HUGE variety of orchids maintained and bred on this immaculate property. This was an excellent stop on our way from Cuenca. The tour lasted about one hour and was led by an orchids expert! I highly recommend this tour.
Bryon S — Google review
The orchids are beautiful and amazing. The tour was great and informative. I loved it!🥰
Wanda M — Google review
A beautiful place to visit. Thousands of orchids to see and buy. Tour the facilities and take in all the natural beauty nature has to offer.
Walter B — Google review
Always a must do when friends and family are visiting. They offer a tour if you ask.
Curt W — Google review
A little bit of orchid heaven. When you enter the store you're greeted by a beautiful aroma. I knew little about orchids, but the sale lady was very knowledgeable, and explained the care and feeding to me (in Spanish). So a great place to explore, learn, and buy orchids and associated products at a fair price.
Marcus — Google review
Beautiful selection or orchids. Courteous employees. The tour, at $5 is WAY overpriced. A brief walkthrough of a portion of the property that involves showing how they grow their orchids. Worth a stop to look at the pretty orchids they have on sale, skip the tour.
La P — Google review
This is an amazing tour of a huge facility. Tour is very informative and worth every moment. More orchids of more variety than I could imagine. Put this place on your must do list.
David K — Google review
We got to enjoy and smell numerous species of orchids on our tour of this farm. Lots of photo opportunities, and other plants and birds to see. Our tour guide spoke English which was a big plus.

We visited back in 2015. If you love history and see ancient ruins over 2,000 years old, this is a wonderful place to learn about those civilizations. Ingapirca is a well preserved area and the views of the Andes mountains are awesome, breathtaking. It is absolutely worth visitng.
Carlos B — Google review
Didn't get to go inside or up close or learn much about the templo—what some would consider the main feature of the ruins here—perhaps because some students were studying it or reconstructing it at the time, saw some scaffolding and half a dozen jovenes dusting the stones—I don't really know, my guide didn't say anything about the templo, when we arrived here at the end of the tour she simply broke the news that we owed her more money because, unbeknownst to us, she was a "private guide" not included in the admission price, even though we had not personally contracted her, the complejo had called her in for us when we purchased the tickets. See my review of the tourist trap "complejo" for more, but suffice it to say Ingapirca no vale la pena ni la plata, güey, vete a Cajas o El Chorro de Giron para disfrutar esta región de véras.
Nomad N — Google review
Visited here as part of our organized day tour. Loved learning about the history and significance of this location.

(Translated by Google) Unfortunately when I arrived I found it closed to the public. I only saw it from the outside, it is very well kept and the gardens around it are also very well looked after. The variable weather made the color of the stones almost always uniform and did not allow for that play of polychromy that the site has as a characteristic!! However it has its charm and must be seen regardless!!

(Translated by Google) Excellent tourist and archaeological place. The Temple of the Sun of Ingapirca is an archaeological site located in the province of Cañar, Ecuador. It is one of the most important and emblematic places of the Cañari culture and the Inca civilization in the country. The temple was built in the 15th century by the Incas, and it is believed that it was used for rituals and religious ceremonies. The structure is impressive, with stone walls and architecture that reflects the skill and precision of the Inca builders. The Temple of the Sun is famous for its orientation toward the June solstice, when the sun aligns perfectly with the temple's entrance. This suggests that the Incas had an advanced knowledge of astronomy and mathematics. The Ingapirca archaeological site also includes other buildings and structures, such as the House of the Viracochas, the Main Plaza and the Cemetery. Visitors can explore the site and learn about the history and culture of the Cañaris and the Incas. The construction of the temple of the sun has not been modified and is kept intact from how it was built by the Cañari ancestors. The panorama is totally beautiful and welcoming. Did the waterfall hike. Pickup on time by Wilson and he was a fantastic guide. We had ample restroom breaks, and he suggested several different levels of trails to choose from. Wilson customized the tour for my level of ability. I wore a bathing suit, long sleeve quick drying shirt, and sturdy closed toe water sandals. Afterwards we enjoyed an authentic Ecuadorian meal at a small local restaurant. Recommend

By far, the best excursion we have ever booked! Wilson was the coolest guide ever:) so much fun and truly adventurous:)

Amazing group. We took them to cloud forest and it was a great trip to see local sugar cane production, hike to a waterfall, and eat a local lunch. Trip is definitely worth doing for all and even kids of all ages. From our experience the bugs were limited but bug spray is needed.

We had a fabulous time on our Cloud Forest Hike. Our guide Noe took great care of us, from all the hiking to having a great lunch. We were very appreciative of his knowledge. We found this tour when we were still in the states and booked once we arrived in Equador. Communication was so easy on WhatsApp. A definite recommendation!
Vincenza S — Google review
They helped us find a wonderful place to stay in Bucay. We did not get the tour to the cascades because we wanted to rest. However, I think they are very professional and helpful tourist guides. Prices are reasonable.

We had an amazing time on two different tours with Bucay Adventures. The first tour we took was a guided hike to the Piedra Blanca waterfalls. This amazing tour included repelling down a 30 m waterfall, with all the equipment included. The second adventure we took with them was an afternoon on the river that runs through Bucay white water rafting! It was our first time doing anything like this and the professional level of Bucay Adventures made sure we had an amazing and fun time the whole day! I would highly recommend them for whatever adrenaline inducing adventure they offer!

