Yazili Canyon National Park

National park
Outdoor Activities
Yazili Canyon National Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, and photography amidst a forested river gorge. The park boasts historical significance as it was traversed by St. Paul and features ancient rock inscriptions and remnants of the Roman Imperial Road network. Visitors can explore the picturesque surroundings, including swimming holes along the river. While facilities are currently limited, ongoing construction indicates future amenities such as a restaurant, accommodation cabins, and restrooms.
This is a very beautiful atmospheric place with living nature with living water. And there you can swim or come with your family for a picnic. You can come alone for work or reflection, or just relax. There is practically no Internet there. But now they have built houses that you can rent for a day. A very beautiful and atmospheric place. With beautiful nature, a restaurant.
Димитрий М — Google review
Although the park is beautiful, there’s only one trail and it’s not even 2km long, for a “national park,” I was quite disappointed in the lack of hiking trails. There is a place there to buy cold beverages/snacks.
Sarah H — Google review
We really enjoyed the short hiking trail through the forest and along the river, but the place needs some more maintenance...
Joe B — Google review
Walked all the way to the end of the path, just as the gorge turns right. Everyone we met was having fun. Water was very cold lower down, but comfortably cool (on a very hot day) a bit further up...
McKinley P — Google review
It is a beautiful place like many in Turkey, but what turist do with it... How stupid you need to be not to understand one simple rule: take back what you brought. We went there in the weekday, croved came about noon. Toilets are super dirty, broken , no toilet paper. Disgusting. I just walked 20 meters and collected 2 bags of trashes, including baby napkins. River is cool and clean as it goeas fast but everywhere you can see plastic bottles and mugs tangled into trees and roots. Everywhere are rules signs but no one cares. Please make turists be more responsible! It is time to punish them for their acting!

Yazili Kanyon is a beautiful national park in the middle between isparta and Antalya . Takes about 1.5 hours of driving from Antalya . Amazing scenery , ice cold water - yes you can swim- and a stunning view from one of Turkeys most natural-kept- parks .
Jef P — Google review
Really nice area to talk a walk and enjoy a refreshing bath in crystal clear water. I came here with my family and we spent a lovely day.
Dominik L — Google review
Amazing place !! The hike around the canyon was just perfect, in tree covered ways keeping you cool. Then a dip in the clear waters to freshen up. Hats off to all the staff who work so hard at keeping the place so clean and tidy!! Plus so friendly and happy to chat

Eğirdir Castle is a stunning fortress that should be at the top of your itinerary when visiting the charming town of Eğirdir. Perched on a hill, this historical site provides breathtaking panoramic views of Eğirdir Lake and the surrounding mountains, making it an ideal spot for sunset watching. As you wander through the narrow streets of the old town, you'll encounter beautifully preserved Ottoman houses that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the area.
Old Undated Byzantines ruins. You can not really enter the castle.
Yusufhan B — Google review
If you are in the city you will probably visit. It's just the ruins. Don't expect to be able to go inside. The view from the lake is fine. Not crowded. It would be good if visitors would take their empty bottles and bags with them instead of littering the place.
Daisy A — Google review
Great place to see sunset. easy to go up, you can look around beautiful Egirdir lake from the castle
Maki M — Google review

What an amazing Magarasi ! First of all , let's agree about this point which is it deserves a visit ❤❤ Every thing about it was beautiful , begins with the roads to arrive there and its nature then the Magarasi itself. Secondly , the fee were 8tr per person which is cheaper than what I expected and it should be like this for every place in the world. Thirdly , the Magarasi was very long and extremely beautiful it is magnificent , and the light inside was good so you can enjoy taking photos. I suggest that you bring jacket or a blovar because it was kind of freezing cold inside and I went there on the 14th of August and I got very cold.. All in all, I do strongly suggest it for all people you so that can learn its history and enjoy its beauty . Love it , love it.

(Translated by Google) It is not a very touristic place, but it has such potential. It's a male-dominated environment, with mostly elderly and retired uncles. They are not disturbing because when you go as a tourist, you become disturbing for them. But still, drinking hot tea in winter and cold drinks in summer under a centuries-old plane tree is worth the experience. I was amazed by the efforts made to keep the plane tree alive.

The view and the path to walk (in fact the path is one of the path of christianity for pilgrim) is through the forest are very nice. But the road to drive here is very very bad, since the road is very narrow and encountering with the long vehicles with heavy loads (marble bulks) in that narrow roads is very dangerous.

