The Frederiksborg Castle Chapel, located in Hillerod just north of Copenhagen, is a must-visit destination. Accessible by a 40-minute train ride from Central Station Hovedbanegarden, the chapel offers an unforgettable experience with its stunning palace and gardens. Visitors can explore numerous exhibits and enjoy the opportunity to try on period costumes in the great hall.
It's a beautiful building. Easy to miss as part of the palace tour. Architecture is stunning. The ceilings you can sit and watch for hours. If you go take a good luck at the shields round the walls.
Matt D — Google review
So unexpected to find a Chapel inside this castle. Exquisitely beautiful!
Frankie P — Google review
Use the elevator if you have arthritis, otherwise there are only spiral staircases between the 5 floors of exhibits
G H — Google review
A beautiful castle built in the early 17th century. The alterpiece made of ivory and gold looks majestic. From the pre-historic to modern times, there's a lot to see. The gardens are a treat for the eyes and the castle is worth it.
Rajashree M — Google review
The building is being repaired as I went there, the inside is cleaned and well-maintained. The artworks of the royals and the shields are a bit special though, I also enjoyed the nouveau history bit that was shown on the third floor. The price was good for such a big exhibition. Now as for why I'm only rating it 3 stars, I personally don't think it's worth going out of your way to buy a ticket outside of Copenhagen to go here, because the inside of the castle looks a lot like that of any other's in Europe that I've been in so it's not very memorable and the vicinity is pretty bland in comparison with the inner part of the city.. don't misunderstand though, I'm not warning anyone against visiting this. If you're using public transport I'd recommend buying single tickets and not the big city pass, outside the main city the town isn't very touristy.
Ruu S — Google review
Great chapel to visit if you are a tourist. Nicely maintained and awesome to see the organ and how it looks from the inside during the maintenance.

Amazing Denmark: A Journey Through History at Frederiksborg Castle Visiting Frederiksborg Castle was an immersive journey into the grandeur of Danish history. The castle's chapel, with its ornate interior and serene ambiance, evokes a sense of reverence for the architectural mastery of a bygone era. Each room in the castle tells a story, adorned with intricate ceilings and walls that bear the brushstrokes of artists who have captured the essence of Denmark's regal past. The gardens are a testament to landscape artistry, offering a tranquil retreat with meticulously trimmed trees lining the pathways, leading visitors through a verdant tableau of nature's splendor. Frederiksborg is not merely a castle; it is a narrative etched in stone, paint, and flora that continues to enchant visitors with its historical splendor and artistic heritage.
Ricardo L — Google review
It is definitely a castle that must be visited. But you should spend a day to visit it. İt is very big and detailed rooms inside. The best thing: it is also possible to use audio guide to understand exhibited pieces.

Frederiksborg Castle

Mentioned on
41 lists
Castle
Nature & Parks
Frederiksborg Castle, a stunning lakeside palace nestled in Hillerod, Denmark, is a treasure trove of Danish and royal history. Originally constructed in the early 17th century for King Christian IV, this magnificent fortress showcases Dutch Renaissance architecture and stands proudly amidst its picturesque moat-lake. Visitors can explore the expansive grounds featuring beautifully manicured baroque gardens and access the central courtyards without charge.
Absolutely stunning! Frederiksborg Castle is without a doubt one of the most impressive baroque palaces I’ve ever visited - and I’ve seen many across Europe. The architecture is grand and elegant, with richly decorated rooms full of history, royal portraits, and fascinating artifacts. The chapel alone is a masterpiece, and knowing that Danish monarchs were crowned there adds a real sense of significance. The surrounding grounds are equally breathtaking. The baroque garden is massive and beautifully kept, offering amazing views of the castle from different angles. You can easily spend hours walking around the lake, gardens, and courtyards. Fun historical note: the castle was built by King Christian IV in the early 1600s and later restored after a major fire, thanks in part to the founder of Carlsberg beer! It now houses Denmark’s National Portrait Gallery and offers a deep dive into Danish royal history. A must-visit if you’re anywhere near Copenhagen — worth the short trip to Hillerød. Peaceful, majestic, and unforgettable. It made me think of some amazing palaces of Peterhoff, Saints Peterburg.
Dmitry Z — Google review
The most beautiful castle i have ever seen, no doubt. We got lucky as well to be able to hear the oldest working organ being played, amazing spectacle, i recommend planning visit according to the schedule of this performance. Wherever you look in this castle there is something beautiful to see. Really amazing and there is a massive beautiful park as well with small coffee shop to sit down, relax and enjoy the view.

This was a great castle! The landscaping was amazing. I would have loved to go inside but we were running out of time. Scenic, picturesque - definitely recommend
Nikhil N — Google review
Frederiksborg Castle is a grand and beautiful castle located about an hour from Copenhagen 🇩🇰. You can take a train to Hillerød Station, and from there it’s an easy 1 km walk to the castle 🚶‍♂️. Entry fee is 110 DKK per person, and the castle is surrounded by stunning gardens and a peaceful lake that make the whole place truly picturesque 🌿🏰. When we visited, some parts were under renovation, and the museum inside didn’t have much that was interactive. Still, the architecture and royal atmosphere make it a pleasant visit, especially if you love history and photography 📸. If you’re short on time, we’d recommend visiting Kronborg and Rosenborg first, and then Frederiksborg — in that order ⏱️. Each has its own charm, but Kronborg and Rosenborg felt more engaging overall ✨.
YG T — Google review
Nice place to visit if you are staying in Copenhagen and have half a day extra time! The castle is surrounded by a very beautiful park and a nice lake. The museum also worth visiting, if you are interested in danish history!
Saeed M — Google review
Why visit? ✅ If limited on time, tour the grounds for free (no cost). ✅ Regarding the grounds, there are so many different views to enjoy while walking the property: gardens, waterfronts, bridges, courtyards, etc. ✅ The castle interior (admission required) is loaded with artwork, antiques, and rooms that stun with both size and intricate detail. Why skip? Honestly, I can’t think of any reason. If limited on time, at least walk to the grounds to get a good look. If spending a day in town, this is THE attraction to visit.
Troy W — Google review
This is a lovely easy day trip out of Copenhagen. A single 40 minute ride on the E train to Hillerød station then a 15 minute walk or short bus ride to the castle. The castle is huge and rarely crowded, but the vast rooms, artwork, and gardens are gorgeous. Check out the tour times before you visit - we were lucky to arrive just in time for the English language tour and it was superb. The castle is an easy walk from town, but there’s also a small boat which does a lap of the lake and for a small fee takes you to the garden and the far side of the castle.
Stephen S — Google review
We knew this place was one of those 'must see' locations on the island of Sjælland and I vaguely remembered going there when I was 12, entry is also included within the Copenhagen Card. We had actually spent the entire day in Copenhagen the day previously and so had always planned to head north the following morning. We were back at Tivoli by the afternoon so definitely recommend this as a day if you've the stamina. Very impressive castle and worth the visit. It would probably have been better a few weeks later when the wee boat on the Slotssøen was running again (too early in the season) but then I imagine you'd want more than just a morning in the area when the weather is warmer too. The bonus was that it was really quiet - you'll see from the photos we were often the only family in these huge and spectacular rooms.

The Museum of National History, located in Hillerod, Denmark, is housed within the impressive Frederiksborg Castle. The castle was originally built by Frederik II and later expanded by his son Christian IV into the largest Renaissance castle in the Nordics. Inside, visitors can explore 500 years of Danish history through a collection of royal art, artifacts, paintings, furniture, and handicrafts. The museum also offers an interactive 'Children's History of Denmark' exhibition to engage younger visitors.
So beautiful!! I recommend downloading the app and listening to the audio tour. Great information. The architecture and gardens are really amazing.

An impressive castle with amazing ceilings. The exhibition was typical for European castles with lots of furniture and paintings. Visiting in the winter, it was quite cold some places and the rooms were mostly not well lit.

