Wulai Falls

Nature & Parks
Waterfalls
Wulai Falls is a breathtaking 262-foot waterfall that captivates visitors with its stunning natural beauty. Accessible via a charming mini railway, the journey to the falls is as delightful as the destination itself. Once you arrive, you'll find a viewing platform that offers spectacular views of this majestic cascade. The area surrounding Wulai Falls features an old market street filled with local eateries where you can savor delicious Taiwanese cuisine—just remember to bring cash!
Wulai Falls is a beautiful spot and the best part is that it’s completely free to enjoy. The view is refreshing and the scenery is really stunning — definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Just keep in mind it’s better to go on a clear day, as the view isn’t as nice when it’s raining.
Maria F — Google review
10m+ waterfall which is majestic after rain and a nice getaway from Taipei city. Not overcrowded as compared to other nature trails. My suggestion is to come during the season so that you can experience the busy old streets and the row of shophouses in front of the waterfall. If you have not taken the rail cart, try it one way and best to walk back for the unknown but still interesting return trail as you can experience the fun of nature hike. The log cart can be noisy and must wait for the cart to be full before they pull you.
Wilson T — Google review
The waterfall will leave you breathless. The gorge is just unique in every way! Just sit and enjoy your coffee with this amazing view. The best time to go is early in the morning. Unfortunately I was on a day trip. But nevertheless. Simply beautiful !
JL D — Google review
The best place to hike for all ages. Rejuvenating due to shaded forest and rivers along the trail. Safe and provided with PA warnings in case of upcoming storms.

A great place for nature lover ! Definitely a calm and relaxing spot with beautiful waterfall and amazing scenery. We walked uphill from the old street around 30 mins. The green view made our tiring journey worth it 😆 for ease and comfort, you could take log cart especially for elders or children. Definitely a must visit 👍
Siti A — Google review
Nice waterfall to take photos. Lots of tourists. There is a shop selling steamed chest nuts, in front of waterfall, very delicious. However traveling here from city is hectic. On the way back you need to wait for bus very long, under sun.

If you are coming by car and you are prone to motion sickness please take medication before coming We couldn't do any of the activities because a member of my group got sick But the place is beautiful and the waterfall was big, it looked great The flora and fauna is different, I spotted a lizard with blue tail and white and orange butterflies..the first time ever I see them
Maryam S — Google review
1) Definitely go up on the cable car The water is nice and cool up in the mountains, you can also row a small boat among other things. This is for sure the best attraction there. 2. Waterfall with a museum, a few restaurants, and stores. It was ok. 3. Old street 10 min drive away with a big parking lot. Might as well go since its nearby. Lots of food. It was ok. Parking near the waterfall and cable car (same place): majority of parking lots are small and completely full, everybody parks on the side of the road.

New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum

The New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum is a fascinating destination for anyone interested in the history and impact of ceramics, particularly within the local context. The museum features five main exhibitions, including displays on traditional pottery techniques, the development of Taiwan ceramics, and the history of Yingge as a pottery town. Visitors can also explore prehistoric, aboriginal, and contemporary ceramics as well as industrial and high-tech developments in the field.
Nice building and interior facilities, staff were professional and friendly. Nice walk from train station. Overall pleasant experience!

Interesting ceramic process and history of how it was evolved to modern days artistic pieces. With many interactive along the way to help you learn. A good place for a weekend family outing!

I'd recommend it, and here's why: Pros: - affordable tickets (80nt is less than $3USD!) - free self lockers for your items (just fill out a quick form so they know who to contact in case you forget your stuff) - informative exhibits + a couple interactive ones - gorgeous pieces - good air conditioning Cons: - not as close to the Old Street as you think 😅 If you can, you should definitely visit and see all the beauty in person!
Joy C — Google review
I loved this museum and enjoyed the videos on the different ceramic techniques. Shame the 3rd floor wasn't open so there weren't as many contemporary objects as I would have hoped(probably if there were more in the shop than on display), and not sure the future of ceramics section really worked, however, it is a beautiful space and the library is a wonderful resource and I was very jealous of whoever gets to use that. The staff there were very helpful and I will definitely come back. I think that reviewer who left two stars is very demanding and ungrateful of what they experienced.

NT80 entrance fee. 2 storeys of exhibits, mainly on the history of ceramics in Taiwan, how it started, how it was part of everyday life from being large containers for shipping purposes initially to daily life such as plates, bowls, food moulds to spiritual needs (in terms of deity statues and temples) to decorative (tiles, window, vases) and even as medical equipment (to grind or boil medication) etc. L1 is a display of modern day glazing techniques. I like that they have the audio guide on Messenger, so it's free-of-charge, self service, on your own device. There are also hands-on workshop here to make your own pottery item but because it takes time to fire the product, you won't be able to bring it home with you immediately after the session. There's also a big park behind the museum where they've some ceramic pieces on display.

A quiet little local museum in this quiet town of Yingge Building itself is quite a sight, as well as the exhibition are interesting, learned a lot about ceramics, based on it is a symbolic business in the region …however there are lots of room for whoever is managing to improve Love the buddhism figurines, so cute

So much better that initially thought. So spacious well designed. Unfortunately not enough time to visit the garden, will do that next time!

A ceramics museum in Yingge, free entry for local New Taipei City citizens, NTWD$80 for tourists. About 15 minutes walk from Yingge Railway Station. Displaying the history of ceramics industry in Taiwan. Not crowded in weekdays, not all the area are opening. A garden which is free entrance just connecting the museum.

Sanxia Old Street

Mentioned on

Heritage building
Sights & Landmarks
Sanxia Old Street is a charming and historic street known for its traditional red-brick buildings, shops, food vendors, and a historic temple. The street dates back to the early 1900s during the Japanese occupation and offers plenty of photo opportunities with its unique architecture. It is located at the confluence of three rivers and was once an important transport hub for various goods. Visitors can explore the old merchant houses and residences that reflect the town's prosperous past.
This is a charming old street filled with original authentic architecture. The shops sell mostly tourist items and souvenirs. There is not much to buy here. The temple near by is worth a tour. It has ornate columns and roofs. There's a lot of history to this temple.
Leland Y — Google review
less people during weekday still have traffic on this alley. Shops open about 60-70% if you love to do photo weekday is a lot easier to het great shots
Pimm S — Google review
Kind of a side trip for a day if you’re visiting the greater Taipei Many historical buildings, houses and temples that connects the township, full of nostalgic vibes and some photogenic scenes that offers great selfies Again, either taking a bus tour to visit or a cute little commuter train would be a nice way to get to Sanxia old street
Jackie’s O — Google review
Charming tiny (Baroque style building street) though it looks a bit different to those in Europe. it will be perfect and safer if they close the street for pedestrians ONLY area during the busy days , to better appreciate it, try to avoid the weekends and bank holidays and don’t forget to visit the temple nearby.
Andrea P — Google review
It’s such a beautiful area. Great spot to capture historical architecture. Lots of fun shops and food to try and check out. It feels like a “night market” except it’s during the day. By 6ish, most of the shops are closed. We tried the famed “golden triangle” buns and they do not disappoint. Lots of flavors to choose from. So glad we came!
E C — Google review
The place is nice and close to the temple that you can roam around after the temple to look for some souvenirs and foods as well. Highly recommended.
Mai L — Google review
Sanxia old street with the temple and the street food is so nice in Taiwan ❤️. It's our culture and easy life here.
賴昀心(Amazing G — Google review
A nice historic street with beautiful old architecture and a range of stores. The local speciality is cow horn bread (think of a croissant shape but with a chewier harder bagel style bread). It’s nice that both sides of the street are well preserved and that the street is mostly pedestrianized. This is similar to many old streets in Taiwan, but it’s worth a visit due to it being next to a particularly interesting temple. Note: if driving you should find parking and walk to this area as it’s quite crowded.

