great beach for collecting shells and there is bathrooms and a lot of resources nearby!
Yasmine M — Google review
Very nice walkway or boardwalk. The only issue with the hole area is the amount of dog waste that was on the footpaths and walkways. Nearly every 30 meters, there is some mess left by a lazy dog owner. You can't enjoy your walk as you have to watch out for organic landmines .
Gerryc I — Google review
Very long and nice beach with dunes and lots of seashells!
Ilya A — Google review
Busy, but nice wide streched beach.
Harold H — Google review
One end of the beach is extremely quiet,if you walk along to the other side, it has lots of small restaurants and the fishermen are working on the beach and getting ready to take their boats out, The holiday season is just starting here and things are still in the process of being put out, it's all very charming

Lido

Beaches
Praia do Barril is a charming beach located near the historic town of Tavira in the eastern Algarve region of Portugal. This family-friendly destination offers long stretches of white sand, calm and clear waters perfect for swimming, and picturesque dunes. The area's rich fishing history is reflected in the old tuna-boat anchors that adorn the beach and the converted fishermen's cottages that now house cafes and restaurants.
Amazing beach. Clear water and suitable for all ages. Water was fantastic and warm. Early June. Bodyguards are available on the beach. White soft sand, sand ocean floor and very clean. Park at the road. And you have to walk around 300/400meter to get the train to take you for the rest of the way. Walking is around 1.1km to the beach. Lovely walk and paved. There are couple of bars, restaurants. Public toilets, single shower booth inside male's WC, 1euro for a minute/or two for warm water. Highly recommend..
Darkwing318 — Google review
You can catch the train to the beach or walk there. It's aprox. a 20min walk with plenty of shade! I would say the price and waiting time for the train isn't worth an every-day trip - I would, however, recommend catching the train for a cute experience. There are multiple parking spots along the riverside, but I recommend going early in the morning, before 10am, to get a parking spot near the beginning of the trail. The bars and restaurants in the beach are very affordable, considering their lication! The bathrooms are super clean, always with a cleaning lady. Regarding wheelchair accessibility, there is a part in the train for wheelchair users. Although the wooden track to the beach may be hard, there is a water wheelchair, that let's you enjoy the sea as well!
Matilde R — Google review
Loved this beach! The sea was quite clear and you also have the opportunity to get a little train that takes you to the beach instead of walking the pathway. The anchors are definitely immpressive giving the whole beach a unique character. We were in Tavira and just took an uber to Santa Luzia for under €10. The train ride was €2 to go or €4 with return - however on our return there was such a massive crowd that we decided to just walk and it was very lovely so I recommend trying both:)
Daphne — Google review
One of the most beautiful beaches in Algarve. You can reach it by foot ( 20 min walk from the entrance) or by 'chuchu' train (4 € round trip). By the beach a restaurant, great ice cream, wc'c and showers, and on the beach ⛱️ areas, priced by 1 or 1/2 day stay, areas for people with their own ⛱️ and waste, white sand beach left and right. Life guards watch over you. No dogs allowed. Along the path pass the swamp area you will find benches to rest on. And great eco posters on local fauna and flora, as well as ocean protection.
Gosia K — Google review
We enjoyed the walk across the marshlands and the beach with the anchors was lovely too. The air has a lovely spice aroma of curry from the fields of curry flowers.
Aleja R — Google review
Really beautiful beach. Big waves so be careful when going in the water. Especially coming out its hard and the waves crash into you hard. Also we took the train that brought us there, you can walk but it’s a little over 1km. The ticket is 2 euros one way.
Elodie J — Google review
A really lovely beach, there is a train that you can ride or you can walk alongside the train track. Train was approx €2 each way and super family friendly. The beach is spectacular and the tuna fishing anchors are a lovely thing to view on your way to the beach. There are cafes, bars and restaurants. Public toilets are free and spotless. Overall a fantastic beach!
Alex B — Google review
Lovely part of the island accessible by a miniature train should you wish. Nice cafes and restaurants and gorgeous beach. Much quieter than the ferry end of the island. Lots to read about the tuna industry and the cemetery of anchors to view

Tavira Island

Island
Nature & Parks
Tavira Island is an 11-kilometer-long barrier island located just off the city of Tavira. Accessible only by boat, it offers stunning white-sand beaches with clear waters, perfect for swimming and basking in the sun. Visitors can reach the island from Tavira's marina or nearby Quatro Aguas via boat, or by taking a tourist train from Santa Luzia during the summer.
Be careful when the sea tide in you can be stoked in the island
Nino C — Google review
The island is approx. 1.5km circular walk. Lovely white sands and clear waters although there were quite a few jelly fish. All your expected beach amenities are there - restaurants, bars sundowners areas for those not wanting the loungers. Relatively quiet in the morning. Got busier in the afternoon.
Maria 6 — Google review
One of the Algarve’s most inviting and laid-back beach destinations, perfect for a relaxed day trip or a longer seaside escape. Accessible by ferry from Tavira, the island offers a long stretch of soft golden sand, calm turquoise waters, and a peaceful, undeveloped vibe that contrasts nicely with some of the busier resort beaches in the region. The beach is wide and clean, with plenty of space even during high season if you walk a bit away from the main drop-off point. The water is generally calm and great for swimming, and the surrounding nature is part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, adding to the sense of tranquility and beauty. Near the ferry landing area, you’ll find a few casual restaurants, snack bars, and small shops where you can grab food, drinks, or rent umbrellas and loungers. The facilities are basic but sufficient—don’t expect luxury, but you’ll have what you need for a comfortable beach day. If you’re willing to walk farther down the island, you’ll find quieter spots and even some clothing-optional areas. It’s a great place to escape the crowds and enjoy a more natural beach experience. Keep in mind that there are no ATMs on the island and not every vendor accepts cards, so bringing some cash is a good idea. Also, shade is limited unless you rent an umbrella or bring your own. Overall, Ilha de Tavira is a beautiful and peaceful place to spend a day by the sea. It combines natural charm with just enough convenience and remains one of the hidden gems of the eastern Algarve.
R — Google review
We liked the way you get there. By ferry from Tavira, 20min or so. The island is very green, has place for picnic, restaurants and small shops. The beach is huge, very busy in summer!
Gala D — Google review
Great place and atmosphere. One of the best beaches in the Algarve. The island as all the services you need to spend fantastic a day or even a week.
Fernando R — Google review
Flat, wide beach reached by short ferry or tourist train. Even in busy months you can walk a bit and find space. Facilities are simple but reliable. Breezy conditions are common; a windbreak helps. Family-friendly and low-stress, with enough length for a proper beach walk.
Beatriz C — Google review
Enjoyed our time on Tavira island,Boat trip was only £2.20 return, with restaurants nearby, comfortable sunlounger ,They even had fish plastic bottle banks
Jessica K — Google review
Ilha de Tavira is a gem waiting to be discovered! This vibrant island is has restaurants, small shops, and jewelry vendors that offer a treasure trove of goodies. The beach is pristine and buzzing with energy, filled with people of all ages soaking up the sun and enjoying the lively atmosphere. You’ll love the convenient outdoor showers, perfect for rinsing off the sand before you head back home. Plus, getting to and from the island is a short ride on the inexpensive double-decker ferry. This island is a total must-visit when you're visiting in Portugal—it's an adventure you won't want to miss!

Nature & Parks
Barreta Island, also known as Ilha Deserta, is a secluded 7km-long island located in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Accessible by ferry or boat, it boasts a pristine nude beach and serves as a haven for migrating birds like spoonbills from September to November. The Santa Maria boardwalk offers a 2 km trail with stunning views of the ocean and the island's arid interior.
Desert Island is 45 min away from Faro with Katamaran or 15-20min with speed boat from Faro city, it’s very nice ride to island and when you arrive there are some stairs you need to take from the boat. It took as around 3 h to walk around the whole island and you have lovely views to see Atlantic Ocean, you will find amazing, huge seashells, nice pebbles, sea stars and many more interesting things. The water was clean and clear with a lovely beach to swim in, just need to be careful with powerful waves. After nice walk and swim you can visit the only restaurant in the island and the food there is amazing and fresh. There is also stunning view next to the lighthouse.
Indy R — Google review
Such a nice location. Visited for an afternoon and was lovely. Its slightly cooler than inland Faro which was nice. Not a cloud in the sky and the sea is crystal clear. Only costs €5 to get over on a 45 min boat ride. Would definitely recommend!
Josh P — Google review
The Barreta island, or Ihla Deserta, is a must see if you are in Faro. We visited in December, but the weather was still great for sunbathing and a swim. You can hike around the island, and stop any time for a swim or to enjoy the view. We got there using the ferry, which was 10€ with return for a 45' journey each way. We found that the side of the island where the ferry left us had better places to swim, as the water was calm, while it was pretty wavy & windy on the other side of the island. As the island is deserted, there is only one restaurant there, which can be pricey if you want to dine in, but we used their take away service and the sandwiches were reasonably priced and tasty.
Effie P — Google review
Wonderful, peaceful island. We were there off season. So not many people there a we could enjoy it more. I think, during the season it's a wonderful place for the lazy type of vacation. Just enjoy the sun on the beach
Pavol K — Google review
Lovely isolated beach to visit if you are looking to relax somewhere with few people. You can take the ferry from Faro that costs 5 euros and it takes around 45 mins to arrive or there is a faster option with shuttle that takes 15 minutes and it costs 10 euros. There is one restaurant at the island but it expensive so I would recommend to bring food if you don’t want to spend more money on food. There is an option to rent an umbrella with two chairs that costs 20 euros for the whole day. I think if you are planning to go 3-4 hours is enough to spend on the island! Beautiful views, the sand is so soft but the water cold!
Ioannis V — Google review
Nice , peacefull island. On the ocean side there are plenty of huge shells. It's wotth to take the walking path around

