A real treasure from the Roman times - one of the best samples of "villa rustica" all over Europe! Nicely done visitors center. English spoken. Parking on the spot.
Patrick G — Google review
The Vila is unique! And if you are around must visit! The lady guide was very good and polite. We was so impressed by the place that for sure we’ll visit again. The mosaic and all the artefacts was genuine and unique. Thanks to the nice lady we was very impressed.
Kambi K — Google review
Amazing! An incredibly well-preserved and unique villa of a Thracian noble family that ruled a vast, wealthy region. The history of the place was very well explained by the guide included in the ticket price (than you for that)!
Yanko D — Google review
Wonderful location, very well restored. I did not expect at that time that there was such a floor heating technology for the rooms and the pool. Exceptionally well preserved mosaics. Here for the first time I saw the broken cross, which in ancient times meant something else (circle of life).
Veselin B — Google review
It's a huge luxury villa, 1st century AD, a lot of preserved mosaic. Interesting to see.
Evgeni A — Google review
Very well preserved, magnificent ancient villa, full of exquisite mosaic. Many artifacts are original. The tour guide's lecture is thorough, informative, providing details about the villa construction, the owners, their superstition, their habits, the legends, the symbolic meaning of images of gods and animals depicted on mosaic. You'll be submerged in ancient times as all those mythology stories will take you in a fairly tale. Amazing mountain views from the villa and the panoramic tower. Well-maintained yard for observing the nature. Big parking; facilities accessible for all ages.
Marina M — Google review
Villa Armira, gives a really good image of what life was like for a very wealthy Thracian family living during the Roman rule. Contains the oldest and best preserved Roman/Thracian mosaic in Bulgaria. Even features ancient underfloor heating mechanism, the staff were also very friendly and very knowledgable.
Karolina S — Google review
I recently had the opportunity to take a tour of Villa Amira in Bulgaria, and I can't recommend our guide enough! They were incredibly knowledgeable about the villa's history and architectural details, making the experience both informative and enjoyable. The tour was well-organized, allowing us to explore every beautiful corner of the property. Our guide was friendly and approachable, answering all our questions with enthusiasm. If you're considering a visit to Villa Amira, definitely ask for this guide—you won't be disappointed! Thank you for a memorable experience! Ask for Vesela great guide A+++

Go there to say hello for dead souls. Here you can see that our humanity has not changed. They had hopes for the future, believed that everything would be fine and stayed together.

Amazing view, place full of energy and peace at the same time. Easy to get there, the road is OK and you will enjoy beautiful nature views while driving.
Venetsia K — Google review
Absolutely fascinating place! The Thracian sanctuary near Tatul Village, is a really unique place! It is very easy accesible place just 200 m away from the village or 15 km away from Momchilgrad. The sanctuary is a massive rock structure and its top is a truncated pyramid. There are a rock sarcophagus, a rectangular bed for the main altar, and a three-metre-deep well.
Ivanka M — Google review
Wonderful views. One the famous local sightseengs, entiant historical. There is an entrance fee but you can avoid it if you go after the working hours. They were doing some restavration the last time I went but I believe they shouldn't cause it doesn't look as it was. Be careful with small kids as it's really high. Unknown from the tourists there is also a small "cave like" which we found by coincidence. There are no guiding signs for it but if you want to see it - After the old weapon go in direction behind the water well go in straight direction little bit on the right and you will see it behind a big rock. We named it The small womb ;)
Vladislava G — Google review
Great place for a one day visit. It has an entry fee of 4 lv for adults and 2 lv for children and pensioners. Eco toilets at the entry and several benches.

Great and well kept location, with some additional sights nearby.

Ancient sanctuary city Perperikon

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Ancient Ruins
Sacred archaeological site & ruins on a rocky hilltop with remains of ancient temples & palace.
Nice location, nice views. Access , parking and souvenirs are cash only. Toilet is near entrance at the bottom of the hill. i recommend to buy a map from the souvenirs shops, because up there is hard to find the exit .
Radu M — Google review
One of the most gorgeous places in BG! But again you are seeing how the money from the European grant are somewhere disappearing! Not enough information when you are inside, no signs and 14 BGN for this archeological treasure, water and toilet only near the entrance, and few benches on the top of the heel! But again, the place itself is incredible!
Наталия Т — Google review
The site is great. But we bought the map the woman on site sells, which we suspect is really old, and it doesn't match anything on the site. Don't buy the map! Research in advance and if you can find one, get a guide.
Marjorie G — Google review
Worth to visit. A site inhabited from Neolithic times to the late medieval era and each civilisation left their footprints there. A lot more is to come, because the city is only partly discovered, but every year a new piece of the puzzle is emerging from the deep forest. To combine with Tatul sanctuary and Historical museum of Kardzhali.
Ivan Z — Google review
Perperikon is a fascinating site with a lot of history and incredibly well preserved. It seems that it is still being investigated and the majority of people there when we visited were archeologists, very few other visitors. They have recently received some money so there are good facilities and some informative signs, hopefully they keep adding more as the site is massive. Entrance is cash only so be prepared.
Georgina — Google review
Great place to visit. Beautiful scenery. Carry water, hats and sunscreen during during the summer - very hot and limited shades.
Dimitar D — Google review
Must visit. Millennials of history, massive excavations and preserved artefacts. Global scale of importance.
Valentina B — Google review
We hadn't planned to visit Perperikon but as we were in the area made the journey. Incredibly glad that we did. I'm not sure that there is anywhere else where each age has added onto buildings rather than building afresh. Amazing to be able to walk around the ruins and see the excavations being worked on.

Mushroom Rocks

Nature & Parks
Geologic Formations
Group of wind-&-water eroded stone pillars that look like mushrooms & stand nearly 2.5m tall.
I recently visited the Stone Mushrooms, and they were really interesting. The rock formations truly look like giant mushrooms, and it's amazing to see them up close. The site is easy to reach and makes for a great short visit. If you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth stopping by to see this unique natural formation. It’s a cool spot for photos and a nice break from the usual tourist spots.
Nikola D — Google review
Sweet spot right by the road. Do stop and take photos if you are passing by. You can also buy the water purifying rock called zeolit there in small packets. When added to drinking water it greatly improves the drinking quality. I love it.
Zhelyana P — Google review
Very interesting rock formations - (in the shape of mushrooms!) caused by years of erosion, well worth a visit if you are in the area. There was no one else there, it's free to see.
Philip A — Google review
It's 2 rocks about 7 feet high that have a mushroom shape to them and they're surrounded by other big rocks that don't resemble mushrooms! No charge to enter, just walk up from the road. There's 2 stalls selling semi precious stones (synthetic)? and other touristy stuff.
Queenie — Google review
If you have time and passing near-by, it is small but an interesting place to see.
Ahmet A — Google review
Great place to visit, parking on both sides of the road and a small stall selling semi precious Stones.

