The Archaeological Site of Olympia is an ancient sanctuary and the birthplace of the Olympic Games. It features impressive architecture, including temples dedicated to Zeus and Hera. The site was originally a sacred grove and later became a sanctuary for the god Kronos before hosting the first Olympic Games in 776 B.C. The games continued for over 1000 years until they were abolished by Emperor Theodosius in AD 393.
This is the starting point of the Olympic games. There are two museums on this site one before you come in and one near the end both quality impressive. The site is quite big with area preserved so you can not walk on or in them. But there is lots to see, pictures and descriptions of how it was back then. There are some really great pieces in the museums from helmets, shields, vases to tools weapons and other body armour. Amazing statues and mosaics which reflect the past games. You also find out about the modern games and the different use of the flame. Can I just say the we normally do some of the sites at a pace but could have done with more than 2 hrs at this location. 👍

One of the worlds’ most visited monuments. It is an experience not to miss. Tip:you may also find 3D binoculars/ augmented reality somewhere in town (we didn’t know but we saw many people using them) to help you understand how the building used to be in ancient times.

A must visit when visiting the peloponnese, has so much history and great things too see. I went because my wife is really into old things but as a neutral I found the place fascinating with information boards all around the site telling you what each rock was and what it was for. The tickets are well priced for what's included and will take up 3 hours or more of your day. There's also plenty of shaded areas as it does get hot in the sun.

Very interesting to see, where the Olympics originated (both the historical site itself as the two museums) One about the history of the site, the other one about the history of the (old) Olympic Games. With one ticket you can visit all three locations. It is a walkable distance from each other. As for the archaeological site... amazing!!!

We spent hours here. It's absolutely amazing. We first came on the August full moon but due to local fires it was closed. We spent 3-4 hours in the 2 museums and we had about an our in the archaeological site, we could have done with at least another 30 minutes at least. It really is impressive and a must for visiting. The ticket for the 2 museums and site costs 20 euro per person. Children were free. You can purchase your tickets at all 3 places and where ever you buy it that's where you have to enter first.

Filiatro Beach

Outdoor Activities
Filiatro Beach, situated 3km east of Vathy, is a popular destination for both locals and tourists due to its proximity to the main port. The shallow waters make it safe for families, and amenities like sunbeds, parasols, and beach bars/restaurants ensure a convenient day out. The beach boasts clear waters, smooth pebbles, and stunning surroundings typical of Ithaka. Accessible by car with ample parking, the walk from the main town offers spectacular views.
Gorgeous beach with clear blue waters. Decent amount of free parking right next to the beach. There are showers, and the cafe/restaurant has toilets. Very little natural shade, so bring your own umbrella or pay for sunbeds (5 euros each). The far end of the beach has olive trees amongst the sunbeds, so offers a bit more shade. Great snorkelling amongst the varied rock formations.
Howard W — Google review
Best beach on the island that I went to (I went to four total to spend time, but crossed many others during our stay). First of all, it has toilets. One for each gender, and then another outside toilet that I suppose anyone can use. They were clean and well facilitated, with inside and outside sinks and soap. They were clean and had waste bins for the toilet paper. The ladies toilet only flushed once out of the many times I used it over the visits to the beach. It has a car park, very important. It's free and it's right next to the beach. No hills or walking anywhere. It's a PEBBLE beach, like the rest of Ithaca, but if you go down the end of the beach it is a little more sandy. Better for going into the water easier. Still, bring water shoes. There is some wood to walk on around by the bar but the rest you're just fighting for your life on stones. There is a bar and a beach hut that sells food, drinks, hats, inflatables etc. There is also a place to rent boats and beach chairs. It was quiet, no loud music and no one was playing their own. It was tranquil. Has a swing, has beanbags, and a wooden boat (on land) with cushions and blankets to sit on. Plenty of shade and plenty of sun spots. If you are going with a member of the family who can't sit still, I would not recommend this one. There is nowhere to walk to, and up the mountain is overgrown, prickly and has high spiders with webs as thick as cotton. You're pretty much secluded on the beach. It is a little difficult to get to, but that's only because Google maps WILL try to get you to drive up public stairs in Vathy. It is just one road after that and is sign-posted. Steep hill down. Saw some goats on the road. The best beach for fish, the cleanest water with the most variety of fish. Can be seen from just standing/sitting in it too, meaning if you can't or don't like going underwater, you can still see them.

Easy access to the beach. Almost easy parking. There is also a beach bar ,but you can put your sets all around the beach

Crystal blue water, surrounded by wild hills. Nice bay and a good service by Kirki. A lot of yachts parking there. I like swimming there mostly at evening

I found all the reviews about this spot quite appealing so I made it down there - hands up, such a beaut beach!!! You can park the car, plus the beach features services such as a bar, toilets, etc.

Papingo Rock Pools, located between the villages of Megalo and Mikro Papingo in western Zagori, offer a refreshing escape. The clear, somewhat cold water flows down from the mountains, forming natural pools among limestone rocks. Visitors can swim and cool off in these deep pools while surrounded by stunning natural beauty. The area is popular during the summer months and features impressive rock formations throughout.
If you are around zaguria region which is lovely with astonishing views and charming small towns , do not miss this point. take a short time for it , it is not so big, maybe 20 min easy walk each side but gorgeous. water streams surrounded by stones and walls. a magic place.

What a sight! Short hike along beautiful clear rock pools with the amazing local striated rocks. Recommend wearing sneakers if you plan to go far back. This place was great, cool in the shade. Formed through both natural and human made interventions.
Jennifer H — Google review
Beautiful nature point on the road side to micro papaginko. Nature carved a small water way in between rock walls that are built from layers of straightstone plates. Now its end of September and there is only a very little amount of water yet it is enough to seat, listen and relax.
Uri M — Google review
Imagine a landscape straight out of a fairy tale. Impressive rocks sculpted by nature, forming small, crystal-clear 'pools'. The feeling is magical, as if you're in a hidden secret of Pindos.
Gioftsios A — Google review
A beautiful game of nature in the heart of Pindos Mountains. The water made its way through the rocks the last 200 million years and made some breathtaking formations of stone. I guess in some years the water is more and in some others less, regarding how much it rained. So don't get disappointed if the water is less. Enjoy this majestical work of nature.
Marios T — Google review
A beautiful landscape of successive natural pools formed within the rock by the constant flow of the stream. Hopefully it will keep on flowing.... Do respect the environment if you go. No littering, no sunblock in such delicate surroundings.
George S — Google review
In the summer (Augest) the pools are not realy fool. There is 1 big pool that is great. Its fun to go as far as you could but at some point you need snapling equipment to continue. Its a great location sins its only 10 min walk from your car

A short walk to bathe in the cool river water and enjoy the natural rock pools. There were very few people there and it was very pleasant to explore the area

Wonderful way to understand the background around the ancient city of Olympia, the home of the Olympic Games. We loved the simple explanations written in several different languages. Going to the museum allow us to get so much more out of our visit to the archaeological site and the rest of Olympia

Visited during the weekday; lots of buses with tourists from cruises. I recommend coming after 12pm as the groups left and also as it gets hotter outside you get a cool room to walk. The displays are typically well presented and annotated with brief useful descriptions.
Dominik D — Google review
Great collection, wonderfully displayed, excellent facilities. One can only begin to imagine the sheer volume of wealth, artifacts and other objects of artistic and material value that used to be here, the penultimate location of reverence in all the ancient Greek world. All the way through the Archaic, the Classical and the Hellenistic Period, which add up to more than half a millenia, the Hellenes accumulated offerings to Zeus, Hera and many other Gods in this holiest of locations. Even after eons of plundering, this site has offered us all these magnificent exhibits. Enjoy them!
George S — Google review
Definitely worth a visit. We stayed at villa kriton so if you are still looking for a place I can recommend that. Free if you are under 25 and EU member. We didn’t buy the tickets before hand and just bought them at the museum. We recommend going a little later 5pm was perfect for us almost now people at the sight and the temperature was fine.

