Zoo el Pantanal

Zoo
Outdoor Activities
Zoo el Pantanal, located about 25 minutes north of Guayaquil, was initially established as a sanctuary for injured and rescued animals. It is home to a diverse range of wildlife including rare species such as jaguars, African lions, zebras, Bengal tigers, pumas, spectacled bears, Andean eagles, monkeys and flamingos. The zoo's simple infrastructure allows the focus to remain on the animals themselves.
My Spanish is the worse but the staffs were great. They spoke enough English to help us through. It's a guided tour through the zoo with a little break in between for snacks and such. Lots of great information about the animals. My kids enjoyed the variety of animals there. The zoo was clean. The tour took about 1.5 hours. We all had a good time.

Wonderfully appointed and put together Zoo well taken care of, a lot of pride in the staff, great layout, excellent price, wonderful knowledge, clean and safe. halfway point for rest and refreshment. Wonderful variety of animals mammals and reptiles Etc from around the world. worth the visit. worth the time. great exercise and value for your money.
Douglas C — Google review
Very intimate zoo. A lot of animals to see. The tour guide was awesome and very knowledgeable of the animals there. He answered any questions. Prices were great and service was not rushed. There is a snack bar mid way through the tour. Definitely recommend this zoo! this is something you don't get in the US
George J — Google review
The Zoo was worthy to visit and see some unique animals. It takes 90 mins to see everything with a guide (who was a bit pushy). The 4th star would require them to repair the pathway with better material than just dirt (it rained last night and everything got muddy). Also they need bigger enclosures for the Panther and some others. Finally, the guide… not their best foot forward. I learned more from the signs in front of the animals than I did from the guide, and that’s not an exaggeration.
Robert G — Google review
The zoo was a nice place to be. They have animals I’ve never seen in person. The huge turtles were so beautiful. I enjoyed watching the monkeys and all of the other animals. I then got really sad because I kept picturing these animals in their original habitat especially the ones that came from Africa. It’s good for kids and for people who want to see some animals in person
Kal L — Google review
It is the best set and beautuful Zoo in Ecuador at 15min out of Guayaquil on via Nobol very accesible by bus and car. Great tour guides well knowledable and friendly. Animals look happy and well cared of. I recomend it very much for a family day out.
Dory S — Google review
One of the most complaining zoos of the city, not too far away, you reach in 15 mins driving from Parque Samanes. Full of animals native from the country, and some others from around the world. Amazing for the kids, it's a must if you're I'm town. Don't forget to give a tip to your guide.
Ricardo G — Google review
If you visit Guayaquil (Ecuador) this is one of the places you must visit. There are more than 60 different animals in this zoo. The people who work here are really knowledgeable and they share with you important information about every single animal that they have.

Chimborazo

Mountains
Chimborazo is an inactive volcano and a popular hiking destination, featuring glaciers and surrounded by protected land with diverse wildlife. Surprisingly, if measured from the Earth's center, it would be taller than Mount Everest due to the planet's shape. The journey to the summit typically involves starting at a car park around 4,800 meters and trekking to a refuge over 5,000 meters before beginning the climb.
The climb was not as technical as I thought it would be based on what I've read, but it definitely requires a measure of strength, stamina, and a large share of deep breaths! Amazing climb with a gorgeous sunrise at the top.
Minh C — Google review
Wonderful mountain. The highest in the world from the center of the earth 🌎. Enjoy. You might get headaches. Be cognizant of this!
Mansour M — Google review
Mountain is amazing but it gets too foggy. Need to be patient waiting for weather to clear to get a nice view.
Kevin — Google review
The place is just amazing. You have to be in good shape because there is almost no air haha. But nevertheless the view and experience is from another world. Also you have to remember that this is the farthest point from the middle of the earth.
Cesar S — Google review
Challenging but worth it. Very steep and the way up seems endless as it looks always the same for the last few hours, but once on top you’ll realize you have never seen the sun that big. This is a truly unique place in the world!
Flavia L — Google review
Driving up to Chimborazo is an adventure by itself! The views along the road are absolutely stunning - you'll want to stop every few minutes for photos. I'd read that mornings are usually clearer, but honestly, the weather changes fast - as we were leaving, the clouds suddenly cleared and that's when we got the best view! So you never really know - definitely check the forecast before going. Make sure it is a sunny day. ☀️ 😎 When we started walking from the first refuge, a local offered to take us up to the second refuge on horseback for $10 or $15 round trip - and it was totally worth it! At that altitude, it's easy to lose your breath, so the horse ride made it way more enjoyable. Make sure to bring a coat or a warm sweater, it gets very cold 🥶❄️.
M H — Google review
Amazing mountain We ate dinner and rested at high camp before starting our climb at midnight We climbed with guides and turned around about half way up the mountain due to avalanche danger Overall great adventure and will likely be back
Colby R — Google review
Natural and very good place to visit and pass time. Good scenario and full excitement to visit here. Beauty of nature makes you very happy and you feel full energy of nature. From the first base camp after you register your details you have to enter in the reserve zone of national park. You can see full forest llamás in the park.