I've been fortunate to ride at this riding stables regularly in the summer. The setting is beautiful, with views over the village and surrounding hills. I particularly enjoy riding in the hills as the sun sets. The horses are responsive and have really helped me increase my confidence in horse riding. The stables are able to accommodate a friend with mobility needs who has been able to ride with assistance. Staff are friendly, with a lovely family friendly atmosphere. I highly recommend the stables, and would encourage others, whether confident or beginners/nervous to visit and ride.
Deb R — Google review
What a stunning place for both adults and children! The staff is highly experienced, the horses are very well looked after and great with children or unexperienced riders. Riding there is safe as far away from main roads. If you don't want to ride, while waiting for your family or friends to return from their ride, you can just sit and chill on the terrasse overlooking the village and the mountains and be entertained by hilarious mini goats and other little friendly animals! My son (who is a proper city boy) loves this place where he can wander freely and safely! He also attended the kids camp last summer and loved having art classes, building huts in the forest, and of course riding and learning about caring for a horse. We can't wait to go back and enjoy some more fun time!
Carine B — Google review
Definitely add KBS to your visit list if you're in the area. Lots of activities for little ones and adults alike. The farm itself is beautiful with breathtaking scenery. The horses are excellent, well behaved and so well taken care of. Riding lessons are informative and so much fun! Not to mention the other animal, rabbits, puppy zippy 💚, pigs and 2 incredible goats that think they're dogs. KBS is just full of good vibes, guaranteed a good time when you visit. Would give 10 stars if I could.
Jolene W — Google review
Myself and boyfriend had a two hour ride with josie leading. Neither of us had riden for years but the horses are lovely, an easy introduction to riding again, and well kept. we got to see the beautiful sights of the local area which are most certainly photo worthy. Thank you! An experience that Will not be forgotten.
Jo B — Google review
Beautiful location surrounded by animals, a really lovely escape and claire made sure we had everything we needed. The horses were beautiful and cheeky as were the surroundings. Highly recommend a massage with Villi as well :)
Gabriel A — Google review
Cannot recommend this place highly enough! The horses are well trained, quiet, and most importantly well looked after. Super scenic rides through the mountains and along the creek, a must do when you’re in the area!
Josephine B — Google review
Had a lovely 2 hour hack over beautiful scenery, accompanied by a foal, goats and the dog which was so much fun! A great experience for riders of all abilities. Can't wait to go again.

Bachkovo Monastery “Dormition of the Theotokos”

Mentioned on
2 lists
Monastery
Sights & Landmarks
Bachkovo Monastery “Dormition of the Theotokos” is a stunning Eastern Orthodox monastery located about 30km south of Plovdiv. Established in 1083, the complex features a colorful centrepiece, the Church of Sveta Bogoroditsa, adorned with frescoes by renowned artist Zahari Zograf. The former refectory also boasts beautiful murals.
Very nice meeting monastery off the beaten path. Very well preserved and maintained. We went at night yo avoid crowds, 30 mins before closing, it was amazing to tour completely by ourselves.
Carlos G — Google review
Beautiful small monastery. Excellent traditional eateries around it. It was a hot day in Plovdiv, but pleasant at the higher elevation at the site. 4 BGN to park right outside the walls and avoid the uphill walk from lower lots. It is probably hard to do this on busy days.
T V — Google review
Hi there! We visited this wonderful monastery and we enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the “Vecernia”(around 6 p.m). Located ~ two hours away from Sofia, it is attracting many pilgrims and it’s worth visiting also for its unique architecture and painting - typical of Eastern Orthodox culture. Bachkovo Monastery has at least two other church buildings in addition to its main one, its own museum and later on we discovered that it preserves a significant ossuary which can be reached in a few hundred meters away from it… So, are you ready to visit one of the oldest monasteries on the Balkan Peninsula, still active (with monks) and the 2nd largest in Bulgaria? :)✌🏻
Andreea D — Google review
Beautiful location, would have been 5 stars but the museum and some of the other rooms were still closed at 9:45am and no one was sure what time they were meant to open so didn't get to see everything I'd hoped. Well worth the journey anyway though.
Hannah G — Google review
Here, nestled in the Rhodope mountains, the Bachkovo Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos stands as a moving testament to religious tolerance and historical continuity. Founded in 1083, it has welcomed different cultures, survived invasion and change, and still welcomes visitors of all faiths to reflect, pray or simply pause. The stone walls, the quiet courtyards and the rich frescoes speak of an era when different traditions—Byzantine, Georgian, Bulgarian—and yes, even Ottoman-era coexistence left their mark. It is a place that encourages respect, contemplation and the freedom to worship in one’s own way. A truly beautiful and humbling site.
Abdulbaki K — Google review
A sanctuary of peacefulness. Some fantastic frescoes. We ate at one of the eateries on the street leading to the monastery which was below average. They all do the same thing and all look the same quality. Recommend eating elsewhere. But the monastery is great.
Jon B — Google review
A nice monastery and the nature around and the fact that in the monastery there are the graves of two people that had a major role in preventing the deportation of Bulgarian Jews during WW2
Shim S — Google review
Amazingly beautiful monastery! Definitely worth visiting or staying for a night. It’s one of the largest in Bulgaria. It’s restored and has a great audio guide. Highly recommend.

Fortress
Sights & Landmarks
Centuries-old mountaintop fort ruins with a restored church, plus a terrace & panoramic views.
Well worth the visit! Parking is up top of the hill and then you walk a few steps to the office where you can purchase tickets. Then cross the road into the fortress where there is plenty steps up. Visited on a very hot days, water is recommended. We managed to walk around and climb all the ay to the top with a 2 year old so I'd say kid friendly visit!
Detelina S — Google review
Nice views. There are lots of stairs besides the view, not very much to see. Back and forth not circular route. 8 Lev entry fee plus 1.5 for parking.
Naftali S — Google review
A tiny must see in spectacular Landscape. Parking nearby. Small entrance fee. Misty mountain scenery was perfect. Easy Access from main road. Definetely Not barrier free, because historical place withon wild Nature.