Anton I — Google review
This park is designed like an open air museum. Some of the most well known tales of the honourable Nasreddin Hoca remind of his genius in naturalistic statures. It's a real small place, one can walk through in a few minutes. I advice to have a nice private guide by your side to tell you about him! On the other side of the street there's his tomb. Right now it's getting renovated, one can't see him, but the park is still nice and there are info tables to read of him

Filiz D — Google review
Mulla Nasruddin Hodja was invited out to dinner. He went in his old clothes and nobody was interested in him. When he found a few minutes to spare, he rushed home and collected his fur coat. When he came back, he was treated with great respect. Everybody wanted to speak to him. When they sat down for dinner he said: “Eat, fur coat, eat!” And he explained to the curious people: “If this regard is for my coat, it must eat also.”

A real cultural centre for Turkish cultural philosophy. For all interested in the life, writings and impact of Nasserudin Hoca on Turkish culture a must visit.
Mark L — Google review
Nasreddin Hodja was a Seljuq satirical Sufi, born in Hortu Village in Sivrihisar, Eskişehir Province, present-day Turkey and died in 13th century in Akşehir, near Konya, a capital of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, in today's Turkey. He is considered a populist philosopher and wise man, remembered for his funny stories and anecdotes. He appears in thousands of stories, sometimes witty, sometimes wise, but often, too, a fool or the butt of a joke. A Nasreddin story usually has a subtle humour and a pedagogic nature. The International Nasreddin Hodja fest is celebrated between 5 and 10 July in his hometown every year.

The Konya Tropical Butterfly Garden is a captivating destination featuring exotic plants, butterflies, and an insect museum. Situated adjacent to the Selcuklu Flower Garden and the Adventure Tower, this expansive urban park boasts a butterfly-shaped building with a glass roof covering 7,600 square meters.
When you enter, hundreds of butterflies silently greet you by clapping their hands. The humid and warm atmosphere, adorned with tropical plants, embraces you with all its presence. As you travel in this unique world, butterflies fly around you like moths, if one lands on your outstretched finger, our happiness will pass through the glass and reach the sky. I hope you will see it if you go to Konya in the spring.
Ali P — Google review
The Konya Tropical Butterfly Garden is straight-up like walking into a living watercolor painting. The second you step inside, you’re hit with warm, earthy air, layers of green everywhere, and butterflies just casually floating past like they own the place. It’s humid (like South Asian Summer humid), so definitely dress light and bring water, your skin will glow like never before in what feels like a tropical escape right in the middle of Konya. The glass dome itself? Stunning. It lets in soft natural light that bounces off vibrant wings and tropical leaves, perfect for photos but also just super calming to look at. They’ve recreated a whole ecosystem inside, with 40+ butterfly species from across the world flying freely around you. If you stand still long enough, one might even land on you! I literally held my breath hoping it would but that didn’t happen, one did land on my friend though! What I loved most is how clean and thoughtfully designed everything is. You don’t just walk through and take pictures , there are signs explaining butterfly lifecycles, and you can actually see some emerging from cocoons. It’s peaceful, quiet, and kind of magical. Whether you’re going with friends, solo, or on a soft-date vibe, it’s 100% worth the visit. Staff are friendly, tickets are affordable, and the whole experience is unforgettable.

The tropical butterfly garden is great place to visit with your children. You need at least 45 to 60 minutes to make sure your child can read and learn about butterflies and other bugs. They ask you if you want a photo at the entrance but finally they sell it to you, they should have told us that it wasn't free.

Alaaddin Hill Park in Konya is a serene and historic site, offering a perfect spot for picnics with its walking paths, benches, gardens, and trees. The park was built by the Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat and now serves as a peaceful green space in the heart of the city. Visitors can explore the Alaaddin Mosque and remnants of an old palace while enjoying the lush surroundings.
This is a very calm and green park a little to the north from downtown Konya. The place is not very crowded in the early hours of the afternoon and you can stroll along the green paths, as well as to get to know the examples of Seljuk architecture, like a mosque and what remain of a palace in the park.

The Shams of Tabriz Mosque and Tomb is a significant site in Konya, Turkey, housing the tomb of the revered 12th-century poet and spiritual mentor of Rumi, Shams Tabrizi. Although Iranians believe that Shams' actual tomb is in Khoy, Iran, this mosque holds cultural value as a symbolic site. The unassuming small building exudes a wonderful atmosphere for meditation and reflection.
A deeply spiritually significant mosque. Holding a tomb dedicated to Shams, Rumi's teacher.

Sarah — Google review
A very peaceful place. Most people don't follow the rules, they don't cover their heads when entering such places. This behavior is quite disrespectful towards Shams. I wish they knew..