Faro Cathedral

Mentioned on
+43 other lists
Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The Igreja de Santa Maria, also known as Faro's Cathedral, is a Catholic cathedral with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. It was elevated to Se Catedral de Faro in the 16th century and still preserves some of its original architectural elements such as the bell tower and two chapels.
Ofcourse, must visit when in Faro for a great view of the Marina and sea. It was good to see the chapel of bones, museum but highlight for me was the tower, the views from the tower. There was not very long line for the tickets. Ticket was 5 £ pp. I would recommend visiting.
Shraddha — Google review
Lovely view from the top of the tower, the bells are in working order so be aware that they are loud if you’re quietly enjoying the scenery. There’s a display of historic clothing, which is interesting. The shrine of bones is small and missing all the skulls. The inside of the cathedral is quite impressive.
Marisa P — Google review
The Cathedral in Faro is a charming historic building with a lot of character. The real highlight is climbing the tower, where you get fantastic views over the old town and the surrounding area. That said, parts of the cathedral and museum feel a bit run down, and the €5 entrance fee seems a little steep for what’s on offer. It’s best to see the fee more as a small contribution to preserving the place rather than paying for a polished attraction.
Waldseeschloss — Google review
It’s absolutely worth a visit! The Cathedral is beautifully decorated and even has a charming little garden. Your ticket includes access not only to the Cathedral itself, but also to the museum, the fascinating bone chapel, and the tower. I especially appreciated the multilingual information provided for each piece of art, which makes it easy to understand the history behind them. Climbing the tower is definitely rewarding — it offers a wonderful panoramic view of the city. A very complete and enriching experience!
Attila F — Google review
Gorgeous cathedral in the historic centre built in the Gothic style in 1249 which replaced a Muslim mosque, itself built on a Roman temple ! Some notable vestiges of its origins remain, such as the tower and the large ogival portal. The two side chapels of the transept, surmounted by ribbed vaults, also in the Gothic style, date from the 15th century. Plundered and burned down in 1596, it was remodeled many times. Worth seeing are the late 17th-century azulejos that adorn the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário and the tomb of the knight Rui Valente.
Enjoy L — Google review
Very touristy, but it's a tourist area so you can expect nothing less. Still quite busy considering it's off peak. Doesn't seem to be to expensive. Getting around using the Bolt app.
Muddyboy C — Google review
It is beautiful, with great art from the Barroc. It is 5 euros. It is worth it. You can go up the tower with beautiful views.
Jaume E — Google review
Also known as Sé de Faro, is a decently looking and historically rich landmark located in the heart of the Old Town. It sits proudly in Largo da Sé, surrounded by cobbled streets and peaceful orange trees, offering a tranquil contrast to the more modern parts of the city. The cathedral combines Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements, reflecting the many changes it has undergone since it was first built in the 13th century. While not as imposing as some cathedrals in larger cities, its charm lies in the details like the intricately carved wooden choir stalls, decorative tiles, and peaceful inner courtyard. One of the highlights is the bell tower, which you can climb for panoramic views over Faro’s historic center and the nearby Ria Formosa lagoon. It’s a short but slightly narrow and steep ascent, so be prepared, but the view at the top is well worth the effort. The entry fee is modest and includes access to the cathedral interior, the tower, and a small religious art museum. It’s a quiet and contemplative stop that doesn’t take too long to explore but leaves a lasting impression thanks to its peaceful atmosphere and historical significance. The Cathedral i definitely worth visiting, especially if you’re already exploring the Old Town. It offers a calm and beautiful experience with a glimpse into the city’s religious and architectural heritage.

The Castle of Mértola is a medieval fortress that stands proudly atop a hill, offering commanding views of the surrounding landscape. While not the most aesthetically pleasing castle, it is the focal point of Mértola and well worth the trek to reach it. From the river, the town presents a picturesque scene with its stone walls and whitewashed houses culminating in this sturdy stone castle. Visitors can explore this historic site free of charge and soak in its ancient ambiance.
Great to walk about, we got in free, not sure if there is a ticket price A walk up the tower is a must, great view of the city Free public toilets outside and remains of a roman house
Helen C — Google review
Absolutely stunning!!! From a distance we sit and stare at the castle, but to walk up and around inside gives you a whole other perspective. Stunning scenic outlook being so up high, from all angles and so much history to absorb. Highly recommend! We loved it and are so glad we came to stay and experience the beautiful hillside town of Mertola in South Portugal.
Oliver T — Google review
Beautiful castle with a museum. Friendly staff. Beautiful view. Free enterence. Parking is difficult. Better let stay the car in the town and have a walk to the castle.

Castle of Mértola Type: castle Current price: free WC: located outside of the castle Path for disabled: not available Parking: available, small Bike parking: not available Public transport: Redexpressos bus, Rodoviária do Alentejo bus + 15 min walk Medieval castle built during the Islamic period. It was particularly rebuilt after the Reconquista, so the architecture is a combination of different styles. Next to it are more ancient ruins. Also, within the tower is a small museum with medieval items.
Oleh S — Google review
If you happen to be passing through then it is a worth a wander round the castle. As the views are good, looking in both directions along the Guadiana river and the town. Although it's not as spectacular as the castle at Beja.
Nuni R — Google review
Really enjoyed our visit. The town is fabulous around the castle with cobbled streets and picturesque buildings. It is a bit of a climb to the castle but not too bad. Once there, there is an excavation underway of roman ruins around the castle which is very interesting with plenty of view points. The castle offers fabulous views of the surrounding countryside. We visited in November and it was free.
Alan P — Google review
We stumped up on this little beautiful peaceful well maintained town on the way from Spain to Lisbon. The castle is so well maintained with all renovated levels that have wooden and marble stairs and museum floors with a local staff who was extremely nice and knowledgeable to tell us about the town. Everyone who worked here was so nice, proud and educated of their own town. The entry fee is FREE. I'm super impressed with how they very well managed to maintain their history, the whole neighborhood and castle. So much respect for these people and this town. The whole atmosphere is so peaceful and relaxing. We also stopped by a restaurant down the tiny street and the food was so delicious and healthy. Highly recommended!

The Aquashow Park Hotel in Quarteira is a vibrant and modern resort hotel with a seasonal water park, making it perfect for families seeking water thrills. The hotel offers unlimited access to the thrilling waterpark, featuring slides and rides suitable for all ages. For those seeking relaxation, there are Jacuzzis and lazy rivers, as well as dedicated areas for small children. Additionally, the hotel is conveniently located just a short drive from the beach and Vilamoura's golf courses.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We had such a wonderful stay at this hotel. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome and truly cared about ensuring all our needs were met. A special mention goes to our waiter, Cristiano – he was absolutely fantastic! Full of life, always ready with a funny comment, and he made every dinner an absolute joy. Each evening just got better and better, and we found ourselves looking forward to mealtimes as much as the rest of our stay. The service overall was outstanding, with genuine warmth and attention to detail that really stood out. We left with great memories, lots of laughter, and the feeling that this hotel truly deserves its 4 stars. Highly recommended!