Small but very cool castle from the time of Assen II with a commanding view of the gorge and the valley. Doesn't take long to explore, but worth a visit if you haven't seen it and are into medieval castles 🙂

Beautiful place! This was stunning, and I recommend visiting here highly! It's 8 lev entrance fee per person. Stunning views when on the top. Easy to walk around as hand rails are all around (mostly) - it would feel very exposed without!

Winery "Zagreus"

Winery
Food & Drink
Wineries & Vineyards
Definitely one of our greatest experiences during our trip to Bulgaria in 2024. The winery is easily accessible, close to the main road, you can park easily close to the entrance. The wine tour started with an overview of the winery, the history of Bulgarian winemaking and a visit to their production and storage premises. However, the best part was our wine guide who besides entertaining visitors has been involved in winemaking. Huge thanks to Grozdena for making our visit so delightful. The wine produced at Zagreus Winery is really good, so we used the opportunity to buy some from the producer and take home. The wine tasting was in an excellent atmosphere as it is presented at major countries producing high-quality wine. It was supplemented by locally produced tasty snacks. To sum up our experience – the visit to Zagreus Winery really made our day!
Ainar B — Google review
We were a group of 3 visited in the winery for a tour and tastings. We just loved the tastings (they have such great wines!) and the tour so much, the view is beautiful which adds a lot of points to the whole tasting experience. And also, the guide was fabulous and kind. Definitely recommended.
Idan S — Google review
We had an amazing experience at the winery! Not only the wines were great, but the staff were extremely kind and nice people who would spend time to take you to the process of making wine, share the love for the wine and have a friendly chat about anything really. The views are astonishing as well.
Iva M — Google review
What a great tasting we had a this winery! Take it from a wine nerd: I can assure you that the Mavrud reds are totally amazing. Our tasting host Grozdena, who is also part of the winemaking team, is simply the best. She takes time, she explains the vineyards and the winemaking process and she is a very nice host. Also, she speaks french, which is nice. Un grand merci à toi Grozdena, je te souhaite bien du succès!
C H — Google review
We had a wonderful wine tasting experience at the Zagreus Winery. The tour and tasting was very interesting, held in perfect English (or French) by Grozdena, with a special focus on Bulgarian organic wine from ancient grape varieties. We definitely recommend it and will come back again!
Curtis M — Google review
We had a tasting tour and it was excellent! Amazing winery! Stunning views, excellent wines, and super friendly staff. A perfect spot to relax and enjoy a great experience. Highly recommended!
Shoval L — Google review
Thank you so much, Grozdena! The tour was absolutely fantastic, and it was a true pleasure sharing both the wine and the wonderful discussions about it with you. We learned so much from your expertise, and your passion made the experience unforgettable. If anyone is looking for a memorable winery visit, I can't recommend this place enough—it’s a must-see for wine lovers!
Iana P — Google review
Best winery experience ever!! Decided to come off the motorway en route to Plovdiv because of the good reviews. Lady who showed us around went above and beyond for us - think she was called грозде - not sure about spelling sorry!! Amazing set up, amazing views, wine tasted great especially the vinica mavrud. Would recommend calling up in advance. 10/10

Midalidare Estate

The wine tour was amazing and spectacular. We enjoyed some sparkling wine along with some traditional wines from the region. The estate was recently build and has amazing wine cellar. The guide had perfect attitude towards the group. We purchased some sparkling wine and some of the traditional wines produced by Midalidare. I have to mention that during our visit there were some activities hosted/supported by the cellar.
Iva N — Google review
I was shocked to see that this winery glorifies animal abuse with a fake bear like this right after entering the estate. Bulgaria has an absolute horrific history of “dancing bears” that “were trained with brutal methods such as hot metal plates and painful metal rings through the bears’ highly sensitive noses and jaws” (FOUR PAWS). Ignorant onlookers walk by and think it’s funny to take pictures with this fake bear in chains, and a wine estate should know better than to encourage such behaviour.
Camilla M — Google review
I had an amazing time attending my cousin's wedding at this lovely winery estate nestled in the picturesque Bulgarian countryside. The vineyards and charming architecture made it an unforgettable experience. It has definitely become my favorite place in 🇧🇬 Bulgaria.
Veronika M — Google review
Vila was a nice breakout from the city. The staff are nice, polite and helpful. Definitely recommend visiting especially if you into wine
Alexander A — Google review
I was at a wedding dinner and party last November. The hot air system failed at 21:00 and we spent the rest of the evening at 10 degrees Celsius. Sloppy organization for the price.
Ivan T — Google review
Did the wine experience in Midalidare. They take you through the brewing process and the facilities. In the end we tried 8 different wines (4 whites and 4 reds) and had a cheese and bites platter. The quality of wine is really good and it’s cheap.
Georgi M — Google review
Extremely disappointing experience at Midalidare Estate. The location is undeniably beautiful, but the service and amenities were shockingly poor. Our accommodation had no drinking water, no coffee despite a coffee machine, and not even garbage bags. Considering the high nightly rates and the absence of shops nearby, the least they could have done was warn us to bring our own supplies — instead, we had to make an unnecessary trip to Stara Zagora right after checking in. Dinner at the hotel restaurant was a disaster — food arrived after a 2-hour wait, orders were mixed up or forgotten, and the staff behaved as if serving us was a burden. We were there for a family wedding, yet the staff was disorganized and unhelpful, even refusing to assist a guest looking for a restroom for her child. The outdoor celebration was almost unbearable because the area hadn’t been treated for mosquitoes. No warning, no repellent provided, and when we asked, we were told they’d run out during a previous event. To top it off, despite being told checkout was at noon, we were woken to leave at 11 a.m. because the next guests had arrived. For the prices they charge — and with their claimed experience hosting events — the complete lack of care for guest comfort is unacceptable. We expected at least a basic level of courtesy towards the bride and groom, but instead got sour faces and indifference. I am sorry to say this, but I would never return to this place again.
Мария-Тереза К — Google review
We went to visit the winery without knowing there was a tour. For 8 lev per person, you do a tour and a 8 wine tasting. We had the whole tour in English with a nice girl, that unfortunately we forgot the name. We definitely recommend!! Oh! And buy some truffled cheese!! Only bought one and regret!!

