Morro de Arica

Mentioned on

Observation deck
Sights & Landmarks
Morro de Arica is a prominent hill that offers stunning panoramic views of the city and coastline. Standing at 110 meters, it provides a perfect vantage point to witness breathtaking sunsets. The hill also houses the Museum of History and Weapon, making it a dual attraction. At its summit stands an 11-meter tall sculpture called The Christ of Peace, symbolizing peace between Peru and Chile. Visitors can enjoy not only the natural beauty but also learn about the historical significance of the region.
Probably the most known landmark of Arica, this rocky promontory fascinates you, both through consistent history found there (related with Pacific War, Chinchorro culture etc.) and the astonishing view towards the city, the harbour, ocean coast and the south beach of El Laucho. Not to be missed while in this northernmost city of Chile.
Nicolae B — Google review
Great views, beautiful sunset and good people.
Souldev — Google review
Morro de Arica is highly recommended for its panoramic views over the city, the port, and the vast ocean. The scenic overlook provides a unique vantage point that captures Arica’s urban and coastal beauty. The monumental Chilean flag atop the hill is a must-see. Measuring 18 meters wide and 26 meters long, and weighing over 80 kilograms, it’s one of the largest flags I’ve ever seen. While its size feels like a display of overly confidence and national pride, it’s impressive to watch the wind give life to this massive symbol. A great spot for photography and a memorable view.
Luz — Google review
Nice spot. Going uphill was easier than I expected.
Maryna L — Google review

We loved the views and the historical information about the battles that took place in the region. Worth a visit if you happen to be in Arica.
Tim T — Google review
Must to do, if you are in Arica, a great lookout of all the bay, and the city. Good place to see the sunset and how the city turn on the lights (I prefer the night view of the cities) also is a historical and important place for all people from Arica.

Beautiful place! Everyone is out enjoying the Christmas decorations and lovely atmosphere. This is a must see not just in Chile but in the world.
Nathan B — Google review
Nice beach but the only problem is there is a lot of people selling food and drinks.
Anis K — Google review
Beautiful sunsets. Attentive and proactive lifeguards. Many families and kids enjoying the beach. Nonintrusive vendors. Minus two stars for shards of broken glass, many cigarette butts, and garbage in the sand.
Nadine A — Google review
A beach with beautiful sea
Wiwi S — Google review
I would give it the five stars if it wasn't for the bird's poop that expell a disgusting smell. Despite that you can find places to eat, to sit, to play sports such beach tennis, beach soccer, beach volley and so on. There is a little zoo, the casino is also there and just across the street you can find some restaurants more settled. It's a swimmable beach so daily you'll see body swimmers, surfers, swimmers and such. Nice place to spend the morning or the evening. It's hot on sunny days so watch out.

Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works

Mentioned on

Historical place
Museums
The Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works is a well-preserved historic site that dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers a fascinating look into the region's history during the nitrate boom. The abandoned buildings and towns provide a glimpse of bygone eras, making it an intriguing destination for history enthusiasts.
We had a really great experience ! Guided tour through the village. Amazingly well done exhibition and reconstructions. You could easy understand, touch and imagine how people luved and worked there. I can highly recommend! Take some time to explore as the areal is quite large.
Vivian S — Google review
Ghosttown has a long history of production and has been partially restored. Great place to walk around and to see the different buildings. I'm various buildings. Different theme museums are set up about different aspects of working and living in this ghost town at the time it was operational. Interesting old sulzer engines can be seen, old steam trains in a state of disrepair and old engines manufactured in Britain.
Ewald H — Google review
Words cannot express how absolutely fantastic this place is. As a Californian with an extensive history of visiting ghost towns in the United States, this UNESCO site is by far the best ghost town I have been too. It is remarkably well preserved, it has an unbelievably extensive collection of quotidian objects. Humberstone is the better site of the two if you have extra time as it is much larger and has a lot of variety. Commit to at least 2-3 hours of walking and make sure you go to the far end of the site by where the factories are, you'll find incredible machinery, trains, and artifacts. Note: the old saloon, plaza, church, and movie theater are a must visit. If you are right on time go to Santa L., it's just up the road had a lot of what you can see at Humberstone but is a lot more compact so you can do it all in 45 min. The main museum at this site also has original and beautiful ads produced by the companies and Chilean government to popularize its nitrate abroad, these posters are remarkable pieces of advertising history and early 1900's history.
Helder T — Google review
Amazing open air museum. A lot is still intact and it is very cool to walk back into time while visiting Humberstone. You can easily spend 3/4h. There are some stores in the main square. We paid 6000 pesos, which we found more than reasonable.
Lode R — Google review
Tickets are now 6000 CLP but totally worth it! One of the most amazing and impressive places I've been to over seven months spent in South America. Expect to spend at least three hours visiting this huge site and don't be surprised if you end up spending twice the time!
Massimo N — Google review
The Humberstone and Santa Laura ghost towns are a short drive up the escarpment from Iquique. They are a good way to see how life was when this was a thriving mining community and is somewhat frozen in time. Bring water and shade as it is a hot and dry area of Chile changing quite a bit from the climate in Iquique. Wear solid shoes as the buildings are in disrepair and broken glass and nails are scattered across the ground.
Sling A — Google review
Interesting Museum Saltpeters near Iquique to Central Valley nice and warmer climate than the coastline winter.
Peter S — Google review
I thought it was gonna be a genuine ghost town. Which it is, but the fact that the exterior of every single house is branded with modern signs and plaques, and their interior renovated with most objects cleaned and arranged neatly on the walls, took away from the experience. It's basically like any other museum and thus not worth the trip. The layout of the town and the exterior of buildings is a fascinating sight tho and one to behold.

