The Wolfhound Tour in the Southwest of Ireland was the best family vacation of our lives. Dave was so knowledgeable on the history and wildlife of this region. We had a large family group of 11 with a range of ages from 8-70. Dave was so accommodating and flexible. Our trip was well organized and so much fun! Dave knew the best places to visit. Went kayaking in the Barra Peninsula, walked through the Heeley Pass, visited Kenmare, Ring of Kerry, Dingle, Killarney National Park, Gougone Barra Forest, Muckross House and Abbey, Valentia Island, and so much more. Dave even added a stop to the Skelling Chocolate Factory for the kids and taught them Hurling and how to play Gaelic Football. This trip far exceeded our expectations and we would recommend the Wolfhound Tours to anyone wanting to experience Ireland to its fullest. Thanks Dave for the best family vacation of our lives. We are forever grateful for this experience.

Our family had the great pleasure of spending 6 days on the southwest Ireland tour with Dave, and I can honestly say he made the trip absolutely unforgettable. From the very beginning, it was clear that Dave is not just a guide, but a passionate adventurer with a wealth of knowledge about Ireland. He seamlessly wove together history, culture, agriculture, and even wildlife in a way that was both fascinating and fun. What really stood out was how he took us to places well off the beaten path — hidden gems, breathtaking views, and local treasures we never would have discovered on our own. Those experiences made the trip feel so much more personal and authentic. Beyond his knowledge, Dave was an absolute joy to be around. He was kind, thoughtful, and always made sure we were comfortable and on time without ever making us feel rushed. We had a group of 11 of all ages and he made accommodations so everyone’s needs were met. My 17 month old son adores Dave! He has a fantastic sense of humor, kept the atmosphere light and enjoyable, and even curated a perfect playlist that became the soundtrack of our trip. Our family felt so lucky to have had Dave as our guide — he truly elevated our Ireland adventure and turned it into a memory we’ll cherish forever. If you’re traveling to Ireland, I cannot recommend him highly enough! He is worth every single penny and then some!! You’re guaranteed to have some mighty craic!

Unforgettable Irish Adventure — Dave O'Connor is Magic! Our family just returned from an unforgettable trip with Wolfhound Adventure Tours, and we can’t say enough wonderful things about it! Dave O’Connor, our guide, was simply exceptional — funny, knowledgeable, kind-hearted, and absolutely hilarious. He even has the best American accent of any Irishman you’ll ever meet! Dave is truly a master of his craft. As someone who tends to be a bit of a nervous traveler on winding roads, I was so grateful for Dave’s expert driving and deep knowledge of the roads and countryside. He made me feel completely at ease, allowing me to fully relax and soak in the stunning landscapes around us. For our family of four, this trip was truly one for the record books — and Dave O’Connor and Wolfhound Adventure Tours played a huge role in making it so special. We would recommend this experience to anyone in a heartbeat!

Dave from Wolfhound turned our Ireland trip into magic — 100% recommended! Our recent trip to Ireland with my family of eleven — including two seniors with limited mobility and four kids aged 1½, 5, 11, and 13 — was nothing short of magical, and it was all thanks to Dave from Wolfhound. From the moment we met him, Dave was endlessly patient, kind, and genuinely invested in making sure every single person in our group had the trip of their dreams. Our interests were wildly different — from deep Catholic heritage to stone circles and pagan traditions, from fairies and folklore to exact dates and historical details. Dave asked us right at the start who we were and what we loved — and then somehow wove it all together into a seamless, joy-filled adventure where everyone felt seen and satisfied. Highlights of our time with Dave: • 🌿 Personalized Itinerary: From famous landmarks to hidden treasures far from the crowds, every stop felt chosen just for us. • 🏰 Immersive Storytelling: Dave invited us to imagine life 600, 800, even more than 2,000 years ago, walking in the footsteps of the ancient ones, inviting us to time travel into the past. • 🐑 Unique Access: We crossed sheep and cow pastures to reach breathtaking ruins — often with no one else in sight. • 🌞 Caring for All Ages: He balanced the needs of seniors and toddlers with the curiosity of teens and adults. • 💚 Heart & Soul of Ireland: Dave knew just where to stop and where to spend our money to positively impact the local families. The few days we spent without Dave at the start and end of our trip were fine, but the days we had with him? Unforgettable. Remarkable. Amazing. Dave’s breadth and depth of knowledge is astounding — but what sets him apart is his heart. Outside of being a phenomenal guide, he’s a genuinely good person: he cares deeply for the environment, is a devoted family man, and carries immense pride in his Irish heritage. 11 out of 10 — I’ve recommended Dave to all my family and friends who want to explore Ireland intimately, with humor, culture, and care. This was a personalized private tour, and I imagine a shared tour would feel different — but if you can, give yourself the gift of a trip with Dave. If you want an Ireland experience that’s rich, personal, and unforgettable — where you connect deeply with the land, the culture, and the stories — Dave is the one to take you there.

I typically don’t do surveys or reviews for products and services however, I wanted to make an exception and comment on a recent trip through Wolfhound Adventure Tours (6 Day West) that I took with my wife, daughter, son-in-law, and 4 great friends (as well as 7 new friends I met on the tour). I expect a tour guide to be knowledgeable, but Dave O’Connor took it to another level. Whether it be delivering a poem, or singing a soulful Irish song, Dave impressed us all with his expertise in Irish culture, folklore, history and wildlife while demonstrating a great sense of humor. He had us laughing throughout the entire trip. It’s obvious Dave puts his heart and soul into his work and is deeply devoted and passionate about Ireland, its history, wildlife, and its people. This isn’t a typical tour. It was a wonderful whirlwind of learning, hiking, pub hopping and sightseeing which allowed us to become immersed in the Irish culture. Dave surprised us by taking us to several off the beaten path hidden gems which enhanced our experience even more. Dave took time to get to know each person in the group. He Introduced us to many Irish songs and artists including Christy Moore which I now have on my playlist. Dave has a gift of playing just the right song during each part of the tour which helps you to connect to his stories. Some of my favorite stops were Cliffs of Moher, Aran Islands, the Burren, Conamara, and the town of Westport. If you really want to experience what Ireland is all about then I highly recommend this tour. You won’t be disappointed. Chieftain Mike

Just finished my 2nd Wolfhound Adventures tour. This time with a group of 12 friends. We booked the bus with Dave as our fearless leader. As expected, Dave did not disappoint. He’s fun, knowledgeable about Irish history, culture, politics and flora and fauna and full of great stories . It’s an active holiday with lovely accommodations . I highly recommend Dave and Wolfhound Adventure Tours for your next trip to Ireland.

Best of The Best here Dave O’Connor – Wolfhound Tours, Dublin Dave is hands down the best tour director we’ve ever had! He’s a master storyteller with incredible knowledge of Irish history, culture, and folklore. On our trip, he managed to keep a one-year-old and a 73-year-old equally happy — adjusting the itinerary, entertaining, and making sure everyone had an amazing time. Driver, guide, babysitter… Dave did it all with humor and heart. If you get the chance to tour Ireland with Dave, take it!
Pat R — Google review
We went on a Southwest Adventure tour in late May 2024 and it was fabulous! Everything we wished for, and more. Small, friendly, fun, interesting...I could go on. Dave shared his amazing knowledge of nature, culture, folklore, and music in such a delightful way. Just trust me and book a trip with Dave if you want to see Ireland in a beautiful, outdoorsy way without the tourist crowds. I highly recommend, and am definitely hoping to travel on another Wolfhound Adventure tour again someday!

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Portumna Castle & Gardens, located in East Galway, is a grand 17th-century fortified house with Renaissance-style towers and gates. Built in 1618 by Richard de Burgo, the 4th Earl of Clanricarde, this historic estate features Jacobean-style architecture and an impressive rectangular block structure with a tower on each corner.
This impressive structure was built in 1600's in the medieval and Renaissance style, the house is currently, closed, however the huge estate is open, and there is plenty of walks to enjoy, as well as the friary ruins (to explore) and the castle harbour is the perfect place for a picnic lunch.