Natural History Museums
The Regional Museum of History Stara Zagora is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts. Housed in a striking four-story building, the museum features an extensive collection of archaeological finds spanning from the Neolithic Age to the 19th century. What sets this museum apart is its unique construction directly above the ancient Roman street, Cardo Maximus of Augusta Trayana, seamlessly incorporating it into the building's design.
A beautiful museum with a lot of information about the ancient history as well the last two centuries. Many of the exhibits are also accessible to disabled people. The staff and tourguide were very friendly and professional. İt was my first visit but definetly not the last!
Hans-Martin S — Google review
A great museum with plenty of exhibits. There are descriptions in English and enough to read to get the jist of it. Set over three floors with the basement housing a roman road and pavement. Very low entry price and enough to do and see for a couple of hours.
Paul M — Google review
Ice building. A few very interesting and worthier pieces. A lot of mistakes in the titles and the objects. Does not match. So if you don’t know history you will be lost. More about ancient and Rome period. No entry possible with ISIC or ITIC cards. So we are still disconnected from the world. At the end it is a must visit. But could be better.
Aleksandar M — Google review
I highly recommend the guided tour! The museum is fascinating alone. I purchased the English language tour and learned so much from the expert tour guide. Do not miss the chance to go back in time and learn more of what shaped our world.

A Journey Through Time – A Must-Visit Historical Museum Whether you're a history enthusiast or just looking to learn something new, this museum offers an enriching experience that’s both educational and enjoyable. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, always ready to answer questions or share fascinating insights about the exhibits. It’s clear that a lot of care and passion goes into maintaining this place.
Rusiyana I — Google review
Beautifully made and there are a lot of artifacts from which you can learn about our and ancient history. In most museum you pay the same tax, but you have much less items to observe. For example, in Stara Zagora museum there were 4 floors full of history, meanwhile most of the museums offer maximum of 2. I strongly recommend visiting this museum!
Incognito_ZIT F — Google review
Its smaller but nice. There's discount for parents with kids, the real Roman street and some games for kids.

Antique Forum

Mentioned on

Historical place museum
Sights & Landmarks
The Antique Forum is a captivating site that showcases the remnants of Roman civilization, nestled in the heart of Stara Zagora. Visitors can stroll through these ancient ruins without any entrance fee, making it an accessible destination for history enthusiasts and casual travelers alike. While exploring, you may find yourself pondering which parts are original and which have been reconstructed, as there’s limited information available on-site. A visit to the nearby Stara Zagora Museum beforehand could enhance your understanding of this historical treasure.
When i was here there was a play going on of the life of Tsar Kaloyan. I was very impressed by the performance, the stage design and the history lesson that was portrayed there.
Jim S — Google review
Lovely! there is no entry fee and no explanations are given. There is only one good article (the wiki one in Bulgarian) found about this place. Nonetheless it's definitely worth talking a look. You can admire the communist buildings in the background, makes for quite an arc over history. Not clear what is preserved from Roman times and what is reconstructed
Klaus W — Google review
Great free place to walk around. Roman ruins in the city centre.
Paul M — Google review
Beautiful roman ruins, you can walk through the forum and there is no entrance fee. Problem is just that they erected everything and didn't make clear where the originals stop and the reconstruction begins. Also there is almost no information, you just walk among the place and have to guess what it is that you are walking on, if you aren't an archaeologist or historian. Good place to visit, but go to the Stara Zagora Museum first to get informed ;-)
Ju. H — Google review
If you're passing by Stara Zagora, check this place out. It's not too much left, but it's nice to see. There is no entrance fee.

The Samara Flag Monument stands as a significant tribute to the Bulgarian volunteers who bravely participated in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. This impressive structure is not only a historical landmark but also offers stunning panoramic views of Stara Zagora, making it an ideal location for photography lovers. The monument's grand design and massive sculptures evoke a sense of pride and respect, reflecting its Soviet-era architectural style.
This monument is huge! You don't realize how large it is until you get right up next to it. Very nice sculptures. I really enjoyed this. The surrounding area is taken care of well. Safe steps and no trash. Worth a visit.
Jon M — Google review
Not really something to see there and not well maintained. Also no English explanations. But a nice view over the city and mountains in the background makes the visit it worth.
Jaap Z — Google review
A must do when in the city. Stunning monument depicting the Bulgarian and Russian uprising again the Turks. This is taken from a view of history at the time. Great views across the city, definitely worth the trip. Top tip! If you are planning on walking from the city centre go in a straight line, not the way a map would suggest. There are multiple railway crossing points in a straight line walk!

The Samara Flag monument in Staro Zagora is dedicated to the events of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 and the Russian soldiers who fought for Bulgaria's liberation. It honors the flag given to the Bulgarian militia by the people of Samara as a symbol of solidarity and support. The monument is located far from the city center, offering a peaceful and reflective atmosphere.
Alexey T — Google review
The Samara Flag Monument, also known as the “Defenders of Stara Zagora” Memorial Complex, is a powerful symbol of Bulgarian courage and sacrifice. Located on the historic Chadur Mogila hill in Stara Zagora, the monument was inaugurated in 1977 to commemorate the heroic Battle of Stara Zagora during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. This battle was a key moment in Bulgaria’s struggle for liberation from Ottoman rule. The design of the monument is striking—it resembles a large, billowing flag, symbolizing the iconic Samara Flag. This tricolor banner was a gift from Russian nuns to the Bulgarian volunteers and became a cherished symbol of unity, bravery, and resistance. The flag was fiercely defended during the battle, becoming a sacred relic of national pride. The complex features an ossuary at its base, housing the remains of fallen soldiers, alongside an eternal flame shaped like bayonets—an enduring tribute to their sacrifice. Visitors reach the main structure by climbing a staircase of 100 steps, each marking a year since the historic battle. At the top stands a dramatic sculptural group of six Bulgarian volunteers and a Russian officer, embodying the solidarity between the two nations during the conflict. With panoramic views and deeply moving symbolism, the Samara Flag Monument is both a historical landmark and a cultural treasure. It honors those who fought for Bulgaria’s freedom and stands today as a place of reflection, remembrance, and national pride.
Vieru A — Google review
Impressive monument, worth the detour. Its significance may be complicated now given Bulgaria’s transition from socialism, but you can still appreciate this monument as a historical site celebrating Bulgarian volunteer forces. Difficult to imagine the scale of this monument until you see it for yourself Note: Google Maps brought us to the back of the monument which involves a steep dirt path up. Best to go from the front, where there are steps leading up to the monument

A tree of more than a thousand years. A witness of multiple events. Symbol of the city.