Laguna Hedionda

Lake
Nature & Parks
Bodies of Water
Scenic, 4,121 metre salt lake in a sprawling reserve known for its white & pink flamingo population.
A salt lake in the Bolivian Altiplano near to the borders with Chile. There is also a small hotel there. Sue to the high sulphur content, there is an intensive smell of rotten eggs. One more lake that you can find many flamingos The lake is situated at around 4.100 meters
George K — Google review
Just wow. This was the highlight of the lakes in the region for us. Not only is it situated in a beautiful location, with incredible views of mountains and volcanoes that surround it, but it had hundreds of flamingos! And it was possible to get very close to the flamingos, who hung by the lakeshore and were not timid - excellent to observe them and for photos! Also, despite how busy other lakes were, we seemed to have the whole place to ourselves!
Mert K — Google review
A saline lake in the Nor Lípez Province, Potosí Department in Bolivia. Various migratory species of pink and white flamingos can be found here. This lake has a high saline content of 66-80% and an average depth of just under one foot. The name Laguna Hedionda fittingly means ‘Stinking Lake’ in Spanish after the unappealing smell caused by its high sulfur content.
CK C — Google review
We had lunch overlooking the flamingos. You can walk close to the flamingos. We saw James and Andean flamingos. Bathrooms costs 5 sol.
Our F — Google review
This is a salt lake in the Bolivian Altiplano near to the borders with Chile. It lies at an altitude of approximately 4,120m and it houses important local fauna and flora. It is part of the 9 small saline lakes, and one of the four blue lakes in the area, and its name means stinking lake, due to the high sulphur content.
Andreas K — Google review
The sulfur-laden Laguna Hedionda (translating to 'stinking lake') lies above 13,500 feet on the Altiplano of the Andes, near the foot of the volcano Ollagüe. In contrast to its great elevation, Hedionda's depth is less than a foot on average, so even if you hold your nose, don't expect to do the backstroke on this backcountry water body. Time your visit right, though, and you'll see flocks of flamingos and other wallowing waterfowl.
Gopi N — Google review
One of your first stops if you are touring from San Pedro. What an amazing sight to witness. The beautiful Laguna Hedionda is opening sight once you enter Bolivia. A must see!

The wind has created beautiful sculptures here, with the Arbol Piedra (the Rock Tree) as an absolute highlight. Combine this with the empty plain where the rocks are and the snow-stained mountains and you have an unforgettable experience. Take a walk among the rocks and discover the yareta / llareta (Azorella Compacta) and the southern vizcacha (Lagidium Viscacia).

Hot Springs & Geysers
Sol de Mañana, which translates to "Morning Sun" in Spanish, is a captivating geothermal area located at an elevation of around 4,900 meters. This unique site showcases constant volcanic activity with fumaroles, geysers, and boiling hot springs. The landscape is adorned with bubbling mud pots and steamy pools emitting the distinct smell of sulfur. Visitors are advised to exercise caution due to the intense volcanic activity and strong winds that may blow steam and gas in their direction.
You can feel the earth “living” here. You can smell the sulfur by the geysers, and the smokes are warm. But you’ll need warm clothes because you won’t be able to step out of the warm smokes where everywhere else is freezing cold!!
Secret — Google review
Sol de Mañana isn’t conventionally beautiful — it’s primal, brutal, and mesmerizing. It’s one of the rare places on Earth where you feel like a witness to something ancient and alive, where the planet's power isn’t hidden — it’s on full display. As part of the Uyuni circuit, it's not a long stop, but it's an essential one. The stark contrast between the peace of the salt flats and the raw violence of the geothermal earth adds depth to the journey — and reminds you just how wildly diverse and dramatic Bolivia truly is.
Andreas N — Google review
Very intense experience of the forces of Nature. Well worth a visit. It’s a very high aktitude - and a rocky Road. But if you’re on a trip in the area it’s a must-see.
Christian B — Google review
Such a wonder of nature. Definitely worth a visit to see the geothermal steam spouts bubbling away. We loved exploring around here at sunrise despite the strong sulphur smell! There are clearly marked rock boundaries so you know where’s safe to watch from as it is volcanic activity!
Our F — Google review
If you're here early enough you can see the steam. It's super cold though so come prepared
Wouter L — Google review
Intriguing place to visit. Sol de Mañana (Spanish for Morning Sun) is a beautiful and otherwordly area lined with geysers, bubbling mud pots and the distinct smell of sulphur. Located at more than 4850 m altitude, this field of geysers is fed by an underlying volcanic activity, due to the friction of the American plate with the South Pacific plate.
CK C — Google review
The place is a geothermal area that extends over 10 sq. klm in an altitude between 4,800m to 5,000m. The volcanic activity is significant, while the sulphur springs and mud lakes steam non stop. Bolivia made a geothermal energy plant in order to sell the stored energy to Chile, but the exploitation of the site is uneconomic.
Andreas K — Google review
Feel the force(and smell) of nature! At high altitude, it does get windy around the geysers but what an incredible sight to see it. Definitely worth the experience.

Wooden walkways link 8 high-altitude pools with mineral-rich hot waters, surrounded by vegetation.
After spending some time at the geysers we then went to the hot Springs where, despite the cold we enjoyed warming up and we understood why many people would want to go there. Their surrounds are amazing and it was a great experience. Highly recommended especially the part where we enjoyed our Guide’s hospitality with hot chocolate drinks.

7 pools with different temperatures, clearest water I've seen, beautiful setting. OK changing rooms. Beware of you go for the morning slot to be ready to be rushed out at 1pm.
Clara-Isabel D — Google review
Lovely spot, we had a rental car and the drive was a breeze - no 4WD required! Spend approximately 3 hours in the water and then made the trek back up to the car park. Being plenty of food and water, at this altitude you’ll need it before heading back!
Zakk B — Google review
Ancient houses and animal’s domestication corrals, thousand-year old cactus, and the most important the hot springs that you can delight for free, several pools, not crowded. The trail is about 25min to get to the largest pools and moderate difficulty. Solo big steps to go up and down will required to use your hands.
Bruce — Google review
I loved this place! It's great fun to swim in such warm, clear pools and splash under the little waterfalls. The changing facilities are ok, and not too intrusive on the overall natural look of the place. The only downside is that I relied on a tour company to get me there, and they only picked me up at 2pm - so by the time we arrived we'd lost an hour of the 3 hours you can spend here.

