Sights & Landmarks
Agnes Keith House is a restored post-WWII residence that once belonged to the renowned American author, Agnes Keith, and her husband Henry Harry Keith. The house has been transformed into a museum showcasing the couple's life in Sandakan through informative displays and a collection of genuine and replicated antiques. This historic house incorporates American, British, and local architectural elements, offering visitors a glimpse into the idyllic times spent by the Keiths.
A very beautiful Malay traditional house with a hint of western touch. I think they include other item not related to Agnes Keith here which is quite interesting. Those with student cards are free to enter. All the staff was very friendly and nice to us. There are lockers outside to store your things. It's very comfortable and cold inside the house.
Hasdilah D — Google review
One of the landmarks included in the Sandakan Heritage Trail, Agnes Keith’s House can be located on top of a small hill and is the next stop after finishing the 100 Steps trail. It’s an easy hike surrounded by trees and sounds of nature which can be a great walk granted that there is also a nice weather. The house itself if beautiful. It is well-maintained and does represent a point in time where the lifestyle and architecture were different compared to the modern design of houses today. There’s definitely an appeal to it and especially with its beautiful garden, I wouldn’t mind living in this one.

This residentisl house is a must to visit, it’s very clean, well preserved and supercool temp with airconditioning. Guests are requested to takeoff shoes when visiting . Its display is very well organized, not too informative. Minimal exhibition but a lot of knowledge is learned from the life of owners, pictures and their daily furniture. Outside garddn is very well maintained, it’s very worthy F or admission fee for 15 MYR (nonmalaysian)

Out of curiosity we went to the destination without expecting much , but to our surprise, we did enjoy the visit. Love the life story of Agnes, a writer since young . Though she only been in sabah for a few years, yet she love this land so much & written a book about it . Thanks for preserving the history & the building .

A NOSTALGIA THAT'S WORTH VISITING. ANYONE WHO IS A HISTORY BUFF SHOULD BE VISITING THIS HISTORIC PLACE THAT SHOWCASES THE JOURNEY OF THE FAMILY WHO I BELIEVE BROUGHT UP THE SANDAKAN AS IT IS. A STORY OF HOPE, DETERMINATION, SACRIFICE AND LOVE. DON'T FORGET TO SIT AND WATCH THE DOCUMENTARY VIDEO THAT THEY PLAY THERE. A MEMORABLE VISIT.
9TV P — Google review
Well preserved small museum. Good writings to learn about lives of an American embarking on an adventure to Borneo. Ticket is RM2 for locals, RM15 for foreigners.

At first, I just wanted to come and experience the experience of enjoying an English afternoon tea like many friends who always share photos of themselves enjoying their English afternoon tea at Agnes Keith House. We arrived at the restaurant and were greeted by a calm atmosphere, surrounded by a veranda on a hill full of beautiful greenery. We chose afternoon tea for a set of 4 people, hot tea with several types of cakes and muffins complete with butter and jam, while enjoying the evening breeze around Agnes Keith's House, the atmosphere is truly unique. You will definitely feel it if you are at this restaurant. While we were at the restaurant for about an hour, we were also treated to nostalgic songs, probably Agnes Keith's family's favorite songs. If you ask me the price, you will be surprised.. I really didn't expect the price to be very, very reasonable.. After afternoon tea, we visited the Agnes Keith House museum which is just a few meters from the restaurant. An old house in the style of a Malay house.. a house with floors and wooden walls, but all the furniture was modern for that era. Oh yes.. a ticket is charged to enter this museum.. Our visit here really gave us a special experience.. as a Sabahan I feel lucky to be left with historical material like this..

I like the exterior of this house. However I was a bit uncomfortable when I was inside the house probably it was very quiet on a weekday morning.

Gomantong Caves

Cave
Nature & Parks
Caverns & Caves
Gomantong Caves, located in Sabah, is a vast cave system within a limestone hill and a protected wildlife area. It is renowned for its large bat population and the presence of swiftlets whose nests are used to make bird's nest soup. The caves consist of two complexes - Simud Hitam (Black Cave) and Simud Putih (White Cave), with the latter housing the more valuable nests. The site is well-managed and features a boardwalk for easy exploration.
What an amazing place! You really feel like you are in the jungle here, and the ecosystem inside the cave is incredible to witness (if a little gross). We were lucky enough to see an orangutan with a newborn baby from the boardwalk.
Thomas K — Google review
If you are a cave lover then it is worth to visit, otherwise there are many other attractions to visit in this area. The world’s largest cockroach family really lives in this cave, they are also on the trail, you have to watch your step.
Sanja R — Google review
We didn’t go inside the cave but we went up the hill. We were very lucky to see a male orangután ~2 meters from us. If you are not lucky to see an orangutan, it is still worthy; you get a great view of the jungle at the platform.
Indira G — Google review
Cave can not be entered due to extremely strong smell. Had to hold my breath the entire time standing NEAR the cave not even IN the cave. But the view is nice, but a lot of steep stairs! Parts of the path are in bad condition, but still easily passable.
Sandro M — Google review
Worth the time to take a detour to the Gomantong Caves and surrounding area. The caves themselves are beautiful to look at and explore however take a face mask as the bat and bird excrement smell is a tad over bearing. Take time to explore the surrounding boardwalks as well and see the monitors, dragon flies and we were fortunate enough to find an Orangutan on the drive into the caves.
Adrian T — Google review
Don't miss this if you are leaving Sukau, this cave is on the way if you are heading back to Sandakan. The walk to the cave is like less than 10mins and the loop isn't big. This place is definitely not for anyone who's afraid of cockroaches or had serious hygiene requirements. Lotsa guonooooo. The bird nest pickers work in Apr after Raya in which we met a few nice abang who directed us around. Note that there are quite alot of dogs at the entrance and at the cave.
Pui L — Google review
It is not a dark cave, I didn't use my torch. The cave is high, but not very long, at least the part for the tourists. There are many amenities for the workers getting the swiftlets' nests and unfortunately also some trash and coacroches. You can climb up to see the view around, but it is 3 times the strairs from the picture. It would be very interesting to get more information about the workers and heir life. There are quite a few houses there and some people living there their normal lives. It is a nice cave but not as amazing as the ones in Mulu or Niah. Could be nicer after some easy cleaning of the trash. More explanation about the nest collectors and a little shop would be amazing. Entrance 30 myr for foreigners.
Klaudia A — Google review
Tbh, I didn't know the place, and it was just part of our tour package. But it was actually very interesting to hear the story how the harvest the nests of the swiftlets and to see the huge cave (although a bit smaller than Batu cave I'd say). Yes, it stinks from Ammoniac (but it is not as bad as you can read in some reviews) and there are cockroaches (no, you don't step on them, they are mainly on the wall) and not the path. So not a problem, even for kids.

Sandakan Memorial Park

Memorial park
Museums
Sandakan Memorial Park is a significant historical site that offers visitors a glimpse into the harrowing past of Borneo during World War II. It was once a Japanese POW camp where Australian and British prisoners endured unimaginable hardships, with only six Australian escapees surviving by 1945. Today, the park stands as a serene forest orchard and gardens, providing an ideal setting for contemplative walks.
Visit on: 17 Aug 2025 Arrived around 12pm and not much people walking here. Walking relax along the park (which nearby to housing area though) and it is quite suitable for jogging. Free entrance to the sandakan commerative pavilion and with air-conditioned.
Jess P — Google review
A peaceful park that serves as a memorial about the horrors and thousands (2500?) of deaths of the Allied POWs during the Japanese occupation. Not a lot to see from a historical angle, but valuable as a memorial.
Vincent O — Google review
If you really really really really have lots of time, then you can consider visiting this place. There is nothing special about it. Lots of irritating mosquitoes. One can spend at most 25 mins here. There is parking available. Plenty of signs to show the exact places for POWs. There is a pond to take nice pictures. Can bring along fish food to feed the hungry fishes.
Lee K — Google review
I tried to find this place but missed a few times as the location on Waze wasn’t clear. I didn’t explore this place except taking some pictures of the beautiful water lilies in the ponds. For those who loves to see flowers like me can check out this place, you will immediately see the pond once you enter from the entrance.
Carol Y — Google review
I am immensely grateful that Sandakan Memorial Park exists, offering not just a site of historical significance; it is built in remembrance of those especially the Australians and British who perished in the war defending North Borneo. There are remnants of rusty machineries such as the excavator and boiler/alternator left there which were used in the construction of concentration camp and other infrastructure. The memorial park earns a respectable five stars rating for its impeccably maintained grounds and the profound experience it offers. It was unfortunate that I couldn’t explore further due to the heavy downpour and swamp of mosquitoes attacks on the day of visit nonetheless I was grateful that I came.
Sam L — Google review
A must-see for war and history enthusiasts, Australians and British, or if you want a rainforest walk that's not too taxing. The former should make a stop at the house at the top of the stairs - it is a beautiful, dedicated memorial telling the story of the POW camp, death marches and thereafter, with a rolling wall of remembrance.
Jessica N — Google review
It was good, well kept and even though the walking distance is just a short walk (for me) it is still a must go places
Asybella A — Google review
A peaceful but meaningful memorial park making sure that the atrocities of the past are not forgotten. The park is just one tiny corner of the camp footprint but unfortunately the rest got built on before they realised what they had. Worth a visit - it's no Auschwitz but is no less impactful.

Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC)

Wildlife refuge
Nature & Parks
Nestled in the heart of Sepilok, Nature Lodge offers a prime location just a short distance from attractions like the Rainforest Discovery Centre and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC). The BSBCC is dedicated to protecting the world's smallest sun bear species, which is threatened by deforestation and illegal hunting. Visitors can observe these bears in a large forest enclosure with elevated walkways and observation platforms.
I had a wonderful visit to the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre. The sanctuary is set in a large natural habitat, giving the bears plenty of space to roam and live in surroundings close to the wild. The walkways are well maintained, though be prepared for some walking and stairs. If you’re lucky, you might also spot other wildlife, such as snakes, which adds to the experience of being close to nature. Overall, it’s a meaningful and educational visit, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about these amazing animals.
Zarina O — Google review
Lovely conservation where you get to see sun bears from various elevate platforms. The bears were busy doing things bears do, and it was nice to watch the cute creatures. Not always the best views from above or through a fence, but was still good. Lots of people on the day we went,so a bit of a tousle in some spots. Nice gift store too.
Candi M — Google review
Would highly recommend stopping at the Centre on any trip to Sepilok; it’s right next to the Orangutan Sanctuary. The facility is really well maintained and features a lot of education about sun bears and the problems they face. We had a chance to see a feeding from one of the canopy walks and it was a thrill for the whole family. The gift shop is also really good!
Robin S — Google review
An absolutely amazing place doing incredibly important work! All the sun bears here have been rescued from captivity or poor living conditions, and now they’re being cared for and gradually reintroduced to a more natural environment. It’s inspiring to see how much effort goes into their rehabilitation. I really can’t agree with some of the negative reviews that criticize the fences. The enclosures are essential for the bears’ safety and well-being — not all of them can live together, and the separation helps prevent conflicts. The fencing also protects the bears from wandering into nearby plantations, where they could cause damage and, unfortunately, risk being killed by local farmers. This is a truly meaningful conservation project and a must-visit when in Sepilok!
Phil N — Google review
The BSBCC is right next door to the famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, sharing the same entrance and parking area, just a short walk or 2–3 minute drive apart. That makes it easy to combine both visits in one trip. The trail and viewing area are quite short, it only takes about 10 to 20 minutes to walk through, and there aren’t many bears visible at once. While the information boards are helpful, the cost of admission feels high compared to the time spent inside. Visiting the centre is meaningfully appealing if you're already at Sepilok and want to support sun bear conservation. But bear in mind it's a short, supplementary stop, not a full wildlife experience.
SOPIAH H — Google review
50rm entree, but you can pay by card! Would be amazing if you could buy a 2 in 1 ticket with the orang otang centre. We did see many bears and loved the talk with the workers. They have a free cold water refill point in the first building after the entrance, and a shop at the end to buy some souvenirs.
Marnix M — Google review
A visit to Sandakan wouldn’t be complete without stopping by this remarkable conservation centre. It is exceptionally well-managed and maintained, offering visitors valuable insights into Bornean Sun Bears and their natural habitat. You’ll also have the opportunity to observe these fascinating creatures safely up close.
Chung W — Google review
Great experience supporting an important cause. The staff are passionate and dedicated to protecting the world’s smallest bear species. Credit cards not accepted, but there’s free luggage storage on site. Worth a visit if you’re in Sepilok.

Pusat Pemuliharaan Orang Utan Sepilok, located about 25km north of Sandakan, is a renowned center that covers 40 sq km of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve. Established in 1964, it aims to rehabilitate orphaned and injured orangutans before releasing them back into the wild. The facility includes a nursery viewing area where visitors can observe young orangutans at play.
this attraction draws crowds of tourists, opening hours9-16:00 [lunch break 12-14:00]. first, no food, drink and backpacks or bags allowed, storage lockers are provided, then let learn how our wildlife companions rehab., nurtured. starting from observatory room at nursery , then going on platform to watch our friends fed on their natural habitat. it's crowded but well organized flow of visitors allows visiting the center more pleasant.
Chajchawan N — Google review
This is a sanctuary with both resident orangutans and wild ones who come in knowing there is food available. The experience of seeing them is incredible. As with natural encounters, one cannot predict the numbers seen. I was lucky to have a mother and baby come out for a walk where the humans were so had a very close encounter. An older alpha male was also at the feeding on the day of my visit. One benefit of coming out during rainy season is the smaller crowds.
Christine H — Google review
One of must visit location if you are in Sandakan, and at the same time helping the conservation efforts, the fund generated from all activities in this centre will help towards the conservation. This place has a lot to offer, an opportunity to learn to better understand the importance of orang utan conservation, and making memories with our family take pictures of your journey and make a chance no matter how little we can contribute.
AshRizal — Google review
I came here on two separate occasions once I went to the morning feeding at 10 am and another time I went to the afternoon feeding at 3 pm. Although this is a very small sample size, from my experience with the two, the afternoon feeding event is better than the morning one. There were less people and more orangutans than the morning one. There were too many people and lots of macaques eating the fruit instead of the orangutans during the morning session, as well as more tour buses outside and more people at the platform. Just so everyone is aware you can't take bags into the sanctuary. You have to leave them in a locker so allow a little bit of extra time for this if you were unaware. This comes at no extra cost. In the nursery, I've got to see an alpha male orangutan which was cool to see. The Browne Town.
Stephen B — Google review
We did both the morning and afternoon sessions, and we had a much better experience in the afternoon. The morning was too packed full of big tour bus loads of people, the afternoon session you could get a spot at the front easy and not be shoved around. A worker told us to wait a few minutes for the big bus tour people to leave the nursery so we could get down to the window for a closer look. We saw orangutan at the feeding platform both sessions, and the nursery was more active in the afternoon session. You have to lock your bags away in a locker room, and the gift shop was very small and didn't have a great range of products. Better items at the airport shops. It was a good price, especially being able to use the same ticket in the afternoon.
Lauren B — Google review
Incredible experience! I recommend getting there at 9am, when they open to get a good spot for the feeding time at the outdoor nursery area. They put food in the outdoor nursery between 9.30 and 2.30pm, and on the main platform between 10 and 3. We saw a few baby orangutans and adults, they all looked very happy and free to do their own thing. We only saw one adult orangutan on the main feeding platform, but it got scared away by the pig tailed macaques, so we didn't see it eat anything. It does look like the orangutans have lots of food in the jungle they can eat there too and it can always come back at a later time as food is provided throughout the day. We're not fans of zoos, so we were skeptical about coming here, wondering about the Ethical side of it. However, it isn't a zoo. The orangutans can come and go whenever they want, and there isn't any interaction with the feeders. There is also a great educational center, which i recommend going to as well.
Hannah B — Google review
We had never seen Orangutans before, only in books and on TV. To witness them moving around in the wild was nothing short of incredible. The experience was well-organized, with all visitors strictly kept to a designated path and led to observation rooms, where we could watch the Orangutans come for the fruits and vegetables provided twice a day, a Macaque even made an appearance. The animals are in no way contained and have no human interaction, which made it feel even more special. We were lucky enough to see a magnificent male Orangutan with stunning, long red fur. We also spotted several mothers carrying their young. They were so playful, we could have watched them for hours, but eventually, they wandered off into the jungle. As we continued our walk along the boardwalk, which wound through the lush jungle with its towering trees, we encountered more Orangutans. It was a truly unforgettable experience. Since we purchased our tickets in the morning, we had the chance to observe them again during the afternoon feeding. The fee was RM 30 per adult tourist, and there was an additional RM 10 charge for a small camera. After the tour, we treated ourselves to ice cream at the cafeteria, a perfect end to such a memorable day.

Nature Lodge, one of the top lodging options in the area, provides a refreshing swimming pool for guests' relaxation. Amazing place to explore Borneo’s rainforest, both by day and night. Night walks are organized, make sure to book in advance at the ticket counter once here. The canopy walkways are a highlight, offering unique views of the jungle. Long hiking trails available—trekking shoes and mosquito repellent highly recommended. Entry is paid and credit cards are not accepted. Plan to spend 3–4 hours.

Beautiful small park which gives you the jungle feeling whilst walking on a trail or canopy walk way. It can get really hot and humid here, so be prepared. Down side? Families with children making a lot of noice or groups of teenage schoolkids playing music/tiktok on their phones can scare of the wildelife.
Jip J — Google review
If I had my time again, I would come directly at opening and I would book in for the night walk. This is where you get the most value out of the animal activity. If you come during the middle of the day it is too hot and animals are not active. If, like me, you've just been into Sandakan and you have no other option - It's definitely still worth a visit. I walked some of the paths and I walked through the canopy although I didn't see much wildlife. I still enjoyed the experience walking around the lake and through the canopy of the trees. It's a beautiful spot and to get the best out of it. You really want to spend as much time as you possibly can and book yourself in for a guided night walk. The Browne Town.

What an experience! We did the night walk and our guide Ross Lee (apologies for the spelling), was great. Of course you can't predict nature but we managed to see a great mix of wild and wonderful animals. It must be noted that it is very humid and because it's dark and the grounds are uneven it's not the easiest of walks. I can imagine during the day it is equally stunning but we didn't have time (plus I think in the day you'll need binoculars which we didn't have). It's a must do activity!
Isaac P — Google review
Very nice to stroll during the day but even cooler during the guided night walks at 6pm and 8pm (the park closes at 5pm for regular visits). For self guided waks its best to go early in the morning or before closing. More animal activity and cooler.

I didn’t manage to really walk on the suspension bridge as my aunty was waiting inside the car. I only managed to take a few of the beautiful lotus flowers from the pond and visited a garden. If I have the opportunity to travel to Sandakan in the near future I will definitely walk around.

Gotta say, highly recommend this! Wish I could have stayed longer and spent more time walking the paths. Didn't see many animals, but it was a true rainforest experience. Make sure you go to the top of the towers!

The Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) is the gateway to getting to know the uniqueness and importance of Borneo’s rainforests. Look around and you will enjoy the beautiful flora and fauna found within this area. Situated 23 kilometres from Sandakan Town, RDC is within walking distance from the renown Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre and Bornean Sunbear Conservation Centre. The main highlight of this green place is of course its skywalk with an extensive lenght of 620 meters, the longest in Sabah. Among other attractions in RDC are the opportunities to walk around the many loop trails around the Kabili-Sepilok forest reserve, Sepilok Giant, Plant Discovery Garden, exhibition hall and marvel at the breath-taking nature view around their iconic lake. In 2009, RDC was recognized internationally as Important Bird Area (IBA) and will often be a stopover point for birding tours in Sandakan. Among the endemic species, one may be fortunate enough to observe the Bornean Bristlehead, Blue-headed Pitta, Sabah Partridge, Bornean Banded Kingfisher, Cream-eyed Bulbul, Charlotte’s Bulbul and Bornean Black Magpie. Other significant sightings are the various species of hornbills, pittas, flycatchers, and raptors; especially Wallace’s Hawk Eagle. It’s no surprise that the annual Borneo Bird Festival, which attracts birdwatchers from all over the world, usually chooses RDC as a host venue.

Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary - Entrance

Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, situated approximately 45 km from the main city of Sandakan, offers a unique opportunity to observe Borneo's indigenous proboscis monkeys up close. The sanctuary, established in 2000 within an oil palm estate, is home to one of the largest isolated populations of these monkeys, numbering around 300. Visitors can witness scheduled feedings and observe other wildlife such as silvered-leaf langurs and oriental-pied hornbills.
Labuk Bay is a great place to see proboscis monkeys in their natural habitat. I went to Platform A and had a fantastic view of the monkeys during feeding time. Make sure to check the feeding schedule on the website before visiting. From the main entrance, you’ll need to drive about 1.5 km to reach the platform entrance. The walking paths are flat and easy, and you might also spot other wildlife. A must-visit for nature and wildlife lovers!

It's expensive for what you get. They feed monkeys and keep the profit and own the land, unlike the Orangutan sanctuary. Way over priced ... Would skip if needed.

