Punta Cirica o Cozzo Ciriga

Outdoor Activities
Punta Cirica o Cozzo Ciriga is a hidden gem near Ispica, offering a pristine marine paradise with sandy bays, cliffs, and natural caves. The small shingle beach is protected by wave barriers and surrounded by dramatic caves and sea arches. Visitors can relax in the shallow and clear waters or take a leisurely walk along the cliff to admire the stunning landscape.
We were lucky to be the only ones there when we found the caves! The access to the beach is a bit hidden, but once we found the way to the caves we enjoyed the beauty of these creations made by nature. Clear water, beautiful caves and nice view from above as well.
DarDar — Google review
Beautiful beach, warm and cool shallow sea that's great for kids. Mellow vibe compared to the rest of Sicily's beaches. Awesome caves to snorkel around and wade through. Not over crowded because it's a little hard to get access to. Park on the road or in the car park for free and walk 5 mins though the rocky shrubland. Very hot, not many deck chairs or parasols to rent so bring a parasol and avoid weekends when the locals go. Worth the exploration. One of the best beaches I've been to.
Sean G — Google review
My quote is: people make the difference, unfortunately nature cannot choose who welcome or refuse.. Wonderful place, hoping it will be keep as God made it.
Valentina M — Google review
Stunning beach with beautiful bays and clear water. You can wade out to the bays from the sandy beach 10 minutes from Santa Maria del Focallo. It's a good idea to wear water- proof shoes as some areas are a bit ricky underwater. The water is knee-deep in places.
Sarah H — Google review
Nice beach and cool caves to discover. Yet difficult to find parking. Bring drinks and foods as there isn’t much nearby.
Derek H — Google review
Gotta love these Hidden gems! Definately worth the stop if you're driving by.
Benjamin S — Google review
It is really beautiful place but I didn't like the idea of these artificial wave barriers that keeps this place from changing. It is both stupid thought to guard a beautiful random creation of nature by blocking the activity that caused it, and it causes bad smell from the water as well. I recommend to go this place, just saying that it's more a beautiful eyesight than a nice place to be in
Aviv K — Google review
The beach and the caves around it are a real beauty. But as many beautiful things, it's ruined by the guests: garbage left everywhere, plastic bags in the water and cigarettes left all around in the sand, people playing disco music loud and feasting with wagons of food. Tl;dr: nature is beautiful. People excel at ruining it.

Necropolis of Pantalica

Nature & Parks
Necropolis of Pantalica is an ancient archaeological site located in the Iblei mountains near Sortino and Ferla in Sicily. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features around 5,000 burial chambers dating back to the 13th to 7th centuries BC.
This is a vast and extraordinary site. There are two main trails: one leading through the necropolis and another following the Anapo River. We only explored the necropolis path, as both routes are quite extensive. The views are stunning. You can get remarkably close to some of the tombs, and contemplating how ancient they are is truly mind-blowing. It’s hard to fathom how the ancient Iblei managed to carve these tombs so high up into the rock faces. Absolutely astonishing. Be aware that the trail isn’t particularly family- or kid-friendly. It’s long, rocky, with high steps, mostly without shade, and can get very hot during the summer. I’d categorize it as moderate to difficult. However, it’s absolutely worth it—you won’t find many sites from the Bronze Age that are this expansive and well-preserved.
Andrea O — Google review
The location is good and interesting, the scenery is great. But you have to figure out some things on your own. First, you can't go into the area by car anymore. At the entrance you have to leave the car (free parking, not too spacious), register your name with the ranger and take a free shuttle bus that keeps going up to the end of the road to the Necropolis North and then back to the entrance. They will pick you up on the way. So far so good. Wish someone had told me in this clarity because the map they give you is useless, but you can go either 1 km by the shuttle to the start of the walking trail and the walk a few km to the end point, or do it the other way round. From the end point you can go down the river and up the other side or simply go back. There are many signposts along the way. Unfortunately, there are no maps showing you exactly where you are. I saw some confusion along the trail. Just bring enough water when it's hot cause you walk a lot and going this and that direction adds up. As long as you end up on either end of the road, you're fine. And it's all free of charge. If organization and information was better, I would have give 5 stars. But it's Sicily after all.
Albert K — Google review
Quite the adventure finding the right paths, definitely recommend downloading Komoot to not get lost. Other than that absolutely beautiful, amazing experience, it really feels like a mystic place, has some Pandora vibes and the guys at the ranger station are extremely friendly.
Nick D — Google review
Lovely valley - great views - perfect escape into nature. I would be cautious when it's raining, the stone in the valley tends to be quite slippery. The official parking was on one side of the road just before the entrance, it was free. Bring enough water!!!
N R — Google review
Amazing walk around the valley with more than 3000 years of history. We did a tour of 6km, which took us almost two hours.
Martin B — Google review
Incredible place - very beautiful for a hike!!! A must visit for anyone who likes nature / adventure / hiking / history! Parking wise there was no car park but we just parked near the info point entrance having drive in from Sortino direction. Was easy enough to just park at side of road which goes to a dead end at the entrance. The chaps at the entrance info point were friendly and helpful.
Adam R — Google review
Hot in June/July but such a special experience. Worth going out of your way for if you’re a hiking and/or history buff.
Sarah H — Google review
If some moderate hiking and ancient history is your thing (and you have a car or bike), definitely make time for this place when near Syracusa. The scenery is stunning, the burial sites look like they were carved out of the rock yesterday, and you will have a cool place to splash around when you get down to the river. Entrance is free, you just have to register in the book. Bring water. Much of the hiking is exposed with only limited shade. Easily in my top 10 of outdoor things to do in Sicily.

