Sights & Landmarks
Fountains
Fountain of St. Joseph, also known as Chafariz de Sao Jose, is a historic site built in 1749 that served as a crucial stop for travelers to replenish their canteens and water their animals. Despite its slightly worn appearance, the fountain exudes an air of tranquility with its surrounding greenery, making it an ideal spot for picnics or seeking respite from the heat.
Excellent site for a peaceful stroll. The fountain is relatively well preserved, resembling the facade of baroque churches. It was built in the 18th century, and was used to supply water to the residents of Tiradentes. Apparently, the three water spouts had different purposes (human consumption, another one for animals and the third one for washing clothes). At the back you can still see the aqueduct that supplies the water which comes from the Bosque da Mãe D'Agua (access seems closed now).
Jorge R — Google review
Very cool historic fountain. It was very unusual because it is in someone's front yard. The home located behind the fountain is privately owned. it was a little disappointing to see only two of the three heads of the fountain working at the time we visited. Hopefully the caretaker has plans to restore this historic Monument.

Simple but beautiful spot. You can follow the path of the water from the bush to the fountain.... worth the walk.

It's an old historic water fountain. Do not drink the water from the back of the fountain, it's not clear for drinking.

Museum of St. Anne (Old Jailhouse)

Mentioned on
3 lists
Museum
Cultural center
The Museum of St. Anne, located in Minas Gerais, was originally a jailhouse and has now been transformed into a small yet captivating museum. It showcases around 300 carvings of Saint Anne, the patron saint of miners, reflecting the region's history of gold mining. The museum is well-maintained and organized, with interactive screens providing detailed explanations about each artwork.
You can check some beautiful Aleijadinho pieces of art!!

If you're interested in the history of Santa Anna and her role in colonial Brazil it's interesting. Small. If you are interested in the history of the jailhouse it's disappointing.

(Translated by Google) The structure is in excellent condition, but has had to be restored and modified over time. When I went, admission was R$20, while students and teachers were free, with tickets purchased at the door. The museum is small and features several sacred statues of Saint Anne, mother of Mary. Catholics might find it more interesting.

It shows colonization advancing across Brazil and devastating the local culture while catechizing and colonizing an entire local population. Igreja de Santo Antonio

Mentioned on
+17 other lists
Catholic church
Igreja de Santo Antonio, also known as Igreja Matriz de Santo Antonio, is a stunning church in Tiradentes. Named after the town's patron saint, it was designed by Aleijadinho and boasts a magnificent interior adorned with gold and Old Testament symbolism. The church features a remarkable polychrome organ from Portugal and seven golden phoenixes hanging from braided chains. Outside, there is a famous sundial dating back to 1785.
Gorgeous church, covered with gilded gold. Every detail is a joy to examine. Make sure to note the imported Portuguese organ.
Josiah W — Google review
Standing before a centuries-old church is always an impressive experience, evoking thoughts of the countless people who have been there before us. The building itself, with its towering structure and rich history, carries with it both light and shadow. While it has been a symbol of suppression at various points in history, it has also been a place of belonging and hope for those seeking solace and a better afterlife. This blend of dark history and spiritual refuge speaks to the deep and complex role the church has played in people's lives over the centuries.
Ulf D — Google review
Very beautiful, old colonial church. The R$10 seems steep for what it is though and the amount of tourists moving through. Occasionally closed for weddings etc. but this isn't well advertised.

Cachoeira da Fumaça de Baixo

Outdoor Activities
Other Outdoor Activities
Cachoeira da Fumaça de Baixo is a breathtaking natural attraction renowned for its splendid landscape. Located in an exquisite region, this scenic spot captivates visitors with its awe-inspiring beauty and majestic surroundings. The waterfall cascades down from great heights, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of water plunging into the depths below.
(Translated by Google) Just like the smoke trail, this one is also unsuitable for swimming. The trail to it is short, but a little more complicated, since it is somewhat hidden and surrounded by tall vegetation. However, it is worth going to see it.
Igor H — Google review
(Translated by Google) It is part of the Complexo da Fuminha and is very close (a few meters) to the main waterfall that gives the complex its name. Although it is very close, access is not easy because there is no well-marked trail and there are some obstacles. The place is very beautiful with low falls, but of good volume. It is a shame that you cannot swim because the falls form a pool in which there is even a small beach and enjoying this pool would be a great pleasure. Another beautiful place in Carrancas!!!!

One of the best waterfalls in Carrancas, also one of the most famous, what makes the place be always busy, you have to be very lucky to get it empty. It is a natural park in Minas Gerais state. The park is wonderful, full of sedimentary rocks and natural vegetation, some streams and caves. You can trail everywhere there and have fun in contact with nature. I also recommend going to "janela do céu" (window of the sky), which is a very long walking trail. It is tiring, but worth the visit. About the park itself, I do recommend it.

