Alfred Nobels Björkborn

Museum

We find Björkborn Manor incredibly interesting and charming. The property and the displayed items and furniture are very thoughtfully curated and we did learn a lot.. Impressive highlight - the collection of wonderful carvings on a lot of the furniture. We have visited the museum on a bank holiday and had private english speaKing guide and she was exceptionally kind and knowlegable!
DESISLAVA D — Google review
Awesome experience Mr Nobel stayed here for 3 years his house is converted to a museum and saw his beautiful picture and the story around his life was wonderful to hear. It's located on very beautiful place and besides his companies and his lab. We saw all his inventions and it was amazing. It's a must visit place in karlskoga as this place was very near to his heart. The most iconic thing are the tanks.
Viral S — Google review
Very nice place! but as I got to know from the guide it’s only three summers that Alfred Nobel have been living in the place, so there is no too much to see. My favorite was the lab that he built there, I will try to put som photos.
M.B S — Google review
I expected a lot, but was very dissappointed, especially by the cost. The entrance fee is waaaaay too high for what you get, snd you have to pay extra for the fun part … the experiments. The house is nice, but not very special and the laboratory is ok, but NOT worth the entrance fee.
Tom B — Google review
Very interesting place with many fascinating stories to read about and listen to. The guides speak excellent English and signage is available in English as well as Swedish. The museum is beautifully furnished and the tour is very exciting with many stories about Nobel and his family told about different periods of his life. The laboratory building is also very well presented and has examples of the Nobel prizes and dinnerware out. There’s also a cafe available and a gift shop. Really enjoyed our visit and would recommend to anyone.
Triin M — Google review
The museum was very nice, highly recommend the tour. The guide is very knowledgeable and tells the story very entertaining. We went to the 2 pm English spoken tour 😀 The experiment area at the laboratorium was good fun as well, even for adults 😁
Iris B — Google review
I didn't know much about Alfred Nobel or his family. I didn't realise how his idea for prizes was opposed by all the institutions, and I didn't realise he was so clear about peace.

Very interesting and fascinating place. You will learn lots of untold stories about Nobel prize and Alfred Nobel.

(Translated by Google) Closed so food and service I can't say anything about. The place is beautifully located with a nice view down to the lake, lovely garden and benches to sit outside at. Cool architecture, with the slightly unusual design language and colorful roof. Was at the exhibition in 1992 in Seville so really nice to see the house again in this environment. (Original) Stängt så mat och tjänst kan jag inte säga något om. Platsen är vacker belägen med fin utsikt ner mot sjön, härlig trädgård och bänkar att sitta utom vid. Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Sandgrund Lars Lerin is a riverfront gallery in Karlstad, Sweden, dedicated to the captivating works of contemporary watercolor artist Lars Lerin. Lerin is celebrated for his legendary watercolor and oil paintings, graphic arts, and mesmerizing photographs. The gallery showcases his phenomenal watercolor landscapes as well as other works such as oil paintings, drawings, collages, and photographs from his travels around the world.
I'm not a huge fan of art but visited the gallery whilst on holiday in the area whilst staying with my sister. And what a delight! I was staggered by the artist's hand, such talent and even more special knowing he's a local chap too. I've read some of the other reviews and yes, glass covers so make viewing some pictures slightly awkward because of the glare, and the spot lights do shine a bit annoyingly on others, but neither of these 2 factors spoilt the artist's effect or removed any of the enjoyment of admiring the exhibits. I was, by the end, totally in awe of Mr Lars Lerin. I understand from my sister, that the exhibits change during the course of the year to help keep the gallery interesting for those who like to visit regularly. There was an exhibition space for admire artist, oil paintings, which actually I didn't enjoy so much, because of Lars work being so amazing! I actually thought the gallery space and manner of hanging pictures on the wall with nails added to the experience. Little coffee shop incorporated is a great addition.
Tracey B — Google review
Great art museum if you like Lars Lerin! Free 3hrs parking for motorhomes (just ask for a parking permit when paying the entrence fee, and make sure to park in the right area).
Kajsa L — Google review
Impressive artworks by Lars Lerin, but the museum should be organized a bit better and give some info on what is displayed
Ludovica S — Google review
Love his works! Museum ok, but I wish the pictures could be hung up properly. Some artworks were just stapled directly to a shabby wall.
Line S — Google review
Very nice that Lars Lerin got his own museum, its really interesting to learn more about his life. His paintings are just not my type of art because he mostly uses very dark colours like black, grey or dark blue.
Sarah S — Google review
A lovely surprise. Modern art that I love. It has separated after different topics..and one even for gay people. Loved it very much
Kjell L — Google review
Although the work of Lars Lerin is very prolific and interesting, the Sandgrund gallery/museum is a total disaster in term of exhibiting art pieces. No signage, no information, no curating what so ever. The lighting is extremely bad as it looks like a basic office space, the art pieces aren’t protected, most of the time nailed directly on the wall ( damaging the paper irremediably) or placed in between bad quality glass (which is sometime broken) A ladder or some trash cans seem to be forgotten here and there, and not to talk about the horrible plywood walls where the art pieces are hanged: poorly repainted, some holes, old plaster, tape... I find it crazy to pay an entrance fee for such a poor way of showing art.
Jérôme M — Google review
Nice and big art gallery. I like the place and the paintings.