Spooky place. Great beach and dunes nearby. One of the places of Montalbano
Matti — Google review
The Penna Furnace was built between 1909 and 1912. The site of "Punta Pisciotto" was chosen for several reasons: the sufficiently deep seabed for ship docking, the presence of a nearby railway, a clay quarry about 200 meters away for raw materials, and ample water availability from a local karstic spring. The facility produced bricks, exported to many Mediterranean countries. Operations ran from sunrise to dusk, May to September, and ceased with the onset of rain. The furnace's activity ceased on the night of January 26, 1924, due to an arson that destroyed it within hours. A discarded letter attributed the act to socialists.
Maurizio M — Google review
An interesting piece of industrial heritage overlooking some splendid sea views. A must visit for all Montalbano fans as it was filmed as the notorious 'mannara'.

Let's start from the premise that I do not like doing these sort of activities - hence saying that I enjoyed it is no overstatement but rather a confirmation of how much fun one can have at this park. It's very well organised, very well kept and safe also. One thing However - the person who explained how things work should dedicate more time to novices like me rather than a brief 2 minutes and a good luck. Hence my only advice would be - please prepare rookies better

Donnafugata Castle is an impressive estate that has been converted into a museum, showcasing period furnishings and clothing. Visitors can explore a stone maze on the grounds before enjoying a meal at one of the castle's restaurants or picnicking in the gardens.
Spent over 3-hours exploring. The castle and garden grounds were very organized. Inside was amazing with historical information and items. I enjoyed reading about the Baron and how he would joke around. Many structures, indoor features and items were placed or constructed because of his sense of humor. It was fantastic.

A visit to Castello di Donnafugata in Ragusa is truly a magical experience. I highly recommend purchasing the full package, as it allows you to enjoy every part of this unique site. The Costume Hall is a real highlight, showcasing a fascinating collection of costumes from different eras – a journey through history brought to life with elegance and detail. The castle itself is beautifully preserved, giving you a glimpse into its grandeur and the stories hidden within its walls. Stepping outside, the gardens are simply outstanding. Take your time to explore the lush greenery, the charming pathways, and the grand terrace, which offers magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. A must-try activity is the labyrinth in the garden – fun, a little mysterious, and perfect for both adults and children. From history and culture to nature and play, Castello di Donnafugata offers it all. A place where the past meets beauty, making it an unforgettable stop in Ragusa. 🌿🏰✨

Absolute must see. Beautiful costume museum and 29 well furnished rooms to get a sense how Sicilian nobles lived. Charming garden with a labyrinth.
Malik S — Google review
A great experience! I recommend this castle. For a small fee, you are busy for at least 3 hours. A very interesting & informative costume display, a big tour inside the castle rooms with very detailed info panels that guide you and a very nice and big garden to wander in. The garden especially is very attractive and entertaining. Access is given even to the labyrinth of the castle. I hope they will start working on upkeeping/restoring the rooms in the castle to prevent more decay, it would be a pity otherwise.
Diana F — Google review
So interesting history and so many things to do there. It was definitely one of the highlights for our trip. You pay only 4€ to go inside the castle and another 3€ to go at the gardens and higher at the tower. For me it's a must visit place!
Lia F — Google review
Wonderful place where you can easily spend the whole day, especially if you have kids. Both the neo-gothical castle and the surrounding areas offer various activities and things to see and learn. Part of the ground floor of the castle is dedicated to a fashion exposition that has many original historic garments and dresses on display. Its well worth visiting if only from the historical perspective. The self-guided tour of the castle itself will take you through many different rooms containing various pieces of vintage furniture and decorations. Some of the rooms are nicely restored, but some are in dire need of maintenance. Afterwards, we were directed to visit the vast castle gardens, which are beautiful and well maintained and feature interesting structures, like the intricate labyrinth. In addition, a small cafe/souvenir shop is located directly in the castle, while a couple of restaurants and a gelateria can be found just at the entrance to the castle. However, we didn't visit either of them. There is also a small cattle farm and even a tiny playground behind the restaurants. If arriving by car, you can park for free on the access road, but you stand a better chance to park on the paid parking for €2.50/day per vehicle. Overall, we enjoyed the visit to the Donnafugata cadtle and definitely recommend this place if you are in the area.
Andrej M — Google review
A fantastic Castello of history and also the Meseo of Costumes was such a great insite to what was worn dating back many hundreds of years. Very original furniture which was a pleasure to see first hand. The massive gardens that surrounded the Castello was great too