So much love, time and work is put on this place. Is very saf to se signatures of some idiots on the walls inside. But is worth this. I encourage you to buy a heritage card for all monuments that are under the care of the OPW

Interesting place, with a varied fascinating history. So much hard work has gone into bringing it back to its current condition. The gardens were beautiful and also the Abbey ruins on site too. Lovely cafe on site too. Loved the cheeky ducks who clearly know this is the place for some free food from the visitors and drinking from the dogs bowl tickled us!
Graces P — Google review
The grounds and garden are beautiful. I look forward to see how the site evolves as the restorations and archeological investigations continue. I loved the addition of the tea room and art exhibit. And the gardens were absolutely fabulous. Could have spent another hour in them easily.

Such beautiful gardens and amazing history behind it. What a great place. The restaurant was stunning, and the food looked amazing. Would suggest the Chai Latte. Was perfect. The walking and riding routes are well maintained, and the staff are fantastic. Thank you so much for the hospitality.
Brian H — Google review
It is a beautiful and quiet place where you can see horses and other hoofed animals. Good for walks and wedding photography. This place is definitely worth adding to the list of places to visit in Ireland. Not far from the castle, you can see a lake or another interesting areas.

Nice place to relax with the family. We had a great time. At the same time, it may need some maintenance specifically the kitchen garden and inside the castle.

Really helpful OPW staff will explain the history of this beautifully situated castle. Cafe on site serves great, cakes. salads, lunches and its own lemonade.

Irish Workhouse Centre

Mentioned on
10 lists
Heritage museum
Sights & Landmarks
Located in Portumna, The Irish Workhouse Centre offers a powerful and moving experience that brings history to life. It is part of the Portumna Heritage Trail, which visitors can explore using a smartphone app. The workhouse was one of 163 built in Ireland between 1840 and 1853, serving as a last resort for the impoverished during a period of starvation. Visitors can take guided tours led by knowledgeable guides who bring this bleak period of Irish history to light.
What an informative visit. A part of our history that some may not be aware of. We spent a couple of hours with a guide who had a brilliant knowledge of the place. Seemingly only about 5000 visitors go there each year, which is shocking. Well worth a visit and not that expensive.
Christopher M — Google review
The tour was really interesting an it's absolutely worth going here. A really exciting story about the passt that one should know about Ireland. Our guide Mark was a great storyteller and told us many exciting but also tragic stories of the people who worked in this workhouse. The place and the tour are highly recommended. Thank you Mark.
Marie R — Google review
This is a place for learning of the past to better the future. Top man In charge of the tour. His exhaustive knowledge and an obvious deep understanding of the workhouse and its place in world history made me feel compassion for the former workers who lived, died and were interned right here. Very powerful stuff! Then as a beautiful bonus to your visit a rural museum with lots of interesting items and documents from the local area. 5 star gem of history that should continue to be preserved and most importantly respected as it is now by locals and visitors alike.
Mark S — Google review
A little out of the way but very interesting to see. You can see why so many Irish emigrated when the options were either starvation or living in a poor house.
Matt ( — Google review
We decided last minute to book a tour at the Irish Workhouse Centre. It was great insight into the workings of the workhouses including the many sad & difficult stories of those people in the workhouses, all part of our Irish history. Fiona gave us a great guided tour. Would highly recommend the tour.
Donal S — Google review
A fantastic day out – – particularly for those of us who have an interest in Irish heritage and history. The restoration work and effort put in by the people behind this destination is unbelievably good. And our tour guide- Padraic- made the day extra special. Take a bow 🙏 I can’t understand why this special place isn’t given more national publicity.
Broom C — Google review
We wanted to take in everything Portumna had to offer the day we were there, and you would be missing out if you passed this stop by. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, the site is well preserved, given the age of the place and how their funding is created. I hope in future it comes under the national trust umbrella so the restoration and tours can be more realized. Very much worth the stop!
Katlin D — Google review
Among the castles and natural beauty of Ireland, this is truly an alternative hidden gem that is worth going out of your way to check out. Our visit to the Irish Workhouse Centre made a deep impression on us that lasted well beyond the end of our vacation to Ireland. It offers a unique and authentic side of Irish history that a conventional museum cannot convey. I highly recommend making this a stop if you are in the midlands or are traveling between Dublin and the west coast. Be sure to check the website for tour times, as a guided tour is obligatory.

Portumna Forest Park

Nature & Parks
Parks
Portumna Forest Park is a picturesque destination offering various activities such as walking, cycling, and bird watching. The park features four different paths, with the loop trail being the most popular. Visitors can enjoy a bird's eye view of the forest, lake, and lakeshore from a viewing tower along the nature trail. The area is rich in history with an abbey and castle dating back hundreds of years.
Portumna Forest Park in County Galway is a beautiful, peaceful spot for a family outing. The wide woodland and grassy glades feel very serene. Kids can roam and play freely among the trees, and there’s plenty of wildlife (you might spot squirrels or deer). There are lots of trails for walking and biking throughout the park of varying lengths through the woods With so much open space, kids love zipping around or kicking a ball on the grass between trails. Visitor facilities are very family-friendly. There’s a car park right at the entrance, and yes, toilets on site In short, the park is set up to be convenient so families can focus on fun and exploring. If you head a short distance out of the park you can reach Lough Derg, but the forest itself is all trees and trails. Overall it’s a warm, welcoming place that’s hard to beat for a relaxed family day out. It feels safe and laid-back, and families really seem to love it.
Pramod A — Google review
Portumna Forest Park is a peaceful 600-hectare woodland on the shores of Lough Derg, ideal for walking, cycling, and wildlife spotting. With marked trails, lake views, and family-friendly amenities, it’s a great spot for a relaxed day out. Highlights include scenic forest paths, orienteering routes, and the chance to spot white-tailed sea eagles. The toilet facilities are very basic with room to improve greatly. Portumna Castle and marina are nearby.
Liam H — Google review
A real hidden gem! It is an absolutely beautiful forest filled with a varying amount of trees. It is not just one of these tree farms that Coilte label as a 'forest". The area is buzzing with wildlife from small birds to dear. The walking trails are in great condition and looked after and there was very little visibile rubbish while I was there. I'd definitely recommend visiting if you like the outdoors or are just looking for a place to take a long stroll.
Josh H — Google review
Really gorgeous place for a walk with lovely clear paths. Unfortunately, the bird hide at the edge of the lough is not in use as it has been toppled over by a tree.
Jo R — Google review
Lovely forest with safe trails and delicious blackberries! Nice marina with loads of ducks to entertain the kids.
Dani M — Google review
Beautiful park, loads of walking trails. Nice parking area with bathrooms and map of all the hikes. Scenery is beautiful on every walk. Also spotted a rare bird here which was cool.
Jay M — Google review
Beautiful walks to suit all distances and an abundance of wildlife. The birdsong was amazing.

I love Portumna Forest Park. There is so much to do here. Some many trails. Bird watching. Right on the shores of Lough Derg. A very nice place for a family day out, there is so much to explore. The grounds are kept extremely well and the scenery is beautiful.