This museum is VERY LARGE has so many exhibitations big and small displaying the way the people and the animals declared history with their inventions and rarity towards this earth. I believe this museum is sacred and beautiful because it has so much to show and offer to New York

Frederiksborg Castle Gardens

Park
Sights & Landmarks
Located in the charming town of Hillerod, Denmark, Frederiksborg Castle Gardens are an essential part of the experience when visiting the magnificent Frederiksborg Castle. The gardens consist of two distinct sections: The Baroque Gardens and the Landscape Gardens. Visitors can take a relaxing walk, enjoy the picturesque lake and apple garden, and even have a family picnic while taking in captivating views of the castle.
Frederiksborg Castle Gardens is an absolutely enchanting place to visit! The meticulously landscaped gardens feature beautiful flower beds, intricate hedges, and elegant fountains, all set against the backdrop of the stunning Frederiksborg Castle. Highly recommended!
Eric L — Google review
One of the most beautiful formal gardens I’ve ever seen! The Baroque Gardens at Frederiksborg Castle are a stunning example of royal landscape design at its finest. Carefully laid out in the 1720s under King Frederik IV, these gardens were meant to mirror the elegance and power of the monarchy - everything is precise, symmetrical, and grand in scale. The main garden is built along a central axis that perfectly aligns with the castle, offering jaw-dropping views from every angle. You’ll see beautifully trimmed hedges, cascading terraces, ornamental flower beds, fountains, and statues - all reflecting the ideals of 18th-century harmony and control over nature. A fun historical fact: the garden was nearly lost to time. It was restored in the 1990s using original 18th-century plans, so what you’re seeing today is a faithful recreation of the royal garden as it looked almost 300 years ago! There’s also a more natural, romantic-style English garden nearby that contrasts with the formal Baroque section - a peaceful area for walking and reflection. Don’t skip the gardens - they’re an essential part of the Frederiksborg experience. Bring a camera, take your time, and enjoy the regal tranquility. A true hidden gem just outside Copenhagen.
Dmitry Z — Google review
Amazing location. The garden with the castle in the background looks absolutely magnificent. After spending our day up in Tisvildeje we decided to stop by Frederiksborg Slot. We arrived there at around 19:00 so we didn't have the chance to take a look at the inside of the castle. However, just walking in the gardens and seeing the castle from outside made our stop more than worth it. Sadly the castle is currently undergoing restoration so we didn't see it in its full glory, but maybe I'll visit it once again after construction is complete :) Highly recommending this place
Wyvern — Google review
It's a bit far from central Copenhagen, requiring a train ride, but this meticulously maintained garden is absolutely worth seeing.

We stumbled upon the Gardens on an accident as we were heading to Copenhagen. But I am so glad we did. We spent a few hours just walking, relaxing and enjoying the sun. The beautiful bells of the castle played some tunes to the evening sun. Even as the castle was closed by this time it was worth the visit!
Laura R — Google review
Very nice ones but the five stars are deserved for gardens like Florentine Boboli's ones. Worth a visit, though. Pay attention that the end of the garden is when you get to the small lake on the top of the uphill. Nice sight of the castle from there.

Lovely place! It has one of the best sunset views in Denmark. The beach is sandy and you can walk or run around the whole place. It is located at an hours' drive from the city center and is also well connected by trains. You can also have one of the best fish and chips in and around the local shops here.

It's a fantastic place for a delicious bite. People are very friendly and you get a chance to try the local cuisine, whether it's fish or fast food that you're into. As soon as the sun comes out, the harbour is crowded with people, which brings life to the community. Off season, you can still enjoy the nature, near Gilleleje Havn, with ample opportunity to enjoy the scenery and spectacular nature.

A wonderful place when each and everyone can experience nature therapy. Every year, the research team organised guided tours very nicely organised and they present their projects, environmental topics and research opportunities. Everything is nicely organised, with free coffee, tea and chocolate. For children they prepared some maps and treasure hunting, while the place is accessible to anyone. The place is quite popular during the weekend and people have to be patient in finding a parking spot, while there are always available places to park ones bicycle.

Carlsberg Brand Store

Store
Museums
The Carlsberg Brand Store is a must-visit gift shop located at the Carlsberg brewery complex, offering a wide range of logo merchandise and beverages. Even if you're not a beer enthusiast, it's worth exploring this iconic location where all the magic happens.
It was a unique experience for me to know about the history of Beer and understand the process of making the beer. I personally liked the area where they showcased beers from different countries around the world. Including a beer into the tour price was a great way to end the tour. Being a fan and a consumer of Carlsberg over the years, I could say for sure the freshly brewed beer I had during the tour was the best Carlsberg I ever had. Truly a wonderful experience.
Sai K — Google review
The experience was interesting, more so from a historical perspective for me. Amazed to see how things have moved on since. The place needs some TLC, but overall the visit was good. There is plenty of merchandise to binge on along with, of course Carlsberg beer. Free entry with the Copenhagen card. Credit cards accepted. There are shuttle free bus services from some of the train stations. Recommended.
Satish C — Google review
I have to admit that my expectations was probably to high ,anyway I still think that the normal entrance ticket should have a more interactive tour .Part of the area was also under construction and we had some difficulty to find the correct place .The tasting was great they give you 3 different beers :blonde ,india pale ale ,and a dark and you definitely go out of there more happy : ) .And then you get another beer outside so the price was good if I think about the drink. You can also take something to eat inside but I didn't tried .I will suggest to visit this place for sure .
Cristina P — Google review
We went as soon as it opened as we had Copenhagen pass we wanted to use up last couple of hours. The tour itself alone was not so entertaining more emphasis is on history than process of making Carlsberg itself. What was the most enjoyable part was the horses, and the beer garden outside was really nice and the give you one beer to sample. There is also Rose wine, Cider and soft drinks for those who don't drink alcohol
Antoinette B — Google review
Fun visit. No need for the guide tour. Just reading the info in the exhibition is ok. The horses are very cute! Good to have free beer after the visit. Great food in the bar!
Alice T — Google review
We went there on a Friday eve for the usual "night at the brewery" event. Tried several brews, best was the brown ale for me. A big, light hall full of tables, resembles of a German pub, live DJ, mostly young crowd. A simple but fun exhibition of the smells of different characters of beer on site, friendly service but we were too late for the food. The location is a bit difficult to approach, don't be fooled by the maps, take the bridge at the bus stop, not the one closest to the site. A good Friday eve activity, a local touch.
Adam S — Google review
A great place to visit if you've got time during your stay and free drinks in the bar at the end. It's probably the best museum in the world!
Timbovilla 7 — Google review
I had an excellent experience at the Carlsberg Factory! There was lots to do at the Factory and fill the time. The tour was very interesting and had one of the world's largest beer bottle collections! After you are finished the tour you can visit the stable and get a free horse and carriage ride which I felt was very enjoyable although some tourists can be very rude about getting the ride, on from 12:00-14:00 so better to go about 12:30 to avoid rude customers. When I was visiting the staff also had a free sampling session in the store (although I'm not sure this happens all the time) which was great as I sampled many free beers I had never tasted before. Afterwards there is a free half pint of beer which really goes down well in the weather!! There is also a free shuttle bus to and from the factory every hour from 11:00 which greatly helped. Overall I really enjoyed my experience and I would recommend it to anyone!!

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, Denmark showcases an impressive collection of international contemporary and modern art dating back to 1945. The museum also features temporary exhibitions and is suitable for all ages. Visitors can bring their own food and drinks or dine at the cafeteria/restaurant. The facility is easily accessible with baby strollers and boasts creative spaces for children to play and create.
Super fun place to examine modern art. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of modern art but this place was a lot of fun. The sculpture garden was the highlight but in a very special way. Be sure to first experience seeing the sculptures from inside the museum as you peruse the other exhibits then experience them from the outside. This made me really appreciate how well the sculpture and the building integrates with each other and with the surrounding environment - both the rise and fall of the property and the background of the sea and sky. Just a superb experience.

About an hour by train outside of Copenhagen city centre and then 10 minutes walk from Humlebaek station. The ticket can be book online but it was also super easy to buy it on arrival with no queue when we go on Sunday midday. There are a little bit of outdoor sculptures and some indoor gallery. Nice view and some interesting displays. There are 2 gift shops, one on the ground floor and one downstairs. I had a fun train ride.

This museum is a wonderful reason to take a short trip and experience another side of Denmark beyond Copenhagen. It offers a great opportunity to focus on and appreciate the works of talented contemporary artists. The outdoor installations, in particular, blend beautifully with the gardens and surrounding landscape. The number of artworks feels just right—not overwhelming—allowing you to take your time, enjoy the scenery, and relax as you explore, especially on a pleasant day.

Really amazing museum. Large galleries, beautiful outdoor space with ocean views, great 2-story gift shop and restaurant. Plan to spend about 2.5 hours wondering around. Really enjoyed the exhibits and architecture. We bought our tickets online and they were good for one use within one year of the time of purchase. The train ride is about an hour from downtown Copenhagen.

Beautiful museum, really recommend the trip out of the city to visit. Great, easy train journey too with a short walk to the museum which is set in the most fabulous building and grounds. We booked tickets in advance so we didn’t have to queue, which id recommend if you can. Loved the sculpture garden, definitely go on a dry day so you can make the most of the gardens and the views over the water. Wonderful cafe, with space to eat/drink outside in the sun. Great coffee. Beautiful shop with loads of fab design based gifts, art prints, ceramics, books and accessories. Cloakroom space through the back of the shop to store bags and coats in lockers is so useful. A card machine is available for those without local coins to use.

After being to several modern arts meseums I think they are not for my taste.I have to be objective tho. I think the exhibitions were smartly and beautifuly placed. The place itself was clean and not overcrowded. Nice cafe to relax, have a drink or a snack. Beautiful views at the sea while you walk in the garden area.