A bit of a must-see! Take a robe, towel and sandals - it's cold stepping out of the hot water. I believe the further downstream you go the cooler the water. Was not too hot

A nice, natural place for thermal bath. equipped with changing rooms (lockers without lock) and wash rooms. Recommend to buy tickets in advance online but tickets can also be bought at reception with cash, 30000 clp per person. Connected road is poorly maintained, like most of the roads in San Pedro.

Valley of the Moon

Mentioned on

Valley of the Moon, located near Antofagasta, offers a lunar-like desert landscape with pink-streaked mountains and unique rock formations. Visitors can explore this famous valley and witness breathtaking sunsets. The city of Antofagasta serves as a gateway to these natural wonders and has a rich history tied to the 19th-century nitrate boom.
Valley of the Moon is absolutely stunning and a must-visit if you’re in the area. The landscapes are otherworldly, with incredible rock formations and breathtaking views, especially at sunset. It’s an unforgettable experience. One small point — the speed limit throughout the park is set at just 20kph, which felt unnecessarily slow at times. But it’s a minor inconvenience compared to the beauty of the place. Highly recommend!

Roxana was an incredible tour guide. She was extremely knowledgeable about La Paz, being a native and about the rock formations and legend behind the creations of these formations. She guided us slowly and talked to us about Neil Armstrong and the moon ways of the land, how protected it is and what it's made of. Roxana was an amazing photographer as well. I really enjoyed my time doing this tour.
Essence P — Google review
The valley is a very big and impressive site. The landscape is vast, dry, and full of unusual rock formations and colours. It really does feel like you are on another planet. We joined a tour, which was good but a bit limited. We only stopped at two places inside the valley itself before heading off to the main viewpoint for sunset. The views at sunset were fantastic, wide open skies, golden light over the mountains. It was definitely the highlight of the tour. If you are happy to drive yourself, there is a lot more to explore on your own. You can stop where you like, take your time, and see more of the smaller sights within the area. The site is large, and there are walking tracks and lookouts spread around. Overall, it is well worth a visit, whether on a tour or self-drive. The scenery is unique and very different. Just be aware that tours tend to move quickly, so if you prefer to explore at your own pace, driving yourself may be the better choice.

This is the best natural reserve/park I have ever been to. It is taken care of to an incredible level. At the start you get a personal explanation of the park and there are multiple small hikes that are all worth doing. In total we walked for about 2h and drove around as well. If possible I would recommend doing it in a rental car or by bike, since you can enjoy the place at your own pace and see everything you want. Definitely a must see in this region.

Valley of the Moon (Valle de la Luna) in Chile is an absolutely stunning and unforgettable destination! Located just outside San Pedro de Atacama, this place truly lives up to its name—the landscapes are so surreal and dramatic that you feel like you’ve landed on another planet. The salt flats, jagged rock formations, and massive sand dunes create a breathtaking backdrop that is perfect for photography and exploring. I visited during sunset, and the colors were just incredible—the sky turned shades of pink, orange, and purple, and the whole valley seemed to glow. The views from the top of the sand dunes and the Kari Viewpoint are spectacular, offering panoramic vistas over the Atacama Desert and the distant Andes mountains. Walking the trails through the valley, I was amazed by the unique rock formations like the Amphitheater and Las Tres Marías, as well as the salt caves and canyons. The site is well-organized, with clear trails and friendly staff who help protect the fragile environment. There are basic facilities at the entrance, but I recommend bringing plenty of water, sun protection, and a camera to capture the ever-changing light and scenery. It’s easy to visit on your own by car or bike, but I joined a guided tour and learned a lot about the geology and history of the area. If you’re in San Pedro de Atacama, you absolutely can’t miss Valley of the Moon. It’s one of the most unique and beautiful places I’ve ever seen, and the sunset experience is truly magical. Highly recommended for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone looking for an adventure in Chile!

We self drove The Valley of the Moon and bought tickets online in advance the morning of our visit, it’s very close to San Pedro. This place really is like another planet, a landscape unlike any other. We were blown away by its beauty.

Breathtaking views of mountains, valleys, geological formations (calcium and salt layers compressed by millions of years).

Awesome Place to explore by bycicle and on foot for yourself, but there are some things to consider: First, the entrance fee is 10.800 pesos per person (Nov '25) and you can only pay by card at the entrance station. Second, the last possible entry time is 11am, afterwards they close for private riders and i think guests without a tour in general. And third, the last possible exit time is 3pm. By that time you need to be back at the entrance station. Your ticket is also valid for a sunset point later though. I actually did it that way, because i was only informed about that last minute. It was doable, and a great experience for me, but i did it fast and it was not too hot on that day. I think, for most people, one or two hours more/earlier would be better. 😉 Oh, and bring water, you won't regret it. 😋

Rocky mountain plateau with an overhanging rock, a popular photo spot at sunset.
This is the best sunset of San Pedro de Atacama! You will find it crowded if you arrive less than 45 minutes to the sunset. Beautiful view of the Valle de la Luna. It really worths the stop. Difficult to parking at the sunset, so arrive early. The view of Licancabur Volcano is also amazing

There are near the valle de Luna, we saw the sunset there, it was very beautiful although the we missed the sunset, the red light reflected on the mountain behind was still spectacular 😀

Wonderful and otherworldly view on the sunset and the Moon Valley! Only downside - very crowded. But, it is expected, since the spot is located just 10 minutes from the city.

More than 20 buses with more than 250 people makes it annoying. No clouds makes it not nice. Just ordinary. The Coyote Rock is closed.

It's a sensacional place to see. You will admire one of the most beautiful sunsets you can probably see. I was amazed by it, and really recommend to those who are in San Pedro de Atacama. Great place to take some pictures and to relax thinking about nature and life.

The magnificent seventy of the Moon Valley. It’s an unexpected view for you such like the other planet. The wind is something very strong, so please be careful for taking care of your cap or hat. If you go to Moon Volley with the tour from San Pedro de Atacama, you may visit here.

Very scenic especially in the golden early/late afternoon hours. the park has 2 separate entrances, at Valle de la Luna and one mirador de Kari/ piedra de Coyote by highway 23. The afternoon brings the beauty from the cliffside overlooks. Fyi you can buy affordable admission through PuntoTicket.com but make sure you receive the qr code for entry. I didn't get mine in my email and my account. I had help from the hostel I stayed in to get the qr code.

