Beautiful place which is always wort of visiting. Professional guide and beautiful garden 🪴 accessible also without having needed to buy an entrance ticket 🎫. Warmly recommended.
Radim H — Google review
I was amazed at the detail and original condition of the castle's furnishings. with a tour guide in Hungarian approx. 1 hour to walk around the castle. This was my best experience visiting a castle, the environment is so detailed.
Miklos F — Google review
(+) This castle is exceptionally beautiful with its magical English landscape park, paintings, trophies and interior design. The guests can gain insight into the region's and the Andrássy family's rich history. I think that the whole experience evokes the atmosphere of Sándor Márai's novel, The Candles Burn Till the End. (-) However, I couldn't pay by card at the shop, there was no time to really enjoy the exhibition since we had to rush with a group, and almost none of the exhibited pieces have Hungarian (altough the castle is a Hungarian heritage) or even English description. After all, it was absolutely worth a visit and take a look, but the maintainer could make progress through some changes.

A luxurious castle with a well-preserved interior. The excursion was with a very pleasant guide. There are souvenir shops and cafes on site. Paid parking (€4/day) right next to the castle.

(Translated by Google) We took the small railway up to the clearing, and from there to the ancient man cave on foot (only for really determined hikers, the road leading up is very steep), but it's even more beautiful, after many stops, we got there, the cave should be seen once, but it doesn't offer as much as it should. we hoped. On the way back, after the veil waterfall, countless more beautiful landscapes, all along the stream, trout lakes with transparent water, a fenced area called a wildlife park with a few deer. The bazaar and restaurants built for visitors are unreasonably overpriced, but the ice cream is delicious. The parking lot is paid, the program takes about 5 hours. Visszafele gyalog a fátyol-vízesés után számtalan szebbnél szebb táj, végig a patak mellett, átlátszó vizű pisztrángos tavak, vadasparknak nevezett elkerített rész néhány őzzel. A látogatókra épült bazár és éttermek indokolatlanul túlárazottak, de a fagyi finom. A parkoló fizetős, kb 5 óra kell a programra. 😊

A special plus is that there are many rest areas and snack bars along the way. (Original) A Szalajka-völgy igazi gyöngyszeme a Bükknek! (Translated by Google) It's a very nice and cozy place to visit. There are a lot of people going up the train, the wagons are full. It's better to walk up and take the train down. You don't have to climb the hill, the climb is not steep, except for the road leading to the cave. But it is already after the terminus. The road is an artificial road all the way, so you don't have to go through the mud even in bad weather. (Original) Nagyon szép hangulatos kiránduló hely. Boldogkő Castle is a beautifully restored medieval fortress that offers visitors an enchanting glimpse into the past, complete with stunning panoramic views from its ramparts. This captivating site features intriguing displays, including historical torture instruments and charming toy soldiers, making it a fascinating stop for history enthusiasts. Nestled in a region rich in natural diversity, Boldogkő Castle serves as an excellent base for ecological tourism, allowing guests to explore nearby attractions like Anna Sinter Cave and Saint Stephen Cave.
If you are in the area, this castle is definitely worth a visit. The view from the top of the hill is very beautiful. If you are lucky and you get good weather, it will definitely be a plus. I think you have a nice view also of the sunset. The entrance fee is only 6 euros, at the location you also have a restaurant with outside seating and toilets.
Veronica — Google review
It's a nice spot, but was somehow rebuild. So it's not really historical anymore. There's a coffee terrace and they also serve food.
Netzwerk D — Google review
An ancient castle is definitely recommended for a visit. A spectacular view of the surroundings also opens from above. Not suitable for those who have difficulty walking.
Eddy T — Google review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We visited Boldogkő Castle for the first time and it was an unforgettable experience. The location on the narrow rock ridge is spectacular and the view over the vineyards, fields and small villages is simply unique. Walking along the wooden pathway to the lookout point is a highlight on its own and absolutely worth it. Inside the castle there is much to discover: historic rooms, exhibitions with medieval weapons and everyday objects, as well as carefully designed areas that give a vivid impression of life in a medieval fortress. The courtyard and the restored towers also invite you to explore and enjoy. A big plus is the parking area right in front of the entrance which makes the visit very convenient. The ticket price is also very fair. Since we came in the low season we paid less than 2000 HUF per person which is a real bargain for what you get. In summary Boldogkő Castle is a must see when visiting Hungary. Whether you love history, nature or just want to enjoy an amazing view this place has something for everyone. We will definitely come back.
Oliver K — Google review
Way too crowded unfortunately (multiple parking lots kept filling up during our short time there). The castle itself is very picturesque, however its not enjoyable when its filled to the brim with people. Might be better in the off-season..
István N — Google review
A beautifully decorated castle offering visitors about an hour of exploration through various furnished rooms and wonderful views.
Christian C — Google review
By far the best castle to visit in the region. Only a bit self guiding since the signalisation is not that easy to follow
Willem E — Google review
Very nice castle. Worth to take a detour if you're in the area. The views of the surrounding plains are very nice. In the interior there are models, with tin soldiers, depicting various battles the Hungarian took part in. There's a decent size car park, a restroom and a restaurant/bar.

