Excellet place to eat, sat outside on Sunday 28th of April on a nice day next to the wee river. I had the chilli scampi bites and kimchi fries, excellent, my son had the fish & chips which he said was the best he's had in a long time, it's all he eats and he was impressed that the batter was crisp but stayed stuck to the fish when cut, and my wife had the fish stew, she loved it, in fact an hour later she said she wished she could eat it again. Only been open under the new owners, who apparently own the local Indian place called Taal, for 3 weeks which was a huge surprise given the quality & service, usually there's lots of teething problems, my wife is a retired chef and she was equally impressed. Dog friendly, even at the bar area. Service staff were excellent as well, I must however apologize again for breaking a plate, got my foot caught and stumbled knocking a plate over. Will definitely eat there again if back in Strathhaven, can't recommend the place enough, 6 stars. Thank you.
Gum T — Google review
My husband and I had lunch here,I had two starters and he had a main . I had the calamari which had no lemon with it and it was served with raw cabbage, not slaw which would been better. The Thai beef salad , the beef was overcooked. The croutons in halloumi salad were really hard.
Debbie B — Google review
I enjoyed the food as I chose a couple of options from the Vegan menu, service was good, location next to the stream was nice and the service was good, the only thing I was not expecting is to be charged £6.50 for two glasses of Draft soda water.. in other words fizzy tap water. I wasn’t expecting it for free because I appreciate they have overheads to cover but I have never been charged £3.25 for a glass of tap water. Other than that I would have given it a 5 star rating
Zelex L — Google review
Chose this amazing little bar/restaurant for our first meal out on our Babymoon and it didn't disappoint! The service was brilliant, with socially distant covid measures in place including screens, plenty of hand sanitiser and all staff in masks. The staff were very friendly and polite and the food was absolutely beautiful! Such a lovely selection, we were spoiled for choice! After much deliberation, my partner and I both went for the soup of the day, which was tomato, chilli and red pepper - it was superb! Then for mains, my partner went for the fish & chips with minted peas and I opted for the 3 cheese macaroni. The portion sizes were huge!! So much so, we were unable to squeeze in a dessert, much to my disappointment. I'd definitely recommend this place and would certainly go back if we were ever to visit Strathaven again!
Nicola B — Google review
Trying too hard and not quite nailing it. Tonight we ate a mix from the pre theatre and a la carte menus and some of the combinations were interesting but I would say not so successful. The scallops starter @ £8.95 was underwhelming and I thought undercooked (just) , with the cauliflower purée non existent smear across plate. Main course tandoori haddock didn’t work. A nice piece of haddock “ruined”. Dry pilau rice. Chicken with spiced spaghetti a random choice but my son enjoyed it. Korean noodles OK too. The sticky toffee mess for puddings was too heavy, really thick toffee caramel and could’ve been better. Best choice of the evening was my youngest sons kids meal. Nice fish and chips in crispy batter and good starter and pudding too. Overall disappointing and better elsewhere for the price (£145 for 5) for a Friday evening pub meal. After meal glass of port couldn’t even find a decent glass.... pity. Coffee good !! Waiting staff excellent.
Will M — Google review
I am a vegetarian and tend to find a lot of restaurants lacking in choice and quality, not the case with the Waterside. Food was amazing, Chef and staff are lovely. Highly recommend this Inn for a beautiful, tasty relaxing dinner.

Lovely big park lots of different play areas, pond toilets boats but as Sunday these weren't open. Beautiful spacious park suitable for all ages. Plenty of nice seating areas for people with mobility issues to sit and enjoy the surroundings. Will definately be back on warmer day. Very dog friendly

Brilliant place to visit.Very Organised place with so many fun activities.Kids paradise . Miniature railways is a must try for kids and adults. Activities are so reasonably priced from €1.5 to €5.5 Ample bio toilets were arranged during baloon festival. Lovely place for a day out
Paramita R — Google review
Good play area. Small park at the bottom of the hill. There is a good boating pond suitable for all ages. There was bumper cars and bouncy castle. Costs £2 per shot which I think is excessive but kids had fun
Eve R — Google review
Really lovely park with lots of different play areas for very young children upto teenagers. Has a great little pond with some ducks. We took our puppy and were pleased to see loads of very friendly dogs on our walk. Nice wee sculptures and areas to explore. It has a cafe but it was closed when we visited. Would definitely go back for another visit.
W G — Google review
Fantastic park, but the highlight was the Balloon festival. Awesome
Alex S — Google review
Went there for the annual balloon festival. The park itself is very well maintained. On Sundays there is a miniature steam train for rides. There is also a boating pond and go karts for the younger ones. Food venue at the bowling green.
Steven T — Google review
Strathaven Park is a delightful green space for all ages. There are two play parks, one for young children and one for older children. There is a small boating pond (with ducks) and mini golf. I think the miniature railway runs at the weekend. It's a great park for dog walkers too. The Barrie Shelter café has a varied menu at reasonable prices. I can't comment on the food as we only had an ice lolly. There are two car parks at either side of the park.
Nancy N — Google review
Great park for the kids plenty to do from boating pond to miniature railway and beautiful park for walking. Staff around the park are so nice, men who operate miniature train full of knowledge and the man who was operating paddle boats was great with the kids has great personality ⭐️

I had a truly lovely experience visiting Dumfries House. The estate is beautifully maintained, and the house itself is rich in history The gardens and grounds were a highlight as well — peaceful, scenic, and perfect for a relaxing walk. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or simply enjoying a beautiful day out, Dumfries House is definitely worth a visit.
Margaryta E — Google review
Went for a day out with a friend. We were lucky with the weather it was sunny and hot and we spent a few hours just walking around the estate exploring. Plenty of space to explore and some lovely trails. The walled gardens was beautiful and very well maintained. Large outdoor playpark for the kids too. On site cafe was great, very good value for money and the food was lovely and freshly made. We had baked potatoes, strawberry tarts, a coffee and a cold drink each and spent £33. Seating indoors and outdoors. There are bookable tours of the house itself available although I think you have to book in advance. A beautiful place that you could easily spend a whole day exploring.

Beautiful garden and grounds. The cafe is really nice, good food (tomato and roasted peppers soup was simply amazing!) Coffee is exceptional. Highly recommend.

Will definitely go again when l'm in the area.

Lovely Family Day Out at Dumfries Estate We had a fantastic day at Dumfries Estate with the family! Beautiful gardens, scenic walks, and a great adventure playground for the kids. The house tour was really interesting, and the café had tasty food. A perfect mix of nature, history, and relaxation — highly recommended
Lizzie P — Google review
Fabulous place. If you love history. If you love Georgian design. If you love amazing food. If you love incredible walks. Just fabulous!
Derek Z — Google review
Visited the café, shop, Arboretum and walled garden. The weather was good which made a great difference. The grounds are beautifully laid out with a rich variety of trees, shrubs and plants. Produce used in the restaurant, café and cookery school on site too.
Niall O — Google review
Visiting Dumfries House Gardens was an absolute delight. The entire space feels serene and perfectly laid out, with a beautiful flow that invites you to wander and explore at your own pace. The walled garden's gorgeous beds had a plethora of annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees, from roses and clematis to gladioli and apples. It was nearly overwhelming. The fruit and vegetable gardens are not only productive but a feast for the eyes, bursting with colour and life. Every corner reveals something new – from vibrant, carefully tended flower beds to stretches of stunning woodland that feel both peaceful and full of character. One of my favourite spots was the picturesque pond areas, where the water reflected the surrounding greenery and created a sense of calm. Everywhere you turn, there’s another hidden gem to admire, making it easy to spend hours soaking in the sights. Dumfries House Gardens is a place where nature, beauty, and thoughtful design come together perfectly – a must-visit for anyone who loves the outdoors.