Great tour operator with quality equipment and staff dedicated to customer service, safety and satisfaction. Galo, the owner, went out of his way to organize a private tour for me. Luis, my guide, provided good company and excellent support. Hiking and biking in the spectacular beauty of Chimborazo on a gorgeous, sunny day and with enough space to be alone with nature and my thoughts was an unforgettably wonderful experience!

I ve never had a such a good bike, guide, i felt me safe. It s one of my best memory in Ecuador, downhill the Chimborazo. If there s a place to go and a company tout recommand, it s this one
Catherine P — Google review
We did the mid-long mtb tour on Chimborazo. Galo took a lot of time to explain us the tour and procedure in detail the evening bevor. Safety equipment is in good shape, bikes are a bit outdated but in good condition and more than sufficient to bike down the Vulcan safely. We can highly recommend to do the tour with Pro Bici, the are very well experience and took care to give the customers a special experience.

Very flexible for a group of 11 people. We had a blast with the guided despite less than ideal weather. Only complaint was how long the meeting the night before took-over 2 hours, we got back to our hotel at 10:30PM.
Lindsay L — Google review
Amazing experience! This company uses different trials than all the other companies. Truly in the country side riding on dirt roads instead of the asphalt road like other companies. Very calm and professional with me. Had a great opportunity to go to a unique forest to eat lunch as well. This tour is a bit difficult, yet doable for people seeking adventure! Possibly the best thing I’ve ever done in my life.
Emily — Google review
Very friendly people, however quite unorganized. Our introduction took more than 2 hours after we had to wait 40min for someone to appear at their office (which btw is a huge mess). In between we had to run to the supermarket before it closes, as you have to buy your own drinks and food for the tour. Too much hustle for an organized tour of this price...we opted out in fear that the tour will be as unorganized and lengthy as the introduction the day before. Therefore, despite everyone being very friendly I would not recommend the tour.

Located on the northeast side of Parque Pedro Vicente Maldonado, the catedral de San Pedro de Riobamba stands as the main church of its diocese. This Roman Catholic cathedral boasts a simple interior design and a noteworthy Baroque facade adorned with numerous medallions. Following the devastating earthquake of 1797 that obliterated its predecessor, construction of the present-day church commenced in 1810 and concluded in 1835.

Libin K — Google review
On the northeast side of the Parque Pedro Vicente Maldonado is the catedral de San Pedro de Riobamba, the main church of the diocese of the same name. This Roman Catholic church with its simply designed interior is mainly notable for its Baroque facade, decorated with many medallions. After the old cathedral was destroyed in 1797 by the most severe earthquake in Ecuadorian history (8.3 on the Richter Scale), the current church was built between 1810 and 1835. The cathedral, especially the facade, is one of the finest examples of Plateresque architecture and with a mix of indigenous and colonial elements.

(Translated by Google) The main temple and historic icon of the city. Its mestizo baroque façade was moved from the old town of Riobamba after the 1797 earthquake and is adorned with sculptures that combine Catholic tradition with the Andean worldview. The three brick-topped towers are considered a "historical scar," added during the Republican era to ensure the structure's stability. Located in the heart of Riobamba, across from Maldonado Park and next to the Municipal Palace, it is one of the city's most iconic and photographed landmarks. Ubicada en pleno centro de Riobamba, frente al Parque Maldonado y junto al Palacio Municipal, es uno de los puntos más representativos y fotografiados de la ciudad.

Volcan Altar

Volcano
Nature & Parks
Mountains
Volcan Altar, an extinct volcano, boasts a colorful crater lake and offers hiking trails, climbing opportunities, and a refuge for adventurers. It is part of the iconic Andean volcanoes like Chimborazo, Altar, and Tungurahua. The area has attracted famous explorers such as Humboldt, Bolivar, and Whymper. Visitors are advised to wear rubber boots due to muddy roads and contact the park in advance if camping.
Recommendations: wear rubber boots whether it rains or not because the road is full of mud. If you camp, you must contact the park in advance. It is recommended to have done trekking before because otherwise it can be very difficult. It is an experience that is worth it.

The 'yellow lake' or laguna amarilla, is one of the most stunning place in Ecuador. You can camp with your own tent if you walk untill the end of the valley, passing the cottage. Better to go when it's not raining and wear boots!
Marianna — Google review
I'm amazed by the beauty of this place, the volcano is magestic. Definitely worth all the walking in mud for hours. You can camp in here and go see the many lakes surrounding the volcano.
Amanda E — Google review
Laguna amarillo and the surrounding areas are some of the most beautiful surroundings I have ever seen. The views are absolutely stunning and for anyone able to make the 2 day trek with their own camping gear, I would totally recommend it. However, avoid Candetur tour company at all costs. Previous to the trek itself, we were given the option to hike the entire path and back in a single day which we decided to do and they told me they 100% recommend that I do not take my trekking boots, and to use their wellies instead. On the day of the hike, their boots did not fit, thankfully I ignored their advice and brought my own anyway. After waking up at 3:30, our guide was late and we left 45 minutes late. He rode a horse almost the entire way whilst we walked, had no interesting information to tell us and spent most of the time looking at his phone whilst we struggled through the mud. It was completely irresponsible to tell us the hike on foot would take 11 hours. we usually complete our hikes in less than the estimated time, yet we were hiking for over 14 hours, whilst our guide (Alex) told us from his horse that we were too slow and continued to lie to us about how long was left. Our wonderful experience at the top was tainted by a trek back in total darkness, utterly exhausted and squelching through muddy paths with exposed barbed wire. Go to El Altar. Do not go with Candetur.

