Rila Monastery

Monastery
Sights & Landmarks
Rila Monastery is a popular cultural site with vibrant frescoes and a museum. The monastery stands out against the green mountains, offering stunning views. While reaching the monastery can be challenging, renting a car for the trip is recommended. Visitors can explore the church adorned with beautiful paintings and also visit the museum, kitchen, guest rooms, ethnographic museum, and tower by purchasing a combo ticket. The complex includes magnificent rooms with wood carving and painted ceilings as well as local clothing exhibits from different regions.
Visiting Rila Monastery felt like going down memory lane — I spent many childhood and teenage days here, and it’s just as breathtaking as I remember. The stunning mountain scenery remains unchanged, still full of peace and beauty. The monastery itself is very well maintained. I was also glad to see that the grave of King Boris III of Bulgaria is well cared for. A timeless place that never loses its magic.
Danni H — Google review
Incredibly beautiful spiritual site, highly recommended visiting if you’re in the area and can easily make a day trip out of it from Sofia! So much history in this site, the Monastery is free to enter but I would recommend a guided tour for a rich experience.
Dubzz — Google review
Beautiful Monastery and beautiful surrounding. The road from Rila to Monastery was magical as forest around this Autumn was like fairy tale. It was on and off rain so not many tourists came (perfect!). You are not allowed to take photos inside the church and walk into the residential area. Entry is free (not sure about museum as I didn’t get in)
Marta C — Google review
Best place to bei. Spiritual and cultural Highlight placed in magical mountain scenery. Parking ahead with a few Meters walkway possible free of Charge. Highly recommend. If you avoid peaktime, than It ist more relaxing. Full around noon.

Magnificent and unforgettable! Rila Monastery is truly one of Bulgaria’s greatest treasures. The architecture is stunning, surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery, and the atmosphere is peaceful and spiritual. The frescoes and details inside are incredible — a must-visit for anyone traveling in Bulgaria. Absolutely worth the trip from Sofia!
George G — Google review
Rila Monastery is truly breathtaking. Nestled in the mountains, it feels like stepping into a peaceful world far removed from everyday life. The architecture is stunning—colorful arches, intricate frescoes, and beautifully preserved details everywhere you look. The courtyard is especially magical, with the striped façade and central church creating a postcard-perfect view. Inside the church, the frescoes are extraordinary and worth taking your time to appreciate. The surrounding nature is equally impressive; the fresh mountain air and quiet trails make the whole visit feel rejuvenating. Parking and access are straightforward, and there are small shops nearby with local treats and souvenirs. A must-visit if you’re in Bulgaria—both for its history and its serene atmosphere.
Ali A — Google review
Rila Monastery is about a 1.5-hour drive from Sofia, nestled deep in the mountains. It’s best to go by car — the road is easy and takes you through stunning scenery. Plan to spend around two hours at the monastery itself, plus extra time to explore the surrounding area. The complex is breathtaking — beautifully preserved and full of history. Don’t miss the small museum and the icon exhibition next to it. From the courtyard, the colorful buildings set against the mountain backdrop are truly spectacular. Behind the monastery, you’ll also find a restaurant and a few souvenir shops. It’s worth arriving early — I got there around 10 a.m., when it was still peaceful, but by 11:30 the tour buses start to arrive and it gets crowded.
Tibor — Google review
Really beautiful monastery. Wonderful endless murals right outside of the church. Free to enter (didn't try to visit the museum) You need to pay for the parking lot, 5 leva (~2.5 euro). The road to reach it was very nice, some parts alongside the river, made a great photo stop as well

Ledenika Cave

Nature & Parks
Caverns & Caves
Sheathed with winter ice, this cave opens in summer & is lauded for its stalactites & stalagmites.
Amazing! It does not take longer than 30 minutes to visit. The cave is smaller compared to others but it is definitely worth it to see. They are giving audio guides that explain and lead you through the cave. The formations are cool and they definitely bring a lot to the cave’s name.
Nicky — Google review
Beutiful formations! This cave is one of the best I have visited so far. I didn't expect how huge it is! It was like a hike. So much climbing, a bit of crawling. It wasn't hard, but so much fun! Just expect there are a lot of stairs!
Lyudmila M — Google review
Perfect for a hot summer day. 7 degrees Celsius inside. The guide was very nice.
Roxana I — Google review
We had such a great time here, highly recommend! It’s fun for both adults and kids. Just make sure to wear shoes with good grip, as it can get slippery. One thing to note: there’s no English tour guide, so if you don’t speak the local language, it helps to read up beforehand. Still, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience and hope you will too!
S J — Google review
Very interesting place for people who appreciate such things. Guide was very friendly but English is bit of a challenge. This is a must visit for people who love natural history and geology. It is also very interesting for people who enjoy dabbling in mythological history, as the caves offers a number of mythological tales and connections. The drive to the place is also very scenic. Not sure if public transport reaches the place. For some reason there are no immediately available toilets. The staff send you uphill towards the kiosks outside while kiosk operators send you to the building outside the Caves...
Kevin B — Google review
Nice place, some places could be not appropriate for big people
Alexei R — Google review
The cave itself was very interesting, however i do not think it is kept “untouched” and safe from visitors. Lots of people threw coins in places, which I do understand is part of the culture, but nonetheless- not the place to do it. Because of all of the lamps, now some plants and moss has started growing. Overall, my biggest issue was with the lack of consideration from the visitors with children - if your child shouts and runs in there and ruins the whole informational speech from the guide, maybe, it is not the best place for 2-7 year olds.
Natalia S — Google review
I recommend visiting in the winter as you can get very nice frozen structures, which can represent the much slower forming cave structures. Also, it's it's a much less busy season, and you can get a more personal tour with the extremely friendly staff. Even though it can't be proclaimed as an "untouched" cave, it has interesting history and lots to see. Be prepared for some tight passes and having to bend down occasionally.

The Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky is a renowned Bulgarian Orthodox church featuring stunning Neo-Byzantine architecture and an underground museum. Constructed between 1882 and 1912, it stands as one of the most significant landmarks in Sofia, honoring Russian soldiers who fought for Bulgaria's liberation from Turkish rule. This grand cathedral, named after a 13th-century Russian prince, is not only a place of worship but also a top photographic site in the city.
This place is stunning. The cathedral looks amazing, the entrance is free, but donations can be made, there are special boxes inside. Also, there is a small shop at the entrance, there you can buy souvenirs and candles. The place is not very crowded, we arrived in a Sunday evening and there were no issues. Definitely worth visiting when in Sofia.
Dany P — Google review
Sofia’s most iconic and grand cathedral, and its size combined with its stunning architecture gives it a truly commanding presence. Construction: Built between 1882 and 1912 to honor Russian soldiers who died during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), which liberated Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Architectural Style: Neo-Byzantine, with striking gold-plated domes and intricate frescoes inside. Capacity: Can accommodate up to 5,000 people, making it one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world. Features: Lavish interior with marble columns, mosaics, icons, and a massive iconostasis. Significance: Serves as the patriarchal cathedral of Bulgaria, a national symbol of faith, history, and Bulgarian liberation.
Ivy N — Google review
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is absolutely stunning and definitely a must see in Sofia. The architecture is breathtaking, from the golden domes to the beautifully detailed interior. What really impressed me is the feeling this place gives you. It truly evokes emotion, reflection and a quiet sense of presence. Inside, the frescoes are exceptional, full of depth and beauty, and they make the whole experience even more meaningful. Even if you have seen many cathedrals before, this one really stands out. Iconic, impressive and full of history, it adds something special to your time in Sofia.
Madalina P — Google review
The Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of those places that truly catches your eye the moment you see it. Its massive size, golden domes, and unique architecture make it stand out instantly in the city. You can’t help but stop and admire it from the outside. Once you step inside, the atmosphere completely changes. It’s quiet, spacious, and full of beautiful details. The murals, icons, and soft lighting create a calm and almost mystical feeling that makes you want to walk slowly and take everything in. One of the best things is that entrance is completely free, so visiting is very easy. The area around the cathedral is also lovely for a walk, taking photos, or just enjoying a bit of local life.
Victoria C — Google review
Such a wonderful cathedral and the largest in the Balkans. It's Neo-Byzantine style is glamorous and admirable. The artwork and chandeliers were such an eyesight. The cathedral is a symbol of Sofia and must visit. There was no wait time during the week and no tickets. A small donation to light up a candle is a nice idea. The crowd was very low.
Ash — Google review
I was lucky enough to walk in during service and it was magical. There was a beautiful choir singing and the sound was spectacular. I was in tears. The building and the energy almost commands you to be present. The visitors were very respectful. A must visit. I would assume Saturday afternoon is when they have a service.
Lefteris M — Google review
Free entry. You can either pray or visit or both. One of the most iconic landmarks in Sofia with pure golden roof finish donated by Russia long time ago. Inside, all those riches and hand painted pictures of all Bulgarian saints. Regardless of your faith, it must been seen while visited Sofia.
Krzysztof Z — Google review
A breathtaking masterpiece Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of those places that compels you to stop, look up, and remain silent. Its grandeur can be perceived from afar, but it is only when you get closer that you can truly appreciate every detail: golden domes shining in the sun, a majestic facade, and an almost magical feeling that accompanies every step. Upon entering, the atmosphere changes completely: soft lighting, the scent of incense, and wonderful icons that tell centuries of faith and history. Even those who are not religious cannot remain indifferent in the face of such beauty. Everything seems to speak of spirituality, art, and Bulgarian identity. I recommend visiting both during the day, to admire its architectural magnificence, and in the evening, when the lighting makes it even more evocative. A must-see for anyone passing through Sofia: it is not just a cathedral, it is an experience that remains in your heart.

Russian Orthodox church
Sights & Landmarks
Located in the heart of Sofia, the Church of St. Nicholas the Miraclemaker is a striking 1914 Russian Orthodox church with a vibrant tiled exterior and gilded onion domes. Designed by Russian architect Mikhail Preobrazhenski in the Russian Revival Style, it served as the official church of the nearby Russian Embassy and community in Sofia. The architecture is reminiscent of Muscovite Russian churches from the 17th century.
a spectacular church - I particularly love the gold trim. it makes it seem super ornate and beautiful. it’s very nice inside but you can’t take pictures so you’ll just have to take me at my word for it. you can also go downstairs into the crypt which is cool. also they have paintings of biblically accurate angels on the walls which is nice to see
Antonia P — Google review
If you are interested in a better angle for photos, head over to the back of the church by the park. It is less busy and more chances of you getting a solo shot. This is the more humble and smaller church in the old city of Sofia. The architecture itself is reflective of most Orthodox Christian churches with the orb cupolas which are glistening and gleaming of gold. Still a cool stop to make during your walks!
Nabil R — Google review
This little Russian Revival style church is so cute and worth the visit. The golden domes are so unique of Russian churches and very attractive from afar. No wait or tickets and very little crowd during the week. Definitely worth a visit to receive blessings of St.Nicholas the Wonder-Maker 🙏🏼
Ash — Google review
I was truly impressed seeing this church, even if only from the outside. It looks like it came straight out of a fairy tale! The Muscovite-style architecture is very rich, full of details and vibrant colors. What stands out the most, without a doubt, are its golden, onion-shaped domes, which shine brightly and stand out in the city center. It is a unique building, different from everything around it, and perfect for taking some memorable photos.
Luana B — Google review
Free entry. I was so impressed by this Russian Orthodox church, well maintained and looks just amazing inside. Plenty of people who only come to visit and plenty of people came to pray. Please respect both set of humans.

The official office of the Bulgarian President is housed in this building and therefore the building's honor guard and the guard exchange ceremony, which takes place every hour and can be viewed free of charge (except Saturdays and Sundays). At the entrance to the building are two armed soldiers, dressed in ceremonial uniforms from the 19th century, including a hat with a feather and rifles from this period. The ceremony lasts for five minutes! There are four soldiers who are replacing two who are standing outside, with whom they can also be photographed, if they arrive before the shift begins, and there are two more who are inside the president's house. It is recommended to arrive a few minutes before a round hour.

