Canakkale Martyrs Monument

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Huge seaside arch commemorating soldiers who participated in the Battle of Gallipoli during WWI.
Impressive and powerful monument. We sailed past it and it could be seen from miles offshore. A fitting and yet small monument in comparison to the width, breadth and weight of the Gallipoli campaign.
A C — Google review
This monument was built in memory of the Turkish soldiers who were martyred in Çanakkale. You can also see the tombstones here to commemorate the soldiers and the names of the soldiers and the places they were born are written on the stones.
Baran A — Google review
Amazing - The spectacular “Turkish Çanakkale Martyrs Memorial” overlooks Morto Bay and the Straits of the Dardanelles. It was very impressive (it is sort of like the Canberra War Memorial). Very moving.
Norm P — Google review
Impressive Architecture and National Pride. A towering and well-designed memorial that dominates and peninsula, visible from miles away over the Dardanelles. It perfectly honors the estimated 253,000 Turkish soldiers who fell here.
Kaphao N — Google review
Visiting Canakkale and Gallipoli is an unforgettable and emotional experience. The atmosphere here is filled with deep respect, sorrow, and pride. Standing among the memorials and cemeteries, you can truly feel the weight of history and the shared humanity that emerged from such a tragic war. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s words to the mothers of the Anzac soldiers in 1934 perfectly capture the spirit of peace and reconciliation that defines this sacred place: “Heroes who shed their blood on the soil of this country! You are here in the soil of a friendly homeland. Rest in peace and tranquility. You are side by side with our soldiers. Mothers who sent their sons to war from distant lands! Dry your tears. Your sons are in our bosom, in peace, and they will sleep soundly. After giving their lives on this land, they have become our sons.” These words reflect Atatürk’s extraordinary compassion and vision — a leader who, even after fierce battle, could speak of love, unity, and shared humanity. Gallipoli is not just a battlefield; it is a symbol of peace, respect, and eternal remembrance. Visiting here reminds us that bravery, sacrifice, and reconciliation can transcend borders and generations.
Olcay D — Google review
When you decide to visit Canakkale you must add this place to your trip. Monuments and graveyards are really important for every turk while you trip you have to be respectful that

A massive monument to the Turkish soldiers who fought and died fighting the Anzacs, British and French.
Cheryl H — Google review
The Çanakkale Martyrs’ Monument (Çanakkale Şehitler Anıtı) stands as a powerful and emotional tribute to the Turkish soldiers who lost their lives during the Gallipoli Campaign (1915) in World War I. Here's a brief on its touching meaning: 1. Symbol of Sacrifice: The monument honors the immense bravery and sacrifice of the Turkish soldiers who defended their homeland against a larger and better-equipped Allied force. Many of these soldiers were very young—some just teenagers. 2. National Unity and Resilience: The monument represents the unity of the Turkish people from all regions who came together during a critical moment in history. It marks a defining point in the Turkish national consciousness. 3. Legacy of Peace: Despite being a site of immense bloodshed, Gallipoli is also remembered for the mutual respect between enemies. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s words to the mothers of fallen foreign soldiers (“You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country…”) show deep humanity and have become an enduring message of reconciliation. 4. Emotional Impact: The size, design, and solemnity of the monument evoke a strong emotional response in visitors—reminding them of the cost of war and the value of peace and freedom. Would you like a poetic reflection or a visual description of the monument as well?

Ancient City of Troy

Mentioned on
6 lists
Historical place
Sights & Landmarks
The Ancient City of Troy is a significant historical site, known for its scattered stone ruins and a replica Trojan horse. It offers visitors an immersive experience, complete with informative displays that provide insight into the city's history and period. The surroundings are tranquil, with cheerful birdsong and playful squirrels adding to the ambiance. The ancient stones that make up the ruins are an impressive sight and should not be missed by anyone in the area.
Modern museum well worth visiting to understand context of history, archeology, and many artefacts (others in Istanbul museum). Site itself has well signed walkways and information boards, though hard to grasp the differing levels and which parts were extant together - so second visit to museum would be good if with own transport. Site has cafe, but take water and hat for open walks. Good view of coast which has receded significantly since city founded.
Jeff S — Google review
This UNESCO world heritage archaeological site is open to public and is setting for Greek mythology of the Trojan war. Excavation started in 1871 and you can see lot of ruins. If lucky you can see archaeological work in progress at sections of the site. Boardwalk access everywhere so makes walking easier but you need hat, sunscreen and comfy walk shoes. Have to pay fee to enter. At entrance there is replica of Trojan Horse. Local village goat seen wandering about ruins
S V — Google review
Little remains of the actual buildings, but the historical and cultural significance of the location as well as the events that took place around it make up for the lack of structural integrity. Perhaps the most impressive is the entrance ramp which has been preserved in astonishingly solid shape. Also, for this who read and adore the Illiad, one can literally sense the spirit of the ancient battles amidst the ruins. With a hit of imagination, you can picture Agamemnon's army spread out across the surrounding plain as they plan and wage the attack on Troy.
Muris D — Google review
I enjoyed Troy - but I only recommend going if you have an interest in the history and myths of Troy. The archaeological site itself is not the most impressive I’ve seen and it costs €27. It also does not take very long to explore. An hour is enough. For anyone trying to get the public mini bus there - as of writing this it goes from under the bridge if you search Troy Dolmus on google maps. It costs 100 lira and took about 45 minutes each way.
Martha M — Google review
It was an honour to visit such an agent and historic place of a people and culture from so long ago. I really wished there were more bi-lingual translations of the text surrounding the site. Also better sign posting as I’m more of a visual person it was hard to see which versions of the city were specific to the corners of the site that we walked. The Trojan horse it self looked very commercial and ‘overly designed’ considering it was placed in the enter square of the old city.
Trishoya G — Google review
Was quite cool. But… if you been to Roma. It’s a bit cliche. But this is 3000 BC. Still worth to go if you are not tired of 11+ hours same stay drive in the car. So simple high meat Shell gasoline test area foods. Not for foodies!
Derek S — Google review
Where myth whispers through the wind — Troy, the city of nine lives. Each layer beneath my feet tells a story: the earliest settlers of 3000 BCE, the rise and fall of kingdoms, the fire and rebuilding of Troy VI and VII, and finally, the Roman Troy IX in 1st century A.D., when the city was reborn in marble and empire’s glory. Here, time folds into legend — the same ground that stirred Homer’s imagination as he sang of Achilles’ rage, Hector’s courage, and the fate sealed by a wooden horse. The ruins stand silent, yet the echoes of the Iliad still ride the breeze from Çanakkale’s shores. It’s a humbling walk through millennia — from myth to memory, from poetry to stone. #Troy #Çanakkale #Homer #Iliad #AncientTroy #RomanTroy #HistoryAndMyth #TurkeyTravel