Mashallah what a majestic place of great historical importance. Loved visiting this area. And you would feel even more good if you have read The Forty Rules of Love. May Allah bless this person and if you get the chance, do visit this.
Arsalan A — Google review
Small mosque where the tomb of Shams of Tabriz is supposed to be located. However, there are similar burial places claimed by other cities ( up to 5), including one Unesco World Heritage place in Iran. According to contemporary Sufi tradition, Shams mysteriously disappeared: some say he was killed by close disciples of Rumi who were jealous of the close relationship with Rumi but according to others, he left Konya.
JR S — Google review
Wonderful atmosphere, very nice to sit in a corner and meditate. We left because the evening prayer started, but came back the next day to meditate again. Unassuming small building, particularly compared with the sumptuous burial site of Shams’ disciple Rumi. Shams is a bit like the forgotten Master

Azizia Mosque, located in Konya, Turkey, is a stunning example of Ottoman and baroque architecture. Construction began in 1676 AD, making it one of the city's historical landmarks. The mosque features intricate motifs and colorful Ottoman inscriptions, along with a beautiful tall minaret. Adjacent to a bustling market selling Turkish and Ottoman arts, it offers visitors an immersive cultural experience.
Aziziye Mosque, located near the Mevlana Rumi Tomb in Konya, is an architectural gem that left me in awe during my visit. While it might not receive as much attention as the tomb of Rumi, it is a masterpiece in its own right and absolutely worth exploring. Built in the late 17th century and later restored in the 19th century, the mosque stands out with its unique blend of Ottoman and Baroque architectural styles. The towering minarets with intricate detailing and the large central dome are mesmerizing, but what truly caught my attention were the stunning stained-glass windows that allow sunlight to pour into the prayer hall, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere. The interior is equally captivating, with ornate calligraphy, exquisite marble work, and beautifully painted ceilings. Every detail reflects the craftsmanship and artistry of the period. The mosque’s spacious courtyard also offers a peaceful spot to sit and reflect, making it a perfect complement to the spiritual experience of visiting the nearby Mevlana Museum. What makes Aziziye Mosque special is its ability to transport you back in time while providing a calm and welcoming space for visitors. I highly recommend taking a moment to visit this hidden treasure when you’re in Konya—it’s an unforgettable experience.

Here’s a polished version of your message: "Experience the serene beauty of the mosque and the soul-stirring recitation of the Quran. Kindly note that there are only **5 minutes** between the Adhan (call to prayer) and the start of the Salah (prayer). To ensure you’re ready on time, I recommend performing your ablution (wudu) before arriving. This will help you settle in calmly and join the congregation without rushing. May your prayers be blessed!"

The mosque gets its name from Sultan Abdulaziz, who commissioned the reconstruction of the original mosque, which was destroyed in a fire in 1867. The original mosque dated back to the late 17th century. The mosque is big and reflects the architectural motifs of the late 19th century.

Aziziye Camii is one of the most unique mosques I came across in Konya. Its baroque-style architecture really stands out, and the interior is absolutely beautiful — rich colors, high ceilings, and a calm, spiritual vibe. It’s not as crowded as some other spots, which makes it even more enjoyable to sit and admire the details. Located close to the Mevlana area, it’s easy to stop by while exploring the city. A great blend of history and beauty.

Thos mosque is totally different architecture with other mosques. I have visited many mosques during 5 weeks Turkey trip. Here is so beautiful and intriguing. Some kind of mixture of western and eastern. You have to visit here if you visit Konya. Don’t miss the bazaar near here and this mosque. Truly hidden gem!

The architecture of this mosque is very nice and the details are so good to appreciate. This is a free place to visit for tourists, of course you have to respect the place and the people praying. It’s within the market so definitely stop and check it.

One of the most underrated mosques in Turkey. First built in 16-17th century and then rebuilded by Sultan Abdülaziz in the second half of 19th century. Both interior and exterior engravings present rare examples of Baroque-style design, which makes it unique among mosques.

The Pertevniyal mosque in Istanbul was built in this way, from the Ottoman baroque architectural works, in the same way. it represents a more baroque view than the usual mosque image. Close to Mevlana museo

Historical landmark
The Mevlana Museum, also known as the Mausoleum of Rumi, is a significant tourist attraction in Konya. It houses the tomb of the revered Sufi mystic Rumi and features a museum displaying various artifacts from his life and era. Visitors can explore ancient manuscripts, hand-written copies of the Quran, musical instruments from Rumi's time, and art pieces dating back to the Seljuk era.
Unfortunately, the museum was closed when I visited, but even from the outside it was absolutely worth it. The turquoise dome, the Seljuk-Ottoman design, and the calm atmosphere around the place are breathtaking. You can really feel the spiritual energy here, and just sitting outside was peaceful. A must-visit in Konya and 5 stars without a doubt!