Daxi Old Street

Mentioned on

Historical place
Sights & Landmarks
Daxi Old Street, located in Taoyuan, Taiwan, is a charming historic district that provides a window into traditional Taiwanese culture. The street is lined with well-preserved buildings dating back to the late 19th century Japanese rule over Taiwan. Visitors can explore specialty shops, cafes, and stalls offering traditional foods and local handicrafts. Notable attractions in the area include Lee Teng-fan's Ancient Residence and Daxi Wude Hall.
Pretty laid back place with tons of food. If you love cultural things and old buildings, worth to drop by. It is very outskirt and the tourist bus timing is pretty off from the published schedule. Check the local website instead (dun rely on google)
Kee C — Google review
It's a street with old looking architecture. The district is known for their tofu products such as Douhua (silken tofu desert) and braised tofu. I arrived here around 7AM and most stalls are closed, they open around 9AM onwards.
Marc J — Google review
Very unique culturally immersive district. We only visited Taipei for one day and came to this district via Uber. We are Americans. The food, people, and architecture was a great experience for the short time we were there.
Jeffrey H — Google review
Daxi has done a great job preserving the facades and old buildings. Definitely worth a visit for the small town atmosphere.
Edward Z — Google review
Come to see this old street with food and things you can buy. The scenery is nice too.

The street is still asleep before 11am. Lots of walking to see other views. It is nice and quiet.

We visited Daxi old street and had a great time walking around looking at the stores! But what stood out even more were the street performers. They had incredible energy and aura, clearly loving every moment of singing and performing for visitors. I truly hope they make it big.

Window on World Theme Park

Theme park
Water & Amusement Parks
If you're seeking a delightful family adventure, look no further than the Window on World Theme Park. This enchanting destination features over 130 meticulously crafted models of iconic global landmarks at a 1/25 scale, making it a miniature marvel to explore. Beyond the impressive replicas, visitors can enjoy thrilling rides and an exciting water park that opens during the summer months of July and August. While the rides may not be brand new, they still offer plenty of fun for both kids and adults alike.
Even though it's a Sunday, we needn't line up for long to play on the amusement park facilities. I really loved that.
Mena A — Google review
A fun place to bring your kids. Agree with many other reviews. The miniature world is a bit dated but it’s still appreciated, especially with the hot climate. Had no idea there was an actual amusement park inside where you have to take a train across. All the rides are free! They also have little kids rides (90cm to 110cm). Be warned, the water rides get you drenched (Requiring change of clothes drenched). You can buy a plastic rain cover set for 50NT. Didn’t try the food.
Iku Y — Google review
One park, two atmospheres. This theme consists of actually two different locations. One is their original park with miniature buildings, trains, yards and more. Main focus is Taiwan, Japan and China. Very well designed park with small trees like Japanese park. Also some moving elements like trains and airplanes. Although outdated, great to see! Then you can take the train to the other section of the park that is completely different. Walking to this section is another option when the queue is too long for the train. Takes about 15 minutes by foot. The second section is more like a Taiwan theme park with roller coasters, many slot machines, water park, and vendor selling lots of snacks. No clear focus on the miniatures world. It also have two small parks to introduce some European and American buildings, but it is clear to me that they spend significant less effort to make this stand out. No moving elements and less detail to the park itself. Don't get me wrong, still nice to walk around, but different feeling compared to first section of the park. What stood out that there were so many commercials from PEPSI, would be better to brand it to Window on Pepsi :). The branding changed btw some years ago to Window on World, but that has not everywhere (such as at the entrance) been updated. So in general, yes I enjoyed the park but the park clearly lacks focus: either focus on standard theme park or on miniature zed world. Price recommendation: 350 twd max.
Kaspar ( — Google review
This is a place that I have visited as a child more than 30 years ago and it was a nice nostalgic place to bring my kids to now. It was fun to explore the miniature worlds and find places I had seen when I was a child, not much has changed in a good way! Then we spent majority of the time since it was hot and humid at the water park area and indoor play area (playground, merry go round and dining). The water park was pretty vast and had many areas of play for different ages of kids. As foreign visitors, we did not know prior to going but it is required to wear swim caps so stock up before you go or you can purchase at their gift shop as well which we did for about $70NT - $120NT. There was plenty to keep small ones occupied for the day and they did not want to leave, great place for some water play in the hot humid summer. Also they have stroller rentals for reasonable prices which made the visit easier with small ones and toddlers. Highlights were the big water ride and train ride to the water park. We went on a summer week day which was not too crowded at all. Also, it’s not super easy to get to by public transportation, we took car service/taxi to get there.

充滿歡樂回憶的地方~~ We had such a wonderful time visiting the Miniature World theme park! My child was absolutely thrilled exploring all the beautifully detailed scenes, each one carefully designed and full of imagination. Since our visit was during the Halloween season, the park was decorated with festive pumpkins, lights, and spooky yet fun displays, adding an extra layer of excitement. It was a magical experience that created so many joyful memories for our family, and we’re already looking forward to visiting again.
Jeff Y — Google review
An amazingly adorable place to visit! During my visit, there was a huge promotion for the ticket, made the visit even more worth it! If you have kids, definitely bring them over here. Lots of attractions to see and to experience. During summer time is better because they open their water park on July and August only. Keep in mind during these months the park can be crowded even on weekdays, and the sun shines so bright! So don't forget to pack water, sunscreen, and wear jackets if needed. Also don't forget to bring swimsuit and umbrella as well. The employees all are very friendly and cheerful, really recommended for a family visit, or even a date!

This theme park is amazing. It has operated for more than 20 years, but the miniatures, indoor/outdoor games are still managed very well. I like their miniatures of collections, they are awesome! It's also a nice place to play the bumped car, water coaster 🎢🌊

Leofoo Village Theme Park is a long-standing park that offers various themed areas with thrilling rides, interactive animal shows, and even a steam train. Visitors staying at the Leofoo Resort can enjoy activities such as animal and plantation tours, African dance performances, and bird photo opportunities. The park is ideal for families looking for mild thrills and animal encounters, with highlights including the informative Train Ride showcasing herbivore animals.
Drove by decided to check out the hotel - the parking is free if you’re stopping for less than 30min beyond that it’s 200twd no matter how long you park. You can go to their viewing deck past the lobby where you can see so many animals without having to pay for the park or stay at the hotel. They also have a coffee shop / restaurant facing this courtyard zoo. A thunderstorm hit shortly after and the African band was so professional still singing even though no one other than us was there to listen to them sing. Best to plan for 3 full days here and hope that there is no rain!

