History museum
Museums
Outdoor museum showcasing old border fortifications between East & West Germany & military vehicles.
This was a very interesting museum tucked away in the hills. Some friends that live in Germany took me here and I was impressed by the displays of all the different machinery outside. Some nice examples of the helicopters and other machines used during this time period. And a lot of the information boards feature an English translation :) - visited on July 15, 2018
Wade W — Google review
Interesting museum portraying the time of the iron curtain. Various military vehicles from both sides exhibited. Several exhibits giving a photo account of the time. Pity most of the exhibits were in German. U get the overal picture but miss the details. A short summary would help. Never the less an impressive few hours soaking up history
Tracy E — Google review
An impressive and moving museum that vividly conveys the history of the German division. The exhibition is informative and well-organized, and the numerous exhibits provide deep insights into life at the border. The outdoor area, with original parts of the former border installations, is particularly striking. A visit that really touches you and makes you think. Highly recommended, highly important place!
Raphaela S — Google review
The border museum is well worth the visit. There is a lot to see and read. The lighting could be a bit better in some places but I think they have done a great job with what little resources they had. There is a new, larger reception and display building that has just been completed but which is not yet operational.
Keith F — Google review
Great museum for just €5. Free parking. No CC accepted. Museum consists of several sheds with lots of info and photo material. Outside helicopters and military vehicles and tanks on display. You can enter one of the old helicopters! The stories of those days that can be read with the photos leaves you speechless. New museum building is under construction.
Sander M — Google review
An interesting mostly open air museum and Cold War memorial. This place documents the brief and disturbing history of the inner German border under the DDR. The methods and physical barriers to keep a civilian population contained under the auspices of communism were eye-opening. Though maybe not as notorious as the Berlin Wall, the inner-border zone nevertheless highlights the danger of a government run amok and the ultimate futility of a failed political ideology. Also documented was the current state of the “green zone” and how the former death strip has been transformed into a protected area throughout Mittel Deutschland.
Nathan G — Google review
Learning the history of east and west Germany, also looking at the fence that was built along the border. The guides told the stories with very good explanation.
Rahmi A — Google review
Good experience, bunch of helicopters to look at and the guy at the reception is nice.

Very cheap. To go up costs 2.50€. To go up and down costs 4,00€ per person. It’s super fun. The view is amazing. Especially during the summer time the view is amazing with lots of nature around. Highly recommended. The alternative is to walk up, but if you aren’t a sports guy than that will be quiet intense to do so.

Nice town with a far sized pedestrian zone . Caught a Christmas market while there. The chair lift to the pub restaurant and walking/ Trecker paths on top of the hill for small money 4.50 € up the top and back down. Parking very reasonable in the town also.

Lovely short ride to a neat mountaintop restaurant. Unfortunately the staff on duty wouldn't speak English, so a girl had her leg pinced and the operator didn't realize it, didn't understand the girl talking and gesticulating and didn't help. Hope the poor girl figured on her own how to unstick her leg. Else the short ride might have been unbearably long for her.

The Gänseliesel fountain is located at the heart of the medieval town of Gottingen and features a replica of a famous statue depicting a girl with a goose. This landmark is widely recognized and represents the rich history and traditions of the city. The area surrounding it exudes charm and antiquity, attracting visitors who appreciate its beauty. Tourists will enjoy exploring this lovely town as it showcases Germany's cultural heritage and splendor while maintaining its cleanliness and orderliness.
Did you just get your PhD degree in Göttingen? Take you friends, colleagues, relatives, and go to give flowers to Gänseliesel, and don't forget to kiss her! Lovely tradition ;)

Gänseliesel, also referred to as "Goose Girl," is a historical fountain in Göttingen notable for the PhD graduates at the University of Göttingen who are required, as part of an old tradition in Göttingen, to go and kiss her as a token of their love on the day of graduation. Despite the fact that it was built in 1901, it has undergone minor restorations. Every time I visit the city center, I love to walk by this fountain.

