Park
Guayaquil Historical Park is a picturesque park surrounded by charming historic pastel-colored houses and features a small zoo. The Wildlife area spans 4 hectares and is home to over 50 species of birds, mammals, and reptiles living in their natural mangrove forest habitat. Visitors can stroll along raised boardwalk paths for close contact with the ecosystem without disturbing the animals.
We stayed at the park hotel. It was really lovely. There are not a lot of activities, but looking at the water, animals, and old buildings is relaxing. The morning breakfast in the courtyard is a nice way to start the day.
Heather O — Google review
We visited the Guayaquil Historical Park and were absolutely impressed! It’s a truly atmospheric place where you can learn about Ecuador’s history and culture — and even feel like you’ve stepped back in time. We especially loved the area with traditional architecture and actors in historical costumes, perfect for photos. The park is well maintained, full of greenery, animals, and engaging exhibits. A great spot for both tourists and local families. Highly recommended!
Ivan L — Google review
A lovely place to visit in the centre of Guayaquil. Went on a hot sunny day but the walks offer plenty of shade. Nice variety of animals to see including crocodiles, caiman, parrots, monkeys and much more. $4 for an adult to enter.
Richard N — Google review
Beautiful place! The walk was nice, specially under the trees and it was nice to see most of the animals and some being fed. Also the historical buildings were open and gave us a look of the old city houses and style of living, totally worth it!
Erick&Lexi A — Google review
Loved this place. Our guide was great, and he took the time to make the experience even more fulfilling.
Henry — Google review
Poor animal conditions: Many animals are kept in very small enclosures, which raises serious concerns about their welfare. Numerous birds are also confined in cages, which diminishes the educational and natural value of the experience. • Entrance fee: The entry fee is $5 for foreigners, which is relatively low, but still worth noting for future visitors. • Unsafe natural area: The supposedly natural section by the water is difficult to access and potentially dangerous, with poorly maintained or slippery paths. • Pollution: The water in this area appears polluted, negatively affecting both the environment and the visitor experience.
Charline D — Google review
Really nice place for a weekend stroll. Get to know some of the local fauna, history, and culture (some food too). Fun for the whole family. Ask for the montubio show, funny stuff. There is a really fancy restaurant and hotel inside the park. Don't forget to try local sweets and treats.

Parque Seminario

Park
Nature & Parks
Gardens
Parque Seminario, also known as Parque Bolivar or Parque de los Iguanas, is a historic 17th-century park in Guayaquil. It features sculptures, an octagonal pavilion, the Palace of Guayaquil and the Cathedral of Guayaquil. The park is famous for its resident iguanas that freely roam around, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to interact with them and take photos.
Semanario park is directly in front of the cathedral, which is worth a 10min free visit in itself.  The park is most famous for the 100 very tame large green iguanas that live here. There are signs posted do not touch and do not feed; there are guards to enforce the rules. But enforcement seemed random, if you are determined it is quite possible to feed and handle the lizards, they are very docile. But you might get caught and you might get bit.
Jay A — Google review
Parque Seminario, also known as Iguana Park, is a small but beautiful green space in the center of Guayaquil. The park is well-kept, with shaded benches, trees, and a calm atmosphere that feels like a peaceful break from the busy city. The highlight is, of course, the iguanas that roam freely. They climb the trees, lounge on the grass, and are surprisingly calm around people, making it easy to take pictures or simply observe them up close. What makes this park special is the mix of history and charm with the unique experience of sharing the space with dozens of iguanas. Families, tourists, and locals all enjoy it, and the environment feels welcoming. The gardens and walkways are clean and inviting, and the presence of the iguanas gives the park a memorable character that you don’t see anywhere else. Overall, Parque Seminario is a must-see spot in Guayaquil—not because of its size, but because of its atmosphere and the one-of-a-kind experience it offers.
SRS — Google review
We visited Parque Seminario during our trip to Guayaquil and really enjoyed it. It’s a small, charming park right in the city center, full of life with free-roaming iguanas, small tortoises, and birds. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming — a perfect little break from the busy streets. Definitely worth a quick visit!
Anastasia B — Google review
We had a great day here. Walked through the park to the waterfront. The iguanas were all over the park. Some people chose to feed them. It created a lot of excitement t with the iguanas!
Michael O — Google review
Everyone was siding in the experience and having a good time. There was a gentleman there that helped take pictures and didn’t ask for anything (although I did tip), and there were prime selling Romain lettuce to give to the iguanas. We really enjoyed it.
Waldo J — Google review
This park does not disappoint. There are tons of iguanas and turtles everywhere in the park. Watch out for a bit of iguana droppings coming out of the trees. Overall it's a must visit when in Guayaquil. Easy to get to and it feels relatively safe here during the day.
Nav S — Google review
Great to a quick stop! The park itself is pretty, but the main attractions are the iguanas that reside there! They are not afraid of you at all, and if you bring a banana along, then expect to make some friends!
Jennifer C — Google review
This park is really sold on the fact that there are iguanas there, but to be honest, there aren't too many and they're not particularly big or impressive. Still, it's a nice park and there are ponds, where iguanas mix with fish and turtles. The added draw for this park is that there is also the Metropolitan Cathedral right next to it, which is pretty impressive in it's own right.

I feel safe here. I came for a quick walk and appreciated the secure entrance and exit, with many police officers and security personnel present. The area offers a nice view, along with a market selling snacks, ice cream, and water. The river view is beautiful.

Strongly recommended if you are looking for some sightseeing and great spot, this Malecon has all you might have look into Guayaquil in one place, also there are different places to grag food or snacks, activities might very from walking along the pier to ride a pirate boat, there is also a wheel of fortune and a dinasour theme park.

The Malecon is a fine, popular walk along the river with a good amount of shade. Security seemed pretty good at all entrances. Many families were there. We felt safe and secure while there during the day. There are rides and small vendors along the malecon. More upscale restaurants with river views are also available. There are plenty of good spots for pictures.
Marc — Google review
if anybody tells you there is no museum worth visiting in Guayaquil they are wrong. This place offers some modernistic art, installations, etc. which I don't need. In the last room they show a very impressive collection of pre-columbian ceramics: amazing. These objects don't need any explanation. They speak by themselves.