I have just returned from a fabulous stay in the Aquashow Park Hotel. The cleanliness of the hotel was outstanding. Food was excellent and staff were so attentive and friendly. Nothing was a problem to them. We had access everyday to the waterpark and it was also excellent. I must mention Pedro on reception who had only started 15 days before we arrived. His personality is outstanding. The bar and restaurant staff were fantastic always smiling even at 7.30am. This hotel is rated a 4 star and in my opinion it should be a 5 star. Thank you to everyone for a wonderful stay

This hotel, staff, facilities and food was just perfect for our weeks stay in September. Our room was on the 4th floor and looked out over the waterpark and Quarteira were I witnessed every sunrise which was so very beautiful and different each day. The room, bathroom and balcony were spacious, clean and well equipped. A small fridge , free to use safe, toiletries, hairdryer and tv. The beds were very comfortable too. We stayed half board and the hotel is quieter by the 3rd week in September but this was also nice because their were no queues for tables or food. We have to give a special shout out to our waiter Cristiano who went above and beyond during our stay. The Aquapark attached to the hotel was clean with no queues this time of year and all the staff very helpful and friendly. I have a spinal condition so could only use the lazy river and my daughter and staff helped me on/off the lazy river every time. I was more than happy filming and photographing my daughter having the time of her life. Facilities at the park are excellent. Plenty of food/beverage outlets, rollercoasters, photographers, amusements and more. The location of the hotel is in a quiet area outside Quarteira itself but with easy access to the town, Vilamoura and Albufeira via bus, taxi or user so it was not a problem. We recommend this hotel and will hopefully return in the future.

We had a wonderful stay! The location is slightly out of town, but with a car it was no problem – only about 10 minutes to Vilamoura. This hotel is absolutely amazing for kids. There’s an indoor soft play area, an outdoor play area, and free access to the water park right next door. My baby is only 18 months, so still too young, but for children over 100cm it’s incredible – honestly one of the best water parks we’ve seen, and entry is free when staying at the hotel. Breakfast was solid (I’d give it a 4/5) – good variety, with fruit changing daily, and a decent coffee machine. The bar and staff were excellent, really attentive and friendly. A special mention to the kids’ entertainer, Teddy – he went above and beyond every single day, making the kids feel so happy and included. Reception staff were also fantastic – every request I made was handled quickly and with a “yes,” nothing was too much trouble. Little touches like having kettles and beach towels available with a refundable deposit were very handy too. All in all, a brilliant family-friendly hotel – highly recommend, especially if you’re visiting with kids!

Just returned from 10 day holiday here and we loved it! Hotel and water park are fabulous, clean and great for families! The staff at the hotel are kind, polite and attentive. They were super friendly to our children and couldn't do enough to help us as a family with anything. We are really impressed with the cleanliness at the park and the hotel, everyday all day there were people cleaning and tidying in and around both the water park and hotel. We will definitely be returning and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the hotel to others! Location is a bit remote but easy to get to local towns using the hotel taxi service or Ubers.

The staff at this hotel are amazing, honestly they all really need a pay rise. The reception, bar staff and restaurant staff can’t do enough for you. They’re so kind and make you feel really welcome. The food is also amazing. Yes there a few ants in the rooms but you’re in a hot country what can they do! They do their best to keep on top of it. Loads off stuff to do for the kids here also. The cleaning staff were also lovely. The staff here really do make this hotel, this was one of the best holidays me and my children have been on. I do really hope the owners of this establishment recognise how lucky they are to have such amazing staff. PAY RISE FOR ALL OF THEM!!!

Absolutely fantastic hotel, very clean rooms, friendly staff. Especially Restaurant staff customer service outstanding. Hotel equipped with amenities specifically for children. They have two pools indoor and outdoor. The Aquashow park is short walk from the hotel great for kids as well as adults. Would highly recommend

I had booked my stay at Aquashow Hotel well in advance through the HRS platform, and the very next day I called the hotel directly to confirm the reservation and ensure that access to the water park was included, even though it was a corporate rate. During that call, the receptionist spoke with her supervisor and clearly confirmed that with my reservation, access to the park would indeed be included. I trusted their word. After driving 5 hours to get there, we arrived at the hotel and, during check-in, I was told that park access was not included. I calmly explained the situation and even showed the phone record proving I had called them the day after the booking, which was a call lasting about 3 minutes. Despite this, the staff refused to take responsibility for the information they had previously given me. They contacted the hotel manager/administrator, who didn’t even come to speak with us in person. Her response was simply that she wasn’t interested in offering any adjustment or compensation, and that no tickets would be provided. Their only offer was either to accept the stay without park access or cancel the booking free of charge, which we ended up doing, because this kind of attitude and treatment is completely unacceptable. After five hours of driving, this was the reception we received. Absolutely unprofessional and disappointing.

Zoomarine Algarve in Portugal is a marine park that offers an array of attractions for the whole family. Visitors can enjoy seal and dolphin shows, explore an aquarium, and relax on a sandy beach with slides and a wave pool. The park is renowned for its diverse collection of marine animals, including dolphins, sea lions, and birds of prey. One of the highlights is the opportunity to interact with dolphins through the Dolphin Emotions experience, where guests can swim with these incredible creatures.
You cannot imagine better education, fun or water park than this! I really admire the people that organize it ❤️❤️ We spend 2 full days with our 7 year old daughter and it passed by like a second! We visited all the shows and they are all so funny, educational and nice to watch! Our favorite and most funny one are the Pirates one 💕 There are a lot of options where to eat, we choose “all you can eat one”. There is decent food choice and a lot of fresh salad and fruits. Can really recommend it! We tried also all fun attractions and really liked them all! Bonus are butterfly house and the oceanic house ❣️ Overall experience really 10!
Vanja P — Google review
Zoomarine was absolutely amazing, it is one of the best theme parks i have ever been to. It was so clean and organized. I love the option to bring in our own food, I only wish there were more vegan options in keeping with the educational theme of protecting our oceans, being more mindful of species diversity and being champions for conservation. The shows and exhibits were wonderful and educational. The rides were so much fun and since we went after the summer rush, it was perfect in terms of the weather, ability to get onto rides multiple times with little to no wait times. Our four year old had her first introduction to both roller coasters and water slides and it was perfect for that as well. She will have to be 6 before we can swim with the dolphins and we will definitely go back for that experience. I have worked at Disneyworld, Orlando and I didn't think another park could touch that experience but Zoomarine has in many ways and I am moved by their mission, vision and executing both. It is also just a stunningly landscaped park.

We had an awesome day here today, great family fun. The day was absolutely packed. We were off season (October), when part of the park is closed; and still didn’t get close to seeing everything. It’s a really good mix of animal shows, animals and rides. If you’re from the UK I really can’t think of anything quite like it. If you’re on a longer holiday, and staying closer than we are I can see the benefit of the two day ticket, that would be great value. I must recommend the animal shows, especially the dolphins they were amazing! I didn’t get to them all but they were my favourite part. Day passed in a flash, I totally recommend.
Chris B — Google review
Amazing day beautiful well kept park everywhere spotless all animals looked very well cared for. Park very quiet which was actually wonderful was able to take so many more photos with no crowds no queuing for rides was fantastic. Food price very reasonable for a theme park. Thankyou for making our day so wonderful.

Had a fantastic day out at ZooMarine! The staff were extremely helpful, and everyone goes out of their way to make the experience enjoyable. We loved the shows – you could easily spend half a day watching them. Around 20–25% of the time is perfect for exploring the aquariums and rides. There’s also a lovely swimming pool with a wave pool and other water activities, which made for a great balance of fun. Just after finishing at ZooMarine, there are plenty of lovely restaurants nearby where we enjoyed a nice meal. A brilliant day out – highly recommended!

This has to be handsdown one of the best complexes I have ever been to especially for kids. The stuff and the shows are amazing along with the rides and other bits to do for the kids. I would definitely recommend to anyone on holiday in Portugal and I will definitely be coming back.

This place was amazing. Low season so was sad to see so much closed. But the animals and other activities kept us so busy we wouldn't have had time for it all anyway. The shows were so good. Dolphins sea lions the birds and the dances. I want to go back again. Definitely do the interactions with the dolphins weather meet or greets or the swim. Lovely day had bu all
Lauren N — Google review
What an amazing day out, 5 Stars all day long, went as a family of 4 had an amazing day out here, lots of attractions, shows, animal exhibits to look at exotic animals, both Land and Sea, we enjoyed the Dolphin show the most but we also enjoyed everything else we experienced that day, there was 2 things that annoyed us on the day but wasn't enough to reduce the score below 5 stars, first was the Sunbeds are charged extra based on location, 15 for best location, 10 for second best location etc, no need to be charging paying guests extra to use Sunbeds, second thing was we got no information leaflet when we arrived detailing the attaraction locations or show times, because of this we had not managed our time well in the park and missed a few of the shows and attractions as we didn't know when and where they were on. All in all though a fantastic day out and well worth a visit, we probably needed a second day to see it all, I would 100% go again if we are holidaying in the Algarve 👍

This breathtaking landscape of tall golden cliffs and translucent azure waters attracts artists, photographers, and visitors from around the world.
sandy beach, there is another one nearby where the entrance is through a cave (it is more secluded and small) beautiful view of the rocks from above. There are no sunbeds or umbrellas, you need to take everything you need with you. There is also a cafe on the beach, and before the descent to the beach there are a couple of open-air stalls with fruits, sandwiches, water and other things.