One of the symbol of the town. The Old Elm is around 1300 years old and Europe tree of the year. New married couples are taking pictures next to it with hopes their love to be as strong as the tree.
Svetoslav D — Google review
Species: Field Elm (Ulmus minor) Region: City of Sliven, Sliven region, Bulgaria Age: 1100 years Тhe Old Elm is a main symbol of Sliven. It is a centuries-old silent witness of the city's turbulent and heroic past. Events organised around it on occasions of historic and community significance have turned it into a major marker. It is the place where mood of the city used to be measured. Public demonstrations and parades used to pass by the tree. Today most people arrange their important meetings by the tree. It remains the most definitive orientation marker for newcomers to the city. It is also part of the city coat of arms and will remain a historic marker for future generations.

My husband said it was a very nice and sturdy tree before... Now it's somewhat dead, but they still hope that one day a sapling will grow...

One of the most common meet-up spots. You really cannot miss it. Right next to the municipality of Sliven, in the city centre. Moreover, it's implemented as a emblem in the town's logo. It's really old elm tree, alive for more than 1300 years and it's still blooming during the spring.

Extremely interesting presentation of the history, technique and progress of the rose oil extraction. The collection of the roses and roseoils' trade through the centuries. A stop to giftshop its necessary and the rose products which are being offered are beautiful and affordable. Strongly recommend to be visited.

This museum is very well set out and shows you the history and the process of the rose oil, with old instruments, documents, bottles for storage or for the sale of the oil, different types of roses, photos, to even the stand used to exhibit in Paris and internationally. It explains how the industry started, where it came from, its growth and what it is today. What I enjoyed the most was the video about the ‘Festival of Rose’ held yearly, that was fantastic. Makes me want to visit again just for the festival, and I will!

The Museum of the Rose in Kazanlak is a delightful attraction that beautifully celebrates the region's unique connection to roses. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a unique cultural experience, this museum is well worth a visit. It's a fragrant and colorful journey through one of Bulgaria's most cherished traditions. One of the highlights of the museum is the detailed explanation of the rose oil extraction process. Interactive displays and informative panels provide a clear understanding of how the precious oil is distilled from the petals of the famous Damask roses. The museum also features a beautiful collection of vintage bottles and containers used to store rose oil, adding a nostalgic touch to the experience. In addition to the historical exhibits, the Museum of the Rose boasts a delightful garden where visitors can see different varieties of roses in bloom. This outdoor space is a perfect spot to relax. The museum shop is another must-visit feature, offering a wide range of rose-based products, from perfumes and cosmetics to culinary delights like rose jam and rose liqueur. These make for wonderful souvenirs or gifts that capture the essence of Kazanlak's rose heritage.

The only museum in the world, dedicated to the oil-yielding plant – rose, is situated in the town of Kazanlak. The Rose Museum is housed in the old building of the Rose Institute. The rose is one of the symbols of Bulgaria. The museum is a part of the Historical Museum “Iskra” in Kazanlak. In 1967, a small exposition was created, which was dedicated to rose-picking in Kazanlak and the region. In 1969. the exposition grew into an independent museum. Nowadays. the Rose Museum stores more than 15 000 exponents related to the rose-picking and rose-production in Bulgaria.

Fantastic place! Why is Buzludzha’s heritage contested? 1. Historical symbol of communism • Built in 1981 as the House-Museum of the Bulgarian Communist Party. • Embodied the Party’s power, ideology, cult of personality, and the “bright future of socialism.” 2. Decay and abandonment after 1989 • Following the regime’s collapse, the monument was closed and deserted. • In the public consciousness, it became a symbol of the totalitarian past that many Bulgarians wish to forget. 3. Duality of perception • For some, it is a masterpiece of brutalist architecture and part of Bulgaria’s cultural heritage. • For others, it is a symbol of dictatorship, repression, and propaganda, unworthy of preservation. 4. Political polarization • The left views it as a memory of social solidarity and industrial progress. • The right and anti-communist forces see it as a reminder of repression, lack of freedoms, and dependence on the USSR. 5. European context • Within the EU, such sites are considered contested heritage — legacies that cannot be interpreted unambiguously. • The goal is not to demolish, but to interpret: transforming them into spaces for dialogue about the past, memory, and lessons of history. ⸻ Contested heritage = tension between: • Memory and oblivion (preserve or demolish?). • Aesthetics and ideology (architecture vs. ideological symbol). • Nation and Europe (local understanding vs. European discourse on totalitarianism). • Commerce and ethics (tourist attraction vs. “museum of dictatorship”). ⸻ Buzludzha is not just a ruin, but a mirror of the debate on how Bulgaria and Europe should remember the 20th century.

The Khadzhi Dimitur, listed among the world's top 10 alternative tourist destinations, boasts a history steeped in political significance. Originally serving as the meeting place for the Bulgarian Communist Party, this architectural relic now stands in a state of graceful decay atop a picturesque mountain. The journey to reach the Khadzhi Dimitur is as captivating as the destination itself, offering a scenic hike that marries natural beauty with the anticipation of exploring a unique ruin. The building's current condition adds a layer of intrigue and character, transforming it into a must-visit spot for those seeking offbeat travel experiences. Its dilapidated state, rather than diminishing its appeal, enhances the allure, offering a tangible glimpse into Bulgaria's historical narrative. This juxtaposition of natural splendor and historical decay creates an atmosphere that is both haunting and beautiful, appealing to adventurers and history enthusiasts alike. The Khadzhi Dimitur stands as a testament to the passage of time, inviting visitors to step into a space where history and nature converge in a striking tableau.
Max P — Google review
Probably one of the most controversial buildings in Bulgaria, the Buzludzha Monument is located near the city of Kazanlak and on the Hadzi Dimitar peak. Because of its communistic origin, the Monument suffers from variety of problems, such as ownership issues, lack of preservation strategy, no vision for its future. While the construction attracts hundreds of tourists every year, and even though it is considered an architecture masterpiece, the Monument is in ruins and decomposes slowly. Be mindful of the strong wind at the peak. It could get chilly even in the summer. If you visit, you can also check out the Shipka Monument nearby, as well as the incredible church in Shipka village.

We visited the Monument during a dull and cold day, the weather was grim and the wind was cold, though we had to walk upward towards the place after our bus was stopped for the car park was closed(occupied) by media production firm. Actually, it was only the saving grace part as we enjoyed watching actors in live recording scene while they were doing the feigned fight, otherwise it would be a disappointment.

Not much to be excited up there after a long curvy drive up the mountains which seems to have taken forever we finally got there only to find an old delerect massive building which once was!!! No toilets around no coffee coffee no tourist center to guide and give information but just that! Having said that the views from up there and around were so amazing no wonder it had being picked for such once was an amazing building. Its away from everything else and l cant seeit being turned into anything exciting for many years to come.......what a waste of resources!!!