Kamarina Archaeological Site and Museum

Museum
Specialty Museums
The archaeological area and regional museum of Kamarina is a small but well-maintained museum situated in a captivating location. Despite its charm, one drawback is that it is not easily detected by navigational systems. To avoid wasting time searching for the place in vain, it is advisable to set the nearby Club Mediterranee of Kamarina as the navigator's destination, which is only a few hundred meters away from the site.
This place is a tribute to the sheer dedication of the archaeologist who put it all together. He's clearly passionate on his subject and has put together the biggest collection in Europe The location is in an outstandingly beautiful position overlooking the sea with interesting walkways around. It is definitely worth the visit

(Translated by Google) Very nice museum. It contains a beautiful display of amphorae from the archaeological sites that interest Kamarina. Unfortunately, many of the finds did not have any labels, those who are not in the sector do not understand what they are looking at. The external area is well-kept even if it lacks signs and indications. The avenue that leads to the agora is beautiful, too bad that here too there was a lack of information on what should be observed. The east wing of the museum was under construction. The museum has so much potential: the idea of creating a museum on the ruins is beautiful. The ticket office only accepts cash in coins, in fact there is no cash register and the employee had difficulty giving us change. Entrance fee €4 per person. Ps: Another positive note! In the lower sector there were touch screens along the walls from which you could choose an find and the 3D model of the same would open, to be able to observe it by rotating it 360 °. (Original) Museo molto bello. Ingresso 4€ a persona. Ps: Altra nota positiva! Nel settore inferiore erano presenti degli schermi touch lungo le pareti dai quali potevi scegliere un reperto e veniva aperto il modello 3D dello stesso, per poterlo osservare girandolo a 360°.

Other very interesting objects such as small statuettes and decorated amphorae enrich the internal part. The external one is in a magnificent position to visit it, you can take a beautiful walk in silence between the sea and fields of yellow chrysanthemums. There aren't many finds on the outside, but the place is still fascinating and not to be missed. (Translated by Google) Very beautiful and rich. Many amphorae often recycled as funerary urns by the ancient people of Kamarina, a city founded 2500 years ago by Syracuse. Also many more or less small objects recovered, even recently, from wrecks found in the sea in front. Less interesting are the few ruins present in the external part. Perhaps little known and little reported but well maintained and managed by courteous and helpful people. Not to be missed if you are in the area. (Original) Molto bello e ricco. The Staircase of Santa María del Monte, also known as Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte, is a renowned urban stairway in Caltagirone, Italy. Built in the 1600s and adorned with vibrant ceramic tiles in the 1950s, it has become an iconic landmark. The staircase consists of 142 steps, each covered with hand-painted tiles that create a stunning chromatic effect.
A beautiful place to explore in the small town of Caltagirone. The tile work at bottom show ancient historical contexts while the view at top of the stairs is breathtaking.

Gorgeous and unique staircase with beautiful ceramics! The photos don't make it justice! It is lovely! We adventured ourselves to go all the way up and then down.

We actually planned our visit to coincide with the St. James Festival as part of our Youth Jubilee program. Being right at the front row for the St. James procession was something I’ll never forget. The energy, the devotion, the scene, it was really something special. The area was packed with people, both locals and tourists, all celebrating together. Shops stayed open late and there was this beautiful sense of unity. Honestly, I just feel incredibly blessed to have been part of it. It was one of those rare, meaningful moments where everything comes together.

This is in Caltagirone. The famous Scalinata. It is thrilling to watch. Every step is decorated with ceramics. It was quiet in early July. On the 25th July it is decorated with lanterns for the feast.

The Staircase of Santa María del Monte in Caltagirone is a breathtaking cascade of 142 steps, each decorated with hand-painted ceramic tiles that narrate Sicily’s artistic and cultural heritage from the 10th to the 20th century. Walking up feels like ascending through layers of history, where every riser is a window into the island’s soul. The staircase is not just an architectural masterpiece but a living symbol of Caltagirone’s centuries-old ceramics tradition. Unfortunately, we visited on a Sunday, when nearly all the artisan workshops and shops were closed, leaving us without the chance to experience the vibrant craftsmanship that usually brings the staircase to life

