Archeological complex El Brujo

Archaeological museum
Museums
Ancient, Moche-era archeological complex with ruins, art, wall designs, a mummy & various artifacts.
We started our trip at 10 am at Trujillo center and finished around 3:30pm.The pieces of art is great . The lady of chaos is the unique piece in the north of Peru in such a great preservation, showing the importance of this woman in that place. You will need to pay s/10 for entry to the museum. I will recommend to accept only payments in order to avoid problems to people who don't carry cash. Toilets very clean and everything well organized.
Henreli C — Google review
I spent some really interesting hours in the archaeological complex El Brujo. It covers thousands of years of uninterrupted human occupation. The complex is situated about 70 km north of Trujillo. It is about a 45 minutes drive from Trujillo and absolutely worth the trip. The latest excavations carried out at the pyramid called Huaca Cao have revealed a ceremonial site that is 1800 years old. It was built with the intention to bury a royal person. They found a mummified young female person. The condition of the mummy was so good that the could see tattooes on different parts of her body. We could see the body in the museum. She was called: La dama de Cao, (The Lady of Cao) and we could see a lot of artefacts and jewellery. After seeing the museum, we walked around in the huaca, and it was really interesting. This was the Moche culture, and I recommend reading about the Moche before you visit El Brujo. And it is also interesting to make a stop in the nearby village Magdalena de Cao. Lots of nice paintings on the walls of the houses.
Alfhild H — Google review
I most see if you already saw Chan Chan, Huaca del sol and Huaca de la Luna. They have a " mummified woman ruler". The site is one hour away from the city of Trujillo but the trip is worth it.
Gian S — Google review
Awesome site! Didn’t see a witch or wizard but the paintings and walls were very impressive! One of the better sites around Trujillo, and quite straightforward to reach without a tour, just leave yourself plenty of time for the return as the colectivo was slow to fill back from Magdalena
Tristan R — Google review
The archaeological site of El Brujo is absolutely amazing! The ruins are impressive and the museums are very well organized and informative. This was an important ceremonial complex of the Moche culture, dating back to around 100–750 AD. You can still see the remains of pyramids, temples, and incredible murals that tell stories of rituals and daily life. One of the highlights is learning about the Señora de Cao, a female ruler discovered here, whose tomb and artifacts are beautifully displayed in the museum. A fascinating place that combines history, culture, and stunning views of the coast—definitely worth the visit!
Adrian H — Google review
This place was see inspiring considering it was built 1000 years before the Incas. You could easily spend all day walking around
David M — Google review
Not quite as impressive size wise as some of the other archeological sites we had visited. However the number of tombs discovered so far really give an insight to the changing burial techniques over time. A lack of funds has temporarily stopped any further excavation. If you visit Peru it is still worth the effort.
David F — Google review
Pyramids nowhere near as impressive as later Inca, Azrec or Mayan structures and they have been greatly eroded by rain. However the excavations show an advanced culture fir ghe time. The museum gives an excellent interpretation and there is a room full of gold clothing, ornaments etc that the Spaniards missed giving us all a better insight into the distant. past

It's not a huge place. It looks nice and well cared. However, there are not many places to sit comfortably, it's a open area so one must be aware and noise of the cars when there is traffic around makes it not an ideal place to relax completely.

Overrated. Is just a street with few statues, completely out of the place. You can easily notice that they put it there with no sense, it does not match with the style of the city. Is "nice" for people living there but I wouldn't recommend it as a tourist attraction.

(Translated by Google) It is a church that is similar to some European churches, it is very large and very striking from every angle around it. And it has a lot of history, it has volunteers who help many people; you can take tours. Some information I can share: It was erected by Mons. Daniel Figueroa Villón (RIP), first Bishop of Chiclayo, on June 7, 1957. Since then it has been operating under the official name of “San Antonio de Padua” Parish. On June 22, 1957, Fr. José Guereta Zurinaga O.F.M. was appointed first parish priest. The first Cooperating Vicars (since 1984 they are called parochial vicars), Br. Juan Bautista Gamarra, Br. Francisco Campos Zavaleta and Br. José Martínez Aliaga, were appointed on July 4, 1957. On March 12, 1958, Bishop Figueroa Villón, of pleasant memory, handed over the administration of this Parish to the Missionary Province of “San Francisco Solano” of Peru. (Original) Es una iglesia que tiene parecido a algunas iglesias europeas, es muy grande y muy llamativa desde cada angulo qué la rodea. From fresh produce to traditional crafts, this bustling marketplace has something for everyone. Visitors can explore stalls selling fish, meat, street food, and artisanal goods such as charms and herbal remedies. It's an ideal place for digital nomads to immerse themselves in local life and interact with friendly vendors while practicing their Spanish.
Really big market! You can find everything, the market is open but in sector, the one with fruits, the one with shoes, the one with medicinal plants, the part with meat and fish, the part with food etc...