One of the high point of my trip to Turkey. Honoring the Sufi religion and Rumi at the Mevlana Museum and Mosque. Cleansing in the water of life after visiting Rumi's burial site. The Mevlana Jalaluddin-i Rumi Mosque is magnificent. Sufism is a mystic body of religious practice found within Islam which is characterized by a focus on Islamic purification, spirituality, ritualism. Although Sufis were opposed to dry legalism, they strictly observed Islamic law and belonged to various schools of Islamic jurisprudence and theology. A day never to be forgotten .

One of Turkey’s most iconic and spiritual sites. This is the resting place of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, the famous Sufi poet and mystic. The museum preserves manuscripts, ceremonial garments and artifacts from the Whirling Dervishes, while the turquoise conical dome makes the building instantly recognizable. A deeply meaningful and historic place absolutely worth a visit.

Here lies one of the biggest inspirational poets of all time whose thoughts have enlightened the many souls. The museum is inside the complex, which houses Rumi's tomb. You get to learn about the life of disciples during the life of Rumi and the way things worked in 13th century.

This place is a huge deal for those who have enjoyed Rumi’s poems and deep thoughts at least once. It is free and no need to buy tickets. It is divided into doors (babs) and separate parts to roam around like the main museum, tombs, and poems and photos. No recording with flash but normal one is ok. Those who know persian can also read the scripts and poems that are everywhere. The garden part is also enjoyable for sitting or drinking coffee.
Nesa M — Google review
Beautiful museum where Rumi taught his views and received his mentor Shams. The museum holds Rumi's tomb and the history of Mevlevi Order. Do not get intimidated by the massive amount of people there. If you read Rumi and follow him, whatever your religion is, find a place to sit near his tomb, close your eyes and meditate.

Ancient Ruins
Çatalhöyük is a significant archaeological site that features the remains of a large neolithic settlement. It dates back to 7,500 BC and is considered one of the oldest human civilizations in the world. The town boasts wall paintings inside houses, giving us a glimpse into ancient life. Located near Konya, visitors can take a short day trip to explore the excavated sites, museum and recreated houses.
Free entry to this ancient wonder is an absolute steal! Çatalhöyük offers a fascinating window into the lives of our earliest ancestors. As the oldest known civilization, it's really interesting to imagine their society. Walking through the ruins, you can't help but feel a deep connection to humanity's history. Definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in archaeology or human origins. They also have model houses, where you can walk through to experience how the society used to live. Worth the visit!

This Neolithic and Chalcolithic 7500-5600 BC site has been on my list for a few years and further interest stimulated after visiting the Anatolian Civilization Museum in Ankara this March. The site overlooks the Konya Plains and is a pleasant 40 min rural drive south from Konya. It has a very interesting interactive museum, State of the Art, bookstore and cafe. Would suggest allowing extra time for the museum, it is amazing and exhibits are in English and Turkish. It is educational, great fun and wonderful introduction before walking up the short ramp to the archaeological site perched on top of a small hill.

Great place to visit for history buffs. Sadly the southern wing is closed due to ongoing archeological work. The replica buildings are fascinating. Downside: Most of the excavated items have been shipped to the museum in Konya.

Çatalhöyük is the best archeological site/museum I have seen in years. Modern architecture nicely blends to surroundings and on a sunny day this makes a perfect visit. It combines first section that is mostly educational and the second one that reflects these teachings and makes great understanding on how successful is the digging of this faboulous settlement. I was especiially impressed with the media explanations (i.e. animations, posters, interactive movies depicting settlers real life....) with artefacts, posters and diagrams that place Çatalhöyük in the context with the other world's archelogical great sites. Also world class are the replicas of the exteriors and interiors of the settlement's houses. Things to know Bring your own water and some snacks. One can easily spend 3 to 4 hours here and if the café is closed like today one is on his/her own. In short if you are in Konya this place is a must see.
Dragan A — Google review
Excellent museum and Neolithic site, which makes understanding accessible and entertaining. Staff very helpful and friendly. Cafe staff the same. We were surprised that, besides Egypt, there was no mention of Africa at all in the archaeological timeline ! Getting to the site is a bit tricky without your own car, and if you don't want to do the tour bus. We caught the Cumra bus from the local autobus terminal close to Mevlana Meydan, then a taxi from Cumra to Catalhoyuk. We caught a ride back with the tour bus at about 15.45, which dropped us off on Mevlana Meydan.
Mark M — Google review
Solo traveller tip here: if you are in konya check the shuttle bus to the site, it's very convenient and ATM the only option to go there if you haven't a car. The museum is very nice and the site is breathtaking. You can't miss it if in konya.