This was a fun amusement park about an hour drive from Taipei. Definitely worth the special price unlimited ride day pass for non-Taiwanese (550ntd on KKday). There is also a water park that is connected, but we didn't go. We arrived at 9:30am right as the park opened and spent a full day there (until 4pm, park closes at 5 pm). It was sunny with a bit of cloud cover and about 33°c with lots of places to get out of the sun. So it was comfortable, but hot. Most of the rides were up and running and there were virtually no lines for any rides must of the day. The rides were fairly good with all the standard favorites. Tower drop, boat over a water fall, pirate ship, spinning tea cups, salt n pepper shaker, ring of fire, mini rollercoaster ect.... The one unique ride that stood out was the screaming Condor this is a mag lev powered top rail roller coaster that launches you at high speed about 7 stories in the air straight up and down on a cork srew track. Only issue was the delay between rides as the system needs time to cool down. There are several other activities including VR, small video arcade, grabmachines, and typical carnival games (no shooting gallery). The park is divided into the Arabian, south Pacific and wild west sections. There is an animal/safari section. But the safari is pretty lacking. Basically just monkeys, some typical herbivores in small pens and the carnivore bus tour was hardly worth the time. Bus driver raced around and didn't do a good job of lining the bus up for people to take pictures. Don't waste your time. Many of the restaurants and snack huts weren't open ( this was a Thursday not a holiday day). Still there was enough options to get by and we ate burgers and got some Turkish ice cream. All in all very worthy discounted price of 550ntd for the day pass. I certainly would not be willing to pay full ticket price which is around 1200 to 1600 NTD depending on your age. If you can get the discounted tickets go for it. As soon as the staff's on my white face it was a non-issue even though I was going in with some local Taiwanese we all ended up with the discounted price. We were never asked for any sort of ID but it's always a good policy to have at least a picture of your passport on your phone just in case.

A great place to spend the day! My biggest remark is the lovely sir who drives the bus. We stayed until almost 9 pm for the Halloween event and have no way to go home. He saw us waiting and kindly drive us to Taipei even though we were only three (my friend, my husband and me). So amazing to have a place that cares about its customers like this. I wish I knew the driver’s name, he definitely deserves the praise 🙏🏽 Further more the staff is overall kind and patient, the rides are fun and the animal zone is amazing I would recommend it 100% (though the haunted house was a bit too scary for me)

My wife and I had an amazing time at Leofoo theme Park. The weather was excellent, the park was much better managed than I expected, clean, organized, and very well maintained. The staff were extremely polite and helpful, and prices for ticket, food and souvenirs were reasonable. The safari experience is the greatest highlight. The train and bus rides brought us very close to the star animals like lions, tigers, zebras, rhinos, hippos, giraffes, buffalo and more. It has lesser animal than Taipei zoo for sure but I enjoyed here much more! We also loved the Monkey Skyway ride, where we could enjoy an aerial view of the monkeys and other animals at our own pace. We visited on Monday afternoon and it wasn’t crowded at all, no waiting time for most rides. The water park was closed (was told it only open in summer), but we honestly didn’t feel like we missed anything because there was already so much to enjoy. We should have arrived earlier, time flew by too quickly. Out of my 10 day trip in Taiwan, I enjoyed here the most. Thank you Leofoo for a wonderful experience. We will definitely be back!

Leofoo Village Theme Park is one of Taiwan’s most iconic amusement destinations, located in Guanxi Township, Hsinchu County. It uniquely combines a large-scale theme park with a safari wildlife zoo, making it a standout attraction for families, thrill-seekers, and animal lovers alike. Key Features Four Themed Areas: The park is divided into four main zones, each with its own immersive environment: Wild West: Experience the American frontier with classic western architecture, live shows, and the park’s most famous ride, the Screaming Condor—an inverted shuttle roller coaster that launches riders at high speed. Other attractions include the Grand Canyon Rapids and themed dining options like steakhouses and burger joints. African Safari: This section doubles as Taiwan’s largest open-range safari, home to around 70 species and nearly 1,000 animals, including rare white tigers, lions, zebras, and baboons. Visitors can tour the safari by train (Nairobi Express) or bus for close-up animal encounters. South Pacific: A tropical-themed area with water rides, thrill rides, and vibrant scenery. The log flume and drop tower are major highlights. Arabian Palace: Step into a magical, adventure-filled world inspired by Arabian tales, featuring rides like the Sultan’s Adventure and the Flying Horse monorail. Safari Experience: Leofoo Village is renowned for its safari park, where guests can observe animals in spacious, naturalistic habitats—an experience unique among Taiwan’s amusement parks. Family-Friendly Attractions: The park offers over 30 rides and attractions, catering to all ages—from adrenaline-pumping roller coasters to gentle rides and interactive animal experiences. Dining and Amenities: Multiple themed restaurants and food stalls are available throughout the park, with options ranging from Western-style meals to local snacks. Facilities are family-friendly, with clean restrooms and stroller access. Accessibility: Leofoo Village is an easy day trip from Taipei and offers enough activities to fill a full day, or even a weekend if you stay at the adjacent safari hotel or visit the waterpark. Visitor Tips Arrive early to make the most of your visit, as the park closes around 5 PM and some food stalls may close earlier. Bring water and snacks, as there are no free water stations, though bottled water is available for purchase. Check the show schedule upon arrival to catch live performances and water fountain shows. Dress appropriately for the season—winters can be chilly and windy. Leofoo Village Theme Park remains a classic and must-visit destination for anyone traveling in Taiwan, offering a blend of amusement park thrills and up-close wildlife encounters that appeal to all ages.

Neiwan Old Street

Historical place
Sights & Landmarks
This traditional street is popular with visitors as it is home to many restaurants & gift shops.
An excellent street filled with tones of very reasonably priced street vendors!! One of my favorite ones throughout Taiwan yet with a large variety of interesting foods and items for purchase. Everyone was very nice and the streets were cleaned with public bathrooms available! This is the last train stop on the line and worth riding the train up to it so you can also go hike in the nearby trails to the rivers and waterfalls! Otherwise enjoy the streets and foods!
Jacob M — Google review
It's a very pleasant street with many food options. In addition to the beautiful view of the bridge.

Monday = most shops closed. Couldn't get there on a weekend, so not Neiwan's fault 😌. Have some fun at the go cart track ( the first one)

Went on a weekend but not as crowded manage to enjoy it. Lots of nice food along the way up to the train station. Nice meat skewers, yam cake, lu wei and ice cream. Plan more time there to explore the place didn't get to fully enjoy it as I was with tour.

Beautiful old street in Taiwan. Take a one hour slow train ride from Hsinchu train station to view and enjoy the scenery to and from this destination. I was here on a Monday and many shops were not open. I imagine that the crowd and activities will be a lot more on weekends. Lots of street food and sit-down restaurants and souvenirs and snack shops. All the stall owners are genuinely sincere and happy to chat with you.

Lively and amazing old street in Hsinchu. However, most shops are closed except for the market on weekdays and there is nothing much to do. On weekends, however, all shops are open. On weekend the streets are extremely lively and sell local produce that tastes pretty good. Recommended to come on weekends only.

A very authentic old street to go and walk around you can find lots of local delightful street food and a cafe to hang around.. feel sad didn't have enough time to visit an 100 yes old church.. also nearby old street next to it has a karting circuit and playground park for kids to play. Love the place lots. Will definitely plan for my next trip again for missing spots..

