Had an amazing time here. Beautiful scenery, friendly staff, everyone spoke English to help tourists, the area is well maintained and clean. Loriant, my canyoneering guide, was funny and helpful. He also took pictures for us during the course and just paid him later. We jumped into the water from 2m, 4m and 6meter rock/platform. Won't say more, best if you experience it yourself! One of the best experiences ever.👍

I had an incredible time at Base Canyon! The experience was a perfect mix of adventure, beauty, and nature. We went zip-lining across the canyon, sliding into the river, and exploring this stunning natural setting — all surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Our guide, Philippe, was amazing. A true nature lover, he shared his passion for the environment and made us feel safe, comfortable, and excited throughout the entire experience. His energy and knowledge really added a special touch to the day. Everything was fun, refreshing, and well-organized. Whether you're an adrenaline seeker or just looking to reconnect with nature, this activity is a must-do. I’m already looking forward to going back!

(Translated by Google) Important place to go see when you come to Chambon sur Lignon. It recalls the title of Righteous Among the Nations obtained after the Second World War. The museum is well done overall. However, compared to young children, I would say that the beginning is very well thought out: the little cartoon, the locomotive, the timeline... But then there are too many panels and long films to watch, there is a lack of interactivity for them. This is my feeling and that of the children. But despite everything the place is rich in information. In addition, you can currently see a temporary exhibition of Chagall. Fair price. Very good welcome. I recommend. Tarif correct. Accueil très bien. Je recommande.

(Translated by Google) We visited the Place de Mémoire of Chambon-sur-Lignon, a rural village in Haute-Loire located on a plateau. During the Second World War, its inhabitants welcomed and saved thousands of refugees, including many Jewish children, taking advantage of their situation in the free zone. The Place of Memory pays tribute to these Righteous People and to local resistance through a journey rich in testimonies and exhibitions. This visit is truly very moving. It includes viewing video animations, as well as extracts from the short film “Trois Justes de France”, in the form of a collection of testimonies. The exhibition is well documented and highlights the exceptional commitment of this region between 1940 and 1944. This Place of Memory reminds us of the importance of not forgetting these acts of courage and humanity, in the face of the horror of war. Wonderful and clean spa with a variety of hot saunas and thermal water jets along cold water bucket and ice sink. The views are spectacular. Two kinds of hot tea provided along with two types of water. No cafe on-site so may need to bring a snack bar (keep in locker) if you plan to stay long. Plan for a relaxing 3 to 4 hours. Site Le Corbusier in Firminy offers an amazing experience for architecture enthusiasts and visitors from all walks of life. The guided tour, although tickets may be limited, provides a comprehensive understanding of the historical context and intricate details of the buildings. The staff is accommodating and helpful, ensuring that non-French speakers are included by providing translations during the tour. A visit to this site is highly recommended as it offers a real treat for architecture lovers and an intriguing experience for everyone else.

Had an amazing experience! I was looking forward to my trip to Firminy, especially the guided tour of the Housing Unit. Unfortunately, the tickets on the website were sold out, but after emailing the staff they made it possible for me and my friend to have the tour, which turned out to be amazing. The guide made sure to include us (non-French) in the tour and translated most of the important information. Everyone was really nice and helpful, I can’t imagine having a better experience. Thank you so much ❤️

Vélorail des Gorges du Doux

Mentioned on
1 list
Transportation
Vélorail des Gorges du Doux is a highly recommended activity, especially on hot days when the course offers plenty of shade. It's suitable for those with a normal level of fitness and preparedness. Children must be at least 1.40m tall to pedal, but there is space for them at the back if they can't reach. The route covers 12 km and provides an interesting mix of pedaling and relaxing while enjoying the scenic surroundings.
A slow ride through the countryside, along a river, through the mountains. Peaceful trip as you get rocked in the coach. If you love trains and like to see the the scenery from a different angle, this is for you. We took the 20 km trip. Had a nice lunch in the town and headed back after 3 hours. I loved it.
Ferenc T — Google review
So much fun! We did the 12km route which seemed expensive at first for a family of 4 but well worth the views and the fun peddling. Our 9 and 12 year old managed the peddling just fine and the train ride back up was lovely. Ample parking for a motorhome too.
CJ B — Google review
We had a fun time meandering up the rail line by train followed by an hour in the open air rail bike. Peddling is intermittent, gravity does most of the work. This was the perfect time of year to do this.
Glenn R — Google review
Lovely family day out with wonderful views. A level of fitness would help in parts but much of the route in downhill, so will require less cycling input.
Chris J — Google review
A fabulous experience for us and the family. Needed some effort at a few points on the route, so you ideally need 1 or 2 fairly fit people. Lasted about an hour and there is a chance to stop halfway and switch the people cycling. When you reach the finish point you wait for the other cars and then get a train back. Was a wonderful way to see the French countryside
Craig B — Google review
Nice velorail to do with kids. We did the “etroit” tour. It starts a bit boring but the second part is very nice! The train brings you back to the station. Near the station you can buy drinks and eat something
Davy W — Google review
Had a great ride. The staff were great and very thorough in checking you were on the correct train depending on your ticket. The trip through the gorge was wonderful. Even though its all downhill you do need to put some effort in to keep moving.
Chris T — Google review

I called and asked if we can come with a boy 4 years old and someone on the phone told me 'yes' and explained the prices and opening hours, pool temperature, everything. We drove 200 km to reach there and the ladies on the reception didn't allow us to enter because of our 4 years son - there is a special schedule for the little ones and can't enter any time. And we were not on the right time of course because the lady on the phone didn't explain that. So we came for nothing and they didn't want to make any exception for ONE child. Very disappointed. Also this schedule you can't see on their website.