Visiting the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art was one of the highlights of our Copenhagen trip; it made for such a beautiful day out of the city. The museum is located in Humlebæk, about 35–40 minutes north of Copenhagen. We took the train and the journey was quick, scenic and very comfortable; once you arrive it’s only a short 10 walk from the station to the entrance ( just follow the crowd) The museum first opened in 1958 and was created with the vision of making modern art accessible in a place where people could experience it alongside nature rather than in a formal or intimidating setting. The architecture is stunning! Designed by Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert, and the layout feels thoughtful and calm. There are long corridors of glass, open courtyards, natural light everywhere and pathways that lead you between indoor gallery spaces and the outdoors. It’s the kind of building where you notice something beautiful around every corner. The museum is known for showcasing both international and Danish modern and contemporary artists. They have an incredible permanent collection, and new exhibitions are rotated throughout the year so there is always something fresh to experience. The sculpture garden overlooking the sea might have been my favourite part; walking through the garden with large scale artworks and hearing the ocean just behind them felt very special. Inside there are two places to eat: one café outdoors along the sculpture garden path, and one beautiful indoor restaurant with large windows facing the ocean. We stopped at the restaurant and enjoyed a glass of wine and something delicious to eat while looking out over the coastline; such a peaceful moment in the middle of exploring. There is also a fantastic gift shop filled with design pieces, prints, books and souvenirs. Perfect if you want to take something home to remember your visit. This museum is big; we spent nearly the entire day there and I’m glad we didn’t rush. We took our time walking through the exhibitions, stopping for breaks, sitting outside, and exploring the gardens. It is absolutely the kind of place where slowing down makes the experience even better. Entry tickets cost 145 DKK for adults, with students holding a valid student card paying 125 DKK. Children and young adults under 18 have free entry. We bought our tickets on arrival and there was no wait at all, which made our visit feel relaxed from the start. Opening hours when we visited were Tuesday to Friday from 11:00 to 22:00, and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 to 18:00; the museum is closed on Mondays. I imagine summer weekends are the busiest, so if you prefer a quieter experience, weekdays are probably ideal. A quote that came to mind while wandering around was “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” It felt fitting, because this place truly lifts something inside you. If you are visiting Copenhagen and want a day where art, architecture and nature come together beautifully, I highly recommend coming here. It’s calming, inspiring and incredibly memorable; I would happily return again.

Lovely museum situated in a gorgeous place looking out on the ocean and Sweden. Loved some of the art, hated some of the art - the perfect modern art experience. The grounds were fun to explore and linked together with the sculptures and exhibition wings beautifully. Amazing shop as well, I wish I had more money as I would happily take most of it home

Nature & Parks
Tivoli Gardens is a 19th-century amusement park located in the heart of Copenhagen. It features an antique roller coaster and a live entertainment program, making it a magical and traditional attraction. The park is the second-oldest operating amusement park globally and one of the most popular seasonal theme parks, attracting nearly five million visitors annually.
Had such a fun day at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen! The autumn vibes were magical, and the park looks absolutely stunning as the lights come on in the evening. I highly recommend going late afternoon so you can enjoy it in daylight and then see it sparkle at night. The food was delicious, the rides and attractions were super fun, and the whole day just felt so cozy and special. A must-visit for anyone in Copenhagen! 🎡🍂✨
Lianne H — Google review
An excellent park although off to a skeptical start when I saw the first ride we went on had a member of staff on to "pull the brake". Lots of rides to suit all with a fair number of "tummy turners". Queues were small and the facilities such as food and toilets were at a good standard. We used the Copenhagen card to get in but you need to pay extra for the rides. Was quite cold when we were there so dress appropriately. The teenage kids enjoyed it so that's a thumbs up !
Alex J — Google review
Absolutely fantastic at Christmas! So beautiful love the trees the rides and all the shops. It’s expensive to visit at £28 per person but you can go in the day and get a re entry stamp And come back in the evening to see it all lit up. Also I saw families who took a picnic with them. This is a great idea as it’s a beautiful place to have a picnic and a glass of wine in the gardens. The lake is stunning at night. It gets very busy.
Monisha A — Google review
Its ok. If you're into food? Then great there's a lot of restaurants. There's only one roller-coaster and a few other attractions. Its expensive especially since all we wanted to do was look at the Christmas decorations. It looks amazing at night all lit up but still not worth $30 dollars.
Damian R — Google review
Visited mid November, weather was pleasant during the hours of 5pm-8pm Fair amount of people about but not crowded and easy to navigate. Christmas themed throughout giving it that magic touch for this time of season. Much like the rest of Copenhagen nothing is cheap and being at the theme park its most likely a little bit more
Adam P — Google review
Tivoli Gardens was at the very top of my list when we visited Copenhagen; and it honestly exceeded every expectation. We visited in early September during the Flower Festival and the whole place felt absolutely beautiful with bursts of colour everywhere. Tivoli first opened in 1843 which is wild to think about, and you can really feel that old world charm as soon as you walk in. There’s a lovely little story that Walt Disney visited Tivoli and was so inspired by its atmosphere and attention to detail that it helped inspire Disneyland; when you’re inside, that makes complete sense. We ended up spending nearly the entire day here; wandering through the gardens, listening to jazz bands play, popping into the little Christmas shops (yes, even in September), admiring the flower competition winners and going on a few of the rides. At one point I turned to my husband and said, “I feel like a kid again.” There was something so nostalgic and joyful about it, like stepping back into the magic of childhood. There are plenty of places to eat inside Tivoli depending on what you feel like; everything from quick bites and coffee to full sit down restaurants and even the beautiful Nimb Hotel right in the middle of it all. The food court is great if you want something casual and fast before exploring more. I also loved how different the park feels as the day turns into evening; during the day it’s lush and garden like, and then at night all the twinkle lights come on and it feels dreamy and romantic. Tivoli is open in different seasons throughout the year including Halloween and Christmas; I heard that November and December are extra special because Tivoli transforms into a Christmas wonderland with decorations, lights, markets and a completely different festive atmosphere. I would honestly love to go back in December just to experience that version of the park. Opening hours change depending on the season but it stays open late enough that you don’t need to rush. My biggest tip is to give yourself enough time. This isn’t the kind of place you speed through; it’s somewhere you stroll, snack, listen to music, ride the rides and just enjoy being there. Tivoli was one of the most memorable experiences of our Copenhagen trip; if you’re visiting the city, this is a must. It’s truly one of those rare places that makes you feel happy, light and a little bit enchanted.

Excellent theme park. We visited as decorated and themed for Christmas Was surprisingly a lot better than anticipated. Prices for ultimate tickets purchased on Get your Guide . Around £45 each . Great value. Lots to see and do. Food prices are similar to those around the city

This is one of the oldest amusement park in the world but it is well maintained. All the decoration and pop up events are to the point. Well decorated for the Halloween 🎃! ++ point: the food at the foodcourt is very tasty and wide range of selection.

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

Art museum
Museums
Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is a captivating fine art museum that showcases a diverse collection of ancient Mediterranean sculptures, 19th-century French and Danish artworks. The museum offers an immersive experience for art enthusiasts, featuring artifacts from ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Visitors can also explore the impressive winter garden within the museum's premises, providing a picturesque setting for artistic inspiration.
Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is an absolute treasure for anyone who appreciates timeless art and refined curation. From the moment you walk through its grand halls, you’re transported into a world of elegance, history, and cultural richness. The museum is beautifully maintained, and every space — from the central winter garden to the majestic marble galleries — feels thoughtfully preserved and respectfully presented. I especially loved the vast collection of classical art — Greek, Roman, and Egyptian antiquities that are truly world-class. The 19th-century Danish and French collections, with works by artists like Rodin, Degas, and Gauguin, are equally impressive and thoughtfully displayed. One of the biggest highlights is the rooftop terrace, which offers stunning panoramic views over Copenhagen. It’s peaceful, not overly crowded, and provides a perfect pause between exhibits. I truly appreciated that this museum didn’t overload the experience with disjointed, ultra-modern bizarre conceptual art that many other museums now seem obsessed with. Here, the focus remains where it should: on quality, craftsmanship, and the enduring power of the classical tradition. The Nordic and Germanic nations have a rich cultural legacy, and the Glyptotek honors that brilliantly. The staff was kind, professional, and welcoming — clearly proud of the institution they help run. Whether you’re an art lover, a history enthusiast, or simply someone who values beauty over trends, this place is a must-visit in Copenhagen.
Dmitry Z — Google review
Beautiful museum! I absolutely love when museums are filled with statues and this one was filled with them! The building is stunning as well, with sort of an indoor garden by the entrance and big rooms filled with artwork. There’s also a rooftop which was a surprise and has a stunning view of Copenhagen. The reason why I’m not giving them more stars is because of how rude the staff were in the mummy section. There were two young boys (staff apparently) who kept whispering and talking to each other without caring there were people in the room. It completely ruined the vibe and I felt really uncomfortable. I understand it gets boring down there and you need to pass the time, but could you NOT talk when people are there? The amusement park is next door so you will probably hear some screams thought out the museum which was also creepy at times but inevitable. Overall I recommend it. I spent around 2/3 hours there and think I managed to see most of it. You can purchase the ticket online with the QR by the entrance and it’s cheaper. Video of the cute plushies! So expensive tho.

