Kuelap Fortress

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
The ruins of Kuelap, a fortress built between the 9th and 11th centuries by the Chachapoya culture, are located on a mountain peak and surrounded by an impressive wall up to 20m high. The structure is oval-shaped, with three narrow gates that act as a clever security system to force attackers into single-file lines. This historical landmark was rediscovered in 1843 and made up of millions of cubic feet of remarkably preserved stone.
All I can say is wow. This site is amazing, the walk through the historical buildings is beautiful and the view is breathtaking. It isn't a huge sight and there is a 1.4km hike up hill to the actual site once you get off the cable cars but it's worth it (you could rent a horse if you wanted to). It's quite uneven so if mobility is an issue you might need to take care.
Lisa W — Google review
Important note to everyone planning to visit Kuelap: it is only possible to buy the entry ticket to the archeological site online (with national or international credit card). Currently, as of August 2025, the regular ticket price is 30 Soles. The ticket to the teleferico can still be purchased on the spot (cash or national credit card only). The price was 25,50 Soles.

I was a bijr skeptical about heading there, but if you are already doing gocta, then why not. Archeological site is ome thing, I was more impressed by the views on this place. So good that I kept looking at them. Plus the cable car heading up is also amazing. Important thing to notice that they don't sell the tickets for the fortress itself anywhere. You have to buy it online I'm going to add the QR code to do so which also has the website. If you go to the cable car entrance, they will also tell you to book it online. And the idea to book that is that choose an entrance which will be at least 1 hour or 1.5 hours later to when you are at the cable car insurance because it will take 20 minutes to get up then almost 30 minutes of walking to that place and then you will have you will get the limit end entry so choose your entry time one or 1.5 hours later.
Darpan J — Google review
Kuélap is absolutely amazing! The place is full of energy and history, surrounded by stunning vegetation and mountain views. The whole tour inside takes about 2 hours, with lots of ruins and impressive walls to explore. Entrance is S/ 20 (online only). To get there you have three options: • Hiking (very hard), • By car (Nogalcucho or Choctamal), • Or the cable car, which we chose and highly recommend! It costs around S/ 27 per person, takes about 25 minutes, and offers breathtaking views. Important note: Kuélap is not only a fortress, but a whole fortified city built by the Chachapoyas culture around 900–1100 AD. The cable car itself was built with French technology and is super modern and safe. Definitely one of the most impressive experiences in northern Peru!
Adrian H — Google review
A magnificent site, with all the round houses in the typical Chachapoyas style. However, do note that there was a landslide early in 2023 and some parts are still under repair (and the walk is a little muddy, since it is not intended to be the main one.). Fantastic scenery though.
Chin H — Google review
Kuelap fortress - again, out of the way and so incredibly old and historical. Our guide Kristian really knew his stuff - we saw to most amazing pre-Incan structures. The gondola we had to ride to visit the fortress gave us panoramic views that were to die for! Good loop walk. Please note that you do need your passport with your ticket.
Tracey H — Google review
It was so amazing 👏 built 1000 years, BC!!! Unbelievable, so beautiful up here, orchids and bromeliad grow upon trees and a wealth of birds 🐦 including hummingbirds, grace the citadel. The 4km cable car 🚡 was just awesome. It's all so interesting. If you can't make the final climb, you can hire a horse. Take a guide for a full experience ✨️

Plaza de Armas of Chachapoyas

Mentioned on
9 lists
City park
Sights & Landmarks
Plaza de Armas of Chachapoyas is a beautiful and bustling square located in the heart of the Peruvian mountains. The area offers a tranquil and clean atmosphere, with friendly locals and a variety of restaurants to enjoy. Visitors can explore the nearby market for regional produce and fruits before embarking on treks and tours. The plaza itself boasts stunning architecture and is currently undergoing renovation works.
Long drive to get there, but worth it. The town has narrow roads, so driving a car needs care, but roads are mostly one way in the centre. Road condition is poor, getting to the town in places, and terrible driving to Kuelap, which is disappointing, as everything else is modernised. The good thing is there are no moto taxis

Nestled on the Cerro Luya Urco, just a kilometer from the vibrant Plaza de Armas in Chachapoyas, lies the enchanting Pozo de Yanayacu. This captivating site is steeped in legend, believed to have been created when Toribio de Mogrovejo touched a rock with his walking stick, causing a spring to emerge and quench the region's thirst during a dry spell.

