La Rabida Monastery

Mentioned on
2 lists
Monastery
Sights & Landmarks
La Rabida Monastery, a 13th-century Franciscan hermitage, is steeped in history and significance as the site where Christopher Columbus sought guidance from monks before his monumental voyage to the New World. This captivating location not only showcases relics from Columbus's expeditions but also features an audio guide available in multiple languages, enhancing visitors' understanding of its rich heritage. The monastery is surrounded by stunning natural beauty, making it a delightful stop for history enthusiasts and casual travelers alike.
An interesting place to visit. This Franciscan monastery is best known for the visit of Christopher Columbus in 1490 and his consultation with the Franciscan monks about the circumnavigation he was planning. Here he stands for two years. Currently, many relics from the discovery of America are exhibited here. The monastery consists of an authentic-looking church and a statue of Our Lady of Miracles, in front of which Columbus prayed for hours before setting off with his crew for the New World, and a hermitage with a garden, which has been converted into a Columbus museum. There is an exhibit hall where the flags of each of the countries in the Americas are on display and a small sealed vessel containing soil from the New World. Surrounding the courtyard are frescoes in a pre-cubist style done by the Spanish artist Daniel Vazquez Díaz in 1930. The subject of these paintings is Columbus and his expedition. Set aside at least half a day, as it is an interesting place, and around it there is a garden, a park, and nearby is the museum with Columbus's three caravels. Near to the monastery is José Celestino Mutis Botanical Park

This place is wonderful. I visited here many times when I was a little girl, while living in Andalucía. This is a very special monastery. It's the point where Christopher Columbus left from Spain to discover the New World. When you walk out to the balcony, you can see replicas of La Niña, La Pinta, y La Santa María. The view from this wonderful balcony is really impressive and very beautiful. This monastery is also unique in that it is also a museum of the time when Christopher Columbus was preparing to sail to the New World and sought the advice of the Franciscan monks here. La Rábida is a real gem of the historical significance of this time. Like a treasure trove, it holds many artifacts of this time in 1492. It really is such a wonder to visit every single time. I truly love it here. The area is really lovely. It is one of my top two favorite places in the entire world.
Mar Z — Google review
Historic place. The nature all around is mind blowing. Interesting for the ones who like the history of C.Columbus and discovery of the America Sailor Imran
Md Y — Google review
I only stopped for the restrooms, which ended up being closed. I was pleased with the beautiful garden. The statue of Christopher Columbus was really interesting and had a lot of character.
Jacob W — Google review
It's an interesting place for everyone interested in the history of Columbus' expedition (but not only for them). Definitely, the audio guide helps to understand better all the objects presented in la Rabida and is available in several languages (including German and English). And do not forget to visit the Muelle de las Carabelas!
Maksym G — Google review
Small but nice. They have audio guide de vicesecretario. Rich in history of Christopher Columbus.
Wilbur R — Google review
A most fascinating 13th Century Franciscan Monastery, with unbelievable history linked to Christopher Columbus - and beautifully restored. Well worth the effort to take the time to visit. A short bus journey from Huelva (20mins), costing just €1.75 each way. The Bus Driver (Damas Bus Company) was very helpful.
Andrew R — Google review
unique monument where world changing history was made. The first trip of Christoph Columbus departed from here in Oct 1492. He used 3 ships, named: la niña, la pinta, santa maria

Muelle de las Carabelas

Mentioned on

Museum
Historical place
Muelle de las Carabelas is a museum that commemorates Columbus' voyage and the art of shipbuilding. It features an exhibit hall and three reconstructed ships, all meticulously maintained. The museum building is beautifully designed and every detail is carefully crafted. Visitors can learn a lot about Columbus, making it perfect for families with children or anyone interested in history. Wheelchair access is available, but access to the boats may not be possible.
3,80€/adults and little Paradies for children. Impressing how small the ships were in comparison to todays and what an achievement it must have been to sail all the way from Spain to the Americas. It would be lovely if more language support in addition to Spanish will be added.
Stf S — Google review
Nice little museum with replicas of the Pinta, Santa Maria, and Nina ships from Christopher Columbus's exhibitions. Its fun that you get to walk on and into the ships. The replicas really give you a scale and perspective of the times. The museum has a few interesting artifacts inside and outside. The price is very reasonable. Free parking available nearby. Overall a good stop!
Toni S — Google review
A great historical experience!! There is so much to learn about Christopher Columbus's ships, how they were sailed across the ocean and what the sailors endured. An amazing place at an amazing price. Well worth a visit!!
Maureen S — Google review
It is a good experience! The things we don't like are: you can't get there easily, the only public transport is M-402, M-403 from Huelva bus station where no English spoken person for information. We wait for 1 hour for return to hotel, no bus and find a taxi luckily. Just wondering no tourist go there alone?
Agnes L — Google review
A piece of history but maybe could be presented with a little more care. The three ships are interesting to visit to feel how the journey was, with a bit of light inside the ships would be better tought.
Rafael C — Google review
Great exhibit with a very cheap entry fee. If you want to catch the little movie that they play, the English subtitles seem to be on the left, so I'd recommend sitting on that side of the room. Just loved exploring the lifesize replicas of Columbus' ships!
Pruthvish K — Google review
Excellent place to spend a couple of hours learning about Columbus’ voyages. Made all the more interesting knowing these three replica ships had actually retraced the 1492 voyage.
Chris M — Google review
Great museum! It's interesting, and the ships are very cool! The surroundings are also cool!

Muelle de Riotinto

Mentioned on
5 lists
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
The Muelle de Riotinto is a 19th-century pier located in Huelva's old town, renowned for its picturesque views, particularly at sunset. Constructed during the industrial revolution and connected to the Rio Tinto mines by rail, the historical wharf offers visitors a glimpse back in time to the 1870s. Unfortunately, it is now bisected by a busy four-lane street that detracts from its charm.
Great historical landmark that is well preserved and very relaxing to walk along the dock/quay.
Nick D — Google review
Really cool historic landmark. Were in the area and this was something unique to do. You can walk the bridge on three levels and enjoy the view. There is also a park area (paved) around it where there are public toilets and a place to grab refreshments. If in Huelva or the area, you should stop by. There is also free parking available.
Daniel G — Google review
Awesome dock! Really worth the walk. Shows signs of rust. Hope the star the maintainance soon.

Delphine C — Google review
Such a cool place. Stumbled upon it because of the lunch we were having, but it’s really great architecture. Looks like the perfect background for a scene of a movie. Sunsets must be insane here.
Kaylee W — Google review
Awsome place to visit, especially when seen the tv serie (City of spies) partly based on the true story. Great piece of Spanish and European history.
Eeva K — Google review
It’s a perfect place to run, take a walk, sit, picnic, and even fishing. Of course it’s a landmark to visit too. There is a beautiful walking trail and a separate bike lane by the shore that goes a long way along with open gyms at a couple of places. There is also a play ground with slides and swings. I enjoy walking and jogging by the trails and watching the sunset from the dock.

Situated outdoors, the Centro Comercial Islantilla offers a diverse range of shops and eateries, including cocktail bars on the upper level. It provides easy access to the promenade and features a direct route with a walkway leading to the beach. The atmosphere is quite pleasant, and the staff at the establishments are typically friendly and attentive in their service.
Lively place in July and August and so close to the beach! Very quiet rest of the year but I love it any time of the year! Free parking for first hour. But I think between when summer is over, parking is totally free. Lots of shopping places and restaurants. But most of them are open for summer time! Over all good atmosphere and clean place.
Kaiser R — Google review
Shopping centre nearby the beach with a lot of shops, a supermarket, public toilets and restaurants. It is close for a few hours at lunchtime.

I visited End of season. I believe most shops close when the hotels close for the season. There’s lots of little tourist shops. There are some lovely clothes shops. And a wonderful bookshop. Restaurants and bars - have lovely views of the coast
Helen J — Google review
Great authentic paella in one of the restaurants right at the entrance, very good ice cream and interesting shops with clothes and swimwear. Siesta/break in opening hours mostly from 2:30 to 5:30pm/6pm (differs per shop)

Good shops but bad restaurants serving awful food! So many great and authentic places are at less than 10 minutes walk!!

great beach for collecting shells and there is bathrooms and a lot of resources nearby!
Yasmine M — Google review
Very nice walkway or boardwalk. The only issue with the hole area is the amount of dog waste that was on the footpaths and walkways. Nearly every 30 meters, there is some mess left by a lazy dog owner. You can't enjoy your walk as you have to watch out for organic landmines .
Gerryc I — Google review

Busy, but nice wide streched beach.