Another historical place in western Turkey. Walk through the ruins of this well known ancient city. You can barely imagine how it should have looked in the past times. In the far you can see the Dardanelles and can imagine the tale of Homers Iliad. Of course you will find the troyan horse. There is another horse in Canakkale, which is the original requisite from the movie 'Troy'.

Molivos Castle Apartments

Castles
Molivos Castle is a peaceful apartment hotel that provides modest units with kitchenettes and sea-facing balconies. The property's outdoor pool, which boasts stunning views, is one of its most impressive features. However, guests should be aware that if an event such as a wedding party takes place on-site, the noise level may make it difficult to relax fully. Breakfast is often accompanied by insects such as wasps due to the hotel's location.
We had a wonderful time at Molivos Castle Apartments. We liked everything. The apartments and the area are clean and well-kept. The staff is polite and friendly. There is a car park on the territory, several swimming pools, including a children's one. The bar serves delicious coffee. The distinctive feature is the stunning view of the sea and mountains.

The view and the infinity pool is fabulous. We stayed at a studio room with spacious two bedrooms and a balcony with a fantastic view. The room was equipped with all kinds of appliances, great for long stays and families. The breakfast and food menu is quite diverse and affordable. The staff is friendly and helpful. My only complaint is the bathroom of the super large room which was tiny and shower door was broken. But overall a minute detail and this place is absolutely worth the price.
Gizem U — Google review
Great hotel with an amazing view to the sunset! The studios are spacious with separate bedroom and adequately equipped for preparing breakfast - although you can order breakfast and enjoy it by the infinity pool. The balcony is large and enjoys panoramic views as well. The location just between Petra and Molyvos is ideal for exploring the north of the island (a car is needed, obviously)
Claire T — Google review
Perfect view, lovely infinity pool, very nice house to stay. You feel like you are at home. Lovely lady at the reception. And you may eat and drink near the pool with good prices and there were many options. We loved this stay soooo much
Rüyam K — Google review
We had an amazing experience at Molivos Castle Apartments. The rooms are spotless, spacious, and very comfortable, more like fully equipped apartments with a kitchen than just hotel rooms. The location is perfect: right between Molyvos and Petra (only 3–4 minutes each way), making it easy to reach both the beaches and the town, yet the property itself is very quiet and peaceful. There’s a pool on-site where you can relax, swim, and enjoy drinks during the day. The hotel also serves food and coffee, which is very convenient and fairly priced. Parking is plentiful, so arriving and leaving by car was hassle-free. The host was very friendly, responsive, and helpful throughout our stay. The real highlight is the view..absolutely stunning, especially at sunset, which you can enjoy right from your balcony. The atmosphere is truly magical. Overall, it’s excellent value for money. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to explore the west/ northwest part of Lesvos.
Christina P — Google review
The owners were super friendly, the rooms are spacious and nice, the view is amazing the only issue there is a really steep slope to enter the hotel.
Lara D — Google review
First of all, if you booked “Villa Molyvos Castle” (not “Molivos Castle Apartments”), be aware that the complex has two separate entrances: one for the villas and one for the apartments. We didn’t realize this and first arrived at the apartments, where there was no receptionist. A sign directed us to the opposite cliff, so we had to drive back to the main road before finally finding the correct path to the villas. It would really help if management listed the villa location separately on maps to avoid this confusion. I’ll attach a screenshot to my review for future guests. That said, the location and the view from the villas are absolutely stunning, and the staff were polite and respectful. However, the rooms could use better upkeep: they were a bit dirty, some facilities were old, the shower drain was clogged, one electrical outlet was loose, and we saw a lot of bugs. The air conditioners were also not very effective, though there was one unit in the bedroom and another in the living room.
Mert A — Google review
This is a 5-minute drive from Molivosos, but an hour from the center of Lesbos, where you get off the ferry. The hotel is comfortable, the owners are a family, and very attentive. Plan your plans accordingly. First, go to Lidl supermarket and do your shopping, then you can visit Mandamados and Skala on the way.

A place to worship and ponder, a holy place. Went today to pray with my wife and I feel so blessed to be able to get up there. A year and a few days ago have gone by, since the double back fusion surgery, and had no pain or concerns walking up the stairs. She (Virgin Mary) has guided my steps back to this holy place, 34 years after the last time I prayed here and I know she is protecting my steps everyday. Faith is everything!

