Lighthouses
Start Point Lighthouse, situated on the Start Point peninsula in Devon, England, is a striking Gothic-style structure that has been guiding ships through the perilous waters of Start Bay since its construction in 1836. Although not accessible to the public year-round, it opens its doors to visitors during the summer months. The lighthouse offers breathtaking coastal views and an opportunity to witness a colony of seals basking on the rocks nearby.
Start Point Lighthouse may be closed when we went, but the beauty of the surrounding area more than made up for it. The coastal hiking trails along the cliffs are stunning, offering breathtaking views at every turn. The hike is moderately challenging, but worth it for the scenery alone. We were lucky enough to spot a couple of seals along the way, which was a real highlight. If you're after a peaceful walk with incredible coastal views, this is the place to go!
Purvi — Google review
We visited the lighthouse out of season so could only walk down the 3/4 mile of tarmacked vehicle track from the cliff top public car park to the gates of the lighthouse compound. The lighthouse is still operational, operated by trinity house who allow the public access on very limited days during the summer only. The two former keepers cottages are rented out as holiday let's. Views are stunning as was the wildlife along the way.
Andy V — Google review
Nice walk down to the lighthouse from the car park. Unfortunately, you can't get that close to the lighthouse because there are locked gates. There are some beautiful views all around the surrounding area and good walks along the SW coat path.
Steve — Google review
This was such a perfect little hike. It wasn’t busy at all, which made it really peaceful. The lighthouse itself was closed when we went, but the walk was still completely worth it and you can still get a great view of the lighthouse from the trail. A nice, quiet spot to enjoy nature.
Sarah — Google review
"Start Point in South Devon is one of the most exposed peninsulas on the English Coast, running sharply almost a mile into the sea on the South side of Start Bay near Dartmouth. Start Point Lighthouse at the end of the headland, has guided vessels in passage along the English Channel for over 150 years. The walk up to Start Point Lighthouse is one of the best coastal walks in South Devon, along the South West Coast Path. The dramatic cliffs and stunning coastal landscape is breathtaking - and can be done as a short walk or part of a longer trek across the Coast Path." Beautiful place 😍
Tom G — Google review
Rugged coastline and great walks/scenery. Unfortunately the lighthouse was closed to the public on the day I visited but all the same a wonderful place to visit overlooking the "lost" village of Hallsands.
Len E — Google review
Beautiful lighthouse in scenic coastal setting, an easy 15 min walk down to the lighthouse from the car park which is £5 per car for 1 day, reduction after 3.30pm, we went after 5pm and it was free

Loved the view , unfortunately coulnt up close to see it but still amazing to see

Haldon Belvedere (Lawrence Castle)

Mentioned on

Sights & Landmarks
Haldon Belvedere, also known as Lawrence Castle, is a Georgian-era castle located in the South Devon countryside. It offers a classically styled apartment with a kitchen and provides great views of the surrounding area including Exeter, the Exe Estuary, and Dartmoor National Park. The landmark is well-maintained and offers stunning panoramic views from its roof terrace.
It was shut when I last visited, I have been inside on previous visits. You don't need a lot of time to go round it, maybe an hour, but it's interesting and the views are worth the effort. Good on the people who volunteer to keep Haldon Belvedere maintained. Do check opening times if you want to go inside. There are lots of walks around the woods nearby as well as a nearby visitor centre - which is currently being improved so has restricted parking. I've only uploaded one photo from my last visit - it's from the bottom of the tower - just think on the difference from the top - which a 365 view.

Great views nice building lovely inside, but suffering a bit of vandalism which is disappointing to see. Well worth the walk up. Great venue for weddings and they stay!
Dave H — Google review
Outstanding both metaphorically and literally! Our stay here was exceptional. Breathtaking views, a fascinating tower, and highly efficient support through the whole booking process. A lifetime memory. Thank you.

Excellent views. Nice little tower castle. Pleasant walk through woodland
Jane M — Google review
Quietly set in well maintained grounds with stunning views from most positions. Accessed near a carpark with a bit of a climb upwards but worth every step. Nice wooden seating once outside and makes a great photo opportunity.
Matthew B — Google review
Gorgeous piece of local history, beautiful views included. A must for a visit.
Simon W — Google review
Visited Halton Belvedere a few times when it’s open and closed. Even from ground level the view over Exeter and towards Dartmoor is worthwhile- from the top of the Belvedere is spectacular. The inside is small but worth seeing and when there’s been guides to tell the history it comes to life.
Graham R — Google review
Lovely place for a walk or for a wedding. Commanding views over the countryside and great walks through the adjoining Haldon Forest. My own son had his wedding there as it looked like their "Fairy Tale Castle" ! Worth a visit especially on its open days when you can go up the tower.

A truly special and beautiful place in the UK. Swipe right for some more gorgeous photos of our little adventure to Bolt Head (rock formation). We used our little folding bike and had to park it by the National Trust entrance in order to walk down the coastal path. We saw some small garden snakes 😯 which we swiftly avoided 🏃‍♀🐍 The views of the harbour and sea were outstanding!
Vanessa P — Google review
Fabulous circular walk from Overbeck’s National Trust car park to bolt head. Parking was £6 all day. Great views! A moderate walk with undulating hills
Fran U — Google review
Great wide ranging view and an easy clifftop path with an option for a circular route. Just beware, there are big drops. Dog friendly, car parking is £3 all day, free to National Trust.

Fantastic loop walk from Overbecks National Trust Gardens. They open 2nd April. Blossom on Magnolia looked amazing even from a distance.!
Andrew M — Google review
Wild,wonderful and beautiful
Keith N — Google review
Fabulous walk, take ferry to South Sands Salcombe, walk up by Overbecks. On a good day superb views over the estuary, can be quite tricky in parts and need good head for heights. Parts of the walk were cut out of the rock to enable WW1 injured soldiers to get to Overbecks via boat from below, when Overbecks was used as a Hospital. If you 'like' this review please give me a tick ✅♥ Thank you...

Amazing views from this rugged landscape. The walk up from South Beach was fantastic with an outstanding part of the SWCP being simply breathing in more than one sense of the word.