One of the most historically significant places in the world. If your into mythology or the Olympics or maybe just a history buff this is the place for you. Together with the site of old Olympia this stop is simply amazing. Much more still exists than I ever imagined after almost 3000 years. Highly recommended.
Jason G — Google review
Part of archaeological site of olympia beautiful place. Shame a lot have been looted years ago. Would have been great if there was an audio devices to explain as its very difficult to get near some and read the information when someone parked in front of the object. I found more QR codes would have been useful to read it latter. Worth visit even if a lot of objects have been looted over the years of excavations. French, German archaeologist.
Vicky — Google review
Learned a great amount of history about the origin of the Olympics. Had a tour guide and highly recommend using one or all you will be seeing are a bunch of ruins. The stories behind the ruins are needed. Also, was treated to a Greek lunch and entertaing dancing.
George M — Google review
It’s a very beautiful modern building. The moment you enter you can tell that the exhibition is well organised. It’s a lot to look at but occasionally there are paragraphs on the wall about the time the artefacts are from. The translations are in Greek, English and German. It’s very educational and if you‘re visiting the archeological site the museum is a must! For example: The Nike statue. It stood in front of the Zeus temple and is now a part of the museum. It definitely is worth the experience and even if you‘re not a fan of history there’s just generally a lot to look at and it’s quite beautiful. I would recommend going at around 11 am because later in the day there‘ll be more visitors but I couldn’t complain.

Church of Saint Andrew

Sights & Landmarks
Churches & Cathedrals
The Holy Church of Saint Andrew is a Byzantine-style basilica and pilgrimage site located in Patras, Greece. It features a gold-plated cross and 13 domes, as well as housing holy relics, including the head of Saint Andrew. The church is known for its impressive size and unique architectural elements, such as a wooden screen. Visitors are captivated by the beautiful mosaic art inside the church.
An amazing Greek Orthodox cathedral dedicated to St. Andrew, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus. Besides the awe-inspiring murals and mosaics decorating the interior, there are also relics of St. Andrew such as part of the top of his cranium and small portions of the cross on which he was crucified. There is a visitors center outside the church as well as restrooms and a gift shop.
Anthony D — Google review
Saint Andrew Church in Patras is definitely impressive in size—it’s the biggest church in Greece. The building looks grand from the outside, and the mosaics inside are nice. That said, it doesn’t feel particularly special or memorable, especially compared to some of the older, more historic churches in Greece. Still worth a quick visit if you’re in the area, but don’t expect to be blown away.
Evgeniya K — Google review
This is one of the most impressive cathedrals in the world. It is being build for over a century. Located next to the old St Andrews Church and the sacred cave where Saint Andrews use to live. The place of the church is the place of his martyrdom where the Romans crucified him on a saltire (X-shaped cross). The cathedral is home to the remains of the saint (see photo with the silver case in the shape of the church) and the remains of the cross (in the saltire casing). Visiting the place after 25 years was a pilgrimage.
Vassilis M — Google review
The Church of Saint Andrew in Patras is one of the most magnificent and spiritually uplifting places I have ever visited. As the largest Orthodox church in Greece, it impresses not only through its monumental architecture but also through the deep sense of peace that permeates every corner. The interior is breathtaking — a masterpiece of Byzantine-inspired design, adorned with splendid frescoes, marble columns, and intricate mosaics that narrate sacred stories in vivid color. The grand dome, depicting Christ Pantocrator, dominates the space and leaves visitors in awe. The golden chandeliers, icons, and marble iconostasis all contribute to an atmosphere that feels both majestic and profoundly sacred. Of particular note is the chapel containing the relics of Saint Andrew the Apostle — the patron saint of Patras and one of the first disciples of Christ. The ornate reliquary cross and the relics themselves are beautifully displayed, radiating a strong sense of reverence and historical continuity. Every detail of the church — from the carved icon stands to the illuminated murals — speaks of centuries of faith and devotion. Whether you come as a pilgrim or simply as a traveler interested in history and architecture, the Church of Saint Andrew offers a moving experience that transcends time and culture. Visiting this holy site is not just a cultural encounter, but a deeply spiritual journey — a place where art, history, and faith unite in perfect harmony. Truly, a must-see landmark in Greece and a profound tribute to the enduring legacy of Saint Andrew the Apostle.

Such a beautiful church and apparently the biggest in Greece! No need to pay to come in. The history of it is just amazing: search it! It’s totally worth it
Kéké — Google review
The church is renowned as the largest Orthodox church in Greece, with some sources noting it as the third or fourth largest Byzantine-style church in the Balkans. It hosts a massive central dome soaring to 46 m in height, crowned by a 5 m gold-plated cross, with 12 smaller crosses above the bell towers symbolizing Christ and the Apostles Religious Greece Greek City Times The vast interior spans approximately 1,900 m² (with an additional 700 m² on the upper level) and can accommodate around 7,000 worshippers If you're drawn to monumental architecture, intricate Byzantine art, and the spiritual resonance of sacred relics, the Cathedral of Saint Andrew in Patras is absolutely worth visiting. It offers a serene, awe-inspiring experience-even if you're not religious. But if you're seeking the quaint charm or medieval atmosphere of ancient churches, consider pairing this visit with stops at Patras's older sacred sites.

A breathtaking place. The initial construct is an architectural marvel built within a spectacular natural setting. Believer or not, you will enjoy this place. The magnificent natural environment on the route adds to the experience. The narrow roads require caution, especially to inexperienced drivers.

It s always a treat to visit this monastery and chapel. Everything is so meticulous. There was a bit of rain so took umbrellas to walk the 300 meters from the parking lot. It was quiet which gave us plenty of time to enjoy the church. Enjoyed the bread samples and the Turkish Delight which they offer. This is the third time web have visited.

The Monastery of Proussos was named from the Icon of Panagia Prousiotissa from Proussa in Minor Asia. It is a historic building that has kept expanding due to donations. The location is impressive and it can get very busy as buses arrive from all over the world to visit this. We loved the old clock and the oldest part of the monastery. One star less as it looked more like a business modern monastery that does not fit with the older part of the church. Still architectonically it is beautiful and you should definitely visit it.
Fraus L — Google review
Beautiful monastry with a very old and small church with the ancient icon of The Holy Mother. A bit crowdy and hard to reach but very rewarding if you do the effort to come there.

Α very beautiful monastery surrounded by a majestic natural environment.
Theoharry G — Google review
Apart from the monastery and the intriguing history of its namesake, Panaghia Prousiotissa (an icon of the Virgin Mary that originated in Proussa, Asia Minor), the surrounding area is gorgeous. Below the curvy road that leads to the monastery and cut into the mountainside, lies a river with turquoise waters that can be viewed throughout the drive. There are also interesting stops along the way -- like the "Virgin's footsteps." The monastery is just 35 kilometers from Karpenissi, a winter haven for snow skiing, as well as all-season hiking and exploring. Overall a must-do excursion.
Nancy S — Google review
Very beautiful monastery in a special location. It's amazing the feeling you get when you get there and face it. We enjoyed the view, we learned the history of the monastery from a monk who wanted to explain it to us. Information: Better not to bother the monks unless they show you they are available. Some are there to get away from other people and get closer to god through prayer.

The Charilaos Trikoupis Rio - Antirrio Bridge, also known as the Rion-Antirion Bridge, is a stunning feat of engineering that gracefully spans the Gulf of Corinth. Completed in 2004, this cable-stayed bridge connects the Peloponnese to mainland Greece and features four impressive Delta-shaped pillars supporting its massive cables. With a main span stretching over 2,252 meters, it stands as one of the longest multi-span bridges globally.
A wonderful infrastructure and worth to visit. Specially from the rio-antirrio ferries, the view is mesmerising. I have a lot of memories during my study in University of Patras.

A beautiful bridge, we used it to drive from Kyllini to Preveza area. The toll was 15.40 euro for a car one way, but there is no warning of the price until you're almost across. There are ferries as an alternate option although I don't know the price. A quick and easy way to travel.