Bar & grill
Luker's Bar, Restaurant & Live Music venue in Shannonbridge offers a magical experience with its stunning river views and old-world charm. The bar is adorned with memorabilia dating back to the 1800s, creating a unique atmosphere. The restaurant serves delicious meals, including traditional Irish dishes like roast beef and hearty soups. Guests can also enjoy generous portions and friendly service from the owner.
The atmosphere would have gotten a 6/5 if possible. The new part of the pub has a beautiful view of the river and is sprinkled with a touch of its history. The food was just delicious with generous portion sizes. We had the Curry, the Roastbeef and Goat’s cheese. The Old Pub is a sight to see! We got a private walk through with super interesting information directly from the owner (thanks for that again!) We will definitely go there again!
Tabitha R — Google review
I recently visited this restaurant, and it was by far the best meal I’ve had in Ireland! The food was absolutely delicious every dish was full of flavor and beautifully presented. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy a great meal. On top of that, the service was exceptional!!! I’ll definitely be coming back.
Athina A — Google review
Absolutely beautiful place, food was absolutely brilliant. Service was fastest ever❤️. Atmosphere in that pub is next level👏
Mr. R — Google review
From the moment we walked in, we knew this restaurant was something special. The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between warm and welcoming, while still feeling stylish and refined. There is an area with a very old bar from the 1700s and it was just incredible. Like the time had stopped and everything was left untouched in a working order. The view of the river shannon was just spectacular. The staff were genuinely attentive —always present when needed but never intrusive - and their knowledge of the menu made it easy to find exactly what we were craving. The food was the true highlight. Every dish was beautifully presented, fresh, and full of flavor. You can tell there's real care put into the ingredients and preparation. My favorite was the mussels, which had the perfect balance of textures and seasoning-it's the kind of plate you can't stop thinking about long after you've left. Drinks were just as impressive, with a thoughtful selection that paired seamlessly with the food. Even the small details, like the fresh bread and thoughtfully curated sides, showed how much this place values quality. Overall, this was more than just a meal-it was an experience. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just want a fantastic night out, I can't recommend this restaurant enough. I’ll definitely be coming back.
Charilaos K — Google review
What a beautiful step back in time to experience a pub from times past. Steeped history with a warm welcome. And on the other side you walk into a bright restaurant with river Shannon views. The food, service, staff and atmosphere is right up there. There’s a bonus for live music lovers as there is a venue with a festival vibe all in the riverside setting. Definitely worth checking out.
Donagh G — Google review
Very nice Bar and Restaurant. We came in on a Monday in Off-season and we were the only people. The food was really good and because we were alone we got a nice tour through the new and old bar. I can highly recommend this place

Assembled a crew for my thirtieth and sailed up the Shannon to Luker’s for our first overnight stop; they had no problem accommodating our large group and provided top class service with delicious food. Big fire roaring in the hearth down the back was the cherry on top of a lovely evening of chat and song. Five plus stars and shoutout to all the staff for putting up with us.

Monastery
Sights & Landmarks
Clonmacnoise is a ruined monastery in Ireland that was founded in the 6th century by St. Ciaran. Located next to the River Shannon, Clonmacnoise was once a thriving Christian monastery and served as a center for learning in Ireland. Today, Clonmacnoise is a beautiful and atmospheric ruin filled with stone ruins from centuries of monastic life.
If you like history, this place was lovely to visit and find out about the past. Video information to start, then lots to see and walk around. We all enjoyed the walk around the graveyard and old building, views of the river, visiting the nunnery up the road.

This is a beautiful place to visit. The grounds are peaceful and well-maintained, with plenty of historic ruins to explore. The museum was also really interesting, giving great context to the site’s history. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area.

This place is gorgeous! The history movie before you enter was a wonderful picture of what’s going on. the grounds are small and should only take you 30minutes. On a sunny day the Greene as gorgeous
Emma B — Google review
Clonmacnoise was founded in 544 AD by St. Ciarán who chose this site for its strategic location where the River Shannon meets ancient east–west land routes. From these humble beginnings, it flourished into a major center of religion, learning, craftsmanship, and trade, attracting scholars, pilgrims, and kings from across Ireland and beyond. At its height between the 7th and 12th centuries, Clonmacnoise was home to a thriving monastic community. Here, monks produced illuminated manuscripts, crafted exquisite metalwork, and carved some of Ireland’s finest high crosses. The Cross of the Scriptures, a masterpiece of early medieval stone carving, stands as a testament to the skill and faith of its creators. The site also features two round towers, several churches spanning centuries, and over 700 carved grave slabs—each telling part of Clonmacnoise’s story.

Passionate and lovely people! We arrived a little after the tour started, but the tour guy immediately welcomed us and made a little résumé of what we missed!!! He was very passionate and nice, answered some questions along the way too! We did arrive in the morning, so there weren't a lot of people around, which was perfect to explore the grounds in peace.
Gab's — Google review
Well-preserved structure of a monastic city The story of the place is fascinating and very interesting You can start with a film (It lasts about 25 minutes) with an explanation of the structure and the ruins (from the beginning to the modern time) Then you can visit the exhibition: the original high crosses are in here Now you're ready to see the monastic site. Nun's church is about 500 meters from the modern graveyard. There are not indication to reach it. So you can find the whispering arch at the entrance

Castles
Athlone Castle is a 13th-century fortress situated by the River Shannon and features eight interactive exhibition rooms with chronological themes. The castle showcases modern and engaging displays that depict the town's turbulent history and its evolution through time. The highlight of the castle is Siege Experience, which takes place in a circular panoramic gallery. The Normans built this castle in 1210 after asserting their power over Athlone's ancient river ford, which played an essential role as a crossroad on the Shannon.
Athlone Castle is stunning. Incredible views. The staff were so nice and helpful. We were very lucky weather wise and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Great central location. The views from the castle of the city is nice. The price is a few euros and worthy of the material on display. For children it is good as there is alot to see. Well worth a look
Damien S — Google review
With the staff being well informed about both Irish and Scottish history, proved the information centre to be really informative. As a traveler, it’s always good to find recommendations of local places that Google may not tell you about. This tourism centre was easy to find and it’s part of the Adamson Castle. You are greeted warmly by friendly staff and they’ll ask you a little bit about why you’re visiting, they can give you the right information as long as you ask. If you didn’t know, they also have self-guided tours inside the Athlone Tourist Information Centre, if you’re trying to waste a little extra time for your flight, also assuming you’re interested in seeing the remains of the Adamson Castle that was built in the 12th century.
Tabitha-Robyn F — Google review
This was nothing like we expected. The castle looked cool from the outside but it was essentially made into a modern “museum”, it was not a castle tour. Of our 10 days in Ireland so far, this is the first thing we did that we felt was a waste of time and money.

Very interesting place, small museum, I set 4 stars, just because of several rooms and attentions have been closed, and also in was not for free as others do in during pandemic, overall I really recommend to visit, it can be also not better then Bunratty castle, but anyway good enough

Nature & Parks
Glendeer Pet Farm, an award-winning open farm in County Dublin, Ireland, offers a safe and carefree environment for children of all ages. The six-acre farm run by the OConnell family features a wide variety of animals including horses, ponies, pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, chickens, ducks and more. Visitors can enjoy interacting with the animals and exploring the additional six acres recently opened for nature walks through fields and historic paths.
Wonderful Day at Glendeer Pet Farm! We visited Glendeer Pet Farm today with our son, and it was an absolutely delightful experience. He had so much fun feeding the animals and exploring the beautiful fairy walkway. The toddler playroom was definitely the highlight for him — he didn't want to leave! The entire place is well-maintained and thoughtfully designed for families. There are clean toilets, a convenient hand-washing area, and a baby diaper changing station, which made the visit very comfortable. The on-site café was a nice bonus with good food and drinks. The staff were all incredibly kind and helpful, adding to the warm, welcoming atmosphere. With such a large area to explore and so many engaging activities, it’s a perfect day out for families with young children. Highly recommend — we’ll definitely be back!

Brilliant day out for families/groups with kids up to probably 12 years of age. Lots to do, we easily spent three hours there today until closing time. Tickets and gift shop were good value. Loads of space to run around and a fantastic playground with an obstacle course (two sides for racing against each other). If it's raining heavily there is also plenty of covered areas including a big sand pit with lots of toys. The staff were very helpful. The 1950's Traditional Irish cottage is gorgeous. We'll be back! 🙂
Leeanne B — Google review
It is a beautifully maintained place with a wide variety of animals. Visitors have the opportunity to feed and pet them in a clean and well-organised environment. I truly enjoyed the experience and would highly recommend it.
Melinda M — Google review
Very nice farm but much smaller than we thought. Most animals nice. Happy to see babies of different species. I just wish staff didn't let a ton of small children pick up multiple animals, seemed very dangerous. I also didn't like that we bought 5 tickets but only received 3 bags of animal food.