Nice enough thermal springs with a large pool inside and outside. Not very big. If you like lower temperatures it is 30-32C. For me this was very cold and very unpleasant while I was in the water. However after I got out of the water and dried off it felt pretty relaxing. 11€ for one hour 15.50€ for one session. One hour is plenty unless you wanna freeze...

(Translated by Google) Nice new place (last time I went they were in St Julien Molin Molette). Interesting mini museum before accessing the demonstration room (several hours during the holidays - see their website). The procedure is very well explained. My 4-year-old son was fascinated. Then we saw the production and bagging rooms behind the windows and back in the shop. Very large parking lot. Everything is free, but with the tasting in the shop, we're in love 🤤 Their marshmallows are excellent, as is the crepe dentelle spread. I recommend going when there's a demonstration, even if there's a video when there isn't one. All the staff are very welcoming and helpful. Thank you.

(Translated by Google) A short but well-explained and free visit. The demonstration and explanation of how the sweets were made was brilliant, even my young children loved seeing the work being done live. The store is very clean and well laid out, the welcome is very friendly and of course… very good sweets. I recommend it. (Translated by Google) Delicious artisanal confectionery. I came here twice in one week while on vacation in the area. The downside is the young ladies at reception and at the checkout who have no business or hospitality skills.... Yesterday I bought over 50 euros worth of merchandise and 25 euros a few days earlier. Yesterday, when I asked if it was possible to taste a fruit paste or marshmallow to discover, I was told "we don't have time to restock," but the restocking bins are right under the reception desk! What a shame... This factory really deserves a better team in its shop. When we left, we didn't get a "Thank you" or "Goodbye"!

(Translated by Google) The marshmallow candies are delicious, varied, and surprising (verbena, for example). I recommend you try them. The spreads are a delight for the taste buds of both children and adults. And there are so many other things to discover; I highly recommend this shop to everyone.

Heritage railroad
Tours
Rail Tours
All aboard the Train de l'Ardèche, a historic railway line that offers a scenic journey through dramatic gorges and chestnut groves. The route, known as the Mastrou, was constructed in the late 19th century and features impressive engineering structures to navigate the winding terrain. Passengers can enjoy a steam or diesel-hauled ride with old wooden seats and picturesque views. Additionally, there's a well-stocked souvenir shop and an interesting museum displaying signaling lamps.
One of our favorite experiences, we did it several years ago but I think this year we will go back, You can just enjoy nature and the train trip all day. There is a parking on site. 10/10 recommend

Authentic old fashioned coal fired steam locative. Open air cars with wooden seats. Gorgeous scenery. It takes about 1.5 hrs round trip.

Absolutely amazing. Would highly recommend to go by yourself or the family, this is a real treat for kids or adults. It's a one in a lifetime experience. Causing it to be a core memory in my holiday. 10/10 highly recommend.

A wonderful narrow gauge (metre) heritage railway running up the lovely valley of the river Doux. A beautifully restored steam locomotive and carriages wind their way through a tunnel and over viaducts with time for a good lunch at Lamastre before returning. A great day out. Highly recommended.
Phillip S — Google review
So now it is time for some grown up play tools. The railway station is located beside the excellent camping Ardeche le Castelet, and the narrow gauge railway is trafficked with an ancient steam engine. Very cosy in beautiful weather.
Christer S — Google review
A fun train ride with an announcer that explained all the sights soaking in French.
Mike L — Google review
I took the Train des Gorges, which goes from the Train station outside Tournon du Rhône (T. St Jean de Muzols) to Colombier le Vieux / St Barthélémy le Plain. The entire route on the steam train takes 1.5 hours. I was on a Viking River Cruise so I don't know how much it costs. There's a small free museum, a gift shop, a snack bar and restrooms before you get on the train. There are also restrooms at the turn-around point. The trains can be open air (with roof) or closed depending on the time of the year. We had open air trains so we had some ash and soot from the coal. The narration is all in French, except for a few safety announcements in English. The journey is lovely!

