Large cave in rural Minas Gerais, Portuguese only tours. Should be about 30 minutes to the end of the cave and back. Not wheelchair accessible, difficult and irregular stone steps inside. Cave is decoratively illuminated, floods partially in summer. Good parking, bathrooms, and small restaurant.

It’s a big cave with many caverns (for Brazil). It has good infrastructure, friendly guides, and the road from Belo Horizonte is safe and fast.

Stunning caves, in a remote location. Very unspoilt and a great tour guide ensured we learned a lot about the history. Small souvenir shops surround the caves and nice gardens also. Plenty of parking and not too expensive. It wasn't busy when we went, at midday in May
James O — Google review
This cave is beautiful. It is large and has many different interesting rooms inside. My husband and I traveled to this cave without our 9 month old daughter, as we thought it might be too risky. It was a very smart choice. The cave has many stairs, uneven ground and there are no railings. It is safe but you have to be really careful with children. We would've had our daughter in a baby carrier, but it would have still been very inconvenient. Also, on our tour there was an elderly woman who attended. Even though a guide personal was provided to her to help ensure her safety, I watched her struggle the entire time. My own opinion if you are an elderly individual who has limited mobility, my recommendation is that this activity is not for you. As I previously mentioned, the ground in uneven, stairs going up and down (some very steep). Overall, we enjoyed this cave very much. Keep in mind that you have to pay to enter the cave and they only accept cash.

Very nice speleothemes and galeries, not huge as expected, still poor in scientific information, but at least count with a good infrastructure.

It's not a big cave, but it has good structure + a nice green garden to make picnics .

Beautiful caves with very good accent lighting and sturdy walkways and stairs throughout. I could literally spend all day inside the cave. If you don't speak Portuguese, call ahead and try arranging for an English tour guide. I didn't but still enjoyed the tour even though I couldn't understand a word the guide was saying. Contrary to what Google maps says, there is not a natural history museum here. There is one skeleton of a prehistoric animal inside the one cave, but that's all.

Partage Shopping Betim is a vibrant indoor shopping destination that boasts an impressive selection of 240 stores spread across four levels. This mall offers more than just retail therapy; visitors can enjoy a cinema, a trampoline park, and a diverse array of restaurants. While it may be slightly easier to access compared to Monte Carmo, parking fees can be on the higher side. Nonetheless, shoppers will find it to be an enjoyable experience with ample dining options and safe spaces for children to play.