Fantastic place to visit. The house is stunning. Although I couldn't get right through it on that particular day because of a private function. The Sunday market is excellent. Lovely food and things to buy, especially if you are a pet owner. The walk behind the house is fantastic all be it steep footpaths. Definitely worth a visit.

As far a parks go, spot on. We didn't get past the first part of the park and cycle area for kids. Plenty of life on the water near by. Brilliant place to teach the kids

This park comes with added beauty of a small pond and lots of ducks and a couple of huge swan's grabbing a lot of attention, there's a couple of swings n stuff for the kids and benches by the pond to sit down and watch the ducks perform acrobatics.. and yes also a car park available.

Great place for everyone. Lovely lake with swans and ducks, swing park for kids. Plenty parking. Looks great at this time of year.
Robina M — Google review
Pleasant visit was pretty tidy, the sun was shining as well. Had my sandwiches and drink by the pond which was nice. The best thing was that the only Swan came out the pond and started cleaning its feathers and had a nap which was extremely rare to see. Overall made me relaxed and calm.
Anna R — Google review
Kay Park is local for me. A great place to walk the dog, or watch the swans and other birds on the man made lake. There is an interesting monument close to the entrance to the Burns monument centre and inside the centre is a statue of the Bard himself. The centre now has a marriage suite, registry and a local history service. Key Park is a nice place to visit and a great resource for the local community.

Beautiful scenery & open green spaces. Amazing for walkers.

Kay park is in the same area as the Robert burns monument in kilmarnock. It's a really lovely park to go for a walk in and they have a small playground for children. There is also a pond where you can feed the ducks and swans.

Nature & Parks
Nestled in the heart of Kilmarnock, Dean Castle Country Park spans over 200 acres and offers something for everyone. Visitors can explore scenic trails winding through woodland, open farmland, and wetland areas. The park also features a 14th-century castle museum surrounded by beautifully restored landscapes designed in the early 1900s. With a superb program of events, art galleries, and exhibitions, this friendly tourist attraction is perfect for families.
Amazing place for a morning out. Cafe with coffee, sandwiches and ice cream. Dogs are allowed inside with you to order but must sit outside. There is a covered portion of outdoor seating. Large number of high chairs for children in the dining room. The castle is completely free, three sections to walk into the tour, I was very impressed. Dogs allowed in the courtyard of the castle but not inside, understandably. We just took turns holding the dog or going inside. Beautiful nature trails and a children's play park. Will definitely come back as an easy 20 min walk from the train.
Shannon M — Google review
Dean Castle Country Park is a spectacular and absolutely free day out for the whole family! Nestled right in Kilmarnock, this place is an oasis of history and nature that feels a million miles away from the town. The highlight, of course, is the magnificent 14th-century Dean Castle itself. The recent renovations have been done beautifully, and exploring its history and world-class collections of arms and armor is truly captivating. Beyond the castle, the country park is an adventure waiting to happen. We spent hours wandering the woodland paths, spotting wildlife, and just soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The park is clearly a source of pride for the community. The facilities are excellent, and there's a lovely cafe, "The Laird's Table," for a well-deserved coffee and cake. It's a place that caters to everyone, whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or a family looking for a fun day out. Dean Castle Country Park is a treasure. I can't believe it's free to visit. It's a shining example of what a local park can be, and I highly recommend it to anyone in the area or even just passing through.
S G — Google review
An Absolute Gem on Glasgow's Doorstep! I cannot recommend Dean Castle and Country Park highly enough. We visited on a whim, looking for a day out that offered something for everyone, and it completely surpassed all our expectations. First and foremost, the wildlife is the star of the show. Walking through the beautiful, mature parkland, we were thrilled to see fallow deer roam in their expansive enclosures. But the animal encounters don't stop there; The park is also home to a charming collection of farm animals, including friendly sheep, curious goats, and wonderfully content-looking pigs. It was an absolute delight for both children and adults alike. The woodland walks are fantastic. The trails are well-signposted and cater to all levels of fitness, offering peaceful, shaded paths that make you forget you're just a stone's throw from the city. The combination of open parkland and dense woodland is simply beautiful in any season. Speaking of location, the proximity to Glasgow is a massive plus. It's incredibly easy to get to, making it the perfect escape from the urban hustle without needing to spend hours in the car. You can be immersed in this tranquil countryside setting in just minutes. The facilities are top-notch. The visitors centre is a great starting point, with helpful staff and interesting information. A huge bonus for families and anyone on a day out: there are plenty of toilets located conveniently around the park, so you're never caught short! After our long walk, we popped into the cafe for a coffee and a bite. It was lovely, with a good selection of hot and cold food, delicious cakes, and a clean, welcoming atmosphere. It was the perfect way to refuel. And then there's the castle itself – the beautifully maintained Dean Castle. The courtyard is immaculate and feels like stepping back in time, while the gardens surrounding it are a delight, filled with colour and carefully tended plants. In summary, Dean Castle and Country Park is a flawless day out. It seamlessly blends history, nature, and modern convenience. We left feeling refreshed, educated, and already planning our next visit. An undeniable 5-star experience
James F — Google review
From my experience, the Dean Castle is one of the best preserved castles in Scotland. We explored the fascinating instrument collection and the impressive armour displays, which made for an amazing experience. After our visit, we enjoyed a delicious coffee and pastry in the cafeteria. The surrounding park is beautiful, with a peaceful river, wildlife and stunning scenery. It was a truly memorable visit.
Luis S — Google review
This place is absolutely beautiful. We went on a day when it was so sunny. Lots of autumn colours. Our dog really enjoyed the walks, some steep hills so if you have trouble I’d say take hiking sticks.
Lucie T — Google review
Lovely place to visit for the whole family. Very much enjoyed a walk along the pond and river, seen deers and a nice castle, also enjoyed playground and all for free. Definitely worth coming back once in the area again.

The deer are near the car park entrance, right before the castle! 🦌🦌 We went on the Farm Trail thinking we'd see the deer on the way, but turns out they're right at the start 😭 But!!!! The Farm Trail was so good too with horses, goats, ducks etc !!!

Visitors can enjoy the bustling vibe while exploring an array of specialty shops and dining options. The street is full of all kinds of shops. There are some good souvernir shops along here. It does get very busy at the weekends, particularly during the late afternoon. There are places to eat along the street. The street is accessible to people who use a wheelchair.

If you're looking for a great shopping spot, this street is perfect, with plenty of excellent stores and charming cafes. However, be cautious when taking photos, especially if you see the Romani people sitting on the streets. They may view it as an invasion of their privacy, so it's best to avoid photographing them to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Great walk from the top of Buchanan Street down through St Enoch Square to the river. From gift shops to High end retailers this Glasgow Street has it all. If coming to Glasgow it's a must. As we found that you need more than one day in Glasgow to get around and see everything but this has to be no1 on the list. We are definitely going to return but for a few days so we can venture further out to take in more of the City.

Great day had by the family at the science centre! Lots of interactive activities to get brains of all ages ticking. Lots of areas in different STEM topics, all of which we enjoyed! On top of the entry tickets, we also booked tickets for the kids planetarium show which came at a small additional charge, but would recommend as it was brilliant.

Brilliant day out at Glasgow Science Centre! We had such a great time, with our 6 year old daughter, there’s loads to see and do for all ages. The interactive exhibits kept everyone entertained for hours, and it’s clear how much effort goes into keeping everything engaging and educational. The staff were friendly and really helpful, and IMAX 3D cinema was a highlight. It’s one of those places where you can easily spend the whole day without getting bored. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Glasgow, whether you’ve got kids or you’re just a big kid yourself!