La Casa del Arbol

Lookouts
La Casa del Arbol is a must-visit destination in Ecuador, offering a unique experience in a volcanic valley. The site features a treehouse and viewing deck surrounded by picturesque gardens, providing spectacular views of the Tungurahua volcano. Visitors can enjoy zip lines, explore beautiful waterfalls on guided hikes, and take in the stunning scenery. The garden boasts vibrant flowers and mini zip lines for kids, while the main attraction is the iconic treehouse with swings overlooking the breathtaking landscape.
My wife and I came here this afternoon expecting to see a bunch of "Instantgram" influencers jumping up and down and doing wardrobe changes to get the iconic photo up here. It was surprisingly quite the opposite. We met a few local families up here who we chatted with for a while and had some really great conversations with them in addition to enjoying the rides up there for $1pp. I can't say it'll be the same for everyone, but I'll remember my trip up here for a while.
Travis M — Google review
I visited La Casa del Árbol with my lady, and we had a wonderful time. The view alone is worth the trip — you’re surrounded by clouds, mountains, and pure fresh air. But the real magic happened when I got on the famous swing. At first, I was a little nervous, but one of the employees gave me a good push — and before I knew it, I was swinging high over the edge of the mountain. It was such an exhilarating and freeing feeling. As soon as I went forward, I could just breathe deeply and enjoy the moment. I honestly felt like a kid again — full of joy and wonder. It’s a simple place, but the feeling you get there is unforgettable. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting Baños. Go early around 10:00AM and don’t leave without giving the swing a try!
Faris H — Google review
Nice little park with a treehouse, some free swings at the edge of the mountain and the beautiful garden! There’s also a views of the volcano mountain nearby!
B — Google review
Amazing! A must if you are visiting Baños! Try to go in the morning if you can as it gets foggy starting at 2pm and sometimes it will not clear up from then. We got great photos and the man working there had so much strength to push the swing I felt like I was at a Parks ride. You don’t have to have him push you but if you like adrenaline go for it. I came here 10 years ago and it was just the swing. Now they have added a nice garden, few places for couples’s photos and the tarabita which is also fun. Totally recommend! if you want a nice view of the mountains and the volcano, you are better off going in the morning if it’s sunny it should be clear. We went around 3 and it was foggy so I’m including a picture with fog (current) and without fog (from 10 years ago) so you can check the difference. Entrance fee was $1 or $2 dollars per person- I cannot remember well since I visited too many places the same day. Parking is available for a dollar and it includes access to the bathroom. There is a steep hill from the parking lot to the site which was challenging to walk up. I was out of air for like 2 -3 minutes as we are not used to walking steep hills.
C’est V — Google review
I feel like my family and I went at a perfect time, not too busy. Had swings for all ages. We really enjoyed ourselves a lot and took so many pictures. They have these 360 photo booth thing that you pay $1 and it spins for a good minute. Has beautiful views and flowers all over the place
Angela P — Google review
Amazing views and a very great experience. The swing was a fun time, hope you're not scared of heights.
John P — Google review
To be honest, I was a little underwhelmed. It might have had something to do with the clouds blocking the views, but even without them, I don't think I missed much. There are a few other things to do that are mildly entertaining. It was a dollar to park and a dollar to get in, so great value if you want to check it out.
Scott M — Google review
It's super touristy. A pretty garden with lovely views but probably better with kids. They have the swings, a zip line, a tree house and a kitsch hummingbird seat for two. We enjoyed the views.

interesting church. the Chiostro is wonderful in my opinion. Not great historical value, compared with what we are used in Europe, but representative of the city of Baños and well manteined.
Walter G — Google review
Pilgrims and parades! The construction of the Basílica Católica Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Agua Santa (1904-1944), a genuine pilgrimage church, is thanks to the priest-mayor Tomás Halflants from Belgium. The basilica is characterized by a compact, gray facade with white spiers. Every year, the church attracts many pilgrims who come to pray to the "Virgin of the Rosary of the Holy Water," a saint who protects people and property from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Not an unnecessary luxury in a country teeming with active volcanoes, Baños itself lies at the foot of the Tungurahua volcano (which is strangely the origin of the sacred water). A good, but perhaps busy time to visit the church is the month of October when processions are held in honor of the Virgin for 24 days.

You see this from anywhere in Banos. I only went inside once and that was when an orchestra was playing some famous film songs like Mission Impossible etc. I don't know if that is common but it's pretty cool.

