This is a very beautiful and well maintained place with lots of nice shaded spots to take photos and plenty of photo moments to be had if you’re so inclined! One thing I would have liked to have seen more of was signage. There was plenty of general signage about the areas (in Portuguese of course so get your translator ready if you don’t speak the language!) but none specifically for trees and plants. Overall enjoyable, and we spent around 90 minutes wandering around.
Stef M — Google review
Food is amazingly good. Restaurant has incredible views of the mountains and valley, beautiful scenery. Menu is very wide, portions are well served. Staff and service also very attentive and nice. One can also visit the gardens in a park at the restaurant, which is also very much worth the time.

Beautiful Park. There you can find thematic gardens ( the theme is the different gardens you can find in different countries). There is a garden Jurassic park themed (they are still building it). It's a good place for a walk or to bring your kids. The landscape is breathtaking!
Juliana I — Google review
A beautiful place to spend some time on, the park has some theme gardens onsite. They also have a restaurant and a souvenirs store. Visits can be guided if you prefer. Its on a mountain so 1.2km up and then 1.2km down. It has some animals (macaw parrot e.g.) and a lot of good spots for making photos. The ticket to visit the park costs BRL 30 (Feb/2020), there's also a quad bike trail (BRL 100). The visit on foot will take you something as 2 hours going up with a guide and down taking photos by yourself.

Very impressive place to visit and walk around. Even if you don’t come for a pilgrimage, it is worth while to come and make it a tourist visit. It was quite busy even though it was weekday

Considered the second biggest Catholic Temple of the world (after San Pedro Temple in Vatican) and the biggest in Brazil. Beautiful religious place with plenty of infrastructure to accommodate faithful from all places and renew their vows
Claudio T — Google review
It was bigger than o ever imagined. It’s like an entire city, it takes hours to walk around and be able to appreciate every detail. Lots of stores inside and restaurants. With the Covid-19 restrictions, we couldn’t see more of the inside details but it was worth it. They have mass every hour and multiple locations as well. I loved it. Perfect to buy gifts and there more attractions outside the Basilica as well. The entire city is filled with attractions and even the cities nearby.
Katiuscia M — Google review
This should be included in the must visit places in Brazil. The cathedral is huge and very beautiful. The dome ia decorated with paintings of Brazilian fauna. The sacred image of the Holly Mary, which was found by locals and is attributed to several miracles, is exposed there. The energy of this place is hard to describe.

Air Bontur cable cars provide a convenient and comfortable way to reach Cruzeiro Hill, a place of meditation in the Stations of the Cross. The individual and air-conditioned cable cars offer fantastic views of Aparecida and the Sanctuary. Visitors highly recommend this organized and safe experience, praising its efficiency and privacy. Up to six people can enter each cable car at a time. If you want, you can pay a little more and go up the elevator and have an even better view of the sanctuary. The parish priest tried to prevent a large flock of faithful to pray the Holy Rosary in front of the church. This had been announced days in advance. Instead he purposely rang all of the church bells, to make so much noise that nobody could understand a word - it was a wonderful experience to pray the Holy Rosary under such circumstance, against the orders of the pastor! *Shame on this parish pastor!*

