Military Marine Museum

Museums
The Military Marine Museum is a vast indoor and outdoor venue that showcases historical sailing vessels, cannons, and other military artillery. The museum includes exhibits on the Canakkale war, Cimenlik Castle, and the Nusret Mine Ship. While admission for students is free, adults must pay 13 Liras to enter. Visitors can expect to spend around two hours exploring the fascinating displays inside the museum.
This afternoon we wandered around the city and visited Çimenlik Castle (built 1462). Over the centuries it has been one of two twin fortresses that protect the narrows of the Dardanelles. It was last used as a strategic defence position in WWI and is now a museum. It gave an account of WWI from the Turks perspective.
Norm P — Google review
The first thing to know about this museum is that the price at the gate is higher than what is posted on the official website. The website says that the entrance fee is 90 Turkish lira, but upon arrival we were informed that the price was 400 Turkish lira. We were told that we could only pay with a Turkish bank card or with cash. We were surprised and dismayed at the price difference between what was officially posted on the website and what the guards insisted that we pay at the gate. The next thing to know is that the bathroom is located outside of the museum near the cafe. There is no bathroom once you pass through the entry gates. This museum is comprised of both indoor and outdoor exhibits. You will be walking outside so plan to dress appropriately for the weather on the day of your visit. There are steps to navigate to get to the inside parts of the museum. We saw a couple struggling to get a baby stroller down the stone steps, which were uneven. This could be a difficult place to get through if you have physical mobility limitations or if you have a baby stroller. This was an interesting place to visit, but we left disappointed about the discrepancy in the listed entrance fee and what was posted on the official website. It felt like we did not get value for the money we paid.
Sarah E — Google review
Great place to visit in Çanakkale. The entrance fee is 400 TL for adults and 200 for students, but it's worth every penny. With the ticket you can visit both a medieval fortress, a submarine 😱, and a ship that was planting mines in WWI. Getting inside a real submarine is quite a rare experience and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Serban V — Google review
What a perfect conservation of the history. Beautifle expositions and reallistic videos. Strongly recommend to visit this museum. It is full with history about the Ottoman empire and Turkiye Republic. It is a worth to visit it.
Peyo H — Google review
Excellent museum with a rich collection. Çimenlik Kalesi that hosts the museum is historically remarkable and impressive. The visit takes about 3 hours including the S338 submarine and Nusret minelayer.
Deniz S — Google review
Nice castle, surrounded by old armaments with a lot of history, specialty form the WW1 and the Galipoli battle, You can visita a first war germany submarine, and old ship and the museum itself, full of history about the important battle.
David G — Google review
The museum is inside the Ottoman castle, Çimenlik Kalesi, which used to be our destination to spend time by the seaside sitting on a bench in the good old days. Now you get access only by buying a ticket, which is sad. Yet inside the castle, they created a great atmosphere of memories of Canakkale Battle. Inside the castle, you may spend some relaxing time even though you don't like the war stuff, because the castle is really beautiful under the dim yellow light.
Elif S — Google review
We paid 200tl even with museum cards and residence permits. It worth it. It’s not only open air area, you also can go to the castle and learn about its history. However, it’s impossible to go to the top of the castle

Gallipoli Peninsula Historical National Park

Mentioned on

Sights & Landmarks
Gallipoli Peninsula Historical National Park is a significant site that holds the history of the Gallipoli campaign during World War I. This location is renowned for its unconventional warfare and symbolizes valiant efforts and mutual respect between nations. Visiting this park offers an opportunity to delve into the historical impact of the war and pay homage to the bravery and patriotism displayed by those involved.
Incredibly moving and emotional place for Aussies to visit. I shed a few tears as the sad loss of life of all the young men that died here. Such a respectful place and tribute to our anzacs, the Turks and French and British and even Indians who gave their life in these battles. A must see for Aussies

Just FYI! These pictures are from the War Museum, which is 4 MINS driving from this specific location, don’t get confused! Not the best indicated, a bit confusing and less information than expected. If you drive to this specific location/building, you will not be able to enter. To go to the War Museum drive further in that road and then turn to the right when you see it indicated.
Andrea N — Google review
Beautiful and moving site which gives insight into the history surrounding the founding of the Turkish Republic. One of the most impactful locations on the Gallipoli peninsula.
Janet R — Google review
The size of this park in terms of territory and how the people of Turkey have kept history alive is truly impressive. Moreover, the cleanliness and maintenance of all monuments deserves admiration. Can really meet global criteria. It’s definitely worth the visit but give yourself at least two or three days if you want to see everything. Also beware of turtles! 🐢☺️
Evina M — Google review
Great time spent here. Moment of reflection for the legendaries, braveries and patriotism of a people led by the strong faith in their heart and readiness to sacrifice their lives and souls for the future of only their people but all the marginalised and underprivileged people of the world. This peninsula witnessed a war where all the odds were against the Turks but their faith and bravery won them a legend unequalled anywhere in the history of the world.
Muhammed A — Google review
It is a great location in the history of WW1 and Turkish history as well. It can be done on a single day from Istanbul. The presence of a good guide I think is essential, since it is difficult to be appraised of the entire history of events or their significance.
Alex F — Google review
I lived in Australia and New Zealand for a few years and Gallipoli is almost a founding myth in those respective countries. It was fascinating to come here and see the place and battle(s) I heard so much about. What was really interesting was also to see it from Ottoman/Turkish perspective. What's amazing about the whole complex is how the winning side the Turks have almost dedicated it to losing side renaming the landing area to Anzac cove etc. I can't think of anywhere else where such a thing has happened. I did a tour which you almost have to do. It's a big site so walking and local buses are not a realistic prospect. It was really hot so bring water and sunscreen but most of all if you have heard of Gallipoli and have any interest in it absolutely worth a visit.
Robert C — Google review
The trip of my life! I wanted to visit the gallipoli peninsula all my life. Now that I got here and I attended a tour program I get to learn all that I wanted to learn first handedly. The weather is good but could be better. So maybe later in May or even June is better timing for the Gallipoli visit. The tour costs only ₺70 per person lunch included.

Lighthouse of Alexandroupoli

Mentioned on

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
The Lighthouse of Alexandroupoli, a tall and striking white beacon with a fountain at its base, is a city landmark constructed by the French in 1880. It stands on the picturesque promenade and is considered to be a favorite place for leisurely walks. The lighthouse resembles a solid stone tower in the form of a cylinder and is set against the backdrop of the bright blue sea.
A beautiful place with a bike path and a very good view. The lighthouse continues to operate today. It is one of the tallest lighthouses in Greece, since its height reaches 18 meters, it has 98 internal steps that lead to the lamp chamber while the upper part of it is laminated with10 rows of glass panes. Its lighting visibility is possible at a distance of 24 nautical miles from the coast (about 44km)
Alkiviadis F — Google review
Wide open area to view the beach, small carnival area just below, unsure of its opening times, and plenty of spots to sit.
Austin B — Google review
The view is amazing overlooking the sea from a high place. The area has several cafes, markets, and a wonderful collection of shopping options.
Ahmed A — Google review
I was disappointed that the fountain stopped too early before I could take picture. But it’s a nice place ☺️

Exciting place to wait. View is amazing on the sunrise

There is a very wide sidewalk along the sea, which is a few kilometers long. It is full of tables from restaurants and coffee shops, it has much space for cycling or walking. The view is amazing, especially at sunset. Visit TripAdvisor to find the best restaurants, which have both greek and eastern cuisine.

