The Kilbeggan Distillery Visitor Centre is a restored distillery that now serves as a museum showcasing the history of whiskey. Visitors can explore old machinery and learn about the brewing process. The tour, which lasts about an hour, offers a friendly atmosphere and the opportunity to enjoy whiskey tasting. The watermill on site is still operational, and there's enthusiasm from the staff who make visitors feel welcome.
Our tour guide Joseph Mulligan from Happy Tours brought us here. What a fantastic place, amazing whisky and cool place. Nice people there too. I recommend a stop.

5 stars is not enough! We visited the distillery on Easter Sunday, guided tour included us plus 4 other people and amazing Darragh (apologies if I misspelled the name!). We got a tasting glass as a souvenir and the tour started with a drink with ginger ale and Kilbeggan Black. For drivers - ginger ale, made with Irish apples - very tasty 😍 Darragh gave us a great tour, explaining the history, the process and being involved and very attentive to our questions! We have never been to such a historic distillery and Kilbeggan was a great choice! If you’re looking for unique experience, taste nice whiskies, learn about the distillery and its history - this is the best place in Ireland! Small, boutique place making whiskies for the local consumption ❤️ Highly recommended for whiskey lovers!
Monika P — Google review
Great place for whiskey lovers and not only. 1 of the oldest Distillery in Ireland with spirit from the past century. Nice gift shop and surrounding plus whiskey tour with tastings.
Janusz L — Google review
Really enjoyed the tour and tasting done at Ireland’s oldest distillery…. Would happily recommend to others
Andrew W — Google review
Friendly staff and interesting place to visit. We felt the tour was quite rushed and the tasting was disappointing (only one type of whiskey to taste test), although we visited in a large group towards the end of the day so this may have played a part. The bar was lovely after and we picked up a few trinkets from the gift shop. Worth a visit if you’re in the area.
Diddely S — Google review
Interesting tour in an historic whiskey distillery. Nice tasting. Our tour lasted about an hour. Perfect amount of time.
Virginia H — Google review
Splendid tour. We had a great explanation and tour of the old distillery that was initially used, as well as the one used for small batches nowdays. The guide had excellent knowledge on the topic. (Added photo but don’t want to give spoilers)

Its a fantastic building and although I never ventured inside the outside had more than enough to catch my interest. The water being released makes for some lovely photos from across the river. It really is lovely on a sunny day. Well worth a visit even to admire from a far, enjoy

Belvedere House Gardens & Park is a stunning lakeside estate featuring a Palladian-style villa from the 1700s and Victorian gardens adorned with follies. The grand 18th-century hunting lodge, designed by Richard Cassels, sits within 65 hectares of gardens overlooking Lough Ennell. Visitors can explore the delicate rococo plasterwork in the upper rooms of the house and wander through the Victorian glasshouse, walled garden, and lakeside setting.
Fantastic location to visit with things for all ages including playgrounds, fairy forts and forest walks. Friendly staff and cafe on site does beautiful lunch. Will certainly be returning. Kids go free is a good incentive too.
Eoin B — Google review
Beautiful place! Even though the house is undergoing renovations so we couldn't visit it (and nobody advised us when we bought the tickets), the gardens are worth the whole visit. Amazing array of plants and flowers and trees, even a fairy garden for the delight of all the visitors ☺️ Super recommendable!
Fernanda B — Google review
I recently visited Belvedere House Gardens & Park, and had a great time. First of all, staff at the entrance are helpful and attentive. They gave us a guidance map and made sure we do not miss anything. Belvedere itself is a combination of serene walking paths through the forest, and the historic charm. Ideal for relaxing and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Whether you're into photography, history, nature, or just looking for a tranquil escape, Belvedere is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

It's a lovely place with beautiful scenery and walks. My favorite was the fairy garden but it's all truly worth the visit. It'll transcend you back in time.

Beautiful setting, sprawling picnic spot, lake walk, children's play area, forest walk, beautiful walled garden, fairy garden, and old architecture. Good food and area to relax. Overall experience is excellent.

Very beautiful location. Nice little outing and feeling as if in a old english series. The ice cream is really good and the staff working in the cafe are friendly and kind with the kiddies. Only drawback was that they busy doing some maintenance at the moment however it is still a lovely outing lots of little things to do at a reasonable price.

it's not cheap. Even when the main attraction - the palace - is closed, the entrance ticket price is almost the same.

Restaurant is disgraceful. Doubt this place has ever had a lick of paint. Carpet is threadbare and dirty. Food horrible. I was embarrassed having brought American guests for a night out. Shame on whoever is running this business.

Stunning service, wonderful readings by young believers of genesis and acts. Exceptional sermon Focusing on the pride of the Tower of Babel and its inverse, Pentecost. Beautiful bells and words by the servant of the lord. 🙏 I wish these were available online, like those from cornerstone back home, so more could enjoy the word of god. Another great point from the sermon “never accept less, we are here to worship all mighty god, and Pentecost should remind us of the power freely given to us” 🤲 Wonderful use of Christmas lights to highlight the diversity of the church!! ⛪️ 🎄 😂 love it!!😍
Chris P — Google review
Thanks to the book that bears its name, Kells is probably the best known of the Gaelic monastic sites. The book is not here and all that remains here is a churchyard with a few towers, a couple of high crosses and a locked church. The carvings and inscriptions on the crosses are interesting
Fergal J — Google review
A beautiful location with loads to see and explore, the round tower, the high cross and the large tower to the rear of the church stand out for their own points of interest. Parking was on the road and you can explore the cemetery and walk all the way around the church to enjoy the views provided, all in all a very ebjoyable visit, cheers
Michael G — Google review
The three high crosses here plus one more in town are an absolute must see for anyone interested in church history and spirituality. These are the iconic high crosses in many brochures of Ireland and so see them right up close is remarkable.
Adrian B — Google review
Visiting on Bank holiday weekend. Interesting old headstones and High Cross's. Very little information a available on site which is unusual considering this is where the Book of Kells originated from.
Patrick E — Google review
Better than expected. Not the original church or spire next to it but the round tower and crosses are.