One if not the best monument I’ve seen. The building itself is huge, way bigger than I expected, and it’s beautiful. The views and landscape around arr stunning too, I suggest you go there and the roam for a bit in the nearby forests. I just hope the bulgarian government would protect the building before it collapses

The ruins of an old communist monument. Very large and impressive and the view from the top of the mountain is incredible. The road is quite curvy but it was worth it.

One of the most iconic Communist Monuments in the world! If you are interested in Communist architecture, urban exploration then this is a must do. The place is stunning as are the views. Entry inside the structure is not currently permitted and there is no easy way to get in but don't let this put you off. As for getting there it is quite difficult without a car. There is NO car hire in the local town of Kazanalak and no public transport to the Monument. I would recommend either car hire from Sofia and catching the many Communist Monuments and statues on the way. Or an organised trip which sadly only seem to go from Sofia. You can get a taxi from Kazanalak but this will be quite expensive. Either way go; you won't be disappointed, obviously a sunny clear day helps!
Paul M — Google review
For me this was the best attraction in the region as it is so iconic. Difficult to get to without your own car but I do believe organised trips are available. We went in October And the weather can be bad so check beforehand. There are a number of steps to negotiate so not really good wheelchair access or anyone unstable on their feet.

One of the best museums I have visited in Bulgaria! Very good caricatures and a lot of contemporary art and design as well. There is a lot to do for children too - you can make your own seed bomb and then take it home to plant it. That was super fun even for adults :) The gift shop is also very good and very crafty. Highly recommend!

The museum is a great place to spend your time. Since my last visit, there have been quite a few pleasant changes. There's a wonderful interactive hall with various activities for families with children. Some of the exhibitions, on the other hand, are geared toward adult visitors. Overall, the museum is excellent for all ages.

If you are in Gabrovo, be sure to visit this museum. Everything is translated into English. You can spend a couple of hours here and get acquainted with the local humor.
Yuri S — Google review
Outside the museum is a fragmented Charlie Chaplin statue which shows promise for a humorous visit ... however this is short-lived. I actually came out of the museum feeling depressed, but maybe the joke is on me. The majority of the floors are hung with satirical images, drawings and other pieces of art. There's a child-restricted area, but I'm not quite sure why. There are nude artworks, but nothing pornographic or alarming for children. The best piece for me inside was the mirrored Fabergé-type egg with a tap. The story goes that the tap allows the cook to remove only as much of the egg that is required for a recipe and is able to safe the rest, drop by drop. There's also a labyrinth of mirrors which was short, but a strange experience. I don't recommend entering if you are hung-over or drunk! I was happy to visit the museum, but maybe the style of humour was not for me.

I really enjoyed the afternoon I spent here with my friend. The women at the front desk were helpful in checking us in and explaining the directions to us. There are four floors filled with historic and humorous arts that are well described in both English and Bulgarian. I went on an exhibition day, so there were many work of arts to see and laugh at. The labyrinth in the mirror room was my favorite, with children playing around and making it lively and colourful. The main Gabrovo bus station is just a few minutes away from the museum. So if you’ve arrived in Gabrovo by bus, you can make this your first stop before heading down to the city centre. I definitely recommend to visit once.

Interesting and quirky museum. Some fascinating exhibitions on, including "Satire and Propaganda" which features art from many different countries (from the Soviet side of the Iron Curtain). You can also learn about Gabrovo and why it's the butt of many jokes, and also a little about a famous character from Bulgarian folklore - 'Crafty Peter'. My 7 year old loved the children's room too which has a quite a few hands on activities for youngsters. Guides here were also excellent and explained things clearly and in-detail in English. This place is an undiscovered gem!

A great day our with lots of fun. I think this is one of a kind museum in Bulgaria. The home of humor and the satire. A lot of different expositions stating with the famous Gabrovo humor and continuing on with weird and unexpected things. Gabrovo people are famous for their thrift and the way to economise from everything in their daily lives. The museum mocks that and takes it to another level .

An interesting cave with a well maintained route and lighting. Please note it is best to accumulate a group of 15 people in order to enjoy the long route, which is otherwise closed (est.1 hour duration). As the day was hot and there were few visitors, we only had the opportunity to see the short 30 min route of the cave. It was still worth visiting and the labels were quite educational. Of particular interest to me were the many coins in higher parts of cave walls, as it is hard to imagine someone could have climbed to insert them there.

The walk to the entrance is not too difficult. The entrance fees have doubled from those advertised. Not good value anymore. Madura caves are much better value for money, much longer and with a guide (Bulgarian language only). This is just in do far then reverse route the same way you entered.

Beautiful! Well, it was my first going inside a cave, so I might be a little subjective, but to me the visit was exhilarating! Not just the cave, but the path to the cave is breathtakingly beautiful, with water cascades and towering rocks. And lots, lots of green in spring. There is a short route that lasts around half an hour, and a longer one, with a guide, that lasts around an hour and includes another storey of the cave that is not accessible via the short route. Recommended warm clothes (the temperature inside is around 10-13 degrees all year round) and non slippery footwear.

Great cave, first in Bulgaria, made for tourists. Slippery in some places.

Must see cave with significant importance to archeology but also very beautiful. Inside was very cold even though outside was scorching hot. The short route is great for novices and children.

Visiting this cave was an amazing experience! It was my first time inside, and it felt like stepping into a gateway to our rich history—not just a cave, but a journey through time. The surrounding nature is absolutely stunning, making the whole visit even more special. I also highly recommend exploring the eco-paths starting from the cave—they lead to the charming towns of Bozhentsi and Tryavna, offering breathtaking views along the way. A truly magical place worth visiting!

Tsarevets Fortress, perched on a hill overlooking Veliko Tarnovo, is a renowned medieval stronghold that offers a glimpse into Bulgaria's rich history. Dating back to the 12th century, it served as the primary fortress of the Second Bulgarian Empire and played a pivotal role in shaping the nation's destiny. The fortress boasts robust stone walls that once witnessed medieval power struggles and is surrounded by historical treasures such as Orthodox temples and residential houses.
Absolutely magnificent fortress accessible to public. Great light decor at evenings. Well maintained ruins and explanations. Many souvenir shops all around.