This unique golden sand beach is nestled at the foot of towering limestone cliffs, which have been eroded into unique formations by rain and winter storms. These formations include a double sea arch—the Arcos Naturais—which lies on the west side of the beach and is one of the most photographed natural features in the Algarve ! The Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos is a must-do for the most beautiful views and is located between Praia da Marinha and Praia do Vale de Centeanes, east of Carvoeiro. It runs along the Algarve's limestone cliffs, sculpted by the ocean over the centuries, and offers spectacular views of the beaches and sea caves, including the famous Benagil Cave ...

Yet another beautiful and quiet beach. Wide, sandy beach and maybe just our lucky day but funny thing the day we visited, there were several wedding couples out taking photos here. It was a beautiful day to takes photes but we were however a little surprised to see/experience that.

The beach is kind of small, but beautifully decorated with dramatic cliffs. There's a long walk with steps to enter the beach. A resturante is at the bottom. Parking is challenging, the road was closed off and we ended up finding street parking 20min away from the entrance. Water closets and food trucks (that take credit card) are by entrance.
Toni S — Google review
CASH ONLY. Loved it here although maybe check if seaweed has washed up before visiting as I couldn’t swim in it. I wish I knew before that it was all cash only as I didn’t bring much. It’s cash only to rent umbrella and lounger. You will need an umbrella for cover as there was no sheltering from it.
J K — Google review
Stunning beach! End of Aug/1st week of Sept, one of the only beaches on the south coast that had no seaweed piled up on the shore. It's just pure sand, can walk out very far! It's the Atlantic, so water is very cold but refreshing. Recommend neoprene for kids. Check out the caves to the right (west), they are incredible
Matt M — Google review
Beautiful beach. Really worth the visit if you are in the Lagos area (or nearabouts). Please take some slippers with you in order to get inside the water as the entrance is quite rocky. Also, the parking fills up pretty early (as it is quite a crowded beach), and once that occurs, the transit police blocks the road down the access to the beach. So please expect a 15-20 minute hike to arrive to the beach.
Delfi D — Google review
This was a fabulous place to visit! The views are breathtaking and the hike was fairly easy! Wear hiking shoes or sneakers as it can get rocky. Definitely worth the trip but go early as the parking fills up hickory and then it gets challenging

Its most notable feature is the nearly 40-meter high keep, which offers stunning views from the highest viewpoint in the region.

Beja Castle is a remarkable slice of Portuguese history, beautifully preserved in the Alentejo region. The castle dates back to the 13th century, with a unique mix of architectural styles that reflect its long and varied past. The towering keep, which is one of the tallest in Portugal, offers stunning panoramic views over Beja and the scenic Alentejo plains—it’s absolutely worth the climb! Exploring the inner courtyard, walls, and towers feels like stepping back in time, and there are informative plaques throughout to give context to the castle’s role in the region’s defense. The surrounding gardens add to the charm, making it a peaceful spot to relax and take in the view. This is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, architecture, or photography. Beja Castle combines historical depth with beautiful scenery and is an ideal destination for a memorable day out in Alentejo!

Castelo de Silves is a sprawling Moorish-style sandstone castle located in the charming town of Silves, Portugal. The town, situated on the banks of the River Arade, offers visitors a glimpse into the authentic and turbulent past of The Algarve. With its narrow cobbled streets and hilltop castle, Silves exudes a distinct Medieval ambiance. Exploring the old town feels like stepping back in time, with winding streets and glimpses of rich history at every turn.
This castle is definitely worth a visit! It’s not expensive at all, and once you’re inside, you can stay as long as you like. Perfect for a laid-back outing. I went with a friend after a night of partying, looking for a more chill, “recovery” activity, and it was just what we needed. You can take your time enjoying the view, and there’s even a bar if you want a drink while you’re there. There’s also a museum inside, but that part costs extra. We skipped it and instead took a lovely stroll around the castle grounds… which is absolutely worth it on its own. Just a heads-up: if you walk down the hill, you’ll need to walk back up too. But it’s manageable and adds a bit of adventure. Bonus: there’s a free parking area not far from the castle, and it usually has plenty of space.

Silves Castelo is absolutely stunning. From the moment you arrive, you can feel the history in the air. The castle sits high on a hill, giving amazing views of the town and the surrounding countryside. Walking through the ancient walls is like stepping back in time. The stonework is well preserved, and the architecture is impressive. Every corner has something interesting to see. The guides are friendly and knowledgeable. They share fascinating stories about the castle’s past. You can learn a lot without feeling rushed. The pathways are well maintained, making it easy to explore. There are plenty of spots to take photos. Sunset here is magical. The lighting on the castle walls makes it even more photogenic. The town below is charming. You can see the red rooftops and narrow streets from the castle walls. There are benches to rest and enjoy the view. It is a peaceful place despite being popular with tourists. The entrance fee is very reasonable. There are signs with information in multiple languages. Parking nearby is convenient. Overall, visiting Silves Castelo was a highlight of my trip. I would recommend it to anyone who loves history, architecture, or just beautiful views. Definitely five stars
Felix S — Google review
Great visit – highly recommend! Very affordable and absolutely worth it. The castle is beautiful and the tower walk offers nice views, though it would be even better with some context or a leaflet explaining what you see. There are a few multilingual panels, which is great. The lady at the entrance was extremely kind and spoke several languages, which made the visit even nicer. The exhibition in the cistern (lynx, etc.) is interesting, though it feels a bit dated. On the plus side, there’s a cafeteria and restrooms inside the monument. Unfortunately, the cafeteria has very few vegan options, which is a pity.

A great old castle to explore. Entrance fees are minimal at £2.80/adult. Kids were free. Over 65 was half price. QR code app to get more information while you explore. Lack of handrails definitely made some people leary about walking perimeter walls. Neat courtyard with date and olive trees.
Jer S — Google review
Highly recommend this place. Only cost €2.80 for adults and kids free. Lots to explore and some fantastic views from the castle wall walk. There’s a cafe and toilets and most of the castle you can push a buggy around. Definitely very good value for money and looked like they were improving bits when we were there. A great morning out!

As the largest beach in Lagos, it offers a relaxed atmosphere with calm waves and crystal-clear waters thanks to wind protection from the nearby cliffs of Ponta de Piedade.

When we arrived, it was a bit windy and cloudy, but that actually made it perfect for a long walk along the beach. 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️ The beach itself is huge, with plenty of space for everyone. Both the walking trail and the beach were very clean, we didn’t spot any litter or excessive seaweed. A really pleasant spot to relax and enjoy nature. 🏵

A great sandy beach, 4 km long. There are a few beach bars where you can get food and drinks, as well as sunbeds, which cost €15 for two. Near the canal, there's a small boat (Vai Vem) that takes you to the beach for €1 per person in less than a minute. It's a great option if you don't want to walk for 30 minutes.

One of my favorite beaches in Lagos! I’m too afraid of being at the bottom of the cliffs on the small beaches like Dona Anna and recommend this location for safety and great walking opportunities as it’s really long.

Kilometers of sandy beach goodness! For a city beach, you just can not top this, by foot from the Lagos center or by car, in a few minutes you are on a beautifu windyl beach! There are lifeguards everywhere, every 200m there is a bar with deck chairs and parasols (15eur for two usually), there are places just to put your towel down and enjoy your time on the Arlantic coast! Beach was clean and well maintained, but unfortunately, we did not see any showers.

Great for walking and running! The trail is in excellent condition and easy for anyone to enjoy. From sunrise to sunset, it’s a peaceful place with beautiful views - just keep in mind that in summer it can get quite hot, as there’s not much shade along the way.

This place was beyond amazing. The views of the rock formations are mesmerizing. I did not want to leave. We arrived on the first day at 6:30 pm to see the sunset. It was cloudy but we stayed a while and the sky turned beautiful hues of pink. We returned the next day to get a better view of the rock formations. There's a lot of boardwalks to explore the areas. On the left side, there is a staircase that will take all the way down to the water and you have an option to pay for a boat ride; which last about 30-40 minutes that will take you through the grotto. I did not utilize this service due to lack of time, but I highly recommend it. Behind the small lighthouse you will find a small Cafe offering light snacks, with tables and chairs. Large parking lot available a short walk away with plenty of parking. The earlier you go the better to avoid large crowds.