Wonderful experience and must see if you’re in the area. The trip to the place is a bit bumpy, but worth it. We went with two small children, and the loved it. You can be driven all the way to the feeding platforms, and the place is stroller friendly. There are fans, and you can buy drinks and snacks. Watching the wild monkeys, was a really fun experience! Highly recommended

This is one of the places that I would recommend people to come if you like nature. I noticed most of the tourists especially Caucasians only visit Sepilok for orang utan and Kinabatangan river but never come here. I was very happy that I decided to visit this place, we managed to see a pair of Hornbills, I thought we won’t be able to see it since it was already 2-3pm and the workers had tried calling them so many times. Thankfully they eventually came. I have seen proboscis monkeys years ago when we visited Bako in Kuching, that day we saw a family of 9. I would highly recommend anyone to visit this place. Infact can give it a miss for Kinabatangan river, it’s not easy to spot Hornbills, let alone Elephants. On the way reaching this place we saw some small plots of agriculture land planted with cucumber, ladies fingers and we saw a water buffalo too.
Carol Y — Google review
The good: The monkeys are free in their conservation area so it's not a zoo. The bad: It seems like a very small place of forest that's left for them to roam freely. The palm oil plantation is right up until the very edge. Drove from Kinabalu to sepilok and the last hour of driving before sepilok is unfortunately nothing but palm oil plantations
Leon T — Google review
I was really excited to come and see these animals up close, but after reading the reviews, I’m so glad I did my research first. Learning that the owner destroyed their natural habitat and is now profiting from it doesn’t sit right with me. I will not be going. I won’t be supporting this place and would advise others to avoid it as well. It’s hard to understand how anyone could do this and sleep peacefully at night.
Lee B — Google review
Hard to express my feelings but I didn’t feel comfortable to see that proboscis monkeys are feeding like that then I left early. I was so ignorance to believe this is a sanctuary, but actually this place is belong to the palm plantation owners who destroyed the habitat of monkeys and other wildlife. They are now still make money from them by feeding them and sell the ticket for ignorance tourist like me. Such a disgusting business. So sad that I didn’t read the review before going . When talking to the driver, he revealed that the real owners behind of the plantation and “sanctuary“ are Chinese. Please don’t go there and support those kinds of people by our money. Return the wildlife to that poor but lovely creatures. And if you want to see proboscis monkeys in the wildlife, go to Kinabatangan River, at KOPEL, they did a good job on the reforestation and creating the habitat for orangutans, proboscis and other animals.
Kayla N — Google review
Amazing place, well worth going! We were at Platform B at around 1pm and we were the only ones there. Could already see the monkeys where we parked but they were a lot in very close proximity (within 5m), bring binoculars for the best experience! We were at platform A for the 2.30pm feeding, WOW the monkeys are already waiting well before 2.30pm. Great experience to see wild monkeys up close but could do with more information. Warning: the roads are absolutely atrocious and Internet connection is very limited. Price for foreigners is significantly marked up

Deramakot Forest Reserve is a sustainable rainforest located in Malaysia's Borneo Island that is home to various exotic animals such as the clouded leopard, orangutans, and Borneo elephants. The vastness of the island makes it impossible to explore every hidden gem, but Deramakot offers a unique opportunity to witness wildlife that one may have never seen before, like the leopard cat.
We went to Dermakot Forest Reserve for 4 nights, it was amazing! I can recommend it to everyone!! - the rooms are very clean, basic but perfect. You even have airco, hot shower and power all day. - the food, it was just amazing! We enjoyed every meal we got, so tastefull and well prepared. For the safari's, it is really nice you can choose how to spend the driving time each day and what to do. The driver did really good although the roads are pretty bumpy! Our guide, Lister, I think everyone should ask for him while booking. :) we loved him! His English is really good, his knowledge even better so lots to tell and explain. He spotted alot of animals!! Even the smallest during night, I really don't know how he does it, but it's great! This was our first stop in Borneo arranged by Safari Acacia, I can really say they arranged it perfectly, so if you are looking to arrange your safari, check them out! And as mentioned, ask for Lister as guide! :)

To be clear- I’m simply reviewing the accommodations/lodging here, not the wildlife experience (which was excellent thanks to our private guide!!). From what I gathered talking to other guests, not all guides are equally qualified or skilled , so that will affect your overall experience!! The rooms were small, dingy, and filthy! Beds were terrible with stained, worn out sheets and towels with holes! Basically gross! The meal area was dirty as well and trash bins were overflowing on the outside porch area- dirty table cloths and nobody seemed to do anything about that! The food was edible but not that great! I didn’t expect luxury here, but a basic place CAN be clean- no reason that it can’t be done! Other places I’ve been to managed that- it just would make the experience so much better! If it wasn’t for our guide who spotted a ton of things, I would not have stayed the 4 nights that we booked here! Pretty much all the other guests I met during that time were equally shocked and disenchanted with the place and most didn’t see half the things we did, because their guides were not as talented, so I highly recommend to do your research before you book this place! We’ve been all over Sabah and all the other places we stayed at, including the basic ones, were comfortable and clean!

I don’t know where to start, but my partner and I had the most incredible three days at Deramakot and were left in awe. We were drawn to it at the possibility of spotting an elusive clouded leopard; but soon learned the experience was so much more than that. Having researched many different agents we decided to go with Sukau Greenview Lodges as we were already booked on a 3D2N river cruise with them, and they provided the best value for money we could find. We paid 2,500 MYR per pax for 3D2N at the Forest including all meals and our guided safaris. We had no regrets! Luckily we ended up with a private tour as no other guests had booked on, and we were picked up by our guide Hamit Suban. Hamit lived in Malaysian Borneo all of his life and had so much knowledge about the area, very kindly answering our many questions! His ability to spot wildlife with the smallest light flicker, movement or change of smell was astonishing. We were blown away by his skills and passion for the job, and learnt so much. The food at the reserve is to a very good standard and they cater to all tastes/cuisines. Although it states basic accommodation we were very pleasantly surprised by the chalets, they were clean and comfy, exactly all you need after hours out on safari. The guides have binoculars but we also rented a pair for 50,000 MYR which was totally worth it. We bought leech socks at the market in sandakan prior and recommend you have good shoes/rain jacket (ideally body length), as although the walking is generally minimal and optional, the long hours on safari can some with a change in weather. We saw a family of 5 gibbons pretty close, many flying squirrels, a slow loris who climbed right down close to us, giant squirrels, about 6 Malaysian civets which are gorgeous, 4 leopard cats, orang-utans (a mother with a one month baby and juvenile preparing a nest, unreal!), many eagles, pheasant, small otters, porcupine and many other small mammals and birds. Lastly, we were lucky enough to spot two baby marbled cats which was surreal. Each sighting is thrilling no matter what you are seeing, and we didn’t anticipate the small things to bring so much joy. We went with no expectations and that’s the only way to visit as you can’t plan nature, but it’s an unmissable experience and we can’t stop raving about it. From dinner in the depths of the jungle, stunning sunrise and sunset over the canopies and being in touch with the simplicity and beauty of being hours from anywhere - it has a piece of our heart! Thanks to Hamit for an unforgettable time at Deramakot, we cannot recommend your services enough! Don’t sleep on it, people! Best, C + C

We used Adventure Alternative Borneo to organize our trip deramkaot It was flawless. The office team was incredible with answering many questions and so patient. I seriously cannot thank them enough for the support and help for planning this trip. The guides and drivers we had through the trip were remarkable at finding wildlife and keeping us safe the entire trip. We would have missed so much if it was not for their skilled spotting abilities and we are grateful for their expertise. This company is the one to use if planning a trip to Borneo as we saw lots of companies through our trip and we felt that AAB was above and beyond. Thank you to the AAB team!

We organize a tour in Deramakot with Alternative Adventure Borneo. Communications were really easy and clear; the organization was just perfect. In Deramakot you will find a nice and simple room and tasteful meals (I am vegetarian and they always proposed me a good alternative). The forest tour are long and full of sightings and emotions. We were lucky enough to see many animals (including: an Orangutan, some Bornean elephants, a Slow loris, a Leopard cat, two Sambar deers, many Red giant flyng squirrels, two mouse-deers, a Colugo, three different species of civets, a flying Blyth's paradise-flycatcher, Some chestnut-brested Malkohas.... and so on and so forth), but the greatest fortune we had was having Mike as our guide. He has incredible eyes to spot the most elusive animals and he can be funny as hell! I highly reccomend Adventure Alternative Borneo and Deramakot forest reserve if you are planning to visit Sabah.

We had a great series of sightings in the jungle. There appeared to be a limited number of routes to travel on through the jungle so wouldn’t spend too long there. Also I’d check and make sure they’re not logging there when you go as the roads would be shared with trucks. Cautionary note: avoid this if you’re coming from kota Kinabalu. We were told it would take 7hrs but it took 14

We chose Adventure Alternative Borneo for our Deramakot trip because of the very positive reviews here. I was skeptical how one-sided the reviews were. Now I know. A friendly meet up at Telupid gave a false hope that it would be a nice trip. [Serious safety alert] On the second day, after the morning drive, the guide told us to meet up at 15:30 for the afternoon drive. So we gathered at the doorstep of our house at 15:30, waited for 15 min before going to check what happened, only to find the guide and driver sleeping in their room. Apparently whisky had been drunk, as a half full bottle and glasses were seen on the table (see attached photo). When the guide finally got up to talk to us, he denied having said 15:30 for the pm drive, and instead claimed that there were only am and night drives for the day, according to the itinerary. But it was clearly written in the itinerary that there are 3 drives per day (anyone can check the itinerary on AAB’s website). At the end we had to settle birding on foot ourselves for the afternoon. I couldn’t imagine riding on a 4WD driven by a drunk driver in the dirt track of the forest, guided by a drunk guide. The guide denying what he said earlier: https://youtu.be/7mXzTD6hE0k As for the reserve itself, based on my 4D3N stay, I didn’t see the abundance of wildlife I had expected, definitely not comparable to Kinabatanga or Tabin. I guess for this reserve, you just have to stay at least a week to be able to see some more species and/or rare stuff. Here, it can go half an hour without a single mammal sighting in the night safari drive even in perfect weather. I would not recommend AAB, even if you choose to try your luck in Deramakot.

Excellent wildlife viewing (particularly for Orangutans) available and surprisingly good facilities at base camp. Very expensive compared to other wildlife tours in Sabah but I think it's worth it if you're a wildlife enthusiast. We went during the middle of the rainy season and still managed to see a wide variety of wildlife. I imagine it would be an even better experience during the dry season.