We had a great day at Glendeer. The animals are so well cared for. Very friendly staff. We had a nice picnic, a great day out.

Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre

Mentioned on
1 list
Visitor center
The Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre showcases the impressive Iron Age bog road, dating back to 148 BC. The preserved 18m oak track is displayed in a humidified hall, offering insight into the unique flora and fauna of the bog as well as preservation methods. Visitors can enjoy an informative tour and a lovely 5km walk around the site.
During our visit the visitor centre was closed, however the 10 km's of walkable trackway winding the bog, was so peaceful, and tranquil, definitely a must when in the area.
V H — Google review
Wonderful little museum with very friendly and knowledgeable staff. The information provided by both staff and video is excellent. The trackway is very well displayed and the boardwalk outside across the bog is lovely. Will definitely be back. The museum is free to visit.
Catherine C — Google review
Very informative, our guide had lots of information to share. The film before the tour was a great look back into the dig. No tickets required.
Marvin W — Google review
Absolutely a Gem! An amazing artefact that deserves protection at all costs. The staff are incredible—dedicated and doing their utmost to preserve the Trackway. The guide was both passionate and highly knowledgeable, making the experience even more memorable. Unfortunately, the site is severely underfunded, and as a result, the Trackway is beginning to dry out. If no action is taken, it may eventually deteriorate beyond repair. I believe it might be necessary to undergo the full preservation process again, possibly in Portsmouth, given their expertise with the Mary Rose—which still looks fantastic. Ideally, the Trackway should be housed under glass to create a more controlled environment. It’s disheartening that, because the site is off the main tourist trail, the OPW seems to show little interest. There’s barely any advertising, and even less effort toward proper preservation—despite the fact that doing so would likely cost less than Dublin’s infamous “bike shed.” Shame.
Magda J — Google review
We went as part of Heritage week for a slug and snail activity. We then went to see the trackway. We had an expert guide that made it so accessible and interesting for children! Thank you.

A hidden gem, after watching Oíche Shamhna: An Ancient Mystery on Sunday in which the Corlea Trackway visitor centre was featured we knew a visit was needed to see this wonderful facility, The staff were all very friendly and welcoming with our guide Noel who was very knowledgeable and passionate, and funny explaining the history in a very understandable way Thank you. After the film show and seeing the Trackway we went for a walk around a very atmospheric bog. I would highly recommend a visit at any age.
Eileen — Google review
A hidden gem and definitely worth the visit. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. It was amazing hearing through their enthusiasm about the conservation project and the different theories on why the trackway was built 148 BC. Stunning to be witness of such amazing craftsmanship. And then a lovely walk in the wetlands and learning about the restoration of the bogs.

Didn't check properly and it was closed but a lovely lady came out and opened up as she said because I had visited So many things to see that I couldn't put pictures of everything, plus some people will take interest in different things (there's so many subjects covered) 8 euro in and can spend as long as you want and she came in and out to see if I wanted to know anything and have a chat Super recommended as not far from Athlone and get to see so much Irish history

Top class. Hospitality & hosts couldn't have been better. Wish you continued success and hope the penny farthing investment pays off

Absolute hidden gem. It's unbelievable the amount of things to see and delight in. A trip to the past, but one that doesn't need a Delorean. Cannot recommend this enough for fans of Irish history and Folk history. They don't take card to buy tickets, so bring cash or book online (can do it when you get there)

This is one of Ireland best kept secret if you like looking into history this is the place for you also if you collect we turn up and charlie was amazing he had been making this collection for 50 years his knowledge was excellent the things he told us .when we was there the local school children turn up as there teacher was retiring there were so friendly and welcoming made us feel so good this is one of my favourite stop off if your ever in Ireland go

I would highly recommend a visit to this very special museum. The amount of exhibits and the memories they brought back were worth three times the entry fee. Charlie was our very informed and very interesting host with lots of stories to tell about the items on display. Myself and my friends thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Derryglad

This is a real gem of a place and an absolute delight. Thoroughly enjoyed my visit. I was part of a group who 'oohed' and 'awed' and reminisced and loved their nostalgic trip down memory lane. Highly recommend for those who remember first hand the delights on view to those who are too young but will love the their families reactions to a trip into yesteryear.
Marion N — Google review
We called Charlie and Bridie if we could come and see their museum. They opened the doors for us even though we came along when it was not officially open. The two of them are so lovely and explain to you everything you wanna know about the wonderful objects which have been collected over the years. I felt like I was on a journey back in time. I like nostalgia so I love places where you can dream away in phantasies about how evereything must have been in former times. We liked the fact that it was such a rural area and a lot of stuff which has been typical for rural areas. I really recommend to see that place and meet that lovely couple. Plan at least on hour for your stay. There is so much to see and you can sense how much love they have given into the collecting and the arrangements of the objects....

Very nice walk, well lit. If pushed, I'd gripe the users (adults) that play soccer tend to be horrible and park on paths between the carpark (sic) and the courts, and regularly get stuck on the grass, chewing it up and ruining it. (Yes there are photos and videos online) but you cant speak to them about it, as they gang up and get very intimidating and vocal.

Beautiful park in Longford! Clean cosy, lots old trees, little lakes and river. There are a lot of different birds, they sing and these songs are like in paradise! There are many benches and it is a great idea to put a lot of wooden benches in the park, they are conducive to a pleasant rest and relaxation in nature. One of the best park in Ireland!☘️

Roscommon Castle

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Situated on a rocky hill overlooking the town and surrounding countryside, Roscommon Castle is an impressive 13th-century Norman fortress built by Robert de Ufford. Once a stronghold for the de Ufford family, it later passed through the hands of various noble families. Today, the castle lies in ruins but remains a magnificent and imposing structure that sparks imagination.
An interesting ruin next to a nice town park. Dog friendly, we strolled the park first and then walked around the castle. A great afternoon!

We visited Roscommon Castle on our way back from Westport. It's a great place to take a break from the road and stretch your legs. It's free to enter and the views from the castle towers are stunning.

What a glorious sight. The history wrapped in this castle is uncomprehensible. Being able to walk, touch, climb the walls was an honour. It felt so calming to stand within the castle grounds. The park surrounding the castle was excellent with play equipment and walking tracks. Just beautiful.

A great historical place around Roscommon to go soak a bit of history, it is family friendly, has a lovely park for kids and a fitness playground. Gets very windy in the fall though so wear an extra layer. Also free tp visit.
Kid M — Google review
Roscommon Castle is a striking medieval ruin built around 1269. It sits beside a pleasant town park in Roscommon and gives you free access no admission fee, no strict schedule. The grounds are well-kept: walking paths, a pond, children’s play area nearby and plenty of picnic space. The ruin itself is evocative: high curtain walls, D-shaped towers, echoes of battles and architectural innovation from centuries past. What you should know: parts of the castle are not accessible (for safety), and if you want guided tours that may only be available at certain times. It’s great for a contemplative or family outing, less so if you expect full interactive exhibits. Overall: highly recommended for history lovers or a laid-back stop on a drive.

Beautiful ruins of a once beautiful community I am sure. So peaceful to walk around and imagine people going about their daily duties.

Such a fabulous place to visit. The park is kept in such excellent condition. The castle itself is very well maintained and I'm delighted to see that it's an active protected home for swifts in aid of their conservation. I love that it's accessible for mobility aids and that it's open to view without having to go to a visitor centre or book a tour.