One end of the beach is extremely quiet,if you walk along to the other side, it has lots of small restaurants and the fishermen are working on the beach and getting ready to take their boats out, The holiday season is just starting here and things are still in the process of being put out, it's all very charming

Zipline & Aerial Adventure Parks
Limitezero offers an exhilarating zipline adventure that begins in the quaint village of Sanlucar, Spain, and whisks you 720 meters across the Guadiana River into Portugal. As you soar at speeds reaching 80 km/h, you'll find yourself in a new time zone—an hour earlier by the time you land in Alcoutim. This thrilling experience is not just about speed; it's also about enjoying breathtaking views as you glide through the air.
Amazing experience, thanks guys! The team kept it safe and fun. We highly recommend it! Make sure to book in advance as they had a lot of customers during last weekend

An unforgettable experience. I recommend. Note that the site is next to a café by the river and only opens at 4.30 pm. The phone is a simple answering machine. Pay only at the moment. You can book online without paying.

Great experience! Zero stress and all staff was pleasant, humorous and accommodating. The actual line not too fast and the impact at the end was minimal. Xavier in particular was very helpful, kind and fun! Thank you from Cyprus 😊
Zena S — Google review
So easy to get set up on arrival. Loved the photos taken by the photographer as well. Highly recommend to people visiting the area.
Darren W — Google review
I am extremely dissatisfied. I had called before to clarify whether my 15-year-old son could do this alone. This was confirmed! Then I told them that I have about two hours to travel and would be leaving now. When we arrived, they said he couldn't travel alone as he wasn't 18y. old and wouldn't be able to get back across the river on his own. So the journey was for nothing. The treatment was also disappointing: while the men were friendly but reserved, the woman at the counter was dismissive. This was not the service I had expected.
Maja M — Google review
Great way to spend a few hours.... obviously the zip line itself takes a minute, but both villages either side of thr river are well worth a look.
Chris G — Google review
This was my third jump with LimiteZero, with previous jumps in 2015 and 2019 with different groups of friends, and the first two were excellent with everything easy and well laid-out. On this occasion, the website would not permit us to book or pay - there was an error on both occasions that we tried. I followed up by email, and they accepted our booking and said we could pay on arrival. When we arrived, there was some confusion, but we were able to pay and jump. On previous occasions, we have been given information on how to purchase photos of our jump when we landed, but that didn't happen on this occasion; the photographer was busy taking photos of other jumpers and in a roped off area, so we assumed the process had changed since the pandemic and contacted LimiteZero about the photos the following day. Unfortunately, if you don't speak with the photographer immediately on landing, the photos are deleted. The photographer was dismissive and unpleasant when I contacted him, directly blaming me for not knowing how the process worked, which was a sad ending to the experience. I'd recommend that LimiteZero return to providing information on landing. The jump itself still feels safe and well-prepared, but the admin surrounding it could be improved. Note that the ferry from Alcoutim runs half-hourly; if you're coming from Portugal, allow time to get across the river, and remember that Spain is one hour ahead.
Briony R — Google review
Great experience!!! The staff is friendly and the ride to Portugal is smooth and fun Update August 2019 We came back to zipline again with more people. And once again it was a great experience. I highly recommend doing the zipline for the experience, the fun and the ride.

Bodies of Water
Pulo do Lobo, also known as Jump of the Wolf, is a popular tourist spot located approximately 11 miles (18 kilometers) from Mertola. It is renowned for being one of the most striking sections along the Guadiana River. Legend has it that the narrow stretch got its name because a wolf could leap across it in a single bound. The waterfall itself is quite dramatic, with the waters of the river cascading through a rocky gorge.
We took the east side trail. Coming from the town of Serpa going south on route N265. At Vale the Poco where Agostinho restaurant is located we turned right (west) following the Pulo the Lobo signs that lead you to a parking lot overlooking the Guadiana river. There is a nice wooden terrace there with picnic tables From there there is a nice wooden built trail that takes you down and south and north few hundred meters in each direction. There is a views are amazing. You can get off the wooden built trail and go down all the way to the river bank and the actual Pulo the Lobo Highly Recommended

Wild extremely special waterfall. The huge river flowing threw narrow rocks, the sound of water is deafening and it looks like a moon landscape. You can find beautiful stones here. Not for the fainthearted.
Monica C — Google review
Nestled in the heart of the Guadiana Valley Natural Park, Pulo do Lobo (literally “Wolf’s Leap”) is one of Portugal’s most dramatic and captivating natural landmarks. Located in the Alentejo region near Mértola, this narrow gorge of the Guadiana River offers a breathtaking display of raw, untamed beauty. Nature at Its Wildest Pulo do Lobo gets its name from a local legend — it was said that only a wolf could leap across the sheer, rocky chasm. When you stand at the edge of the viewpoint, it's easy to see why. The river rushes through a narrow gorge carved into ancient schist rock, creating thunderous rapids and swirling currents. During the rainy season, the spectacle is especially powerful, as the water surges with dramatic force. Scenic Views & Hiking While the waterfall itself is the main attraction, the surrounding area offers scenic hiking trails through cork oak forests and Mediterranean scrubland. Birdwatchers and nature lovers will appreciate the rich biodiversity, including rare birds of prey and wildflowers. The trails are not too demanding, but proper footwear is advisable due to rocky paths and occasional steep sections. Remote and Peaceful Part of what makes Pulo do Lobo special is its relative remoteness. Don’t expect large crowds, souvenir stands, or commercial facilities. This is a place for quiet reflection and awe. There are a few viewpoints, some with wooden railings and signs in Portuguese and English, but overall, it’s wonderfully unspoiled. Tips for Visitors Access: Best reached by car; the final stretch is on a dirt road. Time of Year: Visit in spring or after rains for the most impressive water flow. What to Bring: Water, snacks, sturdy shoes, and a camera — the light around sunset is magical. Final Verdict Pulo do Lobo is not just a stop on a tourist map — it’s a raw encounter with nature's force and beauty. It’s ideal for travelers who appreciate rugged landscapes, tranquility, and a touch of legend. Whether you’re a photographer, hiker, or just someone seeking a moment of awe, this hidden gem of Alentejo will leave a lasting impression.

All rounded trail is around 6 km. by rocks, by gravel road and small path. If you like nature and silent places, nice to visit

Well worth the drive. Start early, it gets hot quickly & wear good footgear. We took a picnic to enjoy there. Please please take your rubbish back with you. We were so disappointed to see the carelessness of visitors before us.

We drove from the West. Quite a long drive along bumpy narrow roads eventually leading to a dirt track for the last 1.5km. Google tries to take you off road but follow the signposts through the village instead. The rock formations are interesting but quite honestly not worth the trip. There is a footpath along the west but on the east side there are boardwalks. No toilet facilities. The water looked polluted with scum and foam. So many nicer places to go to so I don't recommend this one unless you happen to be nearby.
Londoncoffeeaddict — Google review
This is far better in person than it is in pics. The gorge is other-worldly and I have seen no other place like it. However, other than a few tiny spots, there are no beach or swim areas here and accessing the river is somewhat difficult, except for a tiny unmarked path past the 'merendas' area. Even this is difficult. NOT for children to play or bath in. To reach the access, do not follow trail markings once you pass the gate. I did and it just took me in circles once I passed the dry brook. Better to drive past the gate (close behind you) and just drive down the well kept gravel road till the end. The other side you see marked on Google maps is a "Pesadiços" boardwalk that is quite extensive, but has no access to the river edge.

