Thonnor Lake swimming spot

Swimming lake

Bodies of Water
Thonnor Lake is a captivating spot that offers a unique blend of relaxation and adventure. Nestled in Karnataka, this hidden gem provides visitors with the chance to unwind amidst nature's beauty. However, it's important to note that weekends can get quite crowded, so plan your visit accordingly. While the lake boasts stunning views—especially at sunset—it has faced challenges with littering, including plastic and glass debris scattered around.
Hidden gem in Karnataka ,it’s a sand water , tourists and visitors should avoid literring the place

Nice place but "We" didn't maintain it well. Full of plastic covers, papers, and garbage near the swimming area. You feel bad after seeing it. But it is near the temple so you can visit once. If you want, you can swim. Nobody will ask you over there. Adv: Mini beach You can swim Calm, and feel the beach vibe Dis: Dirty No washroom near by You can find alcohol bottles around you. Thanks! Follow me for more places like this. Happy Journey.
Bharath P — Google review
Nice place to chill out. Highly crowded place during weekends. Many people have spoiled the place by leaving plastic and glass bottles. Glass pieces will be found inside and outside the water, so please be careful while swimming. Don't walk in barefoot. There is a temple inside the water in the centre of the lake. Water will be present throughout the year. Best place for sunset view. Depth of this lake is not yet been know. Many people have died who tried to know the depth. This place is well known for its history. Please do avoid leaving plastic, bottles and any waste.
Prakyath P — Google review
This lake get closed before 5.. so visit atleast one hour before, so u can enjoy playing in lake. Playing in lake is fun. It is not maintained well, all the bottles and glass pieces and rubbish is everywhere. While walking barefoot u need to be careful due to broken glass pieces.

A very calm place , beautiful scenery but it's not well maintained. The locals there make a mess , bottles and packets everywhere. It's safe and better to go in a group as there may be some drunks partying there . The place is great but the people not so much.
Kunal R — Google review
Way too crowded, people are cooking half naked sweating and drinking alcohol It’s very ugly to watch the shore become full of garbage and slowly the water is also getting dirtier Yuckkk

Once of the divine and old architecture of hoysala dynasty. Beautiful temple with intrinsic carvings, memorable Darshan, must visit with family. Maintenance needed for this 12th century temple of Lord sowmya kesava temple. One of must visit for Rahu ketu worship.
Karthikeyan K — Google review
Beware of middle man inside the temple, they simply sart explaining the things to do pooja and charge the amount for that in the temple. 🏛️ Historical Background Built in the 12th century CE by the Hoysala empire, particularly under King Vishnuvardhana, with patronage from Queen Bommaladevi; later expanded during the reign of Veera Ballala II, turning Nagamangala into a renowned agrahara (scholarly center) . The temple is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) . 🧱 Architecture & Layout The temple rests on a raised jagati (platform) and features a stellate (star-shaped) central shrine – a signature Hoysala architectural element . Built with soapstone and granite, typical of the era, the temple is a fusion of Hoysala and rare Nagara-style elements . It’s a trikuta (three‑shrine) layout: the central shrine houses Lord Keshava; the northern one has Lakshmi-Narasimha; the southern one has Venugopala with Rukmini and Satyabhama . ✨ Key Highlights The main deity, Saumyakeshava, is a serene six‑foot tall Vishnu statue standing on a Garuda pedestal, holding conch, chakra, lotus, and mace; unusual in that the conch and chakra are reversed compared to typical iconography . At the heart of the navaranga (inner hall), there’s a mandala-like ceiling with a lotus-shaped hanging sculpture entwined with Adisesha, surrounded by 108 carved conches—believed to represent Rahu and Ketu. Devotees stand beneath this for Rāhu-Kētu Parihara (remedial worship) . 🕉️ Religious Significance & Practices Famous as a Parihara Sthalam for Nāga Sarpa Dosha and Rāhu-Kētu Dosha, especially effective for those seeking relief from ailments, marital delays, or childlessness . Major festivals celebrated include Purattasi Brahmotsavam, Panguni Uthiram, Vaikasi Visakam, Vaikunda Ekadashi, and more . 🕰️ Visiting Information Timings: Morning – 07:00 AM to 12:00 PM; Evening – ~5:00 PM to 8:00/9:00 PM, depending on source (some mention a window from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, and 5:30 to 8:00 PM) . Entry Fee: Nominal charges around ₹20–25 for Indian visitors, ₹250–300 for foreign tourists; children under 15 often enter free . Address: RQ93+VFC, Nagamangala, Karnataka 571432. Temple is ~62 km from Mysuru and ~120 km from Bengaluru, easily accessible by road from Srirangapatna‑Sira route . --- Summary Table Feature Details Era / Dynasty 12th century, Hoysala with later Vijayanagara additions Layout Trikuta temple on a star-shaped jagati platform Material Soapstone & granite Main Deity Saumyakeshava (Vishnu) – 6 ft, reversed conch/chakra Special Feature Adisesha-ceiling mandala with 108 conches (Rahu‑Ketu symbolism) Remedial Ceremony Rāhu‑Kētu Parihara Pooja, Nāga Dosha relief Festival Celebrations Purattasi Brahmotsavam, Vaikunda Ekadashi, etc. Opening Hours Morning and evening shifts (7 AM to ~8/9 PM) Entry Fee ₹20–300 depending on nationality Location Nagamangala, Mandya district (near Mysore) --- 🧭 Visiting Tips If interested in Rāhu‑Kētu remedies, pray and stand beneath the Adisesha sculpture—priests perform specific parihara rituals here. There is space even for car parking and can accomodate upto 10 cars .

Ancient Temple more than 1000 years old.Beautiful stone structure, magnificent stories behind. The person in temple showed the ceiling with rahu, ketu and divine place to sit below the ceiling and pray for all dosha parihara.

This temple is one of a kind architecture glamour of The Hoysala's. The temple barely had any people and has very less crowd. And energy of the god can be felt, and there is also a guide who will walk you through the history and the details of the temple explain the structures with the meaning behind. Swamiya Dharshana padedu Dhanyanade.