Dragon's Cave, located near Lake Orestiada and just a short distance from Kastoria, is one of Greece's newest and most remarkable caves. It boasts seven underground lakes, 10 chambers, and five tunnels adorned with stunning stalactites and stalagmites. The well-lit pathways and stairs make it easy to explore this natural wonder. Visitors are treated to an informative display of photos and descriptions at the exit hallway.
Maybe it's not the biggest cave in Greece but surely is the most attractive one, since the scenery completely changes all the time. It includes 7 lakes too. The presentation is wonderfull with recorded tour, nice lighting and a safe route to visit. Totally worth it
Makgreece — Google review
I've been to several caves in my travels and this may be the very best. It's well laid out, easily accessible, well illuminated and the formations are close enough to the path that you can fully appreciate their beauty. Tip: Rent a bike and make this stop part of your trip around the peninsula. The terrain is flat and it's a beautiful, quiet and peaceful trip that's easily completed within a couple of hours, including stops. Perfect for relatively inexperienced cyclists.
Jonathan K — Google review
Great place to visit. A luxury tour where we were the only ones in a cave listening to the guide from the speakers in our native language. The cave isn't big but it's totally worth it. Definitely recommend for a visit. Thank you for a wonderful hospitality!
Natalja S — Google review
Took about 20 or so minutes to go through the cave system. Everything was paved with concrete real well and easy to navigate. There are some steps in it and some areas are slippery with some moisture but nothing serious. Our tour was self guided as they graciously played an audio recording throughout the cave in English so we could understand the areas and the history of the cave. We were grateful they did this for people that only spoke English. The areas were all very interesting and unique in their own way. Some had water, some had more stalagmites/stalagtites than others and some had larger open areas. Very unique place to visit while up in Kastoria. Such a beautiful area!

Interesting cave. You can take a taxi going here or just walk if its a good day. One of the highlights when visiting Kastoria. It takes about 20 minutes to explore inside the cave. Very well lit and safe. They play the audio guide in different languages. Just let them know which language you prefer.

This was a great place to visit, the formations in the cave were beautiful. It was informative too, and you get to learn about the cave through a speaker as you walk through. You do get a limited time however, around 15 minutes before you get hurried along. I think this was good though as it's not too busy when you are in there. Would recommend when in Kastoria.

The Holy Monastery Great Meteoron -Transfiguration of the Saviour, established in the 14th century, is the largest and most visited out of six active monasteries in Meteora. Perched on top of Broad Rock over 600 meters above sea level, it requires ascending 115 steps to reach. Despite being a popular stop for tour buses, it's recommended to visit early or late in the day due to crowds and limited parking.
Amazing. Meteora is world famous for its six Eastern Orthodox monasteries that are perched atop gigantic rock pillars in the mountains. The monasteries are world heritage listed; and are absolutely amazing…. certainly a “must see”. All have been around for some hundreds of years; and it is incredible to imagine that they were built so long ago. First, we visited the Holy Monastery of the Great Meteoron. It is so calm and peaceful although it can be quite crowded at times - so pick your arrival times carefully. There is a very strict dress code to enter (we came prepared) and some of the monasteries are REALLY hard work to get to. Lots of steps; Lots of rests; Lots of sweat … but we made it.
Norm P — Google review
The Great Meteoron Monastery is an incredible place to visit and truly lives up to its name. We reached it by hiking through the forest from Kastraki, and the walk was magical – quiet, scenic, and full of breathtaking views of the rocks and valleys. The monastery itself is steeped in history, with beautifully preserved frescoes, impressive architecture, and interesting exhibits that give you a real sense of the past. The views from the top are simply unforgettable. It’s a bit of a workout to get there, but the experience is one you’ll remember forever.
Sofie S — Google review
A beautiful and well-preserved monastery with many authentic and original details. The real highlight is the rock formations. We visited in autumn, and the mix of colorful leaves, green bushes, and stone cliffs was breathtaking. You can see the monasteries on top of the rocks without needing drones. A truly magical place.

Great view and a well preserved monastery. God bless all the people. Many visitors during visit, can be crowded, make sure to grab a bottle of water before you go up there. Enjoy the view and pray for all. Amen

Calm and peacefull place with astonishing views..although its quite crowded in day time. Maybe theres less people in the morning..Dont forget to wear longpant and women - a dress covering legs and shoulders. Be respectfull for the rules inside, this is a place not for selfies or photos but fot prayer and meditation.
Sarunas K — Google review
Great views and beautiful monastery. Went early morning as it is quite a lot of steps down & up to get to the entrance. Entrance fee was €5, as with the other monasteries. There is a nice, large gift shop here with a variety of religious gifts, honey, wines, soaps etc.
Liezl L — Google review
The most popular monastery at Meteora, and I can see why. Despite the many steps to get to the top, there were tons of people walking up and down. The views are incredible, they have various museums inside the walls, and plenty of art inside the churches. This one was the most complete in terms of showing you the historical way of life of the monks living there.

Nestled in the heart of central Greece, Meteora is a breathtaking destination that captivates visitors with its towering rock formations and ancient monasteries. This UNESCO World Heritage site features six Eastern Orthodox monasteries perched atop colossal sandstone cliffs, creating a surreal landscape that feels almost otherworldly. The name "Meteora," meaning 'lofty' or 'elevated,' perfectly encapsulates the essence of this stunning locale.
Super amazing places. Lots of history at these monasteries and it's a wonder at how they were able to build them so high up. There's is an admission fee at each monastery. Also there are some light dress codes so please look up. There is parking around each area but be forewarned there are tons of people that visit this and many shuttle buses so you will more than likely have to park a distance and walk. There are also many stairs at a couple of them to get up to so it may be difficult for some. There is a total of 6 monasteries that you can visit. It does get very busy and even arriving earlier it still seemed very full. Would be interesting to go with a tour guide so you can hear more of the details of the place as there is not a lot in English. Such an amazing place and I would highly recommend visiting here if you can.

This is a truly surreal and stunning experience. Highly recommend at least once on your life. We took a tour bus which on total is a 11 hr day but totally worth it with no hassle. Costs £5 each to enter each mosque.

Great place for a day trip. If you are driving, you will enjoy the wide and safe road. You can go to the top by driving your car. Hiking route is also available. Overall, the scenic view is breathtaking and humans capability of building churches and residences are absolutely surreal!

An amazing experience - far exceeded our expectations. We visited St Nicholas & Varlaam monastries. St Nicholas was small with lots of steps but was fantastic. Not very busy. Varlaam was larger & easier to access. The art work in both is stunning. Having a guide to explain was useful. The views are breathtaking.

Meteora is home to some truly impressive monasteries. For women, skirts are required; if you don’t have one, they are provided at the entrance. The entrance fee is €5 per person. Note that each monastery closes one day per week, so plan accordingly. Be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

Perched on a cliff, the Monastery of Varlaam is a stunning 14th-century monastery featuring a chapel adorned with frescoes and an intriguing museum. Rebuilt in the 16th century, it stands as the second-largest monastery in Meteora. Visitors can explore the museum to gain insight into the monks' daily life and their path to becoming monks. It's important for women to wear long skirts or purchase pareos at the entrance if not dressed appropriately.
Visited the monastery during a pilgrimage tour of Greece this summer. Before going, we were told by our guide that all the women had to wear skirts and the men long pants. Once we were in the complex, we were in awe at the location being on the top of the mountain. We also learned that before a stone staircase was built, the monks used a pulley system to bring supplies and themselves up to the building. The museum inside showcased the daily lives of the monks and the inner prayer chambers were spectacular. A great experience for everyone.
Anthony D — Google review
The monastery is very beautiful, and the museum is worth a visit as well. It has a dress code requiring women to cover their arms and legs, and men to cover their legs. While the rules are not strictly enforced, coverings can be borrowed if needed. Some visitors are checked more closely than others. From the monastery, you also get a wonderful view, and the stairs are easier to manage than expected.
Julian — Google review
This monastery is a must. One of the biggest and most impressive ones. It holds a church with great byzantine art, and also a very interesting museum with ancient books, customs, artifacts and even video clips showing the life in the monastery 100+ years ago. There is also the winery with its huge wine barrel and the old man operated lift. You really had to trust your friends back there... Photography is allowed only in part of the monastery.