Located near the library on Sandgrundsudden, Värmlands Museum is a captivating attraction split between two distinct buildings. The museum's multimedia displays offer an immersive journey through local history and culture from ancient times to the present day, covering topics such as music, the river, forests, and textiles. With over 40,000 well-preserved artifacts and 9,000 artworks on display, visitors can explore the city's rich heritage through photographs and interactive exhibits.
Great small art museum with a permanent collection about life and artists from the region, however during my visit they had a retrospective of Jāzeps Grosvald's fascinating life drawing in the midst of WWII and an excellent exhibit of modern artist Kristina Jansson whose work was stunning.
Brent E — Google review
An ambitious and mainly well-designed museum (with all info in the historical exhibition in both Swedish and English) where a few too many spelling errors, missing props, technical issues, and vandalised signs lessen the visitor's experience. Also far, far too cold in the exhibition halls (historical artifacts may require it I guess, but why in a photo display?). Good taste in exhibition material, though.
Simon L — Google review
They should have had more about Karlstad history, I think the art museum was boring. Lars Lerin is far better
Kjell L — Google review
There are some art work by artists and impressive thing is each artist has his or her own place to show or exhibit what he likes to. Also museum has some clues about how life starts in karlstad.
Afsheen A — Google review
Nice museum with very different things to see and do (for kids, go to the second floor). Library closed for maintenance (19 aug 2021). Clean toilets. Free lockers. Nice museumshop en good restaurant. Visit will take between 2 and 3 hours. Entry free of charge for people younger then 25 years.

The park features walking trails that wind through forests and meadows, leading to Naturum Varmland nature center where visitors can explore the natural environment and climb a watch tower for birdwatching.
Lovely place with lots of activities for young and old. Take the train to learn more about the park.

Very fun area with a lot of beautiful sights like a cool museum, great waffle lunch, and nice overgrown areas
Erik T — Google review
A big and beautiful park for all the family. You find animals, playgrounds, a fountain, café, kiosk, and restaurant. There is a beach where you can swim, or you can go for a walk in the woods. Toilettes around the park. In winter you can ice skate! You can even bring your own food and grill it 😁
Sissel D — Google review
A big park and plenty of parking spaces (free of charge). Well kept and clean. You can take a small train which takes you around the park. There are few animals and coffee places. You can also enjoy kids theatre, just make sure to check their schedule first. A nice playground to enjoy for kids under age of 9.
Camilla C — Google review
Great outdoor parc. With areas for recreation and fun. Nice playground for the young. Also a small zoo and nature path. Also old buildings and a "nature room" with information regarding the local nature and wild life.

The best place for kids. Although parents are hot in the sun, children do not want to leave. There are many animals and the scenery is very nice.

Mårbacka

Historic Sites
Mårbacka, the former residence of renowned author Selma Lagerlof, is a significant cultural site in Varmland. The estate, located in the picturesque area of Sunne, preserves Lagerlof's personal decor and belongings, offering visitors an intimate look into her life. Additionally, Alsters Herrgard near Karlstad is another notable memorial estate dedicated to beloved Swedish poet Gustaf Froding.
A very nice place to spend an afternoon. The guided tour is well worth the money (English tours at 11.30 and 14.30 during the summer), and the food in the cafe was surprisingly good. An attempt to recreate the oat pancake using some oat flour bought from the shop was not a great success, unfortunately. The estate has many ramps, so should be accessible for those using wheelchairs or who struggle with steps. Some of the translations in the exhibit in the workers' building at the bottom of the estate could do with redoing, as they read rather strangely.
Adam R — Google review
We visited Mårbacken with three children 2-10 y.o. All had something to do and the place was nice, exhibition about Swedish schools in the past was interesting. If you're near enough there place certainly worth a visit.
Tim — Google review
Marbacka was a recommendation from a Swedish lady we met on our road trip through Sweden. If you plan to go there, do the tour through the main building. Otherwise you won't be able to go inside and see how Selma Lagerlöf lived there. We learned a lot about her and were impressed by her character and life. Plus the cafe offers a great snack/sandwich which we have never eaten before: a soft bread with potato salad, cucumber and tomato. It was delicious 😋
Jen — Google review
Very beautiful place. You can there for a long time widen
Roland A — Google review
Nice little place where you can visit the house of the writer Selma Lagerlöf
Rick I — Google review
Beautiful house and garden. Guided tour was really good 👍
Caroline — Google review
This is one of the places you just can't miss if you're in Värmland. It is a nice park and a building worth visiting. You can get a good cup of coffee or even a lunch here but do not miss a guided visit inside the building. The visit provides a nice introduction to the life of Selma Lagerlöf at Mårbacka but also the family history and the life of the employees at the time. Remember to book the visit in advance! During summer there are always a lot of people visiting this place.
Mikael N — Google review
Very nice place, great guided tour. No photos allowed inside the house. I was surprised the other houses do not host more interesting exhibitions. The drive to the house on the eastern side was beautiful

The park features Sweden's largest climbing forest for kids and temporary exhibitions in the attached warehouse. Visitors can enjoy the picturesque surroundings and various playgrounds suitable for children of all ages.
Surprisingly beautiful park filled with sculptures and beautiful landscaping. There is also a nice play area for kids.

Very nice park with great playgrounds
Johan W — Google review
This is an unforgettable place with its beauty in the spring and summer months. Flowers bloom near wonderful structures and statues that tell a story. There’s even a few different things playgrounds for the kids of all ages. My little one and hubby went of a raft that crossed the water with pulling a rope. There’s a race track for the kids, and a jumping thingy. If you want, you can pretend to be a Viking and wander on the ship with you little one. I plan on visiting this place again!
Dani W — Google review
Ok so this place has wonderful flowers to look at. You can easily spend a few hours here relaxing and taking a fika. Also good to know you can go in right before they close and stay as long as you want. So if you see they are only open for 30 minutes more it’s fine! Get there and get in and your free to stay for as long as you like. No fika available though haha. We ate as soon as we arrived. I had a baked potato with shrimps and my partner had Västerbottenpaj. Mine was super tasty. Her’s was good. I’m happy I got the baked potato and she was jealous. So let that be a rip for you on what to choose haha. Really good to visit during the summer. Worth the wait and really let the plants grow before you go. We went in late June and it was beautiful. You can also shop for plants there as well.
Justin C — Google review
Its a Big Park where you can walk surrounded by flowers and trees. And the children loved the playground and Nils Holgerson.