Overbeck's Garden, located near Salcombe in Devon, is a must-visit National Trust property. The former home of the eccentric Edwardian inventor Otto Overbeck, it boasts an intriguing collection of maritime artifacts and eclectic inventions. The stunning subtropical gardens offer breathtaking sea views and are filled with exotic plants that thrive in the South Devon climate. This hidden paradise also features a quirky house with fascinating collections, making it a unique and captivating destination for visitors.
Beautiful place and well worth the hairpin bends on the way up. The views are breathtaking and the gardens are well thought out. The mrytle trees are stunning and the agapanthus are glorious. Loved the bespoke handrails throughout gardens and the banana garden is like being in a tropical country. If you need any inspiration for your garden...go!
Josephine T — Google review
Great visit, not very large but quite unique with some of the plants and the views are stunning. Lots of different paths to take that weave in and out of different gardens with varying focuses. We have young children, easier to carry, pram would be difficult.
Jamie H — Google review
Beautiful gardens. Still lots of flowers even in October. Catering just outside the entrance excellent. Quite a narrow winding road to get there but very worthwhile.
Val C — Google review
Really wonderful afternoon here. The gardens are beautiful, lots of lovely flowers and palm trees. Plenty of birds to see. The gardens are pretty much all dog friendly apart from the banana garden and front lawn otherwise they can go everywhere and there is water bowls at the entrance for them. There is a lovely little cafè. I would highly recommend a visit here.
Bec — Google review
Lovely gardens and interesting foliage. The house was closed when we visited, but we enjoyed the most magnificent views and walks. The volunteers were friendly and welcoming.
Twin C — Google review
Very nice well kept gardens with many exotics. Good walks/trails with some lovely views over the surrounding countryside.
Len E — Google review
Always a treat coming to this garden. A lovely walk from Salcombe past North and South Sands along the narrow and steep roads! (there's a lovely footpath getting out of the top of Salcombe if you can find it!!) The gardens are very well kept and beautiful. We have been many times and will come back many more!
Alex L — Google review
Beautiful National Trust gardens overlooking South Sands bay. The staff are very friendly and knowledgable, and dogs on leads are allowed into the gardens. There’s a cafe by the entrance that serves really nice coffee / cold drinks, and food (focaccia sandwiches, cakes, decent vegan options etc!). There is parking just outside, and access to the coastal path direct from the garden. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies is a wildlife center located near Dartmoor National Park, offering an immersive experience with various species of otters and tropical butterflies. Visitors can observe native British otters, playful Asian short-clawed otters, and large North American river otters in specially designed glass enclosures. The center also houses terrapins, leaf-cutting ants, and features a humid butterfly house where guests can learn about tropical butterflies.
We had a fantastic time at the sanctuary, It was a visually stunning and enriching experience filled with fascinating exhibits and a wonderful ambience. The garden is stunning, with beautiful flowers and relaxing pathways to stroll along. I loved the pond, watching the colourful fish swim by and the turtles. Overall, it's a wonderful place to spend a day exploring and enjoying nature and the otters. If you are lucky you might even see the train passing by The visit left us with lasting memories and a desire to return. It was truly a highlight of our day!
Oohlalalisa — Google review
Took my granddaughters here last week. They loved being in the butterfly house, especially when the butterflies landed on them and sat on their hands for ages. There are many to see flying in amongst the plants. There are also terrapins and an iguana which is billed as Izzy the green iguana but is bright orange! The otters however were a bit of a disappointment, even at feeding time. The keeper just put the food into the enclosure and it was not easy to see what the otters were doing. The girls got bored with it very quickly and went back to the butterfly house. There is a small cafe outside and you have to show your tickets again to get back in the butterfly house. There are only snacks of pasties or sausage rolls, but they were delicious. Ice creams and beverages also available. There is a larger eatery in the station area. Nice gift shop, lots of things for young ones, but not much for over 10s. Also items for adults. We spent 3 hours there so definitely a place worth visiting for a morning or afternoon but not a whole day.
Jenny W — Google review
A fantastic experience for all ages. The butterfly sanctuary is almost unique - there are few places that allow people to walk directly through an open habitat to find what they can. Two warnings - it is significantly more humid than the local area, and it can smell of the ripe/rotting fruit they feed on. The otters are beautiful and clearly well cared for, with platforms for viewing them above ground and in the nests below. I highly recommend arriving for feeding times to receive the guided tour of the different animals and ensure you see them at their most active. The entire experience was delightful and left children with new favourite animals
Hjikle — Google review
Wonderful visit for Halloween. It is a small place but well worth a visit. I got gifted the otter experience and I adored it! Only downside was I couldn’t get more pictures of me with the otters (we had fishy hands quite rightly so and the keeper had to do the talk with lots of questions) but thankfully a lovely member of the public took one for us. Hand feeding them was a dream come true. Staff are lovely and clear they take good care of the animals. We were very lucky in that 2 weeks ago they received smooth coated otters which are my favourite! Thank you otters and butterflies.
Keira — Google review
We booked to be an otter keeper for a few hours. Such a privilege to be up close and feed these beautiful creatures. Would highly recommend this interactive experience of a lifetime. Oh, and the butterfly house was good too.
Lisa W — Google review
Took my girlfriend here for an otter feeding experience as she loves otters. Absolutely brilliant. The staff are polite and the lady who took us around is very knowledgeable. Otters seem very happy and well looked after. The butterfly house is very nice too. Definitely worth a visit.
Owen M — Google review
As a family we had an amazing time at the sanctuary, even in the rain. We done the otter experience which we highly recommend and would do again and again. They are adorable! There was a lot more involved in the experience than I thought it would be. Thank you again Lilly, we had an amazing time. The children are already asking to go again.

Was pleasantly surprised, definitely better than I was thinking its going to be. We came in time for 11am feeding and it was lovely to hear otter's stories. Lovely butterfly farm with lots of butterflies around. Will visit again.

Excellent all the way ! We enjoyed the Sunday afternoon tea experience ....fantastic quality . Great selection of finger sandwiches and savouries , freshly baked scones, and cakes. The staff were very attentive and friendly but not intrusive. The steam train experience is lovely as always . 10/10

A wonderful place to visit if you like Steam Trains. A pleasant ride and experience. We did not book and there was plenty of seats as there were several carriages. The museum has plenty of exhibits to look at. The shop is big and they have a large cafe. Great selection of tasty treats though note it's card only. Parking was not too bad.
Abi S — Google review
A wonderful heritage steam railway line with a brilliant and well stocked model shop at Buckfastleigh Station. The volunteers and staff were friendly and knowledgeable. They helped people on and off the train with a smile. I enjoyed having a walk around the station, yard and the small museum at Buckfastleigh. The steam train ride to Totnes was a gentle trundle through the countryside pulled by a GWR Pannier tank loco and along the river Dart. A really enjoyable day out, if you're in the area check it out. I loved it but I do love trains!
4468 — Google review
Lovely day out on this heritage railway with views along the Dart Valley. Interesting exhibits at all 3 stations and a nice cafe and gift shop at Buckfastleigh. All the volunteers had smiles on their faces and clearly enjoyed what they were doing. Not a criticism but a suggestion, there was little or no signage at Buckfastleigh to direct you to the town centre If anyone wanted to go there. However on the Monday we visited, everywhere except one pub was closed.
Eric P — Google review
Avoiding a wet drizzle day, lovely steam train ride with a mini museum history thanks for our day out...... 🚂 Tip: (if you have BR Pass, need to buy at kiosk as you can't purchase online).... Bacon 🥓 and sausage roll and tea was yummy for this wet day
Lille C — Google review
Wife and I enjoyed the ploughman's lunch which was fantastic. The food was excellent and the service friendly and well orchestrated on the 1hr 30 steam train round trip. You can also use your ploughmans lunch tickets on the line all day. A small museum is worth the visit as well as the shop and cafe.
Darren G — Google review
A great experience which put a smile on my face. It's an expensive day out for two people that wish to get off at the two stations available = £25 each. If you want to take a dog this is also extra. I've added the price list to the images. Overall it's a great experience which last about 40 minutes each way. There's cheaper tickets if you want to avoid the beer festival option for ten pounds each way without stop offs. Most staff are volunteers and very polite/passionate. The schedule is more frequent that gwr or the regular train service which should be explored it's the track length that limits the travel.

We were able to cuddle the little piglets and rabbits, bottle feed the goats and feed other animals. The views were so nice as well. We honestly had the best time walking around and seeing it all. Great atmosphere. Thank you SO much ❤️

Absolutely brilliant place to visit! We found Pennywell farm when searching for somewhere to visit en route to our holiday park. Even on a wet Monday we still had a fantastic time. There’s plenty of animals to feed in the dry. Feed was available to purchase at the entrance/shop. The goats will definitely make you giggle. From the incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable staff giving talks, to holding a piglet. Both children aged 2yrs old were fully engaged and made to feel welcomed by staff. There’s also plenty of hand washing stations located around the site. The views from the top of the viewing tower give you a 360 panorama of picturesque Scenery which all compliment its truly beautiful location. We loved it so much we returned on the Friday, on our way home from our holiday. If you have the opportunity to pay Pennywell farm a visit it’s well worth it! Thank you to the team at Pennywell farm for building something truly beautiful for many generations to enjoy and making us feel so welcomed!

We went as a mixed family party of ten, age range from Great Nan at 76 to the youngest just a few months. Pumpkin Day was fantastic, the weather was cold but the rain held off. Cuddles with mice, rabbits, guinea pigs and pigs indoors was extremely well organised and overseen by friendly, helpful staff with complete emphasis on the animals welfare. Same for the pig racing and we were very happy and impressed. Food available was pretty good, but difficult to find something for my 9yr old grandson,as he has very severe allergies to milk, cheese, gluten and even soy and there really wasn't anything he could have. cross contamination couldn't be ruled out. I understand that they can't cater for these problems, but might i suggest that at least a few gluten free with vegan cheese pizzas could be kept in the freezer for people with these sorts of problems?. Then they'd always be able to offer something. It's hard when he has to always take his own food and can't join in with everyone else. That said, they were as helpful as they could be and did have fruit juices he could have. We thoroughly enjoyed our day out together seeing the animals and playing in the play areas, taking photos and making memories. Came away with a few unusual pumpkins and plenty of smiles. Thanks for a lovely day.