Beautiful dam . Nice place for picnic( if its allowed not sure, but saw few people sitting and eating the food they had bought)Keep the premises clean . Very beautiful view from the dam. Lot of greenery all around. Very well maintained garden. You can walk on the path after climbing few steps. A small snack stall outside the gate . Parking is open. Not at all crowded

Discovered a peaceful escape at Markonahalli Dam, just a couple of hours from Bangalore. Built on the Shimsha River, this historic dam offers calm waters, scenic views, and a cool breeze — perfect for a relaxing day trip. Not too crowded, making it ideal for nature lovers and photographers. Best visited after monsoon. A hidden gem worth visiting!
Sushmitha S — Google review
This dam is an engineering marvel designed by Sir M Vishweshwarayya. Probably it's the only dam in the world built on siphon technology. The main function of this technology is to empty the dam water as quickly as possible in case of heavy rain to prevent flooding of Yediyur Siddalingeshwara temple.
Dasharath K — Google review
It's a dam, for short time spending, no water activities when we were there. We can just have long walk along dam..

One of the coolest and calmest places near Yediyur. The dam was built by Rajashri Nalvadi KrishnaRaja Wodeyar at the end of the 1930s. Implementation of Automated Systems which is still in working in good condition. Rich History ❤️
Prajwal S — Google review
A hidden gem for a peaceful escape, Markonahalli Dam is a destination that truly exceeds expectations. Tucked away amidst the serene landscapes of Kunigal, it offers a perfect retreat for anyone looking to unwind and reconnect with nature. My recent visit was an absolute delight, and I left feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. The first thing that strikes you about Markonahalli Dam is its tranquil atmosphere. Unlike some of the more crowded tourist spots, this dam offers a sense of calm and serenity that is hard to find. The vast expanse of the reservoir, reflecting the clear blue sky, is a sight to behold. It's a fantastic spot for a quiet picnic with family or friends, or even a solo trip to simply soak in the peaceful surroundings. The well-maintained garden near the dam adds to the scenic beauty, providing a perfect foreground for some truly stunning photographs. What makes this dam particularly interesting is its historical significance and unique engineering. Built by the visionary Sir M. Visvesvaraya, it’s a testament to his genius, utilizing the remarkable Siphon technology. It's fascinating to learn about the dam's history and how it was constructed. If you're lucky and the water levels are low, you might even be allowed to walk on the dam itself, which provides a unique and memorable experience. The drive to the dam is also a pleasure. The route from Bangalore is scenic and well-maintained, with a pleasant stretch of rural roads that offer a glimpse into the countryside life of Karnataka. It’s an enjoyable journey in itself, making the destination even more rewarding. While it is a relatively simple spot, the charm of Markonahalli Dam lies in its simplicity. It's not a place with a lot of commercial frills, which is part of its appeal. There are a few small stalls outside for snacks and tea, which is more than enough for a short trip. The open-air parking is convenient, and the overall lack of crowds makes it a peaceful and intimate experience. In conclusion, Markonahalli Dam is a must-visit for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. It's a place where you can enjoy the quiet beauty of a man-made marvel in harmony with its natural surroundings. A day well spent and a memory to cherish!

Huge Dam but for now when we visited the water level was less but still it's a good place to visit. We went there just recently in April 2025. Care takers and people working there are super cool and warm hearted. They just charged us Rs100 to open the gate to explain the whole process of how the dam works. Please go there in the morning or evening because it's blazing hot in the noon. There are vendors selling water and other eatables just before you enter the dam to keep yourself hydrated. Support them ❤️ Overall nice experience and just back of the dam there's the Shimsa river too.

A temple where the earthen huge idol of lord Ganesha is kept. The mud of guluru lake is used to construct the idol. Preparation of the idol starts from the Ganesha festival day and the first Pooja will be performed on the Balipadyami day. The idol will be worshipped for one full month by the devotees. It is said maharshi Bhrigu started this tradition.
Somashekar C — Google review
Believed to be established by Maharshi Bhrigu. A unique feature in this world renowned temple is, every year a Moorthi of Lord Ganesha being made from clay of Guluru Pond. Artisans begin making it on Ganesh Chaturthi day and complete it by Naraka Chaturdashi day (1st day of Deepavali). Pujas are performed for a month from Deepavali to this Moorthi & thereafter immersed in Guluru Pond - Back to the source For those interested plan your visit to this Amazing temple during Deepavali when Prana Pratishte of new Moorthi is performed and poojas are performed for about a month before visarjane is done Today we just have the moola pratishte and pooja which itself was an amazing experience

Gommateshwara statue

Mentioned on

Jain temple
Sights & Landmarks
Gommateshwara statue, located at the top of a hill, is a must-visit for a day trip from Mysore. It's advisable to arrive early to avoid the heat and crowds. The climb involves around 700 steps on Vindya giri and 200 steps on Chandra giri. At the top, you'll find the famous Jain temple and the impressive 57-foot-tall monolithic Gommateshwara statue.
Shravanabelagola is one of those places that stays in your memory long after the visit. I’ve been here twice. It was a wonderful experience both times. The climb to the top is a bit of a trek with over 600 steps, but it’s totally worth the effort. The steps are manageable if you take it slowly, and there are places to rest along the way. We went early in the morning, so the weather was pleasant and the view was clear. Once you reach the top, the huge statue of Lord Bahubali is truly awe-inspiring. It has a calming and peaceful presence, and the view of the town from the hilltop is absolutely amazing. The temple surroundings are well maintained and clean. There are no footwears allowed on the steps, so it’s good to carry socks, especially during summer. There are shops and eateries at the base if you want to refresh after the trek. Overall, it’s a beautiful mix of spirituality, history, and a bit of adventure. A must-visit place for everyone and anyone exploring Karnataka. I’d happily visit again.
AVINASH S — Google review
This place has both historical and the spiritual significance. The climb is a bit steep but steps are in good shape and the railings really help for support. There is a dress code to be followed, shorts and sleeveless not allowed so carry a spare jacket, fortunately the administration gave us a shawl which was returned after coming back. The statue offers a sense of calm and photography is allowed but selfies and drones are not allowed. Must visit place for history lovers and architecture fanatics.