It is very beautiful to find yourself in such a place full of history, it really makes you feel special being able to walk through it and imagine all the things that have been taking place ever since it was built. The entrance is 15 leva which you can pay by card/cash at the entrance. Beware it is a long distance to walk and mostly uphill. The view is breathtaking so it's worth it. Talking about the interior, it felt kitschy and totally not in harmony with the outside and with the idea of a thousand year old fortress. It was too modern and somehow in my head it didn't add up. But beside that, the surroundings are magnificent.
Queen R — Google review
Very nice place for a walk. Not recommended to visit on torrid days in the summer time. You need at least 2 hours to visit. I didn't find a map and a written guide at ticket store or gift store. Toilet inside is cash only 1 Lev. Everything must be paid with cash in Bulgarian currency leva. You can pay with card just the tickets at the main entrance.
Marius F — Google review
Amazing place with incredible views and so much history. The walk up is a bit steep, but totally worth it once you reach the top. The ruins are well preserved and the light show in the evening is awesome. Definitely a must-see if you visit Veliko Tarnovo!
Iamandi R — Google review
The fortress is well kept and some parts are renovated very well. It takes you to the time when Bulgarian was under Ottoman occupation and how they lived before that. Really nice for a walk and the church is really nice inside.
Miroslava K — Google review
Number one tip is to arrive when it opens before the crowds. Number two tip you must wear supportive shoes. Stay hydrated. Commanding views of the city and plenty of history to absorb. Should be included on any trip to the city.
C C — Google review
Riveting experience exploring the old Bulgarian fortress monument. The area was not very crowded at around 13:00pm when my crew was there. The grounds are well preserved as well as clean. There is plenty to see with the Church at the summit and the meandering walls around the hill overlooking the city and yantra river. Free parking can be found by the yantra beach/ bridge, and from there a short walk or bus ride up to the site.

In the heart of Veliko Tarnovo stands the magnificent Monument to the Assen Dynasty, a tribute to the kings Assen, Peter, Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II. Erected in 1985 to mark the 800th anniversary of their rebellion, this towering obelisk with statues of the four kings on horseback is a symbol of Bulgaria's rich history.
The Monument to the Assen Dynasty is an enormous, dramatic landmark set on a raised island right in the middle of Veliko Tarnovo. Its size and sharp lines make it impossible to miss. From below, you get great views of the surrounding old town and the hills circling the Yantra River.

Went for the Boris Denev gallery but sadly it was closed, however the statues and the surrounding view plus the walk across the bridge is very worth it should you find yourself in a similar situation when the building is closed.

This is a pretty epic monument. I’d have loved more info about the Assen Dynasty, but it’s cool no matter what. Huge in scale, with multiple horsemen statues surrounding the central spire. It’s visited quite a lot considering there’s not a lot around it. We spent 4 nights in our RV just below it. It was a fantastic thing to look out on in the morning.

The Museum "Konstantsaliev House" offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of a wealthy family from the 17th century. This beautifully restored two-story home showcases its original timber construction and features such as living quarters, servant areas, and kitchen facilities. Visitors can admire an array of well-preserved artifacts, including vibrant fabrics and antique furniture displayed in various small rooms. The exterior resembles a mini fortress, adding to its charm.
A must see museum if you want to understand the bulgarian village way of life.
Catalin M — Google review
After reading a lot of reviews, we came to know that all all river cruise bring the passengers to this place to show them Konstantsalieva House and Nativita Church. This house belonged to to some wealthy merchant in 17th century. Now it has been converted to a museum. The exterior wall looked like a mini fortress. There were many articles on display like bright fabrics, old furniture and other household articles which were very well preserved. All the things were kept in different small rooms. Therefore we all had to go in a queue. There was a souvenir shop below selling local cheese, jam, soaps, shampoo, wine etc.
Balkrishna S — Google review
This museum has been very popular and well preserved. Also, make sure you take some cash. Because in the cellar of the house, there are some very cool handmade and hand carved souvenirs. Very inexpensive..

Such a beautiful and well preserved house. My 6 y.o. Told at the he regrets the museum ends because he would have liked to have more things to visit. Do not avoid and read the explanations available in at least 4 languages in every room.

Nice place to understand how rich businessmen from old centuries used to live. Interesting to get the multiple influences that rules the construction and the decoration. Konstantsaliev's house deserves a visit that you can combine with the multiple churches and monasteries in the area.

A fascinating home owned by a wealthy merchant. The clever designs to protect the infants from starches from traveling marauders was interesting and very clever. Furniture was sparse but a visit well worth the time.

A very nice visit to a unique house, but 15 lev, c'mon! There are much more significant and impressive sites in the country for that entrance fee! Just by way of comparison, a combined ticket to visit 6 house museums in Koprivshititsa, which are more elaborate and historically significant, costs 15 lev.

A beautiful compound for the period. I did not go up the stairs as they were steep with no railing. My wife said it was interesting to observe.

Emen Canyon

Emen Canyon, situated near the village of Emen in Bulgaria, is a breathtaking natural attraction characterized by steep limestone cliffs and the meandering Negovanka River. The area features a well-maintained hiking trail known as the Negovanka Ecotrail, which offers stunning views of the 90m-high bluffs and leads to various points of interest such as caves and waterfalls.
Very nice. Did part of the top trail, didn't want to do the steep parts. Part of the trail was too close to the cliff side for comfort, so we stopped and returned after a short while. There was not a lot of water in the river (end of April and even after quite a rainy day on the day before), so I expected that the waterfall wouldn't be impressive. Even so, the first few hundred meters were still impressive.
Daniel W — Google review
Although the river is not what it was decades, even years ago (nowadays is almost dry), the canyon is a good place to visit. Climb up the eco-path but be careful because there're some dangerous spots. You can also go down to the waterfall (probably is dried out too) but again, exercise extreme caution.
Unbiased R — Google review
A nice place to walk. Not so hard, quite easy. Beautiful nature with a nice view to the canion from above. You start from the cave (somewhere deep there is a bat colony...you need to have a strong light to see it) then you go on above the canion and at the end of the trail, a beautiful lake with a small waterfall awaits. About 2.5-3.5h to walk (with pictures included).
Nicole N — Google review
The Emen Canyon, located near the village of Emen in Bulgaria, is a stunning natural wonder offering beautiful views and tranquility amidst wild nature. The trail through the canyon is well-maintained, suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers, making it perfect for a day trip. In addition to hiking, the canyon provides opportunities for picnicking and photography, especially beautiful during spring and early summer when nature is in full bloom and the waterfalls are most impressive. Overall, Emen Canyon is a peaceful escape into nature, ideal for those seeking to relax or embark on an adventure in one of Bulgaria’s lesser-known natural treasures.

The view is amazing, the walk isn't a hard one, BUT mos of the road was so close to the clif, without handlier for safty, super dangures and scarry, also no network reception ....waterfall was dry, but the pool was very unique !