Guayaquil Historical Park

Mentioned on

Park
Guayaquil Historical Park is a picturesque park surrounded by charming historic pastel-colored houses and features a small zoo. The Wildlife area spans 4 hectares and is home to over 50 species of birds, mammals, and reptiles living in their natural mangrove forest habitat. Visitors can stroll along raised boardwalk paths for close contact with the ecosystem without disturbing the animals.
We stayed at the park hotel. It was really lovely. There are not a lot of activities, but looking at the water, animals, and old buildings is relaxing. The morning breakfast in the courtyard is a nice way to start the day.
Heather O — Google review
We visited the Guayaquil Historical Park and were absolutely impressed! It’s a truly atmospheric place where you can learn about Ecuador’s history and culture — and even feel like you’ve stepped back in time. We especially loved the area with traditional architecture and actors in historical costumes, perfect for photos. The park is well maintained, full of greenery, animals, and engaging exhibits. A great spot for both tourists and local families. Highly recommended!
Ivan L — Google review
A lovely place to visit in the centre of Guayaquil. Went on a hot sunny day but the walks offer plenty of shade. Nice variety of animals to see including crocodiles, caiman, parrots, monkeys and much more. $4 for an adult to enter.
Richard N — Google review
Beautiful place! The walk was nice, specially under the trees and it was nice to see most of the animals and some being fed. Also the historical buildings were open and gave us a look of the old city houses and style of living, totally worth it!
Erick&Lexi A — Google review
Loved this place. Our guide was great, and he took the time to make the experience even more fulfilling.
Henry — Google review
Poor animal conditions: Many animals are kept in very small enclosures, which raises serious concerns about their welfare. Numerous birds are also confined in cages, which diminishes the educational and natural value of the experience. • Entrance fee: The entry fee is $5 for foreigners, which is relatively low, but still worth noting for future visitors. • Unsafe natural area: The supposedly natural section by the water is difficult to access and potentially dangerous, with poorly maintained or slippery paths. • Pollution: The water in this area appears polluted, negatively affecting both the environment and the visitor experience.
Charline D — Google review
Really nice place for a weekend stroll. Get to know some of the local fauna, history, and culture (some food too). Fun for the whole family. Ask for the montubio show, funny stuff. There is a really fancy restaurant and hotel inside the park. Don't forget to try local sweets and treats.

Divided into three sections, it offers an array of attractions including restaurants, shops, monuments, and recreational stops. The south section features dining and shopping options while the central area boasts landmarks like the Civic Plaza and Moorish Clock Tower.
I feel safe here. I came for a quick walk and appreciated the secure entrance and exit, with many police officers and security personnel present. The area offers a nice view, along with a market selling snacks, ice cream, and water. The river view is beautiful.
Maethum — Google review
Strongly recommended if you are looking for some sightseeing and great spot, this Malecon has all you might have look into Guayaquil in one place, also there are different places to grag food or snacks, activities might very from walking along the pier to ride a pirate boat, there is also a wheel of fortune and a dinasour theme park.
Chris B — Google review
The Malecon is a fine, popular walk along the river with a good amount of shade. Security seemed pretty good at all entrances. Many families were there. We felt safe and secure while there during the day. There are rides and small vendors along the malecon. More upscale restaurants with river views are also available. There are plenty of good spots for pictures.
Marc — Google review
if anybody tells you there is no museum worth visiting in Guayaquil they are wrong. This place offers some modernistic art, installations, etc. which I don't need. In the last room they show a very impressive collection of pre-columbian ceramics: amazing. These objects don't need any explanation. They speak by themselves.
Pestilenz — Google review
Really cool walk along the water, safe as there is lots of security, and lots of stores you can buy food and goods from

A must-visit place in Guayaquil! Malecón 2000 is a beautiful and safe waterfront area perfect for walking, relaxing, or spending time with family. It offers great views of the river, well-maintained gardens, monuments, and attractions. Both locals and tourists will enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. A highlight of the city!

Parque Seminario

Park

Parque Seminario, also known as Parque Bolivar or Parque de los Iguanas, is a historic 17th-century park in Guayaquil. It features sculptures, an octagonal pavilion, the Palace of Guayaquil and the Cathedral of Guayaquil. The park is famous for its resident iguanas that freely roam around, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to interact with them and take photos.
Semanario park is directly in front of the cathedral, which is worth a 10min free visit in itself.  The park is most famous for the 100 very tame large green iguanas that live here. There are signs posted do not touch and do not feed; there are guards to enforce the rules. But enforcement seemed random, if you are determined it is quite possible to feed and handle the lizards, they are very docile. But you might get caught and you might get bit.
Jay A — Google review
Parque Seminario, also known as Iguana Park, is a small but beautiful green space in the center of Guayaquil. The park is well-kept, with shaded benches, trees, and a calm atmosphere that feels like a peaceful break from the busy city. The highlight is, of course, the iguanas that roam freely. They climb the trees, lounge on the grass, and are surprisingly calm around people, making it easy to take pictures or simply observe them up close. What makes this park special is the mix of history and charm with the unique experience of sharing the space with dozens of iguanas. Families, tourists, and locals all enjoy it, and the environment feels welcoming. The gardens and walkways are clean and inviting, and the presence of the iguanas gives the park a memorable character that you don’t see anywhere else. Overall, Parque Seminario is a must-see spot in Guayaquil—not because of its size, but because of its atmosphere and the one-of-a-kind experience it offers.
SRS — Google review
We visited Parque Seminario during our trip to Guayaquil and really enjoyed it. It’s a small, charming park right in the city center, full of life with free-roaming iguanas, small tortoises, and birds. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming — a perfect little break from the busy streets. Definitely worth a quick visit!
Anastasia B — Google review
We had a great day here. Walked through the park to the waterfront. The iguanas were all over the park. Some people chose to feed them. It created a lot of excitement t with the iguanas!
Michael O — Google review
Everyone was siding in the experience and having a good time. There was a gentleman there that helped take pictures and didn’t ask for anything (although I did tip), and there were prime selling Romain lettuce to give to the iguanas. We really enjoyed it.
Waldo J — Google review
This park does not disappoint. There are tons of iguanas and turtles everywhere in the park. Watch out for a bit of iguana droppings coming out of the trees. Overall it's a must visit when in Guayaquil. Easy to get to and it feels relatively safe here during the day.
Nav S — Google review
Great to a quick stop! The park itself is pretty, but the main attractions are the iguanas that reside there! They are not afraid of you at all, and if you bring a banana along, then expect to make some friends!
Jennifer C — Google review
This park is really sold on the fact that there are iguanas there, but to be honest, there aren't too many and they're not particularly big or impressive. Still, it's a nice park and there are ponds, where iguanas mix with fish and turtles. The added draw for this park is that there is also the Metropolitan Cathedral right next to it, which is pretty impressive in it's own right.