The church of the sweet kiss enchants you. The stairs are easy to climb. A great little cliché. The view is perfect

One of the places in Lesvos that I believe should definitely be visited is the village of Petra; with its narrow streets, seaside charm, and lively atmosphere, it is truly a delightful stop. At the center of the village, the Holy Church of the Virgin Mary Glykophilousa, built on top of a massive rock, offers a fascinating experience with both its view and atmosphere.
Cihan E — Google review
Simply beautiful. You get a view of the whole town plus visit a blessed, timeless Greek Orthodox Church. NOTE....you have to WALK UP. Park the car in the local car park. NO CARS go up or near. Lovely walk via the town shops.
Thomay K — Google review
Such a peaceful place, didn't enter the church. Sat outside, relaxed, listened to the birds and appreciated the view. Fantastic place to see the sunset
Phil W — Google review
Spectacular church perched on top of a rock formation in the city of Petra. Climbing from the steps carved out of rocks will give you a hint how difficult it was to construct this magnifient church. The views from the top is breathtaking overlooking the city and the Aegean sea. The grounds are meticulously kept with flowers everywhere. The inside is also lavishly decorated with iconas adorning the walls. It's a must visit if you are in Petra.

A lot of steps but they are easy to climb up. Great view from atop. Enter the orthodox Church and light a candle putting some change in the box. May God bless you.

Behram, also known as Assos, is an ancient Greek city situated near the modern-day Behramkale. This historical site is often still referred to by its original name of Assos. Sights & Landmarks
Athena Tapınağı, also known as the Temple of Athena, is a must-visit historical site located in Assos, Turkey. Situated on the acropolis 238 meters above sea level, this ancient Doric order temple dates back to 530 BC and was dedicated to Athena. The remains of six original columns can still be seen today. Behramkale village, where the temple is located, is an old Ottoman Empire village with only 150 houses built inside ancient walls.
The Assos Athena Temple is an iconic structure located in the ancient city of Assos, within the Behramkale Village in Çanakkale, Turkey. Built in the 6th century BCE, it stands on the acropolis of Assos at 235 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and the nearby island of Lesbos. The temple is significant as the only example of Doric-style architecture from the Archaic period in Anatolia. Dedicated to the goddess Athena, the temple was central to the city’s spiritual life and symbolizes wisdom and protection. It originally featured 34 columns and housed a statue of Athena, though much of its original structure is now in ruins due to time and looting. Archaeological excavations in Assos began in the 19th century and continue today, preserving its historical essence. The temple’s location and its stunning sunset views make it a popular destination for history enthusiasts and photographers alike.

We came to Assos just to see this temple. Really worth it for the view and the vibes. We spent an hour walking around. You can go down to the rest of the ancient city from here. Wear proper shoes because of cobblestones.

Another lovely historic place. Its pretty high so if you don't have a car, you better be prepared for a walk. When you get to the top, you will be amazed by the view. You can see ocean and land together. If you come to Assos, don't skip here. Especially if you like watching views.
Arda E — Google review
8 years later, I had the opportunity to see this magnificent temple for the second time. Like the first time, I was enchanted by its history and beauty, it is a must-see place. If you are coming by car, there is a parking lot at the entrance of the hill. As soon as you get out of the vehicle, the attendant comes to you and asks for 20 TL. To reach the temple, you have to climb the hill for 15-20 minutes. My advice is to drink a glass of black mulberry(Karadut) juice at the beginning of the road, because you will need energy. When you see the Single Domed Mosque with White Minaret, take a deep breath, you are almost there. If you have a museum card, you can pass the turnstiles without waiting in line. Otherwise, the entrance is 50 TL. There were 5-10 people in line when I went. The Temple of Athena is the first stop of the ancient Ruins. You can go to the Theater, Agora and other structures on the pathway after passing the turnstiles. But I must warn, the road is very long and hilly. Have a nice trip 🤞🏻
Mert A — Google review
Getting here From Çanakkale go to the Canakkale otogar Look for the Ayvacık/assos bus (60TL) Stop in Ayvacık Take the next bus to Assos (25TL) Bus stops at the bottom of the hill, walk up to the entrance. Takes about 1.5hr total. Expect to spend at least 3 hours on site, there's lots of ground to cover. Enter from the top, exit at the bottom (unless you want to hike all the way back up). No toilets on site, use the one at the beginning of town. The view from this temple is absolutely breathtaking. This is a must visit if you're in Turkey.

Amazing place to visit, soaked with ancient history. The view from the mountain is simply spectacular. One thing to keep in mind is that you have to climb quite a lot to get there. There are places with quite cheap souvenirs all the way up to the entrance of the museum. Wondeful experience.

The ice cream ball was 25 TL and the cunda was usually 20 TL. It's a shame, I can't understand how expensive this snow is. I think they are taking advantage of the opportunity. The village has its own beauty, but unfortunately it has now fallen into the hands of rich Istanbulites. In conversations with local tradesmen, he states that everyone is selling their land.

(Translated by Google) The atmosphere was very nice, but we ordered the herb cheese pancake. Unfortunately, it only contained spinach and cheese as seen in the photo. Unfortunately, none of the beautiful grasses of the Aegean were available. As for the manlama, the minced meat mixture and top sauce were incredibly light, and there was no trace of butter. For this reason I do not recommend it.