Sabah Tea Resort Restaurant

Restaurant
Sabah Tea Resort in Ranau offers a unique breakfast experience with a backdrop of lush tea plantations and stunning natural scenery. The resort's restaurant serves fresh and healthy morning dishes made from high-quality local ingredients, including the popular choice of toast with tea jam. While the factory may appear abandoned, the cafe is fully operational and offers paid attractions such as a treetop deck and traditional costume rentals. Visitors can also enjoy various photo spots, although some areas of the tea farm may appear less dense.
Nestled among the lush green hills of Sabah, this restaurant serves more than just tea. It serves serenity. From the first sip of warm Sabah tea to the last glance at the misty hills, everything here feels like a postcard. If you’re ever in need of a peaceful escape paired with hearty local flavours, this is the place. Highly recommended for tea lovers, nature seekers, and anyone who needs a deep breath of calm.
Mrsrozanna — Google review
The farm isn’t very big and the tea plants aren’t neatly arranged so if you’re expecting something like Cameron Highlands, this isn’t quite it. But on the bright side you can cover the whole area pretty quickly. It can get hot, so wear something light and bring an umbrella. Most of the activities and attractions are in one area, which makes it easy to get around. The tree house canopy walkway was short and not too high, don’t expect anything super adventurous but it gives a nice bird’s-eye view of the ladang. It’s also quite breezy up there. The cafe was okay. The scones weren’t great, but the tomyam was good. We also had salted egg prawn, which was pretty sedap. Plenty of parking too, so no worries there. Tips: Get the exotic flavour series of Sabah Tea as a souvenir. I grabbed a few, lemongrass, cinnamon and ginger. Wanted to try the agarwood tea at the cafe but it was sold out and I couldn’t find it at the souvenir shops either. When I tried looking elsewhere, they only had the usual teh o ais type. Thank god i got some already at the farm!

Stopped by Sabah Tea Restaurant for a quick bite — we only had the pancakes, which were average in taste, nothing special. But the menu does offer some unique local dishes, and we saw other diners enjoying their food, so maybe the other items are better. The view of the tea plantation adds a nice touch, though it’s not exactly stunning — parts of it look a bit abandoned or not well maintained. Still, it’s a peaceful spot to sit and relax with a cup of tea. They also have a souvenir shop, but the prices are really expensive. Even the tea costs more than what you’d pay for the same Sabah Tea at retail shops down the hill.

Wont come here again and not recommended. Service is fast, venue is well maintained, view is nice. My friend ordered tomyam noodles and had “worm” on the prawn. Nobody apologised for the worm but only said free of charge for the tomyam noodles but I couldnt continue to eat my mee hoon curry. We also found a fly in Teh Tarik Pandan and the waffles is below average. Additional 1 hour drive here from kundasang is not worth it

The drive to this place is scenic and beautiful, but do note that some parts of the road are bumpy with potholes and damages—drive carefully. It gets quite hot in the area, but there’s ample parking. There’s a tree house with a short canopy walk, which is chargeable for 10 minutes (price is shown in the picture attached). We enjoyed a lovely walk along the tea plantation trail—great for taking photos and soaking in the lush greenery but bear in mind when we were there, the place was super hot. So some umbrellas or hats are advisable. We didn’t try their actual hot or cold teas, so we can’t comment on that. We only had some snacks, desserts, and drinks. Here’s what we tried: • Green tea smoothie was not good • Sirap Bandung was average • Banana fritters were okay • Green tea pancake was decent • Green tea ice cream was good • Mixed fruit platter was alright (pineapple was a bit sour, but watermelon was okay) They have traditional clothings for rent for those who are interested. Overall, it’s a nice place to visit for nature lovers and casual bites, with photo-worthy surroundings.

Nice food from the set menu of rm40 each. Would have been interesting to have an informative or educational tour of the history and process of tea making.

The food here is not up to taste. Kimchi fried rice tasted bland for a kimchi?! Sweet sour fish tasted more like sweet sauce. The most dish that I am super frustrated is the FISH FINGER. How can you serve FISH CAKE as fish finger in a RM30 DISH?!!!! RIDICULOUS! Please improve and use right fillets!!!!! The tea? Not so good to me. The scone? So so but at least that’s the most edible we could have here. Meanwhile they have no good view here, just a short hanging bridge but is chargeable at rm5 per head haha not worth it at all. It’s not like you can get a view out of it. Bad experience here I must say.

Sg. Moroli Fish Spa is a delightful escape nestled in the heart of nature, perfect for those seeking relaxation and fun. Located about 45 minutes from Kundasang Town, this serene spot features a fast-flowing river where visitors can choose to wade or dip their feet among hundreds of playful fish. For just RM4, you can enjoy the shallows, while RM8 allows for a more immersive experience.
Definitely most interesting thing to do in Kundasang/Ranau! 30 mins drive away from kundasang city centre and swarm by fish that you can feed ( fish do not eat dead skin, only fish pellets). These are koi fish/ carps so does not naturally found there but still interesting to do! Entrance fee is rm5 and there aren’t an any place to keep shoes safe and can get quite cramp so best it’s to be there early

This is our second time visiting Fish Spa Sg Moroli, and it’s still a fun and unique experience — especially for kids! One thing that makes it special is that the fish here are bigger than the usual tiny ones at other fish spas, so you can really feel them nibbling away at your feet. They also have fish food available, which makes it even more fun because you can attract more fish to come to you. My kid really enjoyed feeding the fish and watching them gather around. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in the area — relaxing, different, and a great memory for the family!

🌿 My Experience at Sg. Moroli Fish Spa, Sabah 🐟 What an unforgettable experience! At Sungai Moroli Fish Spa, I got to dip my feet into the crystal-clear river while hundreds of small fish gently nibbled away the dead skin — it felt ticklish at first but super relaxing after a while. The water was so fresh and cold, surrounded by beautiful nature and friendly locals who explained the history of the place. If you love something different and close to nature, this is definitely a must-visit spot in Sabah. Amazing park and it is one of UNESCO heritage sites. Very beautiful place to enjoy nature. but better be prepared and come in with right outfit, shoes and a big bottle of water if you plan to go to the Canopy walk since the hike will take aprx. 1000 meter up.

Canopy walk is closed for major maintenance. Butterfly garden with very few butterflies. Hotspring footspa is free, and 10rm to rent a tub for 3hours. there is a mini water park, fee applies. good to spend a hot afternoon there with family. 15min trek to a very cooling waterfall, that worth visiting! Overall a well maintained park.

Absolute waste of time and money for foreigners. The entry fee if MYR 50 per person entitles you to NOTHING except just to enter. If you like to use the hot spring you NEED to pay, if you like to use swimming pool with FREEZING water you need to pay. Overall this whole complexis very rin down and poorly maintained. Better to go to Kundasang for free breathtaking views.

place is pretty far out but worth coming for the hike to the 2 waterfalls. note that the langanan waterfall hike is pretty tough and requires hikers to start it before 9/10am. only went to the nearer waterfall and spent an hour there. there are mini fishes in the shallow waters where you can dip your feet into. very fun! there’s a restaurant inside for you to grab a meal - food was delicious.

There is also private bathtub room with RM35 per room The toilet is clean. The area is clean. The counter receptionist is friendly. Good job Sutera Sanctuary Lodges team.

50rm entrance fee for foreigners and 10rm for malaysians. I partly understand the higher tax for foreigners and if it.s for conservation purposes i.m happy to pay it. But this is one of the very few times when i feel scammed. The canopy walk was closed for maintenance, the rafflesia was not in the blooming season, the biggest hot spring was closed as well, the small ones were just some small bathtubs with faucets, Langanan Waterfall could only be reached if starting the hike before 10am (the park opens at 9am) and the butterfly had just a few butterflies. The disappointment was that none of this info was told at the ticket office, neither was it available on the park website. So basically the highlight of our visit was a 4m high waterfall and the A/C where they had the dead bugs. Would have never willingly paid 50rm for that..

The Kundasang War Memorial, established in 1962, is one of the earliest memorials dedicated to honoring the British and Australian soldiers who perished at the Sandakan POW Camp during World War II. It pays tribute to those involved in the tragic Sandakan Death March, a series of forced marches that resulted in a devastating death toll.
Kundasang War Memorial is a must visit place in Kundasang. It commemorate a horrific event of WWII where 2428 prisoners of war died. The memorial is on a hill behind Kundasang market. Inside we will find Australian Garden, English Rose Garden and Borneon Garden to mark the origins of the many POW. And the Contemplation Garden offers a poignant reminder of the horrors of war. Plenty of parking nearby. There is a small entrance fee.

Overrated place, charging entrance fee claiming as maintenance fee but not doing any maintenance. It was very obvious this place is lacking maintenance, dirty and everywhere stain of alga or lots of dried leaves. Many photos on google review are old photos, yes, they looked nice but that was many years ago. Now it look totally different and feel like abandoned place, yet they charge entrance fee. There is a small shop there, one of the guy working there has super bad attitude. When asking the direction to toilet he basically stared without answering, but, remember, on top of charging entrance fee they also charge toilet fee. And for the toilet is was super weird that they wrote on the wall asking you to save water DONT FLUSH….. I don’t recommend coming here, for any tourist.

I had no idea this place existed and I found it almost by accident but I'm really glad I did. It tells the tale of the prisoners of war from Sandakan, the death march and of the local heroes who tried to help them along the way. There are different gardens in remembrance of those from Australia, England and the local population as well as good views out to Mount Kinabalu. The cost of entry was 15 ringgit for a non-Malaysian (I think?) but this is definitely worth it. The gardens are very well kept and there is enough information to make it interesting. The Browne Town.

A place of memorial and tribute to all those lost lives during world war 2. Didn't learn this in Sejarah though. Great opportunity to learn about the real history with the existence of this kinda memorial.
Mohan K — Google review
For Malaysian you need to pay rm5 for entry. But its a good price to commemorate the fallen soldiers and their sacrifices. It's peaceful. The flowers are tended, the place is clean.
Wahidah K — Google review
It's very disappointing that this place is not well managed. If I come next year, there will most likely be nothing that has changed. For example, the landscaping of the area, the flowers are not in order, the pool water is dirty, and a lot of RM1 money & coins is thrown in, probably as a token of appreciation to the soldiers. Maybe the management can collect the money for the purpose of repairing the area. Bagi sa lh kn masuk d sini teda yg bikin WAHHH, cuma mmmmm seja🥲

Enjoyed every moment step to historical place which my kids keep asking what it said and why it happen. They took a lot of picture which really enjoy to see them learning it..the garden build if own nostalgic memory within the cabin hang a lot frame that had it story, picture and letter that touch ur ❤️ heart...will visit again
Angela L — Google review
If in the area worthy of a visit. A memorial to celebrate the lives of all those that perished on the death march, separate dedicated gardens for the Australian and British troops, the gardens are a bit run down and need some TLC, still worth the time to visit.