The Museo Archeologico di Aidone is a must-visit for anyone exploring Morgantina, offering valuable context and insights into the ancient city's life and socio-cultural background. Housed in a former 17th-century monastery, this museum showcases an impressive collection of statuettes, sculptures, jewelry, vases, pots, and the renowned statue of Morgantina. The exhibits include the Morgantina hoard and a rich array of Greek artifacts.
A small yet very interesting museum. Demetra and Kore are definitely the highlights but there a couple more exhibits that are unique to this place and deserve a closer look.
Nikos P — Google review
Some astounding pieces from the site of Morgantina, with fascinating information about the international collaboration that took place between archeologists and curators to identify and return pieces stolen and sold to collectors decades ago. The story of the head of Hades (nicknamed 'Bluebeard') is particularly interesting!
Gilaine Y — Google review
A visit of the archeological Museum of Aidone is a must for all those that take a tour to Morgantina, as it provides much needed context and important information im regards to the life and socio-cultural context of the ancient city of Morgsntins at the archeological park. The museum is housed in the former monastery of the Cappucini which was build between 1611 and 1613 AD and was dedicated to Saint Francis. The entrance is located in the former church that is now also used as a meeting room. The museum hosts numerous artifacts from the Greko-Roman city of Morgantina that was founded around 1000 BC and from the Citatell that is the ancient site of a prehistoric town of the bronze age that dates back to around 2100 to 1800 BC. The most famous artefact exhibited is the Dea di Morgantina. A female statue that probably depicts the goddess Demeter and was sculptured between 425 and 400 BC. The statue was discovered by tombraiders and secretely removed and later sold to the Getty Museum and exhibited in the Getty Villa at Malibu in southern California. It was not until 2011 that this important and wonderful artefact was returned to Aidone, where it is now exhibited close to the place where it was originally located. The museum is usually open every day. However, on certain holidays it might be closed and it should be checked beforehand if it is indeed open. There is a combination ticket that costs €14.00 and includes a visit to the Museum in Aidone, the archeological park of Morgantina and the Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina. This is the package that I would recommend as it gives access to three very important and locally close venues that one does not want to miss. Discounts are given to those between 18 and 25 years of age and teachers. For those younger than 18, the entrance is free. One should plan at the very least one hour to examine the exhibitions and appreciate the significance of the displayed artefacts that reach back to the early bronze age.

The museum is well laid out, but it does not have a lot of artifacts. If one is visiting Morgantina site then it's probably worth it, otherwise it is not.

Nice small museum that shows what was excavated in the near Morgantina archaeological site. The most famous feature is the "Venus", that was for years in the Paul Getty Museum in LA and was recently given back. The silvers are now back, but they have to "travel" the world every 4 years because of an international agreement. Ask for the joint ticket that allows to also enter Morgantina site and Piazza Armerina Villa del casale. The three sites are very close.
Cristina A — Google review
Nice little museum with some great artifacts from Morgantina. Well worth a visit, especially if you get the combined ticket with Morgantina and Villa Romana del Casale. There is some spectacular gold jewelry and I was interested to see the painted busts. The only downside was that over half of the display notices were only in Italian.

The museum boasts an impressive collection of archaeological finds from various periods spanning prehistory to the Middle Ages.

The whole place was set up for walking in a certain direction. Best part was the wing with all the coins. Two gentleman did not allow our group to see the column because one of the men had to unlock the gate but neither would. Our group was told to take photos from the balcony almost 100 yards from the item we came to see.

Sicilia Outlet Village, located in Agira, Sicily, is a vast outdoor mall that offers a wide range of outlet stores featuring designer apparel and footwear brands. Visitors can enjoy shopping for high-quality products from both A and A+ brands at discounted prices of up to 70%. The village provides a pleasant shopping environment comparable to well-known outlet villages in other countries. Additionally, it features amenities such as a children's playground and various dining options.
À beautiful mall in the middle of nowhere-a true hidden gem ! The place is wonderful. However when visited in the summer it could be REALLY HOT like up to 45 degrees Celsius!!! (July 20th) The prices are crazy and there is a diversity in the products.

Sicilia Outlet Village is a well-situated outdoor shopping center in the heart of Sicily, perfect for a stop on your way from Palermo or Cefalù to Catania. We visited on a weekday morning, and it was refreshingly uncrowded. With a wide range of stores, including high-end brands. The prices offer some savings, though they aren’t the deep discounts some might expect. There are also a few restaurants and cafes to relax in between shopping, and tax refunds are available through Global Blue. Overall, a convenient and enjoyable spot for a shopping break in Sicily!

Sicilia Outlet Village was a fantastic stop for us, providing a perfect opportunity to stretch our legs and do some great shopping between destinations. It's a large, well-organized center that makes for a pleasant break. Brand Selection: The village has an excellent array of international and designer brands. Our teenage daughter was especially happy, as many of her favorites were available, including Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, and Nike. There truly is something for everyone, making it a satisfying shopping destination. Atmosphere: The layout is pleasant and easy to navigate, making the walking around enjoyable even if you aren't shopping. It offers a good selection of dining and cafe options for a break. If you're looking to score some deals on major brands or just need a quality pit stop during a long drive across Sicily, this outlet village is a recommended choice.