This scenic train ride is pulled by the iconic steam locomotive Maria Fume and offers a round trip lasting about two hours. Along the way, you'll encounter breathtaking landscapes perfect for capturing memorable photos.
(Translated by Google) The Serra Train is a steam train operated by ABPF - Brazilian Association for Railway Preservation and is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Passa Quatro. The route is approximately 10 km long and the train departs from Passa Quatro station to Coronel Fulgêncio station, at the top of Serra da Mantiqueira, every Saturday and Sunday and on some holidays, also on Friday. Some stories are told along the way, as well as a singer with voice and guitar interprets classics of MPB and sertanejo music. The train makes its first stop at Manacá station, where the steam is increased for the ascent of the mountain and tourists can visit to buy handicrafts, sweets, honey and other treats. The end of the route is at Coronel Fulgêncio station, where passengers can see a photo exhibition telling a little about JK, who before becoming a politician was a captain in the Minas Gerais Military Police and treated many people injured in the fighting between the people of Minas Gerais and São Paulo during the 1932 revolution. Many photos of this movement can be found at this station, which is very close to the Mantiqueira Tunnel, on the border between the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, and the scene of the biggest battles of the 1932 revolution, in which the people of Minas Gerais emerged as the big winners. The entrance fee is relatively expensive, R$90.00 per person, and it is best to book in advance. This spectacular ride certainly needs some improvements, but that doesn't detract from the tour in any way. On the contrary, it's worth highlighting the work of these people in keeping part of our history alive! The ride takes about 2 hours round trip, leaving from the city of Passa Quatro to the tunnel that borders the state of São Paulo, which is also an important piece of Brazilian history. Children love the ride on the train pulled by a steam locomotive (the famous Maria Fumaça). I recommend buying tickets in advance, as they always sell out, as they only run on weekends! When boarding, the super polite and charismatic employees tell you about what the tour will be like, as well as the stations where they stop, which are Manacá and Coronel Fulgêncio. Along the way, they tell you interesting facts about the tour and there is a singer who livens up the entire route, who sings very well and entertains the crowd! At the stops, there are bathrooms and stalls selling sweets, drinks, and crafts. At the last station, Coronel Fulgêncio, the guide takes us to the stage of the revolution, the tunnel that connects the cities of Passa Quatro and Cruzeiro. To get to the tunnel, we walk a few meters. I recommend wearing warm clothing and comfortable shoes! Finally, the train makes its turn and we return to the station. Throughout the ride, we are privileged by a beautiful view and lots of nature!!! I recommend the ride. Recomendo o passeio.

Love the waterfalls. Crystal clear water. After finishing our 4 days of Travessia from Baependi, I took my shower here. It was damn cold and freezing. The steps to the waterfalls are well established. There are several places small ponds where even kids can enjoy the water.

Freaking cold water!!! A must go on a hot day. Also check out the other creek across the Rd. There is a human access point through fence and follow trail down to grotto swimming hole. The water temp is so much warmer!

Parque Nacional do Itatiaia

Mentioned on
1 list
National park
Nature & Parks
Park
Itatiaia National Park, Brazil's first national park, boasts a diverse range of landscapes from dense rainforests to rugged peaks. The lower section offers accessible trails leading to waterfalls and natural swimming holes, while the remote high country provides excitement for serious hikers and climbers. Visitors can enjoy abundant flora and fauna including orchids, monkeys, and tropical birds. Accessing the upper portion may require a high-clearance vehicle due to challenging roads.
Wonderful national park at Itataia. It's possible to visit the park on foot, bike or by car. Visitors entering the park by car must pay an extra fee (around R$ 24,00) to take it's paved and non paved roads on a motored vehicle. The activities available at the park for visitors range from a beautiful cultural centre with many historical highlights, track trails in a rich forest terrain, magnificent waterfalls to admire and freshen up, numerous bird watching spots, and exuberant viewpoints of the Mantiqueira Mountain and it's wildlife. The difficulty of tracks may vary a lot. Upon entry on the park, visitors are given a detailed map, which shows what's possible to do whilst visiting the site. The park is basically divided into a lower and an upper part. The most demanding tracks, which are also those that one needs to plan in advance, are located in the upper part of park. In those areas, it's possible to camp on designated areas or stay for the night at one of the park's lodging houses (reservation in advance needed). In the park's website, there are lots of information for visitors, and high definition pdf maps for downloading, as well as a list of well trained guides on the park whenever the need arises. It's not possible to park in any spot by the road, the permitted parking areas will be sign posted. All around the park, it's possible to see restaurants, hotels and other private properties, which means there's no time available to do everything you'll find at the park. It's a highly recommended visit, and a place not to forget.