A beautiful historic castle surrounded by nature. There is a walking path around the castle and you don't have to buy a ticket unless you want to go inside of the castle. The gardens surrounding it are very nice
Darlene — Google review
Hungary This castle is a truly wonderful historical site, filled with fascinating artifacts and rich stories from Hungary’s past. Although it looks small from the outside, stepping inside feels like traveling back in time. You’ll discover the depth of Hungarian history in every corner. The guides—especially the women—are incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming. They explain everything you need to know with passion and warmth, making the experience even more memorable. Their kindness and expertise are a highlight of the visit. Highly recommended for anyone interested in history, culture, or simply a beautiful and meaningful place to explore.
Peter D — Google review
Stunning castle! Immaculate grounds, thoughtful exhibits, and wonderful staff. A must-see in Sárospatak
Richard F — Google review
The place is amazing, however the lady at the reception, selling the ticket was unkind and rude. Every time someone asked her something she was extremely annoyed. There was an entrance fee and still the toilet cost extra money. So many tourists and visitors, I would work on making the place more professional with English guidance.
Panna M — Google review
The imposing walls and beautiful Renaissance details of the Sárospatak Rákóczi Castle are truly fascinating as you walk through its historic halls. The whole site radiates a special atmosphere, as if it takes you back to the era of the Rákóczi family.
Erika D — Google review
You can enter the castle itself, which is nice, but if you want to visit more of it, you have to buy the ticket. There are several options, with some of them being for example two for one, or three for one... The guide is usually in Hungarian, but I guess if you want it in other languages, you can ask beforehand. You can also walk in the huge park and there is a large playground for the kids. There are many restaurants and parking space around the castle, and the area around the castle is also beautiful and calm.
Ákos M — Google review
It’s very expensive and they even charge for using the toilet. The coffee shop is only a vending machine and the people in charge of the exhibits are extremely rude. One of them closed one of the museums 20 minutes early and sent people away event though you are required to pay extra for this museum.
Joaquin G — Google review
A nice castle at the top oin the middle of Sarospatak. A great view of Bodrog and the city from the top. The entrence is a bit too expensive, but you can see a lot for free as well.

Hungarospa Thermal Hotel is a casual hotel located within a spa complex, offering simple yet comfortable rooms. The hotel features both indoor and outdoor pools, tennis facilities, and a bar for guests to enjoy. Situated in an enormous spa area, it is known as one of the largest in Europe. Guests can expect friendly staff and traditional cuisine served at the on-site restaurant. Additionally, the hotel offers access to specialized consultations and treatments.
Great place, rooms average but no major pain points, good food unfortunately limited number of English speaking personnel making simple requests a chat with Google translate :) but it was fun in its own way.
John S — Google review
There is nice hotel with local bath as well as the access to the big area of bathes and water pools. The breakfasts and dinners are good, food is delicious. The room is nice, comfortable beds, good shower and a toilet, spacious balcony. Some negative points: - the servant tried to provide us with dirty napkins which is disgusting; - the servants clean the tables just during our sitting there and eating which is unprofessional; - after some days of our stay, the canalisation was broken and the hotel had no water during a day, after that our room was smelling like a sheet and it was really unhealthy and inappropriate; - the shower cabin is extremely small
Margarita S — Google review
No shiny luxury hotel but splendid in any other thinkable way. The venue is midsd an enormous spa area, probably the largest in Europe. In winter, all rooms, and access corridors including cocktail bar allow walking in bath robe. Very friendly staff, especially at the restaurant. Breakfast, lunch and dinner offer an authentic traditional menu, usually slow cooked. One ground floor corridor provides access to dozens of specialised consultations and specialised treatments. The inside spa area offers a special immersed spine treatment. When clear sky in winter, check out the stars in the outside pool after 18h. Wheelchair friendly parking and building access. Wheelchair friendly rooms can be found on the first floor. And one more thing: a new thermal jazuzzi is under construction, likely going in production from 2025 onwards.
Freddy V — Google review
For a 3* hotel room is very good! Service is nice as well. The food....OMG...Tasty and Delicious 😋🤤...I really want to go back!
Alex P — Google review
The service personnel was really friendly, the thermal water is the best that I had ever experienced. The room had some problems, but was acceptable. The dinner was really good. Some people are not go under the shower before going to the pool, but it is mandatory to get really clean to the pool to get a clean water. There where plenty of health services, like massage, hydrotherapy, etc, and the price is not really expensive, so everibody can afford it. Don't by the AQUA PALACE pass, only, if You would swim with hundreds of people together in little pools. For kids this is a good place, but for a couple definitely NOT!
Péter L — Google review
The hotel was fine for 3 stars but not 3+ for sure. Certainly not recommended for families traveling with babies or small children; they don't really have the facilities to make you feel like home. With older kids it is totally fine. The food is pretty delicious and they offer a big variety however not the best if you have any kind of food allergy or if you are vegan. The big plus is that you can use the open air bath and the Aqua Palace as well for free if you stay here.
Herta O — Google review
Clean, fine cousine, kind staff, great chance to visit the Aquapalace (fee included). The pools of the hotel are not allowed for kids.

Additionally, there are kids' playgrounds by the pools and a spacious well-equipped section for children on the upper level. The facility also includes clean changing rooms, well-maintained toilets, and dining options such as a cafe and cafeteria.
A very nice spa, perfect for a family vacation. There are several pools, each with a different theme. At the first floor, there are pools for baby's as well as a trambuline area. The water is heated, except for the water slides area. Tickets: after 4 pm you pay less for the entrance.
Chis A — Google review
Outside water park, water is quite cold. It’s annoying if you want to take kids to the slides you have to pay another fee similar to the regular entrance. Inside pools this year 2025 looks like not that clean than in previous years, a bit moldy.
Tudor B — Google review
We bought tickets and paid extra for seats "on the shore". We swam in the water with the whole family. Our daughter dived and so on. After half an hour, we saw a piece of human defecation in the pool. Literally. No one paid attention to it. It was hard to find the workers. We contacted the lifeguard. After another 20 minutes, guys with shovels came and took it out. We did not receive a refund or an apology from the establishment. We swam in defecation for 50 euros. Horrible!!!
Татьяна Б — Google review
A great place to spend a few days relaxing and having fun. They shoul build more indoor pools with bigger adult slides to attract more people. But for me was a great experience there. Friendly staff and somme of them speak english so thats a big plus. It's cheap and great. Also indoors you can buy food and drinks. Worth every penny.
Andre A — Google review
Great place to relax with the kids. Not cheap at all but 1-2 days worth visiting. Kids place upstairs with slides and chill area.
Alice V — Google review
I have to say I did not know what to expect from this place, and i have been positively surprised on how nicely this place was organized. For someone coming outside of Hungary the prices were pretty good but I think for the locals the prices can be on the higher side. The place offers a food restaurant and a small caffee both are really nice . There is a nice food selecton in the restaurant food standards are pretty much the same as you'll find across Hungary so I do not want to compare it with with what I am used to overall the selection is nice everyone will find something for themselves. I got to say the aquapalace staff were the first people I met on my couple day trip who managed to communicate with me in English so thats another big advantage of the place. Other refreshments are also offered typical tea coffee cold drinks but also beers and spirits. Pools were fantastic overall everything was super clean water seemed fresh of course its thermal and mineral water so it has for example specific smell and look but you could tell the pools were clean considering the amount of tourists and users in genral this is a big achievement from the organisational point of view. I've been in minter so I can only talk about the indoor pools. The one negative side were the saunas since you pay extra for those i was really expecting something more extra but found only the steam sauna and classical roman sauna to be operational. Really hoped for something extra like salt or mineral saunas. Everything is nicely organised with the locker facilities unfortunately they do not offer robes rental these are only available for the guests of their hotel so keep that in mind yeah from my side the place is really a 5 star and I highly recommend it as long as you don't expect god knows what from such a place like some people in the reviews 😉
Adrian — Google review