Looks like a fun park but it was CLOSED today on Saturday, August 22, 2020. We walked the perimeter and took some pics. They had barb wire and fences all around it to keep people out, doesn't look like it will open soon. Too bad 😱. There are two streams that cut thru the park, one is nice, one is filthy - see the scary pic where they merge.

I adore this park! It is really big and you can see important places from other countries! Also, you can drive a boat through all the park.

Archeological complex El Brujo

Archaeological museum
Museums
Ancient, Moche-era archeological complex with ruins, art, wall designs, a mummy & various artifacts.
We started our trip at 10 am at Trujillo center and finished around 3:30pm.The pieces of art is great . The lady of chaos is the unique piece in the north of Peru in such a great preservation, showing the importance of this woman in that place. You will need to pay s/10 for entry to the museum. I will recommend to accept only payments in order to avoid problems to people who don't carry cash. Toilets very clean and everything well organized.
Henreli C — Google review
I spent some really interesting hours in the archaeological complex El Brujo. It covers thousands of years of uninterrupted human occupation. The complex is situated about 70 km north of Trujillo. It is about a 45 minutes drive from Trujillo and absolutely worth the trip. The latest excavations carried out at the pyramid called Huaca Cao have revealed a ceremonial site that is 1800 years old. It was built with the intention to bury a royal person. They found a mummified young female person. The condition of the mummy was so good that the could see tattooes on different parts of her body. We could see the body in the museum. She was called: La dama de Cao, (The Lady of Cao) and we could see a lot of artefacts and jewellery. After seeing the museum, we walked around in the huaca, and it was really interesting. This was the Moche culture, and I recommend reading about the Moche before you visit El Brujo. And it is also interesting to make a stop in the nearby village Magdalena de Cao. Lots of nice paintings on the walls of the houses.
Alfhild H — Google review
I most see if you already saw Chan Chan, Huaca del sol and Huaca de la Luna. They have a " mummified woman ruler". The site is one hour away from the city of Trujillo but the trip is worth it.
Gian S — Google review
Awesome site! Didn’t see a witch or wizard but the paintings and walls were very impressive! One of the better sites around Trujillo, and quite straightforward to reach without a tour, just leave yourself plenty of time for the return as the colectivo was slow to fill back from Magdalena
Tristan R — Google review
The archaeological site of El Brujo is absolutely amazing! The ruins are impressive and the museums are very well organized and informative. This was an important ceremonial complex of the Moche culture, dating back to around 100–750 AD. You can still see the remains of pyramids, temples, and incredible murals that tell stories of rituals and daily life. One of the highlights is learning about the Señora de Cao, a female ruler discovered here, whose tomb and artifacts are beautifully displayed in the museum. A fascinating place that combines history, culture, and stunning views of the coast—definitely worth the visit!
Adrian H — Google review
This place was see inspiring considering it was built 1000 years before the Incas. You could easily spend all day walking around
David M — Google review
Not quite as impressive size wise as some of the other archeological sites we had visited. However the number of tombs discovered so far really give an insight to the changing burial techniques over time. A lack of funds has temporarily stopped any further excavation. If you visit Peru it is still worth the effort.
David F — Google review
Pyramids nowhere near as impressive as later Inca, Azrec or Mayan structures and they have been greatly eroded by rain. However the excavations show an advanced culture fir ghe time. The museum gives an excellent interpretation and there is a room full of gold clothing, ornaments etc that the Spaniards missed giving us all a better insight into the distant. past

The ruins are part of a larger adventure that includes nearby sites like the Huacas del Sol y de la Luna and Huaca de Bruja. For surfers, the proximity to Huanchaco's renowned surf makes it an appealing destination.
I can't believe Chan Chan isn't more well known and visited. It's an amazing archeological site with interesting history. If you enjoyed Machu Picchu, the history and culture, then make the trip north to Trujillo and see Chan Chan. It's a different culture and history, but no less interesting.

It was great and really interesting and if you have kids then they would be really engaged if you hire a tour guide
Gabriel — Google review
Certainly Chan Chan is one of the historically highly important archeological sites in the country. However, from a visitor's perspective the site has a few drawbacks. First, there is very little to no information at the archeological spots (only some in the museum). At the main site you can not even tell what is "original" and what was reconstructed. Second, the complex is large and scattered across the area (the ticket covers four spots) - you either need a driver or be prepared to walk quiet a lot. There is also no information on where to start and which route to take between the four spots. Of you habe the time, pay this site a visit and decide for yourself. Bit if you have to choose, I would personally recommend Huaca de Luna instead for a half-day trip.

Absolutely impressive site! The ruins of Chan Chan are huge and give you a real sense of the scale of this ancient city. It’s very well maintained and easy to explore, with detailed explanations about the culture and history of the Chimú civilization. Walking through the palaces and seeing the geometric and animal designs on the walls is truly fascinating. A must-visit if you’re in Trujillo!
Adrian H — Google review
I think the chan chan site itself was not as impressive as I originally thought. Not a lot of parts of the chan chan ancient city was open to public so the visit to the chan chan site itself was not very long. There are not a lot of description or reconstruction pictures shown on site so it all depends on the guide. Our guide was excellent so it was ok but the site itself was not well presented. It was also not very crowded during our visit. Must visit the museum beforehand or else you won’t know what is happening out there.

This visit is a must go !! I definitely recommend to visit this place and to take a guide (60 soles). With a guide it is much more easy to project oneself in the culture and lifestyle of the Chimu and understand the interaction between different cultures in Peru (Moche, Chimu, Inka). Without a guide, you won’t be able to catch all the details and subtleties of this place!
Patricia C — Google review
I recommend to take a tour to get information about the place. We didn't get a guide but it worse to pay for it

Awe inspiring place for its huge scale more than anything. The mud carvings are attractive and lots of conservation and repair work is ongoing. The museum is a little small and dated but the city makes up for it.

The Plaza de Armas of Trujillo is a vibrant and beautifully landscaped square that serves as the heart of this historic city. Celebrating Trujillo's independence with its striking central sculpture, the monument to Liberty crafted by German sculptor Edmund Moeller, it draws visitors in with its charm. This plaza is not just a picturesque spot; it's also surrounded by stunning architecture featuring colorful facades that reflect the city's rich history from both the Viceroyalty and Republican eras.
One of the nicest plazas in Peru. It’s also the cleanest. Sunsets and early evenings in the plaza are beautiful. All the glowing bikes, toy cars and other neon-colored light up toys just made the place so much more beautiful.