A must-visit museum in Copenhagen! The Glyptotek is absolutely stunning, a perfect blend of art, history, and architecture. The collection ranges from ancient sculptures to impressionist masterpieces, beautifully displayed in serene galleries. The central winter garden is breathtaking, and the overall atmosphere feels peaceful and inspiring. I could easily spend hours here. Truly one of Copenhagen’s cultural gems!
Giorgos G — Google review
Glyptoteket is, hands down, the most beautiful museum in Copenhagen. The atmosphere inside is incredible – there’s really nothing else like it, especially when you walk through the Winter Garden. It’s such a peaceful and stunning space. The exhibitions are great too, especially if you’re into ancient Greek and Roman culture. That’s definitely my favourite part of the museum. I also really enjoy the Egyptian section, and it’s super cool to go downstairs and see the mummies. They do have other exhibitions with paintings, but that’s not really my thing, so I usually skip those. For me, it’s all about walking around and admiring the statues
Anne L — Google review
I think this might be one of my favorite museums I have visited in my life so far. The statues were incredibly moving and beautiful, and the interior of the museum was breathtaking, every corner is designed with such attention to detail. The exhibitions are also very interesting, and I would definitely recommend a visit to anyone coming to Copenhagen. The museum also has a restaurant and bar where you can enjoy a drink or a snack, as well as a shop with unique items if you’d like to take something home. Plan at least 1 to 2 hours for your visit. Unfortunately, we only had 45 minutes since we arrived close to closing time, but it was still worth it!
Arzu A — Google review
One of my favourite museums in the world, absolutely love the range of art and artists. Impressive selection of French artists, if you love sculpture then it is a great place to visit. It’s also a beautiful, well curated environment to boot.

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is one of Denmark’s most iconic art museums, founded by the Carlsberg brewery’s visionary creator. The museum houses thousands of rare and precious works — from Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome to 19th-century European masterpieces by renowned artists like Rodin, Degas, and Gauguin. A unique highlight is the Winter Garden, a stunning indoor oasis filled with lush greenery and natural light — the perfect place to pause and soak in the timeless atmosphere between the galleries. Good to know: Admission is free on the last Wednesday of each month, so don’t miss the chance to explore this world-class collection at no cost.
Huu V — Google review
Beautiful museum with a wonderful indoor garden/courtyard, ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, and an amazing Ancient Egypt exhibit with real mummies and art from 5,000 years ago. They also have interesting audio to listen to where you can put on headphones and listen to an expert describe more about the art. I listened to the one where an expert on hieroglyphs described what an ancient stele was describing. One of my favorite museums. Good to note if you want to go that buying tickets online is cheaper.

Museums
The National Museum of Denmark, housed in an 18th-century mansion, is a captivating journey through the country's history and culture. From prehistoric artifacts to modern exhibits, the museum offers an extensive collection that appeals to history enthusiasts, families, and anyone curious about Denmark's cultural tapestry. Visitors can explore Viking relics, medieval treasures, and ethnographic displays. The Children's Museum provides interactive entertainment for kids with a range of activities including exploring vintage toys and dressing up like historical figures.
I was only intending to pop in and have a quick look but ended up spending most of the day there, looking at all of the various rooms and displays. There is a lot to see and is a great place to see aspects of Danish history as well as other cultures. I am generally not a museum fan, but this was an eye-opener! There is a fantastic cafe too for the midday break.
Victor ( — Google review
The museum takes you on a fascinating journey through different historical periods, guiding you from one age to another in a thoughtfully organized layout. From the outside, it appears rather modest in size, but once inside, it reveals a surprisingly vast and intricate space. I actually found it easy to lose my sense of direction there—not unpleasantly so, but in that way where every turn leads to another hidden room or unexpected display. The collection itself is impressive. Many ornaments, tools, fabrics, and even preserved human remains are remarkably well-maintained, offering a vivid glimpse into the past. The diversity of materials on display—ranging from everyday items to ceremonial artifacts—makes the experience rich and engaging for history enthusiasts. However, the space does show signs of wear. Some of the doors are noticeably old, creaky, and could use maintenance. The walls and ceilings in certain areas have peeling paint or water stains, which somewhat take away from the immersive atmosphere. A bit of renovation would go a long way in enhancing the visitor experience and doing justice to the fascinating collection housed within. The museum shop, while convenient, felt a bit underwhelming. The items were fairly standard and lacked the kind of creativity or uniqueness one might expect from such a distinctive museum. There's definitely room for more inspired and memorable souvenirs.
Maysam N — Google review
AMAZING place! We were blown away by the huge collection of ancient artifacts. This museum has an extensive collection of pieces that are in fantastic condition, or really well restored. We spent hours and did not even get to the Danish history section. There is an interesting multidimensional Viking exhibit that was "interesting". Worth the visit.
J P — Google review
A great place to learn about history of Denmark. I was lucky to be there during the Viking Sorceress exhibition. It was super cool! The staff was friendly and helpful. A lot of runes and norse god souvenirs were available at the museum store, too.

Good big museum with multiple levels and buildings! Vast varieties of many contents and really interesting things to see! There is a little children playground in the middle of the complex but only for children and with an extra fees. (I saw a Viking set up with a guys dress in the Viking style but we can't go in as an adult 😞) The Doll House section was super impressive with the number and size of the room and a day and night alternative as well! Many cool facts and items to see and read through! You can easily spend a couple hours to just even walk through all the rooms! Definitely a very interesting place to visit in Copenhagen!
Penny G — Google review
The National Museum of Denmark is an essential stop for anyone with an interest in Viking heritage, Norse mythology, or the broader story of Denmark’s past. The Viking exhibition is especially impressive — featuring original swords, rune stones, burial artifacts, and mythological pieces that truly evoke the spirit of the Norse world. The displays are thoughtful and immersive, making the history feel very much alive. The museum also offers an excellent overview of Denmark’s transformation from early tribal societies into a European maritime kingdom. The royal and military exhibits provide fascinating insights into diplomacy, warfare, and national identity through the centuries. One of the highlights for me was how seamlessly the museum combines archaeological discoveries with historical storytelling. It’s well-curated, deeply informative, and emotionally resonant — especially for those passionate about Nordic culture. A quick note for summer visitors: some galleries can feel extremely warm due to limited airflow in certain areas. It’s a good idea to bring water and wear lighter clothing if you’re visiting on a hot day. That said, the richness of the exhibits more than makes up for it. Highly recommended for history lovers and curious minds alike!
Dmitry Z — Google review
This museum provides an incredibly comprehensive overview of the history of Denmark. The scale of the exhibits is very extensive so it may be suggest to plan your visit carefully depending on your areas of interest. The upper floors of the museum have a great selection of exhibits about Danish history from the Early-Modern period of the 1600s to the modern day. There is also a fascinating permanent exhibition about the history and legacy of Denmark’s colonial empire and makes a significant effort to assess the positive and negative impacts of this colonial legacy across Africa, China, Greenland, Iceland, India, and the Danish West Indies (now the US Virgin Islands) using modern interviews and historical perspectives and first person accounts to enhance the exhibits on display.

Sights & Landmarks
The Round Tower, also known as Rundetarn, is a remarkable 17th-century structure in Copenhagen. It was originally built as an astronomical observatory and features a unique spiral ramp instead of traditional stairs. Visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the city from this architectural gem while experiencing its rich history. The gradual ascent makes it accessible to all, appealing to history buffs, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone seeking breathtaking vistas of Copenhagen.
Nice view from the top, you can also take a peek into the observatory up there. That's is also a shop with beautifully designed items (notebooks, post cards, posters, etc) that's adjacent to an art school exhibition. Plus you can take a look into the church's attic and learn about historic stuff

Totally worth the visit! It has a very cool architecture spiraling all the way to the top, ending with a rooftop deck, amazing views and also an observatory. It has some art installations inside too.

Great attraction right in the city center. The ticket costs around €8. The climb is easy, with very few steps, and the views from the top are beautiful — you can see the entire city from above. There’s also a small museum and a small art exhibition inside. I didn’t visit many attractions in Copenhagen, but I’m glad I visited this one.

