The most amazing hike in Rio and one of the best hikes we’ve ever done. It’s a difficult hike and you should definitely get a guide unless you’re an experienced climber and have your own equipment. All the effort is worth it. The views are unique and you can see monkeys and beautiful wild birds on the way. We booked through Airbnb Experiences. Try to choose a sunny day.
Lukas A — Google review
December 2024 (Booked hike though tripadvisor / Rodrigo Indio Tours) Stand out experience of 16 days in Rio - highly recommended if you want to get away into the peace of Tijuca forest, challenge yourself a bit and get the most rewarding view - with plenty of photo opportunity. The hike is uphill via steps, forest path and minor scrambles via natural and man made hand-holds. It's moderately challenging and there is a small climb just before the summit - with a view next to none in the area. I was glad for good shoes + backpack and lots of water+snacks. Rodrigo was an excellent guide adding context to the encounters with flora and fauna, we saw jackfruit trees, monkeys etc. What was more impressive was his ability to gently encourage members of our group and create a safe space for continuing onwards even if it felt challenging to them. He shared how to tackle some of the trickier bits and we all cheered on each other in the end as we made it though the various stages of the climb up and ended up an awesome experience richer - with photos kindly provided by Rodrigo to tell the story. I've done a bit of solo hiking in Tijuca but for this one I was really happy to have Rodrigo along as I felt more relaxed and able to enjoy the forest, hike and views. - it wouldn't have been the same without him. Book this if you're in Rio and remotely interested in walking, forest and great views.

One of the most amazing places I’ve ever visited!!!! There is climbing part was very interesting to me and when you reach the top, it’s a totally different story, totally worth it 😍🇧🇷❤️❤️ Most visit in Rio 🤩
Rokia H — Google review
Most beautiful hike you can do in Rio! We were really confused whether we needed a guide or not, let me tell you, you don’t (speaking as a European)! Here’s how we did it: - you can get an uber there and back - the hike is continuous ascending - there is 1 part where there are some guys that help you to get up/down a steep rock path. I asked, they are there every day (except when it rains)! The price for gringos was 80BRL up&down or 50BRL only down. For Brazilians I heard them say 30BRL up and 30BRL down. They’re super friendly and give you the harness and equipment! - next to this part, you can also boulder up. If you’re unhandy, might not be the best idea. But if you’re like us used to climb a bit of rocks every now and then, it’s easy! Only downside for us was that there were occupied by guides with groups and the queue was long. - the views are beautiful! - the park only opens at 8am - We saw tours where you could really climb and ascend via the rocks, this looked really cool! We might do that next!
Anna E — Google review
Very challenging hike but absolutely worth it. The total hike took us around 6h (including breaks). The first 2.5h is a beautiful path with only a few steep parts. Once you almost teach the top a big cliff wall is waiting. It is possible (but dangerous) to go up alone. We were lucky and some tour guides with ropes were waiting and took us up (and down) for around 10$ per person. Once you are up there is another 20 min hike with some sketchy parts waiting. The view from the top is absolutely worth it. When going down we had to wait to use the ropes because it was quite busy. Make sure to bring sunscreen, water and snacks 👍🏻
Leo N — Google review
Great views if it’s a sunny day otherwise you can’t see anything through the clouds. Easy hike. Just don’t rely on Uber to get home. There’s no cell service at trail head we almost got stuck there as it’s a long walk back to town to catch a cab.
Danny G — Google review
On of my best hikes so far, if you looks for a full day with amazing views and breathtaking moments then you must go for a hike to Pedra da Gavea. I recommend to go with a guide, as it’s NOT so easy to go Alone as it’s not for beginners. Our guide knew all the secrets and he have his robes to help you with some parts of the hike. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it and I’ll definitely come back for more breathtaking moments.
Nader E — Google review
Rio is chalk full of incredible views, but there is not a single one better than the top of Da Gavea. One of the best views to be had in the entire world tbh. The hike up isn’t easy and a guide is 100% recommended, if not required. Truly an epic and bucket list experience! @nothin_but_views