(Translated by Google) The walk to the place is very beautiful. Unfortunately it is very neglected. The indications and the historical overview of the place are destroyed, the road dirty with wrappers and plastic bottles. At the top of the well there is a platform with the letters of the city's name and it is dirty. It could be used for a picnic after the walk or to stay to enjoy the atmosphere but people have left a lot of plastic in the grass. (Original) La caminata hacia el lugar es muy bonito. Sooo nice, very impressing landscape, takes 3 - 4 hours to walk to all 3 viewing points, just follow the path, easy to find, start with huanca urco because it' easier to go back to town from Mirador Sonche/Huanca !

Extraordinary view of the Sonche canyon and river. The mountains and gorges are truly impressive and imposing. Definitely a must-stop if you’re in Chachapoyas! The place is very well maintained. Entrance is S/ 6 (for nationals). Definitely a must-stop if you’re in Chachapoyas!

It seems like Colca cañon in Arequipa. It's near the town, just 20 mins and has and incredible view. You don't need a lot of time, and don't need a tour - it's possible to make a trip with the local transport.

Gocta Andes Lodge

Hotel
Nature & Parks
Nestled in a remote location, Gocta Andes Lodge offers simple yet elegant rooms and suites with stunning views of the Gocta Waterfall. The lodge boasts a contemporary and minimalist atmosphere, providing guests with a comfortable stay surrounded by nature. Guests can enjoy amenities such as an outdoor pool, a restaurant serving delicious buffet breakfasts, and comfortable bedding with private bathrooms. The lodge's proximity to Cocachimba town allows easy access to shops, restaurants, and tourist information for exploring the area.
Our four-day stay at Gocta Eco Lodge was an absolute dream. Perched in the stunning landscapes of Chachapoyas, this lodge perfectly combines luxury, nature, and exceptional service. We stayed in a suite, which was beautifully designed with high ceilings, a spacious and well-equipped bathroom, and an extremely comfortable bed that ensured restful nights. The attention to detail was impeccable, and the A1 service made us feel truly taken care of. One of the standout features of the lodge is its two stunning infinity pools, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Gocta Falls and the lush green surroundings. Taking a dip while admiring the landscape was an unforgettable experience. The tours were excellently organised, with knowledgeable and friendly guides who made each excursion engaging and insightful. Exploring Gocta Falls with such a well-planned itinerary added to the magic of the experience. If there is one small opportunity for improvement, it would be the addition of a bathtub in the bathroom, which would elevate the already luxurious experience even further. Overall, Gocta Eco Lodge is a must-visit destination for those seeking peace, adventure, and top-tier hospitality in one of Peru’s most breathtaking locations. Highly recommended!

Rooms- Clean, very nice, spacious, well decorated. The view of the waterfall from the room is simply breathtaking.. there is a fan in the room, however no A/C. Isn’t really much of an issue though, due to relativity comfortable temperatures. Yoga mats were included in the room on the outside deck, which is really perfect spot for some yoga. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner - superb selection and service, we enjoyed every single dish that we tried. Experience- overall, phenomenal. The only “negatives” I can mention 1) there were construction crews and improvements going on during our stay. The noises were pretty loud during the day while enjoying the pool. I understand why these are necessary, just would have been nice to be notified prior to our stay. 2) the road conditions were very rough. It is understandable that road improvements are taking place to improve infrastructure; however there was no warning of road closures (some cause 30-45 min delays) and also conditions that were present while inquiring about booking. Tours from here were great. John was one of the tour guides who really stood out, he did a great job on our trip to Kuelap. The guide to the waterfall was also great. The service at the hotel is truly amazing and very welcoming. The pool was very cold during the day, but was quite refreshing to us. Recommendations to the hotel to improve - 1) maybe add a fan in the rooms, the white noise can help reduce the noise when people are walking around by your room, as the walls are somewhat thin. 2) the hotel can consider adding a spa/massage service. I am certain many would take advantage of that. Cheers!

