Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro

Mentioned on

Basilica
Sights & Landmarks
Perched atop a 566-meter high hill near Braga, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro is a significant Catholic pilgrimage site in Portugal. It is the country's second most important sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary after Fatima. The sanctuary, founded in the 18th century and later expanded with a chapel and basilica, draws crowds of pilgrims who gather to honor the Virgin Mary every year on the first Sunday of June.
Definitely a must see when visiting Braga. We didn't expect such a monumental place. I cannot even say I "liked" it. The area is huge and overdimensioned and gives a very special feeling. Maybe comparable with former Nazi Rally Ground in Nuremberg. It makes you think. Portugal must have a very special relation with the catholic church. You need to be there and feel. Pick a sunny day and plan several hours. Bom Jesus is another important catholic place nearby, you could combine the visit, but maybe you shouldn't, because the impact is totally different.
Grigory G — Google review
Beautiful cathedral and give very calm feeling. We got ice cream in a cafe near it and we were just sitting and chilling outside on the bench. Really peaceful place. Architecture is beautiful and I loved two angels statues before the entrance.
Daryna H — Google review
Lovely setting up above Bom Jesus, worth the visit. Mass is said on Wednesday at 11.00am in English if interested. There is a huge conference (?) center beneath the church where I guess they hold major religious events that are too big for the church.
Owen T — Google review
Located at the top of a hill 350 meters above Braga. Is special due to its stunning panoramic views of Braga, it’s significance as major Marian pilgrimage site, and its impressive, large-scale Neoclassical architecture. It is a serene place for reflection, a significant religious monument that hosted Pope John Paul II, and it's conveniently located near the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary
Karl C — Google review
We saw this on the way to Bom Jesus Do Monte and speed to have a look. We didn't go into the basilica, but admired it from the outside. The complex that the sanctuary is on is vast and beautiful. The steps leading up to the church and the columns are majestic
Caitlin Z — Google review
Higher up than Bom Jesus so worth visiting at the same time. Plenty of parking. A wide flight of straight steps lead up to the church and I have been there when there is a large canopy/alter between the two pillars at the top of the steps where presumably priests address large outdoor congregations on the steps below on special religious occasions. At certain times you can gain access to the dome walkway for a reasonable charge.
Roger T — Google review
This is one of Portugal’s most important Marian pilgrimage sites, located atop Monte Sameiro. It began in 1863 when Father Martinho António Pereira da Silva of the Archdiocese of Braga erected a small monument to commemorate the 1854 proclamation of the Immaculate Conception. Construction of the main church began in 1863, with a new expansion in 1890, and the sanctuary was eventually completed in the 20th century in Neoclassical style. Major pilgrimages are held annually on the first Sunday of June and the third Sunday of August.

Dom Afonso Henriques

Mentioned on
4 lists
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Dom Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, is commemorated by an imposing statue in his birthplace. The monument was crafted by Soares dos Reis and unveiled in 1874. It's notable for depicting the king with short sleeves, a detail that reflects an interesting historical anecdote about the sculptor's dispute with the town. This significant landmark stands as a tribute to the father of Portugal and offers visitors a glimpse into the past and its intriguing stories.
Cool statue, I love the fact it has short sleeves, which never would’ve happened in the middle ages. I hear that the town was not going to pay the sculptor so he gave them a short sleeve statue as revenge.
Mitch S — Google review
The first King of Portugal, his statue stand in front of the castle, he hold the sword and shield. We take a walk around, see the beautiful plants and trees.
Daud — Google review
This monument honors Dom Afonso Henriques, the first king and founder of the Kingdom of Portugal. It’s a meaningful and historic site, well worth a visit for anyone interested in Portuguese history. As a side note, there’s also a commemorative plaque placed here by a former Brazilian president — a touch that highlights the shared heritage between Portugal and Brazil.

Important: in case of some weather conditions like rain, the top view point may be closed It's a remain of an old medieval wall, located in the city centre, called Torre da Porta Nova. Magikland - Amusement Park

Water & Amusement Parks
Magikland - Amusement Park is a family-friendly destination featuring outdoor swimming pools, a roller coaster, fairground rides, and picnic areas. While the snack bars may need improvement in terms of efficiency, the park offers a mix of dry and wet attractions for an enjoyable day out with the entire family. Visitors can expect to find ample places to rest and store belongings, although shaded areas are limited. The park's amazing pools and pleasant crew make it a great place to spend the day with kids.
The kids had a blast! Buying tickets was easy and fast. Although there were lots of summer camp groups, there was no wait to buy tickets ir enter the gates. Amusement park looks like it peaked in the 70s, and has been living off its investments from that. however, the park isn’t great condition, and it is clear that they take great care of it. It was wonderful, because it truly is vintage, and a step back in time. This amusement park is geared towards small children, it is not an area for adults, although there are rights adults may go on. We had our five year-old twins, and they had a blast! From an adult perspective, the park seems to lack any identity, as the “lands” had teams such as pirates, Africa, and Disney? They really didn’t do a good job, unifying their themes. Would the cost of admission being as high as it is, you think they would be investing a little bit more into updating rides or adding more to the park. That’s what I was disappointed with, the cost versus the availability of new rides. You also have to use Google maps to get there, there is absolutely no signage until you’re one traffic circle away. This is a typical field of most Portuguese businesses. I’m not sure if it has to do with laws, but trying to find anything without Google maps is kind of almost impossible here. There is one restaurant that offers cafeteria style food, which actually was decent. All of the other stands offer ice cream and basic cafeteria options. It is very hot here, make sure you have plenty of water. Some of the attractions have no shade for their line, so sunscreen is an absolute necessity. On-site parking is free. We went at the end of July, and the parking lot was never full in the park was half empty. Very few rides had a wait longer than one ride turn. If you have kids, I highly recommend this park. The girls had fun, and I can see this being an annual pilgrimage, next time with some friends!
Brian J — Google review
A beautiful park that combines games, swimming pools, and some cafes. It is very suitable for families and children. You can spend a whole day without getting bored.
Moheimen J — Google review
Magikland seems to be a go-to spot for families, mainly because there aren't many other amusement parks in Portugal, which might explain its popularity. However, while the park offers some rides and pools (which kids enjoy), many of the attractions feel outdated and not very safe, and the lines for rides can be long, especially on busy days. The entrance prices are high, particularly for a family of five, which makes it less budget-friendly. Many areas also need renovation, which affects the overall experience. Kids tend to enjoy the pools more than the rides, so if your focus is water fun, a local outdoor pool might be a better option. It’s an okay place but has room for improvement.
Lilia S — Google review
Amazing place to spend a day with kids - and great for adults as well. Portugal really needs this kind of places with the such good weather we have and being the people that works the most - we really need where to chill and enjoy a kids like day.
Ana S — Google review
After years visiting the park with my kids, this year has been very disappointing. They closed the self-service restaurant (which never was great) and it wasn't notified. Because of that, we had to wait for more than two hours just to eat two half-frozen pizzas and three quite bad hot dog. All the other food wasn't available. Small kids were super hungry and parents quite stressed. They also had mechanical problems in several activities leading to long queues and a bit of mistrust in the safety measures. All of this happened in September, I can't imagine how would be in July/August. In summary, bring your own food and all your patience when visiting this place
Toni R — Google review
Nice for children up to 12 years, do bring your swimming suite... :)
Willem W — Google review
Kids loved it, amazing family place
J B — Google review
Was a pleasant experience, but the familiy discount that is presented on the entrance, apparently, requires a father even if you don't have one... It can't just be a single mother.