Great tour operator with quality equipment and staff dedicated to customer service, safety and satisfaction. Galo, the owner, went out of his way to organize a private tour for me. Luis, my guide, provided good company and excellent support. Hiking and biking in the spectacular beauty of Chimborazo on a gorgeous, sunny day and with enough space to be alone with nature and my thoughts was an unforgettably wonderful experience!

I ve never had a such a good bike, guide, i felt me safe. It s one of my best memory in Ecuador, downhill the Chimborazo. If there s a place to go and a company tout recommand, it s this one
Catherine P — Google review
We did the mid-long mtb tour on Chimborazo. Galo took a lot of time to explain us the tour and procedure in detail the evening bevor. Safety equipment is in good shape, bikes are a bit outdated but in good condition and more than sufficient to bike down the Vulcan safely. We can highly recommend to do the tour with Pro Bici, the are very well experience and took care to give the customers a special experience.
Ändi S — Google review
Very flexible for a group of 11 people. We had a blast with the guided despite less than ideal weather. Only complaint was how long the meeting the night before took-over 2 hours, we got back to our hotel at 10:30PM.
Lindsay L — Google review
Amazing experience! This company uses different trials than all the other companies. Truly in the country side riding on dirt roads instead of the asphalt road like other companies. Very calm and professional with me. Had a great opportunity to go to a unique forest to eat lunch as well. This tour is a bit difficult, yet doable for people seeking adventure! Possibly the best thing I’ve ever done in my life.
Emily — Google review
Very friendly people, however quite unorganized. Our introduction took more than 2 hours after we had to wait 40min for someone to appear at their office (which btw is a huge mess). In between we had to run to the supermarket before it closes, as you have to buy your own drinks and food for the tour. Too much hustle for an organized tour of this price...we opted out in fear that the tour will be as unorganized and lengthy as the introduction the day before. Therefore, despite everyone being very friendly I would not recommend the tour.

Hacienda La Danesa

Hotel
Sights & Landmarks
Country-chic quarters in a genteel rural farmstay offering a restaurant & horseback riding.
My group of six (4 adults, 2 nine year olds) made a day trip here from Guayaquil on our way to the Galapagos. What a great spot. Impeccably decorated, very well-trained and attentive staff, excellent food, and fun activities. Highly recommended; we wish we could have spent a night there.
Clifford H — Google review
One of the loveliest haciendas on the planet. The architecture and appointments in the rooms and common area are sheer perfection. Whoever designed the buildings and the interior must be at the top of their respective industries. That being said, the price is steep for the location. We booked the Garden Cottage along with the meal plan and two extra excursions (beekeeping--incredible!) and (cloud forest waterfall hike--stunning!) and the cost added up to over $1,000 a day. Service is excellent, and though meal preferences don't always translate well, the quality and presentation of the food is outstanding. Try Myra's empanadas! And the hot chocolate was the best I ever had. If you are looking for peaceful luxury, this is the place! So beautiful.
Rebecca J — Google review
Loved Hacienda La Danesa! The service was excellent, the food was excellent, and we really enjoyed the activities! The property is beautiful and it is such a peaceful setting to escape the city and just enjoy the sights and sounds of the plantation. The staff were above and beyond helpful. We only did a day trip and I wish we had time to spend a few nights.
Alexis A — Google review
What an excellent surprise beautifully presented in the low lands of a forest and plantation. Down a long drive you come to a modern ranch style home. Every detail is cared for everyone has your enjoyment at forefront. We are sole amazing food all freshly cooked, made chocolate from. Picking the pod to the end result, wonderful. The rooms are beautiful, you lay in bed looking out of the plantation. Highly recommended and very privileged thank you all.
Martin K — Google review
La Danesa was such an amazing place. The hacienda was absolutely beautiful, and our room was so comforting and relaxing. Sarai was so accommodating and cheerful. The food was defiantly the most memorable as it was the best food we had during our time in Ecuador. Allyson was a great guide and so fun to be around. Wilson showed us amazing waterfalls, as well as the rituals behind them. Benny took us horseback riding and was so patient with us. Josue and Jocelyn were very kind and took great care of us during our meals! Xiomara taught us how to make chocolate and the specific process behind it which turned into us making our own chocolate bars. John took us tubing and to the farm to teach us the behind-the-scenes of the cocoa plant. It was a great way to end our vacation and added to our time in Equador!
Sarah K — Google review
Photos simply cannot do this stunning property justice. The level of attention to detail is truly remarkable. From the moment you arrive and are greeted by the wonderful Ivonne to the first glimpse of your room you will wish you had booked more nights. What a place!!
Daniel P — Google review
Perfect place to relax. The farm has teak forests, cacao plantations and a variety of animals you can interact with (ride horses, milk a cow, guinea chickens, geese and more. ). Hosts and staff are very attentive. Expect some refreshments upon arrival. You can learn the process of making chocolate from a cacao bean, down to making your own chocolate bars after tempering the chocolate. A small store offers products for home (placemats, teak spoons, cutting boards, etc. ) and more (purses).
Santiago N — Google review
Located 1h30 minutes maximum 2 hours away from Guayaquil, It's a very beautiful place where you can be in touch with the nature. Many activities are offered here like biking in an amazing landscape, a modified way of tubing, you can learn how chocolate is produced and made in Ecuador in a very interesting way. People there are so polite, the bathrooms are great and clean and the food is more than delicious. There is a souvenir store also where you can buy the delicious sweets that are only made in that hacienda. I give it 3 stars because : they offered us a bilingual guide for the whole day and we only had it for the cacao activity (not the tubing). They offered us to milk our cow but it never happened, and that was one of the activities we wanted to do the most. Also because they charged us for the chocolate we made with our hands, when they didn't specify we had to pay an additional price for that.

