Incredibly interesting tour to this important museum on an historic plantation which is run by very passionate people who are really dedicated to keep history of the area alive. Guide Jaqueline couldn’t have been any more knowledgeable and she was also a great story teller.

We were with our sailing vessel at the Commewijne River. We visited Bakkie during our river trip. We were warmly welcomed when we arrived with our dinghy. First we were served a glass of homemade marva iced tea from a plant in the garden. The tour of the museum and garden was inspiring and very informative. Bas and Marsha have put a lot of effort into making the Bakkie plantation a beautiful spot. I felt the respect for the Surinamese people, history and environment everywhere. They have a great story about how they started renovating the plantation. First they dug out the creek, not for two weeks but for nine months. And then fortunately a new plan was born. You have to go to the museum yourself to get inspiration and learn more about Suriname. The (vegetarian) lunch was wonderful as well, home made with veggies from the garden. I think it is ( or can be) an healing spot for all the bad things that have happend to the slaves in the past. I hope that Bas and Marsha will continue their work with the good spirit and courage for the next years to reduce discrimination and build solidarity.
Lisa H — Google review
A place lost in time. The owner of the museum is working hard to keep the history of this unique place alive. New floodgate and dikes are build to protect Bakki from flooding. Walkway paved with concrete tiles and boatdock is made from concrete.

We had a great time at Plantage Bakkie! Hosts Bas and Marsha did a very good job in explaining their story, the plantation history and their private collection. Also guide Jacquelin did a good job on the way to Bakkie. The tour was in dutch, because the whole group was dutch speaking. An arrangement could be made for a boat to pick us up from Frederiksdorp and then collect the other people of the group along the river. Tours are not every day of the week, so make sure to reach out via their website.

Plage des Hattes

Mentioned on
1 list
Beach
Outdoor Activities
Plage des Hattes, also known as Awala Beach, is a significant nesting site for various species of sea turtles, with the giant leatherback turtles being the most prominent. These majestic creatures, some weighing up to 600kg, come ashore from April to July to lay their eggs. The hatching season occurs between July and September when visitors can witness the young turtles making their way into the sea.
Awala Beach, located in French Guiana, is renowned for its significance as a nesting site for sea turtles. Several species of turtles visit the beach to lay their eggs, offering a unique opportunity to witness this natural wonder. The most common turtle species that can be found nesting on Awala Beach is the Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), the largest of all living turtles. These majestic creatures can reach impressive sizes, with some individuals exceeding 6 feet (1.8 meters) in length. They are known for their distinctive leathery carapace and their ability to dive to incredible depths. The nesting season for Leatherback Turtles typically occurs between April and August, with the peak nesting months being May and June. During this time, female turtles make their way to the beach under the cover of darkness to dig their nests and deposit their eggs. It is an awe-inspiring sight to witness the massive turtles emerging from the ocean and laboriously making their way up the sandy shore. In addition to Leatherback Turtles, other species that may occasionally visit Awala Beach include Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata). While less common than Leatherbacks, they also contribute to the rich biodiversity of the area. To observe the nesting process, it is important to join organized tours or guided excursions led by local experts who can provide valuable insights while ensuring the safety and well-being of the turtles. These tours often take place at night to coincide with the turtles' nesting activities. Visiting Awala Beach during the turtle nesting season offers a unique and unforgettable experience. It allows you to witness the incredible journey of these ancient creatures and to play a part in their conservation efforts. Remember to respect the guidelines provided by the tour guides and authorities to ensure the protection of the turtles and their nesting sites.

