The Diyarbakır Grand Mosque, also known as Ulu Camii, is a significant Muslim religious complex with a rich history dating back to 1091. Situated in a city steeped in nine thousand years of diverse civilizations and cultures, the mosque boasts picturesque architecture and a large courtyard. Originally a church, it was converted into a mosque and is believed to have ties to Prophet Musa AS.
The Great Mosque was built in the late 11th century by the Seljuk sultan Malik-Shah I over an older mosque. According to some, it is the fifth holiest site in Islam after the Great Mosque of Damascus, which influenced its design. It can accommodate up to 5,000 worshippers and hosts four different Islamic traditions.
Faris R — Google review
You see an architectural texture that has turned from a church to a mosque. As a photographer, I took shots according to certain positions of the sun, it has a very pleasant architecture. I didn't go inside so I can't comment on it. It is a building that you will want to take photos of as you pass by.
Cemrecan Y — Google review
Ulu Cami, Grand Mosque of Diyarbakır is the former St. Thomas Christian Church, one of the oldest churches in history. The mosque is considered by some to be the fifth holiest site in Islam. The Great Mosque of Diyarbakir is the oldest and one of the most significant mosques in Mesopotamia. Every corner has a different architectural design. The columns on the second floor have a different design. It is phenomenal.
Nilufer U — Google review
I loved this Grand mosque. You will see diverse religious influences on the architecture of the mosque over time. Worth to visit.
Gulnabat B — Google review
beautiful mosque with a lot of history (used to be a church). We ran into a tour guide who explained what all the carvings on the walls mean. Look out for lion heads, carvings of rivers, vines... definitely worth visiting to see the beautifully carved stone columns
Alexandra A — Google review
A very historical and interesting place, it keep attracting you to visit again and again. I've spent two times morning prayer here, in this mosque they practice Shafi'i school of thought. Will be back for more
Felix S — Google review
The Grand Mosque, Ulu Camii of Diyarbakir. Believed to have dated back as far as to Prophet Musa AS. It was formerly a church and later got converted to a Mosque. It is the 5th Holiest Mosque in Islam, having close to 7 Prophets and some Sahabis of Prophet Muhammed SAW worshipped here. The mosque complex also hosted the first universite established in the subregion. This complex hosted 3 empires; Roman, Selcuks and the Ottomans. This is clearly evident by the inscriptions found on the walls. There is also the world's first sun clock in the compound built by the father of Algebra.

Beautiful mosque, as it was originally a church it has a very specific architecture. I especially loved the chorintian style pillars

They opened it when another customer came. After a while, they said if you stay longer, we will charge you twice the fee. Money-hungry people who have no interest in tradesmen. It is a very large cemetery. It is definitely worth visiting, with its huge gravestones and cleanliness.
Isa A — Google review
The place is by the highway so it's very easy to spot. The entrance was free when we came but I think you would need a müze kart. But when we arrived, no security or guard there. The place is just a huge field full of tombs. You can touch some of the tombs but most of them are out of range. You just need to spend like 5-10 mins Max and you'll be done
Irene A — Google review
Very interesting and important piece of history considering the civilizations in this area date back 6,000 years. The walkways are either uneven stones or railroad ties. Not good for strollers or wheelchairs. There wasn’t a fee to enter.
Richard K — Google review
This is a must see place, well preserved since 13th century, had a very limited time but will Come again for sure. Amazing place thosands of People rest in the area/cemetery. Probably the area was reaching the Van Lake, nowadays occupied by ugly houses and a motorway nearby. Anyway you still will be amazed by what you see there, it takes about 45 minutes to walk around in the yard, 1,5 hours drive from Van Airport, 30 minutes from Tatvan town and 45 minutes from Bitlis city. Enjoy it.

Stunning stone carving, you should definitely visit
Su M — Google review
This is a huge cemetery where we can walk around freely and observe the tombs. There is a museum we didn't visit beside. It's nice to see it if you pass by.

Ahlat Seljuk Cemetery is on UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. It must be on your agenda when visiting Van Lake region in eastern part of Turkey. Ahlat city is also a member of Cittaslow network. This cemetery is the biggest Turk-Islam cemetery in the world.
Mete A — Google review
A cemetery from the Selcuks dynasty worth visiting. Interesting tombs and it is worth to read and understand the meaning of the script. You will see a lot of the tomb stones have the window shape carving which is a door to heaven. It is a shape I have seen in many places and only here I learnt the meaning.