Didn't get to go inside or up close or learn much about the templo—what some would consider the main feature of the ruins here—perhaps because some students were studying it or reconstructing it at the time, saw some scaffolding and half a dozen jovenes dusting the stones—I don't really know, my guide didn't say anything about the templo, when we arrived here at the end of the tour she simply broke the news that we owed her more money because, unbeknownst to us, she was a "private guide" not included in the admission price, even though we had not personally contracted her, the complejo had called her in for us when we purchased the tickets. See my review of the tourist trap "complejo" for more, but suffice it to say Ingapirca no vale la pena ni la plata, güey, vete a Cajas o El Chorro de Giron para disfrutar esta región de véras.

The variable weather made the color of the stones almost always uniform and did not allow for that play of polychromy that the site has as a characteristic!! However it has its charm and must be seen regardless!! (Original) Purtroppo quando sono arrivato l’ho trovato chiuso al pubblico. It is one of the most important and emblematic places of the Cañari culture and the Inca civilization in the country. The temple was built in the 15th century by the Incas, and it is believed that it was used for rituals and religious ceremonies. The structure is impressive, with stone walls and architecture that reflects the skill and precision of the Inca builders. The Temple of the Sun is famous for its orientation toward the June solstice, when the sun aligns perfectly with the temple's entrance. This suggests that the Incas had an advanced knowledge of astronomy and mathematics. The Ingapirca archaeological site also includes other buildings and structures, such as the House of the Viracochas, the Main Plaza and the Cemetery. Parque Nacional Cajas

Cajas National Park is a nature lover's paradise, boasting over 230 lagoons including Lagartococha, Osohuaycu, Quinoascocha, La Toreadora, Sunincocha and Tinguishcocha. Visitors can engage in various activities such as horseback riding, camping and sport fishing. The park offers ample parking for those arriving by car and clean facilities at the entrance.
This is one of the most beautiful National Parks anywhere, let alone Ecuador. The altitude is very high, so you should be somewhat acclimated before hiking much. There's also a need to layer clothing since it can be warm at time and cold and radiation other times. But each bend you round reveals another incredibly beautiful vista.

This is a fantastic national park, one can never miss it when travel to Cuenca. Not too long trip, about 45mins drive to the high mountain side. There's a long trail to go around, beautiful lagoon, clouds, enjoy every step move forward. Get used to the acclimated location, move slowly if you just arrive in Ecuador for 1-2 days.

Great park with several hiking trails to explore. If you want to trek for multiple days it is possible. The entrance is free, you only need to register your name and how many days you are planning to spend in the park. Hiking on the routes 1 and 2 was a good choice. They don't recommend staying in the park after 4:30, the last bus to Cuenca departs a bit before 5pm.

Sights & Landmarks
The Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción, also known as the Cuenca Cathedral, is a remarkable landmark in Cuenca, Ecuador. This grand Catholic church was built over 80 years starting in 1886 and can accommodate more than 9,000 worshippers. With its stunning Romanesque-revival architecture featuring three blue and white domes, the cathedral stands out in the historic city center.
Wow, wow, wow! This cathedral makes other cathedrals pale in comparison. It's scale and grandeur totally blew me away. It's impressive both in the day and at night, although I'd recommend visiting in the day, as you can enter. And it opens at 7am, so there's really no excuse not to. It has distinctive blue stripes domes which are even painted blue inside too. The grand entrance, which remains closed until major events is jaw dropping. The front is relatively flat and basic, but beautiful nonetheless. But the real draw is when you enter. It's absolutely enormous and it's decorated so beautifully with incredible marble. It's also free to enter, unlike many similar places, but you are asked not to take photos and videos during services, out of respect. Likewise, you're asked to dress appropriately, so please, no flip flops and short shorts. There's also an interesting scale model of the building inside.
Hidden F — Google review
This Cathedral is definitely a feast for the eyes, both inside and out! There are plenty of paintings and carvings to admire, and you can walk up several floors to see the lovely view from the roof also. Definitely recommend a visit.