Ancient City of Troy

Mentioned on
6 lists
Historical place
Sights & Landmarks
The Ancient City of Troy is a significant historical site, known for its scattered stone ruins and a replica Trojan horse. It offers visitors an immersive experience, complete with informative displays that provide insight into the city's history and period. The surroundings are tranquil, with cheerful birdsong and playful squirrels adding to the ambiance. The ancient stones that make up the ruins are an impressive sight and should not be missed by anyone in the area.
Modern museum well worth visiting to understand context of history, archeology, and many artefacts (others in Istanbul museum). Site itself has well signed walkways and information boards, though hard to grasp the differing levels and which parts were extant together - so second visit to museum would be good if with own transport. Site has cafe, but take water and hat for open walks. Good view of coast which has receded significantly since city founded.
Jeff S — Google review
This UNESCO world heritage archaeological site is open to public and is setting for Greek mythology of the Trojan war. Excavation started in 1871 and you can see lot of ruins. If lucky you can see archaeological work in progress at sections of the site. Boardwalk access everywhere so makes walking easier but you need hat, sunscreen and comfy walk shoes. Have to pay fee to enter. At entrance there is replica of Trojan Horse. Local village goat seen wandering about ruins
S V — Google review
Little remains of the actual buildings, but the historical and cultural significance of the location as well as the events that took place around it make up for the lack of structural integrity. Perhaps the most impressive is the entrance ramp which has been preserved in astonishingly solid shape. Also, for this who read and adore the Illiad, one can literally sense the spirit of the ancient battles amidst the ruins. With a hit of imagination, you can picture Agamemnon's army spread out across the surrounding plain as they plan and wage the attack on Troy.
Muris D — Google review
I enjoyed Troy - but I only recommend going if you have an interest in the history and myths of Troy. The archaeological site itself is not the most impressive I’ve seen and it costs €27. It also does not take very long to explore. An hour is enough. For anyone trying to get the public mini bus there - as of writing this it goes from under the bridge if you search Troy Dolmus on google maps. It costs 100 lira and took about 45 minutes each way.
Martha M — Google review
It was an honour to visit such an agent and historic place of a people and culture from so long ago. I really wished there were more bi-lingual translations of the text surrounding the site. Also better sign posting as I’m more of a visual person it was hard to see which versions of the city were specific to the corners of the site that we walked. The Trojan horse it self looked very commercial and ‘overly designed’ considering it was placed in the enter square of the old city.
Trishoya G — Google review
Was quite cool. But… if you been to Roma. It’s a bit cliche. But this is 3000 BC. Still worth to go if you are not tired of 11+ hours same stay drive in the car. So simple high meat Shell gasoline test area foods. Not for foodies!
Derek S — Google review
Where myth whispers through the wind — Troy, the city of nine lives. Each layer beneath my feet tells a story: the earliest settlers of 3000 BCE, the rise and fall of kingdoms, the fire and rebuilding of Troy VI and VII, and finally, the Roman Troy IX in 1st century A.D., when the city was reborn in marble and empire’s glory. Here, time folds into legend — the same ground that stirred Homer’s imagination as he sang of Achilles’ rage, Hector’s courage, and the fate sealed by a wooden horse. The ruins stand silent, yet the echoes of the Iliad still ride the breeze from Çanakkale’s shores. It’s a humbling walk through millennia — from myth to memory, from poetry to stone. #Troy #Çanakkale #Homer #Iliad #AncientTroy #RomanTroy #HistoryAndMyth #TurkeyTravel
Dipak O — Google review
Another historical place in western Turkey. Walk through the ruins of this well known ancient city. You can barely imagine how it should have looked in the past times. In the far you can see the Dardanelles and can imagine the tale of Homers Iliad. Of course you will find the troyan horse. There is another horse in Canakkale, which is the original requisite from the movie 'Troy'.

Paradise Beach

Mentioned on
42 lists
Beach
Outdoor Activities
Paradise Beach, located near the settlement of Koinyra on the island of Thassos, is a wide sandy beach with clear and shallow waters. It offers amenities such as a beach bar, sun loungers, umbrellas for rent, and a volleyball court. The idyllic location features crystal-clear waters and dense vegetation that adds to its beauty. Access to the beach is easy despite being about 23 kilometers away from Limenas.
Paradise Beach really lives up to its name. I went there as part of a boat tour and it was one of the best spots we visited. The water was crystal clear and you could see everything, even from above. There were so many colorful fish swimming around and it felt like an aquarium in real life. A bit further out from the beach we even saw dolphins swimming. That moment was just magical. If you like snorkeling or diving this place is perfect. You can explore so much underwater and it is honestly one of the best things to do there. The beach itself is clean, peaceful and really beautiful. But if you go in the middle of summer just be prepared for a lot of tourists. It can be hard to find a free spot to sit and sometimes you have to pay for sunbeds and umbrellas. So it is a good idea to bring your own umbrella and chairs if you want to stay comfortable. I would totally recommend going especially if you are doing a boat tour around the island.
Möchte A — Google review
A beautiful beach worth a visit. There are 2 cafes on it, and in between there are places for tourists who don't want to be in those cafes. The view is beautiful, the water is warm and not too windy, a real paradise. Only the approach to the beach is terrible, if you don't have a good car, be careful! For this reason, I give a rating of 4.
Realist A — Google review
Love this beach. It is in a beautiful setting and is reasonably accessible. It’s especially accommodating and safe for children as it is shallow in many parts. Would highly recommend to visit it.
Alan L — Google review
Nice beach with soft sand and shallow water. There are free areas where you can sit, parking lots and beach bars where you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas as well. After 11:00 it gets pretty crowded.
Christian B — Google review
Parking - many people park on the main road, however when I drove all the way down to the parking next the beach there were 2 parking spaces free. The road down to the beach it steep and sandy/dusty. There is a chance the on the way back some cars might get stuck towards the end. Nature - the sand is very fine, however the beach is not well cleaned. Many sticks, cigarettes, and small pieces of rubbish in the sand. I think that the two beach bars should take better care on the condition of the beach. Beach bars- there are two beach bars. A set of 2 sunbeds and 1 umbrella costs 30 euros and includes 1 drink. At the area of the bars ice bags are not allowed. Shower is ONLY allowed for the people who are paying fot umbrella set. There is no free shower, which is very dissapointing... Sea - the water is clean. The depth is shallow until further in the sea. It is suitable for small children. Overall, it is loud and crowded beach, because of its popularity. Furthermore , because of the policy the the two beach bars, people who are not using the sunbeds feel unwanted on the beach.
Pavel D — Google review
Best beach on Thassos. It has enough space for everyone, even for those who bring their own umbrellas and chairs. It has a big parking area few minutes away from the beach.
Ana R — Google review
My favorite beach in Thassos! Surrounded by greenery, with crystal-clear water and fine sand, it’s simply beautiful. There’s free parking, though the road leading to it isn’t the best – but everything else more than makes up for it. The beach has a spacious free zone and two bars/restaurants. We highly recommend Nikos Bar & Grill.
Anna D — Google review
As the name suggests... Paradise Beach is beautiful. We stopped at Nik's Grill and Bar for some drinks. The places has EUR30 per set loungers and umbrellas on offer which also includes 2 drinks. They look good quality ans extremely comfortable. Lots and LOTS of wasps (like everywhere on the island). The view and scenery is lovely as the name of the beach would suggest. The road down isn't great, in fact hire cars aren't allowed down it, so it's a bit of a walk from the main road.

Aliki Beach, nestled near the remnants of ancient ruins on Thasos, Greece, is a true gem that offers a little bit of everything for beach lovers. This stunning spot features soft sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters that are always calm, making it perfect for swimming. The beach is adorned with shady trees and equipped with umbrellas and tavernas where you can savor local delicacies while soaking up the sun. Its inviting atmosphere attracts visitors looking to relax in nature's embrace.
Alyki Beach is a peaceful and beautiful spot — no waves, calm water, and perfect for swimming. There are just a few places to sit, so it's best to come early. On the left side of the beach, there’s a scenic trail with breathtaking views that’s definitely worth exploring. A quiet gem!
Andrijana A — Google review
The bay itself is beautiful. The beach would be beautiful if it wasn't so ram-packed with beach chairs and umbrellas. You can barely move. Also big boats come in and dump 100s of passengers into the bay. Taverna Leonidas is a lovely place to sit and enjoy lunch, and the archaeological site of Aliki is right next to the beach and worth a visit. Therefore I'd visit the beach if I were visiting the archaeological site, but wouldn't drive here just for the beach - there are better. Parking is up on the main road. There's a quieter beach behind on the others side of the peninsula, 2 min walk from here.
D — Google review
Such a beautiful beach! In the early morning (9 AM) it is not crowded, there is plenty of space where you can choose from. We chose a set of sunbeds which were 20€ per set, without anything included. But the staff there (a lady and a man) are very friendly, attentive. We ordered 2 coffees and a water and they were brought in less than 5 minutes. There are no waves, the water is clear and lean, perfect for kids and families. There are parking spaces along the main road, a couple of minutes apart from the beach.
Cristina B — Google review
To crowdedness for our taste. But other than that, water was perfect until tourist boats came with their garbage which ended up in water. You should definitely come early here in order to park your car. This is a beach for families with children, so if you are not fond of that, avoid it.
Natasa R — Google review
It has nice views but the space is not well maintained, i came back after 2 years and some informative panels are destroyed and vegetation can be irrigated maybe.
AT0M — Google review
We visited Aliki Beach and chose to stay at the middle beach bar with the brown sunbeds. The price for two sunbeds and an umbrella is €20 , this is only for the sunbeds, and anything you order from the bar is not included in this price. The staff makes sure to inform you about this right from the beginning. The prices are very reasonable for a beach bar. Everything was great the staff were friendly, polite, very well organized, and they also speak English very well, which makes communication easy and pleasant. We definitely plan to return!
Eleni K — Google review
It is a wonderful beach with crystal clear water. There are many facilities in the beach with different prices, I recommend the place with the beige sunbeds ( the one next to the brown sunbeds). It had a minimum consumption amount of 30 euros for 2 sunbeds and an umbrella without extra fees so it was great.
Liva Ç — Google review
Excellent for kids, but expensive. First and second rows of sunbeads are minimum consumption 70eur in taverna, other rows were from 50eur, and it is always full. You need to park on the street, and there are a lot of car parks.

