. Daily seal shows and interactive feedings provide a closer look at these enchanting creatures, while the River Giants exhibit transports you to a lush tropical rainforest filled with giant fish.
Great aquarium on the coast. My 2 year old loved it! It's a decent size (not too big but plenty to look at), and you can go in and out during the day - we went around twice. We both loved the seal show and baby seals, and he was so excited about the sharks and rays and eels. The staff were super helpful, helping us look for the elusive eel he so desperately wanted to see!
Dawn R — Google review
There was a little wait to get your stamp to get in the price wasn't too bad. There was too many people when we were there we felt rushed around. At the seal show there was no point going as the small deck area was full, but you could sit on the grass in front of it but it was hard for me to see let alone a toddler, and the sound wasnt very good so we went to the small play area, stayed there for a bit and as we went to see more of the fishes the seal show ended, we sort of got ushered through the tunnel to the end. The good bit is that you could go through it all again which we did but it was boring so we left and went to the beach
Jaimie N — Google review
A great little marine-lover's excursion. They have a fantastic array of sea-life to observe, from a gorgeously inquisitive octopus, an immersive reef-tip shark tunnel, educational seal performances and beautiful sea horses and cute axolotl. You can spend a over an hour looking around and it is worth looking up the feeding times to really see the animals in action. The ticket is a little pricey, but the money does go towards care for the animals, and they have a seal hospital on site.
Georgie B — Google review
Great day out with my grandson. We both really enjoyed it and will no doubt be visiting again. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the animals.
Helleni T — Google review
A lovely family day out by the sea! The aquarium has a good variety of marine life, from seahorses and clownfish to seals and tortoises. The building itself is a little dated and not huge, but the location on the seafront makes up for it. Perfect for a couple of hours with children, and the views outside are fantastic! Our one year old thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
Mathurange K — Google review
Warm welcome when entering. Clear route to follow with a good selection of different fish and aquatic life to see. Lots of talks through the day which are informative. Car park next to the centre that has disabled bays and EV charging. It is a pay and display carpark - free for blue badge holders. Small play area outside for children on nice days. The only out door exhibit is the seal show, although you can see the seals underwater for an undercover area.
Iain W — Google review
Genuinely a lovely experience. Very well thought out nice touches with the passport stamp etc but main thing would be is it a little overpriced?! Must say we went for the yearly pass as we live near this however for people visiting it seemed a little expensive as it doesn’t really last longer than 1-2 hours! Side note would be to have more staff on the floor guiding and making the experience a little more interactive for the children. It’s essentially a walkthrough maze with some staff input depending on the time you visit (for talks etc).
L E — Google review
Its an aquarium and is an ok visit but woukd struggle to make it a full day out on its own. Can be quite expensive unless look for vouchers/discounts. It is quite run down and a lot of areas could do with some maintainence. The fish and displays all are clean and well kept.

Visitors can take leisurely walks along the beach, experiencing the ever-changing landscape influenced by the tides and time of day.
A nice sandy beach with lots of dogs. I love dogs so I do not mind. However, the sign says the dog should be on lead, which most people ignored and did not pick up dog poo. There were people surfing and a beach sauna in tents and dipping the sea in between.

Today me and Star had a lovely walk at Tynemouth Longsands North. She absolutely loved walking on the sand and taking a dip in the sea. Great weather with a cool breeze, but also walm.

Beautiful beach close to Clercoast metro station. It is a beautiful walk and dogs are allowed until the end of March. Definitely worth a stroll on a sunny day. It was quite windy but was still super pretty to walk on the beach. A must visit when in the area.

Beautiful beach. It was super clean! Almost got eaten by a seagull though
Alaina S — Google review
Lovely clean beach. Large areas are dog-friendly. Plenty of facilities such as cafes, toilets, parking, pubs, surf school as well as historic landmarks. Great views and ice cream.
Marie A — Google review
Great beach, it can get packed so pick your time carefully. The traffic scheme means it is easier to park at Crusoe's now 🙂. Whatever the weather there are always people here having fun, evsn swimming and surfung in the hail and snow 🤣🌊
Gregory H — Google review
Exquisite view and space to be with friends, family or by yourself. Eateries along the beach if you want to grab a drink or a bite. Lots of people come in to try surfing too.
Jen — Google review
Lovely long sandy beach popular with surfers; there is a surf school at the southern end. The incline is very slight so you have to go a long way out to get be out of your depth. There is a restaurant/caffe at both the north and south end of the beach, the one at the south end has lots of beach chairs out on the sand. As with Whitley Bay, the southern half of this beach is a no dog zone between May & September.

Lovely ship, good crossing, terrible inside bunk bed cabin!! Thin walls with party people going to Amsterdam! Drinking until 2am!! No sleep whatsoever! Expensive breakfast buffet like a sale opening day! Such a big rush for the overcooked inedible breakfast! ! Friendly, hard working crew.
Jacqui C — Google review
This was the first time we went from Newcastle to IJmuiden with DFDS and we won't do this again. Sorry, but for the money it costs and the experience DFDS has, it is really bad. First of all, the information in advance: there is none. You have no idea what your cabin number is, not even when you get it (you get it at check-in). Your account only contains the details of the trip, nothing else. And the journey itself: we were in a family cabin on deck 6 and it was like sleeping in the engine room. A huge noise, everything was shaking, no sleep. It was hot, the air conditioning barely worked. Really worthless. Upon arrival it was chaos: arrival time was 9:45, we were home at 12:45 and we live in Haarlem (20 minutes drive). From now on we will use the tunnel, which is a detour, but much more pleasant and much cheaper.
Frans W — Google review
We travel regularly on the Newcastle - Amsterdam route with our dog as we do the Europe trip 8 times a year. Check in process is smooth. With the dog, papers are checked at the same time as our passports and scanner is provided to check the micro chip. Once on board, staff will assist if you need help getting to your cabin. We always have a dog friendly cabin, so know where we're going - thanks for the gravy bone today from our dog! Dog exercise area means we can sit outside with the dog if desired. Then dinner - we always do the buffet, plenty choice and the food is good, would recommend booking - a decent sleep (smooth crossing helps 😊) and after a decent breakfast it's time to disembark. For us, this is a great option coming from Scotland and having 2000km drive in Europe to our destination. We arrive refreshed, well fed and ready for the onward journey. Note we do sometimes travel via the Eurotunnel or Santander /Bilbao crossings to south of England but this one is our favourite overall.