The Gommateshwara Bahubali statue in Shravanabelagola is one of the most iconic and spiritually significant monuments in India. Standing tall and majestic on the Vindhyagiri Hill, this massive monolithic statue is truly a wonder of art, devotion, and ancient craftsmanship. The moment you see it, you can’t help but feel a deep sense of peace and admiration for the spiritual heritage it represents. The statue of Lord Bahubali, carved out of a single stone, is an extraordinary example of ancient Indian architecture and Jain artistry. Its calm and serene expression beautifully symbolizes inner peace, renunciation, and enlightenment — the core principles of Jainism. The statue is about 58 feet tall and is believed to have been built over a thousand years ago, yet it still stands strong and graceful, untouched by time. Reaching the statue involves climbing several stone steps up the hill, which can be a bit tiring but is completely worth it. The view from the top is breathtaking, offering a panoramic sight of Shravanabelagola town and the surrounding landscape. Along the way, there are smaller shrines, carvings, and inscriptions that reflect the rich history and devotion of Jain culture. The area is clean and peaceful, maintained with great respect for its religious importance. During the Maha Mastakabhisheka festival, held once every 12 years, the statue is anointed with milk, saffron, and sandalwood — an incredible sight that attracts devotees and tourists from all over the world. The temple complex also provides facilities like drinking water, footwear stands, and resting areas for visitors. It’s best to visit early in the morning or late in the evening when the weather is cooler and the climb is easier. Overall, the Gommateshwara statue at Shravanabelagola is not just a monument — it’s a divine experience that connects you with peace, history, and spirituality. There is nothing like this place. It’s a historical spiritual temple that makes you forget everything and the statue just grabs your attention. If you are physically fit it will take you around 25 mins to climb the mountain but the view, energy and every step was so worth it. I hope I come here again and again. If you have some one who can’t climb the mountain you can ask for doli at main office. The dharshan is worth it.

A must-visit destination for anyone traveling through Karnataka, especially for those interested in history, architecture, or spiritual exploration.

Chandragiri Hill, standing at 2,551 meters tall, is a significant mountain featuring the Bhaleshore Mahadev temple of Lord Shiva and a cable car. The hill is home to Jain temples dating back to 980 AD and consists of two hills named Vindya Giri and Chandra Giri. Climbing Chandra Giri involves ascending 250 steps while Vindya Giri requires climbing 650 steps.
My favorite spot ever. After receiving darshana here, I feel at ease and relieved. A must-see Jain Temple is serene and full of nature. For me, it's a five-in-one deal: 1) Traveling by car from Bangalore to Shravanbelgola 2) A short hike up Chandrgiri Hill 3) The ultimate scenery and amazing view 4) Experience the wonder of darshana 5) Enjoy some delicious meals on the way back 😃 Please visit and enjoy darshana of Gommateshwara Bahubali Bhagwaan 🙏🏻

We rode from 5 AM, and reached Chandragiri Hill, 150kms from Bangalore, in time to witness the early morning light. An old lady who is the caretaker there, welcomed us with a big smile and a glass of hot tea... it was just what we needed, to prepare us for a small trek, up the rocky hill.😊 Named after Chandragupta Maurya, this hill holds deep historical and religious significance. At the top, centuries-old Jain Basadis like Shantinatha Basadi, Parshwanatha Basadi, and Chandragupta Basadi stand as reminders of a rich past. Inscriptions on the rocky surface mark the oldest evidence of written Marathi. Just across from it, Indragiri Hill rises, home to the towering Gommateshwara (Bahubali) statue, a major Jain pilgrimage site. The morning sun casting its glow over the landscape made the early ride worth it.

We climbed this hill at 7 in the morning and the view, air and spirituality was top notch. It will take you around 10-12 mins to climb the hill and you will be packed with stunning view all along. There are 14 temples and one cave here and it is all very old and spiritual they are well maintained.

Chandragiri Hill in Karnataka, offers a serene escape with its breathtaking views and tranquil surroundings. The ancient temple atop the hill adds a spiritual touch to the experience. The journey to the summit is an adventure itself, with lush greenery and scenic landscapes. However, facilities at the hilltop could be improved. Overall, a worthwhile visit for nature lovers and those seeking a spiritual retreat.

Chandragiri Hills is a highly spiritual place for Digambar Jains, home to **15 ancient Jain temples**. Among them, **Temple No. 13 & 14 are particularly stunning**—don’t miss them! Apart from the temples, there are **two significant sites** that many visitors overlook: 1️⃣ **Acharya Shri Kundkund Swami’s Charan Chinh** – Located on the left side while climbing the hill, marked with a signboard. 2️⃣ **Acharya Shri Bhadrabahu Swami’s Charan Chinh Cave** – A must-visit for those seeking a deeper spiritual connection. This sacred hill is purified by the penance of Digambar Jain monks. **Acharya Shri Bhadrabahu Swami attained Samadhi here**, and this is where **Emperor Chandragupta Maurya took Jain Diksha**. 📍 **Key Details:** - **Total Temples:** 15 - **Total Charan Chinh:** 2 (Acharya Kundkund Swami & Acharya Bhadrabahu Swami) - **Time to climb:** 10-15 mins - **Time for darshan:** 1 to 1.5 hours A must-visit pilgrimage for Jain devotees!

Nice place to visit near Bangalore on the nelamangala route. This is one of the 2 hills in sharavanbelagola the other being vindhyagiri which is walking distance from this one.that has the giant statue ot buddha while this hill top has few ancient temples. Parking can be a hassle as the day progresses and more people start visiting. The view from the top is good and from here you get a good view of the kalyani and vindhyagiri hill which also has couple of ancient temples. Drone photography was prohibited when I went but things could have changed now. There is a guard who monitors people going in and out.
Arun G — Google review
Visited this place 2 months ago, when i visited the vindyagiri hill. This is much easier climb compared to the other hill and has lesser steps which is less steep compared to the climb for the big statue of gomateshwara. On top of this hill there are many jain temples(basadi), it is a very interesting place and some of the basadis are amazing in architecture. There is some information given at the entrance of the basadis and some of the pillars which is interesting. The achievements of a king have been mentioned in a stone tablet, which has been translated and shown. overall this place is also good, it is worth visiting if you ever visit shravanabelagola for the main temple with the big gomateshwara statue.