Pleasantly surprised at how much there is to do and see at the science centre! Went with a group of parents and kids of all ages and they all enjoyed. Definately needed more time there as there are a number of levels to visit. Would saintly visit again.

We noticed the science centre across from where we where staying whilst on a trip for my daughters birthday. We decided to stop by for a visit and we where glad we did. The staff on the ticket desk where very polite and helpful. Inside there was lots to do and see. It was filled with interesting and interactive exhibits. We only stayed for a few hours as we had to catch a flight home but you could easily make it a whole day. My daughter had lots of fun learning new things as we went around. There was also an inclosed play area for children which was lovely my 4 year old didn’t want to leave. There was also a cafe unfortunately we didn’t have the time to try it. My 5 year old has said she wants to go to Scotland for her birthday treat so if we return we would definitely be visiting again as I know my 5 year old would love this just as much if not more.

Absolutely brilliant museum! Can't miss this one when on Glasgow! Definitely worth spending some time here and then some! Setting aside the great architecture of the building itself the collections are absolutely fantastic catering to varying tastes from Natural History to Painting to Design. And to top it all, it's free! The shop doesn't disappoint either if that's high on your priorities 😉

What an amazing museum!! It was the last stop on my list of things to experience on our trip to Scotland!! And it didn’t disappoint!!! The main thing I wanted to see/hear was the 1 o’clock pipe organ performance…. We took the train from Edinburgh to Glasgow. We had time to explore the museum then at 1 o’clock…. We got some of the best seats and were so excited to enjoy such beautiful music!! What a talented organist!!! Loved how he expressed himself!! He played 7 or so songs!! It was AMAZING!!! And actually the GRAND FINALE to our 30th wedding anniversary trip to Scotland from the USA!! Go visit the Kelvingrove Museum!!

A lovely museum set in an old building and free to enter (donations most welcome to the museum). Pay and display car parking with designated disabled bays £5 per 2hrs at time of posting this review. Wheelchair accessible push button automatic doors to get inside. Lifts to all floors and disabled WC too. Plenty of room inside for wheelchairs to maneuver. The're cafes and gifts shops too. There is Art galleries on one side then there are museum exhibits from dinosaurs to Egyptian mummies and a whole lot more.
H D — Google review
So, we started from Edinburgh for a day trip to Glasgow, and without any specific plans, we randomly chose the Kelvingrove Museum. The building was gorgeous from the outside, and once we stepped inside, it felt like we’d been transported back to the 1950s. The exhibits were plentiful and impressive, and what stood out the most for me and my wife was the Dalí painting on display, as well as the 1 o' clock concert featuring the church organ. That was truly magical, and I’d never heard a church organ live before—it’s an experience I’ll never forget! The entrance is free for everyone, and that something i love about Scotland and their free entrance museums policy.

Well worth the visit. We had about 3 hours. We saw some highlights and those were great. The building itself is spectacular. It is free so no tickets needed. In Glasgow Scotland

Interesting museum and lots of artsy things to see! My favourite would be the artworks across the different centuries and the crowd management was well managed. ♿️ wheelchair accessible entrance and lots of space to move around inside, across different floors. There are elevators inside the museum building.
Angie — Google review
Lovely museum with a brilliant range of exhibits - not just Art. 2 gift shops, one for adults and one for children, will a lovely range of items. Is free to enter but you need to pay for parking. We paid £7.90 for three hours which was well worth it. There’s a food van in the car park for hot drinks and a bite to eat. We used the EV charger - lead got stuck in the machine and had to call the help line who wouldn’t release us until the car next to us had disconnected. Not the museums issue at all but worth noting if you’re planning on charging there.

A wonderful place to visit in Glasgow! Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is truly amazing — a perfect mix of art, history, and culture under one beautiful roof. The architecture itself is stunning, and the exhibits are very well arranged. I especially loved the variety — from ancient artifacts to modern art and natural history displays. It’s peaceful, educational, and completely free to enter. A must-visit spot for anyone in Glasgow!

University of Glasgow

University
Sights & Landmarks
The University of Glasgow, established in 1451, is a multi-disciplinary institution and played a significant role during the Scottish Enlightenment. The campus, located in the West End since the 1870s, boasts stunning architecture designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. Its gothic buildings and castle-like turrets are rumored to have inspired J.K. Rowling's Hogwarts. Visitors can stroll through peaceful sunny courtyards and admire the awe-inspiring old buildings that give off a dream castle vibe.
If you’re into architecture, the University of Glasgow is a must-see. The main building is a stunning example of Gothic Revival style, and it genuinely feels like stepping into another era. From the pointed arches and intricate stone carvings to the massive spires that reach into the sky, it’s a place that grabs your attention from every angle. Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 19th century, the building looks more like a cathedral or a fantasy castle than a university. The level of detail is insane — every window, column, and corridor has a story. The cloisters (those arched walkways under the building) are especially beautiful, and they make the whole place feel peaceful and dramatic at the same time. What’s really cool is how the building blends history with everyday life. Students walk through these centuries-old halls daily, and yet it still feels fresh and full of life. It’s one of those rare places where the architecture isn’t just for show — it’s still being used and appreciated the way it was meant to be. Even if you’re not an architecture nerd, it’s impossible not to be impressed. Take a walk through, look up, and just enjoy being surrounded by some of the most beautiful stonework in the city.

This isn’t likely to be on many people’s bucket lists, but if you’re an architecture enthusiast, you’ll definitely want to visit the University of Glasgow. You might think it’s just another school, but it’s not. It has a rich history and numerous architectural features that have stood the test of time. Stepping onto the campus feels like stepping into the past, creating a surreal atmosphere. The university’s preservation is remarkable, and every location is incredibly picturesque. It’s not just a place to learn; it’s a wonderful destination to unwind and be amazed by the architecture. The campus also houses a museum that might interest you. Overall, this is a place you’ll definitely want to visit in Glasgow. It’s a historic architectural masterpiece that transports you back in time.

The University of Glasgow is absolutely stunning and feels like stepping into another world. As a Harry Potter fan it is hard to believe no scenes were filmed here because the architecture is magical. For any tourist this is the most essential place to visit in Glasgow and it truly leaves a lasting impression.

An absolutely stunning campus to visit! The University of Glasgow feels like stepping into history – the architecture is breathtaking, with its Gothic towers and beautiful cloisters that look like something out of Harry Potter. The Hunterian Museum and the university grounds are free to explore, and the views over the city are amazing. Even if you’re not a student, it’s a must-see attraction when visiting Glasgow. If you're visiting with kids, like I did, it's definitely an inspiration for them.

Great place to go and have a nice bite to eat or a picnic. We went for glasglow. It was really good but it was overshadowed by the amount of people. Housed in a striking building designed by renowned architect Zaha Hadid, the museum's collection spans from vintage automobiles and trains to prams and even a Stormtrooper.
Anyone that gives this museum less than 5 stars needs to have a word with themselves. This museum is such an asset to Glasgow and worth a visit for all ages. Firstly it’s free which after visiting we couldn’t believe. There is so much to see and do and we spent hours exploring all the exhibits. Inside is split over two floors with all areas wheelchair accessible. You can get up and close with vehicles of all shapes and sizes from old police cars, ambulances and fire engines to steam rollers, motorbikes and cars of every shape and size. It has a great selection of steam trains on display and we loved the old fashioned street display where it felt you were walking back in time and you could explore all the old shops and even subway train. There is a lovely wee cafe and gift shop too.