So nice to just walk through this garden, it's full of life. I really enjoy it, probably a must see in Göttingen :)

Nice path for walking and running. If you do not have a special interest, it is however not super and is worth visiting only if you are nearby.
Lütfü C — Google review
You have to really really really like plants and flowers if you want to check out this place. Although it looks nice it is not worth the travel. Go if you are near the place for a short walk, drink or picknick. If not enjoy the pictures online :).
Bram K — Google review
A lovely place to walk through and see a variety of plants.
Henry M — Google review
This is a nice walk and you can see many different plant varieties and small ponds with fauna. Good view at the top of the hill takes about 40 minutes to do the whole place and really nice trees at the top that are very fragrant.
Francois N — Google review
A very serene environment with a soothing atmosphere. Mountainous scenery to behold. If you are in Göttingen and you have never being to this place then your Summer season must be relived. Anyways, had a walk here with a friend and fell in love with this environment. The best best place to connect with nature and God. Lemme know your experience. 👌💕😘😌
Michael D — Google review
A botanic garden near the University in the Weende side of town. A lake to see, some garden sections, an alpine style garden on the hill and some greenhouses which, I believe, are only open on specific tours or on specific days. Free entry to the rest of the park though. Worthy of a view if in the area, though not as good as the Botanic garden in town
Will P — Google review
I love this place, great for a short walk, to learn about plants, or just to sit down next to the pond and read a book. The sunsets seen from the Alpine_ecosystem area are amazing.

Gustav Adolf Stave Church

Evangelical church
Sights & Landmarks
Gustav Adolf Stave Church, located in the old spa resort of Hahnenklee, is a remarkable medieval-style wooden church dating back to 1908. This Nordic-style stave church was constructed from spruce trunks and boasts elaborate carvings, an impressive organ, and a unique four-octave carillon. The interior is as magnificent as its breathtaking exterior, offering visitors a peaceful and beautiful place to explore.
Really unusual to see one of these outside of Norway. Built on the Norwegian style, it's well worth a visit to admire the craftsmanship, and you won't see another unless you go to Norway. It only cost euros to get in, and that's well worth it too. Take your time inside, and soak up the atmosphere...
John B — Google review
I went there by taking M830 from Goslar Hbf. There is only one or two time each hour, and need to check the time in order not to wait for a long time. The church is very beautiful and attractive. Very impressive. It’s worth visiting. There is a hotel near the church is also quite beautiful.
Shirley X — Google review
This little church is seriously stunning! If you're into checking out the impressive woodworking skills that showcase the local architectural style, you're in for a treat. The folks running the place might not have been the friendliest, but we still had a good time during our quick visit.

Very beautiful church. The unique thing about this church that's it is made of wood. If you came here you should definitely go inside. The enter price is 2 euro, which is really affordable. Inside it's beautiful as well. Just sit in the church for a while, it's a very peaceful place

Fred N — Google review
Always love going here with the family. Breakfast, bath and sauna, ice cream. What's not to love?
John M — Google review
Lots of warm/hot water pools, all different temperatures and different salt levels. Outside lazy river, whirlpools and jacuzzis. Separate sauna area with different temperature sauna rooms. On site cafe/restaurants where you can eat/drink without having to get changed.
Vicci J — Google review
We visited this therme as tourists that don't speak fluent German. I tried to speak German to buy tickets at the counter and this went well. Unfortunately the lady at the counter didn't explain to us how to system of the tickets worked and we ended up having to pay extra at the end. I wish she would have told us about how things worked in there. The therme itself was nice but inside as a mixed couple we also felt stared at by other visitors. We left with mixed feelings about the 'fine' and the experience. It might be that the town isn't used to many tourists that don't speak good German but it was disappointing.
Toyah B — Google review
Clean, warm, and salty pools :) During weekend is crowded, but you can still enjoy it.
Masoud M — Google review
Spent three hours in this (mostly) indoor pool area. They have a selection of heated pools with salt water. Each pool is a different temperature with a different concentration of salt. They also have four jacuzzis and a textile-free sauna area. The restaurant sells good food for affordable prices. Entrance is a bit pricey depending on how long you want to stay. I would suggest coming early so you can relax a bit on their comfortable lounge chairs. The view from outside is also amazing.

(Translated by Google) A beautiful vantage point overlooking the Weser River near Beverungen. It's about a 500-meter walk from the parking lot, and it's a fairly steep downhill walk on gravel. This means the return trip is extremely uphill. You'll already be completely exhausted by the time you get to the parking lot. It's not recommended for wheelchair users. But the view makes up for everything. A fantastic view of the Weser River from a height of 80 meters. If you're in the area, I highly recommend checking out this attraction.