The National Famine Museum, Strokestown Park

The National Famine Museum, Strokestown Park, offers guided tours of a Georgian Palladian mansion, walled garden, and museum focusing on the 1840s famine. The mansion was commissioned in the early 18th century and is surrounded by gardens that reflect the estate's original wealth. The museum is well-designed and includes a memorial center. Visitors can take guided tours or explore independently with amenities such as a cafe/restaurant, souvenir section, and parking facilities available.
Lovely house and grounds. Really interesting to learn about the story zbout the famine and the walk to Dublin. The cafe was excellent and staff throughout the establishment were really helpful and knowledgeable. Would highly recommend a visit
Pat M — Google review
There are 2 parts of this museum. One is Famine museum and the other is the McMahon house. We did guided tour of the house, which was super interesting and fun. Our guide was excellent with humour and full of information. The museum consists of what McMahon contributed to farmers’ emigration to Canada during the famine. It is horrible to learn what they did to these poor people, walked all the way from Stroketown to Dublin then put on the ship that was used for livestock transport. Not only losing their life but lived in the worst condition ever, and eventually dead from disease or hunger… not achieved better life that they hoped for… Then, when the sole heir of McMahon sold the mansion to the local businessman, he realised how important this estate and the records that they kept is to Irish history, and turned into the museum. The mansion was well kept and shows the wealth that they lived, although it declined eventually. Learning these whole contradictory lives.. was just fascinating. Definitely worth to visit.
J P — Google review
The National Famine Museum near Longford is a powerful place to visit. It’s not a flashy, high-tech attraction; it’s a serious, thoughtful deep-dive into the darkest chapter of Irish history. The museum sits on the Strokestown Park estate, where original famine-era documents were discovered, and that gives the experience a real sense of authenticity. Walking through the rooms, you move between personal stories of tenants, eviction accounts, letters, and records that show exactly how the famine unfolded for ordinary families. It’s heavy, emotional material, but presented in a way that’s respectful rather than sensational. Most of the museum is text-based, so you’ll be reading a lot. That can feel slow compared to modern interactive museums, but the content is strong enough to carry it. Some parts are dimly lit, which a few visitors find frustrating, but the atmosphere suits the subject. The audio guide helps bring everything together and adds context you’d miss otherwise. The best part is how it connects national history with individual human lives. You don’t just learn facts; you feel the impact. If you’re visiting Longford or nearby, it’s well worth the trip. You’ll leave quieter, more reflective, and with a deeper understanding of Ireland’s past.
Jack L — Google review
The Famine Museum offers a good insight into history and is worth a visit. However, I found that the walled garden was not well maintained, which was disappointing. Entry is €14 per adult, which feels a bit steep given the experience, but okay overall.
Mariana B — Google review
Very enjoyable. Excellent food at restaurant Dog Friendly Walled Garden is excellent, has potential ( could benefit from an investment and some more full time gardeners), better than Kylomore Abbey. Guided tour of the house is good for those interested in Georgian architecture.
Bren K — Google review
We took the guided tour at the National Famine Museum, and it was very well presented. The exhibits are informative and moving, offering a real insight into this important part of history. A deeply impactful and memorable visit — highly recommended.

I love bringing my clients to the National Famine museum in Strokestown. Great exhibits on the History of the Potatoe Famine in Ireland and stories about the people effected at this cruel time in our History. My clients enjoyed the visit but is a sad time in our history so you won't come out feeling full of cheer.

Having visited Ballinamore for a number of years since a child, this was my 1st time going here with my children. I wasn't sure what to expect but I need not of worried. This place is really good and the gentleman who show us around is a real asset to the place. He showed us everything and gave such great detailed information about things. He explained that the owner would be able to give more details but to be honest his knowledge was fantastic. Our son who is 5yrs old loved it. He was asking so many questions & each was answered. This place is great for the young & the old. We were a family of 4 & this place is well worth a visit. We already have 2 extra people to visit with us again in the near future. A real hidden Leitrim gem.

What an amazing place - so many cool and interesting pieces! We spent two and a half hours with Eugene as he shared his incredible knowledge of the collection with us. He's a very funny guy and had us laughing the whole time. Great value for money. The place was spotlessly clean. The cars/truck in particular were mint. Arigna Mining Experience

Nestled in the scenic hills above Lough Allen, the Arigna Mining Experience offers a captivating glimpse into Ireland's coal mining history, which spanned from the 1600s to 1990. This unique attraction features an immersive 50-minute underground tour that takes visitors 400 meters down to the coal face, complete with a thrilling simulated mini-explosion. Led by former miners who share their firsthand experiences of the challenging working conditions and dangers faced underground, this tour is both educational and engaging.
Definitely worth a visit. Tour was very informative and our guide was very friendly. Interesting to see how folks operated the mines back in the day. The gift shop had a nice selection of items for sale. The food was pretty decent too and reasonable value. Not far from Carrick-on-Shannon. If you wanted to make a day of it I'd recommend doing the The Shed Distillery afterwards and then maybe the boardwalk or a cruise in the Shannon 😎

Gerry was the guide during our visit, & what a guide he was. As a miner in this pit until it closed, he was informative & could tell afew funny stories along the way. He explained about how the equipment worked & how the men would have to position themselves to work safely. He & my dad, who also worked in the pits as a teenager, were able to compare notes, albeit different types of pit. This is probably the most engaging mining experience I've visited. There is an area of photos & old equioment/tools as well as a short video to help explain the mining jobs of the men and a nice clean cafe. I would highly recommend a visit here, worth the money. Added bonus, spectacular views of Lough Allen & the valley, especially when the sun is shining.
Deb H — Google review
If you've got a weekend in Leitrim/Roscommon, this is worth the visit. Our guide was an ex-miner. His accent was tough for me (from Dublin) so I'd be interested to know if foreign tourists think similarly. The mine itself was pretty interesting, a bit chilly so a fleece/jumper would be recommended, and there's a small space for extra reading & a video. The cafe is ok with a small gift shop. There's plenty of parking & there's gorgeous views of Lough Allen. The driving route to Arigna is on some tiny, narrow country roads.
John K — Google review
Really great experience, history of the mines was so interesting, our guide Eamon was lovely to chat to and hear his tales of the mines, its great the guides are ex mine workers to hear first hand stories. The cafe was so relaxed and lovely food, the staff were so welcoming and friendly, highly recommend a trip to the mines.

Arigna Mining Experience - An amazing tour into the history of Irish coal mining! A tour with former miners reveals 400 years of history at Arigna mines. In 1958, local coal powered the ESB power station, which closed in 1990. The miners had a grueling job: working on their knees in narrow 45cm faces, in dust and darkness. Awesome experience. I definitely recommend visiting!
Alexander S — Google review
Maurice an ex-miner did a private tour with us. He provided great explanations but also stories of the time he was digging coal. Great visit.
Nath C — Google review
My wife and I toured the Arigna mine in May 2025. There was just the two of us and of course our guide. I think his name was Ian, but can't remember for sure <sorry>. It was fascinating to hear the stories of the brave people working in the mines. It was hard and dirty work to say the least. Besides the potential inherent danger, we were told the vein of coal they would try to extract was only 22 inches thick. Well worth the time to see how some people had to earn a living. There is a small gift shop and cafe if you're hungry for something quick. There is also a nice view of the surrounding area in the lunch area if you stay for something to eat.

Boyle Abbey

Heritage building
Sights & Landmarks
Boyle Abbey is the remains of a Cistercian monastery founded in 1218 and is now a popular tourist attraction. Situated in Boyle, it stands at the point where lowland valleys transition into the Curlew Mountains. The abbey was founded by monks from Mellifont Abbey and was one of the most powerful early Cistercian foundations in Ireland. Despite suffering devastation during Cromwellian occupation, it remains an impressive historic site.
Definitely a place to visit a lot of history available and is probably the best Abbey I've seen in the best condition for how old it is. You also get a sense of peacefulness while you sit and take it all in. Lovely.