Very cool colourful city centre but a lot of people and cars all the time

Really cool place in the center of Trujillo. Safe, lots of families around and security is solid. The architecture is really beautiful and it is a nice space, and there are also many great restaurants within one block of the plaza itself. Must-visit place if you’re visiting Trujillo or Huanchaco.

Beautiful main square! A vibrant and historic place surrounded by colonial architecture and colorful buildings. The central monument is impressive, and the atmosphere is lively both during the day and in the evening. A great spot to start exploring Trujillo and enjoy the local vibe.

A pleasant surprise, an architectural treat lots of beautiful old colonial administrative buildings around this huge square, clean and hassle free. Some nice restaurants and coffee shops around the square to definitely worth a visit.

La Huaca del Sol is a significant archaeological site in the region, built by the Moche civilization. It served as a royal residence, ceremony site, and burial chamber. The complex includes the Temples of the Sun and the Moon, with the latter featuring phenomenal multicolored friezes. While the larger Huaca del Sol is closed to visitors, La Huaca de la Luna offers well-preserved structures and remarkable polychrome murals on its multi-story wall.
So you really should come and join a guided tour (available in Spanish, English and French every hour or so), we did almost 2 hours and it was possibly the best pyramids in Peru we have visited (mostly thanks to the University that runs it). The explanations were really good, the route was nice, lots of shade and lots of conserved murals and structures to see. It's about 20 soles in an Uber from the city, 10 soles entry (+5 soles for the museum) and a guide is by donation (we gave 15 soles each).
Matthew B — Google review
Very interesting site! We had a lovely tour guide (sadly I don’t quite remember here name, Even?). The tours are free on a donation basis. They have tours in English and Spanish with the last English tour being at 3.15pm. Only annoying and rude thing was that the ticket seller sold us museum tickets even though it was only open for 8 more min (until 4pm)! I understand that the site needs money but this is not the way to get it. If you’re in Trujillo you should definitely check out this site!

The "Temple of the Sun" Huace del Sol is another Pyramid-style ceremonial place of the Moche civilization. Located close to the Temple of the Moon, just outside of Trujillo. Unfortunately the Spanish Colonial Forces destroyed a lot of this site after their search for gold. The site itself still is an impressive reminder on the high capabilities in architecture of pre-Colombian civilizations.
Tee K — Google review
Great to see the sun temple and be part of a tour group where the pictures / significance is explained. Some places were badly destroyed but you can see they are actively trying to keep what is left preserved.
Kara H — Google review
I had never heard of this civilization. Well preserved tiles, especially considering they are mud brick. The people who lived there were some blood-thirsty MFers.
Scott M — Google review
I wound up walking in since I took a Moche colectivo instead of one that comes direct to the museum. That worked well because the onsite tours do not visit Huaca del Sol. They go through Huaca de Luna. There are signs indicating that you shouldn't attempt to climb the pyramid. It was nice that I could see it up close as I walked the rest of the way to the fee station.

Amazing place, museum was informative and had explanations in English. Our English guide Rosemary was really good and the guide service was included in the entrance fee (10 soles for site and 5 for museum). Definitely recommend thoroughly enjoyed.

Nestled amidst the snow-capped mountains, this high-altitude lake offers a plethora of recreational activities such as kayaking, boating, hiking and camping. The area is renowned for its breathtaking views and popular treks including the Laguna 69 and Paron Lake hikes which are doable in a day.
It's a gorgeous, breath taking colorful lake in the Andes mountains of Ancash, Perú. You must book a tour with a local agency in Huaraz and they'll provide transportation and guidance for 50 soles. You must pay another 30 for the entrance fee. If you plan to go to other places of the national park, you should buy the 3 day pass for 60. The hike can take from 2-3 hours on the way up and 1 to 2 hours coming back. Try to get used to the height before going here because you'll get sick otherwise. Also, take snacks and lunch with you since there are no restaurants around. There are more lakes on the way so have your camera ready!!
Diego R — Google review
Fantastic scenery. The hike for fit people is a maximum of three hours up and two down. Unfit Instagrammers who haven’t acclimated should have second thoughts. Indeed there were 7 people on our minibus who were not fit enough to make it to the lagoon.
SEB W — Google review
The ascent takes on average 2.5-3 hours. It’s a fairly simple hike, not too steep but requires a decent level of fitness. It’s 7 km each way, and it’s a point to point route so no chance of getting lost. The views are absolutely breathtaking along the way, and there is a smaller body of water called Consolation lake for those who cannot reach Lagoon 69 within the time limit given. Ideally time to acclimate before the hike is recommended as it can be difficult otherwise. Luckily the day we hiked was quiet of crowds but there was many a wild bull roaming but they are completely placid. Small restaurant selling drinks and snacks and toilets for 1 sol at the beginning of the trek. The road in and out was actually horrendous and so much worse than the hike itself so prepare. If you get motion sickness this might be an issue.

Quite the hike to get there, but well worth it. Nice coffee & biscuits in the hut when finished as well! No point in uploading photos - you know what it looks like! Amazing.

One of the best things I've seen on my trip around south America. I had been told good things about laguna 69 and I was not disappointed. The scenery was stunning and I was amazed at how quite and tranquil it was. I'd definitely recommend coming here as it's such an stunning bit of nature!

LAGUNA 69 has the most amazing views. Your trek to this lake will give your eyes the beauty of creeks, rivers, cascades, waterfalls and fauna of the area. Get ready to trek 5.1 miles to reach it, but the journey is so worth it. Enjoy the cool breeze and the sun rays of the day! 🇵🇪 ☀️ 🏔 💕 🗻 🌄

Absolutely fantastic - the kind of places that is definitely better irl than in any instagram adultered post. The hike up is ok, the views are beautiful, and the last bit psycho torture :) but the moment you see the plaque with the name of the lagoon and the lagoon behind it.. it is just the reason everyone hikes. We were lucky with the weather, but only for a few minutes. The clouds settled in quite fast. If you go on an organised tour from Huaraz, get ready for a long three-hour drive to go and another 3 hours back, with half of it in very bad and bumpy roads.