Inhotim Museum

Mentioned on
1 list
Art museum
Museums
Inhotim Museum is a remarkable outdoor museum featuring an extensive collection of contemporary artworks set amidst lush tropical landscapes. Located just 50km west of Belo Horizonte, it boasts 23 modern art galleries showcasing monumental international artwork. The sprawling gardens house over 4000 plant species and picturesque lakes with swans, creating a serene atmosphere for visitors to explore. With diverse art installations including paintings, sculptures, and performances, the museum offers something for every artistic taste.
World class attraction 1 hour by car from Belo Horizonte. Highly recommended and, in my opinion, hands down the best touristic attraction in the region. It's a huge botanical park dotted with very interesting (sometimes very unusual and peculiar) art galleries and installations from renowned Brazilian and international artists. Even if you're not a fan or a contemporary art connoisseur, just the nature itself will blow you away. Make sure to buy the tickets in advance (a day or two before the visit might be enough) and if possible try to visit on a weekday (Wednesdays are free which is good, but might mean longer lines). The last time I was there, it was a Sunday in between holidays, so the lines to get in and for some of the galleries were huge but moved quickly. It's possible to go and come back by Uber, but expect price surges because everybody goes and leaves at the same time. There are cheaper bus options as well, but keep in mind that if you're in a group, it might be worth renting a car or just sharing an Uber. The road to access it is not the best, but it's manageable. If money is not a problem, it's possible to stay at a great 5 star hotel inside the park. Don't expect to see everything in just one day, but if you only have one, make sure to arrive at the earliest time possible and pay for the golf cart package to speed things up (the extra fee is not that expensive). If you decide to walk everywhere, expect long distances and huge elevation differences, so dress accordingly. I've always been there during the fall or winter, so although very humid and hot (the area is part of the Atlantic rainforest), the weather was comfortable enough and there were no mosquitos. About the galleries, two different takes: study or watch videos before going to make sure you visit the ones that interest you the most in order not to waste time walking aimlessly and not miss out on the great ones; or take your time and be surprised, you do you. Some are interactive, you'll have to take your shoes off and for some others, have enclosed proper shoes to step on broken glass. There are two art installations with swimming pools and if you want, you're able to get in and swim (I guess they even offer towels and a changing area). Some other galleries might not be suitable for children due to adult themes and be careful with others with flashing lights, but everything is clearly signed and explained by the staff. The service is great, but some of the staff might not be so knowledgeable about the art and might not even be able to speak other languages. And although all the signs are in English as well, instructions given by the staff were all in Portuguese only, so beware. Hiring a guide beforehand to help and explain some of the art is great if possible, but not required at all. There are great options for food throughout the park that cater to all tastes and most food restrictions with two big self service restaurants for lunch (different price ranges) and the quality in both are very good. There are also smaller places for burgers, pizzas and a good number of coffeeshops scattered inside the park. Water fountains are plenty so bring your bottles. Bathrooms are clean and well maintained. Don't hesitate to come!
Felipe C — Google review
It's a massive open air garden full of modern art installations and galleries. Easy to spend a whole day here if you purchase the transport pass - if you do it all on foot, you'll probably need two days.
Caleb J — Google review
Amazing place! Exhibitions are focused on preserving our planet and humanity. Beauty of natural park flows into galleries where artist works made me think about planet, about my actions and our future. Beautiful and insightful place. I would love to come for more time, enjoying lunch at one of the cafes or restaurants and listening to sounds of nature.

Tatiana M — Google review
It's a really incredible place to visit, a harmonic blend of nature and art. Highly recommended.
Claudio E — Google review
Absolutely beautiful. The art is wonderful and interactive for the most part, but it's the natural beauty of the park and the wondeful little relaxation nooks that make it a great day trip. A lot of food options at reasonable prices, but the store is overpriced. It's not wheelchair friendly as there is a lot of walking. Any physical disabilities and you'll definitely want to rent the private little golf cart. If you do the public golf cart, you'll still have to walk a lot between stop and to see things, which you can't do from the main road. It's an amazing, can't miss stop though!
Beatriz A — Google review
Nature and art. A huge parc with a lot of different trees and plants. With gallaries full art. If your going to walk, take a view days to visit. There is a internal transport(golfcart) you can use to go faster through the parc.40BRL/person. A shop, cafe and toillet. Realy a cool couple days to visit.

(Translated by Google) A large, very beautiful lake, with grass, a place to walk along the promenade. The drinking fountain I found was broken. A beautiful sunset. Unfortunately, there is a lot of trash, despite there being few trash cans, and some people throw trash on the ground. A beautiful viewpoint, but very dirty and stinking of urine. It is the home of the alligator Alfredo. (Original) Uma lagoa grande, muito bonita, gramas, parte para caminhar no passeio. O bebedouro que achei ,estragado. Um pôr do sol lindo. The Pampulha Art Museum, also known as the Cassino da Pampulha, is a prominent feature of the Pampulha Modern Ensemble in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Designed by renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer, this museum was originally a casino that brought life to the city's nightlife. It is part of a collection of buildings recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Very modern place, breath taking architecture and landscaping. You will find a variety of modern pieces and contemporary art inside the museum.

Beautiful construction and wonderful location overlooking the lake. The museum is also a good starting point to take a walk along the lake river. There are several animals that you can spot walking in the small garden of the museum. No WiFi available.