CASCADA EL PAILÓN

Lovely experience to see the waterfall! I actually thought you could walk under to the other side but it is 2 separate entry’s, we opted not to bother with the other side as felt we had seen the waterfall beautifully here!
Jennifer P — Google review
Huge rushing water from the falls, you will get soaked if you choose to. Easy-going trail is good for all ages. It can be packed if you don't go early.
John P — Google review
Cascada El Pailón del Diablo is an absolutely mesmerizing destination that should be at the top of every traveler’s list when visiting Ecuador. The grandeur of the waterfall, cascading dramatically into the verdant canyon, is a sight that truly defies description. The approach to the falls involves a lengthy trek, so it’s crucial to wear sturdy hiking shoes—avoid vans, heels, or casual sneakers. The terrain can be challenging, so come prepared with a large water bottle, a raincoat, a hat, and sunscreen, as the Ecuadorian sun is intense. The path to the waterfall is scenic but can be steep and uneven, so take your time and make frequent rest stops to enjoy the surrounding beauty. The sound of the roaring water and the mist that envelops the area add to the natural splendor. Don't forget to bring your camera to capture the breathtaking views and the surrounding lush landscape. This destination offers an unforgettable experience with its stunning vistas and the awe-inspiring power of nature. For anyone visiting Ecuador, Cascada El Pailón del Diablo is an essential stop and a highlight of any trip!!

It is the perfect place to meet at night. The view is incredible although you have to take into account the walking times. The only problem are the guides, it is a lottery if you are going to get a good guide or one who just wants to finish the tour quickly.
Cesar S — Google review
Amazing must see attraction in Quito! Will need a 15-20 minutes walk to the waterfall. The pathway leading to the waterfall is set in such a way that you pass by next to and below the waterfall. Be prepared to be drenched. The panoramic view at the top of waterfall is fantastic. Incredible experience
CK C — Google review
This was a fine stop. The waterfall is powerful but the water is brown and there's litter in the canyon. It's a photogenic spot with the winding staircase. There's an area where you have to crawl between rocks to get to the top. The suspension bridge was fun and the cafe is very cute.
Fiorella C — Google review
Checked out both the new entrance and the old entrance and would recommend the new entrance. Paid $2 to enter each (so $4 total) plus $1 for parking. The views from the new entrance are better and it doesn’t require as much of a hike to get into the park.
Patrick S — Google review
We came to the place around 11 am to noon. It was a weekend and there were not a lot of people in the park. We breezed through the gate entrance and we already started taking pictures of the cascading falls that pounded through the rocks. We went farther down and marveled at the rain forest. We hiked down and reached 2 hanging bridges. The bridges were safe to walk on and you have good views of the cascading falls. Farther down, you go down the stairs where you will be closer to the falls. You can get wet as you move closer. It is quite a walk up and down from the bottom to the top of the falls. Any spot is a good spot to take in the view and take pictures. Beautiful scenery as you hear the thunderous pounding of the cascading falls. Highly recommended for a visit in Baños.

Great natural park to visit. Really beautiful. The tour is not expensive and is of very high value. Very scenic relaxing walk. Lots of knowledge from the guide. The shop at the end has very high quality crafts from the area and good natural medicine that helped me a lot after! It really did. The crafts are higher quality I think, beautiful, and better prices here. I was lucky as Chris shared local stories and customs after with his personal acting and presentation, in the authentic lodge! How amazing. Unforgettable visit.

Fantastic experience. Would definitely recommend to learn more about medicinal plants, the Amazon, and local communities. Janna is a great and educational guide, empathetic and friendly.

Beautiful adventure in the rainforest. Excellent place to spot unique forest wildlife such as insects. A great place to learn about the indigenous cultures and their medicinal uses of plants as well as wildlife. Plus it's easy to access.

My girlfriend and I had a great time here! We learned a lot about medicinal plants of the Amazon and what plants Amazonian communities use for different purposes. Got to try fruit and cinnamon leaf! Very informational and interesting. Definitely worth a visit if you have 1-2 hours to spare in Puyo!

Amazing place! I'm glad I just happened to be walking by. Highly recommended! Great information to be learned! I bought 2 tinctures and some honey not to long ago. You mentioned some extra instructions for the tinctures. The dark one was 3 drops into water before drinking. Anything else? The light colored one I believe is for hair. Should go on hair overnight and can be washed out in the morning? Also curious as to the types of bees the honey is from.

$3 for adults. A beautiful botanical garden, though we didn't get a chance to walk much of it. Chris will literally talk to you all day if you want. He or one of his guides will tell you all about the culture/life of the peoples of the Amazon and their ways of using plants in daily life for food and medicinal cures. Definitely an incredible experience/value.

If you need to cool off, this is the place to come. We stopped by on a Monday and there were very few people, so we almost had the place to ourselves. The entrance cost is $3 for foreigners and $2 for Ecuadorians. At first, I wasn't sure if we were heading to the right place, but just keep driving until the road ends. The location on Google Maps is correct.

A great great spot in the middle of the jungle. Fresh water from the top of the Andean Mointains gives you the right cooling. At the entrance you have a lot of food and refreshments to buy.

Good natural swimming holes and stunning landscape overview of the Llanganates Mountains. Overnight accommodation is available ($7.50 per person per night) and food services too! The river background sound is Amazing. Bus are available in the weekend in "Centinela del Tena" (10:30 am, 12:30 am, 3:30 am $1.50 each way). The place is managed by the local indigenous people and is a very good way to do direct support to our local families. Enjoy!