Looooooved it! I felt like the royal family still lived there! Pro: - flows really well - history and layout was perfect - clean and well maintained - free (when I went) - great gardens Con: - average gift shop - had to use slippers on your shoes and floor was super waxed (be careful you can clip) - can't take pictures inside
Brian A — Google review
Access is free on Wednesdays and is a self tour across the palace. It takes about 1hr if you pay attention to the details. Worth visiting in Petrópolis.
Bertha I — Google review
It is a cultural visit to understand how was the daily basics of the emperor and he's wife and way to do so.
Carlos L — Google review
If you were a bad student as me, this is the opportunity to know the history of Brazil. We have just 63 years of kingdom here in Brazil but until our "freedom" or beginning of the democrat republicans there are very interesting issues inside the museum.
D B — Google review
Beautiful palace. Mostly everything written in portuguese You can pay CASH ONLY! The slippers that they give you to put on your shoes are very dangerous and disgusting dirty. Could search for another option for visitors! No photos allowed.
Cristiana F — Google review
Great palace. Free entrance when we went. We had to wear covers for our shoes. Great collection.
Patrick F — Google review
You're required to wear slippers over your shoes to protect the floors, but unfortunately they are one size fits some and you'll likely be pseudo-skating around the museum. Also, you're required to check all belongings before entering, including cameras. Photography is not allowed inside, with or without flash. Other than these minor things, worth the trip! Definitely recommend, just be aware what you're in for.
Garrett P — Google review
Quite interesting to see how decadent the royal family was while their countries (Brazil and Portugal) suffered. The museum is free sometimes and cheap the rest of the time. It would get 5 stars if they allowed photos inside and dispensed with the awkward slippers they furnish you to preserve the hardwood floors.

What a fabulous structure, amazing how the first two meters of the structure is cut stone while the remainder is built with concrete to represent the people. It is in an idealistic location overlooking the river, and is very well maintained. One thing to be aware of is shorts are not the preferred clothing item. An ideal location for reflection and some quiet time.

Cathedral in Petropolis. After their exile to and death in Europe, the remains of the last Brazilian emperor Pedro II and his wife were laid to rest here in marble tombs. His surviving daughter and her French husband are also entombed here. Of interest to those interested in 19th century imperial history of Brazil.

Nice place, can see why he built a glider to get to the bottom of the mountain. He was a bit later to fly, just after the Wright Brothers.

Very informative and interesting small museum, one of the best places in Petropolis.

The House of Santos Dumont is a great place to visit. I got surprised when I saw how simple he lived behind the big intelligence he had. The history of this great person brings pride of such human and the benefits he brought to the humandade.
Fabio M — Google review
Beautiful site with a rich history and gorgeous scale replicas of Santos' creations, and the original house designed by Santos Dumont himself. The entrance fee is decent, and they offer a video (with English subtitles) that tells the true story of Mr. Dumont. This is a must-visit site for fans of aviation history. Keep in mind the stairs are steep (which is part of the original history of the house), but there is an elevator available for people who have difficulty.

Complexo Bohemia is a must-visit destination in Brazil, offering an incredible experience for beer enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The complex houses the renowned Bohemia Brewery, a national heritage site built in neoclassical style in 1853. Visitors can explore the fascinating museum of beer, which showcases the rich history of brewing in Brazil. The tour includes tastings of three different Bohemia beers and provides insight into the brewery's heritage.
Full view of the beer process through the windows, store is great. Such a nice place, try to reach on weekends. No need ticket.