Praia de Cabanas, also known as Ilha de Cabanas-Mar or simply Cabanas Beach, is a serene and expansive 7-kilometer stretch of unspoiled white sand. Accessible by a short water taxi from the boardwalk of Cabanas, this beach offers tranquility and relaxation for sunbathers. The island has its own amenities including a cafe-bar, showers, toilet facilities, and options to rent sunshades.
I recommend São Tomé The island offers stunning natural beauty, including lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and unique wildlife. It's relatively untouched by mass tourism, making it a peaceful place for relaxation and exploration. However, infrastructure can be underdeveloped, and the language barrier (Portuguese) may pose challenges for some visitors. The local culture is warm and laid-back, but don't expect luxury amenities everywhere. Great for eco-tourists and those looking for an authentic, low-key adventure. I didn’t just travel there without detailed information, all thanks to the author Leo Russo for the São Tomé and principe, your book I purchase on Amazon make my journey within São Tomé and principe smooth, fun and memorable

The beach itself is very nice but the beach bar is overly expensive. You can have the same beach experience in nearby beaches with better services altogether, including bathrooms.

A really good clean beach, can get busy in the summer months, especially at the weekends. However we went on the first boat over at 8am (I know, so early!) And it was empty on a Saturday morning, took breakfast with us, perfect! Also you must have the chocolate bolas 🤤

A beautiful beach and so relaxing listening to the waves.
Michael U — Google review
Beautiful, less touristy beach on a small island just off the mainland. There are several ferry services with the one we chose costing 1.50€ return. You pay to rent the sunbeds and parasols, for May it was 15€ for two people and it goes up in the summer months to around 22.50€. The whole area is gorgeous and much less crowded than other parts of the Algarve, we got the tip to come from a local and happy we did try it out. Good restaurants in the area as well. Would love to have stayed longer.
Joe L — Google review
We had a fantastic day at the beach, we went outside of UK school holidays, and on a week day so there wasn’t many people on the beach, but to hire four sun beds with two umbrellas was under €40 which wasn’t too bad. There is a part of the beach where you don’t have to hire sun beds as well. We had a good day and it’s about a 5 minute walk from the boat pier with raised walk ways and wooden walk ways on the beach. Whilst it didn’t effect me, if you have mobility issues it maybe a bit difficult as there is steps up and down.
Matt D — Google review
Nice beach you need to take a taxi boat which cost us €3 return for two people. You can rent the sun bed with an umbrella if you want. We got our own with us. There’s only one bathroom there.

The Castle of Mértola is a medieval fortress that stands proudly atop a hill, offering commanding views of the surrounding landscape. While not the most aesthetically pleasing castle, it is the focal point of Mértola and well worth the trek to reach it. From the river, the town presents a picturesque scene with its stone walls and whitewashed houses culminating in this sturdy stone castle. Visitors can explore this historic site free of charge and soak in its ancient ambiance.
Great to walk about, we got in free, not sure if there is a ticket price A walk up the tower is a must, great view of the city Free public toilets outside and remains of a roman house

Absolutely stunning!!! From a distance we sit and stare at the castle, but to walk up and around inside gives you a whole other perspective. Stunning scenic outlook being so up high, from all angles and so much history to absorb. Highly recommend! We loved it and are so glad we came to stay and experience the beautiful hillside town of Mertola in South Portugal.

Castle of Mértola Type: castle Current price: free WC: located outside of the castle Path for disabled: not available Parking: available, small Bike parking: not available Public transport: Redexpressos bus, Rodoviária do Alentejo bus + 15 min walk Medieval castle built during the Islamic period. It was particularly rebuilt after the Reconquista, so the architecture is a combination of different styles. Next to it are more ancient ruins. Also, within the tower is a small museum with medieval items.

If you happen to be passing through then it is a worth a wander round the castle. As the views are good, looking in both directions along the Guadiana river and the town. Although it's not as spectacular as the castle at Beja.

Really enjoyed our visit. The town is fabulous around the castle with cobbled streets and picturesque buildings. It is a bit of a climb to the castle but not too bad. Once there, there is an excavation underway of roman ruins around the castle which is very interesting with plenty of view points. The castle offers fabulous views of the surrounding countryside. We visited in November and it was free.

We stumped up on this little beautiful peaceful well maintained town on the way from Spain to Lisbon. The castle is so well maintained with all renovated levels that have wooden and marble stairs and museum floors with a local staff who was extremely nice and knowledgeable to tell us about the town. Everyone who worked here was so nice, proud and educated of their own town. The entry fee is FREE. I'm super impressed with how they very well managed to maintain their history, the whole neighborhood and castle. So much respect for these people and this town. The whole atmosphere is so peaceful and relaxing. We also stopped by a restaurant down the tiny street and the food was so delicious and healthy. Highly recommended!

Beaches
Praia do Barril is a charming beach located near the historic town of Tavira in the eastern Algarve region of Portugal. This family-friendly destination offers long stretches of white sand, calm and clear waters perfect for swimming, and picturesque dunes. The area's rich fishing history is reflected in the old tuna-boat anchors that adorn the beach and the converted fishermen's cottages that now house cafes and restaurants.
Amazing beach. Clear water and suitable for all ages. Water was fantastic and warm. Early June. Bodyguards are available on the beach. White soft sand, sand ocean floor and very clean. Park at the road. And you have to walk around 300/400meter to get the train to take you for the rest of the way. Walking is around 1.1km to the beach. Lovely walk and paved. There are couple of bars, restaurants. Public toilets, single shower booth inside male's WC, 1euro for a minute/or two for warm water. Highly recommend..
Darkwing318 — Google review
You can catch the train to the beach or walk there. It's aprox. a 20min walk with plenty of shade! I would say the price and waiting time for the train isn't worth an every-day trip - I would, however, recommend catching the train for a cute experience. There are multiple parking spots along the riverside, but I recommend going early in the morning, before 10am, to get a parking spot near the beginning of the trail. The bars and restaurants in the beach are very affordable, considering their lication! The bathrooms are super clean, always with a cleaning lady. Regarding wheelchair accessibility, there is a part in the train for wheelchair users. Although the wooden track to the beach may be hard, there is a water wheelchair, that let's you enjoy the sea as well!
Matilde R — Google review
Loved this beach! The sea was quite clear and you also have the opportunity to get a little train that takes you to the beach instead of walking the pathway. The anchors are definitely immpressive giving the whole beach a unique character. We were in Tavira and just took an uber to Santa Luzia for under €10. The train ride was €2 to go or €4 with return - however on our return there was such a massive crowd that we decided to just walk and it was very lovely so I recommend trying both:)

One of the most beautiful beaches in Algarve. You can reach it by foot ( 20 min walk from the entrance) or by 'chuchu' train (4 € round trip). By the beach a restaurant, great ice cream, wc'c and showers, and on the beach ⛱️ areas, priced by 1 or 1/2 day stay, areas for people with their own ⛱️ and waste, white sand beach left and right. Life guards watch over you. No dogs allowed. Along the path pass the swamp area you will find benches to rest on. And great eco posters on local fauna and flora, as well as ocean protection.
Gosia K — Google review
We enjoyed the walk across the marshlands and the beach with the anchors was lovely too. The air has a lovely spice aroma of curry from the fields of curry flowers.
Aleja R — Google review
Really beautiful beach. Big waves so be careful when going in the water. Especially coming out its hard and the waves crash into you hard. Also we took the train that brought us there, you can walk but it’s a little over 1km. The ticket is 2 euros one way.
Elodie J — Google review
A really lovely beach, there is a train that you can ride or you can walk alongside the train track. Train was approx €2 each way and super family friendly. The beach is spectacular and the tuna fishing anchors are a lovely thing to view on your way to the beach. There are cafes, bars and restaurants. Public toilets are free and spotless. Overall a fantastic beach!