"The Black Eagle" Palace

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Architectural Buildings
Nestled in the vibrant Unirii Square, the Black Eagle Palace stands as a stunning example of Secessionist architecture, completed in 1908. This architectural gem was designed by Marcell Komor and Dezso Jakab and showcases the artistic movement that emerged from Vienna. Originally a multifunctional space featuring a hotel, theatre, cafes, and shops, it has undergone significant rehabilitation since 2011.
Beautiful place year round! Restaurants and cafes inside as well as a pub and bar. Very cool decor at all times of the year. This time we walked through on Christmas and the dictations are awesome! Beautiful palace.
Sighting S — Google review
This is a free entry place, it's a shopping gallery, and it's an historic building for the city, quite wonderfully restored and brought back to modernity. The painted window that is on the outside of the building is new, but the one that is on the inside, that's the original one from 1907, when the building was built.
Lucian C — Google review
The Black Eagle Palace (Palatul Vulturul Negru) in Oradea is nothing short of an architectural jewel and a must-visit for anyone seeking a blend of history, culture, and elegance. The moment you walk through its Art Nouveau gallery, you’re transported into a different era — intricate stained-glass windows (with the iconic black eagle), lavishly decorated passageways, and a refined atmosphere that makes the entire experience feel exclusive. Beyond the stunning architecture, the a la carte restaurant inside offers a perfect culinary complement to the setting. Their menu is carefully curated, with standout dishes like pasta all’Amatriciana, which strikes the perfect balance between authentic Italian flavors and a refined presentation that matches the palace’s grandeur. Whether you're in for a full meal or just an aperitif, the cocktails and fresh, fruit-based drinks add a refreshing touch — perfect for lingering in the stylish gallery. The Black Eagle is more than a landmark; it’s a living space for art, fine dining, and relaxation, making it ideal for a leisurely lunch, an evening drink, or even just a quiet moment to admire its historic charm. It’s no exaggeration to say this is Oradea’s cultural and social heart — a destination that delights the eyes and the palate in equal measure.
Cristian C — Google review
Absolutely gorgeous place. It's close to being kitsch but doesn't break the border. Reminds me of galleries of Milano and Torino, but with that wonderful, crazy art nouveau soul. I couldn't stop staring and taking photos of the place. Inside the palace, there are nice restaurants, pubs, and shops.

The Black Eagle Palace (Palatul Vulturul Negru) in Oradea, Romania, is a stunning example of Art Nouveau architecture, designed by architects Dezső Jakab and Marcell Komor between 1907 and 1908. Situated in Union Square, this Y-shaped building features a glass-covered passageway adorned with intricate stained glass, including a prominent black eagle emblem. Originally serving as an inn and later a hotel, the palace evolved into a multifunctional complex housing shops, cafes, and entertainment venues. Its ornate facades, decorative elements, and vibrant interior make it a must-see landmark, reflecting Oradea's rich cultural heritage and architectural grandeur.

Beautiful building, you can spend some time looking at the details and do not forget about the glass mosaic, it's beautiful with the sun shining through it

Very interesting place. The interior is really nicely decorated; it's fun to walk through even if all the cafes are closed during the day. Beautiful stained glass windows. Many great restaurants. You'll definitely find somewhere to eat. One great thing is the city center itself, a great place for attractions. Good emotions for everyone.❤️❤️❤️❤️

A very beautiful building with wonderful architecture. When I pass by I can’t take my eyes out of it. The gallery passing through it is very beautiful also, and there you can stop for a coffee or shisha. Beautiful by day, and beautiful by night!

Oradea Fortress

Fortress
Sights & Landmarks
Oradea Fortress, a reconstructed bastion fortress in Italian style, holds centuries of history within its walls. Dating back to the 11th century, it has evolved from a fortified monastery to a flourishing center of Renaissance culture. The fortress showcases the city's rich past with displays on its history and even offers visitors a glimpse into the disco scene of the 1970s and '80s.
Really nice place to visit in an afternoon! You can take a walk around the fortress and even climb on the bastions. There's restaurants and entertainment inside the fortress. The history side is not however the main attraction. It has more of a fare kind of vibe. You can also find all sorts of artisanal shops. There is also large public parking right across from the fortress towards the church. I also recommend walking in the park around the fortress. There's even a pond with lots of fish!

A special historical monument from the Middle Ages, but also a place to relax, find some silence amidst the noise of the city and enjoy nature. Traditional handicraft fairs and various celebrations or festivals are often held here, in this beautiful setting. Highly recommended!

Oradea Fortress offers a rare mix of historical depth and living culture. It's not just a fortified relic but a pulsating hub of heritage—where fortified walls, evocative exhibits, and lively events converge. Whether you're a history buff or simply looking for an enriching experience, Cetatea Oradea is a must-visit highlight in the city.
Razvan M — Google review
The fortress has been very well restored. The museum inside the fortress is superb—the most beautiful one I’ve seen so far. You should set aside about an hour and a half to two hours to visit it. It’s definitely worth it, and I highly recommend it!