Hotel Geyser Del Tatio offers comfortable accommodation with a focus on cleanliness and attentive staff. The hotel's simple yet pleasant amenities make it a good choice for travelers looking for a place to rest without breaking the bank. Guests appreciate the tranquil atmosphere, well-kept pool, and friendly service. The location, though somewhat remote, provides an opportunity to enjoy the starry sky and serene desert surroundings.
Great hostel : nice rooms, breakfast at the top and people very kind! She helped us with the transportation to the airport and what are the best visiting spots un the area

Worst experience in the region! No water or hot shower at the end of a trekking day is awful! The owner is completely absent, they have a huge problem with hot water in the showers and we had a complete day without water at all. They should rebuilt their basic infrastructure urgently! We made a complaint to the owner but got no answer so far.

(Translated by Google) It should be noted that the cleanliness of both the room and the facilities, everything is pristine. The staff is very attentive, kind, friendly and helps you with your questions. The hotel is simple, not pretentious or luxurious. If your plan is to take walks and visits, where you are only looking for a place to sleep and rest without spending a lot of money but with a higher level than a hostel, this hotel is a good choice. The hotel does not have many services (there is no bar, restaurant, laundry, room service, etc.); The pool and patio are very enjoyable and it is a 5-minute walk from the center of San Pedro. (Translated by Google) Hotel with a good name and logo, fairly new and a good pool. The best thing is the friendliness of the staff, but the bedrooms do not have acoustic insulation, the bathroom without ventilation and has a permanent latrine smell, the bed, the shower and the sink designed for people over 1 meter 90!, without a minibar. I didn't like the price-quality ratio, for half the price I stayed in a hotel in Calama with everything much better, except the surroundings of course, but the difference is too much. The breakfast on the 1st day was disastrous, they did not have enough service, neither plates nor tables, the china and service of low quality, the food less, without options of light yogurt, low quality cheese and ham, etc. In short, it needs to be improved because it is well located, close enough and far enough from the center of town.

Superb experience. Impossible to sink. Float w hands and feet high out of the water. Vertically float at armpit level. Surrounded by salt flats for many 1000 square kilometers. Infrastructure: personnel, showers, lockers all top rate.

Loved this place. We went with a guide so we had only 20 minutes to get inside the lagoon, so if you want to enjoy it more I definitely recommend going solo, without a guide. It’s not far from the city at all. The water is cold but I personally didn’t find it freezing like people told me it was. It’s so nice to just be floating there. Bring your towels with your if you’re planning to get in, they have a place where you can shower (no soap or anything, just water) you have a limit time in the shower as well, but it’s time enough to get the salt out of your skin. I recommend to slick your hair back or else it will be like a stone lol.
Vanessa M — Google review
A short drive from San Pedro, Laguna Cejar is a beautiful place. You need to book a ticket on the website in advance. You have a one hour slot. The Laguna is being carefully cared for and preserved by the indigenous people in the area; and the limited time means less impact on the beautiful environment. There are three lagoons, we walked around the first one and then floated in the second one. We didn’t make it to the third as we wanted to spend as much time in the water as possible. We were there in August for the 11am slot and it was chilly. Mornings are for independent travelers and afternoons for guided tours. There are changing areas and showers you can use afterwards, there is a 20 second limit for the shower due to water scarcity. We went back to our Airbnb to shower which seemed easier. You cannot wear sunscreen in the Laguna due to the environmental impact, this conflicts with information on their website when translated to English. This was a beautiful and calming experience, floating in the arid landscape of Atacama. Please don’t be put off by other reviewers. Local people are doing all they can to share the Laguna whilst limiting human impact. It’s a must see in Atacama.
Michelle E — Google review
The lake has been closed for human activities for a couple of years because it was degrading the environment. Now it is home of flamingos that can be watched from the border of the lake. Next to this lake there’s another one that still is open to swimming for max of 20min due to skin damage beyond this exposure. It’s really great to float on that salty lake.
Bruce — Google review
This was my second time here after my first visit 6 years ago. It was annoying to get in as cars were filed in a long line, even people who had reservations. But the laguna was just as nice as I remembered. As someone who isn’t a strong swimmer, it was fun to float around
Sana N — Google review
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. We were able to stay part an hour and walked all over the park. We saw flamingos in the lagoons, very cool. There weren’t a lot of people and we were not rushed. Great experience.

This was my favorite place when I first visited Atacama. Coming here again was wonderful. You absolutely must do the complete walk, although I recommend not in the afternoon when the sun is the strongest and it’s too hot to enjoy. Thankfully we had hats. It is a beautiful place

One of the prettiest places I’ve visited here. Since it wasn’t too windy it made a reflection of the mountains, looking like a mirror. Loved it!!! Such a quiet and chill place too, it wasn’t crowded at all when I went.

Magical! That’s one of the best places I have seen in my life. The road is a bit tricky but still easy to drive. It’s empty because it’s a bit more remote than the more popular lakes. Go there and enjoy the quiet, the solitude, and the views!
Erik W — Google review
Breathtaking sunsets a highlight at Tebinquinche Lake. The complete tour, including Laguna Cejar and Tebinquinche Lake took from 4 to 8 pm. Sunset at Tebinquinche Lake was certainly one of the most spectacular sights during our stay at San Pedro de Atacama. Plenty of opportunity to explore the salt flats here and take photos. There is SO MUCH salt! Lots of bird life here; the setting sun seemed to bring them out, and they swooped around the sky. Breathtaking. The lake itself had some flamingos on it. The ruggedness and extreme colours were beautiful, As the sun set, the colour on the mountains was constantly changing. All this was enhanced with snacks provided on the tour and 'pisco sours'. Excellent part of another great tour here. Highly recommended.
Chiangmaicharlies — Google review
Probably the most beautiful place in the Atacama desert, and it's not as famous as other places there. Plan to see the sunset there, as it is really beautiful. The guided tours give some 20 minutes to see the place, but I would have liked to walk the whole place, which would have taken longer. Go by yourself in a rented car, if possible, to take as much time as you want.
Daniel G — Google review
Very calm meditative place. Except for us, there was almost no one, even the flamingos did not fly 😁 On the way to the lagoon, you can see two lakes absolutely free - Ojos del solar, they are fascinating. Entrance to the Tebinquiche lagoon is 2000 pesos per person. From San Pedro de Atacama you should to drive about 40 minutes, it is better to choose an asphalt road
Kay M — Google review
Beautiful lake close to Salar De Atacama. Many kinds of birds here and you'll be lucky to see flamingos. Definitely worth the visit!
Nas S — Google review
A beautiful and peaceful lagoon. It is possible to cycle here from San Pedro but it is quite tiring. It took me just under 2 hours to cycle here and maybe 2 hours 10 to get back to San Pedro. Entrance is 2000CHP and renting a bike for 6 hours is 3000CHP making it a far more budget friendly option if you are up for the ride compared to renting a car which is likely to cost around 45000CHP. Be warned that if you do cycle, some of the road is not the best and will ware you out.

