House of George Sand

Museum
Nature & Parks
Manor house with surrounding buildings & gardens, home to a revolutionary 19th-century author.
I went here in 2022, but never left a review on it. However, here it is now as I've remembered. 5 stars because of the beautiful scenery, history, and overall peaceful vibe of the place. There are just a few things to keep in mind if you are a foreigner. (Well, much like me.) FOR THOSE PLANNING TO GO: 1. They don't really speak English 2. Getting here is a bit difficult, as the language barrier kinda gets worse and worse, but it's definitely doable. 3. If you join a tour guide around the house, she (at least in our case) will not speak English. 4. You CAN get your own copy of George Sand's published works! (SIDENOTE: To get to Nohant in the first place, you will be dropped off in the middle of a field, with a small sign. Nohant does NOT have a big entrance to the town) OVERALL: Should you go? If you are a fan of Chopin and George Sand's lives together, yes. However, it is also best that you look up Sand's children, Solange And Maurice. Just knowing their backgrounds will be useful, and will make your expereince better. If you aren't a fan of Chopin and Sand, you might find it boring. (The blue room in the pictures below is Sand's room, where she died.)

Fantastic visit where we've been under the spell upon arriving in this well-preserved village, with its small Sainte-Anne church and its red-tiled roof and then, just a stone's throw away, the large gates of the property ... At the end of the courtyard behind the round flowerbed and its large tree, the house: we visit successively on the ground floor, the dining room where the table is always set and where Chopin, Liszt, Balzac, Flaubert, Mérimée, Delacroix, Alexandre Dumas fils sat... By the staircase and the corridors decorated by Maurice Sand, we go upstairs: the cabinet of curiosities, Chopin's room that George had transformed into storage after their break-up, the blue room with walls and hangings with Louis XVI medallions, where George Sand lived her last moments. Finally, Maurice's small theater where people enjoyed playing and singing on winter evenings. A true treasure trove for all fans of the author and of Frédéric Chopin, who composed a large part of his work here. Don't forget to pay your respects at the author's grave...

Stunning location stunning house. Downside is you get a tour of the house in French which is absolutely epic... hard if you don't speak Frenchand you be then be standing around for an hour and a half. I don't understand why they not let you just walk around or at least have an English guided tour. The marionette exhibition upstairs bookshop is free. Closed between 12 and 2 restaurant opposite little church has an amazing tart tartin but is very expensive. If you go on a Thursday the little cafe in the house grounds has a nice affordable menu.
Iris B — Google review
We enjoyed a pleasant walk around the grounds whilst waiting for the house to open. There was not much information on how the tour would be conducted and we were not made aware that the entire tour would be accompanied by a French native who did not speak English. You were not able to walk around the house unattended and the narrative given by the guide in each room, was extensive, which would have been really interesting if our understanding of French was more extensive. We did escape along with quite a few other non French speaking visitors, when the tour went upstairs, so sadly we didn’t get to see the top floor of the property. We felt that if there was an option for either an electronic audio guide or an app that linked to an audio guide for that particular property, it would have enabled us to enjoy the details of all aspects of the property and it’s various historical inhabitants.

I was fortunate to be taken here by my local guide and enlightened regarding the life and legacy of George Sand. I visited this beautiful site and grounds in 2024 and thoroughly recommend it. The tours are in French, and as my abilities in French are elementary at best, there is an English brochure they will lend you to carry along on the tour that gives the background of each room on the tour. Truly a fascinating monument worth a visit if you find yourself in Central France. Merci!
Batwood — Google review
Nice in depth tour but only in french. Very nice tiny village with an old church so there are more things to see than just the house. Very good souvenir shop with lots of books on Sand, Chopin ,Liszt.

Great guided visit, with in depth information on George de sand

Beautiful tour, but there should be some assistance in terms of written guide in English or other languages so that someone who doesn't understand french can follow and enjoy the tour as much as anyone else.

Highly recommend visiting this site. We stopped by on a road trip, and were absolutely amazed by the beauty of this site and the incredible work that has gone into preserving and documenting it. The artificial soundscape produced by speakers throughout the site really added to the experience.

This is a beautiful medieval Cistercian Abbey, who's life as a religious centre was ended by the French revolution. It has been lovingly restored and is still peaceful and atmospheric. It has an excellent café managed by a delightful lady and the reception staff were friendly a welcoming. We cycled to the Abbaye and found dedicated cycle parking - cyclists welcome! Well worth a visit and recommended.

We went for “flâneries lumineuses”. Great experience to visit this beautiful abbey in night time. The lights made the place amazing. You have possibility to have picnic outside in the garden. The place is well maintained. My son also enjoyed the visit. Ticket for adult is 5 euros and free for kids. If you are in the region you should visit this abbey. The restaurant near the abbey looks great. We will try it next time.

Julia B — Google review
Pretty chateau. Visit by guided tour only. Not for those who don't understand French fluently as there is an awful lot of time spent standing in one place listening to the guide's rapid commentary. French adults found him amusing so I suspect he is good - just not accessible to those with limited French or with small children

Excellent. Stayed just the one night and wish it was longer. Alex got our bags into the golf buggy and took us to our sensational and large room with modern ensuite. Great dinner in the restaurant and picnic breakfast delivered to our door. Wonderful grounds to walk around. Very relaxing and highly recommend.