Long-standing chain selling the brand's contemporary Swiss-made watches in a variety of styles.
(Translated by Google) The female employee with short hair has a very good service attitude and the battery replacement is also very fast. When I asked about the price of replacing the battery, I was told it was 1800-2000, which was scary. 3. When I asked why it was so expensive to replace the battery, the lady couldn’t explain clearly. When she wanted to ask further, she seemed impatient. 4. The lady said: You can exchange it with someone else. You don’t have to wait three weeks and it’s cheaper. I would like to ask, is this the level of Tissot’s education and training and counter store staff? Or is it a watch that costs tens of thousands, and only idiot consumers will buy it? Hsinchu Zoo, the oldest zoo in Taiwan dating back to 1936, is a small yet charming establishment that recently underwent renovations in 2019. With over 300 animals from approximately 100 different species, including endangered species from Asia's tropical rainforests and native Taiwanese wildlife, the zoo attracts around 300,000 visitors annually.
Definitely a zoo and park for everyone , so exciting and satisfying to watch animals in real life, not only in YouTube and Geographic channel🤣😅. So I would recommend you as well to pay a visit your relatives lol. And if you catch hungriness here, a food nearby is affordable and delicious of course.

I visited during weekend.. To be honest, area is not large, only few animals..Getting parking area is very difficult. However, near the zoo area, there is some other places, a sports complex, a park and a traditional market.

Hsinchu Zoo is one of my favorite places to visit from time to time, especially with a lot of green landscape and quite smooth access trails for kids and the elderly. Besides those amazing spots of animals living , there is a fabulous Starbucks coffee shop in the Park area where used to be one of historical buildings in Hsinchu Zoo. However, we found the stairway access to the 2nd floor of Starbucks Coffee Shop was full of SPIDERWEBS almost everywhere , which gave us an astonishing sense of Halloween Decoration Could Hsinchu Zoo Administration Team please make the environment more attractive with tidiness and cleanliness for Zoo visitors a better impression. We really appreciate the friendly atmosphere you create for Zoo Visitors. Thank you so much.

A zoo in Hsinchu, a small scale zoo only. Not too far away from the railway station, about 10 minutes walk from the station. Spending about an hour in the zoo is more than enough. The animals inside seems not very active and some of them looks quite old. The entry fee is not expensive, it cost around NTWD$45 for an adult ticket while buy it in apps.

Chenghuang Temple Night Market is a bustling market located around the Chenghuang Temple, offering a variety of local delicacies and street food. Known for its lively atmosphere, this market is popular among tourists and locals alike. Visitors can indulge in Taiwanese street food items such as pork balls, spring rolls, and bouncy meatballs. The market's proximity to the temple adds to its vibrant charm, making it a must-visit destination in Hsinchu.
This was my first night market and it's awesome and amazing. Some many people, great food, great treats, and a big sense of community. While waiting at one place (see other reviews for it) a lady the man cook were joking with which other. I laughed too, even tho I have no idea what they are saying. She walked away and came back to give me a Temple Souvenir. Like I said COMMUNITY She is the lady in the picture

You have to try this one “ Oyster 🦪 Omelette “ it is not just traditional Oyster Omelette but it is a very unique Crispy Omelette:) This is perfect 🤩 and fresh , I have tried so many oyster omelette in Taiwan But now this is my Favorite ❤️ if you like spicy flavor !! You have to tell the chef that you want to add the chili 🌶️ souce 😍😍wow !!! So Good !! Moreover such big amount of oyster 🦪 omelette which is a lot bigger than my face😄 only costs 80 NTD(2.5 USD)

A not so big night market. But it is place which sells Hsinchu famous food, mee fen, fried oyster, "Gan" ball etc It is located outside the temple, and about 10min walk from HsinChu TRA station.

Smaller than the famous night markets in Taiwan but it does the job if you like the Taiwanese food. Many small stalls presenting the variety of food. Its clean and hygienic as usual. Nearby places and streets are worth the stroll. Lovely scenes and beautiful locations. Better to rent the YouBike bicycle and roam around, you will fall in love with it.

We ate here en route to 清境农场 (Cingjing a.k.a. Qingjing Farm). Lunch venue was at this shop" 王家蚵仔煎" located in the vicinity of Hsinchu's City God Temple inside sort of an alleyway lined with food stalls selling the city's all-time favourite and old-time flavours such as Hsinchu rice vermicelli (新竹米粉), fish balls and pork balls (魚丸, 贡丸). The duck egg pancakes sold along the streets were also delicious. We bought 4 pieces for NT$30. The jam is home-made; there's chocolate, custard, lemon, red bean and plain as filling options for those pancakes. This night market operates earlier than most other night markets found in Taiwan but the stalls are not as many as the rest.
Samantha H — Google review
This temple is definitely on the list of place to visit if you are traveling to discover Hsinchu. Despite being old and full of history, this temple has interesting design and it's usually quite lively. But the surrounding scene, full of local restaurants, just a few steps away from the main altar, is surprisingly funny. It's like a "Let's pray for whatever we believe or expect, and then, let's enjoy some local food speciality to celebrate it".
Martin M — Google review
This is one of the must-see attractions if you are in Hsinchu, which is not saying much. It is much like a night market except it only sells food, closes early, and has a temple attached.....But there are stands, small eateries and sitting spaces and the vibe is similar if you catch my drift. It is a very cultural experience. They sometimes have events there like a Hakka pig butchering or a lion dance. It's wonderful and you can smell the sweet incense from the mall. The toilets are back there and they are clean enough as far as night market bathrooms go. You can get all the Hsinchu staples here, vermicelli, pork balls, squid soup, oyster pancakes, and crystal meat balls stamped with different red shapes depending on the stall or flavors. They also have other specialty foods like fried black water caltrop, fried taro balls, fresh herbal tea. Highly recommend!

Smangus

Tribal headquarters

Remote mountain village of indigenous Atayal people, with cultural displays & hikes to giant trees.
The serene environment of the village offers a peaceful retreat, perfect for relaxation. The indigenous cuisine, seasoned with the fragrant Maqaw spice, is a true highlight. The trails are relatively easy, making it an ideal destination for a leisurely getaway.

Smangus - God’s tribe !! It took us almost 4 hours from Taiwan to Smangus. Beware of there were traffic regulations of these winding roads into the tribe. There were coop in the main parking lot to serve breakfast / lunch and dinner . There was a small convenience store next to the coop . Many log cabins for accommodations. I love this beautiful historical tribe: many beautiful hiking trails. Clean bathrooms available for this 5 K route. The attitude was around 1600 meter. It did not get chilly just comfortable . The most famous hiking trails to the red wood area was flat and manageable. Alone the trail, the vegetation changed with so much to appreciate . A very enjoyable place to visit .

What a marvelous place! It is, indeed, a God’s tribe. In addition to the amazing views, you can feel the fabulous chi to really turn you on once you entered the entrance. Actually, kind of planning my next trip already.

(Translated by Google) I love all the children in this deep mountain. Intuitively, I am the Atayal people. Tainan came here. Although the road is far away, the mood is surging. Here, you can watch all Atayal people carefully. Their innocence, simplicity and enthusiasm make you feel that they live in more than two hours away from Neiwan, they are content and happy and united. Children above the junior high school must leave this hometown where they lived for a long time, go to Zhudong to study, and even go to high schools to other counties and cities. After graduating from university, they will return home to work together to take care of this land. Every time the car slowly left the park, my sorrow came alive, this is no good, when will I come back? The leisure and romance of travel is that when you set off for your destination, you already have that atmosphere and mood ready, right?