To start with we asked for an airport shuttle but got no response, but OK it happens. Then we arrived very tired and sick at 11:30 a.m. we asked for our room as soon as possible, we were able to go lie down at 2:30 p.m.... but OK. While waiting for our room we noticed that the promotional photos no longer corresponded to reality: a filthy building blocking a view that was supposed to be heavenly... But I imagine they are not responsible for their neighbors, OK... We were very tired and sick so we tried to rest! But huge construction work is underway making a lot of noise in the afternoon, but in the morning from 7am it is the guides and the staff who talk loudly in front of rooms 1 to 8... sorry but it's starting to be a lot! The rooms 11 to 18 are facing the filthy wall limiting their view to a square of lawn. Already the rooms are spacious and clean, but the bed was very hard, not firm just hard! Finally, the restaurant food is not bad, but honestly, it is not extraordinary (Alfredo pastas are just tasteless) The service is very, very slow, even if it's not necessarily a problem on vacation, but it adds to the rest... (We have to take the car at 2 p.m., we order our meal at the restaurant at 1:15 p.m., (2 starters) we are served 40 minutes later...) So sorry, even though the staff is very nice, the services are clearly not up to par with the room prices... We encountered an overwhelmed team with a clear lack of training, only stammering a few words of English; luckily my partner speaks Spanish well... When you see the extraordinary services you can find in Peru for such a price, I think you'll have to make a big effort.
Victor V — Google review
They were very helpful providing transportation from Tarapoto and to all of our trips. The view from our room was breathtaking and the food was also quite good. One of the tour guides sold us expired coffee beans and that is why the -1 star. He told us to not buy from the store and that he had some straight from the owners of the company. It sounded better for the business but yet it seemed he had been carrying around this bag for over a year as it also showed wear to the package...
Jonathan N — Google review
The hotel is well located in the locality of Cocachimba. Just at 5 min of the point where the trail to Gocta waterfall starts. It also has a privileged view of the waterfall from the hotel. But not all rooms may have this view so you will need to ask when you book. People are kind but lack some sympathy when they are attending to you. The rooms were really cozy and always kept clean.
Rocío B — Google review
A fantastic 4 night stay at Gocta lodge in late April with our family of 4. The lodge was quiet unfortunately, as tourism still effected (unnecessarily IMO), however the staff and service was excellent. Great food and nice drinks, with the views and pool obviously a highlight. We did the walk to the falls as well as some other walks in the area. Excellent guides available through the lodge. Highly recommended for families as well as travellers who love the outdoors.