Ancient orthodox rotunda church "Saint George"

Mentioned on

Sights & Landmarks
Saint George Rotunda Church, located in Sofia, Bulgaria, is a significant historical site as it is the oldest surviving church in the city and one of the oldest in Europe. Dating back to the 4th century, during the Roman period when Christianity was recognized as an equal religion in the Empire, this cylindrical red brick church with a frescoed dome holds great architectural and cultural importance. It is situated near remnants that suggest there may have been another building at its location initially.
A beautiful church in the center of Sofia. This is the oldest building in the city, dating back to the 4th century. It is built with red bricks from the outside. Although it is very old, the church is well preserved. It's nicely decorated inside, but it's a bit cramped and can't hold more people at once. There is no entrance fee. Inside you can buy cheap souvenirs.
Spase M — Google review
Really interesting the way it is situated in the court yard of the government buildings. Very rich and elegant inside in spite of what it looks like outside. I would say, go if you have time, if not, you can place it lower on the priority list. So many amazing museums and art galleries to visit so plan your time well!

The Church of St. George is a truly remarkable place, the oldest preserved monument in Sofia. It is a small red-brick, circular church dating back to Roman times, set among modern buildings, which makes it even more fascinating. Inside, you can admire beautiful Byzantine frescoes from different periods, ranging from the 4th to the 14th century, well preserved and rich in detail. The atmosphere is intimate and spiritual, giving you the feeling of stepping back in time. It is easy to visit, with free entrance, and is located right in the city center, just a short walk from St. Nedelya Cathedral. An unmissable stop for anyone visiting Sofia, both for its historical significance and its unique beauty.

The oldest building in Sofia, and a miracle that it survived wartime bombing and communist indifference. Layers of history, beautiful ancient frescos and an unusual and interesting location. Free to enter, like most churches in Bulgaria. You're not supposed to take photos inside ;)

Lasting for over 1700 years, this church surrounded by ruins, is such a remarkable place to stop by. It's considered the oldest building in Sofia ! Definitely worth the visit and receiving blessings of St.George 🙏🏼

The Rotunda of St. George is one of the oldest buildings in the city, dating back to the 4th century. Its red-brick construction, circular plan on a square base and roughly 13-metre dome create a compact volume rich in history. I really enjoyed how this small building stands out within the urban context, lending the visit a sense of depth.

Sights & Landmarks
Nestled on the outskirts of Sofia, Boyana Church is a captivating medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church that has earned its place as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This charming structure boasts stunning frescoes from the 11th to 13th centuries, showcasing some of the finest examples of Bulgarian medieval artistry. Visitors can also explore nearby attractions like Boyana Lake and the Dendarium, which offers picturesque walking paths and family-friendly facilities.
This historic monument has been well preserved and maintained. It feels calm due to the park and the trees around. You need to buy a ticket to enter inside and view the frescoes. Although they are from 1255, it's really well preserved. Once you enter inside the small church with a ticket, you have 10 minutes to admire the artwork. The basic amenities are well maintained. The only annoying thing was that there was no way to regulate the entry and one had to stand in the queue. There are quite a lot of buses that ply to the church everyday and are well connected with public transport.
Arun K — Google review
There’s not much to see at all… until you enter inside the church (for a fee)! To be honest, I don’t think I would have been able to appreciate as much the inside as well, if we didn’t have an actual tour guide to explain things. Do note that the interior of the church is small. And entry inside is timed by the caretaker to 8~10minutes per group. The main attractions were seeing the three parts of the church and the many beautiful frescoes inside which told so many different stories - interestingly, both Biblical and of the local history of the region. The small church itself is located in the compound of a botanical garden, but the garden itself didn’t seem to have anything unique about it. Boyana Church is one of Bulgaria’s 10 UNESCO Wolrd Heritage Sites.

WOW. Absolutely stunning! Talk to the kind, gentle and knowledgeable guide inside and he will explain the frescos, the history, the significance. You're supposed to only get 10 minutes, but as there was no one waiting to come in we chatted for about half an hour. An absolute gem of a place and we'll worth a short ride out of the city. The area is lovely to walk and perhaps head up the mountain too.

A must-see in Sofia! Boyana Church is absolutely stunning — the frescoes are breathtaking and incredibly well-preserved. It’s amazing to see such important medieval art up close. The setting is peaceful, surrounded by trees, and the staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. A true UNESCO gem and a highlight of my visit to Sofia!

Peaceful and beautiful monastery This monastery is truly a hidden gem – peaceful, green, and with a calming, almost spiritual atmosphere. The architecture is stunning, and the whole area feels very well preserved and serene. Just behind the monastery, there’s also a trail that leads into the forest – a perfect spot for a quiet walk in nature. Highly recommended for anyone looking to relax, reflect, and enjoy some beautiful scenery.
Eyal L — Google review
The frescos are amazingly well preserved, and some brief context is given at the start of the 10 minute viewing window. Kind of a trek out ~50 min from the historic old town/Serdika area but easy to get to with public transit. Worth going to especially if paired with the national history museum that’s a 20 min bus away. There is some uphill walking. I recommend in the morning as only ten people are in at a time, so when you arrive and buy a ticket, you then wait for however many sets of 10 mins until everyone in front of you has gone in. They make sure you have a ticket but not what time, so make sure to stand in line at the church or else others can pass you
Kat N — Google review
Even if you have only 10min inside it’s worth it! You need to experience the frescoes in person, they’re simply breathtaking.
Radoslav P — Google review
This is a short visit but an opportunity to see remaining frescoes in the church. You can see 3 transitions of the building from outside, and the grave of a notable leader.

Belogradchik Fortress is a historic site with unique conglomerate rock formations that were once used as fortresses. Constructed by the Romans between the first and third centuries CE, the fortress features openings for guns and three bastions for cannons on its walls. Visitors can climb to the highest point of the fortress, known as the first slab, to enjoy stunning views of the 230 ft. high rocks in the surrounding area.
For Bulgaria road-trip, I voted here to be the best place I have visited. This place is the combination of nature and human creativity. It gives you serene and fabulous feelings. One day, one night is a must to be here at least. I found not so many people here that is lovely when compared as any famous and popular places.