Big cathedral that was only open during mass. Many people attend mass of all ages. It was a holiday weekend, so there were hundreds of people. The nearby park and flower market 🌺🌹🌺 are a draw too. Vendors sell religious articles on the steps of the cathedral.
Peterson T — Google review
It’s the most recognizable structure of Cuenca, one of UNESCO-designated World Heritage Centers👏👏👏. This building is one of many architectural treasures of the city, but this one is not an old colonial structure. It’s a modern edifice constructed from the mid-1880s to mid-1960s. It’s a predominant Neo-Romanesque with Spanish Baroque influence, conceived by the German architect Johannes Baptista Stiehle who also built San Alfonso Basílica of Cuenca and the Buga Basilica in Colombia. The arches, both interior and exterior, are very Romanesque/Byzantine. The most notable feature are the Renaissance-designed blue/white domes made of tiles imported from the former Czechoslovakia. The building is mostly Ecuadorian marble 😎😎😎 but the floor marble apparently are Italian. The main entrance door has a dramatic arch entrance, the door itself is a very thick heavy metal (bronze?) and highly decorated. It leads to a high altar, with all the usual catholic idols. The altar is a theatrical Spanish Baroque design. 😎 It is made wood with highly carved and spiraling Solomonic columns. 😎 The canopy of the altar has been carved to resemble the canopy of the Peter’s Basilica of Vatican. 😎 The entire altar including the columns layered in gold. The side naves are exact replicas of the central nave. They have several altars, each dedicated to a catholic saint, one of whom was an Ecuadorian Hermano Miguel. The building is actually unfinished. *** The two side towers are less than half the original design. The “shortened” towers are the base of the original design. *** This was apparently due to a miscalculation😊, the base cannot support whatever would have been built on top of them. NOT TO MISS::: At the front end of the left nave, before the presbytery, + 😎😎😎 there’s an original wooden model of the design, which includes the architect’s original idea for the high towers that were not built. + On the wall is a memorial to the architect Johannes Baptista Stiehle.

Marcahuasi (Markawasi) Stone Forest

Nature & Parks
Geologic Formations
Nestled in the Andes, Marcahuasi, also known as Markawasi, is a breathtaking stone forest that promises an unforgettable adventure. A group of friends from Lima recently explored this stunning destination and found it to be a remarkable experience. They stocked up on camping supplies in town, renting tents and sleeping gear for their journey. However, they discovered that their tent was quite cramped for two tall individuals—definitely something to consider if you're planning a similar trip!
Me and a couple friends from Lima had a great time at the Stone Forest. We got supplies in town rented tents, sleeping bags, and bed mats. The tent was a little small or actually pretty cramped for two people at 6 feet tall. Very cool at night - 5 degrees Celsius so the sleeping bags we're not actually rated to this level so be sure and bring some extra blankets and warm gear. I suggest hats gloves at night time because it's really cold. The views are absolutely incredible so gorgeous such a powerful and peaceful place. I would highly recommend anyone to go we packed all over gear in ourselves so you can either do that or you can rent a donkey or take the bus or car to the top. Daytime temperatures were very warm absolutely beautiful wonderful wonderful walk. I would highly suggest taking the longer route. Enjoy and if you're lost you sure to turn on your location through Google and you'll be able to find your way using GPS positioning.
Michael K — Google review
Very beautiful natural place, at an altitude of 4000 m, with also well preserved chullpas (pre-Inca tombs, Recuay culture, VIIth c.) and dead city. But: - the inhabitants of San Pedro de Casta are a little damaged by mass tourism: not so welcoming. - you have to pay a tax of 15 soles per person (50% inflation in 2 years...; 30 soles for foreigners), for ZERO SERVICE, except the maintenance of an earth track (and without a sign at the start: do not not pass under the Marcahuasi gantry in 4 * 4 but ; if we had to pay as much for each track in the country, no more people would be able to move) and uninteresting stone "facilities" that are hardly useful to anyone. - hordes of limenios pitch their tent on weekends, imposing on others their noise (music to their individual taste) until late and leaving their garbage on site (too tiring to bring back what they have been able to bring for themselves) - in the village: no public water, the small Museum is closed, and nobody had the key of the church on that day either.
Etienne M — Google review
Fantastic views from this place but the trek is NOT easy if you plan to take all of your camping equipment but yourself (I'd strongly recommend taking a donkey). One extremely important thing to note is that there are two paths once you walk half way up. (the 'short' and the 'long' path). Do not be fooled by this, the short path is steeper and will get you to the entrance of Marcahuasi quicker but it is at least another 1km from the entrance to the camp site so you are MUCH better taking the easier, longer route as they both equate to the same distance to the campsite (overall). Once you're at the top, it is absolutely breath taking but prepare for a lot of loud noise from dogs and donkeys at the top (morning and night). Also, bring your own firewood as the firewood we bought from the vendors was pretty useless.

Lima Main Square, also known as Plaza de Armas or Plaza Mayor, is a historic and iconic public space located in the heart of Lima's historic center. It holds great significance as the birthplace of Lima and played a pivotal role in Peru's history, being the site where Jose de San Martin proclaimed independence for the country.
Lima Main Square is a stunning blend of colonial architecture, vibrant energy, and rich history. The colorful buildings, the Cathedral, and the Government Palace make it picture-perfect from every angle. The square feels safe, well-maintained, and lively with street performers and locals relaxing. It’s a great place to walk around, take photos, or just sit and soak in the atmosphere. A must-visit if you’re in Lima!

Nice square with colonial style and architecture, typical for similar plazas actor South America. There are some important buildings around to see. In principal, this is the most worth seeing site of the old part of the city, which otherwise doen not have much to offer.

Beautiful central area with lots of interesting sites in a walkable area including Convent of Santo Domingo, the Catacombs, many shops and restaurants. Great just to walk down the streets, grab an ice cream or a cocktail or check out the many vendors offering everything from alpaca clothing to T-shirts. All around the area are little rounded statuettes of women. I found one covered, instead of colorful paints, with reflective surface. One large stone commemorates the original Inca governing people of the area. Beautiful buildings with a variety of architectures. And the gorgeous tall water fountain in the very center of the square.