Nuggehalli Shri Hoysala Lakshmi Narasimha Temple

Hindu temple
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
This temple stands as a remarkable testament to the artistic and architectural prowess of the Hoysala dynasty. Built in 1246 CE by Bommanna Dandanayaka, a commander under King Vira Someshwara, the temple's soapstone structure is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures that narrate tales from Hindu epics like the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata Purana. The detailed friezes depict a wide array of deities, celestial beings, and mythical creatures, showcasing the exceptional skill of Hoysala artisans like Mallitamma, who even signed some of his creations. The star-shaped platform (jagati), the three shrines with varying tower styles, and the overall ornate yet harmonious design are characteristic features of Hoysala temple architecture. While appearing as an ekakuta (single shrine) temple from the outside, it cleverly integrates three sanctums around a central mantapa supported by lathe-turned pillars. The temple complex also includes smaller shrines and a stepped tank (Kalyani), adding to its aesthetic and spiritual significance. The serene atmosphere and the relatively fewer crowds allow for a peaceful exploration of this architectural marvel.

Nuggehalli Lakshmi Narasimha Temple Review A hidden gem of Hoysala architecture, the Lakshmi Narasimha Temple in Nuggehalli is a must-visit for history and heritage lovers. Built in the 13th century, this temple showcases intricate carvings, beautifully sculpted pillars, and a serene atmosphere that reflects its spiritual significance. Unlike many crowded tourist spots, this temple offers peace and quiet—perfect for those seeking a spiritual retreat or an architectural exploration. The craftsmanship on the temple walls is mesmerizing, telling stories from Hindu mythology in stone. Though it's slightly off the main travel routes, it is well worth the detour. Be sure to visit during the day when sunlight enhances the beauty of the carvings.

Beautiful stone carvings all around Access road is narrow and there is not dedicated vehicle parking space. It's not that crowded. Nuggehalli Shri Hoysala Lakshmi Narasimha Temple 🌟 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “A serene Hoysala masterpiece tucked away in Nuggehalli—truly one of Karnataka’s hidden gems. The temple’s three towering sanctums dedicated to Keshava, Lakshmi Narasimha, and Venugopala emerge gracefully from a star-shaped platform, richly carved from soapstone. I was struck by the exquisite relief work: horizontal friezes of elephants, horses, mythical creatures, epic scenes, and divine figures—all beautifully preserved. Inside, the dim sanctum houses original blackstone idols, and the pierced lathe-turned pillars and ornate ceilings create a peaceful, sacred ambiance. An architectural wonder that combines spiritual depth with visual storytelling—definitely worth the diversion!” ⸻ 🏛️ Historical & Architectural Significance • Date & Patronage Built in 1246 CE by Bommanna Dandanayaka, a trusted commander under Hoysala King Vira Someshwara, during Nuggehalli’s days as the agrahara Vijaya Somanathapura . • Temple Layout A classic trikuta (three‑shrine) design, with sanctums for Lakshmi Narasimha, Keshava, and Venugopala, anchored by a central closed mantapa featuring a deeply domed ceiling supported by four lathe-turned pillars . • Sculptural Brilliance Exterior walls showcase six horizontal moldings depicting hamsas, makaras, epic narratives, foliage, horses, and elephants—about 120 panels in total—alongside finely carved depictions of Vaishnava, Shaiva, Shakti, and Vedic themes by celebrated Hoysala sculptors Baichoja and Mallitamma . • Material & Style Sculpted entirely from soapstone atop an elevated jagati platform ideal for pradakshina. Chitradurga Fort, located in the Chitradurga district of Karnataka, is one of the most remarkable forts in southern India, known for its stunning architecture and strategic design. Built between the 10th and 18th centuries by the Chalukyas and later expanded by the Nayakas, the fort is popularly called Kallina Kote or the “Fort of Stones.” It features seven concentric fortification walls, secret passages, watchtowers, and water reservoirs that demonstrate exceptional engineering skills. The fort gained historical importance during the rule of Madakari Nayaka and is famously associated with the brave Onake Obavva, who defended it single-handedly against Hyder Ali’s soldiers. With its massive boulders, winding paths, and panoramic views, Chitradurga Fort stands as a symbol of valor, resilience, and the architectural genius of ancient Karnataka. The tickets are very affordable. The place is well maintained and clean.

Chitradurga Fort in Karnataka is truly one of the greatest architectural masterpieces of ancient India. The moment you enter, the massive structure and brilliant engineering will definitely surprise you. The fort covers a huge area, so be prepared for a good amount of walking and exploring. Entry requires a ticket, and there are plenty of guides available at the entrance. If you’re interested in knowing the rich history and stories behind the fort, hiring a guide is highly recommended. Since the place gets very hot during noon, carrying a cap and enough water is a must. Also, there are many monkeys inside the fort premises, so keep your belongings safe and be cautious. Overall, Chitradurga Fort is an unforgettable historical experience and a must-visit for history enthusiasts and explorers.

Ranebennur Blackbuck Sanctuary

Nature preserve
Nature & Parks
Nature & Wildlife Areas
I visited the sanctuary on December 21, 2024. Initially, I was a bit apprehensive after reading some travelogues that mentioned extensive eucalyptus plantations and limited blackbuck sightings. However, to my surprise, most of the eucalyptus plantations have recently been cleared, and vast grasslands are now being developed in their place. Additionally, the forest department has recently introduced a new and impressive safari vehicle. The staff accompanying us during the safari were very friendly, making the one-hour experience truly enjoyable. We had excellent sightings of blackbucks and observed a variety of bird species, which added to the charm of the visit. Overall, the safari was thoroughly enjoyable, and I believe the positive developments will soon attract many more visitors to this beautiful sanctuary. The sanctuary offers safari rides during the morning (6:00 AM to 9:00 AM) and evening (4:00 PM to 6:00 PM). The forest department should establish helpline numbers to assist visitors planning to visit the sanctuary.

Dear KFD, I appreciate for the fact that now we have a safari vehicle to enter the sanctuary. It is maintained well, but still needs some care. However I also wanted to comment to the fact that the drivers are not so knowledgeable about the flora and fauna other than common species like the black buck, jackal, the spotted dove, etc.. They need to be trained to help the tourists explain about the habitat and other species of animals & birds which thrive in this Sanctuary. During my visit I also saw few school students eager for the safari. A proper guide who can helpful about the habitat will always be helpful. Lastly, I would also appreciate the steps take to chop down the Nilgiris tress for GIB. Hopefully we get the sight the most prominent bird once in the race for being the national bird of India.