Magestic building thanks to genius Oscar Niemeyer, although the exhibit wasn't that interesting and it is quite small. Hard to get there if you are not driving there. They could do something more interesting with the cafeteria, since it was empty and I was really looking for a soda...
Daniela O — Google review
The modern museum is part of Pampulha's architectural complex and one more exemple of Oscar Niemeyer 'avant garde' work. Its gardens by the lagoon and the view deserve pictures. Look for informations about the project Domingo no Museu (Sunday at the Museum) and you'll have your best sunday morning in BH. The first sunday of each month the museum has a concert at the big saloon, always with eclectical artists that play the true brazilian music.

Mineirão Stadium, situated in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, is a must-see for sports enthusiasts and football aficionados. This colossal stadium was constructed in 1965 and has become one of the country's largest sporting venues. With a seating capacity exceeding 60,000 spectators, it serves as the home ground for renowned football clubs Atletico Mineiro and Cruzeiro Esporte Clube.
Well thought of access ramps make very easy to get in and out of the stadium. Seats are comfortable enough, although you hardly use it as local fans watch the game standing mostly. Big flags also block the view at times, but it is part of the local culture so that was OK. Good sandwiches and beer available inside. Great experience

I went to my first football game here and it was amazing. I didn’t even like football (scoccer) before and now I’m addicted. The energy from the Cruzeiro fans is amazing. Never seen it heard anything like it in my life. I just have one problem. The VIP section isn’t that great. I paid R 750 for premium seats ( Hall Principal 203 VIP) and it didn’t come with food or drinks. One the website it said it would. I was pretty upset at first but honestly the game was so good I forget about it after an hour.

Mercado Central de Belo Horizonte is a bustling indoor market that offers a vibrant mix of food, crafts, and souvenir vendors alongside casual bars and restaurants. This modern city boasts a rich architectural heritage, including the Pampulha Modern Ensemble and Obras de Oscar Niemeyer.
The very best experience to understand and discover the local taste and culture. Being a Latino, some halls looked so familiar, I felt in Mexico, some others looked so Colombian or Ecuadorian... and of course, some felt a totally new experience and authentically local, 1000% Brazilian. Diversity as its best! Get lunch from the buffets with a nice portion of feijão and picanha, pared with a Brahma beer chopp. Then, look for a coffee with pão de queijo. And, since it is warm and humid, stop for a caipirinha, 500 ml or 1000 ml

Mercado Central in Belo Horizonte is a vibrant and authentic experience you won’t want to miss! 🇧🇷✨ It’s the perfect place to explore the rich culture and flavors of Minas Gerais. From delicious cheeses, sweets, and artisanal cachaça to handmade crafts and souvenirs, every corner is full of charm. The friendly vendors and lively atmosphere make it a joy to wander through. Whether you’re shopping, tasting local treats, or just soaking in the vibe — this market is a true gem in BH!
Arto L — Google review
It's always a great experience to come here. They have numerous shops with food, drinks, and various products, from cheese, crafts, souvenirs, and much more. Try the local dishes, such as the "pão de queijo", "empada", etc.
Joao V — Google review
If you want to taste the soul of Minas Gerais, Mercado Central de Belo Horizonte is mandatory. Since 1929 this indoor market has occupied an entire city block and grown into a cultural hub with over 400 stalls offering food, crafts, produce, cachaça, and more. The tradition of Queijo de Minas, recently recognized by UNESCO as part of Brazil’s intangible cultural heritage, is everywhere. You will find every variation fresh, semi aged, and aged made and sold by local cheesemakers. Walking through the aisles, you see that this is not just commerce. It is a snapshot of Minas’s diversity, where vendors of Portuguese, African, and local heritage sell side by side. You hear local accents, smell roasting coffee, and taste sweets like doce de leite or goiabada. The number of micro bars and snack counters filled with locals eating feijão tropeiro, pão de queijo and having a beer shows how deeply this market is woven into daily life. What separates it from many Latin American markets is its cleanliness and organization. Floors are polished, stalls are tidy and vendors take pride in presentation. At the same time, it does not feel artificial. It still has that energy and authenticity that makes a market alive. Where it falls short is in the live animal section, which feels cramped, and the odd rule that bans bicycle parking even though the city promotes cycling. These are outdated issues that should be fixed. The structure itself has presence, with steel beams, high ceilings and historic character. In the 1960s the market faced closure but local merchants took control and rebuilt it as a covered space in just 15 days, keeping it alive for generations. Mercado Central is not just a food hall. It is a living panorama of Minas Gerais culture, flavor and identity. Whether you come for cheese, coffee, crafts or conversation, you leave feeling connected to Belo Horizonte’s beating heart.