Absolutely wonderful experience. We came to visit as a way of celebrating our 9th wedding anniversary. Grounds are well kept and animals well loved. Every member of staff was smiling and it was obvious they enjoyed working there, they had a genuine friendly manner. Mark led the activities all day and he had just the right amount of enthusiasm whilst not being annoying. Our almost 2 year old had a great day, not sure if we would be happy to pay an extra near £20 for him once he turns 2 though, but it was definitely worth the price paid for 2 adults. If you can afford it then make sure you go as it’s a great day out!

We had the best day at PennyWell farm the staff and animal experiences where amazing, Absolutely loved it, it was half term so was busy but well organised the Pig race was great. The only negative thing was the bouncy castles, feel you need someone supervising them during busy periods, lots of older children that shouldn’t be in there bing boisterous and dangerous really I pulled my little one off in the end and I could just see someone getting really hurt. I know the parents should be watching but unfortunately people don’t and a little one is going to get really hurt. Other then that we had the best day all the experiences were great really enjoyed the pumpkin farm and marshmallow roasting nice little extra thing to do. Thank you PennyWell we will be back again

A fun packed day out for Family, Couples or solo! This place has a whole heap of activities dotted throughout the day, a new one every 30 minutes! It has a huge variety of animals and for a small additional fee you can feed the animals. There are also some gorgeous views overlooking the countryside around it and a 'lookout' tower enabling you to get higher and see more. It has a variety of confectionary stands and a cafe offering a selection of cakes and drinks or if you fancy something different a pizza stand in one of the barns. The animals are friendly and they even offer a cuddling experience for some adorable little creatures such as pigs, guinea pigs and rabbits. If you're looking for a fun day out I recommend you don't miss this one!

Amazing event, we took our professional camera, pumpkin patch was a perfect spot for autumnal photoshoot. So many attractions if your kid is 3 years old and plus. Very cute fluffy rabbits, the piggy race was so funny, the sweetest animal cuddles, beautiful horses. Yummy hot-dog with pretzel bun and sauerkraut. You can also get a pasty, sausage roll, nice coffee, brownies etc.

First time going to pennywell farm and pumpkin nights did not disappoint. It was an event enjoyed by all even the eldest said it was one of the best days for her. The event had a very sort of American feel to it which was cool ( and made me think of teen horror but just me) it's not scary for kids. Would of liked to see a maze to help the time go think that would be awesome but amazing time

Sights & Landmarks
Buckfast Abbey, located in Buckfastleigh, is a historic site dating back over a thousand years. Originally built as an abbey for Benedictine monks in 1018, it has undergone various periods of prosperity and decline. The current buildings showcase late nineteenth and early twentieth-century architecture, blending period design with contemporary elements. The abbey features well-maintained sensory and lavender gardens, offering visitors a tranquil retreat.
Fab place full of interesting architecture. Lots of information around. The staff are incredibly polite and helpful and if you want some buckfast wine then head to the gift shop. The gardens are pretty and the manicured lawns are plentiful for the kids to run some energy off. Its all free too.

We stopped at Buckfast Abbey after collecting our youngest son from a sailing trip in Brixham. We were looking for somewhere interesting (and free!) to enjoy our picnic lunch—and we’re so glad we chose to visit. Parking and entry were both free, though donations are welcomed. The grounds are beautifully maintained, with immaculate lawns, colourful gardens, and plenty of benches and picnic tables. There are lots of clear and informative signs explaining the features of the gardens and the history of the buildings. The Abbey itself is stunning, with impressive architecture and a peaceful atmosphere. The vibrant stained glass window was a real highlight. We ended our visit in the gift shop, which had a great selection of items to browse and buy. Well worth a visit—we’re really glad we made the decision to stop here!

It's amazing experience. Worth visiting any time of the year. I agree with what all other visitors have experienced. Polite staff and class above other Abbeys. Congratulations to all involved to create such an amazing gf experience for us.

Lovely place to visit, very interesting. Stained glass is something to behold. Gift shop is great bought some fudge and chocolate that father Francis had made. Highly recommend the cheesecake in the restaurant.

Beautiful Abbey and grounds, accommodation really lovely. Unfortunately on Sunday 9th Nov, seeking communion in remembrance of our Lord and Saviour. We were REFUSED communion because we were not catholics. I am a born again Christian and attend church every Sunday , I felt VERY disappointed. Not being advised of this before requesting communion.

Buckfast Abbey, on the fringes of the Dartmoor National Park is one of these rarest of visitor attractions with both free parking and free to visit (although donations are welcome!). The story behind the rebuild of the abbey is fascinating with it's pristine condition due to it's relatively young age Vs other more recognised abbeys. There's a large and well stocked restaurant and a good sized shop selling everything from locally made beer and wine to various religious artifacts, plus some pleasant but small gardens. We really enjoyed our time here, particularly the "Do walk on the grass signs"....a nice departure from the norm.

A beautiful Abbey in a peaceful location (although I did visit at 6pm). The architecture is wonderful, and there are some small gardens near the Abbey, tucked away behind hedging, making them feel like cosy pockets. The Millennium garden is interesting, with a beautiful stag sculpture. Plenty of eateries around, toilets and a gift shop.
Tino N — Google review
Visited for the first time in July 25. We arrived late in the day and purely by chance. When we entered the gift shop had just closed but we were late. The Abbey and grounds were still open and it was free so rhat was a bonus. We visited the Abbey and had a walk inside. A stunning architectural building. There were worshippers within the building so we were sensitive to this regarding photography and our noise level. There wer 2 ushers outside and they were happy for us to walk in and invited us to join the service too. We visited the beautiful gardens with the arrays of flowers, plants and herbs. We will need to revisit when the gift shop and restaurant are open.

Located in the charming Hope Cove, The Hope & Anchor is a rustic-chic pub that offers comfortable rooms and a cottage with stunning sea views. This coastal gem provides a warm welcome to travelers seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Guests can enjoy locally sourced ingredients in hearty meals and freshly caught seafood while taking in the picturesque surroundings.
Fab pub, friendly and sophisticated in equal measure. We arrived in the middle of Storm Amy and in addition to serving us a great meal with good wine we were sent home with a complimentary hospitality pack for breakfast the next morning. We came back two nights later for another lovely dinner (especially good chips and puddings). Our server Nyx was attentive and knowledgeable and made us very welcome. Hope to get a table for Wednesday quiz night!

Food. Great. Place. Great. Service. Poor. Full of young people. All they did was fuss over a dog when we were waiting for our drinks to be ordered. But the view was fantastic and staying in Hope Cove was great. We went to The Crabshell, the same partner, was great (make sure to see that review) but this was poor and they weren't even apologetic. Just sitting chatting while we waited for an hour. RIDICULOUS!

Had a fabulous visit with my mum. We sat on the terrace in the afternoon sun overlooking the bay as the sun went down. We both had the fish with skin on fries - beautifully fresh and tasty. Mine was gluten free and absolutely gorgeous (not used to saying this for gluten free food!). All of the staff were professional and friendly but Melissa especially was so helpful and thoughtful with my mum who had some mobility challenges today. Thank you.

The pub really couldn’t be nearer the sea. It’s a lovely location. The staff were so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was delicious too. I had the cabin room which was a suite so was very pleased with that too. I loved how people’s dogs were so welcome. Often pubs say that but just tolerate them in practice. Not here, they really are very welcome.

We had a wonderful meal at the Hope and Anchor, 4 adults and a toddler. All the food was delicious, the proper pie was great and the desserts enormous. Very nice spritzes too. Max and Lari who served us were both lovely, especially with our toddler and had excellent drinks recommendations (not for the toddler!). Great place for a walk along the beach after. Would thoroughly recommend.

We had a wonderful evening at the Hope and Anchor in Hope Cove. We ordered the sea bass from the specials board and it was absolutely delicious – fresh, perfectly cooked, and full of flavour. We were lucky enough to sit outside and enjoy the most beautiful sunset, which made the whole experience even more special. The team were exceptionally friendly and welcoming, as always, which is one of the many reasons we love coming here. A fantastic spot – highly recommend!