Tavira Island is an 11-kilometer-long barrier island located just off the city of Tavira. Accessible only by boat, it offers stunning white-sand beaches with clear waters, perfect for swimming and basking in the sun. Visitors can reach the island from Tavira's marina or nearby Quatro Aguas via boat, or by taking a tourist train from Santa Luzia during the summer.
Be careful when the sea tide in you can be stoked in the island
Nino C — Google review
The island is approx. 1.5km circular walk. Lovely white sands and clear waters although there were quite a few jelly fish. All your expected beach amenities are there - restaurants, bars sundowners areas for those not wanting the loungers. Relatively quiet in the morning. Got busier in the afternoon.
Maria 6 — Google review
One of the Algarve’s most inviting and laid-back beach destinations, perfect for a relaxed day trip or a longer seaside escape. Accessible by ferry from Tavira, the island offers a long stretch of soft golden sand, calm turquoise waters, and a peaceful, undeveloped vibe that contrasts nicely with some of the busier resort beaches in the region. The beach is wide and clean, with plenty of space even during high season if you walk a bit away from the main drop-off point. The water is generally calm and great for swimming, and the surrounding nature is part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, adding to the sense of tranquility and beauty. Near the ferry landing area, you’ll find a few casual restaurants, snack bars, and small shops where you can grab food, drinks, or rent umbrellas and loungers. The facilities are basic but sufficient—don’t expect luxury, but you’ll have what you need for a comfortable beach day. If you’re willing to walk farther down the island, you’ll find quieter spots and even some clothing-optional areas. It’s a great place to escape the crowds and enjoy a more natural beach experience. Keep in mind that there are no ATMs on the island and not every vendor accepts cards, so bringing some cash is a good idea. Also, shade is limited unless you rent an umbrella or bring your own. Overall, Ilha de Tavira is a beautiful and peaceful place to spend a day by the sea. It combines natural charm with just enough convenience and remains one of the hidden gems of the eastern Algarve.
R — Google review
We liked the way you get there. By ferry from Tavira, 20min or so. The island is very green, has place for picnic, restaurants and small shops. The beach is huge, very busy in summer!

Flat, wide beach reached by short ferry or tourist train. Even in busy months you can walk a bit and find space. Facilities are simple but reliable. Breezy conditions are common; a windbreak helps. Family-friendly and low-stress, with enough length for a proper beach walk.

Nature & Parks
Cascata do Pego do Inferno is a hidden gem in Tavira, recommended by locals for its picturesque waterfall and small lake. The hike down to the site is challenging but worth it for the breathtaking natural beauty. Visitors are advised to wear good gripping shoes and be prepared for walking and swimming in this piece of paradise. The pond with a cascade of water offers a unique experience, where some brave individuals even jump off rocks into the water.
Absolutely beautiful right now (middle of April). Park at the nearby parking lot (with the same name to the northwest), then follow the road to a trail . When in doubt, stick to the right. Some reviews complain about a very steep path…that’s a shortcut. If you’re staring down a cliff above the laguna, go either way instead for an easy path.
Dennis — Google review
There is free parking on the road and a 0.5km trail to reach the lake. The trail is not signposted, so it can be a little confusing to follow. It’s also a bit steep in a couple of short sections. The waterfall was dry, but the pool looked very attractive for swimming. Sadly, the edges of the lake are badly overgrown with bamboo plants and there is not much room to sit. Would be great if the bamboo could all be cut back and removed.
Paul B — Google review
Like this place is breathtaking and magical, also love the fact It is kinda secret. However, the fact the locals are going there to bath not only themselves, but also their dogs and the smell there is kinda weird is making this place great to look, but would not recommend to swim there, but if you dont mind that aspect than the jump from the rope or from cliff feels surreal. Amazing place
Marcel D — Google review
I suggest everyone who complain about the trash here, to pick some up on your way back (we had a bag with us) and if you promise to do that, I will send you the gpx trail of the easy access (many people go the wrong way!) 😉😉
Ana K — Google review
So worth it!! We read the conflicting reviews and almost didn't go - the Waterfall & small Lake are picturesque. Parking is close but the hike down is very challenging - I slipped & fell on my backside, but was so happy we made the hike & saw this amazing bit if nature - Tavira never disappoints. Go if you have good gripping shoes & be prepared to walk & swim in this piece of paradise. We had the unique pleasure of cheering on two rock jumpers as well, another once in a lifetime experience!
Wil W — Google review
There is free parking available. Approximately 10minutes of walk on a narrow, dirt path. Can be challenging to find and reach with little kids. The place itself can be rather disappointing in the peak of summer, even after a day or two of rain. Overall, if you are tight on time, missing this location wouldn't be a big los.

Culatra Island is a 6km-long inhabited island that can be reached by ferry. It boasts a lighthouse, beaches, and a lagoon. The island has a relaxed atmosphere with a town surrounded by the sea, featuring local restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood at reasonable prices. Culatra is known for its uncrowded nature even during the summer season, offering a village with small shops, restaurants, and a beautiful beach perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of Faro.
One of the best beaches in the Algarve. The only hassle is to get here. Boats take off every 15 min from Olhao (ticket price 2:10€) which are over crowded this time of year. We took our own taxi boat which is more convenient and quicker (10 minutes vs. 25 mins with the ferry). In the tourist center in the "new marina" they charge you 35€ pp. Drop that and call the taxi boat directly, then you will pay 35€ for the entire ride even though you are more than one person. The beach at Culatra is obviously more crowded now than when I visited it last time (22 years ago...) but is still worth a visit. The beach now has sunbeds/umbrellas (15€ for 2 beds + umbrella) and a kiosk which serves drinks, ice cream and some snacks (crisps and micro burgers). All driven by sun panels (so you can pay cash, with Paypal app or Revolut app). The sea is also warmer than other areas of the Algarve due to the winds. Despite the effort, I strongly recommend to go here!
J. A — Google review
We had a fabulous day on Culatra. After getting the train from Faro, we caught the local ferry. It took about 30mins to sail over. Once you dock you walk through the quaint little town following signs for the beach, its easy walking on the boardwalk. After about 1km you reach the Atlantic ocean, the beach is spectacular with gorgeous sand & blue sea. We opted to walk along the beach to Farol. Took about 40mins, bit harder walking on sand but lovely to paddle. The beach at Farol is fine, perhaps not quite as nice as further along but still good. Spent few hours here, had lunch at the Maramais then got 4pm ferry back. A perfect day ⛱️🍻😎

Beautiful, authentic island with not very much tourism - and that in combination with the fishermen and their families living there is what makes it so unique and beautiful. 🤩 it takes 20-25 minutes to get there walking in the trail from the boat to the beach. But, it is worth it. Awesome beach, water, there is a bathroom and a bar for drinks

Great experience. Traditional fisherman industry island with typical villages, casas and restaurants from snacks to top Portuguese couisine. Prices for all pockets. 2 broadwalks. One to the main Atlantic beach where at the end you will find a beach bar or cross the lagoon when the tide is out and walk on the north side to the island's tip where a small deep chanel seperates Culatra from Ilha Armona. An Ultra natural and protected area. Some of the tour boats take day trippers there for idilac paddling and canoeing. (See Captain Steve Tours). Remember Keep to paths not dunes. On this side....There is a lonely tree near a small broadwalk. Planted by a tiny seed and tendered regularly by a German who settled on the island and built a house on the lagoon from waste and flotsam. Died 2022 .. his casa is still there but sadly vandalised and much of his loved art work that decorated his casa gone. From the Atlantic beach you can walk to the village Farol where the lighthouse is and catch the ferry back to Olhao.
Brenda W — Google review
The beach here is off the track and worth the trek. Getting onto the island took an hour by ferry from Olhao. Once you make the seemingly unending 20 min walk, you step onto a beautiful beach. Clear, cold waters, lots of waves. Has one beach kiosk and could do with an extra toilet.
Michelle-Allyson O — Google review
Beautiful white sand island only accessible by ferry from Olhão. The beaches on the Atlantic side are impressive but the water is cold and waves can get rough but where it's more sheltered its wonderful. Dont miss out on exploring the lagoons and interior of the island, it's fun with the kids. Then grab a beer in one of the bars while waiting for the ferry back to Olhão.

Barreta Island, also known as Ilha Deserta, is a secluded 7km-long island located in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Accessible by ferry or boat, it boasts a pristine nude beach and serves as a haven for migrating birds like spoonbills from September to November. The Santa Maria boardwalk offers a 2 km trail with stunning views of the ocean and the island's arid interior.
Desert Island is 45 min away from Faro with Katamaran or 15-20min with speed boat from Faro city, it’s very nice ride to island and when you arrive there are some stairs you need to take from the boat. It took as around 3 h to walk around the whole island and you have lovely views to see Atlantic Ocean, you will find amazing, huge seashells, nice pebbles, sea stars and many more interesting things. The water was clean and clear with a lovely beach to swim in, just need to be careful with powerful waves. After nice walk and swim you can visit the only restaurant in the island and the food there is amazing and fresh. There is also stunning view next to the lighthouse.