The Spire of Lloyd is a unique Victorian Folly designed as an inland lighthouse, resembling a Doric column with a lantern atop. Originally constructed for the purpose of horse racing observation, it offers stunning views of the County Down's Mourne Mountains from its top.
A very interesting place to visit. Windswept location, exposed, so on cold days, wrap up!!
Richard M — Google review
A light house in the middle of a large field, where only in Ireland would you see it. It has excellent parking, a play area for children, some beautiful walks and of course the stunning lighthouse itself in a unique setting, a great location with something for everyone, cheers
Michael G — Google review
The Spire of Lloyd is a stunning inland lighthouse replica with panoramic views, it is said on a clear day you can see across 17 counties! Built in 1791, it's full of history and charm. The nearby Famine graveyard /Paupers graveyard adds a moving layer to the visit. Peaceful, scenic, and unique. The climb to the top of the Spire is open to the public only on Friday with bookings. The Views of Spire from the roads , the grass lands all adds a different viewpoint
Jango M — Google review
Tis a grand spot with lovely open spots for the kids to run, lovely meadows and wildflowers and grass thanks to Meath County Council! Beautiful nature and views
Liz D — Google review
Need to pre-book tour. Only on Fridays. Worth a visit. Fantastic views over Meath and beyond.
Dave F — Google review
Well worth a look. Beautiful views and quite a unique structure inland. The tour is short and while the guide was friendly and accommodating, the information and delivery could be improved a little. Still, would recommend a look if you're interested!

Castles
Athlone Castle is a 13th-century fortress situated by the River Shannon and features eight interactive exhibition rooms with chronological themes. The castle showcases modern and engaging displays that depict the town's turbulent history and its evolution through time. The highlight of the castle is Siege Experience, which takes place in a circular panoramic gallery. The Normans built this castle in 1210 after asserting their power over Athlone's ancient river ford, which played an essential role as a crossroad on the Shannon.
Athlone Castle is stunning. Incredible views. The staff were so nice and helpful. We were very lucky weather wise and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
K D — Google review
Great central location. The views from the castle of the city is nice. The price is a few euros and worthy of the material on display. For children it is good as there is alot to see. Well worth a look
Damien S — Google review
With the staff being well informed about both Irish and Scottish history, proved the information centre to be really informative. As a traveler, it’s always good to find recommendations of local places that Google may not tell you about. This tourism centre was easy to find and it’s part of the Adamson Castle. You are greeted warmly by friendly staff and they’ll ask you a little bit about why you’re visiting, they can give you the right information as long as you ask. If you didn’t know, they also have self-guided tours inside the Athlone Tourist Information Centre, if you’re trying to waste a little extra time for your flight, also assuming you’re interested in seeing the remains of the Adamson Castle that was built in the 12th century.
Tabitha-Robyn F — Google review
This was nothing like we expected. The castle looked cool from the outside but it was essentially made into a modern “museum”, it was not a castle tour. Of our 10 days in Ireland so far, this is the first thing we did that we felt was a waste of time and money.
Wendy — Google review
Very interesting place, small museum, I set 4 stars, just because of several rooms and attentions have been closed, and also in was not for free as others do in during pandemic, overall I really recommend to visit, it can be also not better then Bunratty castle, but anyway good enough
Eugene S — Google review
Went today, very beautiful, definitely recommend this and it’s history. Very great view as well

The Church of Saints Peter & Paul is a significant landmark in Athlone, situated on the West Bank of the Shannon. Constructed in the early 20th century, this church boasts stunning architecture and Italian sculptures that represent Irish Catholicism. The interior features beautiful stained glass windows and retains its original details from the 1930s, including a pulpit and old altar. Visitors are welcome to light candles inside.
St Peter and Paul Roman Catholic church was very inviting with a beautiful interior. We attended mass there and it was wonderful.

Amazing church, so much to see and look at, stain glass windows and alters and statues. Helps you realise what an amazing faith we have. Mass was good and priest was friendly and available after mass.

This church is a must for stained glass lovers. I was utterly mesmerized by 5 Harry Clarke Studios windows. There are also 2 wonderful windows at the porch created by Earley and Co of Dublin.
Laelia P — Google review
Make sure you go in. It doesn't look that impressive from the outside but I thought the inside was beautifully constructed. Lots of marble and the stained glass windows really stand out (you don't notice them from the outside).

Old Rail Trail (Whitegates, Athlone)

Hiking area
Outdoor Activities
The Old Rail Trail, located in Whitegates, Athlone, offers a 40-kilometer dedicated paved road perfect for cycling or walking. The flat route follows the old train tracks and passes through arched bridges, a tunnel, and picturesque countryside all the way to Mullingar. For those seeking a shorter excursion, an 8-kilometer cycle from Athlone to Moate is also available.
Lovely walk, especially on a sunny day. The path is shared between cyclists and pedestrians - I personally walked inside the old track because it's gravelly so the cyclists won't ride there. There is so much wildlife (there are also working farms alongside), particularly butterflies. Highly recommended.
Paola B — Google review
It is a nice flat trail which is suitable for running, walking, skating or cycling. However it is a fairly boring walk in my opinion. More could be done to improve it such as adding outdoor fitness equipment, benches or adding something to make it more interesting. Even an outdoor information board about the history of the area or trail would be beneficial( didn't see any the last time I was using the Old Rail Trail).
Sadejadesly — Google review
Ok for a walk, jog or run. If it's scenery you want this ain't for you
Michael — Google review
Place was good but could be better
Matthew — Google review

Anne B — Google review
Enjoyable cycling, feels mostly safe with no cars to worry about. It's a nice change, from someone who grew up cycling on rural roads in Ireland.
Ian D — Google review
Nice place to relax and enjoy nature. You can walk, run, do cycling for free of cost. Really nice place to visit if you are from Athlone.

Loughcrew Cairns

Mentioned on
11 lists
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Loughcrew Cairns, located in North Meath, Ireland, is a collection of Neolithic burial chambers dating back to around 3300 BCE. While not as famous as Newgrange, these ancient passage graves are a must-see for anyone interested in Ireland's ancient history. The site features clusters of megalithic cairns on the Slieve na Caillaigh hills, with public access to Carnbane East where Cairn T is the main attraction.
Absolutely loved visiting Loughcrew Cairns, an extraordinary and peaceful megalithic site hidden in County Meath. What I experienced: The narrow, single-lane rural road added to the charm, and expects calm driving! Around 25 parking spots offer quick access to the site, with a small blue info booth nearby. The short (approximately 650m) hike to the cairns is steep and includes steps, so sturdy footwear is a must. It’s not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs, but highly rewarding. Once you reach the summit, you're greeted by one of Ireland’s most historic collections of 30+ Neolithic tombs, dotted across three hills, with the crown jewel being Cairn T, known for its stunning rock art and alignment with equinox sunrise . On a clear day, the views stretch across the midlands, practically 360° panoramas, and a blissful sense of tranquility . I didn’t see any sheep during my visit, but locals say they often graze nearby, only adding to the bucolic atmosphere. There was the option to join guided tours at the nearby Megalithic Centre, which bring the site's ancient archaeology and mythology to life, highly recommended . Why it was special: A compact, scenic hike that’s both accessible and steeped in history. A rare chance to enjoy one of Ireland’s significant ancient sites without crowds. Rich storytelling from guides and breathtaking equinox alignments—pure magic. A true gem for history lovers, hikers, or anyone seeking a meaningful escape into Ireland's ancient past.
Carolina A — Google review
This is one of the most famous archeological sites in Ireland that is a burial ground for ancient people over 5,000 years ago. Caution: the walk is long and very steep.
Tom V — Google review
Historical Landmark with exceptional views and well worth a visit. Be prepared for a bit of a hike but well worth the effort, guides and information when you get there.
Uncle M — Google review
Beautiful view from the view. The tomb is maybe not overly impressive but depends on what you expect. It's a short, few minutes walk from car park but pretty steep.
MrsSaraya10 — Google review
This was better than I had expected. It is very easy to get to and very well maintained. There is a bit of a hike up to the main cairn but definitely worth it. Amazing views of surrounding g countryside.
Loz L — Google review
Great visit in spite of the wind. The place is beautiful with a great view of the surrounding area. We also really enjoyed the guided tour. I would recommend it if you are not afraid of getting through a steep enough climb.
Philippe L — Google review
An impressive megalithic site that requires a bit of hill walking to reach. Sadly, I don't think it is possible to get a key to enter the cairn anymore, but it is still worth a trip.