I had such a fantastic time at the Hope & Anchor in Hope Cove. The setting is absolutely stunning, with gorgeous views and a lovely atmosphere that makes you feel instantly relaxed. What really stood out to me, though, was the service – Anna behind the bar and Eden (server ) both went above and beyond to make my visit special. Friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, they made sure everything was spot on from start to finish. It’s rare to find that level of care and professionalism, and it made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommend this place – I will definitely be back!

Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the charming town of Okehampton, Okehampton Castle stands as a testament to medieval history. This remarkable motte and bailey castle was built between 1068 and 1086 following the Norman Conquest, strategically positioned to guard vital routes between Devon and Cornwall. Once a formidable fortress until the 13th century, it later transformed into an opulent hunting lodge for its wealthy owners.
Okehampton Castle in Devon is a fascinating ruin with a rich history. Originally built in the 11th century as a Norman motte-and-bailey castle, it later became a luxurious fortified manor house in the late medieval period. Perched on a hill, it offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Visitors can explore the remains of the keep, chapel, and great hall, which provide insights into the lives of its medieval occupants. The site also inspired poets like William Wordsworth, adding a literary connection to its historical significance. Visited with my bike. Had the audio guide to guide me around.
Anthony C — Google review
On my way back, I passed through Okehampton. Saw a castle sign and thought, why not. I'm glad I did as this was a historical treasure dating back over 800 years. Wonderful scenery all around. Not many people here, so I literally had the place to myself. Can't complain, worth the visit.
Carlton K — Google review
A very interesting place to visit. Audio to hear which is worth having as you go around the remains of the castle. Impressive as to how much of the castle is there. Beautiful views and also a lovely walk around it into woods and a meadow with seating at the castle and picnic area. Nice lady serving at the booth for the entrance fee and souvenirs.
Libby P — Google review
Surprisingly interesting place although difficult to find. Could do with some more directions please. Great view from the top and how some of the castle remains standing is amazing. Steep drops though with no barriers so be careful with children!
Mark A — Google review
Well, it would have been a better experience if they were actually open. They were unusually closed due to operational issues whatever that means . Regardless, it is still a beautiful site. We managed to find a beautiful path to walk back to town on which was significantly better than walking on the road. I will have to google more info on the castle as it is very old and has a huge amount of history behind it. Nice steps leading up to the main building at the top of the hill.
Colin D — Google review
The site is owned by English Heritage and the entrance fee was well worth it. It's quite a steep climb to the top of the site, where the view is impressive. The different rooms and walls of the castle are very interesting. There is a car park approximately 100 yards away and a disabled parking area located just opposite the main entrance to the site.

The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, England is a modern art deco-style attraction that opened in 1998. It's the UK's largest aquarium and part of the Ocean Conservation Trust, focusing on research and conservation. The aquarium features a variety of marine life from Devon to the tropics, including fish, sharks, turtles, and jellyfish. Visitors can enjoy feeding sessions, an underwater tunnel experience, and a cafe with panoramic harbor views.
The most fantastic Aquarium I have ever been to which includes the largest fish tank in the UK. It even has a small sunken bi-plane within the tank, (which tells you how large we are talking here) The sharks, and massive sea turtle (called Friday) were incredible. I have not been to another aquarium in the UK that includes sharks! Staff have an incredible amount of knowledge about the animals in the aquarium all the way down to their behaviours and how each of them interact with the divers that feed them. At various points you get to see the divers go into the water. This is by far the largest and most impressive aquarium I have seen, if you are into your marine animals this opportunity is certainly not to be missed! Definitely check this place out if you are ever visiting Plymouth!

We visited this place with our 5 year old son and were a bit disappointed that extra attractions, like soft play, were unavailable. We enjoyed the big aquarium and watching the team of reaserchers at the lab. If you have an autistic child like we do I'll advice you to be there first in the morning as it becomes busy later on. The tickets can be used for the whole day which is fantastic as we didn't have a chance to see everything in our first round. Our son just runs like a Flash😆 Lovely, friendly staff. X
E M — Google review
A great place to visit for young and old. You can spend a few hours just wandering around at your own pace looking at the vast array of fish, turtles and sharks. My children loved this place. This is my second time here and would definitely return for a third time.
A K — Google review
2nd visit to the Aquarium using our yearly tickets which is a good plus when the buy a ticket. No wait to enter. You start at the top and self guided tour. Good displays with good information about the creatures. Easily spend 2 hours in there plus more if you choose to have food which we didn't so cannot give you information on that. Very family orientated and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Large shop on exit with varying gifts, mementos for all budgets .
Mark P — Google review
Lots of information and big fish. We took about an hour to go around, we did not read the information boards which could easily add another hour. There are a couple of places to sit and watch which is a pleasant way to spend some time. They offer a year's entry for the price of a day; £26 per adult, which is quite pricey if you only visit once. However visit again within the year and it becomes fantastic value!
Jason H — Google review
I have read the reviews before I went to this aquarium so I knew what to expect. To be honest, the staff are quite friendly and helpful, and I wish I could give it a higher point, but the fish tanks are too small, and the so-called biggest fish tank could have come with a bit more fish or more impressive fish. I think perhaps because the major visitors of this aquarium are kids and their families these days, they stick too many stickers with words and scientific facts on the wall, yet put too few fish to see. The best room is the room with the lecture, the curvy glass helps us to see the animals more clearly. The lecturer was very enthusiastic when she talked about sharks, rays, and the green turtle. I do not mind that they make the Aquarium more educational, but I hope they prioritize the fish rather than people. Whether bigger or smaller fish, they need more space to swim. For the size and the reputation of this museum, they could have done better.
Etheria H — Google review
Visited the the National Marine Aquarium in October half term and it was really busy as you would expect. We were interested in visiting here as is billed as the country's largest aquarium, housing over 5,000 animals in four different areas of the building. It also boasts the UK's deepest fish tank that holds up to 2.5 million litres of water and it was officially opened in 1998. We had already booked tickets on line, but still had to queue 15 minutes to gain entry. The exhibits were nicely spaced out and you can view the enormous fish tank on the different floors. We probably spent a couple of hours before leaving. The staff were helpful and it supports a charity dedicated to marine conservation.
Villan C — Google review
So much too see. There was 2 school parties here when I went and they looked intrigued by the big tank while they were at a talk. I loved it,my daughter in law showed us the way luckily else I'd have been going in circles. Didn't see any seahorses which were there last time and the sharks were not that big but my fave were the mantas and stingrays. There were some really big starfish,a turtle and lots of strange looking fish and anemones. Got a years pass on buying entry tickets so will be returning soon.

Very busy weekend in Plymouth, students arriving at the university and Seafest at the Barbican. I had booked but the earliest table available was 20.30. We turned up early in case there was a table and there was, a very nice corner table. Started off with gins and tonic because we were in a distillery. Skipped the starters and had very good mains followed by excellent desserts. Service was attentive, friendly and efficient. The atmosphere was great with lots of people having a relaxed and enjoyable time. Difficult to fault this restaurant.
Bruce J — Google review
A real gem in the South-West! We have visited Barbican Kitchen 3-4 times now, on our visit to see family in Plymouth, from London. We always make a point to have a date night here. It is our most favourite place to eat, even amongst the Michelin-starred restaurants we have been to. We just love the cosy, unstuffy, relaxed atmosphere of this restaurant. The ingredients are always the best quality, seasonal and fresh- this is reflected on the pleasantly ever-changing menu. We love trying different plates and love the recommendations from the staff. The prices for plates are more than fair - they reflect the quality of the cooking, the ingredients and the service. We know that if this were in London, we'd likely pay more than double our bill for the same food! The variety of options are truly exciting. Portion sizes are just perfect, if not generous. There is something for everybody and every 'food-mood' you are in. My partner has thoroughly enjoyed their beef burgers and loves their grilled steak options! I have a personal affinity for the 'catch of the day' and the other fish dishes on offer. I also often find myself dreaming about my next encounter with their sticky toffee pudding... A special mention must be made for the staff that work here (won't name names for privacy reasons). Attentive, not intrusive or pressurising and incredibly welcoming. Always vigilant of when we need a top-up of water! We love how friendly, polite and genuinely informative the staff are here. They go over and beyond to make sure that you are well looked after. They are the real gems of this place along with the exquisite food; just seriously lovely people that you want to see again. Well done, Tanner Brothers! See you soon!