Sultan Han – An Unforgettable Stop on the Silk Road Visiting Sultan Han was one of the highlights of our trip. The caravanserai itself is breathtaking — beautifully preserved, spacious, and full of atmosphere. When we arrived, it was wonderfully quiet, which gave us the chance to explore at our own pace and really take in the details of this historic site. Inside, there was a carpet exhibition that added an unexpected layer to the visit. Seeing the handmade carpets displayed in such an impressive setting was fascinating, and even more memorable was watching three women weaving right there. They kindly invited me to try the process myself, which made the experience even more personal and authentic. It’s also the kind of place where you can simply sit, have a coffee, and soak up the ambiance — a rare chance to pause and imagine what life might have been like when caravans passed through centuries ago. And on a practical note, I was genuinely impressed by how clean and well-maintained the facilities were — even the toilets were spotless and thoughtfully designed, which is always a welcome surprise while traveling. Overall, Sultan Han is absolutely worth a visit. Whether for its history, its atmosphere, or the chance to connect with living traditions like carpet weaving, it’s a place that stays with you long after you leave.

An overnight rest area for caravans during Ottoman period. A very secure building for their safety as they would be carrying pre cious cargo. Today, there is a nice exhibit inside of handmade wool rugs made in 18th and 19th century, the colors still looking sharp. It's one of the first places I go when I come to this city. Since then, it has become a must, even if I don't visit it every week due to my data overload. Generally speaking, it is a small shopping mall. But I love it here. A place that can meet the needs of the city. Those who think there are not many options can go to shopping malls in big cities. This is how this business system works. There is enough space on the top floor, starting with fast food and a movie theater. There are LCW Waikiki, Defacto, Flo, Mavi, U.S. Polo, Flormar, Penti and many other stores in the shopping mall. It provides a very good performance service with options that meet the needs of the city.

This rugged, 3,268m-high inactive stratovolcano features hiking & views from the summit.
We, two fit mountaineers from Germany / Poland climbed this mountian mid of June. We took normal route, not very left, but second from left in Maps me … top part very loose gravel, taking energy. We needed 3,5 hrs to first top, to second top another 20 min. No climbing. Crampons (little six spike ones) can be great help when snow is frozen - then you can also use the large snow fields, which is way faster than the gravel.

We drove up, bit off road, the look at the inactive stratovolcano was stunnig, we wanted to climb up to the summit but arrived quite late and did not reallyfind a suitable path. We enjoyed watermelon, overlooking the village. We then went down to the Helvadere lake and enjoyed sweetcorn from the local market.

Hasan Mountain in Aksaray: A Mesmerizing Natural Wonder If you're a nature enthusiast seeking breathtaking landscapes, a visit to Hasan Mountain in Aksaray is an absolute must. As one of Turkey's most impressive volcanic mountains, Hasan Mountain captivates visitors with its blend of historical and natural beauty. Located approximately 20 kilometers from the city center, Hasan Mountain stands tall at an elevation of 3,253 meters. This prominent landmark of Central Anatolia boasts verdant valleys, lush meadows, and volcanic formations that will leave you in awe. One must-see natural gem nestled at the foot of the mountain is Sultan Marsh. A haven for birdwatchers, this marshland is home to a myriad of bird species. Witness the graceful dance of birds, immerse yourself in the symphony of nature, and revel in the tranquil atmosphere of Sultan Marsh. For those seeking adventure, Hasan Mountain offers an exhilarating opportunity for mountaineering. It has a designated route for experienced climbers who are equipped with the necessary gear. If you're an experienced mountaineer or have an interest in the sport, conquering the summit of Hasan Mountain promises an unforgettable experience accompanied by breathtaking vistas. While exploring the foothills of Hasan Mountain, I highly recommend a visit to Ağzıkarahan Caravanserai, a historic gem of Seljuk architecture. Built during the Seljuk era, this caravanserai served as a stopover and provided security for travelers along trade routes. Transporting you back in time, the caravanserai's enchanting ambiance and remarkable design will add a touch of historical charm to your Hasan Mountain adventure. A trip to Hasan Mountain allows you to discover the natural and historical wonders of Aksaray. Immerse yourself in unforgettable panoramas, lose yourself in the embrace of untouched nature, and let the allure of history sweep you off your feet.