Myself and my wife had an excellent time on the DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam, cannot sing it's praises enough. Room was small but clean and comfortable, boat atmosphere was excellent especially on the return voyage, we had a really relaxed two days at sea and it was awesome. If I was to find faults it would be that there was a lack of food for my wife who is Coeliac, and the boats WiFi wasn't the best but to be fair we were in the middle of the north sea, drinks were a bit pricey but you can buy from duty free and save some cash if you want, all in all more than happy for what we got for our money. Will definitely be doing this again.
Lee R — Google review
The ferry is a little tired in places, but not so much that it's a problem. The staff are excellent and try to do whatever they can to help. Both the public areas and cabins are kept clean, with lots of visible cleaning of the former throughout the journey. Food at the buffet is much better than expected for a captive audience, especially the very well cooked meats. If you can justify the cost, the commodore de luxe rooms are great.
Chris W — Google review
Absolutely excellent to Amsterdam trip with excellent food and a real and a really nice with a good coach trip in to Amsterdam square and the canals before returning to board the boat again and once again excellent food the service from the staff were brilliant and of course it has a real duty-free shop yes a real duty-free shop not like the airports a pleasant experience and well worth the money all in all absolutely brilliant show get away with no worries or problems AJ
Alexander J — Google review
Needed to move personal effects from the Netherlands to the UK. Decided to rent a van and pickup the items myself via ferry, as that was the cheapest option available. Check-in and boarding were straightforward, and the ferry rides both ways were long (around 16 hours) but pleasant. Cabins were clean and comfortable too. I paid for the dinner and breakfast buffets while booking, which was cheaper than paying at the door. Both meals were of excellent value, with lots of options. Overall, I had a great time on the ferry and highly recommend this service!

Tynemouth Priory and Castle is a must-visit attraction in Tynemouth, offering a blend of medieval history and stunning sea views. Managed by English Heritage, the site features interactive displays, restored gun battery, and extensive ruins that provide insight into its rich past. Perched on the headland, visitors can explore the ruined buildings while enjoying panoramic views of King Edward's Bay and the River Tyne.
I had a wonderful visit the place itself was absolutely beautiful, made even better by the lovely weather that day. The staff were incredibly helpful and even offered a discount since the chapel was closed for maintenance. The views were stunning, especially the breathtaking sea view definitely a “wow” moment! The historical atmosphere really comes alive, especially with the old artillery on display. You can truly feel the stories of the past in every corner. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Really really worth a visit. It is mainly ruins but still stunning to look around. Sadly the chapel was closed for maintenance but the price reflected this. Thankyou Rose, the volunteer who kindly gave us so e background & history & was lovely to chat to

It's one of the most unique, sites of English Heritage. 900 years of history in one site, located on a small piece of land. Priory, gun battery, castle, and a cemetery mixed with absolutely amazing vue on s Tynemouth seaside and "high street". And on top of that and amazing picnic place located in the part of old tower. 10/10 #English Heritage
Hermann P — Google review
Windswept location, English Heritage site. Minimal educational effort that could use more signage. A lot of the structures are fenced off for understandable safety precautions but which hinder photography.
Robert L — Google review
This is a beautiful place, noting it's a ruin with over 900 years of history and it's the burial site of three kings. The surrounding coastline and village add to a good day out.

Tynemouth priory and castle is a great place to visit and explore, whether as a family or on your own. There's a bit work underway at the moment, but that only provides a reason to come back again when the work is completed.
Alan M — Google review
This castle is beautiful,in a stunning location, but certainly is not worth £9.50 to enter. I just couldn't warrant paying to see ruins like this and think it's a shame that beautiful historical places of natural beauty overcharge tourists to enter. It would be better if they asked for donations on the gate like other similar museums and castles do.
Sarah S — Google review
Definitely worth a little walk around but a shame there is so much fencing around the site blocking off large areas of the site. It would be great to see works done to make these areas safe

Raby Castle, Park and Gardens is a must-visit attraction in County Durham, offering a fascinating glimpse into medieval life. The 14th-century castle features splendid interiors, art treasures, and tapestries that provide insight into royalty's lives throughout the centuries. Its exterior boasts impressive towers and fortifications. Set in a scenic deer park, the castle welcomes visitors to explore its rooms and learn about its rich history from Wednesday to Sunday during the summer months when the gardens are in full bloom.
I went here for the first time today. On entry there was a market with the gardens and access to the Castle. The Castle is the main event in my opinion. The rooms are stunningly beautiful and well preserved. I would go again to take in all the sights and look for new things to catch my eye. There is parking and the person at the entrance took card payments for entry.

Went on a beautiful sunny day and was blown away by the gorgeous walled gardens. Lots of butterflies which our daughter enjoyed photographing. We went on a guided tour round the castle and Daphne was very informative and kept some of the "chatty" and wandering guests from the party in line with her professional competence 🤣. After the castle tour we walked through the deer park and captured some wonderful video footage of several deers running up the embankment and crossing the path right in front of us. Lovely experience for both us and our 15 year old. Very stylish and bright/airy cafe where we found something to eat quite easily for us adults, but if you are slightly particular with your foods and not a child it did prove a little more difficult. You can't go wrong with jacket potatoes but unfortunately our daughter isn't a fan. Was looking for something safe like macaroni cheese and garlic bread but we found something to suit in the end. Definitely worth the money. Spent 3+ hours here. Easy to find and parking great. Every aspect of this place was tidy and well maintained. One suggestion, the toilets separate from the cafe (never looked in the cafe toilets) could do with a sanitary dispenser.

Beautiful castle and gardens – well worth a visit! Stunning historic building, peaceful grounds, and a lovely walled garden. Great for families, especially with the deer park and the amazing kids’ play area (Plotters’ Forest). Staff are friendly and everything is well maintained. A perfect day out in the countryside!

What a great family place to visit. Historic castle with loads of insight into its history. Deer park to walk around with plenty of opportunities to see the deer. Lovely gardens to enjoy at your leasure and new well appointed cafe. Definitely worth a visit if you get the chance.
Simon W — Google review
With the right weather you can spend a long day there. A good combination of things for adults and children. The gardens alone are worth the visit. You can explore castle grounds & deer park at your leisure but I'd recommend the guided tours. Separate tours of castle & garden + we enjoyed a separate talk regarding the Raby estate & the development of the railways. Top notch facilities, a lot of effort & money has been spent making an excellent tourist attraction.
Richard V — Google review
We spent an absolutely amazing morning walking around the castle. Every room waited to be discovered with a member of staff and the knowledge they had waiting to pass on. It was an amazing trip back in history and very well maintained with staff with their wealth of knowledge, very friendly and welcoming. We didn't walk as much of the park as we would've liked, but finished the visit off with a yummy lunch. We will definitely visit again.