Restaurant is located in the Plymouth Gin Distellery, one stairs up and you will find the restaurant. We came in without a reservation (Thursday evening) and there was plenty of space for the two of us. The menu has some great options, try the focaccia and the honey glazed chorizo, perfect for a table of four as a starter. The service is great, the food tastes wonderfull and off course you can order here some gin and tonics from the Distellery.

Exquisite meal here last night, which also happened to be my first visit at The Barbican Kitchen. It is on the pricier side, however the quality of the food is amazing and very well presented which makes it worth it. I’d recommend the caramelised onion and goats cheese tart and butternut squash risotto…. both were divine. The truffle and parmesan fries are also a MUST - they’re the best I’ve had! Service was friendly and attentive, and the restaurant itself was cosy and inviting. Highly recommend if you’re looking for somewhere just that little bit more special.

I accidentally called this number looking for a different company of the same name. The woman who answered was abusive and extremely rude towards me and my company - she has never met or spoken to me before and knows nothing of my business but felt she was in a position to criticise me personally and professionally. I wouldn't stay here and would advise others to avoid it as well if this is the way she feels is reasonable to speak to entire strangers.

Plymouth Gin Distillery, situated in the historic Barbican area, is the oldest working gin distillery in England. The building itself dates back to the early 1400s and features a medieval hall known as the Refectory, which boasts a remarkable hull-shaped timber roof from 1431. Visitors can partake in pre-booked tours that provide insight into the craft of producing Plymouth Gin and indulge in tutored tastings of their renowned range.
FANTASTIC!! Every single second. Pippa our guide was the most amazing woman and made the experience second to none. We booked on to the masters upgraded tour and it was honestly the most enjoyable afternoon I can recall. I would highly recommend paying the extra for the experience we received. Thank you to Pippa for hosting us. You are a gem to the company

An absolute must-do! Really enjoyed the distilling tour and tasting experience, Kirsty was an excellent guide and kept us entertained and engaged throughout. I will never view or taste gin in the same way, very enjoyable and excellent value for money. Highly recommend!

Another distillery visited. I got my pin badge and a navy strength bottle of gin to go in my bar. Thank you very much. Some great details on the building. Lots of history. Amazingly strong cocktails. Hubby loved the whisky he had in the bar, he wishes he'd of taken the name. If we ever visit Plymough again, we will definitely drop in.

I went on an upgraded masters tour with five friends and family yesterday and it was just exceptional. It's such a fun experience. Our guide Karly was so knowledgeable and engaging. We had a wonderful tour, learnt about the history of gin, had a gin tasting, made our own gin with an amazing array of botanicals to choose from and had two cocktails in the beautiful upstairs bar, which is also steeped in history. A magical day I would highly recommend. What a treat!
Laura H — Google review
I’d give this a miss. I’ve done a fair few distillery tours and this was by far the worst one I’ve ever been too. It’s relatively informative but the tour guide we had was rough. She basically yelled at us the entire time like she was leading an outdoor river cruise with no microphone. There were “jokes” in the script and it felt almost like she was trained to do a high energy tour, but has been imprisoned here for decades and it has drained all life and energy out of her. So now, she regurgitates the words but emotionless. Like an animatronic animal from an 80s theme park. The tour finished in about 40 minutes. The bar is fit out beautifully and the bartender was lovely. The gift shop was underwhelming and was manned by two ladies in the middle of a d&m and were all consumed. I get that these tours are feeders to buy more stuff (booze, bric-à-brac, etc) but whoever is in charge needs to revamp this entire process.

We had some time in Plymouth, so wanted to do the Distillery Tour, which was really good, an hour with the very entertaining Kirsty, talking us thru the history of Plymouth Gin and the Distillery, very educational learning about the botanicals, then finished off with a refreshing G&T in the bar, well worth the £15
Neil S — Google review
We went on the Upgraded Gin Tour, explaining the history of the building, the distillery and gin in general. Our guid was Karly, who was knowledgeable and enthusiastic throughout. We saw aspects and elements of the process and got to try making our own micro batches of gin, using some of their fantastic supply of botanical. On top of the different samples we tried on the tour there were drinks at the Refectory Bar afterwards. A brilliant day from start to finish!

Myself and my partner went for one of the distillery tours ran by Kirsty and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We both live in Plymouth and this was our first time on one of the tours. Kirsty was very informative and we feel like we have learnt about gin and the distilling process. The free drinks at the end were also a winner.

Theatre Royal Plymouth

Concerts & Shows
The Theatre Royal Plymouth is Britain's largest regional theatre, offering a varied programme in performance spaces like The Lyric. It was built in the Regency era and has undergone several transformations over the years. After a multi-million pound refurbishment, it reopened in 2013 with state-of-the-art facilities and showcased the award-winning show 'War Horse'. Located on Royal Parade, it's just a 10-minute walk from the University of Plymouth campus.
Theatre Royal Plymouth: A Cultural Gem in the South West Tucked into the heart of Plymouth, the Theatre Royal stands as one of the South West’s greatest cultural assets. It’s a venue that consistently punches above its weight—intimate in size but bold in ambition, attracting major touring productions that might otherwise skip the region entirely. Having seen The Devil Wears Prada and Kinky Boots The Musical here, it’s clear this theatre is doing something right. The programming is confident and contemporary, bringing in big names and crowd-pullers while maintaining a strong sense of accessibility. The layout is smart—great sightlines from almost every seat, and a sense of closeness to the stage that larger venues often lack. It’s that rare combination: a big-theatre experience in a setting that still feels personal. The building is well maintained, the staff are friendly and efficient, and everything runs smoothly—from the moment you walk through the doors to the final curtain call. In short, it’s not just a great theatre for Plymouth—it’s a major player in the UK’s regional arts scene. A true gem.

We came to watch Hamilton - what a fantastic show that is!! Interval was rather short though so no time to go toilets and get drinks… Just about got an icecream, but the lady (very friendly and helpful staff) had to reopen again!..

My first trip to the Theatre Royal was far from successful, but they corrected their error, which goes a long way in my book. Let me paint the scene. Your favourite show is touring the UK, & you have additional needs, plus some. You take time, 17 months before the show is even in your area to scope out the venue, finding the wheelchair accessible seat that suits your needs with theatre staff assisting. They won't let you try anywhere else, you trust them, after all. The big day comes, you arrive & find your seat isn't suitable due to the additional seats in your row. This is made worse by a gentleman next to you who leans forward, blocking your view as your seats are on the right side of the stage, so his body position really matters. Afterwards you speak to staff who show you the perfect seat downstairs that you never got to see. It works (just), & staff say the access team will email you. Ten days goes by, nothing. You reach out, because this matters to you & time is NOT on your side. A lovely lady from the access team reaches out, & states she saw you arriving & noted you wouldn't see anything that night. Instead of platitudes, she grabbed the bull by the horns & took responsibility, rebooking you on one of two dates available. The second attempt was MUCH better. I had a brilliant night & it was interesting comparing cast members from the two shows, weeks apart. You see, that is how it should be, owning errors & taking responsibility. No one is perfect, & mistakes happen, but action is much better than platitudes. Before leaving I took time to explore the changing places toilet. The usual checks, making sure the place was clean, that everything worked, the red cord alarm cord was hanging down to the floor & not tied up etc. Photo attached. I've also suggested the website be updated to include the lift dimensions, as it isn't that large, I struggled. How sad it would be for someone to turn up & discover their night of magic be inaccessible when there is a simple fix? My only issue now is due to my particular needs there is only one space in the main theatre that will fit me. I now have even more of a battle on my hands to get tickets for it. Unfortunately, the cost of this one seat is almost double the other options that physically aren't suitable for me. I am hoping there could be some compromise on this under the Equality Act 2010, or sadly my new regular treat will be out of reach.

What a breathtaking performance from the Birmingham Royal Ballet and orchestra. Ballet mixed with contemporary dance and classic Black Sabbath tracks. Theatre Royal at all levels amazing. Looking forward my next visit is to see Women in Black. I've already booked next year's Don Quixoute Ballet.