Varlaam Monastery is one of the most impressive and beautifully preserved monasteries in Meteora. We walked from the town of Kastraki through the forest to get there, and the journey itself was absolutely beautiful – peaceful, green, and full of incredible views along the way. The monastery at the top is rich in history, with stunning frescoes, well-kept grounds, and a calm, spiritual atmosphere. The panoramic views from above are breathtaking and make the climb completely worth it. A must-visit when exploring Meteora – both majestic and deeply peaceful.
Sofie S — Google review
We visited only two monasteries and this was one of them. We arrived around 10 am on Saturday morning and although there were crowds it got even more crowded when we were about to leave at 11 am. It is easily accessible and there is decent amount of parking places and parking is free.
Merjem H — Google review
As with the other monasteries of the meteora, it is built for worship like a fort. Initally it was accessible only through the main tower with the use of a rope net. The stairway in use today is a rather recent addition. What you are about to experience is astonishing architecture upon an impossible location with view to a landscape that seems carved out of divine imagination at its best. Magnificent religious artifacts, ancient scriptures and other interesting items exhibited are a bonus. Enjoy!... but do so respectfully. This is a home and a place of prayer for people fully devoted into this way of life.
George S — Google review
A beautiful monastery with amazing views and rich history. Entry is €5 per person (cash only), the same as at the Great Meteoron. Souvenirs here are noticeably more expensive compared to those at the Great Meteoron, but the visit itself is worth it

Yes, I'm reviewing a mountain. Not my first mountain either, although I haven't reviewed Kilimanjaro yet. Ok, it's a an actual mountain, summit above the tree line, though only 2918 meters (9.578 ft), no snow up there but plenty of wind and temps are way lower than at the bottom. It's about 25,000 steps to the top, almost all of them ascending, of course, over often technical rock and rooty trails. I suppose it could be done in a day, up and down, doubling the steps. but not by me. I'm 76 and two days were definitely necessary. There's a hut not far from the summit, very basic, with: • surprisingly good fresh food throughout the day and evening, staring with coffee at 6:30 am (and not a moment before) • yes they take cards, tho I was told sometimes the payment terrminals or internet connection don't work, so bring at least 25 Euro as backup • unheated rooms containing 8-12 cots, where you could end up trying to sleep next to someone snoring like a 500 lb boor, as I did. Not pleasant. Bring ear plugs.

The tavern is traditionally cozy, and the food and service are excellent. The prices are reasonable and reflect the quality of the overall experience. The setting in the old town and the surrounding buzz create a typically Greek atmosphere that you will enjoy. I recommend the place and am glad we stopped by for lunch.

It is designed in an eclectic style which combines elements from both the Byzantine and Western architectures. This waterfront square is one of the prominent places in Greece, and forms an important part of life in Thessaloniki with some of the city's most beautiful buildings and sights. The central square serves the need for leisure and commerce with numerous choices of shops, cafes and stylish bars while at the same time offering wonderful sea views. The square is a must visit place for those who arrive in Thessaloniki, Greece.

It's a nice place to walk, especially when it's sunny. There are lots of delicious coffees and food options for breakfast. It looks nice at night as well, close to everything

Our hotel overlooks Aristotle Square, which is a huge public square lined by various restaurants; and which appears to be a major ‘go to’ place for locals and visitors alike. Very popular as the heat of the day dissipates.

A beautiful and lively spot in the heart of Thessaloniki! The square has lovely architecture, great cafés, and an amazing sea view. It’s perfect for a walk, coffee, or just relaxing and watching the city life. Especially nice in the evening when the lights come on. Definitely worth a visit!

Aristotle Square is a beautiful place. The crowd is quite crowded. It's close to the sea. It has its own flair. It is definitely worth a visit if you are in Thessaloniki.

Sights & Landmarks
The White Tower of Thessaloniki is a historic Ottoman fortress and former prison that now houses an interactive exhibition showcasing the city's rich history. Situated on the city's waterfront, this iconic landmark was once part of a larger fortification and is believed to have been built in the fifteenth century after the Turkish conquest of Thessaloniki. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the sea from this location, making it a popular spot for enjoying drinks while taking in the scenery.
The most famous landmark of Thessaloniki with great panoramic views from the top. Inside you’ll find a small but interesting museum about the city’s history. Entry is €8, which is maybe a little bit expensive for the experience and the views
Aleksandra M — Google review
On the one hand, you must go here when visiting Thessaloniki. It is the most famous landmark of the city and has a lot of history attached to it. On the other hand, it is rather expensive (at €8) for what is a relatively small (but interesting) museum. But I have to say that the views from the top are terrific. So Yes - go!
Norm P — Google review
A wonderful place to visit! The White Tower is full of history and beautifully presented inside with clear displays and interactive exhibits. The climb to the top is easy, and the view over Thessaloniki and the sea is absolutely stunning. The staff were friendly and helpful. Definitely a must-see landmark when visiting the city!
Sabri F — Google review
Excellent attraction..6euro entry p.p. The walk up tonthe top with its several rooms and chambers along the way was really well worth it. You could easily spend 2 hours here going through the various write-ups & history. Some audio on English via your phone was available at key points. The views from the top are amazing. You see the length & breadth of the coast line and nearby hils. Apparantly you can see Mt. Olympus on a clear day...we were not so lucky.
Percy T — Google review
This is a must when visiting Thessaloniki! The ticket is 6€ and children under 18 don't pay the ticket. This isn't just a place where you go for the view from the top (even though it's very beautiful), but it's also a museum. You have a couple of stops before you reach the top where you can learn more about the history lf Thessaloniki. You also get a free audio guide available in many languages free of charge! I couldn't recommend this place enough.
Nataša K — Google review
A lovely place to walk around and enjoy the sea breeze. The view from the top is stunning, especially at sunset. Definitely one of Thessaloniki’s highlights!

Entering inside the museum (6€ regular ticket) you can select from 13 languages in which to learn and understand better the history, culture, life, culinary, evolution of the city during your way up trough the seven levels to the top. The observation terrace is a perfect selfie's spot and also a greate way to orientate yourself in the next directions trough your journey felling in love with Thessaloniki... Enjoy!
Vanya M — Google review
A must place to visit if in town for the first time. The tower is multi leveled with each level having an exhibition of the city's history. It's not tiresome to climb as there are no steep steps and you have to stop to see the exhibits. At the top one can enjoy the excellent view of the city and the bay. There is also a museum shop that was not operating on the day we visited.

Sights & Landmarks
The Holy Church of Saint Demetrius, Patron Saint of Thessalonica, is a significant ancient Christian church with a rich history. Built on the site of an ancient Roman bath house, it houses the body of Saint Demetrius, a Roman soldier martyred in AD 306. The church features an underground crypt where the martyrdom took place and relics of Saint Demetrius in a silver reliquary.
An amazing church that I had the opportunity to see while on pilgrimage in Greece. Dating back to the 7th century, this church has breathtaking murals from the Byzantine period and several holy relics of saints. Overall a great visit.
Anthony D — Google review
This is the main church in Thessaloniki, where Saint Demetrius is buried. The architecture is excellent, and the temple is beautifully and richly decorated inside as well. There is no entrance fee. There is a souvenir shop inside and outside. There are often tourist tours.
Spase M — Google review
One of the most important churches in Thessaloniki, dedicated to the city’s patron saint. The interior is beautiful, with impressive mosaics and a crypt that holds deep historical and spiritual significance. Entrance is free, and it’s a must-visit for anyone exploring the city

We visited on 26 of October, even we came quite early it was overcrowded, not surprising since almost all Thessaloniki was there, including us came from abroad! We highly recommend to visit it, but please come on the service days earlier in order to find a place... I also recommend a small shop at the right corner of the church, it has much spiritual attributes, ikons, crosses, and even books! I found all the books of St Paisios only 15 Eur per one, so is the first place I recommend to visit in Thessaloniki! We definitely plan to come back again 🇨🇾🫶🏻

Don’t be afraid to put your trainers on and walk — Thessaloniki is full of beautiful churches, and the Holy Church of Saint Demetrius is definitely one not to miss! The architecture is stunning, and the atmosphere inside feels so peaceful and full of history. You can easily spend some time just admiring the mosaics and details. It’s also free to enter, which makes it even better! If you’re exploring Thessaloniki, make sure to add this to your walking route — it’s a lovely stop that gives you a real sense of the city’s culture and spirituality. Instagram mrsivyhyde