The Gaia Cable Car, located at the Jardim do Morro station, offers a breathtaking aerial view of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. The five-minute trip takes you 300 meters high, providing picturesque views of Porto's historical center, Gaia's wine cellars, the riverfront, Clerigos neighborhood, and the Douro River.
We took the cable car round-trip, and it was a fun experience. The views of the city from the base were fantastic and definitely the highlight of the ride. At the top, there isn’t much beyond the usual tourist attractions—restaurants and short boat trips—but the ride itself was well worth it (ten euros) for the scenery and the experience. A great way to take in the city from above and enjoy a unique perspective.

It’s cool but I think for 7 euros per person, it’s a little overpriced. I think things like these should be priced to keep maintenance up but then be a gift to the people of the city from getting from place to place in a beautiful and inspiring way

Caves Cálem is one of the most iconic places to deepen your knowledge about Port wine. Visitors can experience high-quality wines and gain a better understanding of why Port wine has such a special legacy. The interactive museum offers innovative 5D cinema sessions, providing an in-depth exploration of the Douro region and Port wine, from terroir to grape varieties and different styles.
A very enjoyable experience in Porto. We booked the visit through GetYourGuide, but you can also reserve directly at the location. The winery is in a great spot—right across from the Douro River and in a lovely, walkable area. The tour started on time with a small group, which made the experience more personal and comfortable. Our guide was very attentive, explaining the history of Cálem, the production process, and the different types of Port wine with clarity and friendliness. We visited the interactive museum, which is modern and well-designed, and finished with a tasting of three different wines, all excellent. The place is clean, pleasant, and well-organized. Definitely worth it if you’re in Porto and want to learn more about the region’s famous wine.

Really enjoyed our tour around here, very informative and friendly guide who made everything really interesting, was great to walk between the maturing port and see (and smell!) the history. Tasting itself was pretty good too - we went for the exclusive, so three types, all with generous measures! Well stocked shop at reasonable prices too
Jamie P — Google review
For context, the reason we chose this place was mainly due to the fact that of our 6 days in Portugal we only had 2 in Porto, and only 1.5 really in Porto considering that half a day was dedicated to Guimaraes.... Given these time constraints we found this place attractive as it was the only place in our research that gave you a winery tour along with a fado show at the end and both of those had good reviews. So we thought, well, why not, let's kill two birds with one stone and it turned out to be a brilliant decision! We booked them online and the overall winery tour >> wine tasting + fado experience takes about 1.5 hours. They begin with the tour (multiple languages available, we chose english) around 6.30 PM where our guide explained to us what distinguishes Port wine from other wines (both within Iberia and elsewhere) and why the soil and climate of the Douro valley make it ideal for Port wine cultivation. She also explained many minutiae about Portugese wine growing culture around Port wine and how it's more family business run and smaller scale than the industrial grade spanish wine growing culture. She threw around tidbits of cork also but honestly the best thing she told me was that there existed the notion of "Port and tonic" which is like "gin and tonic" but with Port wine instead and I can't believe I didn't know that from earlier research because boy it was delicious and "Port & tonic" IMO is the ONLY way to have Port wine... I dare you to change my mind....!! Anyway they took us through their winery, they showed all the barrels of different sizes and explain the significance of them... It's quite an exhaustive tour at the end of which your fado show is combined with the wine tasting experience... So for the wine tasting, they have us each a glass of the fine white and a 10 year aged tawny port red. You know how they say the best compliment that food can get is that the person eating just shuts up and eats it all up, I believe the finest compliment a wine tasting can get is if the taster ends up buying the wines they tasted and you can see now that those 2 bottles accompanied me in an 11 hour indirect flight to India, and now sit in my collection :) The Fado show was brilliant too, definitely the piece de resistance of the tour when paired with the wine tasting..... The performers were very talented and energetic and the atmosphere felt cosy enough for one to connect with the performers while admittedly not being a very small venue.... So if you want a fado where there is a very limited audience maybe this isn't the place for you.... We really enjoyed this experience though On the whole from the vibe of the place, to the staff, to the collection and killing 2 birds with one stone, I've no regrets and do recommend this place to folks who may want a similarly clubbed experience

Wonderful Tour With Great Insights We thoroughly enjoyed our visit — our guide was knowledgeable, welcoming, and made every stage of the tour genuinely engaging. Walking through the ageing port cellars was a real highlight, complete with the sights (and smells!) of history in the making. We opted for the exclusive tasting, which offered three varieties of port served in generous measures and felt well worth the upgrade. The on-site shop was also nicely stocked with reasonably priced options. All in all, a great experience that I’d definitely recommend!