Sights & Landmarks
Sliperiet konsthall & Gastronomi is a unique establishment housed in a historic wood grinding mill and pulp factory dating back to 1903. It now serves as both a restaurant and an art gallery. The food at the restaurant is highly praised, making it a worthwhile stop for lunch or dinner. While the art exhibition can be hit or miss, it offers an interesting display featuring various artists with detailed information provided.
Wonderful to see art from a world class artist in such a small Swedish town. Really recommend the visit and take the time to consume the art and be in the moment.
Albert G — Google review
The environment, both surrounding and within Sliperiet, is incredibly beautiful. The food was delicious, and the staff were fantastic. We were served by a guy named Viggo, who was exactly the kind of person you want help from and who really enhanced the experience – the right person in the right place. The children were also treated very kindly from Viggo, which was appreciated. Amenities include: * Free parking * Restrooms * Art exhibition * Wheelchair and stroller accessibility
Tina S — Google review
Nice gallery. Indeed not completely worth the entrance fee but the current exhibition was nice. Restaurant also very special.
Bart B — Google review
I highly recommend Sliperiet. The food was fantastic as was the service and friendliness of the staff. Great exhibition on as well. Id go back in a heart beat.
Gavin H — Google review
The food is really good, surprisingly good actually, and well worth a stop. Go for a starter and a main course is my recommendation. The exhibition is very much a hit or miss thing, this year, for me, it was a clear miss. I do find it expensive to have to pay for it when having food there, and they should consider allowing free entrance of you have lunch or dinner there.
Fredrik H — Google review
We visited the place this afternoon. For a start you are charged 80 kr just to enter a building where there are two expositions, one on the ground floor and another on the second where what you see can be of your liking or not. In our case it was very disappointing. On the ground floor some of the paintings or photographs or whatever they were, are literally invisible because they are black. Yes. Just a big black square. According to the lady at the entrance you have to put your hands around your eyes (as if you had hors blinkers) to see them. Seriously, it reminded me the tale "The Emperor´s New Clothes" ("Kejsarens nya kläder" H.C. Andersen). Absolutely ridiculous. On the second floor we could "admire" aquarelles that according to the lady at the gate where almost as good as those of Lars Lerin which for us, after watching them, amounts to say that Markoolio´s music is as good as Mozart´s. Sorry if you love Markoolio. The prices, however, were typical of works by Mozart. If you are not rich do not even think about stepping in such a place. On top of that the food seemed to me very expensive and I am a chef myself. Honestly. I cannot recommend it.
Alfonso F — Google review
We went to see the art gallery. It was a very interesting and good display, there were several artists represented. They have a packet of information on the artists to know a bit more about them. Overall, a lot of space to look at the art, but not many pieces.

This is our 2nd canoe trip with Arvika Kanot. It's is truly an amazing experience. You will enjoy beautiful landscapes though Swedish lakes and forests. I also would like to highlight Arvika Kanot local crew behaviour. They are very nice people and super friendly. By talking to them, you can see that they are committed with the region and sustainable tourism model. Everybody has the right to enjoy this place as long as our impact is minimum.

We did with our kids (6&8 year old boys) the three day Koppom-Ingestrand Tour. It was really nice, and everyone enjoyed this challenge in the wild! Nevertheless, the information for a family with young kids could have been a bit more specific, specially for the landcrossings. As we decided for the really nice Tour B, one landcrossings was on the edge of being to intense (3 hours, up and down on country roads..) doing the tour midle/end of August we were surprised by the temperature drop at night to 5°. Take thermos, appropriate sleeping bags and woolheads. We paddled from about 11am-19pm and stopped where roughly indicated. In total great fun!
Matthias G — Google review
We had an amazing time canoeing at Arvika. The staff was very helpfull both via e-mail prior to our arrival and on site. Along with the canoe, we rented the tent and the food box. The tent is warm and dark (very important during the summer in Sweden) and the food box was full of easy and delicious meals. Both excellent and worth renting. The tour itself was wonderfull. Spending a whole week almost alone in nature was an experience we hope to repeat in the future.
Pauline S — Google review
We made the glaskogen canou tour. Perfect, everything was perfect! Beautiful nature and good equipment. Inspiring people there to. We certainly will come back!
Colin H — Google review
This is the place to book your canoe adventure! Super friendly staff, reply fast to e-mail and are very helpful. They even set up our tents at Ingestrands Camping because we arrived after 5pm. We rented all camp gear, food and canoes with Arvika kanot center and it was great! We did the 7 day Värmeln tour in 6 days since we did not have more time, but it was beautiful and very doable. Visited Klässbol for pizza and an amazing vegan lunch at kaffe Kvarnen. Had all different sorts of sweet pies at Annelie & Cattis café. We swam in the lake and camped on the multiple islands which all had fire places to keep ourselves warm, because it was quite cold! Tip: bring water sandels/shoes!
Isa J — Google review
Great experience, the team is very nice! We rent a canoe for the Glaskogen trip. They help you a lot before departure, with advices and places you should see or avoid. The trip is well organized, the nature reserve is gorgeous! Not too many people on the tour, which is pleasant. The canoe and the equipment are good, you feel safe using it. Be careful still, you have to carry your canoe from time to time! Be sure you are able to do so (difficult for children I think), it is heavy, the paths are sometimes trail paths, and it is for several kilometers. We are good walkers and very sportive, and it was not easy. The only thing I could say to make the experience even better, may be for the staff to be a bit more present when people return, we felt a bit alone at this moment. Anyway, thank you so much for the experience and the trip, keep going, it was great, we even think about coming back to do another tour!