Gorgeous castle and excellent service! At the restaurant, Tamara was very kind and welcoming. We didn’t have a reservation, but she still made room for us and even upgraded our experience by seating us on the rooftop with a beautiful view of the castle. The staff in the store were also friendly and informative. A very nice detour on our road trip!

We stay in this castle’s room for one night. Alex and his wife were really nice and helpful. We enjoy the garden, the silent castle during night, and the beautiful castle. We are so excited to stay here and we love this experience.
Mia M — Google review
Very nice gardens to walk through. We did not take the guided tour in the castle. Lunch (charcuterie) was okay, yet quite expensive.
E S — Google review
Really a nice castle, the guide did the tour with lots of passion. Tip: please improve/expand the English version of the tour. An audio goude would also be great. Extra points: for the charge station. Free charging ❤️ The lovely restaurant: food and service are very good!

We stayed at Chateau D’Ainay-le-Vieil while traveling through France and loved it! It was the most amazing place to stay and with only 5 rooms you are guaranteed peace and quiet. The rooms were elegant and clean with lovely bathrooms. The chateau was lovely and we enjoyed relaxing in the drawing room but the gardens were the highlight. They were beautiful and the fact we had them to ourselves made it even nicer.
Lars E — Google review
Worth seeing, with a nice park, the castle from 14th century encircled by a moat is the most south-located castle in the Valley of Loire. Entry shop with souvenirs and tickets to buy. Nice surroundings. A super guide named Etienne will walk you around through the rooms of the castle. Only for French speaking visitors.

Art museum
The Museum of Popular Music, also known as MuPop, is a unique cultural treasure that celebrates the musical heritage of France and the world. The museum boasts an impressive collection of instruments, costumes, and artifacts spanning from ancient Hurdy Gurdys to modern-day music and instruments. Visitors can enjoy a well-designed setting with sumptuous and excellently preserved instruments on display.
We Love MuPop. Displays are great as is the Audio guide. Excellent for a couple of hours. Challenge - try to find the old chap in the first display singing a sad song about his dead greyhound. Very emotional. Love MuPop
Michael P — Google review
Great welcome from the friendly staff, really interesting museum over 3 floors. Lots to read with excellent translation into English. Also you'll have headphones to listen to hundreds of pieces of music, from pop to hurdy gurdy, bagpipes guitar etc..The museum is well set out with toilets, cloakroom and drink machine on the ground floor. There are hundreds of old photos, beautiful instruments and interactive things to do. You'll need at least two and a half hours, but often there is a temporary exhibition too, in which case I would allow three to four hours. There is wheelchair access and a lift too. Definitely worth a visit.
Claudia M — Google review
We didn't plan a visit but just entered during our sightseeing. We left amazed after 2,5 hours or so. Soooo much to see and to hear.

Brilliant museum. I spent the whole afternoon here as there is so much to see (and music to hear) and even then they had to kick me out at closing time! I should have arranged to spend the whole day there. Will need to arrange a return visit...
Niq J — Google review
A beautiful collection of our music history in different forms
Marc N — Google review
A marvelous museum filled with historical instruments showcasing music from every era. The interactive displays (headsets allowing you to hear various pieces of music or particular instruments) added so much enjoyment. The temporary exhibit was entertaining as well (currently movie music combined with Lego sets). Looking forward to returning again and again.
Christopher P — Google review
Pretty good museum but the english text don't correspond to the French text... The toilet aren't really big and the light in there were going crazy. there wasn't enough private space to kiss. We still found a spot behind the black vibrating cage to kiss where nobody could see us. Anyway, we had fun and the museum was funny, interesting but really quick if you don't read the text.

A) The people working here miss in human values and ethics. B) Rules are rules and they must be folllowed, wheather they make any sense or not. I was coming by bike from germany and i didnt bring a short suited for "only" swimming. I didnt want to buy one for 21€. I rejected, I dont need one in my daily life going into Sauna or Swimming. Maybe i should have bought one, just to proof all the Things you can do in a short suited for "only" swimming.

(Translated by Google) We were entitled to 1.5 hours of access to the Les Nériades Spa thanks to our hotel's offer. We had a wonderful time in the various pools, including a whirlpool, various jets, a current simulator, and more. There are plenty of ways to relax. The real highlight is the small outdoor area, which is very pleasant when the weather is nice. The contrast between the warm water and the cooler air outside is truly amazing. One small drawback: we would have preferred slightly warmer water. It was fine, but it still lacked a bit of warmth. The reception was impeccable. The staff was friendly and attentive. We had forgotten our towels, and she kindly lent us some. The changing rooms are clean, even if there are few of them. For us, this is a must-do activity in Néris-les-Bains!

(Translated by Google) Contrary to all the comments, we were very well received. The site is very pretty, the massages were a real pleasure. Our staff were professional and attentive. The person who was supervising the pools was adorable. We had a great time. It is up to the people who come to show civility and respect the safety provisions, not to be selfish and not to always stay in the same place. We saw a lack of respect, including a person who had decided to make their face mask, people who did not use the footbridge, etc. If everyone were more respectful, the lifeguard would not have to intervene. The problem is not the employees but the people who think that from the moment they have paid they can do what they want. A big thank you to the Neriades team for our day (receptionists, pool supervisor and our masseuses) (Original) Contrairement à tous les commentaires, nous avons été très bien accueillis.