Absolutely wonderful theatre! The staff are so lovely and attentive making sure you get to your seat ok, and that you have the right place to be. The bar staff are just as great, really smiley friendly people!. The theatre itself is beautiful. The seats were really comfy, the air was cool so didnt get too warm or sweaty with that many people! Definitely recommend watching a show here! I watched hamilton and it was amazing!! Ive added a photo so you can see what the view is like from my seat, I sat in 26 Row A of the upper seats. Im 5 foot 5 and the metal bar came to under the stage when I sat all the way back! So it was perfect for me.

The Uncanny Great show the Theatre was packed! Easy to find, the carpark gets super busy so arrive in good time.
Troy T — Google review
Seats are quite small and close. Not much room either side for arms and not much leg room. Angry usher shouting at people about putting things on front of balcony. Could have just put some signs up. Apart from that stage view was good, sound was clear.
Andy P — Google review
Nice to return to TRP after many years to see Hamilton. The Theatre is a great venue in terms of organisation and with options for food and drink before, during and after shows being centrally located.

Visitors can experience a vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of bygone times at this historic market.
Lots of stalls undercover surrounded by cafes and independent shops. Great for unique gifts, food and vintage stores. Lots of choice of places to eat and Tavistock is full of history so a great day out

Lovely selection of local, artisan and other produce. Probably something for everyone. Liverpool beat the town centre, and the couch. We were serenaded by the bells. Close vicinity to lots of other shops and eateries. Very friendly.

Really enjoyed rooting through local (ish) produce and crafts on a rainy Saturday pm. If you think this town was originally an Anglo Saxon market town, nice to know it's still community focused. Tavistock more broadly punches above it's weight for a small town: great cafes, book shops and small artisan retailers. Also, great drives across the moor to get to it from any direction!

The Pannier Market in Tavistock is a true gem—full of charm, history, and friendly faces. Housed in a beautiful Victorian building, it offers a wonderful mix of stalls selling everything from local produce and artisan foods to unique crafts, antiques, and gifts. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a lovely sense of community. It’s the perfect place to browse, chat with stallholders, and pick up something special while enjoying the character of this historic market town.

This is a nice little farmers market. Made better by being so close to the Tavistock Pannier Market. The amount of stalls can vary, but the food and produce quality is great. We really love the Strawberry Fields bakery. PS - Getting there first thing means your get the goods your want. Some weeks by 11 ish a lots been bought up.

This OUTSIDE farmer's market adds a special touch to Pannier Tavistock Market. A winter visit, it was small. Flowers and plants. (to which I bought a beautiful double Camelia plant), to food. Most interesting was the "Moor Food" van. An interesting takeaway / delivery / sell, foods produced by locals for locals. Had a taste. Delicious! Bought some to take back to my Grandma house for later. Local business area worth investing in. Specially if their food is tasty and affordable! Thanks guys

It was a drizzly January day so not the best time to visit a farm! We didn't see anything beyond the shop and café. The shop was an eclectic mix of local produce, gifts and random consumables. A disappointing array of farm products, I guess due to being a quiet time of year. But a gorgeous display of home baked pasties and sausage rolls. Our meals were very simple but home cooked and delicious 😋 I would recommend the homemade soups 🍲
Hazel W — Google review
Lovely gem of a place ...had a lovely cream tea sat out on the patio ...very friendly service ...
Barbara T — Google review
Bit of an odd place, service seemed near on null. Breakfasts were barely cooked apart from the toast which came out with the waitress stating ‘one sides a bit burnt but the others ok so it will be fine’ as the top crust was cut off to hide the worst before being served to us, rather than making another slice. Got charged £1 for an apple juice that was labelled 50p which is surely illegal. Quite comical really but we wouldn’t go again, just bizarre, far from the usual farm shop and cafe experience.
Guy S — Google review
Had a lovely visit here yesterday. The Cider Apple cake was so yummy we even bought a whole one to bring home. Little one loved the animals and even made friends with a goat, and Lizzy was kind enough to let her see one of the bunnies up close when she came out to feed them. We'll definitely be back!

Lovely place to visit, food is always great and the staff are always friendly. We always make sure to come here when we come on holiday and is always our pit stop before heading home, Cream Tea recommended. Lovely views too
Zoe C — Google review
Lovely lunch hour spent here with my daughter. Beautiful views with a stellar cuppa whilst the small played in the play area, then my little lady thoroughly enjoyed getting up close with the animals. Great farm shop as well, can’t give it the full 5 stars as the gluten free range was unfortunately rather limited. However other half said the pasty & brownie I got him were delicious so what they do stock is very good quality!

For a working farm this rustic kitchen is a great place for some lovely homemade food. Their cheese & chilli pastie, along with a fresh side salad, was particularly nice and I'd choose it again. A lovely atmosphere and the staff friendly. Prices are reasonable. Staff brought a Guinea Pig round for children to see and stroke which I thought was a lovely touch. Would recommend this as an excellent place for home cooked and locally sourced produce. Well done to all the staff.

Wild Futures, The Monkey Sanctuary is a unique environmental charity that focuses on promoting the welfare, conservation, and survival of primates. It works to end the primate trade and abuse of primates in captivity while also conserving natural habitats through education. Visitors can explore sprawling leafy grounds with sea views and interact with around 40 primates during caretaker tours. The sanctuary offers a "keeper for a day" experience where visitors can learn from dedicated staff members who provide friendly and informative guidance.
This is an excellent place with a great cause. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly, coming out with stories about the different monkeys and how they got there, and you could tell they genuinely cared and had the monkey's wellbeing at heart. Not many monkeys or very big, but lovely place in a lovely location. Me and the kids had fun, Thanks!

Monkeys very entertaining knowledgeable staff. Disabled parking. You can adopt monkeys on their website. It is really sad but they are not currently open to the public due to financial difficulties so adoption is a great way to help the monkey sanctuary. It is also a registered charity in the UK. If you do adopt you can book a private visit so if you can try and help.

A lovely little place. Can look around in about an hour. Can stretch it to 2 if with kids playing and having a little nibble in the shop. Sausage roll was gorgeous and the dessert I had. The staff are very good and very informative about the species they have and the individuals themselves. Was very interesting few hours out thankyou x

A fantastic place for all ages. Staff are so knowledgeable and passionate about the Monkeys. A lovely setting with so many exciting and large enclosures for the Monkeys to enjoy, especially after their terrible beginnings before the sanctuary. Our boys 7 & 9 both loved it. They said it was their favourite place of the holiday. Shop has lovely well priced items to appeal to all, plus all profits go to the sanctuary. With covid restrictions the cafe was shut but the gift shops sold snacks and drinks very cheap. Plus entry is valid for a year-we will be back.
EMMA B — Google review
This is such a lovely little place!! They seem to be struggling for funding so we made sure we had some food there and a drink. The monkeys are so beautiful and have so much space to run and play and they really seem happy. The grounds are quite hilly but no problem for us. Lovely little eating area, clean toilets and lovely views out to sea. The staff though...they are absolutely outstanding! All of them were so happy to stand and chat and tell you about all the monkeys, their characters and how they ended up at the sanctuary. If you can go and help keep this place going definitely do it!!

Such an amazing day out. A must do if you are in the local area. Staff are full of knowledge and have a great care for all of the monkeys. Nice little gift shop and café all money goes back into the sanctuary. Play area and nice little walks. Activity sheets given out for kids. My 4 children enjoyed doing the activity. Fantastic day. Well worth the money for entry

Love, love, love New Mills Farm Park! We have stayed twice in the onsite b&b and have already planned our next stay there! The owners, Richard and Sandra are such lovely warm welcoming people. They have created a paradise for families on their farm, not only do they have fantastic facilities and activities for the kids, it is also a lovely place for parents to relax. The food is great and reasonably priced, their ploughmans is particularly tasty! The animals are all friendly and well looked after and always happy to let people pet them. Parking is ample and free and there are lots of things to do even if the weather's bad! You could easily spend the day there and leave with very happy children! Our kids (6&8) thoroughly love it there and can't wait to go back!

Excellent value for money. £14 for a family ticket. Only a small quiet farm but plenty to do for the day. Lots of picnic benches to sit down and enjoy your picnic or food from the reasonably priced café. Lots of ride on go karts for the dads to play on and loads of other things to do. I was most impressed by the giant ball pit the biggest I've ever had the pleasure to play in.