The building is modern and striking, and once inside, you’re greeted with an impressive collection that feels both inviting and easy to navigate. One of the highlights is the range of lovely old vehicles on display, from vintage cars and trams to classic bikes, which are fascinating to see up close. It’s a place that combines history, culture, and atmosphere beautifully, making it well worth a visit.

Free museum, free great knowledge to learn! 7 minutes walking from the Govan station. Took about an hour to skim through this museum. With the ship, needs about 2 hours in total! Good for kids and adults! I would love to visit here again!

Amazing place, one of the best museums we have ever been to, got there at opening time, stayed until around 3.00pm, great coffee, great soup...... The displays are very well laid out with lots of interesting info. The ship conveyer belt was so cool. Great to sit in an old underground train and watch the movie from the 1940s, also the Coronation tram, the old shops and street were so well done..... Love seeing the Caledonian Railway 123 loco, still have my Triang/Hornby one from the 1970s :) Not all about transport, plenty about Glasgow life. The Tall Ship is worth a visit too just behind the museum.

Sights & Landmarks
Nestled near the charming village of Doune in central Scotland, Doune Castle is a stunning medieval fortress that dates back to the 13th century. This remarkable stronghold has witnessed significant historical events, including damage during the Scottish Wars of Independence before being restored in the 14th century by Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany. Today, visitors can explore its impressive architecture and rich history while enjoying audio tours narrated by Terry Jones.
So fun fact, Outlander and Monty Python was filmed in certain areas, and some of the rooms were recreated from this castle. The audio guide was great and gave you fascinating information about the history, back stories on outlander, as were as Monty Python and the holy Grail. They also sell shirts for Monty Python in the gift shop along with outlander gifts. The only negative parts is not enough parking, but in the center of town 5-11 minutes away, there is free parking, if you are walking.

Doune Castle is a fascinating and well-preserved medieval fortress that’s full of character and charm. Steeped in history, it’s also famously featured in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Outlander, and Game of Thrones – making it a must-visit for both history lovers and pop culture fans. The audio guide is fantastic, with fun narration that blends historical insight and a bit of humor (especially if you're a Monty Python fan!). Exploring the grand halls, towers, and courtyard feels like stepping back in time. Set in a beautiful, peaceful location, Doune Castle is easy to explore and not overly crowded. A brilliant stop that combines history, scenery, and a touch of cinematic magic.
Mark C — Google review
We enjoyed walking around. We did not have tickets so we were directed to park in town. It was a lovely walk and likely best to park there in the first place and then follow the signs to the footpath. We thought it would take awhile, but it was really a rather short journey. It was not our favorite castle we visited but fun to see since we have watched Monty Python, Outlander, Outlaw King, and Game of Thrones. I actually wish we had gotten there before it opened and had been able to enjoy the grounds without the crowds. I would say if you are driving by - stop, but I wouldn't make a trip out to see just this castle.
Kym S — Google review
Beautiful castle with a lot of history and stunning views. You don’t need more than 30–40 minutes to explore it, and wearing comfortable shoes makes a big difference. Visiting during the low season is definitely the best — quiet, relaxed, and easy to enjoy every corner.
Gabi S — Google review
Great site. The audio tour is excellent and the staff were very knowledgeable. I enjoyed seeing parts of the castle used in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Outlander. Took about 40 minutes to go round - wall walk was closed for repairs, but highly recommend regardless.

Here’s another great castle where several movies have been filmed, including Monty Python and the holy Grail. A great courtyard and many floors and rooms to see that are furnished, including a great hall. In the room that I am standing in front of the large fireplace next to the window, there was a scene filmed there. There is one fireplace that is so large. They say you could roast a whole cow there at one time.
Don L — Google review
Nice little castle not too busy. You can be in and out in about 30 minutes maybe an hour if you take your time. A little car park which is free if going into the castle. There is a park around the castle but we didn't venture round it. Toilet facilities out of the castle and a gift shop in the castle.

Monty python, GOT, and outlander fans know, well worth the visit. Unlike most cast tours chuck are all dressed up with period furnishings, the Doune Castle allows you to envision life there without all the dressings. Truly spectacular, even with ongoing restoration work.

Argaty Red Kites is a magical place located near Doune, offering a wonderful experience for bird enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy capturing stunning shots of the red kites and explore activities like pond dipping and a mud garden for children. The site features two well-maintained hides, including the hilltop hide which can accommodate over 25 people and provides binoculars and bird reference books for use. The visitors center offers excellent facilities, while the friendly staff adds to the overall hospitality.
We brought a large group of university students (94 students) to Argaty Red Kites in March (2025). Tom, Lynn, and Ollie were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and the visit was very well organised. Students thoroughly enjoyed their time learning about Red Kite and beaver conservation efforts (and the complexity of this). We were there for about three hours, and there was so much to see and talk about. I would highly recommend visiting Argaty Red Kites if you get a chance!

Just 15 minutes out of Stirling and only 10 minutes from the motorway you find an idyllic and peaceful part of the countryside. You could easily be in the Highlands it's so tranquil. The only noise is that of the wildlife. I was lucky enough to see Chaffinch, Great Tits, Peahen, Greater Spotted Woodpeckers and Red Squirrels. And of course, Red Kites. Well worth a visit. The staff are most welcoming and knowledgeable.

A magical place to spend some time, particularly if you are into wildlife photography. I have visited many times and always enjoy myself either watching the red kites, the beavers at the right time of year or spending time in the squirrel hides as I did yesterday. I would thoroughly recommend it

An absolutely amazing experience. Arrived just before 2 pm , just by chance there was a kite guided experience happening. £10 per adult and within 60 minutes I got some of the most amazing photos I have ever taken. We really enjoyed the experience. I have photos but they are on my DSLR and can’t edit them until I get home next month. I might upload one from the back of the camera as an example for how.

I met Tom and Ollie today to buy a signed copy of Waters of Life and t shirt to support the beavers. It's been a while since my last visit. What inspirational, brave and genuinely lovely dedicated people who have an incredible ethos. This is the way forward. The kites are incredible, the beaver tours sound incredible. Please do go and support Ardgaty and their vision. They are a shining light leading the way. What an amazing place. Scotlands Nature desperately needs more to walk this path. I am truely grateful they have. Thank you.

Deanston Distillery, situated on the banks of the River Teith in Perthshire, has a rich history dating back to its origins as a cotton mill factory. Today, it stands as a community-driven craft distillery that offers guided tours, tastings, private dining experiences, and a shop for whisky enthusiasts. The distillery takes pride in its commitment to authentic craftsmanship and produces single malts known for their fresh honeyed sweetness.
Amazing whiskies at this distillery. I highly recommend treating yourself to the Warehouse No. 4 Tasting Experience. It was a very small group and our guide, George, gave an excellent and informative tour. Then we sat in the warehouse to taste delicious whiskies straight from the barrel… truly a one of a kind experience and highly recommended for any Scotch whisky lover!