Such a nice location. Visited for an afternoon and was lovely. Its slightly cooler than inland Faro which was nice. Not a cloud in the sky and the sea is crystal clear. Only costs €5 to get over on a 45 min boat ride. Would definitely recommend!

The Barreta island, or Ihla Deserta, is a must see if you are in Faro. We visited in December, but the weather was still great for sunbathing and a swim. You can hike around the island, and stop any time for a swim or to enjoy the view. We got there using the ferry, which was 10€ with return for a 45' journey each way. We found that the side of the island where the ferry left us had better places to swim, as the water was calm, while it was pretty wavy & windy on the other side of the island. As the island is deserted, there is only one restaurant there, which can be pricey if you want to dine in, but we used their take away service and the sandwiches were reasonably priced and tasty.

Wonderful, peaceful island. We were there off season. So not many people there a we could enjoy it more. I think, during the season it's a wonderful place for the lazy type of vacation. Just enjoy the sun on the beach

Lovely isolated beach to visit if you are looking to relax somewhere with few people. You can take the ferry from Faro that costs 5 euros and it takes around 45 mins to arrive or there is a faster option with shuttle that takes 15 minutes and it costs 10 euros. There is one restaurant at the island but it expensive so I would recommend to bring food if you don’t want to spend more money on food. There is an option to rent an umbrella with two chairs that costs 20 euros for the whole day. I think if you are planning to go 3-4 hours is enough to spend on the island! Beautiful views, the sand is so soft but the water cold!

Sights & Landmarks
The Igreja de Santa Maria, also known as Faro's Cathedral, is a Catholic cathedral with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. It was elevated to Se Catedral de Faro in the 16th century and still preserves some of its original architectural elements such as the bell tower and two chapels.
Ofcourse, must visit when in Faro for a great view of the Marina and sea. It was good to see the chapel of bones, museum but highlight for me was the tower, the views from the tower. There was not very long line for the tickets. Ticket was 5 £ pp. I would recommend visiting.
Shraddha — Google review
Lovely view from the top of the tower, the bells are in working order so be aware that they are loud if you’re quietly enjoying the scenery. There’s a display of historic clothing, which is interesting. The shrine of bones is small and missing all the skulls. The inside of the cathedral is quite impressive.
Marisa P — Google review
The Cathedral in Faro is a charming historic building with a lot of character. The real highlight is climbing the tower, where you get fantastic views over the old town and the surrounding area. That said, parts of the cathedral and museum feel a bit run down, and the €5 entrance fee seems a little steep for what’s on offer. It’s best to see the fee more as a small contribution to preserving the place rather than paying for a polished attraction.
Waldseeschloss — Google review
It’s absolutely worth a visit! The Cathedral is beautifully decorated and even has a charming little garden. Your ticket includes access not only to the Cathedral itself, but also to the museum, the fascinating bone chapel, and the tower. I especially appreciated the multilingual information provided for each piece of art, which makes it easy to understand the history behind them. Climbing the tower is definitely rewarding — it offers a wonderful panoramic view of the city. A very complete and enriching experience!
Attila F — Google review
Gorgeous cathedral in the historic centre built in the Gothic style in 1249 which replaced a Muslim mosque, itself built on a Roman temple ! Some notable vestiges of its origins remain, such as the tower and the large ogival portal. The two side chapels of the transept, surmounted by ribbed vaults, also in the Gothic style, date from the 15th century. Plundered and burned down in 1596, it was remodeled many times. Worth seeing are the late 17th-century azulejos that adorn the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário and the tomb of the knight Rui Valente.

Very touristy, but it's a tourist area so you can expect nothing less. Still quite busy considering it's off peak. Doesn't seem to be to expensive. Getting around using the Bolt app.

It is beautiful, with great art from the Barroc. It is 5 euros. It is worth it. You can go up the tower with beautiful views.

Also known as Sé de Faro, is a decently looking and historically rich landmark located in the heart of the Old Town. It sits proudly in Largo da Sé, surrounded by cobbled streets and peaceful orange trees, offering a tranquil contrast to the more modern parts of the city. The cathedral combines Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements, reflecting the many changes it has undergone since it was first built in the 13th century. While not as imposing as some cathedrals in larger cities, its charm lies in the details like the intricately carved wooden choir stalls, decorative tiles, and peaceful inner courtyard. One of the highlights is the bell tower, which you can climb for panoramic views over Faro’s historic center and the nearby Ria Formosa lagoon. It’s a short but slightly narrow and steep ascent, so be prepared, but the view at the top is well worth the effort. The entry fee is modest and includes access to the cathedral interior, the tower, and a small religious art museum. It’s a quiet and contemplative stop that doesn’t take too long to explore but leaves a lasting impression thanks to its peaceful atmosphere and historical significance. The Cathedral i definitely worth visiting, especially if you’re already exploring the Old Town. It offers a calm and beautiful experience with a glimpse into the city’s religious and architectural heritage.

The Mercado Municipal de Loulé, a historic market located in the city center, is a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists. The beautiful red and white Arabesque building dates back to 1908 and has been restored to its former glory. This indoor market offers a welcome escape from the Algarve sun and showcases an array of fresh fish, organic produce, local crafts, cheese, meat, nuts, dried fruits, and honey.
Every Saturday morning till 1:00 pm in the center of town.. Large indoor and outdoor market stalls with meats, cheese, fresh bread, pastries, olives, vegetables, fruit, spices, honey, fresh flowers, souvenirs. Great coffee shops and restaurants nearby.
Brenda C — Google review
We took the market trip to Loulé as the Gipsy Market sounded exciting and authentic also the fresh produce market sounded good, although we wouldn’t be buying as we were all inclusive at our hotel. The gipsy market was rubbish but the fresh produce market was very well ran with lots of stalls selling lots of great looking items. Also beautifully set, make this market your focal point and the gipsy market a filler if you are okay walking to it and need to pass some time.

Nice Saturday market in Loulé! Plenty of local products, lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, and regional delicacies. The atmosphere is lively and authentic, and the market hall itself is a beautiful place to walk around. They recently replaced the colorful fabric shades above the market with white ones. It looks clean and bright, but I preferred the old colorful version, it had more character. Don’t expect too many handmade crafts, there are just a few stalls, and most of the market is focused on food. Still, definitely worth a visit when you’re in the Algarve!

So atmospheric on a Saturday morning with the local produce stalls surrounding the market hall. Good value and very fresh. We have our favourite stalls for garlic, dried figs, honey, fruit, veg.Virtually all of them on a cash basis. The fish market section has an excellent selection of fish and shellfish. Not as large as Olhao market. We use the ( very cheap)car park opposite the law courts. Best to get there earlier in the morning - we arrive between 8.30 and 9.30am

Nice to walk around. I liked looking at the sculptures and art on the street and on the sides of buildings. Lots of shops and places to eat. There’s places to park but you have to pay.

Get an Uber and visit the Saturday Market and Municipal Market for an excellent day out. People watching from the cafe after purchasing lots of lovely fruit, veg at reasonable prices. Take a bag with you for it all.
Jacky W — Google review
I went at 1pm on a Tuesday and it was quite quiet with a couple of the stalls covered and most of the fish market closed. The fresh fruit and vegetables looked great. Stalls also sell local products like cloth, honey, nuts etc.
Graeme W — Google review
Beautiful architecture. The building is a must see. The market is worth a visit. We were there in January and not all vendors were open. But you can tell that the locals shop here. Butcher shop, fresh fish, organic, beautiful vegetables. Be prepared to pay with cash as most vendors do not take credit cards. Luckily, the wine shop accepted credit cards. I can’t wait to try the wine bottles they recommended!