Tullynally Castle & Gardens is a picturesque estate located in County Westmeath, surrounded by hills and lakes. The castle has been the residence of the Pakenham family for over 350 years and still serves as their private home. While tours of the main rooms must be booked in advance, visitors can explore the manicured gardens, which seamlessly blend into the natural surroundings.
Lovely tea room, dog friendly covered seating area. Excellent rambling gardens with things for kids to explore. It's worth doing the walk down to the lake to see the beautiful restoration of native water meadows and trees
Ruth T — Google review
Enjoy a royal walk within some of the most beautiful gardens. We visited on a Sunday so we didn’t get to enjoy a tour of the castle but the gardens walk was a lovely experience. The gardens are well kept and offer almost magical views and beauty! The most captivating for us was the peace and quiet during our walk. The property spans across 200 acres of land, so there is more than enough space to enjoy for everyone. The price to enter is also more than affordable and after your walk is complete, you can enjoy a nice tea at the tea room in the heart of the castle.
Amar J — Google review
Tullynally, the Pakenhams’ family home since 1655. Cultural Escapism What a great way to delve into the history of this Westmeath gem of a historical site and yet a family home. Great stories, beautifully told by Joe the history buff from Kerry. Fantastic variety of well maintained garden walks 5*****
Dom W — Google review
A Special Visit to a Truly Special Place Once again, I had the pleasure of visiting Tullynally Castle a truly lovely place that holds personal meaning as it also happens to be the ancestral homestead of my wife’s family, long before the Pakenham family took residence. Back in 2020, while researching the area for a film project, I had the pleasure of meeting Thomas Pakenham himself. Since then, I’ve returned many times, often bringing students from Spain, Italy, and France on guided tours through the gardens, woodlands, and the castle’s rich historical grounds. Today’s visit was something extra special. I returned with my wife, and after spending over three peaceful hours forest bathing in the ancient woodlands, we found ourselves completely recharged. The tranquility of the trees, the birdsong, and the timeless atmosphere truly offer something rare and healing. We rounded off the visit with a quiet moment in the cozy coffee shop, which was as welcoming and charming as ever with warm smiles, good coffee, and the scent of trees still lingering in our breath. Every visit to Tullynally is a reminder of the beauty of Irish heritage, history, and nature at its finest. Whether you're a history lover, a nature seeker, or simply in need of peace, this place never disappoints. Highly recommended.
JASON F — Google review
Tullynally Castle is surrounded by twelve acres of parkland and gardens, including woodland gardens and walled gardens laid out in the early 19th century with a limestone grotto and ornamental lakes. In the former stables a lovely tearoom has been created, that serves delicious food.
Ger R — Google review
Tullynally Castle was a pleasant discovery for us! Immersed in the greenery, surrounded by majestic trees, you will find this little gem still managed and inhabited by the descendants of the Family. We purchased the ticket for the castle tour and gardens. Thomas, our special guide (you'll understand why when you go) didn't hold back in sharing anecdotes and details about the family's history. Once the tour was over, we took a break in the lovely café, also run by polite and helpful staff. The gardens, our last stop of the day, left us breathless as soon as we entered. An endless expanse of greenery. You can choose from various paths to follow, which lead you to lakes, forests, or flowering gardens. We understand that managing such a large park is not easy, especially if done privately. There is the right balance between the hand of man and nature, beautiful and wild as it is. See you soon! 🇮🇹💚🇮🇪

Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre

Mentioned on

The Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre showcases the impressive Iron Age bog road, dating back to 148 BC. The preserved 18m oak track is displayed in a humidified hall, offering insight into the unique flora and fauna of the bog as well as preservation methods. Visitors can enjoy an informative tour and a lovely 5km walk around the site.
During our visit the visitor centre was closed, however the 10 km's of walkable trackway winding the bog, was so peaceful, and tranquil, definitely a must when in the area.
V H — Google review
Wonderful little museum with very friendly and knowledgeable staff. The information provided by both staff and video is excellent. The trackway is very well displayed and the boardwalk outside across the bog is lovely. Will definitely be back. The museum is free to visit.
Catherine C — Google review
Very informative, our guide had lots of information to share. The film before the tour was a great look back into the dig. No tickets required.
Marvin W — Google review
Absolutely a Gem! An amazing artefact that deserves protection at all costs. The staff are incredible—dedicated and doing their utmost to preserve the Trackway. The guide was both passionate and highly knowledgeable, making the experience even more memorable. Unfortunately, the site is severely underfunded, and as a result, the Trackway is beginning to dry out. If no action is taken, it may eventually deteriorate beyond repair. I believe it might be necessary to undergo the full preservation process again, possibly in Portsmouth, given their expertise with the Mary Rose—which still looks fantastic. Ideally, the Trackway should be housed under glass to create a more controlled environment. It’s disheartening that, because the site is off the main tourist trail, the OPW seems to show little interest. There’s barely any advertising, and even less effort toward proper preservation—despite the fact that doing so would likely cost less than Dublin’s infamous “bike shed.” Shame.

A hidden gem, after watching Oíche Shamhna: An Ancient Mystery on Sunday in which the Corlea Trackway visitor centre was featured we knew a visit was needed to see this wonderful facility, The staff were all very friendly and welcoming with our guide Noel who was very knowledgeable and passionate, and funny explaining the history in a very understandable way Thank you. After the film show and seeing the Trackway we went for a walk around a very atmospheric bog. I would highly recommend a visit at any age.