Nanzhuang Old Street

Points of Interest & Landmarks
This historic lane is also called Osmanthus Street due to its associations with the local drink.
We arrived here at noon. It was not crowded during weekday. We parked our car at a lower street and entered into a provision shops that was selling lots of peanuts, snacks, rice sacks and household products. We bought a few items and then headed straight to the street where the dessert stall was located. As weather was humid we bought a few icy cold dessert and shared amongst ourselves. Delicious and not too sweet. We furthered into the street which lined with stalls but they were mostly selling similar items like sweets / tidbits / fruits / biscuits / gingko. We actually stopped at a stall that was selling deep fried battered squid, fish balls etc. They were fresh and tasty. The female proprietor was very polite. I highly recommend this stall, she was generous too. Another interesting one was the souvenir stall where we bought some pretty socks here. They were selling lots of hats and little knickknacks for young and old. Took some lovely pictures in this area before heading to tour Bei Pu 北铺.

Visited this charming old street a little later in the evening, around 5 PM, and most of the shops (about 80%) were already closed. The few that were still open were warmly inviting people to try their drinks—very friendly folks! Honestly, I kind of regret not buying their osmanthus syrup—it smelled amazing. That said, I probably wouldn’t come back. I had a rather unpleasant encounter when I wasn’t sure where to throw my rubbish. I saw a large plastic bag by the roadside and assumed it was for collecting trash as there are some in it, but someone (from quite a distance!) scolded me in a harsh tone. Even though I understand Chinese, I could really feel the aggressiveness, and it was quite off-putting. Anyway she is saying that rubbish bag is belong to her, I cannot throw anything inside.

This is another old town we visited in Nanzhuang, Miaoli. Here, you can try some Hakka snacks and meal. There is a temple and a suspended bridge nearby. The bakery is quite famous for their bread I was told and usually gets sold out. Couldn't resist buying one! A very recommended restaurant will be the 客家大汤圆! They serve very authentic and delicious local dishes. Be sure to call to make a reservation as they do not take walk ins. They only open when there is reservation. The lady will cook dishes with whatever ingredients she has for the day. But we requested for 梅菜扣肉 and rice ball. Don't forget to buy their 腐乳! one of the best i have tried!

It could be the most famous heritage old street in Miaoli County, but the stuffs here are similar to any other old street, and seems not so friendly for foreign visitors. If you're traveling here without a local guide/friend, better consider combine other stops in your trip before you spending hours of driving and hard time in parking.

A nice place to go if you want to discover a lot local and traditional products. There’s a lot of little restaurants but be careful because some of them can be really dirty. It’s a pity… But you can discover a lot of good products still. We went during the week so it wasn’t complicated to park (just walk a little bit). We went here on a 2 days 1 night trip, and realized its too far from taipei and underwhelming for a 2d1n trip. Almost 2 hours to get to the place n 2 hours to get back to taipei it felt too far for what it offered. having visited in summer, it was too hot to enjoy the farm much. Perhaps a visit during colder season would be much nicer. The animal farms were just okay but it was a big area for kids to roam. At night there is diy activity to join. I think with the big space, they could consider outdoor movie night or some outdoor games for kids.. Hotpot was priced at nt500 per pax. They can cater to muslim requirements for food. Service was ok, they helped us call a cab, but they dont help with bags to room (but luckily my room is in ground floor so all good). My room was for 2 adults 2 child, but for bfast i only get 2 sets.. my daughter really liked the ice cream there too.

Great accomodation with plenty of things to do with the kids. There are activities such as feeding the goats, Guinea pigs, rabbits, and ducks and also DIY for the kids such as baking macarons and making ice cream. There’s restaurants at the accomodation that serve the three meals but I recommend going over the weekend rather than weekdays. Weekdays have significantly less crowds but most of the eateries aren’t open. Though if you drive out then no issues. Rooms are new and well furnished. Large enough to have twin queen beds and space for a travel cot and luggages on the floor with enough of walking room. Customer service for the most part are okay. But there is a lady at the main dining hall who obviously hates you and hates life. She seemed to have found enjoyment to let everyone know of her feelings and nothing out of her mouth or action were polite or kind. There was an instance where she wanted to serve hot food over my 2 year whilst she was in the baby chair. I told her to go around as there was plenty of space to push the food trolley between the tables (restaurant was empty). She refused and said I need to move my daughter. Obviously I said no and she begrudgingly went around. Shocking behaviour and it’s sad that the whole experience was spoilt by one person. Dinner at the main dining hall was interesting (picture attached), it was tempura prawns with rainbow sprinkles…

Over all this location is good. But this food court experience is real bad. The people treat NO Good, no respect. That’s why I changed 5 star to one star. Please hire good people who can treat the customer good way. Nothing I am getting here for free. pink color dress 2 ladies attitude real bad.

Came here for pony ride and farm stay. There was a playground too! •Duck Parade: awesome. Attended twice. •Fed baby ducks •Fed baby goats •Fed baby cows •Fed Sheeps (self-service) •Fed goats (self-service) •Pony rides were awesome. My daughter took multiple times. The room was very beautifully renovated. It was as per the pictures on their website. •Dinner was okay. Could be better cos could taste the frozen chicken. •Breakfast was simple and fair. There was a shuttle buggy who will bring you to the accommodation from the carpark, and vice versa as you check out. the downside: •there are sandflies during summer near the farm animals. Visited during Sep-25. My wife and I was bitten quite numerous times on our feet.

Xinshe Sea of Flowers, also known as the Provence of Taiwan, is a renowned destination for its stunning flower fields and vibrant festivals. The annual Sea of Flowers in Xinshe festival takes place from November to December, drawing crowds to its expansive grounds adorned with colorful cosmos and sunflowers. In addition to the breathtaking floral displays, visitors can explore booths offering agricultural products and educational opportunities to learn more about Taiwan's agricultural practices.
u can go maybe atleast 330pm so its not that scorching hot,tho the wind is in cool breeze...parking....there is a lot and i find it reasonable.food, and veggies are for sale there too...not pricey! it is literal sea of flowers...so beautiful...

Annual event by the locals. Nice walk about in the sea of flowers. Definitely instagram-able. Entrance to the park is free. The organising committee even arranged for complementary shuttle service to ferry the visitors from various train stations to the event. Very much appreciated. And like most events, there are plenty of street food and snacks; ice cold drinks to keep the stomach happy and heat away.

The Xinshe Sea of Flowers was an absolutely breathtaking experience for me and my family. Visiting during this annual event in Taichung, Taiwan was like stepping into a colorful dreamscape. The fields stretched on with vibrant blossoms—cosmos, sunflowers, marigolds—each creating a stunning patchwork of color that seemed endless. The festival's thoughtful theme added an extra layer of wonder, with intricate floral designs and installations that were both whimsical and impressive. My wife, mother-in-law, and our one-year-old baby all enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the unique displays. It was a perfect blend of natural beauty and creative artistry. The educational centers on site were also a pleasant surprise, offering insights into Taiwan’s floral and agricultural history, making the visit as informative as it was enjoyable. And with free admission, it felt like a gift to both locals and tourists. This is a must-visit if you're ever in Taiwan during late November to early December. Our experience was unforgettable, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a serene and colorful escape. 🌸🌻🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Free transportation from nearby cities, no entry fee, many booths provide freebies or samples, besides they are many food stalls on site. You can spend half day there easily.

A bit of a drive from Taichung, but a great place to see flowers, some structures and people watching. place was jam packed on a sunday afternoon. Besides flowers, lots of small market vendors selling nick nacks and food. Parking was a bit of a mess and Uber took a while to get from Xinshe to Taichung. Absolutely worth a visit but be patient.