Not to be missed. The line was short (on a late Saturday morning). Built under the direction of Danish monarch Christian IV between 1637 and 1642, this impressive tower offers stunning views of the København skyline along with the Øresund Bridge and Sweden in the distance. There are stairs only at the top; the sloping ascent made it possible for Christian IV to view his realm while riding in his carriage.
John Q — Google review
Beautiful building and it was awesome that the tower's path is the slope so it was such a nice way to travel up and down the building, I love it! Fantastic view of the city skyline at the top with a cool astronomy tower within ☀️🌙⭐🔭 There are bathrooms, shop, and gallery half way up the path. You can find a little details about the building and a replica look like it made from cork. Also an art gallery at the shop. The old bathroom was very small and interesting 😁 The final path way up the Round tower is a narrow tight space stairs so you have to wait for the lights to go up and come back down as there is only enough space for a one way traffic. It took up about an hour to get up, look around, and come back out. Definitely a recommendation of things to do in Copenhagen!
Penny G — Google review
A nice walk up the round tower! Not staircases, just a walkway like walking or driving up a multi-story parking. 😃 lovely 360 views at the top if the weather permits. Lucky when we went it was dry and sunny so it was just perfect!

Stroget is a famous pedestrian boulevard in Copenhagen, known for its wide range of shops, cafes, and even a Guinness museum. In the 1960s, due to increasing traffic and crowded narrow streets in central Copenhagen, the City Council decided to create a car-free zone from Town Hall Square to Kongens Nytorv, establishing Stroget as the world's oldest and longest pedestrian street system at almost 3.2 km.

Rosenborg Castle is a well-preserved Dutch Renaissance palace located in the King's Garden, featuring stunning architecture and a rich history. Built in the early 17th century as a summer residence for Danish monarchs, it boasts red brick facades, copper-green roofs, and intricate ornamentation. Today, it serves as a museum showcasing lavish rooms, tapestries, and artwork. The basement houses the Danish Crown Jewels and royal regalia such as crowns and scepters.
Worth to visit. You need to have a half of day to visit them leisurely. Otherwise you have to run and you will miss those. In the castle there are two parts. Furniture, cloths , drawings are in 3/4 floors. Treasury is in the ground. Don’t miss to visit treasure. There is sanitary facilities too They have a garden as well. You can spend the time there. You can buy tickets over the counter. And there are lockers to keep your bags in. You can have the key. It’s free. They dont allow you to go inside with large bags ( even handbag)

Rosenborg Castle is a historic site in central Copenhagen, best known for housing the Danish Crown Jewels and Royal Regalia. The rooms are well-preserved and give a good overview of Denmark’s royal history. The Treasury in the basement is a highlight. The surrounding King’s Garden is open to the public and great for a walk. Worth a visit if you're interested in history or culture. Buy tickets in advance to avoid lines.

Rosenborg Castle is a wonderful place to visit: full of history, charm, and beautifully preserved treasures. The interiors and royal collections are fascinating. However, the exhibition lighting could be improved, as some areas were quite dim and it was difficult to see certain displays clearly. Overall, still a great experience and definitely worth visiting!

Well truely a marvel of the history. Absolutely loved the aura of the castle and its surroundings. There is big park and lake in front of the castle. It is easy to get to the place, thanks to the well connected public transport systems. The architecture of the castle is something that is worth mentioning. I would recommend to read and learn about the history of the palace before visiting it so that you can just relive the past and get a feel of the same. If you are planning to go in a weekend, be prepared to wait for sometime as there would be rush.

Not wheel chair accessible. My first ever Royal Castle. Be prepared for low light conditions. The history is right up and close as I have ever been in a museum setting. So respect the access. I loved looking at all the fine quality work completed by the period artisans and amazing quality especially all the inlay works in wood, tile & gems. Stunning if you live feeling the history. The Royal Treasury is exceptional and shows what was valued and when. Even in October when I went the Gardens were blooming.

Beautiful and well-kept heritage. I tried to visit the day after the Copenhagen half-marathon, but I didn't have time to get tickets online so that I couldn't get inside. I recommend buying tickets in advance. However, upon walking around, I can say that this is one of the most beautiful castles I have seen recently, compared to what I saw in England.
Ivan V — Google review
Cool old castle. Lots of history. Some interesting stuff that you don't normally see in a castle like a farting chair and a king's toilet. This is like the old and more castle-ish version of Danish aristocratic housing. For the real palace feel of the monarchy visit Christiansborg Palace. The royal family actually live in nearby Amelienborg.
Michael L — Google review
Beautiful site and an easy walk from the waterfront. You can also peek at the King’s Gardens out back — immaculately kept, of course. The day pass is worth it for convenient access to the castle. Free lockers are a nice touch, and the guards with bayonets add a bit of royal drama. Inside, the halls are filled with art and artifacts — the grand hall with the thrones and lion statues is a standout. Don’t miss the Crown Jewels in the walk-in vault downstairs, complete with a step ladder for the perfect view. A truly regal visit, well worth the stop.

Christiansborg Palace

Christiansborg Palace is a must-see in Copenhagen, Denmark. It's home to the Danish Parliament, the Prime Minister's office, and the Supreme Court of Denmark. The palace also houses government and judicial offices. Visitors can explore its lavish reception rooms like the Great Hall, Tower Hall, and Oval Throne Room. Don't miss the royal kitchen and the remains of an older castle beneath the main building. The palace has a rich history spanning over 800 years and covers a large area.
I only had time to visit the royal reception rooms and the experience was already beyond my expectation. The Queen's Tapestries at the Knights' Hall were jaw-dropping. 1,100 years of Danish history were woven into 17 colourful tapestries. They were modern and educative. If I had more time, I would spend all day looking at them and try to learn the history/stories in each of them.

Christiansborg Palace is a historic palace in Copenhagen, Denmark, that now houses the country's three branches of government: the Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Ministry of State. Once a royal residence, it is open to the public and features attractions like the Royal Reception Rooms, the Royal Stables, and a viewing tower with panoramic city views. Visitors can also explore the underground ruins of earlier castles that stood on the site.
Randy B — Google review
The grand, grandeur and wonderful castle in the heart of Copenhagen. What a splendid way the castle is decorated and preserved and still active. Such display of wealth is dazzling. They have visuals and videos of the historical aspect of the castle. Interesting to go through them and better for kids to enhance their knowledge.

Visiting Christiansborg Palace was one of the highlights of my time in Copenhagen. The palace itself is a beautiful blend of history and functionality, serving as a working government building while also offering visitors a chance to explore royal reception rooms, historic halls, and underground ruins. Walking through the palace felt like stepping through layers of Danish history, where modern governance and royal tradition exist side by side. The climb to the top of the tower was absolutely worth it. The viewing platform offered one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the city. From above, I could see the colorful rooftops, winding canals, and the orderly beauty of Copenhagen stretching in every direction. The view was especially impressive because it felt peaceful and expansive, giving a sense of the city’s balance between tradition, water, and urban life. Christiansborg is a must-see for anyone who wants both rich history and a stunning perspective of Copenhagen from above. It is a perfect combination of cultural depth and unforgettable views.

Christiansborg Palace is a unique and fascinating destination in Copenhagen, blending royal splendor with the seat of modern democracy. It’s one of the only buildings in the world that houses all three branches of a country’s government — the Danish Parliament, Supreme Court, and Prime Minister’s Office — all within a former royal palace. That alone makes it worth visiting. Architecturally, Christiansborg is an imposing and elegant structure built in Neo-Baroque style with touches of Neo-Classicism, especially visible in its formal reception halls. The current palace is actually the third iteration — previous versions were destroyed by fire in 1794 and again in 1884. What you see today is the result of a rebuild completed in the early 20th century, blending old grandeur with modern sensibilities. The tall central tower is the highest in Copenhagen and offers free public access with panoramic city views. Inside, the Royal Reception Rooms are a highlight, especially the Great Hall with its striking modern tapestries depicting Danish history, designed by artist Bjørn Nørgaard. The Queen still uses these rooms for official state functions, adding a sense of living history to the experience. You can also explore the Royal Stables, the Royal Kitchen, and the underground ruins, where remnants of the medieval Bishop’s Castle and earlier palaces have been preserved. In short, Christiansborg may not have the romantic fairy-tale look of some other castles, but it offers something deeper — a powerful connection between Denmark’s royal past and its modern democracy. A rewarding and educational visit, especially for those interested in history, architecture, and politics.
Dmitry Z — Google review
I visit Christiansborg all the time as a local guide, and it’s one of those places that keeps revealing new layers. The palace sits on top of centuries of history. In the 1100s, Bishop Absalon built the first fortress here, and the remains of that medieval castle are still visible in the underground ruins. It’s a pretty wild feeling to walk below the modern parliament and stand inside what used to be Copenhagen’s very first stronghold. On my tours, I often see the royal horses in the courtyard, which always adds a bit of magic. A couple of tips if you go: ride the elevator up to the tower for one of the best panoramic free views in the city, and book a meal at Restaurant Tårnet if you have time. It’s cosy, atmospheric and a fun contrast to the political building beneath you. The museums inside the palace are also worth exploring. The royal reception rooms and the ruins under the building give you a much deeper sense of Denmark’s royal and political history. Overall, Christiansborg is one of Copenhagen’s most iconic landmarks and a must-visit if you want to understand the city properly.

