Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Hercules is a monumental complex located at the highest point of Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, featuring a towering copper statue of the Greek demigod Hercules. The surrounding area offers various dining options and cultural experiences, including street art in the Schillerviertel and remnants of documenta exhibitions. Visitors can also explore Grimmwelt, an enchanting museum dedicated to the Grimm brothers, before enjoying a stroll through vineyard terraces.
Hercules Kassel – A Great Family Spot! A wonderful place to spend the day with family and kids. There’s lots of walking involved, so wear comfy shoes, but the scenery makes it worth it! It’s peaceful and perfect for a relaxing Sunday getaway. Some areas could use a bit of maintenance, but it didn’t take away from the experience. Overall, a beautiful place to enjoy nature and history at your own pace.
Aswarth S — Google review
The Hercules monument in Kassel is absolutely breathtaking and truly one of Germany’s most impressive landmarks. Standing high above the city in the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, the sheer size and presence of the statue and the pyramid it rests on is awe-inspiring. The panoramic views over Kassel and the surrounding hills are worth the trip alone. What makes the experience even more special is the unique water feature system – when the cascades are running, you can watch the water rush down step by step through the entire park, ending in a dramatic fountain. It’s a spectacular show of Baroque engineering that still feels magical today. The walk up can be a bit demanding, but the combination of nature, history, and architecture makes it unforgettable. Whether you come for the view, the history, or simply to enjoy the peaceful park, the Hercules monument is a must-see highlight of Kassel.
Ermi M — Google review
Had a wonderful time visiting Hercules in Germany. The architecture and history are truly captivating. Surrounded by serene nature, the views are breathtaking. A pleasant experience I’d happily relive again.
Raj K — Google review
Beautiful place...as everyone knows it has 500 steps...that you have to climb slowly because you arrive out of breath...you can have a picnic at the bottom...but I went in the summer and the castle was horrible. And it's under renovation. Don't go inside the castle to go up and down for at least two hours while you walk around. If you have more time, even better. The fountains do not have water like in the videos for these dates and the heat was 33 degrees....
Paula H — Google review
The waterfalls and fountains are operated on Wednesdays and Sundays on the afternoon. It’s a wonderful and quite unique spectacle being a UNESCO cultural site. To follow the path of the 5 stations you have to walk over 2 Km, mainly downhill.
Ricardo S — Google review
Stunning views! Came the first week of November (so naturally the fountains/water were not running), but got some beautiful autumn colours and some blue sky. There is no fee to wander around the monument. I believe there's a museum there, which costs money. Unclear on if anyone is allowed to climb further up the monument (able to walk around the base at the top of the stairs), but there were locked gates blocking off when I went (around 1500h on a Monday). Helpful hint, I took the bus to the Herkules monument and then walked down through the park. It's a lot of stairs to walk up to the top, but really enjoyable walking downhill.
N M — Google review
Very bombastic venue, however it is being repaired and not a nice visit ( as of Nov 2035). I wouldn't pay the €8 to go up, unless you wish a wonderful view only, the the construction is rather hideous really. The cascade is worth a walk up and down. Wear good footwear; 535 steps. You can access the staircase cascade free. Chech the timings as the water is only switched on during the summer months, around 14:30hrs. Still worth a visit.
Tam P — Google review
Good for beginners, but nothing like to view, yes the city view is good and the journey from up to down is adventures

Wasserspiele im Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe

Mentioned on
3 lists
Sights & Landmarks
Park
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Wasserspiele im Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is a must-see attraction in Kassel. The 250-meter water cascade, which operates on specific days from May to October, showcases historical mechanisms used during the time of the Margraves and Electors. The park's main highlight is the 350-meter Grand Cascade leading from the Neptune fountain to the Octagon with Hercules statue at the top.
Absolutely stunning! When we visited the fountain wasn’t working (it was in April) but this absolutely did not diminish our experience. It was still impressive! The complex is quite a way up, so if you would like to avoid a climb and a hike, you can take tram 1 and then a bus to the top, and then walk down :)
Natalia F — Google review
The place is beautiful and high and you can see the area from the castle. It requires a lot of tiring walking and there is no transportation at the end of the place within a short distance. It is recommended to take water and food.
Hassan K — Google review
It was spontaneous visit and exceeded my expectations beautifully place. I recommend to check theirs website before visiting as the water features fully functioning can be seen only on Wednesday and Sunday from 1st of May to 3rd of October.
Radoslaw S — Google review
Probably the most prominent feature of the park and the main attraction to visitors! This 350 meters long water Grand Cascade stretches from the Neptune fountain at the bottom all the way to the Octagon with Hercules statue at the top. It's quite a hike with many stairs to reach the peak, however there are plenty of features, such as fountains, statues and sculptures, on the way to stop and admire. Platforms and observation decks offer nice views of the surroundings as well as of the cascade itself. I had a little bit of an issue with the cleanliness and the maintenance. Unfortunately a lot of cigarette butts, broken glass bottles and plastic trash were omnipresent, taking my focus and joy away. As for a world heritage site I would expect a different level of presentation. This is the place where the water show starts, at 3:30 PM every Wednesday, Sunday and some public holidays. It's a slow process if you are watching this at the Neptune's fountain at the bottom of the cascade. It takes approximately 10 minutes until the water reaches the pond and covers the cave. It gets very crowded here, and I mean CROWDED, therefore I recommend coming early (I secured my place right in front nearly 45 minutes prior to the start). It's quite a unique experience to see this extraordinary water spectacle! The roaring water adds a completely different atmosphere to the whole place! Visited on a Sunday in August 2022.
Pavel D — Google review
Beautiful views are worth the hike to the top
K K — Google review
Amazing water features laid out as formal gardens. By chance we called in on Wednesday at 1pm - the only week day active water is Wednesday at 2.30 (or Sunday). Highly recommend going at this time as its a very different experience.
Paul B — Google review
Must see. I started from the bottom of the hill and it was quite a climb. There was no water on the day otherwise it would have been even better. I went inside the castle and up to the pyramid. It costs 6euro but the ticket is also good for you to go into the museum.
Min — Google review
Easily one of the best experiences in my life. If you are to visit Kassel, DO_NOT_MISS_THIS! It is best to follow the water as it goes downstream. There is a particular order of venues you should visit as the water flows on. Just follow the crowd and keep the timetables in mind. It is also good to bring some wine and food along.

Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a grandiose hillside park that spans over two-and-a-half square kilometers and took 150 years to complete. It is described as the most magnificent achievement of the Baroque style in blending architecture and landscape.
Really very beautiful park... great spot to go for a walk with your family and friends enjoying the great natural scenic view along with the great view of the castle.. from 1st of May to 3rd of May you'll have a chance to enjoy the water play.. we'll once again visit this spot during this time to enjoy the water play. #familyandfriendspot #hiking #castle

Journey to the castle is great. However once you reach at the top. Nothing much to do! Something creative can be done for visitors.
Nishant C — Google review
Amazing Park with Castle and lots of walking/hiking paths. You could easily spend days here and still not get tired of it. Unfortunately it seems like the day we went they did not have the water on at the Herkules statue. Shame because otherwise it would have been even more beautiful.
Sidra R — Google review
Absolutely stunning park! The views are breathtaking, the architecture is majestic, and the walking paths are peaceful and well-kept. A perfect place to relax, enjoy nature, and take great photos. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the area!
Stefan S — Google review
It was very beautiful place to visit, would highly recommend during summer time when there is waterfall.
Sakshi D — Google review
Absolutely stunning. A lot of walking but there is a shuttle bus from Hercules to the Schloss. A lot of beautiful statues. Allow a good chunk of the day to visit and best on a dry day.
Vicci J — Google review
Marvelous piece of man made wonder. Gigantic, rusty and majestic. Nice to trek with the family and have excellent opportunity to explore the nature. From HBF, you can take tram 4 to wilhelmspark and from there either ride with bus line 23 untill Herkules or trek the 3 odd kilometers. Also there are parking opportunities near wilhelmspark tram station but it's filled quickly on Wasserspiel days (Sundays, Wednesdays and public holidays in summer). Worth and recommended.
Arun A — Google review
Absolutely gorgeous park, but be prepared to hike! Walk from the info center to the Hercules statue was about 3 hours one way. The water attractions get filled on Wednesday Friday and Sunday, so try to be at the Hercules statue around 2.

Begin your day with a visit to Wilhelmshöhe Palace, located in Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe. The park is home to the iconic Hercules Monument, the Castle Löwenburg, and the neoclassical-style palace itself. Inside the palace, you can explore a remarkable collection of Dutch, Italian, and Spanish paintings.
A nice castle in a wonderful setting. The park with its other monuments is UNESCO-listed and a must-visit. The castle hosts a nice selection of paintings (Rembrandt, Tizian, Dürer, you name it). Don't simply pass Kassel when traveling in Germany, it's a hidden treasure that not too many know about.

We visited the lower ground of the castle while on a family vacation. The views are amazing, lovely gardens and many green alleys to indulge in nature. Gardens are very well maintained and are simply breathtaking. You can enjoy a lovely view of the City from the top part of the castle

This is uour change to see the old paint Masters.. incredibble collection. The woman at the entrance really a gem for this museum
Inge B — Google review
Such an amazing castle with beautiful views. The path leading up to the tower is a moderate hike with a lot of stairs to climb but the view from top is worth the hard work.
Saurav G — Google review
The view is amazing. It's a good walk, so bring water with you. It was raining and foggy, but it was still worth it. They have some light shows at night, so I recommend going later.
Barbara B — Google review
The museum is good enough to enjoy the stories of the Greeks. However, it has no ancient monuments as it contains prototypes for statues, vases and temples. However, It contains some nice art work and it is the only place in Kassel to buy souvenirs as postcards and magnets 🧲 😀. A bit expensive souvenirs, but it's okay..