Did it in mid March 2025. Collectivo rides were organized by a tour company through my hostel (Alpes Huaraz). 3 hours drive with breakfast stop. Hike up support challenging due to altitude. Rainy, cold, muddy. Check out the AllTrails app with it's altitude profile to get a clearer idea. Well worth it.

Huascaran, the highest mountain in Peru, is a twin-summit peak located in the Andes of west-central Peru. Rising to 22,205 feet above sea level, it is a popular destination for mountaineers and climbers. The most well-known itinerary to climb Huascaran starts from Huaraz and passes through Musho before reaching the Base Camp.
One of the most beautiful places, clean air and pure water coming down from it full of minerals. Highly recommend because it's not crowded
Luz Z — Google review

Jane. B — Google review
Mount Huascarán is the highest peak in Peru and one of the most majestic in the entire Andes mountain range. Located within Huascarán National Park in the Ancash region, it rises to an impressive 6,768 meters (22,205 feet) above sea level, making it the tallest point in Peru and the second highest in South America, just behind Aconcagua in Argentina. Beyond its geographical significance, Huascarán holds deep symbolic value for Peruvians and is a revered destination for mountaineers, nature lovers, and landscape photographers. The mountain consists of two main summits: Huascarán Norte (6,654 m) and Huascarán Sur (6,768 m), the latter being the highest. Surrounded by glacial valleys, turquoise lagoons, and snow-covered peaks, the scenery is breathtaking. The picturesque town of Huaraz serves as the base for many hikes and expeditions and offers stunning views of the mountain. The region is also home to unique Andean biodiversity, with flora and fauna specially adapted to high-altitude conditions. Climbing Huascarán is a serious challenge, suitable only for experienced climbers. The extreme altitude, unstable glaciers, and rapidly changing weather demand technical skills and physical preparation. However, for those who prefer to admire the mountain from a distance, there are numerous trekking routes nearby—such as those leading to the Llanganuco Lakes—that offer spectacular views. Whether for adventure, contemplation, or a connection with Andean nature, Mount Huascarán stands as a towering symbol of beauty, strength, and awe.

The Main Square of Huaraz, also known as Plaza de Armas, is a charming public space adorned with topiary and a central fountain. Visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant local culture by exploring bustling markets offering handmade textiles and traditional crafts while savoring local cuisine. The square provides opportunities to take pictures with alpacas or llamas and gather information about tours.
This plaza is a great place to come and be around (and watch) people while you are in Huaraz! The backdrop of the park is a great place for taking photos to remember your visit. There is a lot of attention paid to maintaining the green spaces and there are people watching to make sure that visitors don't cross fences and step on the plants. For the month and a half that we stayed in Huaraz, there were so many events going on that I can bet you'll catch something while you're there, especially if you come on the weekend.

"The Plaza de Armas in Huaraz is such a charming spot! It’s surrounded by colorful gardens, tall palm trees, and has amazing views of the snow-capped mountains in the distance. Locals gather here to relax, chat, and enjoy the sunshine, and there’s always something going on – from street vendors selling snacks to musicians playing traditional tunes. It’s the perfect place to sit on a bench, people-watch, and soak up the atmosphere before heading to explore the nearby cafes and shops

Churup Lake

Lake
Nature & Parks
Bodies of Water
Nestled at an altitude of 4,480 meters, Churup Lake is renowned for its stunning clear, blue-green waters. The hike to the lake takes about two hours and can be quite challenging due to steep sections where metal chains are used for assistance. However, the breathtaking beauty of the lake makes it all worthwhile. Accessible via a colectivo to Pitec and a subsequent trek, this adventure offers diverse landscapes that only get more captivating as you ascend.
This is a location about 40 minutes by motorcycle from the center of Huaraz. You can stop at the parking lot and start climbing the mountain. Most of the path consists of stairs; it's not exactly a trail for easy walking, but rather steps. You'll climb the steps for about 90 minutes to reach the destination. In terms of difficulty, it's not easy—it's quite challenging. At an altitude of over 4000 meters, each step is very tough, exhausting, and requires good physical preparation and a strong spirit. However, when you arrive, you'll find it very worthwhile. Up there, you'll find a waterfall and a very beautiful lake. You can bring food for a picnic here. The descent is easier, but be very careful. This is a very popular spot, and there were quite a few people there on the day I visited. The entrance fee is 30 sol per person, and parking is free. They have no food and drink to sell up there!
Hương T — Google review
Beautiful spot for an easy acclimatisation hike 6km return trip. You can get there using a colectivo bus.
Catalina S — Google review
A good acclimatization hike, take an 1-hr collectivo from huaraz to reach the trail head at Pitec, 20 soles round trip. Some steep parts of the path have cable installed, quite fun to climb.
Tian W — Google review
Laguna Churup, standing at 4486 meters above sea level, is one of the most notable one-day hikes from Huaraz. With easy access via public transportation or taxi, it takes just about 40 minutes to reach the starting point, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the city before embarking on the adventure. The hike begins in Pitec, at 3830 meters (the boundary of Huascarán National Park). It is a steep path requiring constant physical effort, including a rocky section where you need to climb using a metal chain. However, there is an alternative route to the left of the final stretch for those who prefer to avoid the climb. Although the entire trail covers only 3.3 km (each way), it is technically more challenging than the famous Laguna 69. Therefore, it is important not to underestimate this hike and to acclimatize properly by undertaking easier hikes near Huaraz. Upon reaching Laguna Churup, you will be rewarded with the sight of its slender, crystal-clear emerald waters. As an added bonus, you can visit Laguna Churupita, located at 4600 meters, from Laguna Churup, requiring just an extra 2 hours of planning.
Stv R — Google review
Stunning views, even with cloudy and misty weather. Go up with a colectivo (ask around where to find it) and they will take you up; they will be able to take you down again, you just have to wait for them to come back to the top. It can take sometime for it to depart as it needs to be full, both ways, so it can also be quite an uncomfortable ride as it will literally be bursting with local people going up and down the hills. Important note: despite your hostel maybe not recommending that you take a guide, please do. It is very important to know your way, especially when getting closer to the lake. We went up with reduced visibility and rainy weather. You have to literally climb some of the sections with the help of chains on very very slippery rocks (see pics and video); it is extremely dangerous and in any other country the path would be closed during rainy weather. At the end of the path, there are no more indications. We reached the lake out of luck and guidance of other trekkers, via an irregular path since we could not find the way to the miradoro. Gorgeous, but adrenaline inducing
Nuno L — Google review