Beautiful place for a stroll, any time of day. Bonus if you read up on the historical value of the buildings you see surrounding the park itself. Sidenote: there's a very kind man just off the south side of the park, on Avenida Cristovao Colombo, who sells chicletes and other boxed treats from his wheelchair, to passing motorists. He's been selling from this very same corner, from his wheelchair, for over 30 years.

Wonder place to visit in Belo Horizonte and in any city (main cities in Brazil have the Cultural Center of Banco do Brazil). Entry is free. Here there is an interior terrace shared by two cafes/ restaurants, with very nice ambiance; the prices are a bit too high, so it is not for the backpacker, but it is nice to have a different experience. The exhibits are usually well curated. Currently there are two, one of Antonio Poteiro, Brazilian popular artist and one of Man Ray, the famous photographer. Both very interesting and, again, with free entrance. Coming here gives you the opportunity to enjoy the Freedom square (Praça da Liberdade) where it is settled. Don’t miss the wavy building of Oscar Niemeyer, renown Brazilian modernist architect.

Mirante do Mangabeiras, located in Belo Horizonte, is a popular observation point that offers stunning panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. Initially established in 1976, it has evolved into a significant tourist attraction over the years. Accessible by both driving and hiking, this elevated site provides an ideal vantage point for capturing breathtaking sunset vistas and urban landscapes.
Free and open to the public. Very fun and cool ride up to the look-out in the first place. Pay attention to the awesome houses and first glimpses that you get of the skyline before getting up. At the look-out itself you have a wonderful view that all visitors to Belo Horizonte should take the time to see. The city is immense and it’s really cool to see it all laid out before you and the scope of the hills and all. Super cool. There isn’t anything else in the park right now so you can see it all as fast or as slow as you want.

We went here for a lovely end to the day during a birthday celebration for my husband - 30 years! It was so inspiring and beautiful. Everyone there was in awe of the cloud and the view created by the Almighty! The birds are singing, and there was a crowd of interesting black birds with red spots in their necks. It feels like nature can rest here! And we can, too. If you are looking for a peaceful addition to your date or family outing, look no further!

GREAT SUNSET VIEWS!!! If you want to get the views of entire Belo Metropolis area while enjoying the stunning sunset, this is the place for you. The park is open from Dusk to Dawn. The gated location is easily accessible by Uber followed by a short walk to the viewing area. There is no entry fee for the park! The area is clean, safe and family friendly. However the only thing missing is there are no food stalls. So plan to bring drinking water and snacks to enjoy with the view! There are public restrooms but those are not too clean either. Overall a little inconvenient but the views definitely make up for it!