Good winery experience. The guide was very informative and helpful. The wine tasting had one white port & red port, each with good notes and flavor, and came with crackers. The front row seat was amazing :) I had a nice view of the fado performance, and enjoyed it very much.

An amazing & well designed mix of technology combined with traditional wine processes all setup within cool caves. An interesting & engaging environment, combined with a professional, easy to understand & great visual presentation of all you want & need to know. With enjoyable tasting offerings culminating in a great tasting experience. Love your work!

Nice self guided introduction of winery before we met up with the actual tour guide who Gave an excellent history of port and the cellars. Completing the tour with our selected package of 2 Port wines tasting without food or guide, sitting at pic nic style tables/ benches. It was an overall short and sweet experience at Calem.
Maria T — Google review
During our three-day stay in Porto, we visited the Calem wine cellars, which included a tour of the facilities, a porto wine tasting, and a Fado show. It was an incredible experience that we truly enjoyed. We highly recommend it!

Sandeman is a historic winery housed in a 1797 building, offering guided tours of its port cellars and tastings. The cellar boasts an impressive collection of vintage ports dating back to the 19th century, including vintages from 1815, 1820, 1834, and 1847.
The wine tour was fantastic with a great guide who managed to answer all the questions. We went for the 5 wine tasting which was with a group size of 10 people and held in a private room which made it feel even more special. I have to agree with our host that for value for money and taste that the 20 year tawny wine was by far the best in all respects. A worthwhile tour with a lasting memory!

We did the tour! The tour guide was dressed up as the wine label logo, which was fun! Able to sample three varieties at the end of the tour - not our favorite but still enjoyed the experience.

Very nice tour, well worth your time and money. The tasting was great and offered us some new varieties that we had not tried before.

Visited Sandeman’s Port Cellar in Gaia recently—and wow, what a treat! The cellar sits right on the riverfront, so it’s easy to find and sets a lovely scene. We opted for the three port tastings. Our guide walked us through where all the barrels, casks and vintage bottles as stored along with the story of the timeless “Don,” and Sandeman’s 200-year legacy. The group was small, which made it feel relaxed and personal. Highly recommended—just be sure to book ahead! Whether you go for the quick visit or the aged-tawny indulgence, it's a classy experience with a side of story and scenery.

This is an amazing tour of one of the premium brands of ports. Though it was originally an English business it is now owned by the same company that makes Mateus rosé. Our guide through the seller was very knowledgeable and personable. Her ability to explain the process of making port and other fortified wines was wonderful. The tour itself takes you through the aging barrels and into a screening room where a video is played of the process. The tour ended in the sales roomwhere a tasting of the white port and a Tory port was provided. There was been an opportunity to purchase some of these fantastic ports. A wonderful tour of a great port maker in the city that made port famous.

The port tour and tasting here was excellent. Our guide was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions in detail. The tasting consisted of five ports in a private room at the end of the tour which was a very nice touch. We’d highly recommend you try Sandeman’s for your port cellar and tasting tour!

What a location! Just walked by this time, but I heard this winery has quite the history. I think they also offer tasting tours. Will try next time!

The Sandeman 1790 tour was one of the highlights of our trip to Porto. It’s great value for money. The tour itself was really interesting and just the right length. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable, and the small group size made the whole experience feel more personal. The best part was the tasting at the end in the private 1790 room. It’s a beautiful space and gives the whole experience an extra touch that you wouldn’t get in the regular tasting room. Highly recommend choosing this version of the tour.

Passadiços do Paiva Trailhead (Areinho) offers a stunning 5.5-mile wooden walkway along the Paiva River, providing breathtaking views of the valley. The well-maintained 8km trail allows for side-by-side walking and leads to the Arouca 516m suspension bridge, although reservations are necessary due to limited availability. This picturesque route showcases untouched landscapes, crystal-clear river waters, and endangered European species.
Phenomenal views, even during rainy weather! The main drag of the trail - including the suspension bridges - is ticketed requiring purchase online. Well worth the experience. Can make a full day out of the hike and surrounding local cafes. Highly recommended.
John P — Google review
This place is amazing, absolutely spectacular. There is a small restaurant next to the car park. You can find everything you need there. Excellent food and very helpful staff. The trail is steep, long and challenging. Especially if you're doing it in 30°C. Tho well worth it. The bridge has to be booked separately. Otherwise, the trail up to the bridge is free if you want to carry on, it costs 4euros per person. Well worth it tho.
Sheislikea W — Google review
Unique experience, but an absolute must do in the region of Arouca. Totally worth to spend some time in nature. Well signed trail, parking and information on how to buy tickets. The wooden path was 2€ per person, crossing the bridge an extra 12€, but totally worth it.
Afonso G — Google review
This trail was beautiful but absolutely terrifying, if you do not like heights, I do not recommend. The pathway is mostly stairs, hanging off the cliff, high above the river. Not an easy stroll along the river.
Cassandra W — Google review
A must visit place! Get yourself comfy shoes, a bottle of/for water (they have tap water on the top), a swimsuit to swim in the river after the hike, something for picknik and enjoy stunning Portuguese nature. Loved this place soo much!
Sandra Z — Google review
Nice view from any part of the trail. Bridge is very impressive 1 km uphill from the Trailhead. Easy way to start from opposite side, but no parking on that side. You can go 4 km and back 4 km. Or take taxi back to the Trailhead. Or pickup with second car if you have.
Arie O — Google review
Really nice plan. Better go before 8 or 9 am. You gave to buy you entrance 2€ on line before . Bring comfortable shoes, tennis shoes are enough. Amazing views. Very well maintained wooden paths. Bring bath suit. You can take a taxi or a 4x4 jeep for the same price 20€ to go back to the starting point, so you don’t have to go back 9 km again .
Sonia G — Google review
It’s a really nice trail. If you book the suspension bridge you have to be at the bridge at that time because it’s a guided tour. We thought it was a time slot so we couldn’t go on there anymore. There are some nice spots to go for a swim in the river. You might want to bring water shoes because there are some sharp stones. There is a restroom about halfway. You should go there in the morning when there is still some shade (we got there at around 8:30 am).