The area boasts iconic colorful buildings, lively bars, and cozy cafes along the bustling waterfront. It appeals to photography enthusiasts, food lovers, and those looking for an authentic Danish experience. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls and romantic walks while taking in the vibrant atmosphere.
Looks exactly like all the photos, lovely area either beautiful danish houses, boutiques and souvenirs. There are nice canal side restaurants, boat rest aired, public benches and live buskers all around so you can do a lot without spending much. Careful not to get run over by bikes!
Felicia M — Google review
A very pleasant and lively area. A boat tour is recommended. You can see many places in an hour. I think there are two boat tours. One is very cheap. You should ask about the difference and choose accordingly.
Cem Ö — Google review
Visited Nyhavn over the weekend and absolutely loved it! 🌈 The colorful houses along the canal look stunning, especially on a sunny day ☀️. Tip: for the best photo, click from the opposite side of the canal 📸. Lined with cozy cafes and restaurants, it’s a perfect place to relax, enjoy a meal, and soak in the cheerful Copenhagen vibes 🇩🇰.
YG T — Google review
Nice view to take pictures. Both side of the canal has dozens of shops to hang out and buy souvenirs. All are expensive then what is priced outside of this zone. There is a big obnoxious ship in the canal and it is hard to take a nice reflective photo with the colorful buildings. That is why I personally like the one in Trondheim Norway.
Tas A — Google review
Lively waterfront with many restaurants! I love the atmosphere but it was very crowded at the same time. We had a Thai food at Charm restaurant close by for dinner and the ice cream for dessert just across the road from Vaffelbageren Nyhavn. It's definitely a lovely place to walk around and soak up the vibe!
Penny G — Google review
It's a must see and very photographic landmark area. There are numerous restaurants and small shops. You catch a canal tour here as well. Don't forget to visit the shop where Hans Christian Anderson once lived.

Church of Our Saviour

Church
Sights & Landmarks
The Church of Our Saviour is a stunning 17th-century Baroque place of worship located in Copenhagen. Its impressive Dutch Baroque architecture features a golden spire and a singing bell tower, adorned with vibrant red and yellow tiles. The church offers one of the best viewpoints in the city, with outstanding panoramic views from the top of its spire. Visitors can embark on an exciting excursion by climbing narrow winding stairs to reach the summit, where they can enjoy breathtaking vistas across Copenhagen.
The Church of Our Saviour is one of Copenhagen’s most famous landmarks and a must-visit if you enjoy history, architecture, and incredible city views. The church itself is beautiful, with a striking baroque interior, but the real highlight is climbing the tower. The spiral staircase on the outside of the spire takes you up high above the city, and the views from the top are absolutely stunning, stretching across Copenhagen and even out to Sweden on a clear day. The climb is steep and narrow in places, and the final stretch on the outside can feel a bit dizzying if you’re not great with heights, but the reward at the top is well worth the effort. It’s best to go on a clear day to really appreciate the panoramic view. The tower can get busy, so going early or outside peak hours makes the experience more enjoyable. Overall, the Church of Our Saviour is an unforgettable stop in Copenhagen. Whether for its history, its unique architecture, or the breathtaking views from the tower, it’s an experience that leaves a lasting impression.
R — Google review
Absolutely breathtaking experience! The Church of Our Saviour is not only a beautiful piece of architecture, but also offers one of the very best views of Copenhagen. The spiral staircase up the tower is a little challenging, but that only makes reaching the top more rewarding. Standing outside on the winding staircase with the city right beneath your feet feels magical. You can see all of Copenhagen – from the canals and colorful houses to the modern skyline. Totally worth the climb, and a must-visit spot if you want a unique perspective of the city!
Kalina M — Google review
Beautiful place! Climbing to the top and amdiring views of the city is one of the nicest experiences in Copenhagen. Important note - there is not only a lot of stairs to the top, but in some moments it's narrow and steep stairs. So it's not so easy to get there, but really worth to visit.
Patrycja Z — Google review
If you see one place for free in Copenhagen, see this church. It's spectacular! If you pay for one sight, pay for the ticket to climb the tower. The views are, quite simply, breathtaking. Outstanding 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
David G — Google review
The church is impressive! Did like it from the outside better than from the inside. There is a movie that is shown and it was disappointing that it was only in Danish. I mean with so many tourists please put English subtitles on. The tower is very impressive and the view real beautiful. But please don’t go up if you have vertigo as it is very high AND NARROW. I did expect some kind of platform on the top but the stairs just got more narrow and more narrow and ended at some point. A bit weird to be honest. For what it is I would say it’s not worth your money. If you have to pay please make it better and also the number of people should be less for one time slot. It’s quite hard to cross paths on those narrow and steep stairs. I do give it 4 stars as it is quite unique!
Tiffany — Google review
I visited only the tower... What a view - just make sure you don't suffer from vertigo and can move agile... The view is spectacular but it's really narrow up there. You might wanna go for sunset. We didn't have wind when I was there but I assume once there is... It's not very hygge...
Sarah J — Google review
The Church of Our Saviour is a stunning Baroque landmark from the 17th century. Its most famous feature is the spiral tower with an external staircase, offering breathtaking views over Copenhagen. Inside, you’ll find a beautiful altar and an impressive organ. At 12:00, there is a live organ performance that lasts for about 30 minutes, creating a truly unique atmosphere. A must-visit for history, architecture, and the unforgettable experience of climbing the spire.
Nataliia H — Google review
Church of Our Saviour – Copenhagen A stunning baroque church with one of the best panoramic views in Copenhagen. The highlight is the climb to the top via a unique external spiral staircase—fun and adventurous, but not for the faint-hearted. With over 400 steps, it’s a bit of a workout, and the narrow, winding paths can be challenging for anyone with vertigo. Entry costs €8, and it's well worth it for the view alone.

The Little Mermaid is a famous bronze sculpture in Copenhagen, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's beloved fairy tale. Unveiled in 1913, it sits gracefully on a rock along the waterfront and is a must-see for literature and fairy tale enthusiasts. The site offers serene views of the harbor and appeals to those seeking a contemplative experience. To avoid crowds, visit early in the morning or late afternoon.
The Little Mermaid may be small, but she's full of emotion and history. Sculpted in 1913, she tells the story of love, sacrifice, and longing from Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale. Don't just stop for a photo - walk around the area! You'll find the beautiful Gefion Fountain, St. Alban's Church, and cozy cafés nearby. In spring, especially from mid-April to early May, cherry trees bloom along the paths, making it one of the most romantic walks in Copenhagen. A timeless symbol of beauty and reflection.

Visiting the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen was a memorable experience. The sculpture itself is smaller than I expected, but it’s beautifully placed by the water and has a certain quiet charm. The surroundings are peaceful, with lovely views across the harbor, and it’s a nice spot for a walk. Even though it can get a bit crowded with tourists, it still feels special to see such an iconic landmark in person. A must-visit if you’re exploring Copenhagen!

The Little Mermaid – A Symbol of Copenhagen We visited the famous Little Mermaid statue, and while the statue itself is quite small, it’s definitely worth the visit. Nestled along the waterfront, the surroundings are absolutely beautiful, offering peaceful views and a scenic walk leading up to the site. The walk itself is part of the experience – calm, relaxing, and filled with lovely views of the harbour. Do keep in mind that it’s a popular attraction, so it can get quite crowded. If you're hoping for a quieter moment, consider visiting early in the morning or later in the evening. A charming and iconic stop on any Copenhagen itinerary.
Mark H — Google review
Copenhagen in the Spring is a nice, relatively quiet port with mostly the usual features of European / Scandinavian ports. The only unique attraction is The Little Mermaid statue, small but with it's own history of abductions, kidnapping and beheadings. If you're lucky your guide will give you the local story of the Little Mermaid which is more of a Danish Tragedy, so beware of little ears who are enchanted by the Disney version. It isn't magical but it's interesting lore. Here are a few other shots of the city as there are ample and better pictures of the Mermaid than I could get under the lighting conditions.