World Heritage Rammelsberg ore mines

Mentioned on

Museum
History museum
The World Heritage Rammelsberg ore mines, located in Goslar, is a significant attraction with a history dating back over 1000 years. The site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 1992. Visitors can explore the museum housed within the former silver mine, featuring exhibits on history and geology. Guided tours of the 18th-century shafts offer an immersive experience into the mining industry's past.
I had the train tour and the museum. The tour was just in German, but was done in a majestic way. The train is obviously the focal experience of the tour, but also how the life was underground and the tools used is explained wonderfully (also without knowing the language:)). The museum is in 3 buildings, the storage with the history is the main part, and the other 2 is more about the real machines. They all have English explanations.
Marco G — Google review
I took the train/ mine option and greatly enjoyed the ride and temperature change (it was hot outside). Although the tour was in German I was able to infer as it is a very visual and interactive tour. The tour guide was really good. Hard to believe what these workers had to go through to earn a living. Free parking nearby. Great tour,
D M — Google review
An amazing experience I would highly recommend! It's rare to get to walk in the shoes and take the same mine train the miners took back in the day, deep into the depths of this mine and UNESCO World Heritage site. The rest of the museum and exhibitions are also interesting but the mine rail tour is a must!
Aaron R — Google review
Exiting tour of the mines. Good museum part, but unfortunately most of it is in German.
Søren A — Google review
Very impressive! It was for me the first time to visit a mine like this, it feels you go back in time! The groups weren't that big, so you could see a lot of the mine. It was quite cold, so wear warm clothes. The train underground was an amazing experience!
Maud L — Google review
Very deceiving for such an emblematic place. It is still a quite impressive place full of history which is nice to see. I expected more... First of all, there is no tour in English. For a UNESCO world heritage site, you will expect at least one tour in English. For the museum part, it is interesting but everything is disorganised and it is not appealing. Some parts are only in German. I hope one day, this place would be made more accessible for non-german speakers.
___ A — Google review
Recommend booking in advance for English tours.
Colin L — Google review
I recently visited the Rammelsberg Ore Mines with my husband and had an incredible experience. We took the guided tour in English, called the Röder Stollen, led by Mr. Christian Etzrodt. He was super friendly and humorous, making the entire journey interesting and engaging. I really appreciate him going out of the way to add fun to the tour. It was an amazing and adventurous experience, and I highly recommend his tour. The reception staff were also very friendly and helpful (she helped us choose the appropriate tour), as was the lovely lady at the shop. Overall, it was a fantastic visit! We really enjoyed the experience. Oh, yes! Make sure to wear appropriate clothing and shoes. You would need to walk a lot and climb steep steps. Would not recommend this tour to people with claustrophobia, nyctophobia, panic disorder, breathing issues, pregnancy, etc. It is colder and dark and might be a bit slippery. P.S. I personally give bonus points for the "Stimmungsring" at the shop, haha

The Imperial Palace of Goslar is a remarkable 11th-century royal complex that served as the residence for German emperors during the Holy Roman Empire. This Romanesque-style palace is one of Germany's largest and best-preserved secular buildings from that era, earning UNESCO World Heritage status. Despite centuries of disrepair, it was reconstructed in 1879 and remains an impressive structure.

The Imperial Palace of Goslar is a remarkable medieval site with a rich history dating back to the 11th century. Inside, the museum showcases artifacts that highlight the Holy Roman Empire’s influence. The Royal Chamber stands out with its beautiful frescoes and impressive medieval décor. From the palace windows, you get a picturesque view of Goslar’s old town, blending history with charming landscapes. While some parts feel a bit worn, the overall experience offers a genuine glimpse into Germany’s imperial past.

Market Square in Goslar is a charming and historic town square surrounded by well-preserved buildings, creating a folksy atmosphere. At the heart of the Old Town, the Market Fountain stands as a testament to centuries of history, with its lower bronze basin dating back to the 12th century. The square also features notable landmarks such as the Gothic town hall from the 15th century and the impressive Huldigungssaal.
Absolutely loved this square and the associated atmosphere. Gorgeous buildings and the glockenspiel at 9am is quite cute and entertaining. This town is gorgeous and is an absolute must if in the area.