A brilliant steam train; a narrow gorge loads of twists and corners with some rain -- the steam lit up like a beacon! Great upward run, a manual turn table for the engine then back down hill. A truly great afternoon

Safari de Peaugres

Zoo
Outdoor Activities
Safari de Peaugres is a wildlife park that offers both drive-through and walk-through zones, featuring animals from 4 continents as well as a petting zoo. The park is situated on the edge of a cliff with breathtaking views. Visitors can enjoy up-close encounters with various animals, including lions, tigers, and bears during the safari tour. The walking part of the safari/zoo is extensive and may take most of the day to explore.
Overall, we had a great experience, especially with the convenient driving access to the park. Be aware that the opening hours vary and may start later than expected, so it’s best to check in advance. We arrived late on a weekday, so there were few visitors, and the driving tour was nearly empty, allowing us to observe animals up close in their natural, relaxed state. However, check-in was a bit challenging due to the confusing location—Google Maps didn’t lead us to the correct spot, and some restricted roads along the way added to the confusion. Thankfully, the park staff helped us out, though most of them spoke only French or very limited English. The park accommodations are well worth it, but they’re best for summer stays, as it gets dark early in autumn and winter, making it hard to see any animals. Rooms 1, 2, 5, and 20 are near most of the animals and are recommended. As for dining, the dinner provided was possibly French cuisine, though even after reheating, it didn’t taste great. Still, tea, coffee, and milk were provided. Breakfast the next day was quite nice. The room was spacious with good hot water, though some maintenance was needed—several lights were out, and the Wi-Fi didn’t connect, which staff attributed to a recent storm. The room amenities included a hair dryer, coffee machine, and microwave. In the morning, we joined a wolf and bear feeding activity, though the explanations were all in French. The park is large, and even a quick walk-through took 2-3 hours, so plan more time if you want to stop and observe the animals.

Safari is best part! You can spend whole day with kids here. Each part of the zoo is worth to visit. Super clean and all the animals are healthy. It shows they are really good in their job. Great place to visit once.
Vaibhav S — Google review
Very beautiful and friendly safari and park. 3h really worth your time. Even the cantine food was acceptable which is pretty rare.
Charles M — Google review
Wow Safari Peaugres is a fantastic destination, especially for families. We had a wonderful time exploring the park — it’s well-designed, spacious, and offers a unique opportunity to observe animals up close in a semi-wild environment. One of the highlights was being able to drive through the safari section in our own car. Watching animals like zebras, giraffes, and ostriches roaming freely just a few feet away was an unforgettable experience. The park is very well-managed, and the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. They ensured everything was safe and easy to navigate. Even without a car, the rest of the park offers plenty to see on foot, including impressive enclosures for lions, bears, and other wild animals. The walking trails are clearly marked, and there are informative signs about the animals, which make it both fun and educational for kids and adults alike. What we appreciated most was the thoughtful layout and the effort taken to provide a natural habitat for the animals. Clean facilities, well-placed rest areas, and food options made the whole visit comfortable. Overall, it was a great experience, and I would highly recommend Wow Safari Peaugres to anyone looking for a fun and enriching day out — with or without a car!
Puneet D — Google review
Great place with children. My 7 year old daughter had fun. Car safari took an hour. Moderately crowded for the weekend but manageable. The safari on foot is huge so takes around 4/5 hours to complete with the Animals kept in their natural habitats. A few food and drink options but be prepared to queue.
Swastik R — Google review
Excellent safari. Incredible views and great respect to the animals. Thumbs up for the guidance with incredible information and insights for each animal.

A renowned zoo located in Peaugres, this area is one of the largest safari parks in EU and is home of over thousands animals from various species. People can discover the park by car or on foot to see animals like elephants, lions, giraffes and more. It also offers educational activities for children.
Thuha N — Google review
The parc was very nice. A lot of animals to see. In the zoo we loved the mansion with the bats and stuff and we loved the part with the lions and tigers. The safari part of the parc, was great to see too. One of the beats stood up against our car. Luckily no damage, so it was nice to see it so upclose. It was nice that you could park your car in the shade underneath the solarpowered roof. For lunch a lot was sold out. We wanted a sandwich but ended up with chicken nuggets and fries. The waterparc was nice too. On a hot day it was nice for the kids to be able to cool down a bit.

Wildlife park keeping primates, from chimps to gorillas, plus big cats, birds & reptiles.
A wonderful day spent at the ZOO. Lots of exotic animals, some of which you can even walk among - birds. As you can see, part of the park will be expanded and the area will increase. The animals have very nicely decorated habitats with enough space. Inside the garden there is a snack bar and a souvenir shop. Very well stocked. Definitely an unforgettable day with pleasant memories.

I have mixed feelings about zoos, I went because my company organized a visit. First time in my life I've been in the presence of a gorilla, no more than a few meters away. First time I've seen a gorilla eating fruits and.... yogurt? This gorilla was being hand fed by the owner of this zoo, Mr. Pierre, he was feeding her inside her room it was fascinating to see. First time I've seen a lion run firsthand, and very upclose. And last but not least, first time I've heard a group of 10+ chimpanzees quarreling, calling out and "screaming". This zoo gave me a sense of humbleness and some sort of primal fear I've never felt before. It made me realize how majestic and imposing these animals can be, yet how beautiful they are too. I liked the back story too. I hope they are truly living up to their mission. I'm still thinking about what I saw.