Bodies of Water
Lake Van, the largest lake in Turkey, is a stunning saline body of water surrounded by picturesque mountains. At an altitude of 1720m, it offers breathtaking views of Mount Suphan and the Ihtiyar Sahap Mountains. Visitors can explore ancient Urartian sites and other historical legacies around the lake. In winter, the landscape transforms into a mesmerizing blend of snow, mountains, and water.
It is a saline lake that receives water from many small streams that flow from the surrounding mountains. It is one of the few endorheic lakes in the world (a lake with no outlet) with an area of more than 3,000 square kilometers (1,200 square miles) and contains 38% of the country's surface water

Driving along the Lake on our way to Malatya from Dogubeyazit. We stopped by to take photos & enjoy the view. It takes nearly 2hours from right to left corner of the Lake. Should be in the list for visitor going to eastern Turkey

It is a real sea. So huge, blue and beautiful lake! There is a nice boat trip to the island, where you can have a nice walk. Love it!
Mariia D — Google review
High altitude lake in Turkey with salt but very clear water and picturesque shores which makes driving around it a real pleasure. You can always stop for lunch or just a short break.

Akdamar Island

Mentioned on
3 lists
Island
Nature & Parks
Akdamar Island, the largest in Lake Van, is home to a historic 10th-century church with richly carved stone walls depicting Old Testament scenes and figures. The island hosts a religious ceremony at the church once a year and now serves as a museum. Despite some complaints about cleanliness and entry fees, visitors find the island's history and peaceful atmosphere worth the trip. The stunning mountain scenery adds to its allure, making it an ideal spot for a half-day visit.
One of the most well maintained antique church I’ve seen. The trip os beautiful as you take a boat and enjoy the view. Nice cafe and souvenir store on the island. To get there is tricky. You must drive to the port with enough time since they need at least 12 people per boat. We went at 15:00 and departed at 16:40 which in this case it was the last ferry. So don’t be confident you’ll make it in low season, give yourself enough time.
Oz M — Google review
It is a really amazing place, but very dirty. All the trails have garbage everywhere. The signs to the viewpoints are only in Turkish. The toilets are disgusting. The boat trip to the island was 160 Turkish Lira, and the fee for the island was 12 euro. No group discount. Only cash.
Mirabela ( — Google review
The boat requires 12 pax and above to ferry across. It's recommended to come early at 9.30 am. The parking lot is available by the highway and pier. You may need more than an hour on the island, so make sure you ask the boat operator if you can stay longer and return on another boat than the one you came with. There are kiosks and souvenir shops along with a small cafe at the pier. There is a monastery, a church, a lighthouse, a recreational park on the island, among other things. Excellent spots for photo shoots and trekking.
Fahmey E — Google review
Short boat ride to the island where you can enjoy nice views on the lake and surroundings, a small and interesting church.
Raffaele G — Google review
An absolutely stunning, must see island outside of Van in eastern Turkey.
Curtis H — Google review
Wonderful island, amazing history, peaceful during the week. The dance party boat is terrible. Island entry price of 290pp is way too steep, (especially when it should include an audio guide which they only have in Turkish.) That's the normal entry price for adults, BTW, not just foreigners. Saw plenty of locals paying that. Still...absolutely worth the half day trip. Take swimming gear, picnic go early, and take an afternoon boat back. Magic.
LaurasTravelTales — Google review
We went there on a weekday (around 11am) and had to wait more than half an hour to get on the boat (they are leaving when they gather around 15 people). The boat ride takes around 20 minutes. Since we are foreigners, we paid 12€ per person to access the island (after paying 225tl for the boat ride). The island itself is small, but it offers great views and the church in the middle is very well kept. There’s also a small cafe and souvenir shop.
Alice P — Google review
12€ entrance fee for international people. The island is small but offers nice views. You need to get the boat to get there which leaves only when 15 people are here. The return ticket costs 225TL.