Thermes Gera Hot Springs

Spas & Wellness
Thermes Gera Hot Springs is a popular spot in Lesvos offering a relaxing experience with its hot springs overlooking the Bay of Geras. It's recommended to visit at the beginning or end of the season to avoid crowds, especially in peak months. While drinks can be pricey and extras like slippers may come at an additional cost, the stunning views and peaceful atmosphere make it worth planning ahead.
This thermal spa is amazing. €8 per person for the bath, and €20 for 30 minute massage with Salti. The dimly lit room with the bath is fantastic, with relaxing music playing is a truly relaxing treat. Both my husband and I shared the bath, which was lovely and warm, not too hot. Floating around in there is very womb like and relaxing. We chose a 30 minute massage and it was incredible, really pulled out the toxins and worked on our tired muscles. They do lots of other treatments, offer food and drinks too. They also have an outdoor jacuzzi and infinity pool with fabulous views over the bay of Gera. I recommend their services highly and can't thank them enough for such a tranquil and relaxing experience.

I only went in the outside pool. The water was very hot but soothing, although I did have to take breaks and get out once in a while because I felt like I was sweating. For the pool it's 5€ per person for 1 hour. The whole place was very neat and tidy, very relaxing atmosphere. I felt very safe because there were mostly women around.

My visit to Therma Spa in Gera Bay was unforgettable. Nestled among olive groves with sweeping views of the Gulf, the site blends historic charm with modern comfort. I soaked in the beautifully vaulted Ottoman pools, where warm 39–40 °C mineral-rich water streamed from marble spouts, giving a gentle hydromassage. Whether I opted for the communal gender-segregated pool or enjoyed a private jacuzzi, the experience left me deeply relaxed. The on-site cafe and the access to a pebble beach made the day even more special.
Dr. K — Google review
Great find just on the outskirts of Mytellini...very friendly and warm welcome, stunning views of the Gulf. We opted for the indoor thermal baths which are private and then some time lounging on the terrace before lunch. Other options include separate male/female thermal baths (shared) and outdoor thermal infinity pool or jacuzzis...very good value for money and a bit of la dolce vita in Lesvos.

This place, to me was the highlight of our trip to Lesbos. It almost feels too good to be true. It is a thermal spa with some facilities, like a thermal infinity pool looking to the sea, sauna, private baths and a beach. We used the outside pool and the beach. The area is well maintained and well-looking, but the price is extremely affordable, to use the outside pool its 5 euros per person for 1 hour. The beach is free. We also paid 5 euros for 2 frappes. We went in June, so pretty much in for the holiday season of Lesbos. The place was very quiet and not crowded at all. I would 100% recommend this place for a spa relaxation time. We went when it was not crowded, but you still might need a reservation for the areas.

Really nice view and service. Relaxing massage - good price and was really relaxing, but masseuses wasn't 100% profesional, more like straight after course. Still i recommend for a day of relax ;)
Łukasz W — Google review
Dont make a mistake and never go on a sunny day. The place is burning 🔥. The sea is the inside sea, and all the thermal water goes to the beach so it is freaking hot! And 2 stars for the greedy boss. We paid for entry, while going the pool the kid wanted to touch the jakuzi, only touch! A lady came yelling and that we have to pay for jakuzi too. We paid for the entrance and for the massage already but has been told to pay extra for the jakuzi (which is a small one) and the closed hot water part. So didnt like. 2 stars for the ambiance only

Scenic spot
Sights & Landmarks
Historic Walking Areas
Hilltop observation deck overlooking Lesbos & other Aegean Islands, popular for sunset viewing.
After reading some reviews we nearly didn't go but then decided we should and so glad we did so, it has the most amazing views, if you are around Ayvalik it is a must! If you are going there speacially for the sunset would recommend going early and grabbing a table. It has free parking and free toilets however entrance to restraunts/view point area is not free. It is 100TL each.
Sevilay I — Google review
Everyone needs to pay 100 tl for entering the place. If you want to order a refreshment you need to pay 150 tl for a lemonade, 40 tl for a Turkish tea. Prices are high for the locals.
Filiz P — Google review
Absolutely ridiculous experience. This place has nothing to do with hospitality — they simply don’t care how you feel. Avoid eating here if you don’t want to risk food poisoning. We went as a large family on a trip and had to raise a complaint as soon as the food arrived. The food was cold, and the meat was undercooked. It was completely unacceptable. They are nothing but scammers. Do not go! They charge an entrance fee plus overpriced, low-quality food. When we complained, the only response we received was: “Don’t come here again.” Terrible service, awful food, and absolutely no respect for customers. Stay away.

Two stars just for beautiful sunset, too crowded, cars squeezed past each other, the prise on the entrance is 100tl. Too crowded to enjoy. I add the photo, this is the road, not the parking place itself.

Great view of the city! However the nature and the terrace was occupied by a private company charging a good bit of price to see the nature that was created by God ! This is robbery and I am not sure who is responsible for this thievery !

Şeytan Sofrası is a stunning spot offering breathtaking views, perfect for photography and capturing unforgettable moments. The panoramic scenery from this viewpoint is truly mesmerizing and makes every visit special. It’s a great destination for families: children under 12 can enter for free, while adults pay around 100 TRY to enjoy this incredible location. There’s also a cozy café on-site serving refreshing drinks. Their lemonade and fresh mulberry juice are especially popular, and mixing the two creates an amazing flavor experience. The site offers convenient parking, making access easy and stress-free. The area is clean, well-maintained, and features walking paths for those who want to explore nature up close. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, stunning photo opportunities, or a fun family outing, Şeytan Sofrası is an ideal choice. A combination of beautiful scenery, peaceful surroundings, and delicious drinks makes this place a must-visit spot that’s worth every moment.

Beach
Outdoor Activities
Laid-back stretch of sand with calm, shallow water, umbrella rentals & facilities like showers.
Very nice beach! Loved it. It is always windy, so one will never get to sweat much from the high temperatures. Also, that's why there are no mosquitos in that area. The water is always quite cold, which provides a great fresh-up in summer. The water is clear, and there were no dangerous fishes or animals in or out of the sea. Very recommended beach.