What a stunning monastery! Just 5 euro entrance and you travel back to 12th century. Gold for photography as well. They do excursions as well at 12 o'clock. Parking on street, on Monday it was empty.

Boyle Abbey is one of the best kept Abbeys in Ireland... worth a visit, bring a picnic and enjoy. Also, helpful /friendly staff
Hugh K — Google review
This was our second attempt to visit — the first time we arrived a little too late and missed the opening hours. My advice: leave yourself plenty of time. A quick walk-through might take under an hour, but if you’re curious, you can easily spend longer. We wandered around searching for all the stonemason marks on the walls with the “cheat sheet” provided by our guide, Tomás, and even got excited thinking we’d spotted an extra one not on the list! Our guide was fantastic — knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate. He had a gift for weaving history and modern context together so the ruins came alive. We learned how construction stretched over such a long time that the styles and columns changed along the way, about rebellious monks, and about the Whispering Arch that once stood like a doorway before being destroyed. The details were incredible: carvings on the columns showing monks entwined in vines, telling symbolic stories in stone. Above, we spotted a sparrowhawk sculpture standing proud on top of one of the columns — another layer of character to the abbey’s remains. Tomás also explained that the abbey once had a lavabo, just like the famous one at Mellifont Abbey, but it was destroyed in the 1800s when the site was converted into a house. A real loss, as it must have been stunning. The stories gave the place such personality — like the monks who stubbornly refused to use Latin at Mass, preferring Irish instead, or how they ignored the Pope’s instruction to visit Rome once a year. Even when he relaxed the rule to every four years, they still didn’t turn up for 30 years! A very Irish sort of defiance, and it made us laugh. Practical notes: Boyle Abbey is an OPW Heritage site, so if you have an OPW card you can visit for free. Parking is on-street and free as well — not many spaces, but when we visited it wasn’t busy, so we had no issues. As it started to rain, Tomás even handed us an extra umbrella to keep us dry — a small but very thoughtful touch that made the experience even more enjoyable. Boyle Abbey is more than stone walls — it’s full of stories, hidden details, and atmosphere. With a guide like Tomás, it’s unforgettable. Absolutely worth a visit if you’re in Roscommon — a must-see site that brings Irish medieval history vividly to life.

Great lads at the information desk who gave some great knowledge and history of the place. Shame you can't walk all the way round the fronts of the abbey, but still great to see all the history

We arrived in the rain, but... They have a section of it covered in Glass, it was lovely to sit in this huge old structure and quietly listen to the rain hitting the glass roof!

Fabulous architecture and history dating back to the 1300s. It's so well kept and the room inside with a description of the history is interesting. The tour guide at the ticket office was very friendly and knowledgeable, offering up information about the abbey and the history behind it. He was enthusiastic but not over the top, we enjoyed chatting with him. Would definitely recommend a visit!

Visited on a Thursday. Only a few other people were here. The guide who sold us the tickets told us a bit about the abby and was very nice. In general a very nice kept place - worth a visit, when you‘re near.

Nestled within the Cuilcagh Mountain Park, just 3km south of Blacklion, Cavan Burren Park is a captivating megalithic site with a rich history. Established in 2014, this park boasts ancient wonders such as the Giant's Grave wedge tomb from 2500 BC and a promontory fort dating back to 500 BC.
Fantastic place for kids and adults alike. My kids 3 & 6 loved it and walked the full purple route of about 4.5km. For adults there's the history and scenery, and the great outdoors. The kids loved following the arrows and the timber walkways were a big hit. I was really surprised with the Cavan Burren. I had heard it was good but this really far surpassed all expectations. Has toilets and a picnic area at the visitor centre which also contains lots of info. I will definitely be back and will bring others with me. West Cavan is a real gem.

A very well maintained park with many trails that can be done all of them in about 1h30-2h (about 5-6Km). The orange and purple trails are not suitable for wheelchairs. The dogs loved it!

Great find. All trails labelled and an absolutely fascinating place. Had the place to ourselves, probably on account if the weather. Little all weather free visitor centre. Benches around the trails to rest / look at the views. Information boards excellent.

Amazing park, we had the pleasure to meet on a sunny day! A lot of neolithic history! The park has different trails, do all of them if you can, because you can be surprised at any moment. Most spots have QR code so you can get deeper in the explanations. Highly recommended!

Graune Pet Farm and Play Centre is a great place to spend an afternoon with your family. The indoor play area is huge and has lots of fun activities for the kids, while the outdoor areas are perfect for running around and enjoying the fresh air. The staff are friendly and helpful, and will always make sure that your children have a blast!
Fantastic, really big place. From the entrance you go left the farm and right to the play centre. Lots of animals to see, and you get feeding bags, which is a lot of fun for kids. There is a Gruffalo walk around the farm with plenty of signs for the kids to interact with.

We had a fabulous day at the farm today! Kids absolutely loved it, loads for them to do. The indoor soft play area is huge! Loads of friendly animals that the kids could feed and interact with. A huge array of outdoor toys and playgrounds aswell, just a really fun packed day. The staff are lovely and friendly. Food was only OK but its not overpriced either so it does the job. All in all its a fabulous day out and we'll definitely be back soon!

We loved it! The animals are adorable and extremely well cared for. At the entrance, they gave us a small bag of food for the animals – the kids went wild with excitement! We were welcomed by the lovely Emma – she was amazing! We were the first to arrive, and she quickly let the kids hold a bunny and kindly answered our questions about some of the birds. The outdoor area is incredible and really well designed, full of fun activities for the little ones. We had a lovely lunch, once again looked after by the sweet Emma, always cheerful! Overall, it was an amazing experience and one we’ll definitely repeat. The kids will surely be asleep early tonight! Thank you so much, Emma, for your kindness and professionalism! I highly recommend this place for families, schools, and anyone with children.

Just had the best birthday for my daughter here! The staff was kind, and caring and compassionate, with wonderful customer service for a party of 17 kids! The facility was clean! The rates were well worth the experience! The food was delicious and the farm animals were amazing! With inside soft play and outside playgrounds, slides, go carts and sand play rooms for rainy dismal days..... Overall, I'd give them 10 stars! I highly recommend this beautiful slice for your child's big day! We will definitely be going back! Thank you for helping my little girl have such an amazing birthday! 💜 Kind regards the Atmores

I have lived in Ballyhaunis in the last 8yrs and I used to think there was nothing we could do around here asides walk in the park. It's my first time visiting this farm and it is such a lovely place. Also a brilliant space to host birthday party for kids. My kids loved it and have asked to go back again. The staff are also pleasant. I highly recommend.

A big Surprise I’m happy to say. I looked at Graune pet farm’s web site and wasn’t looking forward to the visit that my wife promised our 6 year old going by the web page photos. It’s a bit out of the way but worth the journey. It has large parking areas and easy access for those with strollers or wheelchair’s. It was €8 for each adult and €12 for the child but family rates are available. From the get go we got greeted by an adorable puppy in a stable with rabbits and kittens. A walk around the farm and your surrounded by hundreds of chicken loads of goats, lamas, emu and many other farmyard friends. All the animals seemed in good health and happy and their living areas looked clean and tidy all with food and water. The kids have lovely play areas outside including tyre swings and zip lines. Inside the indoor play soft play area is huge and has pool tables and air hockey to kill some time while your little one is on an adventure. It also has a large restaurant area although we didn’t eat here it looked and smelled lovely. It a lovely well run place clean and tidy with friendly staff. The little extras like “walking on water” only cost €3 and was well worth it. At first I was only going to give it four stars but thinking about it I don’t see how they could make it better for what you pay and I would highly recommend a visit. We spent 3 hours here and enjoyed every minute.