Villa Thea Kurhotel am Rosengarten is a 19th-century spa hotel that offers a charming experience for older guests. The rooms are bright and clean, and the staff is very friendly, although sometimes busy. The old-world charm of the hotel can be felt throughout, with creaky wooden stairs and floors adding to its character. Guests can enjoy simple yet nicely presented dinners at the on-site restaurant.
Helpful, sweet & English speaking reception 🥰 clean & spacious rooms, great location with a promenade by the river 🏞️

(Translated by Google) We spent one night in this very beautiful hotel. The hotel has a very special atmosphere; the arrival and welcome were very warm, and you immediately felt that something special was there. Parking directly at the hotel is a great advantage. We had a renovated room, overlooking the Saale River. It was very clean, everything was very well-maintained, and very quiet. Breakfast has everything you need to start the day well. The location right next to the Rose Garden is absolutely fantastic; the boat dock is directly opposite, and the ride on the over 100-year-old boat is very relaxing. Restaurants, ice cream parlors, spa gardens, promenade, shops, etc., all run smoothly. The fountain's playing to music is very nice to watch. We combined our little break with a visit to the thermal baths. We felt very comfortable and would love to come back.

KissSalis Therme Bad Kissingen is a beautiful and relaxing wellness destination with a variety of pools and amenities, including sauna, steam bath, gym, and saline inhalation steam room. The facility offers varying temperature pools for visitors to enjoy. It's recommended to visit during the week when there is a mature crowd to fully appreciate the tranquil atmosphere. The place also provides good camper van overnight parking and has a restaurant with delicious food options.
One of the best if not the best thermal complex I've visited in Germany. Weekdays are quieter than weekends. 23€ for 3 hours with the sauna area access is very good value for money.

Excellent place for a day in a thermal bath. We spent around 3 hours there, and it felt too short. Please remember that the place is not too big, and they calculate headcount to allow you to enter. When we were there around 1 pm, it was full, and we waited roughly half an hour. Inside, there’s also a cafe, and the same cafe can be also found at the entrance. For the price, the place is excellent!

A great place to relax with family or friends, offering multiple pools at different temperatures. I visit frequently and sometimes use the sauna, which has various types with different temperature levels. There is also a relaxation area upstairs with hanging chairs and spectacular views of nature. It’s important to note that this is a nude sauna. If that makes you uncomfortable, it’s best not to pay the additional fee. Additionally, there is a floating pool with a high salt concentration that allows you to float effortlessly. Many people don’t know that there is a Dampfbad (steam bath) upstairs, which is free to use and doesn’t require an additional fee. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and there is even a dedicated pool for people with disabilities. As for dining, the ice cream is delicious, and you can sit indoors or outdoors. The food is quite good considering it’s a pool, spa, and relaxation center. Overall, the atmosphere is excellent, and the staff is friendly and professional.

We spent 2 hours in this thermal bath. Very nice place for family, and also has a quiet place. I have had eczema in my hand for years which keeps coming back. After one day here my skin improved and healed so very fast, less that 24 hours. Our stay here was only 1 night and I wish we had more time to stay longer for my skin’s complete healing. I will definitely return and plan to stay longer in this beautiful and quite town for relaxation time and healing.

(Translated by Google) An easy climb from the parking lot leads up to Maria im Weinberg. At the top, you'll be rewarded with a magnificent view of the surrounding vineyards and the Main Valley. The church itself is rather plain and not particularly worth seeing, but a closer look at the Riemenschneider Madonna is worthwhile. The fine carving is truly remarkable, and the story of the Madonna, which you can read inside the church, is also interesting. The €2 entrance fee is well worth it. If you're nearby and the weather is good, Maria im Weinberg is a pleasant destination for a short stroll. Not a highlight in itself, but combined with the beautiful landscape, it's definitely worth it.

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Kids had an excellent time and did not want to leave. Food options are great and prices are expected to be a bit higher so no surprise there. There a re variety of rides for everyone of all ages. Glad it wasn't too crowded when we visited on 03 July. My favorite ride was the boomerang. Also there a husky friendly rides for my guys who wear a couple XX's in their shirt or waistband. Can't wait to go back next weekend.
Jules G — Google review
Great theme park, food and drink prices not too expensive. Rides are very varied with something for everyone.
Matt C — Google review
In general we had a lovely day there. The park is not that big but offers a wide range of activities for all age groups more suited for families and children. If you are an adrenalin junky you will find a few attractions but not that a variety as in other parks. We liked that there were food stalls and toilets everywhere and the wildlife areas to calm down a bit from the excitement. Some of the attractions seem a bit dated, though they are still fun to ride. The new area that was opened this year (Asia themed) looked nice, but the dragon rollercoaster didn't live up to our expectations. (no real light show or exciting exhibits, could do much better!) If you are looking for a nice family day, this will suit you fine 😉
Sebastian K — Google review
This is a great day out for a family with attractions suitable for all age groups. The park is well maintained and the layout offers plenty of shade and diversity. This would have been five stars from me if the prices were a bit more moderate. Kids pay full price from 1.40 m size, no family tickets and on site food, drinks and ice-cream are quite expensive. I recommend big families to bring their own food and drink.
Roberto G — Google review
Its a strange collection of attractions, some clearly left overs from earlier decades or second hand from other large attraction parks. But, nice atmosphere, green surroundings, not too busy. So, you pick what you like and go over and over again in the same attraction. For younger children lots of fun options. For teenagers too limited. My 13 and 15 year old enjoyed it for a couple of hours, but too few really exciting rollercoasters etc. Prices for food and drinks are high with 3 EUR for a black coffee. Zero vegan options. It's all just s bit out of date or conservative. Maybe exemplary for Bavaria?