I recommend the history museum whole heartedly, we spent 3 hours inside and didn't get bored. I'm not a museum enjoyer, but 90% of the rooms inisde were interesting and well organized
Horia M — Google review
Nice experience and very friendly local people in a place full of history, distinction and royal figures. The fortress is well kept, but I guess they still need to finish some renovation on one of the outside walls. There was an Easter fair for the children when we visited, with lots of food and drinks trucks. The prices are reasonable.
Monica L — Google review
The city of Oradea was founded by King Ladislaus (1) the Holy (1077-1095), who built in the second half of the 11th century a cathedral complex dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary, where he was buried after his death in 1095. After his sanctification in 1192, the founder king's tomb became a pilgrimage site of European importance. The Episcopal Center in the fortress became a religious center with a special significance, being a royal burial site, a place were trials by ordeal were performed, a humanist cultural-scientific center of European significance. As it was described by canon Rogerius, the Mongolian invasion in 1241 led to the destruction of St. Ladislau's fortress. The new fortress built in the 14th century had an irregular, rounded shape and towers. The reconstruction of the Gothic cathedral and the building of the episcopal palace begun during the time Andrei Bathori (1329-1345) and Demetrius Futaki (1345-1372), were bishops. The fortress is decorated with St. Stephen's, St. Emeric's and St. Ladislau's bronze statues (1370). King Ladislau's equestrian statue was made later, in 1390, but all four of them were created by sculptors Martin and Gheorghe from Cluj. A remarkable cultural and scientific life developed in the 15th Century in the Episcopal Center from Oradea thanks to the patronage of the bishops. The court of bishops Andrea Scolari (1409-1426), John Vitéz de Zredna (1445-1465),, John Filipec (1476-1490) and Sigismund Thurzo (1506-1512) became one of the most important cultural centers of the Eastern-Central European Renaissance. It was the place where the episcopal library was built, where Janus Pannonius (1434-1472), was a canonist, where a European Literary Asylum functioned and Tabula Varadiensis was written by Viennese astronomer Georg Peuerbach, the father of astronomy. Due to the political and military changes in the late 16th century, the Principality of Transylvania came into possession of the fortress, led by the Great Captaincy of the Oradea Fortress (1557). Transylvanian princes quickly recognized the strategic military importance of the fortress, whose reconstruction began under the rule of prince John Sigismund (1540-1571). The medieval episcopal fortress was gradually transformed into a strong redout specific to late Renaissance and it was built in two stages: between 1569 and 1598, the outer redout with five bastions, between 1618 and 1650, the inner fortress, the princely palace of princes Gabriel Bethlen (1612-1629),, George Rákóczi I (1630-1648) and George Rákóczi II (1648-1657).

During my visit last week, there were some events (live music, DJ) happening near the fountain. It was amazing vibe. It was a lovely park, very clean and very green. There were water drinking fountains, outdoor exercise equipment available. People could hire pedal boards. Additionally, there were plenty of seats available. It was a surprise to see people hanging hammocks on the trees and relaxing in them. Trees looked sturdy enough to hold the extra weight. This park is great for exercising or going for a walk, relaxing alone or with friends and family.

The imposing stone and bronze Matthias Corvinus Statue, erected in 1902, is a must-see attraction around Christmas time. Visitors can enjoy the festive atmosphere with Christmas music, brightly lit wooden storefronts selling handmade goods, hot chocolate and tea, a carousel ride amidst historic buildings and monuments. The aroma of hot chimney cakes cooking over a fire adds to the magical ambiance along with the sound of people laughing on the outdoor skating rink.
A must see when you are in Cluj Napoca. The monument is impressive by size, but when you get the cathedral in the background it gets to be even more impressive.

The city is part of the hungarian and romanian common history. Both of the nation can be proud of the architecture, the universities culture and the mostly youth population how is eager to add more and more to this town. The only downside I have experienced was the traffic and parking situation. Other than that I trully recommend to spend some time here.

An absolute gorgeous are to visit around Christmas time. Christmas music playing, little wooden lodes ( store fronts) all lit up selling hand made goods, mugs of hot chocolate and tea, a carousal, Historic buildings and Monuments, hot chimney cakes (hollow cakes covered in cinnamon sugar, cooked over a fire), and the sound of people laughing on the outdoor skating rink. When we went in 2014 Coca Cola and Santa Clause also happened to be there. Literally the most perfect "hallmark Christmas" you can imagine.

The Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden, part of Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, is a sprawling 14-hectare masterpiece founded in 1920 by Professor Alexandru Borza. This historical monument houses over 10,000 plant species from around the world, organized into distinct sectors like ornamental, phytogeographical, systematic, economic, and medicinal. The garden's rich history and architectural allure make it an enchanting oasis for relaxation and exploration.
Beautiful botanical garden, plenty of things to see and really big. There are huge exotic plants in the greenhouse and the atmosphere near the little river is amazing and calming. The price is fantastic , mostly for students and kids. My inly critique is that there are a couple broken bridges and wooden structures that should be repaired and fixed up. But still a great place, one could easily spend two hours here, even half a day if someone wants to study or relax in a calming environment.

Cheile Turzii, a stunning natural reserve in Cluj County, is a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts and families alike. With its rich history dating back to the Roman Empire—evidenced by various artifacts—the area was designated as a Natural Reserve in 1938 and later recognized as a UNESCO natural monument.