Salar de Atacama

(Translated by Google) A very peculiar area, with unique salt formations that are present in the Atacama Desert. It is incredible how nature is a warrior, as the place contains a lot of fauna and flora that are suitable for a very hostile environment. The landscape stretches to the horizon, allowing you to contemplate the mountains in the distance, but also a very extensive salt flat. Alexandre S — Google review
There is nothing to be seen here. The salt crystal is more like a mixture of salt and dirt, not as impressive as the ones in Uyuni Bolivia or Bonneville in Salt Lake City USA. Some pictures posted by other reviewers actually belong to Laguna Chaxa, a park 10 km away.

(Translated by Google) Very, very hot. It seems obvious, but since I went in the summer, I could feel the salt in the air and in my breath. In the summer, there is almost no water, so there is no mirror effect on the salt. But it is surreal and beautiful. You can walk around it, and there are several stops for photos. That's all: prepare yourself with plenty of water and sun protection. Don't be fooled by the wind, it will burn your skin. (Original) Muito, muito quente. Lascar

Volcano
Nature & Parks
The region's most active volcano stands at 18,346 ft., with 2 cones & 6 summit craters.
Absolutely incredible experience. The drive from San Pedro to the base of the climb was roughly 1hr 45min. With a stop at the entrance of the park. The drive up was during the sunrise and combined with the landscape, made it a surreal and beautiful experience. The climb took us about 2.5hrs, but the first 30min was the hardest. Once we got acclimated and into the rhythm, the climb wasn’t so bad. If you follow the motto “slow and steady wins the race” you should be fine. We had also been in San Pedro for 3 days (the climb was our 4th day) so we were pretty acclimated. The views were spectacular. It was like being on another planet. Let the photos speak for themselves.
Paul O — Google review
The climb is non-technical and usually takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes to 2 hours and 45 minutes for an average person, even without prior climbing experience. The views are stunning all the way to the top, making it a rewarding experience. I highly recommend using hiking poles, as much of the trail consists of loose volcanic gravel, which can make you sink or slide. This was my first time climbing to such an altitude, and I had no issues, though I took medication beforehand as a precaution. If you’re in San Pedro de Atacama and have the courage, this is an excellent adventure to try!
Naveen P — Google review
Information for people wanting to do this solo/non-guided. The fee to enter the park is $10000 per person, which is paid at the checkpoint in Talabre upon arrival. You will need to arrive at the checkpoint in Talabre before 8.30am if you want to climb Lascar, as it’s ‘protocol’ to refuse anyone after this point. We turned up at 9.20am the day before and they said we wouldn’t get back in time (you need to be back at the checkpoint before 4pm), although it is definitely doable if you are a fast walker! (Not sure if you could just lie and say you’re only going to the Laguna and they’d let you through?) From Talabre, you drive 30 minutes east (road is tarmacced for half the way, rutted gravel the rest) until a building on the left in front of Laguna Lejia (easy to spot, this is only the second building you will see I think). Here is a 30 minute-ish off road journey to the trailhead. DO I NEED A 4x4? Probably, though I think might be doable without one, depending on the conditions and the car but would be a bit sketchy and you’d have to go very slow. The first 20 minutes or so would be SUPER bumpy but probably fine. The last 10 minutes has some sections of deeper sand, but if you build up the speed on the good bits you might be able to coast through the deeper bits. You wouldn’t however be able to park at the top where the tour companies park. We hired a 4x4 (Nissan X Trail, 2.5L)and still weren’t able to get up there! Very steep, uneven and deep sand in places. You could park ~800m or so further down the hill though easily, which is what we did. The walk itself was short but great views at the top. You can no longer climb to the summit, which you’re told at the checkpoint. It wasn’t clear which summit they meant as there’s one to the east and west of the path. Turns out they meant both of them and you need to stay immediately around the crater. But don’t worry you don’t actually lose out as I don’t think the view is any better from up there. Lots of reviews talking about the difficulty, we’re fairly fit walkers and it took us around 2hrs up 30 minutes down. If you’ve acclimatised before think you’ll be fine. Lots of ostriches, vicuñas and flamingos in the Laguna nearby which is well worth going to the viewpoint to the south of it! Amazing colour. Photos and videos show: 1. The view down from the Volcano showing the road you drive on to get there. Also showing where the powerful cars were able to park (centre) and where we parked (white car 1km or so down the road. 2. Video showing the start of the steep bit (deep and uneven sand track just out of sight, we gave it three attempts with no luck) 3. Video showing the majority of the off road section and how rutted it was.
Adam W — Google review
Amazing! Mind blowing views. Not too difficult hike (for intermediate/experienced hikers) but you will feel the effects of altitude. It’s smart to acclimatize before you go up and perhaps take some ibuprofen with you.