Mount Kinabalu Botanical Garden

Botanical garden
Nature & Parks
Nestled within the breathtaking Mount Kinabalu, the Mount Kinabalu Botanical Garden is a paradise for nature lovers. The well-maintained trails offer a leisurely stroll amidst a diverse array of vibrant flowers, exotic plants, and rare orchids. Visitors can revel in the tranquil atmosphere with the soothing sound of flowing water and the harmonious melodies of birds and insects. The garden's affordable entrance fee makes it an accessible destination for immersing oneself in nature's wonders.
I visited the botanical garden in Kinabalu Park. The air was very clear in the morning, and the temperature was around 25 degrees, which was cool and didn't make me tired even while walking. In this botanical garden, you can observe many endemic and wild plants of Borneo, such as orchids, ferns, mosses, and carnivorous plants. It is a must-visit spot for plant lovers! There are quite a few insects, so if you're not fond of them, please take insect repellent measures. We enjoyed the botanical garden with explanations about the plants from a local guide. If you are staying at a hotel near Kinabalu Park and can visit this park early in the morning, you can enjoy birdwatching. Please give it a try.
Kazu-kun — Google review
We visited Kinabalu Park as part of a guided day tour, and our primary focus was the Botanical Garden within the vast and picturesque park. Though our tour covered the entry fees — RM 50 for foreign visitors to the park and RM 5 for the Botanical Garden. We felt the visit was worthwhile as a brief stop amidst other local attractions. While the garden showcases a variety of flora, our experience would have been better had there been more orchids and any Rafflesia in bloom. If you're primarily interested in wildlife, be advised that animal sightings were limited to the occasional squirrel, lizard, and butterflies. The garden does offer a chance to appreciate the delicate beauty of a damp forest environment. We did not hike Mount Kinabalu, which wasn’t part of our itinerary, thus our exploration was restricted to the paths. We spent around 30 minutes wandering through the garden before moving on. Overall, while it may not warrant a dedicated trip, it serves as a pleasant interlude in a day filled with other local sights.
Bridgitte * — Google review
People will see different value in the botanical gardens depending on their level of interest in plants and whether or not they have a guide to explain things to them or not. This was an additional fee to the national park entry however from memory this was a very low fee. I came here by myself unguided and to me, the main appeal was just the photography. I got lucky in that there was a low hanging mist and fog through the gardens which made for some cool photos. However I think you would get more value from this if you did it with a guide who could point out the different types of plants to you. The Browne Town.

The BG is in the national park so there's a entrance fee and another fee to enter the botanical garden! We found the botanical garden average nothing impressive.

Lovely place to visit to see natural forest plants. Great walking tracks around the park.

Located within the Kinabalu Park, and known for its rich biodiversity and well-maintained trails. You can choose to explore it on your own or hire an optional guide to enhance your experience with detailed insights into the unique flora, including rare orchids and pitcher plants. The trek takes approximately 15 to 45 minutes, depending on your pace and curiosity. With easy-to-navigate paths and scenic surroundings, it’s an excellent spot for a peaceful stroll amidst nature.

Beautiful waterfall, well maintained place with path to the falls. No hike at all. We went in the afternoon yet nobody was there. Was nice to have the place for ourselves. There a hiking trail that you can take to see a huge tree.

Easy access by car and 100+ meter walk on concrete floor. Beware slippery during rainy day. Surrounded by pristine rainforest while you walk into the waterfall.

Came here during a roadtrip to sabah..it wasnt a plan actually..i just drove till i reach this beautifully and magnificent waterfall..based on my sabahan friend suggestion..it was an hour and 20 minutes drive from KK via penampang..and the road to this waterfall are well paved...not too far from main road..approximately around 6km..once u arrive there, u need to register first and pay some entrance fee which is RM6 for malaysian (adult)..from the main gate, just walk for about 500 metres more...not too worries as it is mostly flat and very well paved trails ..the weather were so nice..it was cool and airy..until u see the waterfall at the end of the path..check out my photos...i highly recommended to you if u guys ever visited tambunan..please give a thoughts of this place...

One of the waterfall that you can find here in Sabah. The enviroment is so calm and you can enjoy the nature. The waterfall consider tall. The enterance fee RM6 affordable for me who cme from KK drive about 2 hours but worth it.

Not too deep from the main road. Carparking freely, and walking distance to the water fall. After purchased ticket from the counter then walk in freely and enjoy the nature all the way to the waterfall. First time here to explore the natural wind from the waterfall. And the weathered rock just felt the years of edification.

Fun family trip. Greeted right away by friendly guides. Site also houses a museum of sorts and clean toilets. We signed up for the short hike to see the Rafflesia before coming back to hose off our shoes and checked out the museum. A lot of information about Rafflesia sp, I wish there were more children-related info/activities board. Toilet is really clean and plenty of parking around. One of the must-do for visitors or locals alike.

We drop by this Rafflesia IC, and we need to hire a guide. Cost to hire a guide is RM50 while to enter is RM5 per pax. Need to drive out to the main road, turn left and drive until you see the brown wall on the left. We entered, parked our car and looked for our guide. We have to do a little walk and hike in the jungle to spot the Rafflesia.
Gary O — Google review
Really knowledgeable staff. 15MYR to enter, as a conservation fee, and 100MYR per group (up to 5) for a guide. I highly suggest the guide, because they will bring you to the flowers, which would otherwise be very hard to find. They will also answer your questions. Went in February and saw 2: about 30cm each. One on day 3 of bloom, one on day 1.
Cassy J — Google review
About 1.5hrs drive from KK. Entrance fee was RM5/pax and RM50/5pax to hire tour guide (compulsory) for Malaysian. Foreigner will be x2 the price. Great place to see rafflesia. Have to trek 700m down on the day I visited. Sadly, it was raining on that day when we trek up. Recommended to standby a raincoat and wear covered shoes.
LengLeng — Google review
We turned up here to see the flower and there was one rafflesia on day 4 of bloom! It was only 350m into the forest! We paid 130rm for 2 people. Our guide was really good and he also took us to see the other dead flowers and the berry tree that is used to make coffee here. We only stopped here for around 30 minutes.
Jade R — Google review
You can call or visit Sabah Tourism Board at Gaya Street. The number on this page is yet to be updated, they will update the contact number. Sabah Tourism Board at Gaya Street would be able to tell you there are how many plots that are having Rafflesia flower on that day as the Rafflesia Information Centre in Tambunan will keep them updated. The entrance to the Rafflesia centre is RM5 fpr Malaysian and the guided tour is RM50 for Malaysia (maximum 5 person in a group, if you have 5 person, RM50 will be devided into 5 person), I went alone, so I paid RM50, the tour is worth it. The tour guide is Wanisa, the lady in the photo. She is very informative, and kind enough to share her experience and knowledge about Rafflesia. Be extra careful with your steps cause you won't know what you will step on, follow the tour guide steps. I had a really great tour and learnt a lot about Rafflesia. Thanks to Wanisa. Do visit the gallery to read about Rafflesia before going to the tour.
Terence T — Google review
The museum is nice you can read a lot about the flowers and even about some other things, the guide was friendly and was really thoughtful to make sure we are careful and safe while we were walking even though the path wasn’t neither dangerous or hard at least for us but still very nice from her, and we were also so lucky to see not only one, but three Rafflesias blooming that day! Had a really good time, I would recommend to everyone who loves nature and flowers to come here, I think the money you pay is nothing to see this unique flower, really amazing! So thankful for this opportunity!
Rebeka E — Google review
I was driving from Tambunan to Kota Kinabalu when I saw this on the right. I pulled in. I only had 30 minutes max to see a Rafflesia in the wild. I was on my own so the RM115 was pricey but you are seeing a Rafflesia Pricei so what do you expect. A friendly guide drives you down the road and you clamber down a muddy track to see three flowers. One live, one dying and one sort of half way. I was lucky. Sometime there aren’t any blooming or they are far away. I’m glad I did it.

This is the first time me and my family going to the beach resort in Kota Belud to celebrate family day with friends. The beach is so clean. And the view is so beautiful. They have a restaurant, cafe and mini store for snack and drinks. There is a lot of activities you can do here. The room price is affordable. We decided to stay one night to see what it's like. It's rain at night, and some of the roof is leaking. Two of the mattresses and pillows is wet. The room need to repair. But at 3 o'clock at dawn, the rain has stop. Me and my husband got awake by someone trying to get in our room. I shout until that guy run away while stealing my husband slippers, and leaving his own slippers halfway on the stairs through our door. In the morning, 2 person coming in front of our room, and giving back my husband slippers without saying anything until we ask what's going on. They said it was their brother that got drunk and forgot the way? It's weird? Theirs room is below us. Anyway, it's was nice listening to the ocean when you sleep. We enjoy and like the place. We would like to come again. There's a lot of activities we haven't try yet at dragon beach resort.

We visited for the day only . Firstly the beach is stunning ! By far the best beach in the area . There was not a single piece of trash on this beach, and the water was calm and clear . The staff do a great job keeping the beach clean (if only other beaches were like this) We had lunch and dinner and a couple of tiger beers whilst there . The food was basic but good and the beer was cold. All in all, this is a great place to spend a day , maybe next time we will book a room