It's an old market square in Goslar, surrounded by old and impressive buildings, some of which are clad in ornate slatework. There are several cafes and food outlets in the square and nearby, and I'd guess that it gets very busy at times. A good place to take a break, before moving on.

A town that has been true to the History of Germany. I has been preserved in the age old fashioned and should be visited should you wish to see how Germany centuries ago used to look. During the winter is an amazing Winter Market that is truly warm and inviting even when the weather is not. There is a mine close to Goslar that is a few centuries old that offers tours into the depths of the mountains for those brave enough to go underground. There are many shops, restaurants and hotels so plan to spend some time in this beautiful little town for a truly German experience.

On a motorbike tour through Europe, we purposely aimed for this museum because of the bikes. The collection is massive, but what we didn't appreciate was that it is spread acorss multiple sites in the same town - spread out across the space of a mile or so (probably our mistake). We went to the main venue and enjoyed the exhibits, but these were a mix of cars and bikes. Only at the end did we find that the bike museum was a mile away and that we had to pay separately for admission to that venue. If we had known this, we would have gone straight to the bike venue, and saved some money. By the time we got to the bike venue to explore, we were already running behind schedule and were tired, so couldn't give the place the attention it deserved. Overall, the collection was huge, and comprehensive. I'd visit again, but pick the venue more carefully next time.

Great experience for "engine" lovers or those who wanna know more about the engine evolution, about cars, motorcycles and their trands throughout the history. Spectacular life scenes that outline the use of specific vehicles at the time of their grandiose and lots of many other interesting and beautiful things of the past.

OMG!!! Five stars is not enough. . Was the event of the oldtimer car rally. What a well organized event. It was the best car event for me since I have come to Deutschland. The staff was friendly and helpful the Facility was 10 out of 10!! I will go again just to spend time in the museum. Time was a bit short but gives me all the more reason to go back! A MUST DO!! The place is well kept, with a nice piece of wall art outside in theme with the car subject . The main building is packed full of all the items that made history in the locomotion area, 6 floors! Please allow many hours to this visit, or you Won' t have time for the special features available on the premises, as it happened to us! My 3 men were so taken by the stuff and the exhibition that 3 hours passed quickly, and were not enough! Pity that not all info is in english too, but there is enough to understand the period they are talking about..Restaurant is good, with friendly, english speaking personnel, and a refined industrial mood.

UNESCO-Welterbe Fagus-Werk

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Modernist factory built in 1911 & designed by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius & Adolf Meyer.
Fagus-Werk in Alfeld is a fascinating place to explore ,both for its history and unique architecture. The museum is located inside a five-story building where each floor offers a glimpse into different aspects of design, production, and the legacy of this still-active factory. You start your visit from the entrance on Hannoversche Straße, where visitor cards are provided. A must-see for anyone interested in industrial heritage or modern architecture.
Abbas G — Google review
I was left a bit disappointed by my visit. There is too much content in the museum (over 5 floors), and I would say the story could be curated better. It felt like a lot was repeated across different information boards, display cabinets and videos. There is also the UNESCO welcome centre, which seemed a bit pointless to me. The audio guide tour of the campus was okay, but again, it sort of repeats what is inside the museum, so of limited interest. I was told there are a few buildings I could go inside during my weekday visit, but it was pretty unclear on the ground. Given it’s still an active workplace, I decided not to just start opening random doors. The canteen also stops serving food a while before closing time. Saying all of this, the buildings remain stunning. I’m glad I finally visited them, but I hope they refresh the exhibition in the coming years.
Marques — Google review
The Fagus factory in Alfeld earned its UNESCO cultural heritage site status as a trailblazing work of modernist architecture and the first major commission of Walter Gropius, founder of Bauhaus. The shoe factory also has a notorious connection with inhumane shoe-testing experiments conducted on prisoners at Sachsenhausen. The museum unfortunately concentrates on shoe production. There is not enough context to illuminate the importance of Gropius’ work here, and there’s a shortage of Bauhaus-related material. The NS era is treated very cursorily. Instead there are whole rooms filled with group photos of factory employees or about trees and forests. Despite these shortcomings, the museum is interesting and well worth a visit.
Richard A — Google review
The visit of the exterior of the factory is highly recommended for its Bauhaus architecture. The site also offer the possibly to access an exhibition space explaining the industry which Fagus is dedicated to. However, don’t bother spending a ticket for the exhibition if you don’t speak German: scarce explanations are provided in English
Mathieu P — Google review
Admission without tour is currently 7 euros, with tour 12. Without the tour you cannot go inside the factory. Still, the museum is very interesting, and the cafe is great. Plan at least two hours without the tour. There's a market in Alfeld on Saturdays so make it a day trip.