Selima Cathedral

Historical place
Nature & Parks
Selime Cathedral, situated just over an hour outside Goreme, is a site with a rich history dating back over 1700 years. Initially a center for early Christian worship, it later served as a castle under the Seljuk Turks and withstood the Mongol invasion. The cathedral's breathtaking rock formations were carved out by humans centuries ago and have served various purposes throughout history, from monasteries to hotels for travelers.
This is not just a historical site, it is an extraordinary place that bears the traces of human history and faith. It was impossible not to be fascinated from the moment I stepped here, as it was completely different from the structures and geographies I had seen so far. In particular, its size and preserved structures were truly impressive. It contains a huge kitchen, large rooms, a basilica-style church and wonderful columns and reliefs carved into the rocks. These details clearly show how important a center this place was in the past. How did worship take place in such a difficult environment? And how was it preserved for so long? Many questions came to my mind while visiting this place, and with each step I understood better how valuable this place is in terms of history and religion. Additionally, its unique geographical structure offers an extraordinary view both from inside and outside. It has a magnificent and peaceful atmosphere where nature and history are intertwined. Even though it is a little far from Göreme, it is definitely a place worth seeing. I 100% recommend this unique place where history, faith and nature come together!

This cathedral site was probably the best cave site we visited. The path up the mountain into the various buildings/rooms is amazing and in great condition. The views of the historic site and the valley below it are stunning. You can easily picture why this site had historic religious significance as well as military value. You can also visualize in your head a caravan of camels loaded with treasure staying overnight here for protection (read the sign about this site that I posted for more details.) A very nice place to spend about an hour. Take your time, enjoy the views, and history. It was also less crowded than other places which is very nice too!

One of the interesting historic places in Cappadocia. The complex area was built on the path of rock mountain, you can see the study room, prayer rooms, cave rooms,… It s impressive structure what attracts you, when you climb to higher point, you can enjoy the beautiful views of the valley. I can just sit and enjoy the winds and views from there. Take about 30-40 for sightseeing and photographing. Be careful when you climb up and down, you need a good shoes for this place.

This is a unique cathedral. It used to serve as inn as well as a monastery. The view from this cathedral is also very unique. You can understand the history of this place without a guide too from the instruction boards located outside every room. You will need around 30 to 45 mins to cover this place. Be ready to climb a few stairs for the visit.

Selime Cathedral — Where Stone Whispers the Echo of Centuries At the very end of the Ihlara Valley, when the path seems to fade between dry hills and warm wind, an almost unreal sight appears: the Monastery of Selime, also known as the Selime Cathedral. Carved directly into volcanic rock, this vast structure feels more like a dream than something made by human hands. Walking through its corridors is like stepping into a world suspended between faith and survival. Centuries ago, Byzantine monks carved churches, kitchens, stables, and hidden passages into the stone. At its heart lies the “cathedral” — an enormous rock-cut church with columns sculpted from the mountain itself and faint frescoes that still cling to the walls. There’s a sacred silence in the air. Light filters softly through small openings, dancing across the worn surfaces. You can almost imagine the monks who once prayed here, the travelers who sought refuge, and the soldiers who later turned the monastery into a fortress. Every corner tells a story — even the shadows. From above, the view over the valley is breathtaking. The contrast between the blue sky, ochre cliffs, and human devotion etched into stone makes Selime Cathedral one of the most mysterious and hauntingly beautiful places in Cappadocia — a meeting point between nature and spirituality.
Paulo V — Google review
Selime Cathedral in Kayaaltı, Selime, near Güzelyurt in Aksaray, Turkey, is an impressive rock-cut monastery carved into the volcanic cliffs of Cappadocia. The surrounding landscape of fairy chimneys and valleys adds to its dramatic setting. A quiet, atmospheric stop that gives a real sense of Cappadocia’s historical depth.
Noel M — Google review
Selime cathedral is in fact a complex structure that included a caravan passage, inn, cathedral, chapel, storage rooms etc. - a complete town in the rocks. This is the best preserve rock architecture we encountered in Cappadocia with eleborate rock carvings and frescoes, columns and tunnels from Byzantine period (8 thru 11 c.) The complex sits on the top of the hill and offers magnificent views over the valley. You can easily spent an hour there climbing all the tunnels and dead-ends and returning to the “red-arrow” route. For a speedy sightseeing either few pics and selfies 30 minutes may be enough.

The tunnels here are not as tight as the ones in Vietnam HCM, there are alot of different holes inside, look out for signs that says do no enter in red. Green means okay to enter. What a cool introduction to the Cappadocia region the Saratlı Kırkgöz underground city was. We visited in May 2025. The city has seven levels, however, only three are open and we only had time enough to do two. It was cool wandering from room-to-room guided by single light bulbs all strung along one loooong electrical cord. There were no other people visiting Saratlı while we were there, which made our meandering even cooler and more spookier. You gotta love traveling on the shoulder seasons. If you‘re in the Cappadocia area this is a nice place to explore. There are ladies near the entrance who sell the prettiest dolls and other hand-crafted souvenirs.