Visited New Mills Farm Park on a whim, did not expect to have an amazing time with the kids. Open space, large trikes, sand play, slides and animals come together in this astonishingly inexpensive family attraction. For £16 (family ticket), our family had a brilliant time here in some of the South West's finest weather.

Came here after riding the train and very pleasant way to fill a couple hours. Impressive selection of things for the kids to play on. Daughter was a big fan of the ramp to skateboard down. Animals seem really happy and well cared for. One of the rabbits ate a hole through my husbands shorts which daughter found to be the funniest thing she had ever seen (as a good wife I would never laugh). Had a fantastic scone and cup of tea for really good price.

This place is a hidden gem its great value for money lots to do indoor and outdoor play areas. The animals are really nice to feed my boys loved it would highly recommend also dogs in leads are welcome which is fab. It is cash only so just take note if ur like me i only pay on cards.

This place is always a great day out. So much to do and it's all there on a plate. Food is good, service is good, prices are good. Definitely go here if you have kids but probably better on a dry day.
Nina C — Google review
A super place for the kids to while away a few hours. The entrance is fairly cheap at £10 for two adults and a 4 year old. The cafe is busy so best to order early but is friendly and cheap and cheerful with usual sandwiches jackets and burger fayre. The activities for the kids are the best thing though with a lovely bunny petting cage and lots of farm animals to observe. There is an indoor bowling and old fashioned vintage games room plus a toddler role play area. The outdoor area is lovely and open with various go karts and scooters and push ride ons. There are two trampolines and a climbing frame and sand pit as well as swings and swing ball. There is a sandpit and for the more adventurous a skateboard run down the hill and zip wire. There is a small creek area but my little one was too small to leave unattended there. The steam train will bring you to this farm from Launceston but the roads despite being narrow are easy to navigate with Google maps. A fun day.

Lots of restaurants, boat rides, water taxis and the sea is so clear you can see bottom . The lovely town is nice on flat level but East Looe is very hilly

Enjoyed an early morning walk along this beach. A lot of morning swimmers and dog walkers. Generally well maintained however alot of broken glass along the walkways which is dangerous.

Loved this beach. Very clean, lots of nice cafes right on the beachfront and close by. Decent public toilets by the beach. Cute little pier and lovely views. Only negative is the nuisance seagulls constantly circling overhead and swooping on unsuspecting people with food on the beach. My advice.. don't take anything edible onto the beach as you won't have it for long!! We only took coffee and water and they didn't bother us.

Really glad we visited spent about hour and half lovely walk through lots of shops, busy but fairly nice seaside atmosphere, lovely little beach my son managed to do a little bit of boogie boarding a bit of a wave not a surfing beach but wasn’t too bad wave wise for a little bit of boogie boarding. Tamar Otter & Wildlife Centre, located 5 miles outside Launceston, offers a guaranteed otter sighting with its population of British and Asian short-clawed otters living in naturally constructed holts. Visitors can witness feeding times at noon and 3pm daily. The reserve also houses fallow deer, muntjac, pheasants, Scottish wildcats, and offers bird-of-prey talks at 11:30am and 2:30pm.
Absolutely fantastic Grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed it as did we. Very reasonably priced. Lots of walking plenty to see and do. The fallow deer and otters are amazing as is the bird of prey and wallabies! Well worth the money. Cafe simple home cooked foods that are not over priced. The whole staff were awesome and nothing was too much trouble They answered questions gave information and spent time genuinely taking interest in adults and children.

Absolutely brilliant otters, and other animals. the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The talks by the staff were very interesting and interactive with the birds of prey allowing the children to hold them in a leather glove. The walk around the grounds is mainly on gravel track with deer and wallaby's roaming free in the grounds and being able to be hand fed with feed bought at the centre. The chickens also were tough enough to face off with the male peacocks. A good day out .
Lord W — Google review
Absolutely loved this place. The staff were so kind and friendly, the animals well looked after, the talks informed and entertaining. The walk through the woods was tranquil and beautiful, and we were so surprised by the range of animals being cared for. We came away feeling very warm and life affirmed. Otters are good for the soul!
Anthony E — Google review
This was an excellent and surprising find! We were not expecting such a fun half day. The otters are lovely, but they also have peacocks and a very tame wallaby wandering about in-between legs who was happy to be stroked, fed and petted by a plethora of children. The staff are lovely, friendly and helpful. They have owls in aviaries, deer running around and plenty of space for all concerned. When we went they could not have otter talks due to COVID and social distancing, but they were able to have a Bird of Prey talk without the usual petting. We really enjoyed ourselves and easily recommend this to everyone, especially those with small children. Note, the winner of cutest animal was voted by our family to be the Harvest Mice. Definitely coming back!

Great place to visit, lovely to see how much space the animals have to roam around compared to others we have been to. It's great for little ones being able to get so close to some of the animals. The staff are friendly and happy to help. Would recommend wellies if it's been wet as its muddy one side but still not that bad.

Loved this place the staff were so nice, there were two guys who did a talk on the birds of prey very interesting and I got to hold an owl with the leather glove of course, it was a fabulous experience after the bird of prey talk another guy did a talk about the otters some from Asia and British otters also very interesting these guys are very knowledgeable and passionate about the animals that are there, after that we wondered around the wild life centre lots of different species of birds, there are wallabies, and deer where you can walk amongst and they come up to you and feed them, there is a cafe and gift shop too the food was beautiful, it's a absolute must see place to go if your in the area amazing place. I would just like to thank the staff at Tamar otter and wild life centre for being so caring to animals 👍❤😊

Wonderful place with a very knowledgeable and engaged staff. Clearly this centre runs on passion; it shows in the attitude and care that everyone working here exhibits. If you're in the area this is definitely an experience you won't want to miss!

Adored this place! So many beautiful animals, very tame wallaby which was happy for my niece to hand feed grass and stroke him, the man who was working and doing the otter talks was very knowledgeble about the animals and very interesting the things he had to say, cute 3 legged deer who my brother fell in love with! And my niece was amazed with feeding the other deer. Built on beautiful land with lovely wildlife. A brilliant day out for all the family! Only thing I would suggest is a bit more shade, as it was 25° and blistering sun but only 1 tree to shade any of the seating area and a couple more bins! As there only seemed to be 1 in the whole place.

Hidden Valley Discovery Park is a family-friendly adventure park nestled in the Cornish countryside. Run by the enigmatic Professor Puzzlewit, this magical setting is home to pixies and fairies, offering a pet-friendly experience where visitors can explore landscaped gardens, a beech-tree maze, and a miniature railway. The park also features team-building activities like Crystal Challenges and The Vault, as well as tranquil lakes and forest walks.
Excellent experience in Hidden Valley. Great puzzle tours for both children and adults. The mansion and study, where you can play short escape rooms are beautiful and a welcome indoor alternative when there was a little rain. Great facilities for bringing a baby. We were able to spent a full afternoon here comfortably with a 10 month old baby. The host was also very kind.

This is by far the best day out we have had in ages. We got there thinking it would be a bit of fun and expected to blast round and probably do all 3 puzzles quests. We were wrong. We did the medium level puzzle trails and it took us nearly 3 hours (we are 3 full grown adults)! There are staff around to help out if you get stuck ( and we did) who were lovely, friendly and chatty. We had a brilliant time. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the whole place. Cafe is small and does sandwiches, pastry, cakes and drinks but they were delicious. I would go back just for the cakes. They were amazing. There is ample parking. The grounds are stunning and beautifully maintained. The puzzles are fun and quirky and the clue system really makes you use your brain. Definitely, definitely will be going again

I visited here today with my 4 children and what an incredible time we had! Online really doesn't do this little gem justice! Its so well put together and inclusive of the whole family. The kids absolutely loved looking around the house and running round outside looking for clues whilst I tried my best to work out the puzzles. It really is one for all the family. We arrived at 11 and left at 4.30 bit you could definitely do the full day here. We didnt finish our trails but had great fun all the same. The value for money is definitely one of the best. My 3 year old son is disabled I did have to carry him around the mansion but everywhere else was that we visited was fully accessible. Would definitely love to return without the kids and would recommend this day out for anyone at any age!