I had an amazing experience at Restaurante Cervejaria Bohemia in Petrópolis. The setting is beautiful — inside the historic Bohemia brewery — and the ambiance is lively yet cozy. The food was outstanding! I had the Angus flat iron steak, perfectly cooked and beautifully plated. Everything is clearly designed to pair with their incredible craft beers, which are brewed right there on-site. The staff was attentive and friendly, and the view from the upstairs restaurant added a special touch. After lunch, I visited the brewery museum — which I highly recommend if you’re into beer culture or Brazilian history.
Roberto B — Google review
Nice place, especially beer tasting, gift shop is also interesting😀
Nevena B — Google review
Brazil's oldest brewery was founded by German immigrants in the mountainous summer getaway of Petrópolis in 1853. It was once the preferred beer of the Portuguese royal family. While mass production shifted to São Paulo in 1998, Bohemia reopened its original location in 2012 as a specialty brewery museum, bar, and restaurant. The interactive guided tour explores the history of beer and specifically Bohemia, offering tastings and a visit to the barrel-aging beer cave.

Absolutely 5 stars. The venue is very well mainland the 44 real tour was amazing. They did a great job explaining beer making process and so many fun facts.
Flying T — Google review
This was one of the best parts of my visit in Petropolis. The first half of the tour is a museum of the history and science of beer. The displays are in Portuguese, but almost all of them have English translations. The displays were beautiful and informative. The last half is a guided tour. Our guide spoke in Portuguese, which was difficult for me. However, most of the displays were straightforward enough and interesting enough that I wasn't bored and didn't feel left out. After the guided tour, we were given a flight of 3 different beers to taste (and children were given juice so they didn't feel left out). The gift shop had many great gifts for me to bring back home. The restaurant had great vegetarian options (and of course, beer), and the service was excellent. I highly recommend you do this tour!

We would recommend to anyone to stay at this beautiful place ❤️ the breakfast was amazing ! I can't forgot the sweetest of birds here ... thank you again for a beautiful experience ❤️

Overall this place is a decent place to stay if you are not looking to spend a ton. There was 2 of us and our big dog. The Buffet was pretty good, lots of options. The Juice was terrible though, it seems it was watered down to a 90/10 water to juice ratio. Breakfast is till 10am weekdays and 10:30 on the weekends. The Room was mostly okay. Up to date AC unit and a ceiling fan, the shower was nice too, hot water on demand no electric shower. Some of the walls were peeling and the bathroom occasionally smelt of sewer water coming up through the drain. Everything was clean though in the room, no bugs or grime anywhere. There was a dog that barked in the room next to ours for almost 2 hours in the middle of the night. And same thing happened mid day. The staff didn’t do anything to solve it and it was extremely obvious it was happening because it’s a small hotel. The bed and pillows I would say were bellow average to average for comfort. There’s plenty of options for drinks and beer at the front of the hotel to purchase at any time. They also had things in the fridge that’s in the room along with some snacks that you have to pay for as well if you want them. If you have a dog it’s an additional $50 BRL that they don’t disclose when you book the room online.

The place was cool, the staff were all very nice and it was a safe place to stay. The breakfast every morning was super delicious and had just about everything you can get for a breakfast. Would definitely return.

Nice and simple stay. It was our second time there and everything ran as smooth as the first visit. The location or perfect for those who want to stay at walking distance from the sightseeing places of Petrópolis. The closest place is Crystal Palace, less than a minute walking. Or you can walk about 7 minutes to the Imperial Museum. The continental breakfast is simple but have everything you may need for a morning of walking. The rooms are simple but cozy. If you're traveling in the summer I would recommend one with AC. The restroom has a nice and strong shower. Nood to relax.

It features a wide range of national and international brand stores offering discounts on clothing, footwear, accessories, and more. The complex also provides various dining options and entertainment, making it a complete destination for a day of shopping and fun. While some visitors find the prices not significantly lower than regular retail, others appreciate the progressive discount system in many stores. The outlet is considered safe with ample security personnel.
It is an outlet style mall, far from downtown and relative good prices. If you are planning to come, you should have a small list of things to buy (at least) because you need to compensate the money for the gas.

Several stores , not really outlet price in my opinion - I saw most of stores with progressive discount system which forces you to buy too many items in the same store so you can see a price benefit. Looks safe with many guards.

Nice clothes, good quality but too expensive for an outlet. We left together with 6 other customers because the airconditioner made it unsupportable to shop quietly. Far too cold.