(Translated by Google) The facilities are pleasant, the jets are powerful and massage very well. But for a place that allows relaxation, you shouldn't expect a big smile or even a warm welcome, it spoils the pleasure quite a bit. The lifeguard was very friendly and attentive. The Centre National du Costume de Scene (CNCS) is a grand museum that showcases the history of theater through its extensive collection of over 20,000 costumes, accessories, and stage sets. Housed in the building of an old cavalry regiment, this museum offers high-quality temporary exhibitions that are renewed every four to five months due to the fragility of the costumes.
Excellent museum, we visit every year. The puppet exhibition is very interesting. Great restaurant.

It is dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of theatrical costumes and stage sets from various performances. The center features an extensive collection that includes costumes from opera, ballet, theater, and more, showcasing the evolution of theatrical design over time. Visitors can explore the museum's exhibits, which often highlight the artistry and craftsmanship involved in costume creation, along with the history of the performances they were part of. Have visited this museum many times over the last few years, and some exhibitions I've liked much better than others. The Christian Lacroix is up there as one of the best, the costumes are stunning! I'd highly recommend it!

A fantastic museum which revives our history through opera and theater costumes...a trip through the ages, the arts and fashion! You will surely like the permanent exhibition on a great dancer, choregraph and producer : Noureiev ! Please do not forget to enjoy the premices : a former military garnison, saved from destruction thanks to its patrimonial protection. Stairs are splendid !

Beautiful building currently showing Noureev & Carnival de Rio costumes. I unfortunately didn't realise the Rio show meant the fairytale theatre costumes weren't on show & I rushed passed as many kids in the way to find that was all there was!

Let’s just start by saying that my boyfriend and I have worked in show-business for years. Him as a stage manager and I, a costumer… we had high hopes! We were not disappointed!! We were there for the Cabaret exhibit and it was beautiful! I absolutely loved every minute of our visit and it was well worth it. Whether for the industry or not, there’s information for everyone. Perfectly presented, the stage exhibit is also very well organized and detailed. They rotate the exhibits as their collection is very large. So it’s worth going back for more! I know I will be. We took a good 2 or 3 hours to visit, but I was just fascinated by all there was to see!

Totally brillant place. Excellent and knowledgeable guide who made the visit a total pleasure for the visitor who is keen on history. Full of awesome details that tell the visitor, as Mantin wished, how a (erudite) bourgeois of the late 1800s lived. Must see.

We took a quick stroll through the exhibition, and the guided tour. The tour itself is only in French. Our guide really nailed it. He was so sympathetic and enthusiastic and it was fun and interesting to watch him. On top of that his English was very good and he translated the main facts for us, which made the tour through this amazing house even better.

(Translated by Google) While strolling through Charroux with our children, we wanted to visit the soap factory. We saw a gate, and about ten people inside. We pushed open the gate and went in, but were very rudely ushered out by the owners. This was in front of all the customers present... We were told the door was closed and that we didn't have to open it. But it was just a simple gate, with no lock, sign, or opening hours. We deduced that it must be lunchtime. It's normal that opening hours must be respected (managers are entitled to a break), but the manner in which people are addressed is just as important. A minimum of courtesy and discretion would have been enough for us. If the establishment wants to avoid this kind of situation, an "open/closed" sign would be a way to more clearly inform future customers. We would have liked to have been welcomed as individuals and not considered just passing tourists. We didn't return to the shop after our meal. No way I'm spending a cent in this place.

Not having seen the sign prohibiting dogs, I was thrown out of the establishment in a very cavalier manner by the person I think was the manager. I don't question the fact of banning animals from the premises, I can totally understand that. However, there is the art and way of asking things. A respectful and polite manner would have been more elegant on the part of a business manager. This person in no way makes you want to come back and buy local products and is doing great harm to the profession. Lots of progress to be made in terms of welcoming the public. Sir, I understand that some people are rude and disrespectful, but that was not my case, there is no point in making the whole world pay for the stupidity of others. I recommend that you do some training in welcoming the public, knowing how to live and being kind.

You're entering the artist's studio, because if Emmanuel is the artist, Joanna will be the mold. Guaranteeing a much-needed sale to keep the place alive, she will be the pulse of a whole that the artist will constantly keep beating with gestures repeated a thousand times over, during a learned lesson in soap making. The artist is not a merchant; he speaks from the heart, not with money or manners, so beware, visitors. Be careful climbing these steps, because in this tower, young soaps are born every day, perfuming these old stones and transforming your banter into an initiatory journey. The shaman will be kind if you enter as a friend. In short, I loved it. (Translated by Google) Hello friends, if you have an hour to spare and you are in Besse and it is hot.....here is a good plan. It’s less than 3 km away. The waterfall is indicated on the side of the road. A few places to park also on the side of the road. The path is relatively correct for going there with small children, around 10 minutes of walking 🚶‍♀️. Namely, what you go down you have to go up afterwards 😰😂… Arriving at the bottom, it’s a pretty waterfall surrounded by greenery. There would be a nice walk along the stream if you want, which I haven't done yet. I try to always have with me a swimsuit and water shoes + towel from a large, well-known sports store chain. To be able to cool off…And it’s quite quick given the temperature of the water 😂😂😂. The noise, the view, once in front you are amazed, the setting is splendid and if you are a photo lover you will be able to enjoy yourself. There is the possibility of approaching by climbing a few stones. We went there as a family and both adults and children were won over. A walk to do and repeat. From the time we sat down, they made it quite clear to us that we were not welcome. After 3 rude looks and comments of annoyance from staff who seemed irritated that they had an extra table to serve, and no sign of any menus or drinks offers, we up and left. Source de l'Hôpital

