(Translated by Google) It's a public place, easily accessible. The road is completely paved except for the last 50 meters or so. The view is breathtaking. It's a beautiful place. I recommend a 20- to 30-minute visit. It lacks basic services and should have more complete information about the historic site. Unfortunately, the filthy people don't take care of it, and behind one of the canyons is a public restroom (do not approach; the smell is unbearable).

been there twice. you need your passport and 4.50 usd each time you enter. Staff appear disinterested but the casino is clean with older machines and I enjoyed myself. Slots give the same payout as anywhere else, I think

I did not like that you had to pay to enter. Maybe it is a Chilean standard for casinos, but it was the first time I paid to enter a casino. The events they post on their website and on the sign out front are outdated.

Shopping mall
Shopping
Mall Plaza Calama is a modern retail paradise in the heart of Calama, Chile. This colossal mall offers a diverse shopping experience with well-known brands and supermarkets catering to every shopper's needs. Despite its cleanliness and organization, some visitors were disappointed by the lack of exterior spaces or lookout points to enjoy the stunning desert views. However, it remains a convenient spot for shopping and picking up groceries for self-catering while exploring the vibrant city of Calama.
A such big place, and nice people

Amazingly beautiful
Stephen F — Google review
It is much better than I expected mall in Calama, 4 only because there is no money exchange office in the shoping mall.
Mile L — Google review
The ugliest mall in Chile. Limited options of stores and food, dirty bathrooms, beggars and even stray dogs inside.
Alejandro A — Google review
This mall has a little bit of everything including a large Líder, or South American Wally World. At Líder, I bought a ladies' top sized S....No Boundaries brand. Just like back home in the States .... it's huge on me. It's comfortable, 60/40 cotton, and pretty good quality, But just big. Small isn't small here. It's more like Medium to Large. Also picked up some groceries for self-catering, which is the affordable way to travel around Chile. There's a good variety of specialty stores and some restaurants including a standalone sushi or Asian fusion type place. Mall is up-to-date and relatively new.
Ruth S — Google review
it's very good
Antonio V — Google review
Although it's mostly clean and well organized, I was dissapointed to find a complete lack of exterior spaces or a lookout. It feels quite claustrophobic which is a shame as Calama is sitting in the middle of the desert and the view would be amazing. Apart from this fact, the bathrooms were equipped and spacious.

A dream come true! Of course I cannot share photos or details, but this amazing place just keeps on giving. Huge mines, processing plants, smelter, roaster, refinery, a heaven for the copper enthusiast like I am. Most importantly though are the people. They have the 5 stars. I hope I come back again. Incredible visit to the ghost town of Chuquicamata and the biggest open mine in operation.
Tinyplanet C — Google review
(Translated by Google) Chile is the world's largest copper producer, and most of its production comes from Chuquicamata, the world's largest open-pit copper mine. It is approximately 6 km long, 4 km wide and 850 m deep. The mineral is extracted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 600 tons of material are extracted from its crater per day, of which only 1/3 is useful mineral. The waste is piled up on site in the form of artificial mountains over 150 meters high, forming sediment banks. To move so much material, a fleet of 130 giant trucks is used, each 7 meters high. The tires alone weigh 3 tons and measure over 3 meters. Codelco is a company in charge of copper mining and organizes free visits to the mine. We must wear a helmet and a lab coat. There is a structure on site where you can see the entire size of the mine. It is worth the visit. Vale a pena a visita.

One of the popular thermals en pica. This place has evolved over time. Now they have lockers, changing rooms and showers. Place to sit. At the entrance it has some spots to take pictures. The water is warm and the mud around is used for teraputic purposes.
Anita V — Google review
This natural hot springs will unwind you so good, you may not be able to drive back... the place is managed by the city hall, it charges you 3.000 CLP, about 4,5 USD. it has everything you need. Bathrooms, lockers, shower, nothing fancy, but clean and functional. The level of the water is between 1,0 to 5,0 meters, depending the day of the week (every two Mondays it reaches 5,0) better if you avoid weekends and holidays when is crowded
Eric S — Google review
Mondays and tuesdays level of water is raised. On these days the pool is limit dangerous due to submerged instalations. We were also (the first time) when water level was lower and it was excellent. Wednesday closed until 15h30 for cleaning.