Taylors Port offers a fascinating journey through time, delving into the history of Porto wine, viticulture, the Douro region, and the remarkable story of Taylors. Visitors can explore the extensive cellars with an electronic audio-guide providing insights into the company's heritage and winemaking processes. The self-guided tour allows for flexibility in pacing and is ideal for those with limited time or seeking an overview of port production.
Had an awesome winery experience :) It’s a self-guided tour (you need headphones) which took around an hour to complete. Total historic tour of this winery and wine-making. After the tour, you will walk into an amazingly beautiful garden for tasting session. It was super scorching day, so i sat indoors by the window for tasting and it was perfect!! I had both cool atmosphere and the perfect garden view. I tried [extra dry white port][10year tawny][vintage port]. Ordered some olives and taylor’s natas (chocolate layer inside) for pairing with the drinks. All the staffs were kind, informative.and attentive. :)
Hanna B — Google review
This was a fantastic port cellar to visit! The tour itself is very informative and has a lot of historical artifacts, videos, and of course the barrels of port in the giant warehouse. The tour is all self guided at your pace, and gives a complete history of the company and also the port making process. The best part is of course the tasting at the end in Taylor’s beautiful garden. The ports we tried were all top notch (especially the 10 year) and the server was very knowledgeable about the styles. Most definitely worth a special visit if you’re in Porto.
David S — Google review
1) I liked the port wine. 2) If you visit, I think the tour including a tasting is a better deal than just the tasting, with tasting sets starting at 22 EUR. 3) Be aware that while the garden is nice, you won’t have much of a view of Porto. 4) Stay away from the bread basket — at 8 EUR for six tiny pieces of mediocre bread, I thought this was a real rip-off that left a bitter taste on the whole experience
Mary S — Google review
We enjoyed visiting this wine cellar and recommend this place to other visitors. The tour is informative and shares context on the wine making process and some history of the founders of this cellar. You get the chance to pass by some real big barrels which was cool. The highlight of the tour was the tasting. You taste the wines in the rooftop garden and if you go to the balcony, you will have a nice view of porto. There is a shop that you can purchase wines. The price was fair for the experience (~€25).
Reza N — Google review
We had such a great tour of the port, followed by a tasting that was absolutely delicious. Marri (forgive me if I’m spelling her name wrong!) was our waitress she was so sweet, spoke perfect English, and really took the time to help us pair our port with food. The pairings were spot-on and made the experience even better. The grounds are stunning, covered in grapevines everywhere you really feel like you’re in the heart of a winery. They also have a charming little shop where you can purchase their port and even their own house olive oil. Another bonus they’re open on Mondays, when many of the other ports in the area are closed. We actually stumbled upon this place, and I’m so glad we did!

If you love port, or think you might, and can splurge a bit for the tawny master class, I highly recommend doing so. While I did it, my wife did the audioguide tour and we both enjoyed ourselves immensely. We didn't do all the bodegas but of the ones we did, this was our favorite.

Graham's Port Lodge, established in 1820 by Scottish brothers, offers an elegant and exclusive experience for those seeking to avoid the bustling riverside crowds. The tour begins with a brief video followed by an informative guided tour delving into the history of the Symington family and the various types of Port wine. Visitors appreciate the unhurried pace set by knowledgeable guides, making it one of the top choices for Port wine lodges.
Great wine tour and tasting! We walked up from the water's edge and that is an experience in its own right. Once at the top, the view over the city from Graham's restaurant terrace is incredible. We were lucky to find couple of places on their vintage tour. The tasting took place after the cellar tour I the vintage 1room.we had 3 port and cheese and Pastel de nata. I would recommend the tour but better to book in advance otherwise you may need to wait or don't find room. Our English speaking guide was very knowledgeable and articulate!

This is a small Port winery established since 1890s with a lovely adjourning Vinum restaurant overlooking the beautiful city. All the wine making and corking process is still being performed traditionally by hand. The port tasting was interesting as I tasted rich and sweet to nutty and smooth (my first time). The dinner was gastronomical (grilled sausages, crispy pork belly, wine pairing, etc.). 😋
Christine — Google review
Graham’s winery was amazing! The small museum is very interesting, and our guide was excellent, fluent in English and shared lots of fascinating details. The port wine tasting was great as well. Portions for the food pairings could be a bit bigger, but overall it was a very enjoyable experience.
Stavroula G — Google review
We visited for a late-morning pre-booked English tour & tasting. We walked from Porto, which was all fine until we started to climb to Graham's - it was a challenging walk on the roads, with very teeny tiny shoulders! We arrived with only a few minutes to spare for our scheduled tour time. The exterior grounds and view are GORGEOUS - absolutely spectacular. If I had realized they were that nice I likely would have just had a drink on the terrace to soak it all in. However, the tour was mostly interesting; longer and more detailed than I had anticipated it being. I'm glad we did it, though I don't remember any of the information provided now. I think we had the misfortune of being in a tour group with some rather pretentious types; I felt a little bad for the tour guide (who was very friendly) as some of the guests seemed to be peppering her with some snooty-seeming (to me) questions. Maybe it was just a handful of bougie travellers, I don't know. The tour was followed by a tasting in a large, open room; we just did the basic tasting of 3 ports (I'm not a Port person, but the LBV was good) but I noticed others likely purchased one of the upgraded experiences with tasting items, etc. That part was mostly left on our own to taste, after the guide explained things, which I liked. We walked through the shop at the end, took another look around the beautiful landscaping and terrace, and hopped on an Uber back to our next destination!