Down At The Farm is a delightful family-run destination in Sunderland that offers an immersive experience with both domestic and exotic animals. Visitors can engage in hands-on activities like feeding and handling various creatures, from reptiles to reindeer. The farm features exciting outdoor adventures, including two play areas, jumping pillows, a sandpit, and thrilling rides on tractors and barrels. Kids will love the chance to be mini zookeepers for the day while enjoying fun attractions like quad biking and a racing car track.
Great for younger kids. Annual pass is very good value. Tractor and 1x barrel ride included per child per visit. Nice activities to do like feeding the lambs, petting the rabbits, brushing the donkeys etc. Ample play parks all around the farm enough to keep the children entertained all day. Swings, slides, tunnels, play frames and 2x bouncing pillows and a sand pit. Ride on tractors and go-kart type cars too. Face painting available and a cafe on site. Only had the ice cream (which is delicious and good value). Ample parking and clean on site with plenty of bins and hand washing stations dotted about. Cant wait until our next visit !

A great trip! The animals seem very well cared for and the staff were helpful and engaged. The kids love it, you can get up close to the animals and they love the feeding! The included tractor ride and barrel ride are great fun, the play park is excellent and the cafe prices very fair Had a great day and will be back to supper our community!

Our favourite place. We've been coming since 2023 and absolutely love it. My boy is nearly 4 now and he especially loves the maze and halloween. They also have gluten free options in the cafe which I think is great. We've made some amazing memories here and can't wait to keep bringing him as he grows up

A fun trip for younger kids for a morning or an afternoon. Best bit was the herd of red deer appearing over the hill to be fed. Worst bit was how dirty and stained the baby changing facilities were.

Nestled in the heart of Shildon, Locomotion is a captivating museum that celebrates the rich tapestry of railway history. As part of the largest railway museum complex globally, it boasts an impressive array of locomotives and interactive displays that transport visitors back in time. This family-friendly destination is perfect for all ages, offering year-round access to its fascinating exhibits.
We visited this museum for a special visit by the flying Scotsman. For a small payment, you could enjoy a short ride being pulled by this famous locomotive. The museum has improved a lot since we last visited, with a second hall now open with more trains and carriages inside. There also seemed to be more interactive exhibits than last time. Well worth a visit, especially as it's free (donation is welcome)
Martin ( — Google review
A really good day out, brilliant exhibits with great information boards not long winded like other museums but tell you everything you need to know. For a free day out donations are welcomed it really is a great day out. We didn’t have time to see the historic buildings but we will definitely revisit and take them in next time. Not as vast as there sister museum in York but it is a great museum.
Simon R — Google review
My first visit here today, with my partner and friend. We had a super time enjoying all the special locos and carriages. Highly recommend for anyone in the area. Free to enter, donations appreciated. The staff were all friendly, especially the lady on the desk at the entrance. The shop has a great selection.

Locomotion is widely praised as an excellent, all-weather attraction that's completely FREE to visit, making it an incredibly popular choice for families and budget-conscious travelers. Visitors consistently highlight the sheer volume of historical trains and railway artifacts on display, covering a vast period of railway history. The museum is well-organized, interactive, and provides a rich educational experience. It has big parking spaces.

An absolutely fantastic museum. Visit was on last day of the 200 years of SDR exhibition. Had a lovely walk to engine workshop, housing, workmens cottages and walk on part of original SDR. Cafe was in one of exhibition halls. Good selection of food and drink. All staff were friendly. Easily spent 4 hours here.
Andrea C — Google review
Part of the National Railway Museum, the Shildon Locomotion museum houses historically significant items railway locomotives, rolling stock and other railway related items. Most importantly Locomotion No 1 which hauled the first railway passenger journey 200 years ago is here. I visited during the 200th Anniversary weekend, which meant it was busy. You could pay for a ride behind a replica of Stephenson's Rocket on my visit. There are two covered exhibit halls, a great gift shop, a large cafe, and plenty of toilets. Car parking is free, and the site is adjacent to Shildon Railway Station for those arriving by train. The site is fully accesible for those unable to walk any distance. A number of very early railway buildings dating from the 1800's are located a short distance away from the museum, and are well signposted. A great place to visit, not just for rail enthusiasts, but for anyone with an interest in Britain's industrial history.
David F — Google review
An excellent railway museum. Brilliant exhibits. Helpful staff. Lots to see and do for all ages. The engines are amazing. Easy to get to by car and plenty of parking.
Claire B — Google review
We had a lovely whistle-stop visit to Locomotion as we were passing on our way up north. Bolstered by a generous serving of lunch, we enjoyed a wander round the halls and a pleasant walk down the tracks. We definitely hope to return another day when we have more time to spend. I especially liked seeing Rocket, and we were also chuffed with our merch from the gift shop 👍

This felt very luxurious. huge rooms beautifully done. Dinner was exceptional - great choices all well made. The fish bouillebasse was perfect. Dinner was pretty busy with a constant flow of people. Spa was fab - we used the pool, hottub and steam room. Not too busy. Normally about 3 people on the pool at any time.
Emma W — Google review
We enjoyed staying at Redworth but be careful about reading the small print on the package deals so that you don't get caught out like we did. Rooms are nice and modern and clean, great bathroom comfy beds. Some of the rooms at the spa end of the hotel are a good walk from reception and dining which is no problem but if you are elderly you might want to ask for a room close to the restaurant. The spa facilities are nice, clean and well maintained. My wife had a treatment but she couldn't relax due to noise intrusion both externally and internally. The breakfast next morning was good and above average on quality and choice compared to other hotels. Would we stay again? Yes, but read the small print about inclusive dining
James G — Google review
3nights here on business. First night standard dining, service wasn’t particularly quick but the food was very good. We then had more of our team arrive and had a hot buffet set out each evening. Quality and presentation of the food was excellent. The hotel is “quirky” with lots of sets of stairs and annexes but this just adds to the character. Robe and slippers in room for comfort, good supply of coffee and hot chocolate! Gym is well equipped and maintained.
James T — Google review
Great experience on a midweek stay with the family. Big family room with plenty of space. Food options in the bar area were good, and prices quite sensible. Children were only allowed in the pool 8-10am and 3.30pm-5.30pm so it does get busy then, during school holidays.
Michael C — Google review
Had a half day spa experience here. Great staff, well looked after throughout. Gaz from the spa area was very welcoming as was Gemma when we sat for lunch. Both a credit to the hotel. The spa facilities are excellent and the massage treatment we all had was weakly good. I would definitely return and would recommend to anyone thinking of booking it

Had a nice afternoon tea here. Grounds are well kept and it was clean. Car park has a lot of space. Waitresses in the dining area were very much not amused serving us or taking our payments, but food quality was nice and value excellent so nothing to complain about and would happily come back. Sausage rolls were surprisingly delicious.
Kitsuna — Google review
Just had a night away for our anniversary paid to upgrade room which was lovely and spacious and comfy bed. Spa was very busy with no beds available. We were very disappointed with the evening meal as we were shown to our table she said no steaks are available as its been a busy weekend and my partner is a picky eater and there was not a lot more choice for him..we have stayed here a few times but we were really disappointed compared to previous visits .... Redworth hall is in beautiful grounds and was a shame it didn't seem as enjoyable this time as usual

Shopping experience is great, plenty to choose from and most shops are dog friendly so able to take the dogs with us. Only thing letting the place down is the fact it’s a nightmare to get in and get out as the traffic to leave goes right round the entire parking area. So much so that we’ve decided not to return again as it’s that bad.