Very nice zoo! The zoo was larger than I expected and had a nice range of animals. I really enjoyed seeing the Sun Bears and all of the monkeys.
Samantha E — Google review
What a great zoo. Never seen so many active animals at a zoo before. The tigers and lions were magnificent and playing with each other rather than just sleeping or pacing. Good close up viewing with all the animals. Also it's obvious that the zoo is expanding their enclosure space so it'll be interesting to see what it looks like the next time we return. Well worth the entrance fee and we will definitely return when we are in this area.
Paul H — Google review
Good zoo close by Lyon. The zoo offers some great species of animals, but I think the price is too high. You can spend a couple of hours here, but the park is small and completed within 2 hours. We missed a bunch of animals, despite taking the time to spend extra time in the park after finishing the route. We missed the coatis, servals, binturongs, dingos and some more. Very poor habitats for some animals and some animals did not seem to have any space, like the ocelots. We did really enjoy seeing the snow leopards and the arctic wolves. The park smells bad in a lot of places and the hygiene in the toilets is just bad. For such a price we expected clean toilets somewhere, but it was very poorly maintained. Parking is free. €18,50 is too much in this case, but it’s not a total waste. Hopefully it is being used for future wellbeing of the animals.
Yurivdb — Google review
Beautiful clean zoo, animals are well looked after, very reasonably priced... Great day out
Joanne S — Google review
Conservation focused zoo with quite a lot of interesting primate exhibits (amongst a lot of other types of animals). Big enough that you can spend a few hours here but also not so big that it has to take up your entire day. The zoo is positioned up a hill so there is some elevation change during your walk through but the park is entirely accessible (wheelchairs of course, but that means also strollers too Mamas… even enough room through entrances and pathways for huge American double strollers). And the layout of the enclosures up the hill allows for really good viewing of the animals in their enclosures.

It is adorned with inscriptions of his poetry and stands as a testament to his dedication and creativity. The site has become a popular destination for visitors, offering an opportunity to explore the surreal construction that embodies someone's dream.

Le Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval, or the Ideal palace of postman Cheval. This place is a hidden gem of the art i like. Do you like Escher, Dali, and Gaudi? Then you will enjoy this 'Palace'. Don't be fooled, though. It's not that big or will keep you interested for an entire day, but it is a must-see if you are in the neighborhood.

Musée et sites archéologiques de Saint-Romain-en-Gal in Département du Rhône offers a rich archaeological heritage, showcasing Ancient Roman life. The museum consists of an indoor exhibition and an outdoor excavation site. The indoor exhibition features a comprehensive audio guide providing insights into Ancient Vienne, along with large mosaics. On the other hand, the outdoor area allows visitors to explore extensive excavated ruins, offering a glimpse into the lives of wealthy Romans.
Lovely museum with great mosaics plus extensive outdoor ruins. Nice staff. A manageable size to see in 1-2 hours. Audio guides in English available and included in the modest ticket price.

Lots of interesting artifacts in the museum and interesting ruins in the surrounding grounds. Probably allow 2-3 hrs minimum but could easily have spent longer. Free audio guide covered inside and out. Helpful staff. Toilets and at least in the 2 outside 'picnic points' the was free drinking water
Neil F — Google review
Overall a nice museum with especially interesting floor mosaics that are in very good shape. A big collection of tools for day to day usage in Roman households. There's free english audio guides but not English written explanations (only French). The outside ruins are less interesting.
Stijn F — Google review
A total wow!! The French really know how to honor the past. Beautifully laid out with superb explanations plus a free audio guide. It is staggering to learn the museum was built on the remains of a Roman city. Thank you Vienne for preserving this ancient treasure (s).

There are 2 elements to this museum: (1) The indoor exhibition, (2) Outdoor excavation site. (1) Do pick up the audio guide it provides a vastly comprehensive story of the exhibition and paints the story of Ancient Vienne. Do not forget to go up the stairs to see the large mosaic! (2) A very vast excavated area with plenty to see! With a little imagination the lives and living of the wealthy Romans really comes to life here. Overall a fantastic Museum, 11/10 would recommend! Estimated time needed: 3-4hrs (With audio guide)
Joel L — Google review
Excellent outdoor site and inside museum. Especially appreciated the live water features. If you love Roman mosaics, this is your place. Two suggestions. One, they should tell you the audiogiude covers both inside and outside. Also, a locker would be better than their checkin system. Closed toed shoes for outside better.
S. K — Google review
Two part museum, one traditional inside part and then the actual ruins outside the museum. The inside part is housed in a modern spacious building, many beautiful mosaics but not so many other items. Many of the signs are in French only which is a bit of a shame (says the English spoken 😉). There is an optional audioguide though. The outside part was my favourite - fantastic feeling to walk along the old roads and think about the similarities between then and now. Many of the signs where a bit weathered and not the easiest to read though, but again an audioguide is available - but I prefer to have my hands free and rather read then listen. Plenty of staff and security people on the site - almost to many... but all friendly and helpful. Well worth a visit