A hidden gem and definitely worth the visit. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. It was amazing hearing through their enthusiasm about the conservation project and the different theories on why the trackway was built 148 BC. Stunning to be witness of such amazing craftsmanship. And then a lovely walk in the wetlands and learning about the restoration of the bogs.

The Cavan County Museum is a hidden gem, located in Ballyjamesduff. It showcases the history of the region, including a replica of a trench from World War I. The museum also features a peaceful reflection garden and informative exhibits that provide insight into the hardships endured by service personnel during the conflict. The staff are knowledgeable and welcoming, making it an enjoyable experience for all visitors.
Fabulous museum. I visited with my son for an external ceramic exhibition and we found ourselves walking through the whole museum and walking thd runs walk on the grounds. Fabulous for a day. We will return in spring to appreciate the museum in full.

Brilliant museum, so much to look at and my little fella especially loved the trenches out the back. Plenty of things to interact with too! Has a cafe on-site but didn't go into it, from the looks of it I think it was just scones and chocolate bars along with coffees. Would highly recommend visiting!

What a great day out. My 10 year old and 2 of his friends had a blast in trenches and even tried reinacting the war. The museum is lovely also. The staff were amazing and so very friendly. Will definately visit again.

Fantastic place to visit. Wonderful and informative exhibits of modern irish history and an outdoor representation of a WW1 trench. Took a few hours to get through everything and could have spent more time here if I could. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Will make a return visit before the year is out. (6 stars if I could give it)

My second visit to the Cavan County Museum, and I enjoyed it just as much as the first visit. The WWI Trench Warfare installation was open this time, though only about half, it looked like. It was still interesting and informative about what the soldiers would have experienced in the trenches. The indoor museum is amazingly thorough and two visits aren’t enough to take it all in. This visit the top floor has a new exhibit about the Irish War of Independence, and there is so much history, pain and eventual triumph, though many years before peace. Here are just a couple of photos of the archeological exhibits that are so fascinating.

A great place to spend a day, good variety of exhibitions to take in. You do need to give yourself time to wander round as there are three floors and an outside garden and area where there is a replica WW1 trench to explore. Lovely little cafe to have a bite and a cuppa as well. A really great experience, we will definitely be back.

Very nice walk, well lit. If pushed, I'd gripe the users (adults) that play soccer tend to be horrible and park on paths between the carpark (sic) and the courts, and regularly get stuck on the grass, chewing it up and ruining it. (Yes there are photos and videos online) but you cant speak to them about it, as they gang up and get very intimidating and vocal.

Beautiful park in Longford! Clean cosy, lots old trees, little lakes and river. There are a lot of different birds, they sing and these songs are like in paradise! There are many benches and it is a great idea to put a lot of wooden benches in the park, they are conducive to a pleasant rest and relaxation in nature. One of the best park in Ireland!☘️

If its just for the kids there is so much to do and see in the fairy part ❤️ it was honestly magical for my little fella, he loved going round everything, everything so different but so unique, it really is a very beautiful spot! Little cafe there too, with some delicious homemade goods and some hot food, free fruit and water. We then finished up sitting by the picturesque lake feeding the ducks! A beautiful spot on the sun or rain. Would highly recommend a visit with the kid's for a fun, cheap and full day out!

Fantastic time spent here with the family. Every visit is better than the last. Plenty to explore here and the coffee has improved something fierce. Surrounding woods full of things for kids to explore and there is a very solid path which is buggy friendly. River too which is full of wildlife. Saw a red squirrel here for the first time too. Definitely visit here every few months. 10/10

Cavan and Leitrim Railway Dromod

Tours
Located in the charming fishing village of Dromod, just a short drive from Carrick-on-Shannon, the Cavan and Leitrim Railway offers an exciting experience for both kids and adults. Visitors can hop on a steam train and explore a remarkable collection of historical artifacts, including old aircraft, vehicles, and items from the World Wars. The museum is run by passionate volunteers who are dedicated to preserving these treasures without government funding.
This was such an unexpected surprise. We thought we were going into a car graveyard, but definitely don't judge a book by it's cover! This place is small, cheap to get into and 100% run by volunteers. Everything in there is being restored by the team of guys in their own time. Donations are used to restore and buy new things for them to restore. My husband is a car nerd and he would probably move in if he could. The story of these guys is great, restoring things since 1993. They want to preserve bits of their Irish history and they know everything about each piece they have bought. Even if you are not a massive fan of cars their story is worth hearing. We loved it 100% would go again. They also run Nancy the steam train ever Sunday in August and every other Sunday in September.

The visit to the museum was an amazing experience. The guides are very enthusiastic and talk about the railway with a great passion. The museum's collection is also quite diverse as it contains not trains only, but also planes and buses

A lovely afternoon out. The volunteers were very welcoming and knowledgeable. We really enjoyed the short ride on the refurbished narrow gauge train, as well as the tour of the yard and workshops. My daughter got to sit in an old fire engine and in a Boeing 707 cockpit. Highly recommend.

Today, we took a trip to the unique Leitrim Dromod Museum, where we could experience history and something truly special. 🛤️ Right at the start, we got a ride on Ireland’s last functioning steam locomotive 🚂, an amazing opportunity to feel what travel was like in the last century. Some visitors were completely captivated by the atmosphere, the stories from our guide—the owner himself—and the chance to connect with history 📸. What really sparked excitement, though, were the unique exhibits that we could not only view but also try out ourselves! We sat in the very seats where Marilyn Monroe sat during her transatlantic flights ✈️. And as a bonus, we even got to explore the cockpit of a plane piloted by Prince Philip 🛫, while Queen Elizabeth relaxed in her cabin 👑. Additionally, we admired beautiful historic buses, including iconic double-deckers from the 1950s to 1970s 🚌, which we could explore up closer. For those looking for a bit more action, there was a historic handcar available to power along the tracks 🚲. Leitrim Dromod Museum is truly worth a visit—you won’t find such a perfect blend of history anywhere else. 😊 We came on sunday at 15:40, took the ride in 5mins and spent around one hour exploring the area with our guide. Entrance fee is paid at the end of the tour. 💶Its possible to pay either in cash or by card. 🧾As we were organised group we also asked and got an invoice with written confirmation for our tickets.🎫

What a tour!!! Completely took us by surprise. Myself, husband and 5 children stumbled upon this place as one of the kids wanted to go on a train. Thought we’d be in and out in 15 mins. 2 hours later we left after the most amazing experience led by Michael. He could not be more engaged with the children. Had them rapt from the first 5 mins. They had a ball from riding in a train cart to holding bombs, looking through canons, flying airplanes and driving fire trucks the list just keeps going. All came away say “best day ever”. Thank you so much to Michael and all the other volunteers for giving us a day we’ll never forget. Excellent value at €20 for a family.