Went here at open and everyone was super accommodating and nice. Did a tasting and bought lots of goodies at the gift shop. The shop is fully stocked with amazing stuff at great prices.
Michael G — Google review
The views are the best of any port winery in the city and the tasting rooms are very nice. I just wish I’d skipped the “premium” tasting (the “six grapes” blend was horrible) and cheese “pairing” (quite bad) in favor of the nicer tasting options.

Lovely visit to the Thermal Spa. Make sure you book in advance by calling or popping in as they get busy especially on a weekend. We opted for the Aqva Circuito Termal with a deep and relaxing massage. In total it cost €75 per person. We got an hour in the thermal pool with jets, sauna and steam room. The massage was relaxing and the staff were lovely and spoke good English. The place wasn’t crowded we went on a Friday Afternoon there was one other couple in there. Skin felt really soft after. Visited the Castle of Santa Maria da Feira today and, although it was closed (as it is every Monday), the peaceful grounds offered a perfect opportunity for quiet photography. The castle’s impressive medieval architecture and well-preserved walls make it a striking landmark, even from the outside. Its dramatic towers and unique defensive features stand as a testament to centuries of Portuguese history, dating back to the 11th century. While I couldn’t explore the interior this time, the tranquil surroundings and panoramic views from the exterior are well worth a visit, especially if you enjoy capturing historic sites without the crowds. I recommend checking opening hours before your visit, as the castle is closed on Mondays and has specific hours on weekends. Looking forward to returning when it’s open to explore inside!

The 'Viagem Medieval em Terras de Sta. Maria' is an annual medieval-themed event held in Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal. This festival is one of the largest historical reenactment festivals in Europe and takes place during the summer months. The city itself is known for its rich cultural heritage and hosts this fascinating festival that offers a unique experience for visitors.
Great experience to participate, everything is well organized and adjusted to give out the medieval spirit, there is no mess, everything is streamlined. The food and attractions are varied and exciting. There are parking spots at the premises that charge a small fee for the whole day. It can get very crowded so it is better to arrive early and if you are coming for one day, I'd go with a weekday and not weekend.

Viagem Medieval in Santa Maria da Feira is a fantastic experience for those who love history and medieval culture. The festival brings the past to life with impressive reenactments, costumes, food, and music. It’s a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the medieval atmosphere. However, the event tends to be very crowded, making it difficult to fully enjoy some of the activities. The long lines and large number of people can be overwhelming at times. It’s also important to note that this event takes place in the summer, and the heat can make it uncomfortable for some visitors. I think limiting the attendance or spreading the event across more days could make it more comfortable. Still, the event is beautiful and offers a lot of fun, especially for families.

Santa Maria da Feira is a historic city in Portugal known for its rich cultural heritage and festivals. One of the lesser-known but fascinating festivals in Santa Maria da Feira is the "Viagem Medieval em Terra de Santa Maria" or the "Medieval Journey in the Land of Santa Maria de Feira . The Viagem Medieval is a medieval-themed event that takes place annually in Santa Maria da Feira during the summer. It's one of the largest historical reenactment festivals in Europe. The city transforms into a medieval town, recreating the atmosphere, costumes, and lifestyle of the Middle Ages. Visitors to the festival are transported back in time to the medieval period, with streets and squares filled with knights, troubadours, artisans, and performers, all dressed in authentic medieval clothing. The festival aims to provide an immersive experience that gives participants a glimpse into the past. Throughout the city, elaborate scenarios are set up to recreate different aspects of medieval life, including markets, workshops, battles, and court scenes. Visitors can explore these scenarios, interact with characters, and witness various reenactments. The festival offers a wide range of entertainment and activities for visitors of all ages. There are jousting tournaments, medieval music and dance performances, storytelling sessions, theater plays, and more. Traditional crafts and skills are also showcased, allowing attendees to learn about medieval craftsmanship. Food is an essential part of the Viagem Medieval experience. Traditional medieval dishes and beverages are served at various stalls and eateries. It's a chance for visitors to indulge in authentic flavors from the past. The festival is not just about entertainment; it also has educational value. Schools often organize trips to the festival, giving students the opportunity to learn about history in an engaging and interactive way. The Viagem Medieval em Terra de Santa Maria is an enchanting and lesser-known festival that offers a unique blend of history, entertainment, and cultural immersion. It allows attendees to step into the shoes of medieval inhabitants and experience life as it was centuries ago

It was the second time I visited, and there was still a lot of new things to see since they always have a temporary exhibition. I would suggest everyone take the combined ticket for €13 to also visit the experience center, which includes their workshop. The exhibition is not made just by cars. They have other things like toys, paintings, and sculptures. For me, It's not really worth the travel if you're just going there, so pick a nice restaurant and look for other things you might wanna see. The road from Porto to Caramulo is very pretty.

Fantastic! Loved it! From Rolls Royce Phantoms to Gull wing Mercedes and other gems like Harley Davidson and Indian Motorcycles and WWII exhibition... The best!

Nice museum with interesting stuff to see. Top floor is a gallery. The main floor in the main building has an interesting display of ww2 cars, wagons and artillery, stamps, flags etc... In this floor you can also see old fashion toys displayed in a different room. The second building has old fashion cars from 1880 to 1940. The ticket will allow to you to visit another building displaying more ww2 vehicles. In here you also have a virtual reality experience.