Would definitely recommend a trip here. We were 5 guys who took the lilläven trip an added an ekstra day to have 8 days in total(7 nights). The first part of the trip was really good, with small rivers and small lakes and plenty of places to camp. We were all alone for the first 4-5 days. The last three days we got out on the big Glaskogen lake. This is not as fun, but you can still find good places to sleep. We had the wind in our faces, so rowing was tough and time consuming. I would however recommend this trip for adult groups. Some of the passages where you have to get the canoe out of the water are pretty tough. But it is definitely worth it to go for the long trip, if you want the trip for yourselves.

+ very friendly, relaxed and routined staff - heavily overpriced. one aspect that annoyed me especially was that when we booked for a third person in the same canoe we only got a chair, no barrel for the third persons stuff. had to pay for that one extra. i really think this should be included in the price for a third person. - rather populated area, no wilderness feeling (we did the Fåfängan tour, but heard the same from people we met who did the tours Köla, Värmeln and Jösse and were disappointed about this part) - quite a few land transports that were by far the most exhausting part about the tour (see tour descriptions)

Magical Place you should visit when you have the opportunity, let the place show you around, ask for pizza-day in the bakery and come back if you can make it...
Julian K — Google review
It has lost a lot of qualities. Now you are not allowed to see the machines and some floors are closed. Yes, there's the art and the artisans and that's great but the history of the place is more or less lost. It's a lovely place but there's a lot of lovely places in the whole area so... yeah, I don't think I'll be returning soon.

🌲🧱💚🏭🌲 "Bruket" (the old factory) that once was the reason Fengersfors got its name and the reason people moved and settled down here, still has that effect even if it ceased its operations in the 70s. Since 2002 when craftspeople and artists took over, the place has been booming with activities and has been attracting more handy and creative people to move here. It's at its busiest during the warmer months of the year, when tourists come here from a far to visit the galleries of @notquitefengersfors, the bakery @brukets_godaste, the café @notquitecafe, @glupskpadalsland, Not Quites shop or just to experience this little beauty in the middle of nowhere 🌲🧱💚🏭🌲

Modern art combined with industrial history and good food. Very nice place to spend a few hours when you are in the neighbourhood. Free entry, high quality food for fair prices. Nice and cool inside on a hot day.
Thomas A — Google review
Difficult to rate this. The art is WAY to "out there" for me to understand or interpret it and even difficult to get an idea of what the art is supposed to be. I assume that people who like this kind of art or expressionalism will love it but for me the exhibition was a bit too much. The old factory itself, the bakery and the shop are beautiful, unfortunately the pottery and wood carving (my favourite) were closed when we were there. Located in a beautiful part of Fengersfors, close to nature yet so far away from the town, the peace and calm that surrounds the area is astounding.

The cafe/restaurant is the highlight of Not Quite, Kalle & Katinka that is in charge of the place plus the staff serves the most delicious food and pastries you can imagine. The quality and service are top class and it is really a hidden gem in Dalsland. A must-try for everyone passing by! Highly recommend the smoked salmon and the burrata and tried my way through all the desserts which are all homemade. 5/5!

Streamlined retail gallery featuring diverse, everyday stores, plus cafes & restaurants.
Super shopping centre with a good selection of shops and a lot of good offers. It would be nice if they had some charging stations for electric car. There are few charging stations but they do not work :-( Update December 2024: durian this visit I was glad to find that now is possible to charge an EV using the new several charging station ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

Best mall in Varmland. The toilets both male and female were smelly😅.
Mob S — Google review
I have been happy with the mall itself, but the security guards there are terrible!! I was dropping off my wife, and immediately he parks his cars infront of me and writing down my license plate number. Last time at the NORD location, he came up behind me and honked his horn, just so he could park there himself.. I guess it's okay for the security guards to park and leave their car where ever and leave it there.. But for youre customers, no way... I feel that should be take care of, how can they act like that? So next time I will be driving around instead of stopping at the sideline.

Fredriksten fortress

Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the charming town of Halden, Fredriksten Fortress is a remarkable 17th-century structure steeped in military history. This impressive stone fortress spans an expansive area and features various elements such as storehouses, bastions, and deep passageways that invite exploration. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape while wandering through its well-preserved rooms. The fortress also serves as a vibrant cultural hub, hosting events and festivals throughout the year that bring history to life.
A must see in Halden, a big place with history, legends and spectacular view over Halden and surrowndings. There are enough parking places, a golf spot, a museum and you can drive the car right next to the fortress. It has a lot of places to see, you can see some rooms and it is so well preserved. They organize events there.
Ralteo — Google review
Fantastic Fortress in the top of the mountain in Halden with great panoramic views of the surrounding area. It is extremely difficult to believe that battles were fought here! Even harder to believe that a Swedish king died there! Bring comfortable clothing and good shoes. The walks can be difficult and the acess to some areas hard. Good parking! Extremely recommended!
Luis L — Google review
It was early morning when I arrived here. The color of the roofs, perfectly suited for mid-October, was lovely, and the atmosphere was wonderful. I felt like a Norwegian soldier guarding the fortress, as if I had stepped back to 1807. Though it is now a symbolic fortress protecting Halden, its spirit was very much alive. It was even better because the most delicious and magnificent "Restaurant Curtisen" is also located in Halden. When I return to Halden, I will visit again and have a delicious and dignified meal at "Restaurant Curtisen". Wait for me, "Restaurant Curtisen."