Bodies of Water
Giola Lagoon is a stunning natural pool nestled within rocky seaside cliffs on the remote island of Thassos. Accessible by a dirt road or hike, this unique monument of nature offers a serene and beautiful experience. Despite being full of sea urchins, the lagoon's still waters and clear ambiance make it a must-see destination on the island. Visitors can expect to encounter goat herds in the area, adding to the overall charm of the experience.
Amazing! I recommend coming with sneakers or good shoes because the terrain is a bit difficult to climb. We were there about 9:35 and it was empty but it got more crowded soon. The water is amazing and even if you’re not so good at swimming, this pool is so salty and it keeps you floating. Definitely recommend swimming in it, a unique experience!
Amina P — Google review
It is worth coming here for a couple of hours- for some jumping and snorkeling near by is simply beautiful. Even though it was full of people there was room for everyone. Also jumping can be down at different heights so you can overcome your fears and keep developing 🚀
Moni Z — Google review
A great spot for beautiful photos. We visited in the second half of September. Parking near the lagoon costs 4 euros, but you can park for free a little earlier. It's still an 8-minute walk down. The descent is not easy for those 60+. There are plenty of smooth rocks there, perfect for sunbathing.
Elenchik K — Google review
Amazing natural pool with a breathtaking view. It is easy to get in the lagoon. It is a bit difficult to get out, but with a little help it is managable. Not many tourists get inside which is good because it keeps the water clean. Don't bring umbrellas and sea-chairs because there is no place to put them. The area is rocky. Nobody stays for long time because it isn't a beach. I take a star down because THERE is a road to get close to the lagoon but the "bussinessman" who bought the area have closed the road only to get through their taverns and their coffee shops to spend your money. So you have to walk down a 20-minute road. There are two options. Follow the yellow sign "Giola" or you can follow the blue sign "Giola vibes". Both ways get you to the lagoon. You just pass through the tavern or the coffee shop. Don't park in the parking area because it is not free. You can park for free anywhere among the olive trees. TIP from a local: Don't park on the cement street because the police checks the area every 2 hours and gets the car plates if you have parked on the cement street.
Ellh C — Google review
I recommend going at a time when there aren't many people around and the weather isn't too hot. It's worth seeing, and swimming there is a wonderful experience, but only under the conditions I mentioned.
Can E — Google review
The lagoon is amazing and the view .. wow But the way to the lagoon is way too far and hard 🤣 make sure you have appropriate shoes for water and also sneakers to arrive there, no sleepers!!
Cristina O — Google review
The visit was wonderful and worth coming. Its very fun for jumping but I give an advice and go there early. The ticket for the parking was 4 euros for 2 hours. But it's a little hard to get there by feet

Fortress
Sights & Landmarks
Perched on the peninsula of Panagia, Kavala Fortress is a 15th-century stronghold that offers breathtaking panoramic views and a glimpse into the city's rich history. The fortress has been rebuilt and fortified multiple times throughout history, with its current form reflecting Ottoman reconstruction in 1425. As you explore the cobblestone streets within the fortress, you'll encounter a blend of Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern influences that create a captivating atmosphere.
We went there today with the family. We parked under the fortress and then walked up. The place is very beautiful. There is a restaurant right at the entrance. I think you need about one hour. The views were amazing – really worth it.

Very nicely kept. Views from the top of the tower are amazing and this justifies the very steep climb you have to take in order to get to the fortress. But don't skip climbing the tower stairs as it's not nearly the same view from the walls...
Milica K — Google review
It's worth it for the view, although you can see the same view from any high place in the city. The ticket is 5€ per person, which I think is a bit much for one climb up the stairs to the top. Be careful with the stairs, they are steep and narrow, also watch your head (I say this from experience) and if you have claustrophobia don't go in!
V K — Google review
This is one of the city's landmarks that can be seen from everywhere. It is a little difficult to access, due to the small streets and parking restrictions, which is a discomfort for tourists and a great relief after the introduction of the new rules for local citizens. So, it will take you between 10 and 20 minutes of walking and climbing, depending on your pace, until you reach the fortress. There is discomfort when it is a very hot day. Everything else is great. You can get a ticket and enter to learn more about the history and the city. As well as see panoramic views that are revealed from the fortress. There is also a cafe where you can rest and refresh yourself. I recommend visiting it, especially if you are interested in history. This is also a good place for children to learn new information and develop their thinking and imagination.

You will have 360 degree view of Kavala city. Entry is 5 € for July’25. Inside of castle, there are not much things to see. Go to tower and the best view is there. Castle is opening at 08:00 which I recommend that time because stairs of tower is quite narrow so that might be trouble if many people there.
Engin A — Google review
Great place and worth the hike up to find it. If you are going solo as I did follow a mixture of google maps but also the local signs, even the ones painted on walls. Following google maps I got to a few dead ends. Entrance costs 4 euro and there is a bar inside! You may need that as I did after the hike up. The Castle itself is interesting but you will have been to many better. The point here is its location at the top and the great views it gives of Kavala. It’s a quiet place with no access for buses full of tourists! The walk down was a lot easier than the walk up and I think in retrospect I should have started from the viaduct from the last arch north to south, or the arch nearest the hill on which is the Fortress.
Richard B — Google review
We enjoyed our visit to the fortress after we found parking. The maps tried to take us up thru very narrow streets which were too narrow for it van . We ended up parking down by the waterfront and walking up because there is no parking at the fortress.

These walls most likely follow the outline of those of ancient Neapolis, as was the name of the city in the Classical era and all the way through the Roman times. Emperor Julian (yes, that one, the one known as the apostate), made some improvements and repairs, as the threat of the barbarian tribes could not be withheld by the defenses along the Danube. Emperor Justinian also included the city in his extensive rebuilding program. So did Romanos Lekapenos, but by this time, the city had been renamed Christopolis. The job must have been a good one, as it was one of the very few fortifications that managed to repel the marauding Catalan Company, even though this occurred 4 centuries after these repairs. Nevertheless, the attack must have taken its toll, as Emperor Andronikos II commissioned repairs shortly afterward. The city held until the late 14th century, when it fell to the Turks, who in turn reconstructed the walls in the early 15th century. Some parts of the outer layers remain, but the citadel is in good condition and has been reconstructed. It offers a wonderful as well as impressive depiction of the fortifications and magnificent viewpoints too. An overall enjoyable experience for all. The only downside is the absence of parking space, but the ascent through the old town has its charm as well.

Archaeological Site of Philippi

Ancient Ruins
The Archaeological Site of Philippi, founded in 356 BC by King Philip II and later expanded by the Romans, is a historical gem located on the ancient trade route between Europe and Asia. The site features remnants of old walls, gates, a Forum, Roman cisterns, temples, and early basilicas dating back to the fifth century. Visitors can also explore the Archaeological Museum of Philippi to see sculptures, coins, jewelry, and mosaics from the site's history.
Expansive area to walk through and explore. Very interesting to see how the city was laid out. Not much shade, so be prepared. A nice restaurant is on site for after you visit.

Visited the ancient ruins while on a pilgrimage tour of Greece. The whole site is massive with ruins dating back to the time of St. Paul the Apostle and from the later Byzantine era. It is highly recommended during the summer to wear a hat, bring sunscreen and an umbrella for shade. Highlights included the amphitheater, Byzantine era basilica, the town square and the location of the prison where Paul and Silas were kept in during their stop over in the city. Next to the entrance is a cafe where you can purchase food and drinks.
Anthony D — Google review
Very fun experience overall. Alot of the places to see were closed off for Saftey, and the museum costs alot - 10 euros each on top of the entrance ticket, despite that, the staff Is very nice, a man gave us a tour around a section of the plot, around a tomb. you get an hour or two of walking around and exploring for ten euros and kids go free. I'd recommend strongly, especially if more things open up

I loved visiting here, especially being a Christian and knowing the history of this town. The excavations are only partially done, but you can still get a real feel of what it must have been like. Such a great experience!

This is very important site for Bible story. There are site of prison of Paul & Silas. This is the place that encounter triggered events that led to Paul and Silas being imprisoned. In Acts 16:16, a young slave girl with a spirit of divination, who was earning her masters a lot of money by fortune-telling, met Paul and Silas as they were going to prayer. In Acts 16:23, after being severely flogged, Paul and Silas were thrown into prison and ordered to be guarded carefully by the jailer. On May 18 of 2025, which we visited, Greece celebrates International Museum Day, when museums and archaeological sites are open for free.

I loved the amphitheatre and it's amazing acoustics! It's insane to experience the "technology" that they had so many years back. We went on our own, so I think we missed a lot of the information, although there were enough signs explaining what you were looking at. The prison of Paul that we were most excited to see, was not much, but it was nice being at the place that he walked and spoke. The price of 10€/person is a bit too much.
Agapi C — Google review
10 euro per person to enter. Worth the excursion. Small village of Krinides nearby for a nice lunch.
Maggie G — Google review
A beautiful and big archaeological site worthy visiting. Admission was about $6 Euro per adult. On the day of our visit happened to be a special holiday in April and admission was free. They have lots of displays and explanation signs along the way. Along a QR code to download for more information. It is a fair big area. Do bring comfortable shoes and sun / wind protections. Water for a hot day. You will also find a prison cell label St. Paul’s prison (as Paul was jailed in Philippi according to the Bible) There are restaurants and facilities in the entrance area you can get food and drinks as well. Museums and shops, etc. Highly recommended!