Set high in the lush Serra do Caramulo hills overlooking a sweeping valley, the Museu do Caramulo is a delightful blend of art and automotive heritage—from vibrant works by Picasso, Dalí, and Vieira da Silva to around 100 beautifully preserved classic cars and motorbikes
Alex Z — Google review
Very impressive museum with some masterpieces like Dali, Rodin, Picasso also pieces from the 16th century till the 20th century, besides a lots of cars and ww2 cars and products
Danny D — Google review
Lovely place where history of the automotive industry can be seen and felt. There is also a art museum as well as an experience center where one can see the detailed work involved in car renovation. Something I really enjoyed was seeing the small matchbox and other collections.
José P — Google review
The museum is very interesting, with the main section thoughtfully divided into different art historical periods. The part devoted to World War II is located in different areas, but it’s worth visiting both. The car section is also impressive, featuring several truly rare models. The ticket price is reasonable

Aveiro station

Train station
Sights & Landmarks
Architectural Buildings
Aveiro Station, also known as Estacao Ferroviaria de Aveiro, is a modern central train station located near the city center. It operates daily with various timetables for Alfa Pendular, Intercity, Regional, Suburban, and Vouga Regional trains. The new design of the station stands in contrast to the old azulejo-decorated building nearby. There are plans to convert the classic structure into a museum or regional information office.
The original station was opened in 1864 with the inauguration of the Linha do Norte (North Line). In 1916, the building underwent a major renovation, during which 59 azulejo panels were added to the façade. The tiles were designed by Licínio Pinto and Francisco Pereira and produced by the Fábrica da Fonte Nova. The tile panels follow a dual theme: those on the platform side introduce travel destinations, while those facing the city depict scenes of everyday life in Aveiro. Due to growing rail demand in the late 20th century, a new contemporary station building was added, while the old station has been preserved for its cultural and historical significance. Today, the station is served by Alfa Pendular, Intercidades, Regionais, and Porto Urban Trains, making it a key hub in Portugal’s rail network.
Seokjin H — Google review
Current station is new and so so, but there's a smaller building nearby painted with beautiful azulejo tiles depicting scenes from Aveiro, including the boats and the salt.
Chin H — Google review
This station is a gem and beautifully preserved. The classic tiles and very clean, fresh paint make this a very attractive sight. The train operations were very good, the directions to the trains easy to follow even if you do not speak Portuguese. It made my visit from Porto easy and pleasant.
Gary R — Google review
The Train station is colorful and loves the hanging of exhibition information while using the staircase.
AKINWALE O — Google review
The ancient train station is very beautiful, the wall fresco's tells a lot about the town and its history. The small shop that's inside the station got all sorts of souvenirs. From local wines to specialty snakes.
Liban D — Google review
The station is quite far from the city center. I walked from University of Aveiro to the station around 45 minutes. I did not see much sign to go to the station. I opened google maps to make sure that I am in a correct direction. The station is quite big and clean. You can find information from the worker. The schedule is easy to find for your trip. They provide hand sanitizer for the customers. Do not for get to wear your mask before entering the station.
Rita — Google review
The station itself was nice especially the original parts. The only problem was the train operation went on strike at noon, stranding people who were heading elsewhere.

Very nice centre to get a good dose of retail therapy, the centre is very modern , located in the old town area with an underground car park to avail of. Aveiro, often called the “Venice of Portugal,” truly lives up to its name. One of the best ways to enjoy the town is through a moliceiro boat ride — colorful, calm, and full of charm. The tour takes about 45 minutes, gliding through canals with a multilingual guide sharing local history and architecture. The boats themselves are artistic and photogenic, and the ride is smooth and family-friendly. Highly recommended for those wanting a unique and relaxing view of the town.

Aveiro is called the Venice of Portugal where the Ria de Aveiro runs thru the middle of the city. It runs from the Atlantic ocean where there are salt fields . A canal off the river is a fishing village. Definitely take one of the gondolas to see the city and the river.

Ana ( — Google review
The Aveiro Lagoon (Ria de Aveiro) is an exceptionally unique natural feature that fundamentally defines the city of Aveiro, earning it the moniker "the Venice of Portugal." Its most distinctive characteristic is its complex network of interconnected canals, lagoons, and islands formed by the confluence of river deltas and the sea. This intricate aquatic landscape is home to a rich ecosystem and provides the picturesque setting for the city. Unique to the lagoon are the colourful moliceiros, traditional wooden boats with distinctive painted prows. These highly decorated boats, once used to harvest moliço (seaweed for fertiliser), now primarily offer scenic tours, providing an iconic visual associated only with Aveiro. The lagoon's constant interaction with the Atlantic Ocean, its role in the region's salt production, and its rich biodiversity, including various bird species, all contribute to making the Ria de Aveiro a singular and vital natural and cultural landscape.

Praia da Costa Nova is a stunning beach destination that captivates visitors with its unique charm. This picturesque stretch of sandy coastline, extending over 9 kilometers along the western peninsula, is renowned for its vibrant striped houses that create a colorful backdrop against the golden sands and rolling dunes. The beach offers ample space for sunbathing and relaxation, even during peak summer months when the northern section tends to attract more crowds.
Strong winds all day, it is not very crowded, so you can feel really small compared to the ocean, walking alone on the beach, hearing big waves and wind coming past you, it feel so good.
Daud — Google review
There is a wooden path that stretches a long way next to the dunes and the beach. It is much easier to walk on the path than on sand, but both feel nice 😁

Very nice beach with long and wide shore with nice and soft sand. Along the beach h there are a lot of wooden paths that allow you to enjoy a long walk with great views of the beach and ocean. Even though it was August the water was very cold so it is not nice for swimming. Also the coast is very windy.

You must come see this amazing private collection of art from around the world. We thought we were coming for a museum about wine and boy were we pleasantly surprised by what we found. Not only were there incredible caves filled with wine but also 150 million years+ old fossils and more. You do not want to miss this fantastic museum and wine tasting.
Portia W — Google review
A Great exhibition with a lot of fascinating paleontologic wonders and world’s treasures, it was all well explained by our tour guide and at the end we tasted some of the wines from local baga grapes and sangrias:) It’s worth seeing for sure. We would love to hear more about minerals and the African part of the exhibition, it was too short to take a look of every fine bit of it. Wonderful experience, thank you!