Nice calm historical place. If you like abandoned castles and fortress with rich history this might be the right place with stunning views from top.
Muhammad B — Google review
The fortress is a remarkably well-preserved and impressive example of 17th-century period architecture. Built by Denmark-Norway after the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, it carries both historical and cultural significance, standing as a replacement for the lost Bohus fortress. Named after King Fredrik III, it not only reflects the military engineering of its time but also shaped the identity of the nearby town, which bore the name Fredrikshald for centuries. Walking through its grounds today offers a unique glimpse into history, with its strong walls, commanding views, and the sense of resilience it represents. It remains a beautifully maintained site and a valuable monument to Scandinavian heritage.

All areas are very clean and tidy. No bad scent and well kept place and good place for family and friends friend weekend visit. There are also available 3 hours and 1 day free parking places with permit card right around the place.

The slides and pools were great and fun for kids, but we felt the spa options were quite limited—especially for toddlers. Hairdryers were weak, so it's a good idea to bring your own. Sauna choices were fewer than expected, and the showers felt a bit awkward. Since we visited during the holidays, it was very crowded, and the changing rooms were often messy—understandably, as not everyone cleaned up after themselves.
Kristina P — Google review
Always nice place for a bath. The options in pools is great and should have something for everyone :) Food is also good.

Great place to spend time with family and friends. Clean water, tidy place and neat everywhere. More than 5 separate pools for different ages and activities. Jacuzzi and sauna also present. With Bigger slides for adults and smaller slides for kids. Parking, Cafeteria, advanced locker and shower area, they do sell swim suit, cap, Goggles and flipflops. But less staffs and unable to contact them at ease. Overall excellent place.
Raji B — Google review
Great place to visit with families, swing, eat, relax, spa. Much fun for the kids. Nice service. Like the new lock system. No need to bring own lock. You might have problems if you forgot something and need to exit building due to the new lock. But not a problem. The price is a bit high for a family to visit, unfortunately. Go a bit later to avoid crowded guests. Will be back☺ hope they will set the price lower for families.
Nhan A — Google review
I was disappointed to visit this swimming pool. The whole complex looks rather old, not modern at all, starting with lockers and showers, to the three tube-slides and the pool itself, with not very clean and clear water, no tiles on the walls or bottom of the pool. Lots of children visiting the pool (main one, unfortunately) and jumping into it from the springboards and the diving tower, making a lot of noise and blocking all lanes but ONE for those who want to swim. After kids are gone, still only two lanes are available for swimming. The two saunas (one dry and one damp) do work, but again, are old-fashioned and not really pleasant to visit. There is a nice warm-water small pool and a Jacuzzi outdoors, worth recommending, though.

Whether you're a train enthusiast or not, this center offers an incredible experience with captivating sights and a delightful ride through a miniature town on a trackless train.

Nice but not very bright, flashy and modern theme park for the kids and adults who are train lovers and wants to see mini models of towns and cities and trains running between them. With every ticket, kids get free waffel or hotdog. I found it was located at a bit congested location. Many visitors cannot move freely that makes the experience a bit bitter.

Top experience – Rusalka, 2025. The music and orchestra were so beautiful > it was beyond anything words can describe. The acoustics of the main hall were designed with expert consultation, using oak paneling and wave-like surfaces to create world-class sound. The architecture > I love how it lets visitors walk on top of the building, blurring the boundary between structure and nature.

Gorgeous architecture with impressive views. The building seems symbolic of the surrounding fjords and the beauty of Norway. The steps to the roof are a gradual climb with many places to stop for children or those who need more breaks. It's wonderful to see such a new building be accessible, allowing mist everyone to experience Oslo’s beauty.

Went here to watch Eugen Onegin (Russian Opera), not sure I'm a huge fan of Opera though. But I can't rate the location low because of that! It's very nice inside, spacious and feels modern yet classic! Will come back to see maybe a Ballett instead. On the downside, the seats are very straight, and offer very little legspace, for me 195cm it was hard to find a good position to sit in for the almost 3 hours the play lasted. Therefore i give this a 4 only

Akershus Fortress

Sights & Landmarks
Akershus Fortress, originally built in the 13th century, was strategically positioned to protect Oslo from external threats. Over the years, it has evolved into a complex that includes a medieval castle, military fortress, Renaissance palace, and active military installations. The fortress also houses two military museums and hosts various events. While the castle is currently closed for renovations, visitors can still explore the sprawling complex and enjoy its historical significance.
I hadn’t really planned to visit Akershus Fortress, but I’m so glad I did. A beautiful piece of Oslo’s history with stunning views. Just make sure to wear comfy shoes—it’s not the best place for heels!