Petralona Cave

Mentioned on

Historical landmark
Nature & Parks
Petralona Cave, situated 50 km from Thessaloniki, is a fascinating prehistoric site discovered in 1959. It gained fame in 1960 when the oldest European man's fossilized skull was found there, along with evidence of ancient fire use. The cave features remarkable stalactites and stalagmites that captivate both adults and children. With a length of about 2 km, it offers an exciting excursion suitable for young visitors as well.
Considering that one of the main attractions in the Nea Kallikrateia area is the Petralona cave, we decided to go and visit it. It is located 15 km away from Nea Kallikrateia, about 15-20 minutes by car. Direct access by car is restricted for the last 800-900 meters by a barrier, being directed to a parking lot from where you can take a mini train for 3 euros per person round trip. In the parking lot there are a few souvenir shops, magnets, etc. you know the type. The mini train leaves every 10-15 minutes and covers the distance mentioned above, to the cave area. There is also a terrace here where you can wait for the entrance to the cave. It cost us 10 euros per person for adults, so 20 euros and free for children under 18. The entrance to the cave is only with a guide, on a pre-established route that goes up and down about 350 meters through the cave. The guide provides a series of information in English and much more in Greek and ensures that the group respects the predefined route. The cave, discovered in 1959, is spectacular and offers you an example of what the elements of nature can do over thousands of years. The merit of the Greeks is that they highlighted it by arranging a portion of the cave. You can find more details about the cave online. However, the fact that it seems like a well-planned Greek "business" does not detract from the beauty of the cave and its surroundings
Soe S — Google review
Beautiful and family-friendly cave experience! Petralona Cave was absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit. The temperature inside is a comfortable +17°C all year round, so there’s no need to dress warmly. The entrance fee was €10 for adults, and seniors (65+) paid €5 — we visited in the off-season. Children under 18 enter for free, which was great for us since we had a baby and a 3-year-old with us. The cave itself is relatively small and compact — perfect for kids. The loop path takes around 20 minutes to complete, with many stunning formations to admire. Some parts of the path are a bit narrow, but still manageable. In front of the cave, there’s a kiosk and a picnic/waiting area with an incredible view of the surrounding area and the sea — perfect for watching the sunset! We enjoyed some ice cream and coffee from the kiosk while waiting for our tour to start. You can either take a short walk (about 800m) up to the cave or use the little transfer train from the parking area. The round trip on the train costs €3 per person, and children under 3 go free. We didn’t visit the museum (it requires a separate ticket), but overall, the service was friendly, and the experience was great — highly recommend it, especially for families!
Reelika E — Google review
A great change in scenery. It is a great place to take a break on a hot day - other than on a beach or inside. Things go fast even on a busy day and rather affordable (€10 for the cave, €5 for the museum and €3 for the train). Tour is 20 - 30 minutes without guide (for our group). I would recommend the museum first and cave after. Outside view is nice, too. The terrace near the entrance is a nice place to enjoy a drink.
Andrei C — Google review
The weather was bad so we decided to visit the caves after looking on google. The car park is a basic dirt road and we did struggle to get parked. Some cute little souvenir shops reasonably priced…again basic but fine. We got the train to the caves which took a couple of minutes and cost a few euros each. Once you are at the top to the entrance of the cave it is quite exposed with a couple of shelters, a coffee shack and reasonably clean toilets. Once we had paid there was a little wait before the last group came out of the cave, around 10 minutes or so. Once we were in the cave we were memorised!! What an amazing place! Really cleverly lit with secure steps throughout. We loved every second of it with such amazing photo opportunities. It was like being in another world. We were encouraged to stay with the group but we wanted to stay longer hehe! We walked back to the car chatting about our amazing experience!
Jessica G — Google review
Great fan of stalagtites/stalagmites caves, so we had to visit this one and it is definitely worth the trip. Currently, the entrance fee is 10 Euro (Oct 2025). Since we have been there close to the end of the season our group was comfortably small (I can imagine that in the summertime the visit will be very crowdy and not so quiet and comfortable). There is a parking lot (with some deserted tourist shops close by) and the possibility to be carried the 300 or so meters to the cave by a small train. Otherwise it's a 10 min walk slightly up the hill. After buying the tickets we had to wait a bit, approx. 10-15 min until enough people had gathered for the tour. The cave itself and all the formations were so amazing, I enjoyed it very much. The guide explained everything in greek and english. Whole tour is about 1 km and approx. 30 min. We did not visit the small museum with the bone collections, because we were more interested in the formations, but this would have been possible with a 5-euro fee and approx. 20 min.
DrEnzMon — Google review
The cave was impressive, interesting. They really tried to make the trails comfortable and safe. There is a good kiosk at the top of the entrance where you can get delicious coffee. There are toilets. The area is well-maintained. Unfortunately, we had a guide who was either tired or not interested in telling us anything. I recommend finding the information on the Internet in advance and reading it, it will probably be more interesting that way.
Karlis B — Google review
This is an incredible cave and there is a great museum on site too. Both have recently reopened after significant renovation. There is s short walk uphill from the car park. Alternatively you can take the land train. There is a coffee shop and toilets outside the cave and also near the car park
Gill P — Google review
Very beautiful caves and the tour is quick. You must take the little train up to the caves. One ticket is 3 euros there and back, but you will not have to walk up hill in the sun. The tickets per adult are 10 euros for the caves and 5 euros for the museum. The tour is quick and the path inside is very well made.

Agios Ioannis Beach, located in the northwestern side of Sithonia and closest to Thessaloniki, is a popular sandy stretch with gentle waves. While the former Riviera Luxury Beach Bar has been removed due to hotel construction, the beach remains unspoiled and free for everyone. Visitors can enjoy hip beach bars like Manassu Beach Bar, MOA Beachbar, Orca Bar, and more. The water is clear with a bottom covered in tiny pebbles.
A very beautiful beach with blue waters, very clean and quiet even with a lot of people around you. Warm request: take the trash with you when you leave...respect the beautiful gifts of nature!!! PS: Take the exit on the right of "Akti Kastri" one step before the hotel's entrance...take with you umbrellas, food, coffee, and water.

Loved this beach. Easy access, large free parking lot. It is very large, approx 750 m long and quite wide. Crystal clear water in the most beautiful shades of blue and turquoise. Swimming, snorkeling and walking along the water there was just perfect.
Dominika N — Google review
Water is perfect but the beach is wild. There are some trees around nothing special, just a simple beach. This year because of higher prices of umbrellas and sun-beds many people prefer to use free of charge beaches, as this one. It is a pity that people do not preserve the area. We saw many cigarettes and other trash around. There is no toilette on the beach and nothing to buy around. Need to go prepared with everything you need for a stay- water, food, umbrella. Some tourists go on big loud companies and the area gets overcrowded fast, especially in high season.

one of the best beaches i have been. positive: not very crowded (status 29 September) super clear water. small sand without rocks negative: No WC no parking space is quite small, it got full even in end of september, i think in July august would be super packed you need to go down on a bit step road to get to the beach see photos for more details

Free parking and public beach is on the right side (if you are facing the see). Sea is turquoise with sand bottom and beach is mostly sand (tiny pebbles only). There are no facilities on the public side.

Nice and clean beach under place Nikiti. There is big parking lot so you can always find place to park your car. Clean water and pure sea. If you go ahead right you will find rock and one small island so it is also good for diving! Recommendation!

Awesome beach, free of bars and commercial bloatware. Long sand line, free and easily accessible parking. Clear water and a lot of locals.

The sea is amazing, with beautiful colors, and the beach isn’t too crowded in September. The problem is unpolite people that leave trash, plastic bottles, cigarette butts, and other waste on the beach with no respect for the environment.

Very interesting tour - even if you are not so interested in Orthodox and monasteries. You can buy tickets online too, very convenient. There is a cafe inside, where you can get a table on a small terrace ( if you are faster than the rest:)) and enjoy the trip. If you go out from the cafe on the bow of the ship it is beautiful but you can not hear the explanations. Take some cookies with you if you are with kids and try to feed the birds when near the shore - it is a big fun

We bought tickets online for the Blue Lagoon. The boat was comfortable and not too big, there weren't too many people like on other boats, so there was enough space for everyone. The lunch was delicious, served right on the beach. A special thanks to the team, the service was top-notch. Everyone was very friendly, kind, and caring. Highly recommend!

Greece is Bliss! Nirvana and Paradise rolled into one. Mt Athos one day excursion via operator Athos Sea Cruises aboard boat "Captain Fotis" is exceptional for 25-35€ ($30-40). Father/Son Family run business with superb hospitality, customer service, and professional crew. Large Clean, well-maintained ferries with ample room to move around and various seating arrangements. I personally met, chat with at length, and now adore Captain George. Friendly, personable, and loves life to the fullest. Seeing the various monasteries from afar is beautiful and satisfying. They do an excellent program of boarding holy monks and relics to bless those believers of Christianity and Eastern Greek Orthodoxy. You may also purchase a variety of goods such as icons, crosses, incense, olive oils and honey produced by the monks from the Holy Mount Athos. Ouranoupolis is heaven on earth and Drenia/Banana Beach are spiritually uplifting energy healing pools of divine waters. I will return soon and maybe stay forever. Highly recommend!! Eternally grateful and thankful for the blessed experience.