Salina Turda

Mine
Salina Turda is a fascinating salt mine located in the Durgau-Valea Sarata area of Turda, Romania. Dating back to medieval times, it has been repurposed into an underground theme park with a mix of history and entertainment. Visitors can enter through an old entrance and walk along a long corridor leading to the main part of the mine.
Turda Salt Mine is absolutely amazing. The sheer size of the underground space is incredibly impressive. The scenery is truly unique — at least it was for me. Simply breathtaking. I do agree with other reviews that more information or explanations would enhance the experience, but overall, it's just an astonishing place.
T. M — Google review
Not as impressive as some other mines i've seen but the setup inside is quite unique and still worth a visit and a good short trip from Cluj. The lighting and the lake were unique aspects of this mine. I spent a total of 1.5 hrs in the mine at a relaxed pace it's enough to see everything. Easy directions from Cluj: Take the Fany bus from Pod Traian (search it in Maps). Buses depart thrice an hour and cost 14 lei. Upon reaching Turda you can walk 20 minutes to the old entrance (search Salina Turda old entrance on maps). Once you get into the mine from the old entrance note that there is a 8 minute walk through a long passageway to get to the central part of the mine. When returning from Turda to Cluj you can catch the Fany bus back at "Fany bus (Turda Centru)" in Google Maps. It's at the northern edge of Piata Republica.
Kevin A — Google review
This was my first mine experience, hence for me it was awesome and a must see experience in Romania! I recommend going on off season as it can get very crowded on summer. There is only one lift, then you can imagine the waiting time if you don’t want or can’t get the stairs.
Lilian R — Google review
Amazing place! We payed around 13€ and it was definitely worth it. A lot of places to sit and enjoy. There is a big line for the elevator up but the stairs aren’t that bad at all. The only problem is to get back to Turda without car, but there is a bus few times a day.
Lea T — Google review
Soooooo coooooool. I was skeptical at first but it really is a unique experience worth going to. If you’re not able to use stairs, be prepared to wait in longer lines for the elevators but I didn’t experience any wait for any stairs. The placards provided tons of great history but if you’re not into that, the pure awe of the open air subterranean mine is sure to intrigue your sensibilities nonetheless. There are plenty of activities for the little ones and I enjoyed the rowboats best. Free parking on the road before the entrance if you don’t mind walking about five minutes. Highly recommend visiting and then going into Turda for some food and shopping 🤗
Ben S — Google review
Definitely one of the most unusual attractions I’ve been to in Europe, Salina Turda is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the Cluj area. The site is an easy walk from Turda town centre, although it was raining when we visited so we took a cheap taxi (I believe there is a shuttle bus too). You have to walk down quite a lengthy walkway to get to the main chamber of the salt mine - bring some warm clothing with you because it’s quite chilly once you’re in there. The sheer scale and magnitude of the main chamber are quite overpowering and provide an atmosphere which is rather eerie and daunting. There are lifts down to the bottom, but stairs are also an option. Boats can be rented on the lake, for an additional cost.
William I — Google review
A unique and impressive underground attraction. Clean, therapeutic air, beautiful salt formations, a lot of stairs and fun activities like a Ferris wheel and boat rides. A must-see in Romania!

Impressively large mine and well maintained for tourists. The photos and videos speak for themselves and this is worth a visit. We exited at the 'wrong' exit, at the end of the 750 meter tunnel and ended up on the other side of the village, which was a long walk back.

Reunification Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Coronation in Alba Iulia, is a stately Romanian Orthodox cathedral with a rich historical significance. The cathedral boasts pleasant Romanian architecture and features an inner courtyard and a separate bell tower. It is well-maintained and blends seamlessly within the citadel and neighboring buildings.
Magnificent exterior and beautiful grounds, especially on a sunny evening as a priest walks round beating a plank of wood with a stick. The bell tower over the gate is particularly impressive. During the evening prayer service there is a bit of a PA system clash with the Catholic Church next door.

It is located in Sibiu, Romania, amidst a backdrop of medieval buildings that exude historic charm and romantic allure. The city itself boasts significant museums and historical sites such as the Brukenthal Museum, Astra Museum of Folkloric Traditional Civilization, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Evangelic Church, Council Tour of Sibiu, and old fortress tours.
Beautiful place. Lot of stories. Close to piata mare so you will find a lot of things to do there and good food.

Cute spot, easy to find. Great for meeting friends or for viewing the small square or the lower part of Sibiu.

One of the most beautiful and iconic landmarks in Sibiu! The Bridge of Lies is full of charm and history. It’s a perfect spot for photos, and I love how it connects the old town’s storybook streets. The view from the bridge is amazing, and it’s surrounded by great cafes and shops. If you visit Sibiu, you must see the Bridge of Lies!
Lance H — Google review
The Bridge of Lies in Sibiu may be small, but it’s packed with stories. Locals say it creaks when someone lies while standing on it—spooky and fun to test out. Built in 1859 as Romania’s first cast-iron bridge, it connects Little Square to Huet Square and offers a great view of the old town. It’s one of the most photographed spots in the city, with a great view of the lower town below. A quick stop with character while wandering Sibiu’s historic center.

The Bridge of Lies (Podul Minciunilor) in Sibiu is a must-see! This historic cast-iron bridge, dating back to 1859, is not only beautiful with its Neo-Gothic details and city coat of arms, but it’s also surrounded by fascinating legends. Locals say the bridge creaks if someone tells a lie while standing on it—such a fun story to share with visitors! The location is perfect, connecting Piața Mică (Small Square) to Huet Square, and offering wonderful views of the old town. The surrounding area is full of charming architecture, cozy cafés, and cobblestone streets—great for photos and walking tours. Whether you’re here for history, legends, or just to take in Sibiu’s medieval charm, the Bridge of Lies is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Transylvania! 📍 Easy to find in Sibiu’s historic center 📷 Great photo spot, especially in the evening

The Council's Tower

Mentioned on

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
The Council Tower, dating back to the 13th century, stands as a symbol of Sibiu between Grand and Lesser Squares. Originally a gateway in the city's fortifications, it now offers panoramic views of the town for a small fee. The tower is located near Piata Mare and Piata Mica, where historic guild buildings once housed craftsmen. Visitors can explore this area and then climb the tower's seven stories to enjoy breathtaking city vistas.
Was here in November, the minute they opened. The entrance is not from the square side by from the side that faces bridge of lies, it’s a small wooden door. You pay, take steep spiral staircase up the tower, passing a couple of floors of spaces with occasional exhibits. When you reach the top - the view of Sibiu is beautiful! Very cheap (I believe it was about $2), but cash only!
Vlada — Google review
Nice view, interesting to see a medieval tower from inside.