We did the 3 dram tour at £25 each. The tour lasted around an hour, followed by the tasting and them the shop. Our tour guide, Thomas, was fab. Happy to answer any questions he could, able to talk about the history of the building and the different qualities of the whiskey. After the tour in the shop the staff were more than happy for us to taste even more varieties before buying.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Warehouse No. 4 Experience – Deanston Distillery What an absolutely fantastic experience! The Warehouse No. 4 tasting at Deanston was everything you could hope for — and more. Our host Brian was not only incredibly knowledgeable, but also hilarious — the perfect mix of fun and whisky wisdom. He brought the whole experience to life with great stories, insights, and plenty of laughs along the way. We sampled three cask strength drams, each one exceptional in its own way — rich, powerful, and beautifully waxy, with that unmistakable Deanston character. Tasting them straight from the cask in the cool warehouse made it feel truly authentic and special. If you’re anywhere near Deanston, don’t miss this. Whether you’re a seasoned whisky lover or just curious to learn more, this experience is amazing and highly recommended. Thanks again to Brian for making it one to remember! 🥃

I visited the UK with my famiy during last Korean Chuseok holidays. We stayed in England mostly, but we also visited Scotland, too. As an whisky lover, it's a kind of duty and faith to visit at least one of distilleries in Scotland. So I brought my family to the Deanston distillery and we met my Netherlands friend and his family. We had the distillery tour together there. It's unforgettable memory for me. Thank you, Brian for your guidance on the tour day.:) 2025.10.13, Mon, 10:15am #Deanston #distillery_tour #Deanston_12y #Deanston_Virgin_Oak_Distillery_Edition

Lovely whisky in a lovely location, what more could you ask? Friendly staff in the shop who were so welcoming and so happy to talk about the whisky, the distillery, the weather, anything. Couldn’t have wished for a nicer way to spend a wee while browsing. Offered some complimentary tastings and no pressure to buy (unlike some other visitor centres I’ve been too). Luckily Deanston is one of my favourites so not a problem! 🥃

We stopped here as an extension of a day trip to Stirling. Although near closing time, we found the visitor’s center very busy and initially it seemed like staff were having a hard time keeping up with the crowd. Once it got a little less busy, we found the staff very engaging and we got to sample quite a number of their whiskies including distillery exclusives and hand pours. They also had some Tobermory and Bunnahabhain whiskies (same parent company). While this isn’t one of the “pretty” distilleries, we were happy to see the range of distillery exclusives available and ended up with 2 bottles!

I definitely don’t like whisky (sorry, Scotland !) but James made this visit an exquisite moment of science, humor and heritage. We learned lots of things regarding distillation and had a great time ! Thank you !

Snow Factor is an exciting year-round indoor resort that offers a unique blend of winter sports and relaxation. With its impressive ice-climbing wall, skiing and snowboarding classes, as well as a cozy bar and eatery, it’s the perfect destination for both beginners and seasoned enthusiasts. Visitors have shared their experiences of taking snowboarding lessons here; many found the facilities ideal for newcomers to the sport.
Started my first snowboard lesson on reopening week back in November, was a little challenging as a beginner, but I had fun. Level 2 later that week was not good at all. Being overweight does not make it easy, and I couldn't stand up on the heel edge. With Bradley and James perseverance and making a ledge technique, I started to get there. However had to go back and redo the level 2 as we ran out of time. Onto the level 3 a few weeks later. Was definitely getting easier now, and again thanks to Bradley, we progressed onto level 4 turns as well. Few weeks later and we finished up our lessons on the big slope. Thanks to miles and patsy for the help and advice. Have now been and had a full day ski pass, and having a great time on the big slope, still require some practice and experience, but getting better every run. Overall a great experience, wish I'd done this years ago. Never too late for a mid life crisis! Thanks again to everyone at Snow Factor!!

Had a great group lesson with Mark W in December 2021. Lesson was for level 3 but he also allowed up to venture into level 4 tasks. Felt good about what was taught and have booked my next lesson already. The slope and gear is great however reception staff were lacking some costumer service skills and the toilets would benefit from more regular cleaning.

My husband and myself had enjoyed so much our 2nd snowboarding lessons with Andy! We came with no background but it was always something we wanted to try. We are really looking forward to our third lesson to be able in the future to enjoy a ride by ourselves! Also the staff is very friendly and there is really good facilities and a nice bar where you can relax after the lesson. I would recommend to go in the morning cause it's less busy 😊

Honestly couldn’t ask for a better place to learn skiing. Even in the first lesson, you feel immense confidence because they teach you really well. Our instructor Kristina was extremely helpful, and very patient, even when our turns were monstrous. Would definitely recommend and will definitely go again.

Great day at Snow Factor! Only my second time snowboarding so was still wary but the slope and facilities were perfect as a starter. Be aware though if you have no snowboarding ability at all and do go for a £55 lesson (Far too pricey) and opt for the full day £30 lift pass then you can potentially be asked to leave the slopes because of danger to yourself and others. The staff were great though and allowed a few runs until we found our feet and picked it up a little bit more. Lesson next time to advance some of my basic skills I think!

First time ice climbing with Richard as our instructor. Was a great laugh and interesting to learn the technique. It definitely felt like longer than an hour. Would highly recommend.

I've been going here for years, it's good to keep your snow skills going all year round. Myself and a friend were there last Sunday night for the last hours of the open day and we were the last two on the slope, the staff member Chris was at the top of the Poma but didn't have anyone to look out for falling so he came out and showed me how to do some tricks on the snowboard and also gave me the confidence to ride the box, I've never wanted to do it in case I went flying off the side in front of crowds but as it was empty and he gave me instruction on how to ride it I went for it. Thanks Chris, you went above and beyond.

Great lesson with Lucy last week. I did my Level 4 snowboarding group lesson and whilst all the instructors have been great, Lucy has been the best thus far. She was very approachable, attentive and a great coach. She genuinely cared and made sure I got the best out of my lesson. Hoping to hit the main slope soon so I’ll be back in touch for a private with her!

My husband and I did our first skiing lesson here and it was amazing! Tim, our instructor was patient, encouraging, and really helped us to feel more confident on the slope (something I never thought I'd say)! We'll definitely be back for another lesson!

Went to this café not a good experience. We ordered 2 brake fasts. They charged me £40 .yes £40 for two people . .1 off the staff made a poor attempt and being houmous. He was far from that .how can this be £20.25p each

Great cafe with wonderful food. Antique Centre had a lot to see and prices were extremely reasonable given the high quality of the stuff. Addendum - I visited again a year later and it was even better than the last time. Very friendly and helpful staff. Picked up a few good finds.

Excellent meal - proper good quality pub grub. Lots of choice on the menu. I had fillet steak and he had fish pie. Lots of food - too much for me but thoroughly enjoyed. The service - lots of young staff was brilliant. A great find recommended to us by the owner of our nearby accommodation.

This was the first hotel we stayed at on our west highland way journey. Rooms were well maintained and clean. We shared a bathroom with one other room which wasn't bad. Staff was great and we were even able to check in early which was so appreciated after a long day. Dinner was fantastic. One of the best we had during our 12 days in Scotland.

We had an excellent meal for two here. Though they were extremely busy, all the young waiting staff were refreshing very attentive and with such a good professional approach. Not surprisingly the service was excellent and food well presented and delicious. Many thanks for making our last evening of our break in Loch Lomond feel special.

This is the second time we’ve eaten here and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere is so lovely - cosy and quaint with nice decor too. The staff are friendly and made us feel welcome. The food was 10/10 - tons of choice, big portions and delicious. I had the seafood trio to start and it tasted so fresh. The salmon was incredible - full of flavour and presented beautifully. We had multiple cocktails too and every single one was really nice and presented well. We can’t recommend this place enough - it’s a treasure.

Booked a table for a party of five for lunch mid week. Booking was easy and done in a nice manner . On arrival we were greeted and taken to the restaurant where we decided on the table and then ordered a variety of things from the menu. Staff were both helpful and nice and patient ; they had to be ,decisions decisions were slow on our part . Food came and all looked very appetising ; it was good too and everyone was happy . I remember the food from years ago being very good and while the menu style had changed the quality is still very good . No hesitation to recommend and I look forward to returning. Thank you Clachan team .