Parking is a breeze and if you have kids, you can park your car under a canopy. The place is very clean and when I visited, it was 35c, they had these poles that atomized water, my kids loved it and it cooled them down as well. It was one of the biggest outlet village's I've ever visited.

Villa Romana del Casale is a 4th-century AD residential villa and estate in Piazza Armerina, Sicily. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its extensive collection of Roman mosaics, covering 3535 square meters. Buried by a mudslide in the 12th century, the site was excavated starting in the 1950s.
An incredible location. The mosaic is absolutely stunning. There are literally hundreds of square meters of very well preserved mosaics and 99% can be visited. Tourists visit the villa on a suspended pathway that takes you all around the rooms. Follow the signs for the best experience, the people who organised the path have done very well.

Absolutely worth a visit — one of the true highlights of my trip to Sicily. The site is easy to walk through and very well signposted, with plenty of information to help you appreciate its history. I read about the place beforehand, which I highly recommend unless you plan to rent an audio guide. As in other historic landmarks, you may find guides offering their services at the entrance. Most of the site is covered, making it comfortable to explore even on a hot, sunny day. A fascinating journey into Roman history that you shouldn’t miss.
Sergio O — Google review
A remarkable place, not to be missed. We read the warnings about tour groups getting in the way but had no problems arriving at about 10.30am when there were already ten tour buses in the car park. Everyone has to take the same narrow route on platforms above the mosaics. You can wait for others to move on or you can push your way ahead, but it is best just to "go with the flow". We completed our day with a visit to Caltagirone, interesting to see the ceramics everywhere around the town.
Steven M — Google review
Fantastic place with the most incredible collection of mosaics. If you don’t like mosaics or you’re not interested in Roman history it would be boring but for the quality and quantity of mosaics it is absolutely worth a visit. It was a long drive from Siracusa and quite long from Catania with some narrow roads but it was worth it in my view. Good parking on site and a decent enough sandwich at the shops near the car park.
AA B — Google review
Outstandingly well preserved, beautiful, intricate mosaics. The layout of the villa is fascinating, showing the lifestyle of a wealthy Roman. A really great place to visit in the early morning because it gets very crowded, very quickly.
Hilary P — Google review
I hadn't heard of this villa before, but I am very glad to have visited this gem 💎 as part of a day trip. From the outside I was not expecting much, but inside.. wow! Some of the most beautiful and well-preserved mosaics I've ever seen. As well as a great example of the ingenious Roman underfloor heating. Not very busy, and we walked around slowly but still managed to see it all within an hour - but I don't know if that was just down to it being a weekday. We also didn't need to book in advance. It is definitely worth a trip.
LA M — Google review
Magnificient! The amount of mosaics and the level of preservation is staggering. Nothing like it anywhere else and it blows my mind someone was able to enjoy it in all its glory in ancient times. Audio guide while not amazing does a good job explaining the mosaics. It takes 2 to 2.5h to leisurely go through the site with an audio guide. There is a shuttle (sado) that can take you here from the town.
Z — Google review
Many people said that this is a must do in Sicily and I have to agree. A lot of history and culture preserved and presented in such an interesting and meaningful way. Although we were lucky that we visited just before the peak hours and before large school groups arrived. The paths are so small that any slightly big amount of people would make the experience miserable. Plan carefully if you want to visit peacefully.

On the way, we first got lost and ended up in very narrow streets. A local lady helped us find the right way. We arrived at the castle too early for our visit, as it was still closed. Water park
Water & Amusement Parks
Aquapark Conte Sommatino is a highly recommended water park located in central Sicily. The park offers covered picnic tables for visitors to enjoy their own food, and lockers are available for a small fee to store valuables. While some rides have height restrictions, smaller kids can obtain a waiver bracelet from the first aid office to access certain slides. The park is well-maintained with professional staff and offers a range of enjoyable attractions for all ages.
Amazing aqua park. Maybe the best place we've visited during our stay in Sicily. Very inexpensive (around 20 euro for adults and 10 euro for children between 100cm and 150cm, small children are free). A lot of very nice slopes. My daughter really enjoyed it. A lot of people in the summer so as expected you may need to wait a few minutes on line to get your turn, but after all we visited it at mid August which is the highest season. We bought our tickets online we even had a pre-booked sunbeds with fixed spots in the park for just 3 euro per person. I advise buying such as there's almost no other place to leave your belongings while going in the pools. Big free parking in front of the park, most of the spots even got shade to hide from the sun. I'm happy that there were attractions for everyone - my 3 years boy had two spots for bambini, my 9 years daughter had fun at almost all slopes and there were even 3 extreme slides for me as well.

Recommended water park in central Sicily. The covered picnic tables are free, which makes it great for bringing your own food. Costs 2.5 Euros for a locker to keep valuables like wallet and keys. Also, our kids were a couple cm short for some of the rides, but if you stop by the first aid office you can sign a waiver to get a bracelet which allows smaller kids to go on some of the slides anyway. Very professional staff and well run park.