The Aquashow Park Hotel in Quarteira is a vibrant and modern resort hotel with a seasonal water park, making it perfect for families seeking water thrills. The hotel offers unlimited access to the thrilling waterpark, featuring slides and rides suitable for all ages. For those seeking relaxation, there are Jacuzzis and lazy rivers, as well as dedicated areas for small children. Additionally, the hotel is conveniently located just a short drive from the beach and Vilamoura's golf courses.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We had such a wonderful stay at this hotel. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome and truly cared about ensuring all our needs were met. A special mention goes to our waiter, Cristiano – he was absolutely fantastic! Full of life, always ready with a funny comment, and he made every dinner an absolute joy. Each evening just got better and better, and we found ourselves looking forward to mealtimes as much as the rest of our stay. The service overall was outstanding, with genuine warmth and attention to detail that really stood out. We left with great memories, lots of laughter, and the feeling that this hotel truly deserves its 4 stars. Highly recommended!

I have just returned from a fabulous stay in the Aquashow Park Hotel. The cleanliness of the hotel was outstanding. Food was excellent and staff were so attentive and friendly. Nothing was a problem to them. We had access everyday to the waterpark and it was also excellent. I must mention Pedro on reception who had only started 15 days before we arrived. His personality is outstanding. The bar and restaurant staff were fantastic always smiling even at 7.30am. This hotel is rated a 4 star and in my opinion it should be a 5 star. Thank you to everyone for a wonderful stay

This hotel, staff, facilities and food was just perfect for our weeks stay in September. Our room was on the 4th floor and looked out over the waterpark and Quarteira were I witnessed every sunrise which was so very beautiful and different each day. The room, bathroom and balcony were spacious, clean and well equipped. A small fridge , free to use safe, toiletries, hairdryer and tv. The beds were very comfortable too. We stayed half board and the hotel is quieter by the 3rd week in September but this was also nice because their were no queues for tables or food. We have to give a special shout out to our waiter Cristiano who went above and beyond during our stay. The Aquapark attached to the hotel was clean with no queues this time of year and all the staff very helpful and friendly. I have a spinal condition so could only use the lazy river and my daughter and staff helped me on/off the lazy river every time. I was more than happy filming and photographing my daughter having the time of her life. Facilities at the park are excellent. Plenty of food/beverage outlets, rollercoasters, photographers, amusements and more. The location of the hotel is in a quiet area outside Quarteira itself but with easy access to the town, Vilamoura and Albufeira via bus, taxi or user so it was not a problem. We recommend this hotel and will hopefully return in the future.

We had a wonderful stay! The location is slightly out of town, but with a car it was no problem – only about 10 minutes to Vilamoura. This hotel is absolutely amazing for kids. There’s an indoor soft play area, an outdoor play area, and free access to the water park right next door. My baby is only 18 months, so still too young, but for children over 100cm it’s incredible – honestly one of the best water parks we’ve seen, and entry is free when staying at the hotel. Breakfast was solid (I’d give it a 4/5) – good variety, with fruit changing daily, and a decent coffee machine. The bar and staff were excellent, really attentive and friendly. A special mention to the kids’ entertainer, Teddy – he went above and beyond every single day, making the kids feel so happy and included. Reception staff were also fantastic – every request I made was handled quickly and with a “yes,” nothing was too much trouble. Little touches like having kettles and beach towels available with a refundable deposit were very handy too. All in all, a brilliant family-friendly hotel – highly recommend, especially if you’re visiting with kids!

Just returned from 10 day holiday here and we loved it! Hotel and water park are fabulous, clean and great for families! The staff at the hotel are kind, polite and attentive. They were super friendly to our children and couldn't do enough to help us as a family with anything. We are really impressed with the cleanliness at the park and the hotel, everyday all day there were people cleaning and tidying in and around both the water park and hotel. We will definitely be returning and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the hotel to others! Location is a bit remote but easy to get to local towns using the hotel taxi service or Ubers.

The staff at this hotel are amazing, honestly they all really need a pay rise. The reception, bar staff and restaurant staff can’t do enough for you. They’re so kind and make you feel really welcome. The food is also amazing. Yes there a few ants in the rooms but you’re in a hot country what can they do! They do their best to keep on top of it. Loads off stuff to do for the kids here also. The cleaning staff were also lovely. The staff here really do make this hotel, this was one of the best holidays me and my children have been on. I do really hope the owners of this establishment recognise how lucky they are to have such amazing staff. PAY RISE FOR ALL OF THEM!!!

I had booked my stay at Aquashow Hotel well in advance through the HRS platform, and the very next day I called the hotel directly to confirm the reservation and ensure that access to the water park was included, even though it was a corporate rate. During that call, the receptionist spoke with her supervisor and clearly confirmed that with my reservation, access to the park would indeed be included. I trusted their word. After driving 5 hours to get there, we arrived at the hotel and, during check-in, I was told that park access was not included. I calmly explained the situation and even showed the phone record proving I had called them the day after the booking, which was a call lasting about 3 minutes. Despite this, the staff refused to take responsibility for the information they had previously given me. They contacted the hotel manager/administrator, who didn’t even come to speak with us in person. Her response was simply that she wasn’t interested in offering any adjustment or compensation, and that no tickets would be provided. Their only offer was either to accept the stay without park access or cancel the booking free of charge, which we ended up doing, because this kind of attitude and treatment is completely unacceptable. After five hours of driving, this was the reception we received. Absolutely unprofessional and disappointing.

Excellent experience on the Tunisian dunes. The tour guide Leonardo knows very well how to deal with the desert environment, proficient with the bike and used to dunes riding techniques. Accommodation and services on tour are perfectly organised for such areas, to feel very pleasant all participants. I recommend such experience for off-road passionates who want something different and extreme.

Fantastic experience with all at buggy&bike. The staff was very helpful and friendly. We had a great off road ride. 3 buggys for 6 people. The route is beautiful and well worth the visit. You can make breaks and rest a little. Half way there is a lovely stop in a little village for a refreshing drink. The couple there were also so friendly and welcoming. I recommend wearing cloths you are happy to have mud / dust settle in, hence the masks. Masks, hair nets, goggles and helmets are provided. Definitely worth the visit.

Amazing experience on the dirt bikes. Alex the guide was amazing. Very friendly and helpful staff. I would HIGHLY recommend this company if you’re looking for a great days off road biking.

Tried to book on for the 1100cc buggy but got told they wasn't available, so I asked for the 500cc for a full day and again got told the full day wasn't available. So I settled for the slowest 500cc quads over the buggy which was woefully slow, really struggled to get up most of the hills and wouldn't go over 50kph. Upon arrival, we paid the €150 for the 3 hour tour, (which ended up being 2 hours 40 mins) and an extra €50 for the transfers (about 15 mile each way). Then immediately after paying that I got my credit card taken off me and got made to pay an extra €300 deposit for potential damages to the buggy/quad of which we knew nothing about before hand. The tour itself was lovely, great views etc, but they didn't like you going fast or pushing the buggy/quads anywhere near their limits. So if you want a very casual trip around some of the alvarge I'd recommend this, if you're an adrenaline junkie or thrill seeker, this is not for you.

All in all we had a nice 3 hours bike tour, but in comparison to a tour on fuerteventura last year: some more help and instructions would have been nice! A helping hand dressing up when you don't know how to handle the protectors, and especially how to ride the bike the enduro way. I had to ask for some back protection. The guide just showed us the way, driving in front of us, not looking how we were doing. My english is not very good but he barely understood anything of what I was asking him. We did not ride KTM or Husqvarna but AsianWing which I did not know. It was okay though. I had a free pick up at the hotel which was nice and the email contact was very friendly. The trails were stunning and for a medium tour well chosen. Thanks for the adventure.

Great adventure, well worth the money! Buggys were in good condition and the views once you got up the hills were amazing! The tracks were good and fun to drive. We did come off one of the tracks which was a little scary but we did get the buggy back on within 5-10 minutes or so. Would do this again if we ever go back.

We did the 3 hour trip, which stops at a cafe (be sure to get a toasted sandwich - they are good) and you visit a really pretty spring. The countryside was amazing and everything smells of eucalyptus. I was a bit apprehensive...but shouldn't have been - it was fine. Not too steep, or sheer drops off the side of the track and it's very professionally run. Dieter and Jo are very friendly and will look after you. They gave us instructions to meet at the fire station in a nearby town, and we're there waiting when we arrived to take us to the start point. Jo was very responsive on email. When get back you can have a beer at their bar. We really enjoyed it.

Very nice people at Hugo's, unfortunately my quad was badly maintained. Mirrors broken and duct taped on, no braking liquid in rear circuit so no rear brakes ... tour was nice but very calm. Drink stop was exceptionally closed... swim in the lake would be even better without leaches... next tim better...