There are restaurants and private parking next to the waterfall (we paid 25.00). Note: I went on a holiday and it was really crowded. We waited 40 minutes for a space to appear in the parking lot. Amazing location, beautiful beach , Bruno is very helpful and always with a smile, they have canoe and sup that you can take and explore the area as well as snorkelling equipment, the breakfast is very good, on the back of the hotel is a jungle , better use shoes especially if you decide to take the left side it is really amazing if you are lucky you will see monkeys, you have to remember that this is a hotel in the jungle so that means that everything can not be perfect, the water is not very hot , in the night you may not have electricity all the time , there is humidity so the towels and the clothes are not easy to dry but it is truly amazing and you must go…

Only Talking about the Restaurant: Prices are way too high and the staff is very inattentive and in a bad mood. I would say it was a bad service but in fact it was just no service at all, as they didn’t come to our table to collect our order after 20mins of waiting - even though there were almost no other customers and we were sitting in front of the counter. Wouldn’t recommend to go!! (Been there 6th of January 2025)

(Translated by Google) It's very beautiful here. Both above and below the water. Especially the below-water part is of a beauty that unfortunately doesn't last long. It's being destroyed by barbecue boats that throw trash into the water. Paper with mayonnaise, bones, cans, bags, plastic cups, straws, cigarette butts. They play funk music so loud that you can't even talk 100 meters away. In addition, there were about 80 jetskis competing, above the corals, above the fish that are the reason for the beauty of the place! We know that these machines ruin the peace above the water. But it's 10x worse below the water, it disrupts life there, right? I wanted to cry, I felt so sad. Is it not possible to enjoy the beauty without destroying it?

(Translated by Google) Magnificent little cove, turquoise water and fish in abundance, an open-air aquarium. Keep your eyes peeled, there are magnificent sea turtles to observe. I recommend arriving very early in the morning (fishermen or taxi boats can take you there for a few euros). After a certain hour it's really no longer pleasant (large boats full of tourists, loud music, drop anchor and greatly degrade the tranquility and magic of the place).

(Translated by Google) A stunning place. The center of almost all the tours offered in Abraao, and for good reason. The clear, blue waters, which give it its name, have plenty of fish to see. They sell coconut sweets that take you to the boat to die for. Don't miss out on trying them. (Original) Un lugar impresionante. Lopes Mendes Beach is a remote and undeveloped gem, offering a serene escape with its pristine white sand, almond trees, and stunning mountain views. Accessible via a private hike or with the guidance of a local expert, reaching this natural wonder is an enriching experience that allows for a deep connection with nature. Despite being recognized as one of the world's top beaches, it remains relatively secluded, providing ample space for visitors to find their own tranquil spot along the 1.
A paradise, beauty beyonds any words all around, thin clean bright sand dazzling us under a beautiful sky, definitively one of the most amazing beaches I have seen in years. There is a bit of hiking to get there,an around 20 minutes walk across a stunning forest, we saw colorful birds in it and eagles on the beach.
Sardanapolo — Google review
Soft soft white beach when you step on the sand its like stepping into fresh snow that crunch sound! We walked from Abraão beach through the forest. If you are a hiker I recommend it, its a 2hr hike. BUT I’m not a hiker so took us 3 hrs while it was beautiful and we saw monkeys and birds if i do it again I’d take a boat so i have more time on the beach
Meytha A — Google review
Very good beach if you are a surfer. There are large waves there. If you want to swim this isn't the place. There are surfing schools on the beach, stands with drinks. There is no taxi boat that you can take from there (unless you have arranged pick up in advance).