A typical busy market place. Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables which are very ripe and ready to eat. Then there are plenty of fresh chickens, beef, fresh and salted fish. Also the spices and sauces that the Peruvian woman make and sell are simply amazing. Be sure to wonder down the cocoa isle even if just for the fragrance. There is alot of what i believe are imported goods from China like handbags, jewelry, tupperwares, cooling utensils and whatever else you can possibly need.

Huge amazing market where you can find everything you could possibly need. Many of the vendors and people were extremely welcoming and waved us over so we could take photos with them. You can ask anyone questions for what you need or what a particular item is. The Mercado de brujos has some really interesting trinkets, herbal remedies, and symbols for any ceremony you’d like to perform. Ayahuasca and San Pedro can be found as well. We ate cabrito at one of the food stalls and it was one of our favorite meals in Perú so far. You could explore the market for hours.

The Museum of the Royal Tombs of Sipan, located in northern Peru, is a remarkable pyramid-shaped establishment dedicated to exhibiting intricate funerary objects from the pre-Inca Royal Tombs of Sipan. Opened in November 2002, this world-class facility features a carefully curated collection displayed with great care and attention to detail. Photography is not allowed, and visitors must have their bags checked before entering.
Omg the museum recently had renovations and it looks amazing, there are professional guides who tell you great stories behind the pieces, great experience, be aware that you can’t bring large bags into the museum but they have an area where they store your belongs to pick up when ready to leave.

The Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum near Chiclayo is a must-visit if you love history and archaeology. The pyramid-style architecture itself reflects the ancient Moche culture, and inside you walk through the story of the Lord of Sipán step by step, from excavation to the stunning treasures found in his tomb. The gold, silver, ceramics, and textiles give a deep insight into the artistry and beliefs of the Mochica civilization. The museum is very well maintained — clean, organized, and carefully curated with proper lighting and security that protect these priceless artifacts. The exhibits are presented with respect and detail, making it easy to appreciate the importance of this culture in Peru’s history. Some explanations are only in Spanish and weekends can be a bit crowded, but overall it is one of the best museums in Peru and highly recommended 😊😊😊

David A — Google review
A well-laid out museum with some nice selection of Pre-Colombian artifacts across a large period of time. There are three floors to view, and all of the signs are in Spanish, so it helps if you can read some. The array of ceramics is quite impressive from the different time periods are quite impressive, as well as the well-preserved mummified remains on display. I tend to tour museums slower than almost anyone I know, and this only took 1.5 hours. If you can't read Spanish, and decide to visit here, you could view the whole place in 45 minutes or less. The entry cost is 8 soles. There was a fun display of fertility and sexuality artifacts while we visited as well (adults only it said).
Brian D — Google review
The Bruning Museum, though overshadowed by it's more illustrious neighbors, is still well worth a visit. What it lacks in shear quantity of gold and treasure it makes up for in the way it contextualizes the artifacts and history of the region. The collection is fascinating and beautiful and is organized so as to elucidate the succession of cultures and the ways in which they were influenced by their predecessors and neighbors. The museum also shows photographs and diagrams of how the artifacts were found and excavated. Very informative!