Met all our expectations. Reasonable price for a boat shared with 200 people. Easy to wander across decks for best shots of the Athos scenery, information on monasteries provided in various languages via loudspeakers could be well understood. Monks visit boat for blessings and selling religious items. Relaxed 3 hours despite boat was full, of course nothing intimate or with privacy. Little shop on board.

Ancient Ruins
The Archaeological Site of Philippi, founded in 356 BC by King Philip II and later expanded by the Romans, is a historical gem located on the ancient trade route between Europe and Asia. The site features remnants of old walls, gates, a Forum, Roman cisterns, temples, and early basilicas dating back to the fifth century. Visitors can also explore the Archaeological Museum of Philippi to see sculptures, coins, jewelry, and mosaics from the site's history.
Expansive area to walk through and explore. Very interesting to see how the city was laid out. Not much shade, so be prepared. A nice restaurant is on site for after you visit.
Carl P — Google review
Visited the ancient ruins while on a pilgrimage tour of Greece. The whole site is massive with ruins dating back to the time of St. Paul the Apostle and from the later Byzantine era. It is highly recommended during the summer to wear a hat, bring sunscreen and an umbrella for shade. Highlights included the amphitheater, Byzantine era basilica, the town square and the location of the prison where Paul and Silas were kept in during their stop over in the city. Next to the entrance is a cafe where you can purchase food and drinks.
Anthony D — Google review
Very fun experience overall. Alot of the places to see were closed off for Saftey, and the museum costs alot - 10 euros each on top of the entrance ticket, despite that, the staff Is very nice, a man gave us a tour around a section of the plot, around a tomb. you get an hour or two of walking around and exploring for ten euros and kids go free. I'd recommend strongly, especially if more things open up
Marko M — Google review
I loved visiting here, especially being a Christian and knowing the history of this town. The excavations are only partially done, but you can still get a real feel of what it must have been like. Such a great experience!
Jim R — Google review
This is very important site for Bible story. There are site of prison of Paul & Silas. This is the place that encounter triggered events that led to Paul and Silas being imprisoned. In Acts 16:16, a young slave girl with a spirit of divination, who was earning her masters a lot of money by fortune-telling, met Paul and Silas as they were going to prayer. In Acts 16:23, after being severely flogged, Paul and Silas were thrown into prison and ordered to be guarded carefully by the jailer. On May 18 of 2025, which we visited, Greece celebrates International Museum Day, when museums and archaeological sites are open for free.
Douglas S — Google review
I loved the amphitheatre and it's amazing acoustics! It's insane to experience the "technology" that they had so many years back. We went on our own, so I think we missed a lot of the information, although there were enough signs explaining what you were looking at. The prison of Paul that we were most excited to see, was not much, but it was nice being at the place that he walked and spoke. The price of 10€/person is a bit too much.
Agapi C — Google review
10 euro per person to enter. Worth the excursion. Small village of Krinides nearby for a nice lunch.

A beautiful and big archaeological site worthy visiting. Admission was about $6 Euro per adult. On the day of our visit happened to be a special holiday in April and admission was free. They have lots of displays and explanation signs along the way. Along a QR code to download for more information. It is a fair big area. Do bring comfortable shoes and sun / wind protections. Water for a hot day. You will also find a prison cell label St. Paul’s prison (as Paul was jailed in Philippi according to the Bible) There are restaurants and facilities in the entrance area you can get food and drinks as well. Museums and shops, etc. Highly recommended!

Fortress
Sights & Landmarks
Perched on the peninsula of Panagia, Kavala Fortress is a 15th-century stronghold that offers breathtaking panoramic views and a glimpse into the city's rich history. The fortress has been rebuilt and fortified multiple times throughout history, with its current form reflecting Ottoman reconstruction in 1425. As you explore the cobblestone streets within the fortress, you'll encounter a blend of Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern influences that create a captivating atmosphere.
We went there today with the family. We parked under the fortress and then walked up. The place is very beautiful. There is a restaurant right at the entrance. I think you need about one hour. The views were amazing – really worth it.
Ivan Š — Google review
Very nicely kept. Views from the top of the tower are amazing and this justifies the very steep climb you have to take in order to get to the fortress. But don't skip climbing the tower stairs as it's not nearly the same view from the walls...
Milica K — Google review
It's worth it for the view, although you can see the same view from any high place in the city. The ticket is 5€ per person, which I think is a bit much for one climb up the stairs to the top. Be careful with the stairs, they are steep and narrow, also watch your head (I say this from experience) and if you have claustrophobia don't go in!
V K — Google review
This is one of the city's landmarks that can be seen from everywhere. It is a little difficult to access, due to the small streets and parking restrictions, which is a discomfort for tourists and a great relief after the introduction of the new rules for local citizens. So, it will take you between 10 and 20 minutes of walking and climbing, depending on your pace, until you reach the fortress. There is discomfort when it is a very hot day. Everything else is great. You can get a ticket and enter to learn more about the history and the city. As well as see panoramic views that are revealed from the fortress. There is also a cafe where you can rest and refresh yourself. I recommend visiting it, especially if you are interested in history. This is also a good place for children to learn new information and develop their thinking and imagination.
Vladislav N — Google review
You will have 360 degree view of Kavala city. Entry is 5 € for July’25. Inside of castle, there are not much things to see. Go to tower and the best view is there. Castle is opening at 08:00 which I recommend that time because stairs of tower is quite narrow so that might be trouble if many people there.
Engin A — Google review
Great place and worth the hike up to find it. If you are going solo as I did follow a mixture of google maps but also the local signs, even the ones painted on walls. Following google maps I got to a few dead ends. Entrance costs 4 euro and there is a bar inside! You may need that as I did after the hike up. The Castle itself is interesting but you will have been to many better. The point here is its location at the top and the great views it gives of Kavala. It’s a quiet place with no access for buses full of tourists! The walk down was a lot easier than the walk up and I think in retrospect I should have started from the viaduct from the last arch north to south, or the arch nearest the hill on which is the Fortress.
Richard B — Google review
We enjoyed our visit to the fortress after we found parking. The maps tried to take us up thru very narrow streets which were too narrow for it van . We ended up parking down by the waterfront and walking up because there is no parking at the fortress.
Randal M — Google review
These walls most likely follow the outline of those of ancient Neapolis, as was the name of the city in the Classical era and all the way through the Roman times. Emperor Julian (yes, that one, the one known as the apostate), made some improvements and repairs, as the threat of the barbarian tribes could not be withheld by the defenses along the Danube. Emperor Justinian also included the city in his extensive rebuilding program. So did Romanos Lekapenos, but by this time, the city had been renamed Christopolis. The job must have been a good one, as it was one of the very few fortifications that managed to repel the marauding Catalan Company, even though this occurred 4 centuries after these repairs. Nevertheless, the attack must have taken its toll, as Emperor Andronikos II commissioned repairs shortly afterward. The city held until the late 14th century, when it fell to the Turks, who in turn reconstructed the walls in the early 15th century. Some parts of the outer layers remain, but the citadel is in good condition and has been reconstructed. It offers a wonderful as well as impressive depiction of the fortifications and magnificent viewpoints too. An overall enjoyable experience for all. The only downside is the absence of parking space, but the ascent through the old town has its charm as well.

Its inviting atmosphere attracts visitors looking to relax in nature's embrace.
Alyki Beach is a peaceful and beautiful spot — no waves, calm water, and perfect for swimming. There are just a few places to sit, so it's best to come early. On the left side of the beach, there’s a scenic trail with breathtaking views that’s definitely worth exploring. A quiet gem!
Andrijana A — Google review
The bay itself is beautiful. The beach would be beautiful if it wasn't so ram-packed with beach chairs and umbrellas. You can barely move. Also big boats come in and dump 100s of passengers into the bay. Taverna Leonidas is a lovely place to sit and enjoy lunch, and the archaeological site of Aliki is right next to the beach and worth a visit. Therefore I'd visit the beach if I were visiting the archaeological site, but wouldn't drive here just for the beach - there are better. Parking is up on the main road. There's a quieter beach behind on the others side of the peninsula, 2 min walk from here.