The Council Tower is a must-visit in Sibiu! Located right in the heart of the Old Town, it's easy to find and the perfect starting point for exploring. The tower is perfectly situated between the two main squares, Piața Mare (Great Square) and Piața Mică (Small Square). Its ground-floor passage connects the two, making it easy to access.
Gilad Y — Google review
Very beautiful birds’ eyes view of Sibiu. Best time to go is before the sunset on a sunny day. My pictures are not the best because of the cloudy conditions.
Jenny Z — Google review
A lovely tower that perfectly fits the vibe of the square. The nearby streets add even more charm – those kinds of cozy alleys where you might stumble upon something interesting or at least a great café. The tower dates back to the 13th century and originally served as a defensive lookout and fire watch. Today, it's a nice spot for a short climb with beautiful views over the old town. Or you can simply enjoy it from below, as it calmly completes the picturesque feel of the whole area. :) (instagram --> michaelnae)

Unexpectedly beautiful. I didn't expect to like it so much, the view is great and I loved how good the inside looked too.
Ana C — Google review
For a small fee you can view a part of the beautiful city-with its gorgeous architecture. It is a little narrow climbing up the tower, so keep that in mind. I was there at the end of November and there was already a Christmas Market, but the tower isn't so crowded, the waiting time isn't more than 10 minutes (if any)

The ASTRA National Museum Complex is a cultural gem in Sibiu, Romania, featuring four museums that delve into ethnology and history. One of its highlights is the ASTRA Open Air Museum, nestled in a picturesque forest beside a tranquil lake. Covering 250 acres, it showcases over 300 buildings representing diverse architectural styles from villages across Romania.
It is a wonderful place to be. Walking round a lake through the forest while are able to visit old water, wind mills, hunting lodges, winery, buildings and tools, but also housing as they used to be. Can get into the windmill and see how it worked. Can visit the houses and see how people used to live. You can enter with your pet, as it is a pet friendly museum. You can spend easily few hours there visiting the museum as it is placed on a vast land, count at least 4-5 hours to visit the whole site. I recommend it for a piece of history but also for a relaxing walk in different zones, forest, along the lake, plane fields, along a spring. Prices are reasonable.

Amazing and super interesting place, totally worth visiting. It's a huge park, perfectly maintained. Parking is free but in busy days it would be difficult to find a spot. In the park, you will find plenty of shadow in hot summer days. There are a lot of rest areas, and wonderful kids playing area.

Amazing— The word “ASTRA” is significant in Romania because it refers to a historic cultural association and some major heritage institutions central to Romanian national identity and Transylvanian history. Cultural Association and National Awakening ASTRA (Asociația Transilvană pentru Literatura Română și Cultura Poporului Român) was founded in 1861 in Sibiu, Transylvania, as a society dedicated to promoting Romanian literature, education, and culture during the Austro-Hungarian rule. ASTRA played a vital role in the Romanian national awakening by supporting schools, libraries, publications, and scholarly gatherings focused on Romanian heritage. Its efforts were instrumental in boosting Romanian consciousness, particularly among Transylvanian Romanians who faced assimilation pressures.

I absolutely loved this place and enjoyed being there. I was on an organized tour, so with the free time given, I was only able to explore half of it so I explored the older section. There is a magnificent delta and you see different architecture representing different places in Romania. I was there about an hour. Definitely not enough time. There was enough english to understand what you were looking at. There was lots of modern wooden art everywhere and a huge gift shop. I wish I had the time to just sit and enjoy the fall colors and wild life playing on the lake.

This is a Must to do place if you are travelling in Sibiu region. The museum is so rich in its history and depicts so nicely the traditional life of Romanian people in the past. During our visit there was even a national Olympiad of Romanian culture happening in this place, which allowed us to meet people from all around the region of Romania. One thing which united all of them were there beautiful dresses, beautiful smiles and warm hearts.

Great collection of traditional buildings from all around Romania! Our advice would be to have life actors who would be representatives of certain time period, talk about crafts and introduce visitors to past lifestyle. That way it would be more interactive, interesting and educational.

The Fortified Church of Biertan

Mentioned on

Lutheran church
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the heart of Transylvania, the Fortified Church of Biertan is a stunning example of late Gothic architecture dating back to 1522. This UNESCO World Heritage site boasts impressive defensive walls and towers that once made it unconquerable. Inside, visitors can admire Renaissance art and an ornate sacristy lock with 15 bolts that can be simultaneously activated. The church also has a unique Prison Tower where couples seeking divorce were held for two weeks in an attempt to reconcile.
The fortified church is located in a traditional Transylvanian village, with an amazing view over the surrounding hills. The visit starts with a climb through the covered staircase. Once you reach the top of the stairs you can walk around the fortifications and the towers and also you can visit the church. Inside we found a lovely lady, which gave a very good overview of the history of this place and also she shared some interesting stories about it.
Viorel I — Google review
The church is on a hill with walls and tower. From the outside, it looks very modest. But from the inside you could see a beautiful altar, orgel and paintings. The ticket can be bought at the small bookshop at the entrance. Then, you climb the roofed stairs up to the church. The little infamous house for couples is located at the back of the church. The story goes, in the past couples before getting a divorce, would be "locked up" there, where they should spend time together in the small room. At some point, many of the couples were said to stay together.
Deepblue S — Google review
Amazing place. The walls around the church, the courtyard and the church is fascinating. Not to mentions the craftsmanship of the lock on one of the doors. The place is still waiting for a big renovation, but it's still well worth a visit.
Musulin P — Google review
It's nice, you can pay by card but the price is high considering what it offers.
Acoran R — Google review
Worth the trip! I visited the Biertan fortified church and was lucky enough to have the place almost to myself This 15th-century Transylvanian gem is perched on a hill, surrounded by not one, not two, but three defensive walls (clearly, they took "do not disturb" very seriously back then) Fun fact: they even had a "marital prison" to help couples reconcile 😂 Entrance Fee: 20 lei (updated 08.05.2025)

Absolutely loved this incredible place that truly deserves to be better known. Murals on either side of the main church entrance would be worth making the trip on their own, but the whole complex is stunning. It exceeded my expectations by far. A gorgeous very peaceful spot in the countryside.