Source de l'Hôpital is located in Parc des Celestins, housed in a beautiful white building that offers a peaceful place to sit and enjoy the shade and restorative waters. The water from this source is less mineralized compared to others, making it more refreshing. The Rotonde, built in 1946 by architect Louis Aublet, surrounds the spring with a temperature of 34 degrees.
Top!
Marie-astrid S — Google review
Unfortunately closed during my visit and relocated to the Pavillon des Sources for renovations, inquire at the Tourist Office to find out more ... Its impetuous gushing having earned it first being called "Gros Boulet", it took its name of Source de l'Hôpital in 1753, following the establishment of the old Vichy hospital nearby. Work carried out on its natural emergence site revealed an ancient catchment. The spring which emerges at a temperature of 34°C. has undergone many transformations. Its successive developments have been superimposed from the ancient well. When it is caught in concretions (at the end of the Middle Ages or at the beginning of the modern period), a new catchment is made of Gannat stones topped with a base forming a square basin covered with an iron grid. After being reinforced, it was enlarged in 1818 and topped with a circular Volvic stone pool surrounded by a promenade. A pavilion supported by twelve columns was erected above the spring in 1842. It primarily supplied the bathing establishment of the neighboring hospital, which was closed down in 1887 and then demolished. With spa visitors flocking during the second half of the 19th century, a new layout was necessary. The initial catchment was reworked in 1870, a pipe carrying water directly to the spa was installed, and the pool was replaced by a cast iron basin from which the water providers drew water. Since the 1942 work, water has been collected directly from the old ancient well and directed through a network of pipes to the basin, which took on its current appearance thirty years later. Long available in pharmacies, rich in carbon dioxide which gives it its characteristic sulfurous odor, recommended in cases of digestive, gastric and intestinal disorders to treat diseases of the liver, colon and pancreas. Declared of public interest by imperial decree on January 23, 1861, the spring is used as a drink distributed by the self-service refreshment stands in the Hall des Sources, as well as in the Callou thermal establishment. In view of the significant resources implemented around its initial capture, it can be assumed that the source of the Hospital has had therapeutic use since Antiquity, whether as a drink or in a bath. Converging evidence seems to confirm this hypothesis of thermalism present in Vichy for several millennia. In the distant past when Vichy was already known for its warm waters under the name of Aquae Calidae … It is the property of the City since 2021, the source of the Hospital is an integral part of the Vichy Thermal Estate.

We went there two years ago after we discovered by chance, that you could make your own knives there. It was a very pleasant experience as they made a special session just for us five. We still love to use the knives and my middle son was devastated when he lost his during a hike. So if you have the time do it, it is well worth the very cheap admission and it will be a memento for years to come.

The Musée de la Coutellerie, also known as the Cutlery Museum, is a must-visit in Thiers. It showcases a collection of 700 knives and blades crafted in the city over five centuries. Visitors can explore workshops and demonstrations highlighting how Thiers produces over 70% of France's cutlery. The museum offers an informative experience, including a short film, exhibits of locally made knives, and a captivating sound and light show on blade forging.
Great experience and very informative for both kids and adults. We learnt a lot about traditional knife-making and evolution over the centuries. The museum is split in two parts and you can enjoy demonstrations of different techniques. Some of the pieces are unique. The tour was guided and we had lots of fun. The guide tried to connect and make the experience interesting.

This is only for the French speakers. This is made up of 2 buildings. One speaks about history of the region, city and its evolution. 2nd building talks about how the knives were made in earlier days ascompared to today. Includes a light & sound show.

Two part visit starting with a short film and then various rooms exhibiting knives made in Thiers. This is followed by part II which is held in a different location (about 40 metres away) where there is a sound and light show of forging blades and concludes with a demonstration and explanation of the shaping, sharpening and polishing of blades. All in all, a thoroughly entertaining and informative visit.

Interesting museum in two parts. The first building (No.23) on the aptly named Rue de la Coutellerie, focuses on 800 years of knife-making in Thiers. The second building (No. 58) has workshop demonstrations of cutlery-making skills and more galleries displaying the range of utensils, from professional knives (surgical utensils, gardeners’ knives, marine knives, vintners’ knives, electricians’ knives) to scissors & gadget knives (with lighters, rulers, thermometers & pens incorporated), all made in Thiers over the years. I've written about Thiers in Mechtraveller.