The Roman Temple of Augustus and Livia, constructed in 1BC, is a significant part of the city's rich historical heritage. It stands alongside other ancient monuments such as the Theatre Antique and the Garden of Cybele with its Gallo-Roman archaeological remains. The city also showcases medieval architecture, including the Saint-Andre-le-Bas Church and the Saint-Maurice Cathedral.
Very well preserved (and rebuilt) remnant of Roman times. Large temple building with pillars, and an interior area which you may be able to visit (if gate is unlocked). No charge.
Doug N — Google review
Just a 25-minute train ride south of Lyon, the Temple of Augustus and Livia stands as one of France’s most remarkably preserved Roman monuments. Erected between 20 and 10 BCE, this Corinthian-style temple was dedicated to Emperor Augustus and his wife Livia, embodying the grandeur of Roman architecture in the provinces . Positioned at the heart of Vienne’s ancient forum, the temple features a hexastyle façade with six fluted columns and an elevated podium, reminiscent of the renowned Maison Carrée in Nîmes . Its survival through the ages is attributed to its conversion into a Christian church during the 5th century, later serving various roles including a courthouse and library, before restoration efforts in the 19th century reinstated its classical Roman appearance .
Wisanu T — Google review
When in Vienne… do as the Romans did! 🏛️ The Temple of Augustus & Livia is over 2,000 years old and still looking gorgeous. From imperial worship to medieval church to Revolutionary theatre – this place has seen it all. And the best part? You can wander up for free and feel like you’ve stepped straight into ancient Rome (minus the toga). Pro tip: swing by at sunset – the golden light on those Corinthian columns is unreal!

Vienne Ancient Roman Theatre is a well-preserved stone-built theater dating back to around 40 AD, making it one of the largest in Roman Gaul. With a seating capacity of 13,000 spectators, it hosts live music and dance performances during the summer. The theater remained hidden until its rediscovery in 1908. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the city from this ancient site and even catch a jazz concert. Climbing to the top offers both a great workout and stunning vistas.
The place itself is really magical. Was there for a concert and honestly sunset and music in this scenery was just perfect. Not to mention the obvious top notch sound quality even far up. Everything was easily accessible and the organisers really did a good job of allocating the space. Loved every second of the show 😻

A nice medieval village in a wine producing area. Proud and beautiful with its golden yellow stones and a very beautiful church high up.

When we arrived there we asked if we could go up - they have set the tower up as a mini museum with about 4 floors before you reach the rooftop. The stairs are very steep (beware) but the view from the top is well worth it. Accessing the tower costs a mere €2 per person (they take card payment) and is free for children.

The Musée des Confluences, located in Lyon, is a striking modern museum that opened in December 2014. It boasts a futuristic architectural design and is situated at the confluence of the Rhone and Saone rivers. The museum features both permanent and temporary exhibitions that delve into anthropology, natural science, and human history. Its iconic structure resembles a transparent crystal cloud made of stainless steel and glass.
Really nice museum! The building itself is impressive and easy to navigate, so you don’t feel lost while walking around. Exhibits are well organised, interactive, and fun — I especially liked the audio parts and the buttons to press. The themes are diverse, from Darwin’s evolution to marine biology and astronomy, so there’s something for everyone. Most of the info is in French and English (though some videos are only French). The architecture is stunning, and the view from the 4th floor is a nice bonus. Definitely worth a visit!

When I visited it was a free admission day. The museum is impressive, good quality exemplars , exhibition are for every age. On the roof they have a nice cafe and you can enjoy the view from the top.

This is by far the best museum I have been to. The exhibition, the design and the presentation are very modern and easy to digest. Plan plenty of time. We spent almost 5 hours here and it was not enough.

If you’ve ever wanted to touch both a meteorite AND a fossil without getting kicked out of a museum, this is your chance. Don’t hesitate. A brilliant museum all around: science, history, culture & more. There’s something for everyone.

very intresting and informative visit. All the exbits well explained in French and English. the building itself is cool. Do go to the 4th floor and admire the views. They had a information set on my name and saint i was named after

This might be one of the best modern museums I went to, really! It's very complete and I think kids would love it- there were a lot of enthusiastic ones when we went, at least. Their permanent expositions are very well detailed and easy to navigate, they're mostly about natural history, anthropology and culture, not much art history, or at least I didn't find one. Everything has french and english explications. On the entrance to each permanent exposition, there was a guide who would give a general feel of the pieces, and they could speak English too! Their temporary expositions were interesting and very well done, we went to the Amazon and the dreams ones, both very interesting. We didn't have to pay extra for these. They had elevators for all stages, and there were a lot of audio explanations too. On the terrace there was a lovely - albeit a bit expensive - cafe, with nice views. If you're not hungry, the terrace is included on the ticket price anyway, so you should go at least for the view. A must see in Lyon, for sure!