This place is SURREAL! We got to visit this beach early in the morning and it was a magical moment alone in the world! There is a small walk of around 15 minutes to get there, if you are lucky enough you will spot monkeys and birds !
Estefania N — Google review
One of the most beautiful beach if ever seen. The sand is really white like in the movies and the water is so clean and nice. Once you there you don’t want to leave I promise you! A must see when you visit Ihla Grande! I recommend to hike to the beach it’s quiet challenging but nice to climb up and down through the tropical forest. And as mentioned before, definitely worth it
Zoltán S — Google review
Very long sandy beach. Apparently once voted among the best beaches in the world but I don't see why, as it is not very special or photogenic. The life guards mark most of the beach unsafe to swim and only leave a small part open in front of their watch tower. But that part is so shallow that it's not possible to swim there and beyond that there are huge waves so again not swimmable. The best thing about the beach is that it is so big you can find a spot with no one around. The trail to get there from the drop off point is about 20 minutes and you can see some cute looking monkeys there if you're lucky.
Petr V — Google review
What a beach 🏝 a real paradise beach. The beach is very long so you can easily find a suite spot away from the crowds. There is little food and drinks for sale on the beach, so make sure you bring some before you leave. It is also a bit of a muddy hike trough the jungle before you get to the beach, so best to wear the right footwear
Joachim S — Google review
Absolutely incredible beach. The sand is fine. The ground is clean. The waves are huge! We hiked 3 hours from Vila de Abraão and it was absolutely challenging and worth it. A must see when on Ilha Grande and Brazil!

Túnel Maria Nossar (Túnel que Chora) is a significant historical site in the Vale do Café, inaugurated in the presence of the imperial family for the purpose of creating a railway to transport coffee. This tunnel, like many other structures in the area, was built by slaves using rough stone and measures 95m long, 5m wide, and 3.5m high. Its peculiar name "Tunnel that Cries" raises curiosity about its origins.
Great Tunnel built by Brazilian slaves end to end.

(Translated by Google) Casa da Hera belonged to Joaquim José Teixeira Leite, a coffee commissioner in the region. The house was built in the first half of the 19th century and Joaquim bought it to live in with his future wife, Ana Esméria Pontes França. The two lived with their two daughters on the property. Eufrasia Teixeira Leite is the only sister portrayed in the house and, after her death in 1930, she left the house and the lands of the farm were inherited by the Institute of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Today, it is managed by IBRAM. The house is very well preserved and the tour is guided, and it is advisable to book in advance; however, you can leave your name at the reception and wait for the next group of visitors. The preserved furniture and rooms serve as illustration for the guide's account, which tells the whole story in detail. It is a journey through Brazil's past and tells a little about the importance of coffee and the luxurious life of the barons in the times of the big house and the sensation. The gardens on the property are worth a visit and the bamboo tunnel is a must-see! There are also dolls in the outdoor area that pay homage to Mariana Crioula and Manuel Congo, who led the slave rebellion in Vassouras, the largest in the Paraíba Valley. The guided tour of the house and the tour of the property are free and well worth it. No food or drink is sold on site. There are bathrooms.

It's a favorite spot for surfers and bodyboarders, with strong winds and waves making it ideal for water sports. Hello tourists. This is RECREIO beach.A strip of sand for about 10 km or so.It´s after Barra and before Macumba and the stone. It was wild back them, nobody at all. There you see a labor city and none peasant, athlete or entertainer. It´s only sand,no stones or bricks in the way.I remeber a nature with stone in the middle of the beach ahead ,in Prainha and macumba is cut by a stone also. The quiosques still about old generation,I think few of woods, closed long time with only a few fidel customers or so.It´s about yourselve. The beach has nothing actually. If you have cash or seek hanging or so.I loved do this course by myself, admire femsle athletes and very loyals. But even for a bolshoii dancer she would complain a lot about so much studies in her country to see litter, low wages and people struggling close to her.And many other complains.... Was good, her coach would avise her.I am sure she understand only of practice. Maybe kyte needs crowds or close to civilization, nobody is up to show and desert brazil. This is our biggest beach and desert so far. No safe guards, dangerous waters. No kind at all. Good walk!