A beautiful an secluded beach if you go on the dirt road towards the end of the peninsula. Beautiful rock formations. Please protect the nature from fire and littering
Iva I — Google review
Beautiful still clear water. Simply amazing. Can walk out for a good while. No rocks on entry.
Nidal K — Google review
The beach itself is magnificent. The stones beneath were slightly mossy but they weren't slippery at all. When there weren't stones it was mostly sand. I should note that it was still extremely cold even though we went slightly after noon when it was more than 40 degrees C. However I would DEFINITELY not recommend going here within the next several months. It has extremely serious fly issues. There were flies all around and they bite NONSTOP. We were sitting there for like 3 minutes and already 5-6 flies had bit us. When we were going to the beach some people warned us "there are a lot of flies near the stone mines, please don't go there" and we dismissed it as we were going reasonably far away from the stone mines. But nope. They were everywhere, even in the middle of the sea. We literally had to run to our cars and they followed us into the cars. I'm not even exaggerating. The beach itself is magnificent, but THE FLIES ARE NOT.

Big beach, nice water sand, many food places, difficult to park
Mihail M — Google review
Clean and shallow sea like a swimming pool at all times. Great for the kids as they could go swimming and playing in the sea on their own since it is very shallow for about 100 meters. The down side of the beach is that almost all umbrellas in all of the facilities are made of wattling and they do not really block the sun. Secondly, the showers are scarce in the whole of the beach so during the high season, there is bound to be a queue. It is a great place for swimming but the facilities need to improve a lot.

Tahtakuşlar Etnografya Galerisi

Ethnographic museum

Specialty Museums
Nestled in the Kazdaglari region, Tahtakuşlar Etnografya Galerisi is a charming private ethnographic museum that offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich tapestry of Turkish nomadic culture. This small yet authentic gallery showcases an impressive collection of textiles, tools, and personal artifacts from local tribes, highlighting the village's history and traditions. Visitors can also explore intriguing items from around the globe that draw connections to shamanic practices among various indigenous communities.
This Ethnography Gallery was amazing! The village is one of the last shaman places in Turkey. The Museum hast many things from other countries and shows as well some historical and traditional items of the previous shaman people. I highly recommend it for all who are interested in such stuff!

It could be much better. There are interesting items but they are not presented very well and it has a feeling of neglect. If you are nearby it is worth a stop. Nothing is in English. Entrance fee is 4tl and 2tl for students. There is parking.
Tammie Y — Google review
Nice small museum with various things. Not very ordered though. And there is no air conditioning so you cant spend too much time inside. Entry price is fair.
Aykut K — Google review
Very interesting place, definitely worth visiting. The biggest exhibition is related to the village, it's history and tradition and includes a collection of clothing, tools, and personal items. The other part contains a collection of items from different parts of the world. The link is being made between "shamanic" traditions of different indigenous communities across the globe.
Anna — Google review
Great ethnography museum considering it is very small and authentic, funded by some citizens. Interesting details about Turkish shamanism, a few stuffed animals including an almost 2m long sea turtle, antiquities given by locals are some valuable points to talk. Only 2 TL (40 cents) entry fee. If you are in the Kazdaglari area, it is a good idea to spend an hour for this place.

Yeni Mosque

Yeni Mosque, located in Mytilene, is a significant historical site and the largest mosque in the area. It was built to replace an older mosque that was destroyed in an earthquake in 1867. Although it has not been restored and appears as a beautiful ruin, it remains an intriguing place for history enthusiasts to explore. Situated along a shopping street, this mosque offers visitors a unique glimpse into the past and is definitely worth a visit for those interested in history and architecture.
Beautiful location. Unfortunately, it is not open for visitors.

This mosque has historical value, but is very neglected. We did not get inside on Saturday, but there is nothing to see there, from the street you can see most of the facades and the courtyard. It would be incredibly cool if this mosque were restored!

Kazdağı Milli Parkı

National park
Nature & Parks
National park with a varied selection of lush valleys, hot springs & impressive mountain scenery.
One of the most beautiful Natural reserves of Anatolian Peninsula. It is situated in northern part of Aegean Sea in Balikesir Province and near this place there are some really important ancient towns such as Assos, Troia and Pergamon. There is so many historical stories and legends about this area and mountain. It used to be called in ancient era as Ida Mount and the first beauty contest had been held on this mountain. Paris should have decided the winner of the beauty contest among Hera, Afrodit and Athena. Poor Paris!
Deilgin D — Google review
Unfortunately all the sightseeing was closed due to a fire and you could only go to the camping. So we didn't energije the park. Nice area anyway, you see some old villages
Iztok L — Google review
We got all the way there, but they wouldn't let us in without paying for a guide that didn't speak English! Only the Turkish citizens can enter without a guide as if they can't get lost in the park without a guide. I refused to pay for a guide, just to go on a simple walk. Very disappointed. Be aware of this rule if you plan to go there.
Mark L — Google review
You should really take seriously foreign tourists and provide information in english. We paid the entrance fee, noone could speak english to inform us about anything and finally there was nothing that we could do inside the park. If we wanted to proceed we should pay about 1000 tl extra, to a guide that could hardly say two words in english to communicate. We decided to walk in the forest for a while but then a car came with two persons, employees of the park I guess, that were quite angry; they tried to explain to us that we should leave because hiking/walking is not allowed during the fire season. (In the meantime people are lighting fires for barbecue all over the mountain!!!). Anyway, this is a respectable rule but really, we should be able to know it in advance, before we pay for the entrance. Please put signs in english!