The guides on site are great and know all the animals backgrounds and exactly why they are there. It's great to see an operation like this in the Amazon that can host animals that unfortunately could not survive in the wild.
P K — Google review
Neat experience! We were able to see a bunch of the native animals that we did not see in the wild. They have a great system of volunteers from all over the world that vome stay to learn about and take care of the animals. These animals have all been rescued, most from being someone's pet or side show, so they are unable to be released to the wild. Any that can be cared for and released will be.
Jennifer C — Google review
I spent time volunteering here after visiting with a school trip. The volunteers, owners and local workers were all very nice and made the work and time here enjoyable. I will go back if I have the opportunity again.
Emma S — Google review
A great place maintained by people who do everything they can to improve rescued animals‘ lives. Instead of complaining people should rather try to understand deeper - and support more.
Dominik B — Google review
Such a great place to see animals, and definitely an ethical zoo. Most of the animals are rehabilitated and released back into the jungle.
Chris B — Google review
AmaZOOnico is one of those places that matters. I have been a volunteer and professional Animal Caretaker for a few years now, having spend a multiple periods of three months at various animal rehab centers. For me AmaZOOnico stands out in how they respect animals, how they work with volunteers and how they take care of the local communities. Working at AmaZOOnico was amazing, I had chances to get educated by their inhouse Biologist about the rain forest, learn how to take care of animals and create my own stamp to leave behind. a lot of place will treat volunteers as free labor, I feel that AmaZOOnico wants you to create something to be proud of and will give you the liberty to do so if you act responsible. The Project is distant from any big city, because you will live in the Amazon forest, but that creates a peacefulness you can't easily find. The people of AmaZOOnico treat animals as animals. They realize that they need to be treated as wild animals and not as pets. This is not a ZOO even if it's in the name (the ZOO in amaZOOnico stands for Zoologic). This project wants to reduce the amount animals in captivity and take care of a forest that needs help. I loved being at AmaZOOnico: being a tour guide, taking care of the animals that can't be released and having fun after and during work with the other volunteers. I have made memories and friends for life.
Sam F — Google review
A special place hidden among the jungle for special animals needing a little extra care. The staff was knowledgeable and the grounds were gorgeous! They seem focused on ethical rehabilitation, prevention, and protection.
Taylor N — Google review
It was really sad to see many birds in small cage the guide told us that they are very stressed and the attack each other, I think the owner should release some of them instead of keeping them locked there. Its still better than going to a zoo but I wish they release the animals faster and give them more space.

Fantastic cave experience! Highly recommend!
Brenna — Google review
It was awesome! But you'll literally get to swim in a cave, and you will have to wade through water. So wear a bathing suit and if you don't have a second pair of shoes, you should rent them (they need to be closed), and bring a second t-shirt. It was a lot of fun, but be careful when they offer you the Guayaba tea afterwards. If you're a regular coffee drinker you'll probably be fine, but I couldn't sleep for a second the night after when I had some at 3 pm. It was a good tea but very strong.
Elias K — Google review
Whether you want a quick 45 minute venture into the cave system or 5 hours the experience is like non other. Be warned there are big spiders and you will be wet, with a chance to jump in a 2 meter water hole! $3 to take the tour, and $2 to enter the water park!

Reserva Ecologica Antisana, named after the striking volcano that dominates its landscape, is a breathtaking ecological haven in Ecuador. Nestled within the northwestern Oriente region, this reserve boasts an array of rare species and stunning natural beauty. The area features dense cloudforests and montane forests that can be quite challenging to navigate for hikers seeking adventure.
This national park is gorgeous! A must to visit if you’re traveling to Ecuador. The park offers beautiful views of the Andes mountains and most notably Volcan Antisana. Come with warm clothes, layers and rain gear because the weather is unpredictable! The park had beautiful animals passing by such as Andean deer, they were a treat to see!

Otherworldly landscapes, beautiful birding, never seen anywhere else! Visited on 13th May 2023. The car service we have been using for the last three months now (a big shoutout to Xavier Transporte Quito - +593-99-503-6252, available on WhatsApp as well, for excellent cars and even better drivers who speak fluent English and Spanish of course) picked my wife and me from our apartment in Quito at 6:30AM. We headed to Tambor Condor, a private cabin with restaurants. They have hummingbird feeders, but it is also a great place to watch the Andean Condors jump off the face of the cliff into the ravine and then catch the thermals to fly them above the cliffs (these birds really hate flapping their giant 10 ft wingspan wings). Our expert birding guide, Gabriel Raza (+593-98-263-5798, available on WhatsApp as well) joined us with his birding scope and his binoculars. His ability to identify the birds by their sound and from a great distance is amazing. And then he will pull out his app on the phone and show what we should be looking for. He has been the best bird guide we have had ever and we used a few other excellent guides before Xavier found Gabriel. Highly recommend layered warm clothing, rain coat, good boots, warm hat for this place. We forgot our second layer and we borrowed some from Xavier and Gabriel. It was cold in the morning and even more so in the afternoon when it gets really foggy and drizzles. After the birding at Tambor, we continued toward the La Mica lake and stopped on the side of a stream where we had wonderful sightings of many birds including the Ecuadorian Hillstar hummingbirds. As we kept climbing higher while driving towards the lake and the vista of the gorgeous snow and cloud covered Antisana volcano, we found a very different landscape, the ground covered with beds of alpine shrubs with their beautiful carpets and flowers. We found many white-tailed deers with the males having reindeer like antlers. We stopped at La Mica lake and did a short walk to the edge of the lake. It was drizzling, blustery and cold, but we got the see the cute Grass Wrens singing to each other.

Impressive and magnificent views of the Antisana volcano, lagunas de Secas, Mica lake, the páramo, and wildlife with condors, deers, curiquingue falcons, culpeo foxes, spectacled bears, and birds, a lot. Very clean, but demanding paths.