The Meeting of the MODEUROP Colour Club for the Spring Summer 2019 season was held here at this UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Historical building and a wonderful museum. Important place for the Shoe Industry as the Shoe Lasts are manufactured here.
Md S — Google review
Built from 1911 to designs by Adolf Meyer and Walter Gropius, the subsequent star architect of the Bauhaus school, the Fagus Factory is widely regarded as the first truly modernist structure. Typical of the Neues Bauen style, the glass and steel facade and the huge, wrap-around corner windows free of supports lend the building an elegant feeling of lightness.

Brunswick Palace, also known as Braunschweiger Schloss or Braunschweiger Residenzschloss, has a rich history dating back to the 18th century when it served as the residence for the Dukes of Brunswick. Despite facing destruction and demolition over the years, it was rebuilt in 2007 and now houses a museum and rooftop terrace. The palace stands as a grand monument in Brunswick's schlossplatz and is admired for its stunning architecture.
It was a wonderful visit, as it is located in the city center, and it was the residence of the dukes from 1753 to November 8, 1918.. Within it is the Schloss commercial complex, which contains a wide range of shops such as clothing, food, restaurants, electronics, cosmetics, and perfumes... It is wonderful. If you visit the city of Braunschweig, do not forget to go there and take souvenir photos
Ahmad H — Google review
Stunning City Palace with a remarkable history. The old home of the Dukes of Braunschweig, the last of whom abdicated in 1918, the Schloss was destroyed twice, first by fire and then of course in the bombing raids of the Second World War. Against massive protests it was demolished in the 1960s and finally rebuilt in the 2000s to cover a shopping mall. You can easily spot the parts that came from the original Schloss. The architecture is beautiful and the site is in the centre of the city so absolutely a must visit when in Braunschweig. There’s a small museum in the left hand wing of the palace that is free, as well as the lifts to see the Quadriga at the very top that’s also free for the time being. The entrance is just to the right of the main entrance.

In Brunswick's schlossplatz stands the stunning building known as Brunswick Palace. When I passed by this majestic monument on the route to Gaussberg Park, I must admit that it was awe-inspiring. Only when I travel to the UK do I see monuments like this. According to what I was told, this palace was constructed sometime in the 18th century and underwent a number of renovations over its existence. I have heard that it once served as a residence for the Brunswick dukes in the 18th century. Wonderful to pass past this building.

Brunswick Cathedral, also known as St. Blasius Cathedral, is a remarkable 12th-century Romanesque architectural gem located in Braunschweig, Germany. Founded by Henry the Lion in 1173 and serving as his final resting place, the cathedral boasts distinctive twin towers and holds significant historical importance in the region's religious and cultural heritage.

Braunschweig Cathedral is a truly extraordinary place that left a profound impact on me. From the moment I stepped inside, I was transported to a bygone era, overwhelmed by the weight of history that permeates every corner of this majestic structure. The cathedral's architecture is a testament to human creativity and skill. Its soaring spires and intricate details are a sight to behold. The craftsmanship on display is nothing short of remarkable, with each delicate carving and carefully placed stone revealing the dedication and talent of the artisans who brought this architectural masterpiece to life. Every turn brought new surprises, and I found myself lost in admiration, marveling at the sheer grandeur of it all. However, the cathedral's beauty extends far beyond its physical appearance. Its walls reverberate with stories of centuries past, and the sense of timelessness is palpable. It has witnessed historical events, joyous celebrations, and solemn moments of reflection. As I learned about its rich history, I couldn't help but feel a deep reverence for the generations that came before us and the cultural heritage they left behind. Inside the cathedral, I encountered a collection of special sculptures that added an extra layer of fascination. These sculptures, meticulously crafted with exquisite detail, seemed to possess a life of their own. Their expressive forms and captivating presence drew me in, and I was captivated by the stories they told. Each one was a testament to the artistic prowess of the past, reminding me of the power of human creativity and the ability to transform stone into something truly extraordinary. In conclusion, Braunschweig Cathedral is more than just a building. It is a gateway to the past, an architectural wonder, and a repository of history and art. Visiting this remarkable cathedral is an immersive experience that will transport you to ancient times and leave you with a deep appreciation for the enduring legacy of our ancestors. Prepare to be enchanted by its timeless beauty, to marvel at its architectural splendor, and to be moved by the stories it silently whispers.