Could spot some blackbucks but highly dissappointed by the upkeep. Declared as a Sanctury way back in 1974, one would expect this place to be prestine. But forest department has mindlessly planted eucalyptus trees which were never here. Agricultural fields often intrude the natural habitat of these animal. We saw many trees being felled and uprooted. We also saw tractors, normal public on bike casually roaming inside the Sanctury. The forest official who escorted us had no info regarding the animals. The Sanctury is limited to only 14 sq km even that is not well protected. Sad to see such neglect and carelessness by the forest department.

Wonderful place to unwind and spend some quality time with kids. Before coming to the sanctuary, please ensure that you visited nearby forest office to take permission. One can see a lot of blackbucks around. Beautiful place.

It was closed. Locals told that it was permanently closed. But good forest area and good roads. Ideal for a nice drive through the forest.
Ajay Y — Google review
Ranebennur Blackbuck Sanctuary (119 km²) was declared as a sanctuary mainly to protect blackbucks and great Indian bustard. It comprises two unconnected portions, an eastern and a western bit. The sanctuary has a core zone of 14.87 km² and a buffer-cum tourism zone of 104.13 km. Traditionally it was mostly a scrub land habitat with grasslands and occasional dry deciduous trees with some scrubs. But today the landscape is dominated by Eucalyptus, an alien species carelessly planted by forest department, as an afforestation effort. These afforestation effort of panting Eucalyptus by Forest Department, has made the habitat unfavorable for grassland species like great Indian bustard. As a resut, the great Indian bustard has not been sighted in the sanctuary since around 2002 and may be locally extinct. Blackbuck are plentiful with a count of more than 6000 in the 2005 census. Agricultural fields surround the sanctuary.

Visited temple post our trek. Its an ancient temple with a history of 1800 years. This temple has been established in 2nd century. Over the period of times multiple rulers have developed this temple. This temple is of Lord Shiva. Temple of Goddess Parvati is also been established inside the temple premises. The main attraction is the Nandi statue which has been made in a such a way that its one eye is looking at Lord Shiva & another eye is looking Goddess Parvati. The architectural design is amazing. Karnataka's pride. A must visit for anyone who wants to go back to roots. It's finest piece of art work and engineering. Beautiful architecture and stone carvings. First capital for Karnataka during ancient days. Many idols have undergone attack but still standing tall. Must visit with your young ones and show them the past history and their architecture skills. Great feeling to touch and see the amount of details on each stone. Great work. I'm no one to judge but it's a great piece of art work.

The temple is located around 800m from the bus stand. People taking buses need to get an auto to reach temple. Inside the region one can experience the rich cultural heritage of Kadamba dynasty. The pillars and moorties are very artistically built in those very ancient years. Great piece of abilities from sculptors. There is daily anna prasada. So people can have lunch. There is a small Balaji temple outside nicely built. If no rains one can visit Varada river bank which is 500m from temple.

Banavasi is a beautiful, quiet town steeped in history and surrounded by lush greenery. Known as the oldest town in Karnataka, it truly feels like walking through a living museum. The centrepiece is the Madhukeshwara Temple, a stunning 9th-century structure dedicated to Lord Shiva. The architecture, intricate carvings, and peaceful atmosphere are breathtaking. The town itself is peaceful, clean, and perfect for a day trip or weekend getaway. The drive to Banavasi is scenic, passing through forests and rivers. Locals are warm and welcoming, and you can find small shops selling local handicrafts and delicious regional snacks. If you're a history lover or someone who enjoys offbeat travel destinations, Banavasi is worth a visit. Don’t miss the Kadambotsava festival if you’re here during the season! Highly recommended for culture, nature, and history enthusiasts.

Ancient temple with lot of art works, but poorly maintained by government undertaking. Even the crowd that comes in is noisy and with zero sensibility, spoils the artefacts. The temple needs a good maintenance to keep up the serenity of temple and history.

Sahasralinga

Hindu temple
Sahasralinga is a Hindu temple located near Sirsi, known for its intricate carvings of Nandi bulls and hundreds of Shiva Lingas. The site serves as a pilgrimage destination for followers of the religion and features a hanging bridge that adds to its allure. Visitors should exercise caution when swimming due to the presence of whirlpools, but can also enjoy natural fish spas in the cool surrounding waters.
Unique historical site with hundreds of ancient rock-carved shiva lingas in the river bed. Best time to visit is during summers or much later after Monsoons when the river water levels recede and the Shiva Lingas are visible. The place itself is very calm and soothing. One can walk down the river bed with the lingas all around, presenting a stunning site. But sad to see people not respecing the sanctity of the place by taking baths and washing clothes in the river right next to the lingas, which is a sad sight. The Government must ensure such things don't happen. But definitely a must visit place, which reveals India's rich and mysterious history.

Sahasralinga is divine place. Visit during monsoon, be careful while taking dip in the river. Take photos on hanging bridge.
Siddu G — Google review
Visiting Sahasralinga in the month of July during the monsoon offers a completely different yet magical experience. Located near Sirsi in Uttara Kannada, this sacred site is known for thousands of Shiva Lingas carved on the rocks in the Shalmala River. During this season, the river flows full and strong, covering most of the stone carvings beneath the water. While the lingas are mostly submerged, the roaring river, lush green surroundings, and misty weather create a mesmerizing and spiritual atmosphere. The sound of gushing water mixed with the gentle rain makes the place feel alive and divine. Although you might not see many carvings clearly, the natural beauty and peacefulness of the monsoon-drenched forest make it a serene getaway. Just be cautious, as the rocks can be slippery and the water flow strong—it's more for enjoying nature and less for sightseeing the lingas during this time. Ideal for: Nature lovers, monsoon travelers, and those seeking a peaceful, offbeat spiritual retreat.

I have visited the Sahasralingeshwara Temple near Sirsi twice, and each time has been a deeply spiritual experience. Nestled on the serene banks of the Shalmala River, this sacred site is truly unique, with thousands of Shiva Lingas carved on the rocks. Built under the patronage of King Sadashivarayavarma (1678–1718), the place beautifully reflects the devotion and craftsmanship of that era. Walking along the riverbed, the sight of countless Shivalingas accompanied by carved Nandis creates an atmosphere of divine energy and timeless heritage. The calm flow of the river adds to the temple’s tranquility, making it not just a religious site but also a peaceful retreat for the soul. Each of my visits here has left me with a sense of awe and spiritual fulfillment, as the energy of the place feels constant and eternal.