(Translated by Google) A very nice and interesting morning, with our children thrilled to leave with their "treasure." So, yes, to echo some of the less complimentary comments, don't expect to go digging into the mine to extract amethyst. We dig through the ground for stones that have been extracted from the mine, but the children are happy to dig and look for THE stone they love. For visitors who are among adults, it can be a little more frustrating. It's true that these veins make you want to go there and extract a rare piece! But for the €12 entrance fee, you leave with unique and magnificent little stones. Personally, we loved it, and Jonathan answers all our questions without any problem. He's very friendly with the children; there are a few rules to follow, but they make sense. Perhaps a little adjustment to the site should be made for people with mobility difficulties (with a cane, for example), as the site isn't easy for them... Reservations are essential. We will come back when you have updated the last "tunnel" vein 😉 (Original) Très belle matinée très intéressante avec nos enfants aux anges de repartir avec leur "trésor".

I got to know about this unique paper mill when I was a child. The last of its kind by the way. Awesome experience, bringing you back in time and making you proud to support this heritage. Now living in Luxembourg, I recently ordered paper from them online. The French post lost the first parcel they sent, so they immediately sent another, which I received 3 days later. Insanely good aftersale service :) The paper is just like I remembered it. Amazing. This will make fine letters for my friends. To all epistolary addicts, that s the place you want to source your paper from. Fine quality + history make up for an awesome writing experience. Thank you for everything! Will order again sometime soon for sure ;)

The tour of 90 minutes was a bit too long and dull for our taste. The castle and interior are beautiful though, and our kids enjoyed seeing all the different rooms. Still, a faster pace would have been better, for us.

A great visit if you're in the area. A beautiful lived in home. One of the few lived in chateaus which is well taken care of. Like similar castles in the UK, this is a home. There are pictures of family amongst the rooms.

Château de la Roche is a charming medieval castle located along the Loire River. The picturesque setting makes it a pleasant surprise for travelers passing through the area. Visitors can enjoy guided tours led by actors, adding a creative and playful element to the castle's history. Additionally, there are activities such as escape games available inside. The castle itself is the main attraction, offering plenty of photo opportunities and a scenic walk around the small island it sits on.
Very nice castle on an island of river Loire. Very scenic situation. Excellent guided tour by Eveline for families with children, I could join as a single guest. Kind of theatre show with some of the former owners of the castle and even some ghosts :-). Very helpful a notice brochure with German translation. Nice restaurant nearby across the road. Excellent! Merci beaucoup!

No words that I know can do justice to this majestic place!!! A chateau in the middle of the river. Overlooking this, there is a café that will allow you to admire the incredible scenery sipping your coffee, beer or enjoying a light snack! Without a doubt, you can spend a whole day around this magical castle!!

What a lovely chateau! Sitting there on a rock in the middle of Loire river. The animated tour is very well set up and the lady guiding the groupe is just lovely and willing to answer all questions and showing full pride in the place. Just be carefull to reserve ahead as only guided tours are possible, no individual visits. And if you have a chance to pas by in the evening it is amazingly lit up an put to value. I strongly recommend.

Definitely réserve and buy tickets online. We didn't and we couldn't go in. It's a very small castle and they cannot accommodate many people. That is why reservation is required.

Surprise in the middle of nowhere or on the way somewhere else. On our way to Bordeaux and after the disappointing Lyon, we came across this place and it was a pleasant surprise. It looks a bit like a movie set in beautiful surroundings. One doesn't need more than 20-30 mins to visit it and, if you do not get inside the building, you don't even need to pay entrance. You can also walk around the small island. Apparentlyz there are some activities one can do inside such as escape room. PS: There is nothing else around unless you like kayaking.

Celebrated artificial lake offering swimming, campgrounds, mountain biking & scenic hiking trails.
Great place to spend a relaxed day in nature. You may play a ball game, walk around the lake or do other outdoor activities. Possibility to hide from the rain or bad weather under a roofed area with benches and tables. A great place for a picnic.

Rude unhelpful staff and arrogant life guards who spent their time messing about rather than doing their job. We were wearing swimming trunks but told these were prohibited as unhygienic, despite this being lake water complete with ducks and even a water rat!!! Ridiculous non-sensical rules and rigorously enforced and the only thing that the lifeguards actually engaged in. Avoid!
Richard S — Google review
The area here is not quite famous for a refreshing dip on hot summer days, but you take what you get. As long as you don’t want to end up like a sardine in the surveilled area next to the parking space, you should not have a problem with wading through the mud when entering the lake. The water is not really cold, but let’s pretend you can refresh a little on warmer days. It is very nice for a walk in the woods on the other, less frequented side. SUP and pedal boat rental is not on the side of the parking space, you either have to swim or walk to the other side, also passing the aerial adventure park - which could also be a nice attraction for kids. You can also find a restaurant and an ice cream parlour. Besides the parking fee the access to the lake is free of charge, though you may find a separate lido having an entrance fee.

I called and asked if we can come with a boy 4 years old and someone on the phone told me 'yes' and explained the prices and opening hours, pool temperature, everything. We drove 200 km to reach there and the ladies on the reception didn't allow us to enter because of our 4 years son - there is a special schedule for the little ones and can't enter any time. And we were not on the right time of course because the lady on the phone didn't explain that. So we came for nothing and they didn't want to make any exception for ONE child. Very disappointed. Also this schedule you can't see on their website.

Nice enough thermal springs with a large pool inside and outside. Not very big. If you like lower temperatures it is 30-32C. For me this was very cold and very unpleasant while I was in the water. However after I got out of the water and dried off it felt pretty relaxing. 11€ for one hour 15.50€ for one session. One hour is plenty unless you wanna freeze...