Such a beautiful beach! In the early morning (9 AM) it is not crowded, there is plenty of space where you can choose from. We chose a set of sunbeds which were 20€ per set, without anything included. But the staff there (a lady and a man) are very friendly, attentive. We ordered 2 coffees and a water and they were brought in less than 5 minutes. There are no waves, the water is clear and lean, perfect for kids and families. There are parking spaces along the main road, a couple of minutes apart from the beach.
Cristina B — Google review
To crowdedness for our taste. But other than that, water was perfect until tourist boats came with their garbage which ended up in water. You should definitely come early here in order to park your car. This is a beach for families with children, so if you are not fond of that, avoid it.
Natasa R — Google review
It has nice views but the space is not well maintained, i came back after 2 years and some informative panels are destroyed and vegetation can be irrigated maybe.
AT0M — Google review
We visited Aliki Beach and chose to stay at the middle beach bar with the brown sunbeds. The price for two sunbeds and an umbrella is €20 , this is only for the sunbeds, and anything you order from the bar is not included in this price. The staff makes sure to inform you about this right from the beginning. The prices are very reasonable for a beach bar. Everything was great the staff were friendly, polite, very well organized, and they also speak English very well, which makes communication easy and pleasant. We definitely plan to return!
Eleni K — Google review
It is a wonderful beach with crystal clear water. There are many facilities in the beach with different prices, I recommend the place with the beige sunbeds ( the one next to the brown sunbeds). It had a minimum consumption amount of 30 euros for 2 sunbeds and an umbrella without extra fees so it was great.
Liva Ç — Google review
Excellent for kids, but expensive. First and second rows of sunbeads are minimum consumption 70eur in taverna, other rows were from 50eur, and it is always full. You need to park on the street, and there are a lot of car parks.

Paradise Beach

Mentioned on

Beach
Outdoor Activities
Paradise Beach, located near the settlement of Koinyra on the island of Thassos, is a wide sandy beach with clear and shallow waters. It offers amenities such as a beach bar, sun loungers, umbrellas for rent, and a volleyball court. The idyllic location features crystal-clear waters and dense vegetation that adds to its beauty. Access to the beach is easy despite being about 23 kilometers away from Limenas.
Paradise Beach really lives up to its name. I went there as part of a boat tour and it was one of the best spots we visited. The water was crystal clear and you could see everything, even from above. There were so many colorful fish swimming around and it felt like an aquarium in real life. A bit further out from the beach we even saw dolphins swimming. That moment was just magical. If you like snorkeling or diving this place is perfect. You can explore so much underwater and it is honestly one of the best things to do there. The beach itself is clean, peaceful and really beautiful. But if you go in the middle of summer just be prepared for a lot of tourists. It can be hard to find a free spot to sit and sometimes you have to pay for sunbeds and umbrellas. So it is a good idea to bring your own umbrella and chairs if you want to stay comfortable. I would totally recommend going especially if you are doing a boat tour around the island.
Möchte A — Google review
A beautiful beach worth a visit. There are 2 cafes on it, and in between there are places for tourists who don't want to be in those cafes. The view is beautiful, the water is warm and not too windy, a real paradise. Only the approach to the beach is terrible, if you don't have a good car, be careful! For this reason, I give a rating of 4.
Realist A — Google review
Love this beach. It is in a beautiful setting and is reasonably accessible. It’s especially accommodating and safe for children as it is shallow in many parts. Would highly recommend to visit it.
Alan L — Google review
Nice beach with soft sand and shallow water. There are free areas where you can sit, parking lots and beach bars where you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas as well. After 11:00 it gets pretty crowded.
Christian B — Google review
Parking - many people park on the main road, however when I drove all the way down to the parking next the beach there were 2 parking spaces free. The road down to the beach it steep and sandy/dusty. There is a chance the on the way back some cars might get stuck towards the end. Nature - the sand is very fine, however the beach is not well cleaned. Many sticks, cigarettes, and small pieces of rubbish in the sand. I think that the two beach bars should take better care on the condition of the beach. Beach bars- there are two beach bars. A set of 2 sunbeds and 1 umbrella costs 30 euros and includes 1 drink. At the area of the bars ice bags are not allowed. Shower is ONLY allowed for the people who are paying fot umbrella set. There is no free shower, which is very dissapointing... Sea - the water is clean. The depth is shallow until further in the sea. It is suitable for small children. Overall, it is loud and crowded beach, because of its popularity. Furthermore , because of the policy the the two beach bars, people who are not using the sunbeds feel unwanted on the beach.
Pavel D — Google review
Best beach on Thassos. It has enough space for everyone, even for those who bring their own umbrellas and chairs. It has a big parking area few minutes away from the beach.
Ana R — Google review
My favorite beach in Thassos! Surrounded by greenery, with crystal-clear water and fine sand, it’s simply beautiful. There’s free parking, though the road leading to it isn’t the best – but everything else more than makes up for it. The beach has a spacious free zone and two bars/restaurants. We highly recommend Nikos Bar & Grill.
Anna D — Google review
As the name suggests... Paradise Beach is beautiful. We stopped at Nik's Grill and Bar for some drinks. The places has EUR30 per set loungers and umbrellas on offer which also includes 2 drinks. They look good quality ans extremely comfortable. Lots and LOTS of wasps (like everywhere on the island). The view and scenery is lovely as the name of the beach would suggest. The road down isn't great, in fact hire cars aren't allowed down it, so it's a bit of a walk from the main road.

Ayazma Plajı

Beach
Outdoor Activities
Ayazma Plajı, located 6km southwest of the town on Bozcaada, is a popular and well-developed beach with white sands. It offers various tourist facilities such as toilets, restaurants, and watersports. The beach has sunbeds and four restaurants nearby. Despite being crowded at times, it provides a clean and sandy environment for visitors to enjoy the sea, which is chilly but clean. Additionally, there are regulations in place to ensure safety during the pandemic period.
A very beautiful sandy beach. The umbrellas and sunbathing seats are for free as we came to the beach late. The water was not cold either. This is a wonderful beach to swim and enjoy the summer. There are also water activities on the beach.
Ahmed A — Google review
The sea is perfect and clean, the water is crystal clear, and generally cold, but it's beautiful at the end of July and the beginning of August. There's almost no space for your own umbrella; paid sunbeds are packed tightly all over the beach. It's a 2-kilometer stretch of fine sand and, in my opinion, one of the world's few beaches. Sunbeds and umbrellas are exorbitantly priced, and the showers and restrooms are poorly maintained. There are two or three restaurants along the roadside, and prices are expensive. There's a water sports club at one end of the beach, and the other is the quietest, sunbed-free.

Super clean beach with clear water. There are places to buy food and drink. It's a lovely beach to spend the day on. Nice to be here
Markus H — Google review
A gorgeous beach with fine sand, crystal clear water unfortunately managed by mobsters interested only in taking your umbrella fee and 2 sunbeds worth 300 TL, without offering you minimal comfort. But let's start with the beginning. Today we wanted to visit the island of Bozcaada, having accommodation in Eceabat. We went by ferry Eceabat - Canakkale (155 TL) then we went to the port of Geyikli where we left the car in a parking lot then we took the ferry to the island of Bozcaada (55 TL per person). The ferry ride takes about 30-40 minutes. From the port you can take a minibus to the famous Ayazma beach (30 TL per person) which come quite often. The minibus journey takes about 10-15 minutes. The beach, as mentioned above, is gorgeous, very crowded, turquoise water, fine sand. In the water, the first 15-20 meters deepen smoothly, then it is deeper. What we noticed is that the water was a bit cold for our taste, but we still went in, if we got there. I return to what I said above about the mobsters who manage the beach. The tax for mobsters can also be paid by card. The umbrellas do not provide shade, they are constantly moving and can even hit you, the sunbeds are plastic, many even cracked. So a lot of money is collected without investing anything for the benefit of the customers. Shame about the beach and the beauty of the area.
Soe S — Google review
Nice beach but I don’t think there is any shower on the beach , 70lt for two sun beds and umbrellas. Umbrella is small so bring some clips so you can hang your towels to get extra shade.