One of the best trips and moments of 2025! It was a perfect spring day (March) —no clouds, no wind, just a refreshing cool breath out on the ocean. The views of the rock formations were stunningly beautiful: arches appearing one after another, the sea shifting from deep blue to light turquoise and emerald green depending on where you were. Sunlight reflected off the cliffs, changing their colors from yellow to orange to rich brown. Our guide navigated skillfully and pointed out the names of unique formations—camels, elephants, even “the Kissing Couple” arch where we were suggested to kiss each other going throgh it. Thinking of the history, it’s humbling to realize how many thousands of years it took to shape such landscapes. We used the Days of Adventure for an tour operator. The boat trip cost €20 per person for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, and it was worth every cent. It’s a completely different perspective compared to the hiking trail above, which is free and also offers spectacular views. But being out on the water, surrounded by cliffs and arches, made this experience unforgettable. The natural beauty is beyond words: stunning, breathtaking, amazing.

Absolutely incredible. Worth the visit and the long walk down the stairs. We saw Dolphins playing down in the water and every angle and view point felt like it was worth it. Such an amazing place.

Most wonderful trail you’ll find in a v long time! Easy access and lots of wooden platforms available for those who do not feel like walking into the rocks. Saying the view was gorgeous is simply an understatement. You need to visit if you’re close. A must for everyone lucky enough to get to Lagos.

This place was extraordinary, captivating and better than imagined. If you are within 100 miles of this place, can walk a mile, go up and down stairs, make it happen is all that I can say. A highlight of my trip:)

Praia do Camilo is a picturesque beach in Algarve, Portugal, accessed by descending 200 wooden steps to a sheltered cove divided by ochre-colored rocks with a hand-dug tunnel. It is one of the tiny coves curtained by low cliffs in the area. The beach is popular on Instagram due to its iconic staircase and stunning views, making it advisable to visit early for a less crowded experience.
Full of seaweed today, but still a must-see. The beach and water were completely covered in seaweed today, so swimming wasn’t really an option. That said, the cliffs and views are stunning as always. Arrive early if you want a spot on the sand — the beach is very small at high tide.
Snejana F — Google review
Lovely beach to take pictures and maybe go for swim but there’s not a lot of place to swim. There little to no tide, making it very calm. There’s a short cave entrance that can take you the beach next door. There’s also another cave that you can enter. The smell of seaweed can be quite strong but it gets better
Charbel H — Google review
After reading blogs about best beaches to visit in the area this one kept going up. And they were right. Despite the 247 stairs, the beach was the perfect spot. There are two sides to it and both are great. Even though there are a lot of stairs to make your way up to the top you will want to stay on the beautiful beach so don’t get discouraged.
Kenzie W — Google review
Superbly nestled between jagged cliffs, this beach has a small shoreline reached by a staircase of about 200 steps, from which you can admire a dazzling landscape as you descend... Nearby, and accessible by the same road, is Ponta da Piedade, an impressive rock formation with jagged shapes and caves carved out by the sea. It's one of the region's landmarks, and can be admired in its entirety during a boat trip, exploring the interiors of the caves and the small, deserted beaches nestled in the rocks !
Enjoy L — Google review
Lovely, interesting beach with lots of stairs, so be prepared. But it is worth it. Very unique and kind of hidden beach with lovely water and its own tunnel to go through to get to the other side of the beach. There is a little bar/cafe at the bottom.
Martina ( — Google review
We had high expectations after reading that this is one of the most beautiful beaches in Lagos. We arrived early, around 6 AM, hoping to catch the sunrise here. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t match the hype, the beach was covered in seaweed and had a strong, unpleasant smell, with very little clean space to walk around. In the end, we decided to head to the neighboring beach instead.
Monica M — Google review
There are steps involved, the beach is not too big, and there are people. So why 5 stars, because it's a cools beach
Mark T — Google review
One of the most beautiful and iconic beaches in the Algarve, and a must-visit if you’re staying in or near Lagos. Tucked between dramatic golden cliffs and accessible by a long wooden staircase, the beach offers stunning views from above and a peaceful, sheltered cove below. The water is crystal clear and perfect for swimming or light snorkeling when conditions are calm. The rock formations and small caves add a sense of adventure, especially if you explore around low tide. The sand is soft and clean, though space is limited, so arriving early is a good idea—especially in peak season when it fills up quickly. There are no sun loungers or rental services on the beach itself, so bring your own towels or umbrellas if you plan to stay a while. There’s a small café at the top of the cliffs near the stairs, offering snacks, drinks, and a great vantage point. Praia do Camilo combines natural beauty, great swimming conditions, and a bit of effort to reach, which helps keep it feeling special. If you’re up for the stairs and want a postcard-worthy beach experience, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

This apartments is situated only 300 meters from the beautiful beach of Praia da Dona Ana. It is finished to a very high standard and perfect for relaxing holidays. There are also many shops, restaurants and bars close by.
Have stayed here a few times now, rented via a local agent and have always had a great time. Apartment is very clean and well looked after, has everything we need for our family of four. Nice pool and only a 10 min walk into Lagos centre. Plenty of options for food out, or a local walk down to Donna Anna beach or the head land.

Visitors can enjoy guided hikes to explore the mountain's rich natural beauty, including its forests and pristine air. The journey to Fóia is an enjoyable experience with well-maintained roads leading to ample parking areas.
Always amazing views with clear sky, was fun exploring with all the thick fog surrounding me and the visibility reduced to 3m, I highly recommend visiting during the summer escaping the heat of the city and enjoy the view, but if you seeking adventure I can recommend it as well 👌🏻in a foggy day

Amazing, must visit. The drive up the mountain top is worth it by it self. If you drive slowly enough there is lots of balconies/road sides to stop and admire the views. When visiting the mountain in May there was hardly any people. Made a friend with a local dog who visits the mountain from close by farm/house.

A great walk to the summit - but the summit itself is deeply scarred by all the ugly towers. It’s quite awful at the top and we could let get away from it fast enough.

Fóia is a superbeautiful place to visit! It is the place from which you can see almost over all the Algarve. You can see west and southcoast coming together, you can see almost all coast cities and being there with having that view is just breath taking but also breath giving! The ride up there is fun, with decent to good roads, miradouro just below the top and a good parking area on top! On weekdays dyring the day its not crowded, but it can be in weekends. There is also a café and an Artisenal store next to the parking lot. Quite enjoyable too! Make sure you are daring to drive up to the mountain, if comming from the NL and you have never driven hills or mountains it can be quite a challenge, just make sure you dont try to shift up gears to quickly. I never had problems with it but i have seen people struggling with their cars or even (camper) vans.

That being said plenty of parking on the roads leading to and from the beach and there is plenty of room for everyone to spread out there towels and umbrellas.

Badoca Safari Park

Nature & Parks
Open trailer rides in a 90-hectare safari park with 600 animals from around the world.
Absolutely fantastic park and a super nice experience. The safari, the lemurs, and the water park are worth every penny. I would like to give a huge shoutout to all the staff there. Everyone we came into contact with was super nice and extremely helpful. Big thank you to the man who was handling the reptile show, who took extra time for us at the end during the petting part, teaching us a little more about the bearded dragon and went above and beyond to help my mom feel confident enough to pet a reptile for the first time in her life. You're the best 👌 🩷 a big thank you!
Mariana D — Google review
Nice safari park with most animals given plenty of space. The 1hr safari ride at 4pm is a nice touch. Nicely laid out with animal shows every hour. The water rafting is great fun also. Could easily spend 3+ hours at the park. The safari could do with a bit more range of animals.
Paul M — Google review
This is a park very well maintaned, with space for wild life, majority of animals are free. The staff is very friendly and explains everything. The place has well maintained bathrooms, and places to buy food or to sit down and eat food that has been taken from home. The extra experiences like lemur its totally worth it - they super cute, lovely and they jump on top of you while they explain about their ecosystem and how they behave.