Rock of Solutré is a towering limestone rock that offers sweeping views of the surrounding area. The hike to the top takes about 30 minutes and is popular among visitors. The trail provides fantastic views of Fuisse and the Solutre Rock, as well as vineyards along the way. It's a relatively easy walk from the parking area, making it suitable for families with children. Additionally, there is a museum nearby to complement the experience.

Great and easy hiking trail to climb to the top; the scenery along the trail overlooks vineyards and little hamlets and is awesome for picture taking. The view from the top of the rock is breathtaking!

Beautiful view from the top! Nice walk. It took us with 2 kids (8/9 years) about 90 minutes in total, including chilling for 30 minutes at the top.
Jonathan C — Google review
Popular hike it seems, quite a lot of people did the walk to the top which has a very nice view over the area. It took us +-30mins, for 1.7km. You can start at one of the (free) parkings, there should be enough place. We did the descent via Combe Robat til the town of Vergisson. Finally through the vineyards back to the parking. You can follow the yellow marks. This direction is very quiet and more fun. Our daughters of 8 and 11 joined us, and in total we walked 6km.

Hameau Duboeuf, located in Saone et Loire, Bourgogne Franche Comte, offers a traditional regional dining experience at the cafe des deux horloges within the vine and wine park. The museum may have been closed for some visitors, but they still enjoyed exploring the shop's Beaujolais selection and tasting six wines at the bar/restaurant. The old Victorian station housing the restaurant adds a unique charm with its original glass painted ceiling and vintage travel posters.
Lovely place and especially warm care by the lady manager throughout our visit. Interesting, informative, exciting, fun and, of course, a tasty day. Recommend for all with keen interest on the culture of vines and wines. Ate the formule 2 at the cafeteria accompanied by roomfull of locals.

We arrived knowing the museum was closed but wanted to have a shop for a few bottles from the Beaujolais selection. The shop was extremely quiet but we found a very accommodating staff member who allowed us to taste 6 wines at the bar/restaurant and then choose our favourites to buy. This staff member (sorry we didn’t catch your name) gave us 5 star level service. He truly made our day. Thanks Mr. Gentleman Kindly (not his real name).

Really fun afternoon! They have put a lot of effort into creating a fun way to learn about wine with an amazing collection of artifacts and great attractions. Really made me appreciate the history of wine in the region and enough going on to keep the kids going until the all important wine tasting! (Which would not happen at a normal vineyard where they would last about 5 mins!)
Michael J — Google review
Not as big as expected but it was great for adults and kids. I loved the bee ride and the outside area for the kids.
Mel B — Google review
An interesting museum dealing with just about every aspect of wine, from bottling to transportation to tasting and everything in-between. It has a few interactive areas to appeal to children, although I'm not sure how many would really appreciate this museum. There is also an included wine tasting with 2 wines. So why did I only give 3 stars? As an English speaker with weak French skills, there were a number of plaques without any English translation. But most importantly, I found the museum rather pricey: €20. There are 4 areas to view: The hamlet, the train station, the gardens and the wine cellar. When I came on October 10, the garden and wine cellar had just closed for the year, but I still had to pay full price. I'm sorry, but paying full price for half of the displays doesn't sit well with me.
Michael M — Google review
Intreating museum about the wine district and process of making wine. Sometimes it's a bit to much of a Comercial for wine ! (No mentioning of the bad sides of wine directly)

More for children, not really for the animals We saw a zookeeper use a fire extinguisher on monkeys from the side to keep them appart We had to pay for the waterpark too, eventhough we did not want to use it. It was all in the price and no other options were available, it was misleading. But he parking is free.

I visited Touroparc Zoo a couple of weeks ago to celebrate my birthday, and I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had! What made this experience so special was how hands-on it was. Unlike other soigneur experiences where you barely get to interact with the animals, Christophe made sure we were involved and engaged the whole way through. You can tell he genuinely cares for the all the reptiles and takes great pride in sharing that with others. We had the chance to see so many incredible species up close, and he gave us a fascinating look into what it’s really like to work behind the scenes at a zoo. Thank you, Christophe, for making my birthday so memorable. Your enthusiasm made the visit come alive! Highly recommend this experience to anyone, whether you're an animal lover or just curious. Truly a 10/10!
Ahaeli C — Google review
Very! nice park but absolutely ridiculous how weird they are about the height in the attractions, when accompanied by an adult. I was not allowed to drive the horses attraction with my baby who really got to love this attraction in Parc le pal. We stood 15 minutes in the burning sun. When it was our turn he pointed at the sign saying my baby should be 90cm. At Parc le pal we did this attraction multiple times without an issue. This ruined the moment. All other safe attractions you can do as parent with your kid, is not allowed, really frustrating. The wild water attraction or the mono rail are allowed :/ Please check your height restrictions... Everything else is really nice, but above gave everything a bad taste.
Dylan M — Google review
We visited on a cooler weekday in September and the place was very quiet which was perfect for us to see all the animals It's clear the animals are well cared for and healthy The rides and water park looked good but they were not available this late in the season