The Little Mermaid bronze statue, located in Copenhagen, sits on a granite rock, on the water side of langeline promenade. It is 4.1 ft tall and weighs 175 kgs. The Statue was based on the fairy tale of Hans Christian Anderson and was unveiled to the public in 1913. However, it has now become a target for defacement, due to uncaring attitude of some people, despite attracting those tourist and visitors, who are smitten fairy tale lovers, ofcourse that includes me. I loved her quiet gaze, an unassuming sureness of her existence to continue.
Neeru D — Google review
I visited the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen around dusk since it gets dark early this time of year. It wasn’t crowded, which made it easy to take pictures. There were no tickets or anything like that, you just walk up to it. The statue itself was nice to see in person, though it felt a bit simple to me. Still, it was a fun stop and worth seeing while in the city.
Grace W — Google review
it’s a very beautiful and symbolic statue as the sea wraps around it. around the mermaid there’s also a very nice park with amazing statues and church! there are a lot of people coming there for pictures so be prepared if you come in the afternoon!
Hamy N — Google review
Free activity - a little underwhelming to be honest, it’s also quite far out to the north of the city. If you on a tight schedule probably better to skip but if you have plenty of time & love the Hans Christian Andersen stories then pop past for a photo - there are actually some beautiful sights near the little mermaid which you can enjoy

The M/S Maritime Museum in Helsingor, Denmark offers a unique underground experience showcasing the history of Danish seafaring and trade. The modern building provides an intriguing setting for exhibits on this maritime heritage. Located on the northeast coast of Zealand, it stands opposite Helsingborg, Sweden. The museum is a must-visit destination for those interested in delving into Denmark's rich seafaring past.
The museum was very informative and attractive. For adults and for the kids it's for everyone who wants to learn something about Danish maritime history. The museum shop was weak if I compare it with the Viking museum in Roskilde. But overall I definitely recommend this museum. Actually just for this museum you can come to Helsingør.
Yunus D — Google review
Worth a trip to Denmark! It’s not only worth a detour to finish your Copenhagen pass, it could be the cornerstone of your entire trip; according to the Michelin rating, it’s the top note! The museum is set in a dry dock, adorning an incredible architecture. Very kids friendly, with a huge playing area that also instructs, it offers a story within the story with a clandestine mouse that the kids have to hunt for. As for the adults, the museum is multifaceted, showing history, WWII, the influence of shipping, but also stunning models and a mesmerizing photo exhibit of sunk boats and their treasures. Tank to the team, always smiling as they provide answers to the most obscure questions, and the generous donators that made this museum possible. The shop offers quality products designed or made in Denmark. If the cafe is closed, there is a huge indoor food trucks area nearby! There’s more than Hamlet in Helsingør!

It was our second visit to the museum, which underwent an excellent renovation during the winter of 2024–spring 2025. We continue to love the place, as do our kids. It’s a spot where you can learn a great deal about Denmark’s maritime history and spend hours admiring the many boat models. We highly recommend a visit and suggest planning to spend 2–3 hours there.

Impressive museum with a great shop selling quality merchandise. Well laid out with a qualiat the half way point. Every section of every hall has interesting artefacts, with everything fully explained on Dutch and English. Including the fractured skull of a sailor who fell from the mast of a tall ship.

This museum is so much fun, it deserves all 5/5 stars. Not 4.5, not 4.7, but a proper 5. The effect the museum had on us is that our new dreamjob is to design museums about on the surface boring subjects. Making ships this interesting, quite the accomplishment. It was very interactive, we learned a lot and we loved finding the hidden mice 🐭 (and we're grownups!) Discovered this museum thanks to the CPH card, and would recommend anyone to make a stop here, along with the castle right next to it. Great stuff!

Kronborg Castle

Castle
Museums
Kronborg Castle, also known as Hamlet's Castle, is a 16th-century Renaissance masterpiece located in Helsingor, Denmark. This UNESCO World Heritage site is famous for being the inspiration for Elsinore in Shakespeare's 'Hamlet.' The castle features baroque green-copper spires and is surrounded by moats and fortifications. Visitors can explore the inner palace's royal chambers, tapestries, ceiling paintings, and viewpoints.
Good: ✅ This is THE attraction in town. Beautiful property, castle, and engaging museum. ✅ Tailored visits. With a few hours on hand, pay admission and see it all. If short on time, walk the exteriors (amazing views) at no cost. Either journey is at your own pace. ✅ Well organized. There are sections of the castle with color-coded entrances from the main courtyard. A color-coded map is provided making it easy to make choices—see what you want. Caution: ❌ Obviously, a rainy day will alter the outdoor experience. However, for those paying admission, there is still so much to see inside. Summary: Aside from the adjacent cobblestone streets meandering through a charming cluster of shops and restaurants (an attraction on its own), the Kronborg Castle is the star attraction in town. An exploration will not disappoint.
Troy W — Google review
Kronborg Castle is one of the most impressive and atmospheric places I visited in Denmark. Overlooking the Øresund Strait, this UNESCO World Heritage site is not only visually stunning, but also packed with history and character. Known worldwide as “Hamlet’s Castle,” it fully lives up to its fame. The rooms and royal chambers are beautifully preserved, giving you a real sense of the grandeur of the Danish monarchy in the Renaissance era. But the highlight for me was exploring the dark, eerie casemates — the old military barracks beneath the castle. Walking through those damp, stone tunnels really brings the past to life. You can almost feel the presence of the soldiers who once took shelter there. And then there's Holger Danske, the legendary statue deep in the basement. According to Danish folklore, this mythical warrior sleeps under Kronborg Castle and will rise to defend Denmark in her time of need. Seeing the statue in the dim light down there added a magical, almost mythological touch to the whole experience. If you're into history, legends, or just want to explore a magnificent fortress with great views and an unforgettable atmosphere, Kronborg is absolutely worth the visit. Take your time — there’s a lot to discover.
Dmitry Z — Google review
Learned a lot about Danish history at Kronborg Castle — magnificent architecture and rich stories of kings and battles. The tower visit is absolutely worthwhile, offering stunning views over Helsingør and across to Sweden. A must-see for anyone interested in history, culture, and royal heritage.
Markus M — Google review
What an experience! One of the most interesting castle I have ever visited. There many things to see during your visit there make sure to be on time so you don't miss anything. The underneath area was very spooky and adventurous!
Andrew K — Google review
Visiting Kronborg Castle was such a wonderful way to start our week in Denmark; we went on a Monday (during shoulder season) and it set the tone beautifully for our week ahead. The castle is located in the quaint town of Helsingør, about 45 minutes by train from central Copenhagen. The ride is comfortable and scenic, and from the station it’s a short walk into town and up to the castle grounds. We paid about 145 DKK for adult entry, students 125 DKK, and children under 18 were free. Kronborg dates back to the early 1420s when a fortress first stood here; later in the 16th century King Frederick II transformed it into the grand Renaissance castle you see today. The setting is dramatic: right at the narrowest point of the Øresund Strait, looking across toward Sweden, which explains its historic importance. The connection to William Shakespeare’s Hamlet adds a layer of legend and story: this very site inspired the “Elsinore” of the play. “To be, or not to be” seems almost to float in the air when you walk the corridors. We spent a few hours exploring and I’m so glad we didn’t rush; We enjoyed the whole castle, then ventured down into the crypts beneath the castle which felt a bit eerie, then examined the great halls, ramparts, the chapel and the sweeping views over the water. There’s a nice café inside and the gift shop nearby is well worth a browse and I found some beautiful keepsakes to take home. The town of Helsingør is charming, with historic buildings, small cafés and the sea at its doorstep; combining lunch in the town centre with our castle visit made for a really nice day out of the city. One important note: accessibility is limited; the castle has many stairs and no elevator, so it’s not ideal for wheelchairs. Opening hours when we visited were Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 until 16:00 in the off-peak season; the castle is closed on Mondays. During spring and summer months the hours are extended and on major holidays special times apply, so it’s worth checking ahead. Summer weekends in particular can get busier; if you prefer quieter exploring aim for a weekday morning. If you’re in Copenhagen and craving a day trip with history, drama and stunning scenery, I highly recommend Kronborg Castle.

Few things you can say about Kronborg Castle other than incredible. There’s so much to see, experience, and learn here — the amount of history within these walls is astounding. The preservation work is truly impressive, allowing visitors to step back in time and appreciate this remarkable piece of Denmark’s heritage. I had an amazing time touring the castle and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

A magical place full of history! Kronborg Castle is truly impressive - elegant, mysterious, and full of stories. The view of the sea is breathtaking, and it's easy to imagine Shakespeare's Hamlet walking through the halls. Beautiful architecture, calm atmosphere, and great exhibitions. Just make sure to dress warmly - it can be quite windy there, even in spring!

When visiting Helsingor, don't miss out on the captivating Holger Danske castle. This historical site is a must-see for travelers interested in Danish folklore and history. It's a great opportunity to delve into the rich history of this iconic landmark while enjoying the picturesque surroundings of Helsingor.
Holger Danske castillo copado is it really cool sculpture that's down in the dungeons. It's nice and dark down there and it has feels like it would be a very bad place to be back in that time!