Clean & well laid out. Great shops. More relaxed shopping now & no arrows to separate shoppers. Almost back to pre covid normality. Nice to see the park busy & people shopping. Went to the Tempur shop & got great advice off a lady there & a Tempur brochure. First class service & advice. A very clean outlet, the management should be very proud of their efforts & nice to see lots of shops trading. Lots of special events on & always busy at weekends & of course Bank Holidays. Still the Premier shopping outlet in the North East.

When visiting Seaham, take a stroll around town and make sure to stop by the Tommy World War One Soldier Sculpture - Eleven 'O' One, also known as Tommy. This magnificent 1.2-tonne steel sculpture by local artist Ray Lonsdale sits atop an ammunition box and stands at 9ft 5in tall. It depicts the emotions of a soldier in the first minute of peace in 1918.
The sculptures along the east coast are great, well detailed and informative , Seaham is worth a visit , its know for its glass along the beach , you can spend hours on the beach looking for the smooth. pebble like Glass , Nice front walk and shops along the front , its only a small place but easy to spend a day here . One of the best memorial sculptures I've seen. The surrounding area/garden and carpark all well kept with nice poppy themed benches . Only one thing as with all carparks you have to pay, however there is a home bargains just down the road for free parking

What an awesome sculpture, so much detail more so in the face. If you have not seen Tommy take a drive to Seaham. Maybe at the next Seaham Food Festival weekend, combine the two.

If you ever visit Seaham you must always stop by and visit Tommy. It's such a beautiful piece of art representing a very powerful moment in UK history. He never fails to impress. I've been visiting him for years and the beauty of him never fails to touch my soul. I don't want to say too much and ruin anyone's experience of visiting. Just be mindful you now need to pay to park, but your £1 is most definitely well spent. Enjoy!

On a whim we turned up today for the tour of this historical Georgian Theatre. What a standout experience we just had. Our tour guide, quite simply brought the history to life! Without a doubt, this was our most enjoyable experience, during our day of rest, from the Coast to Coast hike. This is a must do for any visitor to Richmond! Thank you again for an exceptional experience..

On a walk of the town and seeing the theatre we asked if we could take a quick look as near closing. We were warmly welcomed to look around and even given a mini tour. This historic theatre is certainly somewhere of great interest to visit and hope to one day see a performance from the gallery.

I have visited for both the tour and a pantomime show. Fantastic historical building, the tour was interesting, informative and our guide was a lovely gentleman. The pantomime was hilariously funny (Pinoccio). Beautiful stage and seating area.

Nestled in a beautifully transformed Victorian railway building, The Station is a vibrant community hub that seamlessly blends art, cinema, and gastronomy. This unique venue features an art gallery, a microbrewery, and The Station Cafe and Bar where you can indulge in everything from hearty breakfasts to delightful evening meals. Whether you're grabbing a quick coffee or enjoying Archers Jersey Ice Cream on the outdoor terrace, there's something for everyone here.
Lovely repurposed old station in Richmond North Yorkshire. Cafe, cinema, shops, artwork, ice-cream and micro pub. Building was really well maintained and really clean. Cafe was excellent with good choices of food. A wander down by the river is also recommended.

Saturday 13th September about 10am. We hadn't planned to visit The Station but due to the ridiculous parking fiasco in Richmond (cash only payments, only 2 hours parking etc in 3 other car parks we visited. Recommend doing good parking research before visiting! Cash only payments is archaic!) Anyway, we ended up here and decided to have breakfast instead of the original plan of breakfast in town. The breakfast was very good. The atmosphere was light and airy and you can still see the original station platform. You sit where the trains would have pulled in. You can easily walk into town along the river or along the road but I would beware of the traffic. It is signposted 20mph across the bridge but the majority of vehicles certainly weren't adhering to the speed limit. The proprietor should look at offering more review categories. It mentions buying tickets but not about the food or the amount spent etc. We didn't visit The Station to buy tickets.

Excellent Bakewell tart!! A rare pleasure. Good coffee and food too. Lovely building, good service, comfy! Toilets very clean. Justifiably popular but has the space. Been here 10 times or so so far…

Lovely place with shops, bakery, crafts and cafe. All looks lovely and we had hoped to have a coffee there but after waiting a long time to be served we gave up. Told the waitress why we were leaving but she wasn’t bothered, offered no apology so we decided to go elsewhere - there are lots of other lovely places.

Quiet when we arrived at about 3.40pm. We were shown to our table. We just wanted tea, coffee and scone and tray bake. All very nice. Lovely historic location. Nice gallery of artwork. Cinema in same building. Swimming pool adjacent and lovely walks. Maximum stay in car park is 4 hours, recent price increase. Internal photo and some of Easby Abbey which is a walk away.

Arrived too late for breakfast so had coffee and cake which was excellent. Later on came back for lunch which again was excellent, my Katsu chicken was perfect, not hot but delicious curry sauce. The food is definitely worth coming back for. What isn’t is up to speed is the staff! They are generally quite rude in their abruptness. It’s that “really did you have to make us work today” feeling received by their curtness. I witnessed the next table walking ( 5 adults & 2 children), when spoken to by one of the staff in an abrupt and discourteous manner. Oh well, 4 stars for fab food and lovely surroundings.

Stopped off at the station on our way to the Richmond Falls, Easby Abbey, and Easby Hall what a fantastic transformation and space, cafes, cinema 🎥, micro Brewery, art, sweets shop and fitness suites. Did our walk, then on the way back, stopped off for a well-deserved cuppa and fresh scones. All together, a fantastic day out.