The Caverns of Quiocta

Nature & Parks
Caverns & Caves
The Caverns of Quiocta, located in the department of Amazonas in the Peruvian high jungle region, offer a unique and adventurous experience for tourists. This former burial site features stunning limestone rock formations and guided tours by flashlight. The journey to the caves is bumpy but offers picturesque views of rural areas. Once inside, visitors are enveloped in darkness, with only their flashlights illuminating the way.
Beautiful caverns, bring a large flashlight, be silent! Follow the guides instructions! Also I recommend bringing waterproof, hiking boots, maybe waterproof pants. Lots of sticky clay so you have to be careful. Worth the visit, beautiful countryside.
Enzo S — Google review
Spectacular cave, without a doubt one of the most impressive we’ve seen in Peru. It’s very spacious, with 4 ‘rooms’ where you can admire the different rock formations… truly amazing nature! The route is 550 meters long and takes about one hour at a slow pace. Entrance costs S/ 25 for adults, and you must be accompanied by a guide (S/ 30) and rent a helmet (S/ 3 per person). It may seem a bit expensive, but it’s absolutely worth it. The guides explain everything very well and are super friendly. The cave is also incredibly well set up, with a nicely built path and lights. It was just inaugurated in 2024! Definitely a stop in Chachapoyas!!
Adrian H — Google review
This was an really different place to visit and boy are they serious about safety (check out our head gear). After driving through stunning farm land (and a very scary dirt road) we arrived to these beautiful and very large caves. A short walk through farmland to actually enter the caves and enjoy the amazing formations.
Tracey H — Google review
Booked a tour to see the caves. The drive up to the caves is very bumpy but has some nice views of rural areas. Walk a little bit downhill and wonder how somebody ever found the entrance because it is craddled in the mountainside. The inside is pitch black. Very cool to only be able to see where your, or others, flashlights are pointing. Cave floor is filled with water and clay. If you plan to go by yourself make sure to bring water resistant boots or wellingtons.
Wouter T — Google review
I enjoyed the cave, but it is not unlike many others. The walk through the mud is the exciting parts. The stalactites and stalagmites are okay but not extensive or impressive compared to other caves I have visited. It is 600 meters deep and the mud can be tricky.
Travelhaunt — Google review
One of the most incredible places in the World. If you come tu Chachapoyas, Its a must to visit it.
Abraham S — Google review
Cool but it's like most other caves so if you've already been to one you might want to paas. However, it has an interesting trek through mud and water so you NEED BOOTS. I saw a guy lose his shoes in the mud.

Sarcofagos de Karajia

Archaeological site
Sights & Landmarks
Ancient Ruins
Visitors can hike or ride a horse to this set of 15th-century sarcophagi standing in a cliffside.
This site is really amazing. We had a guide/driver take us because it is really out in the middle of nowhere (in a good way, since it's not busy). You arrive, pay the small fee, and then can hike to the viewpoints. When we visited in mid-May, there didn't seem to be any horses available. Realize that it's downhill on the way there, and uphill on the way back. It's not a terribly long distance but it was in the sun and we hadn't yet acclimated to the elevation, so we were a bit worn out after our visit. The people in the town were very friendly and offered us some fermented chicha. We purchased a few items, which were honestly far less expensive than other places, so I would recommend buying here if you're interested in something.
Jon G — Google review
I think it is worth it if you also see Kuelap and the mummy museum in Leybamba, don't go to chachapoyas only for this, try see all those so spend at least a few days. I did it without a guide and zero Spanish. It worked out cheaper and more fun that way, there are buses and collectivos that can get you there and back
Simon T — Google review
Amazing archaeological site! The sarcophagi of Karajía are truly impressive, standing high on the cliffs with incredible views of the valley. The place has a unique energy and is very well worth the visit if you’re in the Chachapoyas area. The walk to reach them is short but a bit steep and it takes around 1 hour total (20min down and 40min up). Entrance is S/ 20 for adults. A very special and unforgettable experience!
Adrian H — Google review
This was amazing. After walking through farmland (visited an organic potato farm - even digging up the incredibly purple coloured potatoes) for around 4 km, we saw five 2.5 metre tall human shaped tombs (one even had the skull of an enemy above it - check out the last photo). These amazing structures house the mummified remains of Chachapoyas leaders. They are over 1000 years old but were only discovered around the year 2000. You have to see them - they are incredible.
Tracey H — Google review
We were very glad we took the time to visit here. It was an easy 30 min walk down hill to the site (though a steep walk back). The sarcophagi are very impressive, and the history to follow was very interesting. We took binoculars, which we highly recommend to see in detail.
Pippa G — Google review
I really liked the site. If you are planning to drive there be prepared to stop and ask like 20 times for directions. The route is not adequately marked with signs, occasionally you will see a sign, but in the interim, ask. The people are are very friendly. Guides and horses are available for the trek down to the site. After walking 10-12K in Gocta Falls, this is a walk in the park, 4-5K roundtrip.
Victor G — Google review
Long way to get there, and not all routes are open. Normally you can observe sarcophagus from the distance, BUT if you have a drone….😎it’s possible to get shots like that 😉 Horses available, which is a big plus!!
Alexandr T — Google review
From the village of Cruzpata it's a good 30 min walk down into the valley to the site. Locals rent guided horses (S/ 15 regardless of one-way or round-trip). Local guides available in Cruzpata (S/ 30). Infrastructure is very crude.