Very interesting tour - even if you are not so interested in Orthodox and monasteries. You can buy tickets online too, very convenient. There is a cafe inside, where you can get a table on a small terrace ( if you are faster than the rest:)) and enjoy the trip. If you go out from the cafe on the bow of the ship it is beautiful but you can not hear the explanations. Take some cookies with you if you are with kids and try to feed the birds when near the shore - it is a big fun

We bought tickets online for the Blue Lagoon. The boat was comfortable and not too big, there weren't too many people like on other boats, so there was enough space for everyone. The lunch was delicious, served right on the beach. A special thanks to the team, the service was top-notch. Everyone was very friendly, kind, and caring. Highly recommend!

Greece is Bliss! Nirvana and Paradise rolled into one. Mt Athos one day excursion via operator Athos Sea Cruises aboard boat "Captain Fotis" is exceptional for 25-35€ ($30-40). Father/Son Family run business with superb hospitality, customer service, and professional crew. Large Clean, well-maintained ferries with ample room to move around and various seating arrangements. I personally met, chat with at length, and now adore Captain George. Friendly, personable, and loves life to the fullest. Seeing the various monasteries from afar is beautiful and satisfying. They do an excellent program of boarding holy monks and relics to bless those believers of Christianity and Eastern Greek Orthodoxy. You may also purchase a variety of goods such as icons, crosses, incense, olive oils and honey produced by the monks from the Holy Mount Athos. Ouranoupolis is heaven on earth and Drenia/Banana Beach are spiritually uplifting energy healing pools of divine waters. I will return soon and maybe stay forever. Highly recommend!! Eternally grateful and thankful for the blessed experience.

Great cruise, very informative. One star less for the endless amount of talking as everything will be repeated in several languages.

Met all our expectations. Reasonable price for a boat shared with 200 people. Easy to wander across decks for best shots of the Athos scenery, information on monasteries provided in various languages via loudspeakers could be well understood. Monks visit boat for blessings and selling religious items. Relaxed 3 hours despite boat was full, of course nothing intimate or with privacy. Little shop on board.

We had a great experience. In the morning we watched the monasteries from the boat, at about 13h we were at a very nice sandy beach. The lunch was good, then some free time and at about 16:30 we boarded on the boat to go back. It is really worth doing this little trip.

It was a very nice trip. I liked the cruise itself, enjoying the swimming at the banana beach, the lunch was tasty and served quickly. I also liked the live music on board and the staff was very friendly and willing to help. The boat was spacious enough and clean. All perfect.

Petralona Cave

Nature & Parks
Petralona Cave, situated 50 km from Thessaloniki, is a fascinating prehistoric site discovered in 1959. It gained fame in 1960 when the oldest European man's fossilized skull was found there, along with evidence of ancient fire use. The cave features remarkable stalactites and stalagmites that captivate both adults and children. With a length of about 2 km, it offers an exciting excursion suitable for young visitors as well.
Considering that one of the main attractions in the Nea Kallikrateia area is the Petralona cave, we decided to go and visit it. It is located 15 km away from Nea Kallikrateia, about 15-20 minutes by car. Direct access by car is restricted for the last 800-900 meters by a barrier, being directed to a parking lot from where you can take a mini train for 3 euros per person round trip. In the parking lot there are a few souvenir shops, magnets, etc. you know the type. The mini train leaves every 10-15 minutes and covers the distance mentioned above, to the cave area. There is also a terrace here where you can wait for the entrance to the cave. It cost us 10 euros per person for adults, so 20 euros and free for children under 18. The entrance to the cave is only with a guide, on a pre-established route that goes up and down about 350 meters through the cave. The guide provides a series of information in English and much more in Greek and ensures that the group respects the predefined route. The cave, discovered in 1959, is spectacular and offers you an example of what the elements of nature can do over thousands of years. The merit of the Greeks is that they highlighted it by arranging a portion of the cave. You can find more details about the cave online. However, the fact that it seems like a well-planned Greek "business" does not detract from the beauty of the cave and its surroundings

Beautiful and family-friendly cave experience! Petralona Cave was absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit. The temperature inside is a comfortable +17°C all year round, so there’s no need to dress warmly. The entrance fee was €10 for adults, and seniors (65+) paid €5 — we visited in the off-season. Children under 18 enter for free, which was great for us since we had a baby and a 3-year-old with us. The cave itself is relatively small and compact — perfect for kids. The loop path takes around 20 minutes to complete, with many stunning formations to admire. Some parts of the path are a bit narrow, but still manageable. In front of the cave, there’s a kiosk and a picnic/waiting area with an incredible view of the surrounding area and the sea — perfect for watching the sunset! We enjoyed some ice cream and coffee from the kiosk while waiting for our tour to start. You can either take a short walk (about 800m) up to the cave or use the little transfer train from the parking area. The round trip on the train costs €3 per person, and children under 3 go free. We didn’t visit the museum (it requires a separate ticket), but overall, the service was friendly, and the experience was great — highly recommend it, especially for families!

A great change in scenery. It is a great place to take a break on a hot day - other than on a beach or inside. Things go fast even on a busy day and rather affordable (€10 for the cave, €5 for the museum and €3 for the train). Tour is 20 - 30 minutes without guide (for our group). I would recommend the museum first and cave after. Outside view is nice, too. The terrace near the entrance is a nice place to enjoy a drink.

The weather was bad so we decided to visit the caves after looking on google. The car park is a basic dirt road and we did struggle to get parked. Some cute little souvenir shops reasonably priced…again basic but fine. We got the train to the caves which took a couple of minutes and cost a few euros each. Once you are at the top to the entrance of the cave it is quite exposed with a couple of shelters, a coffee shack and reasonably clean toilets. Once we had paid there was a little wait before the last group came out of the cave, around 10 minutes or so. Once we were in the cave we were memorised!! What an amazing place! Really cleverly lit with secure steps throughout. We loved every second of it with such amazing photo opportunities. It was like being in another world. We were encouraged to stay with the group but we wanted to stay longer hehe! We walked back to the car chatting about our amazing experience!

Great fan of stalagtites/stalagmites caves, so we had to visit this one and it is definitely worth the trip. Currently, the entrance fee is 10 Euro (Oct 2025). Since we have been there close to the end of the season our group was comfortably small (I can imagine that in the summertime the visit will be very crowdy and not so quiet and comfortable). There is a parking lot (with some deserted tourist shops close by) and the possibility to be carried the 300 or so meters to the cave by a small train. Otherwise it's a 10 min walk slightly up the hill. After buying the tickets we had to wait a bit, approx. 10-15 min until enough people had gathered for the tour. The cave itself and all the formations were so amazing, I enjoyed it very much. The guide explained everything in greek and english. Whole tour is about 1 km and approx. 30 min. We did not visit the small museum with the bone collections, because we were more interested in the formations, but this would have been possible with a 5-euro fee and approx. 20 min.
DrEnzMon — Google review
This is an incredible cave and there is a great museum on site too. Both have recently reopened after significant renovation. There is s short walk uphill from the car park. Alternatively you can take the land train. There is a coffee shop and toilets outside the cave and also near the car park

A LOT of stuff to uncover. The guide who lead me and my group was very kind. He explained the history behind the cave very well and I was intrigued the entire time. Would recommend visiting if you’re in the Halkidiki area!

By far one of the best in the world, this cave amazes at every step. It’s a hidden gem of Greece and a must-see! A long labyrinth of corridors with awe-inspiring forms will leave you in wonder of the mystery of nature. Park by the shops and walk up the hill or take the noddy train. Reasonably priced tickets, discounts for children and pensioners, and a tour guide included. Thank you for such an amazing experience!