A long overdue piece , I visited this absolutely beautiful cathedral in April, it was a cloudy morning and I was incidentally in time for Ms.Monika's famed church tour (it was around 11 am ) , and boy was i was amazed. She breathed and lived the cathedral's rich history, dark times and the subsequent restoration. Her impeccable attention to detail and careful explanation bought the cathedral to life. A proficient bi -lingual (German and English) , she did an outstanding job to weave the narrative of the journey of the cathedral from past to present. The tour itself is about an hour and free , the cathedral has stood the test of time and is a testament to faith, history and changing times of the surrounding regions. The architecture (gothic- renaissance) is a splendid remainder of the rich history and cultural heritage of the city itself. The staff and local agencies involved are doing a wonderful job of preserving this splendid piece of architecture, if Braunschweig is not on your radar, give it a try, gems like these won't dissapoint you.

St. Mary's Cathedral, a stunning example of Romanesque architecture, is a must-see for anyone visiting Hildesheim. This historic cathedral boasts world-renowned bronze artworks and an ancient rose that has stood the test of time. Although it suffered significant damage during World War II, it underwent restoration in the 1950s and again recently, reopening its doors in 2014 as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside St. Michael's Church.

Mila K — Google review
Yes, difficult to review this one. The thought that it was being built 800 AD is fascinating. The restorations are hmmm. I would prefer benches, really. During my visit, they started to play classical baroque music. As much as I love classical music, it has no place in a Catholic Church, also it’s distracting while praying a rosary, there should be not played modern instruments. I really appreciate their talent, but everything has the right time and place, and a Catholic Church is not the same as a Protestant church, the catechism is clear about newer instruments inside the church. Well, but some corners are really beautiful here, even though I am not getting on good terms with the artstyle of the statues, the bigger heads are a bit irritating when used of normal sized statues. A huge old Cathedral with few content, I know small parishes with more art, thought, some of the figures are normal sized, they look really good, and the paintings with baroque-ish decoration were fascinating me as well. Benches would make a huge difference, really.

St. Michael's Church, located in Hildesheim, Germany, is a remarkable example of 11th-century Romanesque architecture and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church is renowned for its exquisite bronze doors crafted by Bishop Bernward and features a painted wood ceiling depicting the genealogy of Christ. The interior is bathed in natural light from all angles, enhancing the beauty of the structure.
Even if you're not Christian or not religious at all, you can't help but be in awe of the history places like these hold. And even more, of the architects and especially the workers who have created these buildings without modern technology. And it's still here. The city of Hildesheim luckily left some space around it, so that you can really enjoy and appreciate it in all it's beauty. Highly recommended if this is what you're interested in.

From the moment I walked through the doors, I felt a genuine sense of welcome and community. The atmosphere is both peaceful and uplifting, making it a place where anyone can feel at home. The worship is heartfelt and sincere, blending tradition with a sense of relevance that speaks to all generations. Grand traditional town hall building and landmark, still in use for the local mayoral offices. You can enter for free since its public government, you'll only need to pay for the special elevator ride to the tower platform that's boasting a great aerial view over the whole city of Hanover and surrounding area. The elevator is special since it's following the somewhat crookedly-built silhouette of the old building. It was designed like that instead of destroying big historical sections of the edifice internally.