Nestled in the picturesque Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, Go Ape Aberfoyle is an adventure-seeker's paradise. This treetop rope course offers a thrilling experience for families and adrenaline enthusiasts alike. With one of the UK's longest zip wires, reaching over 400m and soaring 150 feet above the ground, it's a must-visit for those seeking an exhilarating challenge.
This was my first ever Go Ape experience on my birthday at the rip old age of 47... the staff we encountered were friendly and put saftey at the forefront of everything. Before moving off on our own we felt fully confident on what we were doing. The course was amazing as it started with a massive zip line and then with shaken knees and the adrenaline pumping we were off on our own. Thank you to the staff there and I look forward to our next visit

We loved it. Take a back pack with some water and light snacks. Do NOT go if petrified of heights. You'll need lots of energy too. Overall we enjoyed it.

Fabulous time for all the family. Need a reasonable level of fitness to get yourself round. Nice way to get a little adrenaline rush as you head down the zip wires. Take clothes that will wash well. The mud gets engrained on the wood chip landings. The 426 meter zip line at the end is spectacular you finish and start with amazing views. Staff are very helpful and friendly.

Went with a friend to do the zipline experience. WOW! What a thrill the staff were very fun and also professional. The safety brief gave me all the confidence I needed. And the value for money is outstanding. You won't find a better thrill for the price. A 5🌟 experience for all the family. We will be back

Amazing day out we have done it for a Hen doo but friends or family day out is perfect we did the tree top challenge and axe throwing both thrilling and great fun good instructors too so much fun on the day, it was longer than w me expected too which was good 👍 weather doesn't matter as it's both fun and challenging if wet or sunny 😀
Bodzio X — Google review
Brilliant experience from start to finish. Staff and instructors welcoming and friendly, and nothing was too much trouble - as well as being a good laugh. Great course and great to have a choice of paths and routes to take; challenging enough but not too difficult. Highlight was by far the final zip line across the gorge/valley as a reward for the effort on the course with spectacular views across Stirlingshire. Made all the better by the stunning weather and setting sun but of course, sadly Go Ape don’t have control over the conditions. Slight sticking point was having to pay for parking separately since the course sits in the Forestry park; including this in the price of the ticket might help. Thanks again - amazing experience, highly recommend and would look forward to visiting again and/or visiting another site
Ruaridh — Google review
Absolutely great experience at GoApe! Fantastic instructor which gave us detailed training on how to use the safety equipment. The best is the entrance as well as the exit! Both are long zip lines crossing a valley. That’s amazing! The course is pretty fun with the two Tarzan swings and some other cool objects. Right next to the GoApe, there is also a nice place to walk. Could spend the entire day there and if you need a snack, they have a coffee shop!

Ben Lawers

Mountain peak
Nature & Parks
Ben Lawers, standing at 1,214m above Loch Tay in Scotland, is the tenth highest Munro and the highest mountain in the central Highlands. It offers stunning views of Ben Lomond, Glencoe, and the Cairngorms. The peak is part of the Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve which includes nine mountains within its range.
Great access well maintained by National Trust Scotland making this Munro require less effort and time than you'd expect. It's a walk that will boost your confidence and get you wanting more. But, yes, it's high and the wind and rapidly changeable weather will remind you that you need the right clothing (don't forget gloves) as it can be wet and almost always freezing cold. I hope you get a clear day as the views are awesome. National Trust car park! Just brilliant. We spent a couple of van nights there, took in some additional hills too and why not, there's plenty of them.
Paddy W — Google review
What a gorgeous place! Car park charge- £4 for 24hrs. No toilet facilities or rubbish bins. But the views are gorgeous. There are few walking trails that are relatively easy, some of them - moderate level as you need to continuously keep hiking up.
Jurgita — Google review
Awesome climb, well signposted and easy to follow, spectacular scenery, it was one of the best mountains for beautiful views. Plenty of parking at the beginning, £3 for all day.
Matthew T — Google review
Climb was great fun, lovely views until the top which was cold and foggy, but still good hike.
Dawn P — Google review
This place is magical. Make sure to bring some layers and a raincoat with you. Even when it’s nice by the lake (yes, it happens), it can get really cold up the mountain. Also put some waterproof spray on your shoes. I forgot to do it and regretted it soon enough. The parking is spacious so you don’t have to worry about it but I still recommend coming early in the morning. It is truly a special atmosphere there when you are alone.
Olga M — Google review
Wonderful mountain, the 10th highest Munro in Scotland, usually climbed together with ( via ) another Munro Beinn Ghlas. The altitude is high, but also the start point which makes faster progress to reach the top in a short distance. There is mostly more snow compare to the other areas because of the altitude and you can spot a wildlife often. Nice, well sized car park £3 per staying, but maybe full in summer - holidays time as the mountain is popular and accessible - not far from Central Belt.
Mountains D — Google review
Decent walk through a nature trail after a £3 parking place then you have 2 routes up. One on the left which is shallow then a big climb or the right which takes you up a smaller munro first then a few false peaks to ben Lawers. Try and go on a nice day
E T — Google review
Six hours to hike up this plus two munroes closeby. Low cloud meant the views weren't what they could have been but nevertheless breathtaking scenery and a fantastic day out.

The Falls of Dochart Inn is a charming hotel housed in an old blacksmith's house, offering picturesque views of the waterfalls. Guests can enjoy casual dining and complimentary breakfast during their stay. Situated in the village of Killin, at the eastern end of Loch Tay, visitors can witness the majestic Falls of Dochart flowing through the village into Loch Tay. The inn provides a warm and friendly atmosphere with attentive staff, making it an ideal place to relax and take in the beautiful scenery.
We try to come to Killin every year and this is a fantastic pub. The food is good, the views are stunning, the beers are great and my personal favourite part is the Smoke House. Probably the best smoked salmon you can buy in the UK! While we've never stayed in the rooms, we will always come here for a pint when visiting. 🍻
Ben W — Google review
The food we had was delicious but......there was really only 4 options on the menu, salmon linguine, burgers or pizzas plus 1 other I've forgotten. The website promises a much larger menu but the staff said this was reduced a long time ago they just haven't updated the website. After having to pay £10 online to secure a table booking, we felt tricked when we got there and found the food options we were looking forward to weren't even available. The linguine and burger was good but owners definitely need to update the website or warn people on arrival.
Christopher C — Google review
For the restaurant. Their website said they serve food till 9, but when we stopped in at 8:10 for dinner, they said they were done serving food. We went again the next night. Fish and chips were good. Their house gin and tonic is fantastic. The haggis pizza was good but something was missing, though not sure what.

I have been here a couple of times whilst staying in Killin. It is a cosy pub with good food and a great log fire. Not a huge selection on the menu but well cooked and presented. The staff were friendly and hard working. I would definitely recommend this Inn.