We came to Sicily in July (2016) and came to Summation aqua park, the facilities were clean, good entertainment and most of all, enjoyable for all!! The kids loved it, the gravity slide kills you back if you're not careful, but that didn't stop us going on it many times!! Highly recommended

Nestled in the charming city of Caltanissetta, the Abbey Holy Spirit is a hidden gem that beautifully encapsulates the region's rich history. Dating back to the Arab-Norman period, this magnificent church stands as one of the oldest structures in the area. With its impressive rectangular design and distinctive corner tower, it originally served as a fortified farmhouse to protect surrounding agricultural lands.

I was looking forward to see this little Abbey but when we arrived despite the front gate was open the door of the church was closed at a time it says it should have been open. Another tourist was on the spot like us, wanting to see it and was complaining that also the day before the Abbey was closed, no clear explanation why. Looks like the priest responsible for keeping it open is rarely available... What a shame!

Originally built as a fortified farmhouse by the Arabs in the 10th century, it was transformed into a place of worship by the Normans in 1092. Consecrated in 1153, the abbey features Romanesque architecture with Norman influences, characterized by a single nave with three apses and Trinitarian symbolism. Inside, you can admire 15th-century frescoes, a Norman baptismal font, and a 16th-century statue of the Madonna delle Grazie. Lovely beach with nice view of the rocky surroundings. Compared to other beaches in sicily we have been to, it is very clean. We rented two beds for a total of €50 (at hotel Baia d'oro) which included parking and pool access next to the hotel. The sea was very shallow for the first 20 meter, but it was great to swim in. There was friendly dog walking around, which was a nice addition to the comfortable beach day we had here.

(Translated by Google) The astronomical observatory of Montedoro is a gold "mine" for the district and for the whole of Sicily. The term "Mine" in quotation marks is to describe the complete experience of the path that then leads to observation. It is possible to purchase the complete package (Museo Della Zolfara + Planetarium + Observation) (recommended) or just the “Planetarium + Observation” route. We chose the first option, the visit to the museum is educational to learn about the history of the area and, for better or worse, the whole of Sicily. In fact, until the mid-twentieth century, sulfur extraction took place in Sicily, especially in the central area. The sulfur mines were real death traps and accidents and deaths were frequent, especially of children, employed from an early age because there was the need to create low and small tunnels. Children and people of low rank were "acquired" through a "Dead Rescue" contract: Children often under the age of 14 were entrusted by the family to the pickaxeman, to be used to transport the mineral from the underground to the surface with piecework remuneration. The boy's family, being almost always in a state of need, had the pickman give him advances, which were almost never returned, and in fact grew from week to week, until reaching 200-300 lire in a few years. At this point the boy remained strongly tied to the pickaxe and was obliged to work as a transporter for him until he had paid off the debt. And it was not uncommon for workers aged 30-40 years to be left "stranded" because they had not yet returned the "dead help". The pact of "dead help" (dead because it did not produce interest) therefore strongly tied the "caruso" to the pickaxe and originated from the great shortage of transporters, which gave rise to great competition among pickaxers to get hold of them. As for the visit, you then go inside a mine and a furnace for sulfur extraction. After the visit to the museum and the mine we move inside the planetarium where the interactive viewing of short films and the subsequent explanation makes everything fascinating. The final part is direct observation through the telescope. In my case the evening was dedicated to our satellite: the Moon.

Mussomeli Castle

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
An absolutely stunning castle perched high above Mussomeli with breathtaking views of the Sicilian countryside. The medieval architecture is incredibly well-preserved, with dramatic stone walls and arched doorways that transport you back in time. Built in the 14th century by the Chiaramonte family, it was once a powerful military fortress (despite never actually being in any battle or war). A must-visit of Mussomeli.

A very well-preserved Norman castle with an interesting history. Beautiful interiors, dungeons and winding corridors stimulate the imagination. One minus, for which I lower the rating: 3 times, in different periods I found the building closed and the telephone number did not work. I was lucky to visit the castle only on the fourth occasion and I am very glad that I managed, because it was a great experience.