The Corbeta Esmeralda Museum in Iquique is a life-size replica of the historic Chilean ship that played a significant role in the country's history. The original ship sank during the Battle of Iquique in 1879, and this museum offers guided tours to explore its quarters and learn about the battle. Visitors can see artifacts and appointments from the 1879 period, gaining insight into the naval history of Chile.
The “Esmeralda” corvette was the first steam-powered warship with which the Chilean Navy would enter a new stage of development. It was named after the Spanish frigate captured by Cochrane.

Bit expensive for foreigners, but a cool museum. With audiotour for a little extra payment
Jorn0910 — Google review
Great replica museum of the Esmeralda with well structured exhibits and with option of guided tours or in my case with the audio English guide. I learned a great deal about the historic significance of the ship and its role in the naval wars that Chile was involved in. I definitely recommend this museum as it’s unique!
San F — Google review
Fantastic replica of the ship and interesting museum with a very helpful and friendly staff. I stopped by around noon and, despite my limited Spanish, a worker there set me up with a self-guided audio tour (guided tours are only available in Spanish). This gave some interesting insight into one of Chile's important naval engagements during the War of the Pacific. I would definitely recommend a stop if you enjoy history! Afterwards, the fish market next door is also worth a visit.

Well done replica. Must have a guide. Pay the extra 1500 CLP for the audio equipment if your Spanish is not very good. Lots to learn.

Visited here on a friday. There was no bilingual guide, but you get the point of the history if you know basic spanish. You can also explore the boat without a guide.

Beautiful replica of a 19th century Chilean ship. The tour is in Spanish but they provide a book in English. Cost is 3500 CLP for foreigners. Definitely worth the experience.

Mall Zofri is a sprawling shopping complex in Iquique, Chile, offering two levels of retail therapy, personal services, a gastronomy hall, and a food court. The name 'Zofri' stands for Zona Franca de Iquique, reflecting its status as a duty-free zone where visitors can find an array of tax-free products. From electronics to perfumes and clothing, shoppers can take advantage of lower prices.
Unique Shopping Center in Iquique, Chile where you can get all types of items like electrical, sports, Cars items, Toys, Food items, Electronics items. Basically I am from India so I went there to purchase some food items like Tea, Poha, Indian masalas, Indian pulse items. If you are looking for Indian items you can visit Module no. 10 and module no. 96..... You will feel tired after roaming big mall, if you feel hungry you can go to food cart and enjoy good food.....
Bharatkumar P — Google review
This is a very large mall (possibly the largest in Northern Chile) and there is nothing "bad" about it.... but there is also very little "great" about it. Let me explain. The main point of the mall is that it sits in a tax-free area, so prices should be lower (because they are tax-free). Unfortunately this holds true for "duty free shop" like kind of items (mainly perfumes and alcohol), but the prices for electronics, for instance, as as high, if not higher, than in other stores (like Falabella, to name a Chilean one) and they are definitely way more expensive than buying on Amazon, even including shipping and import tax. The mall is also a bit of a labyrinth and would definitely benefit from maps being available on billboards (or, even better, touch screens) like they are in many other malls. Another unusual thing is that the very same products have different princes in different stores, so you have to "walk the mall" and compare prices if you want to pay as little as possible. Being in the free zone also means that it is not in the city, not far from in, but in an isolated area with absolutely nothing to do outside the mall.
Niccolo' B — Google review
Best place in Iquique for shopping. It's a no tax zone, so you can buy your stuff at lower rates. All the latest items are available here very fast. Alcohol and perfumes are available at the lowest rates in this mall. There is a big variety of them available here.