Tweddle Children's Animal Farm is a delightful destination for families seeking an engaging day out. This charming farm features a petting zoo where kids can interact with friendly animals like goats, alpacas, and horses. Visitors can purchase animal feed to enhance their experience and even participate in bottle-feeding adorable calves. The farm offers a plethora of activities that cater to children of all ages, making it an unforgettable adventure.
We had a fantastic afternoon at Tweddle Farm! There’s so much to do – we only saw part of it, but we’re already looking forward to coming back to see the rest! The tractor ride was great fun, we got to see what the rest of the farm had to offer, and though we missed the barrel ride, it looked brilliant (and both are free!). Lots of friendly animals to pet and feed, plus great play areas indoors and out – including soft play and go-karting. Food and drink were easy to find with a cafe on-site and a cool airstream food trailer near one of the play parks, which was really convenient. We visited during the Easter holidays, so there was an Easter egg hunt happening, along with some fairground rides and fun games at the bottom of the farm, adding even more excitement to the day. A great day out for kids and adults alike!

Oh my word, where do I start! We went a weekday before the easter holidays the first time. First impression was that everythinh looked a bit tired…BUT: i was wrong. The kids (5&2) had an absolute blast. Meeting and feeding the animals, barrel rides, reasonable priced food and drink, sunshine and great outdoor fun. The kids kept on talking about it for weeks now, so we went back today. And it was even better. The weather was grey and rainy today, but we had so much fun! Meeting Rabbits and Ginue Pigs, Feeding Lambs, barrel and tractor rides, beautiful peacocks, service with a smile… to end it with an absolutely entertaininh foam party. The staff joined in and the young lady, long dark straight hair and a few tattoos on the arm was just so amazing with the kids! It was fabulous and a great day out. Each time we spend over 5h here. Thank you!

Brought our 1year 9 month ols Grandson here today. We all loved it. Friendly staff, lovely animals, soft play & outdoor park. Tractor rides & Barrel rides. Plenty to do for all ages. Next time we come we will do the full day.

We visited the farm while on holiday at the caravan park and WOW. Probably the highlight of the holiday for the kids. We had the best day. The staff were amazing and so good with the kids at the handling and feeding sessions. It was the most ‘hands on’ farm we’ve ever been to. Lots of cuddles and feeding. The parks & indoor play barn are also amazing. The barrel/tractor ride was a firm favourite! Excellent value for money. This farm has possibly swayed us to book crimdon dene again for a uk holiday.

Opened in 1893 and named after Major Robert Ropner, the park features scenic pathways, a serene lake with wildlife viewing opportunities, and a central fountain. It's an ideal spot for leisurely walks or picnics on the lush green lawns.
Really nice park and the new play area is great. Cafe was nice as well. With drinks, food and desserts. Outdoor and indoor seating

Ropner Park is reminds me of a Victorian Park where everything is beautiful. It is so well maintained. The pond itself is so beautiful. It has various varieties of ducks, moorhens or coots, swans and Canadian geese. Last time I visited there was damselflies and dragonflies. I spoke to a gentleman who said a new species of dragonfly was also using the lake. There is a brand new children's playground. Been open a couple of months after being refurbished. There is an onsite cafe. Food is lovely and reasonably priced. There is both in and outside seating. Park has a bowling green. Dogs are welcome. There is a band stand and a fountain. If you are lucky enough there are squirrels as well as green parrots x
Suzie S — Google review
During your walk you can enjoy watching lots of flower beds and green grounds. It has a beautiful lake with swans and ducks swimming in it. You can sit on benches or have a walk around this lake. There's a play area for kids with slides and swings. Kids would certainly love it. It is open to the public park and there are no tickets. For details I am adding pictures.

Definitely my favourite park to visit with my little one, we live out of town and still make the effort to come here whenever we can! The play park has a lot to offer, the cafe next to it also has beautiful, fresh food and the staff are always friendly and helpful with smiles on their faces. It's such a brilliant park for a 'walk round' too.

It's Stockton's jewel in the crown. A lovely park with plenty to see. Cafe, ice creams, children's playground, live music on Sunday afternoons through the summer on the bandstand, lake, swans, ducks and geese, bowling green, ornamental flower beds, grade 2 listed fountain. And lots of fetes fairs and festivals through the year.
Louise B — Google review
It's a nice enough park. Good for having a stroll around. There's a large pond at the bottom with plenty of wildfire there including parakeets. There's a café that sells a variety of food, hot beverages, cold drinks, and ice creams. There's also one nearby the park on the corner. There are bus routes and bus stops nearby that are a short walk away. There's no car park at the park, just street parking. The opening times of the park vary with the seasons too, like most other parks.

Butterfly World Ltd is a tropical rainforest hothouse located in Stockton On Tees, within the grounds of Preston Park. It offers a serene environment where visitors can walk amidst beautiful flowers and trees, while listening to the soothing sounds of waterfalls and pools. The hothouse is home to 80-120 butterfly species, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts. Additionally, visitors can observe meerkats and explore the reptile department for an added thrill.
Butterfly World is an experience that can only be described as magical. With stunning flora and gorgeous butterflies, it's truly a sight to behold. Additionally, they also house a variety of other animals and fish. If you are in the area, please do yourself a favour and stop in. Admission is £6 per adult, and this is a must-see spot. I will likely be returning, if for nothing else, than just the relaxing atmosphere and tropical climate held by the hidden gem.

Great trip for the little ones. You probably spend about 45 mins max here, but if you get a stamp you can reenter at anytime after a visit to the nearby Preston Park. There was loads of different butterflies 🦋 one landed on my head too! There's checklists (unsure if free or not) to spot different butterflies and carp fish food (20p per bag) to feed the fish on the way round. There's also an exotic animals area with snakes and lizards (behind screens). It is is hot in here for obvious reasons but not unbearable. Would visit again when visiting the nearby park. Under 5s are free.
Steph C — Google review
Very cheap for adults and kids under 5s are free. We love the place. Especially my four year old. The staff are lovely and friendly. The owner even gifted our daughter a toy butterfly. We couldn't thank them Enough. You can return as many times as you want on the smae day if you get a stamp and that allows time to visit Preston Park and the museum. It's that good all round. We visit regularly.

Had a brilliant day out at Preston park. Our granddaughter (age 6) particularly loved "Butterfly World", it was wonderful to see her little face light up when the butterflies came near her. The different colours of the butterflies are beautiful and amazing. Be warned, it is very hot in there, lol. There is also a great play park that caters for all ages. Plus the are loads of benches and seats and a huge grass area if you want to have a picnic or a rest. All in all a great day out for all the family.

We were in there for 9 minutes. It is lovely but extremely small, less butterflies from the last time I remember. I would go back but when Preston park is properly back open as the museum is closed until September and the play park and cafe are getting refurbishments.