Veste Coburg, a medieval fortress towering above the center of Coburg, is a former palace of the Electors of Saxony. It houses an extensive collection of decorative and fine art, including works by renowned painters such as Rembrandt, Durer, and Cranach the Elder. The fortress features triple fortified walls and is considered one of the best-preserved and largest castles in Germany.
Veste Coburg is an absolute gem among German castles! Its impressive walls, rich history, and stunning views of the surrounding area make it a must-visit. The interiors are filled with fascinating exhibits, and the museum offers an interesting collection of art and weaponry. Walking through the courtyard and along the castle walls is a real pleasure, especially on a sunny day. Bonus points for the well-presented historical information and friendly staff. I highly recommend it to all history enthusiasts and lovers of beautiful landscapes!

The Neue Residenz Bamberg is a grand 17th-century palace with over 40 rooms, featuring ornate ceilings, tapestries, and art. The palace boasts a rose garden and is located just outside the Cathedral in an open square. Built as the home of the Prince Bishop of Bamberg, it showcases ostentatious interiors designed by the same architect as Wurzburg Residenz.
Neue Residenz Bamberg is a stunning palace that offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the prince-bishops who once called it home. The 6 Euro entry fee is well worth it to explore the ornately decorated rooms, beautiful gardens, and the captivating Imperial Hall. The architecture is impressive, and the guided tour provides a fascinating insight into the history of the palace and its inhabitants. Be sure to set aside a few hours to fully immerse yourself in this magnificent residence's grandeur and charm!
Sumeet D — Google review
the new seat of the prince Bishop from 17th century with halls and rooms furnished also in the 18th century like the magnificent Imperial Hall. the visit is only possible with a guide but photos are allowed. amazing Tour
David A — Google review
Neue Residenz is the elegant palace building at Domplatz. It is a 40 room Baroque complex which houses the State Rooms and State Gallery along with a charming Rose Garden. Opening hours are 10am to 4pm daily and entry is €6 per adult. The Rose Garden can be accessed freely and affords lovely views of the lower section of the historic centre of Bamberg. Neue Residenz was constructed mostly in the 17th-century and is a fine representation of Austrian-Bohemian Baroque architecture. The State Rooms are highly decorative with outstanding ceiling frescos. The Imperial Hall fresco works by Melchior Steidl (1709) is a masterpiece, probably one of the finest of its kind in Franconia. The State Gallery is where you find European masterpieces mostly from the Baroque period. This makes for a nice art viewing experience as well. Easy to spend 45-60 minutes between the two, make sure to allow another 10-15 for the Rose Garden as part of your visit as well.
Brad — Google review
Touring the Neue Residenz and its art galleries in Bamberg is insightful and short enough to be digestable as well. The art galleries were thought-provoking. In the Residenz, I appreciated that historical context was given. The furniture and art in the rooms were arranged to convey their original feeling. I enjoyed that it gave me a glimpse into a different time-period. The entrance was inexpensive and the staff friendly. Outside the building, there is a beautiful rose garden with a stunning view over Bamberg. After the tour, I highly recommend a short rest in this garden (no entry fee and accessible without having to tour the building).
Klarika K — Google review
The art part of the museum was not that impressive to me, but the 3rd floor intro he residence and rooms was amazing and worth the visit.

A beautiful and historic building again close to the old town. Is right next to the historic old court and Bamberg Cathedral. Although it looks really promising from outside we couldn’t manage time to visit inside. It has a beautiful garden with mostly roses in the inner yard. Next time we would be visiting inside too.
Animesh K — Google review
Didn’t go inside, though the interior looks stunning. Just as pretty on the outside with its baroque architecture. Interesting shape too to admire in an L shape enclosing the Domplatz. Right by other sites such as the old court and the Dom. Absolute must visit when in town!