What a hidden gem. The tour was very interesting for the whole family including 8 years old , the size of the museum is enormous and unexpected , collection is great and precious and entrance ticket is only 6 euro including easing and free for children. Definitely recommend

We didn't know that they only do guided tours at certain times.. But luckily we managed to get really nice guided tour just for the two of us with really nice and friendly guide... That was worth of 1.5 h of waiting.. Especially that we got nice lunch recommendations to spend the time.
Ingrid V — Google review
I don’t get it how this place has 4,6 stars. It’s probably the worst “museum” I’ve ever been to, in any sense. It’s not actually even a museum but just a collection of stuff this super rich Portuguese guy bought (if he really bought all of that), many random things like photos of Gandhi, African art and Portuguese azulejos, all just put there without any sense. Additionally to the ethically highly problematic questions on why he owns all that, for example 1500 years old African urns which definitely belong in a proper archaeological museum, the things are just put somewhere without any explanation. There are no plates or tags explaining the objects or even just saying what they are, they don’t even have numbers, and they are all just “from Africa”, no context information at all about from which country and which time period. But the actually worst thing was the guide. Talking and behaving like you would imagine a trump-propagandist, he was all the time praising his lord Joao Berardo for how great he was in putting this stuff together and that their wine was the best in Portugal and that all the other wine companies were just crap. Especially, presenting to us the objects in the most superficial way that I ever witnessed from a museum guide (even when answering to questions). Like we were 5 year old kids. So: ethically very problematic, absolutely no musealization concept and presented in a really disgusting way. The wine was ok.
David E — Google review
A great spot to see some cool artifacts from around the world, and taste some great snacks and sparkling wines after the tour finishes. Goncalo Costa was an excellent tour guide, he spoke fluent English and cares about history and sharing it with others. If life allows the opportunity, would love to visit again!

Well-marked trails lead to attractions like Vale dos Fetos (Valley of the Ferns) and Fonte Fria. The Via Sacra trail passes by chapels on its way to Cruz Alta, offering stunning views.
This was a magical spot on our whirlwind through Portugal. The hiking is so lush and fern filled, the camellia trees were incredible. We spent 3 hours here, but could have spent 8. Absolutely beautiful walking paths. I was shocked by the California Redwoods, not where I expected to see them!

Fantastic place! Reminds me a fairytale, full of hidden paths, moss covered trees and Bible stories. Also there are huge eucalyptus trees there, 160 years old araucaria and even sequoias. It was a pity though that we were not all of to see the hotel lobby - it has magnificent interior

One of the most scenic and reinvigorating areas in central Portugal. Gorgeous forest, with a few patches of native species. It’s like entering a magic land, with fresh clean air and a lush green canopy. We spent one day with small children and it was way too little. I’ll certainly come back to explore and hike, and potentially spend some volunteering working hours at one of their many environmental actions.

Palace Hotel Bussaco is a lavish former palace with stately rooms and suites, featuring a banquet hall and a bar with a fireplace. It offers an exceptional staff and service, along with thematic decor that reflects its rich history. The hotel's location in the Bussaco National Forest provides guests with the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature, offering stunning views and peaceful hiking trails. While some guests found the food slightly expensive, they praised the attentive staff and romantic atmosphere.
Stopped here for lunch on a drive through Portugal and wow! This place is beautiful, so many incredible facades across this building. The surrounding forest is also incredible and the food was fantastic at the restaurant. Can't fault it. The scale of the place was appreciated until we had arrived either.

The hotel is very impressive from outside and the location is amazing. But it's not a 5 star hotel, maybe 3 stars The furniture in the rooms is very old, the rooms are small and no air conditioner and no mini bar. Restorarant is very good and food is delicious.
Anatoly G — Google review
Probably the most beautiful hotel you will ever stay in. Make sure to get early enough so you can dedicate 30 min or more to walk around the palace and gardens. Also be prepared to eat in the hotel's restaurant, (there is no immediate other choice) , which is actully good, but expensive. (60 €pp with 3 courses plus a glass of wine). Our only complaint is that the bed, though comfortable, was not big enough. But the experience as a whole is great.
רם ז — Google review
Have to pay €7 just to get onto the grounds. No doubt it is beautiful. They wouldn't let us in to get something to eat at the restaurant because there was a wedding scheduled. Why do they not tell you before you spent €7 getting on to the grounds? The gardens are not nearly as magnificent as they look in the pictures. There is a lot of dead shrubs. We are all very disappointed in this excursion.
Voda V — Google review
Our visit to the forest and hotel were absolutely wonderful. The property and architecture are spectacular. The main restaurant, however, was a little lacking in service. The empregada de mesa didn’t seem to remember who ordered what, and didn’t stop by to check on us mid-meal (which would have been great as we were out of drink!). I only mention this to help set restaurant expectations. Otherwise, it was 5-stars across the board.
John F — Google review
The hotel is beautiful situated in a national forest with many trails to hike. I felt that the room was a good price but dining was expensive. The rooms do not have wifi, it's only available in the bar and lobby. The TV in the room is a Smart TV but there's no wifi so no apps. Your choices if you want to watch TV is one of the 9 Portuguese channels. There is no music playing in the bar/ lounge which would have been nice. The hotel furnishings are lovely and represent the period of when the palace was built.
K C — Google review
a wonderful fairytale place where they have preserved the historical appearance. wonderful staff, good restaurant, nice old barman and a wonderful atmosphere. we had great luck to visit the royal wine cellar. thank you very much, we will definitely come back
Furazh S — Google review
A very unique experience. We loved our stay. Is it a luxury hotel? No, it’s not. But the price is also much more affordable than if it was a true 5-star. The atmosphere is unforgettable. We loved the architecture, the decor, the people and the gardens around. We didn’t have dinner, but enjoyed a bottle of 2001 Bucaco white at the bar. The breakfast was absolutely great. We hope to come back.