G. J — Google review
(Translated by Google) ATTENTION, THIS IS NOT A TOURIST TOUR! Agencies sell it as a tour, it's not! You need to be in very good physical and mental shape to be able to climb. Choose your "mountaineers" carefully; they get pissed off when they realize the group isn't prepared. Ask how many climbers are accompanying you (you need at least two depending on the group size), how many stops are made along the way (I recommend at least three), and if they let you take photos on the way up and down (I couldn't, and the view is much more beautiful on the way up; you can't see anything at the top). Ask about what types of food they give you before and during the climb. I couldn't eat anything they gave me (only carbohydrates/pure sugar, only sweets at 5 a.m.), and they even advise you not to eat protein the night before. It was the biggest ordeal of my life, but I made it. At the top, it's a disappointment; the view isn't great. Lots of smoke, you can barely see anything, very windy, and the smell of sulfur. You don't even get 30 minutes to rest, and you literally have to run down, and it's every man for himself. You don't descend in a single line, and you literally have to slide down. The trail is super steep and unstable (sand, rock). If you have any physical limitations, don't go. Don't even go if you have a cold. MANY people can't climb, and you know what happens? The climbers drop you off on the way, and on the way back, you can try to return with the group (the route there isn't the same as the return route) OR they tell you to return to the car alone if you want. I saw this happen there, and it was also the advice I received. I repeat, choose very carefully which professionals you climb with. I can tell you right now that the cheapest ones aren't good. Unfortunately, I don't remember the names of the climbers or their company. But it was a bad mood from start to finish. The car smelled of exhaust at 4 a.m., and I was forced to listen to weird music while the guide sang the entire way. Bring Gatorade, sunscreen, and a small amount of sunscreen. Wear sunglasses. If you have gloves, I recommend them. I burned my hands (sores) from the sun. Try to carry only a bottle in your backpack; the lighter the better. For women: there are almost no rocks big enough for you to relieve yourself, both at the base of the volcano and at the top. Bring hand sanitizer and wet wipes.

(Translated by Google) Incredible hike with beautiful views during the climb and the possibility of standing on the edge of the crater at the end of the climb, a unique experience. But don't be fooled by the distance: it's only 3km uphill, but at over 5000m altitude every meter makes a difference. That's 600m of elevation gain, and that's quite a lot at this altitude. Agencies sell the tour as medium difficulty, but IT IS NOT. My husband and I are experienced trekkers and have done high-altitude hikes before, and every hike in this environment is difficult. Acclimatizing in other places in San Pedro, such as the geysers and high-altitude lagoons, will help prevent altitude sickness, such as headaches, nausea, and dizziness, but it won't improve the shortness of breath, which is the biggest problem with this type of trekking. There is much less oxygen at this altitude, and what we feel is a lot of tiredness and shortness of breath. You walk much slower than normal. It took us about 3h30 to reach the crater. If you've done other high-altitude hikes and know how your body reacts to that condition, you can go without a guide (we went alone), as the trail is very well-marked and there's no way to get lost. If you've never hiked at altitude or have no trekking experience, then having a guide is essential, as they can help with extra oxygen if needed. In any case, I suggest doing the climb to Cerro Toco beforehand, which is a shorter and less steep hike, to see if your body adapts well to the altitude.

Amazing place, just Amazing. Don't forget to buy tickets in advance and do check-in according to info on their website. SUV is recommended but we have seen some regular cars. Do not expect a lot of walking and hiking, but views are stunning, and you will probably see lamas, flamingos and other birds.

One of the most spectacular views I the world. When the lake came into view it took my breath away... saying that, note this lake is at 4,200m altitude so make sure you are acclimatised a bit before visiting this lake.
Tony F — Google review
Buy your tickets in advance online and then present your QR code to the desk in Socaire before you go to the lakes. This is a required step—they will not let you enter if you have not done this. And, you really don’t want to miss these lakes. They are truly beautiful and there’s lots of bird and llama activity. It’s so serene and quiet—what a nice place to chill out. The staff is friendly and there are bathrooms at two locations which are really clean.

The best place I’ve never been! So valuable trip! Though we all have to wake up early, but definitely worth checking out. *reminder: better to register day tour with agency , I don’t think it’s a good idea to come here by yourself

Beautiful lagunas with some wild life l! Still very high in altitude! I bought a combo ticket of both lagunas and piedra Rojas! The road access is pretty good but it is gravel and it is uphill! Quiet cold and wind during our visit!

We visited this place in late September on a sunny day. This is amazing, breathtaking and well worth it! We saw vicunas and some of the wild birds. Purchase entrance tickets online in advance. Pick up the paper tickets at the office in Solcaire (30 mins away from the laguna). Unpaved roads and some parts especially the end to the lagoon are very sandy. careful of high altitude sickness.

It’s a so beautiful, again beautiful lake. The scenery is so spectacular, and vivid blue of the lake and the sky. The altitude is more than 4,000m. So, please be careful for your body situation. It’s better to go by the tour from San Pedro de Atacama. It was one of the best place in my life.
Papipupenta — Google review
The place is 5/5 beautiful. But the ticket booking system is such a disappointment that makes it 3/5. You’ll need a lot of patience and sacrifice your privacy to successfully book the tickets. There are a lot of forms with a lot of repetitive questions to fill. They require visitors to arrive one hour in advance but it’s not necessary.

Absolutely beautiful and unique landscape! It was much colder than we expected and the tour company didn’t do a good job of letting us know how to dress. The piedras Rojas are above 4000m and it was very windy so I would absolutely recommend a thicker jacket or a sweater and windbreaker. Long pants are also a must. Overall, if you are dressed correctly, it’s an incredible landscape.

It's nice... but it is unnecessary to pay the entry fee to enjoy the lake. First of all, you have to pick a time that you will show up at. Then, pay with a credit card beforehand. Then, you have to check in at a location on the way from San Pedro. You aren't allowed to go anywhere but a narrow path. Also, we were harassed and followed by an employee who pretended to be fixing rocks that make up the narrow path. You can check it out from the viewpoints on the west side and the east side of the lake. Save you money and time, and check out the viewpoints. It's much quicker that way.
Joseph C — Google review
The scenery is stunning but it’s too regulated, if you’re driving then it’s worth seeing the lakes on the way to the Argentinian border control, those can be roamed freely with no restrictions. We were too far from the lake shore as they’d blocked a lot off to wander. Buy tickets in advance.
Roshum K — Google review
An unique place under the Sun, when earth is meeting the sky for a symphony of colours. Stunning and incredible perspectives up to the horizon, as well as many panoramic views from Atacama desert. And everything on a high altitude, be prepared for 4k meters and more. Is worthing all the effort to be here!
Flavius — Google review
A little complicated to buy the tickets, but the day went smoothly. Path to the salt flat is about a km each way, rocky, not suitable for folks with mobility challenges. Very specific areas where you can and can’t go. Plenty of photo opportunities. The day we went was WINDY. Don’t know if that’s the norm, but be prepared. Amazing landscape.