Sights & Landmarks
Bamberg Cathedral, also known as the Imperial Cathedral, is a 13th-century church that holds significant historical and artistic treasures. Originally built by Emperor Henry II, it features four spires and houses the tomb of Pope Clement II, the marble tombs of Henry II and Queen Cunigunda, as well as the famous Bamberg Horseman statue. The cathedral's late Romanesque and early Gothic architecture showcases remarkable sculptures, carvings, and choirs.
Great Cathedral very ornate. Great architecture, though it is getting some external renovation right now. A lot of cool architecture inside. Some famous statues of the king and wonderful tomb where the Lady is on the more honored side, basically because she was so beloved! There is a Pope buried in here, but I was not able to find it, though there were a few sections cordoned off.
Don D — Google review
No if you want to get a sense of the towns history visiting the Cathedral and exploring the connected / nearby buildings is a great place to start. We visited on a busy weekend but found it easy to move through the Cathedral at our own pace on a self guided tour. There were people available to answer questions and were were free to roam respectfully. Walking down to the catacomb was also a unique way to get a sense of history through the life of the space, which has had multiple fires. The stonework and scale is massive. I’m told they have music with the pipe organ on Saturdays but don’t know the details. I can only imagine what the massive organ sounds like during services.
Ross A — Google review

The Altes Rathaus, also known as the Old Town Hall, is a historic landmark and porcelain museum located on an island accessible by pedestrian bridges. Dating back to the 14th century, it has a fascinating backstory: due to the Bishop of Bamberg's refusal to allocate land for a town hall, residents built it on stakes in the River Regnitz. The building received a Baroque update in the 18th century and is adorned with famous frescoes.
What a spectacular courthouse. Built on a bridge in the middle of a river, & adorned with wonderful paintings. The little portside & its wooden crane are just below it. A gondolier plies his gondola tour up the Am Kanal, a side stream beside it. In the middle of the Bamberg old town, the surrounding architecture is well worth walking around, This is a classic of Franconia.
JB L — Google review
Fascinating historical landmark, famous for its unique location. According to legend, the city's citizens built it on an artificial island in the middle of the Regnitz River after the bishop refused to grant them land. It now houses the Ludwig Collection, a museum of porcelain and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Rob P — Google review
One of the iconic images of Bamburg. Really pretty building and a really scenic view. Detailed decorative architecture and fresco-ish external painting. The best view is from the bridge that shows the front of the building. Which is by the Tower Lots of cool stuff in that area to see as well.

J B — Google review
Probably most impressive looking Rathaus in Germany is also one of the most picturesque buildings. Originally built in 14th century, it was remodeled in 18th century in Baroque style. According to legend, it was built on the river on artificial island because the bishop refused to allocate the land, hence the bridge just straddles Regnitz River. Frescoes are very charming blending medieval and Baroque origins of city hall. Couldn’t resist going in circles around it…

The Ibis Bamberg Altstadt is a laid-back hotel with basic rooms and a 24-hour snack bar. Despite being centrally located, it offers a quiet atmosphere, making it convenient for exploring the nearby attractions on foot. The hotel's proximity to the Hoffmann Theatre makes it easily accessible. Guests can enjoy clean and functional facilities, although some found the bathrooms to be small. The hotel also offers underground parking for a fee, which was appreciated by guests during busy times such as the Christmas Market.
Sweet little hotel with a very friendly personal and a nice view from the 4th floor! Perfect for visiting Bamberg for a few days or just a weekend. The location couldn’t be better - it’s in the heart of the city and still very quiet.
Georgi G — Google review
Location is the only good about this place. Rooms are really small, I mean REALLY small. I've booked a room with separeted beds, got a double. When I got back the reception, to have it as I booked, the receptionis said this is all the rooms like, sepearate the beds. Yeah, maybe I should bend the space, so it would have enough room for it. We were there for 3 nights, the room never got cleaned. The whole place could use a renovation. Breakfast was ok, not good, just ok. Staff is below ok. For this price it is expensive.
Géza O — Google review
Rooms are very small,, One can’t even comfortably stand in bathroom..Service was not so friendly,, You need buy everything except Toilet papers
Sharadkumar J — Google review
The only modern/budget hotel in the old town. Ask for rooms facing the street side (better view) and ending in 15 or 19 (larger). Not the best Ibis shower that I know (they're generally excellent), the shower floor levels with the bathroom (don't wash too enthusiastically), and there's a GREY shower curtain that doesn't let light it (now that's a first-timer!).
HERM P — Google review
My husband and I arrived, during Christmas Market time. The concierge's name was Abdullah, who was very professional, personable and helpful. This hotel was close to the festivities and had underground parking. Parking fee was $20 euro for the parking, which was convenient not trying to find parking elsewhere or the possibility of walking long distances, with suitcases. The room and bathroom were very clean, location mostly quiet (in the middle of the night, there were people smoking and speaking loudly outside, which wasn't the hotel's fault), beds and pillows were comfortable and the temperature pleasant. If one didn't want to eat at the hotel, Cafe Luitpold was nearby with a delicious, fresh and nutritious breakfast. If we would travel again to Bamberg, we would consider this hotel again.
Kelly R — Google review
The central location is by far the best feature is this Ibis Bamberg Altstadt - you are just five minutes waking from Altes Rathaus, in the heart of the old town. The installations are very clean and functional. The bathroom is extremely small and they charge for the subterranean parking, which is something I didn’t see in the website. But anyway, in terms of cost benefit, it is definitely well worth.
Flavio P — Google review
Everything was great here!!! Breakfast, Clean rooms, quiet warm place, park for additional Euros, but not much. Excellent Staff service as they are very nice and kind. The location is another great item, very close to the most popular city tourist attractions. I do recommend it.
Rodrigo C — Google review
Historic house well located in the center with friendly staff. While rooms are clean and big enough, they lack atmosphere (I guess that can be expected from an Ibis?) and some maintenance (dents in furniture, plastic covers of light switch and remote control broken,...). Breakfast is OK to good, paid parking available and WiFi is slow (unless you pay extra).