What a great trip! We went on the 2 hour quad bike tour and loved it. 2 of our group had never been on a quad bike before hence the shorter tour. We were made to feel welcome from the minute we arrived and the whole place had a relaxed atmosphere. Questions were welcomed and any concerns were quickly addressed. The tour itself is guided by a very knowledgeable guide who leads the way through a maze of tracks that would have the rest of us lost in minutes. He was happy to stop on request to take photos or break for water but also happy to keep riding too. The scenery was unbelievable! one minute you are on top of a cliff with views over the land and next surrounded by trees in the woods. If I could offer any advice to people looking at this tour it would be to take the longer tour as the time passes so quickly once you are out. We would have easily managed the 3 hour tour. I can't praise Hugo's quad adventure enough and we will certainly be doing it again.

We had a lovely enjoyable trip with Ricardo who was funny, informative and friendly. He has great knowledge of the beautiful local area and wildlife which he shared with us and felt we were in safe hands. It was a great 3 hour trip with 4 others, including a stop to a beautiful empty beach where we could use snorkel gear - we did 6km kayaking total. Would not hesitate to recommend to friends visiting the Algarve or come back if we were in the area again. Thanks!
Sophie H — Google review
This tour was simply fantastic! Ricardo, our guide, was so friendly and hilarious. As a marine biologist, he was able to tell us loads of interesting things about the wildlife, the coastline, and all the things we saw on the way out. As we kayaked back to the beach, we went through caves, little passageways, and spent time on a deserted beach. The final cave we visited was the coolest thing we have done on this trip. Ricardo took amazing care of us as a group and was the absolute best guide. We really enjoyed this trip, which is a little off the beaten path, in the best way possible. Absolutely recommend!

Highly recommended for anyone looking for an insightful and fun kayak tour - including cave exploration and snorkeling. What a beautiful experience with such a friendly and funny guide Mr. Ricardo😁 . It was our first time doing kayaking and Mr. Ricardo gave us all the information related to our tour. He showed us all the beautiful caves and beaches and make our tour overall fun and interesting. Will highly recommend .Thank you for giving us an amazing experience.

It couldn't have been better. We had a fantastic kayak tour with Ricardo - including sea cucumbers, crabs, sea urchins and a sea baptism 😀. Ricardo calmly showed us the most beautiful caves. He snorkels live and his enthusiasm is infectious. This memory will stay with us for a long time. Thank you Ricardo.

Had an amazing morning with friends on a guided tour by Algarve Freedom Kayaks. A friendly welcome right from the start. First we received our lifejackets and dry bags, and then were given an explanation on how to paddle and steer our kayaks. We were then towed in our kayaks by boat for about 20mins from Ferragudo to around Carvoeiro. Then our host Ricardo took us on our tour. This included caves, beaches, snorkling, and beautiful scenary. One of the best parts for me was Ricardos incredible knowledge of the environment and ecosystem, sealife, birds and fish, which he was happy to share. Such insight and experience makes this trip unique. You get more of an understanding and feeling for the area, that enhances the natural beauty of the seascape. I highly recommend this tour. At 30 euro for 3 - 3.5hours its well worth it. Morning tour is the best, starts at 10am and not soo busy in the area at that time. Muito Obrigada!
Jenna-Rose A — Google review
We loved our morning on the kayak tour. Ricardo and Octavio were super kind and had such knowledge of the area. They really wanted us to experience everything. The caves were amazing and only accessible by kayaking so if you’re thinking of a boat trip, this is what you must do instead! Octavio caught and released an octopus we could see and hold. The caves were a once in a lifetime experience, the light, the water. It was magical. Octavio is a linguist who relayed all information in multiple languages to the group and Ricardo was our patient captain. We highly recommend.

Wildwatch Algarve offers an unforgettable experience with professional marine biologists and experienced skippers guiding you to increase your chances of encountering dolphins or whales in their natural habitat. The team is praised for providing a lifetime experience, showcasing the power, elegance, and joy of dolphins in the open sea. Despite weather conditions affecting cave exploration, guests appreciated the full 2.5-hour sea excursion where two pods of dolphins were spotted.
Great experience! Went out to see dolphins - and saw many of them! In addition we even saw a mink whale. Cannot ask for much more on a 1:45 hr tour. Knowledgeable friendly guide who is a marine biologist and could answer all our questions. Would go for this tour anytime again!

We booked a trip with Wildwatch at the start of September. The whole experience from start to finish was flawless. Brilliant tour, can’t praise it enough. Incredibly friendly staff that are hugely knowledgeable. Their success ratio is incredibly high for sightings and are very respectful of the animals. All staff are incredibly well experienced and are there to give you the best experience they can. Took us a good while to see our first sighting (so don’t be concerned if it takes a while) but when we saw the dolphins and porpoises we were treated to amazing sights. Great review of videos and photos when we got back and tea and biscuits. Can’t thank them all enough or recommend more. Obrigado/Thank you/Diolch/Merci.

We looked at several dolphin watching companies in the area and chose this one as it was recommended by someone in our accommodation. We were not disappointed! Wildwatch presented themselves as a responsible provider and definitely not one of the many other providers that you see running up and down the coast in convoy. Only 12 people onboard for the 1hr45 dolphin watching trip and after a fast and exciting 30mins run out into open water, the captain and marine biologist spotted a group of bottlenose dolphins - approximately 30 of them with 2/3 juveniles. They treated them with respect and didn't crowd the group whilst getting us up close to witness the beautiful interaction and playfulness of these stunning animals. On return, we were treated to cake and coffee and a detailed / informative de-brief. Overall, an exceptional trip with an exceptional provider. Highly recommend going with this company.

Always amazing views with clear sky, was fun exploring with all the thick fog surrounding me and the visibility reduced to 3m, I highly recommend visiting during the summer escaping the heat of the city and enjoy the view, but if you seeking adventure I can recommend it as well 👌🏻in a foggy day

Amazing, must visit. The drive up the mountain top is worth it by it self. If you drive slowly enough there is lots of balconies/road sides to stop and admire the views. When visiting the mountain in May there was hardly any people. Made a friend with a local dog who visits the mountain from close by farm/house.

A great walk to the summit - but the summit itself is deeply scarred by all the ugly towers. It’s quite awful at the top and we could let get away from it fast enough.

Fóia is a superbeautiful place to visit! It is the place from which you can see almost over all the Algarve. You can see west and southcoast coming together, you can see almost all coast cities and being there with having that view is just breath taking but also breath giving! The ride up there is fun, with decent to good roads, miradouro just below the top and a good parking area on top! On weekdays dyring the day its not crowded, but it can be in weekends. There is also a café and an Artisenal store next to the parking lot. Quite enjoyable too! Make sure you are daring to drive up to the mountain, if comming from the NL and you have never driven hills or mountains it can be quite a challenge, just make sure you dont try to shift up gears to quickly. I never had problems with it but i have seen people struggling with their cars or even (camper) vans.

Beautiful lighthouse with a soccer field situated right next to it. Gorgeous cliffs. Parkings available but not for campers.

Spectacular views of the cliffed sided inlets washed by the blue/green coloured Atlantic ocean. The headland is honeycombed with walks being used by many multi national hikers. The head land is watched over by a majestic lighthouse quietly doing its job.
Michael B — Google review
Although the lighthouse is not accessible, this is a perfect place to take a walk/hike across the rugged coast line on the public trail along the cliffs. The views are spectacular and because the more difficult parts have been flattened out, it’s also accessible with a stroller. Be sure to bring your football, because there is a one of a kind pitch right next to the wild sea:

Beautiful place for a walk, but do take care of walking outside the paths. Plenty parking. No toilets. Tip: The sunset is a beauty.

Great views!

Visited this place by the end of November. Was definitely worth seeing it: stunning view, no people around, looks very mysterious. p.S. take a jacket with you, it can be pretty windy over there.