Beautiful place even though it is quite far. Good roads however watch out for potholes. Ticket to reserve in advance online and do not forget to check in at Scolaire or you will get sent back. Quebrada de Humahuaca is a narrow desert valley in Argentina, known for its stunning multi-hued rock formations and indigenous Quechuan villages. Visitors can experience the celebrated Carnival of the Quebrada de Humahuaca and explore the Warmi llama and lambswool textile factory in Palpala. The area includes the famous "Rainbow Mountain" called Hornocal.
Quebrada de Humahuaca is the entire area where Hornocal is the name of the actual "Rainbow Mountain" in Quebrada de Humahuaca. My wife and I stayed in Tilcara which is an AMAZING small town with literally the best food we had after staying for 3 months in Argentina! We preferred the town of Tilcara over Humahuaca personally. Better housing options as well. The people are super nice. Culturally it seems more similar to Bolivia which you are not too far from the border. It's a fairly easy drive from the Salta Airport to Tilcara or even just all the way to Hornocal or Humahuaca. This was one of our favorite times in all of Argentina. It's much larger in person than we thought and the colors are fairly vibrant. Keep in mind the elevation is higher than Machu Picchu so drink some local coca tea and bring chocolate before you go! Ali (my wife) almost fainted so that's the one down side. There's literally an ambulance waiting at the top because heart problems are so frequent. Also, people will tell you that you need to rent a tour from Humahuaca but that's a lie - you can DEFINITELY drive yourself. The roads are gravel from Humahuaca to Hornocal but absolutely doable even in a sedan like we had. Just drive a bit slow and you'll get there in 40 min - 1 hour. Between the food, local arts & crafts, views, and overall vibe this is a 10/10 experience in Argentina and HIGHLY recommend! Full video review @Hobarts Abroad YouTube and TikTok

This is one of the most beautiful natural sceneries in the world. The drive to Hornocal is a bit long and uncomfortable (unpaved road for 20km) but the view of the "cierro de los 14 colores" is all worth it (picture attached). Absolutely stunning, a must see if you are in the area.

Pucará de Tilcara is a significant pre-Inca archaeological site located in the southern outskirts of Tilcara. It was originally built by the Omaguaca tribe in the 12th century and later declared a National Monument in 2000. The hilltop town offers well-preserved ruins, including ancient dwellings and a town square, providing insight into how this indigenous tribe lived.
Gorgeous desert landscape in a cool archeological site. There is an optional informative tour and when I overheard the guide, he seemed very knowledgeable.

Nice small town. You can find knick-knacks in the main square. There is a public restroom that you have to pay to access. Pretty common practice in that area Then we visited the botanical garden which it’s a must.

Sept.25: we went late afternoon by car, the road is very bumpy, but could do it by regular car. The tour was already closed, so we looked around by ourselves & went up the Mirador Cerro de la Cruz (viewpoint). It's a steep walk up, but rewarding views from top! There was a sign that you could call to visit the Cueva del Wayra caves (for next day), but no response either...

Amazing place, so steeped in history. I loved the explanations on the signs and the brochure, which helped to explain the effects of the outsiders on the settlement: First the Incas, then the Spanish, and finally the incompetent archeologists of the 1930s. I wandered up and down for two hours, really super interesting.

The Hill of Seven Colors, also known as Cerro de los Siete Colores, is a stunning natural wonder in Argentina. This jagged rock formation boasts a mesmerizing display of pastel hues including lavenders, oranges, and yellows. While it may be challenging to spot all seven colors at once, the morning sun illuminates the rocky surface with a breathtaking spectrum of colors.
The Seven Colors Hill is a true gem in Purmamarca. At sunset and especially sunrise, the colours are popping and it's a perfect time to get some pictures. Walking around the central square, there's plenty of locals selling false alpaca clothing all made in Bolivia. There, you have a great view over the hill and don't really need to pay for a better observation site.

Petra ( — Google review
Both a great tourist attraction and a fully functioning Catholic church (mass is celebrated daily), this is the main cathedral in the city of Salta. Not old, for European standards, it was built in the mid 1800s, it still boasts a richly decorated interior full of altars and religious art (paintings, statues and a wonderfully fresco painted ceiling). The cloister next door is small and not breathtaking, but still worth to see when visiting the cathedral.

The Museum of High Altitude Archaeology (MAAM) is located in a 19th-century building and showcases artifacts from the Inca culture found in the Andes Mountains. One of its most famous exhibits is the Mummies of Llullaillaco, which were discovered at a high altitude near the peak of Llullaillaco. This significant archaeological find dates back over 500 years and provides insight into Inca rituals and practices.
Absolutely fascinating museum documenting the discovery of three incredibly well-preserved Incan children who were buried as part of a ritual. The museum is fairly small, but covers a lot of information on the archeological team who uncovered them as well as the Incas and the rituals performed. There is only one body on display at a time for preservation sakes, but there is also another Incan mummy on display too in a separate exhibition. Cost for foreigners to enter was 12,000 pesos, less for Argentinan nationals and even less for locals. Well worth a visit.
MT M — Google review
Fascinating museum. We arrived at 11:10 and waited approx 15 minutes to enter the museum, buying tickets on the door. Really insightful if you have limited prior knowledge of Inca history and culture. An incredible opportunity to see The Lightning Girl mummy, very harrowing. Limited English translations so we missed understanding some of the exhibits, but to be expected in an Argentinian museum. The museum is quite small and can easily be visited within 1.5h. I’d love a larger collection and more stories, but overall a worthwhile visit.
Laura B — Google review
Great little museum. I was there for about an hr. There are some pretty interesting and intricate artifacts, but the highlight is definitely seeing the mummy and reading about the sacrifice. There are three mummies of which 1 is on display for 8 months at a time. You can see pictures/videos of the others however. There is also a 2nd mummy that was found in the 1920s (and lost on the black market until recently) that is also on display and looks like it’s from a horror movie. Great museum and a bit creepy. Especially with the eerie music playing.
Mark Z — Google review
Relatively interesting but small museum. I completely understand that tourists pay the double price compared to nationals and four time the entrance fee for people from Salta… however, since most of the explanation is in Spanish and there is only few elements translated in English… the price is not fair. You could, at least provide a paper with the translation in English
Heyfa A — Google review
Very interesting museum and a must do in Salta. The exhibition is translated into English (or at least the main exhibition is). I would recommend to anyone visiting the area. You can tell great care was taken in explaining everything as best as possible and showing things with respect. The price for a foreigner was $13,000 in July 2025. For a national it was $6,000 and for an Argentinian student it was $2,000. You pay for the tickets at the entrance. When we arrived they told us we had to wait 20 mins until the next group were allowed, even though we didn’t go around as a group, I guess this is to steady the flow.
Ella — Google review
Great museum. You learn a lot about the incas and their relation with the mountains. It took us about 1h to go through every and we found it perfect. I really recommend it during your stay in Salta.