Actually its more like duty free zone and its great place for shoping 😎

This is where you go to buy your electronic gadgets in Iquique, it runs from 11am to 9pm except on Sundays. Items here do not pay Chilean taxes which makes them at least 20% cheaper than Santiago.
Dario R — Google review
It's very crowded can't even put it in words how much. Unfortunately prices aren't so great. You can get everything for the same price or cheaper in the internet. Most store owners know nothing about the product they paddle but would never admit it and just make everything they don't know up on the spot. They also have strong opinions and recommendations about their products despite the fact that they never bother to test anything or try using their stock in real life situations. For example people who clearly never cook in their lives run kitchen supply stores here. Very disappointing.

Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works

Mentioned on

Historical place
Museums
The Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works is a well-preserved historic site that dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers a fascinating look into the region's history during the nitrate boom. The abandoned buildings and towns provide a glimpse of bygone eras, making it an intriguing destination for history enthusiasts.
We had a really great experience ! Guided tour through the village. Amazingly well done exhibition and reconstructions. You could easy understand, touch and imagine how people luved and worked there. I can highly recommend! Take some time to explore as the areal is quite large.
Vivian S — Google review
Ghosttown has a long history of production and has been partially restored. Great place to walk around and to see the different buildings. I'm various buildings. Different theme museums are set up about different aspects of working and living in this ghost town at the time it was operational. Interesting old sulzer engines can be seen, old steam trains in a state of disrepair and old engines manufactured in Britain.
Ewald H — Google review
Words cannot express how absolutely fantastic this place is. As a Californian with an extensive history of visiting ghost towns in the United States, this UNESCO site is by far the best ghost town I have been too. It is remarkably well preserved, it has an unbelievably extensive collection of quotidian objects. Humberstone is the better site of the two if you have extra time as it is much larger and has a lot of variety. Commit to at least 2-3 hours of walking and make sure you go to the far end of the site by where the factories are, you'll find incredible machinery, trains, and artifacts. Note: the old saloon, plaza, church, and movie theater are a must visit. If you are right on time go to Santa L., it's just up the road had a lot of what you can see at Humberstone but is a lot more compact so you can do it all in 45 min. The main museum at this site also has original and beautiful ads produced by the companies and Chilean government to popularize its nitrate abroad, these posters are remarkable pieces of advertising history and early 1900's history.
Helder T — Google review
Amazing open air museum. A lot is still intact and it is very cool to walk back into time while visiting Humberstone. You can easily spend 3/4h. There are some stores in the main square. We paid 6000 pesos, which we found more than reasonable.
Lode R — Google review
Tickets are now 6000 CLP but totally worth it! One of the most amazing and impressive places I've been to over seven months spent in South America. Expect to spend at least three hours visiting this huge site and don't be surprised if you end up spending twice the time!
Massimo N — Google review
The Humberstone and Santa Laura ghost towns are a short drive up the escarpment from Iquique. They are a good way to see how life was when this was a thriving mining community and is somewhat frozen in time. Bring water and shade as it is a hot and dry area of Chile changing quite a bit from the climate in Iquique. Wear solid shoes as the buildings are in disrepair and broken glass and nails are scattered across the ground.
Sling A — Google review
Interesting Museum Saltpeters near Iquique to Central Valley nice and warmer climate than the coastline winter.
Peter S — Google review
I thought it was gonna be a genuine ghost town. Which it is, but the fact that the exterior of every single house is branded with modern signs and plaques, and their interior renovated with most objects cleaned and arranged neatly on the walls, took away from the experience. It's basically like any other museum and thus not worth the trip. The layout of the town and the exterior of buildings is a fascinating sight tho and one to behold.

The Archaeology Museum San Miguel de Azapa is home to the world's oldest mummies, which belong to the Chinchorro culture. Established in 1967 and affiliated with the University of Tarapaca, this museum is situated along a rural road at Km 12 on the A-27 route before reaching San Miguel de Azapa.
A beautifully told story of the local tribe. Items are well displayed. Tours available I. 6 languages. Imagine, mummies 6000 years older then the Egyptian mummies. Who would’ve thought!
Kathleen B — Google review
It is informative. It does have quite a few mummies. We used the audio for English which dragged out too much.
Jeffrey S — Google review
We were there with a cruise ship excursion so it was a quick visit. I wish we had more time to explore the exhibits. The museum has mummies from the historic people who lived along the coast. Their life was harsh, and they had a short life expectancy. This museum also demonstrated how the people from the highlands came and showed these people a better way of life through farming and animal husbandry.
Georgia L — Google review
It is a brilliantly curated museum. Very interesting and informative, and special. Being created by the university make it more informative. It is extremely well done. The drownings are amazing It is easy to follow through. The outdoor space is beautiful for relaxing and seeing birds. And the Chinchorro building has a very nice view of the surrounding area.