Hanover's Old Town is a beautiful area to wander around on foot, and one of its landmarks is the Leineschloss palace, which was redesigned in neoclassical style between 1817 and 1842. This former royal residence of Duke George von Calenberg is now the home of Lower Saxony's parliament.
The Leineschloss (English: Leine Palace), situated on the Leine in Hanover, Germany, is the former residence of the Hanoverian dukes, electors and kings. Currently it is the seat of the Landtag of Lower Saxony. The first building on the site was a Franciscan friary, constructed in about 1300, which was abandoned in 1533 after the Protestant Reformation. In 1636, George, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, began construction of a rather small late renaissance palace on the site as his residence. Elector Ernest Augustus had it enlarged and modernized and added a theatre in the late 17th century. In 1742 the north-west wing was renewed. Between 1816 and 1844, the architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves fully re-built the palace. The column portico with six Corinthian columns was built during this period. During World War II, the Leineschloss burnt out entirely after British aerial bombings. King George I of Great Britain was originally buried in the Chapel of the Leineschloss, but his remains, along with his parents', were moved to the 19th-century mausoleum of King Ernest Augustus in the Berggarten of Herrenhausen Palace after World War II. Architect Dieter Oesterlen re-built the palace between 1957 and 1962. In August 2016 bones were found in the Leineschloss during a renovation project; it was believed that the bones were the remains of Philip Christoph von Königsmarck, the lover of the wife of the later king George I of Great Britain who was killed there in July, 1694. However, subsequent tests proved that some of the bones were from animals, while the human bones came from at least five different skeletons. None have been proven to belong to Königsmarck.

Erlebnis-Zoo Hannover is a spectacular animal park in Germany, attracting over a million visitors annually. The zoo features more than 2,000 residents from 5 continents, housed in unique and carefully designed habitats such as the Sambesi river ride, Indian jungle palace, Gorilla Mountain, Meyers Hof farmyard, Mullewapp children's paradise by Helme Heine and the Canadian landscape Yukon Bay.
Visiting from Canada and brought my 3 kids here aged 3 to 7. The whole family had an amazing time. Well thought out exhibits, loved seeing so many different animals up close and personal. Will always remember our visit to this zoo. Should have gotten tickets online sooner as they were cheaper, and can attend for free on your birthday!

Pretty good. But seeing someone smoking in the kids playground was shocking to me. Really good work with the themed atmosphere and building structures. Animals hiding in the shade but most still visible.
Arunas B — Google review
My first time here and I absolutely loved it. I honestly didn’t expect much from a zoo in Germany, but this one went far beyond my expectations. It feels more like an amusement park somehow! The boat ride is my favorite part, since some of the animals can be seen better from the boat. And don’t miss the zoo shop. They have so many cute merch items. Definitely one of the best zoos I’ve ever been to.
Noey T — Google review
All the animals looked so happy! The enclosures are just so amazing! Really good job making them themed after the area you’d find the animals in the wild, which just made it look so natural and made it look so that the animals were at home! Not seen anything like this before! The entry fee is at the higher end but it’s so worth it! Loved all of it!

15 out of 10 for theming, one of my favorite in the world! Beautiful areas and though they’re building new areas, spaces are original, more like a theme park and according to the animals. Loved the Yukon! Easy to navigate but plenty of signage, maps and ways to find your way. Worth a visit!

A beautifully themed zoo. Great for spending the whole day with the family. There are several places inside the zoo where you can eat well.

Park
Herrenhäuser Gärten is a grand 17th-century garden complex featuring Europe's tallest fountain and an open-air theater. The Herrenhausen Palace Museum, located within the gardens, showcases baroque treasures and significant figures from Hanover's history. Divided into east and west wings, the museum provides insights into the garden's history and its role in Baroque culture. Inspired by Versailles, these gardens offer a serene escape from urban life.
I visited the Herrenhausen Gardens in Hanover with my husband one evening, and it was a really lovely experience. The main garden is big and very well kept, with neat paths, fountains, and beautiful flowers. There’s also a nice botanical garden with many different plants and greenhouses. We especially liked the colorful grotto and the peaceful atmosphere. It’s a great place to relax, take a walk, and enjoy nature.
Vandana B — Google review
The famous Herrenhäuser Gärten are a great example of a classic garden in the French style. It was preserved in part due to the neglect by the kings of England after the electors of Hanover had ascended to the British thrown. Features include the great fontaine and as a more recent addition a grotto designed by Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002). The castle was rebuilt after being destroyed in the war. Another more recent addition is the Jacobsen Pavilion designed by Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971).
Nils P — Google review
Good gardens but 10 Euros for the ticket is way too much. The complex looks great, but is fairly repetitive so might become boring after a while. The exposition in the palace itself is purely symbolic and takes maybe 10-15 mins. Overall resembles Schlosspark Charlottenburg in Berlin, but more manicured and boring, so less appealing for regular visits. And also the latter is free, contrary to this one. The staff members vary from nice and helpful to grumpy and changing their expressions at the moment they see a foreign face (the lady selling souvenirs was exactly like this). And I'll repeat it, maybe someone should steal less from the city budget and make it free or at least somehow cheaper.
Aleksey R — Google review
Great baroque park, beautifully designed and very well maintained. The ticket includes the grand palace garden (Großer Garten) as well as the inside palace museum and botanical garden (Berggarten) just opposite side north of the palace. They're all worth visiting, so better take at least 3 hours time for them.