Sea is chilly but goverment works good in here, for example in this pandemic period you have distance between people also forbidden to smoke, you need to just walk a few steps to special area for smoking, nice people and ofcourse with a Turk hospitality 😊🙏

Tenedos

Island
Nature & Parks
Tenedos, also known as Bozcaada in Turkish, is a picturesque island located in the Aegean Sea. It is the third largest Turkish island and boasts sandy beaches, charming windmills, and extensive vineyards. The island's blend of Greek and Turkish influences gives it a unique cultural appeal. Visitors can explore its natural beauty, including a splendid Venetian castle and glistening white houses.
Bozcaada is the Turkey's coolest island surrounded by the coolest water on the sea and wine yards on the land. The water is so clean, you can observe the rich sea life while your feet still touch the ground. Compared to its size and the population, the island has so many tastes to offer. Local wine, fresh fish, unique cookies and organic fruit & vegetable jams. Worth spending 2-3 days to for the landmarks and must-do activities, a lifetime to rest your soul.
Akin B — Google review
It is a lovely small mediterrenean island, great food, great sea & nature. The Island is very popular against "rich people". Since there is a limited season, the island is expensive. The food is local & great. There are several beaches, most popular one is: Ayazma, and Akvaryum. Bozcaada beaches are damn cold :) and I like it. There are regular ferries from the main land; also taxi and minibus services within the island. If you want a slower holiday, with great food, great people and beaches...visit the island.

Lighthouse of Alexandroupoli

Sights & Landmarks
The Lighthouse of Alexandroupoli, a tall and striking white beacon with a fountain at its base, is a city landmark constructed by the French in 1880. It stands on the picturesque promenade and is considered to be a favorite place for leisurely walks. The lighthouse resembles a solid stone tower in the form of a cylinder and is set against the backdrop of the bright blue sea.
A beautiful place with a bike path and a very good view. The lighthouse continues to operate today. It is one of the tallest lighthouses in Greece, since its height reaches 18 meters, it has 98 internal steps that lead to the lamp chamber while the upper part of it is laminated with10 rows of glass panes. Its lighting visibility is possible at a distance of 24 nautical miles from the coast (about 44km)

There is a very wide sidewalk along the sea, which is a few kilometers long. It is full of tables from restaurants and coffee shops, it has much space for cycling or walking. The view is amazing, especially at sunset. Visit TripAdvisor to find the best restaurants, which have both greek and eastern cuisine.

Ancient City of Troy

Mentioned on
5 lists
Historical place
Sights & Landmarks
The Ancient City of Troy is a significant historical site, known for its scattered stone ruins and a replica Trojan horse. It offers visitors an immersive experience, complete with informative displays that provide insight into the city's history and period. The surroundings are tranquil, with cheerful birdsong and playful squirrels adding to the ambiance. The ancient stones that make up the ruins are an impressive sight and should not be missed by anyone in the area.
Modern museum well worth visiting to understand context of history, archeology, and many artefacts (others in Istanbul museum). Site itself has well signed walkways and information boards, though hard to grasp the differing levels and which parts were extant together - so second visit to museum would be good if with own transport. Site has cafe, but take water and hat for open walks. Good view of coast which has receded significantly since city founded.
Jeff S — Google review
This UNESCO world heritage archaeological site is open to public and is setting for Greek mythology of the Trojan war. Excavation started in 1871 and you can see lot of ruins. If lucky you can see archaeological work in progress at sections of the site. Boardwalk access everywhere so makes walking easier but you need hat, sunscreen and comfy walk shoes. Have to pay fee to enter. At entrance there is replica of Trojan Horse. Local village goat seen wandering about ruins
S V — Google review
Little remains of the actual buildings, but the historical and cultural significance of the location as well as the events that took place around it make up for the lack of structural integrity. Perhaps the most impressive is the entrance ramp which has been preserved in astonishingly solid shape. Also, for this who read and adore the Illiad, one can literally sense the spirit of the ancient battles amidst the ruins. With a hit of imagination, you can picture Agamemnon's army spread out across the surrounding plain as they plan and wage the attack on Troy.
Muris D — Google review
It was an honour to visit such an agent and historic place of a people and culture from so long ago. I really wished there were more bi-lingual translations of the text surrounding the site. Also better sign posting as I’m more of a visual person it was hard to see which versions of the city were specific to the corners of the site that we walked. The Trojan horse it self looked very commercial and ‘overly designed’ considering it was placed in the enter square of the old city.
Trishoya G — Google review
Was quite cool. But… if you been to Roma. It’s a bit cliche. But this is 3000 BC. Still worth to go if you are not tired of 11+ hours same stay drive in the car. So simple high meat Shell gasoline test area foods. Not for foodies!
Derek S — Google review
Where myth whispers through the wind — Troy, the city of nine lives. Each layer beneath my feet tells a story: the earliest settlers of 3000 BCE, the rise and fall of kingdoms, the fire and rebuilding of Troy VI and VII, and finally, the Roman Troy IX in 1st century A.D., when the city was reborn in marble and empire’s glory. Here, time folds into legend — the same ground that stirred Homer’s imagination as he sang of Achilles’ rage, Hector’s courage, and the fate sealed by a wooden horse. The ruins stand silent, yet the echoes of the Iliad still ride the breeze from Çanakkale’s shores. It’s a humbling walk through millennia — from myth to memory, from poetry to stone. #Troy #Çanakkale #Homer #Iliad #AncientTroy #RomanTroy #HistoryAndMyth #TurkeyTravel

Another historical place in western Turkey. Walk through the ruins of this well known ancient city. You can barely imagine how it should have looked in the past times. In the far you can see the Dardanelles and can imagine the tale of Homers Iliad. Of course you will find the troyan horse. There is another horse in Canakkale, which is the original requisite from the movie 'Troy'.

Excellent - The ancient city is the site of the mythological battle of Homer (ala The Iliad). The site and its accompanying archeological museum were very interesting.

Gallipoli Peninsula Historical National Park is a significant site that holds the history of the Gallipoli campaign during World War I. This location is renowned for its unconventional warfare and symbolizes valiant efforts and mutual respect between nations. Visiting this park offers an opportunity to delve into the historical impact of the war and pay homage to the bravery and patriotism displayed by those involved.
Incredibly moving and emotional place for Aussies to visit. I shed a few tears as the sad loss of life of all the young men that died here. Such a respectful place and tribute to our anzacs, the Turks and French and British and even Indians who gave their life in these battles. A must see for Aussies

Just FYI! These pictures are from the War Museum, which is 4 MINS driving from this specific location, don’t get confused! Not the best indicated, a bit confusing and less information than expected. If you drive to this specific location/building, you will not be able to enter. To go to the War Museum drive further in that road and then turn to the right when you see it indicated.

Beautiful and moving site which gives insight into the history surrounding the founding of the Turkish Republic. One of the most impactful locations on the Gallipoli peninsula.

The size of this park in terms of territory and how the people of Turkey have kept history alive is truly impressive. Moreover, the cleanliness and maintenance of all monuments deserves admiration. Can really meet global criteria. It’s definitely worth the visit but give yourself at least two or three days if you want to see everything. Also beware of turtles! 🐢☺️

Great time spent here. Moment of reflection for the legendaries, braveries and patriotism of a people led by the strong faith in their heart and readiness to sacrifice their lives and souls for the future of only their people but all the marginalised and underprivileged people of the world. This peninsula witnessed a war where all the odds were against the Turks but their faith and bravery won them a legend unequalled anywhere in the history of the world.
Muhammed A — Google review
It is a great location in the history of WW1 and Turkish history as well. It can be done on a single day from Istanbul. The presence of a good guide I think is essential, since it is difficult to be appraised of the entire history of events or their significance.
Alex F — Google review
I lived in Australia and New Zealand for a few years and Gallipoli is almost a founding myth in those respective countries. It was fascinating to come here and see the place and battle(s) I heard so much about. What was really interesting was also to see it from Ottoman/Turkish perspective. What's amazing about the whole complex is how the winning side the Turks have almost dedicated it to losing side renaming the landing area to Anzac cove etc. I can't think of anywhere else where such a thing has happened. I did a tour which you almost have to do. It's a big site so walking and local buses are not a realistic prospect. It was really hot so bring water and sunscreen but most of all if you have heard of Gallipoli and have any interest in it absolutely worth a visit.

The trip of my life! I wanted to visit the gallipoli peninsula all my life. Now that I got here and I attended a tour program I get to learn all that I wanted to learn first handedly. The weather is good but could be better. So maybe later in May or even June is better timing for the Gallipoli visit. The tour costs only ₺70 per person lunch included.