Ege C — Google review
Kazdağları is lucky part of the nature that is not ruined by concrete city life. I was astonished to see the power of baby pine trees that is growing out of the rocks. I listened out the nature for minutes in silence there was no sounds of cars but just naughty insects chanting away. Despite the fear of concrete monster capturing this beautiful nature a sensible, controlled investment needed to improve roads and some service areas.

Cute restaurant with reasonable prices next to or overlooking the waterfall. Plenty of parking. Restrooms in the restaurant. We came in with a large group in a minibus and there was no problem parking. Entrance fee for the minibus was 50TL. We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed with people, but it really wasn't a problem. Possibly more enjoyable on a weekday. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with mobility problems. We had 2, 8 year olds, a 6 year old and our friend brought their 9 month old. Not stroller friendly but we were all able to make it to the first and second waterfalls. Although it was slow going. We enjoyed our time very much. I would recommend it to all nature lovers who are looking for a calm day out in nature.

The Asclepieion of Pergamon, located in Bergama, is a significant historical site dating back to the 4th century BC. This ancient complex was dedicated to Asclepius, the god of health, and served as a place of healing centered around natural springs. The main complex features circular architecture with interconnected passages and tunnels, along with a partially restored theater and stoa. Visitors can also enjoy stunning views of the hilltop Pergamon site from this location.

Healing Sanctuary of the Ancient World / The Asclepieion of Pergamon was not only a center for physical healing, but also a symbolic heart of ancient Greco-Roman medical science. Founded in the 4th century BC and flourishing during the Roman period, it was one of the three most famous healing temples of antiquity, alongside Epidaurus and Kos. It functioned as a sacred place where medicine, religion, and ritual came together in harmony. Patients would undergo purification rituals, offer sacrifices, and enter the temple through a long sacred way. Inside, treatments included dream interpretation, the use of medicinal herbs, hydrotherapy, mud baths, and even sound therapy using music and theater. The sacred spring was believed to have healing powers, and the underground tunnel—used to guide patients from the entrance to the heart of the sanctuary—symbolized a spiritual transition. When we visited the site, we were truly amazed by the scale of the sanctuary, especially the tunnel and the sacred water area. Even though centuries have passed, the infrastructure was still impressive. The massive columns, the length of the healing tunnel, and the well-preserved water systems reflected how advanced and well-planned this place was. It made us appreciate how seriously healing and human well-being were taken in the ancient world. #AsclepieionOfPergamon #AncientHealing #GalenLegacy #SacredSpring #AncientTunnel #PergamonHistory

The Acropolis Lower Cableway Station offers a convenient mode of transportation to reach the Acropolis. However, if you wish to visit the museum located upstairs, an additional fee is required. Alternatively, you can choose not to go up and explore the area around the station instead. During such exploration, you may have the opportunity to interact with local vendors like Elif who sells delightful wild honey.
A good way to access the akropolis and then walk down. One-way ticket for foreign tourists is 400 TL, the price is steep but so it's the hill. At the top station there are shops for souvenirs and refreshments. One vendor even has frozen water bottles.
Bob C — Google review
They charge L500 each per return trip or L350 for a one way 3 minute ride. And that’s before paying to enter the Akropolis site. So we walked up (45 min) and down again through the additional places of interest for L0. You’re better to drive, walk or get a taxi.
Stephen H — Google review
There is a cable car which takes you to the Acropolis but upstairs you need to pay extra to see the museum. I honestly didnt go up. I stayed down and bonded with a local lady named Elif who was selling the most delicious wild honey so I bought two jars and we just talked.
Diana A — Google review
If you have a car you're better off driving up, same views and you don't have to pay to park at the gondola and then also pay for the gondola itself. There isn't even a parking lot, what are you charging for?
Joshua H — Google review
Best way to go up. Buy the Aegean Museum Card is cheaper to visit all the sites Permagon, Red Basilica, Asklepion, Permagon Museum and mach more.
Constantin S — Google review
Cozy and enjoyable way to reach the Acropolis. However 20 TL is expensive I think.
Faruk Y — Google review
Now one way price is even 500 TL.

I suffer from vertigo but it was the main way to visit the site. Professional service though

Rahmi M. Koç Museum

Technology museum
Museums
Specialty Museums
Museum on transportation, industry & communications with a car collection & some hands-on exhibits.
This museum was a real surprise for us we honestly didn’t expect to find something of this caliber in Turkey. At first, we thought it would just be a collection of classic cars, but it turned out to be so much more. It’s really an engineering and technology museum, with clear explanations of how cars, machines, and even everyday household items work. The variety is incredible from vintage vehicles to trains, submarines, aircraft, and more. You can even step inside some of the trains, buses, and exhibits, which makes the experience so interactive and engaging. It’s suitable for all ages: -Kids love it because they get to see and explore so many things up close. -Adults enjoy it just as much, with fascinating displays that spark genuine interest. The whole project feels like an amazing and generous contribution from Mr. Rahmi Koç everything is top quality, thoughtfully curated, and well maintained. Truly an outstanding museum, both fun and educational, and absolutely deserving of five stars.