Such a beautiful site. My husband and I love visiting places that are not overrun with other tourist and this site was beautiful!

(Translated by Google) We visited on September 8th. A beautiful place to visit and see in Güzelyurt district of Aksaray, very close to the district center. Free parking is available at the entrance If your museum card is not valid, you can buy it for 60 TL. There is an underground city and a mosque inside, there is a spring water next to the mosque, which was converted from a church, you can go down and look there. There are many passageways in the underground city, we could only walk around some of them. They have illuminated certain parts. If you have time, be sure to stop by. There are other churches around. (Translated by Google) We stopped by because it was on our way back to Ihlara, and I'm glad we did. Within the valley are old Greek houses, a mosque converted from a church, a cistern, and a small underground city. Opposite these, there's an observation deck with ancient structures and churches, and the view is superb. A few kilometers further along the valley, by car, is another area with rock-cut structures. You can visit there too, but it didn't really interest us. You can enter with a museum pass.

The Haji Bektash Veli Complex is a cultural center and pilgrimage site for Alevi Muslims. It houses the tomb of Pir Sultan Haci Bektas Veli, a medieval saint, and features cultural exhibits and gardens. The museum structure in the courtyard is noteworthy, with an interesting dome-topped tomb. Visitors can drink holy water from the Lions fountain at the entrance.
You need to see such a mystical place where Haci Bektaş Veli is still welcoming wonderers of divine love and tolerance. İt should be regarded one of the wonders of Anatolian cultural heritage
Halil K — Google review
Walking through its halls felt like stepping into a miracle. Each exhibit told a story: of ancient civilizations, of groundbreaking inventions, of human creativity and resilience. I found myself learning so many things — not just facts history but lessons about religion progress, and the beauty of human expression.
Alket K — Google review
Mystical experience, many tombs of spiritual leaders. Two different practices of Islam come together. You’ll see people with and without hijab entering. You’ll see people praying in traditional Islamic ways or like alevites, making circles around the thomb. Free entry.

Amazing complex, free entrance. Must go if arr5 around.

Haji Bektash Veli (Hacı Bektaş-ı Veli) (1209 – 1271) was a saint, and philosopher from Khorasan who lived and taught in Anatolia. Not much is known about his origins, but he is revered among Alevis for an Islamic understanding that is esoteric, rational and humanistic. Hacıbektaş Külliyesi (the complex) was built in 13th century as a teqe (dergâh) of the Sufi saint Haji Bektash Veli. His mausoleum is also located in this complex.

Very spiritual and beautiful place. You won’t find any tourists here at all. A very small „city“, very local and nice, helpful people. Haci Bektas was one of the biggest preachers of the alevism. The overwhelming feeling you get here is incredible.

This is one of the place you can feel safe. Only religion in the world women and man equal. Everyone need to read and understand the philosophy behind it. So much common attitudes with japan's, but how is that possible?

Lovely church. The acoustics are beautiful and I hope one day they will host choral music here as it was sung in days of old. The only sad thing is that there is no active church fellowship meeting there now.
Aaron M — Google review
Beautiful church, unfortunately treated without respect by people who write on walls and light fires inside. They would never treat a mosque like that and in the west a similar treasure would have been given the deserved respect, regardless of the religion.

Nothing much to see, not well maintained... May be they will still clean and refurbish. But they are already charging 100 lire per person.

(Translated by Google) The church's official name is the Church of St. Theodoros Trion. It's known as the Grape Church because of the grape motifs on its exterior. It's operated by the municipality, and the entrance fee is 50 TL. The museum doesn't accept cards. It's located opposite the Derinkuyu Underground City. The church's exterior has survived remarkably well and has been beautifully restored, but entering it is heartbreaking. The frescoes have been badly damaged. Worst of all, it's the damage we've done to these historical artifacts. Almost the entire interior has been ravaged by inscriptions. However, if it were protected and the interior restored, it would be an impressive structure. There's no need to go just to see it, but those visiting Derinkuyu can make a short visit just to see it. (Original) Kilisenin resmi adı Aziz Theodoros Trion Kilisesi.

(Translated by Google) It's a neglected, practically crumbling church in dire need of restoration. If you're wondering how our historical treasures aren't being preserved, you can go and see it. The entrance fee, and the fee for parking, should at least be spent on cleaning up the surrounding area, let alone restoring it. Derinkuyu Underground City is an impressive underground complex built by the ancient Phrygians in the 7th and 8th century BC, located in modern-day Turkey's Cappadocia region. With a staggering 18 levels, it could accommodate up to 20,000 people and featured storage rooms, stables, cellars, water wells, and ventilation systems.
Really amazing experience! Take you’re time and enjoy all the little paths. Make sure you have head torch with you it’s a huge help in the dark spots. Pack light with just a little water and you’ll have an incredible time! 13€ entry which is well worth it! You can pay for a guide once you’re in they are generally around 10€-50€, they are very knowledgeable if you get the right ones.