I regularly dive with Bigfin and have had many memorable experiences with them. It was actually Bigfin that introduced us to a whale shark encounter, which I was fortunate to capture on video. That very video went on to win a competition—a moment I’ll never forget. Our dive last week was nothing short of amazing, with excellent visibility and vibrant marine life. If possible, I would love to dive with Bigfin every two weeks!
Ho M — Google review
Over the past 15 years I've had over 350 dives around the world and have never come across anywhere like Bigfin. It's not going to be for everyone. People who DON'T enjoy amazing diving whilst staying at a friendly all inclusive resort should not go as you'll ruin it for those who will have an incredible time. My niece took her Padi OW with Jack as her instructor. We joined her for her 4th dive and her buoyancy, air consumption and understanding was beyond what I've encountered with many Advanced OW divers with 20+ dives. I'd recommend anyone considering their OW to train with Jack. The fun dives at Bigfin's "special" location were a surprise. We were a little unlucky with the weather as we caught the tail end of a storm from further north and Kindu cautioned us that the viz may not be the best. The viz was around 10m but there was so much to see that we begged to return here on every subsequent dive. The variety of marine fauna and flora was a real surprise. Coral Cat Sharks Bamboo Sharks Rays Peacock Mantis Small octopus and the largest octopus I've seen anywhere All types of colorful nudibranchs and flat worms Crocodile fish **Frog Fish** Along with many other creatures. Kindu was one of the best Dive Masters I've dived with. Thorough, fun, safe and didn't miss spotting the smallest and largest creatures underwater. The boat was handled brilliantly by Capt Omar. There were never any safety issues on the drops or pick ups and he ferried us to the dive spots comfortably in the well laid out boat. The equipment was mostly Mares and all was in good condition. Water temp was a comfortable 30°C so a shorty wetsuit will more than suffice here. The food at the resort is local style. Brekkie: banana pancakes /eggs and toast/ fruit Lunch: Some form of meat dishes, rice /noodles, veggies and fruit Dinner: Different meat dishes, rice/ noodles and veggies. We all really enjoyed the food. If you get to visit and sample Chef Awie's fried chicken or his Nasi Lemak, you'll be comparing it to fried chicken and nasi lemak everywhere else you travel in Malaysia. The rooms are really well designed. No air-conditioning which was a slight concern as I personally like to sleep cold but the location of the rooms allows for a good breeze and the fan is more than adequate. A lot of our downtime was spent in hammocks. There are hammocks on your deck, where you can enjoy views across the bay to Mt Kinabalu along with hammocks around the gardens and on the beach. We stayed 6 days and wished we could stay longer. Kayaking to the island is easy and takes 20mins at a leisurely pace. Snorkelling was mixed with some days being amazing where we saw eels, clown fish, Squid and nudibranchs and other days after the storm when we could barely see each other. There is absolutely no doubt that we'll be returning! Tip: pack light /use rucksack and wear swimmers/boardshorts and flip flops for the boat transfer from Dragon Beach to Big Fin as you may need to enter the boat in knee deep water on certain sides.

We stayed here for 3 nights after 4 nights staying in Sepilok and Kinatangtan. The speed boat transfer from Dragon Pearl Beach resort was a fun start to our stay. Although we didn’t dive, we (family of 4 with kids age 6 and 8) still had plenty to do - snorkelling, kayaking and playing games on the beach etc. The beach and sea were clean, the staff were happy and friendly and the food was fantastic! So impressed with the delicious food they prepare in a small kitchen with limited electricity. The rooms were clean and tidy and all had beautiful views. We got lucky and had a bunch of lovely other guests staying at the same time. This place seems to attract people who were are kind and friendly and it was nice for the kids to hang out together.

We had an amazing time diving with Big Fin Divers. We were taken care of all the time, the difficulty level was properly adjusted to our needs (AOWD and intro), the atmosphere was great, our divemasters were helpful, kind and informative. Beautiful beach resort that host various activities especially diving! A divers paradise and a beautiful view away from the hustle and bustle of Kota Kinabalu City. Located in a remote area near Kota Belud this resort is magnificent with the beautiful skies, scenery and breeze that it offers all day long. Their dive sites are pristine too! With 20M plus visibility on good days it’s a really good experience for divers who hunt for new experiences. Their rooms are fully equipped with everything you need, and feels very cozy and warm. The staff are very friendly and professional.

We had such an amazing time here. Family of four (11yo, 5yo) and it was just perfect. Food was amazing (chef Awie makes everyone three meals a day - best pancakes, excellent local style lunch and dinner). All the staff were super friendly and chill. The vibe was just right - doesn’t matter if you’re a diver or not (we weren’t but we did kayak and snorkel). Beaches are out of this world and the rooms, although basic, were all you’d ever need. Highly recommend!
James G — Google review
Overall a great experience to stay and learn diving. The place is well maintained, clean, serene, and self sustaining through its water and electricity supply. WiFi is provided in common areas with lights off at 11:30am due to lack of cellular reception. Diving instructors here are friendly and patient. As for mine, he clarified uncertainties and was patient throughout the whole process. A huge shoutout to Jo, Kak Ros, Ella, Jel, Lee, Maman, Faizal, Sal and the rest of the team who made it an enjoyable vacation from start to finish. Despite being injured, they made a smile throughout the stay. *Note: If you’re looking for someone to drive you here, you can reach out to Faizal. His contact can be shared by the hostess here. ** Corals here are bleached. However, if you swim to deeper areas, the marine life here is magnificent. Was able to see an olive ridley turtle, lion fishes, angel fishes, clown fishes, and many more during a dive. Whale shark are seasonable (January) while manta rays are rare. *** A place to relax and dive but not really for snorkelling. **** The accommodations are located on the hill. Would recommend to bring an easy carrying bag such as a bag pack/duffel bag as guest are to carry their own belongings up. However, they’ll assist in bringing your items into and out of the boat from common areas.

The Upside Down House Sabah, also known as Rumah Terbalik, is a quirky and fun attraction in Kota Kinabalu. This unique house is built upside down, with everything from furniture to decorations turned on its head. Visitors of all ages can enjoy the museum's 3D art and take photos in the various rooms like the living room, bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, and balcony. Although photography inside the house is not allowed, guests can still capture memorable moments outside.

Interesting concept. There's not much u can do here other than enjoying the view and taking some pictures outside. We were not allowed to take pictures inside tho...But it was interesting. The staff were friendly and accommodating. They also have a souvenir shop here if u are interested. I bought some cute stickers here for my journal. 😆

Visited Rumah Terbalik in Sabah and it was quite a unique experience! The whole house is literally built upside down, furniture, decorations, even the car outside. It’s fun and creative, especially for taking interesting photos. The staff were friendly and gave a short guided tour explaining the concept and details of the house. The only thing to note is that photography isn’t allowed inside, which was a bit disappointing since the interior is the most interesting part. Still, the tour was short and informative, and there’s a small souvenir shop at the exit. Overall, it’s a fun and quirky stop, great for families and anyone looking for something different to see in Sabah.

Very unique. A place of attraction. The owner is innovative to construct an upside down house to attract the attention of the tourists in order to introduce the culture of the local bajau where the house has a distinct open concept. The kitchen, the sitting room and the common area are not divided with walls.

Dalit Bay Golf & Country Club is a stunning 18-hole golf course located just 27 km from Kota Kinabalu. The well-maintained course offers a picturesque setting with Mount Kinabalu in the background and abundant wildlife around, including monitor lizards, herons, eagles, and more. While it's an easy course for low handicappers, beginners may find it challenging due to water hazards on most holes. The clubhouse is clean and exquisite, but the restaurant opens late.
The golf course is well-maintained and offers a fantastic experience for golfers of all skill levels. The greens are lush, and the fairways are perfectly kept, making for an enjoyable and challenging game. The layout is thoughtfully designed, with beautiful scenery surrounding each hole. The staff are friendly and professional, providing excellent customer service. Additionally, the clubhouse offers great amenities, and the overall atmosphere is welcoming and relaxing. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or a beginner, this course provides a wonderful place to play and enjoy the sport. If you play bad it is not course fault it is your fault.

Fantastic meal and a good go at the driving range where we saw a Saltwater crocodile (!) and Monitors. Birds are also all around the course. Staff are great, as in the rest of the Rasa Ria resort.

Lovely 18 hole course which is part of the Rasa Ria resort. Challenging course with lots of water hazards. Par 3 11th home is very picturesque. Great wildlife around whilst playing - we saw monitor lizards, herons, eagles, Macau monkeys, humming birds + other birds & insects. Hire clubs available with gold buggies. Recommend early tee off time due to heart & humidity. We played at 8sm & then 6.30am - the latter being the better time. Cost for a round with buggy & hire clubs was c£85. Highly recommended.

Nice scenery, nature-friendly. The green is well maintained. We can see komodo king lizards And dont forget to keep your bag safe from monkeys

We only visited the driving range, which was shooting balls into a lake in a beautiful setting. The course looked great but we didn't actually play it. Staff were helpful and nice and the restaurant was good too.

Just played a round at Dalit Bay Golf & Country Club in Sabah — what a hidden gem! ⛳️ The course is beautifully laid out between the sea, rivers, and rainforest, with Mount Kinabalu peeking through on clear days. Super peaceful and scenic — definitely one of the most relaxing rounds I’ve had. The fairways were in great shape, greens rolled true, and it’s challenging enough to keep things interesting without being frustrating. Lots of water hazards though — so bring a few extra balls 😅. The course winds through the Shangri-La Rasa Ria resort, so you get that luxury vibe. Staff were very polite, helpful, and the buggies had GPS (always a bonus). After the round, we chilled at the clubhouse with a cold drink and watched the sun dip behind the hills — perfect end to the day. Only heads-up: it can get hot midday, so I recommend an early tee-off. And it’s a bit of a drive from Kota Kinabalu town, but worth the trip if you’re in the area. If you're a golfer visiting Sabah, this one’s a must-play. Beautiful, calm, and very well maintained

We spent only two nights there, and I regret not staying there from the beginning. The best hotel experience I ever had: the room at Ocean Wing has the best design, and the outdoor daybed and bathtub are amazing!! Rosslyn, Adrian and everyone at the resort were so friendly and helpful! Let me put it this way: if I ever return to Sabah, this hotel will be the main reason.

ocean wing room with balcony bathtub and ocean wing pool had lovely romantic views! and driver from airport was really patient (we made 3 pit stops lolol) firefly guide (unfortunately didn't get his name) was humorous, horse riding, jetski, atv, archery, banana boat guides and drivers were all so friendly and knowledgeable! saw an alligator, oyster farm and sea gypsies used lavender oil for sandflies at the beach, spf130 sunblock and basic insect repellant works. better to overpack than underpack because the weather is finnicky. scheduling and rescheduling activities would almost have been a headache if not for the patient staff. breakfast buffet at garden wing, lunch at ocean grill and drinks at garden wing bar was alright - ended up grabfooding from Abadi restaurant (right next to jetski area) twice! amazing crab, prawns and seafood. have to shoutout to room service dining - masala prawns was DELICIOUS! live music in the evening at garden wing bar was a thrill!

They have the best sunset, literally. Place wasn't crowded as its a private beach, and the place is very clean. Hotel is very well maintained, and you could use their washroom to clean your feet after coming out from the beach.

The perfect destination for a family getaway! The resort offers a great mix of indoor and outdoor activities to keep both kids and adults entertained throughout the stay. There’s no need to venture far for good food either—quality dining options are available within the hotel itself. Service is warm, attentive, and consistent, making the experience even more enjoyable. Rooms are clean, well-appointed, and comfortable, providing a relaxing space to unwind. For golf lovers, the on-site course is a real highlight—beautifully maintained and enjoyable to play. All in all, a fantastic resort that ticks all the boxes for a memorable family holiday.