Laguna Churup is so worth the visit! Taking about 2 hours for someone who has recently arrived in huaraz and is not used to the altitude, and perhaps shorter for someone who has been here a little longer. It's not an easy walk, but just wait till you arrive at the lake! And adventurous hike, at parts using metal chains to grab and pull yourself up as its steep, however if you dont want to go through these parts, you can take the left path before so. The lake is a green and blue colour, it is amazing from all parts!
Daniela M — Google review

Chavín de Huántar Archaeological Monument

Mentioned on

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Chavin de Huantar is a significant archaeological area that contains artifacts and structures from the pre-Incan Chavín culture. It is considered the most captivating site of Peru's MidLate Formative Period, dating back to around 1200-500 BC. The ceremonial center boasts impressive temple-like constructions above ground and intricate underground passages illuminated with modern technology.
This is a fantastic experience to see the site. 15 soles entry. A few hours from Huaraz by public transport (15 soles each way). Caution: during the long often unnerving, winding route, you reach high altitudes and must take a day or two to adjust to elevation before attempting to cross the mountain. A museum with objects taken from the site is on the other side of town. The site dates from 1500BC, and has been used since long before, though signage explains most the main structures are 800s BC. They do not allow you to climb most stairs or explore a significant portion of the site, and some paths are controlled for continued excavations. You mostly see things from the other side of a fence. But in some moments you get to interact with the site and go down passageways etcetera. The environment is gorgeous, as you're surrounded 360° by mountains. Don't miss out heading down to the creek that surrounds the site on two sides to enjoy the tranquility by the edge of the flowing stream still going 3000 years later.

A long bus ride from Huaraz (over 2 hours each way) but an incredible experience! We travelled through farmland and into the stunning Huascaran National park. Stopped at a glacial lake (has the second scariest toilet in Peru) and drove some treacherous roads, but the site is a masterpiece of pre-Incan architecture and religious symbolism. We checked out the Lanzón Monolith, underground galleries which we able to walk through, ceremonial plazas and intricate stone carvings. The archeological site is truly amazing but be prepared for a long drive.

Fascinating historical site to discover the Chavin people. You’ll need a tour guide to get the most out of it and understand the surroundings. The signs are in Spanish and English. The most fascinating part of the site are the underground tunnels. Several of the tunnels don’t allow photos so the place is even more interesting than the photos you see online would suggest.

I can't give this site less than 3 stars because even though it was closed, I'm fairly confident I will rate it 5 stars if/when I revisit and have the opportunity to go inside with a tour guide. Unesco world heritage site 330. Be careful visiting as they seem to close randomly and have weird visiting hours/days. May require a reservation/appointment. 2022.08.20 0429 PET-RMN update: Interesting, I didn't read my own note as we went there on Tuesday 2022.08.16 (~8 hour drive by car from Lima) and it was closed due to a recent landslide in the area (~2 weeks prior). We did not call in advance or attempt to make reservations. However, we were able to see the u shaped complex, main temple (from the outside), and sunken plaza. We could also see the fanged deity from pretty close, taking pictures from over the wall. The fanged deity is much larger than I thought. I anticipated that it would be around 6-8 inches in diameter but it was more like 3-4 feet in diameter. If we have the opportunity, we should revisit to take the tour and see the museum located in the town of Chavin, as it was also closed. Tickets/tours include the ability to go inside the temple and view the several meter high stone rock pillar (obelisk) with partially transformed fanged deity carvings.

Located near Yungay, approximately 50 kilometers north of Huaraz, visitors can reach the glacier by taking buses or shared taxis from Huaraz to Yungay and then continuing with an organized tour or hiring a local guide. The high-altitude location at over 5,000 meters makes it ideal for acclimatization.
We went here on the 5th day of staying in the Huaraz area. We were a little afraid of the altitude over 5000 m, but honestly this minihike was a lot easier than for example Laguna 69, despite being 500 metres higher 😅 The glacier is beautiful and the surrounding area is even more beautiful!

The place is not bad. Glacier is small but still okay. This place has a high altitude (>5.000 mdpl) so good for acclimation. However, the tour we joined was dissapointing. They stopped in an expensive restaurants, twice, each 1 hour. Meanwhile, we only got a bit of time to enjoy the glaciers (around 20 mins). The tour guide was so defensive and she speaks 0 english. It’s more a scam than a proper tour.

Amazing place for a day tour! It's pretty high ( 5,000 meters), so it's good for acclimation.
Karin N — Google review
The glacier was great, we enjoyed the trip. Please do not take the horses, they are mistreated. We saw horses with their hooves tied together struggling to walk around as they were finishing the day.
Peter A — Google review
I enjoyed this day tour. The route offered stunning mountain scenery. Those arriving in Huaraz might consider acclimatizing before this tour - which I didn't - but the beautiful sights still made it worthwhile.

Wonderf place, the whole way is pretty, a pretty rough start in the climbing a bit hard to breath but do it slowly

A nature monster at 5000 mtrs!! Thouhg I was a little bit upset because of the aims to turn it in a more accessible spot. Anyway, clearly deserves a visit.

It takes only 40 minutes to walk to the glacier. But it's a bit disappointing.

Beautifully renovates. Great family vacation option. Stayed at the Camelot hotel with a gorgeous view of the ocean. Sunsets from there are breathtaking. Staff is supper friendly and goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome.

This is the Disney Land of Peru. If are in Chancay, come and have some fine. Awesome staff. Lots of activities and performance.