AMAZING place to visit, must have of you are in Arica. Big thanks to the guardian man who showed us a video of a hummingbird feeding its babies right in the museum garden. Lots of ancient mummies, amazing territory, great views outside, exhibitions with very good preserved items of ancient tribes, more than you have ever seen in your life. And the ticket is very affordable, just 2000 pesos for adult. Highly recommend.
J K — Google review
Little museum fifteen-twenty minutes away from Arica. Good collection of pre-Colombian art and mummies (some are over 3000 years old!), well organized and informative. You can see the all museum in about an hour. Highly recommended.

Do not miss this incredible museum, where you have the chance to learn about the culture and history of the ancestors of people from this region. Leave time to visit both museums, and consider seeing the mummies after you learn more about the lives they led. Plan on at least 60 to 90 minutes here.

One of the finest beaches in town. Special for sunbathing and chill, it has a restaurant with good drinks and cold beers so you can seat in the sand and enjoy the view. By the time being, is getting crowded of middle class families, so it can get noisy sometimes.
Víctor H — Google review
El Laucho beach is a good place where you can Swim , Sun Bathe and Relax. However, it beggars to say how little if not, no improvement has been made to make it a better place. This is due to the fact that at times the water and shore sand is dirty, most beach goers leave their rubbish lying around and in the most extreme, at the Northern End next to the Kayak Rental , there are 2 tents, which have been there since December 2019, an eyesore for the Tourist, at a place thar prohibits Camping. Its a clear reflection of an unkempt City.

Sights & Landmarks
Morro de Arica is a prominent hill that offers stunning panoramic views of the city and coastline. Standing at 110 meters, it provides a perfect vantage point to witness breathtaking sunsets. The hill also houses the Museum of History and Weapon, making it a dual attraction. At its summit stands an 11-meter tall sculpture called The Christ of Peace, symbolizing peace between Peru and Chile. Visitors can enjoy not only the natural beauty but also learn about the historical significance of the region.
Probably the most known landmark of Arica, this rocky promontory fascinates you, both through consistent history found there (related with Pacific War, Chinchorro culture etc.) and the astonishing view towards the city, the harbour, ocean coast and the south beach of El Laucho. Not to be missed while in this northernmost city of Chile.

Morro de Arica is highly recommended for its panoramic views over the city, the port, and the vast ocean. The scenic overlook provides a unique vantage point that captures Arica’s urban and coastal beauty. The monumental Chilean flag atop the hill is a must-see. Measuring 18 meters wide and 26 meters long, and weighing over 80 kilograms, it’s one of the largest flags I’ve ever seen. While its size feels like a display of overly confidence and national pride, it’s impressive to watch the wind give life to this massive symbol. A great spot for photography and a memorable view.

St. Mark's Cathedral in Arica is a must-visit attraction, designed by the renowned French engineer Gustave Eiffel, who also built the Eiffel Tower. The cathedral was constructed on the site of the old Mother Church of Arica, which was destroyed in an earthquake in 1868. Its interior features stunning cast iron design and unique wooden paneling typical of Chilean Catholic churches. During Christmas season, it becomes a vibrant hub of music and colorful carnival celebrations.