Lovely hotel set in well maintained, beautiful grounds. Has private beach surrounded by forest on either side. Room has fridge, kettle, tea & coffee, TV, balcony, safe, iron & board, hairdryer, complementary water, large sofa, air conditioning & fan in room. Hotel has all facilities you would need including swimmimg pool, shop selling drinks, snacks & gifts. Hotel offers many activities. at reasonable prices. The hotel has several restaurants, a bar & coffee shop, these are quite expensive based on outside local prices. Breakfast buffet is amazing with lots of choice. Room service is available & they offer a reasonably priced laundry service. The staff are very helpful, polite & friendly.

This was my fifth time staying here. Upgraded my room to sea view and we got the room at the 6th floor. Since it is school holidays and it's the weekend, the resort had full occupancy. Check-in was a little bit slow but we were able to get our room right away. My children enjoyed the Adventure Point, the beach and the pool. Room service for in-room dining was very easy; scan QR code, choose the menu and submit online. The food is yummy! Masks, hand sanitiser, wet wipes are prepared for guests. There are many other activities provided at the resort but we didn't manage to enjoy it all. You should stay here at least for 2 nights to enjoy all of it. Great customer service too.

Mosque
Sights & Landmarks
Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu is a grand mosque with a stunning blue and gold dome, partially surrounded by a lagoon. It offers tours and is a highlight of city tours in Kota Kinabalu. The area also includes Signal Hill, State Government Building, Double Six Monument, Atkinson Tower, Jalan Gaya, and other attractions. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the tranquility of the sea and the liveliness of the city.
The Masjid Bandaraya Floating Mosque in Kota Kinabalu is an architectural marvel and a serene oasis amidst the bustling city. Located on a manmade lake, this stunning mosque seems to float on the water, creating a breathtaking sight, especially during sunset. The mosque's design combines modern and traditional elements, with sleek lines, expansive glass windows, and a blend of Malay and Islamic architectural influences. The interior is equally impressive, with intricate details and beautiful calligraphy adorning the walls. Visitors can take a stroll around the mosque's perimeter, admiring its unique architecture and tranquil surroundings. The mosque also offers boat rides, allowing visitors to appreciate its beauty from different angles. While the mosque is a popular tourist destination, it remains a sacred place of worship, and visitors are expected to dress modestly and show respect. Overall, the Masjid Bandaraya Floating Mosque is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in architecture, culture, and spirituality. Entrance Fee: RM5, Cloth Rental: RM5.

Our visit to the Floating Mosque in Kota Kinabalu was truly memorable. The mosque is beautifully surrounded by water, giving the impression that it is floating gracefully above the sea — an impressive sight even before stepping inside. Its architecture is stunning, and the serene setting makes it a peaceful place to visit. Inside, the design is just as captivating, with intricate details that reflect both beauty and spirituality. The guides were friendly and very knowledgeable, sharing fascinating insights about the mosque’s history, construction, and cultural significance. It was a wonderful family outing, and even the kids appreciated the calm and unique atmosphere. The combination of breathtaking views, interesting information, and warm hospitality made this visit well worth it. A must-see if you’re in KK.

Such a beautiful mosque in the heart of Kota Kinabalu. You can choose to explore either the inside or just admire it from the outside. I chose to stay outside since I wasn’t sure what to do inside a mosque. The heat was intense, and because the location is a bit far from the city center, it took longer than usual to hail a Grab or taxi. I had to look for shade while waiting. I stayed for about 5 to 10 minutes—just enough time to take a photo—then headed back.
Janu-Rey S — Google review
Very beautiful mosque. They will charge you only rm 5 for entrance but with clothes it will be rm 10.. very friendly and kind staff.
Ishari U — Google review
Beautiful mosque and very well worth the visit. It only cost 10 Ringgit or $2.38 US to enter which includes a rental of traditional clothing for both men and women. The mosque is quite small and very limited for exploration because they have a school in the mosque and the school area is restricted. Also some parts of the mosque is restricted to only worshippers.

Interesting visit, pay 10 MYR to go in to the mosque. This includes the Muslim clothing provided. The entry is to the none prayer areas.

🕌 Embracing Heritage and Culture at Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu Arrived around 5:20 PM via GrabCar, just in time to visit the outer grounds of Masjid Bandaraya before it closed at 6 PM. Entry for foreigners is RM5 (cash), with locals entering free by showing a Malaysian IC. Tickets are numbered and hole-punched, a clear sign that the process is properly tracked. Since we arrived late, we didn’t get to visit the main worship hall, which closes earlier and requires a separate ticket. Visitors may also be asked to wear a robe based on their attire, a small gesture that reflects deep respect for Islamic tradition. The staff were polite and informative, even pointed out Mount Kinabalu’s peak 🌄 and patiently explained how to identify it in the distance, a thoughtful touch that made the visit feel personal. 🧕🏽Pro tip: Wearing modest clothing may let you skip robe rental, but even if not, the fee is not a huge number, a small price to gain insight into Muslim customs and step into sacred space respectfully. Take it as a chance to learn, not just enter. Respect goes both ways. I spoke kindly and clearly, and was met with genuine warmth. If RM5 feels “too much,” maybe it’s not the mosque that needs questioning, but the attitude and mentality of our own.

Zoos & Aquariums
Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, situated near Kota Kinabalu, is a top destination for wildlife enthusiasts. The park, established in 2007 by the Sabah Wildlife Department, features a diverse range of Borneo's exotic animals such as tigers, bears, elephants, proboscis monkeys and more. Divided into botanical and zoological sections, it aims to be family-friendly with a focus on the Children's Zoo.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 Had a fantastic time at the wildlife zoo! The place is clean, well-organized, and perfect for a family outing. The monkeys were super fun to watch—full of energy and always up to something. The elephants were calm and majestic. One even gave us a little water show with its trunk! Loved the colorful parrots—they were chatting away and added so much life to the aviary. The tigers were stunning. Powerful, graceful, and just awe-inspiring to see up close. The deer were gentle and came close enough to feed—such a peaceful experience. You can tell the animals are well cared for, and the staff is friendly and informative. Highly recommend visiting if you're an animal lover or just looking for a great day out!
Mohamed F — Google review
We visited this zoo and were quite surprised – most of the animals don’t look very well, especially the tiger. He looked like he might be drugged or just very old. Honestly, we came here mainly to see the proboscis monkeys, and yes – they are here and they are amazing! I’m not sure if they just didn’t like us or if they’re not very friendly with people, but they didn’t come close. Still, we managed to take a few nice photos. As for the rest of the animals, there aren’t that many, so don’t expect to spend a full day here. You couldn’t anyway – the park is open from around 9:30 am to 1:00 pm, then it closes for lunch and reopens at 2:00 pm. We went in the afternoon. Getting a taxi back was a bit stressful – no one accepted our booking for more than 20 minutes, and since it’s over half an hour by car from Kota Kinabalu, we were worried we’d have to walk! So definitely have a backup plan for transport. The zoo itself is quite small and can be walked through slowly in about an hour. We spent another 30 minutes just sitting and watching the proboscis monkeys. Other animals you can see here include elephants, tigers, bears, different kinds of birds (parrots, toucans – I think – and owls), orangutans (though they were barely visible and not active at all), otters, ostriches, cows, and a few others. Entrance is 20 MYR per person for non-Malaysians. A taxi from Kota Kinabalu costs about 20–35 MYR one way. Overall, is it worth it? Yes – but only for the proboscis monkeys. They are the main highlight. Otherwise, there isn’t much to see, and sadly, many of the animals seem to be in poor condition, possibly because they’re old or not well cared for. On site, there’s a small snack shop with drinks and a souvenir store.
JOKER'S — Google review
Support your local zoo! ( As long it doesnt abuse the animal) But sadly yes some cage look sad and need to improve. We stumble upon elephant feeding time and it was a good experience to see elephant so near!. At the centre pavi there are small local stall people selling some food and drinks. This zoo really bring back the nostalgic feeling. Hoping there are public transport access to this zoo and there are more activities/festival so more people come to this zoo.
Syahir ( — Google review
For the price of RM10 for Malaysian Adult, I would certainly give a five stars. The animals are all healthy (Just that the space was a bit small for tiger). Can see around 30++ animals if not mistaken. The animal show at 11.15am was good too! Advise to get a higher seat. Be sure to arrive at 11.00am for goot seats.
Taryn O — Google review
I missed the animal show and it could possibly be the highlight of the visit for all I know. There are far too many run down buildings that need clearing and replacing. There is a good sized group of elephants which had two youngsters that I could see. Why are they viewed through bars rather than from a raised platform? Two were obviously bored to death in their enclosure and were just standing swinging their heads from side to side. If you want to see proboscis monkeys, elephants and orangutan there are better setting in Borneo otherwise you could try here. Entry cheap.
Derek H — Google review
Spent some time here with friends. I expected to see lots of animals, but there were only a few. Some of the animals weren’t very active and looked weak. There were also areas where the animals seemed lonely, with just one in a space by itself. I really hope the zoo management can make improvements and add more animals, because honestly, the place felt kinda dull and lifeless 😕. To be honest, I didn’t really enjoy or feel happy seeing the zoo in this condition.
Fateeha A — Google review
Our experience at the Wildlife Park in Kota Kinabalu was unfortunately quite disappointing. When we arrived, we were surprised to find it closed between 1 pm and 2 pm — something we hadn’t been aware of — and ended up waiting 45 minutes before we could enter. Once inside, it became clear that the park is small and poorly maintained. The walking paths were in bad condition, and many of the animal enclosures looked neglected, which took away from the enjoyment of the visit. On the positive side, we did get to see a few interesting animals, including the sun bear, elephants, and the famous proboscis monkey unique to the region. However, the overall state of the park made it hard to truly appreciate the experience. Unfortunately, the kids didn’t enjoy it much, mainly due to the lack of upkeep and the limited attractions. With better maintenance and care, this park could be so much more — but as it stands, it’s not a place we would rush to recommend.

Hi everyone! My sons (8 and 11) and I visited Lok Kawi Wildlife Park on Saturday afternoon. It took us about 25 minutes from Ming Garden Hotel, I used Grab. The entrance fee to the park is still RM20 for an adult, RM10 for a child. Despite the pouring rain, we had a great time! I would like to point out that the animals look very good! The binturongs, clouded leopard and tiger were sleeping peacefully in the afternoon, we got to the otters at the time when they are being fed, apparently the keeper was late, so the three otters swam up to EVERY visitor and "meowed" 🤣. The gibbon chose to hide in his house from the rain, so we only saw his beautiful tail 🤭 Sun bears, parrots, deer, elephants, proboscis monkey (endemic to Borneo) could not leave us indifferent! 💖 I recommend visiting Wildpark! Don't forget umbrellas or raincoats ☺️

I had a very wonderful experience during I ride this train. I can says back to 80's or 90's time. Where by most of the European use this train as transportation. The environment inside the train was cosy and calm. The train was clean and smelled nicely. The staff also very friendly and polite to their customer. Their also provide a good food. I try their Sabahan famous cakes called panjaram and drink with tea as breakfast. Was very nice and soft to eat. I prefer more to try their tradition cakes other than the usual food such as bread and more. The ticket price still affordable. Every time their stop at railway station. The technicion staff will checked the condition of the railway. So, the people inside will be more safe from danger. Beside, most of the people who visited that placed was very friendly and like to talk each other. I really comfortable with them. Futhermore, when the train stop at other station. You can spend your time to go shopping to nearest market. To prevent a wasting time. So, I recommend all of you to visit Sabah and try ride this train.