Preston Park Museum & Grounds, located in the picturesque Preston Park, is a social history museum housed in a Georgian mansion. The museum showcases an extensive collection of artifacts that narrate the story of Stockton's past. Visitors can explore the lives of the families who once resided in the mansion and their influence on Stockton's history. Additionally, they can engage with volunteers in a recreated Victorian street and learn about the area's connection to the River Tees.
It's a nice place to walk around on a warm day, quite a bit of construction going on at the minute to extend the museum, though. The woods are beautiful and peaceful and good for exercising whether you're just out to walk the dog or go for a run. Also has toilets and a completely free car park, although it was pretty packed especially considering the kids are at school.

What a lovely day out! Great price, pay once and can return for a full year! There are some great exhibitions on lots to see! The mock street was so fascinating. Lovely grounds to walk around and have a picnic too! Highly recommend.

New playground area is lovely, good for all ages. The cafe is now renovated with modern toilets as always a bonus. Butterfly world is always a hot, they live the meercats and other creatures inside. The museum is very affordable to get into, an annual family pass is worth it. Kids love the old street and especially the sweet shop. There is a river walking distance that they can go and feed the ducks. The skate park also excellent for all ages, scooters and bikes.

My children had a great time playing for hours at the park here. There is so many different things to play on and its been done up since my last visit which i didn’t think could be improved and it was so over the moon. Lovely cafe here reasonably priced food and drink and nice clean toilets to use. They also have a big skate park here where it can be used for skates, skate boards, bikes and scooters. Absolutely brilliant fun for most ages, probably 5+. Lots of places to eat a picnic on the grass or tables and lots of walks to do here. Right by the water gives you lively views to enjoy also. The Museum is great place and the children will enjoy that too walking down a victorian street. Parking is free, which can only be a bonus as there are not many places that do that anymore. So come to Preston Park!!!

If you're more into wine, Corks and Cases independent wine merchant is also worth visiting for its extensive collection of over 300 wines and the opportunity to try their handcrafted gin through the unique Gin Experience.
Unfortunately I visited the brewery on a day when tours were not taking place, my fault, bad planning. What I did see however impressed. Lovely bar and restaurant area with a well stocked gift store attached. Suffice to say, I spent far too much but what the hell! Sited in a great part of the country too even though the weather was a tad cold.

Is Black Sheep Brewery and visitor centre the best example of a brewery taproom in the country? Quite possibly. We've visited yearly for the last 7 years, fantastic beers, food in the bistro is incredible, shop full of Black Sheep merch and this year we did the tour of the brewery too which was superb. Already looking forward to next year's visit.

This was so much fun, they were brilliant! We came here as an add on from our stag doo at farm adventure. It was amazing, unfortunately can’t remember the name of elderly gentlemen with glasses who showed us around and spoke through everything but he was fun, enthusiastic and passionate. Happy to answers questions, went extra and had some laughs with us. Even checked in after the tour to see how the food was. Speaking of the food our meals were delicious, we had a range of food from fish and chips to pies to burgers to soup and don’t get me started on how amazing the dessert was! Definitely book here if in town!

Stopped here for a tour and tasting on the outward journey of a recent holiday. The brewery and its modern visitor centre are located in a pretty village surrounded by beautiful Dales scenery. I found the bar and shop staff very welcoming and friendly, and our guide Emma was both enthusiastic and informative. After a short introductory video, she told us more about the brewery's history and how it got its name, then went on to explain about the processes of brewing beer, and passed round different types of malt and hops for us to look at. She then took us around part of the brewery and the fermentation room with its large vats (worth noting that the tour involves going up and down metal stairs). We finished up in the bar, where we were given a voucher for a free pint of our choice ( or three different 1/3 pints). Plenty of ales and ciders to choose from. I tried the special ale, and it was really good! Did not get to sample the food, but the meals I saw other visitors eating looked delicious! Relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Even the washroom in the toilets had a gorgeous view of the countryside. There's a great gift shop where you can purchase all the ales, cider and other drinks brewed here, plus clothing and souvenirs. An educational and fun way to spend a couple of hours!
Valerie H — Google review
Been before but 10 years ago, went with the knowledge that there was no availability for the tour, however on arrival there was! Apparently the booking system won’t let you book less than 24 hours, but we secured three places for the 1 1/2 hours tour which was very interesting and you get a taster session at the end of the tour. The lady on the booking desk was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble. The beer, obviously was delicious and from the sight of the food coming out of the kitchen, we wished we could have stayed longer. They really have got their heads screwed on properly with the shop, tours, bar and restaurant, which was very busy for a Thursday afternoon. If you are thinking about going, do it! You won’t be disappointed.

We stopped at the brewery whilst passing this Saturday. We decided to do the 2pm tour and grabbed a bite to eat first. Great to see traditional methods and machinery is still being used to this day. Interesting tour and a free pint in The Black Bull in Paradise, a tiny quaint pub on the side. Finally can stock up on merchandise in the fully equipped Theakston gift shop. Oh and did I say there was lots of beer?

As a student some 50yrs ago I discovered Theakston's Old Peculiar, it's been my chosen beer ever since. A visit to the The Black Bull at the brewery, is for me, like a visit to Shangri-la. I live quite some distance from Masham but we visit very regularly throughout the year. The staff are excellent & couldn't ask for better. Heaven for myself & family who visit with me.

We visited the brewery for my birthday. It is a really interesting tour and we enjoyed it very much. I enjoyed my pint of Nowt Peculier afterwards. It is a tasty bear with no alcohol, so good for drivers and those of us who have given up drinking alcohol. Excellent.
Margaret G — Google review
Brewery tour for two from "buyagift" cost £15 and we got to taste six beers (1/3 pint each) afterwards as part of the gift! The pub is full of character and you can watch the cooper at work in the back room. The gift shop is full of Old Peculier branded stuff as you'd expect - E.g. back to front clock! The tour was very informative and takes place in the original tower where Theakstons have been brewing for 200 years. You can sample the malted barley and the hops that they use, then follow the route from top to bottom as the beer is made. (Narrow and steep stairs inside so not good for some people, and bear in mind it is a working brewery so it is hot, noisy, and busy.) The beers on offer at the bar were oak-cask ones. The special in August was called "grousebeater" and was reminiscent of boiled sweets! "Lightfoot" is refreshing; I love the grapefruit-caramel of IPA; "old peculiar" tastes of bonfire toffee; and their "barista stout" was nicely coffee flavoured but with lots of vanilla to smooth out the bitterness. Cheers!