Amazing place, the favourite place of Mr.Musk. You need to see with your eyes, so can feel the real deal. If you want to fly with the balloon, you need to be on site 6:15AM, park in front of the police station and follow the lights :)

Here’s a more vivid review in English: An absolutely cosmic place — the mountains look as if they belong to another planet. The landscape is breathtaking, surreal, and unforgettable. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Alex L — Google review
There is a parking lot right next to the entrance pf the fortress. Paid parking 2,5 euro for the hall stay. The entrance price of the fortress - 7,5 euro 🙄 But the place was okay. If you want to go to the top - there are stairs and right at the top are a lot of big rocks - so prepare the right shoes. You can enter with the dog. The souvenirs are sold right behind the cashier- big stone building.
Iliyana S — Google review
The Belogradchik Rocks in Bulgaria are a breathtaking natural wonder, with towering red sandstone formations carved over 230 million years in the Balkan Mountains. Reaching up to 200m, they create a dramatic, otherworldly landscape perfect for photography. The nearby Belogradchik Fortress, built into the rocks, adds historical depth. The trail has steep, uneven steps, so walk carefully. Bring water and snacks, as there are no facilities. Visit in daylight for vibrant colors or at sunset for a glowing sky—both are unforgettable! A must-see for adventurers and nature lovers!
Hristiyan V — Google review
Absolutely fantastic! We spent almost 2 hours exploring the fortress. There are many stairs, stone and man made, some quite steep... the views are incredible.
Scot L — Google review
Definitely worth a visit. This is one of the most beautiful places in Bulgaria, and maybe in the world. Tip: climb the steps to the top to enjoy the view, but keep in mind that for an elderly person it may be a challenge.
Dimcho N — Google review
Very interesting rocks formation within inserted perfectly the Roman empyre architecture for a fortress. Unfortunately is not well maintained from the staff, not too expensive 7,5€ but it's in a very remote region from Sofia. Better to spend one night in the area to visit also the Danube border region. They use it for events so the installation are unfortunately someway invasive.

Felix Romuliana

Historical landmark

Ancient Ruins
Historic Sites
In Serbia, near the Bulgarian border there is this little piece of the mighty Roman Empire, back from III-IV century. The status of the ruins is awesome and you can actually see and touch the incredible details of the complex and decorations. The bricks were great conditions, amazing considering how many years have passed. The museum was closed when we visited, but nevertheless the Felix Romuliana was still worth it! I really recommend it, not only because is part of the UNESCO, but because it is hard to see such sites even in Italy. Guides are available in many languages to learn more about the site.
TheVirtvs — Google review
Very interesting historical site, well preserved and reconditioned. Close to the main road, worth a visit if you are passing nearby.

Felix Romuliana is a breathtaking 4th-century palace of Emperor Galerius — a must-visit! Located in Serbia, a land that produced 17 Roman emperors, this site brilliantly showcases imperial power and heritage.
John S — Google review
Felix Romuliana, or Gamzigrad, is a complex of palaces and temples built by Emperor Galerius in memory of his mother Romula. The complex, currently in ruins, is a UNESCO heritage site. The surrounding wall with towers is especially well preserved. Most beutiful mosaics from the site were moved to the local museum, unfortunately closed at the time of my visit. Staff members gave a short lecture as an introduction to the site, which was quite informative. Although this place is not as impressive as similar sites in Italy or other Mediterranean countries, a visit here is highly recommended for history buffs.

Interesting place in the middle of nothing. Entrance fee is cca 4euro per person. If you love history, you might like this place.

This is a neat site to see. The tickets are cheap, so it's worth it if you're driving through. The translations on signage are hilariously inaccurate.
Zoe Z — Google review
A fortress so simple, yet complex, filled with culture, history and a relaxing walk through time. While there's not much to interact with, the vast area of ruins scattered across the field is quite unique. Remote location but worth the effort to spend a few hours just taking your time to learn about this place.
Travel ( — Google review
Fantastic archeological site, with preserved ruins of what was once at the end of 2nd century AD residence of Emperor Galerius. Impressive fortifications, towers still in place and a wast complex of interior buildings create of this site a unique occasion to understand the power, architectural ingenuity and lawishness of roman empire in its decline. Original mosaics can be seen in Museum of Zaječar just 10km away while the rest are for conservation purposes covered with send, thus invisible to public. There is one part of original artefacts including several mosaics on display in the left hand gate tower. There are guided tours in English as well, and the young and dynamic team of art historians and archaeologist are there to help you around. Absolutely a place to visit and enjoy the beauty of the nature and th magnificent mountain Rtanj on the way there. It will take you approximately 45mib of slow ride from highway exit at Paraćin to reach it. An ideal stop!