I recently traveled from Cusco to Lima, Peru, and was met with widespread protests. The police presence was heavy, with officers carrying full sets of weapons. The streets were blocked with trash and feces, making it difficult to navigate. To stay safe, we kept our distance and observed from afar. Areas like Miraflores and Barranco felt more secure than the city center.
SPICY — Google review
We spent a leisurely day exploring the heart of Lima and made our way to the city’s beautiful main square—Plaza Mayor, also known as Plaza de Armas. This historic square is the birthplace of Lima, founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535, and has remained the political and cultural center of the city ever since. Surrounding the square are several of Lima’s most important colonial-era buildings, including the Government Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Municipal Palace, and the Lima Cathedral. The blend of Spanish colonial architecture and vibrant local activity gives the square a timeless charm. While we were there, we were fortunate to witness a Catholic procession passing through the square—an experience that brought the city’s deep-rooted religious traditions to life. The area is perfect for capturing great photos, soaking in the local atmosphere, and appreciating Lima’s rich history and living culture.

Basílica and Convent of San Francisco, Lima

Mentioned on

Catholic church
Sights & Landmarks
The Basílica and Convent of San Francisco in Lima is a Baroque-style Roman Catholic church and monastery known for its prominent library and underground catacombs. The monastery houses an incredible collection of ancient texts, some dating back to the Spanish conquest, while the basilica features a neoclassical style altar. The catacombs hold around 70,000 corpses, some arranged with a decorative sense. This site offers a glimpse into Lima's deep spiritual heritage.
Visiting in Lima with my daughter, we were told the Catacombs were a must-see. An easy walk from the Central Plaza, after a harrowing and very, very long taxi ride from Miraflores. On the approach to Basilica, we were offered private tours for 75s and 60s, but declined. The cost of admission, 20s, includes the tour, which was scheduled every 30 minutes, about 20 people at a time. Since there is no photography allowed, pics are only of area. The tour was actually very fascinating. Thousands of remains, some arranged in beautiful circles, some arranged on steps, and others arranged in bins by the different bones. Skulls in one, legs another, breastbones, etc. A great visit, well worth the time. One display that had me doing a double-take was Christ on the cross. It seemed as though it had a 3-D effect. As I looked closer, on Christ’s head was long flowing hair that was being blown by the wind (a fan). Wish I had taken a short movie but this was the starting of tour. Definitely a must.
L S — Google review
I wish I had spent more time here. The church is beautiful. You get a glimpse into the catacombs from inside. Tip: Entrance fee for the museum / catacombs must be paid in cash.
Tanya B — Google review
It's a really interesting and historic place to visit. My only complaint is that we're not allowed to take pictures for the museum and catacombs tour. However, despite that, still a five star stop for us.
Thomas G — Google review
It was a very nice experience to save a pair dance on the street outside the cathedral. Then we entered the exhibition hall and saw. So many people's bones skulls underneath the alter of the church. It was almost a journey of about 2 hours after that we entered the cathedral, there was Maghaz going on. And this one huge crowd sitting peacefully. Listening to Father. It was an amazing experience after that to see a parade in front of the presidential quarters. The guides explained everything very well. There are clean toilets on-site and all the artefacts and the architecture reflect European influence. In peru must visit
Dr.Mohina K — Google review
A visit to Lima would be incomplete, in my opinion, unless there is an afternoon spent seeing the Catacombs at this San Francisco Church. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, and made the 45 minutes of the tour of the museum & catacombs worth the long ride from Miraflores. Previously a monastery for the priests and members of the church, it has now been transformed into a museum. Rickety structures and the risk of collapse during earthquakes further add to the inhabitibility of the place. The catacombs have over 30,000 sets of bones, and this is presumed to be be just 20% of all the people that might have been buried beneath the church between 1600s to late 1700s.. they included people from all ethnicities (all Christian, of course), across all genders and age groups. Seeing child bones in the midst was a real sad moment, and a reality check. The church was closed, so we did not get to see the inside, but the outer gate was enough to understand the beauty of its architecture. Day & time of visit - Sunday, November, 12pm. Cost of entry ticket - 30 Soles per adult (card payment accepted). Tip for guide - cash only.

Indiana Jones Would Approve If you come to Lima and skip this place, you’ve made a mistake. A big one. Beneath the Basílica and Convent of San Francisco lies a cryptic maze of catacombs—more than 35,000 human remains stacked in perfect circles and lined along narrow hallways like some forgotten ossuary art installation. It’s four meters under the surface, damp, echoing, and unforgettable. Entry costs about 20 soles ($5.61 USD), and yes, you’ll need a guide. No worries—local guides will approach you the moment you step foot on the property. They claim it's tip-based, but plan to pay around 10 soles ($2.80 USD) per person. Worth every sol. Our guide took just three of us through, which made the experience even more surreal. The tour lasts about 40 minutes and includes the church above. While we wandered beneath, mass was underway above us—hymns reverberating through stone and bone. It felt like stepping into an Indiana Jones film, minus the booby traps. This isn’t just a tour. It’s an encounter with the past. Visceral. Humbling. Mysterious. Come for the bones. Stay for the stories. And don’t forget to look up—you’re walking under centuries of prayers.