Valley of the Temples

Archaeological site
Sights & Landmarks
Valley of the Temples is a vast archaeological site in Sicily, featuring ancient temples and ruins of the city of Akragas. The city, known as Agrigentum to the Romans, was situated on a high plateau with a panoramic view. It boasted exceptional prosperity and magnificence, attracting foreign visitors.
Visit in the afternoon for less crowds and less heat - the shadows also make for much more cinematic photos! The bookstore has very cute souvenirs, most reasonably priced. Bring water as the water from most fountains on site is drinkable.
Kaja U — Google review
We visited Valle dei Templi in Agrigento with a group of students, arriving shortly after breakfast. The weather looked uncertain — dark clouds rolling in and a bit of wind — but that didn’t dampen our spirits. A resourceful vendor near the entrance was selling umbrellas for 10 €, which turned out to be a good investment! Despite the stormy skies, the site was absolutely spectacular. Walking among the ancient Greek temples — especially the Tempio della Concordia — gives you a real sense of timelessness. In front of the temple lies the striking fallen statue of Icarus, a modern bronze sculpture that contrasts beautifully with the ancient ruins and seems to capture the fragility of human ambition. It’s one of those sights that makes you stop and reflect before moving on. The paths are fairly easy to walk, though good shoes are essential. The site is large, so plan at least a couple of hours to explore it properly. There are rest areas, cafés, and a small bookshop near the entrance. This was one of the cultural highlights of our trip through Sicily — impressive, educational, and deeply moving. Tip: Go early in the day or later in the afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds. And if the forecast looks iffy… buy the umbrella!

I was really excited to visit the Valley of the Temples while in Agrigento, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The site hosts some of the most well-preserved Greek ruins in the world, and seeing them up close was mind-blowing — the history and architecture are just incredible. We spent about two hours exploring and the Temple of Concordia was the standout for me, with endless photo opportunities. A smart move was taking a quick €3 taxi one way to the upper entrance, which made the visit easier. Entry was affordable, access was simple, and the whole experience felt special. A must-see and easily one of the highlights of the trip. Saluti.
Frank F — Google review
Surely one of the most significant and popular archaelogical sights in Sicily. A very unique experience that you need more than a day to fully discover. So many interesting features along this walk, not a difficult trek, easier if you start at the upper temple by taking the taxi from the parking area and work your way back down to it.
David F — Google review
The site is interesting but the visit could be better organized. Parking is paid separately, and you only learn ticket prices (€17 for entry) after passing a security check, and then for the lower garden (€7 more) only after you've descended about 10 meters down the path... Clearer pricing at the entrance would help. The electric cart costs €4, but the area is small enough to walk comfortably. The temple looks impressive from afar, though up close much of it seems reconstructed. The market-style entrance with many souvenir stalls feels a bit commercial. Overall, worth seeing, but the experience would be smoother and fairer with better signage and simpler ticket options.
Kuba S — Google review
The best preserved Greek Ruins we have seen. The site is very easy to walk through without too many steps (Children & Senior Friendly). Keep in mind the only public restrooms are before you go through the ticket entrances and one in the middle by the cafe. There are plenty of shaded areas to walk through and rest in. Plenty of parking at entrances and lots of photo opportunities. I highly recommend a visit.

***Valley of Temples, Agrigento, Sicily*** The Valley of Temples in Agrigento is a stunning glimpse into the ancient world. Walking among the ruins of towering temples dedicated to Greek gods, you’re transported back to a time before the Common Era. The site is a powerful reminder of how time — the ultimate force — destroys everything. The beauty of the ruins, set against the Sicilian landscape, is awe-inspiring, offering a humbling reflection on the fragility of human achievement.
Tigran P — Google review
One of the best preserved and most impressive ruins to visit, it is intense walking in the heat from one temple to the next. At least 3 hours to see them all properly. One star deducted as we were charged €17 entry (€3 for the gardens) and the gardens were closer anyway.

The Temple of Concordia in Agrigento, Sicily is a well-preserved ancient Greek temple with Doric architecture. It is part of a larger site that includes eight temples and various other remains, all located in the same area. The temple itself is considered one of the world's best-preserved Doric temples and offers a romantic setting amidst wildflower-dotted landscapes with distant views of the sea. Visitors can explore the site on foot or take a minibus for convenience.

It was a great experience to visit this archaeological site. I really appreciated the history behind the site. Just one to think about if you’re driving there, park in the car park at the bottom of the site and take a group taxi which is €3 euro per person. They will take you the top. This means you can walk from the top to the bottom in 1 hour or so, rather than walking up to walk back down to your car.
Rushil V — Google review
The archeological park is very big, so bring comfortable shoes. We happened to visit an hour before sunset, on a spectacular day, so we had the chance to admire the temples both with the natural light and in the sunset colors. At the end of the visit, the temples were bathed in artificial light, with a black background and was a breathtaking experience. All the monuments and main spots in the park had panels explaining the history, the architecture and drawings of the buildings, to provide the visitors a full perception of the magnitude of the ancient architecture. A guided tour is recommended, to be sure no details or aspects are missed. If you visit the site in a hot weather, bring a hat, sunscreen protection and plenty of water. A bar/cafeteria is located inside the park.

Very busy and difficult to get a photograph without somebody else in it. However, it is rare to see such a beautiful ancient temple so well preserved. I thought the entrance price was a bit high by Italian standards and the ticket seller was grumpy because I wouldn’t buy the guidebook, which is a bit pathetic really.