Visiting Sahasralinga is not just a journey through nature, but a journey within — a place where faith meets peace, and the heart finds silence in the presence of the divine. Truly, it is one of the best and most soulful devotional places in Karnataka, a must-visit for all Shiva devotees.

Great place to relax and enjoy nature! Really peaceful spot surrounded by trees and a beautiful river view. The stairs take you right down close to the water ane shivalimgas, and the whole vibe is super calming. Perfect for a short walk, some quiet time, or just soaking in the natural beauty. Just a heads-up: try not to visit during the rainy season — the steps can get slippery and the water level rises, which makes it a bit tricky to explore safely.

A divine and peaceful place surrounded by nature! Sahasralinga is truly a hidden gem near Sirsi. The riverbed is filled with beautifully carved Shiva Lingas and Nandi statues, all set against the serene flow of the Shalmala River. It’s a spiritually uplifting experience to see the natural jalabhisheka as the river flows over the Lingas. Best time to visit is post-monsoon or during winter when the water level is low and you can see most of the carvings clearly. The surroundings are calm and green, perfect for a peaceful getaway or family trip. No entry fee, but it’s important to keep the place clean and respect the sanctity. Highly recommend visiting during Maha Shivaratri for a more vibrant atmosphere!

What an amazing place of religious significance this is. Nestled deep in western ghat jungle, this place is an oasis The temple and mattha is very ancient and is a sacred pilgrimage for the madhava culture. Some parts of the temple premises were under construction so could not completely see it. There is a dharamshala for pilgrims to stay. The closest town is Sirsi which is 20 km away. This is a must visit place. If you travel this far, don't miss the Sodhe Sri Swarnavalli mattha... This is another beautiful temple.

We set out to visit the Sonde Vadiraja Math, a peaceful and well-known spiritual center tucked away in the greenery of Uttara Kannada. Unfortunately, we reached around 10 AM, only to find out that the math was closed due to renovation. Turns out, it’s only open from 5:30 AM to 8:00 AM and again from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM during this period. A bit of a bummer, but now we know—and so do you! Definitely call ahead or plan your visit within those hours if you don’t want to miss darshan like we did. That said, the food at Sonde Math was surprisingly good—simple, tasty, and felt just right after a long morning drive. So the visit wasn’t a total miss! To turn the day around, we headed to Tapovana, and wow, this place made up for everything. It involves a 1 km hike through a jungle trail, which is absolutely beautiful. The path winds through thick greenery, birds chirping, and fresh air all around—exactly the kind of walk your soul needs. And then comes the best part—the water at Tapovana was ice cold, and stepping into it after the hike was pure bliss. All the tiredness from walking just vanished. It felt like nature’s own spa treatment. 😌 If you’re visiting Sonde, definitely add Tapovana to your list. Go for the peace, stay for the hike, and soak in the water—you won’t regret it.

This was my 1st visit to the Sode Vadiraja Matha and Bhoitharaja Sannidhi. Whole temple complex is huge and requires lots of climbing up and down and long walks. The place is divine, serene , peaceful and feels positive. Shree Matha is getting beautifully renovated and once complete the whole campus will looks much more aesthetically pleasing. Do roll the coconut at Bhootharaja sannidhi. It is powerful. They serve free tea and coffee in the specified hours. Stay is available and 3 times free meal is provided for the ones who stays.

It was one of the best experiences to spend quality time with my family, surrounded by nature and enjoying traditional food. I especially loved the mud kitchen items prepared in the old style from our UK side — I’m a big fan! The food was completely tasty, healthy, and reminded us of our roots. The entrance games were on another level, and I had so much fun playing with my little and younger brother. It created beautiful memories for all of us. I sincerely request Agadi Thota to make mud kitchen items available either online or offline, so more people can use them, as they are really good for health. Nowadays, in Dharwad city, I only come across matka water, but not such authentic items. I am truly thankful to Agadi Thota and everyone behind it for keeping us healthy and for teaching the importance of our old lifestyle. 🙏

Agadi Thota is a perfect destination to enjoy the real rural beauty and culture of North Karnataka. The farm is well maintained, calm and quiet in lush green surroundings. The activities provided are enjoyable for all age groups. From bullock cart ride, pottery making, boating, rain dance and many others. But mind you they only provide the structure you have to do everything yourself. But the best part is the food of North Karnataka served during entire day..it’s simply awesome..fresh, tasty ,homely and unlimited also.. The staff is very warm and makes sure that whoever comes there have a great time. The concept of organic farming and showing people how to do such type of farming in a very sustainable manner is really appreciated. It’s not about visiting, it can be called as an complete cultural exposure. I would say family outing, school outing or if you are just bored from the life going around. If you are anywhere near Karnataka u must visit this place!

A wonderful place to visit with family and kids — offering an authentic village experience that brings rural life alive! From bullock cart rides, tanga rides, to various traditional games and activities, it’s a great way for children to see and enjoy what they’ve only heard about! The highlight was the traditional North Karnataka meal served for lunch — simple, authentic, and absolutely delicious!