The Larco Museum, located in the district of Pueblo Libre, is a former mansion turned into a museum that showcases an extensive collection of pre-Columbian artifacts. The museum offers a comprehensive overview of 5,000 years of Peruvian history, art, and culture through its well-curated galleries. Visitors can explore ancient ceramics and textiles while strolling through lush gardens. Guided tours are available for deeper insights into the significance of the exhibits.
This museum isn't very big but it has amazing pieces. I would really recommend a guided tour which is offered at an extra 10 soles - it really does a much better job of explaining what we are looking at. Very interesting pieces divided in 3 areas: the main museum (perhaps 5-6 rooms), the erotic gallery, and visible storage. The surroundings are also very nice and there is a great fancy restaurant too. A big tip would be to come early: we got there at 10-ish and had a tour just for both of us; by the time we were going out there were lines for tickets and the museum was very crowded.

Beautiful museum of artifacts from ancient Peruvian civilizations, including ceramics, textiles, and metalwork. The exhibits are nicely curated, and the collection is huge, but for an entry fee of 50 soles I would've expected a bit more variety and some other content than just constant display cases with accompanying text. Very interesting, but after a while it gets a little boring. Beside the main museum there's a separate exhibit for "erotic" artifacts, mainly pottery portraying sexually explicit scenes. It's included in the main ticket price. There's also a souvenir shop and a restaurant on site. There are explanatory texts in several languages for all exhibits, so English speakers for example can easily follow along. There's also an audio guide available, but this we didn't try. We spent approximately two hours walking through the museum, stopping briefly at most exhibits.

The Larco Museum in Lima is one of Peru’s finest museums and a must-visit for anyone interested in history and culture. Housed in an 18th-century colonial mansion, it features an outstanding collection of pre-Columbian art, including ceramics, textiles, metalwork, and jewelry from ancient civilizations like the Moche, Nazca, and Inca. One of its highlights is the world-famous gallery of erotic pottery, which is both fascinating and unique. The museum also offers beautifully curated exhibits with clear explanations in multiple languages, making it easy to understand Peru’s rich cultural heritage. The gardens and café add to the experience, creating a relaxing atmosphere after exploring the galleries. Perfect for culture lovers, history buffs, and anyone wanting a deeper understanding of Peru before (or after) visiting its archaeological sites.

An excellent way to familiarise yourself with the various cultures of Peru, both Incan and Pre-Incan. Lots to see so probably allow around 90 minutes. It is slightly cheaper to book a ticket in advance online than pay at the museum. The small gardens are very colourful. Worth going here and combining with the National archaeological and anthropology museum, which is about a 20 minute walk away.

This is a must to visit if you make it to Lima Peru. There are about 45k of antiques found in different sites in the whole Peru. They belong to the pre Inca culture. It is so surprised to see how well they all were preserved after 2000 or 5000 years underground. I did not have much time there for the last visit but next time when I come back I think I will spend a whole day here. Highly recommended.

🌟 An unforgettable experience—leave yourself plenty of time! Visited on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 with reservations from 5–7pm. We arrived early but were overdue for dinner, so we hit the restaurant before exploring the museum. Though that left us only about an hour inside. Despite the short visit, every detail of the museum, restaurant, and grounds impressed me. 🍽️ The restaurant is beautifully designed—definitely a bit upscale for my “hole-in-the-wall” tastes, but still worth the stop. Prices are on the higher side. 🌺 The grounds are stunning, with vibrant flowers everywhere and photo-worthy views around every corner. 🏺 The museum exhibits are top-notch, A+. What can be said about this collection that hasn't already been said? The quality, detail, and condition of these artifacts that are hundreds and thousands of years old, are second to none. Simply extraordinary. I'd recommend 3-5 hours or more if you really want to absorb and appreciate everything. So I'll definitely be returning for another visit as 1–2 hours isn’t nearly enough. 🗣️ Guided tours in Spanish are available for 10 soles and last about an hour. They didn’t offer English tours during our visit, but I believe they do offer them. They provide self-guided audio devices in English for the same price—I'll try that next time because I'm a fan of moving at my own pace. 🎁 Gift shop: Prices are steep, but it's a welcome addition. Far too many sites in Peru lack gift shops and miss the opportunity to cash in on visitors after the experience. People want souvenirs and they're willing to pay for them! 📍 Overall: This is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Lima. Don’t rush it—plan time to explore, then unwind with a meal or drink afterward.

Lovely place amazing collection of Indigenous artifacts, beautiful displays, and the garden, just stunning small but packed full of wonderful art. It also has a large erotic art section, very Peruvian cultural art, but best to keep the kiddos out of that section. Very nice!

The Magic Water Circuit of the Reserve Park, situated in Lima's Parque de la Reserva, is a captivating attraction featuring 13 fountains that come alive with colorful lights and laser beams at night. This mesmerizing display of water, light, and music offers an enchanting experience for families, art enthusiasts, and anyone seeking visually stunning entertainment. Visitors can enjoy nightly performances showcasing choreographed light displays amidst the dancing waters.
What a fun place!! The light show was very cool. Make sure you check the times for that;) Cheap entrance fee, but be prepared for little kids to want to get tickets for ball pits and bounce houses, etc... You can easily spend half a day here, or just come and see the show and be on your way! Beautiful fountains. Clean and well-kept areas. Plenty of restrooms, for a small fee, of course.

It was like Las Vegas to me. I found out about this place through trip advisor tours and they were charging like $24. I took a taxi from Barranco and paid 5 soles for entrance. Much better going by my own versus paying extra money. It was fun!