We recently got married at the falls as it's been one of our favourite places to come for years now. Roisin and all of the bar and waiting staff did such an exceptional job of our wedding meal and celebrations in the tea room after our ceremony. They went above and beyond to make sure our day was so special and we can't thank them enough. Our guests are all still talking about how great the food was and all of the rooms are lovely too. The bar have their own branded gins and a whiskey which were delicious and made lovely favours for our guests. We'll continue to visit once or twice a year as we like nothing better than getting a summer drink from bar and relaxing out on the rocks in front of the Inn. Such a beautiful place and so special to us 🥰
Jodie B — Google review
Visited The Falls of Dochart Inn for dinner yesterday and was very disappointed. Ordered the burger, which at £20, expected to be homemade but certainly didn't look or taste homemade nor did the fries. The customer service wasn't much better. The staff seemed as if they didn't want to be there apart from the lady behind the bar who at least had a smile on her face! Only consolation my dog seemed to enjoyed her doggy dinner.
Pauline D — Google review
Food was excellent. Salmon linguine, burgers and the breaded fish and chips were all superb. The smoke flavour on the salmon was lush. View spectacular. Only complaint was with the service, despite having had all five mains read back to us it was clear one had been missed from the order to the kitchen. Then one dessert was delivered and the other three didn't appear until a few minutes after we asked where they were five minutes later. No complaints with desserts though, fluffy sticky toffee pudding and crumble of the day was crunchy and the fruit suitably chunky but soft.
Cathryn K — Google review
Stopped for food, and had some from both the cafe and restaurant. The cakes and sausage rolls were really tasty, but the soup from the restaurant tasted like it was premade from a can and nothing special. Overall the price was quite expensive for what it was - £5 for a small sausage roll, £7.5 for a bowl of pre-made soup

Visitor center
Ben Nevis Distillery offers guided tours of a 19th-century facility with a visitor center situated in an old warehouse, where visitors can enjoy tastings. The ambiance is cool and the storytelling on whisky is commendable. However, there are no drams or sample sizes available for purchase, which could be a useful addition for those wanting to take home some whisky. Overall, it is highly recommended to add Ben Nevis Distillery to your itinerary if you are in the region.
If you are looking for whisky that’s different from the usual stuff you get in the shops, then check out this distillery. You have 2 different options on the tour depending on how many different whiskies you want to try. It was amazing to see how the whisky is made, and all the staff are so friendly. Don’t forget to book your tour at least a couple of days in advance.

A great tour led by our Guide Tom. He was exceptionally knowledgeable and passionately spoke about their unique product. A great advert for Scottish Whiskey, and. En Nevis Distillery. Well worth the visit, always go for the 4 sampler option.

We loved our tour with Tom. He was so informative about the distillery and the whisky making process and he answered all our questions! The tasting was also a nice touch at the end and we liked how we could choose the whiskys we wished to taste. we were also happy that we could take the tasters home in a drivers dram.

Loved the tour! Very informative and interesting, not solely centered on you drinking the scotch but really explaining how scotch is created. Hazel was an amazing tour guide, and we loved being able to bring the samples back with us!

What a fantastic experience. We took the tour and our tour guide Jennifer was absolutely superb. Two whiskeys to taste and we got a lovely little mixer glass to take home with us afterwards. Thoroughly recommended to all.

We did the tour and tasting. Make sure to book ahead of time as they were booked up and could not take walk-ins the day we went. Production is shut down every July so we didn’t actually see product being made but still got to tour the production facilities and it may have been better since no noise and could hear the tour guide easily.

Was there off-season so didn't see everything working. Nice tour guides and very helpful. You get some tasters at the end. Alright price for entry, not super cheap. Was there for about an hour. Sights & Landmarks
Old Inverlochy Castle is a 13th-century fortress located on the banks of River Lochy in Fort William, Scotland. Built by the powerful Comyn family in 1280, the castle has endured wild Scottish weather and remains remarkably well intact. Despite being in ruins, visitors can still imagine its former glory, complete with a moat on three sides. The castle has a fascinating history and was the backdrop for the Inverlochy battles.
It was closed but great environment, skimmed stones by the shore. The jacobite passed on the bridge close to the castle
ClifferzzVR — Google review
Unfortunately still under construction. Understandable given the age of the building and the wear and tear from visitors but was hoping the fenced would be down by the time we got there. You can get OK pictures sticking your phone through the fence, just don’t drop it 😜 Otherwise, you can only see the outside of it from a distance and through a fence.
Emi P — Google review
Beautiful place to visit but unfortunately it was closed to the public due to safety reasons but hopefully it will open again soon

A ruin. Not possible to access. Nice view on the river and train bridge
Enrico B — Google review
Access to the castle is restricted (30 April 2022), but you can view the exterior through the fence. It is in a beautiful area and is a nice walk from Fort William. There was no date posted at the site or online that I could find as to when the interior will reopen.
Nathan R — Google review
Nice castle ruins for kids to run about in. There are a few boards up giving the history. Some of the walls have scaffolding on them for restoration. There’s lots of grassy areas for picnics and a river directly behind it. There’s no restrictions to enter, just park up free on the lane outside and walk in. Worth a visit if you’re looking for things to do in Fort William.
Chris G — Google review
It was nice to visit this place in the morning and have the ruins to myself. Approx. 30-40 min brisk walk from Fort William; if you dont fancy walking along a main road there is another path (also for cycling) following Great Glen Way through Inverlochy. Opposite the castle there is Jacobite photopoint where you can see the steam train passing around 10.20am.
JoL180 — Google review
Sadly this is closed for visitors to walk inside due to weathering/erosion but you can go to the car park and walk around the castle. There’s a soap factory/shop with a cafe that I would highly recommend. The cafe overlooks Ben Nevis

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Neptune's Staircase is a noteworthy tourist spot developed during the early 19th century, which comprises of a series of staircase locks. It is accompanied by walkways, food outlets and scenic viewpoints making it an ideal stopover for visitors traveling by canal or road. The area features seven locks, including a road swing bridge and train line swing bridge that demonstrate remarkable technology for its time. There's abundant car parking available along the canal as well as at Moorings Hotel/ cafe/restaurant.
I watched the largest vessel move through the locks plus a couple of sailboats. The best “guides” here are the canal staff! They know exactly what’s going on, and they patiently explain it. It’s free, you just have to wait the next boat coming through.

Pick a clear dry day to visit and it will be nicer. Parking is close by and there is a lovely walk along the canal and some great boats moored up. The cafe by the locks is well worth a visit as well. Don't go on a wet and windy day like we did, although the dog didn't mind the weather.
Jaqui G — Google review
Fantastic bit of engineering, timing wise we got to see some boats going up. There is a cafe and a shop there and you can make a good walk around the area which is well worth it.

Excellent Walk up by the canal locks. Wonderful scenery with Ben Nevis close by. Amazing engineering of the canal locks known as Neptune's Staircase. Neptune's Staircase is a flight of eight locks on the Caledonian Canal near Fort William, Scotland, built by Thomas Telford in the early 1800s. It is the longest staircase lock flight in Scotland and takes boats approximately 90 minutes to traverse, raising them about 19.5 meters (64 feet). The site is a popular attraction for watching boats in action, trainspotting on the nearby West Highland line, and enjoying scenic views of Ben Nevis.

We timed this visit perfectly. It was really interesting to see the lock working for a large cruise boat and then a few smaller boats. It takes 90 mins for a boat to pass through the 8 locks. It was built in the early 1800s

Pretty cool lochs from over 200 years old. We happen to time it right as a couple of boats were in the last lock and preparing to go down river. Relatively easy hike up to the top lock. A treat honesty box along the way to top it off

Neptune's Staircase is an amazing experience when there is big boat ascending the locks. What an awesome feat of engineering 👏 it's free PARKING, an newly renovated park area for the kids, with plenty of shading and picnic benches. As you walk up the left hand side of the canal you will find the most amazing icecream 🍦 shop, they do doggie icecream too. We had a fantastic time and spent a few hours here watching the boat go to the other side of the road and railway lines..well worth a visit...

We changed upon this interesting spot as we drove past on our way to Glenfinnan viaduct. We spent a good hour here. We have seen locks in England (look it up if you don't know the term). But never a "staircase" of them (a series of lock steps). Also as luck would have it, 4 ships were in the process of making their way down. We enjoyed seeing them do so. We spoke to the staff operating the mechanism to get the basics understood. Overall we enjoyed ourselves. And learnt a couple of new things. If you have a curious bend of mind and approx 30-45 minutes, this will certainly be worth your time.