Many interesting artifacts including the bodies / mummies of three inca children preserved by frozen temperatures. May be jarring to some and frightening to children, which one should assume at the mention of a mummy. Very interesting dark and quiet exhibit room, 5 stars for that on its own, but overall left me wanting a little more by the end.

Thinking that this drive would be slightly less incredible compared to my previous days drives through the Salinas and El Hornocal, I couldn't have been more wrong. You start in Yungas and make your way ever higher to a marvelous red rock canyon which contrasts dramatically with the lush green vegetation. Eventually the road became dirt and climbed into the clouds only to emerge on a desert altiplano which descends to the famous Recta del Tin Tin, a road said to be in use since the Incas. Spectacular.

If you're planning a visit to Salta, make sure to include the Teleférico San Bernardo in your itinerary. This charming cable car takes you on an exhilarating ride up to a hill that offers stunning panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. Tickets can be conveniently purchased at the base for around 2200 pesos for a round trip, with minimal wait times typically under ten minutes. As you ascend, you'll be treated to beautiful sights of palm trees and gardens, making the journey itself quite enjoyable.
Splendid view of the city. Just buy the way up as you can easily walk down through the forrest path on your way down.

At $15000 / person this is an absolute rip off. We wanted to buy tickets at the kiosk but were told by the security guard to wait outside. We waited about 20 minutes before being allowed to buy a ticket. The ride itself is OK, but should be about half the price. Once you are at the top there is little there apart from overpriced retail concessions and toilets. The view is fine but there is no information or any walking routes once you are up there. Save money and get a taxi up, or take the 55 minute walk if you have the stamina.

Very nice ride up the gondola, $6.25 USD per person at current market rate. Beautiful palm trees and walks, garden and view at the top. Also the option to walk up or down but it is pretty long. Water feature wasn't working which is too bad. There is a generic touristy restaurant and a highly rated resuarant but it's closed Monday and tuesday

When visiting Salta this one should be on your list , One gets a good panoramic view of the city and the surrounding area, The travel up and down the hill is quite fun, A small coffee shop to enjoy a drink and take in the view before the short return trip , The cost is 2200 pesos per person

I think the attendant should get more involved in moving the crowd into the cars. There was a fairly long line and some folks were going up only two at a time, when the cars could carry at least four individuals. It made things unnecessarily slow.

Teleférico San Bernardo is the station for the aerial tramway to the top of the hill. You can get the talk just walk-in, price is S.500 for a return trip, and usually there is queue for the ticket, but usually only took less than 10 mins. As each of the car is for 4 person, staffs may put you with other people together if you only have 2. However, if the queue is short, you may request to have a private car, staffs are friendly and usually ok to do so. After 10 mins will take you to the top of the hill, and the view is very nice in between

If you have time and it's a nice sunny day it's worth going up. It's not a must do in the city, but it is nice.

San Bernardo's Hill, also known as Cerro San Bernardo, is a popular spot in Salta for outdoor activities and relaxation. It offers stunning panoramic views of the city from its summit, which can be reached by climbing over 1,000 steps or taking a cable car from Parque San Martin. At the top, visitors can enjoy a restaurant with gourmet dining options and explore beautiful gardens.
Beautiful place. Short trip but the views worth it. I recommend taking a cable car with large windows as it’s super hot there. Specially in a sunny day

Decent view from top. Some artificial waterfalls with dirty stinking water. Cable car is way overpriced. Either walk up or use your money for something else.

We were told that people come here in the evening to see the sunset. To be honest, it is not as exciting as watching the sunset on the ocean beach. The mountains change the way it goes. But it is a good exercise, 1070 steps going up, not very hard. If you are not fit for it, you can use taxi or the cable car. There are couple of restaurants with a good view over the city, which is very white.

Save yourself $20 and either walk up "Entrada Escalinata Peatonal Cerro San Bernardo" or take a taxi. The hike has plenty of resting benches. It's a beautiful view of the city

Beautiful hill side that over looks the city of Salta. Worth the visit on a clear day. Several places to purchase beverages and food. Recommend bring a picnic basket. Access to the hill is via the aerial tram or car.

It's quite an interesting place to visit with some great views over the city. The cable car costs between 15-20,000 pesos, but it can be walked for free. The walk is fairly easy, just a series of stone steps but taking water is advisable. It's about a 45 minute walk to reach the top. There are vendors selling drinks and snacks at the start and up at the top, along with a cafe and some stalls selling souvenirs, local wines and beers etc. There are also a couple of basic calisthenic gyms and a playground. Toilets are also available free of charge. A good way to spend an afternoon in Salta!

You can get there by hiking for around 1 hour if the teleferico doesn’t go. It’s a nice but steep walk. Beautiful view over salta.

This is a very nice view of the city. They have a really cute park and some artisan merchandise We didn't visit the restaurant up there but it looked like it had a nice view of the city. We took the teleférico up and back and it was a really nice and relaxed ride that revealed more of the city as we were going up.