Enjoyed a visit today, although not a beer drinker I tried a sample of Spirit of Old Peculiar 40%! Firstly neat, it's a very strong smell/taste then with a small amount of Fever tree tonic resulting in a very acceptable drink. It's smooth and leaves a mild taste. You can actually detect Old Peculiar if you hold it in your mouth. I'm not an expert by any means but could have sat in the little tasting room/bar all day. Staff very knowledgeable.😁

Historical landmark
Mount Grace Priory, House and Gardens is a 14th-century site that was once home to the Carthusian Monks, known for their vegetarian and silent way of life. The reconstructed herb plot provides insight into the lives of these medieval residents, offering an atmosphere filled with scents from that era. The priory's unique setting has allowed it to flourish as a wildlife haven, attracting famous priory stoats.
A National Trust and English Heritage site. Both memberships have free access, but NT members need to pay for parking which I believe was £3 at the time. It's a beautiful house and grounds. The story behind it is interesting and compelling. We were fortunate to be there on a glorious day. Part of the allure is walking around the beautiful, idyllic grounds. There are plenty of picnic tables dotted about.

Beautiful tranquil place to visit.Spend some time looking around the house and read about the history of the house and the priory,it will help you to understand the ruins of the priory far better as you walk around. It is well worth a walk around the gardens and the ground. There is a small cafe on site as well.
Dave S — Google review
Beautiful gardens, priory was great. Signs dotted around to explain different areas. Staff who worked in the gift shop/front desk were lovely and the atmosphere was very relaxed. Coffee was lovely at the cafe as well.
Leah N — Google review
Surprised when we arrived to find that NT members had to pay for parking which is now £3.50. English Heritage members had free parking! Dogs are allowed on site but not in the house. The monastery behind the house was really interesting and could spend 2-3 hours here and get a feeling what it was like when the monks were here.
Matt H — Google review
National Trust and English Heritage run place, however, NT members have to pay £3.50 to use the car park. On a summer Sunday, it felt much quieter than Fountains Abbey, which meant peacefully spending about 3 hours exploring the site. No playground for the kids, but it doesn't matter, at the ruins can be scrambled up, and there are other trees and banks to run about on. The house is quite simple with a few rooms to explore and an interesting bit about how a monk spends his day (mostly praying). The ruins are the best bit with a recreated monk's cell that really brings the old rocks to life. Gardens are small but well stocked with wildlife from frogs to ducks and swans.
Nick L — Google review
We had a nice day out with the extended family visiting the house and garden. There was lots of space for the kids to run around and a trail to spot Sammy the stoat. Food and drinks are very expensive!

Thirsk Birds Of Prey Centre

Thirsk Birds of Prey Centre, located in North Yorkshire, is home to over 70 birds representing 30 different species. Visitors can witness the captivating aerial displays of eagles, falcons, hawks, and vultures in the beautiful garden setting. The center offers an interactive experience where guests can get up close with a variety of birds and even hold some for a fee. Partnered with Lightwater Valley Theme Park, the center now offers free entry to park ticket holders.
A wonderful bird of prey centre, with some unusual species. Staff were very friendly and the flying display was brilliant. Ringo the vulture was personal favorite, but there are some spectacular eagles and owls. In a lovely setting near an old manor in tolling countryside, a good place to spend a couple of hours or even the whole day if you aren't being dragged around by an overly enthusiastic 7 year old. He loved it to.

We weren't sure what to expect, apart from seeing some beautiful birds, but the shows were incredible! The keepers were so passionate and knowledgeable about the birds and the shows were breathtaking. I cannot recommend this place and show highly enough. Thank you for a fabulous day out.

A fantastic experience for my two teenage boys and myself as a spectator taking pictures etc. Took them for the full day experience for my youngest sons 16th birthday treat. The staff make it such a fantastic experience. Really friendly, knowledgeable and hard working. Made to feel very welcome and we just had a great day. The birds are awesome. So many different experiences in one day with loads of different birds. Can’t recommend it enough. Such a great experience and a wonderful memory and a great way to appreciate nature and the efforts of those people who help to preserve and look after such wonderful creatures.

Had an excellent time here. Though fairly small, it punched well above it's weight. The birds all seed to be happy, and they worked very well with their handlers. Owls, Eagles, hawks, and even vultures!!! The shop has various souvenirs, and some light snacks for lunch. You won't be disappointed with a trip here
Tom A — Google review
Highly recommended, my partner and I enjoyed the half day owl experience, but spent the full day at the centre enjoying the flying demonstrations and looking at all the different birds. Really knowledgeable staff who clearly care about the birds.
Claire F — Google review
We have visited this Bird of Prey Centre a number of times over the last 25 years or so. It is absolutely fantastic. You can clearly see all the birds are very well looked after. It is spotlessly clean. The staff are outstanding. The flying displays are out of this world. Different birds used in every display. They have now introduced an African flying display for the Sumner months. This was exceptional!

Went on a whim for something different to do and what a great decision really interesting day and at just over £20.00 for two good value lots of birds to see and a couple of engaging displays of flying too.

Saltburn Pier is a historic iron pier located in Saltburn, facing the North Sea. Recently restored to its former glory, it offers stunning views and a great walking experience along its 200-meter stretch. As the northernmost pier of its kind in Great Britain, it holds historical significance as the first iron pier on the North East Coast. Visitors can also enjoy Seldon's Leisureworld inside the pier building, featuring classic amusement games and modern arcade entertainment.
The last remaining pier in North Yorkshire apparently. Great beaches and cliffs either side and lots of bird life and dog friendly. Saltburn also has one of the last remaining water powered funicular tramways in the UK to transport people from town to the seafront without tackling all the steps. Well worth a visit.

It is a place that offers a beautiful and scenic experience from the beach. With stunning views of the coastline, various entertainment and restaurants, it is the perfect place for a relaxing walk or a fun day with family and friends. The range of activities at the pier and Cliff Tamway also make it a great place to visit. Overall, a beautiful mix of seaside charm and entertainment.
Princy — Google review
The allure of a truly beautiful beach is undeniable, a sanctuary where the world's chaos fades into the gentle rhythm of the waves. Imagine soft, powdery sands, warm beneath your feet, stretching out to meet the shimmering, turquoise embrace of the sea. I love it 🧡🧡🧡🧡
Sda R — Google review
Ideal for young families. Good stretch of beach, dog friendly. Wee cafe and restaurants. Usual fish and chips and arcade. Pier loverly and fenicular railway wonderful if working. Only downside getting up and down steps to beach.