What really stood out for me was the stunning golf course; it’s a golfer’s paradise with breathtaking views that made every hole enjoyable. The overall atmosphere of the hotel is warm and welcoming, making it a perfect getaway. I can't recommend it enough!

Only had a quick bite in the Summit restaurant here. Very luxurious hotel with unbelievable stunning views especially from our table here. Food probably could have been better my burger bun was on the very hard and crispy side. Chips had that oil needs to be changed flavour. Desert was pretty average as well. The Hotel itself is out of this world and very impressive i only tried the Summit restaurant. Price was fairly reasonable food could improve.

I booked the Slieve as a present for my partner and paid extra for use of the spa. The “foot spa” was more like a sink and you controlled the temperate yourself (in comparison to other spas that have foot spas which generally have jets and the water fills up itself and drains). The salt room also didn’t work. The tropical shower was supposed to light up but they were not working and one of the buttons didn’t work. The lift to our room was not accessible on x2 occasions as when we tried to get to our room as staff left large laundry trolleys inside them leaving no room for us to stand inside. When we did get to our room for the first time after check in, there were empty alcohol bottles and glasses lying outside the door. I sent an email as general feedback, stating areas of concern as stated above and areas that were great, such as the summit restaurant aswell as the bar. The hotel manager stated their apologies and said if I paid for another room and return to the Slieve, they’d offer the spa for free. It’s worth noting the price offered for a second stay was actually more than what I originally paid. I had said I was not keen to pay a large sum of money yet again to stay, just to get free access to the spa which was disappointing regardless. I asked kindly if, since they were going to offer free use of the spa on another occasion, they could instead refund us the cost of the spa given a lot of the facilities weren’t working. They declined this and said their “offer of goodwill” was the only option as a refund for the spa was “not appropriate”. I genuinely would have considered returning to the Slieve with the intentions of giving a second chance incase of just getting them on a bad day - like I said, my initial email was sent for feedback purposes. However the way management handled this situation has entirely put us off. Therefore we will no longer be returning and definitely will not be recommending it to anyone.

Having visited Ballinamore for a number of years since a child, this was my 1st time going here with my children. I wasn't sure what to expect but I need not of worried. This place is really good and the gentleman who show us around is a real asset to the place. He showed us everything and gave such great detailed information about things. He explained that the owner would be able to give more details but to be honest his knowledge was fantastic. Our son who is 5yrs old loved it. He was asking so many questions & each was answered. This place is great for the young & the old. We were a family of 4 & this place is well worth a visit. We already have 2 extra people to visit with us again in the near future. A real hidden Leitrim gem.

What an amazing place - so many cool and interesting pieces! We spent two and a half hours with Eugene as he shared his incredible knowledge of the collection with us. He's a very funny guy and had us laughing the whole time. Great value for money. The place was spotlessly clean. The cars/truck in particular were mint. I'm writing to share what an absolutely fantastic time my son, Eoin, had at Rally School Ireland this morning for his 15th birthday! From start to finish, the entire experience was top-notch. The instructors were truly brilliant. They were knowledgeable, patient, and created a really exciting yet safe learning environment. Eoin was buzzing about how clearly they explained everything and how encouraging they were throughout his time on the track. And the cars! Wow! Mullaghmore Equestrian Centre

Horse riding school

Horseback Riding Tours
We have been coming here for almost 2 years, my little girl started as a complete beginner having already loved horses. If it wasn't for Marese, her family and team making every lesson and competition the highlight of her week I am sure she may have given up at some stage. The time and kindness they all dedicate to each and every person that comes to try riding for the first time or returns every week is a testimant to the hard work they all put in. I honestly could write pages on this place, from the way they make each child feel special and encouraged while riding to the opportunity they give some to help volunteer who may not ever have their own horse to the many children with special needs I see each week loving their time riding and the parents of that get to see their child thrive doing it. Honestly a jewel of a place that many would be lost without, thankyou Marese and all the people that make it possible week after week.... and all the horses too !

Visited here while staying locally in Monaghan. Our kids are 3,4 and 7 and they really enjoyed the visit. The older two had a half hour lesson and the staff were really helpful, attentive and friendly throughout. It was a proper lesson full of tips and the kids felt safe at all times. There is lots of horses here and we got a good tour of the place too. It’s a really homely spot. We only booked last minute too and they were really accommodating. I just wished we lived closer! Kids loved it. Would recommend if anywhere nearby! Only 15 mins from Monaghan town.

Lovely walks and a great place to base yourself if you are into water sports. We didn't try it but they have also got glamping, camping and holiday lets.

Beautiful setting on the lough with breathtaking views. Lots to do including trails, cycles for hire, pond dipping and bug hunting. There are a couple of great mobility scooters that allow access to ost of the grounds. And of course the tearoom. Best one of any NT property we have been to, delicious range of hot food and the cakes and pastries have to be seen and tasted to be believed!

Had an excellent visit to Crom today, it rained but the beauty, colours, smells and the peacefulness were worth the soaking! I saw my very first red squirrel, alas too shy for a photo. We walked the Estate Trail and added the island with the walled garden approx 5.4 miles but you can do shorter paths. So lovely we will come again. The cafe, coffee and cake were excellent too. Thanks to Crom / National Trust staff for ensuring this wonderful place is available for us all.

Castle ruins well with a visit and there's a long walk around the estate and Island. We didn't take a boat but you can and there's camping for tents. National Trust place, so no charge if you're a member.

Costello Memorial Chapel

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Costello Memorial Chapel, located in Carrick-on-Shannon County Leitrim, is a remarkable and unique tiny chapel that stands as a testament to deep affection. It is renowned for being the smallest chapel in Europe and the second smallest in the world. The chapel's stunning stained glass windows and its beautiful setting between surrounding buildings make it a surreal and breathtaking sight. Despite its small size, it holds an overpowering sense of love and light inside.
Costello Memorial Chapel is the smallest chapel in
Europe and the 2nd smallest in the world. remarkable example of a mans deep affection for his wife is to be found at Carrick-on-Shannon County Leitrim, in the Costello Memorial Chapel, reputed to be the second smallest chapel in the world. Only in the Holy Land is their said to be one tinier; certainly the Building is unique in this country and is considerably smaller than the smallest similar structure in Britain. The Chapel is sixteen feet long by twelve foot wide and thus covers an area of 192 feet. The smallest in Britain for which a restoration and preservation fund has now been opened, is at Upleathan in Middlesborough and measures sixteen feet by fifteen or 270 square feet. It is then 78 square feet larger than that at Carrick. The Costello Memorial Chapel was erected by Edward Costello to mark his devotion to his wife, who died in 1877 at the age of 46. Mr Costello had been a substantial farmer at Dromore a few miles from Carrick, but had moved to the town during the early part of the 1800’s and set himself up in business. He was widely known as a man of great kindness and charity and was partly instrumental in bringing the marist order of nuns to the town.