Super crowded. The place is nice! There was a free shuttle to get there.

A lot of flower and thanks for the good weather too. I visited last year Nov. And, there was an event here. There was a small market there selling the organic goods and some snack. We are enjoy here but kindly check the flower seasons before you arrange a trip to here. You may skip here if you are visit here after the flower blossom season or raining season.
Jask L — Google review
Loved the flowers here! So pretty and organized! Pick weekdays to go so it’s less crowded, they do close at 4:30pm so try to get there early! Flower season might already be over this year, was scheduled for 11/11/23-12/3/23 so pretty short. I was there a couple of weeks ago. Worth checking out if you’re looking for a place to go in the area, a bit harder to get to without a car.

Gaomei Wetland in Taiwan is a hidden gem! The scenic views of the wetlands and the sea are breathtaking. The boardwalks and trails offer a peaceful stroll with nature. The stunning row of wind turbines silhouetted against the horizon are especially gorgeous during sunset when the golden hour lights up the sky. Timing your visit for sunset is a must - the views are simply stunning! 🌅 Afterward, stroll through the nearby shops and indulge in some sweet treats. A must-visit for nature lovers and those looking for a serene escape from the city. 🌿🐦🌊"

Beautiful scenery, best to go just before sunset. Quite windy. Nice local pastries on the main lane. You may also walk around the area, there's a temple worth visiting
Lihi L — Google review
The weather was not cooperating, overcast, dark and very strong wind. The wind was so strong that you could be blown off the slippery boardwalk into the water. Fortunately the boardwalk was still open, we risked a little walking to the very end of the boardwalk. Too bad we did not have the chance to see a sunset there, but the views were very special.

This enchanting destination features lush trails and vibrant lavender fields, making it an ideal spot for a serene escape. Founded by two passionate women who left their urban lives behind, Lavender Cottage has blossomed into a beloved garden farm attraction since its inception. Visitors can enjoy delightful local cuisine at the on-site restaurant or browse unique gifts at the shop while soaking in the tranquil atmosphere.
Visited here to celebrate valentines day. Suitable for couple or family with kids for a romantic getaway! With different zone to explore and have some nice lavender ice cream or lavender latte! The staff 澄钰 very friendly and recommended us some tips! Awesome!
Karine L — Google review
Very disappointed. They should not say they are lavender forest but I think they can call lavender Gardens. Anyway I went there April 2025 no lavender at all, only small garden for hydrangeas. Also the ticket includes free ice-cream but the machine broken so they offer buy 1 get 1 free ice-cream instead. It was acceptable but also not our responsibility. You should keep maintaining. Staffs are untrained, everyone look confusing when I ask something. Don't say it is not the lavender season. If it's not the season you should closed and keep maintaining the good 'garden'.
CK K — Google review
This place is lovely! Even when the lavender is out of season, the other flowers are gorgeous to walk around and look at. It is small and a little hard to get to if you're a tourist, but very peaceful, and their ice cream is so yummy. It's cool too to see the kinds of products they can make from the plants. The staff is also very kind. I couldn't find a taxi to get me off the mountain and went to ask one of them for help, and she instantly made a couple calls to find me a ride and even informed one of the other employees of the situation too so that both of them could help me if I needed while waiting.

Peaceful and Refreshing Day Out Visited Taipei Lavender Garden and really enjoyed it. It’s a calm spot to unwind and just enjoy being surrounded by nature. There are lots of lovely lavender and rose products, soaps, creams, massage oils, teas and everything smells amazing. They also have aromatherapy areas, which add to the relaxing vibe. We tried the lavender, oolong, and lemongrass ice cream, all really good and not too sweet. The cafe serves nice picnic-style food that you can enjoy outdoors, which makes the whole experience feel cozy and laid-back. There are walking trails around the garden, so you can stroll around, take in the scenery, and just slow down a bit.
Gina G — Google review
Very expensive for entry and they give you 100nt tokens to take off when you buy in the grounds, but it’s very expensive, for example a coffee is 180nt for just a basic black coffee. The ice cream they sell is 150nt with token you still need to pay 50nt. If you’re giving token I think items should be a small bit lower in cost, everything is inflated. The one star is solely because of the cost it’s very expensive considering the local cost in Taiwan. The ground are beautiful and well kept, staff are nice, the girl at the entry where you buy the ticket is really nice. I don’t think I’d comeback due to the cost. But overall was a nice experience.

Unless you drive , otherwise, it’s a long way to visit there. And, It’s relatively small that I expected. Maybe I visited it in late September and low season, not many places are truly spectacular compared to the lavender season. And you have to be creative if you want to take some great photos with different flowerings season.

Nestled in the heart of Taichung, Maple Garden is a delightful urban oasis that offers a refreshing escape from the bustling city life. This charming green space spans 3 hectares and features a picturesque U-shaped layout, complete with a serene pond teeming with fish and turtles. Visitors can meander along winding paths surrounded by vibrant red trees and lush grass, making it an ideal spot for leisurely strolls or quiet moments of reflection.
Very well designed city park. The park are located into a depress where a pond took the centre stage. Geese, turtle and fish populated the pond. Music will be heard through the speaker in the heart shaped building. They purposely pump water uphill to create a stream for you to enjoy the sight and sound. Some path are created via stones or wood chips giving you another terrain experience. Because large luxury apartment nearby, the sun was shielded. You could be at the pond edge but it's well shaded . Love the red bridge on the pond , creating certain aesthetic to the whole dimension. Only nit pick is it lacked of playground for kids to monkey around.

This is quite a wondrous place to visit. It is the only ecological park in Taiwan formed by digging deep into the ground. It's also an ideal place for many who have inclinations for a nice Taichung city view. No matter which season it is, walking in the Maple Garden is a visual enjoyment! You should definitely pay a visit to the infamous Daily greens, Kyoto. A tea house made from an old sake barrel! And yes the sky there is visually deep blue.

The Wenwu Temple in Taiwan is a stunning Chinese-style Taoist temple situated by a beautiful lake. It features two large lion statues guarding the entrance and three main halls within its complex. While one must climb a bit to reach the back of the temple, that area is highly recommended to see. It is regarded as one of the most exquisite temples in all of Taiwan and definitely worth visiting.
Wenwu temple is stunningly beautiful and big temple with the view of sun moon lake. The temple has multiple layers upwards and inside the temple is also looks very beautiful. On the other side of the temple a beautiful park with pullers behind brings the utmost beauty to the temple. From the top view of temple and the view of lake give the awesome experience of being there. It is a must go and spend some time if someone around the sun moon lake.

Wenwu Temple is a great place to enjoy beautiful views of Sun Moon Lake. It has a wide, open view and a grand atmosphere. The temple combines Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist elements in a beautiful and balanced design. The details of the carvings are very delicate. A Journey of Serenity and Splendor at Wenwu Temple ✨ Stepping into Wenwu Temple at Sun Moon Lake is an experience unlike any other. This is so much more than a temple—it's a breathtaking work of art with a soul-stirring view. The climb up the grand staircase feels like a pilgrimage, building anticipation for the magnificent red-and-gold architecture at the top. Every corner holds a new surprise, from the incredibly detailed carvings on the pillars to the vibrant, elaborate ceilings that seem to reach for the heavens. I could spend hours just admiring the craftsmanship. Inside, the atmosphere is so peaceful and contemplative. The main hall, with its majestic statues and golden altars, is a sight to behold. But my favorite parts were exploring the smaller details, like the wall filled with thousands of golden figures and the powerful dragon relief on the stairs. And of course, the panoramic view of Sun Moon Lake from the temple grounds is simply unmatched. The perfect place to pause, reflect, and just take it all in. If you're visiting Sun Moon Lake, don't miss this spiritual and visual feast. It's truly a highlight of the region.