Reserva ecológica antisana offers nice views and a great trekking place to enjoy the nature all around you, breathtaking views of antisana volcano and the Mica Lagoon on the other side. The reserve DOES NOT allow the entry of pet's, your car will be inspected upon arrival and there is a second control you must go thru by foot. When driving there please keep your car in the designated paths at all time. Please abide by the local guidelines and respect the nature, you might en able to spot Condors and many other wild animals like rabbits, deers and so on.

Papallacta Hot Springs is a high-elevation destination offering stunning views of the Antisana Volcano and Cotopaxi. The trails here provide an opportunity to experience the beauty of the mountains and year-round glaciers. Visitors can enjoy relaxing in thermal waters while taking in the scenic mountain vistas. It's important to stay hydrated due to the high altitude, intense sun, and UV index.
Very nice Hot Springs in Andes Mountains at an altitude of 11000 feet. It is a short 1 and 1/2 hour drive from Quito and a 45-minute drive from Quito airport. It is on the way from Quito to Amazon rainforest. Make sure to arrange for your return trip from Hot springs to Quito before you arrive there. They're at Hot springs outside every cabin. For a better experience with excellent service, for a fee, you can use the spa, take a steam bath, and a body massage. There's also a restaurant where you can relax.

Just got back from a quick two-day getaway and it totally blew my mind! 🌿 The place is unbelievably beautiful, the staff were super friendly, and the service was spot on. I even had a “relaxation massage” with a lovely lady named Cruz—and it was absolutely amazing!
Ghada H — Google review
This is a natural hot spring resort, about an hour from Quito and a perfect stop on the way to and from the airport as it's on the right side of the city. Although many visitors seem to come for the day, we were lucky to stay in a cabin with hot springs right outside the door and the two larger pools around 100 m away. The cabin was cosy and atmospheric. Lunch and dinner in the restaurant were both excellent, prices were more at the European level than the bargains elsewhere in Ecuador, but understanding this is a luxury resort. The buffet breakfast was a bit underwhelming, but not the end of the world and the staff were always friendly and attentive. This became a lovely memory of the end of our trip to Ecuador

Located high in the volcanic Andes mountains area over 10, 000 feet above sea level...Scenic and beautiful! The hot springs therma bubbling, relaxing & conveniently located right outside my room door. Truly a gem worth visiting. Area is quaint and well maintained. Friendly staff. Buffet Breakfast with fresh fruit, yogurt, Meats, eggs, bread varieties, sweet cakes, coffee & delicious cocoa. Something for vegans too! Rooms modern very clean... offer Free WiFi. There was fog mist & cloudiness on the mountains making the area very chilly. The front desk bright me a portable heater to my room on request. Located 1 hour from Quito. Yes I would recommend and vist again.

Nice hot springs. Stopped on a Saturday and it was 48°F out so the place wasn't busy. The main pools are nice and hot while the smaller pools were either boiling or cold. Get a locker for your stuff. There are private showers and changing rooms. There is a small cafeteria that serves burgers but stay away from the salchipapas as here they are literally French fries with a hot dog on top.

Gorgeous hot springs in a picturesque setting. Surrounded by lush forested mountains, a serene experience is guaranteed. Really nice facility, very clean, well laid out, and well maintained. The water is not as mineralized as some hot springs (a more funky and pungent outburst is always appreciated!) However this experience was wonderful, therapeutic, and top-notch all the way.

Laguna de la Cocha, located in Pasto, is a stunning crater lake surrounded by lush hills and greenery. Visitors can enjoy boat excursions on the lake and explore nearby trails. The area offers breathtaking views, fresh air, and the opportunity to interact with friendly locals. Many visitors have enjoyed walking around the island and swimming in the invigorating waters of the lake.
A MUST! you will find the typical little boats that will take you on a tour to 3 different stops. The first one is a base from which you can see the lake from above. The second one is a reserve that people.is not allowed to walk since the pandemic, as it became evident the species were thriving in the absence of humans, however, you can still come down for some information and nice views. The third one is at the hotel area. It is an important recommendation: YOU CAN NEGOTIATE QITH YOUR BOAT PERSON TO BE PICKED UP LATER FOR AN ADDITIONAL PRICE, that way, you can go up to the hotel and have lunch with an amazing view, the fish in the lake is a mix of trucha and salmon, and the picada is amazing. The blackberry juice is the specialty!!