Eagles Flying in Ballymote, Sligo, is a must-visit destination for wildlife lovers and anyone fascinated by birds of prey. This sanctuary is home to an impressive array of owls, hawks, and majestic eagles. Visitors can enjoy interactive flight demonstrations that showcase the incredible abilities of these magnificent creatures. The dedicated staff are passionate about educating guests on the importance of raptors while ensuring a fun experience for all ages.
We’ve just had the most incredible experience here!! I haven’t left the car park yet as I just wanted to share this and acknowledge how special It’s been for us!! I phoned earlier today indicating we’d pop in, and when we arrived we had a personalised tour of the place with the most knowledgeable Jenny & Evie, who know the animals so well and are able to inform and entertain both kids and adults alike! We saw so many different types of birds, ferrets (aka Pole Cats), a beautiful and gentle skunk, a fallow deer that loves to headbut the fence but gently accepts some treats, a flurry of bunnies, pigs, mice, Guinea pigs, some macaws, and so many more beautiful and much loved animal friends!! My three kids loved it and felt so part of the tour, and I as the adult was loving every minute of it too! Oh and the ‘piece de resistance’ was being led into a small stone shed to be greeted by a very well dressed and jolly ‘Santa’, and after some fun banter the kids got to hold a Barn owl and have their picture taken with Santa!! Then to be given a gift from his sack (of yummy chocolates, that they’re happily eating as I write this incredibly deserved review!!). I heartily recommend this place for the young and old, nature lovers and others. It’s a joy to be reminded of how special places like this still exist. Let’s all support them so they can continue! Thank you again!!

Fantastic experience that I'd recommend to everyone. We decided to go here on the way back to Knock airport and it proved to be a great decision. The staff are fantastic and really get their love and passion for the animals across. As it was out of season there were only 6 of us visiting for this 2 hour session so it was a real personal experience. As if having Eagles and Owls flying and landing on your arm wasn't amazing enough there's an array of other animals to get to see and pet from ferrets and rabbits to giant pigs and even a skunk. Absolutely fantastic time had.

Staff were very friendly. Price was very good I thought €54 for 2 adults and 2 kids over 10. Animals very well cared for and very friendly, so obviously well looked after. It was lovely to hear that they nurse injured animals back to health and release those able to be released. Kids loved the place and the 2 hours flew by. A++++

We had a great experience visiting the raptor sanctuary. Great demonstration of the flying birds of prey as well as a fun petting zoo and other rehabilitated animals on the grounds. They're doing great work and it's satisfying to know that you're helping to fund a good cause while enjoying your visit.

What a place! A wonderful experience, worth every cent! You can feel that the birds and all the other animals are in such good care. The two ladies who showed us the place were amazing, very friendly and helpful. Despite the miserable weather they made sure we had a great time. They even got some umbrellas for us to use during the tour and the show! I learned a lot about the animals and I highly recommend this place!
Ana C — Google review
We came here back in 2017 and loved it. So as we decided to come back and do it again. This time was even better. We were the only ones there. The girls were brilliant, they talked as if the place was full. They clearly love the animals and love what they do. Thanks again for a great day. It cost €20 each, well worth it. 😊

This place is a 'must go to' for animal lovers. To see a mix of rescued animals, for those wanting to learn more about different species of birds, a family day out, a hands on experience, lots of laughs, a warm welcome and all in a professional and relaxed environment... this is definitely the place to go. Thank you so much to all the staff and in particular to the two wonderful handlers.5*

Belleek Pottery Ltd, established in 1857, is located in a grand Georgian-style building near Belleek's main bridge. The pottery is renowned for its exquisite Parian china and delicate basketware, which can be purchased at the on-site shop. Guided tours of the factory are available every half-hour on weekdays and weekends during the summer. Visitors can witness the skilled artisans creating unique pieces using traditional methods passed down through generations.
Lovely shop and museum. It was great to see all their history. We also very much enjoyed the café. The brownie was amazing, and so was the coffee. Beautiful atmosphere and a great touch to be using their own pottery at the cafe. The staff were very friendly and helpful!

“I Came for a Souvenir, Left Wanting to Redecorate My Entire House.” Belleek Pottery is dangerous… in the best way. You walk in thinking, “I’ll just browse,” and suddenly you’re mentally redesigning your kitchen to match that gorgeous teapot. The tour was like watching art come to life — these artisans are so skilled, I started questioning my own ability to even fold a fitted sheet. The attention to detail is unreal, and the history behind the pottery makes each piece feel extra special. The shop at the end? Let’s just say my luggage is now 10 lbs heavier and I have zero regrets. Highly recommend — just bring some self-control (or don’t, it’s worth it).

Had a "factory" tour of Belleek pottery today. Fascinating place - everything is hand made, no machines! We weren't allowed to take pictures inside but it was amazing. They have been in business at this location for 168 years and it's the kind of place that generations of families work here. About 70 artisans work here and they have EVERY master mold from every design ever made. They could replicate any pottery they've ever made in their entire history. About 65% of their pottery is sold to North America! I, of course, had to buy... So glad they offer shipping!
Kat S — Google review
From the perspective of a late 30s, hairy, tattooed man, I grew up hearing about grandma’s Belleek collection. I brought my mom to Ireland in May and we did the tour. I was the youngest person on the tour and I could have spent a whole day watching everyone at their craft. The whole process is fascinating and the skill is so impressive. The end product is really something special. This place is really worth a visit and they also have an online store if you can’t get there

Glencar Waterfall is a captivating natural wonder located in County Leitrim, just a short drive from Bundoran. This 50-ft tiered waterfall is situated at Glencar Lough and has inspired poets and artists for centuries, including William Butler Yeats. The surrounding landscapes are breathtaking, making it a popular destination for families and groups from around the world. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil sounds of cascading water as they approach the picturesque cascade nestled amidst lush greenery.
A truly beautiful site. Easy-to-walk trail (some stairs). The falls and stream are picturesque and calming. In the spring flowers on the grasses and trees were plentiful and fragrant. Worth the drive. As a bonus, the lambs below the parking lot were entertaining.

Beautiful location with a lake on one side, at the carpark, and then a small walk uphill through a canopy of trees to the gorgeous waterfall. Two pathways available to reach the waterfall, both have steps about 1/2 ways up but also stopping areas and seats on approach to sit and enjoy the sounds and views. Paved pathways in place but may become slippy with rain. Some light to moderate exertion required to reach the top and loop back around - not suitable for buggies etc. lovely cafe with information point, bathrooms, play area (outside), and small crafts at the entrance to the walk also. Parking is substantial but due to popularity it may require a little time to get a spot, but generally appears to have a steady turnover of spaces available. Lovely ice-cream van onsite in carpark also, (seasonal) - well worth a stop for a quick chat and nibble if inclined. Overall - a must see!

Absolutely beautiful Waterfall. It is really high and the sound of the water falling is so peaceful. You can go up the steps at the side of the waterfall just to watch the water fall at such a great height. Really worth a visit and no charge to visit it.

Glencar Waterfall is a stunning natural feature located in County Leitrim, Ireland. It is nestled in the picturesque Glencar Valley, near the village of Glencar, and is part of the Glencar Lake area. The waterfall is known for its beauty, especially during the wetter months, when it cascades down from a height of about 15 meters (49 feet) into a serene pool below. The area around the waterfall is lush and wooded, making it a great spot for nature walks and photography. The waterfall gained additional fame when it was mentioned in W.B. Yeats' poem The Stolen Child, adding to its cultural significance.

A fabulous 6km loop walk. Start off with a steep hike to the tomb which is so impressive, with amazing 360 views and great mountain spotting signage. Then work your way down the trail on the other side and descend through steep forest with the help of a railway sleeper staircase and finally finish off along forest trails overlooking the Standhill surf.