Devil's Island

Mentioned on

Island
Nature & Parks
Devil's Island, part of the infamous Iles du Salut in French Guiana, was once a French penal colony known for its harsh conditions and isolation. The island housed political prisoners and hardened criminals in nightmarish cells with remains of bunk-bed brackets still visible. Despite its dark past, visitors can appreciate the beautiful views and natural surroundings while learning about the island's history. Monkeys and other wildlife add to the allure of this historically significant yet visually stunning destination.
We visited from Aruba it is so beautiful let te picture tell the story!
Linda L — Google review
We were able to ride around Devils island where political prisioners were wed kept including the famous Dreyfuss. Entry to Devils idkznd is so trecherous that they used a cable car from Royal Island to transport prisoners and guards. The Royal island offers a great view of the life of those who were here to maintain life including guards, nuns, and priests
Toni T — Google review
Beautiful islands, nice views despite the fact that they used to be the penal colony. We only visited the Royale, it was enough to give us an idea of how terrible the lives of the prisoners there used to be. It was a nice walk around the island even though the temperature was high about 87 degrees Fahrenheit because there were lots of trees which gave us shade along with some breeze from the ocean. Lots of monkeys and other birds and animals. I i
Grace L — Google review
You stand on the nicer sister islands and squint across the water at the real thing, the little rock with palm trees that ate men for breakfast. Boats do not even dock there, the shoreline is teeth, the surf is mean, so the tours drop you on Ile Royale and you stare across like a chump with a camera. That part is real, and kind of perfect, because Devil’s Island was always about not getting where you want to go. Life magazine ran a photo essay in 1938 that basically said shut this place down already, picture book to end the colony, polite American fury in glossy pages. It lands harder when you know the numbers, seven hundred shipped in a year, about seven hundred gone by year’s end from disease or escape or just disappearing into the green, population stays the same, a loop with no mercy. Rene Belbenoit wrote it straighter than anyone, first in Dry Guillotine and then in Hell on Trial, no hero cape, just sores and hunger and the slow grind, the kind of writing that smells like wet canvas and bad soup. He did his time, he ran, he made it to the States, then he put the bagne on trial from a safe chair with a sharp memory. If you read one voice before you come here, read him. The island itself is smaller than the legend, one of three little dots called the Salvation Islands, ten miles off the Guiana coast, pretty from far away, poison up close. Dreyfus stared at that same sky from a hut and the republic stared back and nearly went blind. History calls it an islet, I call it a bad idea that lasted a century too long. Come for the story, not the selfie. Walk the cells on Royale, listen for the sea hitting those black rocks, then go sit with Belbenoit in your bag, and let the book do what travel never can, which is tell you why a place like this should stay empty. Notes for the curious Tours land on Ile Royale, Devil’s Island itself is off limits, the colony system in French Guiana ran from the 1850s to the 1950s, more than seventy thousand convicts were sent over that span, and the place finally shut after enough witnesses put the truth in print.
Jason B — Google review
“Devil’s Island: The hottest vacation spot… literally. If you’ve ever thought, ‘Hey, I’d love to experience prison, but with a tropical twist,’ then this is the place for you! From the second I arrived, the VIP treatment was clear: private accommodations (because, well, there’s no one else here), and the staff is… invisible? I didn’t see a single person except a crab that seemed particularly judgmental about my footwear. Activities are top-notch—like ‘Find Potable Water’ and ‘Dodge the Poisonous Bugs!’ Dining options include ‘Whatever Washed Up on Shore’ or ‘Air for Dinner,’ and let’s just say the portion sizes were… slimming. And the nightlife? Oh, it’s electric! Every night there’s a lively, unscheduled mosquito rave in your tent. Plus, the sounds of crashing waves and distant howls ensure you’ll never sleep through the terror. Overall, it’s a solid 5 stars if you’re into rugged survival or just want to feel like a pirate who’s made some really poor life choices. Highly recommend—for my in-laws.”
Vitaliy S — Google review
It was super cool to see and learn all the history in person. The island is beautiful and the monkeys are adorable.
Lindsey B — Google review
This island was used as a prison in the 19th and 20th centuries and it was a place to keep exiled political prisoners, and because of the violent treatment of the guards with the prisoners, it became known as Devil's Island. Alfred Dreyfus is among the most famous people incarcerated in this prison. The movie Papion was inspired by the real life story of one of the escaped prisoners of this place.
Hossein M — Google review
I was wrongfully accused of treason and imprisoned here for many years. It was my good fortune to meet an Italian priest who educated me in the arts & sciences as well as sword fighting. I escaped with the body of my dear deceased friend, the priest, and with a hidden fortune and help from pirates, I made my way home and took my revenge on those who stole my life. Alas, that is a tale for another post. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend a stay on the island.