San Agustín Archaeological Park

Mentioned on

National park
Sights & Landmarks
Ancient Ruins
San Agustín Archaeological Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site that offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient civilizations of Colombia. Nestled in the hills surrounding the quaint town of San Andrés de Pisimbala, this park features impressive funeral mounds and intricate pre-Columbian sculptures that reflect the spiritual connection these cultures had with nature, particularly water and wildlife like jaguars and eagles.
Just an incredible place full of tombs and statues set in a mainly jungle setting that requires quite a bit of hiking to see everything but the rewards are rich indeed. Like may people I suspect, I only knew about this place vaguely but was hugely impressed on my visit. The numerous statues are in fantastic shape considering the age of them, probably because they were buried for so long. I recommend hiring one of the older local guides as they can relate so much history and point out so many features you would most likely miss were you to go on your own. Allow 3 to 4 hours to visit to get the most out of the park. Entrance fees are well worth it and also cover additional sites that are also worth visiting but you'll likely need to do those on a tour if you don't have your own car.
Phil M — Google review
Amazing place to view history and the statues these groups created. Worth the money. The $65000 that people complain about covers three parks which is great value. Please go and see these spectacular monuments.
Janek S — Google review
Amazing place. If you come to Colombia you must visit San Agustin and San Agustin Archaeological Park. Amazing history and amazing introduction to the. culture of Colombia.
Mark S — Google review
We expected more from our visit, first, its expensive, the museum with its statues and pottery is a must see to understand more about the rest you will see on your walk. The burial sites and statues are very interesting. The carved out place by the river with its bamboo bridge is very special and one of the highlights. If you follow the staircase up to the last burial site your will find an excellent open restaurant fillid with miscellanous mixture of music and souvenirs. The empanadas and cane sugar juice were delighting. Across it is another place thats belongs to the same family and sells homemade icecream.
Peter J — Google review
The sculptures are interesting, but little information about them survive, which leaves open the possibility of "creative" interpretation such as the one we heard from a guide today. We were regaled with stories about Atlantis and Egypt and pygmies and seemingly anything but the factual local information - real woo woo stuff. These questionable interpretations by our guide reflected poorly on the site and detracted from our experience, which was otherwise pleasant.
Layne M — Google review
The largest necropolis in the world is in Colombia! Hundreds if not thousands of stone sculptures, and most of them still buried, is a small sample of the great civilization that settled in these lands thousands of years ago. I went with my wife and my 10-11 year old children and it was one of the best trips in my life. Colombians, let's value this kind of treasures, and foreigners are very welcome to visit this marvel. A few tips: Hire one of the local guides of the park, arrive early, bring hydration, good shoes, there are 3 more parks, this is the main one if you don't have much time at least go to the idol park. Oh and bring the best disposition to know this beautiful place.
Miguel N — Google review
The park is pretty nice and I can recommend it for every tourist who is interested in archeological topics. However, the price of 65k is way too much, compared to other sights in Colombia. It would be nice to have a cheaper ticket option for this park only, because many tourists only stay for one day and are not interested in the other parks that are quite far away.
Chris S — Google review
We're always looking for places that allow dogs. Probably the best one we've found. Hours are entry hours are 8-3 but you can stay in the park until 5.

La Chaquira - San Agustín

Mentioned on

Archaeological site
Sights & Landmarks
La Chaquira is a historic ceremonial site dating back to the 1st-10th century, featuring intricately carved figures and offering stunning views of valleys and the river. Accessible via a 25-30 minute walk along dirt farm roads, this site boasts hidden statues amidst bushes and long grass, as well as a stone carving craftsman and local artisans selling beautiful thread bracelets. Visitors can descend an extensive staircase to behold the breathtaking panorama of the river and canyon from two viewpoint platforms.
A beautiful place to come to and visit while in San Agustin. Of the many archaeological sites located in the area, this one was probably my favorite, mainly because of the stunning view found at the end of the trail. From town, its about a 3 km walk which is not so bad. There is no fee for entry and the man at the entrance of the site is quite nice.

La Chaquira was one of the stops on my horseback riding tour through San Agustin, and it turned out to be my favorite. The history is interesting but the views here were absolutely breathtaking (mountains, the river, waterfalls, etc.). Some people said that it was a dangerous area but I didn't have any issues while I was there with my local guide. I loved it so much that I even had to list it as one of the reasons San Agustin is worth visiting on my San Agustin blog post.
AdventureEvermore — Google review
Entering from the main road after visiting El Tablón. You walk about 25/30min along dirt farm roads. La Chaquira is located at the end of the road. There is a Resteraunt with light snacks and refreshments. A stone carving craftsman and a girl making beautiful thread bracelets. There are statues all over the property hidden in bushes and long grass. It’s also recommended you walk down an extensive staircase to see the River and canyon. There are 2 viewpoint platforms. It’s a nice option to see the statues and some beautiful countryside for free. (Only pay $1200 for the bus or $2000 for the mototaxi from centre San Agustin.

Beautiful view. It is a bit of a hike. You can see three waterfalls and Magdalena river from the hill. It is more about the scenario. Lovely view. I went at noon and it was super sunny but it was fine.

Very cool spot 40min walk away from the pueblo with a view on Rio Magdalena and a famous San Augustin statue carved in a rock.

A great view on the deep valley and the waterfall and, if you turn around, also on the figures (I could only find discover 2, not third). But the way is long and steep. Keep it in your mind before you go down! Parking on a farm after a small and steep path, a small parking fee instead a intrance fee. After your way back you will really enjoy a cool drink on the farm's bar - how joyful no plastic, just glass bottles.

Absolutely unique remains of incredibly talented and brave Sculptors people of San Agustín. The landscape is breathtaking. Please take care of that treasure. We saw people jumping of the 4000 yo sculptures to take (ridiculous) selfies, it's horrifying.

Estrecho del Río Magdalena

Mentioned on

Nature & Parks
Bodies of Water
Estrecho del Río Magdalena is a must-see destination with its stunning natural beauty and rich history. The area offers a flat trail leading to the river, where it narrows to about 2 meters wide at granite rocks. Although the uneven rocks by the water may pose challenges for those with mobility issues, it's a popular spot for locals to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views. However, swimming is not recommended due to strong currents and deep waters.
The place was not crowded at all. We saw about 10 other people in total. If you are bringing children along, you will want to know that part of the river rocks runs along a steep riverbank. However the amazing views were oh so worth it. It was so incredible and beautiful. I would do it again in a heartbeat. The pictures say it all.