Penny G — Google review
Akershus Fortress is a medieval castle in Oslo, Norway, built during 1299 to protect the city. It has been a strategic fortress, a Renaissance palace, a jail and now it houses military barracks and the Norwegian Armed Forces. Historically speaking, Akershus successfully survived all sieges, primarily by Swedish forces. The immediate proximity of the sea was a key feature, wherein, the Norwegian commerce in that period, was by sea. Thus the fortress had become strategically important. So, whoever controlled Akershus fortress, actually ruled Norway. Later, however, Akershus surrendered without combat to Nazi Germany in 1940 when the Norwegian government evacuated the capital in the face of the unprovoked German assault on Denmark and Norway. The fortress was finally liberated in 1945, and was handed over to Terje Rollem. Presently, one has an option of touring the historical dungeons, Royal Mausoleum and enjoy scenic views of the city from its grounds, which are also used for events and ceremonies. We were thankfully guided by a very capable guide, upon our visit to the Fortress during July 2025. The entry is free for thr grounds but however, one has to pay for the priviledge of looking at the rest of the protected areas.
Neeru D — Google review
Visiting Akershus Fortress was one of the unexpected highlights of our time in Oslo. Perched right on the waterfront, this medieval castle-turned-fortress offers incredible panoramic views of the Oslo Fjord and harbor, and it’s only a short, easy walk from Karl Johans Gate. The grounds are open and free to explore, which makes it feel more like you’re wandering through living history than entering a formal museum. The atmosphere is calm and spacious, with winding stone paths, old ramparts, and a mix of well-preserved structures and open green areas. There’s plenty of signage in English, so even without a tour you can get a strong sense of the site’s layered history—from its origins as a royal residence in the 13th century to its role as a military stronghold and later, a World War II site. The contrast between the castle walls and the modern city skyline is striking, and it’s easy to spend an hour or two just exploring, taking photos, or finding a quiet spot to take in the view. If the weather is nice, I highly recommend visiting around late afternoon for great light over the fjord. It’s a peaceful and culturally rich stop that gives you a real sense of Oslo’s history without feeling overly touristy.
Jarred F — Google review
Good: ✅ The remnants of this fortress are very well preserved. ✅ The exterior corridors of this property make up an explorer’s paradise and it is completely free (no cost). ✅ The property is part ruins and part green space/park. ✅ There are many areas to enjoy the sun or shade. Walk, run, or chill—visits are easily tailored. ✅ Beautiful vistas throughout overlooking the bay. Caution: ❌ The property is both cliffside and hillside. It’s not a bad thing, just know that exploration requires the use of steps or steep trails. In summary, this is the crown jewel of downtown Oslo. There are plenty of pics to see what it is. If you’re into such, this place will deliver.

Oslo City Hall, also known as Radhuset, is a significant administrative center and public venue in Oslo. It houses the city council, administration, art galleries, and studios. Constructed between 1931 and 1950 by architects Arnstein Arneberg and Magnus Poulsson, it was inaugurated on May 15th, 1950.
what a pleasant surprise! Oslo Rådhus can be visited, and this is quite impressive. From the outside and the inside, it offers an original and unique architecture. Open to public, magnificent building, backing to the harbor/pier, a small garden on the side. Worth a visit and spending some time in and out of the building. In a walking distance to the Castle.
Patrick X — Google review
Oslo City Hall, located right next to the Nobel Peace Center and the waterfront, is one of the most striking buildings in the city. From the outside, its twin brick towers rise dramatically against the skyline, framed by the patterned stone plaza that leads you up toward its grand entrance. The approach alone is impressive — the symmetry, the waterfall features, and the sense of scale make it feel like you’re entering a truly important civic space. Inside, the mood shifts from monumental to unexpectedly vibrant. The central hall is vast, bathed in light, and filled with stunning murals that depict Norwegian history, culture, and everyday life in extraordinary detail. It’s both ceremonial and warm, a place that feels alive with stories. The murals are jaw-dropping in size and color — they stretch across the walls and almost overwhelm the senses in the best way. I especially appreciated how easy it is to access the building: free entry, minimal fuss, and plenty of space to linger without feeling rushed. It’s one of those sites that blends civic pride with genuine artistic wonder. If you’re visiting Oslo, this is absolutely worth a stop — whether you’re into architecture, history, or just want a moment to take in something grand and uniquely Norwegian.

Beautiful building with an even more amazing wall art interior! The building has free entry to visit but it can get busy so it can take a little time in the queue to get in. There is a security check before you go inside. Many beautiful art walls cover both levels of the building and in such a spectacular size! The big hall was being set up for event when we visited in the late afternoon. Nice clean bathroom just in the basement area.

Impressive building, happened to be the 75th anniversary when we visited. Not a ton to see since there was some government meeting in action upstairs. The murals inside and the floor itself are beautiful. Even if you can't make it inside (free entrance, by the way), the architecture and fountain out front are impressive enough to rate 5 stars. Don't miss the art under the covered walks along the courtyard sides, with placards telling the story of the art relating to Norwegian/Scandinavian folklore.

Visited Oslo City Hall and was genuinely impressed. The artwork and architecture tell a lot about Norway’s history and values, and the building is easy to explore. A calm, meaningful stop in the middle of the city.

Oslo Radhus or Oslo City Hall in Norway, facing Oslofjord, was finally completed in 1950 (started in 1931 to be precise, but slowing down during WW II in the interim period) to celebrate the city's 900th anniversary. It houses the city's council, administration and other municipal organizations. It also hosts the Nobel peace prize ceremony on the 10th of December each year, being the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel. Our visit during July 2025 resulted in our guide letting us know the main happenings there, however, the insides of the building, was just envisaged by us. I loved the beautiful adornment of the colourful flowers, swaying in their beds, on the other side, while we circled behind them.

Oslo City Hall is such a unique and elegant building. Its red brick architecture stands out with a strong and distinctive style, making it one of the city’s landmarks. The design is both modern and monumental, yet it has an artistic elegance that reflects Norwegian culture and history. A truly impressive place to visit in Oslo

The Fram Museum in Oslo is a captivating destination that showcases the 19th-century polar exploration ship, Fram, and features exhibits on various expeditions. This renowned vessel was utilized by the legendary explorer Roald Amundsen during his historic journey to the South Pole. The museum offers an immersive experience with northern lights shows and informative displays about Arctic and Antarctic explorers. Visitors can also enjoy a panoramic view from the top of the ship.
A real highlight of our visit to Oslo. The museum is amazing and the ship is awe inspiring. On entering the museum you receive a handy checklist of 4 things not to miss, which is essential if you're in a hurry to catch the ferry back to central Oslo. Don't miss the trapped in the ice experience or the second ship (through underpass) and the Flight to Remember film. Easy to get here on the number 30 bus or the ferry.

The Fram Museum was a great surprise. The ship itself is the main attraction and you can actually walk on board and get a sense of how tight things were during the polar expeditions. There’s a good mix of history and hands-on displays, so it never gets boring. The lighting and sound effects inside help set the atmosphere without feeling like a theme park. It’s both interesting and easy to follow even if you’re not a big history person. Worth the stop for sure.