(Translated by Google) We had an excellent time on Boca Río beach. I share the information that you can go with your tent and you will find a good place to relax. The beach with crystal clear water 😍, few and soft waves, but bring your beach shoes because there are pebbles in the sand and they hurt your feet a little 👣. I really recommend them. From Tacna to Boca Río holiday 01/01/2024 it cost us 10 soles per person and there are buses that leave you very close to the beach, the bus loads quickly and there are many places to eat, shop and even take a shower very close to where you take the buses to Tacna. We did the one day tour from Putre to Lauca National Park. We only stopped in Putre to do this tour. The guide was punctual and on time and stopped whenever we wanted to take photos. He also answered our questions and checked we understood given our language barriers. But he didn’t offer up much information at all. However he took us to the CONAF office of the park and there the Ranger gave us a great little tour along the path beside the lake. We thought he might of done this because the guide spoke excellent English but we noticed the guide met all private cars as well. Then we drove along the desert route back to Putre stopping at all the CONAF points along the way and a stop in Parinacota to see the cute little church. It was a stormy rainy day but still spectacular scenery. One of our sons had a cold but he wanted to come but just stay in the car. We then returned to Putre for lunch and the tour finished. We don’t know if the tour finished early because our son was sick or that was the end - but it would have been nice to have been asked. Honestly, we felt like this was only a little more than hiring a car and doing it ourselves, especially as the best info we got was from the CONAF Ranger and the best part of the tour is the beautiful scenery. You can also see most of this scenery when you come from La Paz on the bus, which we did the day before (but of course you can’t stop and enjoy it).

Iglesia San Ildefonso de Putre, also known as the Church of Putre, is a historic church that dates back to 1670 when it was built to replace its predecessor destroyed by an earthquake. What an amazing set of national parks. A must see for anyone who has time to visit. Its cold and dusty but the views are incredible and ever changing. We took the chance to drive ourselves and it was so worth the extra effort.

Amazing volcanic scenery, very few tourists, but cute wildlife. It is very high altitude, but Putre makes a good base to explore from and is a bit lower so a good place to acclimatise.

Amazing Place. The landscapes were unbelievable and there was so much wildlife to see. Highly recommend.

We drove in a 4x4 pickup (Toyota Hilux) from Colchane to Putre through PN Vulcan Isluga and Reserva National Las Vicuñas. The road south of the Salar de Surire is difficult in places and needs a high clearance vehicle to deal with a ford and some deeply rutted roads. We also used 4x4 in places to cope with loose road surface on steep inclines. The road north of Salar de Surire is in good condition as it is used by the mining trucks (of which there were many on the road; we treated them respectfully and they were helpful in indicating when we could pass). NOTE: when we contacted the local police they told us the north section of the road was not passable; we were not convinced they actually knew and had fortunately received information locally that the road was passable (from Hostal Altus: great place to stay, and from Antiplano travel). Conaf Tarapaca were responsive by email and had confirmed the state of the southern roads (passable with high clearance vehicle, 4x4 recommended). Conaf Arica did not reply to our emails. The route through the parks is highly recommended; really amazing scenery and good wildlife (we saw flamingo, fox, vizcacha and other birds, many many vicuñas and llamas).

Nestled conveniently by the southern entrance of the train station, the National Railway Museum is a captivating destination for history enthusiasts and train lovers alike. Open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., this museum invites you to embark on a journey through time with its remarkable collection of vintage locomotives and carriages dating back to the mid-19th century.
Tacna has a lot of history. Visiting the Railway Museum is a must.

Nice physical museum with interesting historic items and explanatory signs. Unfortunately, the museum staff, of which there are too many, are focused on telling visitors what not to do rather than making the museum accessible. Despite not paying for a guide, I was assigned a chaperone who followed me throughout. My chaperone did not allow me to walk down wide concrete paths to see the turntable, nor the one toward the restoration area, nor see the entire open-air machine shop. They eventually got tired of being my chaperone, and while viewing the main locomotive in the museum I was approached by security and told I had to leave in 3 minutes, by 2:43 PM, even though the museum's sign indicated they closed at 4:30 PM. The security guard made a show of shutting the gates behind me. I walked around the block and passed by the re-opened gate. The numerous staff seem most comfortable sitting in an empty museum.