Must see beautiful place. Where the river Magdalena squeezes through the smallest opening. Full of history and beautiful views.

The attraction itself isn’t that visually spectacular, however the concept that this river runs through most of the country adds weight to the experience. Worthwhile doing especially if hiring a motorbike to explore the area around san agustin

Easy to find, lush, and beaty. Long stair to access.
Germán M — Google review
Super and impressive to see the river finding a narrow path through the rocks with an impressive speed as well

Magic place, very important stop considering the relevance of this river in the country
Sergio Q — Google review
A shortish flat trail leads down to the river where it narrows to about 2 meters wide at the granite rocks. Area by the water is uneven rocks so those with mobility issues may not be able to get close to the narrows. A popular spot for locals just relaxing. Swimming is definitely out as the currents are very strong and the water is very deep and there are what look to possibly be downdrafts. Very dangerous.

Awesome place. Recently, the sulphur mine was closed for keeping this place in good conditions for more time. The local guides from the Purace tribu offer the tour guide for 40000 COP without intermediaries. This place can be reached walking from the basement located in 4200 meters over the sea level. Parque Arqueológico Nacional de Tierradentro

National park
Nature & Parks
Parque Arqueológico Nacional de Tierradentro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Cauca, Colombia, showcasing pre-Columbian underground tombs adorned with paintings and carvings. This ancient site, distinct from San Agustin, offers visitors a glimpse into a civilization that existed around 1400 years ago. Accessible from Popayan by public transport, the journey takes about three hours on rough roads.
Definitely worth the visit! There are 5 sites with underground tombs, some of which are beautifully painted and decorated. The hike itself to all the locations was beautiful with well marked paths and great views. Costs $65,000 per person which gives you a two day pass to the hiking trails and archaeological sites. We did the first part, Segovia to El Tablón the first day, stayed the night in the village of San Andrés, and did the second part, alto de San Andrés and alto de aguacate, the next day. The second hike up to aguacate is quite steep but not too long, the view is worth is though! The village is small with a lovely church, only a couple restaurants. We stayed at la Terraza for 25,000 per person per night, but ate at La Portada because they were much friendlier. Next time would stay there instead. Not many tourists, we were the only ones at the sites and on the trails both days so visiting the tombs felt really special. Overall it was a great experience.

Darc S — Google review
Parque Tierradentro is an exceptional place, a must visit if you're in this part of Colombia. Basically, these are subterranean burial sites appr. 1400 year old. It's possible to visit on your own, with public transport, below I'll explain how. From Popayan, there are several buses daily (schedule attached). The trip costs 40k one way. Takes about 3 hours. The road is terrible, I wouldn't recommend coming by car. On the bus try to take front seats, you'll be jumping and shaking a lot. The bus won't take you all the way to the park, but will leave you at "El Crucero" (search on Google maps). From there it's a 1km+ walk to the park entrance. There is also bus connection with La Plata if you're coming from Tatacoa. For foreigners, the cost of the entry is 50k. Factor in a night to spend in San Andres, because the last bus is at 4pm, and the sites close at 4pm too, it's impossible to visit everything by then. I visited on Tuesday, and was the only person at each site. The park is very well organized and clearly marked. Next to the entrance, there is a museum, worth a 15-20 min stop. All the sites are accessed through hiking trails, with beautiful views, some of them - especially Aguacate - quite steep, so keep that in mind. On the first day you can easily visit Segovia, El Duende and El Tablón, and then arrive to San Andres where you'll stay overnight. There is a cheap (30k) hospedaje next to the church. All in all, it will take you 3-4 hours. The following day you can hike to San Andres site (15 min) and Aguacate (1h 10 min), and then make your way down to take a bus (1 h). I went down towards Inza (gasolinera el Hato) instead of returning to the museum to save myself some minutes of shaking in the bus. I was pretty exhausted by the time I was down. You'll need to bring water and maybe some snacks, as in the sun the hikes can be pretty demanding. But overall, the combination of the incredible views of the surrounding mountains, pleasant hikes and ancient archeological sites make it a really special place to visit.
Viktoryia P — Google review
Why?? how?? who?? so many questions about this place and not many answers just theories and that's what makes it even more interesting. So simple yet amusing, that was tierradentro national park for me it was a magical place maybe cause I prefer to visit a park over the "biggest badest" shopping mall. Now when you visit this park go with an open mind cause it might become very repetitive, and keep in mind that there's different areas that you need to hike to. The hike to the Alto the aguacate Is pretty steep and on the hard side if you start at the museum, there no obvious stairs or path in the beginning, after you cross the bridge just go up, no left or right but up, once on top you'll be rewarded with amazing 360 views of the whole area, and don't forget to bring lots of water and snacks.
Carlos S — Google review
Nice, intersting place, we recomending to take local taxi (after ticket office) and start from top of hill. Perfect walking trip.
Audrius S — Google review
A bit off the beaten track. I took a car from La Plata. A bit tough to explore physically, so do bring sturdy shoes and walking sticks. The tombs themselves are fascinating. Some require a flashlight to explore. Staff were helpful, though a bit of Spanish goes a long way. Take care abd enjoy, this is a unique experience.