(Translated by Google) It was a great experience!! The San Sebastián church is one of the most commemorative infrastructures in the city of Piura, it has an architecture worthy of admiration, it is located three corners from the main square, it is a jewel in itself, inside it we can find paintings, sculptures and ornaments that leave any observer's perception flying. Likewise, the small park next to it is perfect for walking with the family or someone important, since it is a place with many green areas and equally quiet and sure, we can find restaurants on the sides, next to one of the best picarones stands in Piura, but above all the church is a place worth attending for any believer, and an attractive place for any admirer of architectural beauty. Plaza de Armas Piura

City park
Sights & Landmarks
Plaza de Armas de Piura is considered one of Peru's oldest and most charming main squares. The city green space is adorned with old tamarind trees, flowers, and park benches, as well as the marble statue "Pola." Every Sunday, a flag lifting ceremony takes place here. While it offers a pleasant spot to relax under the shade, some feel that more attention should be given to its upkeep considering its historical significance.
Piura is a very interesting tropical city, with most hospitable people. An excellent 5* hotel on one side of the Plaza, and a number of traditional restaurants on the other. Not on the conventional tourist trail but much loved by Peruvians. Where the republic of Peru was founded in 1830 by General Grau, whose home is now a museum.

The plaza is an area to see the locals relax and go about their day. It is surrounded by shops and eateries. The cathedral is beautiful with its glorious architecture. This is a passing attraction in Piura. It is beautiful at night with the lights illuminating the area. It is good for some photo opportunities and to see locals just sitting around and conversing.

Cute little place to walk around surrounded by shops, pharmacies and banks so you can get anything you forgot before moving forward with your trip, especially if you're visiting the beach town in Màncora. There's a little museum too that you can visit.
Denisse H — Google review
A good space to spend some time under the shade. However, it should definitely be improved considering the history of the city and the number of years of its creation. The streets around it are being paved and there is a lot of dust and dirt everywhere. Needs a bit more of care.

This university is one of the nicest in the world that I have seen in terms of scenery and architecture. The university grounds are like a nature park with wildlife and plenty of areas to walk. You will discover of all manner of birds and even deer on your walk. There are some interesting shapes and patterns in some of the buildings. The staff are very friendly and knowledgable. The chapel is peaceful and well-designed. There is a great sense of peace and harmony when walking around that must make it a perfect place to study. Even if you do not work or study there it is worth a visit.

The best university in the north of Lima. The ELT program is one of the best in Peru👍
Joan P — Google review
The university is great. But the classrooms? Let’s just say the air conditioning seems to be set for polar bears, not people. My girlfriend ends up needing a winter jacket just to attend lectures, and she's caught a cold more than once because of it. Unless you're part penguin, you might want to bring a sweater… or two. A little less Arctic and a bit more human-friendly temperature would really make a difference! 🙏

(Translated by Google) Exceptional beach, not a shadow of waste, normal employees clean it every morning. Very very few people. The water is blue and clear, and above all warm! You enter it like your bathtub. The ocean creates mini rivers 15 cm high on the beach at high tide, ideal for children. Not far away there is "los organos", a small picturesque village, but no need to go there, because you can have groceries, water, whatever you want delivered by motorbike taxi. On the other hand, for gringos like me, be careful of the heat and UV rays, it's extreme! If you want to rent on site air conditioning is obligatory! And particularly hungry mosquitoes 24 hours a day 🙃!