Different trekking levels. We did the circular one, about an hour and there are waterfalls. There is a small river beach and a small bar.

This is a true hidden gem! Tucked away near a big dam, this riverside spot is perfect for a hot summer day, way more refreshing! There’s a peaceful section along the riverbank with a small beach area and a café, ideal for relaxing and cooling off. But the real magic starts with the hiking trail. It’s mostly very accessible and takes you deeper along the river, where you’ll find more secluded spots, small waterfalls, and beautiful natural pools. If you enjoy landscape views like I do, follow the trail upward for stunning views of the dam and the surrounding hills, such a rewarding perspective! It’s quiet, scenic, and ideal for nature lovers. I’d 100% recommend stopping by if you’re anywhere nearby. One of the most unexpectedly beautiful places I visited in Portugal! 🏞️

A small forest river beach Dogs are banned from the beach area but ok on the boardwalk. Nice boardwalk though stunning scenery. Plenty of seating en-route. The first waterfall is an easy walk, beyond that requires some easy climbing but not suitable for less mobile walkers. Worth the effort if you can. Also worth arriving early; parking is limited. Cafe is a little loud, nice for a coffee but not worth eating. Unisex toilets by the consession. Road en-route is good but a little mountainous and plenty of evidence of accidents with the numerous crash barrier dents, so drive carefully.

It was great! When we were there (mid-May weekday) it was very quiet. We parked up & did the full loop following the wooden path & signs to the various waterfalls & swimming pools. We just kept going up & around & down & then up finally getting to a miradouro (view point) that had a double swing to sit on & chill admiring the view. We then went up the right hand side of the building & picked up the steps/footpath back to the carpark. A decent walk in a beautiful place...

Freeport Fashion Outlet

Shopping
Located just a 45-minute drive from Lisbon, Freeport Fashion Outlet is a sizable outlet center offering a wide range of upscale boutiques, shoe stores, and gift shops. With over 100 renowned brands like Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, and Carolina Herrera, shoppers can enjoy discounts of up to 70%. The outlet also provides convenient amenities such as shuttle services to and from Lisbon, a kids' area, and various dining options.
Now that was an amazing shopping experience. An open-air outlet is so much better than an indoor mall — you get a completely different vibe.

It’s a nice and pleasant drive, but I found the prices quite similar to the ones in Norway. Took my son about 20 minutes to get an ice scream scoop with only a table seated. Hard to understand Had problems with the tax free as not all workers are informed about the rules between Norway and European Union.

Nice complex, with easy access and ample parking. Many shops but not all have the same quality products as the normal shops on town. More outlet shops… prices are competitive if you look for deals. All in all not bad

Open-air outlet with a nice layout. I was expecting more summer clearance deals, but most stores were already preparing for the winter season. Still, it’s a pleasant spot to walk around, with a good mix of popular brands.

Such a hidden gem just outside of Lisbon! I spent two full days shopping here because it’s full of designer stores at really affordable prices that you wouldn’t get anywhere else. There are also clean bathrooms and places to eat so you can spend a lot of time.

I like this kind mall, you can enjoy outside and inside shops, maybe not all shops in my budget, but some of in very good price quality balance :)

Nice outdoor shopping center. Lots of stores from famous international brands, plus numerous local shops that we not familiar with. We went on a Monday and it was not at all crowded. In fact it was quiet and pleasent to walk around.

We were lucky it was a beautiful November day when we went to Freeport. I was a bit afraid as it rained the days prior and there are no covered passages in this place. To go from shop to shop, if it's raining, you will get wet. If it's hot, you will melt. But there are a lot of great shops with good, end of collection/season deals. It's worth a visit.

Mourisca Tide Mill

Mourisca Water Mill is a picturesque spot that's perfect for capturing Instagram-worthy photos. It's one of the four remaining mills in the Sado Estuary, surrounded by saltmarsh and salterns. The area also features remnants of old boats and a stilt harbor, adding to its charm. Nearby, you can savor delicious local honey from the gardens of Convento da Arrabida, a former monastery.
Came here on the gastronomic festivity of the same name. Given it doubles as a religious ceremony, we arrived just as mass was undergoing so it was a bit head to get in but nothing irregular when festivities occur here. Food was served by the various sports and religious associations, restaurant/tapas style, and since it was still mass it still took around 150-30 minutes to get the food ready to serve which is very much understandable. Weather was also pretty mild lower them the usual 38ish°C (26°C at noon) and made it a rather enjoyable time. All in all festivities make this otherwise calm nature reserve a small hustle and bustle of mostly old people and booze one can easily get in if you know any of them, otherwise you're mostly here for the food at lunch and dinner and or some artist you like or association you support, otherwise you're not gonna enjoy it.

Cute place for a nice little walk, wouldn't recommend being there for more than 2 hours, 2 hours is good enough to relax, watching the stunning views and have a good cup of coffee by the water. Recommend going when there are birds to sight see.

Nice and cozy, but very small, don't expect to find a nice table in the shade on the hot summer days. Better for a spring walk

Really worth the visit. The building is quite interesting and there is a nice café, but we most enjoyed the bird watching and walking around the salt fields. Bring binoculars if you have a pair!

Nice place transformed in a small museum to preserve the memory of its past, when it was important in mowing cereals by the use of tides flow… there is also a small cafe, with ideal atmosphere for a short rest stop! Overall highly recommended!

Birdwatching paradise in the Sado River estuary. When the tide goes out the wetlands become muddy with trapped fish that the birds feast on. The highlight is the wild flamingos. The Milho de maré is preserved skewing how they used the riding tide streets to turn the grist mill to grind grain. Nice coffeehouse.

Old water mill converted to a museum. Good area to relax and enjoy some drinks and food/pastries. Birdwatching nearby and also by boat tour.