Akdamar Church

Mentioned on

Church
Sights & Landmarks
The Akdamar Kilisesi, a remarkable medieval cathedral situated on an island in Lake Van, is a stunning example of Armenian architecture. Constructed by King Gagik Artzruni in 921, the church boasts intricate carvings depicting biblical scenes that are considered some of the finest works of Armenian art. Although little remains of the palace and monastery built alongside it, the church walls remain in excellent condition.
Amazing view , amazing island 🏝️ The Van lake seems amazing and ferry trip was very fun as well , you can go to the cafe and have your best turkish coffee ever as well
Ezgi K — Google review
Absolutely stunning place! Akdamar Island is incredibly peaceful and beautifully maintained. The scenery is breathtaking, and the serenity of the surroundings makes it a perfect spot to relax and reflect. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the Van region.
Baris C — Google review
Beautiful 10th-century church, though the outside is much more remarkable than what’s left of the frescos on the inside. The entrance fee is EUR 12 except for local residents. I didn’t have to pay for the boat over, but I am not sure whether the ride was included or whether somehow they forgot to charge.
Sebastian K — Google review
It is a beautiful place, but very different than expected. The trails were fenced and only a very limited part of the island was accessible. When you arrive by ferry they allow you to be on the island for 1 hour. As a non Turkish citizen you have to pay 12 euros to get access to the island. I would not recommend going here. The part that was most fun was the ferry trip. The island itself has become a tourist rip-off.
Debora R — Google review
I liked everything except the dirty toilets, otherwise; I would give 5 stars. Some people say that you pay extra money when you get to the island but its not extra money, if you have a museum card, you dont pay any money. The card is cheap and valid for a year. The island is worth seeing.
Nida F — Google review
Try to avoid coming here in the middle of the summer if it is possible, but otherwise this island is a great experience. There are walking trails to take in the beauty of the island and lake Van, and the jewel is the 1000 year old Armenian church. There is also a gift shop and tea house on the island, perfect for resting.
Nicholas U — Google review
the island itself is beautiful, but the entrance fee is ridiculous. 12 euros for entering the church and no ways to explore the island is definitely not worth it. I think in the past you were able to see more of the island, but now there are only a few small trails with fences. So..... don't go!
Twan F — Google review
This is another breathtaking place. If it is winter with lots of snow and below -20 kind of arctic cold then make sure there is a boat waiting for you otherwise you have to wait until they have enough passenger to justify the ride in that weather (no blame ). But it is worth every minute of your struggle so no matter the roadblocks, do whatever you can and go there. Locals say spring time is another story to visit the place with all the surrounding almond trees in bloom so i guess we will have to come back and gladly so 😉

Very nice and clean. We went to another cat villa and it had a bad smell and was more expensive. This place is very clean and the people are friendly. Cool magnets too!
Zakiya C — Google review
If you love cats, this place is a must-visit! There are so many beautiful white cats, each with different coloured eyes. It’s truly a surreal experience! The atmosphere is peaceful and relaxing, and it’s one of the most affordable ways to unwind. For a small fee, you can buy cat food and enter the main enclosure, where you’ll get the chance to feed and interact with the cats up close. All the cats were calm and friendly during our visit, and even with a large group of schoolchildren there, the space remained family friendly and welcoming. There’s also a gift shop on-site offering a range of souvenirs, from magnets to snacks and more. Making it easy to take a little piece of the experience home with you.
Mert A — Google review
Definitely worth coming to see the world renowned Van cats, that even astronaut Kate Rubin has. A gift from Turkish government for taking beautiful photos of Van lake from space for the photography competition. I wish the male with black hair at the entrance was more welcoming and helpful. This is my second time coming: and while the first time he was just cold, this time he was not helpful in taking the entrance payment (20lira) via pos. In fact, he just ignored my interest to buy extra meal(50lira) to feed the cats that my children were eager to do.
Bermet K — Google review
The idea is nice, 10 for ticket, 65 for feeding. The staff was very nice and helpful (like everyone we met in Turkey) But! There are too many cats in the main cage, they are bored and stressed out. Hissing and hiting each other, even I was scared to approach to avoid bites. Please add toys to engage them and divide them to different rooms, they are living beings that need their space. It was hard to watch for me, unfortunatelly.
Janka — Google review
Fabulous research centre protecting these beautiful Van Cats and so well kept. The facilities for the cats are wonderful - dining rooms, play rooms, sleeping rooms, tunnels between them all and great outside enclosed areas too.
Suzan O — Google review
The place could be a good experience for a lot of things also can be better. For so many cats not enough space. Cats are kind of squeezed inside. But with good intentions. Good luck.
Vera S — Google review
Cats were very well cared for and had plenty of places to get away from visitors if they wanted to! Lovely little gift shop, 30 to entrance. Toilets were next door in a very interesting antique/jewellery shop. Well worth a visit!
Halay1 — Google review
Too bad there are next to no explanations about the cats, their history, characteristics, and what the research center does about them. You see the cats in big cages that’s it (indeed the entrance fee is pretty cheap). Confusing as to how and whether you can get inside with the cats (some people filming for YouTube appeared to have had special treatment …).