Cachoeira do Tabuleiro

Waterfalls
Considered the highest waterfall in MG, with a drop of 273m, Cachoeira do Tabuleiro is located in the district of Tabuleiro. The access to this tourist attraction is well-structured and visitors are advised to tread carefully on the rocks during their climb. The view from the upper part offers stunning scenery, with several pools available for swimming and relaxation throughout the day.
Wow... Amazing place for adventurers. Tabuleiros is one of the highest brazilian waterfalls (> 300 m). Access is easier from Conceição do Mato Dentro and you can park your car inside the park without difficulties. There are 03 different places to visit: - Mirante - you will just see the waterfall and is less than 10 min walking from the main entrance - Bottom - Around 30 minutes walking from the main entrance. You can swing on small lakes - Above - Around 240 minutes walking Don't forget your watter and reserve one day to visit Tabuleiros waterfall. Be careful during rain seasons!
Eduardo F — Google review
This waterfall is a gravity-defying spectacle. It's so tall, the water evaporates into a fine mist before it reaches the bottom, like a liquid ghost. The viewpoint, a leisurely 15-minute stroll, offers a truly breathtaking panorama. For the more adventurous, a 30-minute descent leads to refreshing swimming ponds, or a 3-4 hour hike will take you to the top. The hike itself is a decent workout, a 500-meter climb followed by a 300-meter descent, but nothing a moderately fit person can't handle. Just keep an eye out for the local creepy-crawlies. At the top, you'll find a series of inviting ponds perfect for a dip, cascading water flows for a natural massage, and deep pools for cliff jumping. If you're feeling particularly energetic, you can venture all the way to the edge, where the water begins its dramatic 250-meter plunge. The view from there is undeniably romantic, a vast expanse of rocky wilderness stretching into the horizon. Be prepared to hop across the river a few times to reach this hidden gem. Park rangers patrol the area, ensuring everyone's safety and enforcing the park's 5 PM closing time. They're also a reliable source of assistance if you happen to get lost or need help. The entrance fee is a mere 10 Brazilian reals, and seniors 60+ get in free. A word of caution: the top viewpoint is accessible by car from Tres Barras, but it requires a sturdy SUV or Jeep and involves a short but challenging 2 km drive across rocks and rivers. Not recommended for those with mobility issues.
Lukáš H — Google review
A amazing waterfalls to visit for sure. Both top and bottom views are excellent. The view from top needs some walking inside the waterfalls and is worth the effort. We can sit next the waterfalls and see it’s magic. The bottom park gives the overall visualization of the waterfalls.

(Translated by Google) Tabuleiro Waterfall, where the Earth whispers grandeur and the water sings freedom Not every place makes you feel so small. Tabuleiro Waterfall does. There, in the heart of Conceição do Mato Dentro, the water plummets almost 300 meters as if the sky were crying with calm, strength, and faith. It's the largest in Minas Gerais, but its size is only a detail: what truly impresses is the silence it imposes on our hearts when we see it up close. The trail to the base is a moderate adventure, with rocks, roots, and shade. It takes about 3 km of steps and sighs—but once you get there, time slows down. The pool is clear, deep, and wild. The waterfall vibrates in the air like a constant thunderclap. And there you are, just another small being before the immensity. If you want a more relaxed breath, the viewpoint is also worth every second. In a 600-meter easy hike, the view will leave you speechless. Whether high or low, Tabuleiro touches the soul. (Original) Cachoeira do Tabuleiro onde a Terra sussurra grandeza e a água canta liberdade Nem todo lugar te faz sentir pequeno de um jeito tão bonito. A Cachoeira do Tabuleiro faz.

The hiking trail leading to the waterfall is relatively easy, making it accessible for visitors of all ages. While there is an entrance fee, the beauty of the waterfall and the opportunity to swim in its waters make it well worth the cost.
This place is simply amazing! The waterfall is beautiful and has enough place to swim. Personally I liked a lot the other side of the waterfall, the Cipó river. So calm and peaceful! You can enjoy the river literally by yourself. To reach the big waterfall, you need to walk around 1km and the trail is very easy. Small kids and eldery people can do it easily. The entrance fee is 30 real but it is well deserved!

A lovely place. Swimming at the big waterfall was a lot of fun. Rocks we're a bit slippery but it was great on a warm day. Expensive but well maintained. That being said, we were told the price was because there was a lifeguard there to watch over us. We never saw him. I don't think there actually was one.

Nice enough, but R$50 per person! and you have to fill in a form and have your bags checked to go in, more security than at the airport! Just to go into the state park, which has bigger and better waterfalls, for FREE and not bother with this place and it's greedy owners. How can they charge R$50 when the Sanctuario do Caraça, which is thousands of times larger and far more beautiful charge only R$25! Daylight robbery. I see some people here saying that if there was no entrance fee and it was not public it would be a mess. Well go look in the State Park, it is free and well kept and the staff are very friendly and helpful, not like the grumpy trio when we arrived, who did not even say good morning!