This is tucked away and can very easily be missed. It is the smallest Chapel in Europe and is well worth the visit, it’s beautiful
Sarah C — Google review
Absolutely beautiful! We happened upon this quite by accident after visiting the local pub for fish-n-chips. The story behind its creation, and creators, s well as it's stark contrasted beauty to the surrounding city is... quite surreal, and breathtaking. It may be a small, quick stop on your tour through Ireland or Roscommon/Carrick, but it comes very highly recommended!

Arigna Mining Experience

Nestled in the scenic hills above Lough Allen, the Arigna Mining Experience offers a captivating glimpse into Ireland's coal mining history, which spanned from the 1600s to 1990. This unique attraction features an immersive 50-minute underground tour that takes visitors 400 meters down to the coal face, complete with a thrilling simulated mini-explosion. Led by former miners who share their firsthand experiences of the challenging working conditions and dangers faced underground, this tour is both educational and engaging.
Definitely worth a visit. Tour was very informative and our guide was very friendly. Interesting to see how folks operated the mines back in the day. The gift shop had a nice selection of items for sale. The food was pretty decent too and reasonable value. Not far from Carrick-on-Shannon. If you wanted to make a day of it I'd recommend doing the The Shed Distillery afterwards and then maybe the boardwalk or a cruise in the Shannon 😎
Paddy W — Google review
Gerry was the guide during our visit, & what a guide he was. As a miner in this pit until it closed, he was informative & could tell afew funny stories along the way. He explained about how the equipment worked & how the men would have to position themselves to work safely. He & my dad, who also worked in the pits as a teenager, were able to compare notes, albeit different types of pit. This is probably the most engaging mining experience I've visited. There is an area of photos & old equioment/tools as well as a short video to help explain the mining jobs of the men and a nice clean cafe. I would highly recommend a visit here, worth the money. Added bonus, spectacular views of Lough Allen & the valley, especially when the sun is shining.
Deb H — Google review
If you've got a weekend in Leitrim/Roscommon, this is worth the visit. Our guide was an ex-miner. His accent was tough for me (from Dublin) so I'd be interested to know if foreign tourists think similarly. The mine itself was pretty interesting, a bit chilly so a fleece/jumper would be recommended, and there's a small space for extra reading & a video. The cafe is ok with a small gift shop. There's plenty of parking & there's gorgeous views of Lough Allen. The driving route to Arigna is on some tiny, narrow country roads.
John K — Google review
Really great experience, history of the mines was so interesting, our guide Eamon was lovely to chat to and hear his tales of the mines, its great the guides are ex mine workers to hear first hand stories. The cafe was so relaxed and lovely food, the staff were so welcoming and friendly, highly recommend a trip to the mines.
Louise S — Google review
Absolutely fantastic experience, massive thanks to Eamon who was employed as a miner in Arigna mines until it closed, for the fantastic tour. Thanks to all the staff who were very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend this experience.

Arigna Mining Experience - An amazing tour into the history of Irish coal mining! A tour with former miners reveals 400 years of history at Arigna mines. In 1958, local coal powered the ESB power station, which closed in 1990. The miners had a grueling job: working on their knees in narrow 45cm faces, in dust and darkness. Awesome experience. I definitely recommend visiting!
Alexander S — Google review
Maurice an ex-miner did a private tour with us. He provided great explanations but also stories of the time he was digging coal. Great visit.
Nath C — Google review
My wife and I toured the Arigna mine in May 2025. There was just the two of us and of course our guide. I think his name was Ian, but can't remember for sure <sorry>. It was fascinating to hear the stories of the brave people working in the mines. It was hard and dirty work to say the least. Besides the potential inherent danger, we were told the vein of coal they would try to extract was only 22 inches thick. Well worth the time to see how some people had to earn a living. There is a small gift shop and cafe if you're hungry for something quick. There is also a nice view of the surrounding area in the lunch area if you stay for something to eat.

Hiking Trails
A boardwalk meandering through pastures & blanket bog, plus steps up a mountain for sweeping views.
Stunning - tough at the end. The end is worth the climb. To be honest the gravel road could be softened. There’s a bit too much hard engineering - but I appreciate access deep into in this stunning landscape. I don’t appreciate the farmer ripping visitors off at the entrance! Walkers should know you can park near by for free. Staff at Marble Arch are wonderful. Enjoy it’s a lovely day out in a beautiful place.
Bridgette B — Google review
It took me ten years to persuade my husband to agree to walking this trail. It didn’t disappoint. When we started out there was cloud down over the mountain and it wasn’t clear exactly where the finish was which was probably a good thing. By the time we reached the top the clouds had cleared and we had a fabulous view. I honestly didn’t expect to find the walk difficult as a train regularly but it was tough enough. I would definitely recommend it though you need to go prepared.
Paula R — Google review
Regarding the trail, the initial 3 km from the car park is a gravel road with easy to moderate difficulty. It is recommended to have good trekking shoes for this part. Taking a kid's trolley on this path wouldn't be recommended. After 3 km, the rest of the path is a proper boardwalk (wooden plank with metal net on top for grip). The total path on the boardwalk (to and fro) is approximately 6 km which can take anywhere between 1-3 hours depending on your speed. Most of this path is moderate level difficulty and only the final part of approx 0.5 km is very steep. It is recommended to always use the boardwalk as the grassland below could be wet/spongy. One should carry sufficient water and snacks for this trail.

This walk was something I was looking for some time. It's beautiful place to visit. Walk 12.2 kilometres long half of it is a boardwalk with 450 steps. Definitely worth to visit.

My 30th County high point today, Fermanagh and Cavan, the spectacular views from Culcaigh Mountains and Irelands amazing Stairway to Heaven ... worth the wait! Crossing the border on the mountain was a 1st for me with 360 degree vews across Fermanagh! I really was in Heaven!
Liz H — Google review
I’ve done this walk a few times now. Just a heads-up — wear hiking shoes. Runners might get a bit uncomfortable with the road conditions. It’s a lovely walk overall, especially if you’re working on your breathing, since it’s uphill one way. Takes around 2h 40m both ways. Car park is about €7 or £6 by card. You don’t need to reach the top — the views from halfway up the stairs are the same as at the top.
Marina — Google review
Stunning views from the top of the stairway, even though it was a slightly cloudy day it gave it an eerily atmospheric view. It was harder than I expected so i’d recommend bringing a little snack to help you power through, or at least have a hearty breakfast 🥾

We picked a warm summer's day. With no clouds. The breeze kept us cool with a bottle of water. It's a hard hike up but so easy to get back down. 3 car parks First one is before you get to the marble arch caves, this is if you are staying up there. Second one is after the caves to the left. A man will stop you and ask for a fiver. We parked here but as we walked up there was a 3rd a little closer. Maybe this is the online booking one. Glad to tick this off my list of things to do. Views can only be appreciated on a clear day.