A beautiful scenery of the coastline. Here is a solo trip itinerary: Put saltburn pier in your sat nav to get to the car park (pay and display) download ring go as the machines are fussy Walk round the beach. Get wet if you want to. Take it all in 🧘‍♀️ There is the arcade thing which was very exciting for a first timer like me :) barely won anything but still lots of fun playing. There is a cash machine inside so don’t worry if you don’t have cash on you. The food—-I had fish and chips duuuh 🤪 at the seaview restaurant. The views are absolutely worth it but there are other chippy places nearby so you can buy and sit on one of the many benches and enjoy it that way. Please have an ice cream as a dessert it’s just amazing plus you deserve it. Oh there is also Tomahawk steak house nearby with great views so if you fancied something else other than fish and chips Dog friendly Child friendly There is the famous old cliff tramway whi ch was pretty cool if you ask me. £2 for one way. Do it! You know you want to. Other things: -rent a wetsuit -surf school 🏄‍♂️ -Fishing -watch the sunset -people watching -take selfies -chat to random strangers Etc
Binta S — Google review
A gorgeous old pier, and magnificent views from the end. A nice walk down and ample seats to rest and take in the sea air.
Charlie P — Google review
The pier looks pretty cool and goes quite a way out into the sea. Although once you get to the end, it's just full of fishermen taking up all the room with their gear and rods. Surely give them a start time of 6pm to allow tourists and people fancying a quiet walk or some photo taking, clear room to do that. That always spoils it for me. Also the arcade that you walk through or around to get to the pier is another ticket induced nightmare. There's a machine that charges you £1 for Pokémon cards, then gives you one card, imagine a childs disappointment when that happens. There's also never any money tubs, here's some money bags to hold your change in, just isn't the same.
Damian G — Google review
It's a fairly ordinary pier, but we all love a pier, right?

Saltburn Cliff Tramway, established in 1884, is a renowned landmark featuring stained glass windows and offering scenic rides with stunning views of the sea. It holds the distinction of being Britain's oldest water-balanced funicular railway still in operation and the sole remaining pleasure pier on the North East and Yorkshire coast. Visitors can't afford to miss this iconic attraction while in town.
Saltburn Cliff Tramway – really nice to watch from outside and try it by myself. Visited on Saturday and it was rainy day, so needed to wait around 5-10 minutes in the queue to try this experience with one of the oldest water-powered funiculars still operating. The ride took around 1 minute and we were 12 persons and 1 dog inside of funicular. The staff were friendly and created a great experience. Worth to try!

What a wonderful experience! I’ve wanted to visit for many years, having been told stories about my family visiting 50+ years ago. It was a real bucket list item for me, and I’m so glad I’ve ridden on the tramway! Brilliant, friendly staff - very reasonable price for such a unique experience too - I’d highly recommend visiting and taking a ride in this piece of living history. My only ‘negative’ if you could call it that, was the lovely merchandise in the bottom entrance; after payment, there was a tram car waiting, so didn’t have time to purchase or properly look at the souvenirs, but I’ll make sure to ask for extra time for a browse next time (they had some gorgeous art prints). A brilliant experience through and through, I can’t wait to visit again. I felt like a big kid!
Charlie P — Google review
We stopped in just to ride the tram as it looked like something that we would enjoy. Parking was easy as there is a lot that runs along the coast in the town. The tram is near the southern section of the lot. Parking is free. Access is easy with a walkway from the parking lot to the entrance. Cost was £2 each way per person, and one can pay with a card. There is a long walkable pier at the bottom with benches to sit and just enjoy the magnificent views. The water was filled with surfers donned in wet suits when we visited on the 3rd Friday in September. The staff was super friendly, and we learned that they are volunteers. The engineer was eager to explain just how the tram functioned in order to go up and down the tracks. There is an arcade at the bottom but we enjoyed just walking out on the pier and admiring the stunning views of the coast. Be sure to check the hours of operation as they close rather early and you would need to visit during the day.

Saltburn cliff tramway is wonderful. Opened June 1884. 120 feet tall, 207feet of track. Carry’s 12 per car. What a gem of a place any town can have. Staff super friendly

Saltburn Cliff Tramway We like it and its always a fun way to travel especially with all your beach gear and children, however it is only a very short journey, 120ft in 55 seconds. So £6 for a family ticket down then £6 for a family ticket up, that's £12, way more than it costs to park the car for the day. For that reason I'd recommend £1 for adults/children, family tickets for £4, with pets free, but that's just me. However, it is a nice experience and a lovely memory, with vast views and it also does look pretty great watching the trams going up and down. The gents are always happy and polite and eager to chat about the history of the tram or just chat in general, so you don't mind paying a little extra. For future visits, I would have a happy hour, 50p travel between the hours of 1-2pm, off peak charges and also introduce ticket stubs for the children to hold and keep as momentos. Also my missus wouldn't let me ask if we identified as dogs would we only have to pay 80p 😂

A must for any visit to Saltburn! You can walk up and down the steps to get from the beach/pier to town but the funicular is much more fun! Saltburn town has some lovely indie shops and cafes in some stunning Victorian shop buildings.

Interesting technology, amazing it's still going! Worth a trip at least upwards, great views of the sea, and atmospheric old carriages. Fair value at £2 each way, and friendly staff. However the queue at the bottom can be long in the sun, they really should provide a bit of cover and a seat or two for older people.

Nestled along the serene banks of the River Esk, Danby Lodge National Park Centre is a tranquil haven for nature lovers and art enthusiasts alike. This charming visitor center offers breathtaking views of moorland, woodland, and historic landscapes that define the beauty of the national park. As an official Dark Skies Discovery Site, it’s perfect for stargazing on clear nights. The centre also houses Inspired By, a flagship gallery showcasing local artists who are at the forefront of contemporary art in the UK.
A great place to take kids and parents. Kids of a certain age will love the wood, fairy’s to look out for, and a bit to explore. This bit isn’t for dogs, and rightly so. Over the road is the main attraction, an old set of houses that serve food, sell ice cream, bits n bobs and at the end is a cafe. At the other end there’s toilets. Everywhere was clean and the play park is well catered for most kids. I think most the areas on this side was dog friendly, but I think dogs should be kept away from the play area.

Advertised as free day out but of course a fee to park. A great park for the kids. I'd describe this place as still a work in progress. We were disappointed we couldn't walk the dog through the wood - even on a lead. Yet she was allowed in the cafe and field near play park. Shop was nice- similar to national trust. Cafe looked nice, we had take away hot drinks and service was slow. A good effort for the kids with sweet things to do.

Absolutely loved this place. It's small but is just perfectly done. Very nice tea room and helpful and friendly staff. Beautifully kept grounds just so very peaceful. I was very impressed the attention to detail they have gone to here: The routes very very clearly marked and have information posts regularly as well as educational information for kids. It seems to be a popular place for school trips too - with a really nice playground and we saw a couple of groups of kids on a trip there clearly having a great time. Would have loved a trip here when I was a kid! Toilets were well kept - and even had baby changing facilities in both ladies and gents toilets which sadly is still not common even today! We were told they are planning to extend some of the walks and routes for Tramper hire - and that would be great. It is currently a short route but despite that we had a great time and will definately have it on our list to revisit when we are up this way again.