Salvation's Islands, a captivating archipelago steeped in history, once served as a notorious penal colony. Today, it offers visitors a chance to delve into its intriguing past while basking on pristine white sandy beaches adorned with swaying coconut palms. Nature enthusiasts will be delighted by the unique wildlife that calls these islands home. A recent visitor shared their enchanting experience on Ile Royale, where they stayed in a charming caretaker's cabin surrounded by vibrant animals like capuchins and macaws.
This island is excellent to rest, enjoying free time walking and knowing the historical heritage. In fact, Iles du Salut refers to a set of three islands: Ile du Diable, Ile Saint-Joseph and Ile Royale (the main).

(Translated by Google) Undeniably the treasure of French Guiana 🤩 If you have the opportunity to be in the country, you must plan a trip to the Salvation Islands. To set foot in this exceptional place, you'll need to find a local service provider and the right offer for you. I highly recommend the catamaran crossing; it's all the more enjoyable to be able to lie on the boat's net and enjoy the sun with the gentle sound of the waves crashing against the hull. After a 15km / 1.5 hour ride, more or less rough depending on the wind, you will arrive in front of the Salvation Islands archipelago. Historically a major penal colony, they are now Guiana's cultural treasures for their heritage and biodiversity. You will have the chance to visit Île Royale and Île Saint Joseph; Devil's Island is off-limits to the public. The fauna, flora and architecture will amaze you.

The Guiana Space Centre, also known as the Centre Spatial Guyanais, is a must-visit destination in French Guiana. To tour this space center and witness a rocket launch, visitors need to make arrangements in advance. The three-hour bus tours offer an insightful exploration of the massive launch pad and provide a captivating experience. While the tours are typically conducted in French, English explanations can be provided at bus stops for smaller groups.
Great to learn about euro space launch missions. You can see the launches from designated areas so find out when they have a launch and plan accordingly. When no launch planned for a few days, you can go into some of the areas close up
Omar T — Google review
The guided bus tour was really awesome and super cool that it was free! We enjoyed learning about the space port and seeing Mission Control. The museum part was not as exciting. It feels very geared toward little kids, so for us (a group of adults), it was not very exciting and felt a bit like a waste of the admit fee. I would definitely do the tour again, but probably not the museum.
Brittney A — Google review
Our group of 17 international tourists were able to get a complete bus tour today. We made reservations in advance. Note that you must have passport or French ID to enter. Tours may be cancelled at any time for launches, which are not shared for security reasons. ALLAN guided us through many sites inc a control room, rocket booster storage area, and several areas that showed the process of the construction of various parts of the rocket. The vast area offers a solar panel field with one more under construction and another ready to be started. The museum is interesting for just enough detail to the scientific process. Bus and some areas are acccessible by steps Bring water, walking shoes even though there is not much walking, hat and sunscreen. The center offered a museum and gift shop. The museum includes interactive activities for adults and for kids. Kids can build their own drawing of a rocket ship and followed the path of a rocket shift in an interactive exhibit. The gift shop offers, educational kids, activities, postcards, hats, and trademark T-shirts.

Must do in Kourou, super interesting tour of the facilities. Normally English explanations can be given at bus stops but my group was smaller, so one of the guides was so nice to offer to sit next to me and give me explanations on the go. The tour mostly takes place on the bus and took for me about 2.5 hours.
Petr V — Google review
Attended the French Guyana Space Centre tour which took about 3.5 hours including registration and waiting time. Tour was very interesting with background and history of the rocket launches and visits to the different rocket launch pads by bus. The tour was conducted in French but the tour guide was very gracious and kind to separately explain to me in English. Fascinating and worthwhile tour

I couldn’t leave my backpack anywhere. It even had the sign of a wardrobe on a door but they just kept saying “non”, while laughing. So I had to leave. Probably because I spoke in english and not french. Confirms the stereotype of french people!

The tours are currently not possible as a launch is being prepared for the first quarter of 2025! A real disappointment and one wonders how tours impact months long launch preparations (others launch rockets every other day). Seems like a travel back in time :-). As for the museum, great for small kids with lots of educational exhibits but really not interesting for someone interested in past and current space science and technology. Better go to any of the NASA sites…

Nestled in the picturesque town of Kintzheim, Alsace, Montagne des Singes is a delightful animal park that spans an impressive 24 hectares. Since its opening in 1969, it has become home to over 240 charming magots. Visitors can immerse themselves in this unique environment from late March through mid-November. The park offers a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and observe these fascinating creatures up close while enjoying the serene beauty of the surrounding landscape.
We visited the mountain on 10.11.24 We did the whole tour in 2 hours. At the beginning of the tour we saw few monkeys in the trees, they do not approach people. There are cases where no one sees monkeys.