If Greek temples had celebrities, this beauty would be Hollywood royalty. Incredibly well-preserved (thanks to its medieval gig as a church), it’s the poster child of Doric architecture. Majestic, serene, and Instagram-ready. Don’t sleep on it. Built in the 5th century BC, topped with a church conversion in the 6th century AD.

Enter The Valley of the Temple from the door. 5 (porta V) is the closest entrance to the gardens. The entrance will be next to the first temple. By giardino they mean a mainly lemon fields and a small vegetable garden. The cave can’t be visit without a previous booking so make sure you book un advance. No information charts are around the area so it makes the visit a bit boring without much info. I believe the place has great potential but a thought storytelling is needed. Many benches and places for a rest is good so bring food and you can sit here.

Wow! Beautiful botanical garden on the site of the ancient Greek garden at the foot of the Valley of Temples. Also not to miss: the "hypogeum" -- an ancient tunnel carved through the hill (under the Temple of Castor and Pollux) joining the garden with the Fifth Gate. After baking your brains out visiting the temple complex under the merciless sun, treat yourself.

This is a great example of how plants were grown and used centuries ago! Expect to see plenty of citrus and olives!!

If you like ruins and history, this place is amazing. The ruins are in very good condition. Some have been reconstructed, but the main temple is the original as it was used as a church and thus not destroyed for its stone. If possible, I strongly suggest that you hire a local guide as there is so much rich history and so many stories with this area. We learned so much from our guide, Marco. He was very kind and took the time to really explain to my son the history and about archeology. If ruins and temples are not your thing, then skip. However, if you are interested in seeing and learning about history from over 2400 years ago, this is your place. I’m glad we made the stop here and we also enjoyed a one night stay in the town.

Worth a detour to see all the varieties of fruit trees grown and sample some as you wander around. The temple of Vulcan was probably not worth the walk over. We also tasted a variety of marmalades they make - delicious. Also try the nut sweets.

Nice garden inside the park, with some local trees like lemon, orange, almond, chinotto. It is interesting but comparing with the rest of park, not sure if it is worth the 5€ additional for the ticket.

The Stair of the Turks is a stunning natural wonder located near Realmonte, 15km west of Agrigento. This terraced rock face features striking white cliffs that descend into the azure Mediterranean Sea, offering a serene walkway with breathtaking views. The giant staircase-shaped rock outcropping is made of soft limestone and blinding white marl, creating a mesmerizing sight against the blue sea.
Top place, a must see when in Agrigento. Aim for the golden hour, sand beach is also great. No entry fee.

Spectacular white limestone cliffs by the sea, truly unique and breathtaking. A great place for photos and to enjoy the view, especially at sunset. The walk down can be a bit challenging, but the scenery is absolutely worth it.

Pretty natural rock formation. It can be tricky to find good spots to view them, but there are a few spots from the beach and an overlook where you can snag a look.

A Natural Wonder Marred by Poor Organization and Filth: The Scala dei Turchi (Stair of the Turks) is, without a doubt, one of the most naturally beautiful and impressive geological formations in all of Sicily. The blinding white marl rock that cascades down to the turquoise sea is truly stunning and unlike anything else—it is absolutely worth seeing for its unique beauty and dramatic contrast. Unfortunately, the experience surrounding this natural wonder is profoundly disappointing due to incredibly poor maintenance and organization. The surrounding paths and the entire route leading to the rocks were incredibly dirty and full of trash. For such an internationally renowned site, the lack of cleanliness and general upkeep is truly shocking and detracts significantly from the natural beauty. The whole setup feels poorly managed and disorganized. The confusion over access compounded the frustration. There was a dedicated entry point requiring a paid fee via a QR code system, yet the actual gate was just a simple wooden barrier and wide open, with no staff present to monitor or charge visitors. Naturally, seeing the path wide open, everyone proceeded to enter. However, this lack of clarity led to an extremely unfair and odd situation. Later, police arrived and proceeded to fine visitors who had entered via the unmanned, open gate. This practice—allowing access to an unmanned entry point only to penalize visitors later—is an appalling example of poor organization and unfair enforcement. It left a very bitter taste and felt like an intentional trap rather than a genuine effort to manage access. Verdict: While the white rock formation itself is beautiful and impressive, the entire organization, maintenance, and the handling of the entrance fees are substandard and frankly, an embarrassment to tourism management. Approach with caution and be prepared for both the incredible sight and the disheartening, dirty surroundings.

Terrible experience. I bought a ticket for the 4:00-5:00 PM time slot, but when I arrived at 4:30 the staff refused to let me in. They were rude and insisted on closing early even though the valid time wasn’t over. The online ticket is non-refundable, so basically you lose your money for nothing. Very poor management — definitely NOT recommended.

View is nice, but they charge a scam fee to enter. Shame on them! Even tho signs on top says it's free of charge, they want you to pay for the entrance before stepping on Stair of the Turks. Since it's a long walk downhill and over a beach, most people will. My advice is to enjoy view from the top, maybe have some snack at the bar at he top and never go down.