The brilliance of Brancovan art reached a new climax with this monastery which was meant to host for eternity the body of Golden Prince Constantin Brancovan. The complex features of the compound, the excellence of the paintings, the richness of the motives and the importance of the site historically was the green cart for adding it to UNESCO.

Sights & Landmarks
Cozia Monastery, established in 1387 and situated on the banks of Olt River, boasts beautiful frescoes and a serene ambiance. The historical location offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, providing visitors with a peaceful experience that allows for introspection and self-connection. This place exudes tranquility and calmness, making it an ideal destination for those seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The ancient church and monastery were located right at the main road. It is so easy to find. It's a beautiful church, which wasn't so big. Inside, you aren't allowed to take pictures. But that should be fine and respected. All the inside walls and ceiling were covered with paintings. The atmosphere was serene and peaceful. There's a small museum at the back of the church along with a shop for religious articles. Toilet was available across the road. You should go out of the monastery complex and cross the road. It was easy to do as there was a crossing, and despite the busy traffic at the weekend (Sunday), cars would stop whenever people want to cross. The paid toilet (it's cheap) was clean, though you could smell something in the air. When you visit the monastery, go and check some local sellers selling local honey or cooking wooden utensils. Buying something from them could really support the locals. The prices were okay, not expensive. We got 500gr honey for 30 lei in May 2025.

If you are looking for inner peace and a great place to play and learn about history, then you should definitely visit this monastery. I feel for me when I pray here, light candles, donate, I feel all my problems are going away and I’m blessed again with beautiful things. Highly recommend people to go as is very accessible from the main road.

Pretty monastery in a beautiful area with a river and the mountains behind. The town seemed very busy with tourists but the monastery itself was very peaceful and there was a lot of parking nearby. Take time to enjoy the fascinating murals: those outside at the entrance especially, but also those inside, but be aware that photography is not allowed. For me, those murals were the highlight of my visit. There's also a small museum and everything is free to enter. Good views of the dam and the mountains from the back windows. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area, but I'm not sure it's worth a long drive to see if you've been to other monasteries.

A lovely monastery founded in 1386 and still a monastery. Consequently there is much of Romanian history documented in the wall paintings of the chapel. The surrounding gardens are immaculately maintained. Easy place to find as it is next to the main road and consequently many people will be there to pay their respects and say a prayer for loved ones. Take time out to stop and visit.

During winter, the lake becomes the source for crafting Eastern Europe's first-ever ice hotel. This unique destination also features chalet restaurants and serves as a scenic attraction along the Transfagarasan road.
Amazing place and views. We got there by car bur keep in mind that those who suffer from motion sickness may get dizzy. On the way we met 2 small bears.

This place is a shame. A stunning natural lake has been turned into a dirty, chaotic bazaar. Stalls, smoke, garbage, and noise everywhere. No respect for nature, no organization. Authorities are asleep while one of Romania’s most beautiful treasures is being destroyed in front of everyone.

If you can, take the cable car to the top. The views are incredible and well worth the cost (about US$12 each way).

This is definitely worth the drive, absolutely beautiful views and very fun roads to drive if you are a car enthusiast. I recommend driving it in the morning during the summer if you want to have fun on the roads with minimal traffic.

2 parking lots but one was 60 lei and the other one 20 lei. So keep your eyes open. Otherwise cool destination with great views of the mountains. If you drive from the Bucharest side of the mountain you are able to see lots of bears who are friendly but there for free snacks. Do not offer them food though 🙂
Katre K — Google review
If you can and you have time, I'd recommend you to leave your car at the bottom of the most curvy part of Transfagarasan road and hike the trail that goes to Balea lake passing through Balea cascade. It's about 10 km climb of about 875 m of positive elevation gain. The path is amazing, and the cascade an spectacle, but be aware cause you cand meet some bears during the way. The lake is the final prize and it won't dissapoint you. At the summit there are a lot of tents and stalls where they make some delicious typical cake with the shape of a roll called "Kurtos".

Poenari Citadel, also known as Poenari Castle, is a historic fortress located in Romania. Positioned at the beginning of the Transfagarasan highway, this castle offers a glimpse into centuries-old history and provides stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The citadel was once a formidable stronghold guarding a crucial pass between Wallachia and Transylvania.
It's been a dream come true to see this place in life. And whilst I know it is just a heap of stones and some semi-conserved walls... it was still a joy. The walk up is not for the faint of heart but the views from the top are spectacular. Be aware that they have a timing schedule for entering the site and the last visits are scheduled at 15h00. Luckily we arrived just in time. Make sure to take water with you too, and maybe a sweat towel as it was sweltering hot and the air in the forest is pretty still.
Chris B — Google review
Beautiful place.. Need to hike about 1400 stairs to reach the castle but the view is so beautiful. Entrance fee of 30 lei pp is very fair and personnel nice and polite.
Alexander P — Google review
You will climb 1,476 stairs to get to the top of the fortress. It's absolutely worth it. I am a chronic pain patient and managed to reach the top with the help of a walking stick & a prayer in one hour. There are benches for breaks along the way. A must do for any fan of Vlad the Impaler- the inspiration for Dracula.
B M — Google review
A quite tiring journey up the 1480 steps but I think the view is worth it. There are only 4 times where you can enter (9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00) and you can buy the tickets near the very end. There are electrical fences on both sides of the path to keep wild animals at bay.
Cosmy — Google review
Really cool fitness test!! 😆 I kept the pace for the fam (1 dad, 1-13yo, and 1-7yo, to try and get there between 15-20min. It was a fun climb to a place that has history with the likes of Vlad the Impaler although it would be great if there was more history given as the signs that are there seem repetitive and don't offer much information. The views are captivating on either side, but keep in mind the ruins are small. It is true as others have said that they have timed entry, but you purchase your entrance at the top of stairs.
Marie L — Google review
1480 steps can be a lot for some people, take your time, even if it takes you a few hours to get up as the view is spectacular. This was worth travelling from the UK to Romania to see, breathtaking 😍
Mr H — Google review
1480 steps and I'm not young, but not old either. I was afraid I was not going to make it to the top, but I did. The path is graduated and has plenty of benches to rest. Bring plenty of water! Interesting visit, nice view. One of many stops on our Dracula tour (Vlad the Impaler).
Suzette V — Google review
The citadel is newly renovated. There are electric fences so that the wild animals to not approach. There are 1480 stairs in total but after you manage to arrive and you see the panoramic view from there, you forget that the stairs need to be climbed down as well. The payment can be made cash or card. Really cool Citadel.