A strenuous walk. I parked the car in Sligo rugby football club (a honest box is kept). Ver well maintained trail, and the steps were stepper. Plenty of benches along the trail to take rest. The trail leads to Queen Maeve's cairn. An absolutely gorgeous 360° view from the summit. Spent nearly 4 hours. After walk went to Strandhill beach and enjoyed the rest of evening. Perfect for a day trip with family.
Arun N — Google review
I've done this walk a few times. However, this time a bit differently with the newly added path around the Sligo side of the mountain. I recommend starting at the Sligo side car park and going up to the top and back down the Strandhill side through the forest. Then take the loop around back to the car park. This may be best for those, like me, who aren't very fit. I had my legs under me for the strenuous bit with loose rock and the loop is pretty easy on tired legs. Starting on Strandhill side, up and over, then around would be the same. It took me about two hours with lots of stops for photos. There is a nice little crepe and snack cart in the car park but not open all the time.

Nice hicking. Good for groups and families. Nice wonderful view. Excellent spot for photographers. Good exercise. It would take 3 hours approx. Car parking and coffee placed are available. Don't miss stand and read about sacred spot of Meabh's cairn. You can not stand on or climb or take stone from there. If you want to see a photo of this place from above, I have some drony photos of there.

Drumcliffe Church & W. B Yeat's Grave is located in the foothills of Benbulben, where the poet WB Yeats is buried alongside his youthful bride, Georgie Hyde-Lee. The church has an interesting history, and visitors can read Yeats' famous epithet on his grave. Additionally, there are craft shops for local goods nearby and the opportunity to visit Glencar Waterfall as well.
Stop. Just stop. It’s amazing to see the grave of W.B. Yeats. All those college English courses? Worth it. He is one of the best poets of all time. I don’t care who you are, you’ll be moved by it. It’s beautiful. The church is just lovely and there is a gift shop with a sweet little cafe. “No Second Troy” is one of my favorite poems and to see where’s he’s laid to rest is amazing. The cemetery itself is beautiful. One of the oldest Celtic Crosses in Ireland is there. Trust me. You’ll be glad you stopped.

Had a wonderful and relaxing time. I love Yeats and I wanted to pay my respects while I was here in Ireland. I wasn’t originally planning a tour, I was going to just visit the grave, read a bit, and have a coffee. I met James who told me a little about the history of the church and gave me a audio tour to listen to. It’s amazing how much history is packed into this place. Not only that but the church itself is quite nice and just off in the distance there is a great view of Benbulbin. I definitely recommend this place to anyone who loves Irish history and culture and anyone who loves Yeats.

The staff was friendly and on top of their tasks! The lifegaurds were excellent and alert to all safety procedures! There's a little coffee and tea souvenir shop. An outside playground! Amusement park with go carts and many kid friendly rides!!! Just beside a wonderful Irish coast with stunning art and sea life slices! We will definitely be going back! A wonderful indoor and outdoor spot for picnics and sea side fun on a sunny or rainy day!

It was our first time there, my son loved it, understood 2m € was spent to reopen but besides the reception and changing area/toilets you don't really notice the value. We had a good time, definitely go again and recommend it to anyone. P.S. the lockers would need an upgrade, hard to open them with the keys provided and some are broken, can't be used.

There were so many people but it's nice inside. It is well organized, there are different color in the wrist band for every time table to avoid over crowding. The wave pool and river loop has strong current which is nice. Overall it was a good experience. Can't take a photo inside as electronic device are not allowed.

Great place. Great changing facilities, a lot of the lockers wouldn't work, we had to keep trying different ones until we found a secure one. Other people were disgruntled by this also as they were holding small children whilst trying to secure a locker and then having to lift all their stuff out and into another locker, multiple times. Lockers are €1, it pops back out when you put back in your locker key. Some family changing cubicles at the back of the changing room. Have a wee area for pushchairs/buggy's. Shower area just as you are leaving the pool area, and some individual shower cubicles with doors. A mirror area with hair dryers, which you pay for. We bought tickets online, couldn't check in until 15 mins before the swim time. There is now a small viewing area behind the check-in desk, with table, chairs, and a tv. There is a small shop here that sells coffee ,which was absolutely beautiful, and only €3!! Amazing! They sell tea and soft drinks, some crisps, chocolate, sweets etc. Small selection but very reasonable prices. Overall, a great experience and it's great to see the viewing gallery/ seating area on my visit this time as this was never here on the previous years that I visited. We will definitely be back 😀

We had a great day out at Waterworld Bundoran with our family. There was something for everyone, from the little ones to the adults. The slides were great fun, and the wave pool was a lot of excitement. We also enjoyed the lazy river and the kids' area. The park was clean and well-maintained, and the staff were friendly and helpful. We would definitely recommend Waterworld Bundoran to anyone looking for a fun day out with the family. Pros: Variety of slides and water features Clean and well-maintained Friendly and helpful staff Wave pool Lazy river Kids' area Cons: Can get crowded, especially on weekends and during the summer holidays Changing rooms could be cleaner Overall: Waterworld Bundoran is a great place to spend a hot day with the family. We had a lot of fun, and we would definitely recommend it to others.

Water temperature cooler than previous years. Very over crowded . I have gone here a few years in a row and unfortunately nothing positive to say sun upgrades. Place may seem more modern, but over booking a massive issue

Had a fab time, lots of slides, no long queue time and there were different areas for different ages/abilities. The wave pool is great fun, if a little hectic! Kids all loved the whirlpool/rapids the best. Changing rooms were really busy, all unisex so very easy for families. Definitely get tickets in advance.

Castles
Nestled along the scenic bend of the River Eske, Donegal Castle is a stunning historical landmark that showcases Ireland's rich heritage. Originally constructed in the 15th century by the powerful O'Donnell clan, this impressive fortress has undergone significant transformations over the years. Sir Basil Brooke rebuilt it in 1623, adding a striking Jacobean house nearby.
This is a beautiful castle to go visit. It’s right in the middle of town. Parts of it have been restored, on the inside there are some finished rooms and a large grand Hall. There is lots of information to see here about the history of this castle. You can take a tour or walk about freely. There is a large grass courtyard. There is no free parking. You must park in the parking lot by the river.

This is a really great historical landmark right next to the Diamond, the town center with lots of great shopping and eating. The fee is very small and the tour takes about 20 minutes (more if you linger). The staff is very friendly, and the facilities are very clean. This was one of our favorite landmarks, as it had a sf guided tour with lots of great historical information, and some rooms were staged to replicate original conditions. It was a lot of fun and really interesting.

Worth a visit. Entrance fee €5. The castle does not have parking. You can park in the city for €0.30-€0.50 per hour. The castle is well preserved, worth a visit.

I was hoping you'd get to go into the outer corners; they have access but there's no way to enter (doorways suspended in the air). Nice little castle otherwise. The woodwork was a plus! They did a good job repairing. Took 30-45 minutes to explore. Parking was kinda hard to find. Sept 11, 2024.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Donegal Castle — 10/10, would “mind our heads” again. As two women who barely clear five feet, we’ve never once been accused of being too tall for anything. But apparently, medieval architecture had other plans. Between ducking through doorways, climbing spiral stairs that could double as a quad workout, and pretending we owned the place for 0.2 seconds, Donegal Castle gave us everything we didn’t know we needed. Highly recommend — just bring good shoes, a sense of humor, and maybe a helmet for the tall folks. 🏰😂

Intact castle with 4 floors open to the public. Beautiful castle , located right in town. We enjoyed our visit, worth your time.

Used the OPW card to gain free admission. Surprised a castle employee when the card was presented....she was rather smart-aleck and then saw the card and knew she had to now do some actual work besides sitting there and taking people's money. The castle is small but quaint and realistic. The 2d and 3rd floors are awesome.

St. Johns Point is a remote destination that requires a drive to reach Coral Beach, which offers a small but beautiful spot near the end of the point. Despite passing through an area marked as private property, visitors need not worry about trespassing. A narrow trail road leads from the beach to the lighthouse, where parking is available before walking down to the diving point. It's important to note that access to the lighthouse itself is restricted as it is private property.