The Fram Museum is a fantastic museum with a lot to offer. It takes you on a complete journey of the most thrilling of the Arctic expeditions of the 19th and 20th centuries. Being able to board the Fram is incredible and immersive - with audio and visual FX used to try and show you the surroundings that you would see if you were on this ship. One problem I had with this museum is it almost has too much information at your disposal. I found that going around, I was bombarded with different aspects of the history but the structure of the museum meant that I was confused as to where I was at in the timeline or why things had happened. I think it would be great if the museum was better laid out, maybe by starting by first introducing where the quest for exploring the Arctic came from and the people and expeditions that came before the Fram. Now this information actually does exist, but it exists in the tunnel that you find on the left as you enter, but I didn’t go down this path until after visiting the Fram. It would’ve been great to have this context before being thrown into the Fram expedition immediately. Another thing is that the first thing I started reading is about the boat Polar Station going to the Arctic soon… this didn’t feel as organised as it could be to me. It’s a weird thing to say that there’s too much information here, but it was difficult to retain information and consider it throughout the whole exhibition when it wasn’t laid out in a chronological way. Aside from this, the museum is really incredible. I recommend this for people of all ages!

Great museum. The main attraction is Amundsen's polar ship, the Fram. The ship is beautifully presented and can be viewed both inside and out. The rooms below deck are particularly impressive. Lots of information boards and films explain all the details of the expeditions. Absolutely fascinating and, for me, one of the best museums in the world.
Andreas S — Google review
Amazing visit, we just wanted to find a place for our visit in Oslo, never expected the museum. It turned out the museum was amazing and the polar expedition related story and knowledge totally grabbed our eyes! We enjoyed the time and had a lot of fun there.

This was a really interesting find. We hadn't planned it but found it when we went on the Hop on Hop off bus. Really interesting and different. Knew very little about Artic or Antarctic exploring and this museum just presented it all so well. Really very interesting.

We enjoyed the flight simmulator a lot. It was something different. Great to see the inside of ship and how things used to look and work. History is very interesting. Would recommend visiting this museum

Incredible! You can certainly get a good feel for everything about the Polar explorations and exploits if you only have a few hours. However for a comprehensive learning experience you can spend all day. My last visit was just the Fram and Kon Tiki, 6.5 hours total.

Sculpture museum
The Vigeland Park, located in Oslo, Norway, is a sculpture park and museum that showcases the works of renowned Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland. The park features over 200 granite and bronze sculptures by the artist, including entwined lovers, elderly couples, babies, and beggars. One of the most famous pieces is 'Sinnataggen' (Little Hot-Head), depicting a child in a bad mood.
One of the most beautiful and well-maintained parks I've ever seen, and the statues by a famous Norwegian sculptor make it even more unique. Indeed, the statues are so interesting and detailed that you can spend half a day in the park looking at them. The grounds are large with benches, paths, cafes, a small Oslo museum and more. It was a pleasure to walk there. One of Oslo's calling cards. Deserved. Be sure to visit

This is a truly beautiful place to visit. It’s perfect for a peaceful walk, relaxing, or just take some time to think. The sculptures are amazing — all created by one artist, which is really impressive and gives the park a special atmosphere. We visited in autumn, and the colors of the trees made everything even more stunning. The mix of art, nature, and calm vibes makes this park one of the highlights of Oslo. Definitely worth visiting! 🍂🌳🇳🇴

A really interesting place to walk through. The sculptures are everywhere and you kind of end up noticing new details the longer you look. It’s a quiet spot even when there are lots of people around, and the layout makes it easy to wander without any plan. The big monolith in the center is impressive up close. Good place for a relaxed walk, photos, or just sitting for a bit. Worth stopping by if you're in Oslo.

Super cool and interesting sculpture park! 🗿🗿🗿 It's a great park to walk around and even had a great running path. Some of the sculptures are so strange and some we had seen on the internet before 😂 great expressions and motions!

Vigeland Sculpture Park in Oslo, Norway. Gustav Vigeland 1869, born as Adolf Gustav Thorsen, was a Norwegian sculptor. Known for his power of creative imagination and in his productivity. He created Vigeland installation and made Frogner Park into Norway's most popular tourist attraction, leaving visitors with a unique experience of sculptured human forms. The Frogner Park, with a clean, green and gorgeous flowers, is a large outdoor setting for picnics and walks. Naturally, their is no fee to enter the Park. Don't miss a visit if you can.

In my opinion, one of the five most beautiful works of art ever created by Europe and its people. Proof that Europeans, as a civilization, are far more advanced than all the others in these times when engineers and doctors are being brought in from countries where people don’t even know how to use a toilet. Fascinating.

Vigeland Park is one of the highlights of my trip to Oslo. The park is beautiful, with plenty of nature spots combined with immersive art with a theme of humanity at its centre. The sculptures are very unique and feel like they have purpose with the rest of the park. It is very interesting that it feels like one big fascinating exhibition.

The Vigeland Museum, located in a former industrial setting, is an extraordinary and atmospheric museum showcasing the exceptional collection of sculptures, woodcuts, and drawings by renowned Norwegian artist Gustav Vigeland. The museum presents various sculptures and models created by the artist, including concepts that are now part of the iconic Vigeland Park in Oslo. Visitors can explore several rooms housing these remarkable works, some of which depict Vigeland's visions of heroes from sagas and Eddic poems.
Every year in December on the first Sunday of advent, the Vigeland Museum invites everyone for a free day at the museum. Complete with Christmas workshops for kids and guided tours in the apartment of Norway's top sculptor - Gustav Vigeland. The museum is Vigeland's former studio and residence, provided by the city in 1921 in exchange for all of his artwork. His ashes, self-designed bronze urn and burial monument are located in the tower of the museum.