Ancient Ruins
Skull Tower, also known as Cele Kula, is a haunting stone structure in Nis, Serbia. Built in 1809 by the Ottomans, it is embedded with real human skulls. This iconic and chilling monument stands as a reminder of the first Serbian uprising against Ottoman rule. During this historic event, Serbian rebels were vastly outnumbered by the Turkish army at Cegar Hill near Nis.
Visiting the Skull Tower (Ćele Kula) in Niš was an unforgettable experience. It's both chilling and deeply moving—a powerful reminder of Serbia’s turbulent past and the sacrifices made during the fight for freedom. The structure, built from the skulls of Serbian rebels, is incredibly well preserved and respectfully presented. The museum provides detailed historical context in multiple languages, and the staff were knowledgeable and kind. It’s not a long visit—maybe 30–45 minutes—but the impact lasts much longer. This is a must-see for anyone interested in Balkan history, and a truly unique site you won't find anywhere else in the world. Highly recommended if you’re in Niš or passing through southern Serbia. Just be prepared—it's emotional, but incredibly important.
Michael K — Google review
A tower constructed from 952 skulls of 19th-century Serbian rebels. The tower was built to serve as a lesson to Serbs who wanted to break away from the Ottoman Empire and was later converted into a monument. Until 1878, the tower remained open and unprotected, leaving only 58 skulls remaining today due to weather conditions and the fact that the skulls were taken away by rebel relatives for burial. In 1892, with donations from across Serbia, a church was built by Belgrade architect Dimitrije T. Leko, encompassing and enclosing the tower on all sides.
Hetz N — Google review
A unique and moving historical site in Niš. Skull Tower is a powerful reminder of the past, well preserved inside a chapel. Entrance is 300 RSD = 2.5€, and the visit takes about 20–30 minutes. Highly recommended for history lovers
Aleksandra M — Google review
Most unique monument in the world. Built by the Ottomans in 1809 as a warning to the Balkan people to not try to do battle with them. Made of the skills of proud Serbian warriors that sacrificed themselves instead of being captured.
Brett M — Google review
Tickets can be bought in the building next to it, but there was no one to check. Around 300 dinars from what I remember. Would be nice if there were more details to the story presented, but I understand why they would want to keep it as it is. All in all, weird feeling that you get there, keeps reminding us of what humans are capable of just for power.
Dora B — Google review
Sad story of the Serbs and what happened when they finally had a TINY bit of success against the Ottomans. To imagine that this tower still stands where it was originally built in 1809 was amazing.
Marjorie G — Google review
It's worth a vist and the entrance fee is not too high. It's probably about a 10 minute vist to see the 4 sides of the tower and read the 4 information boards.

A great place to visit in the city. There are many old things and buildings in the fortress that you should see. At the entrance there is a public toilet that is free, and in front of it a souvenir shop. There are two small trains here for the youngest who want to enjoy a walk through the park in a different way. A large part of the fortress is under deep shadows. The whole place is with lush vegetation and lots of greenery. Here you will see the remains of an old church, a mosque, a lapidarium, visit museums and many other things. In August, one of the most famous music festivals in the region, Nisville, takes place. It is worth visiting.
Spase M — Google review
Good park, with some attractions around. Has a place for coffee, several souvenir shops, and an open stage with events (might be available online, but I'm not sure). There was no entry fee nor ticket required, but it could be only for this visit. It has a miniature locomotive which provides a sightseeing tour, not sure if it is guided. We parked at a public payed parking, but at the end of the work time for Saturday, but we found it a bit difficult for people who do not have a local Sim card. There is an app, but requires an account which we did not bother to make. Nearly there is a bazaar which has WONDERFUL produce at EXTREMELY affordable prices. Those aromas and tastes took me back to my childhood at my grandma's house - just wonderful, highly recommend!!!

Devil's Town not only takes your breath away with its beauty but also provides an unforgettable experience, a blend of natural enchantment and unique geological splendor."

It takes around 2h to come from Niš, but absolutely worth the trip. Small parking for maybe maximum of 50 cars, and entrance fee of only 350 Serbian dinars. You 'll get a small paper with mostly local advertising, I advise you to jump to internet and read the legends about the place, where you'll get much more information. From parking lot to formation, road goes through the woods and very steap stairs , but it's not that long , about 15 minutes walking and climbing. On the top, a stunning view of the rock formation and surrounding. A place definitely looks great during sunny days. I've seen strong lights installed and I wonder if it is possible to visit this place in the evening. Must be amazing. This juwel of nature is definitely worth visiting. Be aware of narrow roads and deep holes which might damage your car. If possible take a local guide to tell you the story about Saxon mines and local legends instead of searching through internet.

Golubac Fortress is a 14th-century compound nestled into a cliff along the Danube River, offering public tours. The fortress is well-preserved and provides a glimpse into its rich history and stunning views. Visitors can engage in activities like archery and should be prepared to climb stairs by wearing comfortable clothing and sports shoes. It features ten towers, a palace, and ancient artifacts on display.
One of the best places to visit in Serbia. Sadly we went almost at closing time and only had an hour to explore, but we did make the most of it. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Prices were adequate for such a well kept monument. We were very impressed with the level of the exhibitions and we will definitely be back with more time to explore the higher towers (we only managed to visit three). Make sure you bring long pants and comfortable sport shoes.
Domingo B — Google review
A truly impressive fortress and one of the highlights of our trip to Serbia! The place is full of history, with towers offering breathtaking views over the Danube River. What amazed us most was how well organized everything is – the staff are professional, friendly, and extremely helpful. There are different circuits you can choose from depending on the level of adventure you want, and we really appreciated the safety measures: the most dangerous route is only allowed if you are properly dressed and equipped. It shows how seriously they care about visitors’ safety while still offering an authentic experience. Serbians really know how to make the most out of everything, and this fortress is a perfect example. A must-visit

It was a very windy and overcast day but it was still worth visiting this incredible place. Beautifuly restored. Our guide gave a great history of the place. Many of the towers were closed due to the high winds.