Good things first: + Lots of variety + Lots of fun + Many things to take photos of + Some animals + Great view of the ocean + Very interesting entertainment Down sides: - Pool closed - A little too commercialized - Sometimes too crowded - Some very poor maintenance in some parts - Would be better if they hid their speaker devices in walls instead of having a huge chunky boombox with sound coming through it, in a setting intended to be historical The show with the dancers and magicians was one of the highlights for me. I also loved that I could take photos with some wild birds.
Ice W — Google review
Crowded and disorderly. The building was incomplete. They had living eagles tethered to trainers so that people could have their photos taken for s/ 10, but the animals where in distress. The food at the resturant was decent and the haunted house was short but well done. This is an affordable place to take kids but I would say that it is a 4th rate attraction at best

Wow where do I begin...this place was just way too amazing for words. I absolutely loved it. I want to go back already! So basically through every area is a theme throughout history with actors interacting with small groups on tours throughout. Some themes include Peru, Egypt, Camelot, Aztec, Babylon, Greece, Rome, and many many more. There are too many to really remember to be honest. My favorite was Egypt. And being able to see Anubis I was just in awe. I can't obviously ever go to the real Egypt so this will be the closest I can get for now ☺️ The only major complaints I have are there is a TON of stairs...oh my gosh! I am unsure if we just missed where the elevators were to go back downstairs or if they were going for the "old castle" theme and there are none. Next time we go we are having my daughter either walk on her own or ride on our shoulders. Also we went to a beautiful restaurant and they had cats meandering around while we ate. It was kind of weird and I'm not that into cats. Make sure at least they aren't where your diners are eating at least please! Among all the attractions there you can also: *Swim: (they have a huge pool I think it's 10 soles a person to get in) take a swimming suit and change of clothes! *Shop: there are many artisan places to shop inside and souvenir shops as well. I love that about Peru, support the artisans and small business! *Eat: there are a few restaurants inside you can pay in the entrance to make a reservation. (People outside are too pushy and it freaked me out they practically swamped us in the car yelling at us with thier menu papers) *I think there is also a hotel. I would love to stay there. *Parking: it's 10 soles a day total and they only take cash (just a heads up) You can also hold a hawk for 10 soles and take pictures with it. That was so cool and it was such a pretty bird too! Overall it was a great experience. I can't wait to go back!

Lima Main Square

Lima Main Square, also known as Plaza de Armas or Plaza Mayor, is a historic and iconic public space located in the heart of Lima's historic center. It holds great significance as the birthplace of Lima and played a pivotal role in Peru's history, being the site where Jose de San Martin proclaimed independence for the country.
Lima Main Square is a stunning blend of colonial architecture, vibrant energy, and rich history. The colorful buildings, the Cathedral, and the Government Palace make it picture-perfect from every angle. The square feels safe, well-maintained, and lively with street performers and locals relaxing. It’s a great place to walk around, take photos, or just sit and soak in the atmosphere. A must-visit if you’re in Lima!
Purba D — Google review
Nice square with colonial style and architecture, typical for similar plazas actor South America. There are some important buildings around to see. In principal, this is the most worth seeing site of the old part of the city, which otherwise doen not have much to offer.
Konstantinos K — Google review
Beautiful central area with lots of interesting sites in a walkable area including Convent of Santo Domingo, the Catacombs, many shops and restaurants. Great just to walk down the streets, grab an ice cream or a cocktail or check out the many vendors offering everything from alpaca clothing to T-shirts. All around the area are little rounded statuettes of women. I found one covered, instead of colorful paints, with reflective surface. One large stone commemorates the original Inca governing people of the area. Beautiful buildings with a variety of architectures. And the gorgeous tall water fountain in the very center of the square.
L S — Google review
An impressive square with many historic buildings. When I was there, I enjoyed not only that, but also the fantastic parade with a wide variety of traditional costumes and music. It was wonderful to see and experience.

I recently traveled from Cusco to Lima, Peru, and was met with widespread protests. The police presence was heavy, with officers carrying full sets of weapons. The streets were blocked with trash and feces, making it difficult to navigate. To stay safe, we kept our distance and observed from afar. Areas like Miraflores and Barranco felt more secure than the city center.
SPICY — Google review
We spent a leisurely day exploring the heart of Lima and made our way to the city’s beautiful main square—Plaza Mayor, also known as Plaza de Armas. This historic square is the birthplace of Lima, founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535, and has remained the political and cultural center of the city ever since. Surrounding the square are several of Lima’s most important colonial-era buildings, including the Government Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Municipal Palace, and the Lima Cathedral. The blend of Spanish colonial architecture and vibrant local activity gives the square a timeless charm. While we were there, we were fortunate to witness a Catholic procession passing through the square—an experience that brought the city’s deep-rooted religious traditions to life. The area is perfect for capturing great photos, soaking in the local atmosphere, and appreciating Lima’s rich history and living culture.
Andrew G — Google review
Impressive architecture especially beautiful at night when the buildings are lit up at night. A visit into the cathedral is a must. The third Sunday in each month, there is a worthwhile tattoo by the Peruan military guard troop in the presidential courtyard.

The Larco Museum, located in the district of Pueblo Libre, is a former mansion turned into a museum that showcases an extensive collection of pre-Columbian artifacts. The museum offers a comprehensive overview of 5,000 years of Peruvian history, art, and culture through its well-curated galleries. Visitors can explore ancient ceramics and textiles while strolling through lush gardens. Guided tours are available for deeper insights into the significance of the exhibits.
This museum isn't very big but it has amazing pieces. I would really recommend a guided tour which is offered at an extra 10 soles - it really does a much better job of explaining what we are looking at. Very interesting pieces divided in 3 areas: the main museum (perhaps 5-6 rooms), the erotic gallery, and visible storage. The surroundings are also very nice and there is a great fancy restaurant too. A big tip would be to come early: we got there at 10-ish and had a tour just for both of us; by the time we were going out there were lines for tickets and the museum was very crowded.
Catarina — Google review
Beautiful museum of artifacts from ancient Peruvian civilizations, including ceramics, textiles, and metalwork. The exhibits are nicely curated, and the collection is huge, but for an entry fee of 50 soles I would've expected a bit more variety and some other content than just constant display cases with accompanying text. Very interesting, but after a while it gets a little boring. Beside the main museum there's a separate exhibit for "erotic" artifacts, mainly pottery portraying sexually explicit scenes. It's included in the main ticket price. There's also a souvenir shop and a restaurant on site. There are explanatory texts in several languages for all exhibits, so English speakers for example can easily follow along. There's also an audio guide available, but this we didn't try. We spent approximately two hours walking through the museum, stopping briefly at most exhibits.

The Larco Museum in Lima is one of Peru’s finest museums and a must-visit for anyone interested in history and culture. Housed in an 18th-century colonial mansion, it features an outstanding collection of pre-Columbian art, including ceramics, textiles, metalwork, and jewelry from ancient civilizations like the Moche, Nazca, and Inca. One of its highlights is the world-famous gallery of erotic pottery, which is both fascinating and unique. The museum also offers beautifully curated exhibits with clear explanations in multiple languages, making it easy to understand Peru’s rich cultural heritage. The gardens and café add to the experience, creating a relaxing atmosphere after exploring the galleries. Perfect for culture lovers, history buffs, and anyone wanting a deeper understanding of Peru before (or after) visiting its archaeological sites.