Feels eerie and abandoned I wish I got to see it around 2016 when the Olympics were here. I went here to visit another Olympic park and the few workers there were confused why I was even there. Like um it’s an Olympic village. It’s still very pretty just shocking to see it so empty and not used.

Curupira Recreio dos Bandeirantes is a stunning beach located about 40 minutes away from Ipanema and Copacabana. It's a favorite spot for surfers and bodyboarders, with strong winds and waves making it ideal for water sports. The beach offers a serene escape from the tourist crowds, set against the backdrop of an Atlantic forest reserve.
We were there in November. A very interesting place. Luxury hotels and apartments are located next to the exotic, noisy, narrow streets of the favela.

Hello tourists. This is RECREIO beach.A strip of sand for about 10 km or so.It´s after Barra and before Macumba and the stone. It was wild back them, nobody at all. There you see a labor city and none peasant, athlete or entertainer. It´s only sand,no stones or bricks in the way.I remeber a nature with stone in the middle of the beach ahead ,in Prainha and macumba is cut by a stone also. The quiosques still about old generation,I think few of woods, closed long time with only a few fidel customers or so.It´s about yourselve. The beach has nothing actually. If you have cash or seek hanging or so.I loved do this course by myself, admire femsle athletes and very loyals. But even for a bolshoii dancer she would complain a lot about so much studies in her country to see litter, low wages and people struggling close to her.And many other complains.... Was good, her coach would avise her.I am sure she understand only of practice. Maybe kyte needs crowds or close to civilization, nobody is up to show and desert brazil. This is our biggest beach and desert so far. No safe guards, dangerous waters. No kind at all. Good walk!

Prainha Beach

Prainha Beach is a charming and small cove beach located in Rio de Janeiro, offering a rustic surf haven with excellent surfing conditions. However, swimming can be dangerous due to strong currents. The area is free from high-rise buildings, providing a refreshing escape with occasional wooden fish restaurants and ice-cold coconut water stands.
Visiting Prainha was an unforgettable experience. Tucked away in a stunning natural setting, the beach feels like a hidden paradise surrounded by lush green hills and dramatic cliffs. The golden sand and crystal-clear water made it perfect for both relaxing and taking a refreshing swim. The waves were gentle in the morning and more lively in the afternoon, making it a great spot for surfers and swimmers alike. Despite its beauty, Prainha maintained a peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere that made the day feel truly special. Whether you’re looking to sunbathe, explore the scenic trails nearby, or just soak in the breathtaking views, Prainha is a must-visit destination that captures the very best of nature’s charm.

The beach itself is amazing, beautiful it blends the city with nature, just by turning around a corner.. Great options to eat seafood based meals and an amazing spot for surfing. Which makes it not so welcoming to swimmers, cause there usually are a lots of waves. Phone reception over there is really bad, so getting an uber to leave the place might be an ordeal, i'd recommend a car, a bycicle or accept the fact that you might have to walk back part of the way before u can get Internet again (but there is a chance that u'll get internet over there).
Felipe C — Google review
Amazing scenery beach in Rio. Great for those who surf. Families are welcome too. I recommend you to visit it before 11h am specially during the weekends when it gets crowded.

Great beach in a little cove. Water is great, ground is firm unlike other beaches, and waves are pretty good sized to body surf and swing in.

I call this place the Hawaii of Rio!! It is beautiful, clean, safe and full of waves. The restaurant located at the point is pretty tasty and a little pricy. Prainha is a must when visiting Rio!!!

Lovely beach. Go during the day, while the sun is up! Just make sure it doesn't get dark while you are at Prainha beach, we couldn't find a taxi and struggled a bit as wifi connection didn't work well either.

Abricó Beach

Abricó Beach is a spacious and relaxed nude beach in Rio de Janeiro, offering stunning views of offshore islands. It's a hidden gem among the city's beaches, providing an option for those looking to tan without tan lines. The naturist area is accessible by walking past large rocks on the left side of the beach. While it offers a great place to swim and enjoy nature, some visitors have reported encountering inappropriate behavior from certain individuals.
Love this nude beach. It's near Classico but on the opposite side of the entrance behind the rocks. There is no signal in the area so you will need to plan ahead, carry cash for a taxi, or walk the hill for a signal.