Amazing experience in Borneo. The steam train was magestic, roaming through countryside with children waving when it passed. The food served was good, way above my expectation. Only couple of trips available weekly so do book your tickets early. The price was reasonable for such a rare and nostalgic trip. Do note that the price already include the meals. Definitely a must in bucket list for those planning to visit Borneo.

Small and serene, Mamutik Island is a great spot to swim and snorkel. With clear water and plenty of coral, it's an ideal destination for scuba diving or snorkeling. The island is also close to Kota Kinabalu city, making it a convenient option for travelers.
I would still give it a 5/5 despite the negative comments. It’s actually not bad. The island is good. I did not see much litter but there are some in the middle of the ocean. Good spot for snorkeling, there are monitor lizards, and they have a decent restaurant. Would recommend this place.

Good snorkeling place, everything was clean. Not crowded beginning of may. We made 2 islands tour Manukan+Mamutik, it's enough for 1 day trip. You can take official boat tickets at the pier (what we did) or find someone next to the fish market.

My most favorite island near Kota Kinabalu when it comes to snorkeling. There are a lot of things to see there!
Зураб В — Google review
Nice little island. Not a lot going on here, just a couple of small beaches packed with tourists. The snorkeling was average as it was very shallow and all the coral was dead. Found a few plastic and glass bottles in the shallows too which was disappointing.
Jesse T — Google review
It's about 20 minutes on the bumpy boat ride from Jesselton. Once you get in, you'll pay for the park entrance fees. Bring cash. The waters around here have a lot of waves so if you are not a strong swimmer, please put on your life vest or you can be pulled out further. Not much corals here except near the rocks. You'll see some fishes here, more than those near the centre. You can hike up the trail as well which is nearer to the rocks, left side of the jetty. It is a small trail of maybe 1km up and back. Just watch out for the occasional snake and spider. There are open shower facilities here so bring your shampoo and soap and towel to clean the sea water off. The other side of the jetty is mostly Borneo divers facilities and only for their guests. Food at the common area is expensive and you should not expect much in taste. Bring your own if you want. Coconuts are Rm14 each and not cold.

The marine park in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia is home to Sapi, Manukan, and Mamutik islands. These small islands are only a 30-minute journey by speedboat from Jesselton point. The clear waters surrounding the islands provide abundant fish life and shaded picnic spots for visitors to enjoy. Many tourists come here for snorkeling, diving, and swimming opportunities. Sapi island has better coral than the others and offers great views of fish while snorkeling.
It is a very beautiful island but it can get a bit crowded. The water is clear for snorkeling and they do provide a lot of water activities. All in all a great experience and will recommend this island. There are some monkeys and huge monitor lizards too in this island so be aware.

The island was nice, clean, and clear water. They have a restaurant and a local shop to buy food and drinks. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed 1 hour early the day I went to the island. The beach area is a bit smaller than the surrounding islands. You can snorkel here and rent a clear bottom kayak if you want. There are lots of trees here to get some shade if it's sunny out. There is also a small covered roof at the jetty, for waiting for your boat to pick you up. Island was a bit busy when I was there.

I think this is one of the best island that I have been before. The sand is soft and the ocean is so clean. Really recommend for people that are planning to go for snorkelling.

Very beautiful little island with a couple of sandy beaches, clear water and shower facilities. However there are lifeguards who constantly patrol with loudspeakers ordering you out of the water if you don’t wear a life vest. If you want to have the privilege to swim normally, they make you sign a long waiver form. It’s all a bit ridiculous given the water isn’t even deep.

Manukan Island is a stunning destination located in the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, just a short ferry ride away from Kota Kinabalu. This picturesque island boasts a 1km white sand beach with clear waters, making it perfect for snorkeling and swimming. Visitors can also enjoy hiking and exploring the natural beauty of the island. The island offers various sea sports activities such as snorkeling and paragliding, as well as amenities like restaurants and cafes.
My visit to Manukan Island was truly unforgettable! The island is stunning, with soft white sand and crystal-clear blue waters. It’s the perfect tropical getaway for anyone looking to relax or enjoy water activities. One of the highlights of my trip was the jet ski ride—it was thrilling to speed across the beautiful open waters. Snorkeling was also an amazing experience, as the underwater world was full of vibrant marine life. The water was so clear that I could easily see colorful fish swimming around. Manukan Island is well-maintained and offers a great balance between relaxation and adventure. Whether you’re looking to lounge on the beach or try exciting water sports, this island is a must-visit. I had an incredible time and would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting the area!

Returning to Manukan Island after 15 years was a nostalgic experience. The island still offers crystal-clear waters, soft sandy beaches, and a peaceful escape from the city. It’s a great spot to unwind, whether for a quick day trip or a longer stay. However, some of the facilities could use an upgrade to match the island’s natural beauty. Better maintenance of public areas and improved amenities would enhance the visitor experience. That said, the charm of Manukan remains, with its stunning views and relaxing atmosphere making it worth a visit.

We visited here last weekend. Beautiful crystal clear water, soft sand, PLASTIC everywhere - in the ocean and on the sand. This was extremely disheartening to see. If you wish to snorkel with plastic bottles and bits of plastic, then I suggest you visit.
A I — Google review
Very very nice island it is so unfortunate that there is plastic and garbage in the beautiful south China sea very sad and they make you pay conservation like island conservation fee and before we pay that we said are you gonna do something about the plastic and the cleanup she said yes that’s something that happens and I’m like because it looks like the island has not been cleaned for many many years! The island is beautiful there’s a restaurant which charges an exorbitant rate for beer for half a pint it’s 35 ringgit !! that’s like over $12 Canadian for a half a pint absolutely outrageous! I would visit this island again but I would bring my own beer definitely and sit on the beach and drink ! It’s not that I don’t wanna support local businesses which I do but to charge that it would be almost $25 for a pint and I’m sorry but that is just a little bit way too much! We got here a little bit late in the afternoon and I went to go order food at this restaurant that I’m at and they ran out of food so there’s no food available until after five but that would be more for the people that are locally staying here like you can rent beach villas here I think? So not the beer was super expensive but they ran out of food 🥘 Anyway great island 🏝️ great news lots of trees in a jungle like setting ! Follow Fauzia for more amazing reviews in Borneo and beyond ! We had a lovely family trip here for a day, enjoying snokelling and the beach. However, the seabed was not as clean as expected and by afternoon it was crowded. A lovely area to escape from the city life. A short trip to the island by bot from Jesselton Point Jetty.

Visited Manukan Island during my trip to Sabah, and it was absolutely stunning. The clear turquoise waters, soft white sand, and gentle sea breeze made it feel like a tropical paradise. We swam, snorkeled, and relaxed by the beach—it was the perfect escape from city life. The island was clean and well-maintained, and the boat ride there added to the fun. If you’re looking for a peaceful yet exciting island getaway, Manukan is definitely worth it.

This place was amazing. The island is stunning, with soft white sand and crystal-clear blue waters. Very recommend doing snorkling here since there are various fishes. Never visit Kinabalu without coming here 🔥

Manukan Island in Sabah, Malaysia, is a hidden gem. For a reasonable RM35 boat fee and RM20 entrance fee, you can experience pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling, and lush greenery. The island offers various activities like snorkeling and diving, as well as a marine park. There are restaurants and small grocery stores, but prices are expected to be higher than on the mainland. For example, an RM1 bottled water would cost RM4 there, so it's better to pack your food before heading to the island. The atmosphere is peaceful, making it an ideal getaway from Kota Kinabalu's hustle and bustle. The facilities are pretty basic and sufficient for a day trip. Manukan Island is an excellent spot for nature lovers and those seeking relaxation.

Manukan Island is one of those places that keeps calling you back, and after a decade, I can confidently say it has only gotten better. The improvements over the years are evident, from better facilities to well-maintained beaches, but what remains unchanged is the island’s natural charm. If you’re planning an island-hopping adventure in Kota Kinabalu, Manukan Island is a must-visit stop—and for good reason. It’s usually one of the longer stays on the tour, giving you a couple of hours to soak in the beauty of this tropical paradise. The beaches here are pristine, with powdery sand and crystal-clear waters that make for perfect swimming and snorkeling conditions. One of the things I love most about Manukan is how it blends relaxation with a touch of adventure. Whether you want to lounge by the shore, take a dip, or explore the island’s vibrant marine life, there’s something for everyone. The wildlife here is also a treat—expect to spot colorful fish, playful monitor lizards, and even hornbills if you’re lucky. Overall, Manukan Island isn’t just a stopover; it’s an experience. Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, it never fails to impress. If you’re in Kota Kinabalu, make sure to set aside time for this gem—you won’t regret it.

A great place to come for healing with family or friends — dining facilities are available, and the island itself is beautiful.

Very clean and beautiful place. Just boat service needs to be more organized. Our experience: We visited Manukan (crystal clear water), Sapi (beautiful but not as much as Manukan) and Gaya (Patang Point). In this last island there are hiking trails. In Sapi we rent a Mask and snorkel for RM10 and enjoyed the corals and fish.

Amazing that they charge a conservation fee, when the water is dirty and full of rubbish. Not good for snorkelling as the coral is very shallow (and mostly dead) so cannot be accessed a lot of the time, although I respect them trying to restrict people, as I’m sure they would stand on and damage it further.

A lot of fun activities; paragliding, undersea walk, Island hopping, snorkelling, banana boat ride and etc.

Unfortunately the hiking routes on the Manukan Island are impassable (overgrown vegetation). The southwest tip of the island is full of garbage. I think the conservation fee (25 RM/person) is unreasonably high.

Great place to visit islands and these islands just located near to town. Great way to feel the breeze and nature scene. Recommended.

Superb well maintained natural park with clean white sand beaches, lush forrest and excellent coral and crystal clear waters for snorkelling and scuba diving. Visited in January 2004 on a scuba diving trip with Boreno Divers