It's an expensive market. It's for tourists. Still affordable. Food is tasty, and it's a market so don't look for a fancy place to eat, it's a local market.
Clau M — Google review
Its a place where we can experience local food at a fraction of the price compared to tourist restaurants. Very competitive on that matter because there's many Chileans also working there. You can compare it to a huge grocery store and bargain store all in one. Fruits and vegetables are very cheap and they bring them in large quantities, what's favorable to tourists looking for local fruits or veggies because they sell it buy the kilo. I myself got 5 mangoes for a dollar (3.80 soles) and broccoli for 50 cents (about a pound) - that's just a small example. Its not really a touristic place, its a local community commercial center. Still, great to find amazing bargains!

Decent food but way too pricey considering the surroundings inside the market aren't very nice or appealing. Would have rather gone somewhere nicer for the same price
Omar C — Google review
A traditional place, recently refurbished, with many different things, starting for small convenience stores, with local products, milk, chocolates and any sort of thing for cooking or cleaning. LOL. In the second floor you cand find a nice display of natural juice makers, who tempt you with fresh fruit slices for free like mangoes and melons. It is very cheap and juices are awesome because of the quality of the organic local fruits, tasty and aromatic. And for less than a dollar you can drink the WHOLE BLENDER. Yes, the whole blender. There's a hidden sublevel where you can buy alcohol and cigarrettes from all around the world for very good prices (JW black for $40 bottle) and also there's nice cheap place to get a manicure or pedicure with nail design for less than $3 dollars. In the surroundings you can find pirate buses to Arica, most of them, chilean. Good option to avoid crowded buses at the international station.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Aramu Muru, also known as the Gate of the Gods, is a stone-cut alcove located in the Hayu Marca mountain range near Lake Titicaca in Peru. This dramatic canyon setting is about 115 km from Juliaca City and approximately 78 km from Desaguadero on the border with Bolivia. Discovered accidentally in 1996, this Incan construction project's purpose remains unknown.
Atmospheric site where you can feel the energy of the past. Fascinating that so little is known of its history. If you visit make sure you climb to the top of the hill to see the beautiful rock formations and views of Lake Titicaca. Locals are happy for you to camp in the area too, when you can enjoy the night sky and perhaps find out why this place was a Stargate?!

Most incredible portal and energy vortex!! A MYST see site. A place of magic that is still mysterious and off the beaten trick. We felt especially privileged to have been taken here.

Even if you are not into mysticism, the terrain alone is enough to marvel at. The red earth and rock outcrops shapes are otherworldly in stature. It’s not something you see every day. I could not operate the drone within close proximity to the “portal”. I’m guess it’s the magnetic interference. I had to walk probably a hundred meters before the drone would respond. Amazing place.

One of the most spiritual places I've ever visited! Socrates, the aymara guy who charges you at the entrance showed us the back part of the mountain where the ancient drawings are and convinced me to camp there someday (I can't wait!). Socrates and some other ladies who were selling gifts there explained how the aymara language works! I loved every part of this experience, one of the greatest I lived in Peru
Erin K — Google review
Aramu Muru is a stone carving in Hayu Marca (a majestic and rugged mountain range along the shores of Lake Titicaca - Peru), some 115 km from Juliaca City and about 78 km from border city Desaguadero (with Bolivia). Known as “Gate of the Gods”, it was accidently discovered in 1996 and is believed by locals to be an abandoned Incan construction project (although what purpose the space once served is still unknown). Aramu Muru is cut in the side of one such granite crest. The flat stone is approximately 7.0 m square, with a T-shaped alcove is 198 cm high carved in the bottom middle (one man can fit into it). The surface of the portal is well-polished. Many local legends tell that - Aramu Muru is seen as a gate leads to the spirit world or even - to the world of gods. Anyway, it is not known when Aramu Muru was made and who did it as no archaeological research has been done here yet. Nowadays, locals carry out rituals of all kinds at the door of Aramu Muru, to ask for peace, to say thank you to the Gods or ask for hope. On the other side of the cliff in earlier times was located a tunnel, which is blocked now with stones to prevent mishaps with tourists. July and August are the best months when most tourists visit Aramu Muru to explore, make some hiking, rituals... Whatever the reason is that you visit Aramu Muru, you will certainly be fascinated, for the natural beauty that surrounds Lake Titicaca, the varied geography, the legends or the spiritual energy that undoubtedly recharges you in this beautiful area of Peru.