Marble Arch Caves, located in Fermanagh within the Marble Arch Geopark, form the longest known cave system in Northern Ireland at around 11.5 kilometers in length. Visitors can enjoy guided tours on walkways and by boat through these UNESCO subterranean caves from March to September. The tour is available in English and pamphlets are provided in multiple languages including Spanish.
Here’s a short review you could use: --- We had a wonderful family visit to the Marble Arch Caves in Enniskillen. The guided tour was both fascinating and fun, with stunning underground chambers, rivers, and rock formations that amazed both adults and kids. The guide explained everything clearly. The surrounding Park was closed unfortunately. A perfect day out for families who love nature and exploration!
Varvara G — Google review
I had the pleasure of visiting the Marble Arch Caves as it was close to 30 years from my last visit, and it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming – friendly, and full of knowledge that really brought the caves’ history to life. The tour itself was fascinating, with each step taking us deeper into a landscape that felt both ancient and alive. It’s incredible to think of the history steeped within those walls, still continuing to this day. What really made the visit unique, though, was the chance to take a boat trip into the caves, as the water level was unusually low. Gliding through the dark, echoing chambers was both peaceful and awe-inspiring, giving us a perspective of the caves that felt truly special. Overall, the combination of passionate staff, rich history, and that rare boat journey made the visit stand out. It’s one of those experiences that lingers long after you leave, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for something memorable. To think that a Stalactites and Stalagmites grows 1cm every 1000 years. Stalactites are icicle-shaped mineral formations that hang from a cave's ceiling, while stalagmites are mound-shaped formations that grow upwards from the cave's floor.

Went with a group of 10 as part of a research trip. Booked online which saved money. We weren't rushed. Lucky to have got the boat as it was raining outside. Everyone enjoyed it. Good information boards in the main building and video room.
Arlene M — Google review
A fun and interesting experience. There is a short boat ride when you get into the cave (this is dependent on recent water levels, best to check before arriving if this is operating). The boat ride allowed a unique experience of floating along under rock formations. The guide talked us through different calcium formations and the origins of the show cave. Can't fault the guide, he was charming and answered all questions with ease. The cafe there offers a great variety of food (sandwiches/cakes) and a nice cuppa. Gift shop for the usual goodies which was fairly priced. Ample parking on site. Recommend walking boots due to terrain inside the cave. Quite a few stairs at the end of the cave.
Claire W — Google review
I would 10/10 recommend a trip to the Marble Arch Caves! We took our kids (8&6) and had an absolute blast. The tour (especially if the boat tour is on) gives you sights like no other, that you definitely don’t get to see on a daily basis. Truly transports you into a subterranean world!!
David S — Google review
Really interesting place and very peaceful inside. I was worried about feeling claustrophobic, but it wasn’t a problem at all, the public areas are all very roomy and you’re always on a clear path. We loved the boat trip inside and our guide was excellent. Thanks also to the colleagues in the shop who were super friendly, Olivia took great care of our big group who had to be split across two tours. It was very popular and tour numbers are limited so you can enjoy the quiet of the caves without crowding, so book ahead.
Lindsay M — Google review
Well worth a visit, we didn't book in advance but did arrive fairly early. It was very informative, apparently rocks are alive. We especially enjoyed the little boat journey. Be prepared for the climb coming out.

Nestled in the serene parkland of Enniskillen, Castle Coole is an exquisite 18th-century neoclassical mansion that offers a glimpse into the grandeur of its past. Surrounded by 600 hectares of lush greenery and a tranquil lake, this National Trust property is home to the UK's only non-migratory greylag geese colony. Visitors can embark on guided tours to explore its stunning interiors, featuring elegant double cantilever staircases, Italian marble fireplaces, and Regency furniture.
Beautiful property, each room was absolutely stunning! Went on the last house tour of the day and it was brilliant! Just a small group of 3 and the amazing tour guide Noelle! She was so knowledgeable and passionate about the family and history of the property, she absolutely made the whole experience. Would visit again! ☺️😍
Sarah W — Google review
The house is beautiful. You have to join a tour which takes over 1 hour but is well worth it. The interiors are lovely but as many of the items are on loan, from the Lowry-Corry family who still live there, you are not allowed to take photos. You end the tour via the servants' tunnel, which was built so as not to be seen by the gentry. Access to the house is via steps by the visitors centre/cafe. Parking is close by. The walk around the lake is less than 2km but due to the shrubs and trees you only get one good look at the lake. There is a golf course there but it is private.

Our first time visiting here and we really enjoyed it , Noelle who took our house tour was very very knowledgeable about the house and what the history etc. We didn't get to the team house or too all the ground's but the book shop was good and worth a visit.

We didn't spend much time here. We walked around and had some lunch. It was really pretty, but don't expect a castle. it's a stately home.
Chris A — Google review
**National Trust meets Downtown Shabby** I was very disappointed by my visit to Castle Coole Estate. The house was in a poor state of repair, with some rooms looking very run down and shabby. The fabrics were worn and faded, and some of the furniture was sparse and imposes uninviting. But invites taking your money no problem. Not the sign of a wealthy estate I've come across to expect. One room was very dark. I felt I could have done with a flashlight to look around. Mostly, everything is roped off, and the house has restricted access for paid visitors. There are very few places for people with disabilities to sit down and catch a breath. They're roped off, too! The only room that impressed me was the rotunda, which had some beautiful gold decorations and an Irish harp. Possibly why the National Trust tour guide books have been withdrawn from sale to National Trust members and visitors? The staff were mainly very rude and unwelcoming, especially when they told me that I was not allowed to take any photographs inside the house. There was no sign anywhere that said this, and I felt like they were violating my rights as a visitor. Despite this house being used in local television programmes and locally infamous. They also did not explain anything about the history or significance of the house and just rushed me through the tour. After an hour, I was never so glad to leave. The time really dragged. We were constantly watched as a group around the house as if we were being treated as commoners and potential thieves. The only nice women I found around the estate was a receptionist and an elderly voluntary lady in the library shop. The courtyard was a mess, with peeling paint and weeds everywhere. The café was a joke. Just garden tables and chairs outside with what looked like an ice cream van. Tbh, I've seen better stalls at Nutts Corner Sunday Market. The gardens were nonexistent, just a field of overgrown grass and cows. Contrary to the map in the outside overlooking. The lake walk I paid for is possibly the my shortest in recent memory. I felt like I wasted my time and money at this place, and I would not recommend it to anyone. It is a shame that the National Trust and its current inhabited residents do not take better care of this historic estate.