Make no mistake my friends, this is one of the greatest places to visit at least once in your lifetimes. It's not simple or easy to get to, and some of the trails are definitely not for beginners, but it's worth every little drop of sweat to climb up to the window of the sky (janela do céu) and enjoy the unique experience this place has to offer. Caxambu Waters Park

Park
Nature & Parks
A great place to feel closer to Mother Nature. The paths surrounded by tall trees, the mineral water fountains built with an old classic look, the sound of birds, the wind in the trees, and many, many cicadas. I'm born in Caxambu, and live here for almost all my life, and the Water park is like a sanctuary for me, where I feel safe and sound. Last week was my first time swimming in the pool and it couldn't be more fun and pleasing! There's so many good things I could talk about the Park, but just being in a place like this is an experience I can not find words to describe. You'll must feel it yourself.
Paulo A — Google review
This really is an amazing place to visit. I really liked the different water points/fountains that all had an unique flavour and most of them taste good. The buildings of the water fountains are well maintained and in general are beautiful. The park also is nice to walk through and is easy to take children or babies to the park. There are many nice places to sit. Also the prize is good. There is also a swimming pool and a place to take baths. Downside is that parking is difficult close to the park. Overall, this is the best water park that we went to.

(Translated by Google) The place is very beautiful, full of nature and several waterfalls. The house is super comfortable and welcoming, the staff and the owner are careful and attentive, paying attention to every detail to ensure a welcoming experience. I smoked at a 3-day retreat event, and it was great to disconnect a little and slow down. The candles instead of electric light help with the more peaceful atmosphere (but there is power to charge cell phones and electrical devices) (Original) O lugar é muito bonito, cheio de natureza e várias cachoeiras.

Túnel Maria Nossar (Túnel que Chora) is a significant historical site in the Vale do Café, inaugurated in the presence of the imperial family for the purpose of creating a railway to transport coffee. This tunnel, like many other structures in the area, was built by slaves using rough stone and measures 95m long, 5m wide, and 3.5m high. Its peculiar name "Tunnel that Cries" raises curiosity about its origins.
Great Tunnel built by Brazilian slaves end to end.

(Translated by Google) The path to the waterfall is relatively easy, and can be done in a 4x2 vehicle, with only a few stretches of dirt roads. The place has paid parking (R$20.00) and some restaurants and shops where you can buy sweets, wines, liquors, etc. A peaceful atmosphere with no loud music and on the day of the visit it was not crowded. Crystal clear, cold waters with the possibility of observing some birds on the banks of the waterfall. I recommend it and would go back! Parque Nacional do Itatiaia

Mentioned on

National park
Nature & Parks
Park
Itatiaia National Park, Brazil's first national park, boasts a diverse range of landscapes from dense rainforests to rugged peaks. The lower section offers accessible trails leading to waterfalls and natural swimming holes, while the remote high country provides excitement for serious hikers and climbers. Visitors can enjoy abundant flora and fauna including orchids, monkeys, and tropical birds. Accessing the upper portion may require a high-clearance vehicle due to challenging roads.
Wonderful national park at Itataia. It's possible to visit the park on foot, bike or by car. Visitors entering the park by car must pay an extra fee (around R$ 24,00) to take it's paved and non paved roads on a motored vehicle. The activities available at the park for visitors range from a beautiful cultural centre with many historical highlights, track trails in a rich forest terrain, magnificent waterfalls to admire and freshen up, numerous bird watching spots, and exuberant viewpoints of the Mantiqueira Mountain and it's wildlife. The difficulty of tracks may vary a lot. Upon entry on the park, visitors are given a detailed map, which shows what's possible to do whilst visiting the site. The park is basically divided into a lower and an upper part. The most demanding tracks, which are also those that one needs to plan in advance, are located in the upper part of park. In those areas, it's possible to camp on designated areas or stay for the night at one of the park's lodging houses (reservation in advance needed). In the park's website, there are lots of information for visitors, and high definition pdf maps for downloading, as well as a list of well trained guides on the park whenever the need arises. It's not possible to park in any spot by the road, the permitted parking areas will be sign posted. All around the park, it's possible to see restaurants, hotels and other private properties, which means there's no time available to do everything you'll find at the park. It's a highly recommended visit, and a place not to forget.

(Translated by Google) Amazing. One of the best visits to historic farms I've ever done. Excellent for the farm's original collection, the restoration carried out, and the organization and planning for the visit. The guide is very well prepared. The owners live on site, so there are spaces that cannot be visited, but this does not compromise their historical legacy. The owner is very kind, knowledgeable, and encourages historical preservation. There are projects underway to build a museum and cafeteria. A must-see visit. Price: 25 reais/person (November 2023). Imperdível a visita. Preço: 25 reais/pessoa (novembro 2023).