Fascinating museum with tonnes of history. Each piece has its own story. I believe the museum has been going for over 30 years now. Huge variety and everything is in such good condition for its age. Amazing to see a WW2 bomber wreck that landed in the Turkey sea.
David L — Google review
I paid just over £9 for entry with student discount from UK and it was definitely worth it. Saw some cars I’ve never seen before, lots of cool steam engines, ICE engines, boats, planes, trains, trams, appliances, machines, models etc. You could easily spend half a day there it’s a huge place with so much to see
Fab C — Google review
I visited the Rahmi Koç Museum yesterday and was truly amazed by the experience. The museum offers a fascinating journey through the history of transportation, industry, and technology, with an impressive collection of vintage cars, trains, and nteractive exhibits. Every corner is thoughtfully curated, and there's something engaging for visitors of all ages. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and highly recommend it to anyone in Istanbul—especially families and history enthusiasts. A must-see!
Abdullah H — Google review
Went here in a whim and was absolutely blown away, this place is far cooler than any technology museum I’ve been to in Europe and US. The collection is not necessarily comprehensive, e.g. any sort of modern tech is almost no represented, but it doesn’t matter because the objects in the exposition are so special and fascinating, there’s whole hangars dedicated to just pre-1930s cars, just classic Italian motorboats, Bosporus row boats, etc etc. A whole passenger ferry houses the toys collection. There are sizeable antique airplanes you can walk into (or through, in the case of one WWII wreck lifted from the bottom of the sea). An amphibious car. Whole gigantic engines from steam ships. Working (like actually physically running) models of workshops. All in a beautiful historical docks setting. In short, this is the best day out for anyone interested in tech, design or history. My tip would be to get there early, I didn’t feel like I had nearly enough time to see even half of it properly in the 2 hours I had before it closed for the day

Türkiye is very lucky to have a such museum. Really good museum about Turkiye's Industrial history (not also Turkiye's). Very informative, very interesting. Must see place. Also workers are handsome. For example, the ticket seller was very helpful at the entrance. Security personnel were kind full. Thank to all
Rashad M — Google review
A very interesting museum, I highly recommend to visit it. It’s a huge space with multiple floors and plenty of exhibits. The entrance fee is affordable, but the experience is priceless. It’s perfect for anyone interested in technology, its development, and engineering design.

Sardis Ancient City

Ancient Ruins
Sardis Ancient City, located east of Izmir, is an astonishing archaeological site that was one of the most important cities in antiquity. The city boasts impressive ruins including a Roman gymnasium, synagogue, Byzantine churches, and the temple of Artemis. The site is still being excavated and has undergone significant refurbishment to preserve its historical significance. Visitors can explore the well-maintained synagogue with beautiful mosaics and a glass floor over one of them.
This was the fourth of the seven congratulations in the book of revelation that we saw yesterday and it was the least expensive and best one so far, helpful staff, nice shop, and ice cold drinks out front , don't forget there is more to see up the hill in another site and your 110 Turkish £ ticket covered it, on the same day
Kevin P — Google review
The Forgotten Glory of the Lydian Empire / Sardis, once the glittering capital of the Lydian Empire, offers a remarkably well-preserved glimpse into a once-thriving ancient civilization. The Lydian Empire flourished in western Anatolia from the 7th to 6th century BCE and is credited with inventing the world’s first known coinage, made of electrum. Under the legendary King Croesus, Sardis became synonymous with immense wealth and influence. One of the most impressive structures in Sardis today is the Roman-era gymnasium, with its reconstructed two-story marble façade, soaring arches, and monumental design that showcased Roman ideals of strength and education. Just beside it lies the grand ancient synagogue—one of the largest known from antiquity—testifying to the vibrant Jewish community that lived in Sardis. The synagogue’s well-preserved mosaic floors, adorned with geometric patterns, and the standing columns create a vivid picture of religious life in the late Roman period. When we arrived, we were surprised to find so few visitors despite the vastness of the site. It felt peaceful and uncrowded, allowing us to reflect more deeply. Seeing the scale of Sardis made us realize how vast and powerful the empire must have been. We truly hope more people take the time to visit this impressive and meaningful place. #SardisAncientCity #LydianEmpire #RomanGymnasium #AncientSynagogue #Mosaics #Croesus #SevenChurches

This was such a lovely place to visit. Lots of biblical and ancient history. It’s not as big as some other sites so you wouldn’t need as much time. I enjoyed visiting.

The City of Sardis. The capital of the Lydian empire of 200,000 inhabitants. Had the largest synagogue in Asia Minor and known for its elaborate Bath system and Gymnasium. A place you must see in turkey. This place in one of the seven churches mentioned in the bibile. The letter to the church in Sardis, warns its believers to Wake-up and take their walk with The Lord seriously.

Visited the ruins while on group tour with members of my church. We were amazed with the excavated ruins dating back to the Byzantine and Lydian eras. The gymnasium building and synagogue mosaics were definite highlights.

Nice place in very beautiful scenery. We visited this place in May for 5 days and it was cool, but not too cold, unless it rained. The thermal bath is very unique and classic, with tall rooms and white marble stone walls. 5/5 value for money. Good and practical place for the price. A bit old-fashioned. Rooms were good and clean enough. Friendly staff. Pools are separated for men and women but you can rent a family pool. Rooms have their own bath tubs with thermal water. A lot of parking place. Rooms are warm and have air-condition.

It's a beautiful place with rich nature, clean and well kept accommodation. It's a humble place that well worth the 180 tl price tag. Although it's an old place but amazingly well kept and clean. Having said that, it's time to renovate the furniture. I recommend this place over any hotel as it offers fantastic natural setting.