Amazing exhibitions. This was my second time here and it felt like the first. Thoughtfully arranged and curated museum perfect for all ages. The current Zombies exhibition is one of a kind.
Zsolt B — Google review
Interesting permanent and temporary exhibitions with lots of interactive elements - especially liked the Species wing of the permanent exhibits. Ticket price was reasonable (12 Euros) and the 4th floor outside terrace views are worth the price of admission! Oh yeah, and it has the most innovative shape for a museum!

Théâtre Gallo Romain, also known as the Gallo-Roman theatre, is a significant historical site in Lyon that offers a glimpse into the city's ancient Roman past. The ruins of two Roman theaters are now used for open-air concerts and festivals, providing visitors with a unique cultural experience.
This place is really cool. It’s free and easy to find. It is one of the cooler Roman ruins because it is still being used today. It was fun watching people enjoy it like a park. Would highly recommend visiting then heading over to the museum!
Daniel H — Google review
Amazing ruins to check out within a close walk from the Cathedral nearby. Unfortunately, we did not have the time to explore the inside of the museum, and since we were heading to Rome it seemed appropriate to postpone anthing Roman to our later trips. The ruins themselves however, still are able to immerse you in history and come alive as you walk through them.
Minh N — Google review
A place to marvel, was for the community back then, still is now (so I heard). Will be wonderful to be part of activities here, but even just a quick stop on the way back from the Basilica already gave me glimpses of stories this awesome place has. Basking in the morning sun, this open air theater sure is special. Do visit the museum if you have the chance.
Milka C — Google review
Very easy to get to using the funicular which was about 2 EURO, one stop from the town cathedral. The ruins are open for people to just wander around and take photos, there is a museum that I did not go into. From there it's a short walk trip the basilica and the amazing views from there. You can also walk from there back to the old town which includes a very long and steep staircase.
Wing C — Google review
Walking through the theatre feels like stepping back in time, with its impressive stone seating, partially intact stage, and gentle slopes inviting exploratio. The site is remarkably well preserved, allowing visitors to walk freely among the ruins and soak up the atmosphere where audiences once gathered for performances nearly two thousand years ago.
Muhammad F — Google review
This was a very happy but unexpected discovery. There are many information points explaining what each space used to be, and this is supported by images of the buildings -this is certainly helpful because you’re only seeing stones! A must when visiting Lyon!
Ana T — Google review
The Ampitheatre was still in good condition considering how old it is. There are a lot of modern overlays here as the space is used for events etc. I think it would be an amazing venue. Go to the museum which tells the story of how Lyon was founded by the Romans. The Ampitheatre is so out in the open and there is no shade so be careful on hot days. You can look at the Ampitheatre for free but the museum has an entry fee.

Basilica of Notre Dame of Fourvière

Basilica
Sights & Landmarks
The Basilica of Notre Dame of Fourvière is a 19th-century religious monument in Lyon, France. It features four octagonal towers and houses a museum showcasing religious art. Regular Catholic services are held at the basilica. Visitors can enjoy a romantic evening in Lyon by staying at the Boudoir Spa, which offers luxurious accommodations with amenities such as a Jacuzzi and hammam, providing an ideal setting for special occasions or simply spending quality time together.
You can see the Basilica from almost everywhere in the Lyon old town but it is well worth heading up to see it up close. Take the funicular (walking back down is nice) to get there. The Basilica is in such lovely condition. The murals look amazing and there is a real sense of peacefulness. Make sure you take the time to look closely at the murals. My favourite was the one depicting Joan of Arc. We went on a Saturday morning and it wasn't too busy. We didn't have to wait to go in. It is free to visit. There is a lovely courtyard next to the Basilica where you get some amazing views over Lyon.
Craig C — Google review
The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is one of Lyon’s most iconic landmarks, visible from almost anywhere in the city. Personally, I usually find the interiors of Orthodox churches more spiritual, but this basilica’s interior really amazed me — it’s beautiful and inspiring. The exterior is just as impressive, and the panoramic view over Lyon from the top is fantastic. You can get there easily by tram, or hike up if you prefer (which I’d also recommend). Nearby, the Roman Theatre and archaeological site are free to visit and very well preserved. Both the basilica and the ruins are definitely worth seeing.
Dimitris — Google review
Arriving late evening in Lyon, our Uber driver took us here on a quick detour to our hotel ‘because it is so very beautiful, and you guys can see view of Lyon skyline from there’. Indeed it was a beautiful Basilica, majestic even in the dark of night. Indeed it was an impressive view of Lyon. Very grateful of him, blessed his soul. I got the chance to go back the next morning, and although did not got the chance to go inside, my appreciation grew even more about the opportunity to visit. A must go when you are in Lyon. If your hotel is not nearby, they have tram from the city center that stops directly in front.
Milka C — Google review
Beautifully located on top of a hill, and Best to take an Uber to get there. There is also a vista point on the side of the church with great views of the whole city. If you can walk down the hill, you can visit a nice museum with an outdoor Greek theatre. You can also take a short cut and walk the stairs down the hill

Lovely place to visit in Lyon. Get a day ticket for € 6.90 and couple of trains later you are there. Beautiful views of the city (sunset as well). Basilica is amazing. Don't compare it with Vatican however it is grand in its own way.