Booked a trip to Hidden Valley for myself and husband with son (25) and daughter (22) with their partners. Slightly nervous that it would be aimed more for younger families but the website said any age so we took a chance. Oh My Days!! We had a great time! From entering (absolutely super welcome from the staff at the entrance) to the end of the day we had such fun. We did Swivelnoghin's Trail which was excellent (think the Professor's Trail would have been too tricky for us!) all 4 youngsters were having a fab time competing with each other and the trail to work it all out. The Study Escape Room was out first event and was good. The Secret Mansion was trickier with 6 of us and 1 'play card' to compete the tasks ( we did wonder if a group like ours could be offered additional cards at a small fee??). Of course we had to go around the site on the train and take photos in the Emes Room of us all at the wrong size! A brilliant day which we would all recommend....and would all return to attempt next year when it will have had it's annual 'change'.

Hidden Valley is a fantastic and picturesque place for the whole family. From solving riddles and discovering hidden passages in an old forgotten mansion to walking along scenic trails filled with fun tasks and activities – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Children, both young and older, will love the amazing playground, and the short ride on a small train adds an extra touch of charm. All of this is surrounded by a beautiful and peaceful pine forest, creating the perfect setting for a day full of adventure and exploration. Highly recommended for families looking to spend quality time together in nature!

Brilliant!! We had a great day and the light drizzle didn’t bother us at all! Plenty to do indoors and out. One of the best mazes I have been to in a long time. Staff were all so helpful and friendly.

Visited for my daughters 10th birthday and what a fantastic place to visit! We went in pretty blind, choosing not to research the place too much so it would be a surprise for the kids and this was definitely the right decision as it made some of the rooms within the mansion so much more fun so I obviously won't spoil what's in some of the rooms! The maze is a really good size with so many tricky ways to go and deadends to make it a little challenge. We did the first puzzle trail as having three young kids the other two would be a little tricky. They found it really fun and the questions just difficult enough to really work their brains. The six minute escape room was brilliantly done, a nice little adrenaline boost for us all running around trying to answer the clues in time. The train ride is very cute and a good way to see the scale of the place. The whole place is really well kept and you can tell money has been spent on it which is great. Plant displays really well looked after and beautiful. The kids park park is great and really fits in well with the feel of the whole place. We will definitely be back!

This one was a spectacular and very interesting place. Never been something similar like this. Its outstanding and very unique. The story and characters are very good & the surrounding of this Parc ... phenomenal! We made two exit houses, the maze and tried the trails. Even if we didnt made the trails completely but it was a fun day out. There is so much love in the details, the tiny and big buildings, the train and all of the plants...we loved it. Ah.. and don't forget the playground. Spacious and natural. Highly recommend!

A good walk a bit steep in places and muddy . A must for walking/wellington boots, plenty of parking and free (yeahy). A lovely little shack in the car park I didn't stop it was very busy which is good 👍🏻. The national trust have done well to encourage wildlife hedges all round here.👏🏻👏🏻

Lovely place. Well maintained throughout. Clean and peaceful. Free car park by Inkies restaurant opposite the main entrance to the falls. The restaurant has a vibrant and lovely atmosphere with outdoor seating area. I didn't have a meal there but the food looked delightful and well presented. Plus, their customers appeared to be happy and satisfied.

Free parking there is a small cabin selling teas and food. Did go up weekdays and weekends cafe seems to only be open at weekends. Its a well maintained woodlands with several paths from easy to a bit more challenging. The river that runs by the path is beatiful our dog loved it. There are same narrow lane to drive to it but not to bad and its signed posted when you get near. Totally recommend a visit you could spend a good couple of hours there easy

Beautiful walk, plenty of paths do great in winter without getting too muddy. There is plenty of parking and a little cafe. Great way to spend a few hours.

If following Google Maps, make sure you search for Golitha Falls Parking! Fantastic beginner level hike, with 3 different route options. Even on a grey, rainy day we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The falls themselves make for a wonderful view and the route is full of mossy beech trees.

Sandymouth Bay Beach, managed by the National Trust, is a stunning sandy beach located in North Cornwall near Devon. The beach features dramatic cliffs, intriguing rock formations, and a vast expanse of golden sand. Visitors can enjoy the seasonal Sandymouth beach cafe offering delicious hot and cold food. The well-maintained beach provides amenities such as restrooms and a dedicated car park nearby for easy parking.
Sandymouth Bay Beach Bude, Cornwall, managed by the National Trust, is an absolute gem and deserves every one of its five stars! From the moment we arrived, the convenience of the car park made access incredibly easy, a huge plus for a beach trip. The facilities are top-notch. The toilets were clean and well-maintained, which is always appreciated. We visited during the season, and it was reassuring to see the RNLI lifeguards on duty, providing that extra layer of safety for swimmers and families. The beach itself is stunning, with dramatic cliffs and plenty of space to spread out. A real highlight are the two beautiful waterfalls cascading down the cliffs onto the beach, they add a magical touch and make for fantastic photo opportunities! We were delighted to find a lovely cafe on-site, perfect for grabbing a hot drink & a bite to eat after a refreshing walk along the shore. And for those of us with furry friends, it's fantastic that dogs are allowed on the beach, making it a truly inclusive and enjoyable experience for the whole family. Whether you're looking for a relaxing day by the sea, a family adventure or a bracing walk with your dog, Sandymouth Bay Beach has it all.

It's a very beautiful, well-maintained beach. If you're a National Trust member, you don't have to pay for parking; the staff is very friendly. The beach has a café that sells everything, and the food is very tasty. The tip is to go to the beach in the morning because after 2:00 p.m. the tide is already quite high, so you can enjoy the sea more. There are also plenty of trails for those who enjoy hiking in the mountains. When I went, it was quite crowded, but I still didn't miss the chance to take a look at the top of the mountains. The view is beautiful!

This beach has certainly got a different vibe....up at the top...there is ample parking with two connected car parks and an amazing little cafe with a good view. The walk down to the beach can be tricky at the end closer to the beach as the stone steps seemed to have deteorated but if you are mobile you can manage. The beach gives access to rock pools and also water streams that flow from the mountain across the beach to the sea... couple of places had mini waterfalls as well.. making this a fine place for a family to visit...Pets too seemed to enjoy the wide beach.
Suresh P — Google review
A lovely beach, however, final access to the beach is severely hampered at the moment by the final 20 yards of path and steps. The condition of the transition from land to beach steps make it virtually impossible for anyone with any leg based disability - temporary or permanent, that want to access the beach. If you are carrying large beach items or similar it will also be difficult. Having said that, the beach (at low tide) is wonderful for kids and dogs (subject to normal dog rules of course!) The cafe was good with plenty of seating with views and a wide variety of food and drink.

The best beach I have ever visited, although if you struggle to walk up or down hills I would suggest getting there early so you can park in the lower car park as the walk up the hill to the over flow is tough! Very tough! even the walk to the beach from the main car park is a challenge. But once you get down there the views the rock formations, caves and waterfalls all make it worth it, rock pools and waves bigger than me (over 6 feet) perfect for surfing or body boarding! It’s fully overseen by vigilante life guards who regularly move the safety flags too! Great for the whole family and dogs too!
JAMES H — Google review
Very nice beach, I am a NT member so parking was free for me but it's very expensive and a very rocky beach, not very accessible for those with prams or wheelchairs. We had a great day and went a few times while in the area but on a couple of days I noticed a NT guy giving kids stickers but he didn't give one to my toddler and I thought that was a bit rude. Great beach though
Karyn L — Google review
A short walk from the car park, over a few rocks and your on to one of the nicest beaches around. There are toilets and a cafe by the car park. When the tide is out you can walk for ages and explore the hundreds of rock pools. Our dog had the best time ever
Toni K — Google review
We loved this beautiful beach just tucked away from the madness of height of season Budes beaches. It is a little bit of a climb up and down but worth it. Magnificent cliffs, rounded stones at the top of the beach. And as the tide goes out sandy for miles with dreamy rock pools. The Life guards were professional and friendly, keeping people safe. Do swim BTW the flags. Check tides before u come. Currently only car park payby cash or app. There is wifi at their office. Cafe great, nice breakfast with the best views. Dog friendly, our dogs had the best time. U will need shade in the summer.