(Translated by Google) Nice big walk or short hike depending on preferences We started with the short section to reach the viewpoint via the botanical trail. Lots of signs to familiarize us with the vegetation while being greeted by toucan songs. Afterwards, the point of view is worth it! It goes up very hard the last 300 meters. But the view over all of Kourou, the CSG and the surrounding area is worth it. The return is less complicated and the trails are still not perfectly passable, especially after periods of rain. Make sure you wear suitable, waterproof shoes. BE CAREFUL: we saw a snake crossing less than 10m from us and it seemed like it was a grage tiles but not sure! It couldn't be more deadly in the event of a bite... Bring a stick, in some places the vegetation hides the path which makes the potential danger closer.

Guiana Botanical Garden

Nestled in the heart of Tonate, the Guiana Botanical Garden is a delightful oasis that showcases an impressive array of tropical plants, trees, and vibrant flowers. Established in the late 19th century on a former sugar estate, this garden not only offers a serene escape but also features the enchanting Seven Ponds—an important burial site for notable figures.
Amazing orchid collection. Passionate people and a very nice visit. People having no clue about plants often find themselves very much interested during guided tours. Locals can buy a year pass to come more often if they want. They also propose nice products like locally grown vanilla.

You feel a true osmosis between the species; it's fascinating! A magical moment during the visit: we were lucky enough to observe a mother sloth with her baby, a moment suspended in time. The garden is still evolving: an area dedicated to prehistoric plants with dinosaur skeletons is currently being installed, promising an even more spectacular visit in the future! There is also a section of the garden dedicated to cacti, carnivorous plants, and vanilla cultivation. Nestled in the heart of Macouria, French Guiana, the Guiana Zoo is a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. This remarkable wildlife park showcases the incredible biodiversity of the region, featuring an array of species that call South America home. As you wander through its lush landscapes, you'll encounter majestic jaguars, playful monkeys, fascinating reptiles, and a vibrant assortment of birds.
We had travelled from Guyana, Suriname and now French Guiana looking for wildlife and in just a few hours we saw so many animals, albeit most were in enclosures. Although some enclosures seemed small many were spacious for some of the rescued animals. We also saw other animals roaming free and enjoying this large reserve.

It is so fun to feel like you are walking through the jungle for this zoo. I’m from the US, so seeing the animals that are more native to southern America was interesting to me! Make sure to check out the rope bridge along the path (it can be a little easy to miss if you aren’t looking). I think it’s worth a try for anyone in Guyane looking for something fun!

I think if it is your first time in French Guiana or in the jungle/amazon forest this should be your starting point. The staff is incredibly nice, they were speaking english and also suggested other places worth visiting around. In the zoo there are a lot of bueatifull animals, thankfully as I have understood there are in the zoo because of animal rescue (mostly). Fortunately there are a lot of English descriptions. I really liked the jungle around it was almost like a meditation exercise

It's a good way to know and see all the animals in Guiana especially pumas, Jaguars and eagles since it's almost impossible and too dangerous to see in the wild however closures are small in general. It's almost impossible for some birds to fly freely so I hope they'll change the environment for them.

Phare de Fort Cépérou is a historic fortification situated in Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana. Built in the 1640s by French settlers to defend the city, it has undergone several modifications over time. The fort offers a panoramic view of Cayenne and the Atlantic Ocean and is named after an indigenous chief. While it requires some uphill climbing to reach, visitors can enjoy free entry and take in stunning sunset views of the city from this unique vantage point.

Not much to see there except views of the town. Free entry. There were some weird guys around noon when I went to the fort, they started to talk to me in a hostile way with brazilian accent. Luckily nothing happened as there were other people around, but I felt I could have been attacked or robbed (that's the downside of the French policy of "multiculturalism" and "open doors"). Be careful.

(Translated by Google) Mixed review for this museum located right next to Place des Palmistes The strong points: - The place, an old Creole house which puts us in a special atmosphere - a superb collection of insects which is worth the detour - stuffed animals which are also worth the detour because they are specific to the species found in Guyana - some beautiful works on the history of Guyana and slavery The weak points: - The museum needs a refresh, we feel the lack of resources - a lack of explanations and information. For insects I find it a shame that we cannot have the name of each species. This lack of information is found throughout the museum, which nevertheless offers very interesting themes. Way to go deeper! Moyen d'approfondir davantage !