Erlebnispark Schloss Thurn

Amusement park
Water & Amusement Parks
Virtual reality games, water slides & coasters in a family park with carousels & a boating lake.
This is our favorite park in Bavaria to take our grandchild. Everything about this park is perfect for children up to 9 or 10 years old. There is never a huge line for rides, and the shows are always good. The prices at the concession stands are always reasonable, and there is plenty of seating scattered throughout the park. A day at Schloss Thurn is always fun.

This amusement park was so much fun! Children and adults both had a great time. The park is really big so even if there are a lot of people, it won’t get so crowded. We went here during the weekday and didn’t have to wait for any of the rides/activities. There are so many things to do in this park and it was not possible to try everything. We’d definitely want to come back here.
Don P — Google review
It's a blast, huge, great park for a family with kids under the age of 10 or 12. It's really kitch. It is a bit run down. It has a nostalgic charm. I thought the entrance fee was a little high, compared to similar amusement parks. The food was reasonably priced. There is a portion themed for the wild west of the USA. It was super fun to spend time in a park with a section themed for where our kids were born.
Michael V — Google review
The park was pretty good, lots to do. One thing that can be done better is to, my opinion, Ban smoking in the park. As there are lots of kids there smoking should be banned as an effort for kids and nonsmokers to have a better day while in the park. Some food stands need customer service training for sure, food safety is not practiced as it was noticed. But overall the park and the rides and the entertainment was pretty Good.

Just the best. Wonderful time. Went during the week; no wait for any bring. Just perfect.
Greg M — Google review
This amusement park is ideal for a family with young children, my daughter is 3 years old, she was able to take part in all the attractions, except for two of which she has not yet reached the size. had. The park is well-kept and lovingly laid out, a bit old, a bit dusty, but definitely worth a visit for the whole family.
Tilman B — Google review
Great place for kids, I came with a 9 and a 11 year old they went in almost all the rides multiple times. The park is not so big but it has enough to spend a day of fun. Definitely recommend and will be back when possible.
Manny L — Google review
Very nice semi Theme park close to Nurnberg. The kids and the eldery 😁 had an very enjoyable time. The food was not to good though, which was a shame. All and all a good day with lots of fun and good weather!

Another fabulous castle brought to you by princess Wilhelmine of Bayreuth! This castle is thousands of years old and you can wander around it. 😃There is a short introduction in German then you are left to adventure through the structures on your own. Outside there is an amazing park with walking trails and giant rocks. Bring a small picnic if you want to hike and you will find beautiful places to sit inside the park.

Very mythical and beautiful, some of the history here has been removed mainly structures, but the Roman and medieval history here makes it a must-see

We did not got to visit the castle but took the walk through the Rock garden, it was in autumn and so green and calm. And yes, there are some interesting remains of the original constructs. Follow our adventures #SLYSTRX

Surprisingly beautiful hilltop18th Century Baroque Catholic Church (especially the inside!) in the center of a charming small town which is itself centered among a beautiful rocky river valley geography. Plenty of nearby parking (bring €2 coins!). An important Bamburg pilgrimmage basilica built atop existing religious sites in Franconian Switzerland. Also a Pokémon Gym!

(Translated by Google) You should definitely stop by here! The basilica and the garden are simply beautiful and totally idyllic, both to walk around and to sit and linger. There are lots of options in the back to light a candle, which is super nice. And there is even a small shop where you can buy, among other things, rosaries and the like. (Translated by Google) A great basilica. Together with the medieval, fairytale knight's castle, it shapes the townscape of Gößweinstein. The facade made of bright ocher yellow sandstone is clearly structured. It is dominated by a richly decorated portal and the statues of the diocese saints, Emperor Heinrich and his wife Empress Kunigunde. Inside, the baroque high altar attracts the attention of church visitors. The miraculous image, the destination of pilgrims from near and far, represents the coronation of Mary by the Holy Trinity. A powerful organ sounds during the solemn services, played by a gifted organist. A visit to the neighboring pilgrimage museum is also worthwhile.