The Curtea de Argeș Monastery is a 16th-century Romanian Orthodox cathedral dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. It holds numerous early icons, religious artworks, and crypts. The monastery was once the first capital of Wallachia and features essential Byzantine edifices, including the Royal Church, a 14th-century UNESCO-listed monument.
A beautiful monastery and church in the center of a peaceful park. The church exterior and some of the interior is undergoing renovations but the part you can view is stunning. This is also where the Royal family of Romania is buried.

Zarko M — Google review
It's an unforgettable experience to visit this monastery, unique in its own right and steeped in a remarkable folk legend. The presence of royal tombs there also gives the place immense significance.
Nicolae N — Google review
Curtea de Arges Monastery is one of Romania’s most iconic and historically significant monasteries. The monastery was commissioned by Neagoe Basarab, Voivode of Wallachia, and built between 1512 and 1517. Neagoe wanted a church unlike any other, combining architectural elegance, Byzantine inspiration, and local craftsmanship. The monastery quickly became a center of spiritual and cultural life in Wallachia. One of the most famous stories associated with the monastery is the legend of Mesterul Manole, the master builder. According to the legend, Manole and his team could not complete the monastery’s roof, and a supernatural force kept causing it to collapse. A voice instructed him that the walls would only stand if he sacrificed his wife by immuring her in the structure. After reluctantly following this, the construction succeeded. The legend continues that after finishing the monastery, Manole tried to escape by jumping off the roof using wings he had made, but he tragically fell to his death. This story is celebrated in Romanian folklore and poetry as a symbol of sacrifice and devotion. Inside, the monastery holds the tombs of its founders, Neagoe Basarab and his wife, along with their daughter. Later, it became the burial place for Romanian royalty, including King Carol I, Queen Elisabeth, King Ferdinand, Queen Marie, and the last monarchs, King Mihai I and Queen Ana. Architecturally, the church is known for its intricate stone carvings, Byzantine-style frescoes, and a legendary church roof that inspired stories and poems. The combination of legend, history, and art makes it a unique cultural and religious monument. Unfortunately, when I visited, the monastery was closed as it is currently undergoing renovation, but it remains a must-see if you are in the area — both for its historical significance and the fascinating legends that surround it.

Beautiful monastery that holds 4 royal graves. The paintings on walls are divine. I was lucky enough to attend the Sunday service. Area has ample of parking as well as toilet on site charging 1 lei which is fair charge. Toilets are very clean and tidy.
Gersina C — Google review
The exterior was under renovation when I visited, but it is still absolutely stunning! Peaceful and beautiful inside, it houses the beautiful grave ledger stones of King Carol I and Elisabeth as well as an exquisite book of writings of Elisabeth.
Tammy H — Google review
The church is currently undergoing complete renovation, so a visit is not really recommended at the moment, but there is a beautiful park around it and also outbuildings that are nice to look at.
Olivier R — Google review
Is a nice monastery to visit considering it is a 500+ years old building. The legend of Manole and Ana also makes it different to other churches and worship places, not to forget that 2 of the 4 Romanian kings are buried there. A 30-60minutes stop for a piece of Romanian history and culture sure make it worth. And a prayer to God Almighty would sure make it more meaningful.

Visitors to this restored 15th-century military fort can climb the tower's 122 steps for city views.
The complex is truly amazing! There is some more work to do, but the quiet vibes, the view from the tower on the top, the paintings inside the church, the walk on the bridge along the architecture, and the small museum are an awe! People who like history and Gothic things should totally give this place a try. It takes 20 lei for the entrance fee (adult), and you get to climb up to the tower to appreciate the work during Dracula's reign. 😀

The caves are amazing, and very cold. The ruins are super interesting. Visit on of Dracula's homes. How many can say they've seen it? The entrance see if 15RON, not too expensive for how much history this place holds. Take the kids too.

We passed by Târgoviște and the Tower on the way back home from Bucharest on Monday. It was supposed to be closed, but parking was readily available and free on the street, so we gave it a shot and surprisingly it was open. Tickets were 15RON per person, and we spent about an hour there. The tower was in great condition, and there was a little museum with written works from 100s of years ago that showcased the evolution of the Romanian language. Bathrooms were super clean too. Nice quiet historical place. Cheap tickets, easy parking. Great place to visit during a road trip break.

By far the most interesting object for visitors inside the Royal complex. The name of the tower in translation means "Sunset tower". This imposing structure was built during the time of Vlad Dracul, the father of the famous Vlad Tepes, also known as Dracula(thanks to the famous Bram Soker novel). The function of the tower evolved from that of a bell tower in the beginning of 15th century, to that of a watchtower, refuge and defence tower during the 15th-16th centuries and the to that of a clock tower in the 17th century.

The tower itself looks really good as it has been renovated, even though it’s not that tall you can see the whole city from it’s top. The park surrounding it is really beautiful. If you have small children you can take them to the city’s zoo which is a 5 minute walk from the tower.