It could have been the grandest & strongest fortress in Serbia? Definitely a must visit. Here I just want to make a remark that in case you come with a guided day tour, make sure that you get a ticket that Covers all zones, if you want to climb to the top, & make sure that enough time is given. I was so disappointed that I was given the lowest level ticket, not given enough explanations, nor time nor options to climb the entire fortress.
Connie W — Google review
We had a pleasant visit here. Very nice renovation, beautiful garden and landscape. Depending on the route you want to visit, adequate equipment is required. Kids under 12 years old can only visit green route, difficulty increases for each color after green. For green it can take up to 2 hours for the visit, taking other routes can probably take 3 to 5 hours. Recommend a visit here, also nearby town is very nice.
Andrei M — Google review
The well-renovated fortress with a spectacular view, but to be able to climb to the top of the towers you need hiking shoes. It's very beautiful up there, but make sure you don't get sick of heights because there are also steep areas.
Monica A — Google review
Amazing experience! Great construction! On the entrance they explain everything. The most important thing is to wear sneakers and shorts only like that you can go in higher blue zone.
Ivana L — Google review
Excellent experience, all recommendations. The only issue is that you can't visit the entire fortress on the same day, because of the schedule of the tours that you should check before coming. It is shame, if someone is fit, visiting all three routes in one day is not a problem. I would recommend coming early in the day, because of the limited parking spaces.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Manasija Monastery, located in the Resava river gorge about 135km southeast of Belgrade, is a walled Serbian Orthodox complex dating back to 1418. The monastery served as a fortified refuge for artists and writers fleeing the Turkish invasion and features mammoth walls with 11 towers. Despite surviving various foreign rulers and battles over its more than 600-year history, it retains some original frescoes and a mosaic floor.
The best time to visit is on a weekday and in mild weather, so you can fully experience the peaceful energy of this ancient fortress without crowds. ✅ Why is it special? – The atmosphere is incredibly welcoming—you can even bring your dog! 🐕 (A rare exception for monasteries.) – The church is home to breathtaking frescoes, and the whole place feels deeply spiritual and serene. – The monastery shop offers unique souvenirs—I highly recommend the raspberry syrup and natural cosmetics. 🍇🛍️ 🌿 What’s nearby? After visiting, you can explore more hidden gems: 📍 Resava Cave (30-minute drive) 💦 Veliki Buk Waterfall 🌲 Eco-trail (starting from Izvor Lisine restaurant) 🚗 There’s a large parking area by the river—perfect for a picnic. And if you’re lucky, you might spot a herd of sheep grazing nearby! 🐑

A popular place for a walk with your family, friends or pets if you're in Kragujevac. I wonted to visit Smederevo Fortress since my childhood, and I did it. Magnificent build from medieval era. Worth every effort. Structure is very robust but that how it was built. Local People should do more on marketing, more on cleaning outside the building, remove run down ruins what ever it is, just bulldozer it. I know that the republic of Serbia is a poor but hang on, the structure is of very significant value for us Serbs and Europe too. A great place. The keep is quite large but easily seen in about 30 mins to 1 hour. It's fun to climb onto the walls and walk through the towers. There's not much in the way of a museum anywhere so maybe do some research about the site before you get there.

The Smederevo Fortress is a truly impressive historical site and one of the greatest symbols of Serbia’s medieval heritage. Inside, there is a beautiful, well-kept park — peaceful, green, and perfect for walking while imagining what life once looked like behind these mighty walls. The view of the Danube is spectacular, especially in the evening when the sunlight reflects off the river and creates an unforgettable atmosphere. However, the fortress walls could be better maintained, as some parts look unstable and deserve more care and restoration. Despite that, the place radiates history, strength, and beauty. It’s a must-visit for anyone who loves culture, architecture, and places that tell stories of the past.
Немања П — Google review
Smederevo Fortress is impressive. I'm not sure why but I was surprised at it's size and scale. Entry to the surrounding park is free and inside the actual fortress is a mere 250rsd. If you like history, especially Serbian history, visiting Smederevo is a must.
Brenda B — Google review
Very nice views. Paid 250 RSD entry ticket. They don't have good information about how to pay parking if you can't pay via SMS (if u don't have a Serbian phone subscription u can't pay via SMS). Also the guy selling the tickets wasn't much help cause he didn't speak English..

The Smederevo Fortress is one of the largest medieval fortresses in the Balkans, located in the city of Smederevo, on the banks of the Danube River. It was built between 1428 and 1430 by Despot Đurađ Branković and his wife Jerina.
Masa — Google review
It's a beautifully preserved castle where people can spend quality time, exercise, and enjoy the beautiful weather. A 250 RSD ticket is required to enter the inner section, but the outer part is, of course, free. It's a great place to enjoy with the family. And the river view is also worth to see.

250 dinars to visit a ruin which is now home to pigeons. There are no (or little) information about the fortress.

Church of Saint Sava

Orthodox church
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the vibrant Vracar district of Belgrade, the Temple of Saint Sava stands as a monumental testament to Byzantine-inspired architecture. This 20th-century marvel is not only one of the largest Orthodox churches globally but also features an awe-inspiring central dome that dominates the skyline, making it a must-see for any traveler. Its grandeur and intricate design draw visitors from all corners, eager to experience its spiritual ambiance and historical significance.
It is one of the top attractions in the capital. It is massive and very peaceful. A very classic Cathedral of Orthodox religion. The top floor visually is breathtaking. The bottom floor is more like visual images on the walls. Make sure that you visit. Totally recommended.
Mustafa A — Google review
A mustsee when visiting Belgrade! This is truly one of the prettiest churches I’ve ever seen and that’s coming from someone who’s only seen churches in America and Mexico. Everywhere I turned, there was another piece of art to admire; it was deeply moving, especially with the soft singing in the background. Downstairs, there’s also a newer art exhibition that beautifully complements the main space. I loved seeing the attention to detail and the richness of the religious artwork throughout. Absolutely a spot you shouldn’t miss.
Emily B — Google review
Beautiful church inside and outside with many icons and an epicenter of Orthodox Christianity. If you are not knowledgeable of Serbia or Orthodox Christianity, would recommend a tour guide, especially if you are from a different culture. I visited many churches alone, but some tourists don't understand the history and a guide would be a good idea.
Spencer B — Google review
One of Belgrade’s most iconic landmarks, and in my opinion it deserves even more international recognition. The Temple of Saint Sava is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, built on the site where Saint Sava’s relics were burned by the Ottomans in 1595. The idea to construct a grand church in his honor dates back to the 19th century, but the actual building process only began in 1935 and continued, through wars, occupations, and political changes, until the 21st century. The exterior is monumental, while the interior is truly breathtaking: golden mosaics, marble details, and a serene underground crypt that is worth visiting on its own. Easily accessible, beautifully illuminated at night, and one of the absolute must-see places in Belgrade.
Patrizia P — Google review
The most beautiful, The Church of Saint Sava is a Serbian Orthodox church in the Vračar plateau in Belgrade, Serbia. It is the largest Orthodox church in Serbia, one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches and it ranks among the largest churches in the world. You woll be lost in its beauty once you are inside. A must to visit place in Belgrade
* B — Google review
I went here on the 31/8/2025 at 8:00 am sharp since I wanted to see the church without the crowds and I must say this place really disappointed me. The square in front of it it’s completely destroyed and the floor is shattered. It’s full of weeds, trash, faeces, urine and used syringes and it looked like it was never cared for or cleaned. In front to the entrance if the church there were many homeless people. Many young and many well past they nineties. It was so sad seeing those people coming to h crying and begging for food. It shattered my heart and left me with a heavy heart for my whole stay in Belgrade. The church is beautiful inside but it’s unfortunately not looked after properly. It was very crowded and there were pieces of trash and debris everywhere. It looked like it lacked maintenance and the staff wouldn’t stop staring at me and talking with themself while they were pointing at me and making obvious rude comments. It made me feel uncomfortable and unsafe. If you are in Belgrade I suggest you coming here but beware it won’t be as you may expect it unfortunately. Such a shame