Waterfall Farofa

Outdoor Activities
National park
Waterfall Farofa offers a magnificent natural setting with an impressive landscape. The trek to reach the waterfall is relatively easy, though it can become moderately challenging if the path is wet and muddy. Covering a distance of approximately 8km, this journey is quite rewarding as you witness the beauty of the catchment basin along with its refreshing and picturesque surroundings. Moreover, access to the park is free; however, it's advisable to arrive early to avoid any restrictions.
Great landscape! The trek is flat and the difficulty is lower-medium, but can become mid if the trek is wet, where you face some quagmire. Overall it's a nice 8km trek 'til the waterfall. The catchment basin is not that large but it's refreshing and beautiful even so. Quite rewarding journey!

This entrance provides access to two main attractions, the Farofa waterfall and the Bandeirinhas canyon, a total of 29km of route - consider cycling, the trails do not offer secondary attractions and the sun is scorching. On the 2nd day we got lost (there is little signage) and were unable to see the Capão dos Palmitos waterfall, which they say is pleasant. I found the lagoons on the way to the Retiro entrance unattractive, in my opinion they are not worth the trip.

Natural reserve with a biome between desertic and forest. Beautiful waterfall. Be aware that the points of interests are several Km aparts and you might need more than one day to visit all. Be safe when going there by car, the roads are poor quality.

Igreja de Santo Antonio

Catholic church
Igreja de Santo Antonio, also known as Igreja Matriz de Santo Antonio, is a stunning church in Tiradentes. Named after the town's patron saint, it was designed by Aleijadinho and boasts a magnificent interior adorned with gold and Old Testament symbolism. The church features a remarkable polychrome organ from Portugal and seven golden phoenixes hanging from braided chains. Outside, there is a famous sundial dating back to 1785.
Gorgeous church, covered with gilded gold. Every detail is a joy to examine. Make sure to note the imported Portuguese organ.

Standing before a centuries-old church is always an impressive experience, evoking thoughts of the countless people who have been there before us. The building itself, with its towering structure and rich history, carries with it both light and shadow. While it has been a symbol of suppression at various points in history, it has also been a place of belonging and hope for those seeking solace and a better afterlife. This blend of dark history and spiritual refuge speaks to the deep and complex role the church has played in people's lives over the centuries.
Ulf D — Google review
Very beautiful, old colonial church. The R$10 seems steep for what it is though and the amount of tourists moving through. Occasionally closed for weddings etc. but this isn't well advertised.

Fountain of St. Joseph

Fountains
Fountain of St. Joseph, also known as Chafariz de Sao Jose, is a historic site built in 1749 that served as a crucial stop for travelers to replenish their canteens and water their animals. Despite its slightly worn appearance, the fountain exudes an air of tranquility with its surrounding greenery, making it an ideal spot for picnics or seeking respite from the heat.
Excellent site for a peaceful stroll. The fountain is relatively well preserved, resembling the facade of baroque churches. It was built in the 18th century, and was used to supply water to the residents of Tiradentes. Apparently, the three water spouts had different purposes (human consumption, another one for animals and the third one for washing clothes). At the back you can still see the aqueduct that supplies the water which comes from the Bosque da Mãe D'Agua (access seems closed now).
Jorge R — Google review
Very cool historic fountain. It was very unusual because it is in someone's front yard. The home located behind the fountain is privately owned. it was a little disappointing to see only two of the three heads of the fountain working at the time we visited. Hopefully the caretaker has plans to restore this historic Monument.

The Museum of St. Anne, located in Minas Gerais, was originally a jailhouse and has now been transformed into a small yet captivating museum. It showcases around 300 carvings of Saint Anne, the patron saint of miners, reflecting the region's history of gold mining. The museum is well-maintained and organized, with interactive screens providing detailed explanations about each artwork.
You can check some beautiful Aleijadinho pieces of art!!

(Translated by Google) The structure is in excellent condition, but has had to be restored and modified over time. When I went, admission was R$20, while students and teachers were free, with tickets purchased at the door. The museum is small and features several sacred statues of Saint Anne, mother of Mary. Catholics might find it more interesting.