It was simply beautiful. A great place to either take a walk or go on a date or meet with friends or also alone. I was there for a concert but found the place breathtaking. A place to visit for anyone who happens to visit hannover.

Wonderful baroque gardens of world renown, or stroll the English landscape gardens nearby or the wonder hill garden, the former vegetable garden, now turned botanical garden. Just won a competition

I had a wonderful time at Sea Life Hannover! The aquarium is beautifully designed and offers a fascinating journey through marine life. From colorful tropical fish to majestic sharks, there's so much to see and learn. The staff were friendly and informative, and everything was very well maintained. It’s a perfect place for families, kids, or anyone who loves the ocean. Highly recommended!

The enrty fee was 22€ /adult, not worth.. soo small compared to the price... The interactive booklet with the stapm collecting was fun, you get 5 stickers at the end if you collect all.

It was great time. There is a lot of exotic animals. I was there with my girlfriend and the only thing that surprised me was that we was going slowly and even that we finished all in 1 hour. I was sure we will spend there 2-3 hours

Had A Average Experience in the Sea Life.A lot of Sections were partially Closed ,cause of renovation. If you are interested in visiting this in 2025 , i would suggest to visit the bigger ones. From the Photos i was too excited to see them but it turned out to be small.

We were three adults with nothing to do while it’s raining, so we went to sea life! We really liked it but it was a bit short. The tunnel aquarium was a bit crowded but that’s to be expected and not that much of an issue. The variety is good with lots of information and fun facts.

Beautiful aquarium, though rather small. The tropical forest section is a nice addition.

The Evangelisch-lutherische Stadtkirche St. Marien in Celle is a 700-year-old Protestant-Lutheran town church that has been a spiritual center for the community throughout generations. The interior of the church boasts stunning art from the late Renaissance to the Baroque period, including Gothic pillars, a beautifully designed pulpit by Danish artists, and intricately crafted organs.
This is a beautiful Church with a gorgeous interior

Tripped over this on an accidental visit to Celle. Just stuck our nose in the door and we were so impressed with such a unique church. In fact, we would put Celle above Hannover and Hamburg in terms of enjoyable tourist visits in the region. A pretty and relaxing town.
Ian S — Google review
The Church of St. Mary in Celle is certainly one of the most spectacular Protestant churches in Germany. The vivid baroque stucco work by Italian master Giovanni Tornielle is a rare example of the North German baroque, and interesting for its almost Renaissance-like execution and the absence of a central object or clear direction, such as a fresco. Also worth visiting is the much earlier-composed high altar from 1615 with its transitional style and the extravagant baroque epitaphs of the House of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. Make sure to climb the tower and see the remarkable Renaissance planned-city of Celle from above.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Celle Castle, originally built in 1292, is a Renaissance castle with medieval origins and is a must-see attraction in the city. The quadrangular building features immaculately preserved Baroque-style rooms and stunning Renaissance architecture. It also houses the oldest Baroque theater in Europe and a highly decorated chapel. Although guided tours were not available during the visit due to Covid restrictions, visitors can still admire the castle's beauty and history.
We didn't go in but sat in the gardens in front of the castle. It's nicely situated in the center of town. There was a vintage car fair when we were there and the atmosphere was really nice.

The castle impresses with its beautiful Renaissance architecture and well-maintained interiors. Inside, the museum offers a detailed look at regional history with modern exhibition techniques and clear descriptions. Interesting fact: During World War II, Celler Schloss was used as a refuge for artworks from major museums to protect them from bombings, adding a unique historical layer to its story.
Mousa M — Google review
Hundreds of years of history preserved in the old town. A renovated castle with the oldest theater stage in Europe.
Ventins007 — Google review
We did a guided tour. She was amazing and explained everything really well. Enjoyed the parts we could see. She said that the chapel won’t be accessible starting on December until March due to reparations so take into consideration.