The Museum of Byzantine Civilization in Thessaloniki, Greece is a top destination for those interested in the history and culture of the Byzantine period. The museum's extensive collection covers artifacts and exhibits from the early Christian period to the Ottoman Empire, with a specific focus on the 4th to 15th centuries. Visitors can explore various exhibition halls that are divided into different periods, offering insights into art, religion, and daily life during this influential era.
Wonderful museum! I was lucky and didn’t experience any of the 10 permanent exhibition being temporary closed for a lack of staff. Very organized how you flow from one room to the next, free audio guide which can be downloaded over WiFi and nice staff. Everything you’d expect from a well-kept museum. I came closer to closing, 1 hr is not enough, I think I skipped a room and skimmed over a couple others due to time. The artwork and artifacts are beautiful and for only 8 euros, I think it’s a great deal.
Hak B — Google review
The museum from its exterior looks great. They have captured the Byzantine style of architecture. You see that a lot of work has gone into making this museum. There were a lot of amazing artifact, mosaics, frescos etc….to see. Although I thinkk this museum was lacking on staff. We were even told that because they are understaffed only 4 out of the 12 exhibits were open to the public. The guides in those open rooms were more like guards and were always on their phone. Everything is supposedly digitalized. What’s the point of guides then? Just employ guards. Anyway at least what was open was amazing to see what remains from the Eastern Roman period, but more then half the museum was closed of so it didn’t justify the 8 euros price tag. Visit if it’s fully open.
Filip T — Google review
Small but beautiful museum with a fabulous collection of Byzantine art. The staff are very friendly, and the exhibits are well presented. Be careful around some of the displays though, there are small steps in front and when my daughter accidentally touched it, the alarm went off! The cafeteria and gift shop are currently under renovation, which was a bit disappointing, but overall it was still an awesome experience.
Yao C — Google review
The museum is stunning, both from the outside and the inside. Definitely worth a visit. They have a large collection of Byzantine artifacts. Although I'm not usually a big fan of history, I found this museum genuinely interesting and you can feel how important it is for the Greek people. The ticket costs 8€, while the kids under 18 enter for free. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful, it wasn't overcrowded when we visited, so you can take your time and explore at your own pace. About an hour and a half is enough for the full visit.
Nataša K — Google review
An excellent collection excellently presented within an excellent facility. Middle Ages were not dark in the Eastern Roman Empire, which we call today Byzantium. Paintings, mosaics, decorated pottery, jewelry, and so much more display the light of a civilization whose refugees sparked the Renaissance. Truly, a wonderful experience for those who appreciate history and art. In a country so rich in archeological findings of ages ranging into the greatest depths of antiquity, such exhibits are often unduly overlooked.
George S — Google review
Absolutely worth a visit. I think the ticket was €8, which you certainly can't complain about. It was very quiet when we visited, which probably lent the whole place some serenity. If you are in Thessaloniki and you have an hour or so to spare, I think it would be well spent here.
Per J — Google review
The space is good developed: the halls, the lights, the pieces of mosaic, tombstones, vases, examples of the unique history of Byzantine. If you have a time, it's better to take a guide tour, and not to be lost in the treasure of this museum.

The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is a renowned institution housing an extensive collection of Greek art and artifacts dating up to late antiquity. The museum's central section showcases exhibits from excavations in Thessaloniki and Macedonia, including sculptures, architectural elements from an ancient temple, relics from the palace complex built by Galerius, and gold artifacts from the Archaic and Classical periods.
A rich collection of wonderfully presented items depicting the immense archeological wealth and depth of Greece. In addition to their historical significance, many of the exhibits are spectacular on their own. Masterfully shaped and colored pottery, statues of unmatched artistry, weaponry that displays the military prowess of ancient Greece, gold accessories of impossible craftsmanship that adorned its prominent citizens, and so much more. The facility is also wonderful, clean, with broad corridors and occasional seating, and adequate information concerning the items as well as the age they represent. An overall wonderful experience.

A gem of a place that deals with ancient Greek history and will take up at least three hours to tour depending on how much you want to learn. There is an app one can download and by scanning each exhibit learn its story in more detail than id depicted on the case. Artifacts, jewellery, sarcofagi, tools, weapons, mosaics and many more can be admired. Well worth a visit.

You may feel it's a small museum, but it's not. There is also underground floor. I spent there almost two hours and didn't feel the time passed. Very beautiful and interesting exhibitions, with interesting texts. Especially the gold jewelry collection. Highly recommended! There is also cafe in the small garden. You only need to take care about "ship bone" in the Cave exhibition. :)

I really enjoyed my visit to the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. The collection is impressive, especially the exhibits from ancient Macedonia — the gold jewelry, statues, and everyday artifacts really help bring the history to life. Everything is well organized, and the information panels are clear and helpful, even for someone without a deep background in archaeology. The building itself is spacious and modern, and the layout makes it easy to move through the different periods. I also appreciated the temporary exhibitions, which added some variety to the experience. The only reason I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that some sections felt a bit repetitive, and a few exhibits could use better lighting or clearer signage. Still, it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in Thessaloniki and interested in the rich history of the region.

If you're in Thessaloniki, the Archaeological Museum is definitely worth a visit. When I went, there were three exhibitions: The History of Macedonia, The Gold of the Macedonians, and In the Cave. A free app is available that provides in-language guides about the artifacts on display; these are always accompanied by bilingual captions (Greek and English). The second exhibition I appreciated the most was The Gold of the Macedonians. The artifacts are beautifully crafted, with such minute details that it amazes you how the goldsmiths managed to work the metal so delicately and elaborately without having power tools or precision instruments. The third exhibition is temporary, also interesting, and the spaces are organized to evoke the idea of the inside of a cave, with display cases containing archaeological finds from Greek caves. We spent 2.5 hours exploring the museum, and it was enjoyable. Inside there is a bar and at the end of the visit a souvenir shop.

The Alexander the Great Statue in Thessaloniki is a grand monument inaugurated in 1974, representing the strong bond between the city and the legendary Greek figure. The statue portrays Alexander on his loyal horse, Bucephalas, standing at an impressive 11 meters tall. Located at Nea Paralia, it offers stunning views of Thessaloniki's famous landmarks like The White Tower and the Umbrellas sculpture by George Zongolopoulos.
Great place. The statue looks great, but i think that the depiction of the battle of Gaugamela right next to the statue is even better. Check it out!

This impressive equestrian statue portrays Alexander the Great atop his legendary warhorse Bucephalus, gazing eastward toward the lands he conquered. The statue is located on Megalou Alexandrou Street, within the Alexander Garden section of Nea Paralia (the New Waterfront), just east of the White Tower Standing 6 m tall, with a total height of about 11 m including its marble pedestal, it is the tallest statue in Greece. The statue was crafted in 1973 through public fundraising and officially unveiled on August 30, 1974 (Saint Alexander’s Day). Designed by sculptor Evangelos Moustakas, the bronze cast was produced at the “Renzo Michelucci” foundry in Italy. Moustakas won a competition among 25 Greek sculptors for the commission.

The Monument of Alexander the Great in Thessaloniki is truly impressive, located right by the seafront promenade. The statue is powerful and majestic, showing Alexander on his horse, and it feels fitting to see such a tribute here in his homeland. It is a symbol that connects the city with its authentic ancient history and heritage. The area around is spacious, perfect for walking, relaxing, and taking photos, especially at sunset. A must-see landmark when visiting Thessaloniki.

Situated near Koukounaries in the west of Skiathos island, this beach is surrounded by green trees and natural beauty.

Golden sand and transparent sea. A surreal sunset. The beach is mostly covered with sunbeds, there is not much space to put a towel or your own beach furniture, which is against the Greek law that 50% of the beach should be without sunbeds. Sunbeds cost €15-20 per set in july, and in August the prices are even higher. There is a toilet, there are also changing cabins. There are also two showers but neither of them worked. There is also an elevator to enter the water for disabled or elderly people. The beach is fully wheelchair accessible. There are two beach bars on the beach. One of those two bars has a DJ and fantastic house music, you can have a great time there.  The bar staff, on the other hand, is not very polite. At least it's quite expensive. The same bar rents deck chairs for €20 per set and in august prices reach 40€. The sunbeds are really too close to each other. The sunset and house music can really leave you with unforgettable memories. The beach has free parking, but it is not of a large capacity.

Comfy loungers, we found it to not be too busy at the end of May. Normally put off by beach bars which play music but 90s pop and RnB went down a treat 😂 Food at the beach bar is obviously higher priced than elsewhere, but they come and take your order and bring it to you on the loungers. €15 for sunbeds (at the end of May) gets added to your bill when you ask for it. This was average price during our stay. Would happily come back again as sand was lovely and sea had hardly any waves even on a really windy day.
Annika S — Google review
Nice beach and easily accessible. It is less crowded in case you prefer more peaceful places. There it is a small cantine where you can grab a coffee and rent some sunbeds and umbrellas. Of, course you can always to bring with you your personal stuff.
Haris K — Google review
Lovely water and sand, good choice of bars and small eating spots, also water sports equipment available to hire, not quite 5 star as a couple of music places were loud and was fairly busy but we still had a great time and enjoyed convenient amenities would give 4.5 if I could!

This is by far my favorite beach in Skiathos in terms of vibe! Perfect for young people, with a great beach bar that plays really good music and offers top-notch service. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive, with lots of nice touches and complimentary treats. You can also enjoy a beautiful sunset here. Compared to Koukounaries, it feels more intimate and relaxed. I highly recommend this beach!
Cristina I — Google review
Sunbeds 20 euros per pair with umbrella. Food at the bar is just as good to end your hunger - frozen fish/seafood. The beach is not very clean, full of stones and you can spot some seaweed at the edges. Not worth the hype. sunset was beautiful tho. Also rather crowded.