Wenwu Temple is absolutely stunning and a must-visit if you're near Sun Moon Lake. The architecture is grand and rich with detail, blending traditional Chinese styles with a peaceful, almost spiritual atmosphere. The views overlooking the lake from the temple grounds are breathtaking — it's the perfect spot for photos and quiet reflection. I loved how well-maintained everything is, and there’s a real sense of history and culture throughout the complex. Whether you're into temples or just want a peaceful break with amazing scenery, Wenwu Temple won’t disappoint!

Though kid don't quite understand Chinese or have patience to finished reading the information around the temple, still have good time walking around and looking at the nice sculpture work. Absolutely stunning temple! Wenwu Temple truly impressed me - breathtaking views over the lake, beautiful architecture, and a peaceful atmosphere. LUKAS W — Google review
I was truly amazed by the breathtaking view—everywhere I looked, the scenery was absolutely stunning. The temple itself is incredibly spacious, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere perfect for exploring and appreciating its beauty. One of the highlights of this place is its collection of historical artifacts, each with its own story to tell. The intricate details and craftsmanship in these pieces reflect the rich cultural heritage of the temple, making it a fascinating destination for history lovers. Another unique experience here is feeding the koi fish inside the temple. Watching them gracefully swim while feeding them was both relaxing and enjoyable, adding a touch of tranquility to the visit. It’s a simple yet delightful activity that makes the experience even more memorable. As beautiful as the temple is during the day, it becomes even more magical at night. The lighting enhances the architectural details and creates a mesmerizing ambiance that feels almost surreal. The combination of traditional design, soft lights, and the peaceful surroundings makes for an unforgettable sight. This temple is truly a must-visit for anyone who appreciates history, culture, and stunning landscapes. I was captivated by its beauty and atmosphere, and I would definitely love to visit again!

The area not only boasts breathtaking natural beauty but also offers insights into the indigenous Thao tribe culture and unique local cuisine that reflects the biodiversity and heritage of the region.
A beautiful and stunning lake. The water color is beautiful. Come here as day trip from Taipei and it's worth The walkway around the lake is beautiful and well taken care too. There are many points of view in this lake. Temples, boat, bicycle renting. The area of this lake is huge and you can't cover it in one day. Famous, and for good reason. Many stop by here as a day trip, but doing so only leaves you underwhelmed. You only get to see the pier and surrounding shops, and never get to see what makes this place truly charming. IMO, the best way to experience Sun Moon Lake is to stay for at least 1 night, and embark on a bike ride during a day. Doing so gets you away from the crowds and gives you an opportunity to appreciate the scenery from various viewpoints around the lake.

The temple has become a bustling center of activity, surrounded by a marketplace with fortune-tellers, charm vendors, and votive offerings. Visitors can pass through a bizarre chicken statue for good fortune or pet a bronze chicken for luck in different aspects of life.
So many people here at noon on the Wednesday before Chinese New Year to pray for fortune gold, but parking was still available and the queue for fortune gold was very fast.hope everybody become rich...

My old man says that the public toilet here is 5-star. Even if you aren't into religion, you should check out the temple's toilet. I thought he is just exaggerating but man, he is right! The toilets are clean, spacious, organized, decorated with flowers and fountains, having no trace of smell, only beautiful classical music. Didn't know you could make a toilet a palace. And it's free to use! Toilets aside, the temple is frequented by people all over the island. It's known for the blessing of good fortune, manifested as the golden chicken. So many business owners visit the temple during the Lunar New Year to invite (or nudge) the golden chicken to their company/shop/factory.

Very crowded and famous site visit place, even during Monday morning. Citizens of Taiwan can borrow “fortune money” from the temple to assist your career!

祈求一整年的運勢及平安 There was once a shoemaker, who worked very hard and was very honest, but still he could not earn enough to live upon; and at last all he had in the world was gone, save just leather enough to make one pair of shoes. Then he cut his leather out, all ready to make up the next day, meaning to rise early in the morning to his work. His conscience was clear and his heart light amidst all his troubles; so he went peaceably to bed, left all his cares to Heaven, and soon fell asleep.

Amazing popular Buddha temple which you can borrow money as fortune funds. I am lucky to borrow 400 NT and need to return higher amount during next visit.

First time visiting this tiny but famous temple. Wow it is tiny but the amount of business it generates is staggering. Next time I'll borrow some seed fortune money for my business!

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Xitou Nature Education Area, located in central Taiwan, is a vast forest area with paved and unpaved trails as well as treetop paths. It was established for research purposes by the National Taiwan University and features educational information throughout. The park also includes unique natural attractions such as a heart-shaped tree and the 3,000-year-old cypress tree known as Shen Mu or God Tree. Additionally, visitors can explore the Japanese-inspired Monster Village with its eccentric statues and hidden secrets.
Absolutely love this place. Perfect for tree bathing. There are so many well paved trails leading to various beautiful scenery. It is also amazing to see a lot of elderly local Taiwanese with either hiking gear. There are rest areas serving meals and there is hot water dispenser.
Joshua S — Google review
When you hear the name “Monster Village,” it might sound eerie or even frightening but in reality, this place is full of natural charm and cultural surprises. Located in Taiwan, it feels like stepping into a corner of Japan, with its Japanese style architecture and a fun festival atmosphere filled with all kinds of traditional Japanese snacks and sweets. Surrounded by misty mountains and lush forests, the village has a mysterious, almost magical beauty. It offers a unique blend of nature and culture that feels like entering another world. The road leading up is quite winding, so patience is needed to reach the top but the journey is absolutely worth it. If you arrive in the morning, the sunshine adds a gentle warmth to the cool mountain air. But if you come in the afternoon, be prepared it gets chillier as the sun goes down. Still, the peaceful, slightly mysterious vibe makes the experience unforgettable.

Nestled in the lush mountains of Nantou County, Xitou Forest Recreational Area (溪頭自然教育園區) is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Managed by National Taiwan University, this scenic reserve offers well-maintained hiking trails, towering bamboo groves, and ancient cypress trees. The cool, misty climate makes it a refreshing retreat, especially during Taiwan’s hot summers. Visitors can explore highlights like the Skywalk, which provides breathtaking treetop views, and the University Pond, a tranquil spot surrounded by nature. Nearby, the charming Monster Village (妖怪村) adds a fun cultural twist with its Japanese-style architecture and playful monster-themed attractions. With its peaceful atmosphere, fresh mountain air, and diverse flora, Xitou is perfect for a relaxing getaway. Whether you’re hiking, taking photos, or simply enjoying the serene surroundings, this forest retreat is well worth a visit.

I visited in the weekend, no foreigner visitors here, 100% all taiwan people. Pros: clear signs & directions, recommended routes for leisure, easy & challenging levels, well-maintained tracks. Cons: no available trash bins & angry monkey will try to steal from your hands. If you have food, put it in your bag. Not as much plant diversity as expected.
Thi C — Google review
Forest recreation area, mainly for peaceful walks but possibly to learn more about the flora and its preservation or hunt for pictures. There are regular roads but closed to traffic, so most people will take them as it is the easiest way to navigate the park. But there are also some trails, to escape to quieter area, which can be welcome as the park can have a lot of visitors. 3 to 4 hours is a minimum to visit some spots like the sky walk, the university pond or the giant tree. Entrance to the park is 220 TWD per adult. The parking lot is very large, but the place is popular, even on weekdays, with several dozen of tourists buses.