Badoca Safari Park Type: zoo, safari park Price: +/- 23 EUR (adult), +extra prices for activities (rafting, photos with animals, VIP experience, etc.) Time spent: 5h+ Parking: large Bike parking: random place Restaurants: available WC: available Path for disabled: requires additional help Normal tickets include: Safari ride, 3 shows (birds - 30 min, lemurs - 15 min, reptiles -15 min - all in Portuguese(!), twice per day each), zoo. (!)Shows, Safari, Rafting are scheduled. Restaurant prices: 10-15 EUR/menu (it's a normal price for this type of places in Portugal). The place looks like Tapada de Mafra and Lisboa Jardim Zoológico. Part of it is a zoo, and the other one is a Safari park, where animals are walking where they want, so not every time they come close to you - depends on the weather and their decision. It's not a Disney cartoon, it's a wild nature, even if it's organised by humans. The road is dusty and it's normal for this type of place. The Safari ride takes 45 min. How to get there? From Santiago by car - 7 min, by bike - 25 min, buses are rare, bus stops are not close to the park. To the owners of this business: you can add an online option "Safari taxi" for the visitors from Santiago, Grândola, Sines.

Fabulous day out for all the family! Highly recommend paying to see the Lemurs and for the water rapids, too! It's a very chilled atmosphere and wasn't too busy when we visited on a Monday in July.
Susie L — Google review
Nice experience but I was expecting better organization. You have weird timing to follow for different activities and it becomes confusing. We just visited safari and also took lemur interaction which is a very cool experience. But pretty expensive hence you already pay for access. They do not allow to take pictures there with lemurs and doing photo - and then sell for €12 which makes it weird. They did 2 photos of wife and child and asked 12 per each… We missed other activities due to weird timing so I would rate overall experience as 3.5
Ruslan P — Google review
Lots and Lots to see.It was great having over an hour and half to visit and learn about the various animals in the park ( not a Zoo). Safari was great and you forget you are in Portugal not in Africa. The Park soon becomes a Safari and Ranch with so many different bugger animals. My absolute highlight was getting within touching distance of the majestic Giraffes 🦒 that came round our transport just freely walking back & forth...truly Magical ✨️ The only thing I was dissapointed in was fact none of the talks, tours etc were in English and was told quite abruptly...only in Portugese! I am entry level 1 but surely you need consider some visitors come from across the World to support the park ?
Christine E — Google review
The overall experience did not fully align with pre-visit expectations. Although the park offers a sizable area, the observed animal population appeared somewhat restricted. The associated costs for a family of four presented a perceived premium. It is acknowledged that the upkeep of the park and the care of the animals necessitate substantial financial investment. The primary area of concern centered on the safari ride, which was conducted exclusively in Portuguese. Despite communicating a preference for English, the tour proceeded without accommodating this request. This required the continuous use of a mobile translation device during the ride. Furthermore, all scheduled shows were presented in Portuguese; therefore, visitors should be prepared for this.

Sublime Comporta is a luxurious rural accommodation that offers an array of well-lit rooms, suites, and villas. This upscale nature retreat is situated in a picturesque 17-hectare estate enveloped by beautiful pine forests, cork trees, dunes, rice fields, and pristine white-sand beaches. The lodging options are spread throughout multiple buildings and include cabana-style villas ranging from two to five bedrooms.
I can not speak for the rooms but the grounds here are stunning and so tranquil. We came on a guest pass for the week for the gym and found the staff lovely. Gym was small but well equipped and nicely maintained with a beautiful view. Breakfast was delicious each morning and we enjoyed an evening in the round table restaurant with a tour of the gardens and wine pairing at dinner. Fantastic experience.

The hotel grounds are really beautiful and peaceful. The pool area and common spaces look great and the food is very good. The staff is also amazing. Everyone we met was kind, helpful, and friendly. But the rooms were a big disappointment. Ours was small and plain, with almost no decoration. It looked more like a small New York apartment or a basic Marriott room than what you’d expect from a hotel this expensive. The linens felt like the kind you might buy on Amazon, not soft or special. For how much the hotel costs, the rooms should be much nicer. Also, the beach is a 10-minute shuttle ride away, which we knew, but the shuttle only leaves once an hour. This is a beach town and most people go to the beach during the day, so it doesn’t make sense. If you miss the shuttle, you have to wait another hour, which is not what you’d expect at a hotel like this. The setting is beautiful and the staff is wonderful, but the rooms and beach access really took away from the overall experience.

A beautiful retreat to relax and enjoy quality service and food with a beautiful beach in nearby Comporta. The two beach clubs, JNCQuoi and Sublime, are also upscale and wonderful. It seems like the surf is not as rough in Comporta, however. FYI. (The two beach clubs are fantastic and definitely worth visiting though). I had two fantastic massages in the spa. Thank you, Joana and Katia- I feel so much better and really enjoyed meeting both of you; you’re top-notch!

Absolutely loved our visit here! Felt like I was staying at a resort that White Lotus would film at. Stayed in room 8 which I feel is a great location to the gym, spa and main restaurant. Breakfast is fabulous and nice that it is included. Had dinner one night and had the Sole for two - 10/10. Service at this hotel is outstanding. My only complaint which is minor, better lighting at night when walking back to your room. Highly recommend this beautiful resort.

The location and grounds are beautifully kept. Sadly the quality of the experience makes it hard for me to recommend this location to any of my American friends in search of a place to unwind in luxurious stillness. 🚨 Most alarming: I found the staff to be quite dishonest about the services we were interested in. We were even charged a fee for something that was phrased as complimentary when offered. When I explained my confusion given the wording, management was unmoved and offered no concession for the miscommunication. It was a bit disappointing to say the least. For anyone hung up on Sublime, we have been shopping around for wedding venues so I will edit this post with my top recommendations in the coming months 💕

Praia Tróia Mar is a stunning beach located on the Troia Peninsula, just a ferry ride away from Setubal. This paradisiacal destination offers calm and transparent waters, soft white sands, and an 18km long coastline to explore. The microclimate of the area allows for enjoyable visits throughout the year, with plenty of activities to indulge in. Praia Tróia Mar is described as picturesque and family-friendly, offering miles of beautiful beaches to explore.
Gorgeous beach, super soft and fine sand and during low tide a shallow sand bar appears that you can walk/swim to! The ferry over runs very often as well.

The water is freezing and the sand scorching. It could have better infrastructure with more hammocks and sunshades. It was 41 degrees today which is unbearable for most people. On the good side, it has a beautiful deck leading to the beach and the marine is beautiful.

Have died and gone to heaven. Was introduced to Troia by a tour guide when we visited the National Park Arrabida and I knew straight away Troia was where I was going to stay for my last 3 days in Portugal. The Troia Peninsula is very similar to the Whitsundays in Australia. The sand is soft and white, and being a sand snob I would rate it 9/10 and especially so when low tide you can walk across the vast sand banks out to the Atlantic. No seaweed and the water is calm, although freezing/refreshing. Troia sand, views and waters beat Albufeira, Carvoeiro - the Algarve in general by a long shot! It is even better than Cascais but equivalent to natural beauty Adraga. Adraga has waves for those wave catchers. Renting a shared lounge is expensive, €25 for the entire day. Well worth travelling out here, off the beaten track! Lifeguards are at every beach around Troia and they even help kids in wheelchairs to get from the boardwalk to the beach! Great service Troia Rescue. How to get here / heaven: 1) Bolt/Uber from Lisbon to Setubal wharf (Atlantic ferry) = €25-35 and can take 45-60mins. Train is about €10. 2) Passenger Return ferry or speed boat is €9-10 leaving every hour during weekdays and almost every 30mins on weekends. They allow dogs on the ferry! 3) There is also the option of driving your vehicle over via Atlantic Ferry as well. 4) Troia itself is quite small so you can walk everywhere with well designated footpaths and boardwalks. The supermarket is pretty good, has almost everything including roast chicken. Portuguese people are friendly and it felt safe

If you’re looking for an unspoiled, peaceful beach far from the typical tourist crowds, Tróia Beach is a true gem. Located on the Tróia Peninsula, directly across the bay from Setúbal, this spot offers stunning views and a rare sense of calm – even in the heart of summer. The crystal-clear waters shimmer with shades of turquoise, and the long, sandy shoreline is perfect for barefoot walks, sunbathing, or simply listening to the waves. It’s a free beach, meaning no umbrellas, no beach bars – just pure, untouched nature. Even during peak season, you’ll often find yourself alone or with just a few others around. It truly feels like a deserted paradise. 🚗 How to get there: The most scenic and convenient way to reach Tróia is by ferry from Setúbal: The car and passenger ferry departs regularly from the Setúbal ferry terminal (Terminal Fluvial) and takes about 25 minutes to reach Tróia. Alternatively, you can take the passenger-only catamaran, which is slightly faster and perfect if you’re not bringing a car. Once you arrive, the beach is easy to access on foot or by bike. Some areas are completely wild, so it's a good idea to bring water, food, and everything you need for a relaxing day by the sea.