Beautiful beach with blue sea💙 Has interesting caving and some days could have strong waves! Parking is available up the road. However, it's limited, and some days would be difficult to find a spot! Beautiful beach for taking some pictures
Kristina B — Google review
A beautiful beach that is near two great taverns, has a bar, and has an organized stone staircase to go down to the beach. It’s not hard to access, but it has limited parking spots. BUT CAREFUL. You need to check the weather very well before you come here. It can have a strong wave and could cause danger to some weak swimmers. Come here on calmer, less windy days for the best enjoyment.
Janissa J — Google review
Amazing and beautiful beach! The water has an gorgeous color. Make sure to swim to the sides of the beach, and bring a floating mattress and a pair of goggles. Be aware that renting beach equipment such as a parasol and beds are pretty expensive.
Pavel K — Google review
One of the most beautiful beaches we've been to. The descent to the beach is also very special and beautiful. There is an opening in the stone that actually creates a separation between two beaches - one is smaller and more intimate but quickly fills up with people as time goes by. We arrived around 10:00 and it wasn't busy yet. The parking lot was full. The beach fills up quickly and when we left, around 1:00 PM, the parking lot and the beach were already full. The cost of renting an umbrella and two beach chairs is 30 euros. Worth the investment.

I recently visited this stunning beach beneath Pelion mountain, and it was an absolute paradise! The water is crystal clear, sparkling under the sun, and perfect for swimming or just wading in its refreshing embrace. The surrounding scenery is breathtaking—lush greenery meets nice , golden sand, creating a picture-perfect backdrop that feels like a postcard come to life. What truly sets this place apart is the vibrant, positive vibe; everyone, from locals to visitors, radiates joy and relaxation, making it an ideal spot to unwind and soak in the beauty. Whether you're looking to swim, sunbathe, or simply enjoy the serene atmosphere, this beach is a must-visit gem!

Good road, enough parking, restaurants close by, shadow from the rocks and clear blue water. Perfect!
Steven — Google review
Beautiful beach Parking gets busy so it is better to arrive early (before 10)
David K — Google review
Fantastic beach with crystal clear water. The beach is made of small and large stones, it is not easy to place an umbrella. The beach consists of two parts that are connected by an opening in the rock, and those who do not want to go through the rock can also go through the shallows. In the long part of the beach there are several openings in the rock that look like entrances to caves. The sea here is fun for snorkeling because there are a lot of underwater rocks. There is a free parking lot above the beach, which is partly in the shade. There are steep steps and a steep and slippery path leading from the parking lot to the beach, so be careful. There is a restaurant in the parking lot with a great terrace and a divine view. There is a beach bar on the stairs with a fantastic view. On the beach itself, there is a bar that rents sunbeds at a price of €20 per set, which is too expensive. There is a shower and a changing room.

Old Evripos Bridge

Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
The Old Evripos Bridge, also known as Chalkida Old Bridge, is a stunning arched structure that has been connecting the island of Evia to mainland Greece since its construction in 1962. This iconic bridge spans the Euripus Strait and serves as a vibrant hub for both pedestrians and vehicles. A stroll along this picturesque bridge offers breathtaking views of the surrounding waters and is an ideal way to soak in the local atmosphere.
Nice area with top views from the bridge which it's self is worth a visit seeing the water (tides) changing direction, car drivers seem more polite towards pedestrians than in Athens, food wise I found shop's have Athens prices ,
James S — Google review
Small bridge over Europe’s Strait water. Bridge opens up for sailing boats which is popular among locals and tourists. Euripus Strait is a narrow channel of water separating the Greek island of Euboea in the Aegean Sea from Boeotia in mainland Greece. Many popular restaurants are along the water, close to the bridge.
Manoj — Google review
The Chalkida Old Bridge is an absolute gem that is definitely worth a visit! The sunset views with all the lights illuminating the bridge create a magical ambiance. Taking a leisurely walk along the pathwalk surrounded by restaurants and bars adds to the charm of the experience. It was the perfect spot for us to stay and avoid going to Athens for an early flight. If you're looking for a picturesque and convenient location, the Chalkida Old Bridge is a must-visit destination. Don't miss the opportunity to soak in the breathtaking scenery and enjoy a memorable time by the bridge!
Igor K — Google review
The Old Bridge of Chalkida is one of the most iconic landmarks of the city. Built in 1896, it connects the center of Chalkida with northern Evia, crossing over the Euripus Strait. The bridge is famous for its unique mechanism that raises and lowers to allow ships to pass through. It is a historic monument and a popular tourist attraction, offering stunning views of the sea and the city. It is one of the key stops for anyone visiting Chalkida, and the traditional atmosphere around the bridge always leaves an impression.
Loukas M — Google review
The famous bridge of Chalkida and Evia, one of only 2 bridges that connect tge island with the mainland of Greece. This bridge have a long history because of the water under it witg every few hours the flow change sides. Every day (each time in different hour) the bridge is opening and boats are passing

Lovely place for a short trip from Athens. Best fish taverns and best place for walk close to seaside. Calm city. This aerial photo can show you the beauty of this place. This bridge also used long years before for extreme sports.

Ancient technology but still strong when walking on it and cars passing by, you can feel the noice. And a ship crossing we well all stoped both cars and humans. And you can hear the noice as they left the bridgle, amaizing. And I love the surroundings restaurants bars et cetera.
Brace K — Google review
I'm glad to have seen this old bridge. I walked over this and admired the Island of Evia from the Mainland side. Looking into the sea, the currents are so strong.

History Museums
The Athanasakio Archaeological Museum of Volos, housed in an elegant neoclassical building, showcases ancient artifacts such as tombstones, gold jewelry, and statues spanning from the Stone Age to the Roman Era. Located in the vibrant city of Volos on the eastern coast of Greece, visitors can also enjoy its picturesque seaside promenade known as Argonauts Avenue and indulge in delicious seafood at welcoming taverns.
When you first walk into the museum you would naturally think it’s relatively old style with high ceilings and outside lighting through skylights and bright lamps that reflect of glass. Also white walls with hessian backings. These days lots of modern museums are dark with close LED lighting focused on the objects. However what you find is something very special. Many of the most important objects - mostly in the Neolithic section - are actually not behind glass at all. That gives the viewer a real close and personal contact with the objects. And the Neolithic objects are quite brilliant. A very important museum to visit.
Jeremy K — Google review
The Archaeological Museum of Volos pleasantly surprised us. It offers a fascinating collection of tools, jewelry, and everyday objects, dating back as far as 5000 BC. It was truly exciting to see in real life what I used to read about in school textbooks. All the information is provided in both Greek and English, which makes the experience accessible and engaging. We arrived on a Saturday around 11 a.m. and were the only visitors for a while, which gave us the chance to explore everything at our own pace. After about 40 minutes, a school group arrived, which brought a different energy — it was nice to see kids learning about their history. Highly recommended for a calm, meaningful visit!
Anna ( — Google review
Nice little museum a bit out of the city centre of Volos. They have three different exhibitions: one detailing the palaeolithic and neolithic findings from Thessaly, one detailing burial customs and steles from ancient Demetrias, and one detailing the history of Volos. They have most signs in English, at least the ones describing the artifacts, but the informational signs in the Volos exhibition are only in Greek. Overall, the museum can be visited in less than an hour, especially in the morning when there are fewer visitors.
Jesper — Google review
Wasn’t expecting the extend of the exhibits. Great pottery collections. Need less than an hour. Building has been maintained inside and outside (garden needs some tlc), aircondition was working so was nice and cool inside. Paid EUR 10 entrance. Seems like entrance increased based on previous Google reviews.
Alex V — Google review
Anyone who loves Greek history and has the opportunity to visit this place is a must visit. There is a lot to see about the history not only of this place but also of the whole of Greece. My recommendation for this historical museum.
Nenad K — Google review
Nice little museum. Entrance is 10€. Easy to visit in an hour if you have some time to spare in Volos. Pity that most of the larger informational signs are only in Greek.
Robert R — Google review
I have very mixed feelings about this museum. On the one hand the exhibits are very good with interesting history and artifacts. There is a good amount of information available. It's a small museum but well put together. On the other hand, a lot of the information is only available in Greek. You can download a doc but it only gives an overview of the different exhibitions and a floor plan of the museum, nothing about individual objects. Having said that, I'm not sure that it's fair that non-Greek speakers must pay the same price or even more, and also at 10 Euro (29 Aug 2025), I feel they can really put in a little effort to also have everything in English too. There's supposedly some audio available that you can listen to for some things. But I asked the lady at reception and she said it's not working. Her English was very bad, so she might also have meant it's not available in English. So definitely make sure you take your phone with you and have an internet connection available so you can use Google Translate or a similar app to translate the various exhibit plaques.

Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece at 9,570 feet (2,917 meters), is steeped in Greek mythology as the legendary residence of the Olympian gods. This majestic peak holds cultural and religious significance and is a symbol of divine power and natural beauty. Designated as a National Park since 1938 and a World Biosphere Reserve, Mount Olympus boasts exceptional biodiversity and rich flora.
Fantastic place full of interesting ruins, especially nice to see the stadium where the Olympic Games originated. The town is very touristy and full of tour buses.Parking could be a challenge later in the year( we where there in early May) But the site makes up entirely for any inconvenience. ❤️

Beautiful part of Greece that is not overly touristy, except in summer where it's a popular hiking spot. But this is "good" tourism in my opinion. Will go back when I can

It took us 2 days 1 night. We started off from gortsia. It was a crazy experience hiking Mount Olympus. The last bit of hiking is the hardest bit. We didn’t have helmets or ropes lol but you’re probably safer to get them, unless you’re fit and not scared of hights. Views up here was crazy and if you are a hiker you should definitely climb Mount Olympus!!

Yes, I'm reviewing a mountain. Not my first mountain either, although I haven't reviewed Kilimanjaro yet. Ok, it's a an actual mountain, summit above the tree line, though only 2918 meters (9.578 ft), no snow up there but plenty of wind and temps are way lower than at the bottom. It's about 25,000 steps to the top, almost all of them ascending, of course, over often technical rock and rooty trails. I suppose it could be done in a day, up and down, doubling the steps. but not by me. I'm 76 and two days were definitely necessary. There's a hut not far from the summit, very basic, with: • surprisingly good fresh food throughout the day and evening, staring with coffee at 6:30 am (and not a moment before) • yes they take cards, tho I was told sometimes the payment terrminals or internet connection don't work, so bring at least 25 Euro as backup • unheated rooms containing 8-12 cots, where you could end up trying to sleep next to someone snoring like a 500 lb boor, as I did. Not pleasant. Bring ear plugs.

Seaside spa resort with luxe rooms, physiotherapy & thermal pools, plus refined dining options.
We stayed at this hotel in the middle of January. the hotel was surprised by the very, very friendly staff, the bartender served in the bar area, and his service is highly appreciated. The rooms are decorated in a modern style. We lived in a building that was renovated. a good store with high-quality clothes for spa treatments. The breakfasts and lunches are very good. the hotel has its own private parking.

If I could I would give no star at all!!! We spend 20€ on 3 drinks (Coffee was not even hot!) and just wanted to play some card, when a waiter scared us off and insulted us because we were no hotel guests (we were served and they knew that we were not hotel guests) He didn't let us speak and was incredable rude!!! never again!!!

High end Hotel beaming with tradition and history yet modern service. Their wellness spa is up there in line with the best that can be found worldwide. It was a short break but we have promised ourselves to come back for a long stay soon.
Jonathan S — Google review
I had high expectations for this spa, given the premium prices, but unfortunately, it was a complete disappointment. The cleanliness was absolutely unacceptable—dirty bathtubs, unkempt facilities, and an overall unhygienic environment that made it impossible to relax. The services were nowhere near what you would expect from a spa charging such high rates. The treatments felt rushed and unprofessional, with little to no attention to detail. The overall atmosphere lacked the serenity and luxury that a proper spa should offer. To make matters worse, the breakfast was just as bad—bland, low-quality food that was clearly not fresh.
Vasiliki M — Google review
The hotel is situated in a perfect location yet the maintenance is not as expected which left us with an unpleasant experience. The Spa pool and area are not clean enough, the towels ( if any, as not always available) are old and worn out same goes for the bathrob. This hotel has great potential to become a jewel but not in this cleanliness level.

Fast and comfortable trip that was on time both ways. I removed 2 stars only because I went to the ticket desk in Aegistra and the friendly agent said it was no problem to board an earlier ferry. I repeated myself just to make sure she understood that my ticket time was different and she patiently responded that the QR code would work. The QR code did not work, however, when I boarded and so I was unsure if I would have to buy a new ticket. The agent on the boat said she would take care of it and disappeared never to return. Please just make sure your agents and your ticket scanners are on the same page

Blue Star Ferries is a popular choice for traveling from Athens, Greece to Rhodes. Passengers appreciate the company's communication about cancellations due to bad weather and their smooth transfer to the next available ferry. The staff are professional and ensure that luggage is safely stowed away upon boarding. While some crew members primarily speak Greek, passengers find comfort in spacious seating areas and clean facilities on board.
One of the best ferry company I have ever visited. Staff is super friendly, facilities are great, security and speed on top, you can carry your vehicle and pets. Cabins are super well organized in order to make passengers happy and chilled. Booking and boarding is super easy. Maybe they can implement mobile app which that can make things easier. Fully recommended without hesitation, simply go and enjoy ✌️🧚👍✨

We tried two ships the Blue Star Delos Athens to Santorini and Santorini to Naxos, and the Blue Star Naxos. Delos is a bigger ship, a standard ferry with a few bars with a bit of food and drinks. Delos was rather dirty, lots of soot on the outer decks. The slightly older, smaller Naxos was very clean and we enjoyed that ship more, despite having less outer decking space. Both were visited in late March early April, so probably far from full, and we generally had lots of room on the outer decks.

Experienced this overnight ferry during the off-season, and it was fantastic! No wait times or lines, with plenty of comfortable seating available. The staff was exceptionally friendly and incredibly helpful, enhancing the entire journey. The food in the onboard restaurant was absolutely delicious, with every dish packed with flavor. Highly recommend this ferry for a relaxing and enjoyable trip!

I dont get why this only has 3.8 stars. We traveled to Paros and back and it was good. Restaurants and bars a plenty. Lots of seats and tables. Reservable airplane seats which are very comfortable. But even if you don't reserve dont (Which we didnt on the way back), there's still plenty of seats and tables. Only negative I can name is that on the way back we docked pretty far from the station. 30 min walk, but there's free busses you can take so it was okay. (8-10 min) Advice we got is make sure you check where you enter @ Pireaus and also where you exit at Pireaurus. That was good advice!

This was last-minute trip from Santorini to Piraeus Greece, and we were able to secure a overnight room. For the eight hour journey. The room is clean and had a shower and bathroom inside. We were also able to enjoy the coffee bar and a late night hamburger and chicken and fries from the food court. There is plenty of room for all of the guests, and we were able to move around freely on any of the floors. The boat was extremely late, several times we thought the boat had came, and went without us. There’s plenty of places to eat and shop while you wait for the boats in the port, but there’s not a lot of seats once you enter the terminal where you were waiting on your boat. I purchased one room fair and one additional guest.
JACOBGAMER20 J — Google review
Amazingly organized with thousands of people boarding and disembarking within minutes. Some of the boats are over 30 years old such as the Galaxy but were very well maintained. There are a few options for food on the boats but would recommend bringing your own. Suitcases are stored in the garage and are available immediately as you disembark. Be warned.. if you think you might miss your boat you can call up to 30 minutes before to request a refund. If you don't you are not eligible for any money back.

Went from Naxos to Santorini on Blue Star Ferries the giant ferry offers a comfortable and scenic journey across the Aegean Sea. Got free seating tickets, so we roamed around to look for a seat. It was a surprise to see full fledge escalators in the large vessel. There were cafes at the front and back of the passenger deck serving coffee and pastries. Prices are around 5 EUR for a cappuccino. Passengers can expect spacious seating areas, refreshments, and stunning views of the Cycladic islands as it sail from Naxos to the iconic cliffs of Santorini. Quite spectacular is the rear of the vessel which showcases the large wake generated by the propulsion of the ship. It's an excellent and fuss free way to get between the greek islands and enjoy a great view. The only gripe was that the toilets could be cleaner, but otherwise it was enjoyable.

I utilized this ferry company from Athens, Greece to Rhodes. They kept me updated on my ferry being canceled per bad weather. I had no problems getting on the next available Ferry. I was able to get all my luggage stowed away safely per my arrival on the ship snd get my cabin number assigned to me when I checked in at the reception. I loved my cabin and the staff were all very professional. I was very happy that my luggage was intact per my arrival to Rhodes. I definitely would utilize Blue Star Ferries again in the near future.

The Piraeus Harbor is a bustling seaport, renowned for its ferry services and impressive collection of yachts and ships. The harbor boasts numerous cafes in close proximity, providing visitors with the perfect spot to relax after exploring the area. While some gates may be closed, there are still plenty of ships available for those looking to embark on a maritime adventure. It's worth noting that punctuality is highly valued at this harbor, so latecomers may want to plan accordingly.
it is the main harbour in Athens There are many facilities and amenities such as a restaurant, hotel, and metro station, train station to collect the people to the airport and vice versa . Important the office tickets for ferry to all isles. The departures are all day and evening. The harbour is close the downtown Pireaus for the last shopping before the ride by ferry. Of course the bus, tram, and taxi many choices to react to downtown Athens.

David S — Google review
There have been some modern updates since the 50’s but it’s not a modern port by any stretch of the imagination. Everything looks like the 1960’s but the necessary infrastructure is not here and may never get here. It can look comical how a country with so many islands don’t have a modern port but that’s a different conversation. If it gets busy good luck finding your way around. Most recently a paid passenger was thrown off the boat and died because the government has not figured a secure way to board people and vehicles on the boat. It looks like Europe but it reminds you a crossroad of cultures.