An excellent way to familiarise yourself with the various cultures of Peru, both Incan and Pre-Incan. Lots to see so probably allow around 90 minutes. It is slightly cheaper to book a ticket in advance online than pay at the museum. The small gardens are very colourful. Worth going here and combining with the National archaeological and anthropology museum, which is about a 20 minute walk away.

This is a must to visit if you make it to Lima Peru. There are about 45k of antiques found in different sites in the whole Peru. They belong to the pre Inca culture. It is so surprised to see how well they all were preserved after 2000 or 5000 years underground. I did not have much time there for the last visit but next time when I come back I think I will spend a whole day here. Highly recommended.

🌟 An unforgettable experience—leave yourself plenty of time! Visited on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 with reservations from 5–7pm. We arrived early but were overdue for dinner, so we hit the restaurant before exploring the museum. Though that left us only about an hour inside. Despite the short visit, every detail of the museum, restaurant, and grounds impressed me. 🍽️ The restaurant is beautifully designed—definitely a bit upscale for my “hole-in-the-wall” tastes, but still worth the stop. Prices are on the higher side. 🌺 The grounds are stunning, with vibrant flowers everywhere and photo-worthy views around every corner. 🏺 The museum exhibits are top-notch, A+. What can be said about this collection that hasn't already been said? The quality, detail, and condition of these artifacts that are hundreds and thousands of years old, are second to none. Simply extraordinary. I'd recommend 3-5 hours or more if you really want to absorb and appreciate everything. So I'll definitely be returning for another visit as 1–2 hours isn’t nearly enough. 🗣️ Guided tours in Spanish are available for 10 soles and last about an hour. They didn’t offer English tours during our visit, but I believe they do offer them. They provide self-guided audio devices in English for the same price—I'll try that next time because I'm a fan of moving at my own pace. 🎁 Gift shop: Prices are steep, but it's a welcome addition. Far too many sites in Peru lack gift shops and miss the opportunity to cash in on visitors after the experience. People want souvenirs and they're willing to pay for them! 📍 Overall: This is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Lima. Don’t rush it—plan time to explore, then unwind with a meal or drink afterward.

Lovely place amazing collection of Indigenous artifacts, beautiful displays, and the garden, just stunning small but packed full of wonderful art. It also has a large erotic art section, very Peruvian cultural art, but best to keep the kiddos out of that section. Very nice!

Basílica and Convent of San Francisco, Lima

Catholic church
Sights & Landmarks
The Basílica and Convent of San Francisco in Lima is a Baroque-style Roman Catholic church and monastery known for its prominent library and underground catacombs. The monastery houses an incredible collection of ancient texts, some dating back to the Spanish conquest, while the basilica features a neoclassical style altar. The catacombs hold around 70,000 corpses, some arranged with a decorative sense. This site offers a glimpse into Lima's deep spiritual heritage.
Visiting in Lima with my daughter, we were told the Catacombs were a must-see. An easy walk from the Central Plaza, after a harrowing and very, very long taxi ride from Miraflores. On the approach to Basilica, we were offered private tours for 75s and 60s, but declined. The cost of admission, 20s, includes the tour, which was scheduled every 30 minutes, about 20 people at a time. Since there is no photography allowed, pics are only of area. The tour was actually very fascinating. Thousands of remains, some arranged in beautiful circles, some arranged on steps, and others arranged in bins by the different bones. Skulls in one, legs another, breastbones, etc. A great visit, well worth the time. One display that had me doing a double-take was Christ on the cross. It seemed as though it had a 3-D effect. As I looked closer, on Christ’s head was long flowing hair that was being blown by the wind (a fan). Wish I had taken a short movie but this was the starting of tour. Definitely a must.
L S — Google review
I wish I had spent more time here. The church is beautiful. You get a glimpse into the catacombs from inside. Tip: Entrance fee for the museum / catacombs must be paid in cash.

It's a really interesting and historic place to visit. My only complaint is that we're not allowed to take pictures for the museum and catacombs tour. However, despite that, still a five star stop for us.
Thomas G — Google review
It was a very nice experience to save a pair dance on the street outside the cathedral. Then we entered the exhibition hall and saw. So many people's bones skulls underneath the alter of the church. It was almost a journey of about 2 hours after that we entered the cathedral, there was Maghaz going on. And this one huge crowd sitting peacefully. Listening to Father. It was an amazing experience after that to see a parade in front of the presidential quarters. The guides explained everything very well. There are clean toilets on-site and all the artefacts and the architecture reflect European influence. In peru must visit
Dr.Mohina K — Google review
A visit to Lima would be incomplete, in my opinion, unless there is an afternoon spent seeing the Catacombs at this San Francisco Church. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, and made the 45 minutes of the tour of the museum & catacombs worth the long ride from Miraflores. Previously a monastery for the priests and members of the church, it has now been transformed into a museum. Rickety structures and the risk of collapse during earthquakes further add to the inhabitibility of the place. The catacombs have over 30,000 sets of bones, and this is presumed to be be just 20% of all the people that might have been buried beneath the church between 1600s to late 1700s.. they included people from all ethnicities (all Christian, of course), across all genders and age groups. Seeing child bones in the midst was a real sad moment, and a reality check. The church was closed, so we did not get to see the inside, but the outer gate was enough to understand the beauty of its architecture. Day & time of visit - Sunday, November, 12pm. Cost of entry ticket - 30 Soles per adult (card payment accepted). Tip for guide - cash only.

Indiana Jones Would Approve If you come to Lima and skip this place, you’ve made a mistake. A big one. Beneath the Basílica and Convent of San Francisco lies a cryptic maze of catacombs—more than 35,000 human remains stacked in perfect circles and lined along narrow hallways like some forgotten ossuary art installation. It’s four meters under the surface, damp, echoing, and unforgettable. Entry costs about 20 soles ($5.61 USD), and yes, you’ll need a guide. No worries—local guides will approach you the moment you step foot on the property. They claim it's tip-based, but plan to pay around 10 soles ($2.80 USD) per person. Worth every sol. Our guide took just three of us through, which made the experience even more surreal. The tour lasts about 40 minutes and includes the church above. While we wandered beneath, mass was underway above us—hymns reverberating through stone and bone. It felt like stepping into an Indiana Jones film, minus the booby traps. This isn’t just a tour. It’s an encounter with the past. Visceral. Humbling. Mysterious. Come for the bones. Stay for the stories. And don’t forget to look up—you’re walking under centuries of prayers.