Odeceixe Mar Beach is a stunning Blue Flag beach located in the natural beauty of Costa Vicentina National Park in Odeceixe, Portugal. This picturesque seaside town offers a haven for surfers and nature enthusiasts, with its location along the Rota Vicentina hiking trails providing breathtaking coastal views. The beach itself is part of the Costa Vicentina National Park and is known for its perfect waves that attract both skilled and aspiring surfers.
Gorgeous beach with some major inclines, but so worth it! Stunning cliffs and overlooks available. Atlantic meeting the river is a present bonus. Looks like it has mush to offer during season, but even in a January Saturday, we really loved our hike around.

As others have said, a beautiful beach with the sea on one side and a river on the other. Went today in the height of summer and, whilst it was very busy, it didn't feel over crowded as the beach is so big. However, we were there at low tide so much more beach space than when at high tide. To the north there are rock pools with creatures to find - beach shoes would be very helpful as the layers of rock are hard on your feet. The only negative is the lack of shade. You can hire a fixed umbrella and two sunbeds for €20 for the day or €15 for half a day. Apart from this the beach is completely exposed and everyone brings their own parasols. Because of this we stayed for less time than we would have liked. Otherwise it's a gorgeous beach with a wonderful combination of the safety of the river for children to play in and bigger waves on the beach for body boarders and surfers. Life guards are also present. Before walking down onto the beach (which is quite steep and therefore not great for anyone with mobility issues) there are restaurants/shops to get drinks, food and usual items including sun cream. Be warned though, parking is hard work and limited. If there are spaces on the roadside before the road drops down to the beach then definitely grab one. Would absolutely return to this beautiful place.

One of the most beautiful and magical beaches I’ve seen so far! During low tide, you can see the river flowing into the ocean and on the other side explore the little cove next to the nudist beach. We went during June so the beach was rather quiet and peaceful.
Parnian A — Google review
Very beautiful and calm. The water is of course cold but it worth to visit.
Janis T — Google review
Beautiful praia. Toilets and bars are available. Kind of cheap board rentals for perfect surfer waves. Very shallow water so you can stroll conveniently into the sea.
Marco D — Google review
This beach is absolutely stunning. There's a side to the river that is calm and perfect for swimming and chilling out. Then there's the ocean side which is wilder with lots of surfers and waves crashing in. We went there while walking the "Odeceixe to the sea" circular route of Rota Vicentina.

One of the most beautiful beaches in the world. However waves are big, which is great for surfing (even in the winter) but can be hard for swimming. The river and sea meet which is a beautiful thing to see.
Douwe H — Google review
This beach is quite unique. It is very large to begin with. Then the Seixe River ends right the at the beach. Can it become any better than this? There quite a few people walking their dogs, must be really fun for all of them. The nearby village is within a walking distance. Best beach I’ve visited so far.

A fixture in an ever changing world. I first drank in here 29 years ago and structurally it has never changed. Bar staff have gone elsewhere but the vibe still remains.

I like this place. A dark and comfortable pub like bar. Seems more like an English pub than the usual Portuguese bar. A nice place to escape the sun if you've had enough!

Cosy friendly pub. Great 80s background music when we visited. Two lads behind the bar ready for banter. Will definitely return.

Tourist bar with nice decor, and alcoves. Air con was broken though, and shut about 1am. Next door was good for another hour though.

Praia da Amoreira is a picturesque sandy beach situated at the mouth of the Aljezur River within the Vicentine Coast Natural Park. This moderate difficulty circuit trail spans 7 kilometers and offers activities such as nature walks, birdwatching, and swimming during summer. The beach is part of a coastal town in the Algarve, close to other stunning beaches known for their clear waters.
Nice beach where you can take surf lessons. But the thing I liked the most is the river that runs past the rocks. You can walk passed the river or even cross it (at low tide about knee deep) to get to the other side and the restaurant at the top of the hill. The tide makes changes to the scenery so really nice to just sit down and see the tides change.

Beautiful beach, lots of sand, good for a bit of surf but the sea is a bit dangerous. There is a sort of river that connects to the ocean and usually the children love it the most. Has a lifeguard. Very good for walking near the ocean.
Filipa P — Google review
Wide beach with nice big waves 🤩 just make sure to set up your navigation to end up on the side where the restaurant is, otherwise you’ll be on a side where you have to cross the water and if the water tide is high, you won’t be able to cross/come back 😅 Highly recommend to visit this place to everyone visiting Algarve !🇵🇹
Edvin G — Google review
Beautiful beach, the bay is wide giving plenty of space to setup and enjoy. Surfing conditions are very good and the sea remains shallow enough to walkout if you're getting started. Be sure to bring some supplies or else there is one restaurant to get food and drink with a range of local dishes
Oliver M — Google review
Magical place, our favorite beach. We returned again and again. Morning, evening. Low tide, high tide. Every time excited. A river flowing to the ocean and then back again. Tidal waves. Beautiful and breathtaking.

Seems like I keep giving lots of 5 Star reviews lately but that’s just the nature of Southern Portugal and the effect that it has on my Wife and I. Drove up to the small town of Aljezur this weekend. Have been wanting to go there for a while. Nice little town. I initially thought that the town was on the water (west coast of Portugal) but it turns out to be a few kms inland. However, the remote area heading out to the Sea from the town is also considered to be Aljesur so it really refers to the area in general. Being a Beach oriented guy I just had to see what was out there. So I followed a riverbed on the map to where it meets the Ocean and found the beach of Praia da Amoreira. Cutting to the chase, if you’re a Surfer this beach should be high up in your “Bucket List”. The beach is surrounded by massive hills that form a Bay. The rollers coming in are impressive indeed. Made me want to be in my teens again, Surf Board under my arm (but I’m not). Coupled with this scenery is a really deep beach, lots and lots of sand running right up into the river bed. When we visited the river was landlocked (not actually reaching the Sea). I’m assuming it may have something to do with the severe drought that Portugal has been affected by over the past several years. Anyway, nice simple Bar/Restaurant right on the cliff above overlooking the entire beach and surf action. I’ll also note that this is a great destination for Adventure Bike tourers. I “shall be back”!😁

Highly recommended. At first you’re welcomed by the huge shoreline there - you can walk for more than 30 minutes along the sea, and much more if you continue up the river. The fine sand tickles your feet gently. If you catch a low tide, you see fabulous rock formations and intriguing black cliffs. Best of all - there are only two buildings around the entire beach, both - restaurants.

I woul call this place a little paradise Very beautiful and also highly recommended for relaxing 😌 One day is not enough... IIMPORTANT: the only place in Portugal 🇵🇹 where I found hot water to swim 🏊‍♂️ by the river side. The water 💦 coming from the river meeting the beach 🏝 and the water flow is very nice for surfers 🏄‍♂️ Today Am coming back there to enjoy 😉 the place.

Praia da Arrifana is a stunning beach nestled amidst towering cliffs, making it a popular spot for swimming, surfing, and soaking in the views of castle ruins. It's widely regarded as one of the top surf beaches in the Algarve region, offering a consistent swell throughout the year. The sandy-bottom break makes it ideal for beginners, while advanced surfers favor Kangaroo Point at the northern tip.
Super nice spot for surfing if you are a beginner. Not too crowded even in August. You can’t go by car directly down to the beach but if needed there is a shuttle that brings you up/down for 1,5€
Alice M — Google review
Very nice beach! Stunning views from the cliffs! Excellent spot for surfers. On the top nice bars and restaurants.
Mister D — Google review
Spent a few days here with my partner. It’s quite a nice beach and we got some fun little waves on our long boards. There are plenty of walking tracks around with great views. Be mindful that there at lots of surf lessons which can pack out the limited breaks but they mainly stay in the white wash.
Gabe R — Google review
A true surfer's paradise, nestled between two large black cliffs, this superb beach stretches for nearly 400 meters, like a cove whose size has been endlessly extended. It nonetheless remains narrow, wedged between the waves lapping at it and a large cliff, closed off by a large stone spire. It's a favorite spot for locals to sunbathe and an exceptional spot reserved for very experienced surfers. On the heights, the ruins of the Arrifana fort offer a breathtaking and unforgettable view. A magical beach !
Enjoy L — Google review
A very nice place with a nice beach, surfers, nice life music at night and lower temperatures then in the Algarve.

Beautiful beach! Lots of surfing here and surf camps. Parking lot was 50% full at 10am but full at 1130am when we got back to car. However there is lots of street parking!