This was my first time at Castle Coole. It is such a beautiful spot. Even though it's situated in the heart of Enniskillen Town, you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere it's so serene and peaceful. The lake views, the mountain, the mansion, the grounds, it's all so beautiful. We took a guided tour in around the house. Unfortunately visitors aren't allowed to take any pictures inside but the tour was interesting, very informative and full of history and engaging facts. The interior is splendid. So many beautiful details to see and experience. If you're in the area I would recommend stopping by here. The coffee shop too was full of lovely treats and a great cup of tea. All the staff ee encountered were so welcoming and friendly.
Nicole M — Google review
I have visited the grounds many times before walking my dogs, however this was my first time inside the house. Its stunning, I was not expecting to see so much of the interior. Our tour guide was Emma, she was a vibrant fun tour guide, very polite, knowledgeable & welcoming. We ended up having a tour alone with her as no body else showed up to that particular tour slot (although there were 25 in the previous tour). We really enjoyed the tour & learning about the history of castle coole. Owners requested no photos of the interior home are allowed.

Sights & Landmarks
Nestled on the central island of Lough Erne, Enniskillen Castle is a stunning 16th-century fortress that has stood as a sentinel over the town for centuries. Once the stronghold of the Maguire chieftains, this iconic castle features twin turrets and an impressive Watergate that greets visitors arriving by boat. Inside its historic walls, you'll discover two fascinating museums: the Fermanagh County Museum and The Inniskillings Museum.
What an excellent installation in the town - the museum has some really interesting collections and a pretty surprising amount of history to display. Well worth its entrance fee. Very good for children, and those interested in local history and culture.
Raymond G — Google review
I love castles, but this time I can tell that I did not feel at ease in it. I supposed to find more informations about the Maguire family and their history, instead what I found was a war museum where tanks are pointed towards the castle as if to symbolise the supremacy of England over this Irish family that was the owner of the castle. There is just a small display case with some of their stuff and a small room that shows the story of this family in the castle. The other parts are a war museum with noises of battles, army medals, weapons... To me, it was a bit disappointing...
Roxydamy D — Google review
Very interesting museum with numerous displays. We learned a lot of local history. My husband is a military history buff so he particularly enjoyed those displays.
Sandi H — Google review
On our first trip to the north of Ireland we stopped in Enniskillen for a quick break by a river bank. On a whim we decided to have a look around Enniskillen Castle. £6 each for tickets which is very very reasonable in my opinion. We didn’t really follow any predetermined path, just started rambling. What a lovely, informative and educational ramble that was. Beautifully laid out and meticulously maintained displays chart the rich history of the area through the ages. From early settlers to the industrial age. Across to the military museum that shares the history of the Royal iniskilling Fusiliers and their involvement and sacrifice across many wars. A totally unexpected experience that I can only highly recommend.

Went to library to study for a very important advanced life support exam. Asked for private study area. Automatic door at one end of room and another door at other end. Staff use study area to walk from one end of building to other. Constant noise of automatic door opening and constant slamming of other door. When asked if staff could us another way to walk instead of through a “private” study area I was told yes but it’s closed the doors are locked. When again asked if this could be opened to allow for a quieter study area I was told a simple NO. I asked to speak to the library manager but was told they were both on tea break but I could fill a complaint form out. I felt this attitude of the staff was appalling. Even the toilets in a public library are closed and had to walk to a local shopping centre to use bathroom. My advice to anyone wishing to study in the Omagh area is to AVOID Omagh library. Worst library and appalling attitude from staff

We were not that impressed by Castle Archdale Country Park but as it has free entry, we can't really complain. There's not much to the gardens, there's not really many flowers, wild or otherwise. Nice to walk around and learn a few details about the history of the place like the flying boats. As for the campsite, well catered for if you have children. The only thing I would say is there aren't enough toilets. In the block I used there were plenty of showers but only two toilets. Nice and clean though. Some wonderful nature and wild life to see. Of course it's great for sailing and water activities.

There are a series of pleasant waymarked walks of varying lengths throughout the country park. These range in length from 1 mile / 1.6 km to 2.5 miles / 4 kms. There is also a path suitable for wheelchair users. Entry is free. Car parking is free and available at several different locations. Clean toilets can be found in the courtyard. Information boards are dotted around. Picnic benches are available at various locations Castle Archdale was a very important Royal Air Force Flying Boat base during World War Two and the German battleship, Bismark, was discovered by a RAF Catalina aircraft operating out of here. There are remnants of the old base still here, for example, bomb and aviation fuel storage sites. It is possible to pick up a leaflet from the office in the courtyard showing the locations of these sites around the country park. Poignantly, there is also a War Graves commemoration stone beside the beacon at the lough's edge. This remembers the crew of an aircraft that crashed on a return flight. "Lest We Forget". If you like wildlife, you may be lucky enough to see Red Squirrels in the woodland. Birds such as Swifts, Swallows, Mute Swans, Black-headed gulls, Robins , Song Thrushes Malkard ducks and Coots can also be seen here. We visited midweek in July 2025 and the Countryside Centre and Castle Archdale at War Exhibition was open in the Courtyard buildings. The member of staff there was pleasant too. In my opinion, this is a nice place to visit if you are in the area and/or have an interest in World War Two.

A huge collection of motoring memorabilia and an amazing selection of WW2 artifacts. Phillips passion shone through the visit, he has spent many years collecting items and everything is so well presented and cared for. I'm from Omagh originally and didn't know this was even here until today. Great cause to contribute to also ❤️👍

Visited here in a small family group on a quite Sunday afternoon - this is well worth a visit! There is so much to see that it would probably take a few trips.. It's fantastic this history is being preserved for future generations and Philip is a fantastic guide and full of knowledge. Probably not a good idea for younger kids but I would highly recommend for teenagers upwards.

Amazing. A really enjoyable tour. The collection is superb, everything in excellent condition and a trip down memory lane. The curator and owner gives a great tour, the WW1 and WW2 memorabilia is especially interesting. Book in advance.

We visited today & were amazed at the vast collection of memorabilia from days gone by. Philip showed us around his private collection which was superb. Well worth a visit, but ring first. I am not a museum lover, but I loved this one.