Relaxing coast about 1 hour to 90 minute away from copa. Less people and nude optional. Be ware the phone reception isn’t the best so calling a Uber to return to ipenma isn’t straight forward
Sheng C — Google review
Great bar and great atmosphere. It's well worth the trip out here and it's also a great spot for a swim. We were here mid week in the early afternoon, so it wasn't busy at all, but imagine it'd get crowded on weekends.
Guy — Google review
Two places in one. If looking at the sea, on your right you have the regular beach, but on your left (passing those large rocks) you got a nudist beach. The whole place is wonderful. Today the water was clean and transparent, so you could see your feet. The only problem is to get back home, since there's not phone signal there. You should schedule with a driver to pick you up.
Rodrigo G — Google review
Fantastic as it’s calmer for kids. Warm water. Fun for adults as well.
Esmeralda B — Google review
Hidden gem. If you walk past the left side corner and go by and around big rocks on the beach sand you get access to the naturist area where clothing is optional. Great place to go for a swim and hang out for a bit in nature. It could really be an idilic place if it were not for the super weird men who are there not to be in harmony with nature but rather to let their sexual nature come out aggressively and extremely impolitely.
Gustavo R — Google review
Excellent beach. Sea is rough in the middle. Recommend staying on the right hand side of the beach, close to the rocks. The water is a bit calmer there and a car park is available.

The Shopping Nova Iguaçu is an enclosed shopping complex housing various large retail stores, trendy fashion shops, pet merchandise vendors, and quick-service restaurants. It serves as an excellent destination for leisurely outings and capturing stunning photographs. Visitors can easily lose track of time while exploring its diverse offerings throughout the day. Additionally, during the festive season, the mall hosts captivating Christmas events that cater to children's interests.
Miss that place fr, I’m on USA rn I recommend it a lot
Renata A — Google review
The mall is really nice for the most part, easy to get to where you need to, tons of clothing/electronic stores. The elevators/escalators usually always work but sometimes don’t. The bathrooms at this mall are almost always extremely dirty, clogged toilets, non operable sinks, toilet paper is always out in 80% of the stalls and smells pretty bad 1/2 the time. There are some great places to eat here at the mall and more than enough parking. When you enter from the front of the mall there are always people that harass you to buy things (Usually mentos) and don’t take “NO”for an answer!! You just have to keep walking. I find that super obnoxious!!!!

(Translated by Google) Casa da Hera belonged to Joaquim José Teixeira Leite, a coffee commissioner in the region. The house was built in the first half of the 19th century and Joaquim bought it to live in with his future wife, Ana Esméria Pontes França. The two lived with their two daughters on the property. Eufrasia Teixeira Leite is the only sister portrayed in the house and, after her death in 1930, she left the house and the lands of the farm were inherited by the Institute of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Today, it is managed by IBRAM. The house is very well preserved and the tour is guided, and it is advisable to book in advance; however, you can leave your name at the reception and wait for the next group of visitors. The preserved furniture and rooms serve as illustration for the guide's account, which tells the whole story in detail. It is a journey through Brazil's past and tells a little about the importance of coffee and the luxurious life of the barons in the times of the big house and the sensation. The gardens on the property are worth a visit and the bamboo tunnel is a must-see! There are also dolls in the outdoor area that pay homage to Mariana Crioula and Manuel Congo, who led the slave rebellion in Vassouras, the largest in the Paraíba Valley. The guided tour of the house and the tour of the property are free and well worth it. No food or drink is sold on site. There are bathrooms.

This tunnel, like many other structures in the area, was built by slaves using rough stone and measures 95m long, 5m wide, and 3.5m high. Ilha de Cataguás is a pristine, unpopulated isle renowned for its stunning snorkeling and bathing experiences on a picturesque white sand beach. This island is widely regarded as an ideal destination for day trips, attracting many visitors who yearn to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life in search of a peaceful sanctuary. It's possible to bring your own supplies and enjoy some quiet time amid paradise-like surroundings.
It's one of the best ones. You can go by morning or during afternoon and it'll look different but amazing at the same time, like caribbean. I prefer in the morning as there's less people.