The VIP and Soigneur experiences are totally worth it. We have done the VIP visit twice and the both times was super amazing. Highly recommended. We chose to do the Soigneur experience in the reptile house and we're extremely happy with our choice. It was very very interactive and we learned so many interesting facts from Christoph. Couriot - Musée de la Mine

Mentioned on
3 lists
Museum
Sights & Landmarks
Couriot - Musée de la Mine is a captivating living museum that immerses visitors in the rich history of coal mining in the Saint-Etienne region. Nestled within an expansive 8-acre park, it offers picnic areas and scenic views. While the restored mining gallery is currently closed, guests can explore various exhibition rooms showcasing the life of miners and temporary exhibits at their own pace.
This is a must-visit place whether you're a tourist or a resident of Saint Etienne. The Couriot Mine is an essential part of Saint Etienne's history, and hence, this place has to be on your bucket list. If you're a student or under 25 years of age, you get free entry to the museum, but you're not allowed to go into the mining shaft. If you visit on weekday mornings, it usually isn't very crowded. I recommend visiting in the morning so that you get to see all the exhibits in a quiet and peaceful environment. Advanced booking is not necessary unless you're taking a guided tour. The guided tour is only available in French, so unless you're fluent in French, it's not worth it. At the ticket office, you can buy souvenirs like fridge magnets, postcards etc. The coffee machine at the ticket office didn't work the last time I visited.. that was a little disappointing. The vending machine doesn't accept cards as a form of payment, which is disappointing as well. Overall, I loved visiting the museum and learning about the history of mining in Saint Etienne and the Loire region. There are several exhibits and animations that explain every aspect of the mining industry and its history, particularly the Couriot mine.
Sinjini — Google review
Awesome museum ! I highly recommend doing a guided visit. You will go underground and see how a charcoal mine is. The guide was very nice and very informative.
Felipe L — Google review
Well worth a visit, and walkable from city center. The guided tour was superb, so consider booking in advance!
Kathryn G — Google review
This museum is a former coal mine. Super interesting to visit if you pass by and you are interested in this kind of stuff. If you book in advance a guided tour (organised by the museum), you will also have the opportunity to visit a replica of the mine galleries, which includes a short underground train ride (underground facilities are not open to visitors with a regular entry ticket, guided tour only). Suitable for children. Everything is in French, though.
AJ M — Google review

The Musée d'Art et d'Industrie, housed in a grand 1861 mansion, offers a captivating journey through the local design history. The museum showcases an array of artifacts including weapons, textiles, and bicycles that trace the city's industrial past. Visitors can explore the three-story layout and delve into the underground basement to discover antique bicycle prototypes, providing insights into the technical evolution of bicycles and the history of bicycle manufacturing in Saint-Etienne during the 1800s.
The best place to learn about the history and cultural heritage of Saint Etienne. There are exhibits on sports, arms manufacture and textile manufacture: the three things that constitute the most important part of Saint Etienne's culture. The building is beautiful and it feels calm and peaceful to sit outside in the garden.
Sinjini — Google review
What a wonderful museum! History of bicycle and weaving technologies engaged one in the rich industrial heritage of the region. Great bookshop. Excellent proximity to other spots which should be on your list to visit like the big indoor market & restaurants and cafes under glass. And I got to see displays and explanations of the origin of the Jacquard Loom punch cards which were the basis of the Hollerith cards used in the early days of programming computers! I learned programming on punch cards in the late 1970’s and there they were from hundreds of years ago. Wonderful, wonderful, eye opening experience.
Kevin D — Google review
Very beautiful museum, you must visit it when coming to Saint-Étienne! It contains the whole industrial revolution history of the city as well as exhibits of different ribbons, weapons and bicycles. You can also find the old sewing machines, work benches and many other cool things!
Syrine S — Google review
I'd highly recommend to visit with a guide to see how the Jacquard machine function in 1808. It has stunning collections and well introduces the development of Saint Etienne.
Salut G — Google review
Lots of items, but the curator should be fired. Absolutely no structured narrative or anything that would capture young imaginations. Many information screens didn't work, and despite displaying an English language symbol, that didn't work either. You'd think that with Saint Etienne hosting four Rugby World Cup games and nearby Lyon another five over a month that the cities would have prepared their cultural centres for visits... The "Cafe" is two vending machines, one for Coffee the other for Snacks...
Ronan B — Google review
Very interesting museum in Saint Etienne, helping us understand more about the history of this city.

(Translated by Google) Ugh, a money making machine.... I came there with my partner. (54 years and a little more for her for information, for a meal show, our Christmas present) Friendly welcome and immediately afterwards, obligation to take a photo with "2" artists, which you can buy for €9. Apero worthy of... I don't have a name, Lidl or Aldi is better! : Auvergne Taost (one passage to spread out, one to pick up what is placed on the Taost) Punch... without alcohol or very little, and without taste... except sugar. The basic STARTER, the dish - chicken fillet - just not good: chicken pierced in Saumur, dirty and waterlogged... so very, even too tender to be of good quality. Just spiced up with a porcini mushroom sauce. The accompaniment was supposed to be polenta...semolina. Before the cheese - disgusting and bland - and the frozen 🍨, another obligatory photo for €9. The coffee worthy of the neighborhood fair to finish... Well, we're old - not too old anyway - and we like good things, maybe the show will be better. I forgot something, express meal... followed by the show, not at the same time!!!! And yes, they offer the possibility of only coming for the show (to make more money) So the show: Animation by recorded tape to get in the mood throughout the evening, artists who are good, but who only reproduce what was asked of them. Édith Piaf, I like 2 to 3 minutes, but 15 minutes is a long time.... The girls,... pretty but mediocre show.... Mixture of children's show and nonsense fair. Anyway, after 25 minutes of show we left. I don't understand why you have such a rating. It seems that the food is not important and neither is the quality of the show. We have had other evenings of this type, for much less money and much better. 199€ for 2 + 37 euros for 2 glasses of champagne. Yes, if you want to change dessert, it’s €5!!! No photos because prohibited and very often recalled by the soundtrack (it's better to pay €9 for it 🤣🤣🤣) Conclusion: flee this place!!!