Beautiful place, you will reach it easy by car. During a hot day you can take a bath in a stream. There is a nice trail leading at the upper part all along the canyon, ending near the waterfall.
Kamil G — Google review
There is very steep path down towards the end of the trek to waterfall. The waterfall is nice approximately 5-6 meters high, but not breathtaking. A lot of mosquitoes! There is no place for swimming which upsets after all the effort. Worth it if one is staying a lot of time in the area and looking for timespending.

Cherven Fortress

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Cherven Fortress is a captivating historical site that offers visitors a glimpse into Bulgaria's rich past. Nestled near Sofia, this impressive fortress boasts extensive ruins that once housed thousands of inhabitants. The journey to the top is accessible and features stairs, making it an enjoyable hike with stunning panoramic views. For those seeking a unique experience, visiting after rain can reward you with breathtaking sunsets and possibly even a rainbow!
The Cherven fortress is really a very impressive site to visit. Unbelievable that this city that once housed thousands of people, is now nothing but ruins. But there still is a lot to see, not just the foundation ruins. And it's quite a big site, we spend almost 3 hours there. Great views as well. Would advise to pick a day with 20-25 degrees, because there is hardly any shade on the hilltop. You can also visit outside of official opening hours, as it is openly accessible, so in the summer months i actually advise visiting after 19:00 as temperatures lower.
Roel D — Google review
Medieval fortress on a hill just outside the village of Cherven. Access is via 235 steps (according to son who counted them)! Small carpark with kiosk and cash desk - neither were open when we arrived around 09:45 but the cash desk was open when we came down. Costs 10 Lev for an adult and 5 for a student. Toilets were locked as they were broken. All signs are in English and Bulgarian and have info about a lot of the buildings. Spectacular views from the top, but are some sheer cliffs so watch young children. Very little shelter at the top, but at 10:00 it wasn't too bad. Lots of small lizards in the cracks of the brickwork.
H C — Google review
A fortress that lasted between the ancient and medieval periods. It was the most important fortress during the Bulgarian Empire. Currently, the fortress is well preserved for how old it is and looks like a ruin straight out of The Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. The nature is exceptional, something unique in Europe and perhaps in the whole world.
Serafim C — Google review
The views from the top are great- the hike is fine when there’s stairs. Not so reassuring: a huge chunk of a rock broke off and fell into the staircase- made me a bit anxious. The fortress is extensive and just fun to walk around in. Nothing is too well taken care of and people carve their initials into the rocks, as there is no guide at the top. The qr codes next to the signs don’t do anything but give you the signs to read. Don’t scan the QR code at the bottom/at the car park- it’s an app that let‘s you scan bar codes that costs 0,01€ for the first day and then it’s 60€ a month- just use your regular phone camera. Entrance fee is about 3,50€ I think to remember- the little shop has no great sales, the bathroom costs but is in acceptable condition. Didn’t try the restaurant at the car park- very much liked the little dog.
V T — Google review
Love it. Well maintained. Lot of info spots. The view is breathless..

What an incredible experience. A must if you in the area. We were here unbelievably alone for the first hour and then only another couple. Great destination without the hordes of tourists.

Impressive fortress with beautiful views in all directions. There's a little bit of a climb to get to it, but it's well worth it. There are panels with explanations in both English and Bulgarian.

Extraordinary place with breathtaking panorama views. The fortress is really fascinating and its well preserved. The battle tower is iconic. The whole location has been used in the popular tv series “Game of Thrones”. I loved every part of the place and its perfect for families and large groups. Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo

Mentioned on

Church
Sights & Landmarks
The Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo are a 13th-century monastery complex carved out of rock, featuring well-preserved frescoes. Located in the Asenov quarter, this site is nestled between the hills Tsarevets and Trapezitsa in Veliko Tarnovo. The church, dating back to 1360 AD, is built into a cliff face and showcases intact frescoes on the ceiling.
I think the rest have already said almost everything, so I will focus on the main church and the frescoes. If you are interested in Medieval Christian art, you should definitely visit the place. Each scene is vivid and rich in colors, wish more of them were saved. The skills and talent of the artist are of a very high level. Too bad that most of the faces are erased, cause those saved have such details that make each person almost alive. The church is located in an amazing place, with beautiful views of the river and the surrounding hills. Wish we had the time to see the rest of the churches, but the place needs some better treatment, since (if you exclude the main church) the rest looks abounded, even though this is a UNESCO site.
Alexandros T — Google review
The nature is gorgeous in the area. The climb to the cave church is easy and pleasant. The cave church is truly a MIRACLE. The entrance fee can be paid in cash in Bulgarian leva or Romanian lei.
Serafim C — Google review
When visiting this site, you park your car and walk past the gift kiosk and paid washrooms, following a dirt road through the trees. You’ll come to a set of stairs that lead up a hill. From the hilltop, you can see a rocky outcropping that once held other rock-hewn churches (now closed). Continue along the track until you reach the entrance to the site that is open to visitors. The entrance fee is paid there. The staff are knowledgeable and passionate about the local sites. An English-speaking staff member explained the history of the site and offered some literature to borrow, which helped us better understand the church and its frescoes, which are quite impressive. From there, you descend another set of stairs that take you back to the parking lot.
Anisa Z — Google review
It was worth going and climbing the rocks. The rock churches were so spiritual, so special. It made me cry. Just tears coming down. I was overwhelmed. Such a secret place. You'll enjoy the wall paintings which were drawn in the 13th century. So amazing. The guides speak multiple languages, are very helpful, and nice. Must visit!!!

The Monument of Liberty in Ruse is a significant tourist attraction located in a beautiful park. It was built to commemorate the liberation of Bulgaria and Ruse from the Ottoman Empire's rule in 1877. The statue depicts a woman holding a sword, facing North towards Russia, which is part of the city emblem's design. Initially, it was supposed to have a statue representing Tsar Liberator Alexander II on top, but citizens opted for one symbolizing freedom instead.
Nice monument, very central, seems maintained. Loved the lions.

First Time in Eastern Europe – Bulgaria’s Warm Welcome This was my first time experiencing Eastern Europe, and Bulgaria truly surprised me. The city is full of history to explore and learn, from its architecture to its cultural landmarks. But what stood out the most were the people — so kind, welcoming, and friendly. It made the whole experience even more enjoyable. ✨ Final thought: I really enjoyed my time here. Bulgaria has a unique charm, a rich history, and warm-hearted people. Definitely a place worth visiting.