It is a marvelous place to visit even when you are not Christian. The interior of the basilica Notre-Dame of Fourvière in Lyon, is tremendously high. The walls are astonishing and it drops your mouth down to the floor. I have not taken many pictures inside because my eyes were focused on all the tiny details in each stunning things my eyes would lay eyes on. If one thing to visit in Lyon, it clearly is there and Paul Bocuse Market^^.
Anne-Cécile — Google review
What a beautiful basilica one has the pleasure to see, adore and to participate because during our vist a mass was held. The church has an endless history to show, not only in the holy Christian sense but also in its rich architectural designs. A real treat to be there.

Specialty Museums
Nestled in the historic heart of Lyon, the Musée Cinéma et Miniature is a treasure trove for film enthusiasts and miniature art lovers alike. Set within a beautifully restored 17th-century building, this museum showcases an impressive array of hyper-realistic miniature scenes that transport visitors into the world of cinema.
This museum was very well laid out. We enjoyed the smaller exhibition rooms which were usually themed in some way. We absolutely loved the Wes Anderson exhibit and would definitely recommend visiting if you enjoy his movies. I'm personally not into a lot of movies which definitely took away from the experience. However, if I were into them I can guarantee this is an amazing place to visit. Just fair warning to anyone like me that this might not be the perfect place for you. The miniature exhibits were excellent, we were in awe at how detailed some of the pieces were!
Katelyn — Google review
Really enjoyed my visit here - so many interesting exhibits and things to see. I think the best part is the fact that the films referenced and the props from the films are films that are very well-known, not just random French films. Would highly recommend to people as an activity in Lyon, however my one small issue was that we bought tickets in advance but still had to line up in the same queue as everyone else, so buying a ticket in advance was fairly pointless, only decreased the price slightly. But other than that really loved it.
Peter C — Google review
AMAZING! I think should be a must do when you visit Lyon with kids or just if you like movies and a different type of art. They have created incredible mini and real size scenes from movies and normal life things! A different way to know history as well! We went without tickets and ending paying less because they have a family packet. If you are 2 adults and one or more kids, it is definitely cheaper.
Angelica B — Google review
Worth visiting. You should go and see everything they placed in the museum. At first we enjoyed the props & artifacts from famous movies. However what we liked most is the miniature room, carefully detailed and amazinggg
Phuc N — Google review
Incredible and unique museum. They have some really cool pieces from films, which are still interesting to look at even if you haven’t seen them. The miniature section was a good surprise also—they are so detailed and realistic! While it is a bit on the more expensive side, it’s worth it and it is an independent business.
Evie F — Google review
Walking through this museum felt like stepping straight back into my childhood (I was born in the mid-80s), and it was nothing short of magical. From Star Wars to Batman 1989, from Aliens to Beetlejuice, the collection is packed with iconic treasures that instantly spark memories of the films that defined an era. According to one of the staff, the Darth Vader mask here is the only original one on public display today, that alone is worth the visit! What sets this place apart is how personal it feels. I love the great art museums of France, but this was different, so much more relatable. Every piece triggered a wave of nostalgia, reminding me of movies I adored and had nearly forgotten, and reigniting the sense of wonder that first made me fall in love with cinema. These films came from the golden age of moviemaking, where practical effects and early CGI blended to create timeless magic that today’s movies rarely capture. Seven floors are filled with cinematic history, and while you can see it all in about 1–2 hours, it’s the kind of place where you’ll want to linger at your favorites. For me, highlights included the Darth Vader helmet, the full Batman 1989 suit and vehicles, the wonderfully complete Beetlejuice exhibit, and the jaw-dropping animatronic Alien that makes you feel like you’re right on set. Seeing Thor’s hammer (Mjolnir), Iron Man’s glove, and nods to classics like Indiana Jones, Mrs. Doubtfire, Jumanji, The Mask, and even Fast & Furious only added to the thrill. If you grew up with movies from the late 80s through the early 2000s, this museum is pure nostalgia wrapped in cinema magic. It’s a time machine back to Saturday nights at the theater or trips to Blockbuster, and it will leave you smiling long after you leave. I can’t recommend it highly enough. As a bonus, all the staff that work there are friendly, knowledgeable and passionate! Update: the top floor which houses the miniatures was closed when we arrived for renovations. If this is important to you, come back when they are completed.

As someone also work behind the magic, visiting this musuem is like a dream, from costume to props, set to figures… You can’t miss this, this is prob is the best musuem I’ve seen about cinema, movies. The visit was like a dream come true, from my fav movie Mary Poppins from 1964, to Jurassic world, kill bill to Beetlejuice, alien to Spider-Man! Last the not least, the Wes Anderson section, with some movie items and making off?! Seriously I’m so glad I come to Lyon for this!