Good, very desi food, worth for money. Different folklore experience. Beautiful nature. However, Breakfast is not that great. Lunch, welcome drink, fruits, sugar cane juce, snacks were fantastic. For people who are like from Bangalore and other big cities. Find this place an awesome one interms of cost and experience

Waterfalls
Nestled in the lush greenery of the Western Ghats, Magod Waterfalls is a stunning natural wonder that truly comes alive during the monsoon season. This breathtaking waterfall, also known as Kuli Magod Waterfall—where 'Kuli' translates to 'Pond' in Kannada—is fed by a small tributary of the River Bedti. Its impressive 200-meter drop cascades down in two stages, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle enhanced by mist and fog during rainy days.
One of best scenic waterfalls. I visited during the monsoon season. There are multiple viewpoints, all accessible by stairs. On the way to the highest viewpoint you can also see a small waterfall several kilometres away in the opposite direction of the Magog waterfalls.
Rohith N — Google review
An elegant waterfall. You get to see it from three to four different viewpoints. The water falls down with quite a force and flows through a lovely green valley. The trek is doable by any age group.
ANAND L — Google review
I recently visited Magod Waterfalls, and it was an absolutely breathtaking experience. Surrounded by dense forest and greenery, this waterfall is one of the best natural attractions near Dandeli. The view is truly mesmerizing, especially in the rainy season when the water gushes down with full force, creating mist and fog all around. The atmosphere feels cool, fresh, and magical, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers. You can capture some really amazing pictures here, as the fog and greenery create a picture-perfect frame from almost every angle. One of the things I really liked about this place is the convenience of reaching it. The road is good, and there is plenty of space for car parking, so visitors don’t have to worry about their vehicles. Even if you are traveling in a large group, parking is not a problem. The viewing points are safe and offer a clear panoramic sight of the falls and surrounding valleys. Magod Waterfalls is not just about the waterfall itself, but also the serene environment that makes you want to sit and enjoy the natural beauty for hours. If you are in or around Dandeli or Yellapur, this is a must-visit destination. Highly recommended during the monsoon season for the best experience.
Nikhil M — Google review
It is a sight to behold in the monsoons with its deafening roar and sheer volumes of water. It starts somewhere deep in the forests of the Western Ghats in the Sahyadris of Uttara Kannada, Karnataka. It plunges 200 meters in two steps along with 2 scenic bends that form for a spectacle especially when it is gushing with lots of water. I am talking about the Bedti river and its famous 200 m fall that we know as Magod Falls. This magnificent waterfall can be viewed from a series of view points, which is more like a hike by a ridge in the middle of dense forest. Set with multiple view points, the visitor can admire the view of this surreal waterfall from different perspectives along the short hike. While one viewpoint treats you to the view of the full Magod bend, the others treat you to sensational views of the waterfall and the entire forest landscape. The heavy gust of wind that blows straight at you through the valley is an added thrill..... Magod Falls is a top monsoon holiday destination and its beauty is unparalleled when the copious flow of water is muddy, the mist moves in and out, the landscape is lush green and the trail that you walk on is teeming with wild activity. It also offers great photographic opportunities right after the rains. If you love waterfall holidays, monsoon holidays or if you are headed towards the Uttara Kannada region of Karnataka, you should definitely visit this gorgeous waterfall..... I totally recommend it!

The Indira Gandhi Glass House in Sadashiva Nagar, Hubballi is a stunning open-air structure made of glass and steel, often used for flower shows, concerts, and various events. The surrounding garden is meticulously maintained with lush greenery, colorful flower beds, and well-trimmed lawns. This picturesque setting makes it perfect for leisurely strolls, photography sessions, or simply enjoying some peaceful time amidst nature.
How can any place be this wonderful!! Such a wonderful garden / park / etc in Hubballi. The place is really well maintained and a very very peaceful place surrounded by many varieties of trees making it a place of Greenery. The place has a beautiful antique building, many antique statues, beautiful fountains, a lot of places inside the campus to spend quality and peaceful time with friends and family. The Glass 🏠 is very popular around Hubballi - Dharwad, as it is a place of attraction for many tourists and many more... The place is under the control of Hubballi - Dharwad Smart City Department and is maintained well. There are many things & many areas in the campus to spend time with kids, family, friends, etc. There is a Toy Train Station, where there is a tiny and beautiful Toy Train where many children can enjoy the Train Ride and the route covers the full campus of the Glass House. Here there are many small gardens in the campus and all are totally different from each other. The place is full of Joy! Here, there will be the celebration of many events like Fala Pushpa Pradarshana, Siridanya, and more.. that makes the place more attractive for visitors, and these events are worth participating in and are memorable too!! The entry fee for the Glass House is ₹20 per person & ₹10 for vehicle parking, and there is plenty of parking space available. Overall, according to me.. the Glass House is really worth visiting and the place is full of Joy and Greenery.

Nice peaceful place with vehicles noise. Entry fee 20 rupees, nice greenery place. Near to old bus stand can come by walk. We can also bring kids they will enjoy. Here there is a tog train which covers the full park which is not in the entry fee ticket we need to buy a separate 30 rupees ticket to access the train. Local people come for walking in the morning and evening.

Flower show (Fala pushpa pradarshan and siridhanya ) festival is going on for today and tomorrow. Entry fees is 20rs . They have arranged a very good exhibition of various flowers, fruits, superfoods, plants. You can explore different types of grains. Also the statues made of ragi, jowar etc. They have also carved fruits and vegetables. Aquarium is also exhibited over here . Also fishes and the aquarium set is available for sale They have also kept plants for sale at very reasonable price. I got plants and compost from here at cheap rates. You can get fertilizers at just 10rs per kg and plants starting from 50rs. Note: Don’t forget to get your own bags if you are a plant lover. They do provide you bag for 10rs additional charges. Overall good experience. You can enjoy snacks as well, girmit and mirchi bajji.