Saint Sava Cathedral in Belgrade is majestic. Its imposing structure dominates the skyline, while the golden interior is impressive. The beautifully landscaped garden at the front adds a serene charm, making the entire site a great destination

The Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade is a tribute to the life and work of the renowned electrical engineer, Nikola Tesla. Housed in a charming residential villa, it showcases his personal effects, instruments, and original drawings that revolutionized energy production and distribution. The museum offers both memorial exhibits and interactive displays featuring 3D computer-generated models of Tesla's inventions.
Since im a science subject fan,i was excited to visit this museum. We had a reservation so it was a skip the line entry. Entrance fee was 100 serbian dinar for a group of more than 10.Its interesting to see Nilola Tesla's ideas put into a beautiful work.
R.A G — Google review
The plus side - it’s set up very well to learn more about the history, life and work of Tesla, and there are some great opportunities to see working models of some of his inventions, along with personal artifacts. The down side is that the museum is fairly small, and with large groups, it can be pretty crowded. There is also no way to secure tickets ahead of time, unless you’re with a larger group, and you can only pay in cash.
Lindsay B — Google review
Big disappointment. 1) at least the price is ok , 800 dinars , it’s NOT possible to book online or NOT able to pay with CARD , so you have to wait outside in the rain until they will let you know if you can enter or not since the tour can only accommodate maximum 60 people. I’m not sure why they don’t count 60 people that enter at the gate and then tell the other ones to come back in one hour instead of letting us wait in the rain for an hour. 2) this is actually a very small exhibition, I think the exhibition area is the size of an apartment. It feels more like a high school class lab room than an actual museum. The guide told us that the city is building a bigger and better museum because is very small. ( I think the size has been okay until Elon Musk became famous with the Tesla cars so people started knowing about Nicola Tesla, this is probably the reason why 99% of the people knows about Nicola Tesla) 3) 60 people get crammed on plastic foldable chair chairs in a small room. You feel like a sardine and then they show you a 15 minute video made 10 years ago about the life of Nicola Tesla. 4) then you have 15 minutes where the guide turns on 3 or 4 instruments that Tesla invented. Nothing special if you go to any serious science museum you we’ll see a better and bigger version of this instruments. Not mentioning that you are climbed into a very small room that you can’t even move. 5) then you have another 10 minutes to see a few objects that belonged to Nicola Tesla and then after 45 minutes .
Scotch&Soda — Google review
The museum itself is tiny, they only accept local currency in cash. No forex or card accepted. There is no online ticket to purchase, you need to keep standing in queue for hours for hourly slot. Try to avoid last hours as if its full, regardless of time you been standing they wont allow you to come as they can accept people more then its capacity. Once you are inside, the tour is good, they guide you everywhere
* B — Google review
The museum takes 45 minutes to go around. But that's mainly because you have to wait 5-10 minutes to go through ticketing (and they only accept cash rather than card), and then you have to wait for everyone to get seated. They pack a lot of people into this space so it takes a long time to be ready. The video goes for 15 minutes and probably could be updated and sped up. But realistically you should be abke visit the museum and just skip the video if you want to. They do some good experiment demonstrations, but again, could probably run them twice an hour get more people through the facility - there winds up being so many people in the group that not everyone gets a decent view. overall it's not bad and gives an inside into the man and some of his activities but it's a very small museum.
Brent J — Google review
Just don’t bother to get there . We were waiting for 3 hours as only 60 people can enter each time . You pay only cash and watching for half an hour something that you could easily find on YouTube , then the tour guide shares live some experiments (for kids) and then on the same floor you can check a few personal things of Tesla and his ashes 😏 Just don’t waste your time and money . Belgrade is beautiful choose something else .
Barbara Z — Google review
Interesting experience very educating. The visits can only be done in guided groups but even on a busy day the wait was not too long. The experiments were fun. A lot of personal items of Tesla are on display. I do not recommend this museum for very young children since there’s a 15 min film and a small 20-30 min tour. They might get bored and interrupt the experience for others.
Zoe S — Google review
Not worth the visit. A lot of waiting for a video made in 2015. Explanation not in good English easy to understand. 60 people in each tour you cannot see things well. Not enough seats. I’ve learned more from him in science museums. You cannot pay by card!!! You have to pay cash and local currency!!! You cannot book and then a disappointment.

I went here on the 31/8/2025 and the street from what I’ve heard it’s supposed to be the best and most charming street in the country. The standards here must be very low because when I was here it was completely dead until 3:00 pm. Not a single soul on sight until late in the afternoon. The street was also extremely filthy with trash, vomit, feaces, urine and used syringes everywhere on the ground. It looked like it was never cleaned or in general taken care of in its life. When it got a bit lively it felt unsafe because it was full of pickpockets. It was extremely sad to see many people begging in the street. Some very young. Nestled atop a dramatic ridge, the Belgrade Fortress, also known as Kalemegdan Park, is an essential starting point for any exploration of this vibrant city. This historic site not only boasts stunning views over the confluence of two rivers but also serves as a sprawling park filled with lush greenery. The fortress itself is divided into Upper and Lower City sections, each brimming with attractions like the iconic Victor Monument, Military Museum, Nebojsa Tower, and Saint Petka's Church.
Excellent spot to explore, discover and stroll. Get those steps in because you could easily do 10,000 just exploring the citadel alone. Add in other amusements like the museums, medieval sports and restaurants and you could make a fun day of it
Chris B — Google review
Must vist place in belgrade serbia. The Fortress is a must visit when in the city. Originally built by the Romans in the 1st century AD, the fortress has seen countless empires rise and fall including Byzantine, Hungarian, Ottoman, and Austrian, each leaving its own mark. The Ottomans, who ruled Belgrade for nearly two centuries, rebuilt and expanded large parts of the fortress. You can still see traces of their presence in the design of the gates, the remains of the mosque near the Upper Town, and the general layout that reflects their military architecture. The surrounding Kalemegdan Park adds charm to the visit, offering shaded paths, sculptures, and views across the rivers. Key highlights within the fortress include the Victor Monument, and the Military Museum, which houses weapons from various periods of Serbian and Balkan. Great history, great view, great vepons