(Translated by Google) DETAILED DESCRIPTION I looked at the comments before coming, but I came anyway. The facility is very nice, we stayed in B type rooms, in large nature, very clean inside, nice sheets, very clean, I paid special attention to it, the thermal bathtub is in the bathroom, the bathtub was old, I guess they don't care much because it belongs to the municipality, but we washed it and used it. The water was very nice and hot, in fact, there is a refrigerator, TV, and stove in the rooms. You need to bring things like plates, glasses, etc. when you come, if you don't want to, there is a restaurant that serves grills within the facility, there is also a restaurant for breakfast, mixed breakfast for two people is 500. Before you reach the facility, there is an alcoholic restaurant 500 meters behind. The price is very reasonable. If you come in the summer, there is a large outdoor playground and a children's playground. Apart from that, there is a small grocery store within the facility selling junk food, shampoo, bread, cigarettes, etc. There is a common thermal pool in the area for men and women. Separately, there is a children's playground within the facility. We were satisfied. We paid 3000 TL per night for a room for 3 people. The price just seemed high to us. Other than that, it was very nice. Cakiraga Mansion is a historical gem located in the charming village of Birgi, Turkey. This well-preserved Ottoman mansion has been converted into a museum, showcasing its rich history and traditional lifestyle. The wooden building features stunning hand-painted decorations adorning the walls and ceilings, offering visitors a visual treat. Nestled in a green courtyard, the mansion boasts beautiful miniatures and frescoes, reflecting the opulence of its time.
A real gem in Birgi. The best part lace to be in the cosy old town of Birgi. It is good that it’s been converted to museum. Considering that it’s a wooden building well preserved. Hand painted decorations all over the walls and ceilings are absolutely beautiful.

Birgi is an enchanting village in Turkiye that feels untouched by time. Known for its beautifully preserved Ottoman architecture, rich historical significance, and peaceful “slow town” vibe, Birgi offers an immersive experience into Turkish heritage and rural life. Designated as a Cittaslow, or "slow town," Birgi takes pride in preserving its traditional lifestyle and natural environment, creating a refreshing escape for travelers seeking history, culture, and tranquility. Birgi’s roots trace back to ancient times, when it was home to Phrygian, Lydian, and Roman civilizations before flourishing under the Aydinids and later the Ottomans. As a result, Birgi is a living tapestry of history, blending diverse cultures and architectural styles in a way that feels both rich and harmonious. This legacy makes Birgi a unique and invaluable part of Turkey’s cultural landscape, as well as a destination of international importance for those interested in historical preservation. One of Birgi's most striking features is its well-preserved Ottoman architecture. Walking through the village's cobblestone streets, you’ll find elegant wooden houses with intricate woodwork and traditional stone facades, many of which date back centuries. The Çakırağa Mansion, one of Birgi’s most iconic buildings, is a masterpiece of Ottoman craftsmanship. Built in the 18th century, this grand mansion features beautifully painted interiors and detailed wood carvings that reflect the sophistication and artistic talent of its time. It’s a rare example of the Ottoman elite’s lifestyle and remains one of Turkey’s most treasured heritage sites. The Great Mosque of Birgi, or Ulu Camii, is another must-visit landmark. Built in the early 14th century by Mehmet Bey, the mosque is one of the oldest in Anatolia and a stunning example of Seljuk architecture. Its wooden minbar, decorated with delicate carvings, and the unique stone design reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of the Aydinid period. This mosque is a peaceful place to reflect on the region’s spiritual history and admire the craftsmanship that has withstood the centuries. Birgi’s commitment to preserving its heritage extends beyond its architecture to its way of life. As a Cittaslow, Birgi prioritizes sustainable living and traditional culture, inviting visitors to slow down and savor the small moments. The village’s narrow streets are lined with family-run shops, artisan markets, and cozy cafes where you can enjoy locally sourced food and handmade crafts. The pace of life here is slow, allowing you to truly appreciate the surroundings and connect with the local people, who are warm, welcoming, and proud of their heritage. The local cuisine is another highlight of a visit to Birgi. Many of the dishes here are prepared with ingredients grown in the surrounding farmlands and flavored with herbs from the Bozdağ Mountains. You can savor traditional Aegean dishes, from fresh olive oils to savory gözleme (stuffed flatbreads) and handcrafted jams. Dining in Birgi is not just a meal; it’s a cultural experience that showcases the village’s agricultural roots and commitment to sustainable practices. Birgi’s natural beauty adds to its charm, with lush landscapes, olive groves, and fresh mountain air. The village is surrounded by trails that lead into the Bozdağ Mountains, offering opportunities for hiking and exploring the pristine environment. Each season brings its own beauty to Birgi, from the vibrant blooms of spring to the golden hues of autumn. The landscape itself feels like part of the village’s identity, a source of pride and livelihood for the people who call it home. For anyone interested in history, architecture, or simply finding a peaceful retreat, Birgi is a remarkable destination. Its status as a slow town and dedication to preserving its heritage make it a model for sustainable tourism. By visiting Birgi, you’re not just exploring a village—you’re experiencing a way of life rooted in respect for tradition, nature, and community.

The Aphrodisias Ancient City Museum, established in 1979, showcases recovered artifacts from the historic Greek city of Aphrodisias. Located in a remote Anatolian region, this site encompasses vast expanses and beautiful natural surroundings such as Roman poplars, green fields and chirping birds. It was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2017 for its grandeur and scale.
While somewhat of a detour from other sites, this place is absolutely worth a visit. The site itself is phenomenal, with a largely intact greek amphitheater with a capacity of 30,000 people, an extensively restored public pool and Roman theater. You will see a lot without the crowds of Efesus or Pumukalle.

Way less crowded than Ephesus, and from my point of view experientially deeper and easier to immerse into the history of the place without the tour busses. Though smaller than Ephesus, the 170 m long swimming pool must have been a treat, and Aphrodisias had plenty of water the gardens were reportedly magnificent. Definitely a City I may have wanted to live in back in the day…