I really affordable fun experience for families with young children. You can definitely spend more money if you indulge in the amusements inside, but overall a really relaxing way to spend an evening in Lima I took some pictures of the amusement pricing to share here There are three showings a night of the projected show on the main fountain It does make a difference in visibility to be right at the center Concessions inside are pretty reasonably priced

The Magic Water Circuit in Lima is a beautiful and unique experience, even during the day. While most people recommend going at night for the lights and music, we visited during the day due to our airport schedule and still really enjoyed it. The fountains are stunning, the park is well maintained, and it’s a peaceful place to walk around and take photos. You can still appreciate the creativity and variety of the water displays without the nighttime light show. A great stop if you’re looking for something relaxing and scenic in the city! The only bothering thing was that they charge for using the bathroom even once you have paid to get in.

Such a beautiful park, I Kept walking past my park as I was walking around the city & every time I looked through & saw the fountains I thought I must go but nothing quite prepared me for just how beautiful it was. It is a family park so be prepared for lots of family activities & you do pay extra for certain rides, experience & entry but for me it was equivalent of a mini Disney land so the prices were beyond reasonable & the queues were nothing in comparison of what you might expect in European parks with a Sumatra offering in my experience. I highly recommend spending the day into the evening here so you get the full daylight & evening experience. Do make sure your phone is fully charged as you may want to take 1000 photos 🤣! Enjoy.

The size of a small village, this theme park type attraction has 13 fountains dotted around, fun fair rides, food stalls, kids play area, a land train. A few times a day a water display occurs much to the delight of all.
J M — Google review
The evening water show is so cool and a great mix of water, lights, and projections to show Pervuian culture. There's also games and other activities for kids to do. The toilets are clean and provided toilet paper, though you do pay 1.50 soles to use.
Shawna F — Google review
It’s a nice place to spend an afternoon/evening and escape the streets a bit. There are various fountains and also a butterfly house (only 2 species are alive in winter mai to September I guess). The entry fee is 5 soles we had to pay an extra 5 soles for the tunnel/2nd part as there is a Te Amo Peru festival with various installations. Moreover there is an additional fee of 8 soles for the butterfly house. And there is also a Jurassic park/world exhibit which would be an additional 8 soles (we didn’t do that). There are plenty of games for children some food stands and the laser/light show in the evening is also a nice touch.

Huaca Pucllana Site Museum is an ancient pre-Inca archaeological site situated in Miraflores, offering a captivating journey into Lima's pre-Columbian history. The clay and adobe pyramid complex provides valuable insights into the indigenous cultures that once thrived in the region. Guided tours are available to enhance the understanding of the site's historical significance, making it an educational destination for history enthusiasts, archaeology buffs, and families with older children.
2000+ years of history packed into the center of Miraflores. A must see when visiting Lima to acquire some of the history and respect for previous civilization. The adobe architecture is incredible as millions of bricks were assembled into the pyramid that took hundreds of years to assemble. Get to see some of the agriculture and animals of Peru - guinea pigs and alpacas. The museum offers some insight, but the real value is the guided tours that leave every 30 minutes and are offered in both English and Spanish. Cost of entry is S/ 15, about $4 (includes the tour)
Kristian P — Google review
The tour was excellent! It lasted about 40 minutes, and the guides were very knowledgeable. The ruins are in the middle of Miraflores, right next to a great restaurant with a beautiful view of the site. Just note that the night tour doesn’t allow you to go to the top of the ruins — that’s only possible during the day.
Magali B — Google review
An incredible archaeological site in the heart of Miraflores! 🏛️ The 2,000-year-old adobe pyramid showcases the remarkable craftsmanship of ancient builders. The 40-minute guided tour (S/15, available in English or Spanish) is informative and engaging. Note: the night tour doesn’t include access to the top, but we took it and still loved the experience. A must-visit for history lovers in Lima!
Manjeet D — Google review
I recommend going here for the last tour at 4 pm before the first closing time. You'll see the place come alive from the warm light and shadows by the sun being relatively low in the sky. Just don't miss the tour - you cannot roam around alone. The tour is included in the very reasonable ticket price of 15 soles. Also mind the instructions and do not step on the adobe tiles.
Ville K — Google review
Fascinating study of the dedication of the ancients in building structures covering great areas with handmade vertical bricks. On some you can even see their hand and finger prints! Our guide shared a wide scope of knowledge from all of those who lived here, their customs, foods they planted and consumed, burial rites, beliefs, skills... He was a great guide to his heritage and this enormous site in the middle of the city. (Unfortunately, there is a listing for a "minizoo" here. While seeing the 7 famous llamas, alpacas and dozens+ guinea pigs was an interesting part of the tour...that does Not qualify the Very minimum pen and feeding bin as a "zoo." There is a genuine one elsewhere. The handful of indigenousanimals here are just to enlighten visitors as to the animals the original denizens had for food, like the well-planted garden.) This is a healthy, enlightening educational walk through an amazing ancient world. (PS- Please bring some currency to show your appreciation to your fascinating guide!!)

I want to say I loved it, listen - it's historical and the guide was good. Spoke very good English and the Llamas / Guinea pigs at the end are cute. It's interesting, and they're still excavating. The tour takes little under an hour.. tips for the guide are nice! They do a good job. You walk up some steepish parts, and it's sandy - so don't wear slides. ;) Worth a visit... And the restaurant overlooking the ruins is fab! But gets busy. There are other restaurants just outside too. (Not overlooking the ruins) If you're in Lima and like history.. go. I was just a little bit bored at times. 🙊

Huaca Pucllana: 4000-year-old pyramid, check. Boring guide who puts you to sleep, check. If you're gonna make me walk on ancient genius pyramid, at least make the tour entertaining. Suggestion: skip the guide and hit up the Larco Museum first. Learn more over there Trust me, you'll be way more impressed when you finally get to the real education. And honestly, just read the Wikipedia page, you'll learn more. Need tour guide and takes about one hour.