We went here on Feb 24. This place is so beautiful. The view is so relaxing and the air is so nice to breathe. We met many elderly people and they were very friendly. We want to come back here if we have the chance.
Araranika — Google review
Peaceful nature refuge with accessible walkways The park covers an expansive area with varying elevation. Park highlights include the University Pond, a small pond with a picturesque bamboo bridge, and the Sky Walk, an elevated walkway 22.6 m / 75 ft above the forest ground. I found the Giant tree not that exciting - it’s a long dead tree and difficult to appreciate the size as it’s split into multiple sections. The walkways can be steep so I’d recommend bringing walking poles and wearing comfy shoes /athletic clothes. There are golf carts that can take you to different areas but they’re usually already pretty full. The park was exceedingly busy even on a weekday (Tuesday) full of tourists. Ticket discounts available if pre-purchased at online sites.
Kevin W — Google review
A good place to take a break from busy city life. The air is fresh and the trails are doable even for beginning hikers. If you’re a student, make sure to bring your student ID with you as there will be discount for entrance ticket. Although it’s not too close yo the center or Taichung, but it’s accessible by public bus. It would take around 2-3 hours by bus and around 1.5 hours by car. Definitely come back whenever get tired of the city life.

Nestled in the heart of Chiayi County, the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area is a breathtaking mountain resort that spans an impressive 41,500 hectares. This stunning locale is renowned for its lush alpine forests, scenic walking paths, and panoramic mountain vistas. Visitors can explore a variety of attractions including mesmerizing waterfalls and charming tea plantations while hiking through its extensive trails.
Took the scenic train from Alishan station to Zhaoping station. The park/ train was quite empty as I went on a weekday. The trail to see the sisters pond is easy with proper steps. Amazing views and the whole place feels very serene and quiet. A good place to embrace a slower pace and also be away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Also took the new trail to see shuishan giant tree. It is a one hour loop trail and was a little foggy but got to see the giant tree at the end and it was worth it!!

Incredible experience with so many beautiful trees surrounding us. I now wish we had spent 1 night in the park itself to enjoy more walks and spend more time exploring the many different trails and walks. Relatively easy for most of the trails. Love simply soaking in the fresh air and cooling temperatures. 10/10 would go again!

I’m giving it 5 stars cuz the train ride, the trees, the hiking trails were really nice, especially if you’re a nature lover. However, going there and coming back was hell. No amount of romanticizing can give back the 12 hours+ I spent sitting on trains and buses after I decided to DIY the trip from Taipei to Chiayi to Alishan and back. I woke up around 6am. I didn’t book the HSR so I had to take the “fast” train which took three hours of travel from Taipei to Chiayi. At Chiayi, i lined up for about 20 mins or more to ride the bus from Chiayi to Alishan. That bus trip on the winding roads going up the mountain took about two hours. I arrived at the gate and I rode the train for ten mins from Alishan Station going up to Shenmu Station. Then, I hiked the trails. Afterwards, I had to go down and line up to purchase a ticket from Shenmu Station back to Alishan Station. It was pouring rain that time and there were LOTS of people since it was a long holiday weekend. After reaching Alishan Station, I hurriedly went to the bus station (just a short walking distance) and lined up for the bus that would take me back to Chiayi Station down at the city center. The line was long and I was able to board the bus after about 50 mins of waiting/lining up. Then, I rode the bus back to Chiayi. It was supposedly two hours, but it felt like it was more than that. Again, I did not book the HSR so I took the “fast” train again and had to travel back to Taipei for about 4 hrs. I started my day at 6am. I arrived back at my Airbnb in Taipei around 1am. You do the math. It was hell. Suggestions for an Alishan trip: 1. Stay in Chiayi. 2. Hire a private car or book a tour. 3. If you’re from Taipei, and want to DIY, book HSR tickets and start your day real early. 4. If you’re on a trip in Taiwan and you’re pressed for time, think twice about doing a DIY trip to Chiayi. I think you can spend those precious 12 hours+ on other fun things.

Alishan has a variety of high mountain views to offer, with a very mysterious ambiance when it is foggy. The sunrise has been sublime and the weather a nice respite from the hot and humid climate in lower elevations. Definitely worth a day trip.

Magical forest enjoyed by visitors both local and foreign. Countless trails with rest stops offering ecological and historical insights. No private vehicles allowed in the park. Traffic control may seem inconvenient but it is necessary due to the volume of visitors.

Fenqihu Old Street

Historical place
Bustling street in a charming mountain town, offering shops selling trinkets, donuts & bento boxes.
Feng Qi Hu Old Street is a charming spot full of character and local flavor. If you’re here, you must try the bento—it’s a local favorite and absolutely delicious! Don’t miss out on the donuts, they’re soft, sweet, and perfect for a quick snack. Also, the tea is a must-try, adding a perfect touch to your visit. The museum in the area is a gem and really worth visiting—it offers fascinating insights into the local culture and history. Overall, a delightful stop with great food, drinks, and culture! Perfect for a relaxing day out.

Small area, but packed with good people, scenery, foods and a live museum! We came on weekday, bumped into many locals that came too so car parking is a challenge. But we love this place as you can spend some relaxing time here exploring the train station that still working, train museum with some interactive activities, and nice coffee! Love the view and peacefulness here.❤️

I was told jiufen or something was nice, but this place was better to dodge the insane crowds. Honestly, I believe that since I practically went on a national holiday but still had one of the most picturesque and amazing experience. From the train passing to the old timely vibe of the streets. It was a place to put on your schedule if you're able to visit(we came with a car).
Frankie T — Google review
It’s a walking friendly old street with many vendors who specialize in local speciality items. It’s worth a visit. Something interesting is that the area is still very agricultural base so they have a self serve stand that has chayote. And if you pay attention chayote grows everywhere. And they have different variety of chayote variety. We enjoy the Alishan coffee and also the traditional aiyu jelly and ginger candied items. Go early as large your buses show up around 1130 and noon.

After staying in Chiayi for a couple days, I got a recommendation from travel guides to visit Fenqihu. Everyone told me I should visit Alishan and I do want to see that historic natural wonder as well. However, it is not a feasible day trip from Chiayi without a car and considering the limited bus departures. For a day trip, Fenqihu is perfect. It is very walkable - although some streets are quite steep. It was much cooler than the city and the air is incredibly refreshing. I really enjoyed the cedar forest path, the wheel donuts, the boxed vegetarian lunch, and enjoying the rejuvenating flavor of Alishan High Mountain Tea (prices ranged from 300-900 NTD). I would recommend bringing very sturdy hiking shoes and a raincoat because it is quite wet weather. The shop owners are very friendly and there are a lot of special treats local to the region to try out. Beware that the last bus to Chiayi departs at 5pm. If you want more time to explore, I recommend bringing your own car or moped.

Fenqihu Old Street is a charming slice of history in the mountains—full of nostalgic wooden shops, delicious bento boxes, and local snacks like taro balls and smoked bamboo shoots. The steam train passing through adds a wonderful vintage vibe. Perfect for a relaxing stroll, tasty treats, and a taste of old-time Taiwan!