Incredible beach— can’t say enough good things about it! My family and I absolutely adore it. We’ve been staying in Setúbal for the past week, and we’ve been visiting this beach almost every day. The beach takes a bit of work to get to, but it’s absolutely worth it. The ferry from Setúbal to Tróia is €26.40 for 3 people. It’s a 12-15 minute ride, and it’s a lovely experience. The views are gorgeous, and I’d recommend taking the 7:30 pm ferry back to Setúbal to catch the sunset. Once you arrive on the peninsula, you walk about 20-25 minutes along a wooden boardwalk to reach the beach. It’s a picturesque walk, and you get to pass a outdoor cat colony. The cats are so sweet, and they appear to be cared for by the locals. The beach is magnificent. There was a warm breeze every day we were there, which kept the flies away. The sand is so soft and sparkly and not too hot. For context, we are visiting in late September. The water is cold, but you can definitely acclimate. It’s so blue, clear, and clean. At low tide, there are amazing sand bars, and you can walk pretty far out. I was also able to collect some gorgeous shells. Finally, there are ample trash cans and a clean bathroom. This beach as everything I want in a beach. I truly adore it.

Calm waters, really beautiful but usually very full... It has all the amenities you need, it's fairly easy to park either in the hotel park or the outside park behind it. You can always get a space in one of the concessions but if you don't want that just keep walking until you reach the end of the beach, you'll usually find a spot there.

One of my favorite beaches in Lisbon area, beautiful views, good infrastructure in the season (out of season unfortunately public toilet is closed, the same with beach bars, but there is plenty of bars and restaurants nearby).

It is an amazing place, really touristic, different shops and market for to buy any kind of food with good prices, I bought a cold cane of tea for only 85cent. The sea it is so clean and clear that even the water it is cold, looks like amazing for to swim in.

Just a lovely beach! We went early so it was not very crowded. There are many parking spots near the beach and if you want you can rent an umbrella. The water was just perfect and the beach was very clean. There are no showers so you should come prepared for that.

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Oceanário de Lisboa is a modern aquarium located in the Parque das Nações, east of Lisbon's main attractions. It is Europe's largest indoor aquarium and features a vast saltwater tank with a variety of marine life, including sharks. Visitors can explore habitats representing the North Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans where they can observe puffins, penguins, sea otters, and tropical birds. The aquarium is divided into four huge tanks representing each of the four oceans.
I recently visited the Oceanário de Lisboa, and it was an unforgettable experience! From the moment I stepped inside, I was captivated by the stunning architecture and the serene atmosphere that enveloped the entire complex. The design, which resembles a floating ship, is not only visually striking but also thoughtfully created to mimic the ocean’s ecosystems. The highlight of my visit was the massive central tank, home to an array of marine life, including graceful sharks, majestic rays, and vibrant schools of fish. Watching these creatures glide through the water was mesmerizing, and the panoramic viewing windows allowed for incredible close-up encounters. It felt like peering into a different world! The exhibits were well-organized and informative, covering various marine habitats, from the Antarctic to the tropics. I particularly appreciated the educational aspect, with engaging displays that provided insights into marine conservation and the importance of protecting our oceans. The interactive elements kept both kids and adults entertained, making it an ideal family outing. Additionally, the staff was friendly and knowledgeable, always willing to share more about the exhibits and answer questions. Their passion for marine life and conservation was evident, adding to the overall positive experience. The Oceanário de Lisboa is not just an aquarium; it’s a commitment to educating visitors about the importance of our oceans and the creatures that inhabit them. I left feeling inspired and more aware of the environmental challenges we face. If you’re in Lisbon, this is an absolute must-visit destination! Whether you’re a marine enthusiast or just looking for a wonderful day out, the Oceanário de Lisboa promises to be a highlight of your trip.

The oceanarium was definitely a highlight of our Lisbon trip; it wasn’t as straightforward to get to as other attractions, but I would recommend the journey nonetheless. From central, the best way is to get there via the Red Line on Underground Metro, it’s pretty quick and is only a short walk to the oceanarium - and you can take in the ocean view of the cable cars and exhibition stadium. We had booked a 10:30 slot, though we could go through earlier with our QR codes. We visited on a Thursday, but there was a significant presence of school outings at the time of our visit. Though it didn’t detract from our experience, I can imagine it could irk some people with less patience! The place is well thought out but rather dark as you traverse between the areas; the main tank in the middle is clearly the main attraction and there’s several viewing points both below and above for you to see. The biggest highlight for us was the Sun Fish or Mola Mola - such a majestic looking bony fish and not one we’ve seen before in any aquarium. Outside of this, there were the sea otters which were very cute! The other animals were rather standard fare if you’re used to aquariums, but the main tank is quite a sight for anybody! The gift shop was a bit of a letdown, without much choice of gifts and at quite a high price. Understandably, the whole shop’s wares are sustainable and environmentally friendly - however, if you’re looking for a sun fish plush to take home with you to remind you of your experience; your out of luck I’m afraid!

I really recommend every tourist to visit this Oceanarium! Don’t miss this experience — it’s super interesting and really big. The ticket isn’t expensive, and we spent about two hours inside — it was truly unforgettable! Such an amazing place full of beauty, peace, and wonder. You can feel so close to marine life and learn a lot while enjoying the incredible atmosphere. I honestly loved every minute of it and truly recommend it to everyone visiting Lisbon! 🌊🐠💙

The Lisbon Oceanarium is definitely one of the city’s highlights and worth a visit if you’re in town. It features a beautiful central tank and some very cute otters. That said, while it’s nice, I found it a bit overrated. It doesn’t quite compare to the top aquariums around the world. For example, Singapore’s was on la completely different level. A thing that kind of ruined my experience is how crowded it can get. I visited at the end of October on a Friday and even though they limit the number of visitors, the cap still feels too high. It was hard to relax or enjoy the exhibits because of the crowds. By contrast, I enjoyed the aquariums in Gran Canaria and Tenerife much more, I could relax a lot more and it felt more immersive. If you plan to go, I’d recommend visiting in the middle of the week, early in the morning or close to closing time for a better experience. There’s a lovely gift shop with lots of cute plushies, I got 3 otters :) Overall, I do recommend it but just make sure to choose your visit time wisely.

The Oceanário de Lisboa is absolutely amazing! It’s one of the most beautiful and well-designed aquariums I’ve ever visited. The central tank is breathtaking — filled with graceful rays, sharks, and countless colorful fish swimming in harmony. The themed areas around it transport you to different ocean habitats, each beautifully presented and educational. Everything is spotless and well-maintained, and the staff are friendly and informative. It’s a fantastic experience for both kids and adults — peaceful, fascinating, and inspiring. Definitely a must-visit in Lisbon!

Oceanário de Lisboa A Must-Visit for All Ages What a beautiful place to visit! The Oceanário de Lisboa is an incredible experience for both kids and adults. I’ve been to many aquariums around the world, and this one truly stands out. The space is divided into four main sections, each representing a different ocean ecosystem, and it’s beautifully designed to let you explore marine life from every angle. The two levels of viewing from above and below make it even more impressive, giving you a full perspective of the sea life. From colorful fish and playful penguins to mesmerizing jellyfish and giant ocean tanks, every corner feels magical and educational at the same time. Overall, this aquarium is well-organized, clean, and thoughtfully curated a perfect mix of fun and learning. Highly recommend for families, couples, or anyone who appreciates the beauty of the ocean.

We got the private guide for 2, it was a great experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. Great value for money, definitely would recommend. We have booked our tickets on the same day in the morning, but would probably recommend booking more in advance as the guide for 2 has a more limited availability.
Ewelina — Google review
100% recommend. It was a bit expensive but if you are students, it’s worth it as there is a discount. The dark lit rooms were matching the aquarium vibes perfectly mixed with the rooms of the ecosystem of animals like penguins and otters.