Absolutely beautiful. We visited on a cloudy day so there weren’t any boats around.

This place is really not safe to snorkle. Lots of boats coming from everywhere and even jet skis with high speed. Avoid!
Deborah S — Google review
Our boat stopped here for us to have a swim or snorkel. What a beautiful spot, there was lots of marine life here, fishes were big and colourful. One of the tourist spotted a turtle bit unfortunately I didn't get to see one!

Another beautiful Island no far away by boat. Great place to do snorkeling or scuba driving.

Totally an awesome experience of nature at its finest. Swimming, snorkeling, relaxing. I would recommend not going on holiday weekends or during peak seasons though, unless you find a hidden unpopular beach or cove. It gets pretty crowded with boat traffic and people. If you are into the crowds etc go for it! 😁
Winston L — Google review
Another stop on our boat tour. Everyone had pool noodles to enjoy the warm clear water and all the fishies swimming close by. You don't actually go on the island.
Stephanie L — Google review
Get there early and you'll have a wonderful experience snorkeling with all the sea life. Gets too crowded to enjoy afterwards.

(Translated by Google) A place of preserved nature, with beautiful waterfalls and easy access, with Poço das Garrafas being the closest to the entrance. Perfect for swimming on hot summer days. I got to the parking lot in a normal car (not a 4x4). The road from S. José do Barreiro could be in better condition, but I've seen worse! Rs

(Translated by Google) The place is well signposted until you reach the entrance, but on the day we went there was no one at the entrance. After a while of reading the signs to find out how to get to the Santo Izidro waterfall, a guy appeared with a clipboard, asked where we were going and gave us some instructions. If you enter and there is no one to give you information about the waterfall, just follow the trail and enter. Right in front of you there will be a sign with an arrow "Mambucaba trail of gold". Take this access and go along the river.

(Translated by Google) Created in the 1970s, the preservation area covers one hundred thousand hectares between the Mantiqueira and Mar mountain ranges, with 60% of the territory in Rio de Janeiro (Parati and Angra dos Reis) and 40% in São Paulo (Areias, Cunha, São José do Barreiro and Ubatuba). Throughout the area, the beauty of the flora and fauna typical of the Atlantic Forest is striking. There are orchids, bromeliads, jequitibás and fig trees sharing the landscape with toucans, tapirs, agoutis, sloths and deer, among other native species. The mountain range also holds other pleasant surprises, such as waterfalls with drops reaching one hundred meters in height; peaks over two thousand meters in altitude that reveal hills and the sea; and the Trilha do Ouro, a 40-kilometer trail that ends at the beach. The park can be explored on foot, by bicycle, motorcycle or car - however, to enter with motorized vehicles you need authorization from Ibama. Activities vary according to the visitor's physical fitness - options range from light 40-minute walks to three-day treks, requiring overnight stays in settlers' houses or wild campsites. Angelo S — Google review
Good place to take a break from driving. The waterfall is not impressive, but the pools are quite comfortable. It is very close to the main road, offering easy access for visitors. Despite this, it can get a lot more crowded than other waterfalls in the region, attracting local informal food vendors - reason why you won't find silence here. Also, visitors tend to stay longer periods of time, along with their friends and/or family members - loaded with parasols, beach chairs, loudspeakers (music playlists), and some even carry their barbecue kits (not allowed though). This is, thus, not a very relaxing place either. It is also a problem in terms of rubbish: some visitors do not adhere to the city rules for use and protection of Tres Cachoeiras Waterfall. We should all keep in mind the need to preserve it. Nature is indeed abundant here, and beautiful: it should stay this way. To get here, it's possible to arrive by car, or on a tour. If arriving by car, the parking lot is next to the entrance of the site, and it's fairly spacious.