Hotel des Palmistes

Hotel
Neighborhoods
Hotel des Palmistes offers modest yet charming accommodations with a casual restaurant and bar, along with complimentary Wi-Fi. The hotel's back yard is particularly delightful on hot days, while the front patio provides a lovely view of Palmiste Square in the evening. Guests can savor the specialty "Crevette cocktail" from the menu, although service may not be top-notch. The location is ideal, offering a relaxed atmosphere and good food, though prices are slightly high. Room no.
Service is sloppy but their veranda is the place to go for an early evening drink. This place is an icon of Cayenne.

We only stopped a couple of hours and expected to try the local cuisine but it's more Caribbean style than Typical Guyanese or amazonian cuisine and then a bit expensive for what it is. On the other hand the service was very friendly and quite fast.

Very nice back yard especially in a hot day. Go for the front patio in the evening with a nice view over the Palmiste Square with the light streets on and people buzzing around. Not worth the money they're charging for the hotel room. At least not until construction is complete as they're creating new rooms on the 3rd floor. There is no elevator and the stairways are long. Construction noise starts at 8am and the hallways have plenty of sawdust. The wifi doesn't get as far as the rooms.

These French people were very barbaric and were very unhelpful. The internet didn't work. Everyone in the restaurant and hotel was rude. I wish they go out of business. You pay a lot of money and get nothing of value in return. Buy a tent and sleep outside. At least you won't have to deal with those nasty French people.

Heritage Charm The hotel is housed in a lovely heritage building, which by itself is a sightseeing tourist attraction. The property alludes charm and character from every nook and corner - be it the lovely restaurant and killer terrace seating, or the decor of the room and the common areas. Definitely, the best option in town, if you are looking for a historic vibe but don't want to splurge a lot. However. the biggest letdown of the stay was the extremely poor connectivity. The Internet barely worked. Television never functioned due to very weak signals. And even the credit card machine was struggling because of weak connectivity. Apart from this, the hotel is a jewel in the old town. The reason i am giving 3 stars is because of the weak connectivity and the poor hospitality & service. LOCATION: IN the very heart of the old town DINE + DRINK: The Bar Palmistes is THE place in town - to see and be seen. The vibe in the evening (especially in the balcony) is just too fantastic to be missed! ROOM: We stayed in Room 1, so this review is based on that; VIEW:Lovely view of the Place des Palmistes and the swinging Coconut trees and colonial buildings; SIZE: Spacious enough for 2 adults and simple baggage; AIR-CON: Perfectly functioning cooler that helped in setting the perfect room temperature; BED: Comfortable bed that played the expected part of putting me to sleep; BATHROOM: Stand-in shower; TOILETRIES: Cosmetics by L’occitane! FACILITIES: No Gym or Pool, Pure Guyanese chill SERVICE: Friendly staff that took care of all our needs with a smile, but in general the service levels of the restaurant and bar staff can improve a lot! Speed or service, attention to customers, and ability to tackle foreign visitors - all great areas for improvement!

If you think of what would be possible when the amazonian rain forest is around the corner than it makes no sence to walk there to not really see much.

(Translated by Google) Restaurant that doesn't look like much in the middle of the Hyper U shopping mall. All the cuisine is homemade, on site and fresh. We ate well there, the service was good and the atmosphere was okay. (Original) Restaurant qui ne paie pas de mine au millieu de la galerie marchande du Hyper U. (Translated by Google) Great place for lunch, I'm never disappointed, the dishes are very good, local products are also highlighted, it's faultless from starter to dessert (even the bread is excellent). The quality of the products and the warm welcome make us completely forget the fact of being in a shopping mall (positive point, the place is quiet and air-conditioned). We arrived at midday and were served quickly. The restaurant also offers homemade products for sale to take away. I can only recommend this high quality restaurant on Cayenne.

My husband had the salad of the day which had no taste and as for me I had the duck breast which was much overcooked served with vegetable puree which was too salty. We found it to be really expensive for what it is.