The historic no. 28 tram winds through the neighborhood up to São Jorge Castle, offering stunning views from Miradouro da Graça terrace. Despite the mid-18th century earthquake, Alfama has preserved its medieval appearance with chaotic alleyways and small houses creating a village-like atmosphere.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Perched on a hilltop overlooking the city, Castelo de São Jorge is an 11th-century Moorish castle and former royal residence. Visitors can explore palace ruins and an archaeological museum within its walls. The castle offers panoramic views of Lisbon and is a popular tourist attraction in the historic Alfama district. Kids will enjoy racing around the ramparts, sitting on giant cannons, and using periscopes to observe daily life in the city below.
After visiting the Lisbon cathedral, we walked up to the arch entrance of the castle - it’s walkable but be wary of a steep trek from the cathedral. We were able to use our Lisboa Card for free entry, which was a great bonus. The castle grounds offer incredible views across the city and plenty of historic areas to explore. There are loads of great photo opportunities, and the grounds are home to around two dozen peacocks and peahens. I’ve never seen so many in one place before, and they really add to the atmosphere. The small museum inside is interesting and gives some insight into the history of the castle, including who built it, what it was used for, and a look at some of the pottery and tiles found on site. It’s also well air-conditioned, which makes it a nice break from the heat outside. Be warned that the toilets are pretty unpleasant and located down some narrow, slightly sketchy stairs. The main castle area itself is mostly empty, with only the walls open to walk along. The views are fantastic from up there, but it’s definitely not ideal if you’re afraid of heights. The walkways are narrow and can get crowded, and there’s only a railing to hold on to. We left just before sunset, and as we did, the queue to get in had grown a lot. Leaving early worked out well, as we were able to catch the bus back to the Rua with no hassle

(Although be warmed the steps are pretty steep and some have no handrails....careful! Sights were amazing and there is a QR Code.at.the entrance that gives you a self guided audio your with anlot of history. Awesome place and highly recommended!

Castelo de São Jorge is a stunning medieval fortress situated on one of Lisbon’s highest hills, providing visitors with magnificent panoramic views of the city, including the Alfama district, the Baixa area, the Tagus River, and the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge. The castle itself has a rich history, originally serving as a Moorish citadel before becoming a royal palace and later a military stronghold. Visitors can explore vast ramparts, eleven towers, archaeological sites, and remnants of the former royal palace, all set within beautiful gardens that are home to roaming peacocks, adding a unique and charming touch to the experience. The castle's grounds feel like a living museum where one can marvel at medieval defensive architecture, walk along ancient walls, and enjoy peaceful spaces shaded by olive trees and dotted with historical artifacts. Surrounding the castle, the neighborhood of Alfama offers a vibrant yet authentic atmosphere with narrow, winding streets, traditional tiled houses, cozy cafes, and small shops steeped in local culture. The area is known for its lively yet intimate vibe, enriched by the sounds of Fado music and the daily rhythms of local residents. Travelers often find themselves enchanted by the blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty, making the approach to the castle a meaningful journey in itself. The castle’s elevated position allows for stunning sunrise and sunset views across Lisbon, creating memorable photo opportunities and moments of reflection against the backdrop of terracotta rooftops and the sparkling river below. Visitors are recommended to arrive early to avoid crowds, as the castle tour, including its museum and archaeological areas, can take one to two hours. The pathway includes some steep climbs, but the well-preserved structures and the sweeping city vistas make the effort worthwhile. There are also small cafes within the castle grounds where visitors can pause and enjoy refreshments while taking in the scenic surroundings. Overall, Castelo de São Jorge offers a rich, immersive experience of historical, cultural, and natural heritage, making it a must-visit landmark for anyone exploring Lisbon’s fascinating past and vibrant present. The castle’s majesty, along with the lively charm of its surroundings, creates an unforgettable visit that reflects both the resilience and spirit of Lisbon.

Worth a visit! Castelo de São Jorge is a stunning historical place with breathtaking views over Lisbon and the River. Walking through the castle walls and towers and seeing the colors of the houses is really amazing. The gardens are beautifully maintained, and there are plenty of spots to take in panoramic views and photos. The audio guide added great context to the visit. Expect some walking and a few stairs, but it’s all part of the experience. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Lisbon!

Castelo de São Jorge in Lisbon is worth a visit for the views alone. Sitting on a hill in the Alfama district, it gives you a clear line of sight across the city and the Tagus River. There is something about seeing the red rooftops stretch out below that makes it easy to understand why Lisbon feels so special. The castle itself is interesting, even if it is not the most polished attraction. Walking along the ramparts and towers, you can sense the layers of history that have shaped this place. Roman, Moorish, and medieval influences are all visible in the walls and fortifications. The layout is straightforward, but exploring the nooks and stairs gives a sense of how people lived and defended the city centuries ago. One of the unexpected highlights is the peacocks. They wander freely across the grounds and gardens, adding a bit of life and color to the stone and brick. It is a small detail, but it makes the visit feel a little more playful. If you are in Lisbon, give yourself an hour or two to explore. Wear comfortable shoes because the paths are cobbled, and take your time to enjoy the history, the views, and the peacocks. Castelo de São Jorge is real, atmospheric, and memorable.

Amazing view, beautiful ruins, well kept, lots of nature, spacious areas. Unfortunately, this is not all. Multiple areas, view points, terraces were closed off, 2 of the 3 toilets didn't work and it looked and smelled disgusting. For 15 euros I'd hope for better but it's whatever.. However, what's not whatever is the behaviour of the staff. At 5:40 they were aggressively shouting at us that the place is closed, get out. They waved in front of our photos. When we said that the place is not in fact closed and we want to enjoy these 15-20 minutes one of them even more aggressively shouted that "you don't argue with me about this". We were following the signs and wanted to go out through the archeological site (where the official exit was according to the signs) as that was in the end but when we got there they sent us back to the entrance (where it said entrance only). They didn't even tell us why we couldn't. The arrogance and ignorance was mind-blowing. We just wanted to enjoy that beautiful historic sight and the view until we could.

This castle is situated on one of the highest hills and offers stunning panoramic view of lisbon. You can walk over the castle and towers which was fun. The place is overall well maintained and worth a visit. The route to get to the castle is walkable but be aware of the steep path. We visited this place during sunset and it was absolutely lovely and highly recommend visiting around sunset time. No advance booking required and we got the ticket upon arrival.

One of the many, many highlights of Lisbon is this castle on a high hill. You can wander around the complex and enjoy the spectacular views of the beautiful city. You can also visit an archeologic site with even older structures. The 'stairway to heaven' to a lower bastion of the castle shouldn't be missed. Early Sunday morning is a perfect time to avoid crowds.

Estrela At Lisbon - Tram 28 is a must-see attraction in Lisbon, offering a picturesque journey through the city's narrow streets and steep hills. This historic tram route is highly recommended in travel guides for its nostalgic charm and practical transportation. However, due to its popularity, it tends to be crowded with tourists, making it challenging to secure a comfortable spot on the tram.
Great fun both night and day. Free if you have the Viva 24 hour pass. You stop off at a number of places Alfama or just do the full circular route. Do not learn out of the windows unless you want to loose your head 😂
Michael C — Google review
To popular for its own good. It's nice to ride along on a rattling old tram through the narrow streets. But unless you really want to ride it until the end and the cemetery, then save yourself the hassle and the incredible queues. Get the Number 12. It does practically the same route through the old town and the narrow streets. Nowhere near as popular because you've all been told get #28. Almost guaranteed a seat and just as good a ride.
Danny B — Google review
This was interesting for a short time until you realized how rough the ride is. It isn’t a loop so it will take you a long way from anywhere you want to be. We jumped out and took a taxi back to our hotel.
Dr. B — Google review
WAY OVERRATED TOURIST TRAP! We waited for over an hour for this ride. It's luck of the draw in regards to your seats whenever the tram does arrive. If you are an unlucky and have to stand the entire ride then you really can't see much. Be aware that this tram also serves locals who ride it to get from point to point. On our particular ride we were all kicked off the tram barely a few stops into the route with no explanation of why we had to exit. So your options were to pay more money for either a taxi or hire another site seeing service like the Tut Tut , or wait for another tram that was definitely going to be crowded. If I could give less than a star I would have. Save your money and time and avoid this non customer service based trap.
John A — Google review
Well worth it. Avoid queues by starting your trip early. (08:00h) We walked back from the final destination to the center instead of taking the tram again. Don't let yourself be put off by all the negative comments.
D W — Google review
Horrible experience today. We waited in line for 2 hours, only to have 2 rude locals cut in front of us, then after boarding we're told it's only a 10 minute ride rather than the usual 30+ (due to some stupid Catholic holiday). No signs. No advance warning. It's just a tram... observe from the street and maintain your sanity.
Robert R — Google review
Not worth the 2 hour wait. Be advised!! Rides till cemetary. There you need to queue again to get back. Little to none alternatives from there. Take the 12. It’s a shorter ride, but with 100% relevance ;)
Jan V — Google review
Tram line 28 is probably the most popular route in Lisbon. Can get rather crowded but it is lots of fun rattling through the scenic narrow streets. You can buy a ticket from the driver for €2 for a single ride. The better way is to buy a 24h ticket for around €7, but you can’t get that on the tram. It makes financially more sense, allows you to ride as often as you would like and includes subway, funicular and the other tram lines, but you need to get it from a ticket booth or one of those little newspaper stands.