The Glenfinnan Monument and Visitor Centre is a must-see attraction that commemorates the Jacobite clansmen who fought for Bonnie Prince Charlie. The site offers various walking paths around the viaduct with stunning views, as well as other walking trails on the opposite side of the road. The visitor center also features a gift shop.
If your travelling by Glenfinnan visitors centre this is a must see beautifully set by the loch. And also the viaduct stunning area. Staff are all friendly and welcoming.

really great staff, plenty of parking available and an easy walk to the viewpoint of the bridge. I wouldn't recommend paying for the actual jacobite steam train, though, because it's very expensive, dated and not well maintained.
Charlie C — Google review
The Glenfinnan Visitor Centre is excellent with a nice shopping area and very clean facilities. I was surprised to learn the building is quite new and it shows in the quality. I had no trouble finding a parking spot although I arrived about an hour early which might help. There are two paths to the viewpoint, one goes straight to the viaduct and is definitely the better option while the other is less impressive. Overall a great stop that makes the experience even more enjoyable.
Burak T — Google review
Allows at least 1-2 hours in advance, in order to find a parking. Don’t park on the street, otherwise you will receive ticket. This visitor center provides toilets inside the shop which is pretty good.

Beautiful experience watching the Jacobite train crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct! But just a small note —Today, the afternoon return train that was scheduled to pass around 3:30 pm arrived earlier at 3:13 pm. So, it’s best to come at least 20 minutes early to avoid missing it.
Nawanjana P — Google review
Very friendly staff. Good, small exhibition. Great little shop and cafe. Viaduct and monument definitely worth a visit.
Susan B — Google review
Car park gets very busy if you're coming to see the jacobite train pass the viaduct. Get there early! There were like 200 people on a very rainy Thursday in September watching the trian. I alcan only imagine how many come at high season in August.
Alexander G — Google review
This attraction is free to enter, but car parking is £4. Very interesting center, with a bit of everything from geology to history to natural sciences. I especially enjoyed the tour. The center is dog-friendly, and a staff member gave my dogs treats. The only downside was it took ages to get served in the cafe.

Glenfinnan Viaduct

Sights & Landmarks
Glenfinnan Viaduct is a famous 1901 railway viaduct featuring a curving, 21-arch span and has been showcased in the Harry Potter movies. The site also includes an 18-meter tower built to commemorate the Jacobite uprising of 1745, when Prince Charles Edward Stuart raised his standard. This event marked the beginning of the Jacobite uprising that ended at the Battle of Culloden.
I went here in January. The place was so beautiful. It was a wonderful experience and a nice walk to viaduct from the parking. There are multiple parking spots available. We had to walk for 15-20 minutes to reach near the pillars. There were no trains on the day I visited. But the weather was really good and we had a great time and wonderful experience.
Alphy T — Google review
We arrived at 9:30 am for the 10:45 train, but both car parks were already full. We ended up parking at a nearby hotel, about a 5-minute walk away. Still, the old-fashioned train reminiscent of Harry Potter was well worth the effort.
Alex L — Google review
Wow what an absolutely beautiful spot this is. The viaduct is about a 10 minute walk from the car park. There is a main spot to get pictures from which gets busy but it's worth looking round for less packed spots to catch the magical train going past with all the bells and whistles going off and the steam. Across the road is a monument you can pay £5 to fo to the top off which gives you some fantastic views. The stairs are a little tight and there is basically a trap door to get up to the top but the guide at the start gives you a full brief and was full of great information.

Wonderful experience. If you are fan of harry potter you can’t Miss this place. The train pass two times per days. Form the parking, you have to walk circa fiftheen minutes in order to reach the place. The trail is not easy

Every time we are close to Fort William, Inverness, Glencoe, or anywhere West Scotland in that matter, we go for a walk around Glenfinnan Viaduct, monument, and the lake. Rain or shine, we go there. It's just breathtaking. If we get to see Hogwarts Express, bonus points.

I'm a middle-aged woman, but this place still made me SUPER excited for the Harry Potter train! Many people arrive an hour early to get the best spot for photos before the train passes and it’s sooooo worth it. Choo~ choo~ The moment the Jacobite steam train appears with that iconic sound, everyone gasps with excitement and anticipation. If you come to Scotland, make time for this. Seriously!
Hanna J — Google review
A one of its kind experience. Must visit place among Highlands of Scotland. Following the craze of the Harry Potter movie and witnessing the steam engine train pass that bridge, was a breathtaking moment. The place itself is mesmerizing. The beautifully crafted bridge between two sides of mountains, and the greenery, fresh Breeze and the lake, Beauty at its Max! Ample parking space for visiting this place. Cafe and eatery available near parking.
Parinita A — Google review
If you are a great Harry porter series fan, and you love to explore the paces where the senses were captured, than I would recommend you to explore the place. You will love it. If you want to capture the scene with Train, than you should arrive there at 2:30 pm or 11:30am. As the train times are 3pm and 12pm, it get delayed sometimes bcz of weather conditions, but runs regularly on weekdays. I hope you enjoy it.

We did the fabulous Glenaladale 2 hour cruise this week. Really recommend. We saw a white tailed sea eagle and amazing views. Interesting commentaries throughout. Binoculars provided. Good for Harry Potter enthusiasts too! Very well worth the money.

Loved our cruise on Loch Shiel. The Captain and First Mate were very attentive, working hard to show us whatever was out along the banks. We did not see much wildlife, but we saw the beautiful banks of the loch. A highlight of our two weeks in Glenfinnan.

Had a very enjoyable cruise with Loch Shiel Cruises from Glenfinnan to Acharacle. Not only was the scenery beautiful but seeing the Eagles in flight was amazing. Ali and Ben provide a great experience and are knowledgeable on the history and the eagles.

We absolutely loved our trip with Loch Shiel Cruises (I actually took two, the full loch cruise one day and the Gaskan cruise the next). Even without the wildlife the views are stunning, but multiple sightings of Golden Eagles and some significantly closer encounters with a pair of White-tailed Eagles elevated the experience even further. I'd recommend these trips to anyone!

What a great experience this was! I've been to glenfinnan a handful of times but never sailed across loch shiel. It was just no other words then stunning, the loch opens up and the scenery is superb! We seen eagles flying around following us while we sailed across the loch. It was magical to see them so close to us. Ali and the other guide was super friendly and a great commentary when we was sailing across the loch,.this loch is also very special as it was the backdrop for the black lake in the Harry potter films where hogwarts was I was in my element as a harry potter fan! You must book this cruise if your in glenfinnan!

Aly is a superb Captain along with his Mate. He is the perfect host and very knowlegable of the history of Loch Sheil and its wildlife. Makes you feel really welcome and it was an absolute pleasure to be on his cruise. We will be back again for another full return trip.👌 Highly recommended

In July I had a great cruise with Loch Shiel cruises. Managed to see an Osprey, lots of White-Tailed Eagles and a couple of Golden Eagles. Thank goodness I had my binoculars as the Golden Eagles fly at such a high altitude! Thanks for a great experience! I also went on two cruises in October and both of them were great - one was with my brother and the other was with my wife and mother in law. All 3 of them had a great experience - thanks to Captain Aly and Rosie. Looking forward to seeing you next year!
Jeremy H — Google review
A fantastic cruise with plenty of opportunity for photographing White Tailed Sea Eagles and wildlife. Praise indeed for the respect that Aly and crew have for the wildlife. The share tranquility of Loch Shiel is a magical experience. We would highly recommend this cruise. Particularly appreciated the timing of the Jacobite train passing over the Glenfinnan Viaduct. With grateful thanks to Aly for a memorable day. Sue & Steve Cross