Plages de Montjoly is a stunning, unspoiled stretch of golden sand that invites visitors to bask in the sun while surrounded by lush greenery. This picturesque beach serves as a nesting ground for giant turtles, adding an element of natural wonder to your visit. While swimming may be risky due to health advisories and water conditions, it's still a fantastic spot for fishing or simply soaking up the sun.

(Translated by Google) We arrived in the morning around 6:30 a.m. to possibly witness the emergence of baby leatherback turtles, and we were lucky enough to find them emerging from the sand and heading towards the ocean for a long journey. The presence of a woman from a turtle protection association made the experience even better because she explained to us why we shouldn't help the baby turtles when they were struggling (they develop their muscles from the nest to the ocean, and helping them by carrying them to the water would handicap them later in the water). Everyone was respectful, and our presence probably scared off the birds, which allowed the whole group to reach the sea safely. It was a wonderful experience. The path is well marked and has a picnic shelter halfway along the way. We observed a squirrel monkey, a stick insect, a tomcat, and a multitude of birds. We completed it in 2 hours and 10 minutes, with 50 minutes of very slow walking to look for any sloths, so I think it can easily be done in 1 hour 30 minutes or 40 minutes. Easy parking at the bottom of the trailhead; I highly recommend it 😊 (Original) Très beau sentier, sans aucune difficulté, bien ombragé avec de belles vues sur l'océan et la retenue d'eau. (Translated by Google) Absolutely avoid! Even though I paid for the service and provided proof of the voucher, the captain declared that I wasn't on the passenger list. After asking to wait for everyone to settle in, he conceded that I could sit with my intern behind the galley, as if it were a favor, even though I had the message from the agency specifying that the captain's supervisor confirmed that we were on the list. As we were disembarking on the island, Captain Joël suddenly became angry while we were isolated behind the galley, demanding cash on the grounds that proof of the transfer hadn't been brought. Fortunately, unlike other phone companies, I had signal reception, and I was able to prove the transfer. The crossing continued with a heavy heart. Upon arrival, the captain invited people to leave positive reviews, and looking at us both, he added, as if to challenge us again, "or negative." I hesitated to file a complaint against what I considered to be an attempted scam. The next day, I had also booked Ilet La Mère and waited in vain for the boat. Obviously, I was so docile that both the company and the captain walked all over me.

It is very interesting as it has an ancient history from the indigenous time, although it is already growing a lot, but this way you can see the prominence that this small place shows and represents many things for several lands since it has disappeared a lot due to the city's measures, especially in the indigenous lands, which are more affected by these evolutions of the city. It is a fundamental space for preserving and valuing the culture, history, languages and identity of the region's native peoples. Kuahi is a living place for the transmission of knowledge, beauty and creations.

(Translated by Google) The Kuhaí Museum was founded after a ten-year initiative by representatives of indigenous peoples from the far north of Amapá. Its goal is to help preserve and disseminate culture and, at the same time, provide alternative sources of income for these communities through the planned marketing of artisanal products. The collection has more than 300 pieces, most of which were produced on commission by the museum together with indigenous communities, who also participate in the management of the institution. It is worth mentioning that there is a good frequency of French people coming from Cayenne - French Guyanese. I, Hudson F.S., recommend it. Eu Hudson F.S. Recomendo.

(Translated by Google) Kuahi is a legitimate museum of the indigenous peoples of the region, managed by them. Unfortunately, it has been neglected by the government, which has failed to maintain its physical structure. As a result, the important artifacts of the people are under threat and they are prevented from presenting new exhibitions and from carrying out museum activities and serving the population.

Stadium
Sights & Landmarks
Arenas & Stadiums
The Milton de Souza Correa Stadium is uniquely positioned along the Equator, ensuring that the midfield line aligns perfectly with this geographic marker. In each soccer game held there, the teams not only defend their own goals but also symbolically represent the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This arrangement adds a geopolitical dimension to matches played at this stadium, reminiscent of a grand game of Risk. The second half brings a switch in roles as the teams exchange goals.

This stadium is just in the middle of the Ecuador line! Brilliant!

The stadium is built so that the midfield line follows the Equator exactly. In every soccer game there, each team isn't just defending its own goal. One side is defending the Northern Hemisphere, and the other side the Southern Hemisphere, like a giant game of Risk. But the geopolitical overtones switch in the second half, of course, when the teams swap goals.