(Translated by Google) Magical moment! We were made very welcome and shown to our table. After the aperitif, we started the meal. At 2 p.m. the show started. It's magical. The dancers are truly professional. Their costumes are splendid. And the singer really took us into her story! We are delighted to have seen this very beautiful spectacle which really has nothing to envy of those in Paris. Congratulations to your entire team. (Original) Moment magique! Once the show was over, I only wanted to come back with friends and show them the cabaret you want. (Translated by Google) The staff from reception for reservations, to service, to the establishment manager, to the artists on stage and to the photographer, are really very professional, available and friendly. My partner dreamed of discovering a “traditional” cabaret show. She loved this quality magazine. We had a great time on January 1, 2024. I had booked for the photo with the artists at the end of the show. That's when I proposed. Thank you to the entire team for their support in this unique event.

(Translated by Google) Very nice evening spent at the Vous vous! The warm welcome and attentive servers. The meal was very good quality, although there was a downside to the drinks service (champagne served at the next table and a carafe forgotten, but all that was taken care of). Special mention for the Utopia show! Rather modern musical comedy, with songs, dances, and much more, in which the public is invited to participate.

Very friendly team. Nice drinks menu. Reasonable prices. Stunning spectacle. Magnificent dancers. Beautiful choreography. A singer with a voice to die for. Everyone there is friendly. The room is large and well appointed. I will go back as soon as possible to see the Caprice show. Glitter from the lights of music (Original) Visité deux fois cette année pour les spectacles Utopia en février et Idoles pour le jour de l'an.

Zoo
Outdoor Activities
Animal shelter
Wildlife park keeping primates, from chimps to gorillas, plus big cats, birds & reptiles.
A wonderful day spent at the ZOO. Lots of exotic animals, some of which you can even walk among - birds. As you can see, part of the park will be expanded and the area will increase. The animals have very nicely decorated habitats with enough space. Inside the garden there is a snack bar and a souvenir shop. Very well stocked. Definitely an unforgettable day with pleasant memories.

I have mixed feelings about zoos, I went because my company organized a visit. First time in my life I've been in the presence of a gorilla, no more than a few meters away. First time I've seen a gorilla eating fruits and.... yogurt? This gorilla was being hand fed by the owner of this zoo, Mr. Pierre, he was feeding her inside her room it was fascinating to see. First time I've seen a lion run firsthand, and very upclose. And last but not least, first time I've heard a group of 10+ chimpanzees quarreling, calling out and "screaming". This zoo gave me a sense of humbleness and some sort of primal fear I've never felt before. It made me realize how majestic and imposing these animals can be, yet how beautiful they are too. I liked the back story too. I hope they are truly living up to their mission. I'm still thinking about what I saw.

Very nice zoo! The zoo was larger than I expected and had a nice range of animals. I really enjoyed seeing the Sun Bears and all of the monkeys.

What a great zoo. Never seen so many active animals at a zoo before. The tigers and lions were magnificent and playing with each other rather than just sleeping or pacing. Good close up viewing with all the animals. Also it's obvious that the zoo is expanding their enclosure space so it'll be interesting to see what it looks like the next time we return. Well worth the entrance fee and we will definitely return when we are in this area.

Good zoo close by Lyon. The zoo offers some great species of animals, but I think the price is too high. You can spend a couple of hours here, but the park is small and completed within 2 hours. We missed a bunch of animals, despite taking the time to spend extra time in the park after finishing the route. We missed the coatis, servals, binturongs, dingos and some more. Very poor habitats for some animals and some animals did not seem to have any space, like the ocelots. We did really enjoy seeing the snow leopards and the arctic wolves. The park smells bad in a lot of places and the hygiene in the toilets is just bad. For such a price we expected clean toilets somewhere, but it was very poorly maintained. Parking is free. €18,50 is too much in this case, but it’s not a total waste. Hopefully it is being used for future wellbeing of the animals.

Beautiful clean zoo, animals are well looked after, very reasonably priced... Great day out

Conservation focused zoo with quite a lot of interesting primate exhibits (amongst a lot of other types of animals). Big enough that you can spend a few hours here but also not so big that it has to take up your entire day. The zoo is positioned up a hill so there is some elevation change during your walk through but the park is entirely accessible (wheelchairs of course, but that means also strollers too Mamas… even enough room through entrances and pathways for huge American double strollers). And the layout of the enclosures up the hill allows for really good viewing of the animals in their enclosures.