Battlefields
If you're a fan of History, Sparta or simply the 300 movie this is a place you got to visit. Be warned though: Not much is left (or at all). A recent billboard explains where and how the battle took place. This will help you visualize what happened and get a good grasp of how Leonidas and his men stood up against the Persians!
H F — Google review
Last stand, day 3 of the battle happened here. Persions killed the Spartans with arrow swarms when hand to hand could do it. Don't miss the burial mound by the thermal springs to the west

Holy Monastery of Hosios Loukas

Sights & Landmarks
The Hosios Loukas Holy Monastery is a magnificent Byzantine-style religious complex established in the 11th century. It is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and situated between the towns of Distomo and Kyriaki, about 23km southeast of Arahova. The monastery comprises two churches, including the principal church that houses some of Greece's most exceptional frescoes from the Byzantine era. Visitors are expected to dress modestly (no shorts).
We stopped here on the way to Delphi from Athens. This was the most impressive monastery we visited in Greece. The number of the mosaics and beauty was staggering! There is also an adjacent small church on the site by the parking lot and the views of the area are amazing.

A monastery off the beaten path which we really liked! We took a detour to the monastery on our way back from Arachova to Athens. It is big and beautiful and has a beautiful painted crypt and inside of the church. Well looked after and lost of interesting history. The stables and one or two other buildings did burn down 2-3 years ago and they are restoring it. It does not distract from the great experience and I can highly recommend the place. Lots of parking and we could pay by card.

A must see. Worth a detour, worth a visit. Meteora is also a must see at a stunning location. This is a stunning monastery at a beautiful place.
TheLaurierstreet — Google review
Stunning view of the mountains, the building itself is beautifully taken care of, it is active so people do go to participate in service but there is plenty of small areas to explore with bits of history information and a small museum room where u need to buy entry tickets. There is a large parking lot higher up from monastery but with the hills and stairs it could be difficult for someone with mobility issues. There are clean toilets for use before you get the entry gate as well

I drive in from Domvrina. The drive was amazing, Ag Anna was beautiful, all the villages on the way were beautiful and the Monestery is in a unbelievable place. Stunning views. The people there are so nice. I recommend anyone visiting Greece visit here.

Would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area. Lots of history and things to see. I think it was 10€ to enter.

Gorgeous monastery that everyone should visit. I can't believe how obscure this place is when it's monumental and religious value matches that of Parthenon in its respective hostorical era. The view is wonderful and everyone is so friendly and willing to share facts about Saint Loukas and the monastery itself.

Temple of Apollo

The Temple of Apollo in Delphi, Greece, is a remarkable ancient structure dedicated to the god Apollo. Despite its current state of ruins, the temple's grandeur is still evident through its massive Doric columns and expansive foundation. The site offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valley and archaeological area. Delphi itself holds UNESCO World Heritage status and was once a prominent center for Greek city states to present votive offerings.
It’s a fantastic place. You can really feel the energies here. The ancient temples, the location itself, and the view are breathtaking. It fills you with good energy. A short meditation around the temple is wonderful. The whole place is in such a beautiful setting. The nearby town has very nice hotels and restaurants.

Worth the money and the trip. Gorgeous ruins and views. Very informative museum along the site. You might wanna go around morning or afternoon to avoid high noon sun.

It is humbling to see how advanced the ancient Greek were, compared with the rest of Europe. A really impressive site to visit. The walk to the stadium is quite a climb. (Not hard, just exhausting in warm weather) If you really want to see it, go for it. It is beautiful. I would surely recommend getting a top view from the theatre, to really see how big the site is. Also, dont forget to visit the museum. Perhaps visit the museum first. And remember the statues you see there. A lot of pieces of the puzzle will fall in to place at the site. As you can hardly imagine how things would have looked
Jelle — Google review
The site itself is relatively compact and, to further that feeling, when we visited the Athena part of the monument was temporarily closed. The space is well kept, and even or a rainy day the site was still very accessible with no security concerns due to slippery terrains. The temple of Apollo was amazing and everything from top to bottom was stunning, especially in context with the rest of the remnants like the treasury and the market. Didn’t have time to visit the museum, however, I still found it very much enjoyable and interesting.
João C — Google review
An unforgettable experience. After visiting the museum we climbed the hill up to Apollo's temple. The place has a certain atmosphere, which cuts through even when the huge tour groups rumble through each area. If you have any interest in the Oracle you must come to see this magical place. Ask Apollo for advice at his temple, which is the centre of the universe, and wait for a sign. The views are stunning and the only negative is I wished it hadn't been so busy. Perhaps try to visit at a quieter time of year. Highly recommended.

A great place to visit some ruins. Beautiful. Striking. Imposing. Impressive. They’re in the process to add a cafe by the entrance. A few cats that are hungry, they come to visits expectedly for food.

The famous Temple of Apollo at the Delphi archaeological site, located between the beautiful town of Arachova and the modern village of Delphi, is absolutely worth visiting and highly recommended. The place where the temple stands feels magical—you can truly connect with the surrounding nature. There’s something special about the mountains, the golden-yellow flowers scattered everywhere, and the lush green trees. A helpful tip: be prepared for plenty of walking. It’s like an easy hike up to the upper part of the site, where you’ll find a stunning ancient stadium and breathtaking views.

Very nice area on the top side of a mountain with a nice view. A lot of history here and informational plaques. There’s also plenty of staff around the help keep things moving and answer any questions. Would recommend taking a trip out here if your looking for places near Athens to explore

Museums
The Delphi Archaeological Museum is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the ancient site of Delphi. Just a short stroll from the archaeological ruins, this museum was established in the early 20th century to showcase an impressive collection of artifacts unearthed during excavations. Visitors can marvel at architectural sculptures, pottery, and inscriptions that date back as far as the 15th century BC. The exhibits provide fascinating insights into ancient Greek religion, art, and daily life in Delphi.
A wonderful little museum. The rich history of the site is well displayed in an ordered museum. We visited on a Wednesday at about midday. The museum was very busy, in particular the tour groups which whizzed through were cramming the whole place up. These should really be limited in size. Some really great pieces are in the museum and we both really enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

Really incredible visit. The views are top notch and the entire site is exquisite to visit and learn about. We were nervous about the time to drive up from Athens, but we hired a driver for the day and it was worth every bit of the cost. Not only a driver, but guiding us along the drive and pointing us in the right direction once at the site. Worth doing, don’t drive yourself and I’d avoid the massive tour buses. Very much worth a visit all around. Do the site first and museum second. Bring water and be prepared for hills.
Alexander W — Google review
Wonderful museum and archeological site closed to the modern village of Delphi. The museum has wonderful artifacts but is not overpoweringly large. There is a good flow through the development of Delphi as a sacred site and it's demise before being restored by the Romans. The archilogical site is deceptively large, winding a long way up the mountainside. Allow at least 90 minutes to see the whole site. Cafe at museum ticket office serves good coffee and sandwiches. The shop is a bit twee but has some interesting items. Main downside of the site is the toilets. There is nowhere near enough for the volume of visitors and the inevitable queues and lack of cleanliness are quite offputiing. Much better to take the short walk into a taverna in the village, and probably as quick

Delphi was absolutely breathtaking — one of the highlights of my trip to Greece. The combination of stunning mountain views, ancient ruins, and peaceful atmosphere makes it a truly special place. Walking through the archaeological site, you can really feel the history and imagine what it must have been like thousands of years ago. The Temple of Apollo, the ancient theater, and the stadium are incredible to see up close, and the museum adds great context with beautifully preserved artifacts. Everything is well organized and easy to explore, and the scenery surrounding the site is simply majestic — it feels almost spiritual.
Arash — Google review
We visited ancient site first due to rain, but recommend museum first. Great exhibits. Do not miss an allow at least 2 hours. Came later in the day and seemed ho be thinning out. Lots if tourist busses. Also was able to park on street close to museum for free. Lots of great artifacts and pieces of history.
EveryDayGlory ! — Google review
Lots to see, varying degrees of difficulty great for individuals with wide range of physical capabilities, and must have a good knowledgeable guide to bring the site to life. Little known fact, a landslide in the last few years has made the area around and access to the Athena temple a restricted no entry area. However, there are plenty of amazing views and spaces to rest in the shade that allows you to soak it all up.
Dana E — Google review
Delphi and the museum are just wonderful. There really is something special about the site and the museum is concise and has great information about the history of the area and more. Definitely worth the visit! My only drawback was the very expensive cafe at the museum - I bought a half a tiny pizza that was tasty but somewhat dry and far, far too costly.
Franco F — Google review
It was a long drive from Athens but it was worth it. If you have time, it's definitely worth seeing there. The same ticket works both for the Museum a d the Archeological Site. Beautiful history and well preserved statues. Highly recommended 👌🏼

Delphi is a modern town located west of the ancient archaeological site. The town was established to accommodate the population of Castro, which had to be relocated for the excavation of the ancient Delphi site. Ancient Delphi, situated on Mt Parnassos with views of the Gulf of Corinth and surrounded by olive trees, is considered one of Greece's most spiritually significant archaeological sites.