We went here on a walking tour of Belgrade. It is well laid out and provides a great setting to learn about the history of the area, city, and country. There are plaques throughout with some information but so much can be understood just by looking a the location to understand why it was a critical place for a fortification.
Thomas W — Google review
Cool views of the city, some armored vehicles on display at the gates, nothing too special. I liked reading the informative labels throughout the fortress, they were detailed. You can climb on some of the walls, other than that there are some basketball/tennis courts right outside that don’t really match the vibe.

I would not recommend visiting it under no circumstances. So sad

The food in the restaurant is delicious, home-made, fresh, traditional and modern mix. The service is fast and friendly. Even though it's extremely popular it's not too expensive: you get good value for the money. It's just overwhelmed with museum content. They need much larger area to spread the exponats around.

Absolutely magical experience! From the moment we arrived, Etno Selo Stanišići felt like a warm embrace—authentic, beautifully maintained, and run by people who genuinely care. The atmosphere blends tradition and comfort in the best possible way: cozy rooms, spotless grounds, and food that tastes like home. But what truly won us over was how family-friendly everything is. Our kids could relax and explore while we enjoyed a calm, unhurried pace—exactly what a family getaway should be. I especially want to praise their commitment to the regional “Friends of Family” project (Prijatelji porodice). Etno Selo Stanišići isn’t just a venue that welcomes families—it actively supports and promotes family values through this initiative. You can feel that support in the way staff greet you, the thoughtful touches for parents and children, and the genuine respect for large families. As someone involved with and passionate about “Friends of Family,” it means a lot to see a partner that doesn’t treat it as a slogan, but as a living practice. If you’re looking for a place where tradition meets heartfelt hospitality—and where families are truly celebrated—this is it. Top recommendation!

Awesome place to spend the summer in Tuzla. There’re 3 artificial lakes filled with salty water. Two of them have got slides for people (specially kids and teens) to have some good fun. Kiosks serving drinks and burgers are around, as well as proper restaurant serving a decent menu at reasonable prices. You can also rent an umbrella and a lazy chair for more comfort, and for only 10KM or EUR5 for the entire day. Definitely - considering there’s no beach in Tuzla unless you drive 4-6 hours to Neom - it’s THE PLACE to go! :)

Siklós Castle, located in Southern Hungary near the Croatian border, is a well-preserved 1200s castle that showcases various architectural styles such as Romanian, Gothic, and Renaissance. Once serving as the seat of an important ruler and later owned by Count Moric Benyovszky, the castle now offers visitors a glimpse into its history through furniture and weaponry exhibits, a wine museum, dungeon, and torture chamber.
The Siklós Castle is a program for minimum a half day. With the city a whole day. This well preserved castle has several exhibitions, a nice café and a perfect wine shop. (It was the best for me. 😀) A beautiful panorama, good exhibitions, a room with an endless repeating video and finally a great walk around the castle. Historically you do not find a lot of such preserved castles in Hungary. Therefore it is a good destination to visit. By car, you need to pay a parking fee, I found it high compared to Hungarian conditions. Siklós itself is a nice city, also worth it for a walk.

The castle looks great but to pay 3000huf to walk around inside it's a no, no. Ridiculous price and will not pay that to just walk around in a building sorry. In the same town the thermal bath cost the same amount for a whole day. Do better

Nice castle with a good piece of Hungarian medival history. The castle is well preserved and maintained. The exhibit in the different rooms is good and very informative, in some rooms you can even try on historical soldiers armor and uniforms (excellent for children). The paintings and wine exhibits are interesting and keep the castle "alive" with people. Recommend a visit.

Christ the Savior - Serbian Orthodox Cathedral

Sights & Landmarks
Christ the Savior Orthodox Cathedral, located in the heart of Banja Luka, is a stunning Serbian Orthodox temple with a compelling history. Constructed in the 1920s using beautiful red and yellow-tinged travertine from Mesopotamia, it suffered damage during World War II but rose from the ashes to become an eternal symbol. The cathedral's Byzantine-style architecture features layered gold-brown and crab-pink stones leading up to golden domes and a towering bell tower.
Absolutely spectacular - the ceiling a work of art to rival any church in the world and the decorations have been restored to perfection. I did not take photos nor videos, as a service was about to start but entry is free and it is worth a small donation if you go in.

Very pretty inside and out but it’s a new cathedral. Maybe in another 300 years it will be a very valued monument

For me as for a tourist, this is a chilling spot. The building itself is interesting for me, as we don't have churches like this one in the country that I come from. So it's worth of a picture or two. It seems that since the church is an active worship place, it's not regularly open for tourists, which I completely understand. But because of that, the church was closed every time I passed by and I didn't even peak in. There is a park close by where a lot of people sit, relax and hangout with others.

From ashes to eternal look. _____________________________ Banja Luka's Byzantine-style Orthodox Cathedral is an impressive structure of layered gold-brown and crab-pink stones rising to golden domes and flanked by an unfeasibly tall free-standing bell tower. The interior has a splendid carved iconostasis and giant central chandelier through which a dazzling mosaic of Christ stares down from within the main dome. The structure was built from 2000, a faithful reconstruction that started nearly 60 years after the previous incarnation was bombed by #Nazi Germany, then demolished by their Ustashi stooges.