The Magic Water Circuit of the Reserve Park, situated in Lima's Parque de la Reserva, is a captivating attraction featuring 13 fountains that come alive with colorful lights and laser beams at night. This mesmerizing display of water, light, and music offers an enchanting experience for families, art enthusiasts, and anyone seeking visually stunning entertainment. Visitors can enjoy nightly performances showcasing choreographed light displays amidst the dancing waters.
What a fun place!! The light show was very cool. Make sure you check the times for that;) Cheap entrance fee, but be prepared for little kids to want to get tickets for ball pits and bounce houses, etc... You can easily spend half a day here, or just come and see the show and be on your way! Beautiful fountains. Clean and well-kept areas. Plenty of restrooms, for a small fee, of course.

It was like Las Vegas to me. I found out about this place through trip advisor tours and they were charging like $24. I took a taxi from Barranco and paid 5 soles for entrance. Much better going by my own versus paying extra money. It was fun!

I really affordable fun experience for families with young children. You can definitely spend more money if you indulge in the amusements inside, but overall a really relaxing way to spend an evening in Lima I took some pictures of the amusement pricing to share here There are three showings a night of the projected show on the main fountain It does make a difference in visibility to be right at the center Concessions inside are pretty reasonably priced

The Magic Water Circuit in Lima is a beautiful and unique experience, even during the day. While most people recommend going at night for the lights and music, we visited during the day due to our airport schedule and still really enjoyed it. The fountains are stunning, the park is well maintained, and it’s a peaceful place to walk around and take photos. You can still appreciate the creativity and variety of the water displays without the nighttime light show. A great stop if you’re looking for something relaxing and scenic in the city! The only bothering thing was that they charge for using the bathroom even once you have paid to get in.

Such a beautiful park, I Kept walking past my park as I was walking around the city & every time I looked through & saw the fountains I thought I must go but nothing quite prepared me for just how beautiful it was. It is a family park so be prepared for lots of family activities & you do pay extra for certain rides, experience & entry but for me it was equivalent of a mini Disney land so the prices were beyond reasonable & the queues were nothing in comparison of what you might expect in European parks with a Sumatra offering in my experience. I highly recommend spending the day into the evening here so you get the full daylight & evening experience. Do make sure your phone is fully charged as you may want to take 1000 photos 🤣! Enjoy.

The evening water show is so cool and a great mix of water, lights, and projections to show Pervuian culture. There's also games and other activities for kids to do. The toilets are clean and provided toilet paper, though you do pay 1.50 soles to use.

It’s a nice place to spend an afternoon/evening and escape the streets a bit. There are various fountains and also a butterfly house (only 2 species are alive in winter mai to September I guess). The entry fee is 5 soles we had to pay an extra 5 soles for the tunnel/2nd part as there is a Te Amo Peru festival with various installations. Moreover there is an additional fee of 8 soles for the butterfly house. And there is also a Jurassic park/world exhibit which would be an additional 8 soles (we didn’t do that). There are plenty of games for children some food stands and the laser/light show in the evening is also a nice touch.

Marcahuasi (Markawasi) Stone Forest

Nature & Parks
Geologic Formations
Nestled in the Andes, Marcahuasi, also known as Markawasi, is a breathtaking stone forest that promises an unforgettable adventure. A group of friends from Lima recently explored this stunning destination and found it to be a remarkable experience. They stocked up on camping supplies in town, renting tents and sleeping gear for their journey. However, they discovered that their tent was quite cramped for two tall individuals—definitely something to consider if you're planning a similar trip!
Me and a couple friends from Lima had a great time at the Stone Forest. We got supplies in town rented tents, sleeping bags, and bed mats. The tent was a little small or actually pretty cramped for two people at 6 feet tall. Very cool at night - 5 degrees Celsius so the sleeping bags we're not actually rated to this level so be sure and bring some extra blankets and warm gear. I suggest hats gloves at night time because it's really cold. The views are absolutely incredible so gorgeous such a powerful and peaceful place. I would highly recommend anyone to go we packed all over gear in ourselves so you can either do that or you can rent a donkey or take the bus or car to the top. Daytime temperatures were very warm absolutely beautiful wonderful wonderful walk. I would highly suggest taking the longer route. Enjoy and if you're lost you sure to turn on your location through Google and you'll be able to find your way using GPS positioning.

Very beautiful natural place, at an altitude of 4000 m, with also well preserved chullpas (pre-Inca tombs, Recuay culture, VIIth c.) and dead city. But: - the inhabitants of San Pedro de Casta are a little damaged by mass tourism: not so welcoming. - you have to pay a tax of 15 soles per person (50% inflation in 2 years...; 30 soles for foreigners), for ZERO SERVICE, except the maintenance of an earth track (and without a sign at the start: do not not pass under the Marcahuasi gantry in 4 * 4 but ; if we had to pay as much for each track in the country, no more people would be able to move) and uninteresting stone "facilities" that are hardly useful to anyone. - hordes of limenios pitch their tent on weekends, imposing on others their noise (music to their individual taste) until late and leaving their garbage on site (too tiring to bring back what they have been able to bring for themselves) - in the village: no public water, the small Museum is closed, and nobody had the key of the church on that day either.
Etienne M — Google review
Fantastic views from this place but the trek is NOT easy if you plan to take all of your camping equipment but yourself (I'd strongly recommend taking a donkey). One extremely important thing to note is that there are two paths once you walk half way up. (the 'short' and the 'long' path). Do not be fooled by this, the short path is steeper and will get you to the entrance of Marcahuasi quicker but it is at least another 1km from the entrance to the camp site so you are MUCH better taking the easier, longer route as they both equate to the same distance to the campsite (overall). Once you're at the top, it is absolutely breath taking but prepare for a lot of loud noise from dogs and donkeys at the top (morning and night). Also, bring your own firewood as the firewood we bought from the vendors was pretty useless.