Come to this museum before heading to the park! You'll get to see scale models, plaster replicas, and learn about Gustav Vigeland's process on his sculptures. It is much more fascinating to see about his works and what went into them before seeing the larger than life sculptures in the park. The Museum has all original works of Vigeland made from plaster, bronze, granite, marble, and including sketches. Scale models of what the park, and sculptures placements should have been. Worth the entry, and free with the Oslo Pass!
Christopher D — Google review
Fascinating museum containing the largest collection from Norway’s finest sculptor. Really worth a visit especially if you are intending on visiting the sculpture park as many of the designs used there can be seen throughout the development stage. Very interesting to see the development and maturing of vigeland’s work whilst his motifs and themes remained the same throughout !
Connor M — Google review
Incredible museum, all the sculpture work is incredible. The building is amazing too, make sure to visit the park nearby too.
Matthew H — Google review
I have never heard about Gustav Vigeland before my trip to Oslo, and I was really impressed. This museum is completely dedicated to this splendid artist. Vigeland Park, which is very close to museum, is the cornerstone of the whole life of sculptor. So if you have seen the park, which is totally free, you have seen almost all you can look at in this museum. But there are more works there, which are not related to park, some pieces of information. Though this all is pretty expensive if you visit this museum without Oslo Pass.
Roman M — Google review
Entrance is included with the Oslo pass. We visited after visiting the park and it was interesting to get the story behind how the park happened and learning about Vigeland's process and history. Not a lot of people here when we visited. The museum is a big square, so you can just follow it around in a loop, and it's all one level. We spent about 45 minutes here.

I visited the Vigilendo Sculpture Park for the first time 24 years ago. It is a place worth visiting twice in a lifetime: in youth and in adulthood. It is also worth visiting the Vigilend Museum, the former workshop of the artist, where the sculptures were born, located next to the park, once in a lifetime. A great idea in the museum was a contemporary art hall with changing exhibitions. A special experience was a guided tour of the sculptor's living quarters and a visit to the mausoleum, which we booked spontaneously.
Eurika B — Google review
I found the Vigeland Museum quite interesting. The sculptures are truly impressive and beautifully crafted, offering a unique glimpse into Gustav Vigeland's artistic vision. I spent about an hour exploring the exhibits, and it was a captivating experience.

A former 1850's military fortress & batteries on an island in Oslofjord accessible by ferry.
A stunning quiet way to spend a couple of hours here to explore the island. Essentially it is 2 mini islands linked by a small bridge. The north side is a scenic spot to take instagramable pictures the other is where the fortress is located. Small museum in the fortress itself. Good to spend 1-2 hours here. Free to enter just buy the ferry tickets

Great experience. I travelled independently whereas most people seem to go as part of a tour. Had a chat with a couple of friendly guides who were most informative and justly proud of the brave Norwegian garrison who sank the German cruiser Blucher. Good museum within the fort itself and no restrictions on access to the Fort guns which defended Oslo so well in April 1940. There is also a hotel on the island again with friendly staff. Highly recommended.
JOHN A — Google review
Deep history, stunning views. My deep respect to colonel Erikson for his courage and bravery in 1940. Sad that the museum looks as if it is stuck in time. At that, the fact that the fortress is free to enter is an important indicator that the museum regards keeping the memory as its main task

Historic 19th century island fortress, famous for the sinking of the German heavy cruiser Blucher. Set in a very beaufitul location in Oslofjord, accessible by ferry. Interesting museum, including a video display of the fateful sinking, with a display of heavy artillery pieces in their emplacements around the grounds. Nice island to stroll around and enjoy the fantastic views.

A true gem -everything is well-kept the amount and quality of ww2 material is unbelievable. And you can take a nice walk outside :)

Visited during Day trip to Drøbak. Museum appeared unmanned and all displays are only in Norwegian, so would recommend use of provided audio stations or google lens. Museum is a up a hill, and from our experience probably takes longer than the hour we had on the island to experience. If you like WW2 history and walking, it’s definitely worth it.

Nice and comfortable trip takes you very close to the airport and saves time and drive especially in the winter where the roads are very slippery, the views when you are on the ferry are magnificent the only thing I didn’t like is the price because I think it was a little high
M.B S — Google review
I’ve taken two trips daily, week on/week off, for the past 8 years—back to when foot passengers still had to pay. In all that time, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been greeted with a simple “hello” or “god morgen” by staff. That’s… impressive, in the worst way. The crew directing vehicles in both Moss and Horten seem far more interested in hiding in their shelters to smoke or having a chat out of sight than doing their jobs. Drivers often end up confused, only to be met with aggressive waving as if it’s our fault we can’t read minds. Paying customers shouldn’t feel like an inconvenience. Special mention to the guy in the white baseball cap who looks like he thoroughly can't wait to retire and forget about sea life, and also to the one who seems convinced he’s launching fighter jets off the USS Gerald R. Ford - some common cheer wouldn't go amiss! Considering the prices you charge for vehicle transport, the lack of basic courtesy and professionalism is frankly embarrassing. Word spreads—your cold attitude isn’t just noticed, it’s discussed in the travel and tourism community. Time to raise the bar.

Most of the signs in the museum are only in Norwegian and not in English, but the main reason to come are the ships anyways. It's very cool to be able to explore the ships so freely - and there the signs are all in English as well. The biggest collection of maritime artifacts I’ve ever seen. From the beginning of the Norwegian navy to the present. Models and replicas of every ship along with artifacts from the ship. Interesting and educational. There is even a kids room for children to enjoy while parents meander at the museum.