First, if you are over 175 cm (~5’10”) you definitely need a ball cap (hard hat actually) to help protect your head give a warning of impact. I am 185 cm or 6’ tall and hit my head hard several times. The passages are very short/low in many places and sometimes for quite a distance 30-50 meters). Some passages are also very narrow so if you are obese beware. There are many steps up and down so you must be able to walk without assistance. There are no explanations in the tunnels and very few have a sign indicating what the room/space was used for. They say it is 7 or 8 levels deep but you have no idea if that is true as there is no indication of the level inside. We eavesdropped on a few tour guides but didn’t get much out of that. It is interesting place but as a single stop for the price and bruise/cut on my head, I wouldn’t do it again. Perhaps with a tour it would be better- but there is no excuse not to have more information and explanation of the routes. (Hint- follow red arrows for going down, blueto exit). If you are claustrophobic or need more air, I would also avoid.

Derinkuyu Underground City in Cappadocia is a fascinating glimpse into ancient ingenuity. Descending through narrow tunnels and multi-level chambers, you can explore living quarters, kitchens, stables, and even hidden chapels carved entirely from soft volcanic rock. The ventilation shafts and clever passageways reveal how communities lived safely underground for months during invasions. It can feel tight in some areas, so be prepared for low ceilings and narrow corridors. Visiting early helps avoid crowds and gives time to fully appreciate the scale and history. A must-see for anyone curious about Cappadocia’s extraordinary past.

⚠️ This journey is not suitable for claustrophobes or those with mobility issues, as some passages are narrow and steep. This place, a couple of hours from the city, has a very interesting history and is a special place. It’s important to go with a good guide, I recommend getting it once you’re in Capadoccia.
Gonzalo G — Google review
Descending into Derinkuyu feels like slipping through the seams of history itself. This ancient underground marvel—carved deep into the volcanic rock of Cappadocia—is not just a city, but a story of survival, ingenuity, and spiritual resilience. With tunnels so narrow you’ll crouch like a hobbit and chambers that once housed entire communities, it’s hard not to be awed by the engineering and purpose behind it all. From kitchens and stables to a ventilation system that still works, every corner whispers of lives lived in secrecy and strength. ⚠️ Not for the claustrophobic or those with mobility issues—some passages are tight and steep. But for the curious and the brave, it’s a journey worth every step.

Absolutely fascinating place! Hard to believe people once lived so deep underground. The tunnels, rooms, and ventilation system are incredible — it really makes you imagine what life was like centuries ago. A must-visit in Cappadocia if you love history and hidden worlds! 🕳️✨

Derinkuyu Underground City — A Journey to the Center of the Earth Descending into Derinkuyu felt like stepping through a portal into another world. At first, the entrance seemed modest, almost unremarkable — just a hole in the ground of Cappadocia. But as I made my way deeper through the narrow, cool tunnels, the sensation of going into the Earth’s core became undeniable. Each step downward brought a growing sense of curiosity and wonder. It was impossible not to imagine the hundreds — maybe thousands — of people who once lived here, hidden away from the surface for months or even years, with their animals, food, and hopes. The very thought of an entire city carved out of volcanic rock, plunging eight levels and more than 60 meters deep, was astonishing. With every softly lit chamber, my heartbeat quickened. There were storerooms, stables, kitchens, churches, and ventilation shafts, all perfectly designed for survival. This wasn’t just a shelter — it was a masterpiece of human engineering and resilience. What amazed me most were the massive circular stone doors, used to seal off tunnels in times of danger — like stepping inside a fortress built beneath the ground. In the damp, echoing silence, I felt a strange mix of awe and unease. There was something profoundly human about this place — fear, faith, and ingenuity all etched into the walls. And when I finally climbed back to the surface, the sunlight felt brighter than ever. Visiting Derinkuyu wasn’t just sightseeing — it was a journey through history, courage, and the boundless creativity of those who once turned darkness into home.
Paulo V — Google review
It’s a mysterious and enchanting place, with a truly magnetic and spiritual atmosphere. Tolkien must have been inspired by this place when creating the Mines of Moria. Also, the cemetery on the 8th floor reminded me of the Nazgûl’s tomb from The Lord of the Rings. Cold be hand and heart and bone, and cold be sleep under stone: never more to wake on stony bed, never, until the Sun fails and the Moon is dead. In the black wind the stars shall die, and still on gold here let them lie until the dark lord lifts his hand over dead sea and withered land.