Did not expect this kind of experience, but really worth it! Make sure to bring a flashlight with you going down there.
Armmy P — Google review
The statue is imposing. The massive size of Oilger shows that if he were to stand, he'd easily be 10 feet tall, or more. His arms are thicker than my chubby little waist, if he wore jeans, my entire body would be swallowed in one leg. The detail is stunning. The ties on his sandals to the edges of his fingernails are clearly defined. This was worth the whole trip. Don't forget your Holger Danske souvenirs in the gift shop! All price ranges, 5 kroner and up. Postcards, notebooks, statues, posters, even snow globes. Totally cool, authentic drinking horns, even a Holger Danske Ale. The exhibit is so cool! Literally. Wear a sweater/sweatshirt if you run cold. Maybe bring a flashlight for uneven floors. We found a hole by falling in. We found another hole, that dropped down an entire level or more, but it was safely marked off with a barrier wall. We're allowed to look in it, to fall in that one is a deliberate act against common sense (because you'd have to literally climb a wall) The statue is at the start of the casement exhibit, but there's so much more to see on the way through. Watch your head space, low arches in ceiling in places. The stone stairs are so worn, you can see the hundreds of years of people using them. It's a thing that reminds a person how each step leaves an imprint, cumulative through time. A must see at Kronborg Castle. The low price of admission includes all three exhibits and the grounds. Tickets available in the gift shop.

A big sculpture of Holger Danske is located in the beginning of the Kronborg's casemates. This hero is sleeping while nothing threatens Denmark. In other case he will wake up and fight for his country. Very interesting to see it. Casemates themselves are a bit narrow and dark (think about this before going there). So you'll need to use a flashlight.

Sofiero Palace, situated in Helsingborg, Sweden, was once the summer residence of the Swedish royal family. The palace boasts beautiful gardens filled with seasonal flowers and is open for tours, allowing visitors to explore the rooms and halls where the royal family once lived. Originally built in 1864 by Crown Prince Oscar and his wife Sophia of Nassau, Sofiero has become a popular public attraction.
I have been here several times. In the summer the gardens are magnificent. My most recent visit was to Höstljus last night Nov 4 2024. it was my first time to this event and it was AWESOME. Beautiful display of lights accompanied with music as well as art. Kid friendly and educational. Something for everyone to enjoy. I highly recommend this event. If you attend, get a cup of the Italian hot chocolate it is good.

Gorgeous summer palace with well tended sprawling gardens. Dahlias and Rhododendrons galore. Some flower beds have been kept the same for decades. The interior is so colorful and whimsical with storytelling placards. Be sure to have lunch on the back terrace!

Definitely worth a visit! A lovely little castle with huge grounds. On the grounds there is a lot to see, both beautiful gardens and interesting rhododendron areas, as well as the sea.

Such a beautiful experience. Wonderful nature. It's a bit expensive to get in, but you don't go there often I guess. Check it out.

Unfortunately for us, we were too early for most of the spring blooms (the park was not officially open, and we didn't need to buy tickets), but it was not hard to see that it is a spectacular place when the flowers are out. There are even little "forests" for the kids to play in. We will be back at a better time, for sure. Well worth the little detour to visit. EDIT / UPDATE We returned later in the season and the grounds were lovely. Plenty of flowers out to enjoy and more importantly, the buildings were open to visit inside. The "castle" is lovely and I am so glad to have been able to see it. There was an art exhibit inside (it was only so-so), in addition to the historical exhibit (well worth the time to read). I think we will return for out third visit later in the fall when the leaves have turned colour. Bottom line: We made two trips from Oslo (14 hours total driving each time) to see this place and are planning a third trip, so I think it is very high on out list, based on our willingness to undertake such a long trip.

We went to the ”Höstljus” (autumn lights) show. The whole park (or most of it) was decked out with various lighting installations. It was an awesome experience, even though the price is rather steep. There were aldo coffee-carts and some smaller vendors. Overall, highly recommended.

Sights & Landmarks
Kärnan, the iconic medieval tower in Helsingborg, stands as a remarkable testament to the region's rich history. This impressive 35-meter structure is all that remains of a once-mighty fortress built in the early 14th century. After undergoing significant renovations, it has recently reopened its doors to visitors eager to climb its narrow stairs and soak in breathtaking views of Helsingborg and across the Oresund Strait to Helsingør, Denmark.
The tower was closed at Time when I was there, but it is a significant landmark even from outside. I definetly have to get back here one day, to see it from inside and top. The staircase to the tower was open, and it provided beautiful view to surrounding as well.

Kärnan stands as a significant historical landmark in Helsingborg. Situated atop a hill, this well-preserved medieval tower offers a commanding aerial vista of the city and the Öresund strait. For an even more elevated perspective, visitors can ascend the tower, where panoramic views unfold, showcasing the urban layout and the surrounding landscape. The grounds surrounding Kärnan feature a charming park, providing a pleasant environment to enjoy the scenery and appreciate the historical context of this notable site.

A wonderful castle visit is guaranteed here, but be warned there’s around 120 steps to climb to reach the top. The experience is quite simplistic, but very good value and incredibly educational. If your someone who things “a boring castle” this is not the normal experience and that makes it all the better.

This was an unexpected find for us when we visited Helsingborg. A lovely medieval tower in the middle of the city, right next to the Terrace Stairs (Terrasstrapporna), and the many restaurants below the stairs. We took about 30 minutes to tour the tower, then headed down the Stairs and had dinner. The Tower is well worth the short visit.

A single tower remaining from a medieval castle dating from the 1300s. Its prominence persists, with many people simply drawn to this impressive and curious structure.

If you’ve come to Helsingborg, I definitely recommend visiting it. The view is amazing.

A great site to visit, historical, clean and well preserved. An extraordinary panoramic view of the east coast of the city. A large green area around the top and next to the boulevard. By paying, you can enter inside the tower, everything else can be visited at any time.

Kärnan (The Core) in Helsingborg, Sweden, is an imposing medieval tower, the last remaining structure of a once-mighty castle. Its strategic location overlooking the Øresund Strait offers panoramic views of the city and the Danish coast. Climbing the narrow spiral staircase to the top is rewarded with a breathtaking vista. While the tower itself is relatively bare, the historical significance and the stunning views make it a worthwhile visit for history buffs and sightseers alike.

Wildlife refuge
Tropikariet, also known as the Tropical Zoo, is a unique indoor animal sanctuary located in Helsingborg. It offers visitors the opportunity to explore synthesized tropical environments inhabited by a diverse range of exotic animals from Africa, South America, and other regions. The zoo's carefully designed enclosures mimic natural habitats and allow for up-close encounters with creatures like lemurs, meerkats, pygmy marmosets, and various reptiles.
Worth a visit! I had no idea that so many animals were out of cages and moved freely around the rooms in the facility! We got to experience curios lemurs and some very daring small monkeys, bats, parrots - very cool! We had some fruit with us for the kids to snack on, which caused a lot of attention. We had everything hidden in the backpack but still they smelled it and didn’t leave our stroller alone. Nothing too excessive but was a little overwhelming for our 7 & 5 year olds who were worried for their baby brother. But there were no issues. In the basement we got to meet a tiny crocodile, and fish that love to eat dead skin off the fingers 😆 The place isn’t particularly big, so about 3 hours is enough. A little steep price-wise (220kr for a grownup), but I’d say it’s worth it. Free parking for 2,5h hours. There’s a cafe but we didn’t have the time. Elevators are available and it’s ok to move around with a stroller. Wasn’t too crowded either. Loved it, to sum it up.

Interactive zoo, meaning that the monkeys may decide to jump on your rucksack and play on your neck, a boa may decide to go on exploration on your arm or parrots may get nasty with you. Unfortunately, I could not get in touch with the bats so far. They only fly close by, but do not land on your head. A paradise for children!! The food is very healthy, rich of fibres and tasty.

It's super nice. It's more than a zoo. To full happiness of my son, the spiders should be outside their terrariums. I don't think other visitors would be so happy, though! There are not tons of animals. Aquariums are rather small, but it still makes a massive impression on kids, and perhaps adults too. I really recommend it.
Mateusz S — Google review
Loved it. Initially i thought it was a little overpriced but the second a lemur sat on me i felt it was totally worth it. Toiching the animals is not allowed and one needs to respect their space, however this rule only applies to humans, you can enter some of the areas or even hold your hand in some of the touch pools pools. Its very hard though to look at these cute faces and resist the urge to pet them. Very nice place.

a great little zoo-like place in the middle of the town. different stories to vistit with different themes and animals and fun exhibitions. a whole night floor, open, with bats, monkies and sugargliders roaming free. if you and or your kids like zoos, you absolutely should visit this place!

Amazing g experience for the kids with good aquatic animals. They loved the monkeys as well as all the small, wild animals. The snakes were scarely, but the most intriguing was the experience of having the fish eat your dead skin

Great small mini Zoo about the animals living in Madagascar and South America. Plus a beautiful shark aquarium in the basement.
Jacob N — Google review
The staff does a great job. All animals look healthy and happy. Recommend for all ages. There is plenty of parking and you can have some food here. There are places to park prams, but you can also walk around with them as there is an elevator. Remember to dress lightly because it's very warm inside. There is wardrobe room for jackets. Staff will let you pet some of the creatures. There is even fish tanks that you can dip your hand in. Plan to spend here max 3 hours.