The Indhira Gandhi Glass House in Hubli is a stunning architectural gem, known for its unique design and beautiful surroundings. Shopping
Urban Oasis Mall- Hubballi is a popular shopping destination in the city, offering a wide range of retail options and entertainment facilities. The mall features a game zone for kids, various food options, and clean washrooms. Visitors can explore different shops including clothing stores, ice cream shops, and electronic outlets like laptop stores. Additionally, the mall houses well-known brands such as KFC and Domino's along with a cinema theatre.
🛍️ One of the Best Shopping Malls in Hubli! 🛍️ Urban Oasis Mall is a great place for shopping, food, movies, and spending quality time with friends or family. It has a wide range of national and international brand outlets like Reliance Trends, Max, Pantaloons, and more. The mall is clean, spacious, and well-maintained with proper security and parking facilities. The food court offers a good variety of options — from quick bites to full meals. The cinema hall inside (INOX) is also very comfortable and perfect for a movie outing. There are plenty of hangout spots and sitting areas, and the mall also hosts events and exhibitions on weekends which adds to the lively atmosphere. Highly recommended for shopping, entertainment, and leisure in Hubli! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Urban Oasis Mall is a solid, all-in-one spot on Gokul Road—easy to reach, with plenty of shopping, a multiplex, and a straightforward food court. It’s clean, reasonably well maintained, and works well for a few hours of retail therapy or a movie + meal plan. What I liked • Convenient location & parking: Just off Gokul/Airport Road with on-site parking, so getting in and out is simple even on weekends. • Brands & basics covered: You’ll find national labels (e.g., Titan World, Reliance/Pantaloons-type anchors) alongside everyday essentials. • Movies at Cinepolis: Comfortable screens and current releases make it easy to turn a shopping trip into a full evening. • Food court for quick bites: Familiar chains (KFC, Domino’s, Pizza Hut) and Indian counters—handy if you’re with family. Good to know • Peak-time crowds: Weekends/holidays can be busy; shows and popular eateries fill up fast. (Plan showtimes and arrive a little early.) • Overall upkeep is decent, though some reviewers wish for a livelier food court and sprucer common areas. Verdict: A dependable, family-friendly mall for shopping, a movie, and casual dining in Hubballi. Not a “destination” like metro city malls, but very practical and convenient for the city. Rating: 4/5.
Dr T — Google review
I recently visited Urban Oasis Mall in Hubli, and while it offers a few amenities, the overall experience was underwhelming. The mall houses some well-known brands like Pantaloons, Reliance Trends, and Woodland, but many stores appeared closed or sparsely stocked. The food court features outlets such as KFC and Domino's, yet the token-based system is cumbersome, and service can be slow . Entertainment options include a Cinepolis multiplex and a gaming zone. However, the cinema has been criticized for issues like sound quality and screen maintenance . The gaming area is modest and may not appeal to all age groups. Cleanliness and maintenance are areas of concern. Visitors have reported poorly maintained washrooms and a persistent odor in the parking area . Security staff have also been noted for unhelpful behavior in some instances. In summary, Urban Oasis Mall serves as a basic spot to pass time in Hubli but falls short of expectations for a comprehensive shopping or leisure experience.
Nikhil P — Google review
It's okay. Only decent place in hubli to watch movies.. pvr is there.. They have bowling also. Food court in-house is very bad. Stalls inside is not good. maintenance can be better!
Dr K — Google review
Is a decent weekend destination —A visit on a Saturday, and it wasn’t overly crowded, which made browsing easy. That said, it could definitely do with better housekeeping — some areas felt a bit neglected — and adding more anchor tenants would elevate the overall shopping experience.
Satyaveer V — Google review
The Mall is very good and well maintained, but mindset of people who live in the city is not as developed as metro city people. Due to which the footfalls in the mall is very low which have led a lot shops to close. In my recent visit a lot of shops of the food court were closed. Barely any apparel shops were open.

Unkal Lake Hubli: Perfect for Picnics & Peaceful Walks! Unkal Lake is a popular and well-maintained spot in Hubli, ideal for picnics, walks, and quality family time. The lake is large, complemented by a clean garden, playground, and walking pavements right at the entrance. Entry is a nominal ₹10 per person, and car parking is conveniently available in front. While the lake itself is well-maintained with regular de-weeding and attractive new fountains with lights, it's disheartening to see visitors still scattering garbage and plastic, despite efforts to keep it litter-free. A great place to relax, if visitors contribute to its cleanliness.
Saish G — Google review
A great place to spend time with family and friends! The Unkal Lake and garder is the place where you can find real peace and happiness. The place is totally covered with greenery and we can see many view points there so that we can enjoy the lake view from there and can feel the atmosphere. The lake and garden is really wonderful but I suggest to maintain the Unkal Lake more as the water seems to be polluted, and also request each and everyone (including me) to maintain the place and follow the rules so that the lake and garden look better and it's our own responsibility to maintain our area and surroundings clean including public parks, gardens and more. My overall experience was pretty good and I really enjoyed a lot. Most recommended garden to visit for the one who are new to Hubballi, and i recommend those too who haven't visited this place. There are even many more kids playable area so that kids can enjoy and have fun. Best walking trails are available for morning and evening walks and you'll really enjoy it. Huge Parking facility is also available vehicle parking. The ticket is Rs.10 per person and Rs.5 for vehicle (the day I visited). * Online Payment Option is not available. ** No entry ticket and vehicle parking ticket were provided by the ticket counter agent, who was unresponsive.* Overall my experience for this visit was worth watching and I really enjoyed here! Great place for walkers and jogger’s . We could only make 1/4th round of the entire lake . According to the security of the lake the entire periphery of the lake is about 6.5 kms . The lake closes at 07:00 pm . If you are planning to cover the entire round then have ample time before you take the full circle. The lake is just next to Hotel naveen . The pavement have been well laid . There are lights out along the track so that the move may be smooth . There is a sun set view point at the enterance at a heightened location . There is an eatery/restaurant at the entrance where you can grab snack before you set out for walking . Entrance fee is 10/- and parking fee is also 10/- . If you are in Hubballi and not sure where to go in the evening then this is a good place to explore .

I am a resident of Jaipur and have been visiting lake for long walks ever since childhood. I have seen people from all walks of life come to lake for morning and evening walks. I like to walk the talk here with friends and family. The environment of the lake is very conducive for deep introspection. Watching the sunrise or sunset gives me an exhilarating experience and makes me feel one with God and Nature. Of late you can see the water shimmering like silver if you go around 5:30 or 6:00 pm and makes the whole area look so calm and serene and beautiful. At the other end of the lake there is now a Buddha Park with a very beautiful calm and serene statue of Lord Buddha in sitting pose. At the entrance you will find the lake club, restaurant, lots of vendors selling eatables, and a big play zone for kids where you can enjoy with kids. Also, there are ducks in the lake which you can feed or go for a boat ride. There are plenty of things to do here. It has become an activity centre for people. All in all an enjoyable experience.

The park is beautifully done .But it lacks attention in its maintenance.(Toilet photos attached) It is sad to see basic lack of civic sense in people using it,the park is littered with plastic bottles , alcohol bottles and food packets .The authorities need to look into creating awareness on the upkeep and maintenance of the same . Also no park timings are mentioned on either gates(pictures attached ) ,a security employee assumes you know the timings ,falsely claims there are boards put up mentioning the same ,and in a very rude manner .It's a shame for the city to have provided such a great facility but it loses its beauty to certain factors as mentioned above.