The Sicán National Museum is a captivating destination for those interested in the rich history and culture of Peru. Currently, the museum is refreshing its exhibits, which means some items may not be on display during your visit. However, this shouldn't deter you from exploring its stunning collection that showcases the artistry and heritage of the Sicán civilization. With beautifully curated displays, it offers an enriching experience for all who step inside.
A very good museum but only if you are really into understanding the old cultures. This museum isn't about flashy artifacts like the two museums in Lambayeque. Instead it focuses more on how things were done. The displays are a bit dated and the museum feels somewhat neglected. However, they are in the process of adding an addition so maybe the displays will get a makeover, too. In sum, this is out of the way and probably not of interest to the more casual tourist. But if you have a serious interest in archaeology it may be worth the time to visit.
Don M — Google review
Visited the Sicán National Museum on Friday, June 27, 2025. We arrived a bit past lunchtime, so admittedly we were a bit rushed and slightly museum-fatigued after visiting several archaeological sites recently. Still, this place offered a unique glimpse into a culture I had never heard of before—the Sicán, who succeeded the Moche and thrived in the La Leche River area between roughly 750–1375 AD, and were succeeded by the Chimor or Chimú culture. The exhibits are rich with symbolism and feature striking imagery: a recurring figure resembling the fanged deity (but fangless), holding a tumi knife in the left hand and a decapitated head in the right hand, often with snakes and claws. The collection includes an impressive array of gold artifacts, which were a highlight. Be aware: all signage and information is in Spanish, and no English-speaking guides were available during our visit. Fortunately, my Peruvian wife translated a few of the exhibits for us, but non-Spanish speakers might find it harder to engage deeply without a translator. Still, at just 8 soles for admission, it’s a very affordable stop for anyone interested in lesser-known pre-Columbian cultures. Also, note that we pretty much had the museum to ourselves. We only encountered one other small group at the end of our visit.
Rodney N — Google review
Don't waste your time (unless you have really nothing else left to do) ... This museum focused mostly on dioramas and replicas, rather than actual artefacts. Not well maintained - many lights are gone, making it difficult to see the few exhibits they have. Not really a big deal, but there is only Spanish description. It is also inconveniently located 2km from the town center. Overall, I'd focus on the many other sights in the area instead ...

Tucume pyramids

Sights & Landmarks
Tourist area known for its pre-Hispanic roots & twenty-six monumental architectural buildings.
Hidden gem on the north coast of Peru! Visited on Friday, June 27, 2025, close to closing time, but we never felt like we were being rushed along. This museum exceeded my expectations. It’s clean, modern, and thoughtfully curated—with high-quality exhibits presented in both Spanish and English. I enjoyed the storytelling format that ties modern local voices to their ancestral past, making the experience personal and immersive. It’s especially family-friendly, thanks to well-executed interactive and engaging displays for younger visitors. I also appreciated that the museum is located directly at the archaeological site, so no need to choose between history and location—you get both in one visit. After exploring the three excellent museums, you can head out to see multiple Huacas (pyramids) nearby, which adds depth and context to what you’ve just learned. The entrance fee is only 8 soles, so very reasonable. The only knock on the entire experience was the steep guide fee—80 soles for a Spanish-only tour, which felt high compared to other sites. We opted to explore on our own. If you're in the Lambayeque area and have the time, this is absolutely worth a visit—Túcume is one of the largest prehispanic sites on Peru’s north coast, with layers of Chimú and Lambayeque history that are vividly brought to life.
Rodney N — Google review
Nice place to visit. Can walk up a nearby hill to get a good view of the whole place and the surrounding area. There is a way to get in round the left hand side you follow a dirt track road in and you don't have to pay the entrance fee that way.

A bit lacking in explanation and not that much to visit, I think about 2/3 is closed but we walked around anyway. You can't visit the sacred stone (that was closed off). We did route a+b, which I would recommend, but route b is a quite a long walk to get to the excavation site, which you just walk around. There's a bit of information, but not much. If you are going to Trujillo, it might be better to save your visit for the Huaca de la Luna, which is 15min away from Trujillo and a better site to visit in my opinion.

Museum includes English and Spanish texts, so easy to visit as a foreign tourist. The rooms have nice artifacts and good information explains their origin and the people who crafted them. The museum gives a good oversight as to how the pyramids were used over time by the different cultures.

We caught a combi to Tucume from Lambayeque and then walked to the museum. After a long and very hot walk we arrived at the museum and were told the site is closed due to the rains, and only the museum was open, but without a discount in price. There was no way to view the pyramids up close. Then we couldn't find a moto to take us back to town, so we had another long walk back. I wouldn't recommend visiting unless you can confirm the site is open.