Chocolatier Sève is a renowned market offering an array of gourmet delights such as cheeses, cured meats, and exquisite desserts. The founders have garnered numerous accolades for their commitment to traditional craftsmanship and the creation of delectable treats. With over 30 years of experience, this establishment continues to impress with its sumptuous creations available at multiple locations in Lyon.
We had to try a “Tarte À La Praline” during our short stay in Lyon and it was excellent. Very tasty crust. A must try. Service was quite slow as there was only 1 person assisting customers which was not her fault and she did her best to help everyone.
Will C — Google review
The service was excellent, but unfortunately, the chocolates were too sweet for my taste.
April W — Google review
In my quest to find the best macaron in Lyon I systematically tried a macaron at each shop in the food hall. Sève’s were by far the best, with my favourites being 1) Caramel 2) Coconut 3) Coffee. I must’ve gone back 3-4 times in one day. They are quite expensive, which meant I could only afford to try 8, but this is reflected in the quality. The staff were lovely and very accommodating of my terrible French. Merci!

The pastries are so pretty, it feels almost guilty to eat them. Nonetheless, I ate them. I ordered the chocolate mousse one and I was thinking of getting more but it's so rich that I was very full at the end. I'd like to go back and more of the pastries. There were dozens and dozens!

This is a nice indoor market. It has quite different atmosphere to la boqueria market in Barcelona. Both of them are great place to see and eat. But, this market has unique features like quiet and less crowded. Local fruits, cured meat , and seafood were excellent. My wife and I enjoyed cured meat and varieties of seafood, oysters, sea urchins, shrimps, and clams. They know how to sell and packages cured meat. One of stores used a vacuum sealed package for cured meat. We felt safe to carry them. All of staffs were friendly and kind. One of members even made a luxury restaurant reservation for us. I think that they know good local restaurants because they are the food suppliers.

(Translated by Google) Ugh, a money making machine.... I came there with my partner. (54 years and a little more for her for information, for a meal show, our Christmas present) Friendly welcome and immediately afterwards, obligation to take a photo with "2" artists, which you can buy for €9. Apero worthy of... I don't have a name, Lidl or Aldi is better! : Auvergne Taost (one passage to spread out, one to pick up what is placed on the Taost) Punch... without alcohol or very little, and without taste... except sugar. The basic STARTER, the dish - chicken fillet - just not good: chicken pierced in Saumur, dirty and waterlogged... so very, even too tender to be of good quality. Just spiced up with a porcini mushroom sauce. The accompaniment was supposed to be polenta...semolina. Before the cheese - disgusting and bland - and the frozen 🍨, another obligatory photo for €9. The coffee worthy of the neighborhood fair to finish... Well, we're old - not too old anyway - and we like good things, maybe the show will be better. I forgot something, express meal... followed by the show, not at the same time!!!! And yes, they offer the possibility of only coming for the show (to make more money) So the show: Animation by recorded tape to get in the mood throughout the evening, artists who are good, but who only reproduce what was asked of them. Édith Piaf, I like 2 to 3 minutes, but 15 minutes is a long time.... The girls,... pretty but mediocre show.... Mixture of children's show and nonsense fair. Anyway, after 25 minutes of show we left. I don't understand why you have such a rating. It seems that the food is not important and neither is the quality of the show. We have had other evenings of this type, for much less money and much better. 199€ for 2 + 37 euros for 2 glasses of champagne. Yes, if you want to change dessert, it’s €5!!! No photos because prohibited and very often recalled by the soundtrack (it's better to pay €9 for it 🤣🤣🤣) Conclusion: flee this place!!!

Lovely little well known chocolate shop. Has a great reputation in the area. The cakes, chocolates and other goodies are delicious and the Ice creams are great too! Lots of other activities are available if you intend to become a chocolatier.

(Translated by Google) First encounter with the Jouvenal chocolate shop/pastry shop. We first tried the cake. A chocolate cake encased in a vanilla cream. A wonderful combination of flavors. Not too sweet, just how we like pastries. A quality chocolate that's too rarely found in pastry shops. The price seemed very high considering the size of the cake. Then we tried a chocolate and orange peel marmalade cake, with combinations that reminded me of a cake from the chocolatier Bochard when he worked in pastry shops. We were rather disappointed with our experience. The cake is very sweet. The biscuit on the top of the cake doesn't add much in terms of texture. The chocolate part is very good. So why 3 stars... and not 4 or 5, because at this price point, I think I've found something very tasty. We'll be back because we have no doubt about this business's commitment to delighting us.

(Translated by Google) A superb and attentive welcome with original and desirable products... a detour that was worth it and a delighted wife this morning. (Translated by Google) Excellent quality pastries. The only downside is the price. I know they do everything to favor local and organic products, but when I see the price of the bomb and the fact that it gets smaller every year...

(Translated by Google) The chocolate is delicious! The welcome was very pleasant, the saleswoman even gave us a box and a frozen bottle of water because we were coming from far away and it was very hot, thanks to that we were able to bring these delicacies home 😋 (Original) Le chocolat est délicieux !