The Imperial Castle of Nuremberg, also known as Kaiserburg, is a majestic 11th-century castle complex that includes a royal palace and gardens. Perched on a sandstone cliff overlooking the city, it is divided into three parts: the imperial castle Kaiserburg, noble buildings in Burggrafenburg, and other structures to the east in stadtische Burganlage.
One of the most well kept castles for its size and age. Not a lot of English info so prepare to get the audio guide if you want to know more about the castle. Had fun climbing the tower and the views of Nuremberg were unmatched!
Elle F — Google review
One of the iconic castles of Germany, with loads of imperial connections, and well worth braving the rather steep ascent (the views are great, too). Part of the fortifications that lure you up are actually the city wall, not the castle proper, but the overall effect is what counts. If you are spendthrift, skip the castle interior (interesting, but nor overwhelming), and definitely do not eat there (much better value can be found around the nearby Dürerhaus or in town).
Bernd B — Google review
Definitely worth the price of admission. Lots of walking so wear good shoes. Make sure to check out the bridge near the bus drop-off point for the best view. No photography once you are inside. The castle is fabulous. There are bathrooms and a small Cafe inside. Get there early to avoid the crowd.

From other reviews, didn't believe there'd be a lot of items to see in the museum. Was very surprised at the amount of historical items and information provided. The views of the city were fantastic along with the historic background. Very easy walk even inside the museum and inner grounds. I highly recommend to anyone visiting.

The Imperial Castle is the symbol of Nuremberg. Since the Middle Ages its silhouette has represented the power and importance of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation and the outstanding role of the imperial city of Nuremberg. From 1050 to 1571, all Holy Roman Emperors resided – at least temporarily – in the Imperial Castle. An archeological exploration of the grounds of the castle has revealed remains of a fortress.

St. Lorenz Church is a restored Gothic church in Nuremberg, Germany, which suffered severe damage during World War II but was rebuilt. The church features impressive interior artwork and a large organ. Visitors can explore the Nuremberg Old Town with a local expert guide to see four beautiful medieval churches, including St. Lorenz Church, and learn about their unique historical stories.
Absolutely beautiful. Historical cathedrals with their spires, intricate side chapels, and impossibly high ceilings are a must-see for me. I just can't imagine praying in one... I'd be too distracted!

St. Lawrence is the Cathedral Church of Nuremberg with twin bell towers. It is located in Alstadt very center surrounded with many market stalls. Church is free to enter with tall classic Gothic arches inside with very few stained glass. WWII devastations miraculously spared the twin towers which only endured minor damages
Dejan B — Google review
Gothic masterpiece church dominating southern part of old town was built over the period of 2 centuries from 1250 to 1477. It was burnt out at the end of WW2 and reconstructed in 1952. Artwork was preserved in underground bunkers prior to bombings, so wooden rosary with suspended in mid-air figures and stain glass are original to medieval period.
Mike Z — Google review
Almost a twin of the St Sebald (might be?) but with it's own architectural marvel. In a large market square with farmer market and many open square restaurants
Don D — Google review
St. Lorenz Church is one of the most important Gothic churches in southern Germany and a defining landmark of Nuremberg’s old town. Built between the mid-13th and 15th centuries, it was originally a Catholic church but became Lutheran after the Reformation in 1525. Its twin towers and richly ornamented façade dominate Lorenzer Platz. The church measures approximately 91 meters in length, 27 meters in width, and its towers rise to about 80 meters high — making it one of the largest churches in Bavaria. We didn’t have the chance to go inside, as a concert was taking place at the time of our visit. However, even through the closed doors, the sheer power of the sound resonating from within was striking — a clear reminder of the building’s scale and extraordinary acoustics.
Anna K — Google review
St. Lorenz dominates Nuremberg’s Old Town with its towering Gothic façade and twin spires that seem to pull the eye upward the moment you step into Lorenzer Platz. The intricate stonework of the main portal and rose window is stunning up close, and the scale of the building makes it impossible to miss while exploring the city center. Originally built in the 13th century, the church was heavily damaged during World War II and carefully reconstructed, a reminder of both destruction and resilience in Nuremberg’s history. Inside, it houses important works of art, including Veit Stoss’ soaring wooden Angelic Salutation and stained glass that dates back to the Middle Ages. Even if you only admire it from the square, St. Lorenz offers one of the most striking examples of German Gothic architecture in the region and connects directly to the layered history of the city.
E P — Google review
Hugely impressive historic church! Worth a visit.

St. Lorenz Church in Nuremberg is a breathtaking example of Gothic architecture that left me in awe. The towering twin spires and the intricate façade draw you in, but it’s the interior that truly captivates. The soaring vaulted ceilings, stunning stained glass windows, and the elaborate sculptures create a space that feels both grand and intimate. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are remarkable, making it easy to lose yourself in the beauty and history of the place. St. Lorenz is not just a church; it’s a masterpiece that speaks to the soul.

Erlebnisfelsen Pottenstein is a must-visit destination in Pottenstein during the spring and summer. It offers an amusement park experience with toboggan runs, rope courses, and a viewing deck overlooking a forested canyon. This is an ideal way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Franconia without extensive hiking. The park provides various rides suitable for families, including toboggan runs that offer adjustable speeds and are reasonably priced.
A day trip in Pottenstein can be fun with this experience. It has only 3 rides but all of them were funny and very kids friendly. The tickets costs 4€ for each ride. The que was very long hence buy all 3 tickets together and enjoy!
Virta W — Google review
A fun place to spend a day. You can buy a per ride ticket. That way you can buy tickets only for the rides you are interested in. There is a restaurant and a small ice cream shop inside. Washrooms are available in the premises and there is plenty of car parking space.
Padmini S — Google review
Good place to visit with kids, we have spent some nice time being there and enjoyed ourselves. Rides were good and safe for everyone. Restaurant was good but due to heavy crowd the waiting times were too high.
Hemanth S — Google review
Kids and adults both had fun here! We came here in the morning of a weekend. While the parking was quite crowded, we didn’t have to queue up for each ride. There were more people coming after lunch time though.
Don P — Google review
The site itself is lovely, the facilities are fun, the view is amazing, there is a comfortable restaurant and convenient parking. But we had an unpleasant experience. We bought 6 tickets at the ticket office - 4 for the roller coaster for all of us (a couple with two daughters) and 2 for the sleds just for my husband and daughter. After we all did the first slide, my husband and daughter went to the sled slide. The line was long but we waited patiently. When it was there turn, my husband already went in with his ticket and when my daughter tried to go up with her, it was listed as having zero balance! Even though the four used tickets were separately in my pocket. Unfortunately, they left the line and went back up. When I went up to the cashier and explained the situation, she acted like I was trying to lie to her. When I realized there was no one to talk to, I bought two more tickets. I wasn't bothered by the money but by the feeling that she didn't even think there was a possibility that there was a problem with them. When my husband and daughter went back to the line, the same thing happened to another father and son... too bad.
מוריה ש — Google review
Fun time! Rides for all ages so bring the whole family. Best part is free admission! They charge per ride/attraction and the prices are very reasonable. Of Disney charged per ride they'd go out of business but here it's a great working model.
Philip S — Google review
It's your typical amusement park. Not too big, there are a couple of nice rides, nothing too extreme so it's ok even for someone who isn't an adrenaline junkie. The waiting lines are decent even on a weekend.

Devil's Cave

Devil's Cave, also known as Teufelshohle, is a fascinating multi-chambered limestone cave with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. The cave earned its name from local folklore attributing the disappearance of livestock to the devil. Discovered in 1922, it revealed animal remains that had fallen into the cave. Visiting the cave involves navigating through different chambers with tight passageways and low ceilings, making it unsuitable for strollers or carrying infants.
Nice cave, a pleasant guided tour (in German). Inside the cave there are quite a few staircases, be ready you go up and downstairs quite a lot. We were there on a long weekend, it was quite crowded. You buy the ticket first and get a time slot to visit the cave. In our case slots were available in about 30 minutes. The tour lasts about 45 minutes.
Дамир Б — Google review
We did the 40 minute group tour and found it interesting and informative. It is cold and wet inside so appropriate clothing and footwear is a must. Also, be prepared for a long walk. There is paid parking outside the caves and the max duration to park is 2.5 hours. There is a café at the exit. It also sells a few souvenirs.
Padmini S — Google review
The best place to visit near Nuremberg, amazing atmosphere, Nature at its best, chilly inside the cave with a lot of stones made of water drops over the year and one was 2000 years old. The guided tour with the German and English language and the guide was super nice. The ticket price was just 9 euros for adult, it was around 45 mins of tour inside the cave. Once in a lifetime experience for me. Deutschland Ticket works there in Schmetterling Busses. What are you waiting for?
Rahul P — Google review
It's wonderful! I'd recommend a guided tour and warm clothes. Not for disabled people. Lots of stairs and tight on several parts of the way. Absolutely worth it. Dogs are allowed.
Sabine W — Google review
We visited on a Sunday, early afternoon. It wasn't overly crowded. The tour guide also spoke in English. It was worth the trip. It was a good experience. After exiting the cave, you can enjoy a nice refreshment at the cafe, go for a hike, or visit the coaster park (up the mountain). We were very pleased.

It's my second time visiting this complex and I can highly recommend it. This time, I found out that the museum itself has been closed for several years already due to extensive renovations. Unfortunately this wasn't very clear online and when you get there the signage isn't very clear either - we walked right past the containerized ticket booth because when you walk towards the building from the parking lot, you can't see the signage. However, visiting the special exhibition was worth it. It's immensely important to expose yourself to our history - maybe one day we will learn?
